Call Me Josh Chapter 23

“Something must be done!” Rabbi Leary thunders to the group of Rabbis with him. They come from all over the country to meet and discuss the ‘Joshua situation '. “He eats with sinners and gentiles. He welcomes those who are unclean. His speeches are drawing bigger and bigger crowds. The people love him. Soon he will be untouchable.”

“He heals the sick.” One of the younger rabbi’s offers. They are meeting in the rabbi’s huge synagogue. He calls it Temple Beth Israel. It is luxurious, the biggest synagogue in the country.

Rabbi Leary sneers. “A parlor trick.”

“We need to go see him, in person. Find the crack in his amour. He can’t be as perfect as he seems.” Another offers.

“No that is a good idea.” He starts to pace around the room, from the stand, gold plated, to the back of the room and the wall with gold accents. “Where is he?”

Someone looks it up online. “He is scheduled to be at the hospital this afternoon.”

“Then we will be too. Let’s go men. We must protect Judaism from any who wish to change her.”

The youngest rabbi, Rabbi Nicklaus, thinks, “And your profit from it.” As he follows them out.

He walks through the hospital with his followers, Peter, John, Judas, Tomas, James, Andrew, Matt, Jude, Bart, Phil, Simon, and Jim. These twelve are his closest. Marta, Maria, and Larry, Margret, also stay close to him. Today they are joined by a group of Rabbis.

“Hello men, have you came to do a mitzvah for the needy here? Have you come to show compassion to those less fortunate then yourselves?” He then turns to his disciples. “You see, they speak of compassion, but it is reserved for those of their same social standing. To get their hands dirty doing real missionary work, to touch the unclean, that is beneath them.”

“How dare you say such to me?” Rabbi Leary hisses.

“Have I said anything that wasn’t true? Show me I am wrong Rabbi Leary, Rabbi Nicklaus,” he nods to the youngest. “Words you have a plenty, with your flowing prayers and long recitations from Torah. Actions speak louder though. We are going to the AIDS ward. Will you join us?” He looks sternly into each of their eyes before starting towards the elevators. He looks back with sadness at their frozen forms.

They take hands, say prayers. They wipe sweaty brows. One young man stares at him. “You, your Joshua. I saw you on the television. You could heal me, if you wished.”

Joshua smiles at him. “I wish.” He touches him and looks up to heaven, “My Father I thank You for using me to heal our son.” He looks down and meets his eyes. “You are well. Go and sin no more.” The man jumps from his bed, grabbing the back of his gown as not to expose himself, and starts to dance around the room. The commotion brings several nurses in.

“What is all this?” One sternly asks.

“I am healed! Joshua healed me!”

The doctor is called in. Test show this man, who’s white blood cells were so low they barely registered, now has a normal level. Are his opportunistic infections are gone! He really is completely healthy.

After, as they are preparing to leave the hospital, a group of friends, pushing another in a wheelchair, stop him. The Rabbi’s have rejoined them.

“Please sir, will you heal our friend. He was born unable to walk.” He looks back at the rabbi’s and, moved by their faith says,

“Your sins are forgiven.” To the young man in the wheelchair. An outcry from the rabbi’s.

“Who do you think you are? Only God has the power to forgive sins!”

“Which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven or,” He turns back to the man, “Arise and walk.” He takes his hand and lifts him to his feet. They watch as his crooked legs are straightened. As he stands on his feet for the first time in his life.

The man stares down at them and then over to the man that has healed him. “I can walk?” His friends watch, hands over their mouths, tears running down their eyes.

“Walk, skip, jump, run, anything you wish.” Joshua replies, a twinkle in his eye.

The man takes a step, then another. He is laughing and crying as a crowd gathers. He calls out, “Joshua, the miracle man, he brought life to my legs and my soul.” He runs around the lobby as the onlookers clap and cheer. With a scowl, the rabbi’s leave. Joshua watches them. Rabbi Nicklaus stops.

“I would like to know more about your work. May we meet somewhere?”

“The park tonight.” He nods and hurries to catch up with the others.

The sit on a park bench alone. “You want to know about the coming kingdom.” Joshua states. Nicklaus nods. “How to enter it?”

“Yes, I know you are from God.”

“You must be born again.”

The other man frowns. “How is that possible? A person can’t reenter their mother and be reborn.”

“There are two births. One physical, the other spiritual. God is Spirit, so those that wish to enter His Kingdom must be born anew in the Spirit. Be transformed from the inside out. Living a life fully devoted to and honoring God.”

(Morpheus x Prophetess Reader)

Synopsis: Warrens orders you to summon Morpheus. When you don't, he takes matters into his own hands.

“He doesn’t even know I’m here,” you seethe, the cuffs cutting into your skin. “Your plan already failed.”

He raises a single brow and straightens. “You think I didn’t account for uncooperativeness?” He walks to where a bag lays and takes out a tome. “Let’s not forget that Roderick Burgess summoned Morpheus accidentally. Do you think he didn’t write everything down?”

“It still won’t work,” you say. “You really think Dream of the Endless can be trapped again? You think he’s that weak—that stupid?”

Warrens sighs. “You don’t seem to grasp what I’m saying.” He moves toward a tarp on the ground. “Stupidity or weakness doesn’t matter.” He grips it. “Not when I have his precious little prophetess.”

He yanks it away, and your heart stops.

Sigils and symbols cover the asphalt. You recognize them immediately. They’re the same ones that will summon Morpheus—ones to trap him within that circle—just like Burgess did.

Warrens’ words finally settle within your bones.

You’re leverage.

“No,” you whisper.

There must be a way to stop this. There’s no way Warrens has the power to summon Morpheus at all. He’d need the abilities of a being far stronger; someone touched by an Endless, someone—

Someone like you.

Warrens regards you slowly. “Seems you finally realized just how crucial you are.”

He steps toward you, and all you can do is push back against the pipe to try and stay away.

He grabs your cheeks roughly, squeezing the cut on your face, your blood oozing into a small bowl he retrieved.

A small whimper slips from your mouth as you desperately try to contain it.

“You’re really quite versatile,” he muses. “If you think about it. You’ll be the reason Morpheus dies.”

It's dizzying. But Warrens keeps droning on.

“First, you told him he’s going to die, then you’re bait, then he hears your voice summon him,” he drinks the contents of the bowl after mixing your blood with other ingredients, “Morpheus stays put ‘cause I’ll kill you if he doesn’t, Morpheus dies, and then,” he glances over his shoulder, “you die.”

You fight with the cuffs as Warrens begins the spell. And you’re nauseous when your voice comes out of his throat.

He’s accounted for everything. You’d call him crazy if his plan wasn’t about to work.

You have to stop him before Morpheus appears.

The pipe’s too steady, and the cuffs won't break.

Bracing yourself, you push the base of your thumb until pain radiates up your arm.

After slipping out, you clutch your hand to your chest and sprint to Warrens.

He stops chanting.

You can't react before he plunges the knife into your stomach.

Your scream intensifies when he wraps an arm around you to hold you upright. You aren’t sure why he’s gripping you so tightly until your name's called.

Your eyes trail from the drawn circle to the person standing in it.

Morpheus. Fury in every feature.

“You’d be wise to stay where you are, Dream King,” Warrens says. “Unless you want me to activate the ruins on this dagger and inject her with cyanide.”

“He’ll kill me anyways—”

You let out another yell when he pushes the knife deeper.

“He won’t risk it, will you?” He directs the question to Morpheus, who stands there, hate burning in his gaze. “I thought not.”

He lets go of you, and you crumple to the ground.

He eyes Morpheus carefully.

“Remember, all it takes is one word, and she’s dead.”

You want to tell Morpheus to run, use whatever powers he has, and save himself. You urge him to flee through your eyes, but he is steady on you.

“Let her go, and I will do as you wish.” Morpheus finally speaks.

“No can do,” Warrens says. “You being my puppet isn’t what I had in mind.”

“And what is it you desire?” Morpheus asks, glancing between you and Warrens.

Warrens opens his book. “A lot of things, but right now?” He meets Morpheus' gaze head-on. “I want to finish what started all that time ago.”

As soon as the first words of the spell spill from Warrens’ mouth, Morpheus hunches over and collapses.

The symbols glow white, and Warrens' voice rises.

You can’t focus on much, your sight blurs.

The world won’t survive more time without Morpheus. But maybe there’s still something you can do.

You studied enough magic and learned your powers inside and out—one little modification and Morpheus would survive.

You reach out to him, fingers stained red.

Warrens is too far into the ritual to stop but isn't concerned with you. Morpheus’ crumpled form holds his attention as the sigils shine.

You rub your finger across the asphalt, new blood drawn the harder you press.

The magic ignites your addition, pouring into that one sign, and shoots up your arm.

You never felt pain quite like it. Like you’re burning from the inside.

“What have you done!” Warrens shouts, storming toward you.

Then he freezes.

Morpheus is behind him, shadows stretching from his body.

“Please.” Warrens trembles, darkness winding up his legs. “Please!”

“You do not deserve mercy.”

The shadows swallow him whole, the beginning of Warrens’ screams snuffed out.

And then Morpheus is kneeling beside you, cradling your head.

There’s that fear.

But it isn’t for his own demise.

It’s for yours.

I May Have Been Wrong About Lambert and Sreng

Previously I've accused Lambert of being responsible for the conquest and ethnic cleansing of southern Sreng. After reviewing the relevant information however, I believe that may have been an erroneous assumption (one which, in my defense, both Fire Emblem wikis also make). Instead it seems the annexation happened no later than 896, during the reign of King Banfig.

From the in-game book Military History of the Partholon, which is found in Chapter 10 of Azure Gleam:

Great Tree Moon, Year 896 Banfig confers the northern part of his territory on Laetita [Gautier]. She is given the title of margrave and tasked with defending Faerghus's border. Laetita sets to work strengthening defenses in the north, constructing strongholds throughout the Ruska Mountains on the border with Sreng, and reclaiming the Lance of Ruin from the Church of Seiros.

It's not clear where the border was before the conflict in which Laetita distinguished herself. The book seems to offer conflicting information

Harpstring Moon, Year 892 The Sreng people launched a large scale invasion. They crossed the Ruska Mountains in the north and descended south into Faerghus. King Banfig built a string of strongholds along the north of his domain, from Blaiddyd to Fraldarius, including Conand Tower.

The first paragraph would seem to imply that the border was already at the Ruska Mountains when Sreng invaded. However, the placement of Conand Tower in the north of Banfig's domain seems to dispute that. The phrasing "along the north of his domain, from Blaiddyd to Fraldarius" seems to imply that "[Banfig's] domain" is referring to the whole Kingdom, not just Blaiddyd territory. Conand Tower is located in the southern part of modern Fraldarius territory, far to the south of the Ruska Mountains, which would seem to imply that Faerghus had not yet annexed most of the peninsula.

Here's a map for reference:

Of course none of this changes that Lambert launched another invasion of Sreng; nor that Itha, Gautier, and most of Fraldarius territory are sitting on land that once belonged to Sreng and is now devoid of its native inhabitants. It would simply mean that Lambert is not the king who annexed the southern part of the peninsula.

It's also possible that it's explicitly stated somewhere that Lambert is responsible for the annexation. I'm not going to subject myself to Azure Gleam again just to find out. For now I'm agnostic on the matter.
