I'm just gonna say something, Bar/Bat/B'nai mitzvahs are a celebration, they often but not always come with an after party and depending on the means of the parents of the lucky 13 year old they can be over the top sometimes. Much like rich kids with sweet 16s or Quinceañera.
okay thats out of the way, what I wanted to say is, I'm SICK of every media depiction of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah as a 100 million dollar, biggest party on the planet celebration of conspicuous consumption. Almost ALWAYS missing the you know Bar Mitzvah itself, and again depicting Jews over and over again as INSANELY wealthy. Like not everyone, hell not MOST people's Bar Mitzvah was huge and expensive.
another thing, I know by definition no 13 year old is cool, by definition they are greasy and annoying and cringe. But EVERY depiction of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah where the boy or girl of the hour is both an awkward loser and (particularly the boys) sleazy little creeps who are trying WAY too hard to impressive with their garishly massive (and expensive) party (and how often they quote how much something costs as if a 13 year old would know or care) it just seem a little close to the old antisemitic stereotype of Jews as crass and uncouth social climbers desperately trying to use their money to buy their way into classy society and forever failing.

In 1950, 13 year old Holocaust survivor Yisrael Meir celebrated his bar mitzvah as an orphan (his parents were murdered by the Nazis). 73 years later, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau (the former Chief Rabbi of Israel) stood beside 13 year old Ariel Zohar -an orphan whose parents were murdered on October 7th- as he marked his Bar Mitzvah. Two orphans, two heroes, two links in a long chain of Jewish survival and triumph over darkness.

some appreciation for how in at least one of the B'nei Mitzvot DJ Schumely calls up the B'nei Mitzvah (generally accepted gender-neutral version of Bar or Bat Mitzvah) meaning that child is probably non-binary and this synagogue and DJ are accepting of that
I was pretty worried for diversity in this show cause Adam Sandler's past movies tend to at least have a ton of microagressions, but this was pretty good about it. like actual representation of POC and Queer Jews

Jewish culture is being salty because your parasha piece for your bnei mitzvah was from Leviticus, while your sister got it from like one of the coolest books, Exodus
(as a side note, at least my bit wasn’t just reading a bunch of rules. I got 10:1-11— Nadav and Avihu just getting smited and Aharon not being allowed to mourn, it was… a little intense)
real, coming up with a speech about my parasha was so hard 😭 but apparently I delivered it well!

Jewish Damian Wayne thoughts
Ok gentile here
I'm trying to get back into writing fic and I'm working on a DamiJon fic featuring Jewish Damian.
Like, there are so many amazing possibilities for this! At some point in living with Bruce (who's canonically ethnically Jewish but was not raised Jewish) he decides to go to Sabot service one week. He ends up really liking it and going every week (or as many as possible) until he decides to get serious about being Jewish. Ra's would probably disown him for not bowing to him and valuing God above him. Good riddance if you ask them.
Eventually he would have a bar mitzvah (which would be a huge event because Wayne) and the entire Batfamily would be there. I guess Superman would keep an eye on Gotham for a bit?
Bruce, Alfred, Dick, Cass, Tim, Steph, Duke and Kate are all invited of course. (Jon and Lois too, a shame Clark couldn't make it)
Jason and Talia have to get creative. Talia is probably crouched in the rafters somewhere. Jason is security.
Mara al Ghul (Damian's cousin) might be hiding in the shadows somewhere. Who knows, does she love him? Does she hate him? Bruce's old friend from boarding school Oliver Queen is invited. Minhkhoa Khan somehow managed to get invited. Harley Quin and Poison Ivy are there, invited or not, cheering loudly. Cassandra asked to invite one of her model friends, Kori Anders. No one can stand to say no to Cass, not even Damian.
Everyone got very drunk at the party and Bruce did take Khoa home. He does not regret it. He does wish he remembered it. Barbra did not drink a drop, knowing she'd have to remove embarrassing pictures and videos from the internet. (If she keeps a little bit for blackmail no one would blame her. That shit was gold)
Damian doesn't care as long as no one gets murdered nothing gets set on fire and he gets to have one day where nothing goes wrong. He has way more fun than he expected.

Told my husband that no matter what I only want one kid. Ever. He responded by asking me what I’d do if we ended up with twins.
We all know the only natural solution is to get them both swords for their Bar/t Mitzvah and let the best man win

You know how I’m Teen Titans (2016) Bruce didn’t do anything for Damian’s 13th birthday? Feel if writers brought Nyssa back she’d be appalled and fuming.
(For those of you who didn’t know in death and the maidens Nyssa is Jewish and a holocaust surivior)

Bezalel Acamemy of Magic: the Israeli Wizarding School
Just one Jewish Potterhead's ideas.
Tumblr media
It is named for the ancient Jewish mystic, Rabbi Judah Loew Ben Bezalel. In the Potterverse he'd be a straight up wizard, like Nicholas Flammel.
Those funky abstract Jerusalem paintings? The castle actually looks like that.
Golems guard the castle grounds
During Hanukkah the great hall is filled with floating menorahs
And the dreidel game is played with leprechaun gelt, that vanishes on its own when you lose a round
The House dybbuks are even bigger pests than Hogwarts' House ghosts, because they can possess students and teachers and make them do something embarassing like the Spider-Man emo dance through the halls. (On the other hand, demonic possession is a legit excuse for getting out of detention for hexing your classmates.)
In the kitchens, meat and dairy food products are enchanted to avoid getting near each other
Metamorphmagi have the most fun on Purim
Pumpkin hamentashen!
On Passover, the Afikomen is wrapped in an invisibility cloak
When a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is held at the castle, the birthday kid's chair levitates
There are cats all over the castle. Lounging on the golems, sitting on your homework.

This is heartbreaking and had me in tears!
This 13 year old boy, Itai Carmel,  celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Tel Hashomer Hospital next to his brother who is critically wounded from the war in Gaza.
Look at this heroic boy, standing in front of dozens of people, reading his speech and asking everyone to pray for the healing of his older brother, Aviad Haim.
Refuah Shleima!
