it was only a matter of time, before i would have made another crossover with those two. i can't deny, that they are very 1:1 for me, when it comes to comics supervillains. so why not to mix one awesome n' beloved thing with another? esp since funny enough, they do have quite a few similar plot-points. well, the halloween themed costume aside. i mean it goes as far as jack once having the bat-themed boyfriend pal, which reminds me of someone else, i know.

anyho'...

i've tried to make my notes more or less readable here, but they still might be a bit scattered. i attempted to keep them as short as possible, but i just cannot talk 'small'.

1. the first art is low-key based on underdeveloped AU, that i have about the early comic scarecrow n' modern jack meeting n' hitting it off serial killiar style. considering, that both of them possess killing methods, which have a noticable tradmark to it, i imagine that they will leave one hell of a mess behind, while traveling across the country. in that timeline, batman is dead. n' jack's shitty foster dad was killed off earlier on. neither of them knows what to do with themselves, since the people who they had *twisted* emotional conection with are gone. without any direction, they meet in the middle, n' decide that they can as well team-up n' try to make being a villain fun again. jon might experiment on their victims *or torture them if its his ex bullies* n' then give them to jack, who would scoop their brains out and put candle inside their skull. n' uh yeah, he literally did it in the comic. i was honestly surpised that marvel come up with smth that creepy. it really sounds more alined with dc, if anything. but either way, here they are. two *grieving* psychos going downtown. they will make one another so much worse, i imagine. n' they will totally kill that npc dude btw.

2. dark magic n' the drip. or jon n' jack at their corniest. like, jonathan looks like he watched too much the nightmare before christmas n' jack dress up like count dracula for no reason. it's so random-ish n' cheesy. but with this being said, i love both of those designs, n' think, that they really suit the vibe of comic issues in which they were featured. jack always came off as a he-witch to me, but it was nice to see it being played on in a different way. n' then, crane really rocks his own outfit as well. i totally need to draw him in it more often, haha. they dress up for a halloween party for real this time. n' well, i added batman n' spiderman into the mix here, bc i kinda wish that they got to fight / interact with those versions of jon n' jack. it would have been fun for a few reasons. also this can be technically counted as shipping art, but can be viewed as your typical gloating bad guy n' helpless hero thing too. n' to clear any possible questions, i only create stuff with adult peter parker. like cartoon era/late early comics, 20 smth one. i love my spiderman being of age, where he can legally mingle with his villains, not be detained at school lol.

3. the classic four from the timeline, when the comic plots were a bit more ligthearted. aka during the times, when the deadly mercenary n' crazy scientist were robbing banks, instead of harming *torturing* people. i love dark stuff, but there is charm to how 'simple' the scarecrow's and jack's goals once were. n' i love how the scarecrow used to do the lil, dorky dances. it really suits him. n' since at least 2 or maybe, most of jack o' lanterns are southernish in their roots like jon, i had an idea of them having a country dance *in the middle of graveyard* kinda just makes sense to me, haha. batman and spiderman merely happen to find them like that. n' well, it's kinda awkward. esp bc they technically don't do anything bad. i also imagine spiderman being like 'oh, so you have one of those too'. which is mostly a ref to how both the scarecrow n' jack were called 'the reject from land of oz' by other characters. they can rejoice here.

4. the develish & undead duo!! my friend once told me to try n' watch older superhero cartoons, and at first i was like 'welp, they prob be hella boring'. but then i caved in, n' watched a couple of superfriends episodes. as result, i fell in love with their scarecrow's desingh! it was unexpected tbh. usually, i prefer jon's older, classic scarecrow look. so no straw hair, less features exposed, just a hat n' a sack on his head, but their version of him actually did it for me. i find their crane both creepy n' cute. n' i also read on wiki, that he might be undead. so that bit interested me as well. non-human jonathan crane, what a concept! him returning from the grave just to be a menace to batman. n' to accompany him, there is an undead jack o' lantern from the ghost rider comic. his corpse literally got possessed by satan. anyways, both of them raised army of zombies. both of them undead n' prob won't ever get out of their spooky suits, since i don't think that they can. n' funny enough, jack's hometown was called sleepy hollows, if i remember correctly. so they can haunt people there, make it into a truly cursed land.

5. the last one was kinda spontaneous on my part. the other day, i was looking at what kind of action figures the scarecrow n' jack have. saw one, where jon was looking kinda strange, all black n' yellow. which is how i find out that he *apparently* got yellow lantern powers in newer comics, even if it was like for 10 seconds or smth. i didn't read the issue itself, but i found the idea kinda fun, n' his design was decent enough for me to get interested n' wonder what i can do with it. then, a bit later, i saw that jack had a venom-funko figure. i don't think, that he was ever canonically venomized in any of the actual comic issues, but once again, the mere idea of it happening was enough for me to consider doing smth with it. i mean, a venom-like tongue, but its made out of fire? dang. that's kinda cool. so yeah. the yellow lantern scarecrow n' symbiote jack o' lantern being the double trouble. if they weren't enough of a mean goblin-man before, now they surely will be.

Does Kirby's extended cast get underutilized?

This i something I heard a lot of Kirby fans bring up in recent years. That despite big cast of memorable characters, Kirby tends to shove them to the side in favor of introducing new ones and putting the older ones on the back burner never to be used again. But just how true this is?

Warning, rather big post ahead!

Let's take a look at almost all modern Kirby games (including spin-offs) and summarize how each of them treated the extended cast.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land - re-established King Dedede and Meta Knight as the part of the "main four" of the franchise, introduced Bandana Waddle Dee into the main cast after his role in Super Star Ultra. Introduced Magolor. Referenced Wham Bam Rock, Dragoon from Air Ride and Marx via stone transformations. Galacta Knight returns from Super Star Ultra as a surprise boss in the True Arena.

Kirby's Dream Collection: New Challenge Stages (yes, i'm going to count it, since Kumazaki confirmed that Magolor moved to Dream Land when he reformed and this is so far the only game to actually show it), - but, yeah, we see Magolor again in a fairly major role, the first time he appears as a good guy with a bit of a trickster streak to him, suggested that he stayed in Dream Land after he gifted Kirby and co a theme park.

Kirby Triple Deluxe - cameos of a lot of characters from sprite-based games via keychains (of note, Magolor and Yin Yarn got special keychains with exclusive 8-bit sprite artwork), animal trio from Dream Land 2 appear as stage hazards in Kirby Fighters, Shadow Kirby appears as the final boss of Kirby Fighters, Magolor cameos as a painting in the haunted mansion level of the Wild World, the dimensional mirror and Dark Meta Knight return after the long absence. Introduced people of the sky, Taranza and Queen Sectonia.

Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe - Taranza is featured as one of Dedede's friends and supporters on the trophies and on the title screen. It was confirmed that the game itself is set in a theme park Magolor created for Dedede, Magolor himself appears in the final, most difficult, stage.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - Bandana Dee is reinforced as Kirby's true P2 character, Drawcia is referenced and got a special collectible in a figurine, being one of the few spin-off characters to appear more than once alongside Yin-Yarn. Animal buddies are referenced in Kirby transformation sequences. Pon and Con get a cameo in Elline's diary as comedy show hosts.

Kirby Planet Robobot - Oh boy. This one. Well, we of course have a LOT of returning bosses from the past games, such as clones of Dark Matter and Queen Sectonia (giving us a glimpse as her original body before she transformed, adding a major lore revelation past her introduction), people of the sky and floralia are mentioned on numerous occasions in the pause screen descriptions, quite a few characters got brand new artwork via stickers (such as daroach, magolor and taranza). And the last but certainly not least, we have Star Dream which is one of the clockwork stars like Galactic Nova. While not exact same as Nova, it's meant to be of the same species as Nova and the reveal banks on you knowing that, so it's one of the most direct continuity nods in the franchise.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe - this game features, although AU versions, but still, of Susie and Taranza, and, unknowingly at the time, the same Magolor we already know and love in a different role entirely. Although it's technically different versions of the characters, I still count it, because it's still new game and new story that uses familiar faces.

Kirby Star Allies - i will die if i try to list everything this game has. but let's just say pretty much every mainline kirby game (and a lot of spin-offs) were referenced in some capacity, and 90% of major characters of all mainline kirby games are accounted for and PLAYABLE in this one.

Super Kirby Clash - Magolor is once again is the shopkeeper, AU Taranza and Susie have major roles once again, au version of NIGHTMARE of all characters is the main villain, technically making him the first antagonist since Dark Matter to appear in more than one game, King D-Mind returns by the virtue of this game being a sequel to the original Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, Galacta Knight re-appears as Aeon Hero, hinting at his origins.

Kirby Fighters 2 - Magolor and Gooey are playable characters, implied to be a part of Kirby's inner friend circle on the level of Bandana Dee, Meta Knight and King Dedede. The first spin-off to include playable characters outside of the primary main cast. Several newer characters such as Flamberge were referenced via unlockable costumes, as well as appearing (alongside her sisters) as stage hazards on the Jambastion stage.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land - this is perhaps the first Kirby game on this list where I can't say they concerned themselves with referencing the past much. But that's kind of the point, Shinya Kumazaki described Star Allies and Forgotten Land as "sister games" and in this sense, you can say that SA got all the unsubtle continuity and references, while FL is definite step towards new original direction. However, it's still got a lot of subtle connections AND UNEXPECTED canonization of Morpho Knight. A character that was literally introduced a GAME AGO. It's also been heavily alluded that the civilization formerly inhabiting the New World is heavily related to the (eventually) Halcandran ancients, giving us a genuine glimpse at their culture. Even then, this game is the exception that proves the point. Lack of references and fanservice, or major character comebacks is this game's specific weird factor, not the rule.

Kirby's Dream Buffet - this is similar to Star Allies where there's a LOT of references to past games. You can pretty much dress up Kirby as almost every character in the series, including the likes of the Mage Sisters and newly introduced Elfilin from Forgotten Land.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe - Merry Magoland introduces masks which not only make it so all of the dream friends and helpers from Star Allies cameo in this game, as well as new characters from the Forgotten Land, they also make it so this isn't exclusive to purely playable characters. Giving us masks of Hyness, Queen Sectonia and Leongar. Magolor Epilogue is one huge mode focused on Magolor specifically, the first time such luxury been given to someone outside of the primary main cast. Said mode also references and alludes to a lot of games (including Dream Collection), as well as tying it towards Kirby Clash games in another unexpected continuity moment.

As you can see, not a lot of these roles are major, but it's not the main point I'm trying to come across. HAL remembers about these characters and definitely knows that fans love them and want more of them. It's simply the matter of building up the series from ground up after what essentially amounted to big hiatus in the 00s. Returning characters in another mainline game just right after they were introduced would be a tacky move that would be way too safe and complacent. Building up the cast was the right move and they are slowly but surely started embracing it more and more over time. Forgotten Land is distinctly only game in this list that mostly avoided direct returns and callbacks and it still got Morpho Knight.

I guess the version of the Akari From Our World AU where she meets ups with Ash should be called Best Wishes Akari.

Just really like the idea of Akari meeting Professor Juniper because the professor got in contact with Ingo and Emmet about their Hisuian Pokémon. It then evolved into the professor asking for information about Akari’s encounters with Arceus, considering Arceus kind of... ties with Professor Juniper’s #1 research topic.

In the process, Juniper just naturally introduces Akari and Ash to each other. Akari, of course, is internally SCREAMING because WAIT IS THAT ASH MOTHERFUCKING KETCHUM?! And Akari is like... I HAVE to go with this kid on his journey.

Akari says she’s sorta new to the region too, and if he’d like, she’d love to adventure with him. She’s taking the gym challenge too!

Later when it’s revealed that she’s the daughter of the Subway Bosses, Ash is like wait... I thought you said you were new to the region? And she’s like Oh, yeah, so you know Ingo? He disappeared for a few years and I was with him and he sort of adopted me. We fell through time and space and were in the Sinnoh region, like, 200 years ago. He brought me back with him to modern Unova recently and I haven’t gotten to explore much because him and Emmet were trying to make me an identity, because I technically DIDN’T exist, since I’m not from here.

Ash is like... Oh okay. Not the craziest thing I’ve heard. Makes sense.

Cilan and Iris look between Ash and Akari like they’re fucking insane. What part of that made any sense?!

Ash just sighs like... Come on, guys. It makes obvious sense? Literally half her Pokémon don’t exist anywhere else. She uses handmade Pokéballs. She keeps talking like an old lady sometimes. She had no idea what a Xtransceiver is or how to work it. She throws mud at Pokémon to catch them instead of battling sometimes, and it somehow works.

With the information presented they’re finally like. Oh yeah. Okay. You’re right it makes sense.

UPDATE: Ch 3 has been posted, and I'm working on a (hopeful) upload schedule of publishing every other week. The guys just got their first Storm! And had to a share one bed with only ugly pillows saving their dignity :D

For those of you not in the know, I'm writing a SPN Destiel Storm Chaser AU! I only have 2 chapters up currently but I have a lot of plot points figured out. The problem is, while I started this project because I simply wanted to combine 2 of my special interests (SPN and severe weather), I've gotten a but over my head.

See this is my first modern AU. Up to this point I only wrote Canon divergent so this is a big leap for me to make. I went waaaaaay too hard on the technical aspects of this world. I got overwhelmed by all the science and the technical backgrounds of the characters. So, yeah, I keep telling myself to let go and just write the dang thing for funsies and leave some details behind.

I do think yall will like this one, though!

Here's the synopsis:

Castiel Novak didn’t know his life could hit lower than sleeping in the stockroom of the Gas-N-Sip until he's mugged one night after closing. He comes too in a laundromat, dazed and injured, in front of a worried, handsome stranger.

Dean “Cowboy Chaser” Winchester is a storm chaser known for having the best footage of the tornadoes that descend upon Tornado Alley, in the heart of the Mid-West, every spring. He's built a tank--The Imp--from a 1967 Chevy to ride into the storms. His brother is normally his chase partner, but Sam is on bed rest and Dean needs help. He can’t survive and make a profit on his own. Things aren’t looking well until an injured man stumbles into the laundromat.

After some stitches, sandwiches, and stain remover, Dean offers to hire Castiel as his assistant for the storm season. It’s more than he’ll ever make at the gas station. Castiel just has to worry about runaway livestock, dangerous storms, other reckless chasers, and the nightmares he still can’t escape from the worst day of his life.

Will Castiel take this incredible offer? If he does, will they be able to work together and survive what Mother Nature can throw at them?

I also want to show what the vehicle is that Dean's driving. The Imp is based off a real storm chasing vehicle called the Tornado Intercept Vehicle, TIV 2 specifically

Dean built his version around an Impala chasis. So Dean and Cas are riding into this storms, putting their lives on the line for the best footage and data for Sam's Ph.D thesis.

After all, when tornadoes can do this, you need all the armor you can get!

I guess writing this post was just my way of trying to get my mojo back for this story.

Belial is just specifically interested in people with flaws, since that's what makes them interesting.

That's probably why he's so devoted to Lucilius because God knows that man has issues, but I imagine that's why he keeps tormenting the MC, just to see how they'll react. And if their response is deemed interesting or funny, he'll let them live.

He's like a schoolyard bully.

I think there's also something to be said about Belial hating Lucifer for his perceived flawlessness, as Lucilius made Lucifer as basically the idealized version of himself, tall, smart, a bearable personality, powerful...

But by that logic, Belial is like a dark reflection of Lucilius and his worst traits, so to Lucilius, Lucifer is the person he wants to be while Belial is like a walking amalgamation of his worst flaws and everything he hates about himself. That's why he hates Belial. And Belial probably internalized that as well and decided that since Lucifer is "perfect" in Lucilius' eyes, he must be flawless and boring and just came up with whatever justification he could come up with on the spot, as long as he didn't have to admit outright that he's just jealous of Lucifer.

I do think it's kinda rooted in his inferiority complex: he's never going to be as good as Lucifer (which is by design, as you mention in the way Lucilius created them), and he ends up with such an inferiorty complex and an anger toward the situation that yeah, perfection bores the hell out of him. He's never going to be perfect like Lucifer, he's not meant to be. This perfection is what makes Lucifer this loved, and Belial this hated, so instead Belial ends up hating perfection and is bored by it even more, and only find interests to things that are imperfect.

He walks on such a weird line and it's where his dynamic when he's trying to corrupt us is interesting because technically he does so to make us more interesting to his taste. He pushes us to our breaking point to see if that would be entertaining once we drop the whole perfect facade.

But it's why also he keeps playing with us and i doubt he genuinely wants us dead. He wants us to entertain him first and as long as he sees potential into that, he'll keep us alive. But it doesn't mean he'll keep us safe either.

He's soooo interesting i hate this guy goddd (lovingly)

okay so im thinking about your 🏠 imodna au and i feel like they couldn’t meet ALL the bells hells as roommates at once (because that’d be a lot of roommates to get at once lol) so if you don’t mind here’s some other ways they could meet people i’d love to hear your thoughts on because your writing mind is genius

i feel like chet does actually have to be the roommate (or the first, i do agree they all end up moving in eventually) but like. he sees the ad for another roommate and he answers it. and they end up with this curmudgeonly old guy. and i feel like imogen especially keeps telling laudna she’s gonna kick him out (on days when chet is being especially frustrating) and laudna is just like, darling. first of all no you won’t, but second of all, what if he left and just died of old age? how would you feel then? and so imogen puts up with him (until she finally realizes that ofc she does like him, beneath it all)

imogen and laudna have great minds for design and what they want to do. what they don’t have? strength! so that’s where ashton comes in for sure. he’s not technically a construction worker, sure, but they’ll take any job you offer them and he’s a whole lot cheaper too (and shit they’re good at it? and actually beneath their tough demeanor they’re really cool and nice too)

i feel like FCG always has to come along with ashton so i guess they’re just a friend who maybe just tags along one day? maybe ashton mentions that they think FCG would like their new clients?

imogen is at a flea market one day (with laudna of course, laudna keeps her from getting too anxious in crowds) to get barter for some cheap decor and she sees fearne steal something. she wouldn’t care except she was just about to buy it—she chases fearne down and tries to convince fearne to give it to her or she’ll turn fearne in (once fearne realizes that imogen is not really a do-gooder/snitch type and in fact just really wants whatever she just stole, fearne instantly adores her. she does not give imogen the item, but helps her look around the flea market and get good deals on similar things (and sometimes steals things for imogen although imogen doesn’t encourage this))

maybe when they have a second bedroom open, orym is the next to take it? it’s been very interesting watching cr3 versus the fanon version of him because im so used to fanon that im like “oh yeah he moves into town all sad and lonely because of will’s death (and/or not being with Dorian anymore)” but im behind in cr3 and im at the point where they’re talking about the fact he’s actually the most normal/stable of them all and tbh that’s true (although he obviously is hiding all his shit) but for those reasons idk what fits for a good way to get orym into this au

so yeah some of these ideas make more sense than others in my brain so I’d love to hear your thoughts

I hope it’s okay that I decided to tweak your idea, im just avoiding homework and really love all your aus but am especially excited about this new one so my brain was like “ahh them all becoming roommates at once would be awesome but also a little chaotic, how could they all slowly be incorporated to the au over time?”

I actually think that Chetney is someone they hire to help them, ya know because he's good at working with wood and there's a shit ton of waterlogged floorboard in the house. And over time, you're so right, the two of them do grow begrudgingly fond of him to the point that when construction is almost over, they offer him the extra attic room.

Oh my god I love the idea of Ashton being a construction worker and FCG being their best friend that just goes everywhere that they do (I love the idea of modern au FCG being in a wheelchair and maybe Ashton learned construction and shit to help build ramps and lifts for them). And the same thing happens, construction is almost done and Imogen offers the two of them a room.

Orym is probably the only one who responds to the roommate ad. He doesn't know much about construction, but he needs a cheap place to live. And he's the connection between the witches and Fearne, when they find out that Orym and Fearne are friends, she moves in too. So everyone but Chetney is doubled up in rooms.

few posts ago i was made thinking about past cosplays i had, and honestly i realized i forgot... a lot of them??? i pretty much only thought about my last two bc i did them most multiple times and i liked them most. those were dipper pines and wirt. i still have my legit (heavy as fuck) wwii nurse cape for that and i like it a lot.

but i want to go through a list of what i recalled now bc its fun seeing the timeline of fandoms that it reflects. these are semi-chronological, some i dont know exactly when they happened but its in the same-ish era

Holo from Spice and Wolf - i am quite sure this was my first. One of the earliest animes i watched on youtube, and i got a orange wig, made ears out of cardboard, and had a decent tail i got at a furry con. tho i had no clothes that fit, i just wore my normal clothes lol.

Medusa Gorgon from Soul Eater - Hard for me to determine if there was something before this but i am p sure this came before the next ones, as it was 7th grade and before tumblr fandoms i got into later. i bought this cosplay entirely online so it was p good. But i remember wearing it to school and kids making fun of me.

Zacharie from OFF - a little vague on timeline again. I quite liked this one. i had a black wig and made a mask out of paper. i didnt have anything else like a sweater for it specifically. (this cosplay lasted for a while through 9-10th grade)

Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians - iirc this was The First for the tumblr fandoms i got into, bc technically i got into it pre-tumblr and then went to tumblr as my first fandom. however i didnt really 'cosplay' him properly, i had no wig or staff etc. it was 'casual' w a cosplay sweatshirt i bought and that was it. (this cosplay lasted for a while through 9-10th grade. also note at age 16 i cosplayed him light again when i dyed my hair white)

Swag onceler/teen Swag - i nearly forgot this one lol. i didnt have the blue glasses, but it was his highschool one as i had the white button up and pink sweatervest. i dont really remember how much i wore this though.

teen Oneler - another onceler AU guy i cosplayed very lightly but also not for long.

Dave Strider - i only really cosplayed him at first before i read homestuck bc my friends assigned me dave strider lol. i did get into it eventually and i went to anime expo a few times to the homestuck meet, and met a really nice john egbert there too.

homestuck OC "Doubie" (i cannot recall the last name lol) - decided to cosplay my homestuck oc, made my own horns! but i never got far enough to make my custom shirt or anything. (from here forward i really dont know what order these are in)

Sherlock Holmes from Sherlock BBC - yeah. i have a very cool expensive high quality coat though. like REALLY good. i still intend to wear it but its never cold enough here in socal lol.

Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler - i had wanted to cosplay him in middle school, but couldnt bc i wanted to buy the intricate outfits. i was able to get one of the black outfits tho i recall not having all of it? like maybe just the top? idk. i had the rings too and a wig. it was alright and i also owned the classic brown shoes too as i intended to get his normal outfit but i didnt. was frustrated this cosplay wasnt as good as i wanted for a variety of reasons. (note: i cosplay at "casual/modern" version from that meta episode a year or two later when i dyed my own hair navy blue)

Alois Trancy, modern/BTS episode Black Butler - there was a like, behind the scenes/modern/meta episode in the anime, and being blonde i wanted to cosplay him casually. "casual" cosplays for me were fun bc i felt i could be the character all the time and it wasnt weird. i also own Alois' ring too.

Cecil Palmer from Welcome to Nightvale - one very significant cosplay for me tho i think i only did it at a con once, but it was a big one w my friends at the time in highschool, a friend cosplayed Carlos and all of us just really loved wtnv at the time. i was blonde and could fit the role, i had the vest, purple shirt, glasses, and had painted eyes/etc on myself. i did a photoshoot w my friend who did Carlos. I did the whole cosplay to holloween at school. it was a fun one.

Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls - i liked this one a lot and it was very very simple and lightweight, so i did it a lot going forward as i drifted from other fandoms. had shorts, shoes, vest, hat, and wig to match. I cosplayed him further when i dyed my hair brown at one point.

Wirt from Over the Garden Wall - the last thing i cosplayed. i did this one to anime expo twice i think but good god was it hot for that summer con. the cosplay was simple enough i didnt mind it but the cape was heavy- it was a real wwii nurse cape, as that is what wirt had. its genuinely so cool and i also intend to wear this casually like thw Sherlock coat but again, it is never cold here lol. had the whole outfit for this one tho- shoes, pants, shirt, suspenders, hat. i still own all of it and i would cosplay him again for sure.

i think this is it. i love cosplay and a lot of these mean a lot to me and define so many fandom eras for me!! and my attachment to characters is really really strong.... being them in some form always made me so happy and its why i still think about cosplaying some time again.

HELLO FANTASTIC CHOICES ANON DEAR for context (x)

the power of water is me dipping my toes into horror as a genre :) i saw a post about kokomi being a siren once (like, the Creature type of siren not just like oo pretty lady sharp teef) and i was like OH YES I LIKE THAT. it quickly spiraled into the idea that every hydro user is actually Very Fucked Up, and turned itself into a little concept where everyone is More Fucked Up Than Childe. a thing that childe learns firsthand throughout his travels in teyvat :)

so basically it'll (hopefully, one day) be a collection of childe's travels to mond, inazuma, and liyue where he - intentionally or not - meets each of the other hydro users (barb and mona in mond, ayato and kokomi in inazuma, and xingqiu and yelan in liyue). basically, with some help and input from @epistemologys, i took all the hydro users' traits and extrapolated them into something that hopefully elicits a good horror-y reaction, even from someone as battle-hardened as childe. also, he's still pining for zhongli the whole time :)

idw give away too much cause i really like this concept a lot and i hope to find enough motivation to keep working on it, but have a lil snippet!

This was supposed to be a routine mission - maybe a little outside his typical routine, being in Mondstadt and all, but the goal is simple and straightforward: Locate and eliminate a possible traitor. Sure, Ajax is the most logical choice for the job and all, but…well, Mondstadt isn’t Liyue. Better to grab himself a job that won’t put him in the crosshairs of the Qixing. Or one particular funeral consultant. Still, this was all supposed to be easy - he’d even had a lead on the Fatuus’ last known location, up in the church. Viktor, the guy’s called, and he’s been spotted hanging around as recently as yesterday. “Oh! The Fatui guy?” the girl - Barbara, she said - chirps, eyes wide. Not quite out of fear, if he’s looking closely. Maybe just…general intrigue. Must get boring putzing around the church all day, no excitement and nothing to do. That’s what all of Viktor’s letters said, anyway, before they just…altogether stopped. Hence Ajax’s mission out here - nobody just…stops. People don’t just up and decide their horrifically boring lives are just fine, actually. Not that Ajax is all that well-versed in understanding people, but this…yeah, the Tsaritsa was right to send him here.

Lovesick Fool is a fic i actually technically already started posting? (x) it was originally created bc of a prompt, but i had some thoughts and wanted to expand on it after a while

basically, it's meant to be a v wholesome 'zhongli goes with childe to snezhnaya cause why not i mean cause there's Research to be done' all set in a more or less modern au version of teyvat - complete with all the gods, ofc lmao. osial and azhdaha make an appearance in the original fic, but they crop up a few more times as well, though the story mostly is meant to center on wholesome zhongchi lmao

and, ofc, a snippet:

where neil perry is a famous actor

beloved by the masses and mr. anderson’s 6th period class

and like, mr. anderson is a very quiet and soft spoken teacher but he’s hella nice and friendly

so students feel like they can talk to him about anything and he’ll listen (because he understands the feeling of being all alone knowing that no one is going to take a second to just hear you out. not your teachers, not your classmates, not your brother, not your parents) (but anyway)

and though some people like to talk to him about their problems or rant to him, he has just as many students who just like tot talk to him

and tell him about pop culture and shit and a very popular topic of conversation is mr. neil perry

because he’s nice, humble, talented, and handsome

during zoom, conversations like that are a bit hard, so mr. anderson reserves 15 minutes every class for everyone to turn on their mics and socialize and during that time period this happens

“mr. anderson, are you a fan of Neil Perry?”

“huh? the actor?”

“yes! he played puck in the modern version of shakespeare’s a midsummer nights dream.”

“yes i love him! and that movie”

“REALLY?” the class is filled with excited voices, cuz how often is it that a teacher has good taste in movie stars

“i knew u weren’t straight.”

“... wait is everyone who likes neil not straight? cuz i like him and im a girl and im not straight”

“you guys do know i can hear you, right?”

“sorry mr. anderson.” but mr. anderson just laughs.

“this is my husband in high school, playing puck. that’s one of the reasons i love midsummer so much,” he grins like he’s keeping a secret, and not like he just technically came out

mr. anderson laughed again, “class is over, but maybe next time we can discuss this”

it isn’t until a week later when the class in their respective homes, in between homework and other commitments, are watching a new Neil Perry interview that they realize

“yeah, i was really excited for this role, it feels like coming home, ya know?”

“oh yes, ive heard about that, your first gig was Puck too, right?”

“Yes, I played puck at a neighboring school in my junior year. god that play was the best thing to ever happen to me”

“wow, because it helped you discover your love for acting?”

“Well, yeah. I always knew i wanted to try it out but while performing it for the first time in front of an audience, i realized that there wasn’t anything else i could do. but also because i finally got courage after the performance and i finally kissed my best friend. We’re married now”

“awww ! that’s so sweet!” the interviewers voice is drowned out by the thundering of the audience at this revelation

“so what does your best friend do now?”

“oh he’s an english teacher !”

and suddenly it made sense why that picture mr. anderson had looked kind of familiar.

“huh? the actor?”

before the class can object to him claiming the title of neil’s no 1 fan they hear a familiar voice

“AWWW THANKS BABEE! I THINK YOU’RE PRETTY, TALENTED, HUMBLE, AND PERFECT TOO!! HURRY UP END THE CLASS SO I CAN SHOW YOU!!!”

the class gets out five minutes earlier.

same concept but during a lesson, mr. anderson means to show his class some pieces of classic art that corresponds with literature, but instead accidently opens up his wedding photos folder

and the class is greeted with a picture of Neil Perry with his arms wrapped around Mr. Anderson’s waist, both of them dressed up in suits and surrounded by a bunch of other boys and someone who looks older, kissing each other full on the lips and it’s cute and perfect and what the hell mr. andERSON YOUR MARRIED TO THE NEIL PERRY???

Modern day AU, rated for teen and older audiences.

Day 4: AU

Almost normal

York Shin Hospital, Friday, 6: 30 pm.

It was a burning hot afternoon and Machi Komachine had just finished her shift at York Shin Hospital. Despite her youth she was one of the most prominent plastic surgeons of that hospital and her pay check, along as her pink Gucci handbag and her BMW Grand Coupe reflected that. People believed that she was vain and some people hated the way in which she flaunted her luxurious lifestyle, however, the fact was that Machi in reality was pretty much a self-made woman. Born of refugee parents in the poorest slums of the city and often taking multiple odd jobs to make the ends and spending countless nights reading complicate textbooks, first to study in the best technical high school of her city and then in one of the top public universities of all the country, so all those years of sacrifices gave her the right of displaying all her wealth and hard-earned money.

She was about to get in her car and leave when a she saw two teens passing near her.

“Why don´t you have a car yet? I though your family was rich!” said Gon Freecks to Killua Zoldyck.

“I still have no driver permit. And I really don´t want to ask my parents to pick me!”

“Then ask your brothers to drive us!”

“Illumi is working out of the city most of the time and Milluki does not even share his French fries at Mc Donalds, let alone his car!”

Machi feel a bit of compassion of them. For what she had heard Gon and Killua were students and the same technical high school for nurses and future med students that she attended and probably that day they had gone to the hospital for a school related activity. Machi knew that probably they had lots of homework and things to do at home so giving them a small ride could help them.

“Hey, you two! Do you want me to drive you near to your house or a bus stop? I have to pick my fiancé from his job at Hotel Beitacle at downtown and then we are gonna dine out at The Chimera Ant.” Said the pink haired woman.

“That fancy restaurant of Netero Avenue?” asked Gon.

“That one.” Answered Machi.

Gon got a bit surprised after knowing that Machi and her fiancé were going to eat at such a fancy restaurant. Judging for Machi car and general apparence that guy must be also as wealthy as her, probably even more. Maybe that man was a lawyer or a powerful CEO.

“It is near to the subway and Gon´s house, so it seems ok.” Said Killua.

“Yeah, just let me message this to my auntie, so she knows where I am!” said Gon.

Machi smiled at them.

“That is a smart move kiddo, in fact I can even get you directly to your house if you want.” Said Machi.

“Sounds fantastic, but as long as you leave me at the subway with Killua it is ok! Thanks Mrs. Komachine!” concluded the darkhaired boy smiling

Hotel Beitacle, Friday, 7:00 pm

“This is the worst clown show I have ever seen in my life! You should feel ashamed of giving my daughter such a horrible Quinceañera party show!” screamed hysterically a middle-aged man with a mustache to Hisoka.

Light Nostrade was the owner of the famous fashion brand Oracle and one of the richest persons in York Shin City, while Hisoka Morrow was just a brand new clown and party entertainer, freshly out of clown college.

“Sir, your daughter wanted a horror themed Quinceañera party and that is what I gave her, besides she was laughing at my jokes.” Said Hisoka without bothering himself much.

“Did you really had to make a fake decapitation joke involving a man in a toilet? Don´t you think that it is gross and vulgar?”

“Yes, it is gross and vulgar, that is why is funny! Besides everything we used for that prank was fake and edible, we used Nutella and crunched cookies for the poop and cherry jelly and strawberry syrup for the blood and guts! It was very tasty!” said the clown smiling.

“That is horrible! Absolutely horrible! My poor Neon is going to have nightmares caused by your horrible and degrading antics! Not mention your whole butt dance! It was supposed to be a family event, not a bachelorette party in Las Vegas!”

“Hey, it is called twearking, everybody does it now days. Plus, it is a great way to keep your ass in shape!” said Hisoka spanking himself in a comedic way.

“Still, that is so gross and horrible! My daughter is going to be traumatized by it!”

“Well, trauma or not, I will not give you back your 200 dollars.”

“Bullshit! I will not pay you! In fact, I will call my lawyers to sue you for…”

“Sue me for what?”

“Child corruption!”

“Sir, you make your daughter pose in lingerie and skimpy clothes for your stupid brand of clothes, even in magazines aimed at adults. Making a girl like Neon work in such stuff should be labeled as child sexualization and exploitation…” said Hisoka smugly, but before Mr Nostrade could reply him a phone call from Hisoka cellphone interrupted the conversation.

“Oh, sorry, sir. I have to go. Let’s talk about it latter, I got to see someone really important!” said Hisoka, running away without answering his phone, leaving the angry parent alone with his complains.

Outside of Hotel Beitacle, Friday, 7:15

Machi had already called her fiancé five times and he had not even seen her answers. Either he was still in the show or he was just being an asshole as always. Killua decided to play some video games in his cellphone, while Gon on his part started at the window of the car, saying nothing, just contemplating the people passing by the street and the guests who arrived at the hotel. It looked that there was like a big party, probably a Wedding or a Christening, perhaps a Quinceañera or even Bar Mitzvah. He still remembered when he went to Killua´s Bar Mitzvah a few years ago, it had been quiet fun, despite all the fancy etiquette of the Zoldycks family and the weird boyfriend of Killua´s older brother. Every time that Gon thought about that guy he felt chills down his spine. That man looked like some kind of ghost or evil clown, very tall, pale, full of weird hair dye and uncannily creepy. As far as he knew Illumi had already broken with that clownish guy, focusing instead in his career as costume designer for theatre plays and soap operas. Good for him, thought Gon.

“Mrs. Komachine, but how much is going to take your fiancé to get out there?” asked Gon a bit bored.

But before he could have an answer, he saw a creepy familiar face approaching to the car making him and Killua scream in horror.

“Hi, Machi! Sorry for my lateness, I was dealing with work stuff.” Said Hisoka as he entered in the copilot seat smiling, with his face still plastered by his horrible clown makeup and costume.

“Is ok. Just don’t be late again or I won´t invite you to any fancy place anymore.” Answered Machi after kissing the clown and turning her car on.

“And who are those cute guys back there?” said Hisoka smiling playfully at the teenagers.

“Pff… just two kids for the technical high school for nurses. I gave them a little help to reach their homes, cuz I don´t want them to walk too much as I did when had their age. Specially with all those thieves and creeps roaming out there.” Said Machi.

“Ohhh, you are such a sweet woman!” said Hisoka in a low voice.

“I am as sweet as cyanide, so better watch out.” Concluded the doctor in an icy cold voice.

Gon and Killua stayed almost in absolute silence, counting in theirm minds the seconds so they could go out of that car and be free of that creepy clown. Finally, they reached the Netero Avenue near to the subway station both teens rushed out of the car without making any noise asides of a “small thank you” to Machi, running inside the station as the car went away.

“Why the fuck did that fancy lady was dating the ex of your brother?” said Gon still scared by that clown.

“I have no idea and at this point is better to not have any idea of it.” Said Killua, still shocked by the way in which that clown was able to get a hot rich girlfriend despite of being the sleaziest clown he had ever even meet.

The Chimera Ant restaurant, Friday, 8:00 pm

“Hey, Pitou, I know that you have a lot of job right now but, why does that customer is dressed like a clown?” asked Knov, a worried chef to the receptionist.

“Dunno, but it seems that does not violate any dress code. And he said that he liked my new hair dye!” Said the receptionist smiling like a kitten who just cached his first mice.

“Still is very weird and I don´t like him much.”

“Well as long as our manager does not complain there is nothing, we can do about that clown guy.” Said the receptionist.

“But Pitou! She is blind, she is never gonna know that there is a man dressed as a clown here!”

"Then tell her that there is a clown." said Pitou.

"She is never gonna believe me!" screamed Knov.

“Well, unless she or the chef says something that is not our problem.” Said Pitou.

“But Pitou! That clown scares me!”

“Damn, you used to work in the military and now you are scared by a clown?”

“I say that clown is cursed! He looks evil!” said Knov hyperventilating and sweating as he saw the clown approaching to him.

“Excuse me sir, I know that my fiancé already asked for the bill for our table, but can I get another scoop of bubble gum ice cream please?” asked Hisoka to the waitress who just fainted in the place.

"Well, he is not a waitress, but even if he was I doubt he is gonna do anything now that he fainted. By the way I like your clown costume, it looks like a fusion of a diabolic harlequin and Caesar Romero´s Joker. " said Pitou to Hisoka.

"Oh, thanks sweety. Now, let me call my fiancé, I know she would help this man..." said Hisoka.

"Why did think your fiancé is gonna help him?" asked the Pitou a incredulously.

“Fuck off albina bitch, I am a doctor and for fucks sake I will help with this man.” Said Machi arriving to the scene crudely, while she started to examine Knov.

“That´s my woman!” cheered Hisoka, making the receptionist, genuinely intrigued.

How it was possible that a clown like him could date a doctor like her?

That was a mystery that deserved to remind unsolved.

I wish you would write a fic where Susan got to keep her baby for once.

well. hm. what would this look like in my hands. okay, okay, so in this particular scenario, i actually imagine neil was putting 2 + 2 together and finding out susan's preggo right after the move. like, even before susan does. and she's all kinds of alarmed but neil is?? oddly excited?

he's all like, "isn't this great? we get to have a new baby in this new town. what a perfect way to cement our brand new life, huh?"

and susan doesn't want to be hopeful but with neil's positive reaction, she tentatively feels hope anyway. maybe things rly will be different, right?

continues under the cut bc this got fucking long.

yeah, well, neil's good mood lasts until it's actually born and responsibilities ensue. he never had to deal with billy as a baby rly, bc billy's mom took care of that part and also, like. in this 'verse at least, billy was a low-maintenance baby. didn't cry much. maybe he did at first but like, after being dropped on the head a couple times, he just went quiet and didn't rly bother anybody after that. wouldn't get loud again until elementary age. and max didn't come into neil's life until she was even elementary age, so defo past all the baby stuff.

the new infant tho screams like a mofo. everybody in the house is on edge. sleep is hard to come by for the whole household. the care and keeping responsibilities mostly fall on susan but neil holds it against her every. single. time. he has to change a diaper or hold a bottle, as if it's some major failing on susan's part that he should ever have to do anything like this at all.

max tries to help but she can't even hold the baby tbh. it makes her v uncomfortable, she never gets it right and doesn't know what to do when it squirms!! what if she drops it!? plus she thinks baby smells weird even when it's got a clean diaper, an unappealing mashed food and powder combo with a lingering whiff of wet rubber. and billy. is billy. he has to watch it sometimes, naturally. if it's just him and baby at home, he'll blast his stereo to cover up the crying, as long as he knows its other needs have been tended to. like, yk, the "it'll cry itself to sleep eventually," approach. which works actually. metallica becomes the go-to baby lullaby.

but lo and behold, when it's like, let's say 6 months or smth, baby gets an ear infection. like babies do. won't stop wailing. just. will NOT stop. v much in pain and has no other means of communication. neil and max are home. billy is on a date. susan's stuck in a long line at the grocery store. neil had a shitty day at work and he's already aggravated. pacifier isn't working, lil thing just keeps hollering, so. in a burst of frustration, he starts throttling baby. max is in her own room but hears it the second the noises change and hurries to help, blood ice cold.

she stops neil from killing baby sibling but gets a black eye and a bloody nose for her troubles. this is what susan comes home to. i've written a lot of susan kills neil scenarios but i think this is the first one that comes to mind where in this round, it really is out of anger and not fear. both are present, ofc. but the actual act on her part is one of anger. bc she feels stupid that he ever had her the slightest bit convinced a new baby would make anything better. that neil ever made her feel like he'd be better and instead, he chose to be even worse. susan ties him to the bedposts under the guise of a sex thing, convincing neil she wants to treat him to smth special bc he's been oh so stressed out lately. bashes his brains in with a hammer at least 20 times, a la sally challen style.

alas, reality commences and susan goes to prison. ig a long time ago there was this made for tv movie abt this lady killing her abusive husband by setting the bed aflame that gave the public the misconception that women who kill their abusers are typically acquitted, but uh, that's not true. yeah, it was true for the lady whom the movie was based off of, but usually they're convicted and serve unduly harsh sentences for their "crimes." but if i get on that soap box, we gonna be here the whole fucking day, so, moving on now. susan's off to the big house. albeit both baby and max's injuries are documented and considered mitigating circumstances so her charges are reduced from first degree murder to voluntary manslaughter with the potential for early release.

billy's close to 19 so he's an adult, if only technically speaking. has custody of baby and max. i've decided baby in this 'verse is amab but will eventually come out as trans when she's abt ten yrs old. billy tries his best. max tries her best too. baby's nickname is ducky bc the rubber duck?? by far the favorite toy!! baby p much lives in the bathtub, playing with the rubber duck. billy, who would move them back to cali in a heartbeat if it wasn't so far from susan's prison, defo relates. he's also aquatic by nature.

okay, so the move back to cali does happen. over the months of her kids coming to visit her in prison susan can see how exhausted the teenagers are and she's p much just like, 'u guys gotta go. get outta this rural heckhole u hate, stop bringing urselves n my bby to this dismal place.' and they don't think she's serious but the next time they come to visit, she doesn't meet them, so. yup. serious it is. billy, max, n baby take neil's life insurance money and head off to cali.

this is a modern au, okay, inmates sneaking smartphones into the prison n all that. so susan makes deals and friends and does favors, and gets some help from the ones who are good at bitcoin and scams and counterfeiting and what have you. this enables her to do discreet online "shopping." so she gets ducky all kinds of rubber ducks, at least a handful of times a year. the ducks get more unique and less childish as ducky grows. susan apologizes almost every time she talks to the older kids on the phone for like, five yrs. max isn't rly angry with how things ended with neil tho, more so has that residual anger that susan ever got together with neil in the first place. billy doesn't rly know what to feel tbh, accepts the apologies p numbly bc he's too damn exhausted with being the primary caregiver in over his head to even think abt how he feels at the end of the day.

susan gets released on good behavior around the same time ducky comes out, announcing she's a girl. it's an adjustment for billy and max to get used to bc they never rly suspected, but they're 100% supportive. susan is...oddly excited? not for selfless reasons (tho she is earnestly supportive) but bc it's like. not only does that mean trashing the masculine deadname neil had adamantly declared for ducky, but it means all in all, she got out at the perfect time bc she gets to be introduced to the authentic version of her child along w errbody else. makes her feel less left behind, like she didn't miss out on errything despite being put away for a decade. susan moves in with all of them, obvi, in a small house by the seaside filled to the brim with rubber ducks (billy and max also contributed to ducky's collection on birthdays and holidays, the first duck billy ever got has skulls, and the first max ever got is a frankenstein monster duck). home is cluttered, awkward, and tentative but free of fear and ripe with *genuine* new beginnings.

Eren’s mouth flipped open during Armins story. What a chatterbox. “I still don’t get why”, the threw in when Armin had ended. “You are perfectly healthy. Everyone here has got something, that’s really fucked up but someone just thought you were a girl. That’s nothing to commit suicide for.”

Eren heard his brother clucking in protest. “We are not in the position to judge someone! Armin is fighting for every day, just like the others in this room. If you want to be part of this group, you’ll have to learn to open up and accept the stories of everyone neutrally!”

Eren quickly blinked over to his brother then he looked at Armin who finally had his face turned away from the wall and returned his glance. His big blue eyes were watery but other than Reiner he was able to hold back the tears.

“Then let's hear your problem”, Armin muttered between clenched teeth.

Eren sighed. Technically he really wasn’t in the mood for this. It had got nothing to do with anyone what was happening in his head. But the stubborn look on that sissy's guy next to him didn’t let go of him and he knew he wouldn’t shut up until he knew what he wanted to.

“I told my doctor that I’ll kill myself before the illness I’ve got get’s so worse I can’t do it on my own anymore. I can be a chatterbox at times, i should probably have shut my mouth once in my life. Now they’ve sent me here, hoping my great big brother will bring some sense back into me. I don’t think it’s gonna work but who knows?” With a smug grin he crossed his arms in front of his chest and gave Armin’s staunch glance right back to him.

Finally it was the blond that ended the staring and looked back between his feet.

“What you’ve got?”, Pieck asked when Eren looked around the circle with no less smug look on his face.

“Huntington”, he said toneless.

Most of them didn’t give him a reaction. He knew what their first query on their smartphones upon leaving this room would be. But Pieck smiled at him pityingly - disgusting.

For a Moment complete silence fell over the room, only the scratching of Zeke's pen on paper was to be heard.

“Good”, he finally said. “Armin was talking to us about his new habit of taking an one hour long walk every day, when we were interrupted. Please, continue telling us. Got some recommendations for nice routes?” Armin didn’t look up. His voice cracked as he started to speak. “I’m always going after university. Usually the same way every time. It totally doesn’t matter where to go, the main point is to move. Listening to music is immensely helpful. I’ve got a playlist for every mood.”

“Oh, your back to university!”, Pieck noted with a huge smile. Eren already had a pretty good image of the person she was, she probably acted as the mom-friend in the group.

Armin nodded and finally looked at her. “Yeah, the summer term started last week.”

Pieck smiled warmly and even Zeke looked pleased. “What Armin said, moving really is the Alpha and Omega. Being active definitely helps pushing away somber thoughts and fresh air helps getting the head empty. Follow Armin’s example, everyone.”

The circle applauded, what Eren thought was absolutely ridiculous and boycotted.

Finally Zeke took a look at his watch and did some other notes on his pad. “Well, time sure flew by today. We weren’t even able to talk about everything I wanted to. But we’ve got a new member around us, what I’m really glad about. I’ll see you all next week, same time, same place.” He placed the clipboard on his thighs and while the other four took their stuff he looked firmly and with contracted eyebrows at Eren. “And please be punctual next time.”

Eren rolled his eyes then he stood up. His glance met Armin who was the first one to leave the room, one hand placed over the lover half of his face. Eren grinned wonky. What a wimp. He still found himself hurrying up, to keep up with him. On the second floor he finally caught up with him. “Hey Armin! Wait a sec’!”

But Armin didn’t slow down and didn’t even look at him. “I have to catch my bus.”

Eren ran after him. “You said it was your third attempt at suicide. Explain it to me, I still don’t get it, you're not lacking anything.”

Armin finally looked at him. His watery eyes were pulled together. “Maybe not physically. But it’s called depression, you insensitive ass.”

Eren was surprised by his fighting back. He continued following Armin as he left the building. “My neurologist always tells me, I also got some. But I don’t believe that. I just wanna kill me before I lose control of my body. Is that so unusual?”

Armin looked at his bottomless. “Pieck could say the same, but she wants to make the best out of her life. Ymir is only still alive because of her girlfriend. Everyone’s dealing differently with a deadly disease.”

“Why did you try it in the first place?”, Eren asked when Armin sat down at the bus stop.

“You’re pretty cligly, aren’t ya?” He laughed with a huff. “When I was eight, I thought about what being dead must be like. My budgie had just died and my mom told me that he had gone to heaven. When I was twelve, the thought about dying still hadn’t left me alone. I took my mom’s lady’s shaver at the tub and cut my wrists. Way not deep enough and the wrong way round, like you can sometimes see it in the movies. When I realized I wouldn’t die from it, I just was full of panic how to explain all the blood to my parents. They sent me to a child psychologist. Since then I didn’t spend a full year without therapy.”

Eren whistled through his teeth. “You’re really quite the gloomy brat, aren’t ya?”

Armin looked at him through narrowed eyes and the tip of his nose had turned red. “You’re feeling really cool, aren’t you?”

Eren grinned back and shrugged.

“There’s my bus. See you next week, Eren Jäger.” Armin stood up and got onto the bus. While walking past the windows, he gave Eren a last bottomless glance, his face in deep reds under his eyes.

Eren scoffed. What a whiny brat. But he liked him.

What are your favorite movies and TV shows outside of SW? I’m looking for new things to watch since SW was so disappointing

My tastes are pretty eclectic, so I will stick to just things that are either similar to sw or are in the reylo-esque romance wheelhouse and have happy endings:

Chuck. It is a goofy, light-hearted action-adventure show with extremely endearing characters and a very prominent central romance (seriously, heavy romance and there is a lot of payoff for it, you will be FED- it's kind of slow burn but also shockingly NOT slow burn, they are deep into it pretty much immediately). The main couple is the classic Stoic Badass gradually softened by an innocent they have to protect who is a liability in battle but full of the Power of Heart. Chuck is The Heart btw. He is of that vanishingly rare male Beauty (of B&tB) type. He's incredibly generous and open, Sarah is prickly and closed-off. It is Quality. Very much a gender-swap of your typical cliche anime couple lol. I would recommend stopping at the mid-season finale in season 4, because it's downhill from there. The beginning of season 3 is very rough, but it's definitely worth it to stay for the back half, imo. There are several great endings to choose from before things go to shit, so we don't need to talk about the finale. Probably the most tonally similar to SW thing possible without being high/space fantasy. More humour, more silly, but definitely has a spiritual kinship. Has the best THE BEST 'secret revealed' scenes I have ever seen in anything. If you're into that and were hoping for that in ep IX, you need to watch Chuck.

The Shop Around the Corner. 1940 romance/drama film. You've Got Mail is a remake of it. Jimmy Stewart being profoundly adorable, Frank Morgan (aka the Wizard of Oz), various amusing side characters, and an absolutely deathless double blind 'secretly in love with the workplace nemesis' plot that can and probably has been a great reylo AU.

Mirromask. Fantasy/coming-of-age film. Touted as a 'spiritual successor' to Labyrinth by the filmmakers (one of whom is Neil Gaiman) and let me tell you, that is extremely apt. Beautiful, magical, laden with symbolism and Mask Discourse, and has a great ship. I quote it regularly.

Speaking of which, I'm sure you've seen Labyrinth? If you haven't seen Labyrinth, drop everything and watch Labyrinth.

Legend (the Ridley Scott director's cut, not the theatrical cut). Sumptuous fairy tale, runs on proper fairy tale logic, stunning to look at and overall captivating. Tim Curry. Tim Curry as a lonely tragic lord of darkness who tries to seduce the heroine and has drippingly overwrought monologues.

Howl's Moving Castle. Fairy tale adventure/romance film. Beautifully animated, has the ending you want.

The Silence of the Lambs. Thriller/drama film. Actual masterpiece. Use it as a gateway drug to read the books and rejoice that Clannibal is canon and it is spectacular. Just SotL and Hannibal, you don't need to read the other two. Stan Clarice Starling and revel in that ending. Most triumphant 'villain'/heroine ship of all time (he is not technically a villain but for shorthand's sake).

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Terry Gilliam 1988 fantasy/adventure film. THE TRIUMPH OF IDEALISM OVER CYNICS I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW HEALING IT WAS TO WATCH AFTER THE TROS BULLSHIT HIT. Jonathan Pryce's spiritual villain is basically Chris Terrio and it is cathartic to see imagination and sentiment conquer him.

Sabrina. 1995 romance film. Modern fairy tale with Harrison Ford. Rejecting what you thought you wanted all your life for the thing you actually need, growing up but still believing in magic, beautiful character development across all the leads. Could be (and is irrc) a fantastic reylo AU.

The Scarlet Pimpernel. 1934 adventure film. High romance, secret identities, play-acting, people who aren't at all what they appear to be, falling in love with your own spouse, Big Heroism, guile and wit and audacity. It makes me do little kicks like a happy baby. This is one of the 3-5 films constantly tied for my favourite film of all time. There is a good quality rip free on youtube. Watch it and fall in love with Leslie Howard (this is possibly my favourite acting performance of all time).

Oh, related note. Pygmalion 1938 or My Fair Lady. (The musical is based on this film and borrows from it heavily, including its much more romantic ending compared to the original play.)

The Mummy. 1999 action/adventure/romance film. Very tonally similar to sw. A fucking great time, A+ characters.

EVER AFTER. 1998 romance film. The flawless and perfect and best ever Cinderella adaptation. This is the most satisfying film in history, maybe, the ending is so good it is amazing it exists. Also, it has Richard O'Brien being slimy. Huge selling point. Grapples with identity and stewardship, is brilliant.

Fruits Basket. drama/romance anime. I haven't watched the new version yet, but it's following the manga so I know the story. The original anime didn't do the whole plot (because they caught up with the source material) but it's wonderful and I still recommend it. The central ship is (spoiler.........) a B&tB type where we eventually discover the main love interest both feels like a figurative monster and turns into a literal monster. He has an incredible speech about his relationship with people's fear, it makes me weep. I called the endgame from the first episode and always thought it was obvious, but there is a red herring love triangle dynamic. It's really not annoying, though, because it is a red herring. (I hate love triangles)

I am Dragon. Russian monster romance film. Beautiful, simple fable with a really great heroine.

Jane Eyre. 1943 Gothic Romance film. It's Jane Eyre, byronic hero x sensible heroine love story with much atmosphere and Gothic drama. I stan this version because I am an Orson Welles fangirl and I'm also not convinced it can be improved upon. Elizabeth Taylor's film debut btw.

Hellboy. 2004 action/adventure/romance film. Defying destiny, reconciling identity, monster romance. The complete package and a great time. Tonally similar to SW and probably thematically closest to it out of this whole list. Don't watch the sequel.

Beauty and the Beast 1987 tv series. Exactly what it says on the tin. Deals with the classic B&tB themes, but in a different way. He's not cursed and will never transform into an ordinary man. The first season is very episodic and 'case of the week', but the second season gets more into character drama. It's dated, but if you give it a chance you can get past some of the cheese factor and it's really a unique experience. Its concerns are SO atypical that it feels like something fandom would make rather than a mainstream network show. It was so massively, insanely popular with women at the time that a record of Vincent (the beast) reading poetry topped the album charts. Also Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. Stop at season two. Point of interest: George RR Martin wrote for this show.

Stargate (the movie not the series) sci-fi fantasy about a nerdy guy who accidentally a hero.

Possession. 2009... mystery/supernatural/romance. Okay. This is a whole thing. Lee Pace and Sarah Michelle Gellar. It's based on a Korean film I've never been able to find for some reason, but being Hollywood they ruined the romanticism and nuance of the original in the theatrical cut to make a shitty punative ending. However. If you buy it on dvd and go to the alternate ending (which follows the original story) with around 20 minutes left (scene after Lee Pace's character wakes from a bad dream-go to deleted scenes and select the alternate ending), you will get a very, very interesting character study/thriller/redemption about sincerity within deception, compassion, and a major question about second chances with a positive answer. It's kind of dark and kind of astonishingly idealistic at the same time. The heroine makes a very powerful choice, twice over. It's fascinating. If you're into the conflicted and uncertain period in reylo, the part where he is most ambiguous, and you wanted more of that and much darker shades to it, you might be really into this. Also, it should be noted, there is a MASSIVE height difference and they show it off. The film is flawed (and the seams show on the Hollywood rewrite) but idk, it's fascinating. Shocking to me that they even got to shoot the original ending. It is pretty balls to the wall with its themes on forgiveness.

I would recommend getting into kdramas because there is a wealth of female-gaze tropey amazing content, but always check the ending before getting invested. My all-time fave is the 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, but it's not sw related at all lmao. It has a happy ending with all the elements you'd want, but it's not satisfying in execution, so that's it's major flaw and I find that pretty common with kdramas. One that is maybe more relevant is My Love from Another Star, which has a hero who is a little bit like Ben in personality. The heroine isn't my favourite, though. It does have a decent ending.

Oh yeah- brain fart. Kurosawa films and classic westerns were both very influential on SW. Or you can combine both and watch The Magnificent Seven.

Hazbin/Helluva are hated for the exact same reason they’re loved:

Before I begin I need to repeat something and that’s that you please, kindly, DO NOT BOTHER ANYONE WORKING ON THE SHOW WITH THIS POST. I don’t care if you’re a fan looking for their opinion or a “critic” looking for their response. THESE PEOPLE ARE WORKING HARD, THIS IS NOT A CALL OUT POST IT’S JUST FAN DRIVEL LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE OKAY?!?!?

Here are the facts of the matter:

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are independently produced cartoons made by a bunch of people juuuuust breaking in on the animation market, and/or internet famous artists having fun with the world they’re producing. The creator, like her style or not, is inspired and VERY passionate about what she likes and what she wants. Everyone working on the show is really into it and their work. It’s such a self-made fandom it was technically a fandom first and a product second. Fans feel like they (and technically do) have a say in how the show should be run and what the characters should be.

It is popular enough to attract attention online but not overblown by the mainstream media.

On the positive side all those things mean:

It’s crew is tight-nit and very passionate + stick up for each other and their projects. It’s basically a giant colab. Whether they were preexisting fans/friends of Viv, the people working on it got to work on something they liked and with people they liked.

The animation community is super pumped and excited for them be they fans of the animators or just people who like cartoons and monsters and stuff. They’re positively skeptical and in on the hype cause they want to see more fluid adult animation and more indie projects take off (also 2D)!

It’s fandom LOVES the characters, concept, and story. They are more invested in what the characters could be rather than what they actually are, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing; to love something based on the concepts presented and use it to make AUs, hypotheticals and what not. Cringe all you want at the Onceler fandom (you can) but it is impressive to make all that material from so little!

They’re both edgy and insensitive based on their subject matter alone. And yet, the creators and fans DO intend for the show to be a net-positive: there IS supposed to a be representational aspect to it’s design and it’s audience. Brandon Rogers, the modern John Waters, is a pure shock-humor artist; an example of the sincere but not TOO serious risque nature these shows should have, and BOTH attract a pretty happy and excitable LGBTQ fanbase who hate bigotry.

The creators directly talking with fans means there’s again a sense of togetherness to the whole production. That the creators tell people to ship what they want BUT NOT TO BULLY is really cool + important.

As an aside, they can only say so much and Viv is at this point not 100% of Hazbin or Helluva’s creation. It’s other people speaking for or with it now. Neither pilot is a singular idea and musing of one person anymore, they are stand alone products and they are not immune from critique or favoritism.

Buuuuuuut, there’s a flipside to these things as well:

Beyond NDAs (as an aside, a lot of productions have these I don’t think it’s amoral that Viv had this) the crew is tight. When they hear how a site that they’ve heard through the grabevine hosted the guy who sent Viv rape porn*, even if the critique is from a user who hates that guy, THEY AREN’T GONNA HEAR THEM OUT. And they shouldn’t. They are tired and don’t want to be involved, at best (or want to move on from past drama) and biased towards Viv, at worst. They stick out for each other in the business and also who are you gonna stan if you were in their shoes? A person you don’t know on a forum you’ve seen post creepy shit OR your friend who paid you, promos you, talks to you and you like to work with?

Ask yourself honestly what you would do if someone said:

“hey I’m from [4chan/Kiwi, ED, Tapatalk, Reddit, ect]. I’m sorry for what happened but just so you know-”

I so get the crew just straight up blocking on sight. I don’t CONDONE it, but in a postGamerGate world I understand it.

AND when it comes to accusations made against the VAs, a producer, or one of the artists, and ESPECIALLY the creator - people are gonna just handwave it away convinced, it’s just whining or has alterier motives + again, friends stick together and choose sides...like Brock Baker’s :B

It’s popular so it’s gonna get love and hate. I know critics are not gonna like to hear the later, but it is true. It feels cathartic to dunk on a property when fans are crazy and you feel it’s overrated/bad. People feel good dunking on this mishandled, problematic clusterfugg cause they know not as many people are watching and unironically liking, say, Alfred Alfer ----- (please don’t look that or Emily Youcis up. Here’s the tvtropes page. Do not look beyond this point PLEASE)

Likewise, the clout surrounding the show is biased and detracted form being too mean as well. Everyone can tell there’s a kind of toxic mess under the covers but no one wants to deep dive or prod the details of something people are working on and liking so much, especially not when the loudest detractors are asshats like P.K. Russel.

A lot of merch has been sold and produced WELL BEFORE the rest of the shows or the finalized series/designs have been laid out. If nothing comes of either show it will be bad having all this merch hyping something that doesn’t exist. If it does but is so radically different than the vision in Viv’s and fan’s heads (these are both PILOTS, I’ll remind you) it’s gonna disappoint. I just know it.

People were writing Hazbin fanfics and AUs before the pilot was dropped and have made sequels to both before we have even a clear picture of what the ending is gonna be. People are in love and writing for a franchise they don’t know. They know the idea of it and the version of it in their head, but they don’t really know it.

The fandom can not take criticism. This is bad. Everyone is a critic and inside every critic is a nerdooo ~ ((critics do have fandoms and everyone will like something problematic for reasons)) Fans want to criticize but they’re scared of being ostracized from the fandom and kicked off of forums/servers, which has happened to two underage fans already. **

The fandom feels entitled to their ideas and to the creators’ attention. If it were any other fandom it is sooper cool that creators allow people to ship as they please, but not one that’s currently still in development and whose finalized characters haven’t been figured out. The babies have been sent into the battle field at only a few months old alongside veteran ship/canon/entitled cartoon fandoms like Steven Universe and Rick and Morty. It’s like the scene from mother! where the crowd dismembers and eats the baby.

Viv and has a serious influence on these people so even when her and a bunch of fans/artists are just gabbing about stupid memes on twitter, this invites a slew of onlookers to attack these people***. Despite the influence you can have or say to stop this behavior, it’s waaaay harder to put a stop to it than just saying “hey guys be nice” (Anyone else remember the inner-drama of Brony fandom? Like chuds would even take the word of the AskMolestiaMod to heart when their one goal was to take down the dreaded Essjaydoublewes that threatened their rape jokes).

Fans also have no boundaries. Sea also; Lincar Rox.

Being a netpositive doesn’t mean everything you say or do is devoid of critique. If you make vulgar/shocking adult content it will have fans and it will have detractors regardless of the positive intent. As I’ve said earlier, the problem with Viv’s works isn’t really the content but the context and the presentation. You can say Angel Dust is an inspiring character all you want. To some people that’s absolutely true but that does NOT absolve the fact that the it’s a cis woman writing and glamorizing an abused crossdressing gay man. People are gonna be offended and the creator needs tougher skin about this be it satire, parody, or drama.

*back when they were fixated on Zoophobia, there was a guy on Bad Webcomics Wiki/Tapatalk for the comic who posted art of Viv’s decapitated head getting raped by Angel Dust as a “joke”. Oh! and he also took the complaints the wiki had and made Viv and ED page. The rest of the forum was not happy but yeah that happened. The forum itself is the same as any reddit thread and NOT a hate site, but yeah um Viv has every right to quit after that, sorry.

The evidence is linked here in this google doc, which is why I linked it. (tbh I sympathize with the author but I don’t think it’s their place to say when Viv should have let the world known about the harassment porn )

y'know what's admirable about Square Enix? they write canon fanfiction. Character time travels to past self? Sure. Weird modern AU where everything's basically the same except the characters can go get a Starbucks anytime they want? Absolutely, make it a crossover. Vs debates? they made an entire game series.

oh yeah, they definitely dont restrict themselves - and time travel has been a staple of the franchise since forever (like, literally, the very first Final Fantasy involves time travel, with it turning out the Big Bad Chaos is actually the first of his minions you defeated, who was so ashamed of his defeat that he ended up displaced back in time and became the very god he answered too - the Dissidia games muddle things even more, as the first two are technically prequels to that for the Warrior of Light from that game, because Dissidia is where he was “created”, and didnt go on to have that first adventure until after, yet Garland, the aforementioned minion of Chaos, comes from during that first adventure) - hell, Final Fantasy X has the plot twist where it turns out the protagonist didnt time travel, and in fact originates from a dream world recreation of a long destroyed city (and X is highly implied to be set in the same universe as VII in the long distant past, with the humanity of X eventually leaving Spira and settling on the Planet of VII, at a point after Jenova had nearly wiped out the native inhabitants and been forced into stasis)

hell, Square Enix seem to love time travel as a concept, one of their most popular old games is Chrono Trigger, which is built around time travel (a character in the Remake is even named after and looks like an aged version of one of the characters from it). another game they put out relatively recently, Bravely Default, didnt involve direct time travel, but did involve the protagonists going to alternate timelines and playing out multiple versions of the same events multiple times

and yeah, this whole thing is effectively officially sanctioned fanfic... by the people who made it the first time (and i dont just mean the company, the original director is now the producer, the writers of the original are still involved, and the current director is Tetsuya Nomura, who was the art director for the original - that distinctive blocky character design is his - and the guy who suggested that Aerith die as part of the plot)

and its not like Final Fantasy has ever not had breakneck twists and turns, this is, if anything, par for the course, nothing is too weird to tell a compelling story (its why Kingdom Hearts works)
