In the Footsteps of a Saint
Tumblr media
FAITH TODAY:MAY 2011
Catholic actor Charlie Cox is making waves across the Atlantic – and he’s about to hit the cinemas in his native UK playing a saint in a new movie.
FAITH TODAY went to meet him.
How does it feel to be a saint?  That’s something no-one alive can ever really know, since sainthood is only acknowledged after death: but up-and-coming actor Charlie Cox knows more about it than most. Cox, 28, is the star of There Be Dragons, a new movie about the early life of St Josemaria Escriva, the Spaniard who founded Opus Dei.  So – given that he’s a Catholic himself - how did it feel to Cox to walk in a saint’s shoes, and to portray his holiness on screen?
What struck him most, says Cox, is that ‘there seemed to have been no single moment when Josemaria was saintly... instead, what people who knew him spoke about and wrote about was a lifetime of consistently good decisions and a dedication of his entire life to God’.  So in fact, he explains, portraying him meant being very human – and yet aware that decisions often had to be made that weren’t directed at other people, but were directed at God. Playing Josemaria is the latest step on a path that’s fast feeling like the road to the big-time: Cox first appeared on the showbiz radar in 2007 when he got the role of Tristan Thorne in the movie Stardust, and he went on to play the Duke of Crowborough in the ITV drama Downton Abbey.  And just a fortnight before we meet, he’s filmed his first episode of HBO’s prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire, the flagship programme of the new Sky Atlantic channel, in which he plays an immigrant from Northern Ireland with ties to the IRA.  Cox says he’s loving the part: Steve Buscemi, who recently won a Gold Globe award for his portrayal of Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson in the series, is one of his all-time heroes, and he can hardly believe his luck in being cast with him.
’Working with Steve feels amazing, I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been,’ he says, as we chat over coffee at a Madrid hotel on the morning of the premiere of There Be Dragons.  He jetted in this morning from New York – he’ll be there filming Boardwalk Empire through the summer and, he says, he can’t imagine a better way of spending the next few months. ‘They’re the nicest bunch of people – and everyone is so confident about how good the series is, so there’s a great buzz about it.’
Working on Boardwalk Empire has taken him a long way from his Sussex roots.  He grew up in Hearst Green, the son of publisher parents – and he was raised a Catholic, like his father, although he was educated at a non-Catholic independent school, Sherborne School in Dorset.  ‘Only about 70 out of 700 boys were Catholics. We had to get up early on a Sunday to go to Mass at a local girls’ school... it would have been easy to skive off it, but actually we never did.  I’ve always loved churches – even now, in a strange city, I’ll often wander around looking at churches.’ There was no history of acting in the family – bar a grandmother who had been at RADA before the second world war – but even as a youngster, Cox was smitten with the idea.  ‘My mum and dad had a fantastic attitude to it,’ he says.  ‘The school wanted me to go to university, play it in safe mode, have a back-up plan.  But my parents came to see me act, and afterwards my dad sat me down and he said: ‘I think you’d be a fool not to pursue this’.  And I don’t know whether I’d be here now if it hadn’t been for that one comment...’ Despite living in the US at the moment, and the fact that his parents spend most of their time these days in France, Cox says Britain will always be home – and he’s very close to his family.  He has a brother, and three half siblings from his father’s first marriage, and his parents have flown to see him in Madrid while he’s over for the premiere of There Be Dragons. After school, he spent a gap year working for a photographer – and even before he could take up a place at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he’d landed the role of Theo in the movie Dot the i.  ‘An agent took a punt on me and put me up for the part,’ he says.  ‘I’ve been incredibly lucky, and that was just one of my lucky breaks.’
But it’s not just luck – Cox is immensely likeable, and he’s obviously genuinely passionate about acting.  He’s also been smart enough to realise that he can learn a huge amount from more seasoned actors – so he saw acting alongside Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer in Stardust, for example, as a fantastic opportunity to soak up knowledge.  And he’s learnt lots more, too, from Roland Joffe, director of There Be Dragons, who was also the film-maker behind The Mission (about the early Jesuits in south America) and The Killing Fields (about the murderous Pol Pot regime in Cambodia), both of which were Oscar nominees.
‘I didn’t think twice about taking the part of Josemaria, and that was down to Roland,’ he says.  ‘He’s such a great director – he really understands the processes that actors have to go through to give their best.  I learnt so much from working with him.’
Given the subject-matter of There Be Dragons, Cox also spent time in the run-up to filming learning about Opus Dei, which has the status of a ‘personal prelature’ within the Catholic Church.  ‘I visited several Opus Dei houses, and I went on a retreat and had a lot of help from an Opus Dei priest, Fr John Wauck.’
Before he made the film, he admits, he’d never heard of Josemaria – and all he knew about Opus Dei was what he’d read in Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code.  But researching Josemaria, he says, what struck him most was the saint’s humanity – and his ability, examined in the film, to forgive.  ‘It was an example I had to put into practice, because one day when we were filming I returned to my trailer to find someone had broken in and cleaned the place out completely,’ he says.  ‘They’d even taken my computer, and the charger, and even my clothes.’ ‘The following day I was due to film one of the big scenes in which Josemaria shows how he can forgive, and I remember thinking: this is really interesting.  And the thing is that I did manage to forgive the guy who nicked my stuff.’ ‘And what I realised, through that incident, was that – though we think of forgiveness as something very moral and impressive, it’s actually something that works totally in your own favour.  Because if you don’t forgive then you’re angry inside – and that anger doesn’t hurt the other person, but it really hurts you.’ Since filming finished for There Be Dragons, Cox has been working on another movie – Moby Dick, due to be released later this year – and now Boardwalk Empire.  It all suggests, I tell him, that fame – which he’s told previous interviewers frightens him – could be beckoning. ‘It’s tricky,’ he says, candidly.  ‘I’ve got friends who have gone on to extraordinary fame, and what I’ve realised through them is that it’s never quite as appealing as it promised to be. ‘On the other hand, like everyone else I want recognition.  I like people to think I’m good at what I do. That’s human nature, isn’t it?’

Issue One: No Requiem In This Cold City
Tumblr media
Wayne Manor
The orphan's home was located outside Gotham City in the community of Crest Hill in Bristol Township. The massive building had all the amenities one would expect of a billionaire's residence. Walking in you'd be greeted by the Wayne's trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth standing in the main stairway. If you'd be in luck, you'd get to see the more than just the spacious ballroom; the giant kitchen, personal bedrooms, luxurious bathrooms, a private gym, study and cinema...
And underneath the orphans's feet, sitting on the sofa in the well-equipped library, would've been a giant tunnel system. Until a few years ago, it still was one. Now it was a giant cave for his alter ego; The Batman.
Cruel yaps, violent snaps of bullets and busy bustling of the Gotham streets were far away from Wayne Manor. The only thing that disturbed the odd peace, of turning pages, scribbles on paper and the crackling of the fireplace was Dick's rhythmic tapping of a pen on a hardwood table.
Bruce's eyes glossed over him to the other young man sitting in front of the fireplace. In the dark light, Dick and Jason looked almost identical: jet black hair, muscular backs and the same look on their faces when they're hard at work: squeezed blue eyes, jaw set tight with rhythmic breaths coming out their noses. But looking closer, the two seemed to share more dissimilarities each passing second. Dick was older, but Jason was taller. Dicks hair laid in wild curls on his head. Jason's hair was cut merciless short, that everyone could see the scar connecting to his lips to his ear. Jason's blue eyes were light as the sky. Dick's deep like the ocean. He could've gone on forever.
The nights have been serene for Gotham. It made Bruce Wayne a billionaire, philanthropist and part-time vigilante, more nervous than calm. It didn't help that half of his family was out of town. Duke Thomas, aka Signal and Cassandra Cain, Batgirl were on the other side of the earth, working on a particular hard case. Selina Kyle, his Catwoman, was nearby, working on her own agenda. But he didn't feel like contacting her. Stephanie, Spoiler, insisted on watching Gotham alone today. "Don't stress, I won't make a mess!" she said with a wink. Bruce only accepted it with a grumble.
Bruce would never admit it out loud, but he was glad to have a free night. Free from galas, criminals or pumped up on fear gas, just for one night. And ever since Damian... Life hasn't been easy in Wayne Manor.
The thought that his son, his son, was no longer here made the air shallow. His scratchy cashmere turtleneck closed around his throat. The room seemed to shrink, and he was big and so heavy. Moving seemed impossible.
"Breathe, Bruce," he thought. "It's nothing but breathing. Come on."
Years of meditation and breathing techniques had nothing on grief.
Losing another son was left over paint drops on the hundred-year-old floors of the manor. Fights between brothers over who'd get to choose the music on a car ride. A vacant room filled with reminders of him. It was the unfinished homework still laying on his desk. Having to explain why he couldn't go home again. A katana losing its edge. It was the first snowman they build together, a cat curling up in his lap, the vacant seat at dinner.
Death was knowing they'll be no more comfort in things that once were so precious. Beautiful memories corrupted by pain. Death was all those years ago, a pearl necklace splattering broken over the alley. Death was the smell of fresh earth in the rain, a casket lowered seven feet below. Damian was dea- TSCHK!
The thunderous sound of porcelain breaking into thousands of pieces startled him out of his thoughts.
The new youngest bat, Theodosia, - the current—er, former Robin, slumped over her book with eyes half closed. Her mug that once held fresh coffee filled to the brim, laid at her feet in tiny bits, but didn't seem to bother her at all.
Dick was at her side in seconds. "You okay, T?" Dick asked worried, already bending to collect the biggest pieces.
Her tired eyes looked at the mess on the floor. Bruce could see them widen as she realized that she was responsible for the chaos. Her dark hair fell into her face, as she aided Dick. "Yeah," she muttered, "Sorry."
Dick laid the broken pieces on the table. He breathed through his teeth. One shard had caught in his index finger. With a quick movement, Thea helped him pull out the piece. Immediately, the cut began to bleed. Thick red drops ran down his finger onto his palm.
"Leave it, you two," Jason called, his voice echoing. Carefully placing a bookmark in his book, before jogging out of the library. "I'll get the broom. And Alfred." "Ouch," Dick laughed. He put his finger into his mouth and sucked the blood out of the cut. He looked like a vampire, desperate for a drop of his life essence. Bruce almost smiled at the absurdity of his thought.
Blood was an everyday occurrence. Bloody noses during training, fingers swollen red from swinging through half of Gotham, bleeding hearts after love.
"Sorry, sorry," Thea said, all weariness washed away.
"It's okay, it can happen." Dick shrugged, now inspecting the tiny wound.
Jason came back with a broom in his hand with Alfred, trim and sporting his signature thin moustache, in tow. Alfred, already confronted with all kinds of situation, took a deep breath, straitening his back as he spoke in his dry British accent. "Oh dear, that was the third cup this month..."
Thea blushed before she stammered an apology.
"Oh, do not worry, Miss Drake," He winked. "Now come with Master Grayson. Let's take care of your fatal wound." Dick followed the trusted butler with quick steps, but not without sending Bruce a cheeky smile first. The heavy door squeaked as they walked out.
"Let me," Thea said to Jason, her hand already pulling on the broom. "This is my mess." Jason lifted the broom out of her reach. "No." "Come on now."
"Nope."
"Don't be annoying."
It was a funny picture; Jason Todd hovered over Thea Drake, at least two heads taller, twice her size in muscle, ominous and powerful. She tilted her head and looked up at him. As if it were yesterday, Bruce could remember when Jason came back. Driven by hate and revenge, he was out for blood. One of his victims along the way was Thea; she ended up a wretched bloody plump after crossing his way. Bruce pictured her laying on the floor. A floor full of shards, blood, used batarangs. Hair a mess, clutching her wounds, coughing up blood but standing her ground. The signature Robin "R", that she worked tooth and nail for, stripped from her chest.
"Do you think you're that good now?"
No hesitation. "Yes."
Jason might never get over the Robin title being stripped from him and given to a random girl, not even three months after his death. But Thea deserved Robin. And she got it taken away too. Now they're both older, stronger and smarter. Maybe even a little taller. He didn't like to admit that. And there was something like shared respect between the two.
Jason put his hand on her tense shoulder and his face softened into a warm smile.
"Thea, let me do it. I don't want you to hurt yourself."
Thea seemed startled and touched at the same time. She would've been ready to argue some more, and Bruce caught himself thinking; "Maybe therapy does help..."
Finally, she gave in, stepping aside. "Okay, but I'm going to get another cup. And make sure Dick didn't bleed out."
"How many did you have already?" Suspicion was laced in Jason's voice as he swept. The porcelain clicked as it touched.
Thea hurried past Bruce, avoiding Jason's judgement. Bruce noticed that she was wearing a black t-shirt with a familiar red "S" emblem printed on it. Like her brothers, she had blue eyes. But they always seemed to know what he was thinking, always ready to crack the lock behind any closed door. And being there by his side whenever he called.
"Hey, Bruce," Jason called.
No answer.
Batman made the way free. Robin followed without question. Like always...
"Bruce?" he repeated.
Bruce's voice was hollow. "I'm going out."
"In this weather?"
But Bruce was already gone.

Gotham City
The city's relentless. Bustling streets, silent walkers, giant illuminated screens lighting up the night. Towers build up to the sky and higher. But tonight, only ghosts and insane people were out haunting. Amid broken cobblestone, cracks in the walls and the polluted sky were Batman and Robin swinging from building to building. The snow rained relentlessly against Robin's skin, but the constant movement kept her warm enough to continue. Under the red, green and yellow armor Alfred had put hot pockets.  It was still too freezing for her to enjoy their patrol. On normal days she'd backflip in the air, jumping with glee from house to house. Tonight, the grappling hook launcher felt heavy in her hands. She forced herself to shoot straight and let herself float against gravity. Her dark hair tousled wild by the wind, a reminder to make an appointment at the hairdresser soon. Vigilante activities and beautiful hair, unfortunately, did not go together, no matter what Nightwing gave her for products.
In front of her was the dark shadow, making the way. Robin followed. It was hard to see, not only thanks to the smog but the snowflakes, turning the world around her into a wonder like ice fantasy.
Just as they passed Wayne Tower, a massive constructure shooting into the sky, she heard the familiar crackle of a line being switched on.
"Tschk- Oracle here- tschk." Robin let herself land on the nearest gargoyle. The stone under her gloved hands felt cold and slippery. She held tight grip onto his hoarse neck before answering: "Robin here."
Her own voice felt distant to her, like she was speaking underwater. Damn these Gotham winters.
Oracle- once Batgirl, always Barbara Gordon-, cleared her throat: "I thought you and Batman had a night off."
Oracle had a budding voice and could deliver even the scariest things with calm and patience. This ability helped overcome many buildings panic attacks or confused heroes in unknown sections of the city. Robin wouldn't know what to do without her own personal GPS and planner. "Change of plans," Robin said. "Crime never sleeps. And so do we." She could hear the older woman chuckle on the other end of the line. "You seem to be the only two people out in Gotham tonight. It's freezing." The wind howled and tugged at Robin's cape to carry on. "What's up?" Robin asked, one hand on her ear monitor. Oracle clicked her tongue jokingly "Seeming and being are two different things. But there's some action going on near the Gotham main station. Care to check it out?" "Let me guess: Freeze's guys?" "Yazeeh." "Who would've thought, in this weather? He's such a summer guy." Robin joked flatly. "It's his natural habitat." Robin sighted and looked down. Gotham was covered in snow. Fog danced around and she couldn't see Batman anymore.
"Tell Batman, I'm taking a detour. Can you follow me through? I can't see shit." Barbara cleared her throat: "Language, kiddo." "I'm a full-grown adult." Robin protested. "Well, you'll always be our baby bird." "That's true." The voice of Stephanie suddenly chimed in from Barbara's end of the line. "Spoiler? Are you at the clocktower?"" "Yup," she said, and Robin could hear a smile in her voice. "But barely. I'm busy shivering." "Mhm," Stephanie said, taking a sip. "Bab's made me hot chocolate." "Lucky you." "Hey, I've been the one freezing my ass of for the last three hours for nothing!" She spoke. "The only thing I did was almost beat up someone trying to get into their own frozen car. Twice. And then I slipped, and I can totally feel my piss turning into ice right now." "Too much information, Steph," Oracle sighted, trying to cover her laugh.
"Anyways you're close; I see you're at the old church. Hop down and just go straight." "Thanks," Robin said. "Save me some of that hot chocolate." "Dream on, girl wonder." she laughed. "Spoiler, OUT."
Gotham Main Train Station The city felt like it died out after the temperature hit zero. The only sign that people ever live here were the giant Christmas decorations lighting up the whole main center. Blinking and sparkling illuminating the night. It would've been a short commune to the train station if it was not snowing dogs, so she took her time. But Robin liked avoiding broken bones. She had already had a fair share of them. It's not like a bunch of thugs could do that much damage in that short time.
Robin was wrong. Five minutes was a lot of time. By the time she arrived on the iced train rails, Mr. Freeze's thugs turned a train into Elsa's own personal home. Before they could do any more damage, a few silent takedowns later, interrogated one which only led to a teary apology, and dropped them off at the nearest police station in the span of half a hour.
The lights were on in the police station but there was only one sleepy police officer at the desk. He didn't even look up when Robin threw the criminals at his feet. The heaters were set to the minimum, but it felt heavenly. A yawn escaped out of her mouth. Her nose felt runny, and she could feel a bruise forming on her knee, from when she accidentally hit ice instead of her target. Before Robin got back on her way, she slammed the freeze gun on the cop's desk. At last, startled awake, his eyes swung wildly back and forth. Robin cleared her throat, crossed her arms and tried to suppress a smile as she shook her head in disappointment. He jolted up immediately, getting to work.
It reminded her of simpler times, when she just getting started her run as Robin. Her clothes were brighter and not that padded. But times changed. People died and came back. Became strangers. Wounds bled, new alliances were made, and more bad guys were put behind bars. It was a kick. It was pure adrenaline, not knowing when you've run out of your last batarang or the grapple gun not finding its target.
Maybe death only came when you've stopped pulling your punches.
Maybe that's why Damian wasn't here anymore.
The man she tried to interrogate managed to ram her as the policeman dragged the criminals out of the entrance area. Her left shoulder started to tingle from the sensation. "Stupid, I need to focus."
Then she turned around and performed a roundhouse kick that would make any karate master proud. The man slugged down to the ground. A satisfied rush went through her. The thugs followed the policeman without any further complaints.
Bright light suddenly shone through the dirty windows behind the desk. In two steps she stood in front of it. Between all the clouds, buildings and mist she could make out a bright light. The Batsignal.
Heck, maybe in some messed up reality she might even live to grow old. A life with no jumping from skyscrapers and dodging punches.
But then Robin tried to imagine a Gotham without Bruce as Batman and realized that she couldn't.
GCPD Finally her feet hit the top of the GCPD. Batman was already standing in front of the Batsignal with another figure. Robin could feel her skin heat up, the warmth of it, felt almost too overbearing. The light casted his shadow into a terrific giant light illusion that would scare any little kid.
The commissioner, held a cup in his hand with the words: "Gotham's best dad" printed on it, was already deeply invested in the conversation with the Bat. Robin was sure that Barbara gifted it to him the past easter. They had been shopping together, making fun of ridiculous sayings printed on random items in the dollar store. Barbara thought it would make a great gift. Robin even considered getting Bruce "World's okayest father" mug too, but refrained in the end.
Her boots crackled in the snow as she hopped over to the two men. The shoe prints she left behind poked little bats into the snow. Gordon shut the light off and Robin almost complained, as the fresh wind blew relentlessly against her.
"-be careful," Commissioner James Gordon warned. "The streets are harsher in the winter." "Oh, we know." Robin said going along the conversation with a smile. "We survived enough of them." Commissioner Gordon looked at her with a look Robin could not interpret. Normally there was a mixture of pride, acknowledgment and protection, she'd dare to say. With that clenched jaw his hand was a cigarette, that he took sporadic drags from. Didn't Barbara tell them that he quit in the summer? Jim looked like he'd been trought the ringer. He who always looked clean cut, had an unshaven beard and Robin could make out brown spill on his white linen shirt. He'd soon start to bald if he didn't take some time off. Robin took a half step back. She liked to avoid getting hit by father figures. So far, she hadn't been that successful.
Batman must've noticed James unusual behavior too.
"Why did you call us, Commissioner?" Gordon looked sick, as if the next words might strangle him. "It's the Joker. He broke out of Blackgate." He lifted his head to the sky, inspecting the hidden stars. Snowflakes turned into little water drops on his glasses.
Robin turned her head to Batman. Just for a split second, panic. Then it was gone. Straight faced and still; the perfect picture of tranquility, Batman asked only one thing: "How?"
Robin wanted to call out his name. His real name. "Bruce. No. Not again." But she didn't. Robin stood frozen as the air around her got thinner.
This was bad. Ra's Al Ghoul, Scarecrow, Two-Face kind of bad.
Arkham Asylum was located near Wayne Manor, while the island that housed Blackgate Prison was positioned at the other side of Gotham. Since the last riot in Arkham, the building has been left in an uninhabitable state. No construction company agreed to undertake the reconstruction so far. Now Arkham was empty, except for a few homeless junkies seeking refuge from winter. That meant the Joker was running wild in the city.
"He blackmailed his psychiatrists. Poor bastard's dead now." Robin tried to turn her grimace into a smile: "Well, we can't all be Harley Quinn's." The commissioner didn't need to say, "You're joking at a time like this?" His face said enough. With shaky fingers he took a breath from his cigarette. The cold, fear and age all accounted. "The GCPD are checking all his old hideouts and looking for new ones. Questioning old accomplices. Do you know where he might be?" "No." Batman admitted. "I'll get back to you, once we find out." "Okay. And I thought I would get one Christmas season off-." Gordon shook his head and after blowing out his cigarette smoke. "Just when my little girl wants to take me to the Wayne Gala tomorrow..."
The smell of his cigarette reminded Thea of past Christmases, spend with her mother and father. Her father and she would decorate the tree, as her mother sat at the fireplace, looking into the fire, smoking a cigarette. With the star in her small hands, her father would lift her up by the waist. As her mother crushedthe cigarette in the ashtray, Thea put the star on the top of the tree. The smell of Davidoff's classics was burnt into her nose to this day.
Batman signed Robin to go.
Without question Robin jumped up on the ledge and stood up straight on it. One harsh wind would send her flying into the abyss. Robin put her gloved fingers in a V formation and took a drag from her imaginary cigarette. She exhaled and a breath steam rose between her opened lips, smiling. "Those kill you, you 'kno?" Then she let herself drop into the darkness.
Batman heard the familiar clang as Robin's grapple gun found its target. He was ready to follow her example.
"Batman-" Gordon called, his back already turned back to the door. The Bat looked at him. And now he could see it, even from this angle, there, in Gordon's eyes: Pure anguish. "He's different this time. I don't know what it is, but it sure ain't good for us." "What do you mean?" the Batman asked "He didn't kill anyone beside the psychiatrist." The Bat lifted his head in surprise.
"My guess;" Gordon sighted. "The Joker wants people be there, to be alive for what he plans. He wants them to see."
"I'll stop him."
The wind whistled. "Better be. And-" Gordon turned around, the Bat already gone. "God, I hate it when he does that."
Back in the Batcave
Thea sat in Batman's chair which was in front of his computer. The Batcomputer could literally find any information and do just about anything, including DNA analysis and tracking down people all over the planet. One of the most advanced technological systems in the entire world. Together with Barbara she had already spent some fascinating hours until Batman chased them away. Now Barbara had built her own system in the clock tower and supported them from there. That didn't stop Thea from tinkering when no one was around- which was rare. Either Nightwing was arguing with Batman, Red Hood was working on his motorcycle, Alfred, bless his soul, pouring fresh tea as Spoiler was returning with information or Catwoman trying to steal it. Thea tried to ignore the fact that Catwoman was just retrieving forgotten items from another hot night with her lover. In the past, it wasn't even possible when Duke, Cassandra, Kate, Helena, and to her surprise, even Harley Quinn and other comrades, strutted in and out the cave.
Thea couldn't feel her toes. Her entire body felt like it was dipped into a pool filled with ice and then shot by Mr. Freeze's gun. The Dark Knight's headquarters even had one. With his wealth, Bruce had equipped the Batcave with modern technology necessary for a command center for an entire army. Several suits that they needed from time to time were stored all around. Multiple spares were in a lower level of the cave. There had been occasions where Damian stole all of their equipment, when Bruce told him that "No, we can't adopt the entire animal shelter."
It was pure chaos that night. Bruce had to drive to the nearest safe house, dressed only in his nightgown.
The freeze gun was behind a thick transparent wall, displayed like all other trophies Batman collected during his adventures. She never took Bruce as an emotional hoarder, but he did like to keep some memorabilia.
The giant penny on the wall. Thea looked through older files at the beginning of her first Robin run. Joe Coyne was fixated on pennies. Early in his criminal career, he even looted a cash register filled with pennies. He soon grew to appreciate the symbol of his failure and specialized in crimes involving pennies. Of course, he was eventually defeated by Batman, who kept the giant penny in as a memento.
In front of the penny, was Thea's least favorite item. The joker's yellow teeth distorted in a gleeful grin looked down on her. His pasty face was as white as the giant card it was printed on. She didn't want to think about him.
Her eyes wandered to Deathstroke's sword. A shiver trailed down her back as she remembered Dick's scar. It was on his belly, a deep straight line. Phantom pain spread through her as she tried to push back the memory of Dick's usual tan skin tunring ghostly white, like her own. Crimson's red blood was all over him, staining his Nightwing suit. Thea held his hand as Alfred stitched him back together. She had to wash her hands multiple times to get the dried blood out of her nails.
The mechanical Tyrannosaurus Rex has already frightened many a visitor. Dick always told a different story when asked how they got him. Once Batman fought alone in a theme park called "Dinosaur Island". Another time Dick was there, but the park was not. Thea was not sure how she trusted Dick in that regard.
With frozen fingers Thea tried to pry off her ice brimmed shoes. The lace's felt like icicles: too hard to budge and she considered dropping into bed with her entire suit on. So caught up in her efforts, she didn't even hear Alfred whisk down the stairs to the cave.
"Tea, Miss Drake?" He asked, putting down the tray on the desk, filled with high technology and irreplaceable gadgets. "Something stronger?" She asked jokingly, still pulling on the strings of her shoes. Alfred went down on one knee, slapping Thea's hand away and started to untie her shoes. "No." He said as he pulled a shoe off. "Then I'll take the tea." She let out in a satisfied sigh. "Two sugars, no milk?" The other was off now. "You know me, Alfred." The butler stood up and placed her shoes on the tinker table. "Will you join us for supper, after your shower?" "You cooked? But it's one am.?" Alfred sighted. "Miss Drake, must I remind you that any attempt at getting you "bats" to bed at a responsible time is impossible?" Thea laughed and nodded. "You're right. I'll be there in a second."
The second turned into half an hour under the shower. The warm water felt good on her aching bones. With dripping wet hair, she made her way into the dining hall. Once there was only Bruce, Thea and occasionally Dick coming over to eat. Now that their family had evolved and decided to take in their meals in the dining hall, all having their unofficial assigned seating. There used to be a bit of banter who was allowed to sit right and left next to Bruce who sat at the head of the table. Damian and Cassandra occupied that space once. Now both seats were empty.
Thea was not fond of picking up fights with thirteen-year-old or a one-sided conversation with Cass. But their absence was surprising striking. She didn't expect it to puzzle her, when Damien wasn't eating away her last cereal at breakfast or Cassandra wasn't leaving lost hair behind in the shower. It was annoying, yes, but now she ached for that kind of normalcy and routine of bickering and arguing.
The ghosts of Wayne Manor were here to haunt, not comfort.
Bruce sat already at his place, starring at the soup like it was a riddle. Steam rose from his soup as he stirred it with his spoon. The aroma of vegetable broth hung in the air. Thea's stomach grumbled. Seeing Bruce came as a surprise. He hadn't had a meal with them since a well...
Thea walked over to him, each of her steps felt like walking into a certain death. Somehow her fingers started to feel ice cold again and she started to fumble with Damien's seat as she stood behind it. The wood under her fingers felt lived in, like it has been used for years. Under her index finger she could feel a cut. It must've been from when Damian tried to stab Jason with a butter knife.
"Hey," Thea said. Bruce's eyes darting from his soup to her hands and face.
"Not a word about the Joker," he ordered. "Especially not to Jason."
Thea stopped rubbing the hollow cut. She tiled her head, eyebrows furrowing in the process of asking: "Why?"
"He killed his psychiatrist."
"Yes?" Thea asked and felt stupid as the one-word question left her mouth. "Do you know who he is?"
"Thea," he said, his look unreadable. "That man was Jason's psychiatrist."
All alarm bells were ringing in her head. "Both Jason and the Joker had the same psychiatrist? That's allowed?" Or rather; "How did you allow that?" she wanted to ask, but held her tongue.
"I didn't know."
Thea let out a scoff. "The Batman didn't know?"
"I'll deal with it, Thea."
"You knew," she realized, letting the chair go. "You knew that the Joker would break out."
"Yes," he sighted in defeat. "He always does."
His words were a slap to the face. Thea retreated. She didn't need to know why he didn't tell her. Why he didn't tell them. But it still hurt. More than a punch.
"Why did you allow it?" her voice was a harsh whisper.
Her right hand clenched into a fist. Bruce eyes darkened, and she wanted to retreat, give up the mantle and never speak to Batman ever again. But she didn't. So she stared back. Four blue eyes in a battle of trying to figure the other out.
Thea could not explain it. Looking at him, out of his cowl, always seemed... off.
Of course, Bruce was a human with emotions and skin, but as the Batman... it was like he wasn't even real, by normal standards. When he would start to mix Batman and Bruce, the chills building under skin could not be stopped. With him behind the mask, she could pretend the world had a mask on too.
Black and white, good and bad, alive and dead. Taking it off, felt like betrayal to everything she did, justifying it behind spandex and bloody noses. Gotham could be saved with bruised fists. Not justice by the book.
Thea was surprised by the intensity of her voice. "It's not just about you when it's about-, when it's him. It's personal for all of us."
"You-," Bruce began, but shut his eyes taking a deep breath. "You don't understand him, you don't get the Joker. Not like I do."
Thea hated that weird pseudo relationship always lurching between the Joker and the Bat. It never failed to make her skin crawl. No matter how many hours she spent analyzing old cases concerning the Joker, the things he did... to friends, colleagues, strangers, to his family... words couldn't convey the disgust he felt for just having to look at that decaying man. And the smell- the smell he carried.
"Talk to me." She almost begged. Talk, please. Anything. Anything. Just talk to me. I need to know. I have to know. "I'm your Robin. I trust you," she said. "You need to trust me too."
Thea wished he never muttered these words.
"Damian was Robin too."
Thea could see grey streaks growing in his jet-black hair. His eyes were no longer only covered by dark eyebags but fine lines too. Once fresh scars were now mere white lines on his skin, reminders of victorious fights. Thea needs to catch her breath every time she thought of Bruce's naked back. Between the defined muscles was years of abuse. Harsh angry lines, puncture points and healed scars between the fresh ones. Each one like a cut to her own body, reminders of how she should be there to deflect them. She wanted to reach out, take them from him and add them to her own collection of hurt.
"I'm not Damian." I'm not dead. "And I don't plan on being."
But now he was glancing at her with that look on his face, something between condescending and pity. Thea wanted to scream the words: "After everything?" Am I still not good enough?
"He'll be back in Arkham by Christmas." he said. "I promise." Bruce shook his head, turning away and suddenly he seemed just so... old. And so, the knife twisted a little deeper.
Before Thea could open her mouth again, shuffling of feet was heard from the open door. Three voices, two men and one woman were involved in a heated conversation.
"He fell," Jason stated.
"Into your knife?" Stephanie asked, raising an eyebrow.
Dick seemed unconvinced too: "Twenty times?"
"It was years ago. And no, only twelve times." Jason shrugged and walked into the room. "You guys are hypocrites!"
Dick looked at Stephanie with a "can you believe this guy?" face but sat down at his seat. He looked at Thea and then at her clenched shaking fist. His blue eyes narrowed and then jumped to Bruce.
"Is everything alright?" he asked, more demanding than anything else.
His eyes weren't blue like the ones of Bruce and Thea. Something mischievous was always blinking in that ocean of iris. There were hundreds of times when those eyes grounded, encouraged and fought with her. She wouldn't trade them for the world.
Stephanie's and Jason's head's shot up too. Thea could almost hear the circuits moving in their heads. Stephanie and Jason exchanged side glances while Dick's nostrils flared up. Man, lying to the world's best detectives was demanding. Bruce gave Thea once of those looks, that she knew she could not ignore.
"Nothing." Bruce and Thea said almost immediately and at the same time.
"We're just debating about who's taking over Condiment King," she lied with enough conviction to surprise even herself. "He's going on crazy rampage."
"Nope," Steph said, raising her hands immediately in front of her body. "Not me, nu-hu."
Jason was fast to chime in: "I'm allergic to mayonnaise."
"You're lactose intolerant?" Stephanie asked.
"No," he admitted. "Only to assholes who decide it's a good idea to shot people with it. I mean, just use bullets like every other normal person."
"I don't really consider shooting people "normal" Jason," Dick crossed his arms, "And well, I took him out last time-"
"Then the stench of ketchup hasn't washed out of your suit yet, great!" Thea said. "Thanks Dick, you're the best!"
"What? No, that wasn't a-"
"We love you!" Steph chimed in.
"Amazing Grayson!" Jason hollered unenthusiastic; his hands cusped into a megaphone at his mouth. "Whop-whop."
Bruce clapped once and the entire room went still. "Then that's settled. Who's ready for dinner?"
Thea hoped that they were convinced. Dick was already chatting up a different subject. Stephanie opened her mouth to counter. Just Jason looked between Thea and Bruce with a raised eyebrow. Then Dick nudged him, and an unsure smile spread on his lips as he joined the conversation. Maybe they all knew that there was something brewing in the air and just wanted to protect the peace.
Thea would tell them. Just not tonight. Neither at tomorrow's gala nor Christmas Eve. When it was all over. Then maybe she just wouldn't have to say anything. Thea just hoped that this was a case that the Batman could solve fast enough.

FLIGHTLINE: 179 - SAAB J 21/21R
Development of the SAAB 21, a low-wing pusher design, began in late 1939 over fears by the Swedish Air Force over being drawn into WW2.
The Svenska flygvapnet, or Swedish Air Force, was formed on 1 July 1926 after the aircraft units of the Army and Navy were spun-off and merged. The inter-war flygvapnet fighter force was composed of a hodgepodge of WWI-era biplanes from France, the UK and Germany, and the gathering war clouds over Europe made the Swedes seek a more modern fighter plane, preferably of domestic manufacture. It was estimated that Sweden's production capacity was unable to meet the needs of the air force until 1943 at best, and the county was forced to buy a brace of obsolete Fiat Cr. 42 biplanes as an interim measure.
SAAB J 21
SAAB (Svenska Aeroplan AB), founded in 1937, had been working on design studies during the late 1930s, many of which were of unconventional configuration, and most incorporated the Bristol Taurus radial engine. SAAB's engineers hit upon the idea of mounting the engine behind the pilot, driving a pusher prop with the tail and elevator mounted on twin booms extending back from the wing. This configuration would allow the plane's weapons to be mounted in the nose and provide the pilot with an unobstructed view. It was also felt that the low wing and tricycle undercarriage would provide easy servicing of the plane. During the design phase, the Taurus engine was rejected as being underpowered and the P&W R-1830 Twin Wasp was proposed in its place. The Swedish government wanted a domestic alternative, and Svenska Flygmotor was tapped to produce a licensed version of the Daimler-Benz DB 605B inverted V-12, which produced 1,455hp.

The new plane, designated the SAAB J 21, was 10.45m long, with a wingspan of 11.6m and was 3.97m tall. The J 21 was light, weighing just 3,250kg empty and having a max TO weight of 5,200kg. The license-built BD 605B, coupled to a three-blade constant-speed prop, gave the plane a maximum speed of 650kmh and a cruise speed of 495kmh, while the 510l internal fuel load provided a ferry range of 1,190km and a combat range of 750km. The pusher configuration allowed a heavy load of forward-firing weapons, with a 20mm akan m/41A and two 13.2mm akan m/39A cannons in the nose and two more m/39A in the wings. The 21 was fitted with tricycle landing gear, with the main gear retracting into the booms as the SAAB-designed laminar flow wings were too thin. Another innovation of the aircraft was an ejection seat for the pilot, designed in tandem with the J 21, by Bofors, which allowed the pilot to clear the prop and tail in case of an emergency. The engine's coolers and intakes were housed in the central section of the wing in order to reduce drag.

Two flying prototypes and one static test airframe were built, with the maiden flight of the J 21 occurring on 20 July 1943. The test flight, with SAAB test pilot Claes Smith at the controls, got off to an inauspicious start when Smith used too much flap on takeoff, resulting in the undercarriage striking a fence at the end of the runway. The pilot was able to land without further incident, and the damage was repaired. Delivery of the production J 21A-1 aircraft began on 1 December 1945, with 54 aircraft delivered by 5 December 1946, when production shifted to the more advanced J 21A-2 model. Both the A-1 and A-2 differed from the prototypes in having provisions for two drop tanks of 160l each, and the A-2 differed in having upgraded avionics as well as the m/41A cannon replaced by a Bofors belt-fed akan m/45, also in 20mm. A third model, the J 21A-3 (later redesignated A 21A), was based on the A-2, but was configured for attack missions, and was fitted with a bomb-aiming system as well as pylons on the inner and outer wings, as well as a belly mount, which could accommodate 700kg of bombs or rockets. Drop tanks could be added to the wingtips, and incendiary bombs and napalm tanks were tested, but not used operationally. The A 21A was later fitted with mounts for two RATO bottles to improve takeoffs when carrying heavy loads. Production of the attack model ran from 1947 to 1949, and totaled 66 aircraft.

A fourth model, the J 21B, was initially proposed in 1947, with the 605B engine replaced by either a more powerful 605E or Rolls-Royce Griffon motor. Changes also included a pressurized cockpit with a bubble canopy, improved aerodynamics, an air-intercept radar in the starboard boom, and a change to three 20mm cannon in the nose. Development of jet engines, particularly for SAAB's own J 29 fighter, saw the J 21B canceled in 1945, with only a mockup completed. The post-war shift to jet aircraft also saw the J21As having a short service life, with the A-1s being retired in 1949, and the A-2 and A-3 following in the early 1950s. By 23 July 1954, all of the J 21As were gone from the Swedish Air Force. Three examples remain as museum exhibits, all A-3s, with one having been rebuilt as an A 21R.

SAAB J 21R
Almost before the J 21 was accepted for service, plans were underway to increase the performance of the aircraft. Aside from the stillborn J 21B, two studies by SAAB, RX 1 and RX 2, which were twin boom aircraft resembling the J 21 but with a jet engine replacing the 605B. Neither program had a specific engine in mind, but an opportunity to acquire a license for the de Havilland Goblin 2 turbojet in 1945 provided the impetus to begin plans to convert a J 21 to accept the new jet. The modified aircraft, SAAB's first jet-powered plane, took its maiden flight on 10 March 1947, and the test program was satisfactory enough that the Swedish Air Force ordered 124 existing J 21s to be converted to jet power, with the resulting aircraft designated J 21R; 4 examples were built as prototypes.
Tumblr media

The process of converting the A models to R spec was rather intensive, with more than 50% of the fuselage, wing and tail being modified. In particular, the tail was modified to allow the horizontal stabilizer to be raised several feet in order to clear the jet's exhaust. The lack of a propeller meant that the aircraft was overall shorter than the As however, being just under three meters tall versus the almost four meters of the A model. The changes resulted in the R model being somewhat longer than its predecessor, but the wingspan was a third of a meter shorter. A new, curved windscreen was added, as were air brakes, an additional flap on either side, and a modified leading edge. The thirst of the Goblin engine, designated the RM1 in Swedish service, meant the addition of extra fuel tanks in the center wing as well as tip tanks as seen on the A-2 and -3 models, bringing the 21R to a max TO weight of 5,615kg. The main armament remained one 20mm m/45 and four 12.7mm m/39A, with one hard point on the belly allowing carriage of 700kg of stores, including various 10, 14.5, 15 or 18cm rockets, or a paddan ("toad") gunpod, armed with eight 8mm Browning M1919 machine guns, along with 800 rounds per gun.

Conversion of newly-retired J 21A-1s began in 1947, with the first 30 receiving British-built engines. The type entered service in 1950, but SAAB had also introduced the J 29 Tunnan two years prior, and the 21R was relegated to attack duties, being redesignated the A 21RA. With the shift to attack missions, the order of 124 was cut to just 64, with the second run of A 21RB aircraft receiving Swedish-built RM1A engines, which provided 1,500kg of thrust vs the 1,360kg of the RM1. The A 21R had a very short service life, with the RA model being retired in 1953, and the RB being withdrawn in 1956. So swiftly was the 21R withdrawn that no examples were preserved. In the 1990s a surviving, but unrestored, A 21A-3 was restored and modified by a group of volunteers to represent an A 21R, which is now on display at the Swedish Air Force Museum.

Sometimes the best Christmas presents are the ones we don’t think we need; a new Christmas Carol, for instance. Indeed it may be indicative of a certain unappreciated vacancy around the Christmas tree that in discussing the BBC’s new version of the Dickens classic both its director and leading man refer back to The Muppet Christmas Carol made way back in 1992.
“I was sent the script,” admits Nick Murphy, best known for directing the Rebecca Hall ghost movie The Awakening, “and my first thought was, ‘For God’s sake! The Muppets! They nailed it. What’s the point?’ ”
Joe Alwyn, who plays Scrooge’s clerk Bob Cratchit in the BBC three-parter, has meanwhile posted a trailer on Instagram with the caption: “Hard to fill the shoes once worn by Kermit. But I tried.” The self-deprecation was quickly “hearted” by the singer Taylor Swift, who is the actor’s girlfriend and who will be watching the mini-series with Alwyn and his family in London in the final days before Christmas.
There is nothing wrong, of course, with The Muppet Christmas Carol. It is probably in most people’s top three adaptations of Dickens’s masterpiece (alongside, I would say, Alastair Sim’s 1951 version and Scrooged). Its endurance does suggest, however, that it may be time someone did something a bit more serious, a little darker and a touch more grown-up with a tale that excoriated Victorian neglect and associated Christmas with the relief of poverty for ever more.
And this is exactly what Nick Murphy has achieved with a bracingly fresh script by the Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Guy Pearce’s Ebenezer Scrooge is still a “squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner”, but since Pearce is only 52, there is rather less of the old. At the end of the novel, Dickens wrote that “ever afterwards” — that is after Scrooge’s Very Bad Night — “it was always said of him that he knew how to keep Christmas well”. That is rather more of an achievement when, as in this version, you may have 40 Christmases, rather than a couple, left to you.
Equally remade is Cratchit, who in Alwyn’s incarnation is far from the bashfully gulping frog thanking his master for granting him Christmas Day off before scampering back to Miss Piggy’s fleshy arms. Although Alwyn grew a rough beard for the part, his is also the best-looking Bob Cratchit you have seen. As the actor and I talk at the Picturehouse Central cinema in London, I find him as mesmerising off screen as on.
“Bob is trapped by Scrooge,” Alwyn says. “He’s abused by him. He’s not treated fairly. He’s there only because he has to be. He’s treated like shit.”
I’d say there’s a definite feeling in their shared scenes that Bob might just snap and hit Ebenezer over the head with a poker. “That was the intention. He’s at breaking point. He’s pushed right to his limits and Scrooge, I think, relishes winding him up. All Bob can do is hold his ground and fight back as much as he can — but he isn’t such a sap in this version.”
Scrooge and Cratchit’s relationship so much resembles an unhappy marriage that the niggling, bitter exchanges invented by Knight, with very little reference to Dickens’s dialogue, resemble Steptoe and Son rewritten by Strindberg. The easy contrast would have been with the Cratchits’ poor but happy marriage, but this too comes under scrutiny. There is an acknowledgment of the challenges a disabled child can bring to a household, and it is somehow emphasised by Tiny Tim being played by Lenny Rush, an extraordinary young actor, aged ten, who has a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, the same condition as Warwick Davis.
“It really mattered to me that nobody was photo-fit,” Murphy says from a studio where he is dubbing the last episode. “Bob Cratchit is always a winsome, put-upon nice guy and the Cratchits themselves represent this idea of an ideal, working-class, lovely family. So we looked into their relationship on the page and there seems a genuine tension between Bob and his wife. Things are hard. It isn’t easy to have no money and a disabled child, and they lean on each other and they’re not straight with each other and there is a genuine antagonism between them.”
Knight has written into the narrative a family secret that connects the Cratchits to Scrooge. The secret belongs to Mrs Cratchit, played by Vinette Robinson, whose part is greatly expanded; indeed, the novella does not even grant her a first name, although the Muppets, and other adaptors, opted for Emily.
“Inevitably the secret begins to surface and cracks appear in the family,” Alwyn says. “Something has to happen. I think what Steven has done is take the story and drill deeper. He hasn’t taken too much liberty. It’s not bending the truth too much from what Dickens would have wanted. Or I hope not.”
Murphy insists that worthwhile adaptations of classic texts should be “edgy” and have “a good bite to them”. “If you absolutely don’t want any variation from the book then I strongly suggest you sit in a corner at Christmas and read it again. But if you want to see it used as a prism through which we can see a broader and slightly different subject explored, then this one’s for you.”
Alwyn’s performance is part of the iconoclasm. “Joe’s instinct as an actor is always to push away from the obvious and into ambiguity,” Murphy says. “He’s very quietly spoken. He’s not brash at all. He’s a gentle, intelligent guy, but he just simply wasn’t interested in fitting a Dickensian cliché.”
“I’ll take that,” Alwyn says when I pass on the compliment, having not considered his technique in such terms. He is 28 and would probably accept that he is best known for two facts: the first is that he is Taylor Swift’s boyfriend; the second that, aged 25 and with no professional acting experience, he won the title role in an Ang Lee movie.
He is from north London, the middle of three sons. Their father is the television documentary-maker Richard Alwyn, renowned for making The Shrine about the public reaction to Princess Diana’s death.
“He was away a bit,” Alwyn says. “He made quite a lot of films in Africa when I was growing up. He was often in Uganda, Rwanda at one point, South Sudan. So he’d come back with stories and artefacts from all over the place. He made a great documentary in Liverpool during the World Cup about two kids on an estate growing up there.”
His mother, Elizabeth, is a psychotherapist. So, I say, although his family were comfortably off and he was sent to the fee-paying City of London School, he knew something of other people’s lives?
“All different kinds of people, all different kinds of stories,” he says. “Obviously, she couldn’t share them with me in the same way that Dad could, but both their jobs take an interest in other people and are about how to empathise, understand, and listen to stories and tell stories. I suppose it’s not a million miles away from an actor’s job; listening to other people, understanding them, trying to tell stories.”
I ask about the contemporary political resonances of A Christmas Carol. I cite the wealth of certain members of his profession and of Swift’s. Only the other day I have read that she has a private jet so she can visit Alwyn on a whim. He promises me that 99.9 per cent of what the press write about them is false, and this is an example.
I ask if he finds it embarrassing.
“Find what embarrassing?”
The disparity between the amount some people earn and the wages of workers in, say, Amazon fulfilment centres.
“I saw something in The Guardian the other day, I think, saying that the top six richest people in the UK accumulate the same amount of wealth as the poorest 13 million. I think that was the figure,” he says.
And politics today?
“It’s bigger than Scrooge, but it’s the same thing amplified; not being able to see beyond yourself, building walls, cutting yourself off from other countries. If there was ever a story to counter that, featuring someone who epitomises that and then who remembers who he is as a human being, it is A Christmas Carol.”
Unlike the young Dickens, Alwyn was not a boy to stand on a table and sing and dance. As a child he auditioned to play Liam Neeson’s son in the Richard Curtis film Love Actually, but didn’t get it. He harboured ambitions to act, but pursued them only later at the University of Bristol, where he took plays up to the Edinburgh Fringe. One night he acted before an audience of one: the writer’s mother. Undeterred, he went on to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, joining the scramble at the end to find an agent. Weeks later, his new agent rang to say that Ang Lee was working on a new film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, and wanted to see an audition tape.
“I got some mates to film me in a lunch break and then my dad filmed another scene, and we got a call that night saying, ‘He wants to meet you this weekend. He’s saying, we’re going to put you on a plane and take you out of school. Come for the weekend. Learn these scenes.’ ”
As Billy, a young US Marine fêted for killing an enemy assailant in Iraq, Alwyn was painfully believable; a virgin solider returning home to be exploited for an act that had devastated him. The film did not do well, mainly because it was shot at a hyper-reality frame rate that few cinemas had the technology to show, but Alwyn was on his way.
“Things only evolve by change and people taking risks,” he says. “And Ang Lee is someone who I admire for that. None of his films are the same. Maybe thematically they draw on the same things, but he’s always pushing the boundaries.”
The same can be said for A Christmas Carol and, even more, about Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite, in which Alwyn appeared alongside Emma Stone and Olivia Colman. It applies less so to his other recent films, Mary Queen of Scots, Boy Erased and now Harriet, a faithful biopic about the slave liberator Harriet Tubman in which he played a slave owner’s son. What he has managed to do consistently is work and learn from some seriously good actresses — Colman, Stone, Saoirse Ronan and Cynthia Erivo. “I know. I am targeting them,” he jokes.
I tell him my daughters have insisted I ask if he minds Swift writing songs about him (whole albums, actually, but check out London Boy if you are in search of a little cringe). “No, not at all. No. It’s flattering.”
Does it matter to him that the press — it’s a bit metatextual this, I admit, for I’m probably doing the same thing — make it obvious that they are as interested in his girlfriend as they are in him? “I just don’t pay attention to what I don’t want to pay attention to,” he explains tolerantly. “I turn everything else down on a dial. I don’t have any interest in tabloids. I know what I want to do, and that’s this, and that’s what I am doing.”
The boyf, described only the other day as “mysterious” in one of those tabloids, is no mystery at all. He knows what he wants for Christmas, and it is the career he is already forging.
A Christmas Carol begins on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday

in time | dex, lyla&hunter (canon)
Dex rarely ever plans on seeing his daughter. More often than not he simply misses her or finds an excuse for his errands to run close to her home and finds himself knocking on her door unannounced on a Saturday afternoon as he is now. He hopes she’s home, if not, he’ll be back sooner rather than later.
But she is and when Lyla opens the door there’s a little boy strapped to her chest, a few months old at best, cooing as he holds a fist full of her hair. The sight gives Dex pause. He opens his mouth to ask but is frozen because his mind has registered that the dark-haired child, despite having no blood relation, looks already like he could be a younger brother of Nils, could be the son of a somewhat estranged friend.
“Nova’s down for a nap,” Lyla explains without being asked once Dex has taken his shoes off by the door. “But Hunter works on his own schedule. Don’t you, babe?”
The child babbles at Lyla and for a moment, Dex thinks Lyla might simply miss having a baby in her arms now that Nova is wobbling around on her own two feet, insisting on being all too independent.
But the thought of another grandchild is disrupted by his gaze, stuck on the infant gripping to his daughter with such trust. And yet, Dex himself had never met the baby before, never even set eyes on him and the disconnect nearly takes his breath away.
He moves closer, leaning in to greet the child for the first time in either of their lives. “Hello, darling,” he speaks softly, but Hunter still regards him with caution.
It’s been nearly a year since Dex saw the boy’s father last, in the very mansion where their lives changed forever. Months and months since Bristol himself had asked for space and embarked on finding his footing in what was the new normal for them all.
Looking into Hunter’s big, unblinking eyes forces Dex to confront that boy’s presence in their lives is a direct result of his own transgressions and he isn’t sure how to feel about it outside of the small lump forming in his throat.
“Can I hold him?” Dex asks Lyla quietly, adhering to the gentleness that Hunter seems to call for with his demeanor.
Lyla hesitates, but nods. “That’s up to him, but you can try.”
It’s Dex that reaches to undo the harness holding Hunter up so he can carefully bring the boy into his arms, and sure enough, he fusses at first. But Dex bounces Hunter carefully, his arms protectively around the baby, nose to jet black hair. He speaks in mild tones until Hunter settles into small coos of interest.
“You are so loved,” Dex whispers against Hunter’s forehead as he did to Luca once. He wonders if Hunter will grow up calling him “uncle” like the rest of his friends’ kids do, or if the boy will even know him at all.
Drawing back to gaze into Hunter’s eyes once more, Dex can almost see Bristol’s as they sat over their last drink together. He can almost hear Bristol admit that Dex himself had triggered the most painful occurrence in his life and he licks his lips before he amends his sentence to admit to Hunter, “You and your dad are so loved.”
His heart aches for the unshakeable bonds, the comfortable and easy laughter that everyone shared together mere months ago. Before the split get-togethers, the tiptoeing around sensitive subjects, before he felt guilty for not regretting any of his actions.
As it stands, his friends are the family he’s known for a long time- and Bristol was- is...very definitively part of that family. And so he tells the boy, “You are home with us, alright?”
Hunter’s small fingers tangle into his beard and Dex’s voice crackles, “You are a part of our family, sweet boy.”
Part of Dex hopes that simply saying so can will the statement into existence, and even if he can’t, he’s grateful that Bristol still at least, trusts his daughter so deeply with this precious little boy, who deserves every bit of protectiveness shown over him.
With a deep breath to pull himself out of the murky emotional waters he’d began wading into, Dex turned his attention back to Lyla. “Is he going to get picked up soon?”
“Probably?” Lyla shrugs, glancing at the clock in her living room. “Nils and Bris went out to lunch a few hours ago, they should be back any minute.”
And Dex is moving to hand Hunter back to her. “Ah, okay.”
Lyla hates the shift and as she secures the baby against her chest once more she insists, “Dad, stay…”
But Dex holds up a hand, “It’s alright, I’ll see you soon. And perhaps…” he smiles, albeit somberly as he reaches out a finger for Hunter to hold in goodbye, “I’ll see you soon as well.”
He takes off mere moments before two other men apparate back to the house and despite it all, Lyla thinks Bristol would have been warmed, happy even to see his son in such familiar company.

@drcomalfy     —–     draco
he has wings. they're made from talent and ambition, gifted to him by youth and potential, and the larger they grow the higher he soars. what would icarus have done had his withstood the sun? few have so many doors opened for them by simply being themselves —– no, for many the opposite applies. ( do you know how fortunate you are? )
roger davies is on a straight trajectory, straight upwards and towards the skies. things are running so smoothly and so swiftly and just in his favour; it seems sometimes like his life is a fiction. barely impacted by the war, it could as well have been but a stutter in his career, half a year’s holiday in southern france with his family. it was exile, not leisure —– the dread, they felt it, but cool saltwater waves and apricot frangipane tarts begged for it to be put aside. after all, they were safe and sound. he waited patiently on the sidelines for things to blow over, and with a little patience, they did just that. it was impossibly, unfairly easy. ( how did you deserve to be this fortunate? )
for someone so stupidly lucky to have evaded the laws of nature like he has, he surely does push against the limits of what is given to him, in the belief it might yield more. how arrogant, how selfish, to demand more than you already have when what you have is everything. roger is rich in material and mind, yet what he wants is freedom. a craving for a feeling so elusive is practically insatiable, it doesn’t seem like he’ll ever be satisfied.
this path he fell onto, then, it welcomes him with open arms: it is just what he needs, and he is made for it. the energy, the challenge, the pace, it is a rush he cannot live without anymore if he ever could. it’s consuming his waking hours, and though there are different ways of evoking it, nothing gives him the true, unadulterated feeling of freedom like flying. in a world where convenience is at the forefront of priorities and motivation, sometimes the little pleasures are sacrificed for no better reason than efficiency. roger could be wherever he wants to be in an instant, nonetheless he is yet to accept the nausea of apparating. he has the time, so why should he not use his broomstick for what it was designed for?
nothing beats flying over the severn estuary, where waters meet of three rivers that run by the places where his heart is most at home. it is the middle of the night, and silver moonlight swims on the jet black ocean waves, now and then mingling with the yellow reflections from cities and bridges afar. no need to worry about being seen, and at this hour he only shares air traffic with owls and bats. a great calm overcomes him as he races the waves towards home, their crests rearing up as if to catch him before he can win. he might as well be the wind, whipping them on towards the shore. it’s these circumstances, detached from routined reality, that conversely make him feel the most real.
his mind is lost in the thrill of it all when he spots a figure moving ahead of him. it doesn’t take long to realize that it is someone flying a broomstick, more or less at the same speed as roger, in the same direction. automatically, he accelerates. if these brooms had an engine, he would be revving his loudly now, not as a sign of aggression but acknowledgment, just between you and me, tempo to tempo. a few times he accelerates, barely close enough to recognize any distinctive features but surely for the other to register him in their peripheral vision, then he falls back again.
it's just a game, harmless fun —– meaningless, really. provocation at best, some attention. what else is he supposed to do? chasers love the chase. ( oh, but you know well enough: other tongues call you the hunters, and you are playing the part. ) soon, they are engulfed by the lights of bristol harbour, still pursuing the same direction. this was fun while it lasted, but the building block houses and narrow alleys are not as giving as the river’s wide mouth, and so roger decides to take the more direct route. he leans into the wind and his comet shoots forward swiftly; perhaps it too can tell it is homebound.
he has almost lost interest in the other flyer, whose velocity he now exceeds, but out of curiosity, he shoots him a glance in passing. the light of street lanterns paint him in monochromatic yellow, but roger recognizes slytherin’s silver boy nonetheless. immediately, his speed is throttled until the other catches up. they’re a few metres apart, and roger has to raise his voice against the wind.
Tumblr media
“ malfoy! ” his call is accompanied by a high wave of his hand, if he has his attention already he wouldn’t mind more of it. “ what are you doing, man? ” he means his words with genuine curiosity, although they could be construed as rebuke —– he is surprised and amused, but tone doesn’t carry well when sound itself struggles to reach against the wind in the first place. perhaps they should land; the younger slytherin never struck roger as the chatty type, but much has happened since they last saw each other, and people change.

Traveling to Africa
The anticipation and logistics leading up to the trip were like nothing I can recall. Partly due to lack of major adventures this past two years, but also made more complex with COVID precautions and necessary documents.
Carrie at Embark (our expedition leader) was helpful with getting us to secure our Tanzania visa in advance, although convincing our IT security firewall as well as our credit card company that these $100 transactions with the Tanzanian government were legitimate was a whole other deal!
Then there were health declaration documents that needed to be completed for Amsterdam and Tanzania, along with the regular declaration stuff (why are you coming here, where and how long are you staying …).
Next was the health documentation - copies of our vaccination records, and securing PCR COVID testing the day before we traveled. One of my biggest sources of angst the past few weeks was “what if after all this time and planning, one of us tested positive?” Jeff and I were tested Wednesday at 8 am, and I checked the “MyChart” no less than 30 times that day. Just before 8 pm, we got our negative results and our travel companions all got theirs about the same time - huge sigh of relief. Our travel doc wrote a letter certifying we had been fully vaccinated and tested negative by PCR, but she warned us that many travelers reported being extorted and having to submit to COVID tests when they arrived at their destinations, so we went trying to stay open minded and ready for anything.
The packing logistics were a bit challenging, but we had all that time together hiking the IAT to discuss, plus Embark provided us with great guidance including lists and videos. Jeff and I “practice packed” our waterproof duffels (we bought 70L NRS roll top bags like we’d used on our river trip last year). We’ll take those on the trek with our sleeping bags and extra clothes, but they’ll need to be under 30 pounds as the porters will be carrying them on their heads. After our practice pack, we loaded them up with extra clothes and toiletries that won’t be part of the trek. We put our backpacks inside of other packs and carried those on the plane. Once we arrive in Tanzania, we’ll be able to leave our safari clothes and extra stuff at the hotel during our hike, and then leave our hiking stuff while we safari - so the extra bag will come in handy!
We left home about noon on Thursday, with Ryan dropping us off at the airport. We met Gary at the check-in desk, and the lady there did a thorough check of our travel documents - health record including vaccination and testing record, Tanzania visa and of course our passports. Our boarding passes were marked with “documents checked,” and surprisingly, we didn’t have to show any other documents the whole trip. Nonetheless, my usual travel binder was twice as full as usual with reservation confirmations, our travel insurance policy, and all of the previously completed declarations and visa documents.
It was an easy trip to Detroit. Jeff and I got a complimentary upgrade to First Class which was nice. I had a gin and tonic and a bag of almonds - nice relaxing start to a long travel expedition! We had about 2 hours in Detroit, so we first went to the Delta Club, where it was no charge to bring Gary along. We filled up on salads and stuffed extra cookies into our bags.
The plane from Detroit to Amsterdam was about half full, so we had the middle Comfort Plus row to ourselves, which made it easy to get up and move about when your seat partner was sleeping or watching a movie. The mediocre airline food wasn’t such a big deal since we’d filled up at the Delta Club in Detroit, and knew we’d have access to the KLM lounge in Amsterdam.
I think we arrived about 8am on Friday. We walked a few gates, looked at the status board and found we were practically right at our departure gate … and there we found Kent & Lynn and Dan & Tam who had arrived earlier from Chicago. We had two hours to kill, so we brushed our teeth, walked a bit, went to the KLM club, Jeff and Gary played some cribbage. Then before we knew it, we were loading onto the KLM jet for our eight hour fight to Kilimanjaro Airport in Arusha, Tanzania. I had a window seat, and most of Europe was cloudy, but it cleared up to see some mountains, sweeping coastlines somewhere over the Mediterranean … and then it was dark again - felt like the shortest day ever.
We arrived in Tanzania shortly after 9 pm, and joined the tired and confused crowd walking down the stairs onto the tarmac. Our first bottleneck came where one guy was holding back a crowd of hundreds, making us produce our boarding passes to get past him (we just came off that airplane, how would we have gotten there without a boarding pass?). Then about an hour wait to get to the “health screening” desk which was set up outside. A women took our temperature and wrote down a control number on a scrap of paper. She told us to go to another desk to pay $10 for our COVID test. I realized that was part of the online form we’d filled out before leaving home. She wasn’t interested in seeing the results we’d brought with us. The only way into Tanzania was to stand in another line, have your brain poked by a guy in a white lab coat (hope those were fresh gloves), and then wait until your name is called with the results. Then another long wait in the border control line. Those of us with prepaid visas had a different line, but it didn’t seem to be faster one way or the other.
Gary got through first, Jeff and I about 10 minutes later - only to discover that Jeff checked bag didn’t make it. To make it even more confusing, his bag had his luggage tickets (and priority handling tag), but the airline barcode sticker had my name on it. So the airline thinks they’ve lost my bag, but when they find it, it’ll look like it belongs to someone else. Jeff found a helpful guy to start the claim, and he found that in Amsterdam, the bag way loaded onto a different bag and went to Nairobi instead. He said, no problem, we’ll get it delivered to you tomorrow (we’ll see).
The other four were further back in the plane, and therefore, they were practically the last group to clear customs. Tam had just learned that our hotel in Moshi was changed, so we were able to go back and modify our claim to hopefully get the bag routed to the right place. We’ve had this work out okay once before (coincidentally, with a transfer in Amsterdam), so fingers crossed that it works out this time too! All of his hiking gear is in that bag!
It was nearly midnight when we got outside and connected with the transport that Embark had arranged. A guide named Hans, and a driver whose name I didn’t capture. Now we were faced with the unsettling feeling that comes on a bus, driving on the left side, with headlights barreling at you in what seems like the wrong side of the road. It was about an hour to Moshi, with a rough road, several small settlements where we’d slow down, speed bumps and rough train tracks. We were glad to get to our new accommodations: Bristol Cottages, and find they were expecting us!
Our cottage was rustic, but clean. Two single beds, each with a bundle of mosquito netting hung over the bed (we didn’t use it, have been taking anti-malaria medication for 5 days now and hope that’s enough). I unpacked and organized my stuff. Jeff, not having much stuff, brushed his teeth and promptly fell into a deep sleep.
Just over 24 hours of travel time, including waiting for planes. The long flights were pretty comfortable and we napped intermittently … but are now feeling completely exhausted and will sleep good tonight!
