the end of the semester is here!
Well, it's been a very calm semester with only two classes to deal with, but I'm going to miss the homework anyways. Today was a day of productivity, wrapping up final assignments and preparing for my final essay for my poetry class. Here's my to-do:
Write commentaries on final two poems
Write commonplace assignment
Prepare outline for final essay
Make a personal study plan for over the summer
I'm excited for a heavier load of classes in the fall, and to have all the time in the world to read, write, and make art this summer! Right now I'm still reading the same books I posted about before, but making good progress on all of them! The third book in "The Devoured Worlds" series is coming out in early May, and I have to lighten my reading load so I can be ready to dive into that! I've preordered it at my local bookstore, so all the second week of May I'll be patiently waiting by the phone for the call :)
I've been feeling very excited for the summer, but also a sense of coming-of-age. It feels like I'm really becoming an adult now, and I love it! I'm so excited for this new chapter of my life full of learning in all the ways possible.
Love,
Minnow <3

Just another one of those posts where I do a bit of a general update on a few things. This time opening with an edited scan of Maomao from Nekokurage's Kusuriya no Hitorigoto manga adaptation to get your attention. Boo!
I've been reading the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto light novels and enjoying them in the sense that I think preteen me would have liked them. I started reading the LNs earlier this year (as they're great for reading in waiting rooms and the like thanks to their short format) and I think the LNs are definitely my preferred version of the story. The anime has a nice OP theme but is fairly middling otherwise and I don't go much on the art in either mang adaptation (though Nekokurage's art has improved recently and Maomao looks less like a giant-headed baby doll in the Animate bonus cards per my scan above). Maomao is the real draw in all versions so obviously I preordered her Nendo the first moment I could — bring on May 2024!
Tumblr media
Speaking of translated light novels you can buy right now, the first part of the Oguni no Koushaku Reijō wa Tekikoku nite Kakusei Suru light novel was just released as A Young Lady Finds Her True Calling Living with the Enemy Volume #1 by Cross Infinite World (see here). It's a solid story that doesn't overstay its welcome and Bertine's business acumen is just *chefs kiss* for those after a competent heroine.
Once the second and final part of this is out, I'd love to see Cross Infinite World pick up another short (but unrelated) PASH! Books publication, Shiitagerareta Shuusai Reijou to Ringoku no Haraguro Kenkyuusha-sama no Amayaka na Yakusou Jikkenshitsu. The web novel version was quite solid but I haven't read the printed version yet. Yeah I like science ladies, what can I say? It would be so good to keep seeing interesting titles for girls and women being picked up for English release because I tire of isekai villainess stories (which imho peaked years ago with Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou) and there are some great little tales out there that do things a bit differently & just need to be shown to the right audience.

I'm so excited for Metallic Rouge in early January! While it used to be that getting an original property from BONES was always exciting, it has been a while since they've created anything I've really cared about but I'm hoping this will break the drought. If a show has Izubuchi, Kawamoto, Yamada contributing then you know I've got to be there. Plus a couple of lady leads in a SF setting? Trailers with some great action and music? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much but I'm keen to give it a shot. If it isn't for me at least I can say I've given it a chance, right?
Tumblr media
I've been terrible at sharing the latest about this year's Silent Möbius anniversary, but I'm not a news blogger and frankly very few people care so eh y'know, whatever. BUT I figured I should say something about FAIRYTALE PARFUM releasing scents for the key members of AMP this month (though Mana has been totally forgotten, it seems). You can check out the range here, there will be a launch event on the 10th of December in Shinjuku too.
Asamiya drew new artwork for the bottles and while I'd love to get Kiddy's perfume that nods towards her bodily acceptance in its notes, importing that stuff is just too much of a pain so I've settled for a tiny acrylic stand of Kiddy instead. Sadly there's no option to buy a set of stands so I just went "whatever" and grabbed just my best girl. Anyway, if you'd like a tiny acrylic stand of an AMP girl with extra weird proportions then make sure you check out the FAIRYTALE PARFUM website.

hello love!!!
i know i could just send this in a message, but i think asks are much more romantic <3
i have a friend from out of province visiting, and we’ve visited a few bookstores!! i was able to find my dark vanessa, atonement, and the haunting of hill house all second hand!!! my dark vanessa is one of my favourite reads of the year, so i’m glad i was able to find it, and the others are on my tbr!!! i was also able to get the roughest draft (by emily wibberly), the seven year slip, and a thousand ships (a feminist greek-classic spin, helen of troy i believe? something like that)
i know on goodreads the roughest draft has mid reviews, but it was second hand and i recognized the author as i know she’s adored (im planning on reading do i know you soon, before the end of the year for sure - i didn’t like what’s not to love but i’m gonna go in with a fresh mind)
i’m also excited to read the seven year slip, everyone seems to be loving it! i think i’ll add it onto my new septembers readathon challenge - idk if i’m truly in the mood for a rom com at the moment, i just finished business or pleasure and i found it quite … mid. not horrendous, but it didn’t have the same spark i found with rls other books.
how is your annotation for les mis going? i just finished my reread and goodness the brick can be a drudge but isn’t it SO good???? the themes the motifs the characters the symbolism - WHAT FUCKING BRAINROT AMIRIGHT??
i’ve read a few biographies this year (the only non fiction i’ll entertain lol), and i’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all!!! i most recently read crying in h mart by michelle zauner, and i didn’t know at first that she was japanese breakfast!! the book is so raw and intimate, and i listened to a couple of her albums and i really enjoyed her <3
as you know, i just started painted devils and vanja and emeric are everrryythinngg to me i truly need to buy the books - can’t wait to make an order from indigo i’m thinking of preordering emily henry’s new book 👀
anyways i think that’s all i wanted to share haha, hope your week is going well 🥰🥰 i’m hoping of changing my theme soon (have been wanting to for a while) but i never know what to change it to, the struggle of a girlblogger i swear
hi friend!!! i always love getting messages from you, whether they're an ask or a message! 🤍 i haven't done a nice bookstore visit in a while (i went in briefly to grab seven year slip for annotating/traveling book club a bit ago, but aside from that i haven't gone to a bookstore in a while just to meander and pick up books (not that i need to, i've got ... dozens of unread books just sitting here waiting for me to read them). i didn't loveeeee the roughest draft but i really, REALLY loved do i know you? — i went in thinking that the roughest draft would fill my emily henry void, though, so i had higher expectations for it. i also didn't love what's not to love, but i love never vacation with your ex, always never yours, if i'm still being honest, and with and without you! and i'm really excited for the breakup tour (i think it comes out in 2024?).
i really really loved the seven year slip; it's by no means perfect, but i really resonated with how it talks about grief and other things! it just spoke to me! i'm including the trigger warnings for it under the cut, just in case 🤍 i think it's not as "comedic" but it is a romance and i would wait till you're in the right mindset for it. i also found business or pleasure to be kind of mid; i think my ranking of RLS' adult books are ex talk → business or pleasure / weather girl, and then YA is we can't keep meeting like this → t3 → see you yesterday (haven't read her non rom coms)! it's just kind of been a dull year for me in terms of reading (but especially with romance).
i am ... behind on my les mis annotations! i've been doing a volume a month, so i should be done with marius this month but i haven't even picked it up yet! hopefully i'll feel better enough to tackle it this weekend / next week 🤍 but YES it's just sooooo !! we're coming up to my favorite bits of the book so i'm super excited!
i really liked crying in h mart! and was bummed to miss japanese breakfast on tour earlier this year but just had too much going on! and i am SO SO glad you're liking little thieves + painted devils! just such a good series; i need the third book immediately. i preordered emily henry's new book, and i think the only other preorder i have right now is the new beth o'leary which comes out next week (!!!!!!)
excited to see your new theme! hope you're doing well 🤍 i've been toying with changing my url to a seven year slip one, but also think i'll change it for 1989 so i think i'll hold off for a bit 🤍

Mid-Year Reading Update
tagged by @asexualbookbird eh heh heh many thank!!
Amount of books you’ve read so far: 22 and unhappy about it, given the precarious nature of the tbr looming beside my lamp, currently. if you hear a bookalanche from somewhere in the suburbs orbited by cornfields, know it’s just me, crushed under the weight of everything i really am excited to read. please send an excavator.
Best book you’ve read so far in 2022: *cries Ezra why are we excluding Murderbot because it was a reread* okay but New Books Read i’m gonna have to say....GALLANT, based on the combo of how i goodreads rated it and how quickly i devoured it? i’ve read other excellent things but they have been Slow.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022: y’all are reading sequels?? aside from ARTIFICIAL CONDITION (see: reread caveat above), the only proper sequelish thing i’ve read was WHERE THE DROWNED GIRLS GO by seanan mcguire and it was excellent!!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: for someone who preordered both SEASONAL FEARS and PORTRAIT OF A THIEF literal months in advance, i’ve done a smashing job of absolutely not reading them, even though they’re on my Very Imminent TBR.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: i’m also absolutely team NONA THE NINTH on this one.
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): okay biggest SURPRISE was how much i enjoyed george saunders’ A SWIM IN THE POND IN THE RAIN, because i definitely started out thinking he was a prick but he really grew on me?? and it was nonfic, so that was nice and surprising?? anyway i thought of him very fondly by the end, enough that i put some of his fiction on my tbr to investigate!
Newest fictional crush: lol answering this as my teenage!aroace-without-the-language-for-it would have, as “a crush is when you’re not sure if you want to be someone or you want that someone to be your best friend because they’re just supremely cool, right?? haha yeah that’s toootally a crush, i get those all the time just like everybody else~~”. anyway: juniper, from THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES, is my biggest ~crush~, and i love her with my whole heart.
Book that made you cry: NETWORK EFFECT fucked me up. again. my eyes got liquidy but i also don’t tend to Cry, over books or over any irl things either lol. NE made me closest so here it goes.
Book that made you happy: *sweats in Murderbot* listen i know i said i’ve read 22 books, but fully six (6) of those were my Murderbot reread, and most of the others haven’t been....Happy.......but gosh also bot makes me SO HAPPY.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): oooh, tough one. WHAT WE HARVEST by ann fraistat is Very Pretty. i’ve also been delighted by PEOPLE FROM MY NEIGHBORHOOD, recently, and of course GALLANT is gorgeous!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? *cries harder* So Many. i want to read Everything and i feel like i have no time. NONA, of course, but i’ve recently been trying to match my fiction reading to my fiction writing, so i want to reread MIDDLEGAME and read SEASONAL FEARS for driscoll purposes. i’d also like to read STEERING THE CRAFT by ursula le guin!!
i nominate @sixofravens-reads and @gaywinemommarianhawke, if this is a thing you’re interested in!! reading buddies, sound off!!

September TBR--
Tumblr media
The physical TBR is small but mighty. But don't worry I have a whole selection of books I plan on reading that I don't own physically. I have two books I got from NetGalley that I am so excited to read this month, two new releases that are getting read as soon as they arrive, a couple of rereads, and some books I'm positive I'm going to have fun with. Let's get into it.
The Death I Gave Him by Em X. Liu (NetGalley)-- I'm starting this TBR with books I don't own physically because that's just how excited I am for both this book and the next. Oddly, two SciFis. This is a queer retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet with a Sci-Fi twist and a locked-room thriller. What the hell am I doing writing this TBR when I could be reading this book right now? I'm pretty sure these are all my favorite book things. In one book. I'm so beyond excited. Which is good considering the time crunch I'm going to be under. NetGalley is archiving this one on September 5th.
System Collapse by Martha Wells (NetGalley)-- The next in the Murderbot Diaries. We have ART, its humans, Murderbot, and its humans all teaming up to protect a colony of humans from being an unwilling and enslaved workforce for a corporation out to take the planet. But something is wrong with Murderbot and if it doesn't figure out what's wrong soon, the Barish-Estranza hired SecUnits may just get the best of it. It's more Murderbot--what more do you need??
The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (New Release)--The next book in the Inheritance Games series. It was just as much a surprise to me as it was to everyone else that the author was publishing another work in this series. But I'm here for it. Reading the synopsis makes it seem like it takes place after the other books, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. We follow Grayson and Jameson as they must travel to opposite sides of the globe to help non-Hawthorne family members in need. Grayson is off to use his brutality and efficiency for his half-sisters and Jameson is headed to London and an exclusive unground gambling club when his father calls. I'm excited to dive deeper into these characters and to see how Avery, Libby, and Nash fit in as side characters more than anything else.
In These Hallowed Halls edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane (New Release)-- This is a Dark Academia Anthology that is coming out at the perfect time for me. I've been attempting to summon Fall since the end of July. GoodReads pitches this as "a beguiling, sinister collection of 12 dark academia short stories from masters of the genre, including Olivie Blake, M.L. Rio, Susie Yang, and more!" I'm not looking any further into this one. I'm sure I did when I originally preordered it, but with a memory like mine, it's like I never have. I'm so excited to dive into this one later this month.
Iced Out by Veronica Eden (Kindle)-- I'm gonna say it, I miss hockey! It has been damn near 3 months since the cup was awarded. It's been even longer since I've seen my team play because they didn't make the damn playoffs this year. (No, we are NOT talking about it.) And this is an enemies to benefits romance with two teammates who suddenly go on a winning streak after their first hookup. I mean, hockey guys are extremely superstitious. If they won after hooking up, that just means they have to keep doing it...right?
The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh-- I'm rereading the entire The Beautiful series by this author. It's set in late 19th century New Orleans. We follow a girl who has just arrived from France following a murder and all of the chaos that her life erupts into once she meets a group of strange and beautiful people who are part of La Cour des Lions. I'm not the biggest fan of this series. Especially given how the story has diverged from my expectations for it. But I'm excited to see how it ends anyway?
ReDawn by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson-- I'm continuing my reread of the Skyward series by this author. This is the second novella in the series. This time we follow an alien who crash-landed on Detritus and discover more of this crazy universe. I really enjoyed these novellas when I read them originally. I like following different characters and seeing what craziness they get into. But I didn't enjoy rereading the last one in August so I'm a little concerned that this also won't hold up to a reread.
Master of Sorrows by Justin Call-- This has been sitting in the back of my mind just lingering for I cannot tell you how long. I saw someone describe this series as a villain origin story so long ago. And I held off getting to it because they had also mentioned that this is going to be a long series (at least more than a trilogy) and I didn't want to be tied to a series with no end in sight. But...come on, we know who I am as a reader. If there's a morally grey character in any story, I've already adopted them, gave them a cookie, and tucked them into bed. And seeing how we are going to have a normal character develop into something darker? Seriously? Seriously?? But let me go read an actual synopsis. Okay. Wait. Stop. Hold the phone. Did I really just read that this character gets raised by his parents' murderer? It seems like the synopsis I got on that BookTube video is correct and everything in the actual synopsis has just made me want to read it more.

Hello, and welcome to my Outer Banks: Lights Out book review that absolutely no one asked for.
I want to start this off by saying that I had so much hope for this book when I first seen the previews and the description. It made me feel as if we were going to get some answers to JJ’s backstory and what led up to the Pogues’ friendship. I also had no idea of who the author was before preordering, and I jumped the second it was mentioned, not taking the time to research to see if this is directly correlated with the series. (Which it isn’t— the author literally paid the creators to use the characters and plot info.)
First and foremost— the characters of John B, Pope and Kiara do not match the energy of their real characters that we have grown to love. We all know that Pope is passionate about school and his scholarship, but we also know that he’d never pass up the opportunity to go on an adventure with his best friends— especially considering this all takes place during spring break. Kiara hates working at The Wreck, and would use any excuse to leave if she had the chance. So when the author decided to have Pope and Kie stay back from the trip, it just didn’t add up to me, but I continued to read anyways.
John B was really fucking passive aggressive towards JJ almost the entire book BECAUSE HE FELT AS IF JJ ROBBED HIM OF SPENDING MORE TIME WITH HIS DAD BEFORE HE WENT MISSING. Like, WHAT? That isn’t John B. Idc. Our John B knew of JJs home life and would NEVER blame him for tagging along with him and his dad. That pissed me off, almost to the point of where I stopped reading.
So, John b and JJ head out to the Frying pan shoals to spearfish. Savannah shows up on her fancy boat with her shitty boyfriend and their shitty friends, and the chick begins spear fishing. She snags one and it pulls her underwater, and JJ saves her ass. Well, long story short, she gets stuck on the boat with JJ and John b in a storm and her dumbass boyfriend takes off and leaves her. They head to an abandoned lighthouse and then they’re confronted by pirates, yada yada blub blub
Now for Savannah. I was so fucking excited to finally see JJ happy for once. Of course, I didn’t like her character at first because she came off as a preppy touron, but further in she started to have more and more character development. Her dad died and her mom married a rich man. The chick could swim and new how to work on cars and shit. She hated her life, her step dad and claimed her life was boring and that she was with her rich boyfriend HUNTER 🤭 because it was easy being with him. I was straight up digging her. Then BOOM! Her and JJ kiss. There was absolutely no tension build up, the author was just right to it.
Well, after they fight off the pirates, they go to sleep and head back out to OBX the next morning. Lo and behold, hunter is there waiting for her as soon as they get there. THIS BITCH STRAIGHT UP ADMITTED TO CHEATING ON HIM WITH JJ AND HES ALL LIKE “ok, say sorry and I’ll forget it ever happened.” The bitch says sorry, and drives away with hunter— forgetting baby jj even exists. The fuck? Well, JJ decides he’s gonna be all “knight and shining armor” and sneak to her hotel room and shit that night. I was totally expecting for her to run into his arms and them be together, but the bitch. Still. Chooses. Hunter.
I was pissed. So fucking pissed. The book ends with the Pogues eating at The Wreck, and then Savannah and hunter showing up. Jj screams “SCREW THE KOOKS POGUES FOREVER” and then boom. The book fucking ends. I’ve read better stories on wattpad by 12 year olds. I feel robbed. I feel VIOLATED
10/10 do not recommend, don’t waste ya money. The author is a piece of shit anyways. She’s white and the book is focused on… you guessed it… only the white characters. Pope and Kie deserved better. JJ deserved better. This book sucked and so does the author.
K bye.

So ...about "The Warrior in the Woods"...
Okay so this morning, this squiggle meister took a read at a preview for one of the stories that would be featured in the upcoming RWBY: Fairy Tales of Remnant set to release this year September 15th. It’s titled “The Warrior in the Woods”. If you haven’t read the small preview of the tale for yourself, you can find it right here on kobo.com where you can also preorder a digital copy of the book.
Speaking of, does anyone know where one can preorder a hardcopy version of this book? Or do I have to wait till it comes out in September to order the hard copy version then? Of all the upcoming RWBY-related projects that I was most looking forward to, it’s definitely this one and I’d definitely love to own a tangible copy of the book for myself if it’s available.
Anyways let’s talk about “The Warrior in the Woods” story specifically. Obviously I read it and without spoiling much from the short story, all I can say is that I definitely loved it. I think right out the gate, I’m going to peg this one as one of my favourites of the fairy tales purely because I found it to be a rather sweet one.
[SPOILERS AHEAD! NUFF SAID]
Plot-wise, the tale focuses on a young boy who ends up getting lost in the woods after wandering out too far from his home village while out playing with his friends. Basically the gist is that the people of this boy’s village have lived in peace away from the Grimm; so much so that the villagers; as well as its youths had never encountered a creature of Grimm before.
While lost in the forest, the boy is attacked by a Bolbatusk Grimm (I believe) during which he is rescued by a woman with silver eyes. In a nutshell, the boy is saved by a Silver Eyed Warrior which leads into a routine where every year from the day they met, the young boy would always return to the forest in the hopes of meeting the Silver Eyed Warrior again.
Let’s get into what I liked about this tale:  The whole relationship between the young boy and the Silver Eye who I will hereby refer to as “Warrior”. From the get-go, it’s very evident that the Boy is infatuated with the Warrior but what I found adorable was that this boy’s interest in the Warrior was what encouraged him to brave the forest in the hopes of seeing her time and time again for two to three more years (I believe if I’m remembering correctly). And what I thought was interesting was that each time the boy ventured into the forest, he was described as being much braver and stronger than previous encounters.
During his first encounter with the Warrior, the boy was completely powerless during his first run in with a Grimm but as the years went by, the boy would learn from his experiences and would go in a little more prepared each time. While he still needed the Warrior to come to his aid (which she always did in spite of saying she wouldn’t save him and telling him never to return), I definitely dug how much the boy began to mature with each time he met the Warrior as reflected in his growing combat competency.
I liked the angle of the Boy being motivated to become a stronger person thanks to his meeting with the Warrior. I liked that just as much as I love the angle of how much the Warrior in turn grew to care for the Boy in her own way.
When we first meet the Warrior, she described as strong and beautiful (by the Boy) yet hardened and reserved due to her past experiences since according to her story, her kind were known to be hunted and slain by humans because of their power (as we the readers are aware of from the main series as of V4-V6).
So due to this, the Warrior has basically settled into a life of solitude and survival. This is even reflected in her initial attitude towards the Boy since after saving him the first time, she warned him never to return again.
Unfortunately for the Warrior, she had underestimated the Boy’s persistence since he did return to her and each time they’d meet in the woods upon her saving him, the young boy would bring her gifts as a token of his appreciation and fondness of her as well as a symbol of their growing bond.
And in spite of pushing him away at first and all the times they would “meet” afterwards, I liked how it was shown how much the Boy had grown on the Warrior and how his compassion had warmed him up to her to the point that I think she began looking forward to seeing him in a way---or rather she expected him to always return to her in a sense.
Until one year when the boy returned to woods, he would find his Warrior gone. Whether that meant the warrior had eventually met her fate or simply moved on, I don’t know. It is of my assumption that the Warrior was ultimately killed in battle. The ending of story in regards to the Warrior’s fate felt a bit ambiguous to me. The story mentioned the possibility of the Warrior being dead but honestly never confirms it. Not really. So for me, I’m only assuming that the Warrior did die since that’s how the tale left her conclusion.
Now for the real meat of this post---the comparison that I’ve already seen my Rosegardening peers make after reading this tale and now I’m going to chip in and basically say the same thing too.
Yes, the Boy and the Warrior definitely remind me of Oscar Pine and Ruby Rose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s actually kind of hard to NOT make that stark comparison.
After finishing the tale, my theory is that the Boy was probably around the same age as Oscar is currently when he first met the Warrior. Probably 14-15 years of age and I’d like to think that he was probably 17-18 years old by his third and last encounter with the Warrior since later in the story, the author began referring to the boy as a “young adult man” (I believe).
As for the age of the Warrior, that one has me stumped to be honest. In the story, she is described as “woman”. I also recall the author describing the Warrior having strands of silver in her hair which made me think she was probably a much older woman---probably in her 40s.
Then again…women in their late 20s to early 30s can start showing signs of grey hair. Not to mention that people as young as 18 can start greying out due to family background and stress.
So…in that case, I dunno. Going off the featured artwork of the Warrior in the preview, she doesn’t look to be that old at all. So I’m going to safely assume, that compared to the Boy, she was probably in her late 20s or so.
Tumblr media
That’s my cookie crumb deduction.
Either way, here we have yet a second example of a RWBY content featuring an adolescent male expressing romantic interest in an older woman with the writers behind the tale treating this dynamic as something wholesome and rather quite sweet. I would be lying through my teeth if I said I wasn’t rooting for the Boy and the Warrior to end up together-together.  I am NOT sorry. My hopeless romantic of a shipping heart couldn’t help but find the boy’s interactions with his Warrior to be adorable since the story treated it that way.
It’s for this reason why despite the story’s ending, a part of me is still kind of hopeful that the preview isn’t the whole story for that specific tale; y’know what I mean? Like I’m kind of hoping that once the full book is out, there will be more to the Warrior in the Woods story that potentially reveals the young boy and the Warrior reuniting and having their happy ending together.
I could be completely wrong here but dagnabbit, they got me again folks. Not gonna lie. I want this now. I need Roosterteeth to adapt this book into a new animated series like World of Remnant. These characters don’t even have names and already I adore their bond and story together.
Overall, as you can tell, I’m smitten with the relationship between the Boy and his Warrior. And the ending where the boy; now a man, professes his love for his Warrior since the day they met only made me gush even more over this pair. In the squiggle shire, we stan “A Boy and his Warrior”. That’s what I’m going to call this pair.
I guess the point that I’m trying to make here is that it’s nice to see a love---even if it was unrequited in a sense---between a young man and an older woman be treated respectfully in literature. We live in a time when people would screech over the slightest age difference while ignoring the context of the relationship itself.
Though only a short story, I’m happy that the author of Fairy Tales of Remnant portrayed the rapport between the Boy and his Warrior as a sweet relationship.
It’s here where I’m reminded of the Rosegarden dynamic. For the most part, the CRWBY Writers have always treated the bond between Ruby and Oscar as wholesome. It’s what makes the arguments against it in regards to their small 2-year age different sound so silly in my opinion.
So that being said, thank you CRWBY and E.C. Myers for creating yet another sweet dynamic between a young adolescent teenage boy and an otherwise “older” and much more experienced Silver Eyed Warrior.
“…I wish I could have been there for her,” he said slowly, “the way she was there for us.” If she was dead, she had died alone.
“Why did you keep going back there, year after year?” a village woman asked him. “Because she saved you?”
“For that reason, and for many more,” he said slowly. “But I believe she knew the deepest reason of all.”
The group waited. He gazed into the fire.
“I fell in love with her the moment I saw her silver eyes.”
- “The Warrior in the Woods” | Fairy Tales of Remnant by E.C Myers
I would like to say more about this story but I’m afraid right now, all I can give are my first impressions. In a way, my mind is all a tizzy with how much this tale got me thinking in respect to the growth and potential future of the Rosegarden relationship.
I’m not trying to imply that I’m taking this as a sign of their endgame. Nah. That would be too premature of me. But it did get me thinking and excited for them in respect to Oscar’s continued development.
I think what I loved and enjoyed the most out of this tale is how much the Boy reminded me of my favourite little prince and how his endearing love for his Warrior made me think of how much Oscar looks to Ruby as someone to believe in and perhaps, even fall in love with.
Tumblr media
And what got me the most was the line about the Boy wishing he could’ve been there for his Warrior the same way she had been there for him and by extension the people of his village.
That line hit me deep since that’s exactly how Ruby has been with Oscar from the moment the two met!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out of everyone amongst the hero team, Ruby has supported Oscar the most from the start. She’s always stood by him. Looked out for him. Protected him and believed in him or supported him even when others were reluctant about that.
She was the first person to mention how brave he is in spite of his fears. And above all else, Ruby inspired Oscar to be a stronger person. Not just for himself and the huntsmen in his care; like his teammates. But for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Boy was inspired by the Warrior to become a stronger man, not just for himself but also the people of his village. Not only that but I loved how the young man even wanted to be strong enough to support his Warrior too
“…I wish I could have been there for her,” he said slowly, “the way she was there for us.”
I love that. I love that line because it reminds me of everything I’ve been saying about Oscar and his inspiration from the Little Prince.
What was the lesson the Fox taught the Prince? Love and responsibility. To be responsible for the people who love and support you just as much as you love and support them.
I got the same vibe from this story from the relationship between the Boy and the Warrior. The sad reality is that the Boy never got a chance to be there entirely for his Warrior and thus she was believed to have died alone; never truly knowing the whole truth of how much she meant to him and how much he loved her.
This is a parallel that I’m hoping for in V8 in respect to Oscar’s side of the story with him on his own in Mantle with only Oz. I’m hoping that during his journey back to Atlas; Oscar comes to terms with his feelings for Ruby. What would even be amazing is if at some point, the tale of the Warrior in the Woods is brought to life and told in the main series.
I would absolutely love it if at some point Oz would tell Oscar the Tale of the Warrior in the Woods when the little prince starts thinking about his rose. Even better, what if…“The Warrior in the Woods” is how Oscar learns the “Fox’s lesson to the Little Prince”?
Imagine if…Oz, fairy tale and it through hearing that story and learning of the Boy’s dedication to his Warrior that it helps Oscar realize how much Ruby means to him!
Overall, what I’m mainly anticipating is for Oscar to come to terms with his true deepest feelings for Ruby. For me, I would love it if Oscar really is no different than the Boy in the fairy tale.
What would even be more of a trip is if Oscar is a descendant of the Boy or meets someone in his travels who is related to that boy in the tale and it’s a story and lesson that’s been passed down throughout their family for generations.
I know that might be pushing it a little bit but it’s not a bad concept. Either that or…Oz is the one who tells Oscar the Tale of the Warrior in the Woods. It would make sense for Oscar to hear that tale through Oz since, ironically, isn’t he the one who compiled the Fairy Tales from Remnant book? Correct me if I’m wrong. I know his notes are a feature of the book.
Anyways,  either way, I want to see Oscar realize how much he loves Ruby and it’s his love for her that further fuels his drive to support and protect her.
The Boy never got his chance to be there to protect his Warrior. While he kept her legacy alive through her story, the sad truth is the Warrior died alone never knowing how the Boy felt for her.
This is something I’m expecting NOT to be repeated with Rosegarden. I want to see Oscar promise to Ruby that he will always be there for her; fighting by her side for the cause they both believe him: Saving humanity. And above all else, I want to see Oscar realize his love for his rose in the hopes of one day telling her that to her face.
While I don’t know if we’ll have Ruby return Oscar’s feelings. Regardless, this is what I’m anticipating to see at least for Oscar’s side of things and this fairy-tale gave me more believe for that. Then again, it’s just a story and only time will really tell for what the CRWBY Writers have in store for V8. But a squiggle meister can wonder and hope, right?
In the meantime, like I said, I’m excited for the official release of Fairy Tales of Remnant.
I don’t plan on reading any more of the previewed stories though. I don’t know about some folks, but for this squiggle meister, I more want to wait till the book is out so I can hopefully get a hard copy because I do want to own the book itself.
That way I can read it through, make notes of things and always have that stuff on hand when I want to make a point of analysis for future musings and headcanon posts. Plus I really want that book. This is one of the sure-fire times where RoosterTeeth will actually get my money. (Still waiting patiently on dem Oscar merch though).
So with that being said, I think “The Warrior in the Woods” will be the ONLY story preview I will read and talk about for now.
I know there are previews for the other stories available but I’d rather not read them now. I think I’ll wait for the full book to go through and give my official thoughts then. We’ll see. Until then, this is all I got to say for now folks.

Calling Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer a disappointment would infer that I believed that the book would be good in the first place. Like so many others, I grew up with Twilight and enjoyed it. Before I found the likes of Shelley and Austen, women like Meyer and Rowling enthralled me in their imperfect fantasies. The latter of these women being my main source of disappointment has become a constant, Meyer just blindsided me! I was unaware of Midnight Sun until Meyer’s announcement made on the 4th of May, 2020, although I had heard of leaked chapters and publishing setbacks in the past. Leading up to the novel being released, just two days ago, my other Twi-hard gal-pals and I were elated. We preordered the books, we reminisced about Team Jacob memorabilia and counted down the days until we’d be able to get the books in our hands and relive the magic.
When I marched into my local Barnes and Noble on August 4th, 2020, a stack of hardcover Midnight Sun books sat exclusively on a table right by the checkout. My friend Samantha and I quickly grabbed a copy for each of us, paid nearly thirty dollars a book and were out of the door in less than five minutes. The book was heavy. Like, alarmingly large. One hundred and sixty pages longer than Twilight heavy. Before I get into the nitty gritty about what I did and didn’t like about the book, I'd like to make it apparent that I know the original Twilight series is seriously problematic. I'm not going to go into too much detail about the many issues with character portrayal in the original books (like the fact that Bella literally fainted when Edward kissed her, or the obvious, him being a stalker/murderer thing)I am just here to talk about the wonderful atrocities that we would have never had without Midnight Sun.
I think the thing that excited me most about this book was that I knew that canon couldn’t drastically change. Like many others, The Cursed Child and J.K. Rowlings Twitter has me permanently scarred. Collectively, we were allowed to recant the things about the series we loved, reconnect with characters we freely enjoy and maybe even get to know them more. I will say, we did get to know Edward and the Cullen family a lot more. What I didn’t expect was that I was going to strongly dislike more and more characters with each chapter passing. Particularly Edward. Edward Cullen was probably my first literary crush. I read the Harry Potter series in elementary school, so no, I wasn’t crushing on our favorite boy-wizard, I wanted to be Harry Potter, not date a Harry Potter-type. The Twilight series was different, I read the first two books when I entered the sixth grade, before anyone from the opposite sex could even tell I was a girl. Edward was my dream-boat. He noticed the plain, bookish girl and was openly in love with her. Her clumsy nature was what endured him to her. Her shyness was intriguing. I, like so many awkward, nerdy girls my age, craved that attention. The fact that Bella ritualistically described him as perfect definitely didn't help lower my standards for men, either. Something that I didn’t expect when reading Midnight Sun was that I’d eventually find my Original Boy Crush to be repetitive, clingy and annoying. For this, I directly blame Meyer. Realistically, the original series ended so loosely that it seemed a sequel series with Nessie and Jacob at the center was inevitable. Instead, collectively we were robbed thirty dollars a head to foolishly read a story that we already knew from the perspective of a boy we shouldn’t have found endearing in the first place. For this, I am to blame. Somewhere deep in my subconscious, I knew that this book would be bad, I bought it anyway. Jo Rowling trained us for this kind of disappointment, a trap that I would fall into time and time again.
What I was most intrigued to read about were two very different events that we saw in Twilight. First, the initial classroom scene when Edward smells Bella for the first time. Secondly, in the ballet studio when Edward is forced to drink Bella's blood in order to save her from becoming a vampire.
Both of these retellings were the least disappointing scenes from Midnight Sun, they almost made the entire read worth it. Almost. Reading Edwards initial reaction to Bella was genuinely fun to read, he goes into so much depth about how mundane his second life is until he meets this girl and is transported into super-serial killer mode. A direct quote from page 12 is “I could snap four or five of their necks per second, I estimated. It would not be noisy. The right side would be the lucky side; they would not hear me coming.” I was hooked! This was the kind of crazy, outlandish shit I couldn’t wait to read, and for a while, this type of language was persistent. Edward was a certified freak! And his entire family knew it. I, like Emmett and Jasper, found myself waiting for Edward to snap. There had to be a reason why Stephenie Meyer wrote this, right? There had to be some ultimate secret that we didn’t know, I convinced myself this. My darkest fantasies started to form... Maybe Edward would run all the way to Alaska and kill the first human that agitated him? Maybe he’d go on some secret sex-capade in an attempt to eleviate his stress? I dunno! I’m not the author! But maybe I should be because both of those options seem a lot more exciting than the secret we got. Basically, his family was like “it’s cool if you kill her or turn her, we don’t really care either way, just stop being annoying about this.” ….Not the route I would have taken, but it did seem practical.
After Edward's first couple weeks of deciding if he should kill Bella or not, the book started to drag. We already knew that they’d fall in love, we’ve heard that he is a sick, masochistic lion, and I’m pretty sure we read a description of Bella blushing on every other page. I started to get bored, but I knew I had to keep going. I was committed to reading the entire book, like a true fan, but I found myself getting irritated and wanting to skip ahead. In the ten years that it took for this book to get published, Stephanie Meyer did not become a better writer and her vocabulary hasn’t changed in the slightest. “Infinitesimal” isn’t the only adjective worth using, Stephenie, please get a thesaurus.
By the time I got to the blood drinking, I was too bored to even care. Edward described drinking Bella's blood as a decapitation and I was envious. Having my head severed from my body honestly seemed like a better alternative than having to continue reading the book (ok that’s a little extreme, but you get what I mean. I was fucking over it.) …. And there were four more chapters to go. I finished those chapters less than an hour ago and I honestly can’t tell you if there was anything worth reading within those moments.
All in all, I love the original Twilight series. I think they are so ridiculous but they are romantic and fun and easy to enjoy, but I won’t find myself returning to Midnight Sun or recommending it to anyone because I do believe reading it was a waste of time. Anything we gained from this behemoth of a book, we could have gotten from a Tweet (Jo Rowling style!) it would have been cheaper and easier on all of us. Hopefully Stephenie Meyer will use this cash grab to settle down and spend the next decade of her life writing the sequel series we deserve.

Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends Preview - Story 6, “Troubled Waters”
Tumblr media
Interior illustration from The Hunt Never Ends story, “Troubled Waters”
We’re almost there - the book releases one week from today!
I am a very special kind of stressed, lemme tell you.
This preview is of the final story in the story collection and my personal favorite: “Troubled Waters.” If you didn’t know, this is a preview for my upcoming story collection, Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends. It’s a book, but it’s something in-between a novel and a short story collection.
Each story in the book is individual and stands on its own, but they also go in order and build upon each other. So I’m not sure if one should really call it a novel, but it’s also different than just unrelated short stories. It bridges the gap between the two mediums.
Anyway, here’s another preview - enjoy!
For more info on the book itself, you can also check out this post. Also be sure to check out the Hunt Never Ends tag for a whole lot more book previews!
And remember - Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends is available for preorder (digital only; physical available on release date) on Amazon.com!

------------
There were a lot of things Caiden knew how to do. Clean a sword. Maintain a bow or a crossbow, even customize the latter almost beyond recognition. Make his own arrows or bolts. Investigate a crime scene. Bandage a wound, make a tourniquet, brew a potion, hunt, forage, track, forge his own tools or weapons, carve wood, build houses or fortifications, command an army, cook meals…
But one thing he didn’t know how to do was read. And it pissed him off.
The beds in Castle Greywatch weren’t much. Some straw, changed daily, for a mattress, and some sackcloth to cover it. Any Venatori better off liked to buy their own beds, but Caiden wasn’t exactly drowning in coin. Following the dullahan encounter on Samhain, Kiya had given him a feather pillow as thanks – he didn’t want to think it had belonged to Relgar, but it probably had – and that was the nicest part of his sleeping arrangement in the castle.
He shifted his back against that pillow, currently squashed between him and the shoddy headboard and struggling to retain any fluffiness as a result. He tried to focus. Focus, he tended to be good at, but staring at the book in his hand almost made him wonder. It was a much smaller bestiary than the one Gwen had been given by Illikon, with a likewise smaller amount of illustrations.
If he had any sense, he would have just asked Gwen for help with reading. But his dignity – or maybe his stubbornness, or both – had long since thrown that idea out. He had all day to struggle with this, unless something came up. So, he reached to the nightstand beside him for the bottle of whiskey there. If there was something Castle Greywatch did have, it was decent booze.
Not that it seemed to be helping right now. It made things a little fuzzier, maybe. Slightly dulled that deep, gnawing, empty pain inside him, but not enough.
After they left Illikon, that feeling had grown louder, rowdier – tried to make itself more known. Whatever it was found claws to dig into his spine, using them to reach his skull. There, it chewed into him, left seeds of growing frustration – restless anger he couldn’t seem to muzzle. Any unwanted feelings of loneliness, of being lost, only got worse. A pulling, a need, telling him to do something.
After a few nights spent at Greywatch, it had grown to take a shape he almost recognized: hunger. Impossibly deep hunger that absolutely nothing satisfied.
That was why he couldn’t think. Not the drink. Not the page in front of him, covered in small symbols supposedly forming words, all of which made no sense. It was the smoldering flame in him turning into an empty inferno, and he had no idea how to put it out – or how to give it more fuel to burn.
Caiden’s eyes lost focus on the bestiary, staring at something inside rather than out. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand, his grip on the book loosening, letting it droop.
Some tentative excitement came creeping up the stairs just outside the room. Caiden snapped the book shut and shoved it under his pillow, folding his arms and feeling an awful lot like a five-year-old trying to hide something embarrassing.
Except the bottle of whiskey. Couldn’t really hide that. Not like it mattered, anyway; she already knew it.
Gwen rounded the corner, peering into the room past the partially ajar door. She gave a few tentative knocks, eyes on him.
Caiden grunted. Yeah. Come in. You already have.
When she stepped into the room, Caiden instantly noted she was fully suited up, wearing her leather jerkin, belt of potions, weapons… Which for her, unlike him, was unusual to see when they were around the castle. Something was up.
Gwen paused, looked at him, followed his gaze to the far wall obviously in search of something interesting there, then at him again.
He met her stare evenly. “What?”
She shot the whiskey bottle a glance. “It’s a little early to be drinking, isn’t it?”
Caiden shrugged. Did that actually matter right now?
“Sure… Okay.” Cool worry filled the room, emanating from her, lapping jittery and mildly annoying waves against him. Gwen fumbled with a letter she’d been holding halfway behind her back. “Well, everyone in the great hall was talking missions, and a new one just came in. I snatched it up – thought it might be interesting. It’s not really like anything we’ve done before…”
An unnatural urge to snap at her, tell her to get on with it, rose in his throat and forced him to swallow it. Barely. It settled in his stomach, uncomfortable and heavy, and he tried to tell himself not to be a half-drunk asshole.
“What is it?” he prompted, voice coming out too flat as he struggled to find his usual patience.
That made Gwen screw up her brow at him more than a little, but she said, “There’s a village in the mountains not far from here – secluded little place called Norhaven. It doesn’t seem very noteworthy, except it has its own freshwater spring coming out of a mountain. But now a monster’s attacking them over the water, or that’s what they’re claiming. They say it’s been burning people, of all things, and it only attacks in the dark.”
For half a second, Caiden’s mind stuttered and ground to a halt. The first time he met something that only attacked in the dark, it had been his first monster hunt. It wasn’t something he liked recalling.
But he nodded.
“They… want us there as soon as possible,” Gwen added, almost tentatively. No, not almost. Definitely. Her nerves were frayed. She was worried about something, and it only seemed to get worse the longer she looked at him.
Caiden didn’t much like people worrying about him. He never had.
So he huffed, trying to figure out how to give what she might consider a ‘normal’ response. He stood and popped his neck in a short shock of painful relief. Even if it didn’t help the pinching headache he’d gotten from being bent over a book and trying to read for so long, it felt slightly better.
“Maybe we should wait until tomorrow morning,” said Gwen, still eying him like he was sick.
He eyed her right back. “I’m fine.”
“Caiden, you’ve drunk way more than usual lately – and that’s already saying something – and way earlier in the day. You know how terrible that is for you, right? And besides that, you’re talking even less.”
Gwen frowned. Some kind of hurt came off her then, enough to make his insides almost start to shrivel.
“You can trust me,” she said at length. “If something’s wrong, talk to me about it. Wouldn’t you be the first one to tell me that you need to know if I have something going on, so it doesn’t jeopardize our mission?”
Caiden’s jaw tightened, hard, before he gave it permission. You know she’s right. Yeah, she was right, and he couldn’t tell her. Every word, every phrase that came to mind sounded dismissive. Uncaring, or at least untrusting.
But Gwen gave up fairly quickly, still wearing a frown. She nodded and said, “Okay. Want to leave in an hour or two? It isn’t far to ride. We’ll get there before sundown and we can find a place to sleep.”
Caiden nodded. “Sounds good. I’ll meet you by the stables.”
With that, Gwen turned and left – though not without throwing a quick, and decidedly worried, look back at him over her shoulder.
(More preview under the cut!)
------------
“These attacks,” said Gwen, “do they usually happen around the spring, under the trees?”
Asger nodded. “Mostly.”
“And has anyone been in that cave since it started?”
“Where the source is? Gods, no. Gotta have a deathwish to walk into the dark after this thing.”
“Yeah,” Caiden said, already walking around the trees and toward the cave. Behind him, Asger sputtered, while Gwen’s quiet footfalls and building, anxious excitement followed in his wake.
“Go on back to town and get some rest, Asger,” Gwen called back to him.
Caiden stopped before the mouth of the cave and squinted into it, reaching for a potion on his belt: one to enhance his senses. Beside him now, Gwen shifted, tension radiating from her like constant lightning.
“If you drink that and that thing burns you, it’ll really hurt,” she said. “I heard some Venatori pass out from pain if something catches them with one of those.”
Caiden huffed. “I didn’t last time. I won’t this time either.”
Just as he drained the potion bottle, Asger’s panting caught up with them again as he stopped by their side, drawing his bodkin dagger and holding it up in a shaking hand. Gwen blinked at him, and Caiden furrowed his brow.
Asger’s face slowly drained of color as he stared at Caiden’s eyes – a side-effect of the potion was his eyes glowing. Not much, just softly, but it tended to scare the hell out of the average person.
“You probably shouldn’t come with us,” Gwen offered slowly, like she was trying to calm Asger down from some fit of panic. “Especially since… your weapon there looks like something my partner might pick his teeth with.”
“This’s a finely-made dagger, I’ll have you know,” Asger blurted. “And I’m the watchman here, this is part of my job. Let’s go on then—”
He stepped forward, but Caiden snapped one hand out and got a firm grip on Asger’s arm, stopping him in his tracks.
“I’m on point,” he said. “You shouldn’t come, but if you’re following us, then stay behind me. Gwen…”
“On it. I’ll cover your rear— I mean, the rear.” A blush quickly rose in her cheeks. “Tom ruined me,” Caiden faintly heard her mutter under her breath.
Caiden grunted. Then he turned and led the way.
Didn’t take long for his eyes to adjust, then to adapt, thanks to that potion. Faint moonlight spilling in let him see limestone walls slick with condensation and a violently gushing spring, churning the water on the far end of the cavern at the base of the wall. Spitting it out straight into the reservoir, the flow of it turning gentle by the time it left the cave.
Heavy mist hung in the air here, maybe kicked up by the water. But something didn’t seem right.
Then he realized why.
Fear washed down upon them like frigid rain – so much fear that, for half a second, it froze every muscle in Caiden’s body. His nerves pulled taut, ready to break and snap down on him like a whip, hard enough to leave a few more scars on his back. Hand shooting to his sword hilt in a white-knuckle grip, he drew in a sharp breath and fought the chill that ran fast up his spine and forced him to be afraid.
This wasn’t natural. Gwen, from the way she was suddenly fumbling with her gear, seemed to know it.
Asger, on the other hand, didn’t. He bellowed out a hoarse shout, nearly fell spinning around to face the exit, and ran for the cave mouth.
All around them, a shrill voice echoed, “Leave this place!”
It spoke the words very clearly – not the gibberish he’d been told about.
Everything happened at once. A rush of air ripped by him, trailing cold in its wake, like off the surface of the spring itself. Asger screamed, his heavy boots scuffing the stone as something made him stumble and fall. Caiden charged forward at a surging shadow, blade ready to swing.
And an arrow lodged itself in his upper arm with a hard lance of pain and a meaty thunk.
Caiden coughed out a grunt and staggered from the impact, the arrow locking up his sword arm and stopping him mid-strike. Whatever had come past him and attacked Asger seemed already gone, moving faster than he could even understand.
Gwen appeared beside him in an instant, hand on his uninjured left arm and sputtering apologies. “Caiden!? I – gods— I shouldn’t have tried to shoot it, it moved so fast—”
The cave around him was far from silent. Asger swore as he scrambled to his feet, Gwen kept on apologizing as she tried in vain to tug Caiden out of the cave until he, halfway in a stupor, finally staggered along after her.
Boots against stone. Grass under their feet, bright moonlight overhead. Plenty of pain in his right arm that twitched useless and limp at his side.
These sensations stayed, but something was missing.
He’d heard once that silence was golden. He had never understood what ‘silence’ entirely meant. This was the closest he’d ever come.
The whispers had stopped – the fleeting memories. All of it. The fear from the monster was gone – his, Asger’s, Gwen’s – he felt no terror from anyone, though they still looked afraid. Sounded afraid. Moved like it. But he couldn’t sense it. It didn’t invade his mind, twist into him, and try to make itself at home.
And he suddenly felt blind. Deaf. Neither of those things, yet both at once – because it was gone. A sense he had known for his entire life, something that was always there. Gone, no trace left. He felt dumb.
Caiden blinked. Furrowed his brow. His shoulders tensed, pulled against the arrow still biting deep into his arm, and made him wince.
What the hell was going on?
In the corner of his vision, he saw Gwen fumble for something in a pouch on her belt, only to draw out the shattered neck of a bottle. She swore and threw it aside, turning her attention to him instead as he stared straight ahead at nothing in particular.
“Caiden – Caiden, hey, look at me!” Gwen grabbed the harness around his shoulders and tugged on it hard enough for his eyes to snap to her and stare. Her face was pale. “That arrow was poisoned. Okay? You’re probably woozy right now; it’s very fast-acting…”
“Gwen—”
She sucked in a hard breath and blurted, “Caiden if you say ‘I’m fine’ I swear to Athena I will punch you in the stomach.”
He paused and cocked his head at her, his mouth ever so slightly ajar.
“Listen,” she said, voice quivering and straining to sound strong, “the bottle for the antidote I had on me broke – I have more of it, but it’s in my saddlebag. We have to get you to the inn so we can get that arrow out and I can give you the antidote. Okay?”
“Just pull it out,” Caiden mumbled, his words coming out slurred.
“I’m not doing that, you don’t just suddenly pull an arrow out – there are procedures for this!”
One sharp tug on his uninjured arm later, and he was following her back down the mountain path, both of them led by a stumbling Asger. The watchman looked at a deep welt on his forearm, his flesh twisted and reddened – what was left of it. Most of it had burned off entirely. Asger swore more colorfully than the average sailor, wearing a deep grimace.
He separated from them with a few hurried words to Gwen – words Caiden should’ve heeded, but paid no attention to – and disappeared into a nearby home. Gwen kept leading the way, up the stairs and into the inn, still tugging on Caiden’s uninjured arm.
“By Jove!” the innkeeper shouted, starting up in an instant from where he’d been sitting in his quiet tavern.
He quickly started throwing questions, which Gwen just as quickly deflected. She mostly did that by dumping a handful of coins on the counter and asking for two rooms. All the while, Caiden leaned his uninjured arm on the nearest table and pulled in one deep breath after another.
Pain quickly found its way across his body, tightening every muscle and settling heavily in his chest, like having molten lead poured into his lungs. It didn’t leave him any room to breathe, and that didn’t leave him much room to think.

About Time For An Update
Phew. Okay. The blog still exists. The power still works. Water hasn’t gone mouldy in the sink. Good good.
In other words, HI HOW ARE YOU LONG TIME NO POST?!?!?!
The last month has been kind of… tumultuous, and keeping my head on straight has taken pretty much all of my energy. However, things seem to be clearing a bit now and I feel like I can come up for air 🙂 So, it’s time for an update!
Writing is dribbling along. Some weeks have been better than others, but it’s there trickling away in the background, and some words eventually adds up to more words which eventually adds up to lots of words which eventually means Things Get Done. Right now, I’m “working” on Moon Shot, a middle grade sci fi adventure story set in the Witch Blue universe (that’s the Myer Briggs personality-based magic one – yes, it’s sci fi fantasy). I kind of lowkey promised one of my classes last year to put them all in a novel, (yes, that’s this book) and it took a Really Long Time to figure out how to tell a story with about twenty-five characters who all needed approximately equal screen time.
The answer, apparently, is to use an epistolary style. Epistolary used to mean including letters in the book, but these days it can refer to any other kind of text type. So Moon Shot so far includes emails, diagrams, maps, transcripts of recorded interviews, narrative, diary entries and even a short news article. It’s a bunch of fun, and hopefully the kids will approve of their cameos when they finally get to see it 😀 This one’s due at the end of October, but that will depend on October being a Good Writing Month, so we’ll see. Either way, I’m aiming for release in the first half of next year. (Ideally first quarter, but I have a feeling this one will blow out when it comes to formatting, so maybe second quarter.)
Apart from that, I’ve also been doing a lot of short story writing, specifically flash fiction (stories under 1500 words). Some of the longer ones will eventually appear as Inklets (in, like, 2022 or 2023, because that’s how far ahead we’re currently scheduled! o.O), but in the meantime my Q4 release this year will be a little anthology of flash fiction called It All Changes Now. More on that maybe next week or the week after – I can’t wait to share the cover, it’s very shiny and features my favourite colours!
After this it’ll be back to the Storm Foxes world for A Stag Of Hope And Memory, which at this point should be the conclusion to the series (yup, planning on a duology here). I have a couple of chapters of this written from back in May or June, but I needed to let it sit a bit longer before I could figure out where I wanted to take the story. I have Plans now, so I’m tentatively excited about getting back into this world after Moon Shot.
Apart from writing, there’s been lots of editing and formatting and so forth. How To Map came out two weeks ago (ish), but I haven’t done any announcements or anything because even though the ebook released, it wasn’t actually proof-checked >.< I didn’t leave myself enough time to do all the interior artwork (diagrams etc) and then didn’t have enough time to order a print copy for proofing before the ebook was due to release (and I’d already pushed the release date back once; Amazon only lets you do it once or you get banned from preorders for a year). Blah.
But anyway, that is FINALLY done and dealt with – I just have to input the corrections for the ebook and reload those files, THEN I can do an official release post here, and THEN I can cross that book off the to-do list.
After that comes edits and formatting for Liana Brooks’ All I Want For Christmas Is A Reaper. You’ll hear more about that later this week, because we’re about to launch a Kickstarter campaign for it, with more shiny Fan Kits, yay!
And of course, there are ALWAYS Inklets to be working on. Right now I’m in the throes of initial formatting and blurb writing for the 2021 Inklets, which is all kinds of chaos. I’d hoped to be a lot further along with these than I am, but worst case scenario I’ll just do them in two semester batches rather than doing the whole year at once, I guess. Blah.
So anyway, that’s writing and what not for the moment! And hopefully we are back to a more regular blogging schedule 🙂

FAQ
General Questions
Are these the same mods that did [insert failed zine here]? No. None of our mods have ever run a failed zine. Some of us have been contributors for them though so we know your pain. We are doing everything we can to be sure that doesn't happen to us. All our mods have access to the zine email and socials as well as contributor submissions so if one of us were to disappear the rest would be able to pull it together. Finances are being handled by our head mods (umbraja and kdxart) who are both professional graphic designers with experience in small business management and print publications. The rest of the mods are being given updates and could take over finances if the head mods were to die in a firey laptop explosion.
Are these the same mods that did last year's Kidge Zine? Yes. Most of us anyway. We lost a few but also added some new faces and learned a whole lot - mostly about the horrors of shipping and taxes. We did a good job last year and hope to do even better this time around! We've also padded our schedule so there shouldn't be as many delays.
I'm so excited - when will the zine come out? As of right now we are shooting for a delivery date of early June, 2020. We may have an early (kickstart) round of preorders in the new year (with Valentines Day merch) for those who are super dedicated to getting this thing made but that's not set in stone. We may modify the schedule if we fall behind or need to take more orders to reach our stretch goals. See our Tentative Schedule for more information.
OMG I NEED this, how can I help make this zine a thing? The best thing anyone can do is reblog our posts to help get the word out. If you want to do more you could make a money donation to help cover costs (and enter to win a Limited Edition Bundle). Just buy Pidge some coffee on Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/kidgezine.
Zines are usually self-financing so why are you talking about money donations? Because it lets those of us who have extra money subsidize the cost for those that can't afford it so we all get a better product. A self-financed publication has to price itself to cover the full cost of production but that severely limits the number of artists and writers we can put into it and what merch we can sell alongside it. Last year we had over 50 contributors create a 200 page full color book with lots of merch and priced it all considerably under cost so that our community could actually afford to buy it. We still lost money in the end but it was less than our finance officer had put aside to cover it and that is thanks to the many, wonderful people who were willing to kindly donate.
How do I go about donating to help cover costs? First, thank you so much for the willingness to help out. All you need to do is buy Pidge some coffee on Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/kidgezine. This will also enter you for a chance to win a Limited Edition Bundle when the zine comes out.
Are profits from zine sales going to a charity of some kind? No. Unless you would consider next year's Kidge Zine a charity, then sure. Truth is we don't expect to make money. We hope it does better than last year so we don't end up covering a loss but we're pretty sure it's not going to profit. In the very unlikely event that we do turn a profit the funds will stay in the Kidge Zine account for use next year.
Contributor Questions
Will contributors be paid for their work on the zine? We would love to pay our contributors but, due to legal and logistical concerns, the staff voted that no one should get paid for this endeavor - not even the staff. We are giving contributors a free digital copy of the zine and a discount on buying the physical copy and merch. The discount amount will depend on stretch goals so we can't provide specifics at this time.
I want to give you content for this zine, how do I do that? Read over the Requirements and fill out the applications listed there.
What kind of content is allowed? We're pretty chill but we do have a few Requirements to follow. Check that link for specifics but the short of it is pretty much anything featuring Keith and Pidge in some sort of fantasy situation. It doesn't have to be romantic, AUs and canon are both allowed, so long as those two are together in some way. We're not even going to limit it to the usual digital art and narrative writing so if you want to do something unusual give it a try. We'll accept: cosplay photos, sculptures, journals, poetry, songs, schematics, editorials, things I can't even think of right now - pretty much anything Kidge related is welcome.
I want to write but English is not my first language, is that OK? Some of my favorite authors don't speak English at all and some of my favorite fanfics are written by people who only know it as a second or even third language. So long as you can get your writing translated to English our staff will work with you to get it polished and sounding natural. You just have to be willing to go through that editing process with us.
Will everyone who applies be accepted as a contributor? We're going to try and include everyone but since the zine is a print publication it's going to cost real money for every piece we include. If we get too many submissions and put all of them in the book it would end up costing too much for most of y'all to afford. Nobody wants that. So we might have to leave some things out of the book itself but will be more than happy to include any work that gets left out in the pdf version so long as it follows all the rules. This will allow us to produce a better product while not excluding anyone from participation.
How will contributors be chosen? Our staff will use the samples provided in your application to judge your average quality of work so be sure to give us good examples. We will be looking at your work only, not your popularity or participation in the fandom, so don't worry if you're new to the ship or just don't know anyone. Some of our staff don't know many people and our production designer hasn't even seen the show (she just does very good work). Art will be judged on overall aesthetic, perspective/proportions appropriate for the style, composition/balance, and technique. Writing will be judged on overall readability, characterization, plot, style, and flow. We will not judge grammar because we want to include non-native English speakers. Just be ready for an editing process where we'll help you get the grammar fixed before publication.
When will I know if I'm accepted as a contributor? Acceptance emails will be sent out November 1st. Everyone should get an email so if you don't get yours then ask a mod to see what's up. We had trouble with emails getting lost in junk filters last year so be sure to check for that.
Do you have a deadline for submissions? We have multiple deadlines to keep y'all on track but the finished work should be turned in by February 15th. See the Tentative Schedule for more information.
Is this canon only or are AUs allowed? We're not gonna limit setting so canon or any other universe is allowed. Have fun with it.
What if I don't want to write/draw something Fantasy themed? Fantasy is such a broad theme that we are going to be strict about it this time but we're certain y'all will be able to find something you like that fits. Pretty much anything that's not limited by real world physics is, technically, Fantasy. So canon universe is Fantasy. So are superheroes, any sort of mythology, folklore, most horror, sci-fi, steam punk, supernatural, occult, and way too much else for me to list.

Halloween Book Recommendations!👻☠️🎃....Part 1
Hello, my loves!! If you saw my last post, then you know what’s coming. If not, let me tell you....I wanted to do a Halloween Book Recommendation post (long one) in the beginning of the month since it’s pre Halloween month-as I call it for right now. That didn’t happen for the last couple days because I was busy. But here we are! Now...be amazed of allllll the choices you got and even if some may not be your genre or type, that is okay!
📖 The Diviners Trilogy by Libba Bray
This series is one of my favorites...sadly I haven’t finished reading the 2nd book (Lair of Dreams), but with my Halloween binge I am planning on rereading and finishing it. This is 1920’s New York...nuff said. But anyways, we have different persoectives told in 3rd person (I have no idea which 3rd, cuz those I can’t remember for the life of me), who has abilities to see ghosts/future, etc... aka Diviners. Basically physics in other words. In the first one, they battle out this evil monster dude (which is creepy...the monster dude). Lair of Dreams deals with this mystery illness...I can’t say much for this one since I haven’t finished it yet. Before the Devil Breaks You is the 3rd and final book and I don’t know what that one is about.
The audiobooks-y’all do them-I have no comments. I read The Diviners physically (I didn’t really get into audiobooks till recently this year). I did try and listen to Lair of Dreams, but it wasn’t for me. i may give it another try, so no promises on this though. I have heard that they are really good, so hopefully they are as well for you.

📖Stalking Jack the Ripper Series by Kerri Maniscalco
This series is one of my favorites! I’m gonna say that for so many here, but I love this one to pieces to where I preordered the 3rd book (Escaping From Houdini) and also the 4th and final one (Capturing the Devil. CTD is being shipped on the 10th this month (6 DAYS) from my Barnes and Noble location, so I don’t know if it will arrive that day or not.
Anyways, this series follows Audrey Rose Wadsworth in the late 1800s dealing with the Ripper murders. The second involves Dracula, third is Houdini, and the fourth is H.H Holmes. Yes, America’s first serial killer! Sorry, I’m very excited about that. Being a girl in the 1800s/1900s, you’re not really have much to live for. Audrey rather do things that guys can do (forensics in this case), then being at tea parties. I don’t blame you, girl! Then, Thomas Cressworth comes in as well and they both solves these crimes together with the help of Audrey’s uncle (a mortician). If that doesn’t get your interest, then Idk what will.
Tumblr media
📖Confessions Series by James Patterson
This series is more mystery than horror. I personally love James Patterson and he has always been one of my favorite authors. This one follows the Angel siblings after their parents’ mystery death (that mystery is the center of the first one (Confessions of a Murder Suspect). These siblings aren’t necessarily ordinary in some since. I don’t want to give away anything, but meds has the reason for that.
Tandy Angel (main character here) solves these murders/crimes throughout the books. The second one contains school murders (not shootings, thankfully) (Confessions: The Private School Murders). The third (Confessions: The Paris Mysteries) takes place in Paris, France. I have not read this one nor the 4th one (Confessions: The Murder of an Angel) so I don’t have any opinions on these ones. It is really good and if you’re a sucker for mysteries and James Patterson boos, then here you go!
Tumblr media
📖The Women’s Murder Club by James Patterson
Another Patterson series...I’m a sucker for them. At first, I had called this the Number series because I didn’t know what the series was called and the only thing I knew was that they have numbers in the title.
Meet Lindsay Boxer (main character), homicide inspector for San Fran; Claire Washburn, medical examiner; Jill Bernhardt, assistant D.A.; and Cindy Thomas, San Fran Chronicle writer. 4 amazing chicks who kick butt, form the Women’s Murder Club to solve these murders. Freakin girl power! The chapters are quite short, sometimes longer, but usually short, which if you’re good with that, then cool, if not, that’s okay! I’m pretty sure the latest book of the series published is the 17th one...maybe 18th....one of those two. These are the ones I currently have.
Tumblr media
📖The Merciless Series by Danielle Vega
If you love horror, possesion, all that stuff, you’ll love this series. I first discovered it on Facebook when the book trailer popped up. It was a interesting trailer and caught my tention. Couple years later, my senior year of high school, the book fair came (appears twice a year, this was the first appearance) and I had to buy it. It was $8 bucks, originally $10.99. If you are very religious, then maybe not this series. Lots of said people said its Mean Girls and the Craft mixed together.
The first two books follows Sophoa Flores as the main character. Sophia, being the new girl, befriends the 3 populare chicks (Plastics), who they want her to befriend this outsider (Brooklynn). Mean Girls basically but little bit reveresed. Then things happen. Spoilers, so I can’t really clarify it. Second is and it’s what the 2nd is also called....The Excorsim of Sophia Flores...DUN DUN DUNNNN. The third (Origins of Evil) is where Brooklynns story begins, so we know how Brooklynn became and what not. The 4th and final (The Last Rites) features a little bit of Sophia, but this main character is Berkley Hubbard, fresh out of rehab. Honestly, these books do scare me, but not like how when I watched the Conjuring the first time. Perfect read for Halloween season!
Tumblr media
📖Mrs. Peregrine Series by Ransom Riggs
Now, I have not been able to finish the dang first book, so Idk. From what I have read and remeber, it is really good! It’s kind of horro...I don’t particularly think it is, but others do. This has mixed media, mainly pictures, but fascinating ones! The four books follows Jacob Portman and his friends of peculiar aka they have abilities and their adventures they have. If you’ve seen the movis, then you understand what I mean. Ransom’s writing is one of my favorites and having pictures/media in them makes me happy. I am a visual person, so the pictures help me a lot.
Anways, the first book is where Jacob is in the peculiar world where the peculiars live in this never ending time loop of the same day, but they rewind time before bombs happen aka Poland in WW 2. I’ve heard so many amazing things of this series! Jesse the Reader (booktuber) LOVES this series and he will recommend it to the end of time.
Tumblr media
📖Visions Trilogy by Lisa McMann
These three books involve visions. If you have seen Medium (with Patricia...I cant remember her last name), then you will love Visions. They don’t involve any ghosts, so that’s a difference from Medium.
Here we have (Crash) Jules Demarco, who is seeing visions of this explosion everywhere. She realizes this explosion will happen very soon and she has to stop it before it happens. Not much, I know, but the next one (Bang) (sadly deals with a school shooting), her crush gets the visions this time. The third one (Gasp) has this random character who the two save last book ends up getting the visions then. This vision is a boat accident...a ferry to be precise, but nothing like Titanic...at least I don’t think so. This was a good series and really liked them. Easy to read in 1 day...unless y’all are busy and or a slow reader like me.
Tumblr media
📖The Asylum Series by Madeleine Roux
Horror, ghosts, random past lives stuff! I only have the first two books (Asylum and Sanctum), but I think there is a third and one or two novellas. I love these guys! You get some pictures and letters in the books, so cool!
Here is Dan Crawford, who is spending the summe at the New Hampshire College Prep program. Abby Valdez and Jordan (no last name was given) are his new found friends at the program. The catch of all this, the newly built dorms is where the Brookline Asylum used to be. The three friends uncover secrets of their pasts and families and such. It’s such a good series.
Tumblr media
📖The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer
The infamous Twilight books. Y’all may have expected this or may not have. I do not have an opinion on this series just yet. I recently read Twilight for the first time and really liked it. That said, hopefully I will get to the other books and see where my opinions lie.
Everyone knows what this series is about, but if not, come to me. Isabella (Bella) Swan moves from the heat of Arizona (I feel you Bella) to the rainy world of Forks, Washington. There, she meets the Cullen siblings...mainly Edward...who happens to be vampires. Bella and Edward get closer and start dating and what not. Ah yes, the infamous woods scene where Edward is like “Say it!” to Bella, it actually happens in the car so casually. This series contains a love triangle of a human, vampire, and a werewolf.
Tumblr media
📖The Chronicles of Vladmir Tod by Heather Brewer...okay it’s formerly Heather, but it is now Zac Brewer
I love this series...even though I only read the first two books and a little bit of the 3rd one. If you love vampires...well half human half vampire then yessss! Half human, Half Titan....Half human, half ghoul....if y’all watch anime, then you probably get the two references. Okay...onto the synopsis!
Vladmir Tod is the equivalent of...dang it what is the word....ahhh disgrace cuz he is half human and half vampire. In the vampire world, humans and vamps dont go together. He is raised by his Aunt Nelly, who of course knows he is half vampire. His best friend, Henry also knows. Throughout 8th Grade to 12th Grade, he’s gotta deal with bullies and vampire slayers. What a hard knock life for this dude.

tag game(s)
anï (i’m too exhausted to do three separate posts but i was tagged in three tag games over the past few days and i’d forgotten to do the last few games i was tagged in and i feel super guilty so here they are in one go)
i don’t know who to tag to do these rn because my brain is dead i am emotionally exhausted and i’m writing a fic that’s about halfway done so i’m gonna say tag anyone who wants to be tagged for any of these. i’m so sorry that i’m dead, i will be back alive again after may 10th, which is my AP exam day
six questions challenge
tagged by @simon--speaks
rules: answer the questions, then tag 9 people you want to get to know better!
Q1: Relationship status?
single bby
Q2: Favorite color?
maroon !
Q3: Top 3 ships?
snowbaz (wow) and uh. wow. idk who else. i wanna say my own ocs matchstick and summer (is that allowed? i’m making it allowed)
Q4: Lipstick or chapstick?
whenever i get to this question in any ask i freeze up because i use a tinted chapstick so i don’t look dead but like. it can also be seen as a lipstick because it has pigment. but. chapstick.
Q5: Last song I listened to?
Run by Hozier
Q6: Last movie I watched?
uhhh i watched like. 5 minutes of the emperor’s new groove a few days ago, and watched a documentary about obscure houses like 10 minutes before that. so. i’m gonna say the house documentary.
21 questions
i was tagged by @simon--speaks, @angelsfalling16, @wo2ash, @alixanderthequeer, @sharkmartini and @bazypitchandsimonsnow
rules: answer 21 questions then tag 21 people
nickname: anï, munchkin, menina, and my hebrew name is elisheva
height: the doctor says i’m 5′3.5″, but they can’t put fractions on IDs so according to the state i’m 5′4″ and i cling to that
last movie i saw: see above (so like. funky houses)
last thing i googled: (next town over) movie tavern. i’m not saying where it is exactly bc hah i don’t wanna be stalked but. i was looking at movie times because they have $5 movies every tuesday
favorite musician: frank iero. love that funky rat man and his funky music too (i’m gonna see him for the second time next month because i made the executive adult decision to say fuck it to my seizures and go see him anyway)
song stuck in my head: i don’t have one rn but usually it’s a song by the killers (when you were young is a usual one)
other blogs: none, actually! i didn’t delete my old tumblr purely bc i’m a nostalgic dumbass, but it’s a completely different login and it’s inactive so i don’t count it.
followers: 1,666 (originally i wasn’t gonna share the number but it hit this last night and i was like heh. nice)
following: 231
amount of sleep: 8ish hours! (spring break bby)
lucky numbers: 7, multiples of 3 (only in cases of knocking), and multiples of 2 (only in cases like volume)
dream job: writing and illustrating books! i have a variety of dream jobs within art, and even within the subcategory of books, but my top dream job is creating inclusive/diverse children’s books that represent a variety different ethnicities/races, religions, abilities, and identities so that children can see themselves represented in media
what i’m wearing: a black turtleneck, a bra, and marvel boxers. that’s it.
favorite food: soup in general. i make a kick ass matzo ball soup
language: english, conversational portuguese, i know a small small bit of japanese (i should know more given i was raised being taught it but i always struggled with it), and i know some spanish. i also plan on teaching myself ASL.
can i play an instrument: yes! i’ve been playing violin since i was 2. i wanna play guitar and i know some chords but i have small hands so it’s hard to find one that’s the right size that isn’t a shitty children’s guitar, and i sing! i’m an alto
favorite song: hnnghg please don’t make me pick................ i’d have to say choke on one another by death spells
random fact: so like. if you didn’t know already, i’m an LGBTQ+ youth activist on a national scale. i disappear on occasion because i’m doing something or another, and sometimes i post about it on my blog (speaking of i have exciting news that i heard, but at the same time, i’m pretty much booked every weekend from middle of next month until middle of july), but........ i hate networking. i loathe it. if i never had to network again, i’d be thrilled. networking is my absolute least favorite thing because i struggle at everyday conversation, much less networking with people at least 10-20 years my senior. sure it’s usually free publicity and i get great connections, but god. at what cost? and like.... it’s always after a really emotionally taxing event, so i’m already drained and then wow here’s a room full of adults who want my 18 year old input. please. just let me steal a cupcake then leave.
describe yourself in aesthetic things: dye stained fingernails and necks. cranked open windows during a spring shower. dried tears and breaking laughs. coffee stains and milky tea splashes. trembling fingers, writing instead of speaking because you’re too afraid, and finally breaking free--running through the rain. scabbing blood, fresh piercings. knowing you’re loved and not saying it because it doesn’t need to be spoken. the smell of a new canvas, paint splattered jeans, and art school sweaters. black skirts with docs, then fairy lights and soft blankets hidden behind sharp profanities and harsh disgust. the unexpected. the unknown. the ever-changing, unstoppable force of the shifting tides.
carry on questions
tagged by @goodbyedandelion, @isthisisagoodkiss @wo2ash,
1- favorite type of scone?
cranberry orange! one of the farms a county over has a market and they sell them there and they’re to die for (altho, i found a sour cherry scone recipe that i’ve perfected and my family loves them so they’re a close second now)
2- london or la?
i’ve never been to london, but i’m gonna have to go with london. i went to la last october to present in an awards show for my organization and i lowkey was underwhelmed. i’m very much a gloom and rain kinda person, and it was too dry and sunny there. although, i did think the huge succulents were sick as fuck. but yeah definitely london. i’m planning to spend a semester abroad there in a few years for an illustration program
3- kissing in a forest or holding hands under the stars?
i’m afraid of forests because we have a lot of wildlife and i don’t want to get mauled by a bear don’t mind me holding hands under the stars :)
4- jeans or suit?
suit suit suIT SUIT suit. i love wearing suits. my chest doesn’t cooperate and my hips always hate them but god i do love suits.
5- loose hair or pulled back hair?
mine looks better loose, and my sides/back are shaved but the top reaches my ears, so it gets annoying sometimes and i pull it up to keep it out of my face
6- vampires or dragons?
i wanna say both. i used to say “yknow a dragon but in human form would be hot” then i got called dragon fucker for like two years so out of pure spite i’m going with vampires.
7- what saying do you wish could be a spell?
(this one’s a very specific reference so hear me out) “i’ve got to go pee on her”  used to disorient and confuse the speech of the person casted upon. it’s one of my favorite quotes from scott pilgrim vs. the world (my favorite movie ngl) when scott’s brain can’t figure out two different sentences and he just says that. it’s so good and just fuckin weird that i love it.
8- which carry on character would you go on a coffee date with if you could?
depends tbh! if we’re talking date date, then penny because i would wife penny in 0.5 seconds, but if we’re talking friends getting coffee then 10000000% baz because i’d talk activism and identities with him
9- favorite carry on quote?
“he told me we would be stars” (i don’t have my book on me so i could be getting the line wrong), but it hit so hard for me. like it’s clear how davy manipulated lucy so much that she fell into it and couldn’t crawl out. it’s such a powerful message of control from those who are charismatic enough to hold it, and how sometimes we aren’t weak enough to let go.
10- how excited are you for wayward son?
lemme paint this picture: i started hyperventilating in the hallway when i found out, and then cried an hour or two later when my friend texted me that he preordered me a signed copy. like. i’ve been pre-planning how to get home from college to come and pick it up (okok the 24th is also my dad’s birthday so i’m. um. “coming home to visit him”, of course) because i’m just SO EXCITED to read them again in a canon way :’)

Singing Rock promo samplers arrived in the mail from @01firstsecond ✨ Singing Rock promo samplers arrived in the mail from @01FristSecond! Also, it has an official release date! June 18, 2019! Available for preorder now 😬. Still so wild to see it becoming a real book. In other news, I got to visit an elementary school yesterday and talk with the second grade about being an illustrator. The kids were so enthusiastic and excited about illustration and creating their own stories. It’s so easy to get caught up in some of the stressful business aspects of freelance… but talking with them, impossible not to be reminded that this is really a pretty great job- and I’m grateful to be able to do it at all. Anyways. Hoping I can hold on to some of that energy, and do better at following my own advice. (And maybe even post more? And finish things? goals goals goals). #kidlitart #TheSingingRock https://www.instagram.com/p/BrQhsdKBimd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jwyqur61ywb3
