You wanna really put effort into appreciating and helping an artist feel seen and liked, and it feels like that effort is better concentrated on posts that don't already have a ton of notes bc they already have that 1k validation. Yeah, exactly! There are so many incredible creators in this fandom, I would love if as many of them as possible could feel appreciated and valued. It sucks to work hard on something and not feel like it garnered any attention, and I'd just like to make people feel seen in whatever capacity I can

My thought today is that there are a number of things I do that have "bad" origins but have since become things I genuinely enjoy and I sometimes wonder if that has lasting consequences on my mental health. Like, I started showering with the lights off several years ago because I just could not stand seeing my own body. And I think that's a problem, having such a poor perception of your own body that you refuse to even look at it, and I had to work on that a lot. But now that I've done work to have a better relationship with myself, I find I still prefer showering in the dark. And I wonder if that's me still holding onto some facet of this poor self image or if I have successfully divorced the ideas from each other. That's kind of a silly, small example, but to a broader context, how divorced can behaviors even be from the thoughts that established them? What metric could you even use to assess that? How much work do you have to do on yourself before you can know these behaviors are done out of a real love for the activity and not lingering poor thoughts?

Recently,...during Mew's birthday, Chinese fans literally showered him with gifts, to the extent of giving him "Gold Bars". Now,..this literally was a jaw dropping moment for me. Because,...BL as an industry literally exploded during the time of the pandemic, and I believe, the success of "TharnType", and "2gether" can be very much attributed to the pandemic, because almost the whole world was in a lockdown. And prior to the pandemic,...whatever fan-service would happen, it was to a great extent simple, and relatable. But now,...international fans shower so much of gifts on the stars that it's just beyond anyone's imagination. At least for those fans that are genuine and hard-working. Because it's not a question of whether fans can afford or not, it's a question of spending your hard-earned money on an already well-established, and filthy rich celebrity.

The same happened with Ohm Pawat's birthday celebration too,...where a fan gifted him an Air-con because he jokingly tweeted something like his AC being too old and not working properly.

What is your opinion on such kind of gift showering by uber-rich fans, given that these actors are already minting tons of money not just by doing BLs, but through brand endorsements, variety shows, top-spender events, etc,...etc,...etc???

Oh man this kinda thing makes me so uncomfortable.

First it should be said that most of the Thai BL actors actually don't seem to make much money. The major ones with endorsement deals excepted, of course.

But putting that aside, celebrity tribute is something I'm unfortunately all too familiar with.

From the fan side

I get the instinct.

Fans want to give back to someone who brought them pleasure. They want to be remembered and mean something significant to the object of their admiration. Sometimes, they want to share a thing they love and display their knowledge:

“I know you like coffee, this is MY favorite coffee. I want you to like it too, so that we like the same thing. Now we have a connection.”

This is the same psychological need for direct social linking to authority/admiration figures (we are learning) that drives sasang behavior.

“I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED. I WANT TO BE SEEN AND NOTICED.”

Perhaps with Bl actors there's even some sexual fantasy guilt going on...

Personally? It makes me VERY uncomfortable.

From the celebrity side? I’m sorry but 9/10 they really don’t want it.

TRIBUTE

Most of them get very careful about not mentioning the things they love/want/need by name to avoid unwanted gifts.

Amusing aside, an ex (and still dear friend) of mine and a rather big name writer is always joking about the fact that they should write more about how great BMWs are, just to see what happens.

But honestly? If they’re traveling, the celebrity has to figure out how to transport their loot home. It’s probubly not to their taste. If it’s handmade or crafted they feel guilty getting rid of it. If it’s food related they’re probubly on a diet or it’s too dangerous and risky to ingest.

It’s a waste of money.

A wealthy fan is far better off supporting a celebrity by buying the brand that celebrity is endorsing, then saying how much they love that thing (whatever it is) and tagging both the brand and the celebrity in a post. That’s social proof for everyone concerned. It’s the equivalent of leaving a great review for a book or movie.

ASIDE: if you are a fan of a creator, shill their shit. Like that artist? Talk about how great they are. Share their site/books/photos/music (appropriately attributed and tagged, of course). Buy prints, gift their books, support them by supporting their work. Most purchases of goods are still driven by word of mouth.

VIP EVENTS

Top spender (VIP) fan events, those are probubly better for everyone concerned. I don’t mind them. It’s like, I don’t know, those weird fundraiser dinners politicians have. Probubly really awkward, but these are actors and extraverts, they should handle mini performances okay.

It’s literally the uber fan paying for access (paying for the celebrity’s time) and that’s a value for value proposition. I wouldn’t want to attend one. But then I dread the idea of attending concerts of bands I LOVE. There’s actually no celebrity in the world I would pay to access. Period.

But I don’t really object to these. I think of them as a little like very small conferences or conventions (built on the same model).

VARIETY SHOWS

Variety shows are for publicity. They’re just another kind of press junket.

I don’t like it when they force BL actors to do stupid games that tease homoerotic contact and come off as lascivious and predatory. They make everyone concerned (including me) uncomfortable. And with most of the pairs you can tell by the body language they find it unpleasant.

I don’t watch them if I can avoid it.

You want to know what I really want instead of celebrity tribute?

I want every major celebrity to have a short list of charities that they endorse. And if a wealthy fan wants to make a gift to that charity in that celebrity’s name, that’s what they can do.

If they want extra credit and attention for it, they can bring a certificate or something to be signed at VIP events. If the celebrity is moved but the amount or something, they could do a shout out in their next Live.

You want to support BL?

Join the streaming platforms that host the shows. Pay to play. LEGALLY. (If you have to pick one, GaGaOOLaLa is objectively and politics wise, the best. It’s queer. It’s based out of Taiwan.)

Pay subscribe to those BL YouTube channels (like Strongberry) who offer VIP content.

Back BL projects that are trying to get off the ground via kickstarter or gofundme or otherwise.

Tip or pay the subbers who are working to translate forgotten or lesser known BLs that gets no attention any other way.

Buy/support the original content that you want to see adapted (or has been adapted). By that I mean the yaoi mangas/manwha, webtoons, and y-novels. The studios need stuff to work from, the best BLs are always adaptations. We MUST support the writers, they are the beginning.

Don’t have any money to burn?

Subscribe to the BL YouTube channels that offer content. SUBSCRIBE TO THEM. Press the fucking button. What else are you doing with your life?

Follow the production side: if they are on social media follow the producers, writers, and directors. Tell them how much you love and appreciate them. Give them your support. Comment on their IG posts. Retweet their thoughts. They are the ones that really need it. Trust me.

Talk about the shows you love and spread the word to anyone who might be intersted. Explain WHY you love them. Learn to identify that why in yourself so you can articulate it better and suck in more fans.

Why you should watch everything, everywhere all at once

So I watched everything everywhere all at once and it was pretty fucking cool. Here are my thoughts.

Aka half genuine review half unhinged review brought to you by yours truly.

And raid shadow legends.

1. It’s a genuine cinematic masterpiece.

As if it wasn’t obvious enough already: I like this movie. A lot. I do not say this lightly. Yes I know what you are going to say. That you’ve heard this before, and that you’re tired of this phrase being used a billion times on tons of movies, many of which, are frankly streaming hot garbage. But trust when I say that this movie is not. It’s a genuine masterpiece of art, of storytelling, of well done character arcs and development, and is stunning from both a visual and artistic standpoint. You can tell that the creators poured their very heart and soul into this film and it really shows. It was created by truly passionate people who genuinely wanted to make something different, and it is. In fact, I believe theres nothing quite exactly like it. It’s honestly so good I can’t quite put it into words.

2. The acting is incredible

This movie and its characters are the centerpiece of this gorgeous work of art. The characters are lovable and you feel connected to them, no thanks to the incredible actors behind them. Michelle Yo is fantastic, but the one that really stole the show for me was Ke Huy Quan’s performance as Waymond. He manages to have such a charming and wholesome persona but he can switch on a dime to become serious and really hammer home the performance. He is absolutely incredible and is just such an underrated and talented actor and god damn this man is a gem and I love him please and thank you and goodnight New York.

3. Gay people

I needn’t elaborate this is tumblr and I know who you fucks are.

Oh and did I mention the costume designs???

Absolutely iconic.

And the score?? Gorgeous.

Every time I listen to it I feel something. It’s just so vivid and colorful and alive.

4. It’s something new and refreshing

I won’t lie when I say that this movie is a little unorthodox. Which one may expect from a movie that deals with parallel universes, talking rocks, people who evolved with hot dogs for fingers, an extended ratatouille metaphor, talking piñatas, a literal everything bagel void, and more. It’s a strange movie in hindsight, but thats also part of its charm. The film has a kind of weird core aesthetic that may seem strange at first, but the deeper you go into it, the more you see its heart. And all of the crazy, wacky strange ideas all cone together in one culminating final act. And it’s absolutely beautiful. There are brief glimpses, minor interludes of this film that create such a strong feeling of motion, of color, and an overwhelming sense of euphoric bliss and a pure celebration of life that is almost indescribable with words. It’s something that has stuck with me long after I finished it, and something I won’t be able to ever forget.

Also it’s pretty god damn funny. I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did man it had moments that were very funny. But it was equally balanced in its seriousness. It’s quite the contemplative film. This movie makes you really think about some pretty deep shit and I think thats cool as fuck and more people should be talking about it because it’s criminally underrated and a true masterpiece.

My Webtoon Recommendations

These are webtoons that are all 10/10 for me. Of course it doesn’t have to be a 10/10 for you, so just a reminder, do not attack me for liking a webtoon that you do not. These are my opinions and we are not going to have the exact same taste. Please be respectful.

Your Throne

Genre: Fantasy

Chapters: 75

Status: Ongoing

“Tensions are brewing under the seemingly calm surface of the Vasilios Empire, a kingdom ruled by the Imperial Family and the Temple. Lady Medea Solon has lost her place next to Crown Prince Eros, but resolves to win back whats rightfully hers. Will she reclaim her throne?”

You know whats amazing about this webtoon? The summary leads you to think that what shes winning back is the prince. Wrong. Shes trying to win back the throne. I love how this webtoon doesn’t try to make it a girl focusing her goals on a man, but on power. Medea is such a strong and well written character that you can’t help but love her.

The second protagonist Pschye, who of which is the person who took Medeas place as Crown Princess, is the complete opposite of Medea. At the beginning you hate her, but as the webtoon goes on and Medea and her get a better understanding of eachother due to them switching bodies as a wish from God, you begin to root for them as they team up to take over the throne from the Crown Prince.

The art is so beautiful and I constantly found myself at awe from the amount of detail put into it.

The Makeup Remover

Genre: Romace

Chapters: 78

Status: Ongoing

“After years of being told to focus on studying, Yeseul feels lost when she starts college and is suddenly expected to pay attention to makeup. When a chance encounter with brilliant makeup artist Yuseong leads to her taking part in a televised makeup competition, Yeseul begins to question the role that makeup and appearance play in society.”

This was created by one of my favorite webtoon creators Lee Yone. Their art is just so amazing and their stories always include such good topics.

For instance, The Makeup Remover’s theme is loving yourself for who you are. It shows how people treat you based on your looks and as someone whos struggled with that kind of thing for a while, this webtoon really touched me. The main character Yeseul is such a relatable character, even when trying to reject beauty standards, she still came subject to the pressures of living up to the people around her. She struggles with trying to love her own appearance and I really like that this webtoon didn’t try to be like, ‘fuck the beauty standard im better than that screw pretty people!!!’ it actually showed realistically how people struggle with self-image. I also love the main love interest because oh my god, we need more men like him please. He doesn’t care about Yeseul’s appearance and genuinely loves her for her personality.

Also, art is amazing. The author is so talented and you should support them by reading and liking the chapters.

Surviving Romance

Genre: Horror

Chapters: 14

Status: Ongoing

“When Chaerin Eun becomes the protagonist of the romance novel she is reading, she expects a fairytale ending with the novel’s love interest, Jeha. But when a bizarre twist makes her realize the story is not playing out as it does in the book, she’ll need the help of an unlikely character from her class to defy the new storyline and find her happy ending - if only she can figure out who this ‘Unknown Extra’ is first!”

Hands down one of my favorite webtoons by a long shot. You ever see a webtoon and think, ‘oh yeah, thats going to be a good webtoon’? Thats how this webtoon was for me. It was so good that I spent hours searching for other chapters that hadn’t been uploaded to webtoon yet on other manhua websites. I discovered it because it was also by the author of ‘The Makeup Remover’.

If there is one thing you need to know about me, its that I am a huge horror fan. So when I saw that my favorite author on webtoon had a horror themed webtoon out? You bet your behind that I binged it. Let me tell you, best choice ever.

Think of it as if ‘Ino’s Law’ and ‘Quarantine’ were combined with amazing art and a badass MC.

The Remarried Empress

I love how it is set up to the point where she cannot ‘quit’ until she completes the novel. Creating scenarios where she must survive while meeting the standards in the book. It is such an amazingly written webtoon and I cannot wait for more chapters to be released.

Am I in love with Navier? Yes.

I absolutely adore how this story was set up. The first chapter begins with the big divorce scene, followed by Navier saying that she was going to be remarrying someone else since he wants to divorce her. This sets up a picture that gets completely shattered as you read the chapters. How everything falls into place with the reason behind the divorce and the remarriage is just so well written. The art is so good and and everything is just so insanely well done.

I absolutely love Naviers character, from her regalness and devoted loyalty to her role as empress, all the way to her petty moments and times of sadness. She is truly a character that you want the best for, and I cannot image anyone not liking her. Also the story is just so capable of making you feel emotions. I’ve laughed, cried, and got angry during the course of reading this webtoon. I love how betrayed I felt when the emperor brought home his mistress. It felt like I was in Navier’s shoes!

This is such a well done webtoon and I'm so excited for Navier to get all of the good things she deserves in her new Kingdom and with her new husband.

Witch Creek Road

Genre: Horror

Chapters: 74

Status: Ongoing

“A survival horror about love, acceptance, death, and revenge. And sexy flesh-eating demons. Yeah, it has those, too.”

This series seriously mind fucked me. The way that this story is set up, you don’t see the full picture until the later chapters. Season two literally blew my mind. It is also very gorey so keep that in mind if you don’t like that kind of stuff, but for me that makes it all the better. It is just so wild and crass that you can feel your heart pumping in anticipation.

They even have their own website that goes further into the lore because it’s just so wild. Also the art style is just so amazing, because it complements the story and horror theme so much. You hate most of the characters because they suck, and it is so satisfying when they are killed. Also it has it’s sad moments but I think it is a nice break from the horror so it isn’t so overwhelmingly scary.

I binged this series and I recommend reading only a few chapters a day so you don’t overload your brain.

Other then that, an amazing webtoon. Seriously, go read it, support the author, so much work goes into the story and art that it’s insane.

Dating With A Tail

Genre: Romance

Oh my gosh this is just such a good webtoon. It has amazing art, story telling, and characters. The true love interest was there the whole time, the villain isn’t who you’d expect it to be, and the spirit who cursed her is just! Im not going to spoil it but go read this webtoon!! It is so good and deserves more love.

Also Yunha is just so relatable?? Like she put off finding the woodcutter (her fated love) for 29 years and waited last minute to find him. Homegirl is me trying to do a project for school. Also to get rid of the scent that makes men attracted to her, she just starts eating a ton of garlic and that is just so funny to me.

Also I would go to church for the priest anytime if you know what i mean ;)

Omniscient Reader

Genre: Action

Chapters: 53

“Dokja was an average office worker whose sole interest was reading his favorite web novel ‘Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse.’ But when the novel suddenly becomes reality, he is the only person who knows how the world will end. Armed with this realization, Dokja uses his understanding to change the course of the story, and the world, as he knows it.”

I cannot get over how high quality this story is. The world building is phenomenal, the art is fantastic, and the characters are very fleshed out. This deserved all the hype it has gotten so far and more.

I love the ‘mc thrown into a different reality’ trope so much. Just like with surviving romance, Dokja’s world became the story he was reading. Also a very cool aspect of the story is the level up and the fact that its like a game. Earth has turned into this show for god like creatures to watch and it follows Dokja trying to survive. I also really like that TWSA has a protagonist, but Omniscient Reader’s protagonist is not the protagonist that was in TWSA. There is just so much lore and I’ll say it again, the world building is just phenomenal.

The Ddokkaebi’s and Dokja’s interactions are also just some of my favorite moments from the story so far. And oh my goodness I would die for Lee Gilyoung. Thats it, thats the tweet. That little boy could probably kill me with his giant praying mantis and I would let him if it would make him happy.

Not So Shoujo Love Story

Genre: Comedy

Chapters: 45

Status: Ongoing

“Romance super-fan Rei Chan is ready for her first boyfriend and she knows just who it’ll be: the most handsome boy in school, Hansum Ochinchin. But her plans for the perfect story are derailed when the most popular girl in class declares herself a rival… for Rei’s heart?! This is the year her not so shoujo love story begins!”

This is just such a cute webtoon. The style is very appealing and while the humor can be childish and weird sometimes, it still has made me laugh a lot. I know the humors not for everyone but just keep in mind that it does get better as the story progresses and gets more serious.

Also its a gl! I’m really unable to find good gls these days that don’t fetishize wlw relationships. Rei being painted as a mean trouble maker whos just misunderstood and Hana being the ‘perfect girl’ who only wants Rei’s attention is such a cute dynamic. They balance each other out and better each other. Also stan Rei for constantly sticking up for Hana even if she doesn’t necessarily like her in the beginning, she has very good morals and sticks to them.

Also the defying stereotypes in this webtoon? Just god-tier. Really makes you think twice when you judge someone just on first impressions alone.

Odd Girl Out

Genre: Drama

Chapters: 264

Status: Ongoing

“After a successful winter break makeover, Nari is finally ready for her high school debut. But somehow, she ends up friends with the three prettiest girls in school! Follow Nari as she tries to navigate her brand new high school life surrounded by beauties.”

This story has made me cry multiple times. A lot, even. It is just such a beautiful tale of friendship and finding support in people who are unlike those around theme. It also tells a great story about how anybody can be the ‘odd girl out’. Be it the fat girl, the beautiful girl, the rich girl, or the laid back girl.

It goes so deep into its characters that you even feel bad for the minor antagonists. It really makes you feel for the characters and the reasons behind their actions. Also I know its long, believe me I binged all 260 chapters in the span of three days, but oh my god it is worth it. Also I know the art is kind of off-putting, in fact that’s kind of why I put off reading the story, but I’ve honestly grown to love it and the writing is so good that the art could be literal stick figures and it wouldn’t matter.

The story is amazing and also I just love Nari. She’s just the best.

Gremoryland

Genre: Horror

Chapters: 67

Status: Completed

“Six old school friends are invited to be the first visitors of GremoryLand, a new horror theme park that promises an experience as unique as it is spooky. But once this experience starts there is no turning back, and they find themselves tested beyond what they imagines, facing their most desperate fears in order to survive.”

This is definitely one of those stories were you kind of need to turn of your brain and choose to ignore ‘plot holes’ while reading the early chapters because this story definitely gets crazy if you don’t know the ending. Believe me if you stick with it it will all make sense and the satisfaction you get from finding the ending is just so worth it.

The story is so good, and who Gremory is you would literally never suspect. When it was revealed who Gremory was and how he was able to create Gremoryland is so fucking mind boggling that you would never guess. I had to do a double take. It wasn’t like one of those random characters with a vendetta type of twists, but like one you can pick out from clues throughout the story.

Its so good and twisted and just so worth at least giving it a chance.

These were some of my favorite webtoons on the app! Of course it’s not all of them because unfortunately there is a 10 image limit. I also made this because I’ve run out of new webtoons to read and would love if you guys commented some of your own recs. I can also do a part two with other ones I liked if y’all want more recommendations. You guys can even request specific categories like Drama or Sci-Fi and I can tell you my favorite ones from that genre.

Hi Bee! I know you have strong opinions about copyright so thought I'd drop a line. I've seen wisdom floating around discouraging anyone from posting payment info on their ao3s and have seen adherence to that but there are a ton of fic writers who have commission rates and Kofi links on their Twitter and now I'm seeing more and more "Zines" pop up where select artists and writers contribute and get a cut of the profits. Then it goes back to that whole bit about fanart being fair use but not fic, etc. There seems to be this mentality of let's protect ao3 but still make roundabout profit from fics and I'm sure you're opposed to it, it just kind of sucks to be left out of the loop because of copyright hangups that no one else seems to have. Penny for your thoughts?

I mean, it’s not “wisdom floating around” really. Very straightforwardly, you are never meant to profit off fic. The fact that people do doesn’t make that any less true. I suppose I can see why people who only joined fandom the past few years would see that and be disgruntled about keeping to their morals about it, but I grew up on the cusp of these things where only, like, Cassandra Clare was grubbing for laptops for fic. And that was a Shady AF Thing. So for one, that’s just engrained in my fandom experience. Fic = no money ever. And even with that shifting now as accessibility to pay content creators grows? No. Genuinely, no. Because I never ever EVER want to feel beholden to have to provide fic content. My relationship with fandom and fic can ONLY continue if I get to write on my own whims and schedules, because otherwise I completely implode under the pressure. Money gives ONLY pressure to me. So even though I’m sure I could make money a) I’m obviously really against that for moral reasons b) I would never actually function well under that type of thing.

Hello dear anon! And welcome to the fandom!

Oof. That’s a question. xD

I’m going to try and stay as uh. neutral as possible. Because I’ve already written the post I know I failed but, the intent in answering this is also not to start a feud or hurt anyone’s feelings.

Okay, so I got fairly negative in this chilis tonight, so I want to start by saying that even in light of the opinions I’m about to express, Black Sails is one of, if not my number one, favorite TV shows of all time. Certainly in recent memory - I’ve been hyperfixating on this show for 18 months with no sign of stopping, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for everyone who worked on the show - even Steinberg. (The one exclusion is Michael Bay, he can go twist.)

AND I think Stienberg is an incredibly talented writer. Black Sails is one of my favorite shows because it does such a wonderful job of weaving stories, creating characters, and melding things in a way that is both unexpected and makes sense narratively. I have changed as a person because of the show, and they will have to pry James McGraw and Thomas Hamilton from my cold dead knives-attached-to-them hands. None of what I’m going to say is meant to detract from that.

I will also say that a lot of these issues are not particular to Steinberg and are in fact a systemic problem with American TV + Film. And I’m not leaving Robert Levine out of my criticism, it’s just that Steinberg had the biggest hand in the pot(he wrote a full half the episodes) and a lot of what I’ve heard as far as talking about the show comes from Steinberg. So, he gets the brunt. But it isn’t that I think Steinberg was the only problematic element of the show.

Also, these are all my opinions and are colored by how I interact with my fandoms. I am not only a fandom veteran, but I work and pretty much live in the entertainment industry. I work in indie film and theatre and am surrounded by artists and creators of all walks of life, like, constantly. I know what is possible, and when I see something that can be improved, I want to note it because it is important to me to always be striving forward. Like Miranda says about Thomas, this isn’t out of malice, or out of hate. It’s because I genuinely love this show, and I love entertainment as a whole, and I think in order to get to a better, more inclusive industry we have to have hard conversations and look critically at the media we consume, and it is frustrating to me to time and again see the same faces in the room.

But if that isn’t your cuppa, that’s fine! Fandom isn’t meant to be stressful and if all you want to do is watch a show about gay pirates that is your tomato and I applaud you. Have at it you funky motherfucker.

OH! One more. At some point I’m going to talk about Silverflint. When I do, it is NOT meant as a ‘you shouldn’t/cant ship this’ or ‘this pairing is bad’ or any negative attack on the people who ship that pairing. My criticisms in this post are exclusively about what it means for Steinberg as a writer and Black Sails’ representation of gay and mlm men. While it’s not my cuppa, this is a sail your own ship blog.

OKAY! SO!

My main criticisms of Steinberg & Co boil down to:

The homozygosity of the writers and directors shows a complete lack of desire to include marginalized people in the writing of a show that is about them. Which leads to:

The centering of white men while choosing a historical setting and time period that was in fact dominated by people of color and specifically a black woman,

The gratuitous inclusion of violence against women, particularly sexual violence, and again, that the female characters are often sidelined for the central male characters.

SO.

Black Sails is a show centered around queer, female, and black leads, and yet there were only two non white-male directors (one bi-racial man and one white woman) and only 7 female writers - one of whom was Latina. The entire rest of the major creative staff was white men. I’m not going to comment on sexualities but none of the writers or directors are out as queer according to a quick google search.

Let me reiterate the important bit there.

In Black Sails, where the last two seasons specifically feature around a real, actually-happened-in-history event that shaped black history in the Caribbean, there was not a single black writer on the entire show.

This is the main difference between inclusion for inclusion’s sake, and actually centering marginalized voices. Black Sails has a ton of gay, POC, and female rep in front of the camera but practically zero representation behind it, which leads to storylines and implications that Steinberg and his writers, as white men, simply would never realize.

It’s like why Silver and Miranda never realized the true reasons James was waging war on England. They just did not have the life experiences to realize they were missing a piece of the puzzle, and so they filled in their own without even realizing they’d done so.

Because no one in the room of Black Sails was a part of these marginalized identities, nuances get lost or mistranslated, motivations get muddled through a white man’s gaze(or a straight person’s) and implications that someone within those communities might think is obvious won’t even come up.

And again, because there were no writers or directors of color in the last two seasons (the biracial man directed episodes 2x02 and 2x04 - WHICH MAKES SENSE IMO) the entirety of the historical lore that the show bases itself on in its latter half is filtered through a white man’s lens. And so there is no discussion of how changing something changes the meaning, how leaving someone out or changing their role to be more minor might affect people for whom that is their heritage. How the entire story they’re telling might change with one simple exclusion or addition.

So, how does this relate directly to Steinberg, you ask? Well, simply, because it was his show.

Steinberg(and Levine) were involved in every major decision about the show, from its conception, to the script, to choosing the writers and directors. They chose how they wanted the show to look, to think, what stories to tell and how they wanted to tell them. Their decisions(and the biases that formed those decisions) are woven into the show.

And look. I don’t for a second believe any of this was willful or malicious. I don’t think that John Steinberg and Robert Levine sat down one day and said ‘you know what would make the gays really angry? If we locked the only two canonically gay men up in a prison camp.’

But the decisions that were made in the show were based in ignorance in a way that shows more than just simple negligence or laziness(especially given the attention to detail in everything else). The things they leave out or change in the Maroon War plotline for instance are not small details easily missed. They are big, giant waving flags. They are things that are irreplaceable to still have the same events and stories and tell them respectfully.

It shows an insane amount of privilege to, for instance, write a show airing during a time when the Black Lives Matter movement was at the forefront of the American conscience, include black characters and black storylines, and yet not include a single black voice on their creative team.

In a show that centers a gay man’s love and his journey in attempting to process the horrible things done to him and his lover because of it, we are given just forty minutes of the entire show dedicated to their relationship - and just fifteen of those minutes actually feature the lover!

(Relatedly, the entirety of the gay romantic rep is two kisses, and a forehead touch. That’s the entirety of your gay intimacy representation. And yet there are in the first two seasons alone - because that’s all I’ve clocked so far - something like twenty seven minutes of scenes involving a naked or half naked woman. Five minutes of that is explicitly wlw sex.

Again, I just want to reiterate this because it’s important in recognizing bias.

There is fully twice as much female nudity in the first two seasons, as the entirety of the time the two gay characters have together on screen. )

Steinberg is a perfect example of how a lack of understanding why the diversity you are representing is important, matters. I dislike Steinberg because he, just like every other straight white cis man I have known, profited off of marginalized voices without including them or creating with them in mind.

Art does not exist in a vacuum. You cannot create something - especially something as back breakingly, intensely a labor of love as Black Sails - without putting several pieces of yourself into it. But those pieces color your narrative. They will expose things about you that you don’t even realize. And it’s in these places we are weakest, and why a diverse group of writers with a diverse group of experiences can help a piece be stronger. But for whatever reason, John Steinberg thought that he could make art with only people who looked and thought and experienced like him.

The lack of representation behind the camera in Black Sails was evident in front of it and yet Steinberg is out here getting to pretend like he created the most inclusive groundbreaking show that ever existed. It is important to me, personally, to acknowledge that. And that it kind of makes my skin crawl in the way all media made by straight white (cis)men makes my skin crawl. I wish I didn’t have to feel that way about my favorite tv show just because it was created by a man of privilege, but here we are.

SO. I hope that helped? Feel free to take what you want and leave what you don’t!

SURPRISE!

The Maroons and the Maroon War

So the first thing I want to point out is that the Maroon War was a real thing that happened. It lasted ten years, and resulted in the most substantial victory the Maroons ever achieved against the British. Not only that, there was in fact a KICKIN’ badass female leader of the maroons named Queen Nanny, who is to this day honored as a national hero in Jamaica. While they weren’t able to drive the British out, the outcome of this war led to a mostly self-governing Maroon population in Jamaica from the mid 1700s on. This was a long term fight that had a very tangible and real outcome, even if it didn’t end in the destruction of colonialism.

And what is this war turned into in Black Sails? A white ‘madman’s revenge’ that is doomed to failure after six months.

That, my dear pirates, is a problem for me. (And those familiar with my brand of spiceyness know that I do not ascribe to the ‘Flint is a Madman’ trope, but that IS what Steinberg ascribes to, what he seems to have written the show thinking.)

There was no narrative reason to include the Maroon War in the narrative of Black Sails. The Maroon War didn’t happen until a decade after the Golden Age of Piracy, and aside from Silver’s wife being a black woman there is no mention of Silver ever having contact with them. To me, this feels like the choice of a showrunner who found a cool historical event and saw a chance to up the stakes of their white male heroes while getting in some sweet sweet POC rep.

Except that they then took the major events of the Maroon War and gave them to their white characters, Flint and Silver.

Here’s the thing. If you’re going to take a piece of culturally important history and use it for your show, you NEED to have sensitivity writers. You need to have people who are at least familiar with those events and who care about them to do them justice. Have an expert come in and read your script or go over your ideas. Or just like. Hire a black writer. Hire ONE black writer. As a treat.

The important Maroon figures, Nanny, Cudjoe, and Quao, all get sidelined or ‘sexified’ and then used as plot points for the white characters. Nanny gets split into two women - the older mother queen and Madi, the young naive warbent visionary. Quao(Mr. Scott is the closest, or Kofi possibly) gets killed off because the writers realized they didn’t exactly have a place for him in their writing. Cudjoe(Julius) gets a few scenes and one good speech but his entire role in the war gets given to Silver. And THEN. That sexy Queen Madi figure gets used as emotional bait for Silver and then has to learn he has betrayed her and destroyed the hope and freedom she had wanted to bring to her people.

Gross, pirates. Gross.

Anne Bonny/Max/Mary Read - a heads up, this section includes a semi in-depth discussion of both Max and Anne’s sexual assaults. If that bothers you, the paragraphs talking about that begin with a ***

COOL NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT LESBIANS. Words my 20 year old self would never have imagined coming out of my mouth.

Specifically, I want to talk about Max, and Anne, and their backstories both involving extreme sexual trauma at the hands of men. And then Mary Read and the once again sexification of female characters.

(Actually while I’m here another criticism I have of Steinberg is that his writing does not seem to recognize how queer people existed in the past - again, likely because he didn’t have any gay historians to be like ‘actually buddy that doesn’t make sense also why is Anne not dressing as a man? If you want to fuck with anything and insert modern day terminology and ideas into this show, make her non binary and REALLY piss off the hetties.’)

(This same ficitonal gay dramaturg who is definitely not me has also questioned John Steinberg repeatedly about where Mary Read is, unsatisfied with the answer ‘well we wanted her to be hot so we made her a sex worker and then had Anne have to rescue her but then we realized it would be weird not to include her actual character so we gave her a five second cameo at the very end of the series and also made her like 13.’)

Anyway! So my main point in bringing up Anne and Max is the sexual trauma they are exposed to in the show, particularly being that they are the two primary wlw in the show, who Steinberg has said he views as being completely gay, and what THAT whole unexamined idea looks like.

***Max. My dear Max. There was literally no reason to have her be repeatedly r*ped(and for the love of god there was even less reason to make it that gratuitous and graphic). Max being assaulted like that did not add anything to the gravity of Eleanor’s betrayal. The traumatic event was being tossed aside by Eleanor, and that could have been just as emotionally damaging without the sexual assault. And the only reason for her to be continually assaulted was to bring her and Anne together.

***The reason imo that Max’s r*pe plot was added was because it was the only thing these white straight men could come up with that felt emotionally damaging enough to them. The act of betrayal itself wasn’t enough, the act of being thrown away, of having a lover put your life in danger because of her own ambitions wasn’t enough, they needed her to be r*ped to really drive home the point.

***Anne, on the other hand, is never shown being sexually abused, but we are given an explicit account of her own traumatic history and how Jack saved her from this vile beast who was passing her around to his friends.

But here’s the thing pirates - that never happened. According to every account we have of Anne Bonny, she chose her husband, and married him against her father’s wishes. They were probably relatively happy until her husband started being a pirate spy and Anne started cheating on him with Jack.

And yes, when they were found out. Her husband had her beat. That’s not fucking cool, and if they really wanted to go the damsel in distress route they still could have had Jack ‘save’ her from that. But at no point was she sexually abused by her husband(at least not in any accounts I’ve read.)

You know who did likely sexually abuse her or at least manipulate her and Mary for his own benefit? If you guessed our Rat man Jack Rackham, you would be correct, because when he found out about Mary and Anne’s (supposed, but probably real) relationship, it’s implied he extorted both of them into fucking him to keep their secret from the crew.

The addition of sexual abuse to Anne’s past isn’t done to be true to her character and was in fact explicitly untrue. Now of course I don’t know the reasons why they chose to do this, but I can guess. Just as with Max, the most traumatic thing a male writer can think of for a female character is for them to be sexually abused.

And the most disturbing part of this to me? The parallels it has to the real world of why straight men think lesbians exist. These characters who would be called man haters in present day are given these incredibly traumatic man-centered histories. It brings up something very uncomfortable in me about particularly wlw sexuality being viewed as a reaction to trauma at the hands of men. It’s just gross, I dont like it, and honestly there is no fucking excuse for it besides a room full of white straight men writing this bullshit. A room that Steinberg chose, because they fit his ideas.

In Fact heck, the women of Black Sails in general

***I honestly struggle to think of a single female character who I think was treated fairly in Black Sails. Miranda and Eleanor are killed for taking sides and not understanding their partners, Madi is betrayed in the worst way possible, Max is given a pseudo empowering ending but has that fucking terrible start. Idelle ends off fairly well, but tied to a man she may or may not have any actual feelings for, in what is essentially a political marriage. And Anne has her entire identity tied to a man who will be dead in two years as she is robbed of any agency whatsoever without him. (Oh, and the whole r*pe thing. And also her support for Max’s r*pe or death until she started having fee-fees. Who wrote this stuff. >_>)

Even though the characterization of each and every one of these women is PHENOMENAL - and again I will repeat that I absolutely LOVE these characters as they exist in a vacuum. I think they are well rounded, real, feeling people given motivations and drives and FEELINGS and they SHOW THEIR ANGER and i LOVE THEM.

But the show punishes them for it. Miranda is essentially fridged to move Flint’s storyline along, and to make room for Silver. Eleanor is killed for the emotional damage it will cause Rogers. Madi is placed at the center of a conflict she explicitly says she is willing to die for and then not only is her entire cause taken from her, but when she tells Silver to fuck off he - in possibly the most predictable white man move ever - says ‘no i will stay until you change your mind. I will never leave you. I don’t care about your choice in this matter, I will wait forever for you. I’m your biggest fan. I’ll follow you until you love me. papa, - paparazzi.’

And I touched on this before, but I want to talk in more detail about what is possibly my hottest take to date, the sexification of Mary Read and Queen Nanny, as they are presented in the show.

Max is to Anne what Mary Read is, historically. She is the lover that Jack Rackham discovers with Anne, and then he joins them in their bed. They form a triumvirate that upholds Jack at the expense of the women. But for some reason, Steinberg didn’t want to just include Mary Read as an actual character. For some reason he needed to make Anne’s love interest a sex worker who was in need of saving (and who, coincidentally, we never see working the brothel after she becomes lovers with Anne, because she is now a madam. :) Gross.)

And Madi. My dear sweet fucking Madi who didn’t fucking deserve any of this bullshit send tweet.

So, historically, Queen Nanny was the Queen, spiritual advisor, and the military tactician of the Windward Maroons. She would have filled both Madi and the Queen’s character roles(and Flint’s, but who’s counting. A BLACK GAY LEAD? Inconceivable. I digress.) But, I guess, because they were wishy-washing with Silver’s sexuality or felt they needed to give him a female love interest because of Treasure Island, or because they were leaning a bit too hard into the gay shit and needed to backpedal, they took Queen Nanny and split her into a character who is for all intents and purposes powerless in the war and Madi, who is young and naive and does not have any real world experience outside of the Maroon camp.

Because that’s sexy, or something. They could have had the Maroon Queen be a fucking badass lady who works and fights alongside Flint and Silver and one ups them and teaches them shit and has her own ideas about where the British can stick it, but instead they made her into the perfect caricature of a female monarch, letting the big strong men handle the dirty work or something. Because white male power fantasies.

Just let women be powerful and not nubile and let them have character arcs over fucking thirty and let them be CENTERED in their own. fucking. narratives.

God damnit Steinberg.

James Flint, mlm extraordinaire

Oh, my love. My most amazing child. The light of my life. My purest cinnamon roll.

~~And now we’ve come to the dreaded Silverflint criticism part of our programming. Please please know and remember this isn’t a criticism of people who ship Silverflint. As I said up top, Your Tomato Is Not My Tomato and that’s cool. Please don’t take this next part as an attack on Silverflint as a fandom ship.~~

My criticism of Steinberg as it relates to Flint is related to:

What a romantic/sexual relationship with Silver being the basis of the tension and plot means for Flint in particular as a gay or mostly mlm man.

Refusing to confirm Thomas and James being alive at the end and honestly the whole finale in general but like I’ll try and focus.

The major problem I have with Silver and Flint being coded as in love with each other is the implications there in terms of gay men’s relationships to other men.

From every corner, men are inundated with the idea that any close relationship between them must be gay. That intimacy cannot exist unless there are sexual feelings involved. That a relationship cannot be close, deep and soul shattering and life altering, unless one guy secretly(or not so secretly) wants to bone the other dude. That two men cannot value each other as partners or friends or truly know each other unless they are gay.

Seeing both of the meaningful relationships Flint forms with other men be sexually coded feels a bit the same way as Anne and Max’s sexual assault plotlines does vis-a-vis being wlw. (Even with Gates, Flint never spoke about Thomas or his plans - Silver is absolutely the closest person to Flint besides Thomas and Miranda.) And this is just as true for Silver. Having both Flint and Madi - the two people he trusts - both be people he’s in love with also just feels. I don’t know.

It feels like a confusion between male intimacy and male love that is so so familiar to me as a gay man I could choke on it. Where they wanted these men to have a deep and really lasting connection, but could only figure out how to do it if they were in love. Friendship wouldn’t have been enough - only romantic and sexual love is enough for the gay man(or men, at all).

Just because it isn’t queerbaiting doesn’t mean it’s good rep, and I would have liked to see truly deep male friendships that did not center on sexual attraction - particularly for Flint as a confirmed mlm(and Silver too, if you’re counting him. The same arguments for why I dislike Flint being paired with Silver are also true in the reverse.)

Even if both Flint and Silver were confirmed mlm I still would have LOVED to see a platonic relationship between them. In fact I would have loved that EVEN MORE. Men! Who fuck men! Not needing to fuck each other to be important to one another! Who made this. Very delicious.

But because there weren’t any queer writers on the show, writers who understand this kind of struggle that gay and mlm men face, they thought ‘oh, let’s also have them be in love with each other. More gay rep is better gay rep, right?’ False. THOUGHTFUL gay rep is better gay rep.

Okay and here’s my last thing. The fact that Steinberg refuses to say whether or not the explicitly mlm men are alive at the end of the show - that the words he specifically uses are ‘up for interpretation’ is. Fuck, it’s gross, okay? It’s fucking gross.

I have been around enough men, enough people in power, enough people with leverage who also know how to play the field, to know that when someone wants a group’s support but does not agree with them, their go to phrasing is that it is ‘up for debate’ or ‘up for interpretation.’

Say the gays are alive. Steinberg refusing to acknowledge the reality of the ending of his show to maintain his own sense of artistic integrity is what, honestly, really sets me off about him and I don’t care if this is a nuanced take.

Like yes, death of the author. I honestly don’t care if he thinks they’re dead or alive. What I care about is that he thinks he can get away with being clever and leaning hard into a story is true/untrue’ - doesn’t realize what the implications of that are, and didn’t when he was writing, and didn’t have anyone else in the room who would think about it either.

ANYWAY. So this is....my long drawn out explanation for why I do not like Steinberg. Uhhhhh tune in next week for more of my totally unpopular opinions!

hiii hello everyone! sorry it’s taken me so long to get on this BUT it’s all for good reason! i thought i would combine this post into me sharing some of the works i am most proud of this year as well as spreading more love in this wonderful little community because i truly love you all tons and being a part of such a lovely group of people has made me beyond happy this year. it’s been a difficult year for all of us and i’m just so glad that i can give back the love and care y’all can give to me 💛

okay, so i think that’s everyone that i either talk to regularly or admire a lot! in case i didn’t mention you, please please feel free to reach out to me because i mean no offense at all - my brain is small haha. would also like to shout out all my anons who send me asks and bear with my late responses these days because of life, i adore you all and i love answering your asks.

if you’re still reading after this... whole monster of a post, i’m just gonna quickly mention some things i’ve been proud of either writing or making this year. in no particular order:

1. my weary heart has come to rest in yours. this is a fic i wrote in an... interesting headspace, and i was really going through my chanonpom feelings at the time. i’m really proud of how it came out and i adored writing chanon through pom’s pov. also i kinda love how i tied in p’bird’s song prip dtah in with the fic because i adore the song and it fits so well with them.

2. petekao week 2020. i guess this is sort of cheating, because these are technically 7 fics, BUT. i am actually proud of myself for writing seven, and i think they’re all of fairly good quality. i just really love this little universe i created for the dbk characters after the show and this whole week was just so warm and lovely to be a part of.

3. this set of num and prang from a gift for whom you hate. this moment really stuck with me from the finale and i actually am really proud of the colouring and how it came out! i think the blues really popped and i managed to lighten this dark ass scene without whitewashing mek or aye. the fireworks gif also is one of my favourites i’ve made! num and prang’s whole relationship was so pure throughout the entirety of this show, i adored them.

4. but love is impossible and it goes on despite the impossible. this is the longest fic i’ve posted so far and i’m super proud of it - it’s also my most well-received fic. the yunmeng brothers mean the world to me and i just... wanted to write about jiang cheng and his love for his brother and give them a somewhat happy ending, in one future at least.

5. there’s an art to honesty. i think i really nailed my version of kao in this work! i just really loved writing this fic so much, especially because it was right after the whole ‘scandal’ with new happened. i was really just finding a way to separate kao from him, and i delved into my feelings with this fic as well, because i relate to kao in multiple ways. either way, i thought writing this fic was fun and a lot of people loved it too, which made me so soft!

if you’ve read this far, i personally adore you! while this has been a difficult year, i am blessed to have been part of this loving community, and i really hope that next year will be kinder to us all and give us good shows and discussions! i love you all. stay safe and stay kind, friends 💛

I’m just gonna write for a little bit because this is on my mind and I originally wrote out this post a few days ago but tonight something else happened related to this. I just want to get my feelings and thoughts on this out there somewhere and off of my chest. I’m not gonna use any tags and I’m gonna try to slightly censor names so this post doesn’t pop up in any tags even if I don’t tag the post. I’m also gonna put it under read more too.

So there’s been a lot of drama around Scott**Cawth*on lately, the creator of the F*NAF series. He was trending on Twitter a lot recently because information got out that he donated money to M*itch*McC*onnell and T*rump and democratic politicians that don’t support trans people. He posted a response about this a few days ago basically being upfront and honest that yes he did do this but not because he wanted to hurt the lgbtq+ community or other minorities or because he supported these politicians social views but because he felt like they’d be the best to help the economy. There’s a lot more too it than that and his words are much better than how I could describe or explain it. But after reading it and reading some of the responses to it and now he’s retiring... I honestly feel super conflicted about this whole situation...

On the one hand, I don’t necessarily think that Scott is a bad person or a bigot, but he did do bigoted actions. He’s done a lot of genuinely good things and I think most situations have more to them then just what’s on the surface. I honestly think he was trying to do what he personally thought was right but it feels like he’s just ignorant on how what he did contributes to oppression in America. I don’t even hate the people who accept his response and still want to support him either. I’ve seen many different types of people still support him. I appreciate him being honest and actually responding to it though. Plus anyone who doxxed him over this and sent him death threats and made him and his pregnant wife’s lives feel like they’re in danger before there was a even a response or explanation, deserves a serious fuck you! How can you sit there advocating for human rights and people to be treated equally when you do that sort of shit?! That’s crossing the line! You’re no better than some of the bigots out there if you think threating to kill someone would ever make them want to support you! Plus how do you think that makes people in these minorities look too? But on the other hand, it doesn’t matter what his intentions were. People have a right to be angry at him, upset with him, criticize him and not support him in the future anymore. He actively supported people who have done horrible things and continue to do horrible things. People who actively want to hurt people in US and want certain groups of people to not exist. Especially people of color and the people in the lgbtq+ community! Anyone who thinks this is people “canceling him” because of his views and because he’s a republican, DO NOT understand why this a big deal or why so many people are hurt by these actions! It’s so much more than just a difference of views or opinions. Which shouldn’t even be considered political or opinions in the the first place! People’s rights are not fucking pizza toppings or ice cream flavors! People fighting for their rights to live and fucking exist in peace shouldn’t be considered politics! I don’t give a shit that he’s a republican, I give a shit over him supporting people who want people like my sisters to not have rights! Do I think democratic politicians are that much better? No and I think not enough people who aren’t bigoted criticize them when they do something shitty. I don’t even hate republicans because I know there’s some who aren’t bigoted and don’t support these politicians. I think politics have problems all across the board and now turned into this fucked up game of “pick the one YOU think is less shitty! ;D” It’s a big mess. Plus I’m sorry but donating a ton of money to charity also doesn’t excuse horrible actions. There’s been a ton of shitty people who donated to charity to make themselves look better. Not saying that’s what Scott did, I’m just saying that reasoning is a bad excuse when you use it on people being critical of him. Just because you admire someone or like what they create doesn’t mean they can do no wrong. Sometimes you need to be critical of them and call them out when they do something genuinely bad. Yes there’s people who are against him that have gone too far with that. But I’ve seen so many of the people supporting Scott just brush off his bad actions like they aren’t a big deal at all and I think it kind of gross. All I ask is for people to think for themselves in the situation and be open to listening other perspectives

It’s all such conflicting feelings for me personally and honestly I don’t know how to feel because I understand all the feelings and perspectives from each side. Plus this disappointment hits me personally because I genuinely enjoy f*naf and the things Scott’s created and what those games inspired people to create. There’s a YouTuber I really enjoy who does mostly f*naf videos and I’m sitting here wondering if I should still watch him. I had a huge hyperfixation on with fnaf during a time where I wasn’t really letting myself enjoy anything a few years ago. If it wasn’t for these games I never would’ve discovered Seán and his videos. If you’ve been following me for a long time, you KNOW why that’s a huge deal for me! I guess it’s a case of separating the art from the artist but still. This is really conflicting for my own morals and my own empathy, I don’t know how to feel about it. I’m just conflicted and disappointed. I don’t want to support Scott in the future though and that’s my own opinion.

a very very genuine question: so its bad to repost art but no one says anything when people repost things from the source material/creator's sketches.....why?like sure everyone who likes it may recognize the style but there are plenty of fan artists i recognize immediately, new or old art, with or without. to me it just feels the same, like either dont repost art or people should be able to repost stuff, i dont see how they can work at the same time. and this isnt me saying people should be allowed to repost and all that bc i do understand the theory of why reposting hurts artists, just that the logic doesnt seem to fit once it extends to famous artists/creators. just bc its official and easily recognizable makes it okay? how does that work? again, there are plenty of fanartists who are easily recognizable and lose no money when people repost their work (bc they posted it for free) and from my own observation, it seems it just, somehow, makes them want to do art less (from what i have read from artists themselves). why do we not consider that when it comes to official creators? wouldnt they also feasibly be less motivated seeing their hard work plastered across the internet for free when thats the sole way they make their income? and its not a system where its solely sticking it to the man bc it hurts the artists income, as well. but if it makes them happy to see people enjoying and sharing their work with others, drawing interest, why isnt it the same with fan artists? people often repost art, not out of malice or intent to claim credit, but bc they enjoy it + want to share it, esp on social media where sharing isnt a feature (instagram, for example) again im not trying to justify reposting, just confused about the contradiction

First of all instagram does have a form of sharing posts- stories. Which yes they are temporary by default, but you can use the highlight feature to collect your favorite things you’ve shared from people right there on your own profile AND it links back to the original post and can permanently be on your profile as long as you keep it there. You can even label them and everything! But then moving on to answering more of your actual questions

To start: this is a very complicated thing. And I feel everyone trying to answer it might have slightly varied opinions.

I personally see a pretty clear distinction between ‘Officially published/released’ works (like comic book [as like you’ve probably seen I frequently post comic panels] or other materials that may have been released in creator guides, official video game art, promotional art for things, etc etc) as opposed to like, personal work and fanart. Because with official works:

There’s usually a source to buy it and you should if you’re referencing it a ton (while I don’t own every comic I’ve ever read I do have a lot and if I did read something first through illegal means [because some comics are just straight up hard to find due to age/being out of print] and enjoyed it I try to seek out a physical copy after if possible)

There is a level of far wider recognition (I know you personally might find fanartists’ styles recognizable but like, things that are in mainstream media.. have just such a higher profile. it’s not really comparable)

If you’re not supporting the official release you’re harming the big company that published it far more than the individual artist (like, the individual artist probably also wouldn’t appreciate it, because it can effect them for sure as well, but they’re not gonna be taking the brunt of the damage unless it was entirely self-published work, which I’d definitely categorize differently from what I’m mainly talking about here.)

Often fanartists/professional artists who aren’t that well known, in addition to wanting to just create work for the sake of it, also want to build their own platform, to have an audience that they interact with. Or like, if they’re offering commissions, a bigger platform puts you in a position where people will actually see the art and want to commission you. When you say reposts of smaller artists’ fanart doesn’t ‘loose them money’ because they didn’t charge to post it, you’re missing the fact that it makes them loose out on proper linked-back-to-them exposure. Especially like, when a repost account on insta or something says ‘ah yes credit to [username] on tumblr’ the vast majority of people who see it aren’t going to then open up a whole different website and look for the artist. Some people might! but if there’s anything i’ve learned from working professionally in arts marketing it’s that people want things that are convenient and directly in front of them. Someone who wants to see more works because they liked one is significantly more likely to click on the username of someone who posted it rather than opening up a browser or a different app and searching a separate name put in the caption.

Then honestly, I do feel weird about reposts of professional artists’ more personal works unless the artist has stated they’re fine with people reposting with credit. It should be about the comfort level of the artist. I think a lot of professional artists who aren’t in a position where they’re as worried about building a platform, because they already have one and might have professional connections/opportunities already lined up, might not really care about reposts especially on a website they don’t use. (Like tumblr. I’m coming at this mostly from a comics artist perspective here, but most professional artists I see are waaaay more active on twitter and instagram than tumblr) If it’s a website they don’t use, it’s not taking away from the platform they had been building there for themselves. And also, some artists really just don’t give a shit, which is their choice they can make with their work! But that’s not a universal thing. One artist being fine with their personal art being reposted =/= all artists being fine with it.

In my own experience as a fanartist, when I see my art reposted without credit, especially when it’s art I’ve also already posted on the same platform... it’s definitely disheartening. Even worse is when the repost gets even more attention than my original post. (something that has happened to me multiple times!) Like, it can get so upsetting! Because it lets me know that someone else was using my art to build their platform and I got exactly zero benefit out of it. Then when it’s reposted with credit it’s a little less annoying, but I still don’t... get much out of it. Especially if it’s an instagram repost and they credit my tumblr not my account on there, since insta captions don’t actually do links unless it’s to other insta accounts. Also with insta for example, I have a 'business’ account set up so I can look at and track popularity of my posts and see how they’re doing as something to keep in mind when considering posting times, etc etc. When other people repost my art there I have no control over it. That sucks a lot! Also, when I quite literally ask people not to repost my art (it is IN! MY! DESCRIPTION!) and they still do, it’s just straight up disrespectful. I asked for a boundary to be respected with my work and people have just completely ignored it. That doesn’t feel good at all.

But, conversely, I’m gonna talk about my more professional irl work for a sec. I’m a graphic designer, so I do things like posters, logos, etc, When I design a poster for a client that is meant to be advertising something, even if it’s got my own original illustration or something as part of it, I know my name isn’t necessarily going to be attached to it the same way as it is with my personal work. I get a credit line somewhere, but that’s in a fine print probably not even on the poster itself at all, but that’s like, part of what I signed up for. I already get paid separately, I am giving permission for my work to be out of my own hands in that way. Professional work for a client is often setup in some way similar to this. I don’t get mad when I walk down the street and see a poster I made up somewhere without it directly ‘linking’/referencing back to me (aside from maybe my signature if it had an illustration), in fact I go ‘OMG ITS THERE ugh wait i see one pixel is off oh noooooo” and then move on with my day. It’s just an entirely different situation because that kind of work has a different arrangement from the start, where you know it’s going to be put in a different type of circulation.

So yeah, my word isn’t god here, but I definitely see official releases as having a different set of permissions based on the fact that they are published in an entirely different situation. And I think reposts of personal art aren’t cool if the artist isn’t okay with them, no matter how big a platform they have. Other people probably approach this with a slightly different perspective, but that’s mine!

*Sad Trombone Noise* That’s all, folks

I’m just going to go ahead and put my whole entire thoughts about the end of Suppression under the cut because no one who came to this blog for fun times should have to read that.

So, we have an answer to the age old question: Can producing copious amounts of fanart and commentary on a webcomic keep it alive?

No. It can’t. ....Still tried, though!

PART ONE: WHAT I THINK OF THE COMIC ENDING

For the record: I hope none of this comes off as callous or blunt. I’m just kind of stating things as they come to me, and I promise I’ll be getting to some real mushy stuff by the end. Y’all should know that I have NOTHING but respect for Deg and Suppression, and I am in no way mad or resentful or anything like that. You’ll never see that kind of negativity out of me, and creators should always do what’s best for them, ESPECIALLY with unpaid projects. Like, duh!

That being said, I’m not as sad about this as I thought I would be... but that’s because I think I got my grief out of the way several months back. I’ve been following webcomics for a very, VERY long time (since 2007-ish?) and I’ve come to recognize a lot of ‘symptoms’ of when a creator is losing steam and getting ready to give up the ghost on a creative project. Missed updates, vocalizing a lack of inspiration, switching things up with a different format to try and shake things up a bit... These aren’t uncommon. Seriously, this is all stuff that comics like Poppy O Possum, Monster Pop, Cucumber Quest, and a million other cancelled webcomics have done months or weeks before they were cancelled. Hell, Paranatural is circling that drain right now (though that is mostly due to the author’s considerable wrist injuries). I have DOZENS of webcomics on my RSS feed, I know the signs.

So when I saw the slowed down updates, the switch to a different format, and the “would you guys read other stories by me if I ever stopped doing Suppression...?” all within relatively short succession, I was like “Aw shit, here we go.” I was really hoping it wouldn’t happen, but... I’m also not surprised that it did. The writing’s been on the wall, it was just a matter of WHEN, but I wasn’t about to encourage it, so I just kind of kept an eye on it and... yeah.

Plus, the internet has been growing increasingly hostile to independent webcomics in the attempt to centralized it with things like webtoons and tapastic (both of which I HATE, fuck instascrolling comics let me flip pages). You really have to be in a collective like hiveworks or spiderforest (the latter of which is GREAT for smaller artists with nonetheless long/consistent archives) to accrue new fans nowadays unless you have a solid social media presence. I found Suppression via Deviantart back in the day! This is because no one even thinks to LOOK for these sorts of things anymore or even knows how. And that sucks! And I hate it! But I get it! But that’s probably why no one noticed the comic was back, unfortunately. :/ I did my best to help with that, obviously posting a TON about it on my own blog, trying to lure folks in with neat fanart, but... it’s clear it didn’t amount to much. I’m not a popular artist.

And really, I’m not THAT upset about the comic being shelved! (Ok I am upset but I’m not going to pitch a fit, I’m a grownass woman.) Suppression has been happening for... a VERY long time. The original comic GOT a conclusion, if a bittersweet one! There’s like, 600 pages of content there! That is a BEEFY library of stuff! It’s kind of hard to say “it died too young!” when its over a decade old. And like... I can’t bring myself to punish ANYONE for wanting to try other ideas, I just hope there are other ideas! I’d certainly hate for this to be the last anyone hears of Degulus in general. I really, genuinely can’t wait to see what comes next!

PART 1.5: OH WOW LOOK AT THAT STORY MAP, OOPS I DIDN’T WRITE ENOUGH FOR THIS TO BE A PROPER PART

I’m also really happy to hear where the story WAS going to go though! Though holy shit, Iggy. Based on his position as one of the last uninfected humans in the last story who was really good at staying that way, hearing about that is. Uh. Horrifying.

Plus, if Charlie was one of Azgrut’s friends when Arrie made everything go to shit, and was then on Merry’s expedition... no wonder he hates her AND Wights. Dude just can’t catch a fucking break.

I do still have SOME questions, but I’ll leave that until the end.

PART 2: WHY DID I EVEN LIKE THIS COMIC ANYWAY

I guess though, I should go into why I always liked this comic because I don’t think... I’ve ever said that before? Individual characters yes, but not the comic as a whole. This is the kind of self reflection I’m a little self conscious about because it says as much about ME as the comic, but I hope none of this comes off as mean or weird. It’s just... what I like. Suppression might be a stew when you’re looking for a sandwich, but if you’re saying that you can’t slap soggy meat onto bread and say it’s good, you’ve never had a sloppy joe.

First of all; I LOVE comics with huge ensemble casts and a lot of overlapping plot threads. I feel like a lot of other stories with smaller casts can be more boring because each character has to play a specific role to make the story “work” as opposed to just. Being themselves. You know, like the 5 man ensemble where there HAS to be a leader, a lancer, a bruiser, a girl, and a “funny one”. And things similar to that. This comic doesn’t have that necessarily- nobody’s necessarily fitting a role, or if they do they’re wildly different explorations on similar positions, such as how the Wights are all evil necromancer folk but with differing opinions on what it means to be like that, or how the different infected people respond to the new demonic part of themselves. Each person feels like a PERSON with their own fleshed out opinion, and when someone acts in a different way than expected, you know its because of their own personal thoughts and opinions and not because that’s the part of the story where x event needs to happen so y can occur in act 3.

Like... Iggy not leaving Ebon Creek even though Trevor thought he totally would. Like in an ordinary story, that’s what would happen! Ok its season two, time to pack up and go to a new setting with the main characters! ...Except that’s not what Iggy wants, and anyone who’s been paying attention to his character would know that. This also leads to really interesting reactions and events when very disparate characters are shoved into the same room, and its very likely for that to happen considering how weirdly events can go! I love that! I mean shit, Arrie and Sam as best friends? Who would have guessed, but its great!

And yes, the characters were fantastically written! I LOVE the snappy, snarky dialogue in this comic and how nobody takes ANYTHING lying down. Every single character drives the story along instead of just letting things be left to chance, and it really leaves me on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happen next. Who cares if the story meanders a bit? Its about the journey, not the destination, and the journey is rad as fuck. (But uh... I can easily see as a creator why its easy to get frustrated with the story feeling like it never GOES anywhere. That’s valid.) And the fight scenes! My god I love to see these people hit each other! The weird power combinations lead to some REALLY entertaining stuff.

I really enjoyed the settings too- both of them! Urban fantasy is one of those things that I usually find... uh... a little boring. Like, I see so many of them go “Ok its the exact same regular boring world except hey look someone can do a wizard thing”. There’s no attempt to make a cool aesthetic, or think too hard about how it changes things and WHY the world would seem completely normal except With Wizards This Time, and it leaves me yawning a bit. Suppression has always been a breath of fresh air in that regard! There’s so much effort put into developing that neat DARK urban fantasy aesthetic, with the cultural implications that entails. Ebon Creek as the magical equivalent of a nuclear disaster, and the Rings in the reboot as the last island of “normalcy” in an apocalyptic world that’s slowly encroaching closer. That’s awesome, and it really ties into what the character are actually doing instead of just being aesthetic window dressing.

I also love Suppression’s art style. Which was a hard sell for most people I tried to show it to, unfortunately (and oh my god did I TRY). BUT the character models show off the characters’ most distinctive traits and general body types while also leaving a lot of room for interpretation for what they’d look like as “real” people. Room... for say... an aspiring fanartist to just sidle herself into with hot takes like “Iggy is a scarecrow but no one can tell because of the baggy clothes”. The art style also leaves just enough room for goofy faces AND implied really nasty body horror! Doesn’t get much better! Not to mention its just so damn different from everything else out there. A much appreciated breath of fresh air! Its fun!

PART 3: WHAT NOW

So uh yeah, that’s why I liked Suppression so much! So... what does this mean for me? Will I keep posting fan art? Uh... mmmmaybe? P... Probably not? Don’t get me wrong, my love of these characters isn’t going anywhere. And there’s a lot more I still wanted to do- more of the ‘furries’ series (featuring Grenner as a possum right off the bat), or an AU “journal” series that would show what teh original Ebon Creek crew would look like if they went off the deep end, fully demonic. But I’m shelving those now as well. Without new content (or even the promise of it, which is why I kept going before the reboot started), I get the feeling I’d either:

A. Get sick of it, as I’d be constantly retreading old ground. B. Look absolutely pathetic, beating a long dead horse. C. Get so tied up in embarrassing AUs that it’d cease to be recognizable as being from the same comic anymore.

Frankly, I’m not looking forward to any of that happening. Not to mention, admittedly, part of the reason why I MADE all that fanart was because the first time I did it, I made those profile paintings as the payoff to a longstanding promise. I said I’d give Deg fanart a decade ago. He made a MASSIVE reference sheet of his characters as a result. I said “Wow, I’ll get on that fanart soon!” And then nothing happened, and then I felt bad about it when I remembered years later.

So many, many years too late I made some fanart, FULLY expecting the reboot to never happen, and got? A really positive response about it? So duh, I made more fanart knowing that it was helping and contributing to the story planning and direction. Wouldn’t you know it, getting a positive response and engagement with your art makes you make MORE art, who knew! It was a lot of fun! But... I don’t want to keep making fanart and pushing Suppression if it’s decided that its not happening, because that feels a lot like a guilt trip when the audience is this small. Hell, it already felt a lot like that when I was making more fanart for the old timeline rather than the reboot one simply because I knew the characters better. So I might do a couple things for fun or if I’m practicing a new technique, but certainly not at my old volume.

I’d much rather wait around until we get tentative news of something else and then immediately lob fanart at whatever THAT is.

I’m definitely not deleting this blog though, lol.

And I guess... I should tryyyy developing/putting some of my own original stuff up more? I usually don’t bother than much because it doesn’t get much of a response, but I should still try more.

PART 5: HEY SO WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT

SO, now that that’s all out of the way, here’s some of the questions that have just been sitting here burning in my mind that I might as well get out now:

1. What the FUCK is Santris’s deal. Or was his deal in the preboot timeline, seeing as he never showed up in reboot. I’ve avoided asking this question for a long time because I didn’t actually want to know. I LOVE Santris’s position in the story as “dude who freaks everyone out by virtue of being too damn normal”, and being “mysterious” was his whole shtick so I didn’t want to ruin it for myself by asking. But I am now, dammit.

2. Did Sam know that Merry both found and then lost the Heart of Adigard? Was Arrie ever... filled in on that? Or was it more Merry and Alaster went missing for a couple weeks, came back looking like shit, and when Sam asked what the hell happened they were just like “Oh. You know. Stuff.” Cuz it seems like if Arrie was interested in that, Sam and by extension Meredith would be the first people she would want to ask!

3. Why did Bael opt to puppet around Iggy instead of just... following along on his own? He’s just kind of a shitty fighter without someone to control? No one liked him but he still wanted in? Iggy was being a dick and was like “OH YEAH? WHAT IF I DO THIS.” and just lived in his body for a couple weeks?

4. Where can I keep up with whatever you’re doing now? Twitter? Or something?

5. Who were the people that Sigvaldi was chit chatting with at the end of the preboot timeline after he left the universe? People outside the normal story no doubt, but I was never sure WHO, exactly. Though considering that again, they’re outside the narratives this may end up being similar to the Santris question where “If it’s relevant in the future, don’t tell me”.

6. Actually what was Charlie’s deal in the reboot too. Was he still a big bag of ghosts or what. Could you imagine taking your friend on a big adventure and he goes scouting or whatever and comes back stuffed full of So Many Ghosts. That would suck but also be kind of funny.

7. Were there models or concept art for anything made that you didn’t show off before that you want to now that there’s nothing stopping you?

8. What is the heart of adigard anyway. I mean clearly its a Big Fucking Deal, but what did it DO exactly?

9. Which character was your favorite. You’ve gotta have one. My best friend’s favorite is Sigvaldi just from what I told him about the comic and I want to say mine is Iggy but its probably secretly Arthur. :C Fuckin asshole, stealing my “favorite character” slot.

10. Favorite scene from the whole comic? Just something that made you go “Oh HELL yeah” to pull off/get to.

11. Did Max ACTUALLY stop existing and just got folded in with Arthur, or was he going to pop up somewhere down the line as a gotcha?

T H E B A S I C S Given Name: Rafael Caleb Isserlis Nicknames: His family all call him Ray, but most people just call him Rafael. H E A L T H Physical Health: Rafael is in excellent health– he loves doing any sort of physical activity, especially if it involves being outdoors, so he's very fit. He works out on a regular basis and eats quite healthy (though he's not opposed to a little junk food now and then). He gets sick now and then, just minor things like a cold or a mild case of the flu, but he's never been seriously sick or anything. Basically, Rafael takes great care of himself. Physical Abilities/Limitations: He can lift very heavy things thanks to his weight training at the gym. He's got good endurance/stamina– he can hike or run for quite a long time before needing a break. He's a good artist with a very distinctive style; he is constantly drawing, doodling on napkins, just keeping his hands busy whenever he can. Addictions: No addictions to speak of. Allergies: Citrus in general makes his mouth hurt, but sometimes he eats it anyway because he just can't resist. Mental Health: Generally good. He had a very stable upbringing with lots of supportive friends and family around. He is lucky enough to never have experienced any sort of mental illness or any really traumatic events in his life.

H I S T O R Y Summary: Rafael was born in Sunnyvale, California to wealthy parents (his mother is an OB/GYN, and his father is a very successful software engineer). He was the fourth of five children. He grew up surrounded by a very loving family, including much of his extended family, and had a near idyllic childhood. Growing up, Rafael always showed an aptitude for art– he was quite a skilled artist from a young age, but he also had a deep interest in his father’s work and loved all things to do with technology. He taught himself to code when he was about twelve years old and even made a couple of very basic games just to practice. Rafael was always a great student, not exactly straight A’s since he had a bit of a hard time in his literature classes and some of the more complicated math classes, but he never got any grades lower than a B, and he always tried his hardest and studied a lot, did extra credit whenever he could, etc. He also always had a lot of friends and was a bit girl crazy in high school, so he was always dating a new girl. He was on his high school’s soccer team as well– the PE coach always wanted him to go out for the football team, but Rafael hated football and still does, so he never bothered, preferring to use the time to do various volunteer projects or just hang out with his friends. Thanks to his excellent GPA and a wealth of extracurriculars and volunteer experience, Rafael had an easy time getting accepted into UC Berkeley. He initially majored in Computer Software Engineering, as he’d always planned– but after a trip across Europe with some of his friends just before his Sophomore year of college, he had a shift in perspective and realized that he really wanted to focus on his art after all. He changed his major to focus on Drawing and Painting, which was a bit of a surprise to his family, but they were, as always, very supportive of his decision, especially since it turned out he wouldn’t lose any progress toward his degree. After graduating, Rafael decided to do what he’d always wanted to do and live abroad. He decided on living in Spain, since he had taken nearly eight years of Spanish between high school and college and was almost fluent at that point. He spent a few years just travelling around Spain, exploring, working odd jobs, meeting people, just having a good time. Eventually he ended up settling in Barcelona after meeting a particularly good group of people, finding himself a quaint little house in the heart of the city, and getting a job as a bouncer in a local strip club. He has been there ever since. Job History: He didn't have his first job until college– he worked as a barista at a Starbucks on campus for his entire college career, which he actually really enjoyed. Once he moved to Spain and started traveling around, he did tons of odd jobs helping out with manual labor, working in restaurants, helping out around people's houses, doing yard work, just anything he could find that didn't require a lot of commitment. Once he settled in Barcelona, he took a job as a bouncer in a strip club because it paid decently well and fit into his schedule very nicely– that is where he's been ever since. Fondest Memories: Lots of happy childhood memories, too many to list actually. One of his fondest memories is his trip across Europe with his college friends. Plus all his adventures across Spain and the various times his sister Eliana has come to visit him. Worst Experiences: His paternal grandparents both died in a car accident when Rafael was fourteen, and that was probably the single worst experience of his life. C O M M U N I C A T I O N Speech Pace/Style: Definitely not a smooth talker, but not super awkward either (unless he’s trying to flirt). He’s laid back when he speaks, not overly formal, always seems pretty relaxed (again, unless he is attempting to flirt). He doesn’t talk excessively, but he’s not quiet or shy either, always loves to jump into a conversation, especially if it’s about a subject he’s interested in. If someone gets him started on a subject he’s passionate about, he gets very animated and excited about it. P E R S O N A L I T Y, M I N D S E T, A N D B E L I E F S Personality Type: ENFP-A Sense of Humor: Rafael loves to laugh and has a pretty open sense of humor. The only type of humor he doesn’t vibe with is super offensive or raunchy/sexual humor, that’s just not his thing. But anything silly, clever, wordplay or puns, non-sequitur/weird humor, all of that is totally his cup of tea. Habits: Rafael is a bit fidgety and always has to be doing something with his hands. He can be still if he actively focuses on not fidgeting, but it's a little difficult for him. He's constantly drawing on napkins or little pieces of paper, on himself, and on others if they'll let him. If he doesn't have a pen handy then he'll crack his knuckles or he'll kinda rock back and forth on the balls of his feet. He just really cannot hold still unless his mind is fully occupied with something. Fears/Phobias: The whole idea of ghosts or demons really freaks him out. He also sometimes has a touch of existential dread and wonders if he’s going to be alone forever, but that usually doesn’t last long, just a sleepless night or two and then he gets past it. Strengths: Rafael is a very caring, sweet person who is genuinely interested in other people and loves to help whenever he can. He is attentive to people’s needs and tends to anticipate those needs in advance, so he is quite a thoughtful person. In general, he’s an optimist who likes to look on the bright side of things no matter how bad the situation may get and tries not to let the little things get him down. He is also very protective of those he loves, and though he is friendly to people almost all of the time, if anyone is rude to or tries to hurt someone he cares about, he won’t hesitate to speak up on behalf of or physically protect his loved one. They have been working together on a comic book series for a while now; she is a very talented writer who comes up with stories that blow Rafael's mind. They see each other fairly often not just to work on the comics, but to go on walks or out to lunch, or on the occasional hike. Relationship History: Rafael had a ton of relationships in high school, many of which lasted two weeks or less and obviously those relationships didn't get serious at all– Rafael was just kind of playing the field at that point. He didn't actually have sex, or a serious relationship, until his first year of college. He then dated his first serious girlfriend, and they lasted about six months before she broke things off because she felt he was more attached than she was and she didn't want to waste his time. Itai and Eliana are more like Rafael– they appreciate and enjoy aspects of Judaism but they don’t really believe in it. D A I L Y L I F E Living Arrangements: He lives in a cute little one bedroom house right in the heart of the city, on a very busy street. He loves being right in the middle of everything, so it’s ideal for him. The place was a bit rundown when he first bought it, but he has fixed it up quite a bit and although no one would say it’s luxurious or anything, it’s definitely nice and comfortable. He loves having guests over and has lots of seating and a large TV, plus a pull-out couch in the living room just in case anyone stays the night, not to mention a spacious king sized bed in his room.
