Movement Project - Artist Research, Q Hayashida
Q Hayashida is a Japanese manga creator known for her works such as Dorohedoro and Dai Dark.
In one of her rare interviews, Hayashida reveals that she is a mixed media artist who uses whatever media she ‘feels like in the moment.’
The chaotic, sketchy, raw and colourful look to her art works harmoniously as she depicts her gory and dark but funny stories.
Tumblr media
I love her usage of gouache, watercolour, ink and pen, majority of the time mixing these media together in the same piece creating a layered texture reminiscent of grime, reflecting the apocalyptic settings often found in Hayashida’s manga. Matching her colours, line weight and compositions to fit each scene and its tone is highly impressive and a source of inspiration for myself since I first read her work Dorohedoro many months ago.
Her character design is also equally interesting. Dorohedoro’s cast including the protagonist, Kaiman, a man with a lizard head searching for the sorcerer who cursed him, mypersonal favourite being Jonson, a giant realistic cockroach and plenty others, diverse, well-written and designed human characters. I can’t forget the monsters, each with unique personalities highlighted by their designs, brilliantly adding to the horror aspect of her works.
Lastly, my favourite technique Q Hayashida uses to instil discomfort, is her use of repetition and massive spaces, infinite crowds of monsters showing the viewer how powerlessness feels and drawing giant empty settings, such as a department store where the protagonists are stuck in devoid of all life, which perfectly matched the unease the characters she wrote were feeling.

****** Here are some user listening instructions to enhance your experience and maximize the benefits:
1. **Background Listening:** Let the affirmations play in the background during your daily activities. Whether you're working, exercising, or doing household chores, allow the positive messages to permeate your surroundings. The subconscious mind is receptive, even when you're not actively focusing on the affirmations.
2. **Meditation Mode:** Set aside a few minutes each day for a dedicated meditation session. Find a quiet and comfortable space, play the affirmations, and focus on your breath. Let the positive words guide you into a state of calm and mindfulness, reinforcing the affirmations at a deeper level.
3. **Interactive Affirming:** Engage with the affirmations actively by repeating them aloud or in your mind. Use the video as a guide and affirm along with the positive statements. This participatory approach can strengthen the impact of the affirmations as you internalize them consciously.
4. **Loop for Maximum Benefit:** The affirmations in this video loop three times for maximum effectiveness. Feel free to let the video replay or manually loop it to extend your listening experience. Repetition is a key factor in affirmations' efficacy, reinforcing positive beliefs and intentions.
Remember, consistency is key. Choose the listening style that resonates most with you, and make these affirmations a regular part of your routine. Whether in the background, during meditation, or actively affirming, these positive messages are designed to uplift and empower you on your journey. Enjoy the transformative experience! 🌟

Artist Research: Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work combines sculpture, painting, textiles, illustration and performances art.
Her quilting works which she refers to as ‘story quilts’ were the pieces I found to be most interesting. The quilts depict important moments throughout the artist’s life. ‘Tar Beach’ is based on Ringgold’s childhood memory of being up and the roof her apartment building, the centre of the work is painted on fabric and the border is quilted, on closer inspection you can also see that she has added a story into the paneling to go along with the work .

Ringgold’s work is relevant to my project as she uses continuous narrative to create movement in her work while also displaying the story which is what I’m trying to do with my current sculptural piece. Her interdisciplinary approach is also interesting and helped me to tie elements of my different electives together in my work.

The Possession.
JAN 13, 2024 - 10:21pm
“I’m not cold.” She said.
She looked over her shoulder and the apparition drew closer. The ghost’s green glow washed over as it enveloped her. Her body seized as the thin wisps of emerald smoke seeped into her body through her nostrils, ears, and mouth. She coughed a light green smoke in response.
Her eyes glowed a bright green and a weird pang struck the back of her brain. Her body felt weightless and it sank deep into the creaking floorboards. She was waist deep under the second floor when she began to panic. She kicked her feet as if willing herself to fly or fall. She let out a whimper as her chest and shoulders disappeared through the floorboards. She kicked again and she sank to the first floor space beneath her second story room.

People love to ask artists about the source of their inspiration. The answer varies from artist to artist. For me, inspiration comes in bite-sized pieces from all sorts of places!
One of my favourite places to find a creative spark is out in the forest. I’m not really a hiker so much as a “wanderer” — there are so many interesting nooks and crannies in the woods! I could spend all afternoon poking around the same spot. A neat bug with bright colours might become a tiny faery painting. Some exposed roots knotted together in an interesting way might be the starting point for a lacey pattern on a medieval gown. Sometimes just a particularly shiny rock will inspire a new colour palette!
I’ve never really gotten the knack of taking awesome photographs, so I’m almost always carrying a tiny sketchbook on my wanders. I enjoy painting, but my favourite form of art has always been sketching and doodling with a good, old-fashioned pen!

Did you know? Or did you forget? You can do whatever you want with your art. Put random scribbles wherever. Horizontal lines over your character. Add dots everywhere and on everything. Draw eyes different than the rest of the face. Change art styles halfway through. Cut and glue paper cutouts. Use paints and markers together. Use all the filters. Use photos on top to add texture.
You can do what you want. Like literally literally literally.
Add a rubber ducky in the corner for no reason, put text in different languages on the background, leave your handprints or wipe your fingers on the paper.
Go have fun now this stuff isn't meant to be stressful for you

I just need to say this rq: people are freaking out about ai like it’s all we’re going to be consuming in the future, but as long as there’s people who want to make art and storys that’s just not going to happen. Ai should be used to inspire human creativity not replace it. So this is your friendly reminder to commission some small artists if you can afford it in these trying times, and I don’t encourage bullying often, but if you see anyone who makes some ai images and calling it their art, then I highly encourage you to bully them of the face of the internet. So basically this is a very elaborate way of saying: fuck the government, fuck people who want to replace artists with ai, and your not going to be irrelevant in the future as long as you fight in for what is right in this shitty era of humanity. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

Week 4- Room Triptych
(17/4/24)
I was working on this series of three conjoined paintings as I was researching for my artist presentation so I was feeling very inspired by Luc Tuymans' domestic interior scenes filled with allegories I painted my own.
Using Indian ink to achieve the same monochromatic palette and working from photographs I took with my phone I painted three angles of my bedroom, a deeply personal place to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the three were completed I took inspiration from Tuymans' mounting and glued my ink paintings onto white card to frame them. Almost giving the illusion of looking in a window.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I waited till after I had presented on the 19th before I uploaded these.

Tbh it's so amazing and inspiring when you go to read a small artist's comic, and as you're reading it you can watch as the art gets better and better!! You're watching their improvement due to all the practice that goes into making a comic 💜
