/ Since I mention in my pinned post that this blog has some changes from canon, I'm going to make a rundown post that I'll be linking in my muse info on my blog. My timeline post covers some of this too and has other things canon to my muse that aren't here because they're timeline based and not direct changes based. I'll update this as needed.

Repede had another owner before Yuri got him in the game. I'm combining this with FS. Thus, Repede would have been basically an infant when he and Lambert ended up with the knights. From there he took to Yuri as he did in the FS drama CD so Yuri was primarily in charge of Repede during his stay with the knights, but he and Flynn raised Repede together as is in line with the game. This means they continued raising him together even after Yuri left.

In the JP version of the game, Yuri says he was with the knights for a short time but doesn't specify how long that time was, so I'm completely yeeting the "three months" dub aspect from this blog. I can't reasonably assume he signed up, took the exams, went into training, went from errand boy to battle status, then went on normal missions and left in the span of three months. So as usual, we're following the JP timeline. Generally anything the dub makes up or actively changes from the original context/tone gets yeeted here.

In the FS drama CD, Flynn is extremely repetitive about Yuri quitting the knights and with his nagging. At least with @mistralxsoul and anyone else who prefers it the following way in threads with my muse, we're toning it down because it just feels absolutely batshit to us how bad it is in the drama CD (it's worse than even the movie itself).

Since the timeline for Yuri and Flynn's knighthood conflicts super horrendously between the novel, FS/FS drama CD and the game, I'm mixing all of it together (primarily because I consider the novel more canon than the FS drama CD). Basically (for my muse), they signed their names and didn't take the exams immediately, but when they eventually did it was at least a couple years later, due to Yuri still having his teen appearance when he signed his name to join in the novel. This is because otherwise, if I average my muse's teen age out to be fifteen/sixteen and his age to be about eighteen/nineteen in the knights, it would mean he'd been with the knights (including training, etc) anywhere from 2-4 years if his sign up was immediately after the novel's events. If they were to sign up and join immediately after the novel timeline, it also makes even less sense because Flynn's attitude in FS and his relationship with Yuri (and remember, the FS drama CD comes before the movie's timeline and Flynn was even worse about Yuri's attitude in the CD) would seem like it literally 180'd overnight.

So basically, to avoid all this insanity, a short summarized timeline for my muse would be: they signed up but didn't join right away, Flynn moved away and was gone for a couple years or so after the events of the novel, both of them changed in personality/behavior drastically in that time, they met up at the exams, they went into training, they got sent to Niren's squad, they were more errand boys than actual knights when they were still super fresh newbies and Yuri was extremely annoyed with that, they were actual knights for a while (I'm going to say Yuri was a knight for at least six months or more, especially if I consider the trajectory of Flynn's behavior toward him in the drama CD through the end of FS), the events of FS were not one straight timeline and things happened between the days etc etc, then Yuri left.

Following the game's drama CDs, Yuri hesitated a lot more when Flynn was injured at Zaude. If not for Flynn nudging him to go after Alexei even while wounded, Yuri wouldn't have left him there.

Following the same drama CDs, it's Raven and Repede who find and look after Yuri when he wakes up after Zaude. That is to say, Repede was already with Raven and lunged when he sniffed out Yuri in his room (super doggo powers). Raven followed Repede in a panic, who ran to Yuri's room upon realizing Yuri was there, and Raven finds Yuri awake but right in the middle of passing back out (the sound is basically Raven's voice being distant with some ringing, so it's from Yuri's point of view that Raven is trying to get him to steady himself but he passes back out). Raven takes care of him from there until he's recovered properly enough to go back. In this time, Rita did investigating and eventually, with the others minus Raven, went to Zopheir after deciding they couldn't dawdle and just wait in their grief. While they're there, Yuri and Raven have headed out after them and show up together and reunite with the rest of the group. Raven has already been updated on what Yuri knows from Duke at this point (Duke saved him as usual, but the drama CD changes come in after that), so the two of them update everyone else.

In the game, there's a skit with Yuri, Flynn and Karol where Yuri mentions "playing in a river", but in the novel, they were actually getting water at the river and the other kids were playing in the river when they got attacked by a monster, fell into the river (Yuri also mentions (I thiiiink in another unrelated skit) that just falling into "a river" was enough to panic him), and Flynn grabbed onto a merman. For my muse, I'm just going with Yuri simplifying the situation to Karol while keeping the novel's event as my muse's canon.

#{ muse info + headcanons }#/ a lot of the timeline post itself is also for me and not y'all LOL but like. if you need to know #differences in interaction with me this stuff is good to know at least bc I don't strictly follow the game canon #I follow a mix of official content and obviously some of it overlaps and retcons other things #as for the dub if you've been here long enough y'all know I hold a huge ass grudge against #how much it changes Yuri's behavior/personality and his attitude toward Flynn #but the three months thing just does not feel reasonable to me on top of the dub just making it up #and it helps SO much to have that free time period for writing #even if we assume he wasn't counting the training to officially join the knights in the dub #three months is... way too short imo and then if I combine the FS drama CD with that #it makes even less sense bc the girls tried to get Yuri to stay when he did actually almost quit #on top of the whole not rly doing knightly things for a while at first #and yeahhhh it's just a fucking MESS to try to cram everything with all this content into three months #also like since I LOOOOVE the teen arc of the novel and that's My Fucking Baby Boy #I don't want to actually change anything from it so I'm just mixing everything together to keep it all #it's like... I love all the official Yuri content and so I want to keep as much of it together as possible #but since it's not always the same people working on the content or bc there's such a time gap between content #things aren't always consistent and when it comes to writing a muse I just. NEED timeline consistency #even if I have to make it myself LMAO. I try to keep as much of the game stuff together as possible #since I know most ppl interacting with me only know the game and possibly the movie #and not all the drama CDs and all the various JP exclusive content #but it's hard to keep it together perfectly when there's so much other content I'm using that has formed my muse #like... my muse exists the way he is bc of all this content you know? and only using the game #would change him a fucking lot in hindsight with the way he thinks and reacts and such #like... there's no fucking way he's not traumatized after the events of the novel in the teen arc there's NO fucking way #it was bad enough that it nearly pushed him to murder when he was a teenager #and he might have actually done it if his foster mother didn't stop him (and end up doing it herself)#so yeah I mean... I do my best to keep him within game context with most people I interact with #but the more you interact with this boy the deeper you're gonna get into muse specific lore lol

#I actually don't like this one really but that's fine ghghj #Basically I have a bunch of clips of just me messing around with various real instruments like little door harps and childs instrumnets #like kazoos or little electronic keyboards or etc. So I save a folder of snippets of things that seem interesting #like out of a 35 minute 'I have no idea how to read or actually play music and am just improvising whatever and recording it' session #usually I'll edit it down and just save a few of the most interesting or neat sounding 30 second clips. So that later maybe I could throw #the clip somewhere and sing over it or mix it with another clip or do something else (because of the one song a day challenge thing and me #usually trying to get these done with as little effort/time as possible- I find it helps sometimes to already have part of it done. so if #you're TRULY out of ideas that day it can be like 'well I could always just look through those old kazoo snippets and slap one down and #sing over it or something I guess'' lol.. so this is one of those)#ANYWAY. so I have a folder of little saved snippets #to do that with. I think it was a little out of tune lap harp thing from the bins #I also wanted to make it echoey since it was so slow and mellow sounding but.. eh #I just don't really like the vibe as much. weird to me #Doodly Bo is also a result of the 'slap down short clip and improvise something over it' experiment though and I do actually #like that one so lol.. Some are redeemable. I think I still largely prefer no instruments or other music underneath and just #voice stuff like a capella or choir type music or whatever. But experimenting with actual sounds like drums or piano alongside can be fine #oo. I actually should learn that more since I need to make music for my games and stuff that I'm making and I'm not #going to do like.. low effort experimental choir music as the background for a visual novel lmao #I will have to begrudingly pull out an actual keyboard and maybe even *shudders* use a metronome for once just so #things are even and on beat *tears in eyes. trying not to throw up* ghbhjj #THERE's nothing wrong with it actually lol I just hate the confines of it. I think since music is the Experimental And Goofy hobby for me #I get so used to the Unstructured Play vibe of it where I don't know what I'm doing and some of it sounds like shit and it doesnt #matter because WOOO freedom just mess around do whatever! woooo and so on that when it's time to be serious like 'okay but now #you DO in fact need to try to make a song for real that sounds good and actually follow some sort of structure' its like NOOOOOO :(#alas I have no money so I have to do everything myself. and even if I got money the first thing I would hire people to do for my game would #be ART because i HATE digital art and drawing on a somputer SO much for some reason. About your language brainrot. I see your "Reader's writing can't match tyvat's long and flowery writing" and bring you "Tyvat isn't used to books over 50 pages long so a short story to the Reader is a whole dictionary to tyvat readers".

Seriously, have you seen how thin the books are? They don't wrote novels, they write short chapters formatted in the way really old stories are. As in, summarizing all the events down into one smooth story then adding a few quotes. Fanfiction writers are insane. They will willingly sit down and write hundreds of words at a time. To them, a proper modern day story of maybe, oh 10k words or so, would probably be like the Oddessy itself.

If we were to combine the two headcanons. It would end up as many historians being intimidated by this insanely long written scripture in the language of the forgotten.

I'm going to take this a step further and say that if the creator asked some people to proofread their things, it would establish a hiarchy of who is able to actually finish the book the creator read and who isn't.

I've been a bit of a salty spitoon over the recent events unfolding at NYCC so here's some GOOD news (sorta) >:00

I say (sorta) because I'm not a huge fan of mongie's work (or mongie herself) either, but DAMN if this lady doesn't know how to GET SHIT DONE-

Like GODDAMN is there a lot to show for here \(￣︶￣*\)

I don't know what the Let's Play After Dark or Omnibus works are, but it's really cool to see Linda Sejic's art here, I had NO idea what to expect when mongie announced she was going to NYCC and collaborating with Linda. I'm assuming Omnibus is likely a novelization or some kind of complimentary book to Let's Play because it has over 700 pages of stuff which is wild. Unless they just went and re-skinned the Volume 1 cover of Let's Play, I have no clue but it looks great. As for After Dark, yeah, again, no clue LMAO

Let's Play is returning in 2025, AND she's starting up a new series over on Manta (a publishing platform that's open to NSFW material which will definitely be better for mongie's work and will hopefully give WT a run for their money LOL) She hasn't stated yet where Let's Play's new home will be, but I'm assuming if it's not Manta, it might be a new independently-run site altogether, but again, we'll just have to wait and see. I remember her mentioning she wanted to do a fantasy series on her Patreon ages ago so it seems like she's finally getting the opportunity to do so. I have no idea what she's going to do with Let's Play after its S3 jump the shark finale LMAO

She's getting some merch made with BIOWORLD which is neat, though it'll be interesting to see how the quality comes out because the last creator I saw working with BIOWORLD was Smythe and the merch was uhhhh- not great. I posted about it on IG a while back but I don't know if I ever talked about it here so I'll def make that as a separate post for anyone who's curious.

But the BIG one - Let's Play is getting an anime, and it's from an actual animation studio which is a way bigger sign that it's a sure thing.

Again, I'm not a huge fan anymore of Let's Play or mongie in general, but I gotta give her credit where credit is due, she had WAY more to show for herself at NYCC than Rachel did, and the fact that she did all this after burning her bridges with WT, that's gotta sting for WT's and Rachel who still don't have anything to show for an animated TV show after four years. At this rate, there are gonna be more creators succeeding on a mass scale by choosing not to publish with Webtoons than those who did.

And who knows, maybe the anime adaption will tidy up all the problems original Let's Play had. It remains to be seen, but I think it's pretty neat to see mongie making such strides since she left the platform.

Something something, "I don't care if mongie wins, I just want Webtoons to lose" 😂

#tho again mongie has a lot of issues herself oof #that said she's still probably one of the least problematic out of rachel and snailords #that doesn't make her NOT problematic but you def don't see her ambushing fan groups or scamming her audience #she's got business sense and i'll give her that #now let's see if she can stick the landing >:0 #webtoon critical #lore olympus critical #let's play webtoon

§ Ok I think we all believe that this guy is the best partner ever. I literally can never- NEVER see him as a yandere character and I always find yandere shit written for him ooc.

§ Chuuya can never be considered as a red flag. He is hella understanding, respects your boundaries af, will does his best to cheer you up if he catches the slightest sign of discomfort coming from you and last but definitely not least, his loyalty has no ends.

§ This guy has suffered a lot. You only need to read the novel "Storm Bringer" to get me. Like you have no idea what amount of patience he actually has. Sure, everyone considers him as short tempered and they aren't wrong, but the case is not the same all the time.

§ TBH this dude is a literal angel (of death). Have you guys watched the CD dramas? How he cares about Akutagawa and talks to him about Dazai, telling him to take care of his health properly so that he'll be able to work on gaining his tutor's acknowledgment. Or how he asked Kenji about Kyouka about whether she was alright in the agency. Chuuya hates betrayal, but still, that didn't stop him from caring about his underling, even though she was mafia's enemy now.

§ Have you... Have you seen that fucking body of his? 🚶🏻‍♀️IDK what to tell ya all this dude is flawless. His waist, those fucking abs of his, his hand, HIS COLARBONES HELP-

§ Caring and understanding af. Yeah he might not be like Dazai, reading people's mind in a glance, but he's no dumb either. At least he gives a fuck about how other people feel =| (Yeah fuck you Dazai lmao)

§ (I'm still a Dazai simp don't get me wrong but I'm just stating some real ass facts)

§ He's no yandere or sadist. He will cherish his S/o af, and I mean this. He will shower them in compliments, gifts, affection, anything he's able to do for you.

§ MATURE AF. He will never be in a relationship unless he knows he can make time for his S/o. If he's too caught up in mafia shit then he will try to ignore his feelings and might try to keep his distance from you, regardless of how painful it might be.

§ Reference to the wan ep where he was crying over a dog movie. He loves them so much but because he's always away from home he doesn't plan on getting one.

§ The most husband/boyfriend material of all the bsd boys. Like, you don't have to worry about him manipulating you, using you to get his way, or leaving you after he got tired. He's there for you all the time, unless you don't want him to be.

§ Have you seen the amount of responsibility this guy has? Just give him one task, and he will do his best to make everything perfect. Even when the task is cooking. He will do his best or might make his underlings to be in charge of the food but still-

§ Will never harm you. In anyway. He might snap out sometimes and say some mean stuff, but he'll be feeling like shit afterwards so prepare for a hell of an apology with whatever it takes for you to forgive him. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but at least he's actually sorry =|

§ Tbh I can't see him having a breeding kink cuz as I said, he doesn't see himself in place to be ready to get a pet, let alone become a father. But if that happened? He'll be there for you and the baby.

§ BEST DAD IN THE WORLD. Thought you gotta look out for the baby cuz they might be spoiled a bit too much.

§ Loves you with his life. All he thinks about throughout the day is when he'll get home and make himself comfortable in your arms. Likes to be in charge, but there are some times when he's softer than usual and if you bring it up, he won't deny you. After the first time, he will be the little spoon half of the time, cuz he needs it and you both gotta receive love equally, right?

What to do if Durarara over

I'm going to assume you've finished the anime and have not gone into anything else Naritaverse wise

So! You can read the novels. Since they're officially licensed by yen press, you can buy the soft cover books or get them as an ebook / kindle from barnes and noble or amazon. I don't really endorse this but I'm sure if you do enough digging around you can find old, still available, free translations like anni_fiesta who did a lot of translating back in the day. Here's the link to their Index of Translation. I still use it since it's the only place I know that has the white day story translated and it's one of my favorites (For Kadota Related reasons haha), plus a couple of other side stories.

(I think the internet archives have the novels if you do some poking around but for Narita Please Write SH 5 reasons, I'll ask you to dig those up lmao)

Speaking of Side stories, Kazinha-726 translated a bunch of drrr side stories But since they haven't updated in a while, you need to change the links from kaedesan721 to their new URL kazinha-726. I'll directly link what you need here

Izaya Spin Off Translations I don't think these are officially licensed for translation so it's fine for me to link. This is the story of Izaya now that he's been forced out of Ikebukuro, and there's two books as of writing this.

Durarara Gaidens It's some gaidens, but It's also a handful of translated convos from 3 way stand of alley relay, the links use that kaedesan721 link, so while I won't be fixing all those links for you, I can at least link the tag for all of them here. you can probably find audio for this game on youtube, though I'm not sure anyone's like.... fully translated? perhaps? Which ALSO reminds me of the relay manga

Durarara Epitome of Eighteen Histories Written along side the release of season 2, we've got some stories involving Kazane Kinomiya, who's the half sister of Shinra, and a reporter. They have all 18 listed there nicely EXCEPT the Erika and Walker Link is a little messed up, and if you search through the posts you can get to it but anyway here's the link to that story specifically

DRRR x Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens Actually I haven't seen HTR or read it so I can't really tell you about this one but if you're into that series--

There's ALSO MiniDura which are little gag comics of the durarara cast in chibis! there should be 4 books as of me writing this. Godspeed on finding translations they seem to be around.... but this post is long and I'm scared of losing it so I'll update later on how many chapters there are so you don't miss any, though I'm seeing up to 10 in my cursory search.

Shizuo, Izaya, and Celty are also in uh.... Dengeki Bunko's fighting Climax, which you might be able to find some stuff on on youtube. but since it's Dengeki Bunko you also have other series... I can only remember A Certain Magical Index / A Certain Scientific Railgun / the other titles in this series as being part of it whoops.

So you've done all that, what do you do next?

Well Narita has other series, like Baccano! which had an anime before DRRR did, which is 16 episodes. Since Funimation lost the license back in like... 2012 it's not officially uh licensed for viewing anywhere, so uh. wink wink. message me if you need more help here.

There's ALSO the novels which... there are so many more than there are for drrr, also available to purchase, though these are hardcovers! Last time I checked they had.... around 20 translated? Since I'm more drrr side I'd have to ask about fan translations and if I can still find them around. But again I don't really condone it since we want more written you know?

Narita also has a couple other series, but the one that's my favorite besides DRRR is Etsusa Bridge (It's pronounced Essa Bridge don't make the same mistake I did. )

And i NEED more people to read that one please please please please

For me when I try to read 'popular' stuff or classics or something--and end up hating it--I always feel like I'M in the wrong here somehow. Like, I'm trying to intake content that will help my writing so everyone says to read the classics/stuff that gets published and it just... doesn't take. So I drop it and a year later I find it again and I'm like 'Maybe I was too harsh last time, and I'll like it this go around.' and I still don't. It's like wtf? lmao

So, my two cents. Reading something as a reader (I personally enjoy this) is different to reading something as a writer, to deconstruct it and learn from it and hone your skills.

It's not a problem to not personally like a piece of popular or classic literature. There's no moral or intellectual hierarchy to the books people like. Arguably, you don't even have to read them if you really don't want to. It's important to read things you like. However, I would personally advice against dismissing what is classic or popular entirely, just because you don't like it.

You don't have to LIKE or enjoy a piece of literature to analyse what it's doing and what the impact of the way it uses language has on the reader, or to work on understanding what the message of a story is. Or to appreciate the impact a story had in the time it came out. How successful is it in what it is trying to do? I think it can actually be quite useful to consider why you don't like certain stories, just as much as why you do. E.g. is it that certain tropes don't appeal to you? Do you prefer the more immediate fast-paced YA style? Classics are often slow burn because they're written in an entirely different context to our current world.

Also, (former literature student bias here), it is important to know what came before even if you ultimately choose to discard it in your own work. Both because there is a rich history that provides a lot of nuance, and it's not as simple as classics = good or classics = bad, and because I think you need to understand the rules to break them well. Or, given there are a lot of retellings and adaptions in modern fiction, understand and appreciate the original to best consider how it can be changed and what the effects of those changes would be.

Similarly, fanfiction and published work often improve different writing skillsets, so YES people can absolutely learn from fanfiction and it's great for things like character development and many other things. However, it usually won't teach you how to create characters, for example, or learn how to introduce readers to your world, because that work is done for you by the original text. That's why fanfic can jump right in. There's a shared understanding. Novels don't get that, so they have to approach differently. It's why my recommendation is ALWAYS to read a variety of things.

Criticism of Viv (this is a tad long and a bit disorganized, sorry):

One thing that bothers me about the whole Alastor thing (voodoo and whatnot) is that because she used real symbols, that feels like she's done enough research to see what they look like, but brushed over or didn't dig into everything else about it.

When you are unfamiliar with smth, do actual research! And also, maybe just make your own shit so you don't have to worry about this stuff lmao? Literally could've made her own symbols or smth, but nope!

I don't know much about voodoo myself, but if it is a closed religion (not saying it isn't btw, I just have absolutely no idea about it), at the very least be respectful of it and not demonize it.

I was also talking to a friend one time about the issues with how Viv portrays POC characters (especially Alastor), and they defended her with "Why does it matter if a demon is your race?" (She was white, talking to two POC folks 💀) and also "People have already ruined it and will continue to do so" like??? That should not matter lmao?

To any writers/creators/etc., just don't be ignorant, do research, and if you discover smth is funky in your story, change it and find or make a better alternative.

Exactly Anon! Like I myself a POC and to be honest, I literally thought Alastor is white until the Voodou thing. Viv is bad at art. Period. She's bad at character design, at writing, at colors. And she's the type to NOT get out of her comfort zone, leading her art to deteriorate.

Also, not surprising of Viv really. Searching about Vodou in Google only to add their symbols as spooky things to an edgy deviantart OC is par on the couse. Viv showd time and again that she only gives a fuck about something if it benefits her.

Im right now writing a novel, and the last point is important! The Internet is full of info, and as a user, you should use them on your creations indeed!

Okay so there are five main types of love languages.

Physical touch, Words of Affirmation, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Quality Time.

I would also like anyone reading this to remember that these love languages are how you want to be loved/receive love not how you show love to others.

I do think that Rasmodius is very connected to himself

And by that I mean I think he knows himself very well, or at least he thinks he knows himself very well.

And for a long time I think he probably thought that Quality Time and Physical Touch were his main two love languages.

I'll be honest, ignoring the subject and talking just about the painting, I actually think it's like fine lmao. It's boring to the point of being a snoozefest but the artist is technically skilled and besides the color choice the piece itself is so blandly inoffensive its almost insulting.

Contemporary portraiture isn't really My Thing and Jonathan Yeo (the artist) isn't exactly reinventing the portraiture wheel here but there's a lot of stuff I find interesting in the composition.

The artist has a whole faux-deep, stupid philosophy about focusing on the "presence" of his sitters, hence why everything but the face is out of focus and he seems to be resolving out of that meat void that everyone is so concerned about. I like the gesture in the abstract setting,there's some variance of texture with different brushes and some splatter technique mixed in and he clearly paid attention to the layering of pigment and optical blending. The focus on his face of the sitter to the exclusion of the uniform/trappings of office places it in contrast with both historical portraiture of monarchs where the focus is on their symbolic trappings and the contemporary focus/outrage on the royal family's ostentatious displays of wealth in a time of a national cost of living crisis. As a piece of humanizing propaganda I think it would've functioned quite well based off of that alone and I can see where he was going with it (he's just an old man! Just like your grandpa! Don't you just love him?)

I would have to get up close to see the way he did the uniform but I'm 99% sure it's all done in monochrome red. Suggesting light and shadow and folds and different materials of different colors and textures all out of shades of a single color while, again, not particularly novel does take a particular amount of skill to pull off to that level of realism.

That being said, the FUCKING BUTTERFLY is gag-inducingly kitschy and faux-sincerely twee and I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned it. It makes my fucking blood boil. Fuck that butterfly and fuck Jonathan Yeo for trying to give king whatshisface a cutsey magical girl persona and fuck that singular, out of place, ham-fisted attempt at symbolism and the horse it rode in on.

Anyway...

Official portraiture is hard because you're still beholden to both figurative accuracy and certain visual codes of stuffy, stately gravitas but there are ways to play with it. I think the Kehinde Wiley Obama portrait is a decent example of official, figuratively exacting portrayal and the artist's own visual language (of note is that Obama is also emerging out of a sort of void in that portrait too. There may be an allergy to context among portraitists?).

TLDR: I think it's an extremely boring if technically competent portrait and the color choice is unfortunate but really just not that deep.

(Totally irrelevant but I went to undergrad with the son of the owner of the gallery where it's currently being shown. The whole family is Obnoxious.)

OKAY mortarion time ….i forgot this was the book with purple prose and i had to go back in terror to make sure I didn't accidentally buy a McNeill novel again i did not, this is thankfully (?) someone else

I'm trying to figure out what about this pushes it into "Wow Edgy" rather than being genuinely compelling well actually this isn't too bad, to be honest, it's really the next bit which is that the population of ynyx (and WHAT a name) doesn't have mouths "the cold ember of his familiar, obdurate resentment" I feel like I'm being unfair to the book by feeling bathos instead of pathos but i think it's that everything is so over the top

wait what year was this written Mortarion is literally breathing in the chemicals 2019 I'm now going to suffer from the belief that the writer of this was listening to Radioactive (due to this plus some other things) and now I've got it stuck in my head

i want to take this seriously but i just can't, I'm sorry no one understands meeeeeeeee owo uncomfortable memory surfaces

i will say this, the prose is quite evocative

ok so mort has a giant chip on his shoulder and is an enormous misanthrope but just about every single person who has ever been in a position of authority over him DOES just use him as a tool

oh lovely like wow the only reason mortarion's alive is that he's a primarch the abuse is kind of getting to ridiculous angst-fic levels and yet the way it's written is genuinely compelling? probably because he's not actually a normal human so it is survivable and not ridiculous but it is kind of walking on that line thrown to starving dogs when he was a toddler like

this really is his entire life huh

annnnd also Necare experimented on him with poison what next did necare give him a dog and then kill the dog in front of him we're starting to get into bathos here

the last bit of this scene is, yeahh

The book is tap dancing on the line which is to be honest, making me sad i really want this to be good :/

if it's going to go all the way into goofy, i want it to go all the way so i can mock it if it's going to be half hard hitting and half goofy it feels like im pulling back to punch a small child this book also unfortunately has some kind of subplot on earth with a bunch of rando characters and also, unfortunately, Garro

oh this is i guess foreshadowing for what's going to happen to the death guard? so garro's friend got hit by an evil knife and unlike guilliman he did not have plot armour

so garro is working with a bunch of other dudes who defected from the traitor legions secretly working for malcador oh, and a psyker ultramarine

oh wait psyker ultramarine met garro on calth??? what??? how did he get to calth and back what is a timeline (i should be fair and stop banging on about this since i have not actually read the relevant books. at least I assume this has to be covered in a book I didn't read)

back in the present and apparently mort broods a lot in his room and if you interrupt him he yells at you because of course he does you're interrupting his linkin park listening bluejay note: i love linkin park so i am allowed to make this joke annnd typhon is setting up the navigators on the ship to take the blame oh he just killed them all that was fast and now they're all trapped blind in the warp and typhon is being obviously evil and according to keikaku which is visible to everyone but Mort well tbf to Mort, he's very angry at Typhon for killing the navigators so he's probably missing stuff

typhon: this lifeboat is full of leeches just trust me typhon: throws it overboard

back in the past, Mort successfully rescues the spunky teens but his dad is coming so he tells them to get out while they can and then has his disney princess song realization that it's time to stand up for himself and he'd do it all again! and face his dad! and dieeeee okay the last bit isn't disney princess …ah

ah mort: wait, that's an option??? rip his hair is getting in his eyes i hate when that happens

okay this is a cheesy line but it's working here

!!! YES <- hook up a generator to him he is stimming- ok so I have answered this in another ask BUT I'll go into detail in this one theres the spoiler free one, this one will be 100% spoiler

OK so.... oh my god where do I even start. there's so much I do not expect you to read this LMAO but thank you for the opportunity to talk about this

ok so it's a visual novel. and you can play six different versions of the same story (volume 1 being Asra, Nadia, and Julian, with volume 2 being Muriel, Portia, and Lucio) and honestly, volume 1 is the strongest imo THATS NOT TO SAY VOLUME 2 ISNT GOOD I just love volume 1 because it's GENUINELY just the same exact story from different perspectives whereas volume 2 takes creative liberties (especially Portias route which is sad because I love Portia as a character but her route is so disconnected from the others that I don't like it that much) ANYWAY ANYWAY enough opinions let's get into the lore (actually while I'm on the topic, based on the plot of each route? honestly the best way to play would be Nadia->Julian->Asra->Muriel->Lucio <- Portia's story is disconnected from the rest so it doesn't fit into this? (which makes sense considering she hasn't been in town as long as the others so she isn't involved in their stuff) but you kind of do need to play Julian's route beforehand if for no other reason than to get a feel for Mazelinka's character and Portia's backstory)

as far as lore. I guess I will start at the beginning, Montag Morgasson (better known as Count Lucio now) is part of a tribe known as the Scourge of the South, and his mom was the leader so he was kind of entitled, he felt like he would have power handed to him when he turned 18 but that didn't happen! his mom just cut him off. so Lucio gets mad and tries to bargain with the wyrm Vlagnagog, only to mistakenly summon demon Vlastomil as Vlagnagog has been shriveled up for a while now from not getting any sacrifices. anyway Vlastomil promises to help Lucio weaken his parents via Pestilence in exchange for their hearts. Lucios dad is bedridden and Lucio kills him, but he cannot kill Morga as she's not so easily defeated. she decides to spoil him one last time by letting him free in combat, as she cannot bear to kill her own son

AND SIDE NOTE I absolutely love seeing the naming convention of The Scourge of the South like Morga gave birth to Lucio so he is Lucio Morgasson (Morga's Son) and Morga also occasionally introduces herself as Morga Eirsdottir, assuming one of her parents was Eirs, probably her mother

ANYWAY because the deal is not fulfilled, red beetles start following Lucio around (he has a complicated relationship with beetles but I won't get into that rn) and with them, the red plague. Lucio starts doing mercenary work so all over the world this plague is happening, but Lucio doesn't seem to realize it's his fault, the beetles are following him. he just keeps making deals and not fulfilling them because he doesn't understand, when you don't uphold your end of a magical bargain, it has a way of punishing you. this will come back to bite him later and he develops a huge fear of death when he realizes he'll never be able to pay off his debt, later leading him to bargain with The Devil, but we're not there yet

where were we! Mercenary work! ok so at some point Julian left Nevivon for Prakra to study under Nazali, and he ends up on the battlefield with Lucio, as a doctor. he amputates Lucios arm. during this battle, the count of Vesuvia who he's fighting for sees this sacrifice and resolves to make him the new count iirc. so that's how he rose to power (I'll go into other character backstories here in a minute)

Lucio throws a bunch of parties and bullies local homeless kids as count, two of those being Muriel and Asra. I'll explain their deal once I'm done explaining Lucio bc he truly is the central character here, he's where all the conflict comes from. just keep that in mind

he also marries Nadia, trapping her in a hopeless marriage while he has endless affairs with the other nobles. but she doesn't care bc she doesn't even wanna be married in the first place. she's just being treated as eye candy like she has her whole life and she's resigned to her fate (SAD)

so because he's staying in the same place. he catches the Red Plague. and he tries to do this whole ritual (it's really long to explain) to get a new body, but BOOM Asra sabatoged it! he put pomegranate juice in instead of Lucios blood so the ritual would fail (the ritual was to fuse Lucio with the Devil) but now he's just stuck as this ghost goat in between dimensions

the game starts three years after this takes place, and it is your job to solve the "murder" and I think that brings me to Julian because he's a pretty important piece there

so Julian, big brother of Portia, was born to a rich family, the Devoraks, but one day the ship crashed, killing his parents, and leaving salt seals to save he and Portia's life. later, pirate Mazelinka found them and took them to Nevivon to be raised by the grandmas, a loving community of elderly salt miners and here they spent their childhood. Julian was taught how to read and write by Mazelinka's girlfriend Lilinka, and Portia felt left out. she felt left out in a lot of ways, like this and then, she wasn't even old enough to remember their parents. she's just always felt left out. anyway adding salt to the wound Julian goes off to study medicine in Prakra, leaving Portia behind once again

Julian was also working during the Red Plague, under the palace head doctor Valdemar (ooooooh don't even get me started on the courtiers or ill never shut up) he was trying to find a cure, when his Apprentice succumbed to the illness. then he also caught it, and because of his near death experience, he was visited by the Hanged Man, who revealed to him the cure to the plague was to kill Lucio. so Julian escaped the dungeon where he had been locked in to focus on his cure, and he tried to kill Lucio, but by the time he got there the room was on fire. him being there, though, gave courtiers a reason to pin the blame on him later and the ritual made everyone lose their memories so he couldn't even dispute it

OK and then Asra's parents made Lucio a metal arm when he lost his, and he locked them up for it, leaving Asra homeless. here he met Muriel, who was also homeless due to his parents giving him away to save him from a raid by the Scourge of the South. their whole childhood they lived on the docks with Lucio harassing them. now, what they didn't know was that Asras parents? they made a deal with the Devil. Lucio physically could not hurt Asra. however, Lucio would threaten Muriel to do things by claiming he would hurt Asra if he did not comply. Lucio told Asra the same thing but for Muriel, using their love for each other to control them. Muriel def got the worst of this imo, he was forced to kill people and rabid animals in gladiator battle with the stage name being the name of the tribe who killed his whole family. Asra merely had to help Lucio with magical things. Muriel kept all this a secret from Asra bc he didn't want him to feel bad

God there is so much more and thats not even scratching the surface but my fingers hurt so bad from typing so I'll have to stop 😭 thank you this was fun
