Are all minerals considered rocks? Are things like obsidian considered rocks? What are tektites? I guess I'm asking: what is the most general term I can use to accurately include all of these thingamajigs?

This is what my geologist cousin said:

Rocks are technically made up of minerals. And I guess some rocks can be almost entirely one mineral, like a sandstone made of only quartz sand, but it's called a sandstone because of it's texture.

Obsidian is a rock. Made up of mafic minerals with some silica minerals. It also has a unique texture of being like glass. So when you think of different types of rocks they usually have a certain texture that qualifies them as that rock. So like a granite is made of K feldspar, quartz, and plagioclase and the texture is medium-coarse grained crystals, but a rhyolite is composed of the same minerals but it is fine grained so you can't see the crystals as easily with the naked eye.

Tektites are a type of meteorite or ejecta from volcanos, they usually look like year drops or rain drops because they form in the air so make the same shape as water would

Also, with obsidian, it's a very fine grained 'cryptocrystalline' texture because it's usually formed by lava quenching real fast in water which makes it so there's no time for crystals to grow. If the same composition of lava was to cool slower the crystals grow bigger and you'd be left with something like a basalt

So I guess the short answer is the definition of a rock (or what I can remember): a mix of certain minerals with a certain texture that have formed in a certain way. So by formation I mean like a sedimentary rock vs a igneous vs a metamorphic. And that you can usually tell by the texture and minerals in it
