I just remembered that Katniss and Peeta actually joked around a lot in the first book even pre-confession and it just makes me go 🥹. They’re such good friends! He makes her laugh and she’ll joke around back! If the reapings hadn’t happened and Peeta finally got the courage to talk to her he was one joking conversation away from becoming friends.

yup! they actually compliment each other so well personality wise, and you can see they had the makings of two people who would genuinely click with one another - even if it weren’t for the star crossed lovers angle.

i always think about the little moment in the parade before their first games where peeta says something about katniss looking good in flames and then smiling at her, and she basically says that it’s so sweet and shy that an unexpected warmth rushes through her… like sweet girl you have a big fat crush and it’s okay.

and even before that they have the little quip like i’ll rip your cape off if you rip off mine… it really seems to come easy between them. one can only imagine how much easier it would’ve been if it weren’t for the games and the war and everything else, but i think that if one of them had just reached out to the other then it would’ve happened anyway (as you said)
