Not gonna lie, the Brenner dying scene when El didn't accept his apology didn't have any emotional impact for me cause I was too busy spending the next few moments, where he sees the pizza car driving away, imagining he was thinking 'We're all dead and dying because one of those fucking scientists decided they wanted pizza?!' and him thinking the government found them and their location cause someone ordered a pizza.

The Sky (Annabeth Chase x Jackson!Reader)
After hearing Annabeth gripe about her father for the last two years, (Y/n) had expected him to have devil horns and fangs. She had not expected him to be wearing an old-fashioned aviator’s cap and goggles. He looks so strange, with his eyes bugging out through the glasses, that she, her brother Percy, Thalia, and Zoe take a step back on the back porch. 
“Hello,” he says in a friendly voice, “Are you delivering my airplanes?”
Thalia, Zoe, Percy, and (Y/n) look at each other warily. 
“Um, no, sir,” Percy says. 
“Drat,” he says. “I need three more Sopwith Camels.”
“Right,” (Y/n) says, though she has no idea what he’s talking about. “We’re, uh, friends,” - not exactly - “of Annabeth’s.”
“Annabeth?” he straightens, as if (Y/n) had just given him an electric shock. “Is she all right? Has something happened?”
None of the demigods answer, but their faces must’ve told him that something was very wrong. He takes off his cap and goggles. He has the same sandy-colored hair as Annabeth, and intense brown eyes. He’s handsome, for an older guy, but it looks as though he hadn’t shaved in a couple of days, and his shirt is buttoned wrong, so one side of his collar sticks up higher than the other side. 
“You’d better come in,” Dr. Chase says grimly. 
The Chase’s house smells like fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies and jazz music is coming from the kitchen. It seems like a messy, happy kind of home – the kind of place that someone had lived in forever.
“Dad!” a little boy screams. “He’s taking apart my robots!”
“Bobby,” Dr. Chase calls absently, “don’t take apart your brother’s robots.”
“I’m Bobby,” the little boy protests. “He’s Matthew!”
“Mathew,” Dr. Chase calls, “don’t take apart your brother’s robots.”
“Okay, Dad!”
Dr. Chase turns to us. “We’ll go upstairs to my study. This way.”
“Honey?” a woman calls. Annabeth’s stepmother appears in the living room, wiping her hands on a dish towel. “Who are our guests?” she asks. 
“Oh,” Dr. Chase says. “This is . . .” He stares blankly at the demigods.
“Frederick,” she chides. “You forgot to ask them their names?”
The demigods introduce themselves a little uneasily, but Mrs. Chase seems nice to (Y/n). She asks if the demigods were hungry, and they admit that they were, and she lets them know she’d bring up some cookies, sandwiches, and sodas. 
“Dear,” Dr. Chase says. “They came about Annabeth?”
(Y/n) half expects Mrs. Chase to turn into a raving lunatic at the mention of her stepdaughter, but she just purses her lips and looks concerned. “All right. Go on up to the study, and I’ll bring you some food.” Her gaze rests knowingly on (Y/n), and she smiles at the daughter of Poseidon. “Nice meeting you, (Y/n). I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Upstairs, they walk into Dr. Chase’s study, and a gasp of amazement escapes from (Y/n)’s lips. 
The room is wall-to-wall books, but what really catches (Y/n)’s attention are the war models. There is a huge table with miniature tanks and soldiers fighting along a blue painted river, with hills and fake trees and stuff. Old-fashioned biplanes hang on strings from the ceiling, tilted at crazy angles like they were in the middle of a dogfight.
Dr. Chase smiles. "Yes. The Third Battle of Ypres. I'm writing a paper, you see, on the use of Sopwith Camels to strafe enemy lines. I believe they played a much greater role than they've been given credit for."
He plucks a biplane from its string and sweeps it across the battlefield, making airplane engine noises as he knocks down little German soldiers. 
(Y/n) smiles slightly, looking up at her girlfriend’s father. 
Zoe comes over and studies the battlefield. “The German lines were farther from the river.”
Dr. Chase stares at her. “How do you know that?”
"I was there," she says matter-of-factly. "Artemis wanted to show us how horrible war was, the way mortal men fight each other. And how foolish, too. The battle was a complete waste."
Dr. Chase opens his mouth in shock. “You –”
“She’s a Hunter, sir,” Thalia says. “But that’s not wy we’re here. We need –”
"You saw the Sopwith Camels?" Dr. Chase says. "How many were there? What formations did they fly?"
“Sir,” (Y/n) breaks in this time. “Annabeth, sh-she’s in danger.”
That gets his attention. He sets the biplane down.
“Of course,” he says. “Tell me everything.”
It isn’t easy, but they try. Meanwhile, the afternoon light is fading outside. 
The demigods were running out of time.
When they'd finished, Dr. Chase collapses in his leather recliner. He laces his hands. "My poor brave Annabeth. We must hurry."
"Sir, we need transportation to Mount Tamalpais," Zoe says. "And we need it immediately."
"I'll drive you. Hmm. it would be faster to fly in my Camel, but it only seats two."
"Whoa, you have an actual biplane?" Percy asks.
"Down at Crissy Field," Dr. Chase says proudly. "That's the reason I had to move here. My sponsor is a private collector with some of the finest World War I relics in the world. He let me restore the Sopwith Camel—"
Sir," (Y/n) says. "Just a car would be great. And it might be better if we went without you. It's too dangerous."
Dr. Chase frowns uncomfortably. “Now wait a minute, young lady. Annabeth is my daughter. Dangerous or not, I . . . I can’t just –”
"Snacks," Mrs. Chase announces. She pushes through the door with a tray full of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and Cokes and cookies fresh out of the oven, the chocolate chips still gooey. Thalia and Percy inhale a few cookies while Zoe says, "I can drive, sir. I'm not as young as I look. I promise not to destroy your car."
Mrs. Chase knits her eyebrows. "What's this about?"
“Annabeth is in danger,” Dr. Chase says. “On Mount Tam. I would drive them . . . but apparently it’s no place for mortals.”
It sounds to (Y/n) like it was really hard for him to get that last part out.
(Y/n) waits for Mrs. Chase to say no, but to her surprise, Mrs. Chase just nods. “Then they’d better get going.”
“Right!” Dr. Chase jumps and starts patting his pockets. “My keys . . .”
His wife sighs. "Frederick, honestly. You'd lose your head if it weren't wrapped inside your aviator hat. The keys are hanging on the peg by the front door."
“Right!” Dr. Chase says. 
Zoe and (Y/n) each grab a sandwich. “Thank you both,” Zoe says. “We should go. Now!”
The four hustle out the door and down the stairs, the Chases right behind them. 
“(Y/n)” Mrs. Chase calls as they’re leaving, “tell Annabeth . . . tell her she still has a home here, will you? Remind her of that.”
(Y/n) takes one last look at the messy living room - Annabeth’s half brothers spilling LEGOs and arguing, and the smell of cookies filling the air. Not a bad place, she thinks. 
“I’ll tell her,” (Y/n) replies, smiling slightly at her girlfriend’s stepmother. 
They run out to the yellow Volkswagen convertible parked in the driveway. The sun is going down, and (Y/n) figures they have less than an hour to save Annabeth.
. . . 
At the top of the mountain are ruins, blocks of black granite and marble as big as houses. Broken columns. Statues of bronze that look as though they’d been half melted. 
“The ruins of Mount Othrys,” Thalia whispers in awe. 
“Yes,” Zoe says. “It was not here before. This is bad.”
“What’s Mount Othrys?” Percy asks, feeling like a fool as usual.
“The mountain fortress of the Titans,” Zoe explains. “In the first war, Olympus and Othrys were the two rival capitals of the world. Othrys was –” she winces and holds her side. 
“You’re hurt,” (Y/n) says, ignoring her own possibly cracked ribs. “Let me see.”
“No!” Zoe protests. “It is nothing. I was saying... in the first war, Othrys was blasted to pieces.”
“But . . . how is it here?”
Thalia looks around cautiously as they pick their way through the rubble, past blocks of marble and broken archways. "It moves in the same way that Olympus moves. It always exists on the edges of civilization. But the fact that it is here, on this mountain, is not good."
“Why?”
"This is Atlas's mountain," Zoe says. "Where he hold s—" She freezes. Her voice is ragged with despair. "Where he used to hold up the sky."
They had reached the summit of the mountain. A few yards ahead of them, gray clouds swirl in a heavy vortex, making a funnel cloud that almost touches the mountaintop, but instead rests on the shoulders of a twelve-year-old girl with auburn hair and a tattered silvery dress: Artemis, her legs bound to the rock with celestial bronze dreams. This is what (Y/n) had seen in her dream - though it hadn't been a cavern roof that Artemis was forced to hold. 
It was the weight of the world.
"My lady!" Zoe rushes forward. 
But Artemis says, "Stop! It is a trap. You must leave now." Her voice is strained, and she is drenched in sweat. (Y/n) had never seen a goddess in pain before, but the weight of the sky is clearly too much for Artemis.
Zoe is crying. She runs forward, despite Artemis’s protests, and tugs at the chains. 
A booming voice speaks behind them: “Ah, how touching.”
They turn. 
The General is staging there in his brown suit. At his side are Luke - and half a dozen dracaenae bearing the weight of the golden sarcophagus of Kronos. 
Annabeth stands at Luke’s side - her hands cuffed behind her back, a gag in her mouth, and Luke is holding the point of his sword to her throat. 
(Y/n) meets her girlfriend’s gaze, her sword, Tsunami, still in pen form in her hand, a thousand questions running through her head. There is one message Annabeth is sending her, however: RUN!
(Y/n)’s face hardens. “Luke,” (Y/n) snarls. “Let her go.”
Luke’s smile is pale and weak. “That is the General’s decision, (Y/n). But it’s good to see you again.”
(Y/n) spats at him. 
The general chuckles. “So much for old friends. And you, Zoe. it’s been a long time. How’s my little traitor? I will enjoy killing you.”
“Do not respond,” Artemis groans. “Do not challenge him.”
“Wait a second,” Percy says. “You’re Atlas?”
The General glances at him. "So, even the stupidest of heroes can finally figure something out. Yes, I am Atlas, the general of the Titans and terror of the gods. Congratulations. I will kill you presently, as soon as I deal with this wretched girl."
“You’re not going to hurt anyone,” Percy says, and (Y/n) grunts her agreement. “We won’t let you.”
The General sneers. “You have no right to interfere, little heroes. This is a family matter.”
Percy frowns. “A family matter?”
“Yes,” Zoe says bleakly. “Atlas is my father.”
The terrible thing is: (Y/n) can see the resemblance. Atlas has the same regal expression as Zoe, the same cold proud look in his eyes that Zoe sometimes got when she was mad, though on him, it looks a thousand times more evil. The Titan was all the things (Y/n) had originally disliked about Zoe, with none of the good she’d come to appreciate in her friend. 
"Let Artemis go," Zoe demands.
Atlas walks closer to the chained goddess. "Perhaps you'd like to take the sky for her, then? Be my guest."
Zoe opens her mouth to speak, but Artemis says, "No! Do not offer, Zoe! I forbid you."
Atlas smirks. He kneels next to Artemis and tries to touch her face, but the goddess bites at him, almost taking off his fingers.
"Hoo-hoo," Atlas chuckles. "You see, daughter? Lady Artemis likes her new job. I think I will have all the Olympians take turns carrying my burden, once Lord Kronos rules again, and this is the center of our palace. It will teach those weaklings some humility."
(Y/n) looks at Annabeth. She is desperately trying to tell (Y/n) something. She motions her head towards Luke. But all (Y/n) can do is stare at her. (Y/n) hadn't noticed before, but something about her had changed. Her beautiful blond hair was now streaked with gray - but that didn’t make Annabeth look less beautiful in (Y/n)’s eyes. 
"From holding the sky," Thalia mutters, as if she'd (Y/n)’s mind. "The weight should've killed her."
"I don't understand," Percy says. "Why can't Artemis just let go of the sky?"
Atlas laughs. "How little you understand, young one. This is the point where the sky and the earth first met, where Ouranos and Gaia first brought forth their mighty children, the Titans. The sky still yearns to embrace the earth. Someone must hold it at bay, or else it would crush down upon this place, instantly flattening the mountain and everything within a hundred leagues. Once you have taken the burden, there is no escape." Atlas smiles. "Unless someone else takes it from you." He approaches the group, studying Thalia, (Y/n), and Percy. "So these are the best heroes of the age, eh? Not much of a challenge."
"Fight us," (Y/n) spits. "And let's see."
"Have the gods taught you nothing? An immortal does not fight a mere mortal directly. It is beneath our dignity. I will have Luke crush you instead."
"So you're another coward," (Y/n) snickers.
Atlas's eyes glow with hatred. With difficulty, he turns his attention to Thalia. "As for you, daughter of Zeus, it seems Luke was wrong about you."
"I wasn't wrong," Luke managed. He looked terribly weak, and he spoke every word as if it were painful. If (Y/n) didn't hate his guts so much, she almost would've felt sorry for him. "Thalia, you still can join us. Call the Ophiotaurus. It will come to you. Look!"
He waves his hand, and next to us a pool of water appears: a pond ringed in black marble, big enough for the Ophiotaurus. Percy can imagine Bessie in that pool. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more he was sure he could hear Bessie mooing.
Don't think about him! Suddenly Grover's voice is inside my mind—the empathy link. Percy could feel his emotions. He is on the verge of panic. I'm losing Bessie. Block the thoughts!
Percy tries to make his mind go blank. He tries to think about basketball players, skateboards, and the different kinds of candy in my mom's shop. Anything but Bessie.
"Thalia, call the Ophiotaurus," Luke persists. "And you will be more powerful than the gods."
"Luke . . ." Her voice is full of pain. "What happened to you?"
"Don't you remember all those times we talked? All those times we cursed the gods?
Our fathers have done nothing for us. They have no right to rule the world!"
Thalia shakes her head. "Free Annabeth. Let her go."
"If you join me," Luke promises, "it can be like old times. The three of us together. Fighting for a better world. Please, Thalia, if you don't agree . . ."His voice falters. "It's my last chance. He will use the other way if you don't agree. Please."
(Y/n) doesn’t know what he means, but the fear in his voice sounds real enough. She could believe that Luke was in danger.
His life depends on Thalia's joining his cause. And (Y/n) is afraid Thalia might believe it, too.
"Do not, Thalia," Zoe warns. "We must fight them."
Luke waves his hand again, and a fire appears. A bronze brazier, just like the one at
camp. A sacrificial flame.
"Thalia," (Y/n) mutters. "No."
Behind Luke, the golden sarcophagus begins to glow. As it did, (Y/n) sees images in the mist
all around us: black marble walls rising, the ruins becoming whole, a terrible and beautiful
palace rising around them, made of fear and shadow.
"We will raise Mount Othrys right here," Luke promises, in a voice so strained it is hardly his. "Once more, it will be stronger and greater than Olympus. Look, Thalia. We are not weak."
He points toward the ocean, and (Y/n)’s heart falls. Marching up the side of the mountain, from the beach where the Princess Andromeda was docked, is a great army. Dracaenae and
Laestrygonians, monsters and half-bloods, hellhounds, harpies, and other things (Y/n) can’t even name. The whole ship must've been emptied, because there are hundreds, many more than (Y/n) had seen on board last summer. And they are marching toward the mountain. In a few minutes, they would be there.
"This is only a taste of what is to come," Luke says "Soon we will be ready to storm Camp Half-Blood. And after that, Olympus itself. All we need is your help."
For a terrible moment, Thalia hesitates. She gazes at Luke, her eyes full of pain, as if the only thing she wants in the world is to believe him. Then she levels her spear. "You aren't Luke. I don't know you anymore."
"Yes, you do, Thalia," he pleads. "Please. Don't make me . . . Don't make him destroy you."
There is no time. If that army gets to the top of the hill, we would be overwhelmed. (Y/n) meets her girlfriend’s eyes again. Annabeth nods.
(Y/n) looks at Percy, Thalia, and Zoe, and she decides it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to die fighting with friends like this.
"Now," (Y/n) says, and together, they charge.
Thalia goes straight for Luke. The power of her shield is so great that his dragon- women bodyguards flee in a panic, dropping the golden coffin and leaving him alone. But despite his sickly appearance, Luke is still quick with his sword. He snarls like a wild animal and counterattacks. When his sword, Backbiter, met Thalia's shield, a ball of lightning erupted between them, frying the air with yellow tendrils of power.
As for (Y/n), she does the stupidest thing in her life - which is saying a lot. She attacks the Titan Lord Atlas.
He laughs as (Y/n) approaches, her sword Tsunami springing to life in her hands. A massive javelin appears in Atlas’s hands and his silk suit melts into full Greek battle armor. “Go on, then!”
“(Y/n)!” Zoe calls. “Beware!”
(Y/n) knows what Zoe is warning her about. Chiron had told her a long time ago: Immortals are constrained by ancient rules. But a hero can go anywhere, challenge anyone, as long as she has the nerve. Once (Y/n) attacked, however, Atlas would be free to attack back directly with all his might. 
(Y/n) swings her sword, but Atlas knocks her aside with the shaft of his javelin. (Y/n) flies through the air, and slams into a black wall. It isn’t Mist anymore. The palace is rising, brick by brick. It’s becoming real.
“Fool!” Atlas screams gleefully, swatting aside one of Zoe’s arrows. “Did you think, simply because you could challenge that petty war god, that you could stand up to me?” 
The mention of Ares sets a jolt through (Y/n), and, ignoring her throbbing ribs, she shakes off her daze and charges again. 
The javelin’s point slashes towards (Y/n) like a scythe. She raises Tsunami, planning to cut off the Titan’s weapon at the shaft, but her arm feels like lead. Suddenly, the sword weighs a ton. 
And then (Y/n) remembers Ares's warning, spoken on the beach in Los Angeles so long ago:
When you need it most, your sword will fail you.
Not now! (Y/n) pleads. But it is no good. She tries to dodge, but the javelin catches her in the chest and sends (Y/n) flying like a rag doll. (Y/n) slams into the ground, her head spinning. (Y/n) looks up and finds herself at the feet of Artemis, still straining under the weight of the sky.
“Run, girl,” she tells (Y/n). “You must run!”
Atlas is taking his time coming towards (Y/n). My sword is gone. It had skittered away over the edge of the cliff. It might reappear in her pocket—maybe in a few seconds—but it doesn’t matter. (Y/n) would be dead by then. Luke and Thalia are fighting like demons, lightning crackling around them. Percy is fighting the dracaenae, and Annabeth is on the ground, desperately struggling to free her hands.
“Die, little hero!” Atlas says. He raises his javelin to impale (Y/n). 
“No!” Zoe yells, and volley of silver arrows sprout from the armpit chink in Atlas’s armor. 
“ARGH!” he bellows and turns back towards his daughter. 
(Y/n) reaches down and feels Tsunami back in her pocket. She couldn’t fight Atlas, even with a sword. And then a chill goes down her back. She remembers the words of the prophecy: The Titan’s curse must one withstand. (Y/n) couldn’t hope to beat Atlas, but there is someone who might stand a chance. 
“The sky,” (Y/n) tells the goddess. “Give it to me.”
"No, girl," Artemis says. Her forehead is beaded with metallic sweat, like quicksilver. "You don't know what you're asking. It will crush you!"
"Annabeth took it!"
"She barely survived. She had the spirit of a true huntress. You will not last so long."
"I'll die anyway," (Y/n) replies. "Give me the weight of the sky!"
(Y/n) doesn’t wait for her answer. She takes out Tsunami and slashes through her chains. Then she steps next to her and braces herself on one knee—holding up her hands—and touches the cold, heavy clouds. For a moment, Artemis and (Y/n) bare the weight together. It was the heaviest thing she'd ever felt, as if (Y/n) was being crushed under a thousand trucks. She wanted to black out from the pain, but (Y/n) breathes deeply. I can do this.
Then Artemis slips out from under the burden, and (Y/n) holds it alone. 
Every muscle in (Y/n)’s body turns to fire. Her bones feel like they’re melting. She wants to scream, but she doesn’t have the strength to open her mouth. She begins to sink, lower and lower to the ground, the sky’s weight crushing her.
(Y/n) concentrates on breathing. (Y/n) thinks about Bianca, who’d given her life so they could get to this moment. If she could do that, then (Y/n) could hold the sky.
(Y/n)’s vision turns fuzzy. Everything is tinged with red. She catches glimpses of the battle, but she isn’t sure if she is seeing anything clearly. There is Atlas in full battle armor, jabbing with his javelin, laughing insanely as he fights. And Artemis, a blur of silver. She has two wicked hunting knives, each as long as her arm, and she slashes wildly at the Titan, dodging and leaping with unbelievable grace. She seems to change form as she maneuvers. She is a tiger, a gazelle, a bear, a falcon. Or perhaps that was just (Y/n)’s fevered brain. Zoe shoots arrows at her father, aiming for the chinks in his armor. He roars in pain each time one finds its mark, but they affect him like bee stings. He just gets madder and keeps fighting.
Thalia and Luke go spear on sword, lighting still flashing around them. Thalia presses Luke back with the aura of her shield. Even he is not immune to it. He retreats, wincing and growing in frustration. 
"Yield!" Thalia yells. "You never could beat me, Luke."
He bares his teeth. "Well see, my old friend."
Sweat pours down (Y/n)’s face. Her hands are slippery. Her shoulders would've screamed with agony if they could. (Y/n) feels like the vertebrae in her spine are being welded together by a blowtorch.
In her daze, (Y/n) can’t place Percy’s or Annabeth’s positions. She watches, however, as Artemis advances. The goddess was fast, but the Titan’s strength is impossible. His javelin slammed into the earth where Artemis had been a split second before, and a fissure opens in the rocks. He leaps over it and keeps pursuing her. The goddess was leading him back towards (Y/n). 
Get ready, the goddess speaks in her mind. 
(Y/n) is loosing the abulity to think through the pain in her ribs. Her responce is somthing like agggghh-owwwww.
“You fight well for a girl,” Atlas laughs. “But you are no match for me.”
He feints with teh tip of his javelin and Artemis dodges. (Y/n) sees the trick coming. Atlas’s javelin sweeps around and knocks Artemis’s legs off the ground. She falls, and Atlas brings up his javelin tip for the kill. 
"No!" Zoe screams. She leaps between her father and Artemis and shoots an arrow straight into the Titan's forehead, where it lodges like a unicorn's horn. Atlas bellows in rage. He sweeps aside his daughter with the back of his hand, sending her flying into the black rocks.
(Y/n) wasnts to shout her name, or run to her friend’s aid, but she can’t speak or move. She couldn’t even see where Zoe had landed. Then Atlas turns on Artemis with a look of triumph in his face. Artemis seems to be wounded. And she doesn’t get up. 
"The first blood in a new war," Atlas gloats. And he stabs downward.
As fast as thought, Artemis grabs his javelin shaft. It hits the earth right next to her and she pulls backward, using the javelin like a lever, kicking the Titan Lord and sending him flying over her, (Y/n) sees him coming down on top of her and she realizes what would happen. (Y/n) loosened her hold on the sky, and as Atlas slams into her, she doesn’t try to hold on. (Y/n) lets herself be pushed out of the way and she rolls.
The weight of the sky drops onto Atlas’s back, almost smashing him flat until he manages to get to his kness, strugging to get out from under the crushing weight of the sky. But it is too late. 
"Noooooo!" He bellows so hard it shakes the mountain. "Not again!"
Atlas is trapped under his old burden. (Y/n) tried to stand and fell back again, dazed from pain. Her body feels like it was burning up.
Thalia backs Luke to the edge of a cliff, but still they fought on, next to the golden coffin. Thalia has tears in her eyes. Luke has a bloody slash across his chest and his pale face glistened with sweat.
He lunges at Thalia and she slams him with her shield. Luke's sword spins out of his
hands and clatters to the rocks. Thalia puts her spear point to his throat.
For a moment, there is silence. 
“Well?” Luke asks. He tries to hide it, but (Y/n) can hear the fear in his voice. 
Thalia trembles with fury.
Behind her, Annabeth comes scrambling, finally free from her bonds. Her face is bruised and streaked with dirt. "Don't kill him!"
"He's a traitor," Thalia says. "A traitor!"
In her daze, (Y/n) realizes that Artemis is no longer with her, and Percy had taken the goddess’s place at her side. The goddess had run off toward theblack rocks where Zoe had fallen.
"We'll bring Luke back," Annabeth pleads. "To Olympus. He . . . he'll be useful."
"Is that what you want, Thalia?" Luke sneers. "To go back to Olympus in triumph? To please your dad?"
Thalia hesitats, and Luke makes a desperate grab for her spear.
"No!" Annabeth shouts. But without thinking, Thalia kicks Luke away. He looses his balance, terror on his face, and then he falls.
"Luke!" Annabeth screams.
Percy helps (Y/n) as they rush to the cliff’s edge. Below them, the army from the Princess Andromeda had stopped in amazement. They are staring at Luke’s broken from from teh rocks. Despite how much (Y/n) hated him, she couldn’t stand to see it. She wants to belive the son of Hermes is still alive, but that is impossible. The fall is at least fifty feet, and he isn’t moving.
One of the giants looks up and growls, "Kill them!"
Thalia is stiff with grief, tears streaming down her cheeks. (Y/n) pulls her back as a wave of javelins sail over their heads. They run for the rocks, ignoring the curses and threats of Atlas as they pass.
"Artemis!" Percy yells.
The goddess looks up, her face almost as grief-stricken as Thalia's. Zoe lies in the goddess's arms. She is breathing. Her eyes are open. But still . . .
"The wound is poisoned," Artemis says.
"Atlas poisoned her?" Percy asks.
"No," the goddess says. "Not Atlas."
Artemis shows them the wound in Zoe’s side. (Y/n) had almost forgotten her scrape with Ladon the dragon. The bite is so much worse than Zoe had let on. (Y/n) can barely look at the wound. Zoe had charged into battle against her father with a horrible cut already sapping her strengh. 
(Y/n) feels a hand lacing through her’s. She glances over to find Annabeth standing beside her. 
“The stars,” Zoe murmurs. “I cannot see them.”
“Nectar and ambrosia,” Percy says. “Come one. We have to get her some.”
No one moves. Grief hangs in the air. Even Artemis is too shocked to stir. The demigods may have met their doom right there, but then (Y/n) hears a strang buzzing noise. 
Just as the army of monsters come over the hill, a Sopwith Camel swoops down out of the sky. 
“Get away from my daugther!” Dr. Chase calls down, and his machine guns burst to life, peppering the groud with bullet holes and startling the whole group of monsters into scattering.
“Dad?” yells Annabeth in disbelief.
“Run!” he calls back, his voice growing fainter as the biplane swoops by. 
This shakes Artemis out of her grief. She stares up at teh antique plane, which is now coming back for another strafe. 
"A brave man," Artemis says with grudging approval. "Come, We must get Zoe away from here." She raises her hunting horn to her lips, and its clear sound echoes down the valleys of Marin. Zoe's eyes are fluttering.
"Hang in there!" Percy tells her. "It'll be all right!"
The Sopwith Camel swoops down again. A few giants threw javelins, and one flew straight between the wings of the plane, but the machine guns blazed. I realized with amazement that somehow Dr. Chase must've gotten hold of celestial bronze to fashion his bullets. The first row of snake women wailed as the machine gun's volley blew them into sulfurous yellow powder.
"That's . . . my dad!" Annabeth says in amazement.
They don’t have time to admire his flying. The giants and snake women are already recovering from their surprise. Dr. Chase would be in trouble soon.
Just then, the moonlight brights, and a silver chariot appears from the sky, drawn by the most beautiful deer (Y/n) had ever seen. It lands right next to them.
"Get in," Artemis says.
Annabeth helps (Y/n) get Thalia on board, and Percy helps Artemis with Zoe. They wrap
Zoe in a blanket as Artemis pulls the reins and the chariot sped away from the mountain,
straight into the air.
"Like Santa Claus's sleigh," (Y/n) murmurs, still dazed with pain.
Artemis takes time to look back at her. "Indeed, young half-blood. And where do you think that legend came from?"
Seeing them safely away, Dr. Chase turns his biplane and follows like an honor guard. It must have been one of the strangest sights ever, even for the Bay Area: a silver flying chariot pulled by deer, escorted by a Sopwith Camel.
Behind them, the army of Kronos roars in anger as they gather on the summit of Mount Tamalpais, but the loudest sound is the voice of Atlas, bellowing curses against the gods as he struggles under the weight of the sky.

Annabeth and (Y/n) fly along side by side on the back of the pegasai. 
“Your dad seems cool,” (Y/n) tells Annabeth. 
It was too dark to see her girlfriend’s expression. She looks back, though California is far behind them now. 
“I guess so,” Annabeth replies. “We’ve been arguing for so many years.”
“Mhmm,” (Y/n) hums. “You mentioned that.”
“You think I was lying about that?” It sounds like a challenge to (Y/n), but a pretty half-hearted one, like she is asking it of herself.
"I didn't say you were lying. It's just . . . he seems okay. Your stepmom, too. Maybe they've, uh, gotten cooler since you saw them last."
She hesitates. "They're still in San Francisco, Percy. I can't live so far from camp."
(Y/n) doesn’t want to ask her next question. She is scared to know the answer. But I asks it anyway. "So what are you going to do now?"
They fly over a town, an island of lights in the middle of the dark. It whisks by so fast they might've been in an airplane.
"I don't know," she admits. "But thank you for rescuing me."
"Hey, you’re my girlfriend. I would go through Tartarus to rescue you."
"You didn't believe I was dead?"
"Never."
She hesitates. "Neither is Luke, you know. I mean . . . he isn't dead."
(Y/n) stares at her. She doesn’t know if Annabeth is cracking under the stress or what. "Annabeth, that fall was pretty bad. There's no way —"
"He isn't dead," she insistas. "I know it. The same way you knew about me."

Not shockingly tall but definitely passess as older than he is due to his height
Jacked for a teenager too due to his training
Him and Tim became instant besties and it didn't take long for them to start seeing eachother as brothers.Stephanie was more difficult but purely because Mathew was worried she was only trying to date Tim to hurt him and/or get at Batman
When Stephanie was Robin,that was when they became friends and he mourned her death almost as much as Tim did.He was VERY shocked when Gotham ressurected her and she showed up at Wayne Manor to greet him with a huge grin and a bear hug and he asked lots of questions through his tears of happiness
He came in when Summer was still (begrudingly) Sparks and was an influence on his current personality with his positivity.He made semi-regular apperances on Ember's Ashes and is considered an honorary Superfam member by Supergirls
Was the one who made Cass discover goth subculture and he thinks she's literally the coolest person ever(and i mean,yeah,he right).She thinks pretty positively of him in turn
Babs was the one to come up with the 'Batboy' name,as a joke but Mathew loved it so much that it stuck
Was lowkey intimidated by Jason pre-Rhato but went to join him after a fight with Bruce that really shook him and now they're eachother's favorite brothers along with Duke

Eventually,she gets so entangled in the Batfam that Dick takes her under his (Night)wing and gave her her title as a reference to how much she reminded him of Mathew.No official teams for her until Rhato but she has semi-official partners in Summer and Mathew and has had several teamups with the Wonderfam
His verse's Rhato is not that shitshow in canon but my own version of it-It still started in 2011 but the lineup is instead Jason,Eddie and Rose as the original trinity and Summer and them as the Dark Core Four and Pepper(@moonage-gaydream)as their Greta with the other members being(in order of when they join),Thad,Imani(@honeypotsworld),Kyle,Mathew,Lilith and Daisy(@insomniac-jay),Artemis and Venus(@insomniac-jay)!!

Squash's Book Roundup 2023
Last year I read 67 books. This year my goal was 70, but I very quickly passed that, so in total I read 92 books this year. Honestly I have no idea how I did it, it just sort of happened. My other goal was to read an equal amount of fiction and nonfiction this year (usually fiction dominates), and I was successful in that as well. Another goal which I didn’t have at the outset but which kind of organically happened after the first month or so of reading was that I wanted to read mostly strange/experimental/transgressive/unusual fiction. My nonfiction choices were just whatever looked interesting or cool, but I also organically developed a goal of reading a wider spread of subjects/genres of nonfiction. A lot of the books I read this year were books I’d never heard of, but stumbled across at work. Also, finally more than 1/3 of what I read was published in the 21st century.

~Some number factoids~ I read 46 fiction and 46 nonfiction. One book, The Fifth Wound by Aurora Mattia, is fictionalized/embellished autobiography, so it could go half in each category if we wanted to do that, but I put it in the fiction category. I tried to read as large a variety of nonfiction subjects/genres as I could. A lot of the nonfiction I read has overlapping subjects, so I’ve chosen to sort by the one that seems the most overarching. By subject, I read: 5 art history/criticism, 5 biographies, 1 black studies, 1 drug memoir, 2 essay collections, 2 history, 2 Latin American studies, 4 literary criticism, 1 music history, 2 mythology/religion, 1 nature, 4 political science, 2 psychology, 5 queer studies, 2 science, 1 sociology, 1 travel, 2 true crime, 3 urban planning. I also read more queer books in general (fiction and nonfiction) than I have in years, coming in at 20 books.

~Superlatives and Thoughts~
I read so many books this year I’m going to do a runner-up for each superlative category.
Favorite book: This is such a hard question this year. I think I gave out more five-star ratings on Goodreads this year than I ever have before. The books that got 5 stars from me this year were A Simple Story: The Last Malambo by Leila Guerriero, Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher, The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko, The Mustache by Emmanuel Carriere, The Passion According to GH by Clarice Lispector, trans girl suicide museum by Hannah Baer, The Fifth Wound by Aurora Mattia, Mammother by Zachary Schomburg, and Blackouts by Justin Torres. But I think my favorite book of the year was The Fifth Wound by Aurora Mattia. It is an embellished, fictionalized biography of the author’s life, chronicling a breakup that occurred just before she began her transition, and then a variety of emotional events afterward and her renewal of a connection with that person after a number of years had passed. The writing style is beautiful, extremely decadent, and sits in a sort of venn diagram of poetry, theory, fantasy and biography. My coworker who recommended this book to me said no one she’d recommended it to had finished it because they found it so weird. I read the first 14 pages very slowly because I didn’t exactly know what the book was doing, but I quickly fell completely in love with the imagery and the formatting style and the literary and religious references that have been worked into the book both as touchstones for biography and as vehicles for fantasy. There is a video I remember first seeing years ago, in which a beautiful pinkish corn snake slithers along a hoop that is part of a hanging mobile made of driftwood and macrame and white beads and prism crystals. This was the image that was in the back of my head the entire time I was reading The Fifth Wound, because it matched the decadence and the strangeness and the crystalline beauty of the language and visuals in the book. It is a pretty intense book, absolutely packed with images and emotion and ideas and preserved vignettes where reality and fantasy and theory overlap. It’s one of those books that’s hard to describe because it’s so full. It’s dense not in that the words or ideas are hard to understand, but in that it’s overflowing with imagery and feelings, and it feels like an overflowing treasure chest. Runner-up:The Mustache by Emmanuel Carriere. However, this book wins for a different superlative, so I’ve written more about it there.
Least favorite book: Querelle de Roberval by Kevin Lambert. I wrote a whole long review of it. In summary, Lambert’s book takes its name from Querelle de Brest, a novel by Jean Genet, and is apparently meant to be an homage to Genet’s work. Unfortunately, Lambert seems to misunderstand or ignore all the important aspects of Genet’s work that make it so compelling, and instead twists certain motifs Genet uses as symbols of love or transcendence into meaningless or negative connotations. He also attempts to use Genet’s mechanic of inserting the author into the narrative and allowing the author to have questionable or conflicting morals in order to emphasize certain aspects of the characters or narrative, except he does so too late in the game and ends up just completely undermining everything he writes. This book made me feel insulted on behalf of Jean Genet and all the philosophical thought he put into his work. Runner-up: What We See When We Read by Peter Mendelsund. This graphic designer claims that when people read they don’t actually imagine what characters look like and can’t conjure up an image in their head when asked something like “What does Jane Eyre look like to you?” Unfortunately, there’s nothing scientific in the book to back this up and it’s mostly “I” statements, so it’s more like “What Peter Mendelsund Sees (Or Doesn’t See) When He Reads”. It’s written in what seems to be an attempt to mimic Marshall McLuhan’s style in The Medium Is The Massage, but it isn’t done very well. I spent most of my time reading this book thinking This does not reflect my experience when I read novels so I think really it’s just a bad book written by someone who maybe has some level of aphantasia or maybe is a visual but not literary person, and who assumes everyone else experiences the same thing when they read. (Another runner-up would be The Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, but I think that’s a given because it’s an awful piece of revisionist, racist trash, so I won’t write a whole thing about it. I can if someone wants me to.)
Most surprising/unexpected book: The Mustache by Emmanuel Carriere. This book absolutely wins for most surprising. However, I don’t want to say too much about it because the biggest surprise is the end. It was the most shocking, most unexpected and bizarre endings to a novel I’ve read in a long time, and I absolutely loved it. It was weird from the start and it just kept getting weirder. The unnamed narrator decides, as a joke, to shave off the moustache he’s had for his entire adult life. When his wife doesn’t react, he assumes that she’s escalating their already-established tradition of little pranks between each other. But then their mutual friends say nothing about the change, and neither do his coworkers, and he starts spiral into confusion and paranoia. I don’t want to spoil anything else because this book absolutely blew me away with its weirdness and its existential dread and anyone who likes weird books should read it. Runner-up: Morvern Callar by Alan Warner. I don’t even know what compelled me to open this book at work, but I’m glad I did. The book opens on Christmas, where the main character, Morvern, discovers her boyfriend dead by suicide on the kitchen floor of their flat. Instead of calling the police or her family, she takes a shower, gets her things and leaves for work. Her narrative style is strange, simultaneously very detached and extremely emotional, but emotional in an abstract way, in which descriptions and words come out stilted or strangely constructed. The book becomes a narrative of Morvern’s attempts to find solitude and happiness, from the wilderness of Scotland to late night raves and beaches in an unnamed Mediterranean city. The entire book is scaffolded by a built-in playlist. Morvern’s narrative is punctuated throughout by accounts of exactly what she’s listening to on her Walkman. The narrative style and the playlist and the bizarre behavior of the main character were not at all what I was expecting when I opened the book, but I read the entire book in about 3 hours and I was captivated the whole time. If you like the Trainspotting series of books, I would recommend this one for sure.
Most fun book: The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko. This book was amazing. It was like reading an adventure novel and a thriller and a book on conservationism all wrapped into one and it was clearly very passionately written and it was a blast. I picked it up because I was pricing it at work and I read the captions on one of the photo inserts, which intrigued me, so I read the first page, and then I couldn’t stop. The two main narratives in the book are the history of the Grand Canyon (more specifically the damming of the Colorado River) and the story of a Grand Canyon river guide called Kenton Grua, who decided with two of his river guide friends to break the world record for fastest boat ride down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The book is thoroughly researched, and reaches back to the first written record of the canyon, then charts the history of the canyon and the river up to 1983 when Grua made his attempt to race down the river, and then the aftermath and what has happened to everyone in the years since. All of the historical figures as well as the “current” figures of 1983 come to life, and are passionately portrayed. It’s a genuine adventure of a book, and I highly recommend it. Runner-up: Summer Fun by Jeanne Thornton. It asks “What if Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was actually a trans woman?” Actually, that’s not quite it. It asks “What if a trans woman living in poverty in southwest America believed to an almost spiritual level that Brian Wilson was a trans woman?” The main character and narrator, Gala, is convinced that the lead singer of her favorite band, the Get Happies, (a fictional but fairly obvious parallel to the Beach Boys) is a trans woman. Half the book is her writing out her version of the singer’s life history, and the other half is her life working at a hostel in Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, where she meets a woman who forces her out of her comfort zone and encourages her to face certain aspects of her self and identity and her connection with others. It’s a weird novel, and definitely not for everyone, but it’s fun. I was reading it on the train home and I was so into it that I missed my stop and had to get off at the next station and wait 20 minutes for the train going back the other way.
Book that taught me the most: Breath: The new science of a lost art by James Nestor. In it, Nestor explores why humans as a general population are so bad at breathing properly. He interviews scientists and alternative/traditional health experts, archaeologists, historians and religious scholars. He uses himself as a guinea pig to experiment with different breathing techniques from ancient meditation styles to essentially overdosing on oxygen in a lab-controlled environment to literally plugging his nose shut to only mouth-breathe for two weeks (and then vice-versa with nose breathing). It was interesting to see a bunch of different theories a laid out together regarding what kind of breathing is best, as well as various theories on the history of human physiology and why breathing is hard. Some of it is scientific, some pseudoscience, some just ancient meditation techniques, but he takes a crack at them all. What was kind of cool is that he tries every theory and experiment with equal enthusiasm and doesn’t really seem to favor any one method. Since he’s experimenting on himself, a lot of it is about the effects the experiments had on him specifically and his experiences with different types of breathing. His major emphasis/takeaway is that focusing on breathing and learning to change the ways in which we breathe will be beneficial in the long run (and that we should all breath through our noses more). While I don’t think changing how you breathe is a cure-all (some of the pseudoscience he looks at in this book claims so) I certainly agree that learning how to breath better is a positive goal. Runner-up: The Sober Truth by Lance Dodes. I say runner-up because a lot of the content of the book is things that I had sort of vague assumptions about based on my knowledge of addiction and AA and mental illness in general. But Dodes put into words and illustrated with numbers and anecdotes and case studies what I just kind of had a vague feeling about. It was cool to see AA so thoroughly debunked by an actual psychiatrist and in such a methodical way, since my skepticism about it has mostly been based on the experiences of people I know in real life, anecdotes I’ve read online, or musicians/writers/etc I’m a fan of that went through it and were negatively affected.
Most interesting/thought provoking book: Mammother by Zachary Schomburg. The biggest reason this book was so interesting is because the little world in which it exists is so strange and yet so utterly complete. In a town called Pie Time (where birds don’t exist and the main form of work is at the beer-and-cigarettes factory) a young boy called Mano who has been living his childhood as a girl decides that he is now a man and that it’s time for him to grow up. As this happens, the town is struck by an affliction called God’s Finger. People die seemingly out of nowhere, from a hole in their chest, and some object comes out of the hole. Mano collects the things that come out of these holes, and literally holds them in order to love them, but the more he collects, the bigger he becomes as he adds objects to his body. A capitalist business called XO shows up, trying to convince the people of Pie Time that they can protect themselves from God’s Finger with a number of enterprises, and starts to slowly take over the town. But Mano doesn’t believe death is something that should be run from. This book is so pretty, and the symbolism/metaphors, even when obvious, feel as though they belong organically in the world. A quote on the back of the book says it is “as nearly complete a world as can be”, and I think that’s a very accurate description. The story is interesting, the characters are compelling, and the magical realist world in which the story exists is fascinating. Runner up: trans girl suicide museum by Hannah Baer. This is a series of essays taken (for the most part) from Baer’s blog posts. They span a chunk of time in which she writes her thoughts and musings on her experience transition and transgender existence in general. It is mostly a series of pieces reflecting on “early” stages of transition. But I thought it was really cool to see an intellectual and somewhat philosophical take on transition, written by someone who has only been publicly out for a few years, and therefore is looking at certain experiences with a fresh gaze. As the title suggests, a lot of the book is a bit sad, but it’s not all doom and gloom. A lot of the emphasis is on the important of community when it comes to the experience of starting to transition and the first few years, and the importance of community on the trans experience in general. I really liked reading Hannah Baer’s thoughts as a queer intellectual who was writing about this stuff as she experienced it (or not too long after) rather than writing about the experience of early transition years and years down the line. It meant the writing was very sharp and the emotion was clear and not clouded by nostalgia.
Other thoughts/commentary on books I don’t have superlatives for:
I’m glad my first (full) book read in 2023 was A Simple Story: The Last Malambo by Leila Guierrero. It’s a small, compact gem of a book that follows the winner of an Argentinian dance competition. The Malambo is a traditional dance, and the competition is very fierce, and once someone wins, they can never compete again. The author follows the runner-up of the previous year, who has come to compete again. It paints a vivid picture of the history of the dance, the culture of the competition, and the character of the dancer the author has chosen to follow. It’s very narrowly focused, which makes it really compelling.
The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington could have easily won for most fun or most interesting book. Carrington was a surrealist writer and painter (and was in a relationship with Max Ernst until she was institutionalized and he was deported by the Nazis). In The Hearing Trumpet, an elderly woman called Marian is forced by her family to go live in an old ladies’ home. The first strange thing about the place is that all of the little cabins each woman lives in is shaped like some odd object, like an iron, or ice cream, or a rabbit. The other old women at the institution are a mixed bag, and the warden of the place is hostile. Marian starts to suspect that there are secrets, and even witchcraft involved, and she and a few of the other ladies start to try and unravel the occult mysteries hidden in the grounds of the home. The whole book is fun and strange, and the ending is an extremely entertaining display of feminist occult surrealism.
Sacred Sex: Erotica writings from the religions of the world by Robert Bates was a book I had to read for research for my debunking of Withdrawn Traces. It was really very interesting, but it was also hilarious to read because maybe 5% of any of the texts included were actually erotic. It should have been called “romantic writings from the religions of the world” because so little of the writing had anything to do with sex, even in a more metaphorical sense.
Every time I read Yukio Mishima I’m reminded how much I love his style. The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea almost usurped The Temple of the Golden Pavilion as my favorite Mishima novel. I’m fascinated with the way that Mishima uses his characters to explore the circumstance of having very intense feelings or reactions towards something and simultaneously wanting to experience that, while also wanting to have complete control and not feel them at all. There’s a scene in this novel where Noboru and his friends brutally kill and dissect a cat; it’s an intense and vividly rendered scene, made all the more intense by Noboru desperately conflicted between feeling affected by the killing and wanting to force himself to feel nothing. The amazing subtle theme running through the book is the difference between Noboru’s intense emotions and his desire/struggle to control them and subdue them versus Ryuji’s more subtle emotion that grows through the book despite his natural reserve. I love endings like the one in this book, where it “cuts to black” and you don’t actually see the final act, it’s simply implied.
In 2016 or 2017, I ran lights for a showcase for the drama department at UPS (I can’t remember now what it was) that included a bunch of scenes from various plays. I remember a segment from Hir by Taylor Mac, and a scene from The Aliens by Annie Baker. In the scene that I saw, one of the characters describes how when he was a boy, he couldn’t stop saying the word ladder, and the monologue culminates in a full paragraph that is just the word “ladder.” I can’t remember who was acting in the one that I saw at UPS, but that monologue blew me away, the way that one word repeated 127 conveyed so much. This year a collection of Annie Baker’s plays came in at work so I sat down and read the whole play and it was just incredible. I’d love to see the full play live, it’s absolutely captivating.
Narrow Rooms by James Purdy was a total diamond in the rough. It takes place in Appalachia, in perhaps the 1950s although it’s somewhat hard to tell. It follows the strange gay entanglement between four adult men in their 20s, who have known each other all their lives. It traces threads of bizarre codependency, and the lines crossed between love and hate. The main character, Sidney, has just returned home after serving a sentence for manslaughter. On his return, he finds that an old lover has been rendered disabled in an accident, and that an old school rival/object of obsession has been waiting for him. This rival, nicknamed “The Renderer” because of an old family occupation, has been watching Sidney all their lives. Both of them hate the other, but know that they’re destined to meet in some way. Caught in the middle of their strange relationship are Gareth, Sidney’s now-disabled former lover, and Brian, a young man who thinks he’s in love with The Renderer. The writing style took me some time to get used to, as it is written as though by someone who has taught themselves, or has only had basic classes on fiction writing. But the plot itself is so strange and the characters are so stilted in their own internality that it actually fits really well. Like The Mustache, this book had one of the strangest, most intensely visceral and shocking endings I’ve read in a while. It was also “one that got away.” I read it at work, then put it on my staff picks shelf, and only realized after someone else bought it that I should have kept it for myself.
The Passion According to G.H. by Clarice Lispector blew my mind. I really don’t want to spoil any of it, but I highly encourage anyone who hasn’t read it to do. The build in tension is perfect and last 30 pages are just incredible. Lispector’s style is so unique and so beautiful and tosses out huge existential questions like it’s nothing, and I love her work so much.
Moscow To The End Of The Line by Venedikt Erofeev was another really unexpected book. It’s extremely Russian (obviously) and really fun until suddenly it isn’t. The main character, a drunkard, gets on a train from Moscow to Petushki, the town at the end of the line (hence the title), in order to see his lover. On the way, he befriends the other people in his train car and they all steadily get drunker and drunker, until he falls asleep and misses his stop. Very Russian, somewhat strange, and I was surprised that it was written in the late 60s and not the 30s.
Dr. Rat by William Kotzwinkle was what I expected. Weird in a goofy way, a bit silly even when it’s serious, and rather heavy-handed satire. The titular Dr Rat is a rat who has spent his whole life in a laboratory and has gone insane. The other animals who are being tested on want to escape, but he’s convinced that all the testing is for the good of science and wants to thwart their rebellion. Unfortunately, all the other animals who are victims of human cruelty/callousness/invasion/deforestation/etc around the world are also planning to rebel, connection with each other through a sort of psychic television network. It’s a very heavy-handed environmentalist/anti-animal cruelty metaphor and general societal satire, but it’s silly and fun too.
Confessions Of A Part-Time Lady by Minette is a self-published, nearly impossible to find book that came into my work. It’s self-printed and bound, and was published in the 70s. It is the autobiographical narrative of a trans woman who did drag and burlesque and theatre work all across the midwest, as well as New York and San Francisco, from the 1930s up to the late 60s. It was originally a series of interviews by the two editors, who published it in narrative form, and it includes photos from Minette’s personal collection. It’s an amazing story, and a glimpse into a really unique time period of gender performance and queer life. She even mentions Sylvia Rivera, specifically when talking about gay activism. She talks about how the original group of the Gay Liberation Front was an eclectic mix of all sorts of people of all sexualities and genders and expressions. Then when the Gay Activists Alliance “took over”, they started pushing out people who were queer in a more transgressive or unusual way and there was more encouragement on being more heteronormative. She mentions Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson, saying “I remember Sylvia Rivera who founded STAR – Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. She was always trying to say things – the same kinds of things Marsha P Johnson says in a sweeter way – and they treated her like garbage. If that’s what ‘order’ is, haven’t we had enough?”
Whores For Gloria by William T Vollmann was exactly as amazing as I thought it would be. I love Vollmann’s style, because you can tell that even though the characters he’s writing about are characters, they’re absolutely based on people that he met or saw or spoke to in real life. The main character, Jimmy, is searching for his former lover, Gloria, who has either died or left him (it is unclear for most of the novel). He begins to use tokens bought from sex workers (hair, clothes, etc) to attempt to conjure her into reality, and when that doesn’t work, he pays them to tell him stories from their lives, and through their lives he tries to conjure Gloria. This novel’s ending had extremely similar vibes to the ending of Moscow To The End Of The Line.
Prisoner Of Love by Jean Genet was a lot to take in. It was weird reading it at this moment in time, and completely unplanned. It’s just that I have only a few more books to read before I’ve made my way through all Genet’s works that have been translated into English, and it was next on the list. Most of the book focuses on Genet’s time spent in Palestine in the 70s and his short return in the 80s. He also discusses the time he spent with the Black Panthers in the US, although it’s not the main subject of the book. Viewing Palestine from the point of view of Genet’s weird philosophical and moral worldview was really interesting, because what he chooses to spend time looking at or talking about is probably not what most would focus on, and because even his most political discussions are tinged with the uniquely Genet-style spirituality (if you can call it that? I don’t know what to call it) that is so much the exact opposite of objective. It’s definitely not a book about Palestine I would recommend reading without also having a grasp of Genet’s style of looking at the world and his various obsessions and preoccupations, because they really do inform a lot of his commentary. It was also written 15 years after his first trip to Palestine, partly from memory and partly from journal entries/notes, which gives it a sort of weirdly dreamlike quality much like his novels.
Blackouts by Justin Torres was so amazing! It blends real life and fiction together so well that I didn’t even realize that most of the people he references in the novel are real historical figures until he mentioned Ben Reitman, who I recognized as the Chicago King Of The Hobos and Emma Goldman’s lover. The book follows an unnamed narrator who has come to a hotel or apartment in the southwest in order to care for a dying elderly man called Juan Gay. Juan has a book called Sex Variants, a study of homosexuality from the 1940s which has been censored and blacked out. Back and forth, the narrator and Juan trade stories. The narrator tells his life story up until the present, including his first meeting with Juan in a mental hospital as a teenager. In turn, Juan tells the story of the Sex Variants book and its creator, Jan Gay (Ben Reitman’s real life daughter). The book explores the reliability of narrative, the power of collecting and documenting life stories, and of removing or changing things in order to create new or different narratives.
Again, Clarice Lispector rocking my world! Generally I can read a 200-ish page novel in somewhere between 2 and 4 hours depending on the content/writing style. Near To The Wild Heart took me 9 hours to read because I kept wanting to stop and reread entire paragraphs because they were so interesting or pretty or philosophical. The story focuses on Joana, whose strange way of looking at the world and going through life makes everyone sort of wary of her. This book is so layered I don’t really know how to describe it. So much of it is philosophical or existential musings through the vehicle of Joana. Unsurprisingly, it’s a beautiful book and I highly recommend it.
I’m just going to copy/paste my Goodreads review for Skye Papers by Jamika Ajalon: This book had so much potential that just…fell short. I could tell that it was written for an American audience but the way the reader/Skye is “taught” certain British terms and/or slang felt a bit patronizing. The characters were fleshed out and interesting and I liked them a lot but the plot crumbled quickly in the last half of the book Things sped up to a degree that felt strange and unnatural, the book’s pacing was inconsistent throughout. Perhaps that was deliberate considering the reveal at the climax, but if it was, it should have been utilized better. If the inconsistent pacing wasn’t deliberate, then it just made the book feel strange to read. There were moments were I felt like there should have been more fleshing out of certain character relationships. Even with the reveal at the end and the explanation of Pieces’ erratic/avoidant behavior, I wish there had been more fleshing out of the relationship or friendship between her and Skye at the beginning, when Skye first arrives in London. Characters who seemed cool/interesting got glossed over and instead there was a lot more dwelling on Skye walking around or busking or just hanging out. I could have gone without the last 30 or so pages after the big reveal, where Skye went back through everything that happened with the knowledge she (and the reader) had gained. It dragged on and on and at that point I felt like the whole story was so contrived that I just wasn’t interested anymore. A friend who read this book before I did said she thought it was an experimental novel that just hadn’t gone far enough, and I completely agree with her. I think if the style with the film script interludes went further, into printed visuals or more weirdness with the interludes, more experimental style with the main story, or something, it would have been really good. It just didn’t push hard enough.
The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson was a fun little true crime novel about a young flautist who broke into a small English natural history museum in 2009 and stole hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of preserved rare bird skins dating back to the 19th century. He was a salmon fly-tying enthusiast and prodigy, and old Victorian fly designs used feathers of rare birds. The book first goes through the heist and the judicial proceedings, then examines the niche culture of Victorian fly-tying enthusiasts and obsessives, and then chronicles the author’s attempts to track down some of the missing birds. It was a quick, easy read, but fun and an unusual subject and I quite enjoyed it.
In 2024 I don’t plan on trying to surpass or even reach this year’s number. I’m going to start off the year reading The Recognitions by William Gaddis, then I’m going to re-read a number of books that I come across at work or in conversation and think Huh, I should reread that one of these days. So far, the books I am currently planning to reread: Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey, As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, The People Of Paper by Salvador Plascencia, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The Mustache by Emmanuel Carriere, McGlue by Otessa Moshfegh, Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugene O’Neil, Acid Snow by Larry Mitchell, and Nightwood by Djuna Barnes.

Summary:
Annabeth, Conner, and Travis plan on going home for the holidays, but Annabeth dreads having to face her parents and their opinions on her relationships, work, and just life in general. She intends on getting someone to go with her for the trip to pretend to be her boyfriend so she won’t have to suffer all Christmas vacation listening to her parents complain. That’s when she meets Percy…
-Chapter 10-
Annabeth wakes up to the sun shining through her window. Her and Percy are tangled up with eachother. She slowly gets up and puts an oversized shirt on. Then she lays back down beside him and shakes him awake.
“Happy Christmas Eve” she says smiling
“Happy Christmas Eve wise girl” he leans down and kisses her. She pulls away and scrunches her nose.
“Go brush your teeth.” She says. She gets up and goes to her suitcase. She bends down to pick out clothes and heads the bathroom door close.
She waits for him to get out of the bathroom then goes in there herself. She showers and brushes her teeth, then does her hair.
Annabeth puts on ripped jeans with the same red knitted sweater she wore before.
When she exits the bathroom she goes and sits beside Percy on the bed. She reaches over and grabs his hand
“You ok?” He says looking over at her
“Yeah, just preparing myself for a whole day of Susan” she says laughing and standing back up. She goes and stands right in front of him.
“I’ll be there with you all day. I promise” he says standing up too and wrapping his arms around her.
“Thank you” she smiles into his chest. “We should probably go down there” she says stepping back.
“No, one more minute” he says stepping towards her again and pulling her against him.
“Okay minutes up” she says after a moment.
Then he leans down and captures her lips in his. Her hands burry into his hair.
“No Percy we have to go downstairs” she laughs as she pulls back
His lips trail down her jawline. “But I don’t wanna” he says kissing her ear.
“But we have to” she says gently shoving him away playfully.
“Fine.” He says defeated.
She grabs his hand and heads to the door. He jerks her towards him.
“One more” he says. And presses another kiss to her lips.
He finnally releases her and follows her downstairs. She sees Susan and her dad making pancakes and Bobby and Mathew are sitting at the table.
“Morning” Mathew says as they walk in.
“Good morning” Annabeth says happily sitting down at the table. Percy takes the seat next to her.
“How’d you two sleep” Bobby says winking
“Oh shut up Bobby” Annabeth says blushing
“We slept good” Percy says laughing
Bobby continues talking to Susan about whatever they were talking about before Percy and Annabeth came in.
Annabeth sips her coffee. She feels Percy’s hand trail its way up her thigh. She quickly grabs his hand and puts it in his own lap, silently giggling.
“Pancakes are ready” Annabeth’s dad says. Percy gets up.
When Annabeth starts to get up he says “I’ll get yours, stay right there” and walks to the counter.
He comes back with two plates. She begins to pour syrup on hers and then hands it to Percy. She start eating and looks over. Percy is quite literally drowning his pancakes in syrup.
“How do you even eat it like that?” She says laughing.
“What? It gives it more flavor” he smiles.
Annabeth rolls her eyes but doesn’t comment anymore.
“So what are the plans for today?” Annabeth asks her dad
“I think we’re all going to watch a movie together. As a family. We haven’t done that in a while” her dad says
“Watched a movie? Or be a family?” Mathew says.
Annabeth takes a sip of her coffee to hide her laugh. Percy isn’t even paying attention. He’s stuffing his face full of pancakes.
“Dude slow down” Annabeth says giggling at him
“These are some of the best pancakes I’ve ever had Mrs. Chase” he says looking at Susan.
“Thank you Percy.” She says with satisfaction in her voice.
They finish eating with no arguments and they all go into the living room and sit in their spots. Annabeth and Percy sit on the corner of the sectional. Bobby sits on the end and Mathew sprawls out on the other end. And Susan and Annabeth’s dad sit on the other couch.
Her dad puts a movie in that Annabeth has never heard of and sits back down. About fifteen minutes in Annabeth starts to get up.
“Where are you going?” Percy asks
“Bathroom.” She lies.
She goes into the kitchen and leans against the counter. Sitting there with everyone reminded her too much of her childhood. Before her mom had died, her dad, mom and her had always watched movies late at night.
And then after her dad got with Susan they always tried to do things as a family. But it just never worked.
She doesn’t know how long she sits there but she feels a tear escape her eye.
“Hey what’s wrong?” Percy says walking into the kitchen
“I don’t even know” Annabeth says, quickly wiping her tear away.
“Come here” Percy says reaching for her.
She relaxes into his arms.
“It’s ok, you can talk to me” he says into her hair.
“Just sitting there reminded me too much of when I was little.” She says against his chest.
Percy pulls back and wipes another tear from her cheek and presses a kiss to her temple.
“It’ll be okay” he says hugging her again. “We don’t have to go back in there if you don’t want to”
“No it’s fine um, you go ahead I’ll be in there in a second.” She says pulling back.
“You sure?” He says
“Yes seeweed brain.” She laughs
She watches him walk out and then leans against the counter again, trying to gather herself. Eventually she goes and grabs a blanket from the closet by the door. Then goes into the living room and settles back into the couch.
Percy wraps her up in his arms and cuddles her.
“Thank you” she whispers.
“Anytime wise girl” he says in her ear, and kisses her temple again.
Eventually the movie ends and Annabeth gets up to actually use the bathroom this time. She goes up to her bathroom so that someone else can use the downstairs ones. She shuts the door behind her and does her business.
When she exits Percy is waiting for her. He wraps her in another hug.
“What’s this for” she says into his chest
“Fun” he says smiling into her hair.
They go back downstairs and sit on the couch again. By that time it’s already noon so she texts Conner to see what he’s doing
Conner: eating lunch with fam. Wby
Annabeth: just watched a movie. I think we’re abt to watch another one. Idk tho.
Conner: fun. Call if you need anything
Percy wraps his hands around her waist.
“I love you chase” he whispers in her ear
“I love you too Jackson” she whispers back. She pulls back enough to press her lips to his. His fingers trace her jawline.
“Eww, can y’all do that somewhere else” Bobby says from the end of the couch.
“Shut up Bobby” Annabeth blushes, embarrassed
She sinks back into Percy’s side. Under the blanket she puts her hand under his shirt and rubs his abs. Her dad comes back into the living room and puts another movie on.
This time Annabeth doesn’t really pay attention to the movie. She pays more attention to the man she lying with.
She looks up and smiles up him. Her eyes search his. She stares into his sea green eyes for what feels like an eternity.
“Pay attention to the movie” he chuckles.
She turns her attention to the movie. But still all she can think about is his touch. The way his breathing is even with hers.
She must’ve fallen asleep because the next thing she remembers is Percy shaking her awake.
“Hey wake up” he says.
“No im tired” she says closing her eyes again
“The movies over” he says
“I don’t care leave me alone.” She says
“You’re so cute” Percy says pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“Mhm” she says sleepily.
“It’s only 3 in the afternoon Beth” he says
“Beth?” She says opening her eyes
“What it’s a cute nickname” he says laughing at her expression
“Don’t ever call me that again” she says grumpily
“Beth” he says teasing her
“Can you two shut up” Mathew says from the kitchen.
“You shut up Matt” Annabeth yells
“Someone’s grumpy” Percy says running a hand down her back.
“No im just tired” she says leaning into his touch.
“Go back to sleep then” he says
“No cause then your gonna be all creepy and watch me sleep” she says. “And then when I wake up your gonna make fun of me again”
“Well would you rather me leave you here by yourself on the couch” he says chuckling
“No” she says pouting
“Exactly” he says satisfied.
“But now I’m too awake and I can’t go back to sleep” she say sitting up.
“Aw man, I really enjoyed being creepy and watching you sleep” Percy says laughing
“Oh shut up” she says gently shoving his arm
“So now what are we gonna do” he says pulling her back down against him.
“I don’t know” she says
“Why don’t we just stay like this for a bit” he says rubbing her arm.
“Okay I guess that wouldn’t be too bad.” Annabeth says softly.
Annabeth turns her head so that she’s looking up at him. He places a soft kiss on her nose.
“You look so cute when you’re sleepy” he says brushing a hair from her face.
“Why thank you kind sir” she says giggling.
He trails a hand up her waist and she wiggles away from his touch.
“Well, is Annabeth chase ticklish” he says laughing.
“No” she says
“Are you sure about that” he says.
“Yes. Percy I swear to god if you want to keep that hand attached to your body you should make sure to keep it to yourself.” Annabeth says trying to be serious
“I don’t think so” he says reaching back down to tickle her.
“Percy stop” she laughs hysterically
She grabs his hand and pins it underneath him.
“That was kinda hot” he says
“Oh shut up” she says blushing and letting go of his hand.
She leans down to kiss him hard. Then pulls back and gets up off the couch.
She goes into the kitchen to see what everyone’s doing. Her brothers are playing uno and Susan and her dad are cooking something.
Annabeth sits down at the table and watches her bothers play. Percy comes and stands right behind her.
He comes and puts both his hand on her shoulders. Annabeth looks up to see him and he places an upside down kiss to her lips.
“Ew gross” Bobby says
“Shut it” Annabeth says again
“Make me” he says
“Bobby we’re not kids anymore stop being immature” she says rolling her eyes
“Your the one that’s being gross” he says
Annabeth pushes down the feeling of sticking her toungue out at him and just ignores him.
Percy sits beside her and she leans her head against him. “I think we should make it our life’s goal to gross them out” she whispers
She can feel Percy smile against her hair.
“Whoever grosses them out the most wins” he whispers into her ear.
“Deal” she smiles into his shoulder.
“Can we play?” Annabeth says turning back to her brothers.
They deal them cards the next round and they play.
“Plus two Bobby” Annabeth says.
“Are you kidding me” he complains grabbing two cards from the deck.
Eventually the food is ready and they all sit and eat.
Annabeth can tell that Percy is trying to be overly touchy during dinner but it has no affects towards her brothers. He doesn’t know what grosses them out.
After dinner they go back into the living room and turn on another movie.
Annabeth lays down on Percy’s chest. She looks up at him and kisses him. His mouth moves against hers. His fingers grip into her hair.
“Gross stop it” Mathew says
Annabeth breaks apart from Percy and whispers “one point for me”
Percy chuckles but doesn’t argue. They continue watching the movie.
After the movie Percy grabs Annabeth’s hand and leads her upstairs. He presses her up against the hallway wall and kisses her.
They sit there for what feels like an eternity. They hear footsteps coming up the stairs.
“Do y’all have to do that right in front of my room?” Bobby says pretending to gag
“One point for me” Percy whispers.
Annabeth rolls her eyes.
“I’m tired, I’m going to bed” she says going into their room
Percy follows her in. She changes into an oversized t-shirt and a pair of old shorts.
She lays down in bed and feels Percy lay down too.
“It’s tied” he says pulling her close.
“I know. But I’m gonna win” Annabeth says
Annabeth falls asleep that night thinking about all of the stolen kisses from that day.
