I want to talk about all the little attachments and details on my AAC device!
Tumblr media
The main way that I communicate is with my device. The one I currently use is a high tech AAC device made out of an android tablet and the app Avaz. Attached to my device are a few little things, some of which might not seem too important, but all of them are actually very important to me!
Tumblr media
Attached to my strap are my chewmoji communication cards. I got them a few years ago. Whilst I mainly use my device to communicate, and it is very useful and easy for me, sometimes my chewmojis are easier for communicating simple emotions. They get the most use when I am regressed and/or when I have low spoons. They are very easy for me to use, because I can just flip through them and find the one that looks like how I feel! They are also chewable, which is helpful if I am having a difficult time and need oral sensory input. I don't use them very often for chewing, I usually use my chewy pendants for that, but its useful to have the option just in case. (In case anyone is wondering, yes, I wash them frequently! Even when I havent chewed on them I still clean them often.)
Tumblr media
On my strap are my pins. I currently have two pins on my strap, but I would like to also get one that says something like "I'm autistic".
The blue pin on my strap is for safety and convenience purposes. It says "I hear + understand but don't speak". I need this pin because often times people won't understand that I am nonspeaking, and so they will become confused or even frustrated with me.
The other pin is for comfort purposes. It is a pin of a red converse shoe, and my best friend in the entire world gave it to me.

AAC IS HERE !!!! Pictures first, then explanation of settings and my feelings/opinions so far!
Tumblr media
[Image description: A Jabbla Vibe 10 dedicated communication device, with Grid 3 open to Grid Explorer. It has the name Ezra at the top and three grid sets ready to be opened. Each has a different colour, from left to right they are red, teal, and dark green. Red is Supercore 50, teal is WordPower 100, and dark green is WordPower 100 for Switches. End ID.]
Tumblr media
[Image description: Same communication device, open to Supercore 50 grid set. It is 9 buttons across, 6 buttons down. There is additional row at the top, which is like this from left to right; magic wand, jump back, speech bar taking the space of 4 normal buttons, speak, delete word, clear. End ID.]
Tumblr media
[Image description: Communication device open to WordPower 100, with a plastic keyguard over the top. The keyguard is made of clear plastic and clips onto the device with two black clips, one on each side. This grid is 9 by 12, including the top row with the speech bar and other buttons on either side of speech bar. The background colour is dark blue. The keyguard holes is a bit smaller than the size of the buttons, so sometimes seeing the full button is tricky. End ID.]
Tumblr media
[Image description: Same device, open to WordPower 100 for Switches. It is without the keyguard because the grid is 9 by 13 instead of 9 by 12, so it doesn’t fit this grid. The background is white and there is bigger spacing between the buttons compared to the other grids. There is a switch frequency keyboard on the right hand side of the screen. The buttons on this grid is divided into clearer blocks, for switch scanning. End ID.]
Okay… Firstly I am very very excited and happy and quite overwhelmed!! It is so great and relieving to have my own dedicated device, finally! I cannot describe how much this will help me.
Michelle (SCTCI (Scottish Centre of Technology for the Communication Impaired) person) set this up so the WordPower 100 grid is automatically opened first. However I already think I need to change this so Supercore 50 is first to open. I already am so much faster with Supercore, I think because it is less buttons to process, less overwhelming. And more easy to understand categories which help me with navigation (I struggle with that).
I also will try the keyguard, and Michelle say she can get another one for WordPower 100 for Switches. I don’t know if keyguard for Supercore 50 is an option, but it is custom made by someone apparently, so I assume it is possible.
Basically right now is just for trying and editing and experimenting. Then eventually I can ask Mum to email Michelle if I have anything to say or ask!
The physical device (Jabbla Vibe 10) is great! Not too heavy, good handle, good stand with good range of angles. I also have a bag for it!
I am just so happy and proud. I already use Supercore 50 to say several long sentences to Mum, and I am super fast on it!!! That is a big deal and big accomplishment for me. I also have Archie Scottish boy voice, and I love it.
🥰😍🤩🥳😄🎉

Been trying to work on aac. Figure out what tablet and app need.
Want keep using Avaz but maybe benefit from something… “more”.
The thought of using proloquo2go scares me in a way. It might be the set up of the app…
Maybe want try grid 3 and TD snap. Seem like good useful apps and Amy doesn’t hate the set up like proloquo.
Want iPad but so expensive and don’t know now much storage is needed. Thinking save up for iPad mini or some type of iPad Air… but so unsure.
Any help very appreciated, need know as much as possible so can figure out how much needs to be saved up.

Be nice and don't mock tumblr users that communicate differently.
Examples:
1.) Typing quirks
2.) No punctuation
3.) Random Capitalisation
4.) Long run on sentences
5.) Frequently misspelled words
6.) Missing spaces between words
7.) Repeating words and sentences
8.) Posts audios and videos instead of typing
9.) Express themselves through custom emojis
10.) Use an AAC (Augmentative and alternative communication) device
Some users have intellectual disabilities, use speech to text, struggle with grammar, have hand tremmers, have high support needs, etc.
Regardless of how they communicate and their reason why, they still deserve respect. They are trying their best.

Saw someone on tiktok mentioning Bunny the dog with the buttons.
They mentioned how she was taught communicate, and then she became sentient & talks about mortality, and now she's on anxiety medication.
I don't think she gained sentience, I think it's just now she has a way to communicate what she already felt. She learned a form of communication we understand & communicated.
Like, she's like a toddler learning new ways to communicate her thoughts & feelings. It's interesting to see that animals think & feel similarly to us, but kinda sad she deals with mental health stuff just like humans, but I guess it's good she could voice it?
Like did they find out through communication with her? Or was it her behaviors?
I saw one person mention how she uses her communication devices to say when her brother (the other dog, who I think they're also teaching the buttons) poops. She'll also say when her dad poops, and someone else replied saying they think that in itself is more communication because dogs get information from poop. Y'know.
Basically what I'm saying is, animals are already sentient, they just communicate differently than us so we just don't know apart from body language, how they feel. But by animals like Bunny learning to communicate with the buttons we can see they think similarly to us, and they deal with similar stuff to us.
It's believed dogs and cats have the same brain capacity as a Three year-old child, meaning they can grasp what their feelings mean and how to start communicating them, they just don't have a natural way to tell us all they feel.

I don't go to restaurants very often, but I wanted to talk about this anyway: Going to restaurants as an AAC user.
The fear of not being able to convey my thoughts and preferences to the waiter or waitress can make the whole dining experience unpleasant. I tend to worry that the staff may not understand my communication device, or it might be too loud to hear my device in the first place. Due to this, I have my mother (or friend, if I am with a friend) order for me. But this brings up another fear, if they don't know it is a communication device, I become afraid that they think I am an "I-Pad kid", which makes me even more anxious.
Also, ordering at a restaurant often involves a lot of pressure to perform quickly and efficiently, especially during busy times (absolutely not saying that this isn't stressful for staff too because of being rushed). This can be even more stressful for AAC users who are slower at using AAC and need extra time to type their order.
Everyone deserves to have a positive dining experience, regardless of how they communicate. Restaurant staff can play an important role in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for AAC users. They can take the time to listen carefully, ask questions, and show empathy and patience. And for AAC users, here are a few things that you might be able to do to make it easier for yourself, too:
Prepare your order beforehand
Buy a special case with volume enchantment (I don't know what it's called but I know it exists)
Turn up your volume to the highest option if it's loud
Show the staff member your screen if necessary
Wear a pin explaining you use AAC or are nonspeaking (I recently ordered one off Etsy that says "I hear + understand but don't speak", which I am very excited to receive)

Second big news update for Ezra life:
New AAC arrive with SCTCI (Scottish Centre of Technology for the Communication Impaired) people!!!
In 2 weeks will finally get to receive my own device - Jabbla Vibe 10 with Grid 3 - and it will be mine to keep!
I am so excited to finally get my voice that I can communicate more and better and easier with. Have had much frustration especially recently about struggle to express myself, I know my new device will help so much.
It is great start to this new year. Usually I don’t bother to think about new year things, because I have next-to-none sense of time, and things can come good or bad at any time, not just new year. But it still gives me hope for the rest of the year and years to come after that.
I want to increase my in-person communication and make it more than just: make gestures and signs and noises to Mum and Dad and get frustrated when they don’t understand. I will work to learn my new communication system, and hope to get better at fast using words “in the moment”. Even if it is not perfect, I want to at least get out my words that I do have “in the moment”, rather than wait until hours/days/weeks/months later until I manage to express in words.
There is so many factors to consider with how to best access communication for me, so many barriers that get in my way. I know this new device will help get around some of those obstacles.
