There are too many people who, upon encountering a woman character with too many specific traits and flaws established, lose the ability to identify with them and turn to secondary, less active, less developed characters that they can more easily project into.
As in, they'll reframe the whole story in their head and insist the true protagonist is a secondary or tertiary character. That the original protagonist is a 'Mary Sue' not worth regard. And it's weird because so often women characters are also criticized and labelled as Mary Sue's for the opposite reason as well.
I do not mean said secondary/tertiary character is bad or uninteresting. I simply mean it's inaccurate to frame them as the protagonist, and I do often see said characters proclaimed to have traits they don't possess (often traits taken from the protagonist).
It's a phenomenon not restricted to women, but I have noticed it's more common with women. For some reason they rarely do this to the men of the story. And I feel like there's some internalized misogyny in there.
I see it on both the audience end and occasionally even the writer's end. *cough* The Vampire Diaries *cough*. For now, I'll call it the Trapped in a Island with Josh Hutcherson phenomenon where Jenny Nicholson points out that the author wrote a self-insert, got jealous of the self-insert when she took on too much of a life of her own, and proceeded to write a new self-insert to push the old one aside.
Some examples:
Rhaenyra → Alicent, Helaena, and occasionally Baela & Rhaena (might also be some ageism in there too)
Arya & Dany → Sansa, the Dead Ladies Club, Brienne on occasion
Elena Gilbert (TVD) → Caroline Forbes
Those are the most blatant examples, but I swear this phenomenon is EVERYWHERE.
Anyways, I'm looking for more specific examples so I can better look into it. If you can think of another one, do me a favour and drop it below!

10. last movie you watched?
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) !!! I have been following the production of that film since January of this year (I love Josh Hutcherson.) honestly when i'm doing fuck all is the best time for my brain to create things. high fever brought me the idea for revisionist history as it currently is, and having this cold now (one month later) has me co-writing a mad men au 🤠 and finishing a marcus pike oneshot. not getting any scripts done for class but whatever lol
19. describe your editing process
honestly...bad. ok well no. let's go with light. lighter than it should probably be. I edit in chunks as I write, then I'll leave it and specifically go back in to edit. Then I'll make some more tweaks and although I know it isn't perfect, I post and then usually ~the next day-ish I go into the post (on ao3 or Tumblr) and find any typos once again.
20. music, ambient noise, or silence when writing?
music always unless it's a specific scene that I can pull up specific youtube soundscapes for ...like a zombie apocalypse for example *cough*. anyway— the world tipped on its side and subsequent chapters are named after songs/lyrics, music heavily influences what I write and how I write it. with my place on the spectrum, it's really hard to function without music - it's kind of an integral part of my existence at this point. that's why my headphones look like shit 😭

same twitter newsboy anon again! you brought up so many great points, forgive me for ranting but i've been feeling insane over there.
"What does calling out J have to do with T?" is so funny because they brought up T themselves. Yes, the account that posted the tweet going "y'all pander to your faves' boyfriends just to get attention" does post zeglyth, but T wasn't mentioned at all. It's funny that he's living rent free in their heads, because why are you shooting yourself in the foot and bringing him up, knowing that its a case of hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby? When just a few hours ago the screenshots of him defending her went viral AGAIN.
Calling her “my best friend” she’s not your best friend. Oh my god you finally said it! Not saying names but the person who posts that under every single R related post was sort of surprising/cute(??) when I first saw it, but weirder the more I think about it. It's not a once in a while joke, it's every single post. And of course R picked up on it (how could she not) and she acknowledged it by joking "you're not that person" to the other people who began copying it, so now they're all going to do it more!
(Side note but that person who started this was under J's congrats post back in 2021, so they've obviously been part of this for a long time. And their most recent post is "if you are not me and you've said rachel zegler my best friend i have your address and i'm serious" which just shows that it isn't about expressing love towards R, it's about getting her attention. Some strange concept of exclusivity.)
And there was a hilarious interaction between an R+ J defender and a confused commenter. The defender said "some of you are really weird about zegvera and you're disrespecting R". The commenter went "wait who are we talking about? josh hutcherson? rivera? OH HER CURRENT BOYFRIEND?" and the defender replied all excited "YES" but then the commenter went "isn't he in trouble with everyone because he's way older than her" and the defender just stopped replying LMAO.
I don't want to end this on a bad note but this wave of drama is getting more interactions than past iterations (at least from what i've seen), so I'm legitimately considering this affecting whatever R might or might not have done for T's birthday. It will probably depend on her mood that day (whether she fought with J recently or not lmao) but I definitely feel like she might hold back/not post. I am also pissed at the thought of that.
They’re very intimidated by T / Zeglyth. And they use T’s age to justify liking R and J. The age gap between R and J isn’t the problem lol, it’s the age when they met. It doesn’t click in their brains.
The crazy part of “my best friend R” is a lot of those people hated her last year. They were apart of the hate train and now are begging for attention from her.
R being so actively online has made people think she’s actually their friend. It’s quite sad how possessive and obsessed they are to get her attention.

A witch born to another witch, the same cold that was born in Henry’s chest was the very same that killed his mother, Penelope Arnold. Raised by a single father in Penshurst, Kent, the rural town was out of the way by most supernatural standards. Sickly from birth, Henry wasn’t expected to make it through his infancy but by some miracle the boy recovered enough to make it into childhood adolescence. Weaker than most, Henry had to watch while his friends played, put to work under the tutelage of his watchmaker father instead. Too frail to run with the other boys, the persistent cough came and went, most days were good but some left him feeble and bedridden. A mark of a plagued thing, families held their own healthy children close when he and his father passed on the street - as if Henry’s misfortune might brush against them somehow.
John Arnold, Henry’s father, was always an introverted man. Skittish in his own way. In the years that followed his son’s birth and his wife’s passing, he only drew into himself and his work more. He spoke less and less as he turned more into his work and only really paid attention to Henry when the boy did the same. He’d watch his father, hand him his instruments, ask him questions - anything to try and get the other to notice him. As John aged his hands began to shake, they’d tremble and quiver and the delicate work that went into his craft would become too difficult for him. So, eventually Henry would be his hands. On his good days he would spend them at his father’s workbench, the older man hunched over his shoulder as he would watch his son’s work before retiring in the early evening to rest.
By the time Seth arrived, Henry was an adult, his father had passed and the young man had taken over the shop. The vampire introduced himself as someone who’d known Henry’s mother, while the witch was born with a supernatural sense, Henry had grown up relatively untrained beyond the few spell books that Penelope had left behind. Daylight rings, poultices, basic magical protection, that precious lifeblood that flowed through Henry’s veins, it was easy for the vampire to get what he wanted. Compulsion and control that went alongside the usefulness of someone that was clearly bright and observant. Talent that was wasting away in a rural countryside, sheltered from the world outside for fear that a strong wind might blow him down.
Henry got sick, this time perilously so. On his deathbed Seth found him, turned him, and left for Henry one of the rings that Penelope had made many years prior. Whatever arcane power had flowed through the veins of the Arnold line died with Henry that night, and with it, the vampire abandoned the name that he’d carried for so many years. No longer weak or sickly, Henry awoke and felt as though he’d been completely reborn. The world was open to him, and Henry abandoned the life he’d been born into entirely. Wolfgang was the name he took on instead but without proper instruction or guidance, all Wolfgang did was tear through the home where he’d been raised. The families that had scorned him, the children that he’d grown up with that had laughed at him. Bloodlust and violence replaced the ichor that once pumped through his heart and Wolfgang lavished the opportunity to turn into the sort of creature that was feared rather than scorned.
The actions of the former invalid didn’t go unnoticed, he burned his way through the countryside as he fell in with a like-minded few. Vampires, as it turned out, were inherently territorial and when he trespassed into the domain of one in particular Wolfgang was very nearly turned away. Gavyn was of his bloodline, much older, and much more skilled: he taught Wolfgang the beginnings of control, but also how to use his power effectively and the limitations that were set upon it. Where Wolfgang’s real father had always been emotionally absent, Gavyn was always present, watching and supporting - he had ambition and that was something that Wolfgang gladly threw himself behind. Whatever laws that the magisterium had put in place were taught to him by Gavyn, if only so Wolfgang could learn how to break them.
Compulsion was something that Wolfgang came to revel in, the moral implications of forcing people to do what you wanted were obvious but what better way to protect yourself than to enthral an entire town? When marshals came sniffing around he’d move on, when hunters showed up, he’d pack up. Somewhere further away, another place, another city to start over in. The vampire always had the same pattern, he would leave and go looking for his sire, end up disappointed then come back to Gavyn and his progeny. This would repeat over and over again until eventually when Wolfgang came back to Scotland it was for Gavyn’s funeral. One of Gavyn’s true progeny, Jamie, ended up in Rome where a number of vampires were gathering, so Wolfgang figured if he was going to find Seth then maybe it would be there.
