Femme Fatale Guide: Top Career Tips To Set Yourself Up For Success
Figure out where your skills and passions align. Then determine the lifestyle/work culture you thrive in and what sacrifices you're willing to make in your chosen career path (for some, it's always traveling/talking to people 24/7, working late hours, unpredictable/unconventional hours, potentially lower pay/less predictable income, etc.). It truly depends on your top values, your personality, and your goals/priorities in life.
First focus on getting incredibly talented at your craft. Find a mentor(s) who will push you with their feedback/suggestions. Take classes/skills courses/read books & articles to gain more applicable knowledge/hard skills. Join clubs, apply to internships, volunteer, and request informational interviews in your desired field.
Make your skills marketable. Create a professional resume and/or neat portfolio/collection of work samples. Discover and articulate your USP (that should essentially serve as the backbone of your elevator pitch). Frame your skills through a customer/business-centric lens. How does your experience/skillset solve their problems and help a company/client achieve their goals?
Build a network for yourself. Don't be shy to reach out to companies/individuals who inspire you. Speak with your secondary school teachers and professors for connections. Create peer-to-peer networks, too, so you can grow together. Be a fearless networker and connector. Help others, do favors, and make the person glad they met/hired you. Make it your objective to be memorable through your work ethic/providing high-quality work products and showing up with a motivated & overall positive attitude allows people to like and trust you with their time, clients, money, etc.
Master the art of a killer email/cold pitch. Especially in today's world, learning how to sell yourself through intriguing emails/LinkedIn messages is the key to unlocking potential success. One client or opportunity can create momentum that will be useful years down the line, too.
When in doubt, follow up – on an email, pitch, job opportunity, connection, etc.
Be ruthless and relentless with your research. For new contacts, connections, opportunities, and information to support your pitches/job interviews/networking conversations, new technologies, and trends within your field. Read everything credible you can get your hands on. Display working knowledge and practical applications of these concepts and how they can benefit the person in front of you/their business.
Create systems. For how you structure emails/pitches, conduct research, different types of workflows/ work template structures for different types of projects, time-blocking, client funnels, etc.
Get comfortable with rejection. Use it as a primer for self-reflection and refining your craft/processes or help you pivot your approach to help you achieve your goals. Never take business decisions on behalf of a company personally (and vice versa).
Give yourself breaks, but don't give up. Tapping out for good is the only surefire way to fail at an endeavor. Be flexible in your path, but zeroed in on your goal(s). Learn when to quit or pivot, and when it's time to coast or seek growth.

Gojo Satoru x Reader x Geto Suguru
The Cursed Trio | Artificial Paradise
Tumblr media
**Finally finishing up Uni forever --- well, until I decide what to do my Master's on. About to go hard on finals so wish me luck on that. I'm so sorry for the wait!
...
It's been a while since you've had a chance to catch your breath from all the messed-up stuff swirling around in your everyday jujutsu life. A week has passed since that little... "moment" back on Halloween.
Honestly, it was supposed to be a good, vulnerable moment between the three of you — something that should've solidified your bond. But, you can't shake this sense of shame.
Shame for multiple reasons, but the main one is that, for some reason, you feel ashamed for feeling the way you did. For expressing yourself the way you did. That vulnerability you felt in Gojo's arms, watching as Suguru took his own swig from the sake bottle — it frustrated you to no end. Why did you feel so awful just being in the moment? In a way, you felt humiliated for being so raw with others. But at the same time, you argued with yourself that what you did was okay. Of course, you have the right to expression — a right to sensation, a right to feeling.
Yet, you can't help but want to shove that night into the background so those feelings won't sting anymore. Whatever you felt, it's confusing to say the least.
Despite the inner turmoil, you pushed through — the best you could manage for the moment was to shove those feelings aside. Because, let's face it, if you indulged in those thoughts, you'd likely end up diving headfirst into a sea of emotions, drowning in them until it seemed like you'd never felt anything else.
Fortunately, today just so happens to be one of the best distractions imaginable.
It's Ieiri's birthday.
If it weren't for Utahime creating a group chat just for the birthday party, you wouldn't have even known it was Ieiri's birthday.
Originally, Ieiri wasn't keen on doing anything special for her birthday, leaning towards a chill day at the park with some convenience store snacks and her favorite pack of cigarettes. But Utahime insisted, emphasizing that her little kouhei deserved a proper celebration. So, everyone tossed in their own ideas — mainly you, Mei Mei, Utahime, Haibara, and Kento.
Utahime was all about a shopping spree, Mei Mei favored an amusement park, Haibara suggested a classic dinner at a restaurant, and surprisingly, Kento threw in the idea of a night out in Shibuya. Gojo and Suguru were predictably useless; Gojo with his absurd ideas, and Suguru just going with the flow.
Honestly, you didn't pitch in any ideas either. You thought Ieiri's original plan was pretty nice. It felt more intimate than the traditional options. Nevertheless, the idea of hitting Shibuya and diving into the nightlife gained popularity in the group, especially when Gojo realized he could easily charm some pretty girls at the club.
And thus, the steps to heading out to Shibuya began.
Getting Ready
Just like the chaos of preparing for the waterpark months ago, getting ready this time was an absolute mess among the three of you. Especially when Ieiri asked you to help with her makeup — not gonna lie, you had to watch a few YouTube videos just to figure out what the hell to do.
You and Ieiri rushed to the nearest makeup store, searching for budget-friendly brands so you could assist her.
Side note: Ieiri only had the essentials like mascara and lip gloss, but considering it was a night out in one of Japan's busiest areas, she decided to go big with it.
Then there were Suguru and Gojo, bickering about what outfits to wear since they wanted to either match or at least have complementary outfits. This whole matching outfit thing started a few months back when you and Gojo unintentionally showed up with nearly identical outfits, sparking teasing from Suguru and Ieiri. After that, it became a quirky routine to find something that coordinated with the others' clothes.
Side note: Another factor was that each of you had a habit of raiding each other's closets, especially Suguru's, given his penchant for oversized clothing. His wardrobe was practically a hot commodity within your little trio.
The dorm rooms in disarray, small piles of clothes scattered in the hallways from Gojo tossing everything out of his closet, forgetting his door is wide open. Suguru shuttling back and forth between his room and yours, showcasing outfits for judgment, only to grumble and search for another when either you or Ieiri vetoes the look. You, attempting a YouTube tutorial while applying budget foundation on Ieiri's face, accidentally smearing some on the lollipop stick she's perpetually chewing on. The floor becomes a makeup disaster zone as you holler for Gojo to fetch you an outfit from your closet. He barges in, tiptoeing around you, eyeing how you're doing Ieiri's makeup, and can't resist making a comment. Suguru peeks in, curious about the commotion.
Cut to the climax — Gojo and Suguru literally shoving you aside as Gojo grabs the setting powder, tapping it onto the birthday girl's skin, while Suguru crouches beside them, offering ideas for eyeshadow styles and more. Meanwhile, you're rolling your eyes and grappling with the decision of what to wear.
Ah, don't forget the music. Every room has its own soundtrack as everyone gears up individually — each of you with your dedicated playlist for getting ready. Honestly, it's as chaotic as it gets, especially when Yaga storms down, hollering for all of you to clean up the mess while sneakily appreciating Gojo's makeup on Ieiri.
You and Suguru linger in the background, tossing all of Gojo's clothes into the closet without bothering much about hangers and such. That's a problem for future him.
Curious about what Kento and Haibara are up to as they get ready for the night? Well, Kento is bombarding your phone with pictures of potential outfits he's considering. In the background of these photos, you can spot Haibara making faces and waving at you. Midway through this whole ordeal, he even gave you a call. During the conversation, not many words were exchanged; instead, you both used each other's sounds as a sort of background noise while putting on your outfits, only to take them off and start the process anew.
Every now and then, you'd catch Haibara screaming something in the background — usually about not being able to find his favorite socks or some such. Kento, in response, would grumble under his breath before directing him to the last place he saw the elusive socks.
Before long, Mei Mei and Utahime reached the school gates. Yaga guided them to the dorm rooms, and the three of them observed the chaos unfolding with all four of you (Kento and Haibara were on the other side) scrambling around to gather the rest of your stuff.
Gojo was putting the finishing touches on Ieiri's makeup while she tidied up her room. Suguru haphazardly tossed the remainder of his clothes onto his bed, and you dashed to your room with Kento still chatting in your ear while you struggled to put on your shoes. Meanwhile, Utahime was yelling at all of you for leaving such a mess, and Mei Mei chuckled under her breath, commenting on how cute it was that Gojo knew how to do makeup.
On a side note, you had Gojo's glasses, so you had to sidle over to him as he touched up Ieiri's lipstick, all the while putting the glasses on his own face, with Mei Mei cooing in the background.
On the way to Shibuya
The trip to Shibuya isn't long, but as your little group sprints onto the train, time seems to speed up with everyone bickering and bantering. Mei Mei and Gojo are doing their usual banter dance, sprinkled with a few flirty comments here and there. Suguru is engrossed in a deep conversation with Kento near the window, while Ieiri and Utahime chat animatedly with each other.
Haibara is trying to strike up a conversation with you, but for the life of you, you can't seem to respond. It's as if your thoughts are shrouded in a fog. You feel like you're not entirely present, but you desperately want to be—your gaze seemingly lost in space, unfocused.
Before you know it, a warm sensation envelops your hand, grounding you back to reality. Haibara is leaning over you, a slightly concerned expression on his face as he quietly asks if you're alright.
"Are you alright? You seem... off." Blinking away the remnants of your brain fog, you manage a nod and respond with a quick, "Yeah, just, uh, spaced out a bit."
Haibara frowns, "You've been doing that a lot. Did something happen?"
Internally, you think, "What didn't happen?"
Trying to suppress an eye roll at his concern becomes an act of frustration. Why would you do that when it's perfectly fine for him to express concern? After all, he cares about you.
Stop being a fucking bitch.
With a slight, disarming smile, you shrug. "I'm just going through one of those moments—it'll pass eventually. So no need to worry about it." He doesn't seem entirely convinced, but then again, he knows better than to push you for an answer.
You've always been like a brick wall, unyielding and towering. Just when something manages to climb, they only catch a glimpse of the other side before more bricks are piled on, obstructing their view.
With a soft hum, Haibara settles back into the seat beside yours, sinking into his chair before resting his head on your shoulder. He traces small circles on the back of your hand as you attempt to steady your breathing.
Side Note: Kento and Suguru were actually brainstorming ways to cheat on the upcoming exam. The two of them were seriously fried from all the missions, studying, and non-stop testing. Kento floated the idea, and Suguru ran with it. Right now, they're thinking of scribbling the answers on the inside of their collars — they figure it's a safe bet since they've got a solid track record as studious guys.
The Shibuya Scene
It didn't take long before you could sense yourself distancing from your more negative emotions—or, in reality, the closer you got to Shibuya, you pushed yourself to catch the group's infectious energy. You let it flow through you, sweeping all your thoughts, worries, and insecurities to the back of your mind. The bustling crowds on the train, everyone dressed up for the night ahead, helped in the process.
For the first time that day, you could finally breathe as you jumped to your feet, pulling Haibara along with you.
Dragging Haibara along, you hustled over to Suguru, who had kindly volunteered to be the backpack carrier for everyone's stuff. You held the bag for him while he got up from his seat, with Kento standing behind you, attempting to steady a very dizzy and giggling Haibara who quipped, "Well, you bounced back up pretty quick."
If only he knew.
Your initial mission was to grab some food because, for some reason, none of you felt particularly hungry before heading out. But the moment those train doors swung open, Gojo started complaining about how famished he was. He slung his arm over Kento, who was visibly irritated by the gesture. His blonde eyebrows twitched as he attempted to shove the clingy Gojo off.
You stumbled upon this quaint spot called Zuicho—a bit hidden and surprisingly small. Only eight seats were available, but luck was on your side as most of the patrons had left, leaving 7 out of the 8 seats open. The restaurant specialized in katsudon, and despite the limited menu, the reviews were solid, so the group decided, "Why not?" Kento generously offered Ieiri the last available seat while he opted to eat standing, patiently waiting for the lingering customer to vacate the spot.
One stern look from Mei Mei, and the man occupying the final chair hastily scurried away, bowl in hand. This prompted the restaurant staff to shout and chase after the fleeing diner. Surprisingly, Gojo footed the bill for the pilfered bowl, nonchalantly waving his little black card around as if it were of no value whatsoever.
Upon arriving at Shibuya Cross, Mei Mei, accompanied by an exuberant Haibara, suggests the idea of a group picture. Mainly, Mei Mei seizes the opportunity to stand closer to Gojo as everyone finds their spots, enlisting a stranger with tinted glasses to take the photo – another young foreigner, much like yourself. Eventually, the group naturally disperses, exploring the area. Though not old enough for the clubs, curiosity propels your little groups through the bustling streets.
Gojo ends up pulling Suguru toward a group of admiring girls, while Mei Mei attempts conversation with the relatively unresponsive Kento, who keeps an eye on you and Haibara. The two of you are engrossed in a debate over whether to spend money at an intriguing kiosk. Utahime and Ieiri have vanished, likely off seeking possible group activities.
Side note: Utahime brings out a pink sash and a tiara both proclaiming "birthday girl," draping them over Ieiri. Ieiri nearly lunges at Gojo when he manages to snap a photo of her unawares. You and Utahime have to hold her back while Suguru gives Gojo a smack on the back of the head amid his maniacal laughter.
Add-On: Gojo slyly managed to shoot the picture over to Suguru, who sneakily checked it out after Gojo deleted the photo on his phone right in front of Ieiri. Suguru decided to hold onto it, a mischievous grin playing on his face as he and Gojo exchanged a knowing glance.
A while after the photo, something neon catches your eye. Next thing you know, Utahime and Haibara are jumping up and down, excitedly yelling about Mario Kart cars that can be rented out along with onesies.
Suddenly, Utahime is hollering at Kento to find the location on his phone, simultaneously giving his collar a playful tug. Ieiri is genuinely pumped as the gang heads over to Street Kart Shibuya — then comes the dilemma of deciding who gets to rock which onesie. And let me tell you, that turned into a full-blown war. Suguru claimed Pikachu, Gojo insisted on Stitch, Mei Mei initially resisted the whole costume thing but eventually caved, opting for a low-key Mario. Ieiri went with the timeless Winnie the Pooh, Utahime snagged Kirby, Kento happily nabbed Luigi (much to Mei Mei's satisfaction), Haibara transformed into Bowser, and you, my friend, embraced your inner Ninja Turtle.
You all cruised through the streets like there was no tomorrow. Surprisingly, Gojo was the picture of safe driving, while Suguru embraced a bit more recklessness, a wild grin on his face as he zoomed by most of the group. Utahime was hot on his heels, having challenged him to a small race.
Meanwhile, Kento kept to the rear with Mei Mei and you, the three of you just chilling. In the meantime, Ieiri and Haibara engaged in a conversation, shouting over the roar of their engines.
Side Note: Gojo had brought a speaker along, handing it to Kento to carry along with Ieiri's iPod. This way, he could blast her favorite tunes as the group navigated the crowded streets of Shibuya. Pedestrians, mostly spirited and slightly tipsy, cheered and danced on the sidewalks, as they listened to the songs.
It's a miracle none of you crashed.
Side Note: Since none of you could really get into the nightclubs, you ended up just standing outside, huddled together, grooving a bit to the music. You chatted among yourselves while Gojo and Haibara grabbed sodas and snacks from the nearest convenience store, bags swinging from their arms as they passed the drinks around.
Add-On: Ieiri managed to snag a cigarette from a tipsy guy loitering outside the club, and you lit it up for her. Suguru nearly lost his shit when he caught you lighting up Ieiri's cigarette; he assumed you smoked too, and he was this close to giving you a smack for it.
By the end of the night, Utahime and Mei Mei hopped on the train back to Kyoto, catching it before they shut down for the night. Unfortunately, despite Kento's repeated reminders, the rest of you forgot. By the time you reached the station, it had already closed. So, everyone had to trek back to Jujutsu High on foot.
As you stroll along, Ieiri sticks close, a smile playing on her lips as she chuckles at something Haibara said, her fingers briefly brushing against yours. For a moment, you savor the warmth of her touch before sliding your hands into your hoodie pockets. You notice a slight dimming in her eyes, prompting you to remedy it by awkwardly resting your head on her shoulder as you all continue walking, muttering something about how Haibara can be pretty dumb.
Side Note: The speaker has run out of battery by now, so Suguru has Ieiri's iPod in his pocket, playing some random song at a low volume. It serves as background music, adding to the vibe of the stroll.
You can't recall how the night wrapped up — one moment, you're relishing the crisp night air while Gojo and Kento go back and forth, the other two idiots snickering in the background. Then suddenly, you find yourself sprawled on your bed, still decked out in the same clothes from the night out, silently gazing up at the blank expanse of your room's white ceiling.
Your eyes fixate on a piece of paper you taped up there ages ago, its gold lettering shimmering in the ambient lighting. A whirlwind of thoughts swirls through your mind, yet none quite break the surface. For a moment, you exist in the fabric of time, quietly tuning in to Suguru's thunderous snores echoing from the next room.
Suddenly, a text pinged on your phone. You knew instantly who the sender was as you groaned in annoyance and frustration. Crawling to your phone, which had been charging on the nightstand just above your head, you squinted your eyes at the brightness of the screen as you read the message.
Gakuganji
Meeting. End of the month.
You almost wanted to throw a fit as a bubble of dread filled your being. Shutting the phone off, you tossed it to the side before flopping back onto your bed. Red-tinged eyes stared up, once again, at the ceiling.
You never knew an object could also have a fuzzy outline
...
Song Inspo: xanny - Billie Eilish
(A/N):
Oct 22 - Is this like a filler episode? Yes, yes it is. I just wanted some fluff and what better way than with a little Birthday special? 🎆
Nov 14 - Ha, nah. Also, I'm currently obsessed with Megan Thee Stallions new song Cobra.
Originally:
This episode was supposed to be more light-hearted, but once I started typing, your character just took on a life of its own.
At first, Gojo was set on being Pikachu and Suguru, Stitch. However, when I considered the vibes and personas of those characters (admittedly, I don't know much about them), I recalled that Stitch was hella sassy, while Pikachu was pretty mellow. So, it just felt right to pair them up with their corresponding characters.
Originally, Suguru was supposed to drive recklessly, offering a glimpse into his deteriorating mental state and potentially hinting at suicidal tendencies. However, I added a playful dynamic between Utahime and him for a lighter touch, though it can still be interpreted differently.
I didn't plan to wrap up this episode the way I did, but it struck me as a fitting method of foreshadowing.
Gojo caught on to your spaced-out moment on the train, his black-tinted glasses shielding the fact from everyone else. But, his eyes were locked onto you the entire time.
It's one of my shorter episodes, yet it delves into the emotional turmoil your character seems to be constantly navigating, even in situations where it shouldn't be the case, like this relatively peaceful episode. It just goes to show that even when everything seems all right, it really isn't.
Kento took into account Ieiri's personality and preferences, which is why he suggested a simple night out in one of the busiest places in Japan.
Contrary to expectations, Gojo didn't go to flirt with pretty girls. In truth, he just wanted to stay with you and Suguru as a way to compensate for all the isolation he felt.
The act of denying yourself the simple touch of Ieiri's hand holds a deeper meaning; it's a symbol of rejecting affection, perceiving it as a potential threat to your own being. It also mirrors your reluctance to allow her into your personal space. Yet, in your attempt to spare her sorrow, you seek alternative paths. However, this action is also symbolic of your manipulative tendencies. On one side, you're indifferent to the possibility of causing her pain, yet on the other, you strive to maintain a facade of camaraderie. It's a double-edged blade, where the latter is the subtler but significant edge.
Usually, when someone puts something on the ceiling, it's often a way to convey that the person attaches some hope or sentiment to the object. It's like they're looking forward to it or, at the very least, it holds strong sentimental value.
The piece of paper taped to the ceiling is a direct reference to a previous episode. Did you ever figure out to whom the card belonged? And why is it taped to the ceiling?
A meeting at the end of the month? What's that about?
Yet, the lingering question persists: What exactly is your relationship with Gakuganji?

The Most Useful Lenormand Tips
Where is Lenormand Better than Tarot?
Shallow but essential questions — “Should I stay at home tonight? If I attend this party, will I have fun?” “Should I bring an umbrella? Will rain overpower the sun?” Tarot knows the answers too, but it prefers questions of a profound nature over little things like the weather.
Mindless gambling and betting — When there’s a sports match I want to bet on but I’m not a fan of either players or teams, tarot will never answer me correctly, because it will feel that I’m not invested emotionally. Lenormand won’t care. It will tell the truth fair and square.
Quick yes or no — When tarot answers a yes or no question, it attaches a thesis as to why it is so. But sometimes, people’s intentions, a situation’s history and my own motivations do not concern or interest me. So I ask Lenormand instead for a snappy decree.
How to Predict Timing with Lenormand
January - Fish
February - Snake
March - Stork
April - Paths
May - Woman
June - Ring
July - Man
August - Child
September - Rod
October - Heart
November - Clouds
December - House
Soon - Rider
Temporarily - Birds
Quickly - Clover
Suddenly - Scythe
A long time from now - Anchor
About a year from today - Tree
Yes or No with Lenormand
Hearts - Yes
Clubs - No
Diamonds - Could Be
Spades - Unlikely
How to Do a Line of Five
STEP 1: Lay out the cards.
Get the first 4 cards from the top of the deck.
Use the card at the bottom of the deck as the 5th card.
Note that the middle card is the theme.
STEP 2: Read the cards.
Read them like a sentence, from left to right.
Then read them as a string, with the leftmost card as the subject, and the succeeding ones as adjectives.
Mirror them: 1 + 5, 2 + 4.
Note any possible date predictions. (See above.)
STEP 3: Read the playing card inserts.
Note the suits for yes or no. (See above.)
Add the playing card pips to get the Lenormand card number. (Ace to 10 is 1 to 10, Jack is 11, Queen is 12, King is 13.) If the sum is more than 36, add the two digits.
Then read the Lenormand card that your calculation led you to as the one message you need to remember, if you forget everything else.
When to Do a Grand Tableau
1) On December 31st, or on your birthday, to ask about your whole year ahead.
2) At the beginning of every quarter, to ask about your next three months.
But just choose one or the other. Don’t do them both together.
Recommended Lenormand Decks
The Blue Owl — This classic deck is the equivalent of a blue box vintage Rider-Waite. It is complete with playing card inserts and has no-nonsense images.
Pixie’s — As a Rider-Waite reader, I find this one great to use side by side a tarot spread. It has Pamela Colman Smith’s art, so together, they’re nice and seamless to look at.
Seventh Sphere — The perfect crossbreed between modern and classic. In look and design, it is no doubt new. But just like the older decks, it speaks clear and true.
How to Master Lenormand by Yourself
If you are the type who deeply values tradition and prefers to read almost purely through intuition, buy Andy Boroveshengra’s book, “Lenormand Thirty Six Cards”. It teaches the Near and Far method — perhaps the oldest and most valid way of reading this system.
If you are a technical learner and reader who is a stickler for the rules, look to Caitlín Matthews’ masterpiece instead: “The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook”. It treats Lenormand as Linguistics. You would feel like you are taking a college course.
But… if you do not wish to take Lenormand so seriously, that is, if you do not care to learn everything about it entirely, simply download the “Seventh Sphere Lenormand” by Labyrinthos from the App Store. It will teach you all the basics, though perhaps nothing historical and classic.
Have fun with Lenormand!

LOVE IS CHAOS
masterlist / previous chapters
Chapter six - Eight of clubs
Tumblr media
The night had not been very pleasant. The mattress was so thin that you could feel every slat digging into your back, the sheets were so dusty that you felt like you were sleeping on a whole population of dust mites (and even shaking them as hard as you could, the dust seemed to be embedded in the fabric). You weren't the type to be scared easily, but you were expecting to have a night full of nightmares due to this new world you were now in.
Fortunately for you, in the end, it was a night without dreams or nightmares, or rather a night with so little sleep that you wondered if it was wise to find a new arena and play a new game today.
On the other side of the bed you had heard Niragi tossing and turning several times and if neither of you said the first word, you knew the other was awake, probably for the same reasons.
Finding breakfast was just as difficult as finding sleep. Cans of ravioli were dueling on the highest shelf in the abandoned kitchen, and it was a miracle to find a can of Mitsumame in the cupboard under the sink, because a fruit salad, even canned, was ten times better than ravioli or ratatouille for breakfast.
There were only a few pieces to share, and even though Niragi had insisted that you eat his share under the pretext that he wasn't really hungry, you knew that was just a lie to camouflage the fact that he wanted you to be the one to gain strength. He needed it just as much, but it was his own kind of love language and just for that, you finish those little pieces of lychee, a knot in your stomach.
Having to play a new again today made you nervous. It could be anything, on any topic, any theme or difficulty. You knew so little about this world that it was absolutely impossible to predict what you were getting into.
The sun had been up for a few dozen minutes already and it had painted the sky a pink-orange color that made it look fantastic. And as you watched the yellow ball sneak up behind some buildings in the distance, you couldn't help but wonder if there were games all day, or if it was only at a certain time.
Either way, it didn't make much of a difference.
"We should go get some supplies before the next game," Niragi commented as he dusted off a backpack he had found in the bedroom closet. His hands were still wrapped in the bandages you had carefully treated the day before and as he stretched his fingers with difficulty, an almost unnoticeable grimace appeared on his face.
Food was just as hard to come by as it had been the day before, and you wondered how to survive in this world without food. Surviving the games was one thing, but the lack of supplies was something else that the game masters should have thought about more seriously.
"Baby, look," you pointed to a small bush that seemed to vibrate with the sound of your footsteps. You thought you had imagined it as the grass stood still for a few seconds, then finally, right in the middle of that cobblestone street, you made out a rabbit snooping around on either side looking for the same food you were. It was all white and dirty from nature, but its furry face raised its head at the sound of your voice, before escaping and disappearing under a car, a little further.
The nature of flowers and trees littered the ground and began to gain ground on the buildings. It was a rather apocalyptic vision, like the end of the world in an American movie.
Niragi shrugged his shoulders and if he had a weapon at hand, whatever it was, he would have been happy to hunt the animal down for a good lunch. The hardest part would be lighting a fire and figuring out how to cook the animal on the coals. But with a defeatist insult, he kicked a rock and headed back the other way.
"Babe," you called a second time as you made out something in the distance that merited a challenge.
"Yes, I saw your damn rabbit, princess, can we get some food now?" Niragi mumbled over your shoulder as he walked further and further away.
"Damn it, Niragi, I told you, look!"
Pointing straight ahead in the distance, between the column of buildings that lined up perfectly, a new giant screen lit up the shadow that the sun didn't reach. On this white screen, written in black letters, you could read:
Game starts in fifteen minutes.  Please register at the Sakashitamon Gate.
Here we go again.
"Sakashitamon Gate?" Niragi repeated as he took another drag on the end of his cigarette, one hand in his pants pocket and his gaze fixed on the giant screen in front of you. "That's at the Royal Palace Gardens, right?"
Indeed.
So the next game would take place in the emperor's gardens. It was a vast and voluminous forest, and it was very easy to get lost if you didn't know the place well. They were huge gardens, full of flowers and famous for their beauty, but only open to the public twice a year. As much as to say that no one would have the advantage of knowing every corner of this forest more than another.
"Well, let's go." you commented as you watched Niragi throw the butt of his cigarette on the ground without taking the time to put it out. In the real world you would have grumbled at his actions, that you didn't tolerate pollution so easily but in a world like this you wondered what good it would do.
"We're on an empty stomach, it's not a good idea to go now." He was right. In all honesty, it would be much smarter to wait until the next game, once your stomachs were full and well-fed.
"If anything, we could win some food if we survive the game. How about a nice Donburi ?" It was highly unlikely that you would win a reward at the end of the game, let alone food. However, you thought it would be quite a victory to be able to eat a nice hot dish, and cooked with so much good culinary skill, that just imagining the dish, you could feel the smell caressing your nostrils and tantalizing your taste buds.
With a grunt of complaint and shuffling towards the playing arena, Niragi still insisted how bad an idea it was to play without eating. And even though he wasn't doing much to convince you otherwise, he still kept looking around on the way if a supermarket didn't miraculously appear.
The hard tar was heating up quickly thanks to the sun beating down hard against your heads. It was a cloudless sky and a windless atmosphere, and you knew it was going to be very hot today. It would usually have been a day of lounging by a pool with a cocktail in your hands and music blasting in your ears. And you sighed absentmindedly at the thought as you made your way to the bridge that led to the doors.
Before that bridge, in a shady corner, there was the same table as in the lobby of the building before the first game. There were three phones that had not yet been taken, and the same sign that said, ' One per person .'
Facial recognition in progress. Niragi Suguru.  Welcome.
As you took the phone in your hands, the same message appeared, with your name. Even though both of you were wondering what this game was, what it would be and how difficult it would be, neither of you spoke. Maybe it was a way to focus, or just a way to keep the pressure off each other while the danger of death remained the main concern in this world.
Instead, you walked next to each other, your fingers almost close enough to touch from time to time. In the distance, you could make out exactly seven other players waiting patiently under the blazing sun. There was a man with matted skin, a stranger with frizzy hair and crystal clear eyes. There was an old man who was over sixty years old, with a bad back and a creaking hip. Two teenage girls were trying to fan themselves with their hands, one with short, bright blue colored hair and the other with a long braid and a skirt that was way too short to call it decent. A man in sportswear was the only one sitting on the floor, muscular and athletic and with a prominent beard, he was just ogling the young woman with sunglasses and a short bob, dressed in jean shorts and a shirt tied at the waist. The last person was a short man in his forties, frail and shy, like a house of cards about to collapse and a backpack on his back.
When you arrived, and as at the first game, eyes turned to you, ogling from head to toe, but nobody said a word. As if it was bad luck to say something.
You didn't know how much time was left before the game started, but the sun that kept beating down on your head was already starting to make you dizzy. After a few minutes, a person appeared under the bridge, and if the math was right, this was the last player missing to start the game.
He had a small figure, face hidden under the hood of a light gray sweatshirt that made you frown at the surrounding heat. A few long blond locks were sticking out of his hood and as he walked towards you, a feeling of deja-vu ran through your body.
You recognized that walk and that nonchalant air under the impassive face of Chishiya Shuntaro. Your eyes widened and as if frozen in time, you couldn't look away as he offered an astonished smile when he laid his own eyes on your figure. "[Y/N], what a surprise to find you here..." he said in a soft, clear voice. He turned to Niragi and, provided with empty eyes and without much emotion, he bowed his head in respect.
"Who is that one?" Niragi spat aggressively as he stared at Chishiya's figure walking away to stand next to the woman with the sunglasses.
"A former... a former patient..." you explained softly, your eyes still fixed on the blond man's figure.
It was absolutely strange to run into Chishiya Shuntaro in this world, it was a chance in a million and you doubted the odds were ridiculous enough to really fall on that. A strange feeling was felt throughout your body and it was as unsettling as it was unexpected. Being stuck here with Niragi was one thing, but seeing someone you knew, and having to play life and death games was something that stirred your whole stomach.
"Why is he calling you by your first name?" Niragi kept asking, and he was right to ask so many questions. He had felt your body stiffen at the sight of the other man, he knew you well enough to manage to decipher the expressions on your face and if Niragi was a jealous man, then the world would end in ashes.
He still had insults stuck to the corner of his mouth, eyebrows locked in an eternal frown and if he even suspected for a second that this Chishiya was interested in you, you knew he could kill him without even blinking.
"I don't know... what's the point of calling me 'doctor' in this world?" You were trying to justify yourself as best you could, and while that explanation more or less made sense, Niragi was now staring at you with doubt written in his eyes and a promise that he would look further into it once the game was over.
But for now, the game had to start.
Registration closed.  The game will now begin.
With one last insistent look, Niragi's jaw tensed as he looked away from Chishiya once more. You knew that from then on, Chishiya's life would be in danger, more than what this game could bring. He now had the pressure of Niragi's eyes stabbing invisible knives into his face.
From a distance, Chishiya was waving his hand, and he had a kind of arrogant look plastered on his face that caused Niragi to growl an insult under his breath.
Game: Capture the flag.  Difficulty: Eight of clubs.
Exchanging a look with Niragi, you listened attentively to what the voice announced. You were right, there were other difficulties than diamonds, and it was surely necessary to start playing games that would also be clubs or hearts.
We will now be explaining the rules.  Each player is placed in a team of 5 people. Each team is assigned a flag that it must keep and protect at all costs. It's GAME CLEAR for the first team that manages to capture the other team's flag and bring it back safely to its base camp.  It's GAME OVER for the defeated team.
You had an advantage. You knew the game very well, having spent your childhood playing it with the other kids in the neighborhood. Of course, the playing field was much smaller than this one, but the strategy was the same.
One team can capture a member of the other team and bring him back to the prison of his base. You can choose your team.  It is forbidden to change the location of your flag. It will be game over for the players who are in prison, even if they are on the winning team.
That was a lot of rules compared to the other game. But this one was a physical game. It was a game of strategy and skill, and before you even start this game, the most important thing would be to pick your team. The tragedy was beginning now, and as the players began to argue their own opinions on the matter, you had already chosen who you needed on your team. The hardest part would be getting the other players to listen.
Time limit to pick teams: 3 minutes.  Time start.
"Excuse me," the old man said as he slowly approached the sportsman, "could I join your team?"
The man in the sportswear looked him up and down, with a maddening urge to blow him off. In a game of life and death, he would be crazy to accept an old gimp to defend a sporting activity. The two teenage girls also exclaimed, the blue-haired one singing in a soft voice, "Oh yes, sir, can we join your team too?"
Niragi rolled his eyes as he approached the woman with sunglasses. "You there," the woman turned as he approached and stiffened her back as if she was about to have to defend herself from some threat coming her way. "What team are you on?"
She looked him up and down, red lipstick fizzing on her lips as she relaxed her shoulders. "What would make you say I want to go on your team?"
Niragi chuckled thickly, and you wondered what he was getting at. "Oh there, easy, sweetheart, I never said I was inviting you..."
You pinched your lips at the nickname, but the woman answered before you could even think about it. "Then why are you talking to me? And I'm not your sweetheart, okay?"
Niragi smiled at this answer. He liked women who were tough, he liked women of character and for a second you wondered if this was a little personal revenge against Chishiya's coming that had very obviously disturbed you.
But just as he was about to respond with a more or less well-placed insult, Chishiya's figure intruded into the discussion, a small smirk perched on his lips as he circled the woman's arms. "I think what An means by that is that we'd love to be a part of your team."
You frowned at the words. Niragi had invited him even less and you knew it would take very little more to make him understand. However, you were surprised that Niragi didn't say anything and somehow you were relieved. It would have been awful to have to face Chishiya and even though having him on your own team would have shot you in the foot, you just hoped that he wouldn't really have the chance to argue with Niragi.
The woman named An said nothing but shook her shoulders to free Chishiya's hands and as he offered another smile, Niragi stared at her as if he had the power to understand where they knew each other from. You would have liked to find out yourself, but the only thing that betrayed their mystery was the small bracelet around both of their wrists that had a chain with a number on it.
It looked a lot like the bracelets you find at the local swimming pool to keep your locker key. Chishiya wore number eleven while An wore number six. Perhaps they were together? Maybe they were two souls who had met in a previous game and decided to team up, or maybe they just happened to be staying at the same place? But then, you didn't understand the point of keeping that bracelet around their wrists. It was strange. Very strange indeed.
"Well, then we only have one more person to complete our team." An then threw out in a voice that was just as disinterested as it was annoyed.
Time until team registration closes: 1 minute.
A few feet away, the other six participants had noticed that they were one too many on their team. The man in the tracksuit found himself overwhelmed by all these players, some of whom he could have done without. After all, what could he possibly do with an old man and two teenage girls? The other two men didn't seem to be in good shape, but it was better than nothing.
No one wanted to volunteer to join your team and it was true that from an outside perspective, you didn't look like much. But at least you were young and fit and you would bet a hundred times more on your team than on theirs.
But time was running out and someone had to step up sooner or later. You didn't know what the consequences would be if the teams didn't form before the deadline, and you weren't really in a rush to find out.
Time until team registration closed: 30 seconds.
"I... I... I'll go with them then," the man in his thirties stammered, and his frail, small body then moved towards you, his gaze darkened by the weight of the world's misery that seemed to weigh down his shoulders.
Well, it wasn't a gift, that one. If you had to choose, you would have much preferred to have the sportsman with you, but whatever.
The time is up. Closing of team registration.  Congratulations, both teams are now formed. Team number one, please head to your base camp located in the east of the park. Name of the base camp: Ninomaru Garden.  Team number two, please head to your base camp located in the western part of the park. Name of the base camp: The Imperial Residence.  The game will start when all players are gathered around their flag.  Good luck.
All right, this meant that the time to get to the base would be the only time available to set a strategy. If the game was going to start the moment all five of you were gathered around your flag, then you had to start thinking about how to steal the other team's flag and how to get it back safely to your side.
The two teams split up and instinctively the other team went to the right and you went to the left. Everyone gave a bit of their opinion and you were surprised to see that no one was trying to disregard the other's plan and every opinion was carefully listened to. An had proposed a strategy in which there would be two teams of two attacking the other side to maximize the chances of capture, and the fifth player would be used to guard the flag.
But it was too dangerous to let only one person be the guard if the opposing team was also attacking in multiples.
Chishiya proposed that two players guard the flag, another player guard the jail in case a player from the other team got trapped, and the two remaining players would attack the other base.
But this would mean losing the advantage of a player stuck at the jail if he had no prisoners to guard.
Each proposed plan had flaws and weaknesses that could cost you the victory in case of mistake. You had confidence in your team, if not for the fragile man who answered to the name of Jun Masahashi who was indeed the weak link of the team. An seemed to be quite athletic, you knew Chishiya well enough to judge his intellectual abilities and Niragi, well there was not much to say except that you could trust him with your life.
Time limit: none.  Game start.
The strategy had been voted. You were proud to think that the plan you came up with was the one that worked the best, and who would have thought that those endless hours spent playing that game as a kid would do any good now.
An was at your side and she had good stamina. Her breathing was steady and regular and she had finally dropped her sunglasses that showed a pretty, virtuous face. The sound of branches cracking under your feet echoed with each step you took, you had to dodge the leaves and step over the trunks of the trees to avoid tripping over the roots.
The man named Jun was already dragging his feet a few feet away, and you had to shake him up a bit to make him understand that this was no time to slow you down. Lives were at stake, and you wouldn't let a guy you didn't even know take away your chance to win.
First you had to get through the forest before you could get to the river, and once you got there, you had to find a way to cross it discretely.
No one knew the area, and despite the fact that the gardens were only open two days a year, not one of you had ever visited the emperor's gardens before. It usually attracted thousands of visitors from all over the country, but none of you seemed interested. This was something of a regret now.
Arriving at the flag a few minutes earlier, the vastness of the imperial residence had taken your breath away. It was neither modest, nor sober, nor modern, but a carnival of wealth and beauty. It looked like an old Japanese temple that was often seen in movies, and the red and gold colors adorned the walls and floors in a bewitching way.
The flag was perched on top of a small stick, planted in the middle of the courtyard, which was surrounded by exotic flowers and colorful bushes. Huge rocks barricaded the north and east entrances, and small paths allowed the other team to sneak in unnoticed. The western entrance was open and immediately you thought it would be difficult to watch that side.
Standing in front of the red flag, which was barely fluttering in the almost non-existent breeze, was a white table with several objects delicately placed on it. First, five one-liter bottles of water that were already making your mouth water under the stifling heat; then, three hunting knives, two watches, a map and finally, a compass.
This same compass that you were now holding in your hands to look for the northwest. The little needle turned in all directions before stabilizing on your right. The race began again and the man didn't even have time to catch his breath, hands on his knees as you and An had already left.
"I... can we... can we take a break?"
The sun was easily sneaking through all those tree branches, and the softness of the shade was welcome. You tried to focus on the path, trying to think as little as possible about the two men who had stayed behind at base camp to protect the flag. You kept telling yourself over and over again that there was absolutely no reason for them to talk about you at such a crucial time, so there was no chance of Niragi trying to figure out how you and Chishiya knew each other.
"I have a side point... please... I'm not going to... I'm not going to hold!"
But after all, they were alone and it was going to be a long time until a threat appeared. Even though you didn't doubt for a second Niragi's associable skills that competed strongly with Chishiya's, one of them would most likely speak up at some point. And talking about the good weather wasn't going to keep them going for several hours, or however long it took you to get that fucking flag back to base camp.
"Girls !"
"What the fuck?" Tu stopped and An did the same. With his breath short and his ribcage rippling with each breath, the man was close to collapsing on the ground littered with dead leaves. He put his hands back on his knees, desperately trying to catch his breath. Drops of sweat trickled down his temple, a pleading look written all over his face as An looked up in exasperation.
She looked just as annoyed as you did, and despite her nonchalance, you decided you liked her. She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, and wrinkling her nose, she took a few steps around as if to determine how much further you had to go. She snatched the compass from your hands and without really paying that much attention to it, you shifted your attention to the man who was struggling to breathe.
"If you can't run with us, we're going to have to leave you behind," you bluffed with a dry, authoritative tone, even though it wasn't true. You needed him, and he was part of the plan, whether you liked it or not. He belonged in this world just as much as you did, and you had to do everything you could to make sure that everyone came out of this unscathed. At least for the time being.
"No, no, please, I just... I just need a minute," the man was almost sobbing, and if he didn't have such a pathetic look plastered on his face, you could have almost helped him regain his composure with some of the breathing exercises you'd learned in your medicinal tenure.
"It's been ten minutes since the game started and you're already crying," An commented in a blank voice as she glanced at the watch around her wrist. She looked like a villain under her raven-black hair and flashing lipstick, and you were just as annoyed as she was, but pointing out the man's clumsiness and misery wouldn't help his condition. With a sigh, she continued, "I'm coming back, don't move."
She commanded like a team leader and not that you minded, she seemed to take this game much more to heart than anyone else here. It was as if the weight of death affected her especially, much more than the others. She took a few steps and disappeared around a tree. It was still hard to trust people you didn't know and had just met, but you were a team and that insisted that for now you had to trust her.

Entry of An and Chishiyaaaaaaaa
I was wondering if my readers would be ok with a love triangle with Chishiya or if you prefer a story really focused ONLY on Niragi...
Please tell me what you want!

It is time to sleep and also time to recount what I've read today. I have read quite a bit today as well. 6 ½ hours. Not bad, right? Heh. I've reached chapter 673 and my reading app says I've read 48% of the novel. Very encouraging! ...or not. I won't be able to finish it this month, it seems. Pity. Either way, it's recap time!
The best news first! Sequence 5!! Our boy is a Nimblewright Master! He's a powerhouse! After all that hard work, we see results! He's on the threshold of demigod, oh wow. It's actually insane. And the corresponding abilities are also terrifying. On the surface they're scary, but used by our sharp, experienced Klein, I can't help but feel pity for his enemies.
Next, what also intrigued me was the appearance of Queen Mystic, Bernadette! Really didn't expect her to have had a hand in Gehrman Sparrow's fake identity. And all the other stuff was also surprising. Like, in no way would I have connected new Tarot Club member, The Hermit, Admiral of Stars Cattleya's teacher and mentor with the only other transmigrator Emperor Roselle's daughter, Bernadette. It just seems to be a part of two different stories. And she figured out who Hero Bandit Dark Emperor was, too! She's quite smart. I like her
The third thing I wanted to talk about was the whole night and dream world that happened in the... Sonia Sea, I believe? I can't remember the actual name. Where the mermaids are. Anyway, that whole thing is so... mysterious and historical, to some extent, my gut says we might return here later. Like, the similarities between this "world" and the Forsaken Land of the Gods make me raise an eyebrow, ya know?
But honestly, idk if it's because I'm unfamiliar with Chinese novels or if that's just the way LOTM is, but my predictions don't really seem to work 8 out of 10 times lol. It's great, it keeps me on my toes lmao
Fourth thing! Derrick’s exploration into Afternoon Town! We actually learned about another King of Angels and some snippets that could be clues to the downfall of the Kingdom of Silver. Like, initially when we got into it, I was more impatient to get back to Klein’s storyline, but then shit went down, and I got completely sucked in lmao. Like?? I commend Derrick’s bravery and knowledge to deal with that situation properly. The fact that he's also not as naive as before is also very enjoyable for me. It doesn't make my heart wince in discomfort when I realize he made a decision that could have horrible consequences later. It's not his fault. His circumstances are shitty, yet he's still a ray of sunshine. But! I gotta say, I'm so proud of the fact that he's learning from his mistakes. He's so lovely. I hope the City of Silver will get out of their miserable situation.
Moving on, I gotta talk a lil bit about unlucky Anderson! Honestly, the fact that he survived his ordeal would make him the luckiest of his crew, I suppose. His personality is so funny tho lmao. Whenever Klein’s Gehrman persona is paired up with a chatty person, I am thoroughly entertained hehe. The dynamic is just hilarious! Also, I gotta admit, at first I was as sus of Anderson as Klein was lol. He really had to start off the interaction with a joke that could be horribly misunderstood, huh? Poor guy lmao
Hmmm what else... oh yeah! Frank Lee! Funnily enough, right before his introduction, I saw a post about him and something about milk, with comments being like "I can never look at milk the same way again" and I was so confused. Until the milk scene. BAHAHAH he's so INSANE, what a madlad. And they call GEHRMAN crazy. Like, if it was just some crazy thoughts, sure. A lot of people have crazy thoughts. But that crazy f*cker is actively experimenting, on a boat in the middle of the sea, with his crewmembers as... test subjects to some degree?? I did Not expect him to be like That, LMAO
Well. A lot of unexpected things happen in this novel, I noticed.
And uhhhh yeah, this seems like most of what I wanted to chat about.
Side note, I was scrolling on tiktok and stumbled on a slideshow with the last scene from volume 1, the one where after Klein... "woke up" (revived), he automatically headed to Daffodil Street - home. But unable to go back there, he went and bought a ticket to Backlund. While waiting, he was struck with the need to see his siblings one last time, realizing that's the reason he took a ticket for such a late time. And there he went, stealing a glance at the people he cares about. Seeing them grieve him. After watching on helplessly, he got an idea. The siblings saw a clown running towards them, with colorful face paint. He had a Chrysanthemum, which represented happiness. All they saw... was a happy smile, an exaggerated smile, a ridiculous smile...
AH MAN, I BAWLED LIKE A BABY AGAIN WHEN I WAS READING IT EARLIER TODAY. LIKE, GIVE ME A BREAK, MAN T^T
Yeah. *cough* until next time!
Praise the Fool!

KOT Ficlet #7 (Kudou Chika/Houzuki Satowa)
The post chapter 110 ficlet I had promised ;)
Since I'm a little late, this is set in a hotel they're staying at for nationals.
This is more of an excuse to write them as hormonal teenagers because I can't do that in my longfic lmao.
⚠️: This is soft PwP majorly, so here's your rating warning! (Rated E for Explicit). Enjoy!
The world is conspiring against her today.
Satowa huffs, standing before the locked door of her room at seven in the evening, jiggling the doorknob at the tiniest hope of it unlocking itself somehow.
But no, it's bolted shut with no give, and the master key was marvelously not available either. Granted, it was her fault. She was certain she knew Hiro’s sleep pattern well enough to predict when the girl would awaken, hence decided to leave her pair of keys in their shared room.
She was evidently wrong. Satowa sighs, resigning to sit herself beside the door till she thought of something else. Not like she didn’t have enough of a jungle gym in her brain already.
It had been two weeks since they.... confessed which is putting it tamely given how they both yelled their feelings out to each other a day apart.
Satowa had expected nothing in return. In that moment, she only remembers seeing red—when Chika bowed his head. She thought a hug was simple enough, something she could explain away later easily—it was a white lie, she was having a sunstroke, whatever works.
But when forced to confess, Satowa had never fathomed his arms wrapping around her, head softly lying against her shoulder. She had never fathomed a reply—the same as hers, with a wide grin across his face—only the day after.
But the progression of events had led to Satowa wanting something more the day after that, like a monkey in an experiment being psychologically wired to demand more candy.
She sighs, resting her head between her knees. Because nothing came. The next day, the day after the next. Even almost two weeks later, they were perfectly normal around each other. Something had changed in Chika, though. He'd become more... mature. His usually fiery eyes were more relaxed, a laid back light in them that watched her carefully, every hour of everyday.
Unsurprisingly, she wasn't the only girl to notice this change. Fifty percent of the school population now saw him, more than ever, as a boy put through horrible circumstances that he never deserved. Some of them cried and bought him lunches and chocolates as an apology for treating him like a criminal.
She was happy for him, when he shyly took their bargain. She really was.
Until it somehow turned into an 'everyday-is-valentines-day' fiesta and Chika's locker was exploding with gifts round the clock. That was a bit much.
And Satowa had predicted him to yell at them to stop—for Christ's sake—throwing food his way as if he were a dying fish. The old Chika would do that.
New Chika, however, simply pursed his lips, chucked the contents of his locker into a bag and offered it to everyone in the club later, insisting they take it home and not eat it here so as to not hurt anyone that the intended recipient wasn't the one taking them.
Satowa never accepts any, feeling a little jaded. “I don’t like sweet things,” is her excuse.
He'd told her he loved her back and for a while, she thought he did. But her confidence began to falter, now that the small smiles usually sent her way were public property.
Maybe he really did love her as a friend and she misunderstood his kindness.
She buries her head deeper into her knees, groaning in irritation. The sound of jingling keys makes her raise her head in relief. Hiro-senpai you savior—
"What...." He eyes her, confused.
"Uh...” Oh, great. Of all the people. "Locked my keys in the room." she smiles awkwardly.
 "The other pair?"
"Hiro-senpai has it. She isn't in."
She eyes her watch. Quarter past Seven. Judging by the breathless huffing, he was returning from an evening run. He wipes the sweat off his brow in a way Satowa thinks Kudou doesn't know is so scandalous.
"Have you seen the practice room downstairs?"
She would have, if her brain wasn't so full of him.
"Wanna check it out now? Since you have time to kill?"
"Why?" She hadn't meant to ask that out loud, but now that it was out of her mouth, she was curious.
He furrows his brows. "Aren't you supposed to ask me where at this point?"
"No," She reiterates, "I'm more interested in why."
Instead of answering her directly, he rattles the keys in her face. "I'd booked it an hour ago. Thought I'd ask glasses, but he's out so..."
Ah, so that’s where Hiro was. Satowa squints, repeating, "So?"
"So," he ruffles his hair. "Accompany me?"
She didn’t need to be told twice.
While Chika busies himself in laying down the Kotos, something he insisted to do for her whenever he was around because 'You weigh half of it and I'd know since I've carried you before.'
(She'd never understood how he suddenly was completely comfortable saying the weirdest things.)
"No, really," She tries, again. "Why?"
He barely looks over his shoulder to shoot her a sheepish glare, playing with the hem of the Koto cover, and staying rooted to his spot.
“In case you decided to come with somebody else.”
"Somebody else..." She narrows her eyes. "Hiro-senpai?"
He scratches his neck, mumbling, "That guy's here..."
"I'm going to need more description than that."
"The flashy guy," he waves it off, as if he doesn't want to say it. "The one from Ichiei. The one that..." He exhales loudly. "The one that hugged you."
She frowns, a little offended, "I'm pretty sure I can defend myself with a kick to the groin. I don't need you to protect me."
"What? No? No!" He defends. "It's not that he'd do anything to you. If anything, I know how much your kicks hurt. I just...” He releases an exhausted sigh. "I don't think you realizes how much attention your—" He scans her frame and averts his gaze, panicked. “you gather."
"I gather attention?” She looks appalled. "Yes, because I'm the person girls are flocking around like felines high on catnip."
He quirks an eyebrow. "Does it bother you?"
She's silent for a second. Then, "No."
 "Are you sure?"
 "Positive."
"I hope you know you look pissed."
 "That's just my face."
His lips twitch into a teasing grin but he ultimately drops the topic.
Satowa hmphs as he lays the Koto before her. She places her fingers gingerly over the strings, humming a familiar tune.
 "That's not 'I'."
"No, it's not, " She replies, lightly thrumming the notes. “It’s a piece I play when I don't feel great."
 "So you are pissed."
 She rolls her eyes.
“At me?" He hazards a guess.
"Yes,” She glares at him, pressing down on the first note to drown both their voices out. "And no."
When music fills the air, Chika sits before her in comfortable silence, listening to her express whatever it was she wanted to. The piece is a high pitched screech in comparison to Satowa's usual delicate notes, bordering between a sacrificial satanic ceremony organ and a frustrated banshee wail.
It helps her channel all her grievances in one place, in a matter of minutes. At some point she forgets Chika is in the room but it doesn't matter because he's in every thought she has.
His voice. His smell. His skin.
Somewhere in between, it transforms her music, into a soft vibrato of a ballroom waltz, like the push and pull of hands and mingling of bodies. She lets the sound calm her nerves. Remind her focus right now should be music and nothing else, like it has always been. One up or down should change nothing between them.
She was dealing with it for all this time, she could sustain another few years if Satowa put her mind to it.
"That...”  His voice cuts through her thoughts. "That sounded pained."
She nods.
"Uh... Are you okay?"
There were many answers to this question. She had done a lot of thinking in the past few days of how to approach the topic of... them. Even saying that sounded strange to her ears.
He edges closer. "Hou—"
"No," She replies. Then a heartbeat later, "No. I don't know."
"You don't know?"
She nods her denial.
"Okay. Okay, that’s fine.”  He says, perplexed. "Let's begin with what's bothering you?"
Mostly you.
When she doesn't reply, he does actually come closer to where she sits.
"I can't help you if you won't talk to me, Houzuki."
She looks at him over wet eyelashes, horrified at how her emotions were really out of control today. She swipes a hand across her eyes and avoids his concerned gaze.
"I have a lot of things to think about." And you being unaware of my feelings or actively ignoring them really isn't helping.
"That's a good start. Things like...?"
"Like how you're so casually avoiding everything that happened a mere two weeks ago." Before her mind catches up with her mouth, the words have been said and all she can do is slam a hand flush against her lips and hope to disappear into oblivion.
The idea of Seppuku sounded very tempting right about now.
"I'm not."
"Not what?" She asks.
"Not avoiding what happened that day,” He purses his lips. "I can't even if I want to."
She suddenly feels a whole lot more vulnerable, kneading fists into her lap. Oh great, she'd made everything even more awkward than it already was. He wasn't even looking at her.
"Actually forget what I just said. I'm tired—" This is exactly why I needed alone time. "—with nationals coming and all."
"That's why I didn't mention it." He mumbles.
"Mention what."
"That day... The confession..... Us. With nationals coming up, you'd want to focus on this. I know how passionate you are,”  His gaze softens. "I've always loved that about you."
The word sends a pleasant tingle down her spine. Us. We. Him and me. Love—
"You mean as a friend?"
"What?"
"Love me,” She repeats robotically. "As a friend."
He raises a brow, amused. "Why does everyone keep asking me that?" He sighs, “Tetsuki, Glasses. Gosh, even Isaki."
Satowa chokes on air. "I-Isaki-san knows?"
"You're lucky you didn't have to answer her questions." His expression looks genuinely pained.
Satowa giggles at the image of Chika smothered by Isaki's bear hugs. His grin widens near impossibly at her. "It's been a while since you smiled normally at me. I've missed it."
"You've had your fair share of beautiful smiles, I think." The visual of girls batting their eyelashes at him turns her mouth sour. Chika is beautiful. She doesn't deserve him. "Enough for at least a decade."
"They aren't you.”
"No. They're better than me."
He looks at her, mouth hanging open like his jaw had unscrewed itself. "Do you genuinely believe that?"
She does. Satowa belonged from a boring world. She lived a mundane life; eating, practicing, sleeping, waking up, practicing, repeat. And Chika contrasted her completely, all wide amber eyes with an adventurous gleam in them.
She loved them so much, it was driving her crazy. And lately her obsession had gotten worse, not that she'd ever admit to it.
"Did I make you feel that way..?" She wants to wipe the hurt off his face. Satowa rises off the floor, dusting her skirt off.
I don't deserve you.
"Don't pity me. I didn't want to push my feelings on you, either way. You saying I love you back there really saved me from the embarrassment. Thank you."
His jaw goes slack. His gaze remained glued to the floor as if it would turn to lava any minute.
He collects himself with a deep breath. "What about my behavior made you think I don't return your feelings?"
She doesn't understand the question. Because though Satowa had basically confessed her undying love and desire to stay by his side forever, she had not for once considered him feeling the same.
So she shrugs, awkwardly. "I'm not worth the effort."
When his gaze lifts off the floor to meet hers, a chill runs up her spine. He looks conflicted, rubbing his neck in consideration . And somehow that makes her want to kiss him so bad her toes curl into themselves.
"You're not... worth the effort...” He reiterates, incredulous.
"Look I'm sorry for how things turned out,” She says, frantically trying to defuse the situation. "I can be a bullhead and say unnecessary things and this wasn't one of my brightest moments. So let's just forget this ever happened? Yeah?"
"How about no?” He replies, blankly. "I want to know what about that day and what the fuck about my confession made you think I haven't been in love with you for the longest time?"
"Look again, no need to—"
"No, you listen," He says, hovering dangerously close to her face, face dark with anger. “I meant what I said that day. I love you. Dammit—I ran back all the way because I was jealous out of my mind with scenarios of someone else finding you play, plus this room is soundproof and they could take advantage of that—like some petty idiot and here you are—"
"You what?” She asks, stunned.
"—convincing me not to love you after you confessed first, by the way. You said you loved me—"
"Kudou...”
"No. Shut the fuck up and listen to me,” Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, hot with anger. Well, hot in more ways than one. "You taught me that there was good in me, that I was redeemable in some way. Even though I've hurt people. I nearly killed Grandpa. "
"You know you didn't do it.” She consoles.
"Not until you came around, no. “He shakes his head. “Not until that day when you told me you wanted me to be happy, to not be hurt, to cherish me. Did the thought never cross your mind that maybe I felt the same?"
She stares at him, blinking. No. It really hadn't because what really was lovable about her? She was a taciturn, obsessed Koto player that cared little outside of her small world.
Why would he—why would anyone love her?
"Oh my God,” He whispers. "You really didn't."
Satowa doesn't reply, she just feels small in front of his large frame towering over her.
"Th-that's because there's nothing you could see in me worth your while! I'm average looking at best, good at nothing except the instrument I've played since I was born. I haven't been on dates, I haven't...k-kissed... "
"Houzu—"
"I'm boring and dull and there's so many better people you could be spending time with because you're amazing and you're way too good looking to be wasting your time on me—"
"Houzuki listen to m—"
"And all these feelings you're feeling are temporary, just because I saved you. Maybe you're grateful for what I said—"
"Satowa."
She stills, both to the deep tone of his voice and the hand gripping her wrist firmly. Her vision goes all blurry; she can't really see him or anything around them, only feel his thumb stroking her palm in a continuous rhythm.
"I'm sorry,” He says, finally. "I'm sorry I had no idea you've been feeling insecure this whole time. God, I really have my head way up my ass like Tetsuki says."
She laughs despite herself. She feels his hold tighten.
"I never could imagine for a second that someone as perfect as you could feel this way."
“P-perfect?”
"You've always been so balanced and confident, I thought I was the only one weighing my self-worth against your standards. I never felt enough for you because you're... You know, you; beautiful, brilliant, talented... I've been so stupid."
She purses her lips. "I'm really not what you make me out to be."
"Maybe. Maybe not. But does it really matter?" She looks up though her eyes felt like she'd doused them in vinegar. "You said you love me. And I definitely love you—no questions asked. Is that not enough for us both?"
"I....” She whispers. "You're right.... It should be."
He releases a long sigh. "So we've finally reached a conclusion?"
"I think.”
"That we may feel mutually undeserving but we still love each other and there's nothing we can do about that?"
"That sounds very embarrassing,” She hides her blush. "But yes."
"Okay. Good. Finally. "
The fingers curled around her wrist make Satowa feel something in the pit of her stomach, pulsating within as he draws closer into her space.
He wraps an arm around her waist, the other leaving her wrist to explore all the other places they could be. Up her arm, her shoulder, the crook of her neck, the flowing strands of her hair.
Satowa's lids drop, mouth opening in a small exhale. "What was that about the soundproof room?"
It's like her words flip a switch.
Instantly, he dives down to capture her lips, pulling her into him. She's so small in his arms, feeling the full height of him as if for the first time. Sensing her discomfort, he puts hands under her thighs, grabbing as she hops off the floor and into his grasp, ankles hooking behind his waist.
"Jesus," he whispers, kissing down her neck like he'd devour her. "How are you so beautiful?"
She throws her head back, letting him nip at her skin. She'll be bruised by tomorrow, but nothing Hiro’s concealer can't hide. "I'm not..." She arches her back when his hands wander a little lower.
"Let me show you," he drawls, kissing her jaw up to her lips. "Let me show you just how beautiful you are to me."
Satowa's suddenly too warm in her blouse, holding her breath as the buttons fall open and his hands traverse inside, tracing the lines of her body. His palms are warm, thumb stroking the underside of her breast, raising goose bumps wherever he touches.
Her arms circle around his neck to sink into his hair, drawing him closer. Kudou walks them to a mahogany desk in the room, putting her carefully down as if she were spun of glass.
He breaks away to look into her eyes tentatively. Satowa whines, scrunching her face to appear as displeased as she feels. He laughs, pinching her nose. His finger moves over her features, swiping against her lips, her chin, her throat, her breast, her stomach.
Satowa's breath hitches in her throat.
Kudou looks at her through hooded eyelids. "Tell me to stop and I will," he says, turning his palm downward, pushing under the belt of her skirt. The expanse of his hand is the entire size of her waist; God, he's so large it's doing things to her. Satowa closes her eyes.
He cups her cheek with the other hand, gently lifting her chin to his gaze. “I need an answer."
She opens her mouth, tried to give him a verbal answer. When one finger touches her swollen lips, she can only manage a strangled moan before nodding furiously.
He goes painfully slow. So slow, that Satowa has to move herself to let him know she's strong enough to handle it. He doesn't relent.
"Kudou," she groans, opening her legs wider for him. "God, please I'm going to lose it."
Sensing her urgency, he puts another finger in. Satowa gasps, arching her back till she almost hits the desk. Kudou catches her in time, cradling her head softly.
He pumps slowly, letting the rhythm build within her. It's too much stimulation for her and Satowa bites back the sound threatening to rip its way out her throat.
He drags her arm away, shaking his head solemnly at her. "I want to hear you." He quickens his pace, drawing a shocked gasp from the girl. "I want to know what I'm doing to you."
"Please, please I'm —" Satowa throws her arm out like a child, begging for him to hold her. She doesn't know what she's feeling, but it’s strong, like a jug full to the brim. Like a chalice that's about to spill.
He responds immediately, wrapping one arm around her waist and holding her to his chest. The other hand goes faster and faster till Satowa bends, throwing her head back with a scream.
"Yes, yes. I'm so—" She's barely making any sense. "I don't know—I feel—yes, there, right there—" She pushes down on his fingers herself, feeling them touch a place that has her mouth hang open wordlessly.
Taking the cue, he searches for it and presses, deeper into her than before and Satowa screams, muscles rippling under her skin. She clenches her teeth, letting the wave send her body in a frenzy. It's over in a flash.
Satowa slumps in his arms, head thudding loudly against his chest. She's still for a moment.
"Hey." Kudou breaks the silence, wrapping an arm around her tighter. "You okay?"
She exhales, slowly blinking her eyes open to his worried gaze. Satowa taps on his shoulder, dragging him to her.
"Kiss." She commands like a petulant child. He replies, grinning, slowly rolling her lips into his mouth, rubbing her back in a motion that almost lulls her to sleep.
"You're so beautiful," he says, playing with the strands of her hair that fall over his shirt. "The prettiest."
Satowa flushes, swatting at his hand before noticing something hard touch her core. She shudders on instinct, looking up at his sheepish gaze.
"We should...uhh...” Satowa offers vaguely, though she really doesn't know what to do.
"I'll...take care of it later." He replies, embarrassed.
"But we could—" He puts a finger over her lips, wincing in pain as she moves over him.
"Not yet," he groans, reaching down to kiss her desperately. "Today was just for you. I wanted you to see the depth of my feelings. Just what I want to do to you."
Her eyes darken again, she yanks him down by his collar, kissing a chain up his throat. He gulps.
"Then teach me next time," she touches the tent forming in his jeans. He whimpers, rubbing instinctively into her palm. "So I can understand what I want to do."
He nods frantically before moving away from her to breathe. It takes them both a moment to gather themselves before they decide to move. He helps Satowa off the table. Her feet wobble uncontrollably, an uncomfortable space forming between her legs. She grunts, smoothing the pleats of her skirt.
"Wanna play something?" Kudou gestures to the Koto, tapping at his watch. “We have another half hour left."
Though she'd love to just go up to her room and shower, Satowa can't deny the excitement in his eyes. She smiles. "Fifteen minutes."
His grin is the widest she's seen since the day he confessed.
They spend more of their time fooling around rather than really playing, not that Satowa minds.
Satowa doesn't really like sweet things, she concludes, unless it comes wrapped like a Christmas present under a tree in the form of a bright haired, bright smiled boy.
A candy named Kudou Chika.

Meet Jean Passepartout
(This is the second book post today. First post, third post, fourth post)
As for Passepartout, he was a true Parisian of Paris. Since he had abandoned his own country for England, taking service as a valet, he had in vain searched for a master after his own heart. Passepartout was by no means one of those pert dunces depicted by Molière with a bold gaze and a nose held high in the air; he was an honest fellow, with a pleasant face, lips a trifle protruding, soft-mannered and serviceable, with a good round head, such as one likes to see on the shoulders of a friend. His eyes were blue, his complexion rubicund, his figure almost portly and well-built, his body muscular, and his physical powers fully developed by the exercises of his younger days. His brown hair was somewhat tumbled; for, while the ancient sculptors are said to have known eighteen methods of arranging Minerva’s tresses, Passepartout was familiar with but one of dressing his own: three strokes of a large-tooth comb completed his toilet.
It would be rash to predict how Passepartout’s lively nature would agree with Mr. Fogg. It was impossible to tell whether the new servant would turn out as absolutely methodical as his master required; experience alone could solve the question. Passepartout had been a sort of vagrant in his early years, and now yearned for repose; but so far he had failed to find it, though he had already served in ten English houses. But he could not take root in any of these; with chagrin, he found his masters invariably whimsical and irregular, constantly running about the country, or on the look-out for adventure. His last master, young Lord Longferry, Member of Parliament, after passing his nights in the Haymarket taverns, was too often brought home in the morning on policemen’s shoulders. Passepartout, desirous of respecting the gentleman whom he served, ventured a mild remonstrance on such conduct; which, being ill-received, he took his leave. Hearing that Mr. Phileas Fogg was looking for a servant, and that his life was one of unbroken regularity, that he neither travelled nor stayed from home overnight, he felt sure that this would be the place he was after. He presented himself, and was accepted, as has been seen.
At half-past eleven, then, Passepartout found himself alone in the house in Saville Row. He began its inspection without delay, scouring it from cellar to garret. So clean, well-arranged, solemn a mansion pleased him; it seemed to him like a snail’s shell, lighted and warmed by gas, which sufficed for both these purposes. When Passepartout reached the second story he recognised at once the room which he was to inhabit, and he was well satisfied with it. Electric bells and speaking-tubes afforded communication with the lower stories; while on the mantel stood an electric clock, precisely like that in Mr. Fogg’s bedchamber, both beating the same second at the same instant. “That’s good, that’ll do,” said Passepartout to himself.
He suddenly observed, hung over the clock, a card which, upon inspection, proved to be a programme of the daily routine of the house. It comprised all that was required of the servant, from eight in the morning, exactly at which hour Phileas Fogg rose, till half-past eleven, when he left the house for the Reform Club—all the details of service, the tea and toast at twenty-three minutes past eight, the shaving-water at thirty-seven minutes past nine, and the toilet at twenty minutes before ten. Everything was regulated and foreseen that was to be done from half-past eleven a.m. till midnight, the hour at which the methodical gentleman retired.
Mr. Fogg’s wardrobe was amply supplied and in the best taste. Each pair of trousers, coat, and vest bore a number, indicating the time of year and season at which they were in turn to be laid out for wearing; and the same system was applied to the master’s shoes. In short, the house in Saville Row, which must have been a very temple of disorder and unrest under the illustrious but dissipated Sheridan, was cosiness, comfort, and method idealised. There was no study, nor were there books, which would have been quite useless to Mr. Fogg; for at the Reform two libraries, one of general literature and the other of law and politics, were at his service. A moderate-sized safe stood in his bedroom, constructed so as to defy fire as well as burglars; but Passepartout found neither arms nor hunting weapons anywhere; everything betrayed the most tranquil and peaceable habits.
Having scrutinised the house from top to bottom, he rubbed his hands, a broad smile overspread his features, and he said joyfully, “This is just what I wanted! Ah, we shall get on together, Mr. Fogg and I! What a domestic and regular gentleman! A real machine; well, I don’t mind serving a machine.”

@blasterdiablo Sent: An 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐀 Sentence Starter (Accepting!)
❝  i’m  allergic  to  dogs.  ❞  [Junos to Luquier for Club lololol, junos trying to convince himself he’s not hurt by this absolute betrayal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This idiot...
Luquier had thought after their last encounter that night she’d never see this guy again, let alone so far away from the palace. Though, she should have predicted the possibility considering the beast she had tamed by pure accident. The fact it happened at all was still surprising to the young vampire assassin. In all her years she’s never seen a High Beast abandon their master, especially when they were facing down an enemy.
Then again, this noble idiot wasn’t much of a master, was he? That much was evident by the pathetic tone lacing his words. He might be trying to act tough, but she could see it in this wine-red eyes of his that he was upset beyond belief she stole his dear canine away. Serves him right for what he put her through that night. The fact he’s not a dead corpse right now was a blessing Luquier was giving him considering he wasn’t her target at the moment. No need to waste her energy when no payment was to be delivered after.
Besides, she’s sure he’ll be up for bounty again eventually. It seems like with all the trouble he causes and gets into, he’s a walking target for assassins and mercenaries. Noble vampires had no use for weaklings among their ranks. In fact, she’s heard a rumor the only reason the current prince of the vampires was still alive was because of his rare royal blood. Guess he’ll be an easy target if some vampire or human wants to stage a coup of some kind, something Luquier suspects will be the case at some point in the future.
Vampires...Humans...They all just loved getting into fights with each other for power. And while she has a preference towards the idea of the humans winning, regardless of which side wins she is sure she’ll benefit from it. With both sides hating each other, she’ll always have clientele, after all. As long as she had that, she'll continue to further her own position in the world. That was all that really mattered, anyway.
Tumblr media
“Is that so? Well, I guess you won’t be needing your precious beast back, will you Lord Idiot?” The assassin smirks, petting the beast she had learned was called Fullbau’s head. She was enjoying seeing this idiot squirm. It was almost as satisfying as beating him to a pulp.
Almost.
“You take can your leave now that your business here is finished.” She assumes he was just here to try and get his dog back, after all. Why else would he willingly seek out someone who was hired to kill him before? “Be grateful you’re not my target today. You might not be so fortunate the next time our paths cross.”

RIP Showtime
Tumblr media
Per The AV Club: Premium cable has lost an icon today, with Deadline saying that Showtime set to be killed off and replaced with a newly rebranded network called Paramount+ With Showtime—which, let’s be clear, may be one of the worst rebrandings of all time.
I’m not saying I predicted the future, but just four days ago, I was asking how long the network might have left considering how largely unwatched the majority of it’s series catalog is nowadays.
I will say, I’m not celebrating this.  For starters, per the Hollywood Reporter, there are lots of layoffs happening because of this merger.  Also, within the last few days, shows such as Let the Right One In, American Gigolo, American Rust, Kidding, and On Becoming a God in Central Florida have all been removed from Showtime’s streaming service and apparently won’t be part of the “Paramount+ with Showtime”.
Also according to the Hollywood Reporter, “Showtime is expected to let the rights holders for the impacted programs shop the series. Let the Right One In, for example, is already being shopped.”  Will this also apply to some of their earlier shows like Masters of Sex, Nurse Jackie, The Big C (shows that were removed from Showtime’s streaming service years ago)?  I certainly hope so.

hi, idk if you answered this before, but how did you manage to become self-employed by 24? also any career building tips in general?
Hi love! Well, I'm nearly 25 now (Leo baby here, lol) and have been self-employed since around 21/22 full-time. I would say the main factors at play are a combination of starting my career as early as possible (first real internship in the fashion industry at almost 16 and starting freelancing at around 19), earning a full scholarship to a top private university, and freelancing throughout college allowed me to have a lot of time and freedom to work on my skills, build my networks/portfolio, etc. (I'm not going to discount all of the privileges and resources I've had working in my favor, including the ability to begin my postgrad life with zero debts, that would be disingenuous, for certain).
In terms of career advice, I would say here are some of my most important tips:
Hope this helps xx

Halfway through the Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow 02/10/2023
Today 2.10 I had my first meeting with Anni. We met up at Oodi to discuss the first half of the book we decided to read for the book club. Prior to this we planned that we will read about 150 pages of the book and have a discussion about that. Anni had a minor hiccup as she only succeeded to read 100 pages, but in the end that didn’t affect anything, because we still got to have some really good discussion about the book.
Firstly, we started by discussing our general feelings of the book. I was really relieved to hear that we had a lot of familiar feelings and thoughts. One of the biggest things we felt greatly about was how the book felt really like a children's story. This differed a lot from our expectations. It really seemed like the book would be about a girl named January who will be traveling through different worlds that she finds inside of magical doors. The name of the book really implied that this might be the case. Instead the story shaped out to be completely something else.
Since both of us read only the first half, we made some predictions regarding what will happen in the last half of the book. One good example of our predictions is that currently January’s dad has gone missing and is presumed dead, but we actually don't believe in this. The origin of his death is really hazy and also there was no body found, and you know what they say, if someone ends up dead in the book and no body is found is the character actually dead? There were also some predictions that we did not agree on, for example Anni believes that the main character will marry a boy named Samuel at the end, I however don't think like that at all. What makes me think like that, is the fact that the story doesn't imply a romantic plot. I really didn’t see Samuels and January’s interactions as potential love interests. And I really hope that they will not be paired up in the end, for the sake of a forced romantic “happy ending”.
We also discussed quite a bit about characters, especially about a really crucial character Mr. Locke. He is the adoptive father of January and he has a really twisted relationship with her. Most of the time he treats her as his property and as if she is a porcelain doll for the display. He is clearly a power figure and to our most disappointment he uses his power wrongly and unkindly towards January. But what is interesting about him is that even though we don’t like Mr.Locke, he is one of the most interesting and thought-provoking characters in this book.
As the time started to near the one hour mark, we decided to google some general book club questions. As an example, we discussed our favorite and least favorite parts of the book so far. This is fascinating because our opinions now might change with the other half of the book. And it will be really nice to reflect about that. Some other questions we had were:
Would you want to read another book by this author?
Did the book impact your mood?
Is the title of the book good and does it tell something about the story?
What were some things you were hoping to happen?
And lastly, we discussed the author Alix E. Harrow. This book contained an academic side to it, that was unfortunately very poorly written. It tried to mimic an academic paper, but it was really abstract and didn’t really give any information. On top of that the language felt all over the place and chaotic, but not in a good way. (I will mention though, that some parts were really beautiful and I actually highlighted multiple of passages).  And it left us questioning about author's background, and finds out she has a bachelors and masters degree in history at the University of Vermont. Along with that we found out that this is her first novel and that explains some of our opinions.
Overall, we thought that it’s good we have this assignment, because it's pushing us to finish the book and in some way to step out of our comfort zone. The book is good, but we both have read better. Our next book club meetup is in two weeks from today.
Additionally I want to add that this was extremely fun and I’m looking forward to our next meeting.
