Black Romance Is A Black Only Space
Tumblr media
This shouldn't be controversial. This should be something that the book community as a whole should just be widely accepted. Yet, when it comes to Black spaces, it's always met by non-Black people (especially white people) with incredulity. How dare we Black folks have a space just for us? How dare we exclude them.
Yet, when Black people try to create diversity in a traditionally white space we are told "We are told that we should make our own spaces." But when we do, white people feel entitled to the spaces we make.
The moral of the story is that we can't win.
The fact of this matter is clear: Black romance is Black only space. You can READ Black romance and I do encourage you to do so. One of the best ways to support Black people is by giving us money. Especially since there happens to be a hefty pay gap between white and Black authors. See the #publishingpaidme scandal.
However, no matter how hard you research. No matter what primary sources you read, you will never understand the history, the culture, the pain, the trauma, and the joy of being Black. To be blunt: You have to live that shit. Research will never replace lived experiences.
And before you get up in feelings about this: I'm not that you can't write Black side characters or write interracial romances with Black main characters. Although, I do have some hard feelings about white people writing from the point of view of Black characters. However, that is MY opinion and it's nowhere near a consensus opinion among Black people.
The Black Community or The Black Communities because the Black Disapora is vast and varied we are not a monoloith.
But you can't write 2 or more Black main characters falling in love. Well, you can, but YOU SHOULDN'T. When you do this you are actively taking space from Black authors in a publishing industry that according to 2019 Lees and Low's study is 76% WHITE. You are inserting into a Black only space for your own profit and gain.
If you can't accept this criticism or this boundary from Black people. And believe me, this is part is A CONSENSUS OPINION among Black people. Then you have zero right to be here in this space and I certainly don't want to you to write Black representation. As always, when Black people are asking for representation. We are not telling you to write our stories. Black people are MORE THAN CAPABLE to write our own stories.
This is basically a clear-cut case of cultural appropriation but in book form.
Again, you can write interracial romance with a Black love interest. I have zero problems with what personally as long as you do it respectfully and you get a Black sensitivity reader. But I need non-Black folks (including people of color) to back off Black romance.

Part 4: Books by Black Authors to Read
Dread Nation #1 Dread Nation Justina Ireland Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn…

book review || Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley
video review ||
~Thanks to Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of Fake It Till You Bake It in exchange for an honest review. ~
Okay, so this was a good month for fake dating books because I also liked how this book handled the trope! That being said though, this wasn’t as great as I was hoping.
I love a good cooking setting romance, but the pacing of this was all over the place and the plot was... weird.
This started off strong, with a meet-ugly between Jada and Donovan. Initially, I really was thinking Donovan would be my preferred POV, but Jada ended up growing on me. She felt very personable and I could certainly relate to her speaking before you think issue as well as her fear of failure and disappointing her loved ones. The message about how women are portrayed in media was well done and the handling of her dyslexia was as well. I think overall, Jada had a strong character arc and was probably the most well-written character in the book. On the other hand, Donovan was charming in the beginning but I felt as though his personality slowly waned as the book progressed. And god, the possessiveness that comes out of nowhere and was so unwarranted! On top of that, his side plot felt very low stakes given that he could lose his company.
The attraction between these two was instant, but I didn’t feel like there was enough chemistry to back it up. They bickered a lot (sometimes sounding more like teenagers than adults) and only had a few serious conversations where I felt that a relationship was actually blossoming. Two chili peppers for the smut scene.
Side characters should have been more built up by the end, especially if there is going to be a sequel, and the last-minute conflict was so unnecessary. It lasted a single chapter. And then, of course, the required couple drama that also lasted a chapter. Why can’t we, as a book community, move past this? Instead of making them break up for a single chapter (that apparently was a three-month period?), the last-minute conflict could have been stretched out and the couple could have worked together to find a solution! In the process, they could see how committed they are and what they truly mean to one another! That would have been much more interesting.
I think this was an easy, quick romance read, but unfortunately, didn’t stand out.

Happy book birthday to Lore of the Wilds by Analeigh Sbrana!
Ana's not on Tumblr, so I'm doing the celebration for her 💖🥳
If you like:
-🍄 cottage core -✨ fairy core -📚 light/dark academia vibes -🌈 a diverse cast of all Black LGBTQIA+ characters -💘 romance -🧝🏾‍♀️ the idea of being kidnapped by a fairy prince to tidy up his cursed/enchanted library and coming into your own magical powers as a result, then Lore of the Wilds might just be for you!
Full disclosure: I worked on this book as a proofreader before it got picked up by Harper Collins, and I loved every minute of it. I kept forgetting I was supposed to be working and reading ahead. I scheduled a week to finish reading it and did it in 3 days, and the only reason it took so long was that I had to actually pause and work on it 😅
Tumblr media
Lore of the Wilds is available now in ebook, audio, paperback, and hardback from most book retailers. Check out the Harper Collins links to find a retailer close to you!
Please consider checking out Lore. It's a stunning world with an amazing cast, and Ana deserves every bit of success after she fought so hard to get her all Black fairytale past the hurdles of mainstream publishing.

grant morrison being in the danger days music videos is the funniest thing to me. because gerard way really said “hey can we get my comic book writer hero to be in this video and play the sexy bad guy” and grant was like hell yes
but. but then Sing. literally has a shot of grant pinning gerard against the wall and caressing his chin with the end of a gun, before they smirk and pull the trigger. gerard literally go-directed and planned these videos. they, at some point, had to sit down with grant and be like “okay here’s the plan” and grant just rolled with it
i think gerard had some fantasies to live out there

Rereading my favorite books of 2023 and this one might be the top (I’m pretty sure I recc’d it here before but it’s never too much when Janelle and Rome are concerned)
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things about black authors is the vernacular they use just feels so familiar it’s so easy to immediately get lost in the world. It’s fun and playful instead of proper and stiff. It feels like it could be my own inner monologue.

Like even the smut scenes feel more realistic
