✰ you recall how you met jinwoo ✰

⇾ spoiler alert for the side story ⇽

it’s look yesterday that you’ve met jinwoo.

he first approached you during lunch at school, saying that he needed to talk with you after classes and that easily made you blush.

sung jinwo, the prettiest and smart boy in the school, asked you to stay after classes ended to talk? you are living the dream that almost every girl and boy wishes to become reality, yet something feels so weirdly about him. definitely isn’t about him actually, but rather how familiar his touch is.

the gentleness when he holder your hand when speaking made you feel like part of royalty, the way his eyes shaped when looking at you was almost like he was staring into an immense treasure. those felt so familiar, but what did actually catch you in fully surprise during that little conversation in the hall is the fact he kissed you in front of anyone who was passing by.

everyone stared at both of you. whispering about how lucky you are to being dating the most desirable, coolest, smart and handsome guy of the entire school. the whole situation made you want to vanish of existence and yet, you went to met him after classes just like he asked that moment.

inside the teacher’s office, he spoken words that you never believed that would hear from someone. jinwoo said words that not only made you feel special for the first time, but also made your heart beat way faster than the normal and your cheeks become redder was he slowly approached you. he kissed you that afternoon, after you accepted his feelings and promised for stay together til the end of time.

that was years ago and now you are married to him, have a small baby boy with him and share a immense house together. still, you can’t believe that you marry jinwoo, of all of the people in the world, he choose you to be with him. what a story.

“ everything alright?” he look over the couch, catching you and suho drawing with crayon all over the floor. his gray eyes aren’t leave this view anytime soon.

you nodded to your husband, too busy playing with suho as he draws and explain all of his imaginary friends that father show him a few days ago. the little sketches resemble a gigantic ant and others creature that you can’t figure out, probably suho has a gray imagination for creating those.

when done with his art, suho showed you the final product as he smiles, showcasing that he recently lost his two front teeth from a small accident a few week earlier. he continued to talk about the world he visit with father and the many creatures living there who all are shadows that obey father and you.

“ If they obey you, then dad must be someone important!” even tired, you still excited to learn everything about the little world that suho created. you are going to invest this kid into art classes one day. “ right?”

suho nodded to your words, too busy to speak as he return to draw once again, leaving to his father to answer you.

“ You’re right.” a kiss is planted on your lips, gaining him a small smile on the face. “ I am someone important there, but so you are.”

he kissed you once again before making you resting your head on his shoulder, both of you watching suho drawing in silence, at least on your case. jinwoo and suho are listening to the shadows rumbling about you unstoppable.

“they are truly someone perfect for our monarch!”

“ our monarch would be lost without them in his life!”

“ we should take them for a surprise visit and show them the statue we made on their honor!”

jinwoo hopes for a day that you will have to hear the constant voices of his shadow along him and suho, he doesn’t know when do it so, but he hopes that you will enjoy having someone to talk with during his work hours.

1. Harrowhark Nonagesimus - The Locked Tomb Trilogy

Harrow has true scrungly wet cat energy. I want to put her in one of those little backpacks with a window and carry her around in it for her enrichment. She's an absolute bitch. She is a pathetic little meow meow. She lobotomized herself to save the soul of the woman she refuses to admit she's in love with. She tried to kill a saint with soup made from her own bone marrow. She is a war crime. I like her so much!

2. Magneto - X-Men

He is the platonic ideal of my favorite trope, "Does all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Magneto has gone through the polar opposite of villain decay. The longer he exists, the longer the universe has to prove him increasingly correct on most things. All I can really say is, "Magneto was right."

3. Wei Wuxian - Mo Dao Zu Shi

Truly the most blorbo of all time. Are you also an ADHD burned out gifted and talented submissive brat with a praise kink? Boy howdy, do I have a character that you are going to imprint on like a baby goose! Wei Wuxian also has a hearty dose of, "Does all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Also like who multiclasses in wizard (specifically necromancer) and bard? This fucking guy apparently.

4. Hythlodaeus - Final Fantasy 14

I am so normal about Hythlodaeus, I made an entire AU around him. That is a reasonable thing to do about a character that you like a normal amount, right? The idealized lost love, trapped in amber, untouchable but also incorruptible by the sands of time that keep eroding the edges of your soul. And then they gave him lavender dead anime mom hair!

5. Varric Tethras - Dragon Age

I literally have a semi-viral post about how much this character has consumed my thoughts. Rule Number 1 of Dragon Age: Varric lies. He's a charming scoundrel. He's loyal to a fault. He knows everything worth knowing about Kirkwall. And he's a dirty fucking liar. The only reason Varric isn't romanceable in DA2 is that no other romantic interest would get any attention if Varric was on the table. I desire him carnally.

6. Temeraire - Temeraire

My most precious and smartest boy! I adore Temeraire so much. Swear to god, I did not read the Temeraire books before creating Orion as a character, but the parallels are so strong, you would think I had! He's a bookworm, a little awkward but full of opinions, and he has an unwavering moral compass. Temeraire will forever be one of my favorite dragon characters.

7. Jaina Solo - Star Wars Legends

I will never forget what Disney took from me. As a weird, nerdy girl who was also kind of a guy growing up, Jaina meant so much to me. She was an active participant in the stories she was in. She was an ace pilot, a skilled mechanic, and a Jedi to boot. She had her dad's sense of humor and her mom's moral certainty. I thought she was the coolest. Still do.

8. Ansur - Baldur's Gate 3

Ansur! My beloved! If you had told me that the character I would be most obsessed with from BG3 would be an undead bronze dragon who you don't even know about until the third act -- actually, no that checks out. He was so in love, and so loyal, and so bitter at Balduron for embracing his corruption! And that reveal! 9. Viktor - Arcane

Listen, as a disabled, obsessive nerd with too much to do and not enough time to do it all in, Viktor is my gender. I love just about everything about Arcane, but Viktor's storyline is my favorite part. I, for one, am very excited to watch his fall from grace and further corruption. I have already forgiven all of his atrocities. I do not care. He's babygirl.

10. Clark Kent - DC

You thought I was going to say Jason or Dick for a DC character didn't you? (Or even Roy!) Those would all have been very reasonable expectations. I am pretty obsessed with all of them. However, Clark Kent is a very special character to me, and yes I specifically am focusing on the Clark persona and not the Supes persona. Yeah, they are ultimately the same guy, but I much prefer Superman stories grounded in his Clark Kent identity. Superman is at his best when he is attached to the mundane world by things like his job, his family, and his love for Lois. (Lois/Clark is the ultimate het ship. I will not be taking questions on this. It just is.) Clark is essentially a demigod, and yet he chooses to spend his time loving people and living as one of them, and I think that's really fucking cool.

whilst cid is a confirmed girl dad what type of dad do we think the other lads are, i have some ideas and i’m curious to how others think:

-clive: born to also be a girl dad but he has one son then 2 daughters with said son somehow inheriting even more protective big brother genes. his daughters probably think he’s super cool as a shield and try to become some of rosaria’s first female shields. the son probably ends up being more the scholar type by chance, the “i told you so” older brother.

-joshua: truly versatile but i think the universe would end up giving him a single boy that has all of his Bratty Younger Brother genes but More. it’s payback tenfold for the years jote and clive had to endure of him refusing to stay in bed whilst sick and having to attempt to father an even more stubborn version of himself. i also think he should have a kid that LOVES carrots like they eat it by the shovel-full

-dion: boy dad through and through. raises like 3 completely chivalrous fairy tail prince sons and has one 4th son who is such a rogue and trouble maker than he balances out his 3 brother’s personalities by himself. they’re also his biggest supporters, think he’s the coolest dragon to ever exist. probably would end up with one of them succeeding harpocrates and another being very artistic.

-barnabas: either no kids or a single child but he doesn’t act different based on the kids sex/gender. possibly adopted? most likely to adopt, i think he values an innate sense of discipline for the kid’s self benefit. but he seems like the type of king that raises a queen so well that waloed is also historically called a queendom during her reign. as long as he can teach them swordsmanship he’s chill

-hugo: bald and childless <3 he would only have kids with benne but she’s not fucking doing that, she knows medieval childbirth statistics.

gav: like 9 kids. like so many. he probably also adopts half the hideaway’s kids. they all develop his accent even if they’re adopted and it’s like hearing a warbling nest of birds. probably the most chill dad ever like they all say their secrets with such security he’s like in on all the gossip of their generation. he just comes back to the hideaway with a new kid calling him dad

Oh my god anon you’re so right for most of these, you basically did my job so lemme just add a couple ideas to compliment yours

Clive- absolutely a girl dad, and his one son becomes extremely protective of them just like he was to Joshua. He’s also the voice of reason between the three because his girls also inherited his sense of bravery, and they tend to get into antics a lot. Very active and energetic while big bro is more calm and collected (except when his sisters are in trouble, and it’s there we see that famous rosfield anger)

Joshua- a singular boy that makes his father’s life much more difficult than it needs to be (I wonder where he inherited that from.) He’s also very energetic, and is more than likely the mastermind of whatever scheme he and his two cousins get into. Too curious for his own good, just like his father, and absorbs knowledge like a sponge even if the methods used to obtain that knowledge are a bit orthodox. Keep an eye on him at all times, and if you hear silence from him, he’s definitely doing something.

Dion- literal Disney princes, the pinnacle of chivalry and honor, it’s as if you plucked them from a fairytale. He saw the man his father grew up to be and wanted them to be better, and have a better childhood than he did. Even when his fourth turns out to be a bit of a rebel you can still see that Lesage honor shining through and through, albeit in his own special way. While his first three sons might stop a bully by talking him down the fourth would sooner shut him up by breaking his jaw, for example. (He was harassing a poor student, he couldn’t just stand by!)

Surprisingly enough his fourth son is incredibly smart, top marks in all his classes effortlessly, if only he could get a rein on that temper.

Barnabas- he’s most likely to adopt, but he would love that child no less than his own flesh and blood. Firm but fair, he’d raise them to be strong, and to never take anything from anyone, ever. At the same time he enjoys that his child does not have that same bloodlust in their eyes that he did when he was their age. He doesn’t say his emotions outwardly, but rather expresses them with quality time, such as training or bringing them to royal meetings.

Hugo- childless lmao, even if he wasn’t obsessed with benedikta his ego wouldn’t allow him to take just one woman as his bride, and I highly doubt he’d be a good father. If he did have a child they’d be more likely to run away once they’re a teenager

Gav- oh sweet Gav, his nickname is the daycare with how many children he raises on a daily basis. Half of them aren’t even his, and does it really matter? He loves having a big family, it’s more entertaining that way.

Okay, this is extremely exciting news. I have worked on this fanfiction for nearly a month (which is too long for me already lol) and it is finally done, with chapter 1 uploaded and chapter 2 nearly finished! You can read it here on AO3. The New Fate of Paradise - GDDanceFloor

Paradise was that one place shapes of many sizes and colors from far away wished to belong to one day. From the rolling hills, to the trees that stuck up from the ground, the sun that blessed the inhabitants with the beauty of its rays, it was truly fitting to its name. Nowadays, after an unfortunate event harmed Paradise and there was no choice but to rebuild after such, there were large, sky-high skyscrapers, some hosting homes for all sorts of families of Shapes, some for business, and some for stores. Music was always playing regardless of the location, and even if the urban area was constantly bustling with population, most residents of Paradise City loved being part of it.

The city surrounded one park that hosted a tree — a holy tree, as some would say, that shimmered a blue color brightly night and day and was believed to be the life force of Paradise as a whole, as well as the source of sheer ultimate power that had to be protected, which, in the event a Shape went rogue and decided to consume all the power for its own, it would create mass anguish for all of Shapekind and lead to utter annihilation of Purity, making it impossible to stop the evil. This beautiful thing was the Tree of Life. It bore many different kinds of properties that affected a Shape's body or mind, whether for purity or corruption, depending on their heart's truth.

Well, if regular Shapes were powerless against such perpetrators, who were the ones behind guarding the Tree, you may ask?

Four guardians, created by the Tree of Life after the devastation, were responsible and destined for keeping such a land safe from the evils that, to legend and rumor, roamed the outskirts of it, alert as ever from dawn to dusk to ward off threats. Though nothing ever happened, and they wished it'd stay that way forever, they continued to stay on guard regardless.

It'd only been a decade and two years since they'd been born, still growing and learning about the world around them, but even if their existence was still new, the fact that the legend of the Guardians born ready to defend even came true was considered a miracle by all Shapes, regardless of opinion or belief.

The young aforementioned heroes were known as followed:

Cyan, a tomboyish girl with light blue wavy hair to her shoulders and a cyan hue to her eyes, the very way she got her name, Tria, an adventurous boy with shaggy blonde hair and golden eyes, Penta, the straightforward and introverted one of the four who bore deep pine green hair twirled into two pentagon-shaped braids at the back of her head, and finally, Orange, though more on the dorkier side, he still was a sweetheart with his bright orange eyes and curly peach-tinted hair. These four were awfully powerful despite their smaller size, considerably much smaller than any Shape for that matter, but being blessed by the Tree at birth was nothing more than beautiful and lovely, as being chosen by something so important to protect it was nothing shy of special. Now, an ordinary owner of a small cafe (which also happened to be her home) near the center of their land was Cube, a sweet, kind girl with a bit of a slouch to her posture and a bit wider at her sides, with eyes that probably needed some kind of glasses since she’d bump into things or knock stuff over frequently. Her hair was cut into a short neck-length bob, it being a pale pastel blue color, and her dark eyes often were low-lidded, only adding to her peaceful disposition. Around her neck was a light blue scarf, underneath that would be a dull slate tinted coat covering a minty teal dress and black leggings. She was a close friend of the beloved Guardians, spending countless mornings and evenings with them with breakfasts and teas prepared by her. They'd known Cube since the festival years ago that celebrated their birth, when Cyan took note of a child that was her age and was the only one there without a parent or caretaker, and since then, the Guardians had kept watch over her and the Tree until Cube was old enough to be by herself. It was truly an unbreakable friendship, that’s why neither one of them took it for granted. Even if training had begun to double down with the team and they recently had less time together, the moments they shared were valued more than the quantity of them.

GameGirl31 ~ Dr. Mario

It's Dr. Mario time. We all know it. We've all played it (even if you don't remember how or why). We all are a little more than confused by its existence.

Let me briefly tell my story with Dr. Mario. When I was just a girl—at a time where my only video games were whatever random N64 and PS1 games my parents owned—I really looked forward to the occasional visit to my gamer aunt and uncle's house. Having extended family who are into video games is just the coolest feeling as a child, when all other grown-ups do only boring stuff like reading and fishing trips. During one fateful day out with my aunt, I was gifted my very own Nintendo DS Lite—the first console I felt was truly mine. An amazing feature of my silver DS, I would come to find, was backwards compatibility with GameBoy Advance games! And one of the first games I received to test it out was a little combo cartridge called Dr. Mario & Puzzle League

I'll be blunt here: I hated Dr. Mario. Its companion, Puzzle League, was (excuse my pun) leagues better, offering tons of single player puzzles, customization options, and a catchy as hell soundtrack—in addition to its multiplayer connectivity! Dr. Mario, sadly, only contained a couple of variations on endless mode; not much fun to be had for a child with no link cable to play with friends. Dr. Mario seemed too... simple. Only 3 colors? All you do is clear viruses? Nah, I was above this game.

And that was the last time I ever played Dr. Mario.

UNTIL NOW.

~Earning my PhD~

I began playing this game with the standard GameGirl procedure; playing a few rounds to get accustomed to the new environment, checking out the manual, conducting a small amount of personal research, and then setting goals to beat the game. The manual offered the usual gallery of fun official art and basic tutorial, but it didn't contain anything I didn't already know. That is, except one interesting detail that caught my attention.

Let me ask you a question that was at the forefront of my mind at this time: how do I "beat" Dr. Mario? An endless, arcade-style puzzle game with no story? The manual, Dr. Mario himself, had the answer.

Pay special attention to the second bullet point. I'll see "something special?" It's so ambiguous yet so enticing, and with such a difficult condition to discover whatever it was, I couldn't hold myself back. I knew that my destiny was to complete the game on the highest difficulty on the highest speed setting.

To do this, I put about 10 hours of work into practicing this game; matching colors, creating combos, managing junk pills, refining my reflexes, always looking at the next piece coming up, and then the one after that. I learned some very valuable techniques for getting far in this game. Always having at least one column available with each of the three colors is extremely helpful when you're given a pill (or, when you're unlucky, three or four in a row) of a color that simply does not match the current trouble virus. You must put care into placing each and every pill. You must be cunning to attack viruses from above, below, from the sides, or even a falling combo. You must be dexterous on the higher speeds, shifting pills across the bottle and rotating it twice in less than a second.

When I finally accomplished my first milestone, I was met with a scene I'd never witnessed before. A tranquil, wide open ocean floor...

The viruses sit there, watching the occasional sea life drift by. The sea appears so lonely...

~Dr. Mario master~

Yes, my goals for this game primarily entailed clearing levels at the highest difficulty. Specifically, I considered the game "beaten" if I cleared MED speed levels 5, 10, 15, and 20, and I considered it "100% completed" if I cleared HI speed levels 5, 10, 15, and 20. But what about the actual game? Was it fun? Worth becoming so competent at playing?

Unsurprisingly, this is the simplest and shortest GB title yet. I placed it here in the challenge as sort of a break from larger adventures, after all. The visuals are quite simple; beyond the initial gag of Mario dressed up in a lab coat, there isn't much to look at. The viruses do a funny little dance at the bottom of the screen, then get knocked over and blipped out of existence as you clear them. The game has a total of 6 unique songs: one for mode select, the iconic Fever and Chill that you may choose for gameplay, jingles for winning in multiplayer or setting up a combo of four or more, and then a special song for the special something after clearing one of the four MED or HI speed levels. The songs will easily get stuck in your head, and the special song was well worth earning each time I arrived at the bottom of the infested sea. The blips and bloops of gameplay will sometimes match up PERFECTLY with the gameplay themes; its like the composition is playing together with you, as well as being solid tunes that have been hummed by fans and remade by Nintendo for decades to come. They did a good job with the sound design, overall!

I guess my biggest gripe is... the overall concept of Dr. Mario? I still find it a bit too simple, even after all this time. There aren't many reasons to come back to it, if you aren't attempting the insane feat of 100% completion. The main draw of this game is the multiplayer and hoping that the satisfying falling-block match-4 formula keeps players hooked long enough to keep coming back when bored. But sadly, there isn't much versatility with the mechanics. Where other puzzle games contain a higher variety of pieces (Tetris), or greater combo opportunity (Puyo Puyo), or slicker visuals (Meteos), or some other wacky gimmick to keep you continuously exploring (Meteos again)... Dr. Mario falls short of a cure-all for boredom.

For the sake of this challenge, I did try out the multiplayer with a friend! A very cool feature of the NSO retro games is being able to connect with friends online, and play as if you were sitting across from each other with a link cable! In this game, you and your competitor (did you know that's what COM stands for? Competitor? Not "computer," as I always thought) race to clear the bottle of viruses before the other. The multiplayer does contain some unique visuals, including an indicator for how many remaining viruses your competitor needs to clear or how many wins you've accumulated (best three out of five).

Shoutouts to @br00f for playing with me! She beat me in a best of five that went all the way to game 5... and I have to call her Dr. Broof from now on...

~Conclusion~

In a vacuum, Dr. Mario is a well-made, fun, fast-paced puzzle game with some cool cutscenes and music to discover if you become skilled enough. Compared to other puzzle games, I find it a bit lacking in single-player content. I also think that the concept is a bit bare-bones, especially in this first iteration. Not much to accomplish beyond basic combos and managing three colors; it's almost too simple even for a casual player (as we witnessed in the Dr. Mario & Puzzle League anecdote).

Granted, I've never played the newer iterations of Dr. Mario. Maybe they've come up with more ways to shake up the formula? I won't be pursuing it anytime soon, I'm afraid; Dr. Mario just isn't for me. I can acknowledge it as a very important and solid GB title, worthy of being a member of the NSO library. That's about it.

Recommend? Sure, try it. It's probably as good as any other version of Dr. Mario

Oh, and I did manage to 100% complete the game! Check it out!

dylan duke 100% had a school boy crush on sissy when he first met her back in luke and his freshman year of high school. but it was also him just being young and thinking she was the coolest girl to ever exist. the crush passed pretty quick once he realized he didn’t actually like her he just hadn’t had *too* much experience with girls.

but no one else has truly had romantic feelings for her! her and trevor have been together for around 5 years, and so no one really would have had the chance to.

Web Girls

I've always been fascinated by girls on the internet. There's something about the vulnerability of a girl in her room that feels uncomfortably familiar to me. Something about that privacy, something within that intimate space, that curates an authenticity that's rare to find in the interwebs. Before "The Influencer" there were bloggers. I would like to take the space to honor them here. :)

Tavi Gevinson- Style Rookie.

This may be the Tavi most know and love and know (The youngster style icon turned Gossip Girl actress extraordinaire)

But this is the Tavi I am talking about:

Style Rookie was like a spiritual awakening for me in fashion format. When I first saw Tavi I was truly awestruck and frozen in inspiration panic. There was this little create going around runway to runway, rubbing elbows with fashion LEGENDS.. devouring fashion at a pace only a fellow fashion beast could recognize. This wasn't just a hobby, this was PASSION in physical form. Her posts on styler rookie, later turning into Rookie Mag- an online magazine- were a cultural shift for every fashion lover and style pusher in the same facility. What a delight it was to grow up watching this icon's origin story develop.

Molly Soda- Digital Artist

If Enya Umanzor had a troubled big sister who left the day after graduation because of mommy issues and the curiosity to find unlocked potential, it would be Molly Soda.

If "She's so real for that" or "She's just like me fr" was a person- it would be Molly Soda. She had a pet rat named Sarah Michelle Gellar (SMG for short) and she turned "beauty" on it's head with what modern scholars would call "Shit posting" herself spitting, puking, picking at her armpit hairs, all while singing so effeminately you couldn't help but be in awe of the juxtaposition of what society says is "appropriate" for a woman to be considered pretty versus what she was showing us: A woman in all her flaws and glory and still beautiful.

Check out her YouTube- Molly Soda is still creating art and content. Landlocked Mermaid- Ex- Tumblr Blogger This is a personal appreciation post here. This blogger deactivated years "before it was cool" (jk) but she really did- and became an obscure memory in the tumblr world. She RULED the indie girl Tumblr scene and went viral for kissing Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes at a concert once. Her family also owned the amusement park BIG was filmed at. I thought she was the coolest. Her and her friend Moonbrains (who I believe is still active on Tumblr) invented "sea punk" which was a mix of her handle name "landlocked mermaid" mixed with the punk movement popularized by the Tumblr grunge trend. (Anyone still own their lime crime "grunge palette"?) aka the Venus 1 haha. It's almost impossible to find pictures of them on the internet so here there are here. Immortalized in ones and zeroes.

Before vivid color existed we had to create and mix our own hair dye. This mix is superb.

There it is folks. Some of the big inspirations for some of my handles. The online ladies who helped shape an entire generation with colorful hair, cool clothes, and music tastes that broke da mout. Forever in my heart and now forever on the inter webs. To my Web Girls... Love, Michi xo

@bitchlessdino: you love your little bratty, loving and talented maknaes so obviously yeojin is the one for you <3 her and dino truly have so many parallels and their personalities are so similar and she'd be the upbeat extrovert to immediately boost your spirits and help calm you down when you need!

@97-liners: hyeju (or olivia hye but she hates being called her stage name lol). it's so easy. she's kind of an elusive nerd with a heart of gold and a secret desire to be soft.. she'll listen to all of jackie's ramblings and hyperfixations (she might make lighthearted fun but she'll remember to tuck in the back of her mind the pen jackie has been lamenting about wanting for forever) and they can chill on the couch while hyeju plays her games <3

@gguksgalaxy: this is kind of targeted based on what gwaen has told me about her types, but heejin is the perfect mix of bunny and puppy (which we don't talk about, shhh). she's fun, artistic, loves to bake and cook and loves to cling on to the nearest person for a quick hug. her and gwaen would have a wonderful time, especially when heejin is being her loser self.

@baekhyunnybyun: she's funny, talented and her individualistic self; i can't really explain why but i see bex with yves so wonderfully. yves is just the coolest girl to exist and someone that i can see bex having a ton of fun with. whether it be writing (especially since yves started her own blog), exploring the city or showing her new choreography, yves would know how to show bex a good time! also, while she's a little sarcastic with her loved ones, she's especially protective of them, just like how i feel bex is!

OKAY SO LIKE. YOU KNOW HOW A LOT OF ANIMATED SHOWS AND STORIES EXIST. AND A LOT OF THEM ARE ABOUT CHILDHOOD AND COMING OF AGE RIGHT. AND THEY ALL HANDLE THIS GORGEOUSLY AND THEY ALSO HANDLE MATURE THEMES BEAUTIFULLY AND THINGS LIKE THE OWL HOUSE ARE INCREDIBLE FOR THAT. HOWEVER. SUCKS IN BREATH. AMPHIBIA. it's a classic fantasy story girl gets sucked into amphibian world where there are frogs and toads and salamanders and it is like. this big colorful fun escapist world and yet also class differences and this kid learning to be a better person and her friends learning to be better people (<- also the main character, anne, is thai which is one of the coolest things i've ever seen. more southeast asian people in art represent) and LIKE MANY children's shows it gets progressively darker as it goes on. but. it never loses its goofiness. and its love and earnestness and weirdness of when you are a kid in that middle school to high school transitional stage. and in the end the kids have to go home and grow up, and live their lives in the world they were trying to escape. and like. tater and i were talking privately about a bunch of stuff that happened during the peak pandemic era in regards to personal life & also kotlcblr as a whole and how much of a support system it was for us in the sense of like. it being this safe place for us to come and be silly and also have A Talk when we needed it and then how a lot of people kind of aged out for it and then i went OOF. OW. TATER. ISN'T THAT LIKE THE SHOW THAT I JUST FINISHED WATCHING AND U HAVE BEEN RAVING ABOUT FOREVER

I LOVE intertextuality and connection and recurring themes about the human condition and life and growing and how we tell the same stories through different lenses and the love that goes into it all.

2020 keepblr was such a retreat, this whole other world full of such enthusiasm and energy and companionship. for that brief window in time (it was like 2 years ish but compared to eternity) all of our lives crossed paths and we were all so present and important to each other. homework sucked and a lot of life sucked and we were learning who we were a lot of us (not that that's a process that ever stops, but early teen years especially have some shit going on) and had this place to go without fear of judgement--at least not the same as irl judgement. it was so supportive!! there was so much engagement with everything and everyone it was glorious

and it's so surreal to watch people move on. because like...that's what happens a lot of the time. we outgrow our younger interests as we age, we spend our time on different things. we cannot hold onto this moment forever and truly it would be unfair to ourselves to try, to keep us there. sometimes the point of something is for it to be impermanent.

i don't know if i'm making any sense but you get it! the themes! the past! the growing up!

A secret trait that can make or break cool characters, Ft. Across The Spider-Verse. An effortpost.

Intro

Until recently, I did not have strong opinion on Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew, since she was a side-character with barely any screentime - I youtubed “across the spiderverse but it's only jess” to get a number and people didn’t care about her enough to make that video.

Most of the discourse surrounding her was either racism/sexism (why the fuck are those people even watching spider-verse) or people wanting her to do the mommy who keeps the angry man in check cliché.

Personally, I liked how they averted that with a minor character well enough, so I didn’t bother engaging. Spider-verse does the cliché-baiting-aversion thing a lot, for example with Hobie and cheap love triangles, and it's great every time.

BUT, apparently the art book says that she was designed to be cool and they “knew she’d be a fan-favourite”. Now, “cool” is subjective, but “cool fan-favourite” is not and, even compared to someone who was barely in the most recent movie - Peni Parker - Jess is embarrassingly less popular.

And the thing is, a lot of the complaints I've seen about her coolness (which are not from racists) talk about stuff like how she's a minor side character, are pregnancy discourse, or are like "how is she expected to be cool when she's in the same movie as hobie".

I wrote a whole thing talking about all those things and more in tremendous detail, but it was way too long for a single text post - plus, it was very specifically about Jess rather than the concept of a cool character.

TL;DPost: Pavitr exists for like a very short amount of time sharing scenes with Hobie and he's still more popular than Jess except for resource-rich countries Sweden and Venezuela.

So, I thought that out the many traits that make a character cool (competence, agency, confidence...) I'd very specifically talk about the most overlooked one, which Jess lacks, and to avoid falling for sacrificial trash bait I’ll only use women or POC as examples (except when discussing two historical examples).

Luckily, Spiderverse itself provides us with plenty of examples, such as Gwen (Irish girl), Pavitr (Indian guy), and Hobie (British).

Transgressiveness

The concept of cool itself, in the modern day, is tied to things like punk subculture; to quote Robert Christgau,

Hippies were rainbow extremists; punks are romantics of black-and-white. Hippies forced warmth; punks cultivate cool.

Fundamentally, one of the if not the meaning of the word cool, is something that infringes rules, norms or expectations in a way that pleases us.

This is true for every medium:

Samus is cool because she’s a girl wearing power armor in an 80s game.

Hollow Knight’s Hornet (black female spider-person) is at her coolest when she saves the Knight from the Cast-Off shell and webslings away.

Millennium’s Lisbeth Salander is cool because she’s a psychologically tortured woman who lives on the edge of the law but never truly hurts those who don’t deserve it.

Since I write 1984 fanfic: Julia is cool because she habitually avoids the rules set by the Party, fully knowing that it’s not going to end well and choosing not to dwell on it.

Obviously, it’s even true outside of fiction: gender, as an adjective, is often used in progressive circles to mean “blurs gender lines in a visually appealing way”; and it’s actually true in real life, though I can probably not make any noncontroversial examples.

If you look at the movies themselves, Gwen primarily has a trans(heh)gressive aesthetic: her haircut was not yet overdone in 2018, she’s in a punk rock band, and she’s Gwen Stacy but alive.

Pavitr is transgressive because he’s Spider-man and his life isn’t shit yet, and he rubs that in your face with confidence (the exaggerated swagger of an Indian teen), while getting distracted with menial stuff and still keeping up with his responsibilities fine.

Note that this “kid who doesn’t really try and aces all their tests anyway” energy is important, because if he got distracted shipping Gwiles and actually lost track of the Spot, then that wouldn't be transgressive in a pleasing way, that’d be transgressive in a frustrating way - the "kid who slacks off on the group project" way.

Hobie, which is widely agreed upon to be the coolest character, has - obviously - punk aesthetics and his dramatic entrance breaking down an energy barrier with his anarchy-powers. His intro monologue is a break from norm - “I was bitten by a – wouldn’t you like to know?”, he’s british, and doesn’t believe in consistency. Or comedy, but that’s just a joke.

And most importantly, his actions are transgressive. Every step of the way, he sets Miles up to beat Miguel, or he’s working toward making sure Gwen still has a watch after she’s exiled from the spider-society. This also, incidentally, makes him likeable - which isn’t a necessary part of being cool, but sure as hell does help.

To bring up the historical examples I mentioned before: The Punisher breaks the rules in a way that appeals to his, uh, target audience. He kills dozens of people because that’s darker and edgier and I swear comic books are not for children mom.

Darth Vader is constantly abusing his officers and blowing up planets; until The Emperor shows up he’s generally the one setting the rules.

And no, Doomguy is not a character, he’s a player insert. I love killing demons as much as anyone, but don’t bullshit me with “oh but he’s cool”.

Generally, I think, we can put character actions on a political compass of “follows the rules vs makes their own rules” and “in a likeable vs unlikeable way”. “Makes their own rules in a likeable way” is the coolest quadrant, while “follows the rules in an unlikeable way” is the least cool.

By the way, this is why cool characters are often funny - comedy is built on the unexpected. A lot of Hobie’s lines aren’t laugh-out-loud funny, but they’re “Heh. That’s kinda funny” funny, such as “Hobie you’re not helping” “Good”.

Jessica Drew first intervenes not out of her own free will - like Gwen, Miguel, Pavitr, Hobie, Peter B., et cetera but because she’s called in. Her aesthetics are like… She looks like my aunt if she put on dumb fucking glasses.

She proceeds to do nothing except for ask if Miguel could pretty please let Gwen on board. Do note that she 100% defers the decision to the man. In every other interaction, she’s just sorta there, acting as a second-tier antagonist unquestionably following Miguel’s orders or conceding Gwen enough time to speedrun Super Mario Odissey.

This is even when she knows better - she knows Miles is much less dangerous than Spot, because she participated in a conversation where Gwen tried to brush him off as a villain of the week but didn’t fall for it.

This is terrible for coolness, because it's also stripping her of agency - forcing her to rely on confidence and competence that don't have much space to shine.

She is actively following bad norms, even though she knows them to be bad, and consistently opposing the main characters when doing so to obey the actually interesting antagonist, Miguel.

And yes, a lot of these criticisms can be levelled at Peter B - who could probably have done more to back up Gwen in the go-home-machine room, for instance - but Peter wasn’t specifically designed to be cool. Peter is written to be a dad who doesn’t want huge status quo shakeups, and that’s who he is.

If Jess had been designed specifically to be cool, and had been well-designed, she'd be transgressive or make up for her lack of transgressiveness somehow. But she wasn't designed to be cool, she was designed to explain Miguel taking Gwen in and the coolness was added on to make her a less obvious plot device.
