Bradley watches his little fox scamper off into the darkness, silently counting down the seconds until he can begin the hunt. Usually, they have a strict rule against selecting their prey from the employees of the restaurant or bar they were scouting out, however, the second Bradley saw you, he knew you were the one, yet he could never have guessed you were even more than you seemed or that such a fiery, determined vixen lay hiding behind that stunning face.
He licks his lips, tasting the blood still slowly dripping from his nose, and he smiles. You had made him bleed—something only a handful of prey had managed before—and he can’t wait to repay the favor.
Three minutes to go.
Jake has wandered over to the back of the truck and laid out his vast collection of knives on the tailgate as he tries to decide which ones to carry with him on the hunt. To Bradley, they all look the same, but he had made the mistake on more than one occasion of asking Jake the difference between them. Even after several forty-five-minute lectures on tip points, serrations, length, grips, guards, and fuck knows what else, Bradley still didn’t really understand the difference, nor did he care. The only weapon he liked to use was his hands. He needed to physically feel bones breaking beneath him, blood bubbling through his fingers and staining his nails, that last fragile flutter of a pulse before it stilled forever, and he couldn’t get any of that using a gun or a knife–or in Jake’s case–a rope.
That is yet another of Jake’s quirks that Bradley just can’t understand. Why anyone would want to step back and watch their prey take their last breath from afar just baffles him. There is nothing in the world that compares to the high he gets hovering just over his prey and inhaling their last breath into his own lungs—
Oh god, he is so turned on right now.
Bradley takes a few long, slow, deep breaths of the frigid night air as he tries to calm the fire racing through his veins. This lust-filled adrenaline rush can be helpful during the hunt in small doses, but currently, the speed at which all the blood is rushing from his head is leaving him woozy and he needs to be clear-headed for what comes next. Otherwise, he’ll get sloppy and Jake’ll find you before he does and he can’t let that happen. Not this time. Not with you.
It has been a long time, possibly even years since he has wanted a prey this badly and he plans on doing whatever it takes to ensure that his is the last face you will ever see. Even if that means bending the rules of the game and stealing you away from Jake. But the way Bradley sees it, Jake already got a taste of you back in the bar, so now it's his turn.
It had taken everything in him not to leap out of his seat and tear Jake off you as he was forced to watch his best friend shove his tongue down your throat. And what made it worse was how much you had seemed to enjoy it. Bradley had to grip the edge of the bar until his knuckles turned bone white as you slid Jake’s hand up from your hip to rest on your breast. He nearly missed his chance to spike your drink because he couldn’t tear his eyes away from the scene in front of him. But he remembered at the last minute and everything else had gone according to plan.
Two minutes thirty-six seconds to go.
It’s amazing to think how far he and Jake had come since the first time they did this, back when it was an accident.
It had been their senior year in college and they decided to go camping for the long Veteran's Day weekend to try and relieve some of the stress they were under. Jake was being scouted for several professional football teams and since the playoff game was coming up soon, his coach had been riding him extra hard lately. Bradley had just had yet another fight with his godfather about his plans for his future and he was so tired of feeling like he had no control over his life anymore. So a weekend away from it all with nothing but each other and the forest around them seemed like the perfect escape for both of them.
All in all, it would have been a pretty forgettable weekend had a pretty young hiker not stumbled onto their campsite on their second night. Bradley and Jake managed to coax her into staying for a drink or two and one thing led to another—but then Jake took things too far and the girl fled into the woods.
They knew if she made it back to town and reported what happened, Jake would be expelled–if not arrested–due to some past…questionable conduct that had only been overlooked at school because he was a national champion quarterback on his way to a professional career. But an official police arrest wouldn’t be swept under the rug as easily as a campus complaint, so they went after her to try to convince her not to say anything.
The next thing Bradley remembered was kneeling over her body, his hands still around her throat as she stared up at him with wide, unseeing eyes. Jake was huddled beneath a nearby tree, vomit puddled beside him as he rocked back and forth, his eyes locked on the motionless girl. He might have been horrified at first, but Bradley….Bradley had never felt more alive. What's more, once they found a way to hide the body and it became clear no one would ever discover what they had done, that feeling only grew. And Bradley needed more.
It took a lot of convincing to get Jake on board, but once he had a taste of it himself, he too began to crave the thrill of the hunt, the rush of the kill, and it soon became somewhat of an obsession for the pair. A few weeks before graduation, Jake announced he was retiring from football and Bradley told his godfather he was done letting him make decisions about his life and blocked his number.
As soon as school was over, they both found work that allotted them flexibility in their schedules and frequent time off so they could make their hunts a monthly event. Whatever they did didn’t matter; it was all just to serve the next hunt, the next kill. That was all that mattered to them anymore. And soon, the pair figured out the one thing that could make it even better: turning it into a competition.
Over the next decade, they perfected their game. Trial and error taught them the best places to start their hunts, how to select their prey, how to transport them, how to dispose of the bodies once they were done. After a few years on their own, they had found others who shared in their bloodlust and the game had expanded. Now they had a network of seven or so people who would come in and out of the games based on availability, though a single game would never consist of more than four hunters. They couldn’t risk the attention bigger groups might attract. Each hunter brought different skills, different tactics, and different assets to the dynamic, and it was a great way to keep the games fresh and interesting over the years.
But tonight, it is just Bradley and Jake and their little fox hiding in the woods waiting for them to take chase.
One-minute fifty-two seconds.
Bored of just staring into the darkness of the trees waiting for the time to expire, Bradley slowly saunters over to the truck. Jake glances over as he approaches but never stops shifting through the knives.
As he picks up one about the length of his forearm to examine it, he says, “Looks like your nose finally quit bleeding.”
“Yeah, but it still hurts like a motherfucker. I can’t wait to get my hands on that bitch and show her what real pain feels like.” Bradley grins, but then shakes his head as he starts getting lightheaded once more.
Jake chuckles as he puts down his knife to pick up another one twice its size. “Yeah, good luck with that. You’ll have to find her before I do, and I have a good feeling about tonight.” He chuckles, “I mean, my odds of winning have already increased from 25% to 50% with just one phone call.”
“And so have mine,” Bradley reminds him, then sighs. “I wish they would have called sooner and we could have postponed until the road cleared up. It’s weird they waited until we were supposed to start to let us know. Some of the others, maybe, but it’s not like them.”
Jake shrugs, "Apparently they had been trying to call for a while. Honestly, I'm surprised it made it through it all. The signal out here is shit." He pulls out his phone and quickly flashes it so Bradley can see the large warning signal with the words “No Service” below it on the screen before he returns it to his jacket pocket. “And, don’t get me wrong, I love getting to go head-to-head with you again, but it’s kind of a shame it’s just gonna be us tonight. I really wanted to see how they dealt with the snow.”
Bradley scoffs as he checks his watch. “Probably a lot better than you, Texas boy.”
Jake throws down the knife he is holding, the metal clattering loudly as it crashes against the rest of his blades, and he turns to face a startled Bradley. “Make up your mind, man. Earlier you were yelling at me for not thinking it snowed in Texas—which obviously I know, I just meant it’s still warm there this time of year. And now you are ragging on me for not being able to handle the snow because I’m from Texas. You can’t have it both ways!”
“Woah, chill out, Jake,” Bradley says, holding up his hands. “I was only messing with you.”
Jake sighs and scrubs his hand over his face before grumbling, “Yeah, I know. Sorry. I’m just so keyed up to go, I’m a little on edge.”
“Yeah, I get it. So am I.” Bradley chuckles and glances at his watch once again. “But only fifty-seven seconds to go.”
“Can’t we just…you know.” Jake jerks his head in the direction you had fled. “It’s not like we left her her watch so she knows how much time has passed.”
“You know we don’t do that. We have our rules for a reason. And besides,” Bradley laces his fingers together and stretches, cracking his knuckles, “that would take away some of the fun. We want her to get far enough away there is some skill in tracking her down. Otherwise, what’s the point?”
“The point is, I want to have some fun with her. God, I can still taste her lip gloss and feel her sucking on my tongue. Once I find her, I’ll give her something else to suck on.” The knife in Jake’s hand begins to twirl as his eyes glaze over. “I can’t wait to stick one of these in her and listen to all the pretty noises she makes. I wonder how many times it’ll take to make her cry.”
Bradley physically bit his tongue to stop from growling at Jake that you were his. Just listening to him daydreaming about winning is making a different kind of fire course through his veins, this one possessive and dark. But he silently reminds himself that Jake has a tendency of getting carried away and overly cocky as he drags out his teasing with his knives which, more often than not, allows his prey to slip from his fingers. Bradley had stolen quite a few wins from him this way by just waiting and watching, and he has a feeling that might be the case this time too if Jake somehow reaches you first.
And maybe that will be the best outcome. While finding you first guarantees you will be his, Bradley can’t help but think how much more delicious it would be to find you cut up and bleeding, thinking you have escaped one horrible fate just to fall into his deadly embrace. That look of fear and anguish when you realize something far worse than Jake has found you. The knowledge that he won’t let you slip away. The way the fire will dim in your eyes as you realize there is no escape and he is about to—
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Twin grins of excitement spread across Bradley’s and Jake’s faces as the alarm on Bradley’s watch goes off. It’s showtime.
Scooping up his rejected knives, Jake quickly tosses them into the backseat of the truck while Bradley slams the tailgate shut. After one final glance to the front to make sure they aren’t forgetting anything, Jake shuts the door to the truck and locks it before sliding the keys into his jacket pocket next to his phone. Another thing they had learned from experience was to never leave the keys with the vehicle—that had almost been a disaster.
With everything ready, Jake walks over to Bradley and warmly clasps his hand. Giving it a tight squeeze, he smiles. “Ready?”
Bradley squeezes his hand back. “Ready. May the best hunter win.”
“I plan to,” Jake winks at his friend and releases his hand. Walking over to the spot where you had disappeared minutes ago, he bounces lightly on his feet a few times, shaking out his limbs as he does so. With one final grin in Bradley’s direction, he calls into the darkness, “You better run. Hangman’s coming.” And in a flash, he disappears into the trees.
Bradley rolls his eyes and calmly walks over to the edge of the clearing. Jake had charged out following the trail of footprints you had left behind, but Bradley decides to wait. That idea of finding you only after Jake has already had a little fun with you is too tantalizing to pass up, so he’s going to hang back and let Jake think he has won, only to swoop in and steal the prize at the last minute.
After about another ten minutes, Bradley calmly steps into the darkness and begins following Jake’s trail. He can’t wait anymore, and if Jake hasn’t found you by now, then screw it. He’ll just have to settle for being the first one to reach you. He’s not worried about you getting too far away or somehow finding help, not while you are still barefoot and affected by the remains of the drugs in your system. However, Jake’s concerns about you succumbing to the elements is more of a possibility than Bradley wanted to admit earlier. The only thing worse than Jake killing you is the cold killing you, and Bradley can’t let that be the way your story ends.
Suddenly, Bradley hears a loud whoop of joy in the distance to his left. Jake found you. For someone who dubbed him “Rooster” because of his crooning over his prizes, Jake sure liked to announce his finds just as loudly.
Tearing off in the direction of the shout, Bradley ducks and weaves around trees and branches as he tries to locate the two of you. This forest is huge and only having one brief cry to navigate by isn’t easy.
After a while, Bradley thinks he sees something up ahead. At first, it is nearly impossible to identify, just a swaying shape up in one of the trees. However, as he gets a little closer, his heart freezes in his chest and all that fire rushing through his veins is instantly extinguished. Jake hadn’t screwed up this time, and Bradley took too long to find you.
The darkness still shrouds the majority of the hanging shape, but the orange jacket wrapped around it is unmistakable against the trees and snow.

Something cold and wet lands gently on your cheek. Though very light, it’s enough to rouse you from your sleep. As you shift, trying to find a more comfortable position to lie in, your head pounds painfully in time with every beat of your heart and you moan softly. You must have had a few (or more) shots before leaving work last night because you can’t remember getting home…or how you got home…or even closing down the bar. How much did you have to drink?
It’s cold—much colder than it should be—and you vaguely wonder if your heater crapped out again. The last time that happened, it took your landlord almost a week to fix it so you really hope that isn’t the case. You try to reach for your blanket, wanting to just curl up in a warm cocoon to sleep off this headache, but your arms seem stuck or tangled together somehow. Could you have fallen asleep in the middle of taking off your shirt again? It has only happened twice but both times were when you were blackout drunk so it wasn’t out of the realm of possibilities…
Reluctantly, you force your eyes open so you can figure out what stupidity you have gotten yourself into this time–only to freeze as your vision comes into focus.
You had expected to see your bedroom ceiling or even possibly the ceiling of the bar’s break room above you, but instead, you open your eyes to see a man leering down at you, his face twisted into a sort of predatory grin.
Though the gleam in his eye is giving you the creeps, you try to remain calm even as your heart begins pounding in your chest. There could be a thousand perfectly innocent reasons this man is here looming over you like this and it’s best to not jump to conclusions until you know what’s going on. Besides, there is something vaguely familiar about this burly brunet. You know you have seen him somewhere before, though your groggy mind can’t quite place him. However, as soon as a second man (this one blond) steps into view, it all comes rushing back—these two had been at the bar earlier.
You hadn’t interacted with the first man very much, just took his order, poured him his drink, and topped it off once or twice when he got low. However, it hadn’t escaped your attention that he never took his eyes off of you the entire time you chatted with his buddy. And while the brunet had kept his distance, this blond had bent over backward trying to capture every ounce of your attention all night long. You had been bartending long enough to know exactly what kind of guy he was and what he was angling for, but you had to admit, those mesmerizing green eyes and the way that cocky smile curled around the toothpick he was chewing on all night did make you a little weak in the knees.
However, all of that quickly flies from your mind as your eyes settle on the large hunting knife the blond is currently spinning in his hands as he licks his lips, grinning at you.
Something is wrong. Very wrong. Get out now! A wave of terror clears the remaining fog in your mind as all of your instincts scream at you to flee. But as you try to scramble up off your back, you finally notice the thick rope wrapped around your wrists and another around your ankles. And to make matters worse, you seem to be lying in a small metal box of some sort. Your body has been crammed and twisted at a weird angle in order to fit, and the way it resembles a coffin makes a fresh chill run up your spine.
As you release a shuddering gasp, you realize that though restrained, your mouth has been left uncovered. Instantly, you begin screaming as loud as you can, alternating between “help” and just a wordless high-pitched shriek as you thrash around within the box. Pain shoots through you as your knees collide with the sides of the box and you hit one of your funny bones, but you ignore it and just keep screaming.
After a moment, you catch sight of your kidnappers’ faces and your heart sinks. They are expecting this. And what’s worse, based on their sadistic smirks, they are enjoying this. Which means they’re not concerned about anyone hearing you, no matter how much noise you make.
Though terrified by this realization, you force yourself to fall silent and lie still, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of watching you continue to beg for help.
Seemingly satisfied you are done with your freak-out, the brunet pulls himself up the side of the box until he looms over you, his broad frame filling your entire field of vision. His gaze travels down your prone form, lingering on your ass, breasts, and lips before he finally locks eyes with you. His lips curl into a sickening grin as he says, “Well, hello there, sweetheart. Ready to have some fun?”
Without waiting for an answer, he looks at the blond and jerks his head in your direction. Suddenly, everything around you begins to shake as you hear a metallic thud followed by the loud thumping of boots, and the blond appears towering next to you. He gives you a wink and a small click of his tongue before his hands slide under your shoulders and he lifts you up. As he does so, the brunet grabs your feet and you are roughly hauled out of the container.
As they lift you out, whatever insolation or protection the box had been providing you disappears and you are hit with the full chill of the late winter’s night air, causing you to instantly start shivering. For the first time, in the light of the electric lanterns the men had placed around the area, you get a good look at yourself and realize that while the men are dressed in heavy jackets layered over the flannel shirts they had on at the bar, you have been stripped down to your underwear and the thin tank top you were wearing that night under your uniform. At least you had opted for your boyshorts tonight instead of your thong, but you still shiver once more—and this time, it has nothing to do with the cold.
There is no telling what these men did to you while you were unconscious. Obviously, you must have been manhandled to some degree if they undressed you, tied you up, and stuffed you into a box, but was that as far as they went? Or did they have a different kind of fun with you while you had no way of fighting back or saying no? Tears sting the corners of your eyes as a hundred different scenarios play out in your head, and you hope it just appears like your eyes are watering from the cold. You would hate for these two to think they have broken you already.
As they stand you up on the snow-covered ground, your bare feet sink in the soft powder almost up to the top of your ankles. You gasp as you try to bounce from one foot to the other in an attempt to provide your poor feet any relief from the cold, but the rope around your ankles causes you to almost topple over. The only thing that keeps you from crashing into the snow is the brunet who reaches out to steady you. Silently, he bends down and unties the rope, though once he’s done, he walks away without touching the one still wrapped around your wrists.
Now able to bounce more steadily as you try to keep your feet from going completely numb, you begin to take in your surroundings. Glancing over your shoulder, you see a big, black, lifted pickup truck with an open metal toolbox in the bed—which explains why you were so cramped in the box. Looking past the truck, all you can see is rows and rows of trees. They seem to go on forever until disappearing into the void of darkness just beyond the glow from the lanterns. No wonder these men hadn’t worried about your screaming. There are enough woods outside of town that you could currently be ten or fifteen miles from anyone who could help you.
There’s no one but you and the two men who brought you here.
You don’t know what their plan for you is, but you decide the best course of action is to just be as agreeable as possible until the situation changes. So, forcing yourself to give them a lighthearted chuckle even as another shiver shakes your scantily clad body, you try to make your voice as positive as you can. “Hey guys, I don’t know what’s going on here, but if this is your idea of a joke, I don’t find it very funny. So why don’t you just untie me and we can all head back to town.”
“Oh, this is no joke—it’s a game. And you are the missing piece we were looking for,” the brunet says and your forced smile slowly fades. “What do you remember about tonight?”
Still willing to go along with them for now, you close your eyes and try to search through the cloud of fog and fear that is filling your mind. “I…I went to work like usual. Then you two came in an hour or two into my shift.” You nod at the brunet. “You were drinking whiskey, neat.” You nod towards the blond. “And you were having old fashioneds. You sat at the bar for a few hours talking to me in between customers. Yo-you mentioned you were waiting for a couple of friends to make it to town, but they never showed up. Then…” Your memories get fuzzier the later in the night you try to remember. “Then, you left after I announced last calls. You said…you said you’d be seeing me around…”
The two men exchange excited glances as the brunet nods. “You remember more than most….good. It’s more fun when they remember.”
The blond takes a few steps closer to you and reaches out to slowly drag his finger across your lips. “I wonder if you also remember the taste of my tongue in your mouth.”
You flinch away from his touch, diverting your eyes as you feel your stomach threatening to heave. Yes, you remember that too. Against all of your self-made rules and instincts, you had allowed yourself to be charmed by one of your soon-to-be-kidnappers towards the end of the night.
He had bet you a kiss that he could hit the bulls-eye on the dartboard without looking and you had taken him up on his offer, never imagining he could actually do it. But when he threw the dart behind him, his eyes locked firmly with yours as he did so, and it hit the dead center of the board, he had taken his prize. More than that, you had allowed him to get to second base while he shoved his tongue down your throat. In the moment, you enjoyed it—a lot. In fact, you had even considered asking him to meet you out back once you closed down, but now even the slightest brush of his skin against yours makes you sick to your stomach.
As you cower into yourself, the blond’s grin grows even wider, his green eyes sparkling in the lantern light. “Fuck yeah, you do remember. I gotta admit, if you hadn’t downed that shot so quickly, I was going to try to postpone this whole thing once I got that taste of you. Fucking delicious. I can only imagine how sweet the rest of you must taste. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to find out later tonight.”
The feeling of nausea rolling in your stomach intensifies and you can feel the bile burning the back of your throat. Swallowing it back down, you choke out, “The shot? What shot?”
“The other part of our bet. Remember?”
Thinking long and hard, you try to recall what else you had agreed to in your bet. When it suddenly comes to you, you gasp, “I agreed to one drink. You put something in it!”
“You made it so easy,” the brunet says, practically purring with delight. “Usually, I have to really struggle to find just the right moment to slip our little concoction in when the target isn’t looking, but you were so preoccupied with your makeout session, I could have injected it straight into your veins and I doubt you would have noticed. And you made it easier still by choosing Fireball. The flavor covers all traces of the drugs unlike vodka shots so I’m not surprised you didn’t have any clue what had happened. That is the point, after all.”
“To get me out here to play your game?” Both men nod. “What kind of game?”
“The rules are simple,” the brunet explains, the electric lights casting sinister shadows across his face as he stalks closer. “You run, we chase. If you make it out of the woods or stumble across anyone else to help you, you win and we disappear into the night, never to bother you again. But if one of us hunts you down before you escape, that person wins the game and their prize is the right to do whatever they want to you as long as they finish the job before sunrise.”
Their prize is the right to do whatever they want to you as long as they finish the job….
“What the fuck is wrong with you two?” you spit, all attempts at fake pleasantness abandoned as you are hit by the reality of how epically fucked up this situation truly is. Both men seem slightly taken aback by your drastic shift in tone and you straighten up to your full height as you continue. “I am not a fucking toy for you to play with o-or a prize to be won. One of you will win the right to do whatever they want to me? I don’t give you that right and I’m the only one who has a say in that. You can’t do this!”
“I hate to break it to you, but we can and we have and we will again. This is our game, and we’ve never lost.” The brunet stalks forward until his chest is just a few inches from yours and he sneers down at you. “Do you really think we haven’t heard all this before? Please. We’ve been playing this game once a month for over a decade. ‘Oh, please let me go. I have kids who need me.’ ‘I’ll do anything you want, just don’t kill me!’ ‘If you let me go right now, I promise I won’t tell a soul what happened. No police, I swear.” His voice switches between various high-pitched mocking tones as he imitates their past victims and your heart aches for the hundred or so women who found themselves in this same situation over the years.
Returning to his normal voice, the brunet leans over until you are enveloped by the visible cloud of his breath in the cold air. “No. The moment we chose you, your life was over. You belong to us now and we are the only ones who have a say in what happens to you now. And tonight…tonight we say you are a fox and we are the hounds who intend to chase you down and rip out that beautiful throat of yours. You are the prey and we are the predators; the hunted and the hunters. And the sooner you accept that the better this will be for all of us. Do you understand?”
You understand. You are about to die out here in the darkness of the trees, hunted down like an animal and subjected to God-only-knows-what horrors before you are finally murdered in cold blood. And while they are pretending to give you a way out, you have lost all feeling in your feet long ago, you can barely bend your fingers in the cold, and you are shivering so much you can barely see straight. In other words, you don’t stand a chance.
The brunet continues to look at you for an answer so you slowly nod your head. Satisfied, he straightens up and walks back over to the blond.
But before either of them can say anything, you ask, “Why me?”
The brunet turns around. “What?”
“Why did you pick me?”
“Why not?” the blond grins.
The brunet chuckles softly and shakes his head at his friend. However, he then decides to give you a real answer. “Well, first of all, you’re gorgeous which doesn’t necessarily affect the game but it’s a little of an added incentive to win the prize. Second of all, watching you dart around behind that bar all night, lifting boxes of alcohol, and holding your own against a few unruly customers made us think that you could hold your own out here, at least for a while, which makes things more interesting. And third of all, we could tell you have some fire in you. We like fire. That means you won’t just roll over and give up.”
“Yeah, we do not want a repeat of Des Moines,” the blond groans. “That chick just curled up in a ball crying and wouldn’t even leave the clearing. We finally had to just put her down. It ruined the whole trip.”
“But she’s not going to do that, are you, little fox?” the brunet purrs at you. “No, you’re gonna be one of our fighters. Like our girl outside of Austin. Oh…she was a wiley one.” He traces one finger over the scars littering his face and neck that were partially covered by his scruff. “Fought like a hellcat until the very end, scratching and biting and making sure to leave her mark. But I made her pay for each and every one of these. Just something for you to keep in mind once we start.”
“Oh, damn, I forgot about that.” The blond lets out an impressed whistle. “When I found you two, I didn’t even realize it was at first. I thought you had killed a coyote or a deer or something. And even once I knew, I could barely tell that mess used to be human. You were riding that high for weeks.”
The two men begin talking over each other bringing up their favorite hunts in the past, each one more horrible than the last. Each story you hear adds a new fear of what might happen to you before the end of the night. However, it also adds fuel to the anger building in your belly. How these two men had been getting away with this for so long, after doing this to so many women, was incomprehensible. Surely someone must have noticed over a hundred women disappearing over the past decade and started to investigate. These two didn’t seem like criminal masterminds by any means, so how had they managed to avoid detection for so long?
As you continue to watch them go back and forth with tales of past hunts, you shake your head and softly murmur under your breath, “Who the hell are you two?”
The two men stop reminiscing and turn to face you. You hadn’t meant for them to hear your question, but apparently they had.
“Have we not introduced ourselves? Aw, where are our manners?” the brunet asks, taking a step closer to you. “You can call me ‘Rooster’ and that Casanova over there—” he jerks his head towards the blond “—is ‘Hangman’.”
“Rooster and Hangm– What the fuck kinds of names are those?”
“Well, you see, our boy here—” Hangman comes over to wrap his arm around Rooster’s shoulder and slaps him on the chest “—he’s a crooner. Loves to crow when he catches his prey so everyone knows he won. He’s a bit of a showoff. And me…let’s just say my name’s a bit more self-explanatory.”
With the hand not draped across Rooster’s shoulders, he shifts his arm so his jacket pulls back to reveal a length of rope ending in a noose tucked into his belt. “As much as I love a little foreplay with my knives, it can’t compare to watching someone gasping and struggling for air as they flail wildly three feet off the ground. Then seeing that moment when everything goes still and the light softly dims in their eyes?” He shivers with a small “whoo” of delight. “There’s nothing like it in the world. It’s even better than sex.”
Just when you think these two can’t get any worse, they somehow manage to top themselves. Your voice dripping with disgust, you ask, “Why are you telling me all of this?”
Hangman shrugs. “Because we are killing time until we can start the game and then, in an hour or two, it won’t matter that you know. Plus, it’s nice actually getting to share our accomplishments with someone else for once. That’s the worst downside to having an illegal hobby. You can’t tell anyone about it besides the few people who were there when it happened.”
Suddenly, Hangman’s pocket lights up and the muffled sounds of “Slow Ride” fill the air. Rooster glares at the sheepish blond as he pulls his phone out and glances at the screen. But any contrition he seems to have quickly evaporates and he answers the call as a wide grin splits across his face.
“Hey, you almost here? We’ve got a real spitfire this time. It’s gonna be one hell of a competition.” Hangman listens for a moment then his face falls. “Damn. Yeah, no, I understand.” Glancing up at Rooster, he mouths ‘not gonna make it’ before turning his focus back to the phone.
With a heavy sigh, Rooster looks down at you. “Sorry, little fox. We weren’t lying before. We were supposed to be meeting some friends who wanted to play too. But it looks like it’ll just be the three of us after all.”
That predatory gleam you had seen on his face when you first woke up returns as he leans in until his lips are practically brushing against the curve of your ear. In a soft whisper, he says, “But it wouldn’t have mattered. You’re mine, baby girl. I’ve known from the second I laid eyes on you in that bar that I had to have you. Hangman might get to you first and slice you up a little bit, but at the end of the night, it’s going to be me with my hands around your throat as the light leaves your eyes and you take your final, desperate gasp of air.” He leans back with a moan as his eyes flutter closed and his tongue runs across his lips. “Fuck…I’m so hard just thinking about it.”
You have never felt such deep, burning feelings of disgust or anger like you feel towards Rooster. But using that fire coursing through your veins to give you strength, you clasp your bound hands together and drive them into the side of Rooster’s head. Because his eyes are still closed as he revels in the idea of your murder, he never sees it coming.
Your fists slam into his face and you feel the crunch of his nose behind your force. Both of you topple sideways to the ground but you instantly try to scramble to your feet before he comes to his senses. However, you struggle to use your tied hands to push yourself to your feet in the soft snow and just as you are starting to figure out how to stand, Rooster’s elbow drives into your right temple.
Collapsing like a ton of bricks, the soft snow cushions your fall. Darkness begins closing in until there is just a single circle of light swimming in the center of your vision. Waves and waves of pain are radiating throughout your body and a low moan flows from your lips.
In that small dot of light, you see a blurry Rooster come into view. There is blood flowing from his nose and a hungry rage burning in his eyes. Leaning in close, he spits, “Be glad the game hasn’t started yet. Otherwise, I would be cutting off each of your fingers one by one before shoving them down your throat. But don’t think I’ll forget this once the hunt has begun.”
Ignoring his threats, you press your aching temple deeper into the snow, using the cold powder as a sort of ice pack to ease the pain a little. It is the first time all night you are thankful for the freezing snow surrounding you. However, you can also feel it soaking into your tank top and underwear, and you know that being wet in this environment is just going to make things a hundred times worse. But seeing as there’s nothing you can do about it, you just try to focus on the slight relief the snow is providing your pounding head.
Distantly, you hear Hangman end his call and hesitantly approach where you lay. Rooster spits a wad of bloody saliva onto your cheek before rising and turning towards his friend. “What happened?”
“There was a big snowstorm just east of here and the roads are coated in ice. Even the truck can’t make it through for at least a few more hours. So it looks like it’ll just be us this time.”
“Just like the old days.”
“Just like the old days.” Hangman glances down at you. “Is there something I should know?”
“Nothing I couldn’t handle,” Rooster says as he wipes the blood from under his nose with the back of his hand. “She wanted to start the game early, but I made sure she’ll follow the rules from now on. Isn’t that right, little fox?” He nudges your side with the toe of his boot.
The pain throbbing in your head is still overwhelming despite the slight relief provided by the snow and your vision has yet to clear. However, you lift your head slightly and glare at the man towering over you. With all the viper you can muster, you hiss, “Fuck you.”
Rooster’s face splits into a cruel grin, made even more sinister by the blood still staining his face. “That’s my girl.” Then, turning to Hangman, he says, “Well, if they aren’t coming, I guess we can start. Get her up.”
Hangman walks over and hauls your limp body to a standing position. Though you are still unsteady on your feet, you manage to stay upright. Then to your surprise, Hangman pulls out one of his knives from earlier and cuts the rope binding your hands. Your arms ache from being held in the same position for so long and your wrists are rubbed raw from the rope burns, but it is still a relief to be free once more. You immediately shove your numb hands under your armpits in an attempt to get some feeling back to them, but you can already tell it won’t do much good. The rest of your body is too cold to provide much relief.
Grabbing your elbow, Hangman leads you over to where Rooster is standing next to a pile of supplies in the middle of the clearing. He positions you so you are standing facing Rooster and then he goes to stand next to his friend.
Satisfied everything is set, Rooster says, “It’s time for the game to begin. You have a five-minute head start to get as far away from here as you can. Once your time is up, we start the hunt. The only rules are what I said before: If you find help or civilization before we catch you, then you go free. If one of us finds you before then, the game is over and the winner gets to claim his prize. And your time starts now.” He presses a button on his watch and you hear a soft beep.
Five minutes. That’s potentially all the time you have left in this world. You know you should take off and try to put as much distance between yourself and this place as you can, but if these are your last moments of life, you are going to give these two psychos a piece of your mind before you go.
“You two are so pathetic,” you snarl. “You see yourselves as these great hunters and killers but you’re shooting fish in a barrel and then boasting about your prize. You drug these girls, strip them down, send them off without a way of even trying to protect themselves, and then brag you are mighty warriors when your victims can’t even put up much of a fight. And the only reason you don’t give anyone a real chance is because you know you might actually lose.”
Hangman nervously glances at Rooster as he shifts uncomfortably. Your words have had their intended effect as doubt settles in on him. However, Rooster doesn’t seem the least bit phased. Instead, he smirks at you as his eyes narrow.
“Nice try, but we’re not falling for it. Now, get going while there’s still time on the clock. We want a challenging game but don’t think for one second we won’t kill you right here if you haven’t moved when the timer goes off. We’ve done it before.”
“At least give me my jacket or shoes or pants or something! I’m gonna get frostbite or hypothermia before either of you can catch me, and then where does that leave your game?”
“What did I just tell you? We’re. Not. Falling. For. It,” Rooster growls.
“I don’t know, maybe she’s right.” Rooster turns his glare to Hangman who shrinks back but continues speaking. “I mean, we’ve never done this in the snow or the cold so we might need to adjust slightly. Plus, her lips are already starting to turn blue and she’s shivering really hard. I don’t want this to turn into another environmental death like last time when the girl fell off the cliff or that time in Reno where the girl got bit by the rattlesnake. If she’s gonna die, one of us should get to be the one who does it, not the cold.”
Rooster sighs as he considers this, his hand scrubbing across the short scruff along his jaw. He turns back to stare at the truck for a long time before he finally nods. “Fine. She can have her jacket back. But that’s all.”
Relief floods through you at the thought of any kind of warmth, but your smile fades as Hangman jogs over to the truck and pulls your jacket out of the back seat. You had forgotten which one you wore to work today.
While it did have the added benefit of being one of the warmer jackets you owned—a thick hooded jacket with fuzzy sherpa lining that falls to the top of your knees and has several pockets to warm your hands in—it was also a light burnt-orange color that will stand out like a beacon amongst both the pure white snow and darkness of the night. Rooster smirks at you and you have a feeling that he didn’t forget about the color. The olive branch he had extended was in fact covered in thorns.
Yet, as soon as Hangman tosses you the jacket, you quickly pull it on, zip it up, flip the hood up over your head, and jam your fists into your pockets. You are still completely bare from your knees down, but at least the coverage from the snow and the warmth you can already feel melting the chill in your upper half is a vast improvement. You just wish you had been given your boots back as well. Your feet have been completely numb from almost the minute they sunk into the deep snow, and the idea of trying to run miles and miles like this terrifies you.
But what choice do you have?
Glancing at his watch, Rooster says, “You now have…three minutes forty-eight seconds. Time is ticking.”
There’s no point in wasting any more of the time you have left, so you pick a direction and start walking towards the wall of trees at the edge of the clearing.
When you pass him, Hangman winks at you, runs his tongue over his lips, and whispers, “I’ll be seeing you real soon.”
At this point, you aren’t really sure which man you are more frightened of tracking you down. But then your mind flashes back to the pure pleasure on Rooster’s face as he talked about watching the light leave your eyes, and you know who you would rather have find you.
As soon as you leave the clearing, you take off into the dark woods as fast as your frozen feet will allow.

Chapter 2 | Masterlist
Rooster stayed near Iris as much as he could. He quickly realized that no one else knew she was blind and he wasn’t going to out her. Any time she needed anything he got it for her, if she had to get up he took her arm in his. The team watched him in confusion. Rooster didn’t usually treat girls he hardly knew like this. Phoenix, Bob and Payback watched closely as Iris and Rooster chatted away at the other end of the table. “I think they’ve been dating for a while.” Payback said as he leaned in closer to Bob and Phoenix. “I don’t think so. I think maybe they’ve been friends for a while.” Bob replied and Natsha turned to face them both. “I thought they only met the night he took her home?” She asked and Payback shook his head. “Nah, he never specified that that was when they met.” He said and Phoenix nodded. “I think they’re just captivated by each other.” They all jumped slightly at Mav’s voice behind them. “You don’t have to speculate guys. It’s obvious they’re into each other.” He said and they all looked back at them just as Iris laughed loudly at one of Bradley’s jokes.
“Food’s ready! Bradshaw, come help me!” Jake called out as he slapped Bradley’s shoulder. “I’ll be right back.” He said before getting up and following Hangman inside. “Hey, you good?” Mandi asked and Iris nodded. “I’m doing great.” She said as she finished her second drink. Mandi could tell she was at least tipsy because of the tint on her cheeks and the goofy smile she had on. “You need to sit by Jake when we eat because Bradley’s gonna sit here.” Mandi held her hands up in defense. “I won’t get in the way.” She said and Iris giggled. Iris heard the door open and she faced Mandi. “Shoo shoo.” Iris said and Mandi chuckled before getting up and taking the seat next to where Jake will sit. Jake and Bradley set the food around the table before sitting down. Everyone started digging in as Iris turned to Bradley. “Could you…” She trailed off, now wishing she asked Mandi to stay so she wouldn’t have to ask him. “Could you help me?” Iris asked and he looked at her a little confused. “With what?” He asked as he placed some of the potato salad on his plate. “I can’t see what any of the food is.” She shyly admitted. She felt like a child, needing someone to make her food for her. “Oh.” He said, realizing what she was asking. “Well there’s potato salad, pork barbecue, baked beans, rolls and some salad.” He said as he looked back at her. “Can you grab me a little bit of everything?” She asked and he smiled down at her before nodding. “Of course.” Rooster filled up his plate before setting it in front of her. He didn’t mind one bit that she needed his help. He kind of liked it actually, because when he moved her plate and set his in front of her she gave him the biggest smile.
“Thank you.” She said as she put her napkin in her lap. “You’re welcome.” He said and watched as she started eating. He was amazed at how normal she could seem. Of course she was normal, but she hid the fact she was blind so well. It was amazing that he was only one of two people besides her at this table who knew she was blind. Everyone seemed to want to talk to Iris while they ate and she was more than happy to talk to them. She works so much and in order to go out, someone has to take her, it can be hard getting out and meeting new people. So she was actually grateful Mandi brought her. Once the food was eaten and the leftovers were put away, Bradley smiled as he sat back down next to her, sliding a small plate in front of her. Iris immediately could smell the sweet in front of her. “What is this?” Iris asked as she turned to Rooster. “Cherry pie. Penny made it.” He said, sliding a fork towards her as well. “I love cherry pie.” She said, taking a bite. Iris moaned at the taste, not too sweet and not too bitter. “It kind of tastes like my moms.” She said, smiling at him. “She makes cherry pie?” He asked and she nodded. “She does every fourth of July. It’s about the one time of year I can squeeze one out of her.” She said and Rooster chuckled. “So, how about that number?” He asked and she smiled, taking another bite. “You can have my number after I finish this pie and go to the bathroom.” She said and he groaned. “You’re gonna make me wait?” He asked and she giggled. “Patience Bradley.” She said as she sat back in her chair, eating the pie and Bradley just propped his chin in his hand and watched her with a smile.
Once she finished the pie she nodded Mandi over. Mandi smiled at Rooster, giving him a small wave as she bent down next to Iris. “What’s up?” She asked. “Can you help me to the bathroom? I’ve been trying to hold it but I’m gonna have to break the seal.” Mandi nodded, taking her hand as they stood. “I’ll be right back.” Iris said to Rooster as Mandi led her inside and down the hallway before allowing her into the bathroom. Mandi leaned against the wall as she waited on Iris. She heard voices and peeked down the hall to see Jake and Bradley walk in through the back door. Bradley walked into the kitchen and Jake stood on the other end of the hallway. “What are you doing?” He asked, smiling at her and leaning on the wall. She walked over, smiling at him and as she got close he grabbed her by the waist. “I’m just waiting on Iris.” She said and he furrowed his brows at her. “Is she okay?” He asked, glancing at the bathroom door. Mandi nodded, squeezing herself closer to him. “She is. She just had to go to the bathroom.” She said and Jake scoffed and rolled his eyes. “Really? She’s a grown woman and she needed you to walk her to the bathroom?” He asked and Mandi’s eyes widened. “Sh!” Mandi said, putting her finger to her lips.
“What? If she can’t handle hearing the truth then she needs to grow up. She’s a grown woman in her late twenties. She needs to learn that you can’t spend your life taking care of her and you need to tell her that she’s just going to have to be alone sometimes.” Jake said and it caught Rooster’s attention. He walked out of the kitchen to see Jake pull himself away from Mandi. While Rooster listened in, so did Iris. She could hear everything from the inside of the bathroom door. She dried her hands off after washing them and listened closely. Iris could feel a burning in her chest. It was pure rage, a rage she hadn’t felt since she went blind. When she lost her sight, all she felt was anger, anger at the universe or some higher power for ripping it away. She laid her hand on the doorknob, taking a deep breath and trying to calm herself. But Jake’s next words set her off. “How is our relationship supposed to go anywhere if she’s clinging to you?” With that she flung the door open. “What?” Mandi sighed when she heard Iris’ voice. “What the hell are you talking about?” Iris asked, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m talking about how you can’t seem to grow up and stop depending on Mandi for everything.” He said and Iris’ eyebrows shot up. “Me depending on her?” Iris asked, cautiously stepping closer. “Where the hell did you get the idea that I depend on her?” Anger was boiling in Iris and Bradley watched on carefully. He didn’t like where this was going and Iris looked like she could really hurt someone with how angry she was. Bradley really felt for Iris. She seemed so vulnerable that night. But now she was the total opposite. She was a spitfire and something about it made Rooster smile at the worried look on Mandi’s face. “I know from all the shit she’s told me.” He said and Iris scoffed. “And what has she told you?”
“Iris-” “No. I want to hear what you’ve told him.” Jake rolled his eyes at her words. “She’s told me everything, and since she won’t tell you I will. You need to grow up and stop clinging to her. I mean you quite literally cling to her. Every time you get up you have to be holding on to her in some way!” Bradley stood back as long as he could but those words had an anger rising in him that he hadn’t felt in a long time. “So that’s what you told him. You told him I was just a needy and clingy roommate instead of the truth?” Mandi didn’t like being put on the spot, especially when it puts two of her relationships in jeopardy. “I didn’t even want to come here! She asked you if I could just so she could make up for leaving me stranded at the fucking bar.” Jake scoffed. “And you could’ve gotten an uber home instead of bothering Rooster for a ride.” That was it. Those were the words that set Rooster off and he couldn’t leave Iris to defend herself alone anymore. “She didn’t ask. I offered and I agree with Iris, it was really shitty of you to leave her there!” Bradley said as he walked over. “You should’ve seen how distressed she was when she realized you left without her.” He said. “And she could’ve asked for the keys from Mandi and drove herself home.” Jake said, defending Mandi. “I can’t drive.” Iris said and Jake wasn’t surprised. “Of course, another thing you depend on her for.” He said and Mandi looked at Rooster, worried he was about to seriously hurt Jake with how angry he looked. “She can’t drive because she’s fucking blind!” Rooster shouted at Jake, making Mandi flinch.
Jake turned to Iris, brows furrowed. “Wait, you're blind?” He asked and she nodded. “Yeah, I’m totally blind.” She said and guilt settled in Jake’s stomach before he turned to Mandi. “You lied to me?” He asked and Mandi wouldn’t meet his eye. She realized she had been caught in her lie and she had no way to backpedal. “You fucking lied to me.” He stated and she sighed. “Yes, I did.” She said firmly. “Why?” Iris asked and Mandi huffed, glaring at her. “You’re really asking me why?” Iris held her arms out, nodding. “That’s what I said isn’t it? Or are you deaf?” Mandi scoffed. “You know exactly why I did this.” She said and Iris shook her head. “No, obviously I don’t. So go ahead, tell me. You have no problem making up lies about me, so you should be able to say the truth to my face.” Iris said and Rooster smiled at her. She definitely had a fiery side to her, and he loved it. “I’m tired of not having my own boyfriends!” Iris furrowed her brows, confused as to what she meant. Mandi’s face was red and she was practically shaking with anger. Jake looked at Rooster, confusion on his face, but Rooster’s eyes went between Mandi and Iris in disbelief. “I-I would never make a move on anyone you date. I have more class than that and I would never do that to you!” Iris said and Mandi scoffed. “Please, you could never pull the men I date.” Iris’ eyebrows shot up and Rooster looked offended as well. He knew Iris could have any man she wanted.
“I know you never tried to hit on them. But because they always felt bad for you, you wound up on our dates!” Mandi said, throwing her hands out. “They always felt bad about you staying home! So they just had to invite you!” Iris’ jaw dropped. She could not believe what she was hearing. “So instead of talking to me and telling whoever you’re dating that you want it to just be you two, you decided making up a lie about me was better? What the hell is wrong with you?” Mandi reeled back, shocked Iris spoke to her like she did. “What’s wrong with me?! There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be alone with my boyfriend! But poor helpless Iris just can’t be alone!” Mandi snapped and the anger rose in Iris again. “Poor helpless Iris?!” There was something sharp in her tone and it even scared Bradley. “I have never once in my life been helpless and I never asked to fucking go with you. It was always an invite. If you had a problem with that maybe you should’ve been a grown ass woman and said something about it!” Iris snapped. “Never been helpless? When we first moved you depended on me so much! You wouldn’t have made it without me! You need me!” Mandi said, leaning closer to Iris. But all of a sudden it was like Iris could see and she rushed up to Mandi, standing toe to toe with the tall woman. “I DON’T FUCKING NEED YOU!” Iris yelled at Mandi. “I have never needed anyone and I don’t need you now!” Iris was raging. “The only reason I needed your help was because I was learning to navigate the house! Once I figured it out I barely needed your help for anything!”
“Who has to make you dinner?” She asked and Iris’ face turned red. Rooster wanted to step in, but he didn’t want to step on Iris’ toes. “I’m not some helpless child, Mandi! I can feed myself and take care of myself! If anything, you depend on me!” Iris retorted and Mandi laughed. “I do not!” She said. “You live in my house! Let’s see how helpless you are when you have nowhere to live!” Mandi was reeling. “You can’t kick me out! I pay rent!” She said and Iris smirked. “The house is in my name and there’s no rental agreement Mandi.” She said and Mandi started panicking. She couldn’t afford to live on her own and she couldn’t find another roommate this fast either. “But I’ll be nice and give you a proper thirty days to pack your shit and get out.” Iris said. Even with how awful Mandi is, she couldn’t be downright cruel to her. “Don’t bother. I’ll be out by morning.” Mandi said before turning and storming out to her car. Iris heard her storm away and it was like everything washed over her. She took a deep breath, standing still as she rested her head in her hand. “Iris? Are you okay?” Rooster asked, stepping closer. She took a deep breath, lifting her head. “Yeah, I’m fine. I just… I think I’m gonna go home.” She said.
“Mandi will be there.” Jake said, catching Iris off guard. “You’re more than welcome to stay here for a while.” He said and Iris shook her head. “No, I think I’m just gonna go home.” Iris wanted to apologize for causing problems but she was also mad that Jake just listened to Mandi instead of getting to know her himself. She stepped past Jake who just looked confused. Before he could look at Rooster, Rooster had already taken off after Iris. “Iris.” He called, causing her to stop at the end of the hallway. “Iris, hey, stop for a minute.” Bradley came around in front of her but stopped when he saw a tear slip out from under her sunglasses. She pulled her sunglasses off her face and sniffled. Bradley felt a pang in his chest. The sadness was obvious on her features and he just wanted to hold her and let her cry on his chest. He leaned to the bookshelf in the living room, grabbing a tissue from the box and holding it out to Iris. “Hey, come on.” He said, gently taking her hand and setting the tissue in it. “Pretty girls don’t cry.” He said and she sniffled. “You think I’m pretty?” Iris asked, trying to distract herself. “Of course I do.” He said. “Look, please stay. Mandi will go back to your place and I think you two being together right now isn’t a good idea.” He said and Iris sighed. “I’ll just call my friend Emily. She said she could pick me up if this happened again. I’ll be with her for a while.” She said, sliding the sunglasses back on her face. Rooster deflated, hope dying in his chest. “Oh, okay. That-that’s cool. I was kinda hoping you’d stick around but I get it if you want to leave.” He said and Iris furrowed her brows. “You want me to stay?” She asked and he nodded. “Yeah. But I get it if you don’t. I’ll wait with you till she gets here though.” He said and Iris sighed, wadding the tissue in her hands. “It’s not that I really want to leave, but Mandi was my ride and I don’t want to call Emily too late.” She said and Rooster practically lit up. “I’ll take you home later, if you’re okay with that. I don’t mind at all.”
Iris thought back to what Emily told her. She didn’t know this guy. Just his nickname. But that was also three hours ago. Now she knows that his real name is Bradley Bradshaw, he’s a fighter pilot in the Navy, and he's thirty-five. She knew him and he knew her. He wasn't a stranger anymore. So Emily couldn't lecture her. "Okay I'll stay. But only if you're okay with taking me home.” The way she smiled at Rooster was like she could see his face light up at her response. "I'm totally okay.
with it." He said as Iris held her hand out towards him. He quickly took it, placing her hand on his arm. "Jake?" She called out, not sure if he was still in the hallway. "Yeah?" He sounded sad and she felt bad. "I do want to apologize for causing drama today. That wasn't my intention.” Jake just nodded. "It wasn't your fault." With that Rooster led Iris back outside. Hours went by and the sun was going down. Rooster and Iris were seated next to each other talking to Bob and Phoenix. Iris was happily talking away with the two across from her and Rooster sat back in his chair, his arm tossed over the back of her chair. He smiled and listened to her carry on with his friends "It's getting dark out here. How can you still see with those sunglasses Iris?" Bob asked Iris' smile grew wide as she shrugged "Is it? I couldn't tell."
Bob and Phoenix looked at each other with a single raised brow each. "How could you not tell? Are you blind or something!" Phoenix joked and Iris’ grin spread ear to ear. "I am actually." Phoenix spit her drink out, narrowly avoiding Bradley who was about to fall out of his seat laughing. "Are you really?" Bob asked and Iris nodded. "Iris I-I am so sorry!"She just giggled at Phoenix's words. "It's okay. No reason to apologize It's not like you knew." Phoenix's face was tinged red under the porch lights. "How long have you been blind?” Bob asked. “Twelve years.” Everyone was surprised. “So you weren't born blind?” She shook her head. “No. I know what the world looks like.” Everyone chuckled at her words.

Chapter 3
Last night had been a whirlwind. In celebration for joining in a new college, my friends had demanded a party in the club. I had no idea what to do and the only person I could ask for help without being shy was my best friend, Elani. I rushed into her room, slamming the door open.
“What the fuck am supposed to do? I don’t know which club would be good, which one would be enjoyable! I’ve never even gotten drunk and done anything fun!” I was almost about to cry by now thinking of all the pressure and the feeling of being so boring in my friend group.
“Aditi, first of all deep breaths. Which bitch cries over this?! Get yourself together you mother fucker!” She says good naturedly. Even tough I’m a typical INFP personality and she’s a complete INTP, we gel well together just because she understands that there are days when I need tough love and days when I just need comforting.
“Ok ok, I’m not crying. Now give me my solution!”
“Let’s go to the Hard Deck! I’ve heard it has good music, and it has amazing eye candy!”
“But isn’t it owned by a mafia gang, the Daggers?”
“So, you aren’t all innocent” I could see her smirk as she tried to make me blush.
“Ugh, I know the happenings in the city, even if I am new to it! And besides won’t it be dangerous for our first time?” Her smirking had worked and I had to hide my face in her blanket just to feel ok. She laughed seeing my state.
“It’s ok. I’m sure we’ll be perfectly fine. Besides it has to be a big celebration! You are now going to college!”
“You didn’t even do something that big when you started! Why should I then?!”
“I’ll celebrate with you! You’re just 21! Learn to live and enjoy, my love!”
“My parents will kill me if they ever found out I am going to a club let alone drink or get drunk!”
“No one has to tell them. Tell them not to call you because we are going to explore the city. I think they’ll be ok with that.”
“What would I ever do with you” I hugged her sighing at the amazing friend I had ended up getting in her.
I was lost in drinking and dancing when Elani pulled me closer to scream in my ears, “I need to go to the washroom!” She was barely audible over the raging music.
“Alright let’s go, I told her.” As we walked to the washroom, drink in hand, I bumped into a large man.
I spilled my drink all over his white shirt. Just by his smell I could tell he was rich. As I glanced up, the anger melted from his face. His softened. He asked me questions like my name and where I was staying. He asked me to pay for his shirt by sleeping with him. He was attractive, I couldn’t deny that. But something came over me as I instantly yet calmly refused. I could tell that he was extremely dangerous and going home with him tonight would not only disappoint my parents but also be unsafe. I declined by trying to appear as if I wanted to spend more time with him before that. Little did I know that would be the wrong move. I had hoped to make him feel as if I wasn’t the kind of girl who did such things and that would make him stop pursuing me but my strategy had failed miserably. He wanted to go to dinner with me tomorrow. I wanted to decline right then and there but I wasn’t sure how to do that without making me a target of his rage so I simply accepted his proposal.
Elani immediately pulled me aside as soon as he left, “Why did you say no?! He was perfectly sexy! You could have had a one-night stand!”
“I didn’t feel comfortable”, I mumbled as she pulled me into the washroom.
“It’s ok. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t push you like that.” She said as she embraced me. I gave her a small smile as we pulled away.
The ride home was quiet. We had gotten into a taxi and headed to our dorm and I had crashed onto the bed. I dreamt of him, the enigmatic stranger. I leaned up as he cupped my cheek. His palm travelled to my neck as he stroked my neck with his callused fingers. I whimpered in response.
He whispered into my ear as he pushed my dark hair aside, “I want you so badly, beautiful. C’mere.” He softly kissed my lips and I gasped at the sensation. He took that opportunity to slip his tongue into my mouth, claiming it.
“You’re mine, all mine, angel.” He mumbled against my lips as he smiled. He lightly trailed his wet kisses to my pulse point. He began to suck and lick it.
I hummed in response as I said, “No hickeys” My voice came out broken and almost whispered.
The scene expanded as we were now sitting on my bed. He straddled me, making me sit on his lap.
“I need you”, he whispered as he gazed into my doe like eyes, his hazel in contrast to my dark brown ones.
I nodded like a shy little child in his arms. He began to kiss my neck once again as his kisses trailed down to my breasts. He pulled my nightdress lower to get more access. I moaned in pleasure.
“You like that, huh, baby girl?”
I nodded lightly in response. My back was arching by now, needing him closer, needing him more.
He removed my dress over the top of my head as he glanced at my body.
“Not now, free me completely first” I said adamantly.
He smirked as he undid my bra and I removed my underwear. He tried to look at my body but I shut the lights. He switched them on again, with a puzzled expression on his face. I instantly wrapped my arms around my body, trying to cover every inch of it.
“What are you doing, baby girl?”, he asked quizzically.
I sighed, “I know you’ve seen prettier girls than this naked in your bed, and I’m not very pretty. So, I don’t want to feel disgusted when you look at me.”
“Move your hands”, he said gruffly. I felt scared as I looked into his eyes. They had darkened over and there was anger in them. I quietly did as I was told, wincing as I moved my hands. I had stretch marks all over my body, my boobs were huge and I hated that about myself. But what I hated even more was my stomach, a small paunch hung off my body. My upper arms were flabby and my thighs were too thick. I hated almost everything about my body, except my hair and face- they were my only source of confidence. I felt even more disgusting under his scrutinizing gaze. It’s as if I was under a microscope as he took in every inch of my skin.
He pulled me into his arms as he whispered into my ears, with a harsh voice, “You are absolutely not pretty, you are anything but pretty.” I wanted to cry as he said that. It felt like my heart had broken into a million pieces.
He continued, as tenderly as possible, “You are beautiful. So fucking gorgeous. I can’t keep my hands off of you, princess.” I whimpered as he bit my ear lobe, sucking it and I moaned his name. Although I didn’t know it yet, I felt like it would be something that would easily fall off my lips and have tons of nicknames hidden in it.
He continued again, in a serious tone, “Now you will be punished. How dare you say something so horrible and wrong about my baby girl?!” I blushed at his statement and buried my head in to his shoulder. He held my chin and made me look in to his eyes.
“Look at me baby girl, don’t look away”, he commanded. I nodded for a yes as he kissed my lips. He began to trail his kisses to my breasts. As he sucked them and rolled the tips in his warm fingers, I moaned his name.
“Good girl”, he growled into my breast. I smiled as he said that.
“You like it when I say that, huh?”, he smirked. I nodded enthusiastically. He laughed seeing me that happy.
He kissed my lips grinning a toothy grin, “God, you’re gorgeous! I just can’t stop kissing your lips!” I giggled in response.
He then moved to fingering me. He kept glancing at me as he did that. He loved it when I arched my back and he left kisses on my stomach. I moved my hands to his hair, gently running my fingers through his auburn curls. I moaned telling him how near I was.
“C’mere”, he mumbled as he entered me. He buried his head in my neck and his hands, which were beside my neck, grabbed the sheets, almost ripping them apart.
“God, you feel so good”, he breathily moaned. I could just moan his name, saying random gibberish, as much as I could muster. When the release came, it was absolutely amazing, or so I imagined. I had never had been in a relationship before let alone have sex so I only knew that the feeling was good, not how it actually felt. I imagined how good his cum would feel, wet and cold inside of me. Then as he removed himself from indie of me, he would cuddle me in his huge frame and how warm his body would be after the sex. I would bury my head into his chest and take in his manly scent as I would fall asleep.
I woke up immediately, cursing myself for enjoying that dream so much. Elani was awake, scrolling through her phone, blushing as she read the words on it.
“You enjoying that sexy time in your head?”, I asked smirking at her.
“You were supposed to be asleep!”, she said shocked and making herself proper.
“Guess who I just dreamt about?”
“Sexy time with a sexy stranger that you had sex with just by looking at his sexy-ness?”, she questioned, smirking.
“It feels like you like him more than I do?”
“Of course not, I would just support you if you went back to that bar right now and went home with him.”
I rolled my eyes and unlocked my phone to do some mindless scrolling on it. I noted the time- 10 am, as I saw the text message I had received.
Good morning, beautiful. Hope you slept well and dreamt of me. Just a reminder, we have a dinner date @7 pm today. I’ll send you a dress and pick you up. Don’t be late. Love, Bradley.

The Hard Deck was a place where you could find all kinds of people. Pilots and civilians dancing around each other in the crowd attempting to keep their drinks upright. Penny loved her bar and she loved seeing fresh faces as well "What can I get you ladies?" She asked as she wiped the bar down. "I'll take a water, please?" The girl who crawled into the bar stool smiled at her and she returned it. She took notice how her tall blonde friend held her arm. "I'll take a tequila shot and a tequila sunrise." Penny nodded and turned to make the drinks. "You're driving." Mandi looked down at her friend in the barstool. "Oh calm down. Iris I'll be fine." That's what she said last time and Iris had to call an uber and fight her to get in it. "Here you are girls." Mandi slid the water to Iris until it barely bumped her hand. Iris drank smoothly as Mandi wandered off into the crowd. "What time do you wanna go home?" Iris asked to nobody. Iris didn't really want to be here. But Mandi mentioned how long it's been since they went out together and she felt bad and agreed. The only problem was, to Mandi, her nine o'clock is midnight. “Why don't you get up and mingle?" Penny asked. Iris turned to face her and Penny took notice of how the young woman's eyes never met hers.
"Oh, I'm fine here." Iris said. Mandi stood against the wall staring out at the sea of officers, as if she was a predator searching for her next prey. She clocked a tall blonde with a million dollar smile with a bunch of other officers at a pool table. She stared at him and as if he sensed her, he met her eye and she gave him a dazzling smile of her own, casting her eyes down to her drink feigning shyness. Jake watched her closely and as soon as her drink was gone, he made his move. He walked ever, head held high, shoulders back and she leaned back against the wall. "Hi," he greeted. Southern accent prominent. "Hi Cowboy." He placed his hand on the wall next to her head. "What's a pretty thing like you doing here all alone?" She bit her lip as she stirred her drink. "Just came out with my roommate." He raised a brow. "Doesn't explain why you're alone." She giggled at him, leaning closer. "I just had to step away from my roommate. She's what you could call co-dependent." He hummed. "So she's annoying." He deadpanned and Mandi shrugged. "Sometimes." He reached out taking her glass from her. "Let me buy you a drink?" She raised a brow at him. "I don't even know your name sailor." She saw his name badge. but she didn't have to let him know that. "Lieutenant Jake Seresin ma'am, and I'm an aviator." She raised her brows as he took her hand and tucked it in his elbows. "Wow, so you fly those really fast jets?" Mandi knew stroking his ego would land him right in the palm of her hand. "Yes. Yes I do."
Penny raised a brow as the duo approached the bar. "Hello Penny dear.” She just smiled at him. "Bagman." She replied. Normally the name would bother him, but he had a gut feeling he knew how his evening would end, so he was unbothered. "Another drink for the lady." She nodded and took the glass. "Another water, dear?" She asked as she passed Iris. "Oh, no thank you." Anymore and she'd have to get up to go to the bathroom, and attempting to navigate the crowd was a task she wasn't up for. Mandi looked over at her roommate, Iris looked bored out of her mind, drawing shapes in the water that pooled on the bar top. Mandi thought she should probably check in with her, but she didn't want to step away from Jake. "Here you go.” Penny said as she slid the drink towards her. "Thanks Pen." He said. "No problem, Hangman." With that Jake led her towards his friends. Hours went by. Hours of teaching Mandi to play pool, her ass pressed flush against his crotch as he leaned over her. Making out in the shadows until he finally asked. "Come home with me?" she grinned and kissed him again. "I was starting to think you'd never ask." With that he paid their tabs and she met him at the door. Iris was bored and tired. Mandi hasn't checked in with her and she was ready to leave.
"Excuse me? Penny?" The woman handed off the drink and turned to the girl. "What's up?" She asked. "Could you tell me what time it is?" Penny furrowed her brows at the girl. She looked at the clock behind her and back to Iris. "It's one a.m. We have thirty minutes till last call." Iris sighed. "Hey Penny!" A male voice startled Iris. "Oh, sorry. "Rooster said, looking down at the girl. "Ready to close?" Penny asked him. "I lost a game of pool to Phoenix so I have to pay hers too." She nodded and took his card. "Were you gonna ask me something else?" She asked as she ran Roosters card. "Um, have you seen my friend?" Penny looked to Rooster, a look of concern on her face. "Last I saw her, one of the aviators bought her a drink." Penny noticed Iris's eyes get glassy. "How many did Mandi have?" Penny felt bad, realizing she put the poor girl in a situation. "The one she bought and Hangman bought her five more." A tear of stress slipped down her cheek, she did not want to deal with a drunk Mandi. "Dammit." Iris muttered. "She was supposed to drive home. Now I have to get us a damn uber." Iris turned in the barstool. "Your friend Mandi? Is she tall? Blonde?" Truth be told, Iris has never seen Mandi to give a description but she does know she's tall and blonde. "Yeah." Rooster looked down at the girl whose eyes were glued to his sternum. "She left with my friend." He said as he rubbed the back of his neck. "What?" The worry in her voice caused his chest to ache. "How long ago?"
Mandi has done some shitty things but this was a new low. "About an hour and a half ago.” Iris huffed, pulling her phone out of her pocket and practically slamming it on the bar. Penny looked down at it just as a drunk patron came over. "PHONE ON THE BAR!" He yelled, "Penny! Ring the bell!" She glared at the man. "No. I'll be with you in just a minute." Iris turned to the man next to her before turning back to Penny. "What's he talking about?" Penny sighed. "We have a rule here. Disrespect a lady, the navy or put your phone on my bar, you buy a round.” Iris’ face fell as well as her gut. "I-I-I don't I didn't-" "I'm not gonna make you buy a round." She interrupted the stuttering girl. "Thank you." Iris pulled out a small wallet. "How much was Mandi's tab?" Penny shook her head. "Hangman already paid it." Iris let out a breath of relief. "At least one thing went right tonight." She stood from the bar stool, legs tingling from falling asleep. "I'm sorry. You were drinking water, so I assumed you were the DD." Iris shook her head.
"It's okay. You didn't know. I just don't drive." The Hard Deck was packed, bodies everywhere and Iris knew that. "Thanks for your help." She said to both of them before walking away. Penny and Rooster watched as she walked, keeping her hand out just enough to graze the barstools. She was going at a slow pace but just as she turned for the door she bumped into a guy. "Watch where the fuck you're going! Can you not see?" As if she was unfazed, Iris stepped around him, following a group of girls out the door. "Roaster? Will you go check on her? Something feels off about all of this." He nodded to Penny. "Just wait with her till she gets in her uber?" He shook his head, eyes never leaving the doors. "I'll give her a ride." Penny smiled at him." Thank you. Be careful." He left with an 'I will.’ and headed out the doors.
Iris managed to press her back against the building. She dragged her finger along her phone screen until she found her uber app. Opening it she attempted to order a ride but she was so upset that she kept missing the button. "Hey, need a ride?" She turned around when she heard the same voice from inside the bar. "Uh no. I'll get home on my own." She said, turning back around. Rooster watched as she looked down at her phone, muttering something before she groaned. He took a few steps forward and noticed her tense up. "Seriously, let me give you a ride. Your roommate shouldn't have just left you here, and I feel kind of bad since she did leave with my friend." She thought about it, remembering that Penny addressed him as Rooster. "Promise you'll take me home?" She was nervous, and he could tell, so he offered her a smile. "Nowhere else but your front door." She sighed and shoved her phone in her pocket. "Okay, Rooster. I'll let you drive me home." Rooster just grinned and nodded, finally getting a good look at her beautiful eyes as she faced him. "Awesome. Follow me."
He turned towards the Bronco, starting across the lot when he noticed she wasn't following. "Hey, my trucks this way." He said, and she slowly held out her hand. "Help me?" She asked. He furrowed his brows and walked closer, taking her small hand in his. "Sure. You okay?" She nodded and he led her over to the Bronco but he stopped when she saw her reach her hand out ahead of her, as if searching for the Bronco. "Hey, woah." He caught her as she almost tripped on a rock. "Sorry." She said, standing up straight. He let her go and watched her head swing around, as if looking for him when he's standing right in front of her. "Hey." She immediately faced him. "Can you not see?" He asked, keeping his tone gentle, not wanting her to assume he was making fun of her. "Um, no. I'm blind." Her voice was shaky. "Okay. Well let's get you in the truck and I'll get you home." She seemed relaxed by his reaction which made him smile down at her.
Even though she was glad Rooster reacted the way she did, she still sat against the passenger side door. Rooster just let the radio play until they pulled into the driveway of the address she gave him. "Okay, we're here. Stay there and I'll help you out.” She huffed. "I don't need help." She muttered and unbuckled. She pushed the door open and stepped onto the running board. "Here" Bradley held out his hand and she took it, feeling uneasy. "Thank you." She said, "I'll walk you to the door if you're okay with it." She nodded and he followed her to the door watching as she expertly unlocked the front door and sauntered in. "Thank you for the ride. Um, would you like something to drink?" She was looking at him and he finally got a good look at her. She was pretty, in a way that drew him in like a siren song. "Sure water is fine." She nodded and turned. Rooster worried she'd bump into a wall or even the furniture but she maneuvered around it all with a grace he's never seen. "You can have a seat on the couch if you want." He sat on the soft gray sectional and rubbed his sweaty palms on his jeans. When she came back she tucked her foot under herself as she sat. "So, what questions do you have?"
His eyes widened as he looked at her. "I- I don't have any questions." She gave him a look as if to say, ‘Yeaḥ right’. “I can answer any question you have. It doesn't bother me." She gave him a soft smile, almost encouraging him to ask questions. "Um, were you born blind?” Her smile grew and she giggled. "No. I went blind when I was seventeen." He raised his brows in surprise. "How?" He asked. "Meningitis. It was bad to say the least I nearly died." He stared at her. "When I started to get better, I noticed my eyesight worsening. Doctors said my ocular nerves were damaged beyond repair and we would have to wait and see how bad the damage would be." She seemed almost nonchalant about it. "Did they expect you to go totally blind?" She shook her head. "No, they actually said my chances for total blindness were slim. They expected some form of blindness but one day it was just gone." Bradley stared down at the water bottle resting against his leg. "Is it total darkness?" She nodded." "I can't even perceive light." Bradley felt a heaviness in the air and he didn't know what to say.
"Sorry.” Iris started "That took a dark turn." Iris laughed and Rooster bit his lip. "You can laugh if you found it funny." He chuckled a little. "I didn't mean to put a damper on the mood." Bradley quickly shook his head. "No. You didn't." She smiled at him, leaning her head to rest on the back of the couch "Going blind isn't a light topic, Rooster. It's normal to feel sad." He watched as her eyelids slowly closed and struggled to open again. "It's late, I should get home." She hummed and nodded. "I'll walk you out." She trailed behind him slowly. He opened the door and she held the handle as he stepped out. He looked at her as she stood there. "Are you sure you're gonna be okay here alone?" She chuckled at him. "Rooster, I've been blind for almost thirteen years, and I know my way around the house." He held his hands up in defense ‘Okay, don't question the blind woman.’ he thought. “Good night Iris." She gave him a smile. "Good night, Rooster." After a second she closed the door and locked it. A moment later she heard his footsteps descending the stairs. She was surprised. He waited till he heard the door lock.
The next morning Iris awoke feeling completely exhausted. She dragged herself downstairs, seeking the warmth of a coffee mug. Once her mug was full she grabbed the milk and sugar, pouring just a little of each into it. As she took her first sip, the front door opened. "Mandi?" She called out. Mandi walked into the house, heels in hand, hair in a messy bun and no bra because she couldn't find it when she got out of Jake's bed. She groaned and rolled her eyes when she heard Iris's voice. "What?" She barked. Iris clenched her teeth and inhaled through her nose and out through her mouth. "Just making sure it was you." Iris leaned on the wall next to the kitchen. "Who else would it fucking be?" Iris felt her eye twitch in frustration. "Anyone who can pick a lock. What the hell is your problem?" She asked and Mandi Iooked at her incredulously. "My problem? I have a hangover from hell!" Iris didn't react to her yelling. Mandi was a raging bitch when she didn't feel good. "Well that's not my fault. So don't yell at me. Also, while I have you here, what the fuck was up with leaving me stranded at the bar last night?!"
Mandi rolled her eyes knowing Iris couldn't see. "Oh calm down. You made it home alive didn't you?" Then Mandi furrowed her brows. "How did you get home?" Iris scoffed. "One of your fuck buddies friends brought me home." Mandi's brows raised "Which one?" "Rooster" Iris blurted. Mandi remembered him. Him and Jake argued a bit. "Ooh, he's hot." Inis rolled her own eyes this time, not caring that Mandi saw. "I wouldn't know anything about that. But he is very sweet and very kind to bring me home after your stunt. You've done shitty things before Mandi. But this was the worst." Mandi just wanted to sleep but she knew Iris wouldn't drop it. "I don't see the problem!" Iris was baffled. "The problem is you abandoned me in a place I've never been before even if I was sighted, it's a shit thing to do!" Mandi threw her hands up. "I'm too hungover for this shit." Iris scowled at her. "Just walk away like you do every other conversation Mandi!" Mandi slammed the door to her room, making Iris flinch.
