Confessions of a Recovering Genre-phobic - 1/6/2024

Hey Whores, This is my first official attempt at being a music critic???? Is that what I'm doing IDK. Pretty much I'm listening to a bunch of music and we just gonna vibe as I talk about what I like and what I don't and thats what I do with my life apparently. Its almost like I enjoy writing or some shit. anyway lets find a fun gif to make this an eyecatcher.

That's All (1959) - Bobby Darin

Genre: Traditional Pop, Vocal Jazz Length: 35:17 (12 Tracks)

As mentioned previous many of these albums were added based on a single song that I like from the creator. In this case this was most likely added for the A-side 2 Beyond The Sea. You know the one.

Considering that I thought this song was song by Dean Martin it goes to show I don't have a firm grasp on a lot of 1950s music and also this kind of crooning jazz style. I don't dislike it by any means but its also not something that sticks with me.

Trad Pop is a beautiful Over-Medium Egg and I am but a well oiled Teflon Pan.

Nevermind (1991) - Nirvana

Genre: Grunge, Alt Rock Length: 42:36 (12 Tracks)

Its kinda weird that I've never listened to this album all the way through. Growing up as a early zoomer my musical taste was, just like the musicians I grew up with, heavily influenced by the Alt Rock of the 90s.

I didn't grew up listening to Nirvana but as I have gotten older I realize how much certain bands have always permeated the culteral membrane. An osmosis of influence if you will.

Some songs are instantly recognizable 'Smells like Teen Spirit', 'Come as You Are', 'Lithium', and as I put this playlist on in the background listening to this album is almost vulgar. When I first heard these songs there were like a evocation. A mystical litany in a foreign script learning the grooves and connatations of there sound. It was mysteicism learning a small portion of a greater whole. and listening to the full album I almost shy away from it. Feeling unable to process the level of depth I have felt from these other songs.

That becomes the issue of music. Is that some music is too specific, too culteral, for you to have a rational mind over. Nirvana to me feels like home in the same way Jennifers Body does. Its a Core Memory that I had forgettin. A past life I have barely known.

To stop being esoteric there is something incredible about this music. Cobrain has such a distinctive voice, as if he is screaming and droning on at the same time, Checked out and locked in. The lyrics are sardonic and evocative, full of word-play and poesis. The Music almost feels subdued for something that is literally hard rock.

It like screaming underwater, its like the pleasure of moaning over a toothache, Its the savage beast making music. There is so much sadness and anger and self-rightousness that you want to scream the lyrics in your car because its the pain and pleasure of a loose tooth, of poking a bruise, of smashing a window. It is letting go and moving through.

And I just fucking love it. Big feels.

The Writing on the Stall (Original Soundtrack) (2022) - Caitlin Cook

Genre: Novelty, Comedy, (honestly low-key nerd folk) Length: 26:22 (7 Tracks)

Listened to on a whim and what a lovely time.

Based on varous Bathroom Graffiti, Caitlin Cook manages to make something equal parts funny, sincere, and surprisingly poignant. Do you like Bo Burnam cause that got that energy.

If anything it reminds me a lot of the comedy videos of the early 2000s, the type of silly songs that I watched as a child. Like the kinda problamatic People of Walmart.

This really pleasant to listen to it reminded me of a lot of the novelty music that I would listen to with my mom and also "Thank god for Sluts" is going on permanant rotation.

Fine Line (2019) - Harry Styles

Genre: Pop Rock Length: 46:37 (12 Tracks)

Technically Recommended by a friend from work, me listening to this album is a long time coming.

Fine Line, is the second studio album by Harry Styles and if wikipedia is to be believed tends to have quite a bit of genre blending in it.

I don't have a lot to say about it, Styles has a fantastic voice and his energy and styling in this era is pushing more torwards an androgynous rock star image very much in the vein of Bowie and similar. Which I actually kind of like. Styles has been purposely vague on whether or not he wants to fuck dudes which is fine. And also dare I say it I think that its healthy for us as a society not to gatekeep GNC as exclusively queer. That if a straight cis gendered man wants to put on a dress well baby thats praxis. But also like do you want to make out??????? 🥺👉👈 just asking.

The music itself has this kind of almost folksy pop to it. Gentle, meloncholic, also kinda horny. Its kinda a horny album still into it through. Ultimately this experiment goes to show that I need to work on how to describe albums. es muy difficil.

A Mi Me Gusta (1993) - Los Del Rio

Genre: Latin Pop, Flamenco? (more on that later) Length: 50:45 (12 Tracks)

Because I spent to much time figuring this out the english translation is 'I Like It (1993) - Those From the River. so do with that what you will.

Los Del Rio if you don't know are the one that made the song 'Macarena' you know the one.

(I'm trying to avoid using gifs stylisticly for these blogs but one for fun shouldn't hurt. we'll see how this evolves going forward)

and talk about a One-Hit Wonder. Its the only song that pops up when you search 'Los del Rio songs'. The album is listed as there first album on the wikipedia page for A mi me gusta despite the fact that they have at least 13 other albums before that (possible 20 i'm not going to spend 2 hours delving into there discography to figure that out). and I find this the most telling is that they include three seperate version of the song on the album. It both there opener and closer and you know what it absolutely slaps so I don't blame them.

They also are listed for this album as Latin Pop and Flamenco? I was a pretty big fan of Ricky Martin and Enrique Inglesias growing up, (hi I like fucking men alot) and I'm sorry but this is definetly pop music. This is folk or traditional. Los Del Rio almost exclusively seems to make traditional latin dance music which isn't a problem I'm a big fan of ballroom dance I grew up listening to this kind of music. Baby you can light *my* fire.

Flamenco is also an interesting descriptor. Discogs tends to list there albums in the sub-genres of Flamenco and Rumba. Which seems accurate but if you played a song by them for me It wouldn't have been my first guess.

Tbf I am not an expert on the distinction between traditional spanish folk music because its complicated and the next time someone uses the phrase Dorian Mode my eyes will bleed and I really hate having to deal with bloodstains. Suffice to say this is a much more accessable type of latin dance music. Its very much easy listening, you could definetly dance to it. But its also the type of thing I could imagine your abuela playing while she makes dinner. lowkey vibes.

I realize that I have been incredible vague about wha this song sounds like so close your eyes. Imagine your sitting with your gran-tio and peeling the paper skin away from the tomatillos that he grew in his garden. your sitting on the cool concrete of the back porch and he plays some latin music from the radio as your fingers become sticky from the sappy flesh of those purple and green fruits. It smells like chopped wood and ants. As you finish your peeling Macarena begins playing. ¡Oye!

Thats what this album sounds like.

Another interesting point is that Los Del Rio is a Spanish Band and not a Mexican Band and thats really interesting to me. right? because as an American I really don't think about Spain.

Intellestial I understand that things like Latin Dance music are a product and history of Spain, that there are a culteral export its ahrd for me as a person to seperate this type of music and language from a hispanic or latino lense. Its interesting understanding that there are divergent cultures despite sharing language and other culteral facits. I assume much in the same way that being an american that speaks english I live a very different but somewhat famalier life from an australian or brit.

Deep thoughts to be had and I really need to explore international music more.

Through the Deep Dark Valley (2012) - The Oh Hellos

Genre: Folk Rock, Indie Folk Length: 39:14 (11 Tracks)

The Oh Hellos are a Brother-Sister Folk Duo and Through the Deep Dark Valley is as they say

"The Oh Hellos' first full-length album, "Through the Deep, Dark Valley," is a self-contained concept album, and so for best results should be listened to in its entirety, in chronological order, in one sitting."

I'm not going to get to deep into said concept. Just understand that its playing with the parable of the prodigal son. Oh I'm sorry are you not religious, (by which I mean speciically mean Christian). Well that sucks for you. There album after this is named after the Screwtape Letters and if you don't know what that is well clearly your a fake jesus fan. Just saying.

I tease but it is interesting to hear how the religious imagery effects the music. A few publications discuss how there is celtic influence in there folk music which is pretty easy to identify but it should also be mentioned that there is a clear gospel sound to the work. I sent the song 'I was Wrong' to my bestie and he was like bro why are you sending me gospel worship music at three o'clock in the moring.

I want to be clear that thats not a particuler problem for me. Gospel has always had a place in folk. Thats why Amazing Grace is listed as American Traditional and also I can't take upbridge at christian imagedry in work because I would also be taking pot shots at fucking lady gage. And thats mother.

This is a really nice sounding album and it really boils down to matters of taste. Do you like the Lumineers? Mumford and Sons? Of Mice and Monsters? yeah. You like that kind of layered acoustic instrumentals and round singing that intesifies torwards the end of the song. Due you like vaguely religious lyrics. Your'll love this its great.

Swipe Right For Vintage (2015) - Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox

Genre: Jazz (Its Complicated and will get into it) Length: 45:20 (12 Tracks)

Ok whores I need to explain what PMJ is right?

Postmodern Jukebox is a 'retro musical collective'. What does that mean. Basically the main guy Scott Bradlee, (not to be confused with the other arranger Scott Bradley from like the 30s), arranges popular songs of the modern age into retro styles. Typical Jazz, Swing, and Big Band, but he also has done songs in traditional pop, doo-wop, and even klezmer. The term jukebox is pretty clear here the vibe of the band is very much playing around with the idea of a modern pop standard. Taking beloved pop classics from the 80s-90s and contemporary and changing them into tsome twee hipster shit and I used to be really fuckign into this.

at the time in 2015 there was a small obsession with poking fun at pop music. Parody music was huge with the likes of Bart Baker and Key of Awesome regular spoofing popular music videos at the time and there was a lot of flop eras happening. Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainer, Maroon 5. There was a lot to work with. Maybe this was just me as an asshole teen but pop music kinda felt like shit so reinterpretations of popular pop songs hit the mark in one way or another.

The selection of the songs for this album, (which mind you was one of four that PMJ produced this year), is pretty solid. You have Hailey Reinhart giving us some of her most iconic performances from PMJ. We have some really incredible torch song covers as well as a personal favorite of Radioactive sung by Blake Lewis who I was definetly gay for in high school. He does a beat-boxing solo in the middle and it definetly shouldn't work but it absolutely does.

I was original going to give this album flaq for its opener. Bad Blood sung by the lovely Aubrey Logan but on further inspection it gets a pass.

Bad Blood is an increidble bold choice to open an album on. Its one of the poorest in Taylor Swifts catologue and was aggresively panned if memory served. Bad Blood is a meme song about how Taylor Swift got beef with Katy Perry. Its very much is not a well-loved pop song in the veins of Radioactive or Habits (Stay High).

Taylor Swift is also just not an artist whose style lends itself to a jazz style and yet this song manages to pull it off. Theres some very clever rhytym to it and Logan manages to rattle off the lyrics at a breakneck speed that sounds much more like scatting then it does rap which is insane. Thats just good arrangement right there and it makes the song much more captivating then I find the original to be. So good on it.

Its hard to rate this album highly. One its a cover album but also praising an album like this for me makes me feel like I'm acting like some kind of snob who needs pop music to be 'fixed' for a more refined and classy palate. But also I just really love a good jazz number and there is a famarity already with these songs. It is simpy put accesable.

Did Max use problamatic language ? Yes he did, the whole thing with the M slur he said to Lance is an example and while it was blown out of proportion I think he should have apologized. But it bothers me why people think he is the only one who said problamatic stuff in the past. Lewis has said something transphobic before, Lando and Seb have made sexist comments before, Daniel has also said incredibly prviledged stuff. At the end of the day these are all priviledged rich people and nobody in this sport is perfect. You dont have to like these people and if you dislike a driver thats totally fine. But let his fans enjoy the sport, this fandom would be so much better if people would just focus on the drivers they like instead of the drivers they hate ( which is something that goes for both sides of the fandom). Like you can praise Lewis and critize the FIA without dragging Max into this and you can praise Max without talking down on Lewis. Why cant people learn this 💀

I wanna talk about ROTTMNT Splinter for a second

At the start of the series hell even by mid season I did not think I’d be saying this but

I think Rise’s Splinter is my favorite iteration of the character

So I got a couple reasons for this due to the unique take Rise has gone with him.

First of all his backstory is kinda less offensive? Ok hear me out so in the early comics (and I think still in the comics im not sure) Splinter was the pet rat of a man named Yamato Yoshi who was turned humanish by the mutatgen so it kinda made sense he had this flawed understanding of ninjas and japan that is deeply rooted in sterotypes. But in most modern incarnations making him Yamato Yoshi mutated into a ratman we kinda get this very ....old school look at ninjas and japan in general even in the 2k12 series. Theres just this hidden ninja clan for little to no reason obsessed with tradition and honor and if you think on it for a bit it gets a little mmmmmmm i dont want to say problamatic but its definitely eyebrow raising.

This version of his backstory kind of fixes those issues. He’s from an ancient clan that seems to have died out recently BUT theres also a reason they have stayed as long as they did they had something to protect the world from that they wouldnt want getting out and causing panic. Until Splinter decided to say “The foot hasnt done anything in centuries and they wont” and became a B movie action star/underground fighting champ. And even this kind of helps this issue as well. Its definetly a throwback to 70s action stars having to use the sterotypes of their race & culture (and for people of asain descent not even their culture) to get a leg up. In a bit of a meta way Slpinters time as Lou Jitsu (which is probably a stage name) kinda pokes fun at these sterotypes media has used for decades. I mean in this context it makes sense why all his techings to the turtles sound like shit he’s making up or dumbing down cause it more than likely is.

Another reason is that despite how he’s the most inhuman looking in desgin this Splinter feels the most human. He’s selfish, makes mistakes, has regrets and from the latest episodes despite how he typically acts he definetly morns the loss of his humanity. This Slpinter had a life before the series a real life, he wasn’t hiding from the shredder and mourning the loss of a wife and child he was living large. He had a career, a passion, friends and loved ones and he had it all taken away in an instant. We still dont know if he had agreed to Draxums experiments or was forcefully taken but we do know that he made a choice to do right by the his boys. We know he could have gone to Big Mama but then Draxum could have found them so he went into hiding, raised the turtles best he could, tried to keep them safe and tried to find the best in this new life of his. Like I dont think its a lie that Splinter loves that he can be a lazy slob and who does nothing for hours (I think after the life he lived being ale to just let himself go was a kind of paradise) but i do think the thought of what he might have been does keep him up at night and that is never a feeling I get from other Splinters.

Last is his relationship with the boys. Now you might think that becuase he doesn’t seriously start training them until the later parts of S1 and that he’s kind of ignores them he’d be a worse parent than past Splinters but I feel thats a wrong line of thinking. See I’ve pointed out before that this Splinter feels like a Dad First and Sensei Second where as past Splinters were the opposite and that makes all the difference. Past Splinters were constantly training the boys for a day that may never come you very rarely saw him relaxing with them and there was always this air seperation from the wise sensei and his pupils all while structuring their lives around training.

But for the 2018 version of SPlinter you get the feeling that HIS father was like that, that that was how HE was raised and he knows just how kinda awful it is. You could say his decision to become Lou Jitsu action star and Yokai tournament fighter was his way of rebeling against his family who raised him more like a duty than a family. That he gave his boys their freedom to do as they liked out of desire of how HE wanted to be raised. I mean look he joins in on their pranks, he’s the referee of their annual sports competition, aside from taking his things and not being seen he doesnt seem to have any real rules or expectations of them. He wants them to enjoy their lives as much as they can even though its limited. He also expresses his love for them openly and frequently as the series goes on and the fact that he had them watch his old movies and that they loved them likely meant the world to him.

Is he forgetful? Yes. Is he flawed? Ohhhhh Yes. Can he be a little insensitive? Yep.

But you never get the feeling he prefers one turtle over the others, that he doesnt love them, that he doesnt want to give them a happy life thats their own and to me that makes all the difference.

^-^ sure thing! quick reminder that I’m not genderfluid (still kinda questioning but I’m currently identifying as a demi-girl), so if I say something Problamatic please call me on it!

-As I see it; Naruto switches between ‘he/him’ and ‘she/her’ pronouns fairly often, and it is not a subtle change so it’s usually pretty easy to follow; it only gets tricky when Naruto uses ‘they/them’ pronouns for a day or two, less because he identifes with ‘they/them’ and more because it sometimes takes him a bit to figure out what pronouns to go by. Sakura is usually she/her and is fairly often they/them, only occasionally feeling more ‘he/him’, but didn’t know that ‘they/them’ was an...option, for a while, and is only really overtly feminine when she’s ‘she/her’, so people (including her sometimes) think they’re ‘he/him’ when they aren’t. Sasuke is a mess, because he never feels right in his own skin for reasons besides dysphoria, and it takes him the longest by far to realize he’s genderfluid. He’s never really been ‘she/her’, and spends most of his time switching between a handful of nonbinary-pronouns- they/them/, xe/xir- and sometimes he/him, but doesn’t know that nonbinary identities....exist, much less the names of them, and has a lot of baggage attached to being the ‘last son of the Uchiha’ and ‘Itachi’s little brother’, so basically he’s got a lot of issues to address before he can even realized much less acknowledge his genderfluidity. -Naruto’s the only one completely comfortable with his identity. Everyone hated her anyway, so it’s not like anyone cared to ‘correct him’ for wearing ‘girls’ clothing or buying make up or anything. Like most things for her as a child, its just something she liked doing so she did with no more thought put into it.

-(Pronouns were both an issue and a non-issue; while he has fluid pronoun preferences, he rarely expresses or acknowledges them. After-all, whatever discomfort he gets from being misgendered, it’s hard to notice in the relief of being gendered at all, instead of just being an ‘it’.)

-Naruto’s team knows about him- or her, as it is sometimes, though ‘she/her’ pronouns aren’t something any of them consider trying for a few months. Sakura does her makeup when she asks them to, and Sasuke occasionally points out things that are her ‘style’, and eventually Naruto asks Kakashi to help her with sustaining her ‘transformation jutsu’ more casually and he agrees.

-Sakura is like....uber repressed. She was raised civilian, brought up to be a perfect little house-wife as soon as she got over her silly shinobi phase. It was odd, growing up; sometimes, she loved playing the part of a perfect daughter, and sometimes it was kind of annoying but not worth fighting, and occasionally it had him sitting on his hands so that he didn’t scratch holes in his skin and biting his lips bloody so he didn’t say something decidedly unladylike.

-Sakura knows about trans people, mostly because of her lowkey-transphobic parents, so he spends a signifigant amount of time thinking he’s a transboy. She waits eagerly to be a shinobi so her parents didn’t legally own her anymore (the state did) and keeps it up for while because she doesn’t know how Kakashi and Sasuke are going to react, one concering as an authority figure and the other concerning as a love prospect.

-She cuts her hair in the chunnin exam though, and it’s devastating to a part of him but so freeing to another, so he kinda just decides ‘go big or go home’ and starts wearing more boyish/baggy clothes and less make up- claiming it’s for practical training reasons.

-It works, for a little while, and Naruto is thankfully the only one who seems to have taken any notice- she doesn’t know how, but out of the three of them he’s the one that it doesn’t matter if he notices. But then, to their horror, Sakrua realizes that she has the same problem in boys clothes; he likes it sometimes, and doesn’t really care other times, and hates it with enough passion to set herself on fire on occasion.

-She doesn’t know what that means, but she does know that if she doesn’t put on something cuter soon she’s going to push Sasuke into a river. Naruto catches her eye, and he gives her a weird look, but while they’re setting up tents he gives her a change of clothes he brought in case he’d want to wear them. They’re fucking ugly, colors terribly bright, but her hair is already fucking pink and she’s desprate in a weird way so she just thanks him and changes, and Sasuke and Kakashi give her weird looks but don’t say anything.

-Along with all of xir aforementioned issues, Sasuke has a weird relationship with makeup. Xe hates it on Xemself- hates things on xir face in general- but xe likes doing makeup, like artistically, so xe’ll do Sakura and Naruto’s fairly often.

-I want to say more about xem cause I said basically nothing but this got long and I have to go do something so I guess thats that on that

seeing the diversity in holland's mv makes me so emotional and i really hope he gets all the love and support cause he actually deserves it like he could've been a problamatic dick who doesn't care for wlw but he put black women, drag queens, wlw, biracial couples and problably people of diffrent sexualities like that makes me so happy and even just the song is so inspiring like we usually get sad songs (not saying thats bad) but he's just out here living his best life and being so brave truly WE STAN

It was quiet, save for the music that played over the radio. A Frank Sinatra melody that you hum along to, swaying back and forth, tapping a beat on your notebook. Your glasses slip down your nose, scrunching your nose to fix them.

Books are spread out, a hasty attempt to review before the exam tomorrow morning.

“You’ll be okay,” he speaks up, smiling to himself when you look up over your glasses and squint ever-so-slightly, “these chapters have been a breeze for you.”

You sigh, “I know...but I just want to do well on this. I can’t have any room for a bad grade, it could bring my GPA down and I need to maintain it.”

The words of comfort he wants to say would only be false, doing little to appease you. He did the next best thing.

“I’ll test over the questions, okay? Then we’re taking a break.”

“Perfect,” you smile at him, handing over the flash cards.

2:20am

It was near-silent in the house, only the hum of the refrigerator and a dog barking down the street. The fluorescent lights from the stove wash over your face, lighting it up as you sit crossed-leg on the floor. While it would have been more romantic to be outside, it was also winter. Even then, he felt a chill through his pants.

The ice cream held in his hands wasn’t helping. Chocolate swirled on his tongue as he sat across from you, leaning against the counter.

“Pony, I have literally never been so in love with you than I have in this very moment.”

Despite how hushed the words were spoken, he hears them perfectly, and can feel the blush creeping up his neck.

“Like, if you had texted me at two am and said ‘hey baby i am really craving some rocky road right now’, I would have left you on read and gone back to sleep.”

Your voice had raised, laughter curling into your tone, and he shushes you over his own laugh.

“I must love you a lot.”

7:26am

He always wakes up early, from the moment the sun creeps over the horizon, he seems to be awake. It had always annoyed him, especially when Sodapop would continue to snore by his ear.

Mornings when he woke up next to you weren’t so bad.

Seeing your face smush against the pillow, mouth open in a silent snore, was enough to make him smile.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he whispers upon seeing your eyes flutter open.

You squint at him, curling up under the blanket. “It’s too early...”

He doesn’t argue with that, opening his arms for you. The smell of your shampoo fills his nose and he can’t help but take note of how content he is in that moment.

3:30pm

Your face is pinched with anger, hands curled at your side. There had been a time when he had thought you looked beautiful like that - a storm brewing. The sight only ignited his annoyance like dry brush.

“I didn’t know you felt that way,” your face falls slightly, but hardens at his attempts to come closer.

“You wouldn’t, would you.”

“And, what’s that supposed to mean?”

“You never listen to anything I say.”

“I don’t listen?” The incredulity wrenches from you, “that is just rich coming from you! At least I care, you can’t say the same.”

“You care?”

“More than I should,” you deflat at those words, letting out a small huff. You turn away, casting him a look of annoyance that is tinged with sadness.

8:09pm

It’s a dumb, high school party, and for some reason he’s there.

Songs full of explicit lyrics are amplified through the bumping bass, almost shaking the walls.

Alcohol that makes his throat burn is passed around freely, stinging in a way that almost pushes him to go home. If the flashing neon lights weren’t the cause of the headache forming at the base of his skull, then it was definitely whatever the hell was in the red solo cup.

His senses were being assaulted, digging under his skin like a needle. He almost left, thinking about how he would be with you, then he thinks of the argument.

It’s still on his mind, filled with anger at the petty spat, when he spots her among the crowded room.

9:43am

Hope it was worth it.

His eyes peer at the single text from you, the gears in his brain turning slowly, as he tries to move without worsening his searing headache.

Was what?

He types back, thinking back to the night beforehand and having a strange gap in memory. The “...” pops up in his screen, and then stops, before re-typing. He waits for a response that never comes.

12:30pm

Two-Bit comes over, teeth chewing at his bottom lip.

“You look better than I expected,” he says, “you were trashed last night. Barely got you home in one piece.”

“I barely remember anything...”

The wince that Two-Bit does is subtle, but he notices.

“Did something happen?”

“Christ, kid, you really don’t remember?”

He thinks back to the text you sent him, a sense of foreboding flooding him. “What happened, Two-Bit?”

“Jesus...you made out with Cathy.”

“My ex Cathy?”

“You know any other Cathy’s?”

Shit.

3:01pm

13 Missed Calls: Ponyboy

10:33pm

His face said it all, the words he refused to say, hands clenched as he looked away. Avoided looking at the tears gathered in your eyes.

“Look, I’m sorry...”

Despite it all, it was the apology, soaked with sympathy, that made the tears fall. His eyes glimmered, like he might cry, and it made you angry. It was like he threw your heart into a fire, then decided to splash water on the flames.

“Don’t.” The word is wrenched out, laden with the despair that is beginning to grip your heart.

His throat bobs as he tries to get closer, “really, I didn’t mean to...it - just, I thought, when you left...”

It’s a mess. His words are a mess. Your heart is a mess.

You regret the day you ever fell in love with Ponyboy Curtis.

4:37pm

Sunsets don’t look the same, he decides, one night.

When he had seen the beauty behind each one, they seemed dull now.

Everything was gray around the edges, like looking through a filtered photo. Nothing made sense. Not since he broke up with you.

It was his own fault, but it didn’t hurt any less.

Knowing that it was him - his actions, words, feelings - that pushed you away hurt him than anything.

Nothing felt gold anymore.

Who is the local conspiracy theorist in Heatherhive? And of what? And who is the local cryptid and the unknown crpytid thats actually supernatural?

This has been sitting in my inbox for weeks because I meant to respond with drawings but I am just going to finally Answer It because thats not happening

Albireo is the closest thing to a conspiracy theorist in town. He fosters a belief of the occult and supernatural, and often wonders about individuals he sees or interacts with. Where they came from, what they might Actually be, etc. Definitely wants a friend to go ghost-finding with. Keeps his Thoughts to himself for the most part, but he has a Lot of thoughts.

The closest thing to a local "cryptid" is probably Ame- They don't go out into town much, as they're often busy with work or being nocturnal, and when they do go out their appearance can occasionally cause a stir. Not so much an actual cryptid per se, but they definitely turn some heads.

As for actual, suspiciously nondragon or supernatural beings, there is a resident Selkie and a Werewolf low-key residing in Heatherhive. Iris knows about both of their situations (moreso about the selkie, given that hes a guard and it'd usually be problamatic when a guard spontaneously disappears towards the sea for weeks at a time. He is exempt from any repurcussion because of her- other guards have no idea why), but most of the townsfolk remain unaware. Iris is also aware of the werewolf's existence and she knows who it is, but hasn't really ever asked them about it since it's never been a problem or any of her business. Nea knows who it is too.

Finding the First Gay Kiss - Diary of a Big Ole Gay: 12/9/22

Hey whores sorry its been a minute I've been feeling enniu and spending money to fill my holes.

(this popped up when I typed in "any hole is a goal" so take from that what you will.)

I have also been watching gay shit so lets see where we left off.

fuck its vingarne???? thats like so fucking long ago. ok well buckle in whores I'm gonna write as much as I can in the next half hour and then I have to get ready for a twitch stream where I you guessed it, watch more gay films, (twitch is just my username btw).

Coney Island (1917) dir by Roscoe Fatty Arbunkle

So this is one of the more transphobic films so far and honestly not the vibe. If you are like me and you keep looking up pictures of Fatty Arbunkle in drag for "research" then you will have seen him in a bathing outfit. In fact I saw a clip of this in disclosure and nobody chose to credit fatty arbunkle in this so I could watch.

The actually plot is beyond annoying we have the classic henpecked husband trope, (tbh I find the trope intresting just because its such a different marital dynamic then I'm used to seeing in film), who goes to coney island. Buster Keatons girlfriend just fucking leaves him cause he can't pay for tickets so he sneaks into the fair to do shaninagans. who the fuck cares its buster Keaton I would watch that man do anything.

at some point Fatty wants to go swimming but the clerk is fatphobic to him so the obvious answer to this problem is of course crossdressing. I still absolutely love how this is the solution for everything in these films its refreshing after growing up in the 2000s

also buster keaton does a backflip.

The actually cross dressing elements become quickly problamatic. Its like if fatty arbunkle did so wack cocaine and one of his orgys and dream walked into the mind of a 21st century terf before he wrote the script. its a lot of sexual predators, (fatty), invading women's spaces and men being "tricked" by fattys drag persona. and don't get me wrong its not like there isn't other gender shaninagans in these role reversal films but this one is just recognizable transphobic. Like it plays off tropes and narratives I recognize from modern discourse just in the same way that behind the screen was a recognizable "fairy" trope.

I Don't Want To Be a Man (1918) dir Ernst Lubistch

so this film sucks in the sense that I hate the characters and its super sexist but you do have this character in boy mode absolutely making out with a guy heres a quote from my LB review.

Its at this point we get to the stage of HOW GAY WAS IT! because essentialy what happens is that Occi gets drunk AF and starts making out with a dude.

Now I feel that even though objectively this was some straight shit since she identifies as a women its still siturationally queer, I've been watching a lot of these "Role-Reversal" comedies back to back and there really isn't a concept of passing in these films even in siturations in which a character is very clearly cross dressing, (Mabel's Blunder and the Porter from The ABC of Love) come to mind the characters are unable to distinguish them from there presentation. I also don't think that this suspension of disbelief is set specifically to this era either. Even modern films like ugh... Shes The Man present these cross-dressing as serving masc with the suspicion presented being about performance not presentation.

Side Note: A lot of these types of films absolutely reek with transphobic and homophobic "comedy"

So in the scope of the narrative and genre, I have to assume that Occi presents fully as male in these scenes and that the other characters are interacting with her in boymode. Which to me means that when the guy kisses her, thats gay. Its gay because he was had the absolute attention of kissing a man at the time dispite him not having all the available information.

Also he was like totally surprised when he found out she was a women so like honestly we stan this bisexual disaster right here.

like sure I don't love this film but like her DADDY being bisexual is kinda hawt.

Side note: I'm using the term daddy to refur to this love interest character who is present as moralizing and domineering. Its usually paired with a "wild child" who needs to be taught to settle down and you know be a "respectable women" think Angel and the Bad Man, theres this fucked up conflation of a male love interest as being both sexual desirable and paternal its very fruedian.

(I couldn't find that scene where Clint Eastwood beats his wife and its presented as totally chill so heres the only picture under "spanking" that isn't literal porn)

Yankee Doodle in Berlin (1919) dir F. Richard Jones

So yeah this is just a comedy where a guy dresses in drag. Bothwell Browne was a female impersanator from europe and while I don't believe he had very many film gigs he was of a similar celebrity as Julien Eltinge. Eltinge himself starred in a similar propaganda flick whose name escapes me.

These films were playing off of the public interest of vauldeville and female impersanation so its a lot more family friendly drag show then any thing queer and subversive.

Interesting history note but not great otherwise.

Ander die Als Anderan {Different from the others} (1919) dir. Richard Oswald

ok so I have exactly one minute to finish this blog so I'm just gonna paste the whole ass history of this film from my working script on the subject.

Ok so I was really excited to get to this film but first I need to talk about post world war 1 Germany, yaasssss bitch, its the part of every video that I just accidentally bring up the rise of Fascism, woopsie. But First Homophobia.

This film is heavily concerned with the appeal of section 175 which those who know there gay history immediately recognize. Section or paragraph 175 was a german law that and I’m simplifying here, criminalizes Homosexual Activity. It was based off of medieval anti-sodomy laws and during different parts of Germanys history it has existed in more lenient and draconic measures.

This measure was protested by a variety of people notable the Scientific Humanitarian Committee which was founded in 1897 and the World League for Sexual Reform in 1921 both founded by one Magnus Hirshfield. Hirshfield was a sexologist and while he wasn’t the only person or first person involved in this fight he was very influential. Now once again simplifying but a pet theory that was going around europe at the time was this idea of degeneration. Bitch do I need to explain eugenics to you. Basically Mendel was like hey vetch genetics exist and then fifty years later people were like actually the queers are a social contagion. They were considered degenerate, you know weak stock, like a runt dog or a horse with club foot, the merciful thing would be to take it out behind the woodshed.

So Hirshfield with his queens and eggheads were like um actually Reich und Lander being homosexual isn’t literally a suicide gene meant to destory civilization its actually just a natural variation of humanity. Hirschfield referred to it as being a sexual intermediary or Third Sex, this notion of being between the dicometric poles in nature, Your’ve may have heard the phrase Sexual Invert as well all from the same well you get it.

In 1919 Hirshfield founded the Institite fur sexualwissenkraft, which was a non-profit dedicated to researching queer identity and also provided education and medical resources, for instance being involved with the transition of Danish Painter Lili Elbe. During the same year an austrian director by the name of Richard Osward teamed up with hirshfield to make a Aufklärungsfilm, or sexual enlightment film. Basically an education film about a taboo subject like drugs or the gays.

The film was supposedly very successful but in 1920, the republic established a censorship board and Different from the Others was reduced to only being able to be shown to clergy and doctors for educational purposes. There was however a shortened version included in another documentary called Laws of Love in 1927 that just so happened to make its way to Ukraine. Keep a pin in that.

Unfortunately as we all know in 1933 The Nazis official took power and in may of the same year The German Student Union called “Action against the Un-German Spirit” which called for the destruction of any work that went against nazis ideals, Hirshfield being a Jewish Kinkster was obvioiusly on the list, The German Student Union broke into the Institute fur Sexualwissenkraft and tore down the thousands of books, films and other documents and burned them including of course the full version of Anders als die Anderen. Like that in one day in may, one of the largest resources of queer knowledge was destroyed.

As Tragic as it is luckily the frost didn’t get to all the potatoes. Remember that copy of Laws of Love well luckily historians managed to get ahold of it so the world at least has a glimpse of hirshfields original intention.

Well now that I spent a good what 15 minutes telling you about the cultural baggage this film has I guess I should probably talk about whether or not the gay kiss happens.

Well yes and know most of the film is concerned about how kinda fucked up how Section 175 is and while the movies straight up is like Hello I’m a homosexual can I have some rights please. Its actually pretty light on the pda. Its definitely queer Hirshfield wanted to “Usualize” Queer experience so we have people cruising in a ballroom and so forth but the closest we get to a gay kiss is through implication, where we have to young school boys lean in and then a fade to black. Like we definitely know what was going on but we don’t get to see it.

anyway whores stay tuned for more update articles because this is the one way we are keeping the now 120 films straight in my mind. Also if I watch any queer short films that arn't on the list then I'll add them to it I decided.
