i'm gonna make a list of all the characters i want because i can:
5-stars:
pyro - yoimiya
geo - zhongli, albedo
anemo - venti, kazuha
cryo - ayaka, shenhe
hydro - kokomi
4-stars:
pyro - yanfei
geo - yun jin, ningguang
I also wouldn't mind getting these characters:
diluc, tighnari, heizou, qiqi (yeah i know i know lol but i honestly wouldn't mind using her), ganyu, nilou, childe, mona, fischl, beidou
I honestly don't like and/or care about these characters, but begrudgingly admit that they would be a benefit to my account:
nahida, scaramouche, raiden shogun
#⇢₊˚⊹ 🩷∥ruby∥yo,ide yo !!#this is sorted purely by personal preference btw#also for context#I haven't finished the inazuma archon quest yet#maybe my opinion on nahida will change#I don't not like her or anything. I just don't care either#I definitely don't like raiden. and at the point where I am in the story#it feels like I'm not gonna like her even after whatever they're gonna do to make her previous actions okay#also scaramouche#I don't like asshole characters. no matter how tragic their backstory is#and that scene in the delusion factory just made me dislike him even more#I'm also the type of player who couldn't give two shits about the meta#case in point: I main chongyun#but if I just so happen to get either of the three#at least I might have a chance at clearing spiral abyss for the primos#and get more funds for characters I actually like#honestly though#even though nahida is objectively better at applying dendro#even if I had her,I'd still use collei everywhere besides the abyss#I'm glad the game gave me cyno at the last minute tbh#now that I'm more familiar with the other characters#he's the electro character I like the most#also rip to me who wants both ayaka and shenhe#now that i have sucrose idek if i should continue pulling on the banner#i'm gonna try for shenhe to buff my chongyun (and to reunite the family too ig lol)#even though i like ayaka more and she's a carry,i feel like she's way more likely to get a rerun than shenhe#i also have no intention of ever benching chongyun so yeah lmao#chongyun and me? we ride or die#i think i'm gonna stop pulling after this banner ends either way though#if i don't get venti in his next rerun i'm gonna scream

People like to say that you’re a weird kid. You much prefer the term unique. After all, it isn’t everyday that someone makes it their life’s mission to marry their Archon.
Besides, you’ve met plenty of other people you can confidently call weirder than you. Case number one: Hu Tao, aka the Funeral Director’s granddaughter, aka your best friend. Case number two: Chongyun, your local popsicle dealer. Case number three: Xiangling, the trauma-inducer who proved to you that not everything is, in fact, edible and you should most definitely be wary the next time she offers you any food.
And case number four: Xingqiu.
You don’t think that last one needs any sort of explanation. Anyone who’s as filthy rich as him and chooses to spend their time with commoners like you instead of basking in their mora is weird (in hindsight, it wasn’t a very logical reason, but it very much made sense in your ten-year-old brain). That, and he’s a huge nerd, though that can be forgiven since he’s your main source of information regarding your future husband, Rex Lapis.
Which brings you to the conclusion that yes, maybe there’s a little bit of truth in it whenever someone calls you weird, but surrounding yourself with even weirder people cancels the weirdness out in some complex mathematical way. So while they may be, possibly, likely telling the truth, they’re also technically lying.
So, no, you’re not weird. End of story.
“Let me get this straight, you’re trying to hire me in advance as the musician for your future wedding with Rex Lapis?”
You nod, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Of course! Who else would I hire besides the best musician I know?”
“I’m the only musician you know,” Xinyan points out with amusement.
“Details! Once your parents finally get off your back about music, I just know you’re gonna be amazing!” You offer her a high five. “So are you in?”
She stares at your hand for a moment, an unreadable look crossing her face before it smooths out into a wide grin. Her palm slaps over yours in a high five.
“Well, duh! What kind of person would I be to reject a once in a lifetime’s offer of performing in a god’s wedding?” She laughs, slinging her arm over your shoulder. You smile at her easy acceptance, of not calling you weird like the other kids.
Hm. Another one recruited into your band of supporters, aka the only people who actually believe you when you say you’re going to marry Rex Lapis. Excellent.
“Is this really necessary?”
“Of course it is! What kind of future wife would I be if I didn’t at least clean up my future husband’s statues?” you respond, not once pausing in your motions of scrubbing the base of the statue.
Chongyun sighs but makes no move to stop as he sweeps up dead leaves. “You know, if you channeled half as much energy as you did into your studies, you wouldn’t have to constantly beg Xingqiu to tutor you.”
“We’re eleven—wait, actually, I’m eleven, you’re still an eeny bitty kid who’s ten—but back to my point, in a few years’ time my grades won’t matter. Have you ever heard Granny Ruoxin bragging about how she got high scores when she was in school? No. Which is why I don’t have to bother putting in the effort as long as I’m passing.”
“You’re barely passing,” Hu Tao cackles from her seat in the shade away from the sun’s merciless rays, having gotten the easiest task of being the provider of food and cleaning supplies.
You frown. “Well, school’s not really important anyway.”
“Yes it is,” Chongyun argues, ever the voice of reason.
You despair at the lack of Xiangling’s presence. She’d have taken your side. Hell, even Xingqiu and Xinyan would’ve agreed with you. It’s not like grades mattered to a rich kid and a future musician.
Hu Tao suddenly sits up, a look on her face that tells you you’re not gonna like what she’s about to say. “Hey, didn’t the elders finally allow you to attend the Rite of Descension next month?”
Finally, you pause from cleaning the statue. “Yeah, they did.”
Her smile turns positively mischievous. “Doesn’t Rex Lapis give out words of wisdom each year? How about you ask him what he thinks about the importance of school?”
Your jaw drops. “No way! Like I’d ever ask him such a useless question.”
“Oh really? Are you sure it’s not because you’re scared he’ll disagree with you?” she says, egging you on.
Unable to come up with a suitable argument, you concede. “Oh, fine! I’ll ask him that, but you better prepare your apology speech for when I’m proven right.”
Here is how your first meeting with Rex Lapis goes: an incredibly nervous you, the very large, very dragon-y him, and an entire audience’s worth of people at your back, watching your interaction and waiting for their turn to be given wisdom by the Lord of Geo.
It barely lasts a minute. The good thing, however, is that you managed to ask him if he thought school was important with only minimal stuttering, and that he answered.
The bad thing is that Hu Tao does not, in fact, owe you an apology speech.
Within the next two months, your grades skyrocket. Your teachers are all very impressed with your improvement and asked what brought this change on.
“Love, Miss Shu Xian, love has changed me,” you tell your teacher before walking away, feeling like a character from one of Xingqiu’s novels.
“What a strange kid…” your teacher mutters as she watches you place your hand on the balcony’s railings and pretend to look wisely over the surroundings—the surroundings being the large, stained wall of the neighboring restaurant of your school.
“You’ll really do that for me?” you ask, tears forming at the corner of your eyes.
Yun Jin laughs, sounding like an angel sent from above and handing you a handkerchief to dab at your eyes with. “Of course! What are friends for? I promise to sing only the very best songs and dance the liveliest dances of all.”
You blow your nose loudly into the handkerchief. “Don’t pressure yourself! I don’t need it to be the best, even your presence alone would be enough.”
“Ah, but it’s your future wedding, a once in a lifetime event, that would be no time to slack,” she argues, still managing to look graceful even after you’ve ruined her well-embroidered handkerchief with tears and snot. She places her hand on your shoulder. “Now, what has happened? You’re not normally so easily reduced to tears.”
You sniffle. “The usual.” When she purses her lips like a disapproving mother, you’re forced to elaborate. “Just some girls thinking they could pick on the weird kid who wants to marry our Archon. Nothing new.”
Her eyes soften. “I’m sorry.”
You wave her off, forcing out a laugh. “That was no issue. You should’ve seen the look on their faces when I threw a bucket of dirty water at them.” You were in the middle of cleaning another statue, not your fault the nearest thing was the bucket. They should be glad you didn’t hit them with your broom. They should be even gladder Hu Tao wasn’t there to retaliate against them.
“That was a mean thing to do,” Yun Jin says, but the amused smile on her lips tells you otherwise.
You cross your arms. “They deserved it.”
She hums. “They did.”
For your fourteenth birthday, you decide to spend it hunting for geoculus in order to gift them to the love of your life’s statues. Not a very fun activity, especially since it’s your birthday and the gift-giving should be the other way around, but you console yourself with the thought that you’ll have him gift you a pool full of mora in your wedding.
Besides, it’s not like you can throw a party. It’d be very disrespectful to Hu Tao’s grandfather who just passed away, and with your best friend off on a search to find Director Hu’s soul… well, your birthday now consists of you, a bunch of qingxin flowers you picked up on the way, and the three geoculus you managed to find.
Currently, you’re trying to find a way to reach the fourth geoculus without slipping down the mountainside, breaking all your bones, and consequently dying in the process. Why do these things only appear in dangerous and high places? Oh, and now it’s raining. Just your luck.
Life would be so much easier with a vision. Geo, to be exact. No other element would suffice. You might just die if you married the Geo Archon and had, say, a pyro vision instead of a geo vision. Especially since a geo vision would be exceptionally helpful in your predicament right now.
Still, you’ve come all the way up the mountain, a little probability of death won’t stop you. Well, it probably should, but you’re already taking a leap and reaching for the vine that’ll hopefully swing you into the geoculus’s way and into the other side of the narrow gorge. No going back now, not that you ever planned on doing so.
You cling to the vine with all your might while your other hand reaches for the geoculus.
It brushes the tips of your fingers—
The vine snaps.
You wake up to the feeling of your head pounding, scrapes and bruises all over your body. No broken bones though. Thank Rex Lapis.
In your right hand is the geoculus you’d been reaching for. Huh. So falling down to your almost-death wasn’t a waste after all.
Something warm pulses in your left hand. Curious, you unclench your fingers.
Your world falls apart. Tears fall down your eyes in rivulets, sobbing as you curse Celestia and all the gods—except for Rex Lapis, of course—about how awful their sense of humor is. You look down at the accursed object in your hand with betrayal.
A pyro vision.
Hu Tao returns from her self-appointed mission from the afterlife, takes one look at you, your dejected expression, and the pyro vision now hanging in shame by your hip, and she immediately understands.
She points to her own newly obtained pyro vision. “Hey, at least we match!”
“Oh Rex Lapis, please accept this humble offering and exchange it for something more suitable… like, say, a geo vision?”
Nothing.
You continue kneeling in front of the statue with your pyro vision in hand, posing like a man about to offer his firstborn son to the gods in sacrifice.
A few seconds pass. Then a minute, then two, three. Five minutes pass.
You’ve been kneeling for ten whole minutes. Nothing has changed, your vision still glows red. Not even a sign to indicate that he heard your pleas, something like a pebble landing in your head. But alas, there is none.
You hear a snicker carried by the wind from your right. Snapping your head to the source of the sound, you find Xingqiu leaning against the trunk of a tree, a book in hand as he watches your ridiculous display. Sighing hopelessly, you stand up from your position and make your way towards him, storing your vision safely in your pocket ‘cause hey, a vision’s a vision, no matter how displeased you are with its element.
He opens his mouth, probably a greeting, but most likely a quip you’re currently not in the mood to be dealing with, so you speak before he has any chance to.
“Yes, I know, I looked ridiculous.”
He raises his eyebrows at your words. “That was not what I was about to say.”
You lean against the same tree, pushing all your weight into your shoulder. “Then what were you about to say?”
Xingqiu looks away. You follow his gaze and find him staring at the statue of the Geo Archon you’d just been kneeling to moments ago.
“You needn’t be so upset with your vision—”
You laugh. “Because a vision’s still a vision, a sign of recognition from the gods? Yeah, I know. Heard that many times already.”
A crease forms between his brows. “Again, you’ve assumed what I was about to say.” Then he sighs, his expression smoothening out. “No, what I meant to say is that geo or pyro, vision or no vision, it did not change your goal at all, did it?”
“I guess not,” you mutter.
“Then you need not worry, friend. Rex Lapis’s future affections for you won’t be changed by a mere vision.”
You nod, slowly getting invigorated. “Yeah, you’re right.” Then, you turn a cheeky smile to Xingqiu. “You know, for someone who’s younger than me, you sure are wise.”
“Only a year younger, which is barely much of a difference when compared to—”
“Okay, that’s enough! Just remembered that I need to go to the market today and buy some tea for the elders,” you say, pushing yourself up and rummaging your pockets for mora.
“Oh, let me help. It’s been a while since I last spoke to Pops Kai.”
Finding only a couple of mora, barely enough to buy a piece of bread, you agree. “Fine, but you’re paying, rich boy.”
Alright, you’ll admit that maybe you were overreacting a little bit after you found out your vision was pyro instead of geo, but you’d like to blame that one on the raging concussion you probably had after taking a tumble down that deep gorge.
Anything else that happened after your concussion faded away is a result of deliriousness from eating too much of Xiangling’s strange dishes.
On Hu Tao’s sixteenth birthday, the two of you sneak in a few quick sips of alcohol. Unfortunately for you, this leads to the discovery that you are extremely lightweight. Another unfortunate thing for you is that her birthday coincided with the Rite of Descension that year. The same Rite of Descension that you’ve been religiously attending each year ever since you were allowed to.
A little tipsiness won’t stop you from going to the Rite of Descension, or as you liked to call it, the yearly wooing of your future husband.
Hu Tao accompanies you to the Pavilion where it’s held. You wave enthusiastically to Keqing, who you’ve come to know during all those years. She waves back briefly, but then returns to doing all her busy Yuheng stuff.
You stop near the railing, facing Hu Tao with a serious, if slightly dazed, look. Placing both hands on her shoulders, you lean close. “This is the day I propose. Just watch.”
Her face takes on a gleeful turn. Clapping her hands, she gestures for you to line up on the queue of people awaiting their yearly dose of wisdom from the Lord of Geo. “I wish you all the best. Onwards, oh brave soldier of the heart!”
Significantly encouraged by her words, your slightly tipsy self made your way to the line, waiting patiently for your turn. When you finally reach the front, you pull out the large cor lapis you got lucky enough to win on the market the other day, and with a slightly intoxicated grin, you walk your way to the front.
Cor lapis in hand, you raise it in an offering motion and say quietly, because no one else needs to hear what you’re about to proclaim except you and the Geo Archon, “Rex Lapis, will you marry me?”
Unfortunately, due to the previously mentioned inebriated state, you didn’t quite manage to control the volume of your voice. Hu Tao’s laugh can be heard amidst the silence that ensues after your proposal.
Molten gold roots you in place. Rex Lapis’s eyes all-knowing and just a tiny bit intimidating when directed to your mortal self in full force. It’s hard to tell what he’s thinking of right now since you’re not exactly an expert at reading dragon expressions, so you stand and wait for a few moments for his reply.
However, due to Hu Tao’s laughter and your ridiculous exclamation, Lady Nigguang seems to think this is some elaborate joke. Really now, the lady should know you better. You remember once telling her your goal of marrying Rex Lapis and how she chuckled at you but never once called you strange for it.
Just before the Millelith can arrive to take you away and probably arrest you, Rex Lapis lets out a loud, hearty laugh.
It’s enough to startle everyone within hearing vicinity, including yourself.
“Hah… It has been many years since I felt such keen amusement,” his voice rumbles, carrying on over the crowd and forcing everyone to listen. “For that alone, child, I shall grant you this: return in a few years bearing that same question, and perhaps I shall answer differently.”
To anyone listening, it was obvious that this was just his way of rejecting your proposal and that he would not, in fact, change his mind even in a few years’ time.
To you, though, it meant the world.
Your smile could almost be enough to light up an entire room. “Okay! I’ll hold you to that!”
A woman somewhere behind you gasps at how casually you’re speaking to Rex Lapis, but the rumbling laughter that comes from him says enough. He doesn’t mind.
Cheerily skipping your way out of the sea of onlookers who have their eyes trained on you, you make your way to Hu Tao who’s been watching you with twinkling eyes. She claps your back with a grin, “Whaddya know, a little liquid courage was all it took to get you one step closer to your goal! I’d call this venture of ours a resounding success!”
You wake up the next day with a pounding headache and clear memories of what transpired the day before.
You spend a good few minutes screaming into your pillow.
They’re selling limited edition Rex Lapis figurines at the market today. To avoid the possibility of them getting sold out before you manage to get your hands on one, you’ve decided to camp out right in front of the shop since yesterday.
No one bothers you. After that little debacle at the last Rite of Descension, you’ve become known in Liyue Harbor as the girl who proposed to Rex Lapis. It garnered a few disapproving looks, especially from the old geezers, but unlike your childhood, quite a lot of people now find it funny instead of weird. It’s probably because of how Rex Lapis himself reacted in that situation.
Even the store owner is giving you amused looks as you lay on the cot you’ve set up beside his store since last night. But that was no matter, he was finally opening his shop. Looking around, you find a lot of people standing in the queue right behind you.
You stand up, grinning to yourself as you realized how much of a genius plan this is. You’re first in line.
Figurine in hand and a couple thousand mora broke, you would have missed the identity of the person behind you if you hadn’t recognized their voice. Turning around, you come face to face with none other than, “Keq—”
She quickly shuts you up by placing a hand over your mouth, her other hand holding a Rex Lapis figurine.
Oh Archons.
After dragging you to a less crowded alley, she finally lets you speak. An excited smile forms on your lips. “Keqing! I didn’t know you were a fan!”
“Not so loud!” She shushes you, then she places the figurine in a bag you didn’t notice before, hidden from the world. “And I’m not a fan. I think his views are a little outdated and Liyue could benefit more from a more modernized outlook. But… I do admire his achievements and all he’s done for Liyue.” She sees the knowing look on your face. “That doesn’t make me a fan, okay?”
“Sure, sure. Whatever you say.”
“And even if I was a fan—which I am most certainly not—I’m not like you who would propose to the Geo Archon in front of Liyue’s high profiles.” She places her hand on her hip. “Honestly, I’ve been meaning to ask, but what possessed you to do such an act?”
At the reminder of your mortifying display, a bit of heat creeps to your cheeks. Thankfully, the wear and tear of time has a way of lessening humiliation, especially when said humiliating act is the only thing you’ve been hearing about for the past few months.
“It may have been extremely embarrassing, but I have no regrets! You’ll see, Keqing, one day I’ll invite you to my wedding.”
She sighs at your hopeless delusions. “There’s no arguing with you, is there? Alright, invite me if you will, but I have somewhere to be right now.” You let her go easily. Turning to you one last time, she says, “And don’t tell anyone about this encounter, okay?”
“Gotcha!”
At eighteen, you meet the first person apart from Rex Lapis who’s ever managed to make your heart skip a beat. (For now.)
“Hu Tao, who is that?” you whisper frantically to the newly appointed Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor.
“Hm?” She looks up from the papers in her hand and follows your line of sight. “Oh! That’s Mister Zhongli. He’s our newly hired consultant. Very knowledgable in history and very, and I mean very, rich. It’s like he creates mora out of thin air, that’s how rich he is.”
Tall, handsome, smart, older than you, and rich with earthy tones and amber eyes.
Oh no.
He was exactly your type.
Almost too exact, considering your type is, well, Rex Lapis himself.
Until today, you didn’t even realize you had a type until you found yourself faced with the handsome consultant—Zhongli, his name is Zhongli. For some reason or another, you think you’ve seen him somewhere before, but that idea was quickly shot down. There was just no way you’d ever forget seeing a person like him.
Another problem is that you never even knew you were capable of being attracted to anyone who isn’t Rex Lapis, Morax, the Geo Archon, or all of the above.
Hu Tao seems to have caught on to your internal dilemma.
She raises her arm. “Mister Zhongli, come over here for a sec!”
“What are you doing?!” you hiss at her, slapping her arm repeatedly before straightening once your new object of interest makes his way over. You try your best to inconspicuously rake your eyes over him. If Zhongli notices your attempt at checking him out, he thankfully doesn’t say anything.
“Yes, Director, did you need me for anything?” he says, and good lord, even his voice held that sort of richness to it that made you want to listen to him talk all day.
Hu Tao smiles that same smile you once likened to a shark, all teeth and ready to pounce at any hint of weakness, which in this case is your quickly developing probably-but-hopefully-not-a-crush on her new employee. “Nothing in particular. I just wanted to introduce you here to my friend.”
Her hand lands on the small of your back as she all but shoves you in front Zhongli. You manage not to stumble as you’re pushed forward, internally clenching your fist and thinking of ways to retaliate against your best friend slash the bane of your existence.
You have to crane your neck up just to meet his amused amber eyes, that’s how tall the guy is.
“Ah, I believe you are the Director’s dear friend? She has spoken to me in length about you.”
You find yourself uncharacteristically tongue-tied. “Y-Yeah.” You then manage to introduce yourself with minimum stuttering.
“Well met. My name is Zhongli, the new consultant at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor.” He smiles, looking very regal and wise and infuriatingly handsome and—NO!
You have to stay loyal. Just because a pretty face appeared doesn’t mean you can cheat on your future husband… even if you’re not together yet so technically what you’re doing isn’t actually cheating.
Oh Rex Lapis, please forgive me for this severe case of adultery. I’ll accept any, ahem, punishment you’re willing to give. I promise I’ll bring you the best offering at next year’s Rite of Descension. And maybe you could, you know, finally give me an answer on my proposal—no pressure though!
Zhongli tilts his head ever so slightly like he just heard something funny.
In order to avoid committing anymore acts of cheating, you bid him a hasty goodbye. “It’s been nice meeting you, Mister Zhongli, but I just remembered I have a, uh, statue to clean up! Gotta go!”
You ignore Hu Tao’s knowing look following you as you quickly make your way out of the Funeral Parlor.
“I heard you’ve finally moved on from Rex Lapis,” Xingqiu says in lieu of a greeting.
“I did not! And who told you that?”
He smiles. You’re not fooled by the slightest. That smile is a devil hidden behind the facade of an angel. “Why, our mutual friend Hu Tao did.”
“You know, forcing yourself to clean up every statue of the Geo Archon isn’t going to make the crush you have on Mister Zhongli disappear,” Chongyun points out, watching you work away as you sweep dead leaves into a pile.
“How about you focus on that big fat crush you have on Xingqiu instead?”
He gasps, but your words do their trick in keeping him silent about your not-crush.
Xiangling hands you a surprisingly normal dish when you next see her. “As a gift of celebration for getting your first crush, I made your favorite!”
“I don’t have a crush on Zhongli!”
She smiles. “Hehe, I didn’t say a name.”
You raise your hands in defeat. “Fine. Whatever. Free food is free food.” You take a seat on Wanmin restaurant’s stool and dig into your food.
Guoba pats your knee consolingly.
It takes a good few weeks before you can stand to be in Zhongli’s presence without becoming a heart-palpitating mess. Another few weeks before you can have a proper conversation without thinking about how mesmerizing his eyes are and how nice his biceps look in his snug suit and how much you want to—
Enough!
After the initial awkwardness that is your first meeting, you find that you actually enjoy Zhongli’s company a lot. For one, he’s very knowledgable, has a good eye for scammers which led to your monthly dose of being scammed decreasing significantly. Two, he’s a gentleman. A true gentleman, not like Xingqiu who’d leave you waiting for hours at a meeting spot ‘cause he got too engrossed in reading his books. Zhongli’s the kind who offers you his coat when it’s cold and opens the door for you to enter first.
And lastly, he’s rich.
Hu Tao wasn’t lying at all, the guy is rich enough to be able to haggle the market sellers into selling their wares for a higher price then buy said highly priced wares. You once asked him why he’s working in a Funeral Parlor when it seems like he’s rich enough to have even his great-grandchildren live comfortable and wealthy lives.
His answer?
“I would like to experience working a normal job alongside the people.”
You didn’t have the heart to tell him that if he really wanted to do that, he should’ve chosen a job where he’d constantly be surrounded by living breathing people, not dead ones.
You didn’t realize it then, but at the age of twenty, you meet the person you will one day be cheesily calling the love of your life.
A person is leaning against the statue of your beloved Archon, blood coating his body and smearing it on his surroundings.
The wounded stranger looks up, a guarded look in his eyes as he supports himself with a spear tipped with jade. Blood drips off a strand of his teal hair and he looks like he’s one step away from death’s door, but even then, there’s no mistaking he could still take you on in a fight and win. There’s brown spots here and there that indicate the blood has dried off, which means he’s probably been here for a while. Or maybe it’s bird poop, who knows.
You should probably help the guy, but you can do nothing but stare in horror at the bloody mess in front of you.
The stranger opens his mouth to speak, but you beat him to it.
“Damn it! Do you know how hard it is to keep that statue clean?! Go bleed out somewhere else!”

Genshin Character Design Notes
wanted to write down some stuff i’ve noticed while studying genshin character designs for my rottmnt au in case anyone could find them useful for their own crossovers/ocs.
these are not hard and fast rules as much as they are simple observations and patterns i’ve seen across characters. i am by no means telling people how to design their characters!! these are just things that i personally try to keep in mind while designing and wanted to share for those who are interested.
sorry it’s long, i’m obnoxiously meticulous and wordy 😔
5-star characters will almost always be using their burst in their wish art and the effects will usually take up half or more of the space. many will either have an almost solid background and/or ground to stand on. an exception to both of these would be klee which could be due to her being made very early in development.
4-star characters can be using either their skill or their burst and their effects will usually be pretty minimal with much more empty space around the character. effects are also much more generic save for some talent-specific visuals like sucrose’s butterfly or xingqiu’s swords. even the 4-stars with more complex art look basic next to 5-stars with similar effects (ex: chongyun/eula, xinyan/dehya, candace/tartaglia).
all of the archons so far have had their nation’s scenery incorporated into their wish art. nahida is possibly an exception as it looks like it’s just her burst, even though the burst itself seems to be based off of sumeru’s architecture, but this could also be due to her being isolated compared to the other three.
i feel like this one’s a given but long loose/draping fabrics and dangling ornaments are basically a requirement. this game has gorgeous cloth physics and they very much like to use that to their advantage in their designs.
also the characters’ movements and combat style often play a part in how they are dressed, especially in regards to the cloth physics. characters with quicker and more active movements, like sword users or those with more energetic personalities, have smaller capes, wear pants/shorter skirts, and overall have fewer loose fabrics to obscure those fast movements; their clothing/silhouette tends to hug closer to the body. meanwhile characters that have less movement and/or are more elegant, like catalysts, will have longer skirts or other long clothing items that accentuate those types of movements better. there are no strict rules for this one, but in general the clothing should complement how the character moves, not work against it.
most characters will have a very unique hair style/coloration (yelan, dehya, xiao) or they will have hats/hair ornaments (shogun, shenhe, childe) and many will have both. either way, their hair and head is an important point to add visual interest.
this one’s kind of specific, it’s just a fun thing i noticed: there are very few characters, if any, without a high collar, choker, or otherwise covered neck. i guess they don’t really like leaving the neck exposed lol.
basically this entire video has a ton of very good observations, but the main thing i keep in mind from it is that characters will “always have an appealing view from behind” since that’s how they are primarily viewed by the player during gameplay. characters in most other series will have a backside of their design that basically gets the job done and not much else. but genshin takes care to have a back view that is just as unique as the front. skirts and capes will have their own unique silhouette and flow. clothing cut, fabric patterns, and accessories will create shapes that are just as eye-catching as those in the front. they are basically almost their own unique character design, completely independent of what’s going on in the front.
the legs tend to act as a sort of “break” for the eyes, especially when viewed from the front. not counting skirts, the legs will usually have less patterning and/or darker, more subdued coloration compared to the torso. many characters will have bare legs or plain colored stockings or pants with large amounts of blank space/simple patterning.
some will have brighter colors or noticeable patterns compared to other characters, but it is almost never the main point of interest in the overall design. ex: yelan, shenhe, and albedo all have very ornate leggings/pants, but at first glance it’s generally drowned out by the brighter colors + higher contrast shapes on their torso.
some characters like razor, noelle, and heizou are exceptions to the pants rule. in these cases, the legs serve to simply balance out the design. razor and heizou’s brighter colors add interest to an otherwise simple and almost monochromatic design and noelle’s armored legs make her feel sturdy and more ornate, fitting for a knight. they are detailed enough to enhance the design, but not enough to take away focus from the upper body.
since the characters spend a lot of time running, climbing, etc, their legs are never completely covered/obscured. skirts, if not split, are knee-length at most. otherwise their animations would probably be a clipping nightmare.
pattern placement is very intentional on every part of the character. fabric patterns will generally follow the cut of the fabric so as not to interrupt the “flow” of the design. repeatable/tileable patterns are almost non-existent, except to add texture to a small area like the scales on zhongli’s coat, dark patterns on sara’s skirt, and glittery star-like textures on parts of several characters’ outfits.
(this one is very iffy and better left to your own judgement, but..) asymmetry is common, but not necessary. in fact, most characters’ silhouettes are pretty symmetrical; the asymmetry is more often in the smaller details like patterns or ornaments/accessories than anything else. more noticeable asymmetry is usually in angled/layered skirts (ningguang, faruzan, barbara) and one-sided capes/sashes (kaeya, alhaitham, wanderer), while the cut of the “base” outfit is otherwise symmetrical. the asymmetry in these designs is noticeable because it is used well, not just often. exceptions to this (namely yoimiya and tighnari) are usually going for a specific look that fits the character’s personal and cultural background and their personality.
aaaand that’s about all i can think of at the moment. i’m sure a lot more research and thought goes into these designs than what is listed here, but i am just one non-professional artist and i am far from knowing all the ins and outs of mihoyo’s design process 😔 these are just a few of the (purely surface-level) visual observations i’ve made while making my turtle au lol.

(1) As one of the 5 Chongyun mains who exists (I even use him as an Rosaria substitute in abyss so he comes to floor 12 when I need freeze) I really hate this lantern rite more than any other so far. Instead of having a story that involved any characters we might possibly play (outside of shenhe and ganyu), use, or who might have character conflicts or quirks, it focuses on some random adepti who will never matter in the grand scheme of things and the concept of music.
(2) Like im being petty bc I like chongyun, but it's not that its only him, it's that he's the most blatant case of casting aside four stars because he has a genuinely interesting character quirk and conflict which is directly ignored. Why did he Attend a Rock Concert? Did the writers forget what happens when he attends rock concerts? is he just an extra? are they all just extras to the unplayable adeptal castes? Kill me.
I sympathise a lot, anon. I know I tend to get it pretty easy in Liyue as a Xiao fan, it never actually feels like HYV cares to do anything interesting with him. I remember my first year of Genshin, rolling Xiao right before the Lantern Rite, reading his mats and thinking "OH, THE EVIL GODS THAT APPEAR IN THE LANTERN RITE. SURELY THEY WILL BE RELEVANT"
And what did I get?
Well, Xiao dating simulator aside, not that! The event was very preoccupied with an Adeptus called Skybracer who did not matter then and has not mattered since. Or Xiao's quest, which really cared about Pervases. Or the Chasm, which really cared about Boscasius. Or Zhongli's quests, which cared about Havria and Azhdaha... All of whom, let's be real, should be less important than Xiao and Zhongli!
Like, fuck me for thinking Xiao and Venti's first on-screen meeting would be something meaningful, right? After the scraps we got when Xiao dropped? Two years ago???
Regarding Chongyun, I'm starting to think his yang energy doesn't exist, because I've sure never seen it, and Xiangling only ever did her insane cooking in her introductory quest and never again despite entering a cooking competition in Moonchase. I start to wonder if Genshin is a little too embarrassed to write those two being as zany as they should be - I know HYV is definitely uncomfortable actually writing anyone responding negatively to Fischl's quirks. I genuinely think they design characters that are too difficult for them to write as scripted. It's wild to me.
And, like. Chongyun has beef with Xiao! It's in his mats!
I have the utmost respect for Adeptus Xiao. It's just... Why must he be so disparaging toward us? He says our repertoire is lacking and our power is trivial. I'm sorry, but I just can't accept that.
You'd think if they ever met it might come up?
Realistically, yeah. I think most playable characters are just designed and their profiles are thrown at the writers to pad out enough to fill out the prerequisite number of Paragraphs and if we're lucky, any of those paragraphs might at some point get integrated into the story.
The Li and Yue cooking styles in Xiangling's story? Nah. Amber's missing grandpa? Nothing yet. Kaeya's sadism?? Towards his own allies? Nada. I don't even think we've seen Xingqiu and Diluc act as vigilantes more than once... since launch, and I don't think we've ever seen Rosaria do it. Remember Collei's storyline in the webtoon? HYV couldn't wash their hands of it fast enough, because it definitely wasn't important in Sumeru! Cyno wasn't the focus of his own quest. Neither was Nilou, neither was Ayato, neither was Kazuha.
This is not the game you come to for strong characterisation. The writers don't really care about that when it comes to the vast majority of the cast. I still feel intense disgust whenever I think about the Kazuha and Scaramouche situations.

✨anon Survival kit
Late to the party but making an entrance!
Club Leader/Club - I think that we should go with Childe / Karate Club Leader. Like xadiac said, we are going to need to be in a club that will not only benefit us later, but also one that will provide us with a useful skill. Having some martial arts skill will enable us to get away from bad situations AND we will have a strong simp who will look after us because we are a club member and we have someone with a moderate degree of influence over the school on our side
2. SKILLS! Okay! so! Hear me out. One skill we should have is seduction. If that last round was anything to go by, we are all horny on main (yes I'm guilty of this too).
If we have seduction as a skill when our collective horny gets us into a situation we can seduce our way out of it.
It will help us decrease the amount of time needed to unlock special horny zones on some characters (because that was a problem)
Look let's be honest. There is no way we're going to go through the next life without getting horny at least once - at least this way we will have a better chance at surviving it
Skill #2 we should have is stealth.
aside from being horny on main we are going to need to get out of the situations we keep finding ourselves in
it will help us collect the notes
we will be able to sneak out to see admirers, or meet with people easier
we really just need the ability to get around quietly because half of the time we got caught really quickly
3. Okay 4 admirers let's go!
Ayato ---> This man is obvious powerful and has some really good connections. He also seems like someone who while not as intense as Lumine, is going to be more of a shadow puppet master. Getting on his good side can only benefit us. Besides we need someone as powerful as Lumine as a backup in case one of the two goes sour. Protection is key!
Lumine --> she is dangerous, powerful, well connected, and we have a home field advantage. We are the childhood sweetheart so there is a soft spot there. While she is still dangerous having her as a powerful ally could save us or give us necessary information in the later run. We need what's essentially the mafia mastermind on our side. Plus a lot of you (me included) are a little too ready to see her and this way we can avoid later problems
Kazuha --> we don't know much about him at this point, but there is no harm in getting someone who is obviously a big player in with us. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he will have some student council influence, or at least information he can pass along to us. He would also just be a dangerous enemy and we can't afford to have one of those right now
Chongyun --> as young-adult-summer pointed out, this man has some serious firepower behind him. He can kill from a distance and he can be used as a balance gauge of how dangerous the situation is getting. He also seems like someone who could get rid of the Day 3 life debuffs we have coming at us. We need those GONE.
4. Okay so I'm going to day it. Scaramouche. He is a student council leader and he is going to be influential, powerful, and someone we will want on our side. Having him at a crazy high affection level instantly will mean that we will have a lot of protection at school and he seems like the type of person who will give us backing secretly and from the shadows. Hello instant protection AND least we forget, he is the reason we have the Day 3 debuffs. Getting him on our good side and happy will only benefit us.
We should give the first kiss to either Lumine, Scaramouche, or Childe. Each is ridiculously powerful in their own right, and all of them have a degree of influence that isn't outwardly obvious (some have more power than we know at this time). HOWEVER. Since we can only pick one I suggest we give it to Scaramouche if we go on a date with him, or Lumine because of the childhood sweetheart aspect and how much this could be to our advantage.
Your survival kit has been received! (>^ω^<)

(Angst warning. But it's for character development I swear! Sorry to the little KK13s, but how else are we to reach our happy endinh)
if the FL dies chongyun could pretty much take her place...heh
Which is another whole Matter to discuss...
It could essentially be chongyun's fault because the FL's plot armor are her main leads and if one of them is caught lacking on his duty well... She's doomed.
(and what's an isekai world without it's FL?)
Maybe one time, the female lead is in danger (maybe brought on by the duke himself) and chongyun is in the area but he does not bother to try to help because he knows another main lead could come to her aid. Except no one does. The FL actually Dies.
(does she die in his arms, smiling gently as he looks over her in terror and regret? Or is she just dropped down a cliff to never be seen again?)
Chongyun understandably freaks out. Because the FL is the one who leads the story to its happy ending right?
Nevermind mind that, the fact is that it's his fault. it leaves him anxious for the world's outcome and guilt-ridden because he set the story irreversibly down hill.
Because he was there. he had unintentionally caused this. He had seen her fighting for her life, desperately, as if she knew no one would come. He killed her by just standing there.
And she showed herself to be a well-meaning person albeit self-righteous to the point of conceit. She was innocent and an innocent's blood covers his hands.
This is his loss of innocence.
Chongyun's internal conflict intensifies, leading him to think that maybe HE'S becoming the villain when, before, he was just siding with the villains out of survival.
He then reconciles with the fact that although this is a fairytale world, it's still the real world in a sense and it's his world now. He can't treat it like a fairytale anymore. Either he plays by its rules or he suffers the consequences of a vague outcome that he has no control over.
He can't be leading the villains to a happy ending as he has been doing all along. (chongyun is still in the mentality that the FL and the CP are the good guys... Technically they are though... )
(uhm... I may have taken inspiration from miss not so sidekick.)
I think this conflict might kick start the conflict between chongyun and the duke...maybe?
Then comes chongyun's great betrayal... As he sides with the CP.
It all ends fine though because chongyun becomes the new FL. Does all the main leads pine for him? Probably not. Instead, they turn into antagonists as is the case with the CP.
Hm, i think this would be major spoilers so if you decide to use this idea you don't need to reply to this ask :>
Actually, you are not obliged to reply to any of my asks since I tend to ramble a lot and I don't think anyone enjoys reading this kind of long-winded rant.
This has sat a while in my drafts but I hesitated because of how long it is *sigh*
I've sent this mainly for your perusal anyway so I don't really mind.
(3)
chews on your liddol brain.......... w-why is is spicy........ weeps............... eats....
I HAVE READ MISS NOT SO SIDEKICK SO I GET WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.......... I GET IT.............
i'm replying to it regardless >:) my blog my rules...... you entertain my isekai au craziness, you get the kk13 pin of approval. i might not use everything, but you do a worthy job by fuelling my brainrot. your god sanctioned duty. thank u, funky little anon. pats you gently

So, I'm new to genshin, right (User ID: 664777468 in NA, friend me if you want :)), so I don't have a great roster of characters. Knowing that, I, as a proud Kaeya main(simp), planned one team (Kaeya, Xingqiu, Chongyun, Kazuha), and then planned a second (Kaeya, Bennett, Xiangling, Chongyun) that didn't require many more characters. I'll deal with altering the second team for Spiral Abyss later.
So, of those, I pulled for Bennett on the standard banner (i spent 30 dollars for my impatience) mainly because I quite desperately needed a pyro character that wasn't amber (i hate the bows in this game), and I've been saving up for Kazuha because I know his banner is upcoming. Xingqiu is a 4-star that I'm not willing to do another standard pull for, and I have yet to actually bother with the Spiral Abyss for long enough to get Xiangling.
Now, Chongyun is also a four star, one of the four stars featured on the Yae Miko/Yoimiya banners that are currently on. I had 45 wishes, and I desperately wanted to save enough for double pity for Kazuha, just in case, but I don't have much time to full on grind, so progress has been...disappointingly slow.
So I was like, okay, I'll do one ten pull, see if I get lucky and pull Chongyun. First mistake. It is NEVER, just one ten pull.
But it's purple, maybe I got super lucky — oh it's Fischl
Tumblr media
But I pulled a 4 star character, so then I'm like, well, I got a four star right away, so... might as well try again! Maybe I'll get lucky. Remember, I said ONE, it is never just ONE. The pull is another purple — and oh great, it's Yun Jin. A character I actively dislike because of her design.
Tumblr media
But, again, she was a 4 star character, so maybe, just MAYBE, I'll get lucky and pull yun yun next! And so, I'm like, I REALLY have to save for Kazuha...but let's do it one more time. Ooh, this one's purple too! Oh... oh it's SACRIFICIAL FRAGMENTS.
Tumblr media
(This is extra agregious bc Lisa is my only catalyst user with levels. She's level 3)
At this point, I only have 15 wishes left. Because I wanted to gamble on a four star. I look at it, and I sigh, because I want Chongyun, and I've already wasted 30 wishes, so I'll do it one more time, my LAST ten pull, even though i was trying to SAVE. This one is also purple — and oh thank god HE CAME HOME! MY IMPATIENCE HAS BEEN REWARDED!
Tumblr media
This game is dangerous, because I wasn't even like this with Epic Seven. Then again, Epic Seven didn't have 4 stars on banners... i think. If they did it was one of those fine print things that i didn't pay attention to because they made me read and didn't plaster it on the banner itself like Genshin does.
I got my boy, and my pity for Kazuha is intact, so... win-win I guess. I took a risk and I won! I'm never doing this again! ...maybe. hopefully.
Ugh. Back to saving for Kazuha. Pity is at 61, i cut it kinda close, jeez.
Tumblr media
Here's my team as of now, I replaced Noelle with Chongyun. She was a great shielder and a competent healer, but my Bennett has enough ER and HP that he's actually a really good healer! Kazuha will be replacing Aether, and then I'll worry about pulling Xingqiu and getting Xiangling. I'm only AR 27 so don't mind the wack levels. I'm also currently crying because I cannot find Cloud Retriever on the stupid rock. I cooked you food you bastard bird stop making me climb this stupid rock over and over looking for you

Hey so I just read the Laser Tag AU and maaaan, now I really want to play Splatoon smh aksksjjdjs
Anywayyy my point is: may I request more hcs but with the other boyos (Childe, Albedo, Bennett, Razor, Chongyun, Xingqiu and maybe Aether if you do him too xD)
Laser Tag ( genshin x reader )
Summary - Genshin characters playing laser tag with you their s/o.
Pairings - Reader x Childe/Bennett/Razor/Chongyun/Albedo/Scaramouche
Warnings - Mention of guns and shooting.
A/N - Added in Scaramouche- But I couldn’t think of anything for Xingqiu. I can surprisingly see the majority of the Genshin boys being good at wielding guns, even though they’d probably suck lol
Laser Tag
Childe
Childe is a beast.
Whether it’s in the terrain of his battlefield, or the streets of Liyue playing laser tag, Childe plays to win. He’s always been the competitive type, enjoying the thrill of battle, or in this case, laser tag.
He loves the game.
And of course, you just have to end up on the opposite team as him.
This game is the perfect setup for an enemies to lovers kind of vibe btw. With him shooting at your comrades and eliminating them from left to right, and you doing the same for his team. Very few people stand against him in this game, and his accuracy and sense of battle.
The two of you will spend the entirety of the game playing cat and mouse. Childe chasing after you while you simply escape his sights every time, taking down his teammates while you’re at it.
Childe isn’t as interested in winning, and once you prove to be worthy of a decent laser tag battle, he tries his best to force you to confront him.
Of course you on the other hand take his reckless behaviour to your advantage to turn the game in your favour and strike down his team. You know it’ll piss him off later when you win.
However, it Childe does manage to catch you…
The two of you will fight, that much is obvious. Dodging and attacking him, he will get very into it. Maybe a little too much, but you don’t give in, not until the very end.
Not until he’s on top of you, the two of you toppled over a bunch of hay that cushions your fall when he crashes into you. Not until he’s holding the plastic revolver against your temple, staring straight into your eyes with his signature smirk.
He might sneak a little kiss in there just to throw you off.
But in the end he will make sure he wins, or rather, he eliminates you. He doesn’t care if he doesn’t win the entirety of the game, taking you down was satisfactory enough, and he feels well accomplished and content after.
Would definitely rub it in your face.
If you brush it off as something you didn’t really try in, be prepared to be pinned against the wall and kissed until you admit that you were in fact, doing your best. And yes, he won fair and square.
Bennett
Omg this precious boy-
Bennett will try his hardest, stick by your side and shoot at any approaching target. Considering that the two of you are on the same team, he will promise to protect you.
With one problem.
No matter how well he aims, whether it is going to hit his target or not, the lazer disagrees. Rather, his terrible luck absolutely ruins it and somehow his lazer point ends up somewhere completely else.
“It changed its direction completely!”
Well… you never know, maybe it’s the gun that sends the lazers ray so far off, but considering it’s Bennett, you know it’s no coincidence.
So you end up protecting him.
Dragging him from place to place and shooting down your opponents, the two of you spend your time tripping over random large ass rocks ( with only Bennett’s terrible luck to blame ) and attacking opponents.
You make sure that Bennett is not shot, no matter what. And you give everyone else a terrible glare that basically screams that if they shoot him, they’ll face your wrath.
Nobody shoots Bennett.
By the end of the game, he’ll be grinning ear to ear. And even if he didn’t manage to eliminate anyone, he’ll boast about how his amazing dodging skills pulled him through the game. You’ll agree, lacing an arm around his shoulders and pulling him to the good Hunter to get a good meal.
Just to buy one though, the poor boy can’t cook for his life.
Razor
“Razor… very confused.”
The wolf boy has difficulty with the rules of the game, but the concept of pointing the gun at an opponent and shooting them with a lazer isn’t too hard to grasp.
You find out very quickly that Razor is actually pretty good with aim.
His hands don’t shake for one, and he is so adept to his surroundings that people struggle finding the source of their depleting health. Despite being overall confused at how to play, Razor easily becomes one of the main players taking opponents down.
As someone on his team, he makes sure to keep you by his side the entire time. He understands the elimination part, and he doesn’t want his lupical to get taken out, even if it’s a game.
He can be oddly affectionate at certain times, pushing your face against his chest as he takes out the remaining players in the field you both are in. He will carry you, and take no hesitation when pulling you out of the way, even if it’s a little too rough.
When the game ends, it might take a while to explain to the poor boy that your team won. And that it was a good thing.
Razor will begin to smile when he notices how content you are with it.
Chongyun
This man has the audacity to wield a gun while licking his ‘popsicle.’
Like goddamnit Chongyun, being good at shooting is already a flex, you don’t have to nibble at your popsicle while you’re at it.
You can’t really blame him though, it’s hot outside, and with the sun beaming down on the poor boy's head you know he can’t stand it. Especially with all the adrenaline and yells from opposing teams.
As someone on the same team as him, you take on the job of Chongyun’s personal popsicle restocker, and shooting anyone down once he gets tired. As good as the boy is at shooting, he sucks at keeping himself unknown to the other players.
So you take on the job to make sure they don’t shoot him down.
The two of you are a good team, and if it gets too hot, Chongyun might even let you have one of his popsicles. Of course you don’t have his talent of being able to shoot while having a popsicle in your mouth-
Your team will end up losing though, and even though Chongyun isn’t bothered, he will be slightly worried if you care. The two of you were obviously trying your best, and as long as you both had fun that’s all that matters to him.
But if it really bothers you that much…
He knows you feel comforted by physical contact, so he’ll hold your hand and offer a comforting smile. Tell you that you played well, and that he had fun.
That cheers you up right away.
Kiss him on the cheek please, even though he will flinch at the contact, his cheeks are flushed red and he won’t admit it. But he likes it.
Albedo
Why is it so easy to picture Albedo as a hot sexy stoic mafioso wielding a gun?
Anyways, Albedo is terribly good at wielding a gun. So good at that he only holds the plastic revolver with one hand, never missing a shot as he walks down the streets of Monstadt.
He knows the area well, so good luck trying to sneak up on him. The way his eyes so carelessly sweep the buildings, it hardly looks like he’s trying. Eliminating players with his lasers as he mindlessly strides past the fountain.
Of course, you’re against him.
Albedo isn’t really motivated to play, he’d rather be in his lab experimenting or recording down his discoveries. But he was dragged into this mess, he might as well play his part and support his team.
Albedo won’t hesitate to shoot at you and take you down.
As much as you may be important to you, he plays this game fair and square. He will take you down, or rather, he will try, because you get creative :)
He knows Monstadt well, but he can’t possibly keep his eye on all angles around him. So you’ll aim for his blind spots, throw yourself at him and tackle him to the ground. Simply eliminating him isnt satisfying enough, you need more.
So you turn this into a little game to fluster him.
Tackle him and pin him down, watch him scramble for the gun and then give him a peck on the lips. Watch as his grip loosens, and one of his hands instinctively come to nestle against your hair to pull you closer, and then you pull away.
Watching his idle confusement turn into a light blush on his cheeks is just too good, and how he grows even redder when you start laughing is even better.
Of course his team wins, not that he cares.
The minute the game ends he’s back in his office, conducting experiments. You can go interrupt him though, sneak into his office and press a kiss against his neck. He doesn’t often react or do much to it, but after your linger kiss at the game, he will pull you close and sit you on his lap. Have a proper make out session after you left him hanging with that peck earlier ;)
Scaramouche
This little man is ‘terrifying’.
It’s scary enough that whether you’re against him or on the same team as him, you keep your distance.
“Are you avoiding me Y/n?”
You play on the same team, and even if he’s your boyfriend, you know better than to stay too close when it comes to battle. He shows his cruelty, and you really weren’t looking forward to be put in the middle of that.
‘Unfortunately you didn’t have a choice-‘
Scaramouche will literally drag you, a hand looped around your waist to tug you to his side and take you along with him as he takes down opponents after opponents. He doesn’t ask for your praise, but you still give him it knowing he appreciates it. Mentally.
When he’s tired or bored, he will lean his head on your shoulder, wait there for a bit before jumping back up and shooting a random straggler on the sides. Heavens knows how the boy knows he was there, it’s like he has some sixth sense.
We don’t even want to get into his accuracy and precision, Scaramouche is born a mafioso.
At the end when your team wins, no surprise, give him a hug. Tell him he did well and even if he tries to push away, hold him tight. Even though he could easily pull your arms away if he wanted to, he’ll just pretend to give a little struggle and then give in to your warmth.

Okay okay okay I’ve been thinking about this for a few days now here’s my list of genshin boys most likely to least likely to become a yandere and why:
-xiao. Millennia of suffering and he meets somebody who makes the pain dissipate? Hell never let go.
-diluc. People have died in his arms, he can’t risk losing another loved one... it’s not like he doesn’t have the wealth and resources to keep his beloved by his side.
-Childe. I think he’d be the most dehumanizing yandere - he treats you almost like a child (haha) as be manipulates his way into your heart. And god knows that he gets what he wants.
-albedo is obviously in the top half of this list. We’ve talked about his yandere tendacies before so I won’t relist them but jeez get this boy some therapy.
-razor. Now this sounds surprising but after years of protecting his Lupical, do you really think he’d let somebody he loves and sees as helpless wander alone? I feel hes less captor and manipulative and more of a stalker if he becomes a yandere
-venti. Freedom is his entire world, but can he let his beloved have freedom if it endangers them? One of the most manipulative ones on this list, except he has no clue that he’s doing it.
-kaeya. Maybe you’d gotten to close to one of his secrets. Maybe you’d figured out something he wanted to die. It doesn’t matter much now, all you know is that you were tried and declared guilty by the knights of favonius and were sent into a dungeon protected by the Calvery captain himself.
-zhongli. Has the yandere desires, but refuses to give in. He’s loved and lost so many times over the years and he figures he doesn’t want to take that away from his beloved.
-chongyun. I’ve gone back and forth between him and xingqiu for this one, but I feel like these last 3 are all pretty much tied for not being a yandere. However, if he met someone who could somehow null his congenital positivity than he might move up on this list...
-Xingqiu. He has a strong sense of justice and honor, the idea of manipulating, stalking or god forbid kidnapping his S/O is appalling to him.
-Bennett. Literally just tryna vibe. Devotes as much time as he can to make sure any relationship he has is healthy.
So basically:
Everybody on this list: *frothing at the mouth, thinking of ways to keep their S/Os with them*
Bennett, Chongyun, Xingqiu and to some extent Zhongli: what the fuck
Your list... Simply amazing. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m beginning to wonder where other characters would sit on the list. Mainly Scaramouche though aha oops Anyways, please never stop sharing your thoughts!! They are so GOOD!
Xiao’s backstory and past is just perfect material to fuel his yandere desires. He’s suffered for so long and has never really experienced positive emotions, let alone love itself. The poor adeptus is always brooding on his own and here comes his darling, bright and happy and just...perfect. They’re like a glimmering star in his murky darkness and he wants to treasure them. There’s no way he’s going to let go of the feeling he gets when he’s with them, nor is he going to let them leave his side.
It makes sense that Diluc would also be at the top of that list. He’s got the making of a yandere, especially considering all of the people he’s lost in his life. Now that he’s found someone so important to him, he can’t risk losing them. It would destroy him if he found out that his darling got hurt or was even killed because he wasn’t taking enough precautions to keep them safe. He’d definitely blame himself if something like that happened.
Childe, pspspspsp!!! The power this man holds... Omg he makes for such a terrifying yandere. On the outside, he seems warm and disarming—just your normal, happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He’s not dangerous at all! No way. But under all of that falsified charm is someone who knows how to pull strings. He’s a Fatui Harbinger, so of course he has the means of getting you wrapped around his finger. It’s not all that hard when he’s got money, power, and strength. Plus, when he wants something he’s not going to stop until he acquires it; Childe lives for the thrill of chasing after you and it’ll be even more fun once he catches you. Someone should send me more thoughts about yan!Childe!!! orz orz
Albedo also qualifies as a neat yandere! Something about yanderes who are into science is just...fascinating to me. It’s also cool because Albedo’s rumored to be a homunculus, so that adds to the intrigue! Albedo has the resources to get what he wants as well. It won’t be all that difficult, and if it proves to be challenging he can just think of other solutions to pacify his darling. He is a researcher, after all, and a good researcher seeks to find the best solution to a problem.
Razor would be a feral yandere. He’s more action than words. He doesn’t put much thought into what he does because it feels more like an instinct to him. He’s just protecting his Lupical. There’s nothing wrong with that! So why are you acting so difficult? D:
Like you said, Venti’s not aware of his manipulation and he just does it because it works. His belief that everyone deserves freedom is probably what really holds him back. He doesn’t want you to feel caged, but that feeling is practically inevitable since he’s always hounding you. Venti is a very suffocating yandere and he doesn’t even realize it.
KAEYA! KAEYA! I love the idea of Kaeya having some sort of blackmail on you—something so bad that you absolutely can’t let the world see. And so he uses that to keep you quiet. If you did stumble upon one of his secrets, he can’t possibly have you running that pretty mouth of yours. But if you do end up spilling his secret, it’s only fair that he shares yours, right? An eye for an eye, as some would say. Kaeya’s very smooth and calculative when it comes to handling blackmail. Whenever it feels like you’re trying to one-up him and possibly escape, he’ll flirtatiously remind you of the power he holds over you. Blackmail is rather compelling, is it not?
Zhongli does have the motive to be a yandere, as you pointed out, but he’s a strange case. On one hand, it makes sense that he’d want to protect his beloved at all costs, but on the other he’d probably be aware of these unhealthy tendencies. Although he probably uses the idea of a contract to keep your relationship going, even if it’s clear you don’t want anything to do with him. But if you do, that just makes it easier on him!
NO BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE SAME FOR CHONGYUN!!! Not the yan!Chongyun piece rotting in my drafts for a month or two now ehehee I had some thoughts about Chongyun but never bothered posting it for some reason. Anyways, I do think Chongyun has potential to be a yandere! As you mentioned, his congenital positivity can become an issue and he doesn’t want that to seriously affect his daily life. So he’s probably very pleased to find someone who can nullify that positivity. It’d be similar to Xiao’s case; Xiao likes someone who can be the light in his dark world. Chongyun falls for the person who can null his congenital positivity and is someone who he gets along with.
The only way I can see Xingqiu being a yandere is if he wants a noble, storybook romance. Okay, that sounds strange, but consider it! He’s a huge bookworm who probably doesn’t exactly experience romance aside from what he reads in his novels. Although he doesn’t dabble in the romance genre all that often, he does like the idea of being a hero and sweeping someone off of their feet. So when he meets you—another fellow bookworm or maybe the two of you are thrown into an arranged marriage—he just feels an undeniable connection. This must be some form of fate or a sixth sense. Maybe he can be the main character of his own story! You’ll just have to cooperate and you can be the valiant knight’s love interest!
Bennett’s vibes are so nice. How could he be a yandere? He’s just too sweet and pure. He’s really just here to chill and gather an adventuring team full of great friends! But if anyone has any thoughts...please share them!
That’s it. I’m writing about Scaramouche even though he’s not on the list. Please, why do I simp so much for him? Anyways, we don’t know nearly enough about Scaramouche to determine his backstory or past. But he just oozes yandere! Most of the Harbingers are probably the same, to some extent. He’s like Childe with all of the power and resources, but whereas Childe relishes in the chase Scaramouche refuses to put up with it. It’s just way too inconvenient for him. He’d rather catch you when you least expect it and then keep you for himself.
Gosh, he’s a very determined and possessive yandere with a strict agenda; this man probably cheats in order to get you. He’ll send his underlings to do the work in his place. They’ll stalk you and report back to him and it isn’t long before he learns of your friends, certain family members you’re close to, and even where you live. It’s terrifying, but this is Scaramouche we’re talking about. For someone so short, he sure knows how to intimidate and beat fear into those below him. Good luck to the poor soul who catches his eye.
I must thank you for making that list! It was lots of fun to consider their mindsets and behaviors as yandere. :D

Theory: Shenhe’s Backstory and Potential Connection to Chongyun
Tumblr media
I originally posted this to reddit, but I was so pleased with my hypothesis and a response I got I decided to share it here as well. Click here for the original reddit post because someone made a good point about how she could be removing herself from her humanity in order to ascend.
When a new character drops, I'm personally always more interested in what the character can offer in terms of personality + lore. And Shenhe definitely has the potential to pack a fair bit of it and I was wondering what everyone's prediction of her story was since at least until we have her voice lines + character stories, that's all we can do.
(Scroll to the end for the tldr)
All we know thus far, combined with leaks and her official hoyolab post, is:
She's from a branch family of a clan of exorcists but for some reason Cloud Retainer took her in
In one of her idles she clutches a picture close to her chest, revealed to be a worn picture of a house
Her special dish is meant to replicate a taste she remembers
Her Constellation means Crest of Sorrow probably meaning she has a troubled past (plus she’s a cryo unit lol)
She has physically changed due to eating and drinking as if she were an adeptus
Her name card implies that her white hair isn't natural but a result of her hair turning white at a young age and her model kinda indicates that as well with the gradient of white to gray to black and is considered a sign of sorrow in Liyue
She's likely going to be related to Chongyun.
Not because he's the only other character in the game who is from an exorcist family but Chongyun's opinion of her isn't available yet until we complete a currently unavailable quest. Can't really see why that would be the case for his character specifically unless they were from the same clan or he is somehow tied to her backstory. (Yes I know Ningguang and Xiao’s are locked for her as well, I just mean that it doesn’t really make sense for Chongyun’s unless it is especially important).
I think there might have been complications with their presumed same clan. I'm not sure if Chongyun is from the main family or another branch family that is more favorable (I have to look through his lore and max his friendship), but maybe Shenhe's clan fell out of favor (sort of like how Kazuha's clan fell into ruin) and she was sent away to avoid the subsequent fall out by her parents?
Wanting the best for their daughter, maybe they even completed a trial of sorts and begged for Cloud Retainer to take in Shenhe as a disciple in order for her to be strong. Now after all these years of being away with an adeptus, eating adepti food, and her family faction gone she could feel like she has no real place to return too but still yearns for that time in her life when she was with her family.
But maybe she still feels a sort of attachment or loyalty to the clan, or at the very least has a soft spot for Chongyun because they grew up together. Well assuming that Xingqiu's assessment that maybe she dislikes him for hurting someone she is close to is correct. If her and Chongyun's voicelines reveal that they are close/family, that could actually be the case with Chongyun often being teased by XQ.
Also maybe her hair turned white from the stress of it all or is a result of her difficult training, but from what is being implied so far her hair used to be completely black. I also think that maybe her eyes were dark in color originally too but maybe specifically changed after she began consuming the divine herbs and dew because her eyes are really unique. They're so opal-like and look like they reflect different colors depending on the light, not to mention the white pupils.
There aren't too many characters with unique eyes in this game and when they do there's usually an explanation for it: Kaeya's from Khaenri'ah, the Archons are Archons, and Hu Tao well....... idk man, Mihoyo explain why her pupils are like that lmao. I love it but I have so many questions about that.
Anyway that summarizes my thoughts so far, that will either be right, not too far off, or completely off and we'll learn more the closer we get to 2.4's release date. What do you guys think her backstory will end up being? How do you think she will play into the main storyline with Lantern Rite around the corner?
It's looking like we will have to fight Osial again and it would be so cool if we could do a fight where, like before, throughout the fight the adepti grant us boons to help fight and Shenhe's adeptus-like build could also grant us one!
(TLDR: I think that the branch family Shenhe came from fell into ruin and after doing some sort of trial, they asked an adeptus to take in their daughter in order for her to escape the fall out (75). Also she might help with fighting Osial like how they did in the Liyue Archon Quests)

so... i think i've achieved consistent one-phase pyro regisvine by leveling up kazuha's burst to 6 and bennett's aquila favonia to 85. which is good. but it can be better. i want to get to the point where popping chongyun's burst is enough to kill it. for now i still have to do some normals and a second pop of his skill in order to kill it
#⇢₊˚⊹ 🩷∥ruby∥yo,ide yo !!#after raising kazuha's burst to level 9 i'll work on bennett's burst next#i want to exhaust all other options first before crit fishing yet again#i would crown bennett's burst as a sort of thank you for carrying me through the entire game alongside chong#but i want to triple crown cyno first#plus talent level 10 is a massive investment and for now i just don't think it's worth the hassle#i have 6 crowns in total. 3 of which are for cyno while 2 will go to bennett and xingqiu's bursts respectively#still haven't decided who to give the last crown to#i love collei and she was part of my main team the longest out of the other flex members#but i just don't use her outside of archery puzzles these days. and those don't require high talent levels#yanfei is my third dps but i don't feel as strongly attached to her yet as i do chongqiunett collei and cyno so idk if i'll crown her#i might triple crown xingqiu tho if the day ever comes when the temptation to build him as a dps finally consumes me#cuz i'll definitely have at least one more crown by the time that happens#in any case,i'll hold on to the last crown for now and see what happens#(yes i know there's no real point in leveling up cyno's normals. but my first triple-crown is chongyun; that should be enough to tell you#that i crown my characters out of Love™ and not practicality#(although i do have to think about that too. crowns are limited after all. if i had my way i would also triple crown benny qiu and collei)#(and also level all of them to 90 because sentimentality is a force that has become too strong for me to beat)#(it is kinda satisfying to see their exp slowly inching upwards tho. benny's about two-thirds away from level 81)#(i only wish i ascended all of them at once so exp would serve as a metric to see who gets the most use)

You asked for it :> So may I request the rest of BSD playing Genshin? 😘🥰
Darling, since I can't write that many characters in one go, I thought I should give you something special. I present... 💫 women 💫
Women of BSD as Genshin Impact players
tw: you're in bsd fandom, you know all the tw there are by now
Kyouka Izumi- Assasin in the streets, babysitter in the... Genshin Impact
Kyouka is that cute, stubborn kid that overfixates on things. Atsushi is things. Look, we all know Kyo-chan is mad intelligent and talented and it shows in her game play. Right off the bat she got the sense of the gameplay of every type of character and decided what works best for her. She knows what type of team she's going for and knows how to manage her materials wisely.
When she plays alone, Kyouka works towards bettering her characters and pushing through the storyline. Her favourite way to play the game is with Atsushi, whether alone or in co-op with others. Playing with Jinko is a huge win-win situation for her - she helps him beat up whatever he needs to take down and complete puzzles, he gives her praises and gratitude. And materials, but seldom does she take them.
Her main job, though, is to protect Atsushi and his world from the otherworldly evil known as the suicidal maniac, Dazai Osamu. She's fairly successful.
Main Team: MC, Klee, Keqing, Rosaria
Sub Team: MC, Qiqi, Fischl, Hu Tao
Mains MC, both for her flexibility with elements and because she likes being the little sister to Atsushi's male MC.
Yosano Akiko- retired nurse, now a terrorist
Did you really think she'd stay a healer without having the sadistic satisfaction of hurting people in grotesque ways? Nay. She doesn't have a single healer on team. She either has a teammate who's a healer like Haruno, or she wastes abundance of food until she can teleport to a statue of the seven.
Her game play is on crack, basically. She has several energy spurs, sometimes several times a day, where she rages through the game, before losing interest and going shopping. It's very possible with her that days can pass before she feels like playing again. Then she binges the game for hours and repeat.
When i say she acts like on crack i mean it. She has rage in her veins instead of blood. She tanks her characters and goes out looking for fights with worst possible opponents. Hell, she'll under equip her party just to see how many mofos can she take down in weak state. Spoilers, a fair few. She does die quite a bit, and is almost always out of food, but she's just as stubborn as she's crazy. Those two thing correlate probably. Which is why she made Azdaha her bitch. Her party consists either of strong, hot milfs women like herself, or twinks. You won't see someone like Childe disrespecting her vibe.
Main Team: Beido, Venti, Hu Tao, Rozaria
Sub Team: Lisa, Yanfei, Ningguang, Xingqiu
Beido and Lisa main. Bad bitches only.
Naomi Tanizaki- the fangirl player
She basically collects the cutest characters possible.. That's how she chooses her characters, based on cuteness. She went for the hot ones first to pull her brother but she got jealous and changed her tactic. You know she's spending her money on character skins and certain banners. She's insanely lucky tho?? She got Qiqi on the standard banner as her first 5*, pulled Klee on her banner in little over four 10 pulles and got Diona eventually anyway. Baraba and Xiangling were free and she mained Xiangling untill Klee rolled in. She spent some money on Venti and was already in pity when Ganyu came around. She's fully ready to whale for Kokomi though.
Now i know i said she's incredibly lucky, right? Yeahh that luck has to turn against something to keep the balance and well... she's still crying over Chongyun.
She usually co-ops with her brother, it's a daily ritual. Loves co oping with everyone though, mostly Haruno, Atsushi and Kyouka. She made online friends as well. Actually, there is one person she co ops with almost as much as she does with her brother. IchiGawa is her Genshin bestie and they talk about their crushes and infatuations besides the game itself. Her friend is the only secret she keeps from her brother.
Main Team: Klee, Diona, Venti, Barbara
Sub Team: Razor, Xiangling, Xingqiu, Qiqi
A Klee main.
Haruno Kirako- the healer
Literal angel. You need her, i need her, ADA needs her, the president needs her, just... yes. Her whole team consists of support- healers and crowd control characters. She was a f2p at first, but realised she earns her own money and can spend it however she wishes and she chose the monthly cards.
She's a necessity, point blank. She can get intimidated by new foe at first, but when backed up by her friends, she becomes determined and flexible. Pays good attention to her teammates, most importantly, their health bars, and acts accordingly.
The only reason most of them made it as far as they have, being as reckless as they are.
Main Team: Albedo, Barbara, Jean, Venti
Sub Team: Qiqi, Noel, Jean, Xinyan
Mains Albedo and Barbara
Fan fact: She's very fascinated infatuated with Albedo!! He's even her home screen and has posters and key chain of him.
Gin Akutagawa- that cottagecore assassin
You may be wondering what that could even mean. Let me tell you, she brought Animal Crossing to Genshin Impact. Sure she takes care of her characters and they're pretty powerful, but she kicks ass in real life as well. The game is her little getaway, especially since Serenity pot has been introduced. She's been making away her home for her and her brother characters. You can see her chop wood, collect materials, taking pictures with her friends and her brother, sometimes of pretty scenery and cute moments. A very wholesome player.
She's the type to help her friends explore their world and help them find oculi, open chests, shrines, collect flowers, mine... She's very patient, but if she sees her co-op teammates struggle with something, she'll jump in to help do it herself untill told to back off. In which case she will listen and silently give her support, usually with the cheering stickers in the chat.
She's f2p! Sure, she could get the monthly card at least, as Ryunosuke told her, but she really wants to enjoy the game on her own terms and have what she does through her own effort and hard work. It just feels satisfying to her and more personal.
Main Team: Jean, Ayaka, Diluc, Barbara
Sub Team: Doesn't have one! She just changes characters if certain elements are needed.
Jean main!! She admirers the relationship her and Barbara have. While she's the younger of the two, she's taken the mantle of the older sibling, in a way, and is looking after her reckless as heck brother and cares for him like Jean does for Barbara. Jean is also a wonderful person in her eyes and Gin harbours great respect for the blonde.
Higuchi Ichiyo- IchiGawa 🤡
I love Higuchi so much, but my girl is a mess and a half. Help her, please. No, really, she needs help. She's been over compensating for not being dramatic and eye catching in the battlefield, and has now found a new way to prove herself to her Akutagawa-san. Problem is, as soon as she sees a potentially powerful character, she has to get them and boost them to the havens... yeahh, good thing you can't do loans in the game, otherwise she'd have sharks on her ass for having a bill as dramatic and eye catching as Tsunade's from Naruto. Our girl out there turning heads for wrong reasons. She's definitely spent her pay checks on the game "oh no no, i just buy the monthly subscription, ehe" ehe my ass, you bankrupt bitch. Baal is coming and she's looking to sell a kidney. No, it's not her own and no, it doesn't have anything to do with the game. It's a mission, for God's sake.
But hey, the game is a good investment for her! She even made a friend, one that totally understands her how she feels!! They're very alike as well, ready to do anything for the person they love. The two talk about love a lot and have bonded over it. Higuchi is actually a jealous and a protective type of person, so she hides her friend from Gin and Tachihara like snake hides it's legs. If only they knew 🤡. But it's better this way as they both have a certain sense of normalcy and familiarity they were missing in their daily lives. (Higuchi and Naomi meeting scenario when?)
Main Team: Xiao, Fischl, Xingqiu, Diluc
Sub Team: Baal (soon?), Venti, Ganyu, Zhongli
She mains Xiao because he reminds her of Akutagawa-san and yes, she uses characters from her sub team when playing with others.
Fan Fact: when she was asked why her username is IchiGawa, she said she's like a river 🤡 No, it does absolutely not stand for Ichiyo Akutagawa.
Ozaki Kouyo- the husbando and loli collector
Don't get the wrong idea when i said loli collector. She just needs to adopt them and look after them. She also enjoys watching her precious babies kick ass like her Kyouka. But that's a two way sword, because she gets angry when they die. Savage.
And yeahh, the real reason she's playing the game... Mr Zhongli. She switches often between eng and jpn audios because she can't decide which sounds sexier. Also, Mr Diluc? Yes, she would like to be served one sex on the beach please and thank you! Ah, Mr Kaeya, a perfect window of opportunity, yes.
She has a huge spot for the teenager group as well. Razor, Bennett, Fishl, Xiangling, Xingqiu and Chongyun are also her kids. She just finds them very precious (don't we all?).
Main Team: Zhongli, Kaeya, Bennett, Diluc
Sub Team: Diona, Klee, Qiqi, Sayu
A Zhongli and Diluc main.
Bonus:
Elise- the evil lackadaisical player
Mori found out about the game from Higuchi and Tachihara and introduced it to Elise, telling her she should make a team of sweet little girls like herself and have fun going on adventures around Teyvat. In response, Elise made a team that, not only does it not have a single child in it, but is using it to gaslight and bully Rintarou.
"Why aren't you smart and inventive like Albedo?"
"Why aren't you as passionate and persistent as Sucrose?"
"Look how capable, loved and admired Ningguang is. You could never."
"I wish i had someone as strong, caring, handsome and rich like Childe looking after me. He would treat me like a real princess. "
Mori has been crying rivers ever since.
Thing is, Elise isn't even that interest in the story. Actually, she couldn't care less. Some characters are interesting to her and she likes the graphics, but other than that, she's mostly playing the game to torture the greasy doctor (as she should).
Main Team: Albedo, Sucrose, Ningguang, Childe
Sub Team: doesn't have one
Doesn't have a main either, she plays whoever she feels like playing.
I wanted to add Lucy too, but my mind wasn't cooperating ;-; Sorry about that. I do hope you liked this, Eli 💛

stormterror and lantern rite?
Genshin Ask Game!
lantern rite: what is your favorite cutscene in the game so far?
My favorite cutscene is definitely still the Lantern Rite--the one where Xiao's sitting on the hill just outside of Liyue Harbor, looking up with awe at the thousands of glittering lanterns filling the sky.
It makes me tear up because...even through his millennia of living, that was the very, very first time that he let himself enjoy something for the sake of enjoying it--not because it reminds him of anything, not because it is his duty. And also because it was, in part, a tribute to one of his friends who has long since passed. Ahhhh just thinking about it I'm (':
stormterror: if you had 4 all sword, all claymore, all polearm, and all catalyst teams what characters would you put on them for fun?
Ooooo okay okay okay lemme just (I also threw in bow as well for fun ehe)-
In order of slot as well:
Sword: Traveler, Qiqi, Kazuha, Albedo
Claymore: Sayu, Beidou, Chongyun, Xinyan
Polearm: Raiden, Xiangling, Xiao, Zhongli
Catalyst: Kokomi, Sucrose, Lisa, Yanfei
Bow: Diona, Venti, Amber, Yoimiya
And then under the cut are some explanations if you want to read them nodnod
I'm pretty picky with how my comps are ordered-
For the most part, I'll put characters in this order: Healer, Sub Support, Main Support, DPS. This only changes if there's a dedicated shield character or if the team is predominantly supports built w/ DPS capabilities (all sword team).
The only exceptions are the all polearm team--because there isn't a healer and instead there are two supports, one skill/burst support, and one DPS--and the all bow team because Venti inexplicably feels like a 'second slot' character to me. I don't have an explanation for it ehe
THAT BEING SAID-
All Sword Team
Overall, a pretty solid team! There's lots of flexibility due to Qiqi's healing and Albedo's crystalize shields as well as Traveler being able to switch to different elements. Very dependable. Kazuha's there because I love his playstyle--probably has my favorite playstyle above all other characters nodnod
9/10 for versatility and bonus point for Albedo
All Claymore Team
Lots of possibilities for reactions! Namely melt + Overloaded which both are big damage reactions. Unfortunately, there aren't any hydro claymores...but if there were, I'd put them on this team because Chongyun's skill + hydro mean permafreeze. Slap on physical build Xinyan and mannn this team would destroy. Also you can get electro charge w/ hydro electro which is good dot nodnod
8/10 because a hydro character would be better
All Polearm Team
Man, this team would be really good too...Why didn't I think of this sooner?? Overloaded as is does pretty big damage, not to mention you can easily just switch to Raiden, Xiangling, and Zhongli for their skill before switching back to Xiao and just going to town-
7/10 because Xiao's passive HP loss with his Q as well as Zhongli's skill and Raiden's bright ring of purple effect visibility
All catalyst Team
Another that's pretty focused on reactions! Luckily, catalysts give reliable and consistent application of elements because...well, the attacks themselves are only elemental. I actually have nearly no experience w/ Lisa because I got Beidou really early on and used her in tandem with Kaeya for superconduct so I don't have much to say-
Also because of the four characters, I only have one actually built and only use her once in a while (Sucrose).
8/10 because stamina drain is a big problem and my experience w/ a catalyst based team tends towards having to bunnyhop because my stamina bar is empty. But also in this case, Kokomi would def help w/ her healing
All Bow Team
Ahhh yes yes this would be a fun team. You have the possibility to proc melt or reverse melt (which deals more damage than melt), you get a shield, healing, cc, and also have a great aim/charge shot person (Amber) as well as a great auto attack person (Yoimiya). Not to mention the pyro resonance giving that attack boost.
The only downside is that, apart from Venti, the team is very 1-target based. However, Yoimiya alone does enough damage for that to not really be a problem.
8/10 because the downside, but other than that not too shabby

outtakes [15]
Xingqiu lets himself into Xiangling’s house, waving at her father as he passes the man who’s going down the stairs to return to work in the restaurant.
When he lets himself in he’s surprised to see Xiangling and Chongyun both leaning over the small living room coffee table. Their heads are so close they might as well be resting their foreheads against each other.
Xingqiu walks around slowly, taking in the situation.
When he’d left earlier to buy more beer — and in Chongyun’s case, alcohol free sparkling cider— the power had been out. Thankfully it’s early enough in the afternoon that light and getting around Liyue at this time wouldn’t be an issue, and today happened to be one of the cooler summer days. Granted that doesn’t mean much considering Liyue’s summers are almost capital punishment in their heat and humidity. But it isn’t as bad as it could be. The flat above the restaurant has large windows to let in all that summer light.
The main issue would be managing Chongyun’s condition, but Xiangling had plenty of ice in her freezer and if anything they could borrow from the restaurant downstairs and pay it back later.
Xingqiu is certain if they had been back in their own apartment during this brown out Chongyun would have mercilessly sent Xingqiu off to haul as many bags of ice as he could possibly carry back to the apartment. And Xingqiu would do it because he’s a very good person, despite what others — Chongyun himself — may say about him.
The power came back when Xingqiu had been about five minutes away from returning and he’s deeply grateful for the cool waves of air coming from the AC.
Xingqiu slowly lowers the plastic bag that’s now slippery with condensation onto the ground as he kneels next the coffee table. He tugs at the collar of his shirt, fanning himself as he examines his two friends.
Xiangling’s expression is unusually serious, she’s got one armed locked around the neck of her giant teddy bear doll and has snagged the edge of her thumb between her teeth. Her eyes are narrowed at the contents resting on the table.
Chongyun is in a similar pose across from her, mouth covered by his interlaced fingers as he rests his chin on his knuckles. There’s a slight twitch to his knee, one of Chongyun’s rare signs of tension that isn’t carried entirely on his face.
Xingqiu’s eyes look from one to the other, waiting for this strange tableau to break.
When neither shows signs of speaking Xingqiu reaches over and pulls out one of the cans of beer and sticks it to the back of Xiangling’s bare arm. She jerks, jostling the table when her knee bangs against it and she bites off a sharp yelp. She snatches the can from him, glaring with watering eyes as she rubs her knee.
Chongyun quickly pulls the coffee table closer to himself, in turn, concentration breaking as he stands up to move around and check on her.
“What was that for?” Xiangling snaps at Xingqiu as Chongyun takes over looking at her knee. It’s almost always bruised or scraped, so figuring out if ramming it against the coffee table did more damage will be a challenge.
“Pay attention to me,” Xingqiu says. “You send me off on errands and when I come back I don’t even get a thank you? That’s incredibly rude.”
“You practically live here,” Xiangling rolls her eyes, waving Chongyun off. “Thank you. You’re awful.”
Xingqiu gestures at the table and the piles of White Rabbit candy on them. “You’re welcome. What’s this?”
“One of the aunties brought candy while you were away,” Chongyun says, returning to his place at the other side of the table. He reaches into the bag to pull out one of the bottles of cider, holding it up to the side of his neck. “And Xiangling found a hackey sack.”
“We were playing with marbles but I accidentally flicked one under the refrigerator and didi didn’t want to move it without you,” Xiangling says. “He got worried that he might accidentally drop it while I was reaching under or whatever.”
“It’s a reasonable worry,” Chongyun says. “You should have just stuck a broom handle under.”
“I don’t have a broom that would fit and you know that.”
The broom that Xiangling has is basically a bunch of meter length hard, dry sticks bound together by twine. The diameter of the bundle is about the same size as both of Chongyun’s fists.
“I keep telling you to get a second broom.”
“What a waste of money.”
“Says the person who’s got five cutting boards.”
Xiangling slaps her palm down on the table. “That’s different and I’ve explained to you the difference between those cutting boards enough times to know that you saying that is just you making trouble for yourself.”
Xingqiu quickly waves them both back from each other.
“So what are you doing here?”
“Throw up the sack, grab two candies, catch the sack with the same hand,” Xiangling says.
Chongyun flicks the faded purple and yellow sack up in the air, snatches two candies, and quickly turns his wrist to catch the falling sack.
“I shouldn’t have picked this game,” Xiangling says, gesturing to her own smaller pile of candy next in comparison to Chongyun’s. “I forgot he’s a damn athlete.”
“So are you,” Xingqiu points out, gesturing for Chongyun to pass him the sack. “Or. Well. I should say you’re athletic. Camping and going on all those wilderness exploring trips has to count for something.”
“Me being able to climb a tree and rappel down a cliff doesn’t help me win White Rabbit candy,” Xiangling replies.
Xingqiu examines the remaining candy left — there’s quite a lot, frankly — as he tests the sack in one hand. He gives it a few experimental tosses, gauging the weight and feel of it. Then he makes his go. He gives the sack a sharp toss upwards and quickly tries to grab two of the wax wrapped candies. But he miscalculates and his fingers brush against too many. Gravity seizes hold of the sack and brings it down with a harsh thump next to Xingqiu’s wrist.
“See? Harder than it looks, isn’t it?”

Lantern Rite 2022: The Finale
as a xiao lover, my day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable.
the rest of it, though...
 The Story
To be honest, while I wasn’t a huge fan of running around doing errands for NPCs last year, it definitely built a much better sense of community than whatever it was we got this year. I would’ve gladly done more errands if they were excuses to hang out with playable characters – I feel that would’ve been a much better way to develop relationships or see characters interact than what we actually got.
Which was… a 3-part story about us helping Keqing find some missing fireworks – which was a problem that, aside from one fight, she solved herself completely off-screen – and then talking to a bunch of Keqing’s friends (and also Cloud Retainer?) to condescend to her with a make-believe story about a good and healthy work-life balance… bc Zhongli thought that was the best way to help her?
Only for it to turn out that Keqing was already aware of this issue and states she’s trying to improve, and she’s already way better than she was. Well, what was the point then!
On the mystery of the missing fireworks – like the last Dragonspine event, don’t write a mystery if you aren’t willing to write a mystery. If you’re doing off-screen investigation phases, ask why. Is it because you think it’s too hard to write – in which case, don’t write a mystery – or is it because you think the investigation phase is boring? In which case, you’ve identified your main issue right there – if you have a boring story, go and rethink things so you can make one that’s more interesting!
Compliments where they’re due, though - unlike Moonchase, there was a bit more of an effort to integrate the playable characters’ personalities into their dialogue this time. Zhongli expresses some mild annoyance with Hu Tao, who is... very mildly eccentric, Beidou and Ningguang’s rapport actually aligns with their profiles a bit better and Xingqiu exploits Chongyun for free labour. That’s... way better than last time, though still scraping the bottom of the barrel.
What gets me is that we have rematches with Beisht as a random raid with no context in this event. Why? I genuinely get the sense that using the fight with Beisht as framing for the Lantern Rite – everyone coming together to defend Liyue, then having the fortitude to celebrate afterwards – would have been a better story to tell. Something something the age of man something.
Anyway, we’re really unironically going to talk about Keqing’s work-life balance and then go visit Xiao and say absolutely nothing when he says he’s still working during the rite. Really. When in the last 2000+ years did Xiao ever have anything resembling a work-life balance….
The Finale
The ending cutscene in this event was rather impressive from a technical standpoint. In fact, it felt like the finale of a much better event. It kicks off with the NPCs you’ve spent time with in Liyue and desperately hopes you’ll recognise most of them, then moves on to brief scenes of several groups of friends celebrating together.
The issue… is.
Most of these people barely have established on-screen relationships? Xingqiu & Chongyun, Qiqi & Baizhu, Beidou & Ningguang do, but everyone else is much shakier – especially when quite a few of these groups interacted for the first time during this event, and even then their dynamics were watered down because the game wanted to focus on Keqing’s issues instead.
Shenhe & Ganyu spending time together during the Rite is… especially egregious, bc I think those two literally just introduced themselves to each other this event, and that’s it? Ningguang & Beidou had some very flirtatious dialogue, but given how antagonistic their relationship has been up until now (especially on Beidou’s end during Moonchase), that didn’t quite feel right either. And I literally had no idea why Xinyan and Yunjin were so close until I remembered they’re apparently friends according to their bios.
There’s no point showing a grand finale celebrating these bonds when most of them are informed attribute. If anything, it just annoyed me because it highlighted how underdeveloped they were in the first place. No, I don’t count “and their bios swear they’re close!” – show, don’t tell.
 Xiao
Setting aside how laughable it is that this event is about Keqing attaining a healthy work-life balance and we visit Xiao of all people, I can’t say I’m too happy with the continuation of his story from 2021’s Lantern Rite.
Last year’s Lantern Rite Festival focused on three things; the sense of community that is so crucial to Liyue during the Festival, Skybracer’s history and you trying to convince Xiao to come to the Lantern Rite.
Though Xiao ultimately refuses to come to the Rite in the Harbour, it being well out of his comfort zone, you compromise and bring the festival to him, resulting in a small meal with the rest of the staff at Wangshu Inn. The general sense is that Xiao is a deeply traumatised man, and it will take baby steps to help him lower his shields and that we’ve made some progress towards doing so.
Uh, so, this year, Xiao refuses to go with you to the Lantern Rite again, there’s an optional scene where he outright says that “anyone that wants to see him will come find him” …and he spends the Rite alone watching the staff at Wangshu celebrate without him.
Feels bad, man.
I could live with Xiao not hanging out with us if I felt like he had someone else to spend time with – Zhongli, the staff at the inn, Pervases’ temple, whatever. This is especially jarring given that Xiao was absolutely fine going to a quiet, secluded place in the harbour during the Moonchase Festival, so I feel we could’ve tried to arrange something (especially since we actually spent the end of the rite at the Jade Chamber). Unfortunately, it was decided our date this year was with Keqing, so despite this event continuously bringing up our desire to spend time with him at the Rite and even hinting that he might join in, unlike last year we were unwilling to make any compromises to spend time with him.
Really does just feel like we went 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
I wonder if his ‘anyone that wants to see me…’ line was trying to hint that he wanted the Traveller to come to the inn again. Sucks to be him if so. I kind of ended this event with a sour taste in my mouth because of it.
