i think it's more explicit in the untamed than in the mdzs novel but this dynamic is one of my favorite things about the mdzs universe i think!! they're so family. i love them sm. i also think the jiang cheng x wen qing thing they attempted in the untamed is funny asf because to me they are both the most aroace people i've ever seen

out of the way: wang/xian undoubtedly peak! xuan/li v cute, love em. xi/yao is my favorite of the possible 3zun pairings, they're just too juicy and such good narrative foils to wang/xian...
nie/yao is also fun to me because of how much tension and strife they have.
i like nie/lan the least of all possible 3zun pairings just bc i like the conflict jgy brings to the table LOL
even though zhui/ling is the most popular junior pairing i... am not a huge fan of it? they're not blood relatives at all but both are still family to wwx in ways that make me feel weird about them romancing each other. in no war/wens are good aus i'd be more into it...
jingzhui isn't on the chart but they're also both inner lan clan members. so. weird to me! i like ling/yi best. they banter a lot but still get along well as friends
i can see why people are compelled by wen ning and wwx. i love their fucked up codependency too. i just don't see it romantically
i also see why people might ship cheng/xian, i just sincerely think their relationship is most compelling as siblings or pseudo-family due to the social class tensions.
chang/mian is quite rare just bc both characters are so minor but like... god can you imagine all the jiang cheng & wwx parallels. pointing. those are their dads
sang/cheng is like... most of the time it feels very pair the spares-esque. BUT. they both have a lot of similarities underneath the surface and if people tap into that i do like it. BUT (again) i just really prefer it platonic. jiang cheng is like peak "this man is aroace and does not know what either of those words are" to me. celibacysweep and all that
sang/yao. honorable mention to my favorite fucked up ship that literally nobody ships (including myself!). i can't like em romantically, only enjoy the dynamic, but it's so fun to think about. like spy x spy but worse.
and finally stuff that i don't like
no real reason for sang/yu, i just don't see em that way. i'm too novel-only to like wen qing/jc.
LWJ/anyone else feels too much like blasphemy. similar to shipping hua cheng tgcf with people who aren't xie lian LOL

this is like peak pair the spares to me. they're literally coworkers. they're just two people who lead clans and only talk business with each other. they aren't friends, they don't even make smalltalk. their relationship is the equivalent of sometimes bumping into a linkedin connection at the grocery store. come on. COME ON. they have zero personal ties except for the fact that their brothers are deeply in love and have a torrid romance spanning decades
for lxc especially this just feels like such a weak ship to me bc you have TWO whole other people he has fascinating, actually existing dynamics with (nmj and jgy), and xi/yao especially has so so so many parallels to wang/xian. 3zun ships have so much angst and what-ifs and there's so much more meat to it.
see also my thing about jc just... honestly i cannot see him romantically working out with anyone. nobody. whatsoever. this is a man for whom romance is not the solution, ever
so i can't. it literally drives me crazy. i cannot make sense out of xi/cheng whatsoever it doesn't compel me one bit and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say i hate it when there are other ships right there ahahahghdskljfdslk

[modern aroace #jiangcheng and jin ling]
where jl grew up with jc never really being in a relationship and the handful of ones he had only going on for a couple of weeks (or even days one time) before breaking off.
he wonders if it's because of him, since jc is young but had to take care of a small child. obviously, jc reassures him about this and simply says "I was too busy with school and wasn't even looking for a relationship, don't worry a-ling".
But jl doesn't want him to be alone so he tries to sneakily get jc to find someone or just put is attention on people. "Isn't she pretty?" "Oh, she seems to like you". but he realises quickly that his uncle doesn't seem interested in ladies, so he changes his strategy and tries with guys. The results are as bad. it's only around 15-16 that jl realises something: his uncle is just /not/ interested in anybody and seems really uncomfortable when people are obviously flirting with him.
"Do you think jiujiu is alright?" he ask his friends once after telling them (he has no one else apart from them and jc to talk about it. It was rather obvious jc is not an option).
"Maybe he just doesn't feel that kind of attraction?" suggest oyz, a bit unsure how it would work.
"Maybe he's like Wen Ning" suggest lsz only to have the three other turn to him. They didn't know much about lsz extended cousin, so they were unsure what he was talking about, just asking for more detail.
"He just doesn't experience sexual or romantic attraction at all, I forgot the words for it I would need to ask him for that" he explained. This made a lot of sense in jl mind, assuming jc probably already knew that about himself and just never told him about it (probably unsure how he would react or because he didn't see it necessary?).
So he instead switches to push away anyone who was trying to bother him by flirting heavily. It was to a point even his friend would (more subtly) make people understand jc was not interested.
of course, jc catches onto that 180 his nephew and finds it a bit weird. He was all in to apparently find him a date and now he chases away anyone who approaches him?
So at dinner one time, he asks about it.
"Isn't jiujiu aromantic and asexual? Doesn't it make you uncomfortable when people do that?" jl answers.
and this throws jc into confusion because what is he talking about?! so jl explains to him, looking a bit unsure that he might have wrongly assumed (again) something about his jiujiu. but what could he do when he doesn't tell him much in that department?!
jc looks pensive for a while, making jl a bit nervous, before he sees realisation and relief flashing over his jiujiu face, looking up towards him.
"You're telling me... there are other people who feel like this?"
and this is when jl realises his jiujiu /never/ knew. jc eyes look teary rather quickly, looking to the side a bit. "So there isn't something wrong with me, other people feel like that too".
oh. his jiujiu thought something was /wrong/ with him. jl feel sad about the idea that his jc had believed all these years that something was wrong and had probably forced himself into a relationship "No! There is nothing wrong with you!" he quickly replied, wanting to reassure his jiujiu.
They end up talking some more about it, jl is happy to see his uncle looking so relieved and reassured about something he felt like people might have shamed him for. from there on out, jl is jc biggest ally ever and supports him and is ready to remind him nothing is wrong with him.
(jl is the best ally until he realises he might not be as straight as he thought he was, nor as all as he thought he was)
Like, I can easily imagine jfm and yzy shoving in his head that he /will/ find a wife one day. Hence making him feel shame because he's /failing/ them /again/.
Not to help some of his past relationships might not have had the best reaction to him trying to put it into words.
and he overall stopped mentioning it since the couple of people he confided in only made him feel worst and broken as if something was really wrong with him and that no one else was like that.

A few of the GODLIKE liberties I have taken with canon
Wen ning had a childhood illness and after he “was never quite the same” (had some minor brain damage and suffered mental/learning disabilities which got better over time but never fully recovered)
The dafan wen we’re originally an entirely separate, tiny sect called the Dafan Shang, which specialized in medicinal cultivation. After wen ning/wen qing’s parents died, wen ruohan annexed/colonized them and made them change their last name to wen
Lan xichen has had Quite Enough of ppl fucking w his little brother, and he’s going to punch the next person who tries
Shipping Nie huaisang/wen Qing as aroace platonic life partners
Jiang cheng as the first coreless sect leader
The jiang becoming a medicinal sect (I could go on a whole worldbuilding rant abt how this makes sense for this fic and in general, but I’m tryna keep this short— they take in the wens is the cliff notes)
I’m making Wei wuxian die the same day Jin ling is born lol

Jiang Cheng cultivating to immortality but now it's just him and Wen Ning (with occasional visits from Lan Xichen and Fierce Corpses! Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao) who live together just out of boredom. However it's been 5,000 years and now Wen Ning just absolutely roasts the shit out of Jiang Cheng.
Fast forward to modern times, Jiang Cheng runs into reincarnated Wen Qing who assumes he and Wen Ning are dating. Wen Ning immediately jumps on it because like fuck is he letting his sister date a 5k+ year old, no neither of them have even flirted but he's not going to let it even be thought about.
"Yes this is the love of my life, Chengcheng."
"I'm going to kill you."
"We've been married for a very long time."
"I swear to god-"
"He's very very gay."
"Okay you know what? Fucking kiss me you asshole, prove it. Fucking prove it."
Reincarnated!Wen Qing left like two seconds into the conversation to go talk shit about the weird gay couple walking their cat with reincarnated! Wei Wuxian. They're just having this argument for no reason.

I’m not sure but I see a LOT of SangCheng fics and I really don’t understand why there are shipped though I find it real cute (if you could give me an idea why they are shipped I would be grateful.) Honestly, NHS and JC are probably on board with WN on the AroAce boat cruising over the lakes beside lotus pier and judging everyone else’s ship😂😂 as a multishipper, I ship characters with those who makes them happy😂😂 and that’s a lottery given the baseline/plot of a fic😂😂😂😂
Oh, I have no idea. That one has always puzzled me no matter how many times I try to write it. Pretty people go well together, maybe? Pair the spares syndrome? I’m open to audience suggestions!

Wen Chao’s relationship is basically like... he’s like a sugar daddy but with murder and stuff involved, right? So Wen Qing is obviously looking at this and being like “ah, so sex makes you stupid”.
