Summary: When struggling writer Castiel Novak’s father disappears, Castiel inherits his cult classic “Michael Singer” book series. Following a disastrous first panel of a new book tour with Dean Winchester, the series’ cover model (and big-time fan of both the books and, well, Castiel himself), Castiel decides that he’s going to end the series by killing off the title character, much to Dean’s dismay.
Shortly after said panel, Castiel is kidnapped by Arthur Ketch, who has discovered that Castiel’s father had been using real supernatural folklore in his book series, and wants Castiel to help him figure out the spell for eternal life by using his father’s work. Dean sets out on a mission to rescue Castiel, win his heart, and maybe even save his favorite book series in the process.
Excerpt: To Castiel’s surprise, he’s already got a few hundred followers. He taps over to the list of the four accounts he’s following: his agent, Angel of Thursday Publishing, what appears to be a bot devoted to posting snippets of his father’s previous books, and—
“Dean Winchester, keep that wig on your head before I staple it there.”
Castiel looks up to see the series’ cover model standing in the doorway of the hotel suite, dressed in well-fitting jeans—too well-fitting, if Castiel is being honest—and a forest green henley, a long blonde wig clutched in one hand.
His breath catches in his throat.
Castiel has to give Angel of Thursday credit: aside from his hair, Dean is a picture-perfect depiction of Michael Singer, the lead character in his Michael Singer series. Well, not really his, he supposes; it’s his father’s, but just like his beat-up gold Lincoln Continental, the ramshackle house that’s seen better days, and the frankly incredible amount of debt racked up from self-medication, takeout, and failed writing fellowship application fees, his father had passed it on to Castiel before promptly dropping off the face of the earth.
Following the adventures of Michael through all things haunted and heroic as he fights against supernatural malpractice and devastation, Michael Singer began as a way for Castiel’s father to pass the time when Castiel was an infant. He’d pour himself a cup of coffee, plop Castiel down on his knee, and bounce him up and down as he wrote, all while simultaneously dragging Michael to hell and back—more often than not, literally.
“It’s itchy and it makes me look like a fucking Hemsworth,” Dean grumbles, tossing the wig to the side and dropping down onto the couch in Castiel’s suite. “Hey, Cas.”
“H-hello, Dean.” Dean looks at him, mouth twisted into a crooked little grin, and winks.
“There’s nothing wrong with looking like a Hemsworth, sweetie,” Anael says.
Castiel would never say it aloud, but Dean looks better than a Hemsworth, with or without the absurd wig he’s been forced to wear. In Castiel’s opinion, Dean’s always looked better than a Hemsworth, ever since he’d first been hired as the Michael Singer cover model.
With a jaw that has Castiel’s gut doing somersaults and strong, broad shoulders that pair perfectly with a slim waist, as well as striking green eyes that can convey entire sentences, if not paragraphs, in a single expression, Dean Winchester must have been born to one day grace the cover of supernatural romance novels. He fits right in among the dramatic, stock-photo backgrounds and large, golden typeset of the titles on each cover, but now that Castiel’s in charge of Michael and his looks, maybe he could throw Dean a metaphorical bone. Maybe he could make it canon that Michael gets a much more practical haircut for monster hunting; surely that would give Dean a break (and hopefully put Castiel in his good graces).

there’s like…. at least two i know of. the one with the fancy coat and the one calling himself vincent that actually looks like a human, i love them. i have so many thoughts about feral doombots just Around and Vibin and its not like victor gives a shit. he can make new ones. whatever.
but also ;-; that's So good, especially if its somehow pre-reveal for iron man being Known as anything other than like, a human in an armor so perhaps he meets a doombot somehow (maybe it's stealing replacement parts from SI and when IM realizes that its not... actually taking anything dangerous hes like. oh. oh. because he's smart enough to also know why he isnt just going to get repaired like normal) and it's just, this sense of Recognition that iron man cannot say anything else
i think it would be good if it was like. iron man offers to help fix the bot. oor just, helps him. no expectation of anything else. and the doombot is supicious because of course it is, it was programmed by Paranoid Bastard Supreme, and it's not like iron man can even tell it why he wants to help it so badly, because even if he doesn't think it's actively a danger that doesn't mean giving it the information that he isn't human like everyone assumes wouldn't be... an incredibly bad idea. it's still attached to a supervillan, after all
(also sidenote but i am frothing at the mouth about potential doomquest in this universe it would be SO funny,,,,,, king arthur sends a pretty lady to iron man's room for "companionship" and iron man is just like. ah. ok. i dont know what is expected of me right now. also doomquest is very good to me, specifically, because its one of the only early comics things where almost anyone has more respect for tony than for iron man, which i enjoy, i think it would be SO good for airon man au especially if iron man is like. in danger of just... running out of power. technicallyyyyy i think this should also be a problem in canon, i think doomquest happens during chestplate era, where hes largely not able to go more than about a day without Dramatic Wall Outlet Time and yet hes fine just vibin in camelot (famously deprived of wall outlets) for at least a couple of days, but YEAH SEND AIRON MAN TO CAMELOT i think hed be both freaked out and also. sad that tony couldn't experience it. i think the background radiation of iron man's life is just... sadness that tony cannot experience any of the cool things he does)
but like... him continuing too help this doombot. maybe the doombot also helps him out somehow, as well. maybe subtly interveening in some fights. maybe giving iron man some neat lil tech tips. maybe a;klsdjfasdf the doombot still wants like. Something To Do and not just sit idle all the time or something so iron man hooks 'em up with a fuckin. tech support job. or like, product testing, for SI. something where he can just fix shit thats been broken in the stupidest ways or, try to destroy other things. who knows i dont. but maybe theres an attack at SI and iron man deals with it but hes damaged, and normally he'd like. hide away and do a quick n dirty patch job just so theres not obvious holes into nothing, but. the doombot follows him. and finds him. and its just... looking at eachother. knowing "oh fuck we're the same" and also "oh fuck he knows"

I try to respond to all of them, but can get overwhelmed.

When it comes to angsty endings, I usually only do one-shots, so it’s probably a toss up between "What have you done?" and If Your Door is Open Tonight . . .

I’ve had a few people argue with me about why something in my fics isn’t possible in the games. SIR YOU DO REALIZE YOU ARE READING FANFICTION??

Yes, all of it.

I helped with a Dragon Age/Hades AU once

Not to my knowledge.

I have! It's a really different process, but a lot of fun.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Going just by relationship tags on Ao3, it’s Anders/Fenris, but it’s more accurate to say Anders/happiness.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Compassion and Justice is probably the one I’m most likely not to finish, but I have written sequels to it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Mimicking verbal styles in different characters, plus dialogue in general. Also humor (apparently?)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
WHAT DO PEOPLE LOOK LIKE I DON’T KNOW. Honestly, the best you can hope for from me is skin tone and hair color/length. I write fanfic because I can skip a lot of descriptions.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I’ve done it a few times, then footnoted it in the Author’s Notes.

Dragon Age in 2021.

While his Transformer AU design is almost practically finished? Here’s Lewis’s transformer character design I managed to color in with a few tweaks to his hair this time round. The only lore I have for this bot is he’s the tallest out of Arthur and Vivi when it comes to height. He’s the silent type in the group and he’s bit of hothead in this AU.

I think I'd like to make an AU where Sun and Moon are less of daycare assistants, and more like...
Spaceship robots. A la Hal 9000, Arthur from Passengers, Wheatley/Glados, etc.
They're still caring but they're eerie because of that sort of... space robot/AI vibe going on. They're almost TOO human in emotional presentation and I think that would be a fun space to play in.
Sun might have been made more to take care of the little ones or assist passengers who need extra help- silly, fun, if a little overbearing. Can be nervous, but tries his best. Good for ship morale.
Moon might be more of a security guard/attendant to the captain. Very serious, can come across as creepy but tries very hard not to be, tends to be the voice of reason. Great for making decisions, but can be... possessive over the people he cares about.
They also present slightly more adult like in this AU, but not entirely like. Serious or stiff, they are still themselves.
They would be separate in the AU, but able to combine bodies to make the emergency Eclipse automaton- a very VERY big, somewhat chaotic emergency protocol that combines Sun's quick thinking with Moon's rational decision making.
It's possible that some kind of foreign virus that affects non-organic beings takes Moon's programming and sabotages it. Makes him much more dangerous. And as a result, if Eclipse is called while he's still glitching out from the strange virus, or if Moon is left unattended, it becomes a BIG problem.
But it's also too big a problem to have either Eclipse, OR Moon, incapacitated. Moon is one of the central pillars of the ship, and Eclipse is literally the emergency protocol. They can't just shut them down for repairs.
Y/N might not be captain perse. Might be another crew member, or someone who is a civilian aboard the ship who ends up somehow befriending the two bots- and ends up being the only one who can calm down Sun, Moon or Eclipse when things really take a turn for the worst.
I'm just also thinking about the boys in pretty chrome and gold

Do we have to join the Discord?
Y E S. We know, another server, but you don't have to stay in it after the event is over. We need a central location to share information, do check-ins, and answer questions. It'll be fun! It'll have cool bots. Join us. >:)
Why is this an 18+ event?
The Mad Mods are over 18, and we don't want to be legally responsible for anyone else. The Malevolent fandom is, in our opinion, not one for minors in the first place. This isn't a slight against the potential maturity of minors, but in our humble opinion if you can't see a Rated R movie, you don't need to be writing/drawing/voice acting/etc for KiY tentacle smut or Arthur's suicidal ideation. Sorry. :(
Why do you separate NSFW options if this is an 18+ event?
The fact is, not everyone is into NSFW! NSFW doesn't only include sexual content, but violent and potentially triggering content as well. We want everyone to have the option to engage with the event the way they want! If they don't want to possibly get paired with a NSFW topic, they have that right.
What are the final submission requirements for this event?
ALRIGHT. This is a relatively short event, like a BB-lite. We are also slotting carefully between several other Malevolent fandom events (looking at you BB, Yuletide, and Anniversary) so we want to keep it reasonable.
The minimum word count is 3k, the maximum is 20k. We aren't going to be rules lawyers if you're at 20,100 but like, keep it tight. Anything under 3k is not accepted, push yourself! This must be a fully realized work with a beginning, middle, and end, appropriately tagged, and reasonably error-checked. One-shot style only (if you turn it into a series later that's your business but your work should be able to stand alone.)
The minimum art submission is one complete piece, the maximum is three. We do not limit the kind of art you do except no podfics or bookbinding (you just won't have time if you're collabing the way you should). Physical art/cosplay is acceptable but be aware you have a short window and the writer is writing at the same time as you are making your art. You will have to take nice photos of your work as well. Know your limits.
Why didn't you use my (insert fandom/trope/AU) submission in the event list?
Here's the tough love: We are under no obligation to use your suggestions. We love them. We long for your delicious ideas. But sometimes they don't work for what we're trying to do, and we already have something of a list compiled. Here's a short, non exhaustive number of reasons of why we might have left it on the cutting room floor:
Too common, too overdone in our fandom, too niche, too much explaining, too close to canon, too subtle, too NSFW (impressive), too triggering.
We also do NOT do crossover AUs or tropes specific to fandoms (we can do a high fantasy AU, but not a Witcher AU, feel me? We can have a comedy relief punching bag but not a Red Shirt.).
We will probably never have an amnesia trope because, surprise, that features in the canon quite heavily, AND it's been done a lot by fanfic already. This event is for pushing boundaries!
If you have that absolutely wild, perfect, worldbuilt, detailed, weird as fuck AU that you REALLY wanna see?? Do it! MAKE THE ART YOU WANNA SEE!! Just don't expect to get it in this event. (Been there. Sorry.)
Why don't you have a beta tag?
Cane is all the beta we need.
We don't offer betas because this is meant to be a more relaxed event, even if it is a more CRAZY one! The writing submissions are fairly small and don't require any standard of polish or 'skill'. It's too much work for the mods to keep track, frankly, and we don't think ya need the hand holding! If you would like to use a beta, we will have a channel for #beta-requests on the Discord where you can put the call out for one!
What if I get a trope/AU I don't like?
First, we ask you to really think about this assignment, an be sure you can't transform it into something more interesting for you! But if so, everyone gets one (1) courtesy reroll, no questions asked. We don't want anyone to feel really stuck or uncomfortable. Subsequent rerolls are on a case-by-case basis (mostly if we messed up and gave you something you shouldn't have gotten for xyz reasons).
What happens if I have to drop out?
Firstly, we hope everything is okay in your life! We hope you would only drop out from an unavoidable extenuating circumstance, our of respect for your partner who you have been working with. If this must be, we wish you the best, and we have pinch hitters standing by to step in with their crazy ideas to fill the gap! You will be expected to release your trope/AU assignment to the pinch hitter, no matter how far along you were with it, our of respect to your partner who will not be reassigned. You are welcome to continue your unfinished work to post privately outside of the event!
What if my partner drops out!?
DON'T PANIC!
This is part of why this event is so limited in scope. This is a big challenge, to collab and follow two trope restrictions is a lot to recover if one person leaves. If your partner has to drop out we WILL assign you a pinch hitter, even possibly one of the mods (though we are reserved for extremely last minute cases). No matter what, you WILL have a finished product, even if it posts late. No whacko left behind!
I'm having (x) issue!
Okay! If you aren't having fun, that's a problem. The entire point of this event is to have a good time. Is this a challenging art format? Potentially! Is this supposed to be a difficult or stressful event? HELL NO! Please contact a mod with your issue after checking that it hasn't been answered or fixed here, in asks (tagged #mmm faq), or on the #questions-and-solutions discord channel. But before all that: take a breath. Repeat to yourself that you are an independent, powerful, brilliant creator and a valued part of this fandom. Release the breath. You've got it. Maybe problems can be solved with a bit of confidence and a fresh outlook. We'll help you fix whatever else.

((Okay, so after suffering from another art block for almost two months straight, I have forgotten to do my wrist stretches again before making some TF minicons concepts for Vivi. I’ve only gotten one down and so far I do gave some designs elements I might switch with another design I have in mind for her. Lewis and Arthur’s mech designs are still being fleshed out in my head, but I do have some simple ideas of making Lew a bodyguard and Arthur a medic bot (or some sort of robotic mechanic).
I am still trying to get some simple design choices for them down, but I DO know where the main three’s roles are supposed to be. Vivi’s an accidental turnt sentient AllSpark vessel, Lewis’s a bodyguard, and Arthur is an in between medic/mechanic. I am still cooking up some lore for them, but this AU might be fun to play with once I get some art for it done.))

Das Renaissancetheater
ist ein Wiener Theater in der Neubaugasse im 7. Bezirk und dient derzeit als einer der Spielorte für das Theater der Jugend.
Der Theatersaal, für dessen Einbau wohl die Brüder Eduard und Emanuel Schweinburg verantwortlich waren, befindet sich in einem Mietwohnhaus und umfasst 667 (ursprünglich 844) Sitzplätze. Da es sich um kein eigenständiges Theatergebäude handelt, wird es oft auch Renaissancebühne genannt.
GESCHICHTE
Volksbühne 1912–1916
Der neu fertiggestellte Theatersaal wurde seit Ende 1912 durch den Verein Wiener Freie Volksbühne genutzt. Dieser bot für seine 25.000 Mitglieder Theatervorstellungen zu sozial verträglichen Eintrittspreisen. Am 12. Dezember fand die erste Aufführung mit Nestroys Kampl statt. Danach folgten unter anderem Hanns Sassmanns Das blaue Aug’, Else Feldmanns Der Schrei, den niemand hört, Georg Hirschfelds Die Mütter und Romain Rollands Die Wölfe. Angestrebt wurde ein künstlerisch und literarisch anspruchsvolles Programm.
Seit Herbst 1916 spielte das Ensemble der Freien Volksbühne unter Arthur Rundt im ehemaligen Colosseum in der Nussdorfer Straße 4–6. Das Theater in der Neubaugasse, weiterhin als Volksbühne bezeichnet, benutzten bis 1918 andere Gruppen.
Wiener Freie Bühne 1920–1932
Ab 1920 nutzte der neugegründete Verein Wiener Freie Bühne das Theater, das nunmehr in Renaissancebühne umbenannt wurde. Zu dieser Zeit traten u. a. Alfred Neugebauer, Hans Moser oder Gisela Werbezirk dort auf. Am 12. Dezember 1923 spielte Ida Roland an der Renaissancebühne die Titelrolle in der Uraufführung von Hans Kaltnekers Mysterium "Die Schwester" die lesbische Ruth.
Von 1925 bis 1931 leitete Josef Jarno das Theater und engagierte Publikumslieblinge wie seine Frau Hansi Niese, Maria Eis, Lucie Englisch oder Willy Trenk-Trebitsch.
Ab 1932 blieb das Theater, von vereinzelten Veranstaltungen abgesehen, geschlossen.
Renaissancetheater 1938–1970
Die Spielzeit 1938 wurde von Felix Lapernikus-Gerald geleitet, zur Aufführung gelangten auch Operetten, wie etwa 1943 Odo Nowosad-Nissens Der Himmel auf Erden oder Nico Dostals Eva im Abendkleid. und Verliebtes Dreieck (1944, Regie: Hans Olden).
Im Sommer 1946 führte Alexander Kowalewski die Operette Der gütige Antonius von Jara Beneš mit großem Erfolg auf. 1947 war Fritz Habeck Dramaturg und stellvertretender Direktor der Renaissancebühne. 1947 inszenierte Franz Pfaudler Nikolai Gogols "Der Revisor" mit Wolf Albach-Retty und Hans Olden (Bühnenbild: Gustav Manker). 1948 pachtete Leon Epp die Bühne als zusätzliche Spielstätte für Unterhaltungstheater. In diesem Jahr wurde dem aus dem Exil zurückgekehrten Oskar Karlweis ein euphorischer Empfang bereitet.
Die erwarteten Einnahmen blieben aber aus und Epp musste überschuldet das Theater bereits 1949 an Paul Löwinger abgeben, der es zur Spielstätte der Löwinger-Bühne machte. Daneben fanden auf der Bühne auch Gastspiele statt, so 1950 von Ludwig Stössel oder 1957 von Harry James.
Theater der Jugend seit 1970
Ab Herbst 1957 wurde der Theaterraum abwechselnd auch vom Theater der Jugend benutzt.
Seit 1970 wird das Renaissancetheater allein vom Theater der Jugend geführt. Die technische Ausstattung ist für Kinder- und Jugendtheater einzigartig und ist sowohl für Sprechtheater als auch Musikproduktionen geeignet.

Fragment of Light -- Spec fic for 4x11 (includes some spec for 4x09 and 4x10, with the airing of 4x09 rendering most of this AU). When Arthur banishes Gwen from Camelot, he must come to grips with his mistake and let go of the life he destroyed. Meanwhile, Gwen struggles with the loss of not only her future but her confidence in the future of Camelot as well. Rated T.
A Handful of Sand -- After several months of war, Uther finally decides to pursue an alliance with one of the neighboring kingdoms. But with Camelot run dry of both money and knights there is little he can offer in return … save his son. Written for Drabble Challenge #3 at ag_fics (first place). Rated G.
Multa Paucis -- More than once Gaius’s words turn Gwen’s world upside down, changing her (and her relationship with Arthur) forever. Written for Drabble Challenge #2 at ag_fics (first place). Rated G.

And when the door closes behind Peter Parker—when Michelle feels the return of that sharp ache and constant confusion she’s lived with since November—it’s only then that she realizes. She mentions the encounter to Ned, because she's always sharing customer service stories and this is certainly one of the stranger ones. But she keeps her realization to herself—she's not sure how to tell him, not when she barely understands it herself. Because a stranger walked into the donut shop, and for three minutes, her life had made sense. MJ (and Ned) searching for answers in a post-NWH world. Rated T; complete (5/5).
someone out there who can bring me back to you -- Six months ago, Peter Parker was declared killed in action on his way back from his last mission. MJ knows it's a cover up, and nothing's going to stop her from finding out the truth--not time travel, not murder bots, and certainly not the woman MJ knows is responsible for his disappearance: Eleanor Bishop. Alright so stuff about the Heroes Mega Man AU.... I've talked about this before but I've changed my mind on some stuff since then and also come up with more details
People joke about Light and Wily being divorced but here it's a literal divorce that kicks off the narrative. Angela gets custody of their robots while Arthur gets the lab
Angela knew about Nathan's faulty solar core for years but hid it from him; in fact, she tried multiple times to fix it without his knowledge or consent. Eventually Arthur reveals this to get Nathan on his side
After Nathan rebels, Angela programs Peter to be loyal to her no matter what. Their relationship gets pretty Fly On A Dog by The Megas dot mp3 but due to his programming he can't fully go against her wishes
When Peter becomes Mimic Man, he can use multiple other robots' abilities at once to compensate for having neither a helpful robo-dog nor a reliable base weapon
Of the robot masters Arthur reprograms, most are factory-built. The two exceptions are Mohinder and Sylar...
Mohinder was built to be his father's lab assistant before being reprogrammed as the semi-reptilian/insectoid Genetic Man. Said father was killed in the ensuing robot uprising, and even after being reprogrammed to be "good" again, Genetic Man won't rest until he destroys the killer
Sylar (that was his original name here, because if you can name your robot kids after music genres then why not a brand of watch) was made by an infamously unethical scientist and then pawned off as an assistant to an unsuspecting watchmaker. Upon being reprogrammed he realizes his nefarious potential as Clockwork Man
Apart from them, we've got...
Cheer Woman: built by the Union Wells high school robotics team to direct their cheerleading squad. Her initial form is small and harmless, but her agility and extreme durability make her a useful weapon when modified
Teleport Man: designed by Yamagato Industries to take the load off overworked human employees; his construction was overseen directly by the CEO. But it turns out his state-of-the-art teleportation and time-stopping technology puts a massive drain on his power cell, so he needs...
Supercharge Man: another Yamagato bot, made to assist Teleport Man. When reprogrammed, he gets upgraded so his lightning can do damage as well as charge others
Psy Man: made by the government to replace human cops, as his psychic powers make him a more efficient investigator. When weaponized, these physic transmissions can be directed outward to damage people's minds; he also has a gun arm as a backup weapon, but that's less useful in practice against other robots
Mirror Woman: an adult entertainment robot who was supposed to come in a set of two, but her manufacturer was careless, leading to her sister being destroyed soon after activation and a faulty line of code that turned her violent. She was going to be deactivated before Arthur co-opted her
Phase Man: built to help firefighters, as his ability to disintegrate into nanobots and reform allows him to enter burning buildings and evacuate people safely. Due to a misunderstanding, he was also slated for deactivation despite functioning perfectly
During the robot uprising, a couple of smaller robots are built to assist the robot masters. A GPS tracking bot helps Psy Man and later Genetic Man track down their opponents, and a tech support bot makes sure Mirror Woman and Phase Man don't break down. Both these smaller robots later receive upgrades, with the latter becoming Rebel Man, a robot master in his own right
Mimic Man makes sure to salvage the IC chips from the robots he defeats, but Angela doesn't care about rebuilding them since they're not her robots, and most of their original manufacturers don't care either. Luckily he can copy Clockwork Man's ability, which gives him the insight to make the necessary repairs himself
The robot masters keep their weapon upgrades after the fact (especially Teleport Man, whose weaponization was just being handed a sword) but Genetic Man and Cheer Woman have their cosmetic alterations undone so they can go back to being more humanoid and resume their normal lives...
...Except Cheer Woman can't resume her normal life because her school was destroyed in the attacks. Instead she gets taken in by Flying Man and later becomes a lab assistant to the Petrellis
Since they're all from different manufacturers, they react differently to all the reprogramming; most handle it okay going forward, but Clockwork Man's code is hard to turn back once set to "evil" mode, and Psy Man's ethics program slowly degrades over time
Isaac designs robots for corporations and occasionally crafts small ones of his own when he can afford the parts. Simone is his assistant, but she doesn't have much interest in robotics and wishes he'd apply his creative talents elsewhere
Noah is a member of the Emerald Spears and thinks robots are too dangerous to live side-by-side with humans, especially if they're sentient. He... maybe changes his mind over time?
Although the Emerald Spears wouldn't make a habit of employing sentient robots like the Company does people with powers, they do have one robot working for them: Amnesia Man, who was built by a mad scientist and co-opted by the Spears. They tampered with him in an effort to remove his sentience, but only succeeded in removing his voicebank
The second line of robot masters are ones Arthur designed himself, and he makes it so they can't be repaired after destruction. Mimic Man can't bring himself to kill them, but Flying Man is somewhat on Angela's side again by then so he takes care of it
In the end Flying Man's solar core gives out because he refused to have it replaced. Once he's shut down Angela "fixes" him against his wishes, but since he's an older model he doesn't have an IC chip and therefore can't be brought back with the same personality after significant adjustments to his framework, so he has to be shut down again for good
