A Ghost Story for Christmas: A Warning to the Curious (BBC, 1972)
"An Anglo-Saxon crown. No one's ever discovered one before. And I found it."
"Well, you are to be congratulated, Mr. Paxton. And may I ask what you intend to do with it next?"
"I'm going to put it back."

in each other's arms
Tumblr media
pairing . roommates! mingi x gn reader about . 3k+ words, fluff warnings . i have an unhealthy obsession with writing when i’m sleep-deprived take this as you will. i also don’t write long fics so i’m super sorry in advance. reader has a thing for mingi’s arms (who doesn’t), there is cursing involved, slight mentions of alcohol, reader calls mingi annoying and stupid a couple of times but it’s endearingly, this is not proofread yolo
synopsis . you don’t understand why your roommate is suddenly afraid of the dark, but maybe offering him space to sleep next to you wasn’t the worst idea you’ve ever had. note . wrote this for a secret santa fic and decided to post here as well! i don't really stan ateez but writing this has definitely made me some sort of mingi stan 😭 also this was inspired by this episode of curious george, not crucial to understand the fic but definitely helpful
Tumblr media
You’re not quite sure how your roommate grew so accustomed to watching Curious George episodes every night, but it’s become a, to put simply, very distracting routine.
Returning home from work to find Mingi, part-time barista and your personal full-time teddy bear, watching a TV show wasn’t uncommon. Heck, customer service jobs were so horrible that even you would settle in front of the screen for the remainder of the day. You’d often walk in on a new Netflix series and even indulge in them with him, humming soundtracks while you both made dinner together or fall asleep cuddling to the end credits of each episode.
It was all fine until he found a Curious George playlist on YouTube with all 15 seasons, and being a nonsensically endearing child at heart, he’d made it his personal mission to cycle through all of them. Initially, it was nostalgic for you too, but after one too many times of seeing the stupid monkey and his yellow-adorned caretaker, you’d opt to crash in your banana-less bed after dinner instead.
Nights often end like this one, with you drifting into slumber and the glaring light of the TV screen peeking into your room underneath the door. Neither of you was that bothered by the change in routine anyway; you got more sleep and he got his screen time. Being roommates, understanding each other was key in your relationship, and although things were slightly different, the silent compromise was enough to keep the peace between you.
Or at least, it was enough until you hear three knocks on your bedroom door and a slight knob turn.
“Y/N? Are you awake?”
The whisper takes a while to register in your half-asleep state, and at the realization of his scared tone, you force yourself to shift into a sitting position before responding.
“Mingi? What’s wrong?”
He tiptoes into the room, turning on the light. The bright contrast from your previously dark room makes your eyes close instinctively, your pupils adjusting to Mingi’s blurry figure.
“Promise you won’t think I’m stupid?” he asks, an attentive gaze in his eyes.
The comment makes you laugh as you patted your bed, beckoning him onto the soft surface.
“You’ve been stupid to me, dumbass. Just tell me what’s wrong.”
He shuffles on the pillows, leaning in closer to whisper to you despite no one else being in the house.
“I think there are monsters in my room.”
Tumblr media
“Okay, let me get this straight. You watched a Curious George episode about him seeing shadow monsters in his room, and now you think they’re in your room too?”
You can see the pout on his face intensify as he turns all the lights on while walking to his room. You knew the episode he was talking about, the one where the monkey started envisioning oddly shaped shadows as monsters only to later learn they were just figments of his imagination, but you didn’t think it would affect your roommate that badly.
“No! Don’t turn on the light,” he exclaims as you screw open his doorknob, despite the rest of the house being engulfed in light because of his phobia.
“Why not?” you question, watching the door creak open and stepping into the room, pulling him along with you so he won’t run away.
“Look,” he points at an oddly shaped lump, “you can’t tell me that isn’t some evil slug out to get me.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s just—”
“And over there,” he beckons to a tall, conical structure, “that is literally an evil Christmas tree. I’m 100% sure we’re about to die.”
You sigh as you flick on the lights, your suspicions being confirmed.
“Did you even think to turn on the light? These so-called ‘monsters’ are just your pile of dirty laundry that I’ve been begging you to wash and your coat rack that I still can’t comprehend being in this room and not the doorway.”
“You’re right but,” he moves to turn off the light again, “why do they look so different in the dark? They’re shapeshifting! I’m not insane Y/N, just trust me.”
At this point, you’re too mentally and physically exhausted to even care about his antics. In some other period of time, you would’ve indulged his nightmares, but right now it’s far past your bedtime and the only thing on your mind is a long, relaxing sleep.
“Fine. You can sleep in my room tonight. I don’t have stupid coat racks or dirty laundry in my room for you to be scared of, and we can turn on the little night light I still have from third grade. Got it?”
You pretend not to notice the silent cheer he lets out behind your back as you make the trek back to your part of the building, killing the lights as you go. Mingi keeps an arm on your shoulder, and you notice he keeps his gaze on the wall beside him to avoid any potential shapeshifters in the living room.
After a thorough inspection of your room, Mingi deduces that there are indeed no shadow monsters. By then you’re already half asleep, curling into the right side so his hunk of a body has room.
“You sure this is okay?” he questions, stretching his arms and yawning.
Your tired gaze glazes over the ripples of his lean muscles illuminated by your snowman night light before answering with a nod, and you grumble when he flops on the bed and steals too much of your blanket.
“C’mere,” he voices, making grabby hands, “I miss cuddling with you.”
You make the meanest face possible and flip over to the other side, turning away from his seemingly shocked face.
“Wake me up for cuddles when you stop acting like a baby and grow a pair.”
And as you drift into slumber, despite your warnings you still feel the soft weight of his arm curl around your torso, sending you into the sweetest dreams full of fantastical butterflies.
Tumblr media
The next night, Mingi is knocking at your door again, albeit a couple of hours earlier than yesterday. He doesn’t even have to speak before you’re glaring at him, hands crossed in annoyance.
“I’m not letting you sleep here again. You stole too much of my blanket last time.”
You don’t mention to him that you had the best sleep of your life.
“That’s why I brought a blanket!” he exclaims, holding up his polka-dot fuzzy bedspread, “I also brought some popcorn so we can watch a movie on your shitty computer.”
Screw him for being thoughtful, and screw him for wearing the same brand of tank top that he did yesterday. Were his muscles always this prominent, or was it your nightlight making you see things?
“Shitty computer?” you repeat, threatening to close the door in his face.
“No! No… I think you misheard. I love your classic, old computer.”
His grin intensifies as you let him in, snapping the nightlight on and setting up the movie on your computer that is indeed shitty. The overheating of the device makes you turn away from his knowing smirk, and as the starting scenes flash across the blue light screen, you reach for the popcorn, only for him to move it out of your reach.
“Can we cuddle now at least? I meant it when I said I missed it.”
You don’t say anything in response, keeping your eyes trained on the screen, but your hand does reach over to grab a kernel, giving him the green light to wrap an arm around your shoulder. You know that if you refused, he would bring up the embarrassing fact of how you woke up curled into his arm, and you weren’t really in the mood to fight a blush on your cheeks.
“You know, I don’t understand why you’re still scared of the dark when Curious George clearly overcomes his fear at the end of the episode.”
“He does?”
You turn to look at him, confused.
“Did you not finish the episode?”
“I haven’t touched the show since the beginning of that episode. I’m scarred.”
You still believe that this is some sort of sick prank Mingi has been playing on you because there’s no way a 23-year-old man would be this frightened over a figment of his imagination. However, it means you don’t have to bear the stupid ape’s squeaky voice as you fall asleep, so you take the win.
“You know you can’t keep sleeping in my room like this. Why don’t you just clear your room so you won’t be afraid anymore?”
“I like the organized chaos.”
“Oh yeah? The organized chaos that shapeshifts into your worst nightmares?”
“So they do shapeshift! See Y/N, I’m not crazy.”
He is crazy, but the way his arm feels around your shoulder is enough to make you stay quiet as you shovel popcorn into your mouth and watch the movie blur before your eyes.
You awake to find yourself in the same position, and although your head is awkwardly and painfully resting in the crook of Mingi’s shoulder, you find that you once again have garnered a good night’s sleep.
Although you can only see the side of his face, his frame is so beautiful that you can’t help but melt into a puddle of nothingness. The sunlight peeking in from the gaps of your blinds illuminates his face in rays so perfectly, and you have the urge to brush his orange-stained hair behind his ears to gain a better view.
Mingi has always been breathtakingly beautiful. You met him a couple of years ago in college, bonding over the uncertainty of where your future would take you. Ending up together in this small yet comfortable apartment together was something you hadn’t expected, but something you’re learning not to take for granted. His silly quirks and endearing behavior are like a magnet, and it’s hard to not have feelings for someone whom you’re so domestic with every day, but you both are busy with your own lives and have never had time to properly explore those feelings.
Falling asleep in each other’s arms is the closest form of intimacy you’ve shared with him, and you’ve learned to cherish and be grateful for it.
Knowing that both of you are bound to end up with a crick in your necks if you stay in this position any longer, you slowly shake him awake, pushing away your thoughts as you feel him stir underneath your palm.
“Mingi, wake up. You’re going to kill me with your complaints if you wake up with sore limbs.”
“I like sleeping in your arms,” he grumbles, and it’s a little too obvious how your heart constrains at the words.
“I know, but I promise you’d feel much better if you slept properly on the bed. I’ll reward you with an amazing breakfast, I promise.”
The mention of food has him relaxing in your arms, and you move so that he’s sleeping normally against the pillow. The thoughts of waking up next to him and cooking breakfast for him are all very normal, but they’re so domestic that it has your early-morning mind go haywire at the implications.
You tell your brain to shut up and get off the bed to make breakfast before Mingi cusses you out.
Tumblr media
Mingi appears in your bed the next day, the day after that, and many more days after that. At this point, your room has now become a shared room, and Mingi has become a prominent figure in your sheets. Hell, your pillows have even started to smell like him, and you don’t know whether you find it annoying or endearing.
A smaller part of your brain, one that you choose to push aside, fears that you’ve grown too attached to this routine. Sure, before Mingi’s monkey infatuation you’ve woken up next to each other on an occasional morning, arms sore from accommodating each other on the sofa, but you’ve never continuously spent nights with him in the same space regularly like this. Now that the routine has become more frequent, the atmosphere has gone from friendly to something else, and you don’t particularly know if you want to uncover it yet.
Besides, sleeping in the same bed is normal for roommates… right?
“Y/N, sleeping in the same bed with an attractive bachelor that just so happens to be your roommate is definitely not normal.”
Okay, so San agrees to disagree.
“I’m being serious,” he says, shaking you by the shoulder, “you’re going to end up catching feelings, and it’ll either end up with you heartbroken and apartment-less or you getting a new boyfriend. There is a fifty-fifty chance. Don’t risk it.”
You turn to look at Mingi across the room, dressed up in a silk shirt and slacks. His hair is styled in that annoying not-so-styled-but-still-styled manner, and it makes you want to run your fingers through it. Badly. Seeing him sleeveless in the mornings is bad enough, but seeing him cleaned up at a mutual friend’s birthday party makes you want to go feral.
“You should’ve given me that warning before he started sleeping next to me,” you mumble under your breath, but unfortunately San is perceptive, and nothing escapes his ears.
“Great. I can’t believe you already have feelings for him. You’re done for at this point. What is he even so scared of anyway that has him crying in your arms every night?”
You explain the details with a frown on your face, not wanting to mull over any possible rejection you might get from Mingi.
“Oh,” San starts.
“Oh?”
“That changes everything.”
You stare at San with a perplexed gaze, prompting him to elaborate.
“Look, Mingi is stupid, but do you really think he’s that stupid? Come on Y/N, even if he was scared of the dark, he would’ve gotten over it in three days.”
You hit him on the shoulder, causing him to yelp.
“Don’t play with me San,” you berate, watching him clutch the area you just hit, “why else would he be sleeping in my room if he wasn’t scared?”
“The same reason you started having feelings for him! Because you both enjoy waking up next to each other and being together. He likes you Y/N.”
The words drift around in your brain, and you process them for a couple of seconds before glaring at San.
“If he liked me, he would’ve told me.”
“That’s what you think. But do you really know him that well if you couldn’t even figure out the reason he’s been sleeping next to you? What if he’s just scared to tell you?”
San has a point, but you don’t want to admit it. As you watch Mingi beckon you over to try some food on the counter and likely force you to shovel down a disgusting combination of food, you and San share a mutual glance to stop talking about the topic.
However, as you walk over, you can’t help your brain from overanalyzing everything that shouldn’t be. The way he smiles too brightly at you, the way he holds your arm gently as he tugs you over, and the way he keeps you hydrated throughout the night make your head spin. Everything normal suddenly seemed different, and you didn’t know if the change was welcome or not.
Tumblr media
Later that night, when you and Mingi return exhausted to your apartment, your brain feels more tired than ever. You’ve never been much of a thinker, but currently, your head feels worse than a hangover, and you don’t want to mull over anything drastic. Keeping your distance from the guy who supposedly has feelings for you back is harder than it seems, but you’re not in the mood to confront him right now.
However, Mingi has other plans. He sits you by the bed, helping you take off your jacket and accessories and untying your shoes. You realize that he’s picked up on your exhaustion, and you feel extremely guilty for wanting to push him away mere seconds ago. He is so charming at this very moment, and you feel nothing but enamored for the love you’ve received from him tonight and all the time you’ve spent together.
The words are flowing out of your mouth before you can even stop yourself.
“Do you like me?”
He stops mid-shoelace, looking up at you. You realize how awkward and uncomfortable of a position this is for him, but it’s too late to turn back now.
“Did it take you this long to notice?”
You feel like you’re being shoved underwater. The world hazes before your eyes, and the words are muffled as they enter your ears.
“What?”
He laughs, and the loss of your senses makes you realize how beautiful of a sound it really is.
“You’ve always called me stupid, but I think you’re the one that’s actually stupid here. I’ve liked you for a while now, silly. Why do you think I help you make dinner when I hate cooking?”
‘Oh’ is the only word floating in your head right now.
“So, the Curious George thing was fake?”
“Kind of. I was a little scared the first night, not going to lie, but after finding out how much I missed sleeping next to you, I figured I’d use it to my advantage. I’m honestly surprised you didn’t figure out or kick me out sooner.”
He sees you bury your head in your hands, too shocked to internalize anything right now.
“Hey,” he says, holding your shoulder, “you don’t need to say anything right now. I know it’s probably a lot to take in, and I know you’re probably exhausted after that party. Just sleep on it, okay? We can talk later.”
He finishes untying your laces and gets up to leave, but you pull on his shirt, stopping him in his tracks.
“Don’t go,” you whisper, “I like it when you’re here.”
He smiles so gently, so so gently that you want to stare at him forever.
“Alright, I’ll stay,” he whispers back, despite no one else being in the house, “do you want me to continue sleeping next to you?”
“Yeah,” you breathe out after a pause.
“Yeah, I’d like that.”

no but if you dont watch the nancy drew show you DONT UNDERSTAND the gravity of ace carving his initials as "A.H." like...
so. all of nancy's friends have the same names as her friends in the nancy books, with some tweaks. bess marvin became bess turani marvin. george fayne was george fan. ned nickerson is still ned nickerson but he goes by "nick" in the show. but ace? ace was an original character. without a last name. the only person in the main cast without one.
a curious choice, yes? to deliberately withhold a last name for one single character? why would they do that? hm?
we KNOW that nancy drew and the hardy boys are a big thing in the books. and making him a canonical hardy boy sounds like a good idea, right? the problem is that the rights to that IP were owned by another company, as they have a hardy boys tv show. so, the nancy drew team couldn't, legally, call ace joe/frank hardy.
BUT. they did little things throughout the series to hint at it. not only did they constantly tease ace's last name (by having characters ask what it was, or have his work badge leave it off entirely). but they also (spoilers) gave ace a brother (who's name is grant. ace/joe grant/frank? walk with me here). his dad was a police detective, his mom was a librarian (just like the hardy boys' parents). he was an eagle scout, and i believe joe hardy was a boy scout.
so then. to have the characters all carve their names under a table and have ace writing his initials as "A.H."
it's just!! it's so!!!!! it makes me scream eternally.
they couldn't legally make him a hardy boy bc of stupid IP laws. but that's who he was. to us! to nancy! he was always her hardy boy. always. forever.

Uhura hate vs Concerned fans? Who is really winning?
In response to SNW Uhura hate, I will like to address this objectively and logically.
1. Admitting it is wrong to hate or bully ceelia gooding.
2. Also saying she is miscast in the role of Uhura.
I do not condone any hate or racism to any actor. Nonetheless I do believe some actor are not right for a part or sometimes actors are miscast deliberately for a part to push an agenda.
The very first time I saw the promo for snw, I was shocked at the Uhura photos as I could not truly tell if that was meant to be a boy or a girl. having to now accept that, this is meant to be a young Nyota felt too far-fetched.
We should not condone hate. However fans also need space to express genuine  concerns. I do NOT believe that the majority of people that say Ceelia Gooding is miscast hate her. they don’t just think she is right for the role and I agree.
SNW will never have cast a  Danny DeVito or a Jason Alexander actor in the role as Spock. They also would never have cast a Rosie O'Donnell as T-Pring or Chapel or Una. I love all these actors but they will be 100% wrong for some trek roles. This is the same with Ceelia Gooding as Uhura, an actress who may also be undergoing gender hormone therapy as a non-binary actor. It makes sense that Uhura looks very androgynous on the show, she is played by a non binary actor.
Sometimes even with racism, some actors still fit the part that could not be denied. Look at Halle Bailey, despite not been white she was still a perfect casting of Ariel in the little mermaid. This is not the case with Ceelia Gooding. There is nothing about her that is similar to TOS Uhura or what made Uhura Iconic.

Alright friend, you caught me on a day when I've got some extra time and spoons so I'm gonna try and engage with your message under the assumption of good faith (but to be clear, with all due respect, framing your message as "objective" and "logical" is giving big dogwhistle energy...)
Quick piece of context setting, I'm mostly familiar with Star Trek media through social osmosis and not personally watching the movies or tv shows, but I would say I'm familiar enough for a general conversation. I also did about 30min of additional research to double check my info but if I get some details wrong, that's why.
For anyone unfamiliar, Strange New Worlds (SNW) is a prequel to the original series of Star Trek (TOS) so they feature a handful of the same characters.
Now, you say there is "nothing about [Celia Gooding] that is similar to TOS Uhura or what made Uhura iconic." I think there's plenty about Gooding that is similar to Nichelle Nichols/TOS Uhura. They are both black, they are both relatively femme presenting, neither is visibly physically disabled, and they are pretty close to the same height (5ft5in vs 5ft8in). So then are you upset that SNW Uhura wears her hair short? Or are you upset that she wears pants and a tunic style jacket as her standard costume rather than sheer tights and a dress that barely covers her butt?
As an aside, "iconic" is a wholly subjective category but I don't disagree that Uhura is an iconic character. That being said, since you point out that quality, if you're up for sharing, I'm curious what you think made TOS Uhura iconic that is so different with SNW Uhura.
To quickly address your counter example, sure, if Danny Devito were cast in a prequel role to Leonard Nimoy's Mister Spock, that would strain credulity. But let me ask you this -- do you *really* see the same level of difference between the visual presentation of Danny Devito vs Leonard Nimoy and Celia Gooding vs Nichelle Nichols? Really? Let me grab a few pictures just to be sure we're all seeing the same people...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image description: two photos, both featuring two men standing side by side; on the left is Danny Devito, a shorter heavy-set man, with George Clooney, a much taller and slim man; on the right is Leonard Nimoy with Jim Parsons, they are both tall and slim /end id)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image description: two photos, both featuring femme-presenting individuals standing alone and looking into the camera; the one on the left is wearing a silky red ball gown with a deep-v neckline that shows off their boobs, they are wearing light makeup and some jewelry and their dark hair is buzzed short; the one on the right is wearing a glittery gold ball gown that has two high slits to show off her legs, she is also wearing some makeup and jewelry and her longer fluffier hair is styled in an updo typical of the 1960s /end id)
Look.......... the only specific/clear(ish) objections you've raised about Gooding getting cast in this role are about her appearance. As I have hopefully sufficiently demonstrated, I think those concerns are unfounded. If you have issues with the narrative/plot/character development for SNW Uhura, your problem should be with the writers and not with Celia.
If you're up for a little self reflection, try and get more specific about what bothers you so much about the situation. Connecting some dots here, you said SNW Uhura is too different from TOS Uhura to be acceptable to you, but you did not raise the same concerns about Ethan Peck as SNW Spock, even though he's also different from Leonard Nimoy as TOS Spock. What's the difference in the differences that makes one of these fine and one of these not?

another xiao thought that kept me going this week was that if he lived in a modern era like ours, as an adeptus, not in an AU where he's human, he would really like children's cartoons.
i'm talking blue's clues, winnie the pooh, curious george, thomas and friends, that type of shows.
i can picture a xiao who lives in modern times, sitting down every morning with a cup of tea to watch some TV channel's children's block, finding some form of comfort within the peaceful, fictional worlds of children's cartoons.
not to say he dislikes other forms of entertainment and genres, and certainly not to infantilizate him. he can definitely watch plot-heavy series if he wants to with no problem and he's most definitely not a child.
however, he's specially fond of children's shows because they're simple and peaceful. even if the characters get into trouble, he already knows they're going to be alright. nothing will ever go wrong in those cartoons, and all the characters get to live happily ever after and continue having fun together and go on adventures every day.
for someone as old as xiao, for someone who has watched as the world shifted and changed and most of the people he cared about fell and left one by one tied to their own circumstances, for someone who to this day struggles with a mind filled with heavy, dark thoughts and a very much still present karmic debt, a world such as those of children's cartoons provide the heart a temporary respite.
they are comforting. he likes the comfort they bring.
if he's feeling vulnerable enough, he might cry a little when hearing one of those simple, straight-forward dialogues meant to teach children about the value of friendship, or of honesty, or of trust, or of life, or of anything at all.
if he's feeling vulnerable enough, he will watch those shows, and grieve for the innocence he lost when he was enslaved all those millennia ago.
and once the block of children's cartoons is over, he turns the TV off and stands up, ready to go out and fulfill his duty.
even if nowadays he has so little to do that he knows not what else to do with his time, he still fulfills his duty.
he still fulfills his duty day after day for the sake of the innocent.

PBS Kids Shows I Have Nostalgia For
Sesame Street (don’t @ me, it was the only thing on at 7:00 am or whenever the heck I’d wake up for school)
Super Why! (didn’t mind it. The pea girl actually inspired one of my current EAH OCs)
The Magic School Bus (duh)
Bill Nye the Science Guy (duh again)
Arthur (not my fav, but a classic)
Clifford (I was OBSESSED with the movie as a kid)
Liberty’s Kids (my dad showed it to us via YouTube. It’s amazing)
Curious George (didn’t like it as much, but it was on all the damn time, so I still remember a lot about it. Now I feel a tad bit of nostalgia for it)
Word Girl (not my fav for SOME REASON. Love it upon rewatching it. Still loved the villains as a kid)
Word World (rarely watched it, but sometimes caught it, and it facinated me)
Martha Speaks (yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhh baby now we’re talking. Mainly my sib’s fav, but I grew to love it, and we named our dog Martha. I also have most of the theme song memorized)
Sid the Science Kid (hated it, but I had a short attention span, so I would watch it anyways. Might’ve had a crush on the teacher. I liked the repetative formula. I still remember the germs episode)
The Electric Company (2009) (underrated. Facinated by the lore. Love the opening. Cried when it was cancelled)
Dinosaur Train (same feelings as Curious George)
The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That (I found it both annoying and fun)
Wild Kratts (FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:DDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!! This show was my special interest for years. It goes hard. My dad still makes references to it. We memorized the theme song. I love this show so much. Martin was my biggest crush at the time. I would die for this show)
Odd Squad (Masterpiece. Can’t get enough of it. Didn’t watch every season, but still love it to death. Bought the movie and I still watch it sometimes. Mom loves it too. Me and my sib would never miss an episode. I still remember the premiere. We were eating breakfast in front of the tv, when a new show came on. “Huh, must be a new show,” my mom said. We decided to just sit through it and watch the first episode. And oh boy, by the time it ended, I decided that I was gonna watch this show every morning and Wild Kratts every afternoon. And that’s how it all began. Still need to finish the series)
~~~~~
So yeah, I was a huge PBS Kids kid growing up. Didn’t have cable, and I’m honestly glad, because then I wouldn’t have had all these growing up. And I’m so glad I had them.
If you had the chance to change something about the dance of the dragons (TV show or book), what would it be? For example, how a character dies, which team a house is on,or an entire character personally. How would you change it to make the story better, in your opinion? 💙💚🖤♥️
JUST ONE THING. ANON U R A SADIST.
aksjdjd no okay thank you great ask. sorry if it’s a lil all over the place, i think obsessively about how i would adapt f&b and asoiaf if i was a millionaire lmao.
for the show it’s so easy (besides just giving it like ten more episodes to cook before getting to the Dance, I mean) - lean into the dueling protagonists of alicent & rhaenyra by giving them dueling deuteragonists in aegon ii and jacaerys. i realize this would completely reframe the whole show lmao, but we can even compromise and say once they do that ten year skip, the narrative should focus in on building up the two sides through the dueling protagonists alicent & rhaenyra, and dueling deuteragonists aegon & jace. it makes way more sense to have the character they most interact with be their sons & “heirs” and contrast those relationships & all the politics that exist in how they act as mothers towards their sons. rather than focus in on daemon as the second main character for rhaenyra and…this weird fucking musical chairs male protagonist with the greens they’re doing. it doesn’t fix everything but i think shifting the focus from rhaenyra’s marriages to her as a mother and queen regnant, and from alicent’s conga line of abuses to again, an active role as a mother and queen consort/queen mother, as well as fleshing out the two men who are objectively thee most important men in their lives (argue with the wall jace & aegon haters!!!!). explaining why jace & aegon developed into the sort of men they are through how they exist in the most important relationship in their lives, literally until the day they both die. (and if you’re curious, daemon’s counterpart is aemond, they get to be number three for both their sides. viserys isn’t on a “team” but he does have a counterpart and it’s QOREN).
i think the way they did it in the show really does a disservice to the potential of aegon and especially jacaerys as characters, as well as downplaying the importance of a lot of critical relationships like rhaewin, laenyra, criston’s entire demented relationship with both women, rhaenys’ relationship with laena & rhaenyra, alicent’s whole ass relationship with her kids, AND rhaenyra’s whole ass relationship with her kids. imo they go for this kind of half in half out “we want to appeal to the insane targ stans who genuinely believe incest will save westeros” and “we want to write a story about the complexities of motherhood & sexuality in a patriarchal society” and wound up in a weird place where daemon & alicent are both bisexual but only in deleted scenes and completely drop rhaenyra’s gender fuckery the moment she’s played by an actually non-binary actor and also completely bury the other non-binary actor (rhaena’s actor, phoebe campbell) by giving their character like two fucking lines and no depth.
also better wigs jesus FUCKING christ hbo i know you have the budget!!
for the books….a lot of the problem with the dance is that f&b is so antithetical to how george writes. it’s effectively a very long and detailed outline of a plot and george doesn’t write exclusively by outline. as he says himself, he gardens - he writes and he sees where the writing takes him. if he had actually sat down and written out the dance as a series of short stories the way he does with dunk & egg, i think the plot would not only be massively different it would also be leaps and bounds better. what i want to change is to make george actually WRITE the dance and not just outline and call it a day!!!!
BUT. Okay if I can change ONE thing. fuck that’s hard.
I’d make Larys’ motivation more clear, and when i say more clear i mean my theory is that Larys just straight up hated the Targaryens and Velaryons bc he believed one of them killed Harwin, and decided to get revenge by completely fucking over the whole family tree. i get why people like his show version (I like parts of him a lot too and the actor has some galaxy brained takes!!!) but i think while Larys is well done, his character adaption & the way he’s completely unknowable in the series itself is just a rehash of Tyrion. We already have a disabled younger brother who hates his older brother for being condescending in his love & conditional acceptance, and hates his father for being a patriarchal monster, and is a sexually abusive menace to teenage girls, and I don’t think they are saying anything new or groundbreaking with Larys in the show or book. He is just there to be the evil crippled henchman, and then die.
No, what I want is a true chaos agent to rival Littlefucker, a man who becomes obsessively and uncomfortably devoted to Harwin, the only person in his entire life who ever treated him with any love or respect or care, who launches this bloody, demented quest to completely wipe out every Valyrian left alive for the misuse and murder of his brother. Willing to help kill his own nephews. Willing to burn the kingdom to the ground. Willing to destroy his own house if it means Harwin will be avenged, if it means the dragons die. All leading to Larys getting his Pyrrhic victory and choosing to die because he feels he has nothing left.
Why the extreme change? I think it fits better with a lot of the themes in F&B and the dance in particular - not just family, and “the things we do for love” but the legacy of Valyria, of the Targaryens and the dragons, the clash and growing pains of this group of interlinked cultures learning to tolerate each other’s existence on the same continent, and of course, what being told every day of your life that you’re a monster does to how you view yourself. You can keep all the rest of his weird behavior from the show and the books even - the sexual abuse of Alicent being Larys unable to stop himself from turning into the same sort of awful man his father was; of him switching sides without a care or without any seeming sense in the books, always ready to be the devil on a shoulder to Viserys, Aegon, Alicent, and Corlys - but a little bit here and there to let us know that Larys genuinely loved Harwin until the bitter end. We already have several stories about a brother who grows to resent another and lets the resentment fester until he’s willing to cross a line you can’t come back from and murder his brother for a perceived sleight. I think Larys & the dance as a whole benefit from him being a brother who romanticizes and saintifies Harwin (but not lyonel!) so much that he weaponizes his years of resentment & turns it against the entire world and damn the consequences. I think he fits in much more with Rhaenyra, Alicent, Corlys, Viserys, Daemon, and Rhaenys that way and steps away from being Tyrion but slightly to the left and into his own type of character instead.
TV Show - CSI: Las Vegas
Tumblr media
As mentioned in the last post about Dr. House, I felt like watching a crime series. The temptation was strong because Prime added the first three seasons of Rizzoli & Isles to its program. But I decided to go with CSI: Las Vegas because it's been longer since I last rewatched it compared to Rizzoli & Isles.
Right in the first two episodes, I notice a lot of details, and I might end up writing a lot about them. Let's see how long I can keep it up!
One thing that stands out right away is the age of the series. And by that, I don't mean a specific year but the aspect ratio, which is still in 4:3. 16:9 will come later, but I can't remember exactly when. I'm curious to find out.
Catherine Willows already shows character traits here that will later drive me crazy. I remember finding her very demanding in the later seasons. She always comes up with arguments to bend the rules so she can break them later. However, in the successor format CSI: Vegas, she becomes interesting again.
During the autopsy scene where Grissom and Nick help, you could see the eyes of the millionaire blinking. I always find such details interesting. Sometimes you can see the "corpses" moving their chests, the carotid artery pulsating, or a body part moving. If I remember correctly, some shots use a still image to avoid such mistakes.
We still miss important characters like Super Dave and Doc Robbins. But one person we see very early on is the firearms specialist Bobby!
I also noticed Grissom's mood during the dummy experiments, which reminded me why I find him so intriguing. He's a man of facts, and as the series progresses, he becomes less and less able to deal with society and its quirks.
Voices are another topic because we have two very distinctive voices right from the start, one of which stays with us. Holly Gribbs is voiced by Sandra Schwittau, who is the German voice of Bart Simpson, played by Nancy Cartwright. Nick Stokes (George Eads) is voiced by David Nathan, who is not only one of the most distinctive German voices but also the regular voice of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.
I'm thrilled to be back in Vegas, to see how everything unfolds, what cases they work on, and what questions arise. Because I already have one question: Even though Warrick was overseeing Gribbs since she was new, no one asks what happened to the officer at the crime scene where Holly was shot. Sure, Brass was reassigned, but that's about it. I find it extremely strange. (Although I'm aware that this is used to show the tragedy surrounding Warrick's character!)
Otherwise, the first season is always the most interesting because this is where the series is still finding itself, and many things are still changing. There's a lot to discover and admire, especially when it comes to the development of the characters.
I'll also thoroughly enjoy all the special effects because many of them were created without CGI, and practical effects are still among the best because they are tangible and provide a sense of depth that CGI simply can't achieve. I know, it's a big debate, but it's like photography. Digital photography is great, no doubt, but that final step to achieve exactly what's possible in analog photography is still missing. It's not much, and I know both sides very well, but it's just that tiny bit that's still missing!
In the German version, when Nick talks to Sanders, it's briefly mentioned or asked if Sanders is already playing the "Football game on Dreamcast." Once again, it shows that someone involved in writing the dialogue didn't have a clue. That always annoys me. Either video games look terrible in movies/shows, or they mix up everything and leave out details.
Hey, you said in a previous ask that you didn't like most horror TV shows but there were some you liked, could you recommend good horror TV shows? (No pressure)
I'm curious
Thanks!
I've probably run into a few others, but Z-Nation and Chucky are the ones which have given me the most delight.
Their shared characteristics are that my expectations were super low. For Z-Nation, it was an Asylum produced SciFi network show that looked like a knock off of The Walking Dead (a series I came to loathe so much I couldn't even enjoy it in the background). While I suspect it started life that way, the show runners made a strong commitment to the aesthetics, the overarching plot, and the quality of the characters which made it stand out. At every turn where TWD was cynical, trite, gloomy or boring, Z-Nation was joyful and silly, fun without losing the horror, invested in the characters without grinding them constantly through endlessly dull cycles of interpersonal drama. It puts a black woman out in front as one of the main characters and features endlessly absurd ideas that also manage to cut deeply into the reality of human experience. Z-Nation fundamentally understands that the world falling into chaos is surreal as much as harrowing, and being injured or traumatized can make you laugh as much as you cry. It is, and I say this with all sincerity, deserving to carry forward the mantle of the zombie genre from George Romero. Also it's absurdly gorgeous.
Tumblr media
Chucky well, I love the movies, but I wasn't sure how involved Don Mancini was in production or if the show would really run with the same kind of weirdness or over the top violence as the movies, but shockingly it came through firing away on all cylinders. I've written on it recently enough you can probably just search on my blog.
★ my opinion on the sides from favorite to least favorite are as follows: roman, logan, remus, virgil, janus, patton.
★ i am an avid remy enjoyer and i think emile picani is cool.
★ i do a lot of canon-deviant headcanons such as race headcanons, pronoun headcanons, and disability headcanons. i am very respectful of these things and do lots of research, mainly because such headcanons are usually projections of myself and my own experiences.
★ i write a lot of sanders sides fanfiction and roleplay ideas, as well as aus. feel free to use anything you'd like for inspiration as long as you give me credit! i've had my work stolen before and it doesn't feel good.
★ my least favorite ships are pretty much all patton ships and remrom. i'm not a remrom destroyer who will burn down your house if you ship remrom (as long as they're like- not explicitly brothers) but i'm an identical twin so the idea of them being in love is super weird to me lmao. i can't take it seriously.
Is It Really That Bad?
Tumblr media
It’s hard to deny that in the 2000s, Will Ferrell was the comedy star. Starting off with minor roles in stuff like Austin Powers and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Ferrell hit it big in 2003 with the Christmas classic Elf, and then followed that up with the wacky newscaster comedy masterpiece Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. From there, the hits just kept coming: Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, Blades of Glory, Stranger Than Fiction, Curious George, and even a hilarious one-scene cameo in the Wedding Crashers. The man was on top of the world!
Tumblr media
But then came 2009’s Land of the Lost. Based on a campy 70s sci-fi series, the movie was a pretty big bomb coming from such a massively successful actor; on a budget of a hundred million, it only managed to make about sixty-nine million back. Director Brad Silberling was relegated to producing TV after this, and poor Ferrell’s prospects as a leading man completely shriveled up overnight. After this, he basically has only co-starred in stuff like The Other Guys or done voice work for films like Megamind and The Lego Movie. Any attempts to get him back on top have been pretty middling, to put it lightly; does anyone remember Anchorman’s sequel? Does anyone want to remember Holmes & Watson?
Tumblr media
But come on, it’s a 2000s Will Ferrell comedy! He was in his prime back then! Surely this wacky spoof of some goofy show from the 70s couldn’t honestly be that bad, right? Well, that’s what we’re here to find out. Was it justice that Will Ferrell’s promising leading man rep was lost harder than a Sleestak’s skin during sex, or is this a hidden gem unfairly judged because people didn’t understand it was meant to be a parody?
THE GOOD
The Sleestaks are easily the best part of the film, at least when they don’t have those awful CGI mouths transplanted on them. The suits look great, they’re weirdly adorable lizard people, and they mercifully didn’t go with the awful, edgy redesign from the 90s reboot. These guys are pure goofy 70s camp.
Tumblr media
The score of all things is solid too. Michael fucking Giacchino did the score! And it fucking rocks! Unbelievable!
youtube
...Yeah, that’s all I’ve got.
THE BAD
Oh where do I even fucking start? How about with Ferrell himself?
Tumblr media
Look, I’m a big Will Ferrell apologist. His comedies tend to be absurdly lowbrow, especially something like Step Brothers, but he has a certain manic energy that makes him fun to watch. Here, though? All of the negative aspects of his acting are cranked up t eleven. He’s shoutier, he’s douchier, he’s just obnoxious and ridiculous… He’s just utterly unpleasant in this role.
It’s not like anyone else is remotely pleasant, though! Danny McBride especially is obnoxious in this film, and Anna Friel is boring and forgettable, but as bad as they are neither of their characters hold a candle to Chaka. Played by Jorma Taccone (of all fucking people!), he is an obnoxious chattering monkey man who is basically treated like a servant and who is played so obnoxiously that I swear to God he feels like he’s racist somehow. I don’t know what race this would offend, but it just has some sort of rancid vibes that only a racist caricature does.
Tumblr media
The CGI throughout this film is just utterly ass. Like there is an awful CGI dinosaur antagonist, and at one point Will Ferrell vaults into its mouth, and at another he slides down its back, and both of them are effects so bad they make Sharktopus look like Avatar in comparison. I’m guessing that hundred million mostly went to Ferrell’s paycheck and the Sleestak suits, because it sure as hell didn’t go into the visuals.
Tumblr media
Truly the worst thing about this movie is that its very existence feels cruel and mean-spirited. I have never watched the original show at all, but this parody is absolutely barefaced with its contempt for the source material. It just oozes a lack of care, passion, or respect beyond surface level stuff like the Sleestaks; do you know how much the characters are mangled from the show to the screen? The big bad of this movie is a fucking ally on the show! Imagine if they made a movie based on Scooby-Doo and they made oh, I don’t know, Scrappy a villain, wouldn’t that fucking su—wait.
Tumblr media
At least in that movie’s case it was one singular lame element. This movie is just an excruciating exercise in being as lame and unpleasant as possible. It genuinely feels like it was just made because they had the rights to Land of the Lost and then they remembered the name of Ferrell’s character in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and decided they needed a Ferrell vehicle.
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
Look, I know absolutely nothing about this series. I have no emotional attachment to it at all. I’ve never seen a single episode. But I don’t think you even have to watch a single episode to know that this movie is a slap in the face to fans of it. The entire thing just feels spiteful, and coming from a place of sheer malice. Yes, this film is that fucking bad, I can totally see why it blew up Ferrell’s career, and honestly it should count itself lucky that it has been forgotten because I say this film deserves even more hate. This is The Love Guru levels of bad. That 5.3 up there is beyond generous; this is easily a contender for the bottom 100 of IMDB, but I guess that would require anyone to give a shit about it.
But hey, as a non-fan, maybe my opinion doesn’t hold as much weight as what a truefan of the series would say. Thankfully, I have one of those on call, and here’s his summation of this film’s quality:
Hey, it’s me, @unadulteratedpiratepizza, and I’m here to take you on a journey back in time! Long before streaming services, TV shows aired their new episodes on different designated times and days of the week, and Saturday mornings were the slot for new episodes of children’s programming. Back in the 70’s, long before me and Michael were born, the brothers Sid and Marty Kroft were the kings of that time slot, with their bizarre plots and expert use of their low budget, bringing us classics such as H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, and the subject of today’s review, Land of the Lost.
Land of the Lost was a high-concept soft Sci-Fi series exploring the adventures of Rick Marshall and his children Will and Holly, as they explore a bizarre world full of danger and mystery. They must survive hungry dinos, aggressive lizard people, and even time-displaced humans, as they search for the truth of this world and a way to get back home.
Unlike the high energy upbeat shows the Kroffts were known for, LotL was more serious in tone at times, with a pretty consistent world and strong stories. LotL had a team of prolific Sci-Fi writers, a number of which worked on the original Star Trek, which had the effect of some of the stories feeling like TOS episodes. No jokes, “The Stranger '' is such a strong episode with heavy Star Trek vibes, written by Walter Koenig, the actor for TOS’s Chekov.
When I said the Kroffts knew how to use a low budget I meant it, using stop-motion for all the dinos and reusing that footage constantly, cheap costumes and goofy special effects, this show had it all! But, you could have the best special effects in the world and that would amount to nothing without strong acting, and boy does Land of the Lost deliver on that. Everyone is bringing 110% to this show, which is so surprising given that child actors aren’t usually considered the best for serious roles, but when I hear these children scream for their lives as goofy costumed lizardmen shamble towards them, by god I feel like the Sleestak are the most terrifying creatures in the world.
All and all, Land of the Lost was a strong and fun show that took its world seriously, but still had plenty of room for light-hearted fun. It is unfortunate that by the 3rd and final season, most of the writers had moved on, and the actor who played the dad had also left, leaving it the weakest of the three, but I can still say this is a show I highly recommend, especially if you like old Star Trek.
The 2009 Will Ferrell led remake sucks.
And I think that’s all that needs to be said about that. Anyway, here’s a picture of a nightmarish, terrifying predator with a couple of Sleestaks.
The other day I was talking with @hey-sherry about Poirot and Holmes' relationships and how Holmes and Watson got separated at the end in canon but the bad ending is easier mitigated; yet in Poirot it's totally another beast. (there's some spoilers involved in not only Poirot but all kinds of things but I guess...since nothing is new so I'm safe to proceed?)
All Poirot's problems lie in the final book, Curtain. It's arguably the best Hercule Poirot book and it requires intensive reading on the previous books to appreciate how that ending is the absolute climax of Poirot's career as well as his character. It deepens the character in a way that all previous books lead to this moment of fulfilment and tragedy, the absolute value and paradox of justice, the torment and sin, yet the self-realization and glory of Poirot. Poirot's ending is irreplaceable and there is no better way to conclude his life in such a highlighted moment.
ACD has little luck with his lazy plots of Moriarty in the same attempts to finish Holmes off. After a long batter between ACD and SH fans and capitalism, the story carried on, and the true ending of Holmes turned out, yet again, somewhat an anticlimax, even bizarrely so in a way that it becomes nonsensical. Poor Watson has long been under scrutiny for being an unreliable narrator (like, somehow his devoted wife got his first name wrong. Curious indeed), and Holmes' account is not doing any better. Even if we leave all that literature analysis alone, just from a fanfiction point of view, it's not hard to remove all the narratives about how they end up not seeing each other often but still leave the core stories intact. The ending of their tragic relationship is forced upon them by a few additional paragraphs which granted no importance to the character development or mystery or plots whatsoever.
But back to Poirot, Curtain relies on such a premise that nobody truly knows Poirot's current state. Not Vera, not Miss Lemon or his loyal valet George, not even Hastings, the man to whom his trust extends to the time beyond his death. Poirot is utterly alone, and the aloneness is the key to the final mystery. At the end, his is all alone to face the ultimate choice and he braves it with the stake of his own life. Hastings only learns about the truth when it's all over. The last case of Poirot is solve by him all alone.
As great as Curtain is, it leaves no room for further interpretation or bending around or...any sort of fanfiction maneuver. The only thing to do is to either accept the eventual aloneness of Poirot, or to ignore/alternate Curtain all together, thus diminish the depth of Poirot's character. This assertion applies to any shipping, including the canon Poirot/Rossakoff. At the end of The Labours of Hercules, it hints that Poirot could have a chance with Vera Rossakoff, but in Curtain the only sensible conclusion is that their relationship did not work out. In Poirot TV show series, their relationship is portrayed as a heart-breaking tragedy, and I think it matches the ending of Poirot perfectly.
I always say that Poirot is such a loving, tender soul yet his love life is always turbulent and tragic. All the people he is interested in turn out either criminals or leaving him--and, well, almost criminal, but on which account Poirot himself is no better either.
Sherlock Holmes, on the other hand, is a lucky bastard who just gets the true love with no string attached. Of course he is no robot or heartless, but his social skill is questionable and he is, canon-wise, asexual and aromantic, somewhat aversive to all social connections. Yet he has Watson. the unconditional love/friendship, the ultimate bond that nothing can undermine. Even with ACD being so painstakingly to separate them, the room for alternative narration is so abundant that the creator's hinderance becomes some kind of delightful challenge for future writers rather than problems. I mean, we can all agree that ACD is a master of breaking his own world-building even though he took the effort to make it realistic; after all, ACD himself relinquished the seriousness of lore-keeping in Empty House. If he is allowed to break his lore, surely anyone else could. And ACD recognized this freedom too--"You may marry him, murder him, or do anything you like to him”. Bless this noble soul; we have his permission for eternity.
As a habitual fanfiction writer, it naturally comes to a (personally) inherent paradox of fanfork: it thrives on the imperfection of the original work.
By "imperfection", I don't mean artistic flaws of the works (though it could be); I mean the aspects that are ignored or otherwise not under the spotlight of the original work. In the context of fanfictions, mostly relationships.
Again, I must stress that it's pure personal. I know a lot of romance/relationship focus works have a huge fanbase devoted into it's already well developed romance perspective. But I almost never got attracted into those fandoms. I find it limiting, not enough room for me to explore and insert my own ideas and creativities. I believe, however, that I am not alone feeling this way. A lot of others may have similar experience that they somehow inserted part of themselves or their own feelings and understandings into a fandom/ship/character/etc. that part of their identity belongs to, or extends from it.
(We all agree this discourse has nothing to do with copyright and profit and the like, I assume, but just to make it clear here. )
In fandom and fanworks, there is a sense of belonging, and more importantly, ownership. The aspects that the original work creator discarded are treasured by fans; the nook and crannies not explored in the canon is the kingdom of fan-creators. There is a space of creativity, of personal expression, of standing on the shoulder of giant (or just normal persons, but a higher ground nevertheless) and overlook for the horizon. In a fictional work one may find a language of self-expression they have a hard time to find on their own, and they can start from there. It's the beauty of fandoms.
The original creators assert the first and foremost ownership. They decide the trend, the structure, the mood, the back and forth. And it comes the fanworks. But there is always space of negotiation, some small and some large. This kind of flexibility creates a harmony as well as a tension, thus the love and conflict between the fans and the creators.
The conflicts stem from many things, one of which is when the creators claim an aspect (again, mostly, relationship, especially romantic ones) of the original work.
That's why I realize why I am more into the non-romantic works more than romantic ones. And that's how a work can be homophobically gay, even worse, intentionally so.
When the creators acknowledge an pervious ignored aspect of their work, they claim it and define it. They take the ownership rather than leave the gray area to the fans. It is nice to be comprehensive, yet it could be dangerous especially if they did not have the best intention/interest of others in their mind (or really it doesn't matter what their intention is at this point).
Without specify the name (but y'all know what I'm talking about) of the work, there is the worst offender that I have off the top of my head: after over a decade they have the characters confess their love right the minute before the ultimate death.
It's the worst kind of acknowledgement of a relationship. It attempts (inadvertently or not or something in between) to take away the ownership of the fanworks and the fan community on these characters and claim that "I hereby assert my ownership of their relationship and deny anything you have bestowed". It is not like a legal statement to enforce with the backup of real power or anything, but at this point the original creator announced their point clear and loud. It's a way to cancel out anything that previously attached to the work from their point of view yet still present as "supportive" to a said relationship. It's utterly destructive in both artistic expression of such character relationship and a social equality point of view. It's, in a way, as bad as, if not worse than, "gay characters must die" in old-school homophobic works.
(Of course the fans can still stand against such attempts and create their own fanworks based on them. I mean, nothing stops individuals from expressing themselves from certain medium anyways.)
In a work that designed to acknowledge and/or focus on the relationship of characters, it circles back to the issue of how the story is structured and how well it is written. I personally find a perfect written story leaves no space for my personal interpretation and expression, so I appreciate it and move on. It's always some ambiguity gives inspiration and life to my personal creation based on someone else's work.
Thus, once a creator shifts their focus on their work, there bound to be a conflict. An example is Good Omens 2. Personally it is a weird case that the creator themselves attempts to make a fanwork on their own work that originally focused on something else totally different. I know it sounds crazy but that's exactly where the controversial comes from--if a fanfiction writer writes something impressive you either hate it to the gut or love it to to bones, or are forced to ignore it, one way or another. When the creator themselves claim an aspect of an artistic work, the conflict with the audience is inevitable. In the example of GO2, the ending suddenly limits all the possibilities of the relationship of the characters into that single moment, the climax at the end of the show. It's almost like forming a black hole that all timelines collapse into one singularity. For the people who love this moment it is the best thing they can expect for this show, but for the ones who'd already claimed an ownership and/or an identification in alternative expression of this show, it's the ultimate disaster.
(Needless to say [but somehow still necessary], I am talking from a standpoint of artistic appreciation and personal tastes. Anyone who disapproves the ending of GO S2 because of homophobia, they can go fuck themselves with a cactus for all I care.)
As for the works that are designed for characters relationships from the very beginning, it's much simpler and solely relies on how the relationship is portraited. Again the more marvelous and airtight the structure is, the less room it leaves to the fanworks. In this way I think OFMD kind of maintains such a balance. It's not within my personal taste because how the confession comes kind of lack of tension, but exactly because the relationship development can be altered, and the climax not limited to the moment of confession, there followes much more room to be explored by other fan-creators. I personally found it not intense enough, but as I said earlier, the imperfection is the source of fanworks inspiration, a motivation to make it perfect.
But on another note, for me and a lot of fan creators like me, a more emotional intense expression is more likely to inspire, albeit limiting. To be honest, there is no universal law but just how a person perceives certain work and how much room the said person finds in it.
