Do you have any fic recommendations? I've just read the open road and other anesthetics, which was good, but I'd love more Noir content.

Heads up, the open road and other anesthetics is pretty light hearted and these probably will not be. so say vigilant LMAO (its noir, ya know?). Cant have a Spider Noir fic rec list without the gospel itself. Definitely on the whumpier side, lots of "this guy can never catch a break huh" but very good! Takes the noirverse and makes it so so cool. I pull a lot from this fic. Great stuff Its a post ITSV setting and features a great deal of everyone but Pete is def the focus. The spider gang is trying to get back together, but when they get to Noir's world things don't go as planned. Heavy on the found family. Heavy on the angst. Love Noir's relationship w/ Miles' parents

Goes along with Burning Matches as a side story of Pete infiltrating the KKK to get them tf out of NYC. Very heavy handed on the angst. Even whumpier than Burning Matches. Where it stands right now, it ends on an incredibly low note, very much like Eyes Without a Face. Peter's kicked while he's down & physically incapable of getting a win. But Peter does kick Nazi ass which is always nice to see If you like the noirverse HopelesslyLost writes this is very interesting! Gotta be my fave part of this fic. I love seeing Noir Cage, Daredevil, and Tony Stark. Plus the who "cursed" situation.. mwah

Just finished this one today! Was very fun. It's an MJ spider-man (her POV) and a Black Cat Peter. Gwen Stacy, a dancer at Felica Hardy's place, is found dead. Her fiancé, Peter Parker, is found dead soon after. Its very much a mystery! TBH i think i was out of it reading this because a twist got me that I'm almost positive was obvious from the beginning LMAO. Slight Peter/Johnny Storm as well

Between Midnight and Dawn by Gruoch (incomplete) 14,158 words

Prequel to the previous rec. I love this one and I'd do anything to see it update again. Shows you how Peter got to be the Black Cat, he has cool run ins with the Dare Devil and Stark, all the fun noir folks. Heads up on the dysfunctional found family tag, thats for sure Peter and Felicia. But they're strange in canon anyway so its not really much of a surprise.

This is the fic i mentioned a post or 2 ago about Johnny Storm being a drag performer. I really love the atmosphere of this fic, I thought it was pulling from an offical comic thats how well it got me. This one's Pete/Johnny Storm! They're cute. Lots of focus on the gay subculture of the 30s I think.

catching glimpses of the international fandom of the Mechanisms is so weird to me. because they were a fixture of quite a niche scene in London - you’d see them play at pubs, or events like Nine Worlds (short-lived UK con for nerd shit with a social justicey bent - in retrospect, it went about as well as you’d expect, but I was naive back then). i went to some of their gigs, and it was fun, but there was a bunch of audience interaction type stuff I wasn’t entirely clued in about - it was clear that most of the people who went were people who went to a lot of Mechanisms gigs and quite probably knew them personally. big overlap with the sort of cabaret/bi cuddle pile type scene, anyone remember ‘Lashings of Ginger Beer Time’ lol.

and what they do is such an unabashedly nerdy thing, like the typical structure is to take a theme - fairy tales, Greek mythology, etc.; then reinterpret it in a grimdark scifi context - grand space opera, cyberpunk noir, space western, Lovecraftian horror - and assign various members of the band to assume the roles of the characters in the story, find some small corner for the Mechanisms themselves to appear and be nihilistically violent, and then the songs are... well, I don’t know about all of them, but definitely a lot of them are pastiches of existing songs. in Once Upon A Time (In Space) we have for example Our Boy Jack is to the tune of Bella Ciao, No Happy Endings is Korobeiniki - and you’re kind of expected to pick up on that I think!

anyway don’t get me wrong I love concept albums that tell a story, that’s one of my favourite genres of music, so I actually really quite like the Mechanisms. but it definitely feels like they’ve broken containment lmao.

anyway at much that same time I became good friends with Maki Yamazaki (Dr Carmilla), who originally created the Mechanisms as a backing band in the first place, so I mostly get her side of that split. which adds an extra dimension. bc it’s like “oh yeah, Maki’s old band”.

meanwhile the average fan’s encounter is like... so as I understand, one of them starred in a really popular podcast or something? The Magnus Archives. and at some point fans of that caught wind of this older project and brought all the same fandom machinery with them. so years after the band broke up, they now have a bunch of people making fanart and writing fanfiction and writing big old meta posts on tumblr, mostly coming at it from that angle. they’re getting really into it, it’s fascinating to observe a slice of that via @arianwells. also makes me feel really old...

tell me everything about monster of the week it sounds interesting i want a paragraph please please please

WONDERFUL monster of the week is a powered by the apocalypse ttrpg. that means it’s based off the monster of the week genre where there’s a different monster or antagonist for every arc (think buffy, supernatural, the x files) and the driving force behind every plot is the apocalypse (which can mean a bunch of different things, but usually translates to the monsters killing a whole bunch of people). the players are various types of monster hunters who have to work together to investigate the monster or antagonist of each arc, find their weakness, and then stop them from killing a whole bunch of people. you only use 2d6, and rolling works on a success, mixed success, or fail system- 1-6 is a fail and you don’t do what you wanted to do, 7-9 is a mixed success and you do what you wanted to do but there’s consequences or you only do some of what you wanted to do, and 10+ is a success and you get to do what you wanted exactly how you wanted to, sometimes with added bonuses. there’s a whole lot more mechanical stuff i could explain but it’s a very simple system especially compared to d&d, and it’s easy to find free pdfs of the rules online which i implore you to do if it interests you because it’s super fun!! it’s a mystery focused game so there’s a lot more roleplay and investigating than combat, which is part of the reason i like it so much lol. also, similar to call of cthulhu, the game master is called the keeper!

NOW what i was talking about in that post. the different types of monster hunters are the classes of this system, called playbooks. they’re what determines the skill sets, moves, and general vibe of each player character. some are professional or experienced investigators, some are magic users with funky powers, and a couple are straight up otherworldly beings or monsters themselves! i’m sticking to the classic playbooks and the playbooks from the tome of mysteries expansion for my picks for the jrwi boys, but there are also a ton of awesome homebrew playbooks out there. you can find a huge masterlist of them by just looking up “motw playbooks”. ANYWAYS here’s the playbooks that i think the jrwi guys would pick:

charlie

the mundane: charlie seems to love a good just some guy character and that’s literally what this playbook is. they have no special powers, no expertise on monster fighting, NOTHING they are just a dude. i think he’d find that extremely entertaining and also figure out a way to make it incredibly angsty

the initiate: basically a cult member and the closest thing you can get to being a warlock in motw, which was in my head because i listened to the suckening rolled earlier today and charlie mentioned how regardless of what setting he’s in in a game he’s always looking for a way to make a pact with something LMAO. the playbook also has a lot of built in dubious morality on the side of the cult, which i think he’d have fun with

the chosen: this one feels obvious, with how often he plays characters who are chosen ones. the chosen playbook also tends to be quite tanky, at least every time i’ve seen it played/played it, which i think he’d like. plus you get to customize your own weapon and i think he’d have fun making a sword that can kill god

grizzly

the gumshoe: a classic detective type. i honestly have no proper reasoning for thinking grizzly would pick this playbook but the vibes are right for some reason. i’m picturing arthur style brooding with a noir detective vibe, a juno steel type character yknow

the divine: in terms of aesthetics, this is rumi if she was a monster of the week character. the playbook comes with a cool divine weapon that does a shit ton of damage but the move set is geared way more towards support, and i think it’d be interesting to see grizzly play a support character

the crooked: bebo plays a lot of criminals what can i say. the crooked playbook has specific backgrounds, and i think he’d have fun with the charlatan or fixer options. this is also one that you can take in a much more cartoony direction if you want which i think suits him

the wronged: the thanatos of motw playbooks babeyyyy. the wronged is all about losing someone you cared about to a specific type of monster and dedicating your life to hunting them down. again, very thanatos, but a lot of bizly characters have the theme of searching for someone they lost or attempting to make up for not being able to save those people, which is one of the most common routes i see played with the wronged

the flake: the timothy rand of motw playbooks! bebo loves his paranoid conspiracy theorists! this one i picked because i think he’d find the move set funny there is a move that rewards you for doing the opposite of what someone advises you to do, and one that’s literally called crazy eyes. very chip very rand i think he’d have fun

condi

okay condi is the hard one because he doesn’t really have a “type” the way the other three do. i honestly think that out of all of them he could take any playbook and make a really interesting and character out of it. my top picks would be the spellslinger (cool magic user) the spooky (little freak), and the searcher (little freak but without supernatural influence), but more for vibes than anything. again i think he could pull off any playbook

hello I feel like we have in some ways very similar book tastes - personally I've always been a fantasy reader and since I've grown up I've branched out to include sci fi and can say that SFF is definitely my favourite genre. I also prefer to read books where at least one prominent character is some flavour of lgbtq+ & (sorry I've been combing thru your book tag a bit) some of my favourites have been the teixcalaan duology, everina maxwell's books (prob some of my all time favorites actually), tlt... you get the gist. so I'd love to hear some recommendations for more SFF books that I might enjoy if u are up for it(I read a lot via audiobooks bc I'm a biologist and it helps me keep focused during menial lab work, and I'm always hunting for more books!!!). I also have a couple recommendations of my own to offer up: the sound of stars by alechia dow (currently reading it and have rlly enjoyed it, ya features apocalyptic alien invasion type stuff, a really great mc who is either demi or gray ace I can't remember which, lots of interesting world building & MC also loves books a lot) & also Hench by Natalia Zina Walschotts (about a henchperson working temp jobs for super villains who is disgruntled by superheroes' ignorance to how their work keeps fucking up regular citizens just for the sake of their own images. uhm it's just really good) anyways have a good day and may the next books you read be 4 stars or above :)

the locked tomb series by tamsyn muir. you're on tumblr so you're probably aware of this series lmao. but it's a fun queer necromantric romp in space. i call it "fun" because the books are legitimately funny and fun to read, but they pack a punch too.

silver under nightfall by rin chupeco. this is a very recent read for me and i liked it a lot! a vampire hunter joins a vampire triad instead of doing his job. well, he does his job too lol. it's got mystery vibes and good polyam rep.

lots of stuff by the author neon yang, if you haven't read anything by them already. the tensorate series of novellas is one of my fave series ever, and their most recent novel, the genesis of misery, is a nonbinary joan of arc retelling in space and i really liked it.

the amberlough dossier series by lara elena donnelly is great, and i'm especially recommending the audiobooks because they're a delight. the books are kind of a mix of spy thriller/noir.

the space between worlds by micaiah johnson. multiverse travel. doppelgangers. flirtations with an aloof handler. some of my favorite things lol.

brother crab’s 2023 seasonals in review: summer

surprisingly easy to rank season for me, so i'll get right to it

anime of the season + runner-up for summer goes to...

undead girl murder farce and zom 100: zombie ni naru made ni shitai 100 no koto! nothing else even came close

i'm giving ugmf anime of the season because i personally vibed with it a lot (murder mysteries with a rakugo flair + arsene lupin trying to fuck the phantom of the opera in the background you really cannot go wrong) and also because zom100 has yet to release its last few episodes

zom100 is such a consistently solid show, though, that even without seeing the full cour i'm prepared to give it runner-up of the season. and it's honestly a strong contender for anime of the year. the first episode especially... i would rank it even higher than the first ep of oshi no ko tbh

lots of sequels this season as well!

horimiya, bleach, jjk, and bsd. some new snv came out this season as well but since i binged all that at once it doesn't really feel like a sequel to me

anyway easily sequel of the season goes to bleach, largely because of nostalgia won't deny that but also because it's just that fucking good

horimiya however was also an immense delight! gonna miss these wacky kids :')

quickfire thoughts on everything else:

watashi no shiawase na kekkon is the shoujo of the year, there's been a lot of cute stuff lately but nothing comes close to watakon

vending machine isekai was fine and occasionally funny, but kinda shocked it got a sequel announced already. worldbuilding was definitely the most interesting part and i hope we see more of it in s2

dekiru n eko way kyou mo yuuutsu was absolutely perfect, very fun and cute and soothing

okashi na tensei had a promising premise which it failed to lean into, there was little to no BAKING in this BAKING anime jfc

lv1 maou to one room yuusha seemed like your run of the mill shitty ecchi but actually it's NONBINARY OLD MAN YAOI?! and was kinda good. dumb, but fun

ai no idenshi was... well it was episodic which i like, generally, but it really. was not consistent. some good pieces, some not so good. some interesting, some not so interesting. main failing is it really did not imo balance its 'main' plot with its mini-stories well at all

ayaka was fun! it doesn't really hold a candle to k project like at all but at least it was not as bad as praeter lmao

synduality noir (first cour) was alright. nothing to write home about but a decent enough mecha. as far as anime that are game ads go... i'd say it's okay. a little more interesting than takt op to me, though not as visually stunning. and not as compelling as god eater

hyakushou kizoku was a tv short adapting arakawa hiromu's autobiographical farming manga and it was such a delight lol, especially fun if you're a fan of fma or silver spoon. explains so much about ed tbh

hi no tori: eden no sora was a 4-ep ona that i quite liked overall... ending was just so-so to me i guess

dark gathering isn't quite over still but it's fine as a horror that's heavy on the gore (gorror? is that a thing) actually. probably better than fine, it's just not my genre. some of the stories are definitely more gripping than others, but yeah solid horror overall and really good cast (yandere hanakana what could be better)

helck is also still going but has been really solid, way more enjoyable than i'd imagined. it has an 80s feel to it that i love

and last but certainly not least shuumatsu no valkyrie ii part 2 gives us GYARU FUCKBOI BUDDHA once again. what could be better lmao

MOVING ON

op of the season goes to zom100's song of the dead by kana-boon! the song itself is a banger and the way the op changes from episode to episode makes it even better

HOWEVER this was not an easy choice lol bleach and even jjk both came in with strong contenders as well

I rant about miraculous ladybug: Episode 501 Evolution

I had to watch it in Portuguese with subtitles for the first time since usually I wait until English dub releases (no offense to anyone from Brazil, its just easier for me as an English speaker) but I decided maybe I should start doing that more since things are about to get BIG this season. So, EVOLUTION! Just got done watching it.

❗ SPOILERS START UNDER CUT!! ❗

So we pick right back up where we left off from Strikeback which was really fun an unexpected for me but I think now in hindsight it makes sense. I liked the back and forth scenes where Ladybug and Chat were talking on the roof juxtaposed with Gabriel talking to the kwamis in his creepy basement. It was kind of funny at times too because Chat would be saying something reassuring and Gabriel would be saying something threatening lol. Then we have that bit where we see Monarch, Ladybug, and Rabbitnoir chase each other in the back through a wormhole and it made me excited for what was to come (even though I already knew about Rabbitnoir from trailers lol). Then Bunnix appears which always tells me its gonna be a good episode. aaaa

Gabriel using so many miraculous is taking a toll on him like everyone predicted. It’s really great. It was also super funny when he was activating multiple miraculous at a time and Chat was like “This is taking forever” lmao Part of me wants him to somehow get every miraculous back in the finale or something and try to use every miraculous all at once since the episode establishes later that he’s kind of losing sight of his original goal. Then, in a moment of desperation, he tries to use EVERY MIRACULOUS AT ONCE and that's how he’s defeated. A man defeated by his own insanity.

SPEAKING OF THAT!! When he was given the idea by Nathalie to take the plans to his past self and he DIDN’T DO IT I was screaming at my screen like “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? JUST DROP IT AND THEN DEAL WITH LADYBUG” and at first I thought it was just a lazy writing thing to make Monarch defeated but I think it’s actually more than that. Nathalie later criticizes him for his obsession with defeating Ladybug and Chat Noir and I think it was actually to show us that. Monarch is so caught up in defeating Ladybug and Chat Noir he lost sight of why he originally wanted the Miraculous in the first place. Now he’s lost his only support system in Nathalie and he might just be driven over the edge to continue that obsession.

SPEAKING OF THAT!! OMGGG NOTHING IN THIS EPISODE MADE ME MORE EXCITED THAN NATHALIE GOING OFF ON GABRIEL!!! FINALLY! She finally sees how crazy Gabriel is!! Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Gabenath as much as the next guy but tbh in real practice, I don’t think Gabriel ever cared for Nathalie the way Nathalie cared for him. Maybe he did at first but I think this season especially we’re going to see Gabriel get tunnel vision, blinded to what he used to care about and only caring about destroying Ladybug and Chat Noir. Im glad Nathalie decided to end her association with that on her own terms instead of getting her heart broken later which is kind of refreshing to see especially for women in media. Maybe that’s just me but tbh it always seems like it’s like “Oh nooo im a woman who devoted herself to a man until he threw me away like trash!! now im sad” no not here. She was like “You don’t really care about me do you? Well F you I guess you don’t DESERVE my help!” idk I just think it’s kind of powerful and different. Makes me really appreciate Nathalie as a character more than just her ties to Gabriel. Also just a quick aside. Now we can all stop being mean to Lila (for this thing only) for smiling when Nathalie was coughing. I think she knew what was going on and is now just kind of happy her opportunity to truly get what she wants from Gabriel is open since the only thing standing in between her and total control over Gabriel was Nathalie. She wasn’t just gratifying in the weak moments of a dying woman lmao.

Anyway onto more stuff (sorry theres just a lot to talk about!! hey you decided to read it!) We finally get some Chat Noir action!! I know a lot of people last season were really angry at the backseat they felt Chat took last season. Now, in my opinion, he was kind of thrown to the side but I feel like it was for the good of the plot because the whole season was kind of setting that up as a main thing to happen. Like it was meant to show how Ladybug (under the pressure of being guardian) was making more mistakes and shoving people out (like Luca in Lies, her friends in Gang of Secrets, etc.) Now I think we’re going to see Chat doing more again because he and Ladybug had that heart to heart on the rooftop and now they understand each other. ANYWAY so Chat fused miraculous to become Rabbitnoir as we saw in the trailer and that was exciting. I think that’s our first Chat Noir fusion? (DOUBLE CHECKING) No it’s not. He fused the snake and the cat in Miracle Queen. But it’s still a big step because Ladybug trusted HIM with another miraculous instead of just using it herself. But real quick, that whole thing where it was like “Oh you can use your power more than once?” “did I use it, or will I use it *wink wink*” “Oh hahaha” that was dumb lol like whatever i mean like I GUESS but i just think it’s a lame time travel thing that stories do but it’s so minor so whatever. The real star of the rabbit miraculous is Alix!

Shes a permanent holder! Our first permanent holder other than Ladybug, Chat, and Alya (Does she count? She was permanent for a while but she gave it back... I’m just gonna say she counts because she was technically the first she just gave it up) So that’s really exciting!! The scene with her dad was super cute and I like how he just knows. Also lol Alix sending him pictures from her travels is super funny and cute. Like imagine you get a letter from your time traveling daughter along with a photo of a T-Rex and she's like “hey dad I decided to travel and I got this photo of a literal fucking dinosaur hope ur having a good day. Actually I already know youre having a good day today #time travel” One thing I’m a little confused on purely due to me watching in a different language for the first time (or my brain just didn’t get it) Is small Alix with big Alix in the time portal now? Like forever? Ladybug mentioned a cost at the end of it all (in the sub I watched) That seems a little sad to me like she wont get to live her childhood or normal life at all? Or maybe she will but she is also in the time portal?? IDK time travel is confusing lol I guess I’ll have to wait and see. I imagine big Alix will be training her or something but maybe she can see her friends on weekends. Who else will do rollerblade races with Kim?

More time nonsense, We went back to the Master Fu and Marianne separation which was surprising. And he let them borrow a miraculous! So maybe that’s how he knew he could trust Ladybug and Chat Noir, because they were the guys who came back all those years ago. But that begs the question of how HE recognized them but literally no one else does. Maybe it’s Guardian intuition but I’m still just like “seriously” lol I was a little surprised at first about the choice of the Dog miraculous but Alix was cute in her little dog hat. It’s also just nice to see Master Fu.

So that wraps up my thoughts on this episode. A VERY good start to season 5 I must say. I’m really excited for this season and I can’t wait to see what happens....... Well. I CAN WAIT. PLEASE DON’T COMMENT SPOILERS FOR THE DOCUMENT THAT MUST NOT BE NAMED PLEASE. I will be really upset and I wont hesitate to delete your comment, make an angry post about it, and let people know your username so they can block you.

So what’s next? Thomas said they would (hopefully) be releasing episodes in order so next up on season 5 is Multiplication! This episode is obviously about the Mouse. Im excited to see what kind of plan Gabriel is going to come up with to use the mouse. Maybe we’ll get our beloved Mulitmouse back! I wonder if permanent holders will become a thing going forward or not because Alix is a special case but who knows what will happen. I guess it’s a me problem and I really only saw this on TikTok (I don’t use that app anymore, too mane people don’t know how to tag spoilers and overall - and i can’t believe im saying this given this site’s rep- tumblr miraculous fandom are more respectful) But anyway, I’ll have to watch it in Portuguese again but to be honest I didn’t really mind it this time anyway. I could still follow the plot and subtitles only cut out a couple times. It’s like watching anime with sub which I usually do it’s just im watching it after watching dub for so long it’s a little weird. I’m also going to watch every episode’s English premiere too lol. Redesigning Miraculous characters Part 1!!! Marinette!

Function with POCKETS, combat boots, ZIPPERS, and loose enough to actually be able to easily move- do you know how hard it is to fight in skin-tight clothes???? Who decided superheroes look like that.

Speaking of Superheros Marinette definitely made her own superhero costume designs. She's just a nerd like that.

Did you see how hard she hyper-focused on Adrien's modelling? Girl would hyper-focus on so many things (including the outfits in hamilton due to their historical accuracies, Sailor Moon- she looks up to her, she hyperfocused on BNHA for a while but hated the designs so she redesigned them. Another main reason this is a very thought-out decision on her part- even if she didn't know it was going to be important.

Okay, so I simply decided Marinette's casual outfit changes over time- as everyone does.

She starts off in her canon outfit slowly turns into this.

The first thing that changes is her amount of accessories- she didn't mean to wear so many. But after Hero's day she decided to make Ladybug and Chat Noir merch (Hawkmoth would have a hard time targeting anyone if everyone wears a bunch of different accessories- which ones a miraculous? he'll never know).

How did this lead to her wearing a lot of Chat Noir merch? Well everyone was wearing Ladybug stuff and loved it and yet nobody was wearing Chat Noir merch. She may make fun of Chat Noir (as LB) constantly but she won't take this! She lets them know what she thinks and then Adrien the self-hating bby (at that point in time) was like "I dunno man he doesn't do much." and she got so offended she was like "Adrien the only reason I haven't thrown you is that you are my friend" (she throws CN a lot lmao) and proceeded to wear this the rest of the year.

Her Lucky Charm reverses all damage during an Akuma, including wounds. Only not all wounds occur during an Akuma. Lots of times they'd get road rash or cuts and bruises while training- especially during the beginning. And obviously, the people who care about her like Alya and her parents were concerned over the newly appearing bandages (they'd make sure the other was alright and at least was properly taken care of after training- also grabbed a bite to eat lol) anyways the point is bandages. She had a lot of them, the first time she got multiple on her face she was obviously asked if she was okay. She panicked and said it was her new style. She later did like the style and liked covering herself in stickers and bandages similar to Harajuku fashion- which she had a phase on- so why not keep it? So she did

It's an AU where Ladybug and Chat Noir are actually enemies but then Chat Noir accidentally befriends Marinette and then drama etc etc etc.

stolen moments - T: first royai fic!!! just a series of "stolen moments" (mic drop) where roy and riza like cant be together but yknow, they try. lots of pining. etc

a secret weapon of sorts - T: 5+1 edwin fic inspired by the Simple People OVA where instead of ed giving winry earrings to get out of trouble, he gives her kisses.

Absolute fucking kudos to every single smut writer out there bc it truly is an art form capturing that intimacy and emotion and etc, but I literally get flustered from writing mildly detailed kiss scenes. If I ever wrote smut, I would burst into flames on the spot.

Actually lies, I technically wrote smut once, but it was at the request of my roommates and they wanted me to write a crack smut fic of Y/N x our uni's mascot and I wrote that thing in like 3 hours with so many silly memes to keep myself sane (not like other girls, tongues battled for dominance, etc), did not edit it, and because it was so, like, not serious, I was actually able to get through it. But even then, when I wrote "thrusting" I literally had to put my laptop down for 20 minutes.

What’s your all-time favourite ship? Bro it changes day to day. You can't ask me this lmao. The current ship I'm most fixated on is Iwaoi, but I wouldn't say they're my all-time favorite.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I'm not answering this energy. On god, I'm going to finish things. I want to.

What are your writing strengths? uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh very good question lmao. I don't really like thinking about "strengths" in my writing bc who am I to say? akjdslakfjdf idk, instead, I'm just gonna say some things I like/try to do in my writing, which are: conversational prose/having a lot of voice in the narration, I try to add humor wherever I can, and recently I've gotten better and metaphors and describing things bc I picked up writing poetry a year ago!

What are your writing weaknesses? hmmm, a thing I dislike about my writing/the writing process is that I'm slow to publish things and slow to finish things because I'm such a messy first drafter and I also take forever to edit. I would like to uhhhhh get things out faster. Also I tend to repeat myself a lot bc I forget the details of things I write sometimes lmao.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Hmmm, I dunno, I guess I don't have any strong thoughts? The only other language I know is Mandarin but even then, I suck ass at that, so I'll prolly never write dialogue in another language simply bc I like to try to portray things semi-realistically and I don't think I have a good enough grasp on any other language the same way I do in English to produce authentic enough dialogue.

What was the first fandom you wrote for? Fablehaven I guess? But Idk I was in fourth grade an didn't even know what fandom was yet. Rise of the Guardians, maybe?

AHHHH idk??? maybe hold your hand out in the dark because i really experimented with my writing on that one and im sort of proud of the result, just like the fact that i wanted to try something new and it turned out alright. that or Sunset Wheeling which is an iwaoi fic where they just skate, and like it's prolly one of the most self-indulgent things i've ever written because it's silly and they just. skate. but aljdfalsjd idk i loved it and i churned it out in 6 days and it was a lot of fun lol

LADRIEN FTW LADIES AND GENTLEMEN

So Adrien is a famous model, yeah? He's like super super super famous. Anyone who doesn't live under a rock knows who he is.

Adrien is doing a world tour. But it's dangerous. A young star like him attracts many jealous eye. And Gorilla isn't enough. Adrien needs someone who can inconspicuously stick close to him and protect him. So Gabriel says.

Adrien knows he can look after himself. He's perfectly capable of keeping himself safe. After all, he himself is a trained bodyguard with the worlds most elite security firm -- Miraculous (fight me, I haven't slept in 28.5 hours, creativity might be a lil low)

The agency is know mainly for its expertly trained and carefully masked bodyguards for hire. Not even one bodyguard knows who the other is behind a facade.

Each bodyguard has their own supervising officer, an ex-bodyguard trained with certain special abilities. The SO then passes on their specific skill set to the new bodyguard. Yep, the kwami. I told you, I'm running a bit low on creativity.

The bodyguards are trained like spies. To change merely their demeanor to become someone else. Think Clark Kent vs Superman. That scene in one of the Reeves movies I can't quite recall it, where Clark just takes his glasses off and stands a little taller and suddenly, he's Superman. It's a very subtle change, but you would never walk past either of then mistake him for the other.

So there aren't any literal masks involved. Besides, Paris is blind anyway so--

So OBVIOUSLY Gabriel has to hire a bodyguard from the world's most elite security firm and he HAS to hire their best bodyguard. Seeing as Chat Noir is unavailable due to personal reasons, the agency sends in Ladybug.

Ladybug. Who is Marinette. Who has a major crush on Adrien.

Adrien cannot believe his luck. They sent Ladybug. Who is generally his partner. Whom he is madly in love with.

Both of them have the same thoughts bouncing around their heads: This is going to be a difficult two weeks.

I WANT ALL OF THE SPICE, Y'ALL

I want them in big cities, Adrien trying so goddamn hard to channel the suave and smooth Chat Noir but it's just not working sjdjjd. Ladybug doing her level best to maintain her facade and not turn into a melted puddle of blush everytime Adrien looks at her

I want them doing stupid tourist things in other countries and for the first time, Ladybug's actually having fun on a mission and it's not due to her charming partner cracking jokes all night to lift her spirits.

I want them to like ,,, be in Venice, riding a gondola or smth ,,, that scene in the little mermaid ,,,, "kiss the girl" lmao

I want Ladybug to talk to Adrien about Chat Noir. Tell Adrien how she'd blindly trust Chat with her life. Tell Adrien about events he already knows, but from her perspective.

I want Marinette to somehow come up in conversation. I want Adrien to talk to Ladybug about Marinette. How she's so talented and brilliant and sweet. How she's been one of his few genuine friends that he made back in high school.

I want them to spend days thinking about kissing each other.

Ladybug doesn't know he's Chat, right? And if she never finds out, it'll never jeopardize their team dynamic.

And Adrien doesn't know she's Marinette, right? And since he'll never find out, it won't dangle their friendship over a shredding machine.

And then I want them both to think about the kind of dangers they regularly put themselves in for the sake of the agency. They can't let themselves get involved with someone else. What if something happens to them on the job? What if they never come back and the other is left in the dark, never knowing what really happened in the eleventh hour?

And then, in the middle of the second week, I went them to say "fuck it" and go for it.

AND THEN I WANT AN ATTEMPT TO BE MADE ON ADRIEN'S LIFE

AND I WANT LADYBUG TO TAKE THE HEAT BECAUSE SHE'S THE BODYGUARD HERE

AND I WANT ADRIEN TO LOSE HIS FUCKING MIND BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS THAT THE WOMAN HE'S IN LOVE WITH, BUT THAT IS HIS PARTNER, THE PERSON HE SWORE TO ALWAYS BACK UP NO MATTER WHAT

And I want Ladybug to get taken captive, because without his little bodyguard, surely Adrien can't be that hard to get to.

And I want to see Adrien looking at Ladybug, thinking about their vow of secrecy, looking at Ladybug, thinking about all the rules he was about to break, looking at Ladybug, and deciding "fuck it" and going feral on the attackers.

Like ,,,, no mercy, violent street cat on a murderous rampage.

And I want injured and dazed Ladybug to be witnessing all this and all her fuzzy mind can come up with is that the agency sent backup. They sent her kitty cat.

Ladybug comes to in Adrien's hotel room. Adrien has a shit-eating grin on his face and he's leafing through something, like a stack of cards, it seems.

"What are those?"

"Chanelle VanCamp, Moira Rosenburg, Erin Liu, Katherine Harrington, Sophie Busson, Laila Matveyev, Marguerite Ilya, Angeline Lee, Casey Montgomery-- oh! What's this? Marinette Dupain-Cheng!"

"YOU WENT THROUGH MY STUFF?!"

"You should pick a better hiding spot than your breast pocket, bugaboo. Or maybe not, since all these ruined IDs might have just saved your life."

"Bugaboo. . .? CHAT????"

"The one and only."

"When we get back to Paris, I'm going to mash your face into the training mat until your features are unrecognisable."

Most popular multi-chapter fic: in terms of true multichapter fics (i.e. not a oneshot collection), No Ordinary Exchange wins for hits, kudos, everything. i think that can be attributed to the fact that a) it’s long, b) it’s complete, c) it’s rayllum (most popular tdp ship), and d) it’s a college!au (a popular trope in fandom overall). although tbh, i only have like one or two other true multichaps posted, one of which is incomplete and the other of which is half-focused on an extreme rarepair, so there’s not much competition 😂

Favorite story you’ve written so far: i am going to cheat and say my favorite fics i’ve written so far are the three in my why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? series. here’s the series “summary”:

A series of (mostly) Flash Thompson-centric fics set in a canon-divergent AU beginning after Spider-Man: Homecoming. Niche headcanons*, one-sided rivals to friends (to lovers), and Flash Thompson appreciation abound!

*Headcanons I have pioneered so far: Flash Thompson has dyslexia, Flash Thompson likes art history, Flash Thompson likes origami. Stay tuned for more. ;)

basically, it’s 50k worth of fics (so far) that serve as a testament to how much i love mcu flash thompson 🥺💛 he deserves the world!!

Fic you were nervous to post: i was pretty nervous to post one of my more recent fics, actually! the fic is called Is This Love?, and i was nervous for a few different reasons:

- it’s half sambucky, which was fine bc sambucky is popular lmao, but it’s also half sarahmay, which is a sapphic rarepair i came up with between sarah wilson and may parker. the mcu fandom has a heavy preference for mlm pairings, so i was nervous by virtue of the fic being partially wlw-centric, but it all ended up being fine! i have converted so many people to sarahmay 😤

- the fic also features my demiromantic!sam headcanon. i myself am aspec but (maybe) not demiromantic, so i wanted my portrayal to be respectful, and as such i was nervous despite everything i’d looked into prior to writing and posting the fic, lol

- it’s a multichap. multichaps make me nervous solely because they are multiple chapters. adds stressTM 😂

How do you choose your titles: song lyrics, randomly coming up with them, a specific line/word used in the fic, and brainstorming with friends are probably the main ways!

Do you outline: sure do 😤 it varies from fic to fic, so some outlines are a detailed list of events in the appropriate order, while others are a more general idea of “here’s stuff i want to include,” lol. generally speaking, though, i always try to go in with some sort of plan!

Complete: all of my recent fics are complete! (although that’s bc i primarily write oneshots 😂) on ao3, i think i only have one fic that’s truly incomplete. (oneshot collections are a weird in-between, because they essentially are always complete unless i feel like adding to them.) on ffn, though, i have four incomplete fics, three of which are from middle school. i don’t think they will ever be finished 😩

Do you accept prompts: technically, yes! but my policy is that i am under no obligation to write any of them. i write fanfic for fun and as a stress reliever, so if im not inspired by a prompt, i am not going to stress myself out trying to write for it, lol

Upcoming story you’re most excited to write about: i actually just finished writing this story today (by hand, it’s not typed yet lmao), but im gonna let it count for this question anyways! it is probably the most self-indulgent fic i’ve ever written: a monk and medium crossover. that’s right, two fandoms absolutely no one in the world cares about but me. i wrote this fic solely bc it was something i wanted to read 😂 it is - if i counted correctly - 78 1/2 pages long, which is probably in the range of 30-35k words? once i type it up (in like,, december lmao) i’ll have more specifics, although the “patching” that occurs when i type handwritten drafts could push the word count closer to 40k. but who knows? time will tell!

anyways, im just so excited about this fic bc it has so many things i like lmaooo (examples: allison whump, joe x allison content, sharona being her wonderful self, and what i hope is an interesting murder mystery!)

I know he talked about revenge on jason and I do think that if he got back he would be focused on stopping jason but I also think over a little time he'd forgive him and they'd kinda be buddies again and he'd help him with the drug problem also hank should get to kick crane in the face cuz yeah. in no particular order whatsoever, I present you some good queer media: ((very minor spoilers for some things))

- black sails! it's a series, 4 seasons, 30 something episodes total, I haven't watched it yet but someone just recommend it to me and it sounds amazing. they're pirates, it's got a lot of queer characters, characters of color, and it deals (really fucking well, from what I heard) with topics of racism, misogyny, cissexism, poverty and how all of these relate and how systems oppress marginalized people and a bunch of other stuff. there's also at least two different poly relationships (a triad and a V). also it's got legit really fucking good writing, like legit legit good.

- the penumbra podcast!! I have listened to this one and it's a fucking masterpiece. it's got two main storylines; the first one (Junoverse) is a noir detective type but it's in Mars in the future (with a non-binary he/him bisexual lady as a main character and it deals (really well) with a lot of mental health issues, mainly depression) and it turns into space pirates in the third season and I think there's only one canon cis/straight person in the whole thing everyone else is queer and the other main storyline (Second Citadel) is more classic fantasy knights and monsters with a lot of questions of morality and "what's really a monster" and a poly relationship (and scaley monsterfuckers) and honestly a lot of queer characters

- Welcome To Night Vale!! I feel like this would be right up your street, honestly. it's a podcast, it follows a radio show from this town, Night Vale, where a lot of really weird supernatural shit happens, and the radio host, Cecil telling us (the town) about what's up. it's really fun and weird, it's not scary at all if that's a concern, it's very explicitly queer (in the very first episode Cecil falls in love with a man and tells the whole town about it) and it depicts a very healthy gay couple and great character development and it's honestly really fun, you get to know a lot of the townfolk and their stories and it's great

- The Adventure Zone! it's an actual play podcast, the McElroy brothers (you may know them?) and their dad play d&d. they just finished their third campaign and are starting the 4th one this week I think. the first campaign is by far my favourite. it starts kinda rough, they're playing dnd for the first time and the story and characters are pretty weak, but by the third or fourth arc you can tell how much they've learnt in the process. the fourth arc is where the story starts picking up and by the end (there's 69 (ha) episodes divided into 8 or 9 arcs) you'll be sobbing your eyes out for the last ten episodes. it's classic dnd fantasy stuff with at least three explicitly queer relationships (one of the main characters is gay and in a relationship) and w at least one explicitly trans character. it was their first time, they tried and did fairly well tbh. the second campaign is shorter, settled in modern real life Kepler, West Virginia where basically cryptids are real and the main three kill monsters in a monster of the week type of thing. (one of the main three is bi and in a queer relationship, there's one nb they/them character). and the third campaign just finished, it's real fun too, three college students of a heroes and villains school, in a (fantasy) world where heroes and villains are like A Thing and The System sucks and the message is basically to overthrow capitalism lmao

I swear I consume more media than just podcast but rn I just can't think of any...

also not exactly queer media but:

- Phineas and Ferb, it's a classic, you probably watched it on TV as a kid (I did) but it merits a rewatch

- Gravity Falls, same thing, I'm still not over how fucking good this show is

- Steve Universe, I know things got heated up in the fandom at some point but I ignored the fuck out of everyone and enjoyed it anyways because it's good

- how to train your dragon, they're all good okay, they are, watch them again

- Big Mouth. you're like 15 right? you can watch big mouth, I highly recommend it, it's really good. it's for some queer characters but they're even the main focus of some episodes/storylines, but it doesn't even matter, the whole series is just really good.

- Megamind, it's probably better than you remember

- also, you're into star trek right? have you watched discovery? I haven't watched s3 yet but it's good

I went completely off the rails halfway through this but still, hope you check out some new thing!! (and if you do post about it, I wanna know) (also can you guess who I am? I feel like it's kinda obvious sjsksk)

Thank you!!! I really like WTNV, and I've been meaning to watch/listen to those other ones! And I never actually watched Phineas and Ferb, but I've heard it's good. Gravity Falls and Steven Universe are both on my list! And I hella hyperfixated on HTTYD in sixth grade. Megamind is amazing!!!!! And I sadly can't watch Disco cuz I don't have Paramount+, but I wish I could!

And surprisingly I can't guess who you are but that's probably due to me being a dumbass who can't really tell typing styles apart
