Deidara, sitting in between Sasori and Tobi: G-guys … I’m not so sure about this …

Sasori: Brat. You’ve been begging to see this movie for weeks.

Deidara: Yeah but, I didn’t realize … I mean after reading the reviews I didn’t know how scary it’s supposed to be …

Tobi: You’ll be okay, Senpai! Tobi and Sasori-san are right here, and we won’t let the scary things get ya! Okay?

Deidara, taking a deep breath: Okay …

*later, coming out of the theater*

Sasori: Well, I’ll hand it to you, Deidara … that WAS fairly frightening. But I’m proud of you for getting through it.

Deidara: *wraps himself around Sasori’s arm* Couldn’t have done it without that helping hand you gave me, Danna ~

Sasori: … huh?

Deidara: You know, hm … *lowers his voice* I wish you could be that romantically adventurous all the time, but I’ll admit that you doing it so quietly, in the dark, with everyone around us but nobody aware of what we were doing … that was the biggest turn-on of my life ~

Sasori:

Hidan: My Jashin, stop whining, old man. Look, me and blondie and red-eyes will pool our money and get something for us all the share. So stop your bitchin’, alright?!

*Kakuzu sighs as the others buy four drinks and one jumbo popcorn for them all to share*

Kakuzu, as they’re walking to fill up their drinks at the soda dispenser: I won’t even ask how much this was. Next time, I’m not letting you talk me out of bringing my big bag. We’ll sneak in the entire kitchen before I let you spend money like this again. We — Kakuzu: *suddenly slips on an ice cube on the floor and slides into the wall, banging his head* *Deidara and Itachi rush to him to help him up, and Hidan brings over a manager* Hidan, to manager: What the fuck is this shit?! You guys don’t clean up these areas or what?? My friend could have seriously hurt himself!! We should call our lawyer and —

Deidara, eating nachos: This is great, hm! We got so much free food!

Itachi, opening his third box of candy: Not to mention free movie tickets for the next few weeks!

Deidara: Looks like he’s taking a nap …

Itachi: Hidan, wake him up. I think I read somewhere that it’s not safe to go to sleep with a possible concussion …

1) Three non-romantic duos: Hmmm...brotps I adore would be Jack and Daniel (SG-1), Sam and Daniel (SG-1), and Lune and Matsen (Jade Torch -- is it cheating to use my own book??? xD) If that's cheating, then Sam and Frodo (LotR).

2) A ship that might surprise others: I kinda ship Link x Mipha from BOTW. I like Zelda x Link too, but something about Link x Mipha is just so sweet and tragic. I like that they knew each other for a lot longer than Zelda and Link knew each other.

Let's be real. I don't have a lot of crazy ships. Although, in SG-1, I do ship Vala x Tomin (but I also like Vala x Daniel).

3) Last Song: Shackleton by Adam Young

4) Last Film: My parents and I watched Hitched for the Holidays last night. Very funny romcom with Joey Lawrence. It's a Hallmark movie from 2012, so just before they all got so unbelievably cookie cutter/copy+paste with their plots.

#i am in a massive stargate phase right now #i almost put john and rodney as the third brotp but i wanted to include something non stargate #and seriously. i am enjoying the x-files SO MUCH!!!!!!!!#the alien episodes are my favorite and i wish there were more of those and fewer of the ghost/spirit ones #but oh well #and can i say? mulder and scully's dynamic is perfection #not just how they trust each other or tease each other but how they physically behave with one another #the acting choices seem very deliberate #mulder wears his heart on his sleeve and i am living for that #and he's big on touch. not in a creepy way at all #but he's constantly putting his hand on her shoulder or gently placing his hand on her back to steer her #so much of it is 100% unnecessary for the scene so it feels like very deliberate acting choice regarding the character #and it doesn't phase scully a bit #even in the first few episodes when they've only known each other a few months or less she has no issue with how familiar mulder acts #again. i need to emphasize---it never comes across as creepy just really cute and tender #i really really like how she is SO TINY compared to him and i think his physicality and protectiveness is emphasized by that #but at the same time he knows she's fully capable #he seems protective of her but not in a demeaning way. not overprotective. just lots of chivalry and honor #that's something that seems totally lost in media today: men who want to protect women just because that's what they should be doing #and women who let them #too many women get bent out of shape when men try to be gentlemen #women have tried to wipe out chivalry and then they turn around and complain about toxic masculinity 🙄#but mulder is a wonderful gentleman and i love watching him and scully #tagged #sorry for going off in the tags but i've been wanting to rave about this stuff for a few days now xD

Propaganda for Camold (Under the cut for length):

The evil version of goldami. They perfectly enable the worst in each other. In Cami, Gold has someone he can follow mindlessly, the one and only thing he has done throughout his life. At the same time, she's his saviour, the one who pulled him out of the shadow world with her magic and let him taste the real world, at least for just some time. He's completely devoted to her. In Gold, Cami has someone "just like her" (an unfeeling peon, what she pretends to be) who she knows for sure will never abandon her or leave her alone (literally, he's always standing next to her) she doesn't need to work on herself, show herself, heal, or any of the sort. She also has someone who will let her play out her deepest controlling tendencies and will do everything she wants exactly how she wants it. They're fucked up.

they're one of those couples were everyone knows they're a couple except for them. they're OBLIVIOUSSSS to their own feelings and the fact they look like a couple (they don't know what couples do). gold is always following cami like a lap dog. he loves the human world so he's always showing her stuff excitedly and sharing his food. cami only trusts gold to rely villain work on, she thinks he's the only capable one and the only one who sees her vision of how stuff should be done. they GET each other like no one else, they don't even have to talk. they do NOT get social cues though, they're both extremely confused together. also the amadeus camp is their special place 💚🤍 artistic rendition of a normal day with these two (Submitted by chocottang).

These two swing between being mean to each other and being super sweet at the drop of a hat. Bonnie always annoys her with his inability to read the room and yet she's so protective of him. Cuties...

There's a quote (I don't remember when it's said) where someone tells Lucy she reminds them of Lisanna. And Ik it was meant to talk about how close Lucy is to Natsu but I always thought the two were pretty similar personality wise. So I think Lucy fitting in well with the Strauss Siblings makes a lot of sense :)

Elfman actually had a hard time warming up to Lucy because of how much she reminded him of his dead sister.

Mirajane on the other hand, used that as an excuse to get closer to Lucy. She filled the void of a younger sister for Mira.

Lucy is an honorary Strauss. Invited to family dinners and everything

Mirajane plays the big sister role to Lucy big time. Tho Mira's way of showing love is a little more intense

Lisanna and Lucy max out their little shit energy when together and it's usually targeted at Natsu. That poor guy has learned to live in fear of the two girls

Elfman is also not safe. One time they switched all this 'manly' clothes for pink tutus. (he wore them just to publicly embarrass the girls)

Lucy is almost always hanging around Mira. She spends most of her time at the bar chatting with her (She goes to Mira for advice a lot but Mira's advice is usually pretty bad XD)

For some reason Lucy's tab keeps getting cleared before she can pay it. The Strauss girls claim they have no idea what's happening but when Lucy tries to hand them money they just laugh and ignore her.

Lucy is the only one in the group that is capable of feeling shame. Which means that they embarrass her in public all the time. Lisanna pretends it's Lucy's birthday to get free food, Mirajane shows off Lucy's skimpy photoshoot pics to everyone she can, Elfman screams about how manly she is causing people to stare at her

I think what gets lost amid the Viren-Callum and Callum-Claudia parallels is while sometimes you have characters foil each other primarily because of narrative placement (Rayla and Soren in some ways, switching roles as sworn killer to protector and then back again), you can also have characters that parallel each other primarily personality wise (Ezran and Claudia for example), and characters that parallel each other morality wise (Rayla and Harrow) and then you can also have characters that parallel each other in all of the above. Narrative placement, roles, personality, morality, flaws, etc. All of it.

And that is what I’m talking about when I talk about how Callum’s morality differs from his friends. Ezran does not have the capacity to be a dark mage. At most, he could be like Terry, and even then, that’s a stretch. He does not crave power. Opportunity and justice, which are adjacent to power, but not power itself. It is out of character for Ezran to revel the destruction and upper hand that power gives him. It is not for Callum.

Rayla, although she has personality similarities with Viren (paranoia, gruffness, repression, etc) and narrative similarities with Claudia (daughter given dark task by father, wandering Xadia for two years on account of Viren, etc) does not have the capacity to be a dark mage. It’s not in her; she doesn’t have the incentive or personality for it (or for magic generally). She craves protection, which is of course adjacent to power, but not power itself. It was out of character for Rayla to walk away from the dragon in 4x05, indicating a massive character change for her from 2x07; Callum’s choice in each situation would remain the same.

In 4x06, upon finding Soren’s armour, everyone else is focused on Soren. Rayla is beating herself up for letting something happen to him. N’than is being brutally honest. Ezran is trying to mitigate harm and look on the bright side for their friend. Callum does not take his eyes off of, and is entirely focused on, Rayla. Yes, he’s optimistic about what may have happened to Soren, but that’s specifically presented in him reassuring Rayla (and then again in 4x07 as well).

Callum craves power (and freedom). He craves magic. He has a strong heart and a strong mind just like his friends, but he’s also a mage in ways that even Claudia is not. Claudia can look at ancient ruins and never wonder how to use them. She’s brutal out of perceived necessity. Callum is brutal even when he doesn’t need to be. Callum learns about moon magic and, like every magical object he’s encountered, he wants to learn how to use it. Just knowing is not enough.

Viren and Callum are both people willing to do “anything” to protect their family, even if Viren’s more complicated because he’s also more willing to sacrifice them, and Callum is not (with perhaps the sole exception of letting Ez be under the ice for a dangerously long time). This is especially highlighted in S4, textually. Ezran and Rayla are both willing to sacrifice precious items connected to their fathers. Callum (at least for now) is not.

Callum is genuinely tempted down the path of being a dark mage when he thinks he has no other magical options. He rejects it still holding onto hope, perhaps, that he can be a primal mage. And like I’ve already said, Rayla and Ezran would not have been tempted into it at all. Claudia isn’t either because she doesn’t see anything wrong with dark magic in the first place. But Callum does. In this way, Callum’s pursuit of magic has the most in common with Viren’s, where he knows it’s dangerous, and knows it may not always end well (“I have nothing left to lose”) and yet he chooses it and Aaravos anyway. Callum also has a self-preservation streak that Viren, Rayla, and Ezran do not (at least marginally). He rarely throws himself into anything in which he has zero hope for survival; even when he takes Ez’s spot in 1x02, he still argues with Rayla on behalf on his own life; he easily is talked down by one word from Rayla when it comes to letting Sol Regem burn him to a crisp in 3x01. (Compare and contrast with how Rayla argues with him for her own death in 3x08, or how Viren places his life in Aaravos’ hands in Lux Aurea.)

And yet in spite of how much the show emphasizes just how much he loves magic, and loves using magic (“figure out how he could use the cube” and what he could “achieve” with it, S2 novelization), it also shows us time and time again that the people he loves - namely Rayla and Ezran - are even more important to him than magic.

[Cue Callum dropping his staff - “It means a lot” - to pick up Rayla’s sword only to then throw that away, too, when he sees her hand to run right at her]

And even over his freedom and well-being:

C: I was his puppet. I felt so weak and out of control. I’m not afraid that he’ll hurt me. I’m afraid that he’ll use me to do awful things. Or hurt people I care about. That’s why all I’m asking is that if he takes control of me again, you have to kill me. I need you to promise.

Among the trio, Callum is the one with a more skewed morality and greater capacity for remorseless violence. He’s the one with a raging and then ice cold temper. He’s the one who has the most in common personality and morality wise with Viren and Claudia and even Terry. Not entirely the same, of course - there’s a reason he’s not on their side - but the most similar, I think.

And I think that’s why 1) Callum is such a fascinating character, especially for a protagonist and 2) disappointing sometimes, when people take away his claws and teeth. Because he absolutely has them, and I hope we can only continue to see them play out even further as we go along.
