So you know the fanfics where Jazz becomes a psychologist interning at Arkham Asylum? It’s always either Danny scaring everyone or she just kinda befriends some villains but what about if all the villains were annoyed at her, after all she can tend to be a little smug

What if she was just unafraid of everyone there and people were confused, you can use this also as a reason for them to be annoyed at her or even hate her (Joker, Scarecrow, Riddler. Villains that hate not being feared) and the guards were just there thinking she was just another young idiot that was going to get herself killed.

Until..A breakout happens

One of the villains (your choice) happen to find her but she’s still unafraid of them and this angers them so they attack Jazz and BOOM

Jazz has a shield formed around her protecting her from the attack, while the villain is confused she just calmly pulls out one of her lipsticks and stuns them and they just fall unconscious severely confused and angry at her

This continues to happen until one of the bats just she her calmly drinking tea while a patient is pounding on her force field when she spots them and just punches the patient before turning to the bat

On the topic of How Do You Handle XYZ Comment, I've always wondered how you handle terrible responses on your toh takes. Like I know the toh fandom doesn't lack piss on the poor reading comprehension and they also really enjoy wildly out of touch takes, but I've never seen any comments on your princess luz stuff of that nature. I'm sure they must be there but maybe I'm too early? But anyway, how do you tend to deal with the "acktually shipping luz and Hunter is incest" and the "ur not a real lesbian because putting amity in a poly ship is lesbian erasure" and the "as a white person kinda sus you make the poc woman an empress" kind of responses? Ones that are technically not hate and maybe if you squint could be from people who aren't inherently trying to do bad but just lack the maturity needed to engage with the internet at large?

this ask made me giggle. honestly, i haven't received as much pushback as you might expect! way less pushback than i expected. in the princess AU, i've gotten a LOT more "this is actually too grotesque for me to stomach" comments than "this is problematic" comments, which is fine. horror-thriller isn't for everyone, those comments do not upset me.

i have had a Few run-ins with bad faith people, whom i mostly block. there's one prolific commenter in toh tumblr fandom who would repeatedly write angry essays on my humor meta posts -- essays that were all about how belos is too evil to be sympathetic and/or about how hunter is a soft gentle boy who shouldn't be jokingly referred to as evil. then they'd go "i can't help my active and conscious decision to type a bunch of rude fucking words and then my active and conscious decision to send those rude fucking words because i'm autistic :(((" around the fourth or fifth time this happened, i was fucking done with that nonsense and finally blocked them. shoulda done it after the first comment tbh!! no more autism exceptions.

as for the rest of it, my main management strategy is to simply.... preempt the bad faith comments?

i had a LOT more unpleasant and conflict-filled fandom experiences when i was in the raven cycle fandom. that was my first exposure to "you can't ship multi-gender polycules if anyone involved is gay" and "queerplatonic het relationships are just heteronormativity shipping that you're trying to get away with." having dealt with those takes before, i've found a few different ways to disarm bad faith readers before they get started.

first is to be super open and honest about my interests. i talk about what i find compelling in different relationships All The Damn Time. it's really hard for anyone to accuse me of only wanting hunter to fuck amity if they've seen, like.... anything i've said about hunter and amity.

same with hunter and luz. the only negative reactions i've really gotten to how they're written in the princess AU is like.... two people being squicked by camila thinking they're romantically involved. i REALLY expected more pushback on the touchyfeely bed sharing stuff, but from what i remember, there's never been Any....? not even from people who consider them siblings.

i expected a lot of pushback on how mean hunter and amity are to each other, since it's taken So much farther than the canon. but it turns out that there's a very large overlap between people who like dark horror AUs and people who like hunter and amity murdering each other. (in a fluffy fic i don't think this characterization would fly Nearly as easily.)

i find that being funny really disarms people, too. when you look at any of my toh meta posts that could be controversial, they're basically all funny. people are a lot more willing to listen to what you have to say if you make them laugh, and it's harder for them to get angry at you.

and then the last thing is that i think i'm in sort of a privileged position in toh fandom. i've written a lot of controversial subjects and relationships and characterizations.... but i've also written some WILDLY popular mainstream fic. and people who like the mainstream fic don't really want to beef with me about differing niche opinions, bc there's a level of respect there. which they might not have for a writer they don't like.

but anyway. when things Do happen, i almost always just block and move on. there are so many people here who get what i'm talking about that there's no need for me to try to convert people who don't, you know??

#also the 'making a character of color an empress is problematic' thing made me laugh aloud #as for THAT... i don't think i've ever been accused of racism in how i write luz (or camila or raine or darius or hennessy for that matter)#i'm obviously imperfect and have blind spots as a white writer. but i also like to think i do my due diligence #at the Very Least i have Black and latine friends willing to sensitivity read for me & i've gone to native spanish speakers for camila's #dialogue. etc. if anyone has a take that's THAT bad faith about how i write women of color i'm just gonna uh.....#assume that what they really mean is that they want me to write white boys exclusively.#and well. i will not be doing that!#replies #toh #princess luz au #long post #if there are typos in this i apologize. i was out again all day and i am Le Tired

Hi anon! God, I haven't been in the ATLA fandom for a long while now, goes to show how dead the zuki fandom is if you're coming to me for it 😭😭😭Rarepair so rare you have to go to an entirely different fandom's blog for your ship. Sad. BUT I APPRECIATE YOU COMING TO ME SO MUCH!!! I am a pokeani blog in spirit but a whateverthefuck/multipurpose blog in practice. I will say though, spicy headcanons are kinda far out of my wheelhouse, and also that fandom's age-up discourse (and everything else discourse) terrifies me so I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole tbh, BUT I can always give other stuff! Ramble under cut.

So, I think I'll just ramble instead of spicy headcanons- one INCREDIBLY FUNNY aspect of Zuki to me is that, in the comics, Suki's kind of giving 'I can fix him', ngl. BUT SHE ACTUALLY CAN, THAT'S THE THING. It's so interesting to me because canon Zuki in the comics is very much founded on that bodyguard/royalty dynamic trust- they have to trust each other with their life if they're going to do the whole bodyguard thing well. And from that trust comes Suki's trust in Zuko as a PERSON. Even when LTIERALLY THE ENTIRE GAANG is like 'ehhh idk he kinda sucks again', Suki's the one who's like 'can you guys chill for .5 seconds and trust him? look at him. he's sad. he needs therapy, not to be killed'.

I think Zuki just WORKS because of that trust. And FROM THAT TRUST, she actually is one of the key reasons they're able to help bring him back from the path he goes down in the comics (which i have not read in forever so pardon innacuracies). So, SHE ACTUALLY CAN FIX HIM. /half joking because obviously it was a ton of his own internal work and growth, but like, from a shitposter's perspective, #icanfixhim.

And that trust goes the other way around the entire way. Not only in Zuko trusting the kyoshi warriors to keep him alive, but Zuko also actually TALKS to Suki and opens up to her in the comics. ZUKO. OPENS UP. TO SOMEONE. AND TALKS TO THEM. AND COMMUNICATES. TO THEM. obviously he trusts her as a bodyguard and a friend IMMENSELY, which provides that super good foundation for something more. He feels safe around her, physically and emotionally, which I think is an incredibly rare honor. (lol, honor. zuko. ykwim. )

I just like bodyguard royalty ships tbh, I'm also a zelink hoe (my main three ships have always been zuki/zelink/contestshipping. not sure what that says about me tbh, other than 'likes m/f but undeniably bisexual ships'), but like, despite being a rarepair, the comics gave us a GOOD DAMN BASIS FOR IT!!!! IT'S ABOUT THE TRUST! THE VULNERABILITY!!!! ramble over, ty for listening to my ted talk.

disclaimer: i was bored af lately so i decided to write down all of my thought about this stupid assholes

tw: use of slurs (it's fucking liquido and north come on you know they would) and nsfw content but this is under a cut

• this one is for the veterans that followed me on wattpad, the 🎀💋🤩💌👯‍♀️bread 💌❤️‍🔥❤️❤️, to be more specific brioche bread is liquido's equivalent of giving someone chocolate box,

• their relationship doesn't get in the way when it comes to their rivalry,

• their love language is using the most fucked-up insults you've ever heard of. liquido calls north 'dirty dumb blonde fag' and north tells liquido that he is the biggest stupid cunt he ever dated. they love each other 🥰🥰,

• to everybody's surprise this relationship is good for them. since they are dating, both north and liquido spend more time on training,

• liquido is much of an attention seeker so it's very hard to see them being apart,

• when they are in the same room with other people and liquido starts to acting up, north is like: "oh my god, sit the fuck down🙄🙄". at first liquido didn't listen to what north was telling him but over time when north told liquido, for example, to shut up: liquido shut up. "hold it": liquido holds it. "tell him": liquido tells him,

• when it comes to north, liquido always mocks him. when something happens liquido says things like that to north: "say you are sorry", "thank me now", "😜😜say: please liquido😵‍💫 i can't live 🥺🤭 without you". unfortunately, north knows that he needs to say all of these things because otherwise liquido will be offended at him a whole day,

• type of couple that was shipped by fans long before they started dating,

• when it comes to being romantic, they are romantic on the level of a third grade student. north gives liquido some 'awesome, diabolical, fun as hell rocks' he found on the beach and liquido sends him pictures of drawings that he made on some documents or nda's (del aqua was pissed off) (those drawing looked like if they were made by preschooler),

• the most romantic thing they've done was placing receipt with written love confession into an empty alcohol bottle and throw this to the ocean. soon after that beach guard reported them to police and they have to pay a fine💀💀,

• north sends liquido every "blue haired girl" meme,

• another easter egg for my wattpad followers: north teaches liquido how to ice skate (it ended up horrible),

• liquido is the master of making the scene in public. he is sitting on north's lap in the most random moments and places, he gives north a slap on the ass when there are cameras everywhere, etc.,

• north on the other hand, hits liquido in the shoulder, elbows him in the stomach or pokes him between the ribs with his fingers.

• north is crocs and liquido is flip-flops,

• they don't care about privacy in the bathroom. when one of them is washing their teeth - the other is peeing, etc.,

skyella- such a big one for no real reason tbh!!! i just had the epiphany that i love them when the season officially released. theyre not the most interesting or (more importantly to me) the funniest but theyre just! sweet and nice! finally td girls who were into the same guy but are still friends w absolutely no hard feelings in the end <3

scamy- GOD. god ok. based on that one hug this is MY ship that cant be justified beyond that. even their evil vibes arent that compatible.. but they COULD be! amy is still amy so i have some careful treading to do w this ship but that aside they are sooo funny together. ive also loved them since the beginning. can i say theyre like my mk/ulia. to me.

Wow, so I just finished reading Muted. I loved it. I was doubtful at first because, I don't know, I'm just overly-critical for no reason, but as the story went on I really fell in love with the characters and the storytelling. Muted is great.

So, you don't have to respond to this (I know many creators don't view "shipping culture" among their fans too favorably), but I am so curious to know- what is the state of Avaline and Raum's relationship?? I mean, maybe it's obvious, but I can't really tell, I'm not sure why.

Is Raum more of a close, supportive friend to Avaline? Or is their relationship more of a romantic one? Have you thought of their future at all? I am so curious.

Also, (sorry to ask so many questions, feel free to disregard any of these if you do choose to answer) how come Raum was willing to get so deeply involved with Avaline and her family drama? Is he just a kind spirit?

Oh, now I have lots of questions about how the demons work in your world, but I'll cut myself short for now. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and thank you so much for putting in so much effort to create such an impactful and visually appealing story, I've actually been inspired quite a bit while reading Muted.

For your questions: I consider them to be in a relationship. TBH I didn't want to show them to be traditionally kissy/lovey in a romantic way because 1. Avaline isn't really ready for that and 2. I'm aroace and so is my wife, we don't kiss and we don't even sleep in the same room but I love her totally and completely. I feel like ... you know. Fandoms, from what i observed, only seem to feel validated in their ship when there is a Kiss involved like the happy ever after of a disney movie. That's what signifies to people 'this is a couple', but tbh I think kissing is gross LMAO so while I am fine doing it with the trio I wanted avaline/raum to be outwardly more like how chase and I are.

And this isn't a knock at your question - just an observation that I found funny when i see people react to Raum and the way he helped out.... I dont' think I had any comments about how Dendro dove head first into helping Camille's family drama - or they didn't think that it was weird that she was so interested in helping. or at least not as any. To the point where multiple ppl thought that he was somehow Avaline's reborn twin because they didn't understand how he'd care any other way (he's not. he's older than avaline lol)

Demons are summoned basically based on what the summoner's deepest needs are. Avaline needed the truth of it all but she also needed someone to support her and be in her corner unequivocally. Raum wanted to be that, because he's a nice dude, but also with his abilities he could see how badly she needed that. also, dendro/raum know the likelihood of them actually getting hurt/killed by humans is next to none. (See - dendro getting her arm ripped off and then just sticking it back on) So there is a security in them knowing that they'll come out of this alive no matter how crazy it gets lmfao hope this.... helps? LMAO or at least gives you some more to chew on hahaa

I dare you or the next anon to defend Rosemary. It's not bad, but it's way overrated. I've got few points to bring up here to respond to.

-Kanaya lost her personality for its sake: she was relevant and had a few notable connections to characters mainly those who died and Karkat, but after the reunion on the meteor, she suddenly stopped caring about anything; nothing about her son/little brother Karkat, nor the loss of all her friends and her driving motivation to murder Gamzee sponteanously vanished. Just being Rose's "good" girlfriend. (tbh, it could actually be beneficial for the story if Kanaya didn't deus ex machina'd herself into life)

-No boundries: no conflict of interests is passable, but Kanaya basically allows Rose to become alcoholic and do whatever she wants instead of taking a stand for Rose to better herself. This basically made neither of characters have any character development from that point onward or at least none with each other.

-It cancelled possible character development for Kanaya: Kanaya already idolized and were in love with another girl - Vriska, who backstabbed her badly founded feelings in front of her eyes, so what does she do the second that's resolved, falls for another girl without caution, idolizing her bad behaviour (alcohol + the whole grimdark Rose stuff). It really wasn't the best thing.

-They fill the same archetype: for both teams, they're the cold calculating girls who care for friends and engage in sarcasm and acts of gruesome brutality. Such resemblance is almost always bad for a ship dynamic, but for good ships it's balanced by ideological differences like what's justice, is murder fine under correct circumstances, etc. but here they agree on everything, no conflict or anything, they're basically a unit

-Kanaya's role in the story is greatly diminished: as one of the "main" trolls, Kanaya had a couple of things: wizarding with Eridan, being one to talk with Karkat calmly, guiding Rose through Medium, crush on Vriska, friendly relationship with Tavros, having Doc Scratch as First Guardian, getting the Matiorb and at the end also being pissed at Gamzee's murdering. Some of these obviously couldn't have follow up, but besides Rose, only the matriorb stuff had follow up and it was given half-way to Roxy. I'd not exaggerate saying her role in the story after meeting Rose was as notable as that of alpha sprites if not lesser

And that's it if you disagree, please tell me why and if not pass it onto anons. It's not a terrible ship, but if it wins the list above is why I'll be pissed

I actually do have some annoyance with Rosemary. For the ship past Act 6 and the harm it did for Kanaya as a character. Kanaya in Act 6 is just basically enabling Rose's behavior because she wanted that from Vriska. A bad girl who does her own thing and she lets her do that. I sort of miss the girls being playfully sarcastic with each other. That's what had made them interesting in the beginning. And the fact that Kanaya read Rose's guide on Sbub/Sgrub and that's how the trolls were able to make it through before the whole Bec Noir bullshit. She probably should not have been revived because of rainbow drinker. But if Kanaya had to live, then she should have gone through the clown hunting and attempted to kill Gamzee. Fuck Karkat's orders, she has been hurt and killed for trusting someone, she ain't taking chances with another highblood bastard. That would have been a better conflict than letting her human girlfriend get drunk off her ass. I would also say that despite Rose's calculating side, she was also shown to be somewhat mischievous or playful. As she likes to tease John, reference jokes from Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff, showing that she is not your typical cool goth girl. She is actually silly deep down, just acts smart in front of others. It would have been funny to see Kanaya's reactions seeing that side of Rose and accepting that side of her. A much more healthy connection than expecting Rose to do harm on herself or others.

Kanaya should not have been that accepting of Vriska stopping Rose's alcoholism when Post Retcon hit. It was shown that she was still pissed at Vriska for kissing Tavros. It made her worse just forgiving her offscreen. Do we know if Kanaya goes to try to get Vriska again since she is alive in that timeline? Or does she still accept Rose but watches Vriska on the side whenever she wants that bad girl once again? I don't know why Roxy would have to make the Matriorb besides being threatened by The Condesce. In her Roxy's position, trolls, or the Condesce herself, were the cause of her timeline to get fucked. She had to be in hiding and protect herself from the drones. Why would she need to make the Matriob for Kanaya? Because her sister/mom has a crush on her? I doubt that would be enough to sway that there would be decent trolls. If Roxy heard that Kanaya let Rose be drunk because of the guilt of not realizing Mom Lalonde really loved Rose, Roxy would not let Kanaya near Rose. It's funny hearing too that WhatPumpkin writers like Aysha actually hate Rosemary. So guess what they did? They decided to fuck Kanaya over in Epilogues and Homestuck^2 by making Rose cheat on her with Jade, having a secret baby. And they play it off as a polygamy relationship that Kanaya totally is fine with. When we all know she is secretly hating that someone else is fucking her wife. And in the other timeline, Rose LEAVES her for someone else. Dirk Strider. Her fucking brother. To make a new universe without her in it. Rosebot would fuck with Dirk and pitch flirt with Terezi. So Kanaya not only lost her lover to a dog dick girl, but a gay bastard who reached Ultimate God Tier and the other troll friend she barely gave a glance back on the meteor besides maybe speaking with her in one or two Alterniabound sections. If Homestuck^2 would have continued, chances are that the narrative would screw Kanaya over. She would either be killed off, have Rose officially tell Kanaya they are over with and she is left alone again (but it is played as Kanaya trying to be strong and independent without her lover, despite all that happened), or the less likely chance, she goes full on yandere on realizing what happens to herself in both Candy and Meat timelines to kill everyone just to be with Rose forever. WhatPumpkin says they have finished the story for Homestuck^2, but never released it. I hope it never does. Because I don't want to hear what shit they did for Kanaya. So TL;DR, I do agree with you in those points. It had its good moments early on. But by the time Act 6, the dynamic between these two changed and both girls' character developments get fucked over. With Kanaya get the worst out of it when Andrew Hussie and WhatPumpkin decided to make shitty sequels to say "FUCK YOU" towards fans.

hello hello! didn't know if you were comfortable w/ DMs because you didn't mention them when you tagged me, but I'd love to learn more abt your s/i and their ship with Kaeya!

Dms are fine by me! (And also no u card because I wanna hear some info from u too!!)

But hm there are a lot of things that changed with my ship with him so a lot of things from my very old posts might be a little outdated. Tbh I mostly mean one short story I wrote.

Either way, it's a little bit hard to describe. I don't know what exactly you want to know. So I guess I'll just try to describe the dynamic! Time to Speedrun it.

My S/I (Heather) isn't too outgoing of a person. So at first her relationship with Kaeya was that she respected him so much to the point where she was "afraid" of him (which he found funny at first). But the longer she saw him around the more she came to be more comfortable around him. When they finally talked normally she was charmed right away which also made some things awkward again but it was in a good way this time. In the end their relationship became that Heather is often worried about him and sort of wants him to rely on her on some level while Kaeya tries to not let himself get too attached to her. He also was in huge denial for both her and his own feelings and found a way to excuse everything. Once they get together though Heather does a complete turn on how she acts around Kaeya, she wasn't shy or quiet anymore and worked more towards him not creating reasons for her to worry about him. He was of course surprised by her change of behavior but he was just so glad to see her be so comfortable around him while also being a little overwhelmed with the amount of affirmation and love she started to give him.

And ofc the whole thing with Diluc is also worth mentioning. She often tries to "force" Kaeya to not avoid him. When she's around during their conversation she tries to stop any petty arguments if the conversation goes that way and things like that.

I think that sums the whole thing up?

obviously (more than anything) I want to see Stede and Ed reunited and fuckery to ensue. I don’t much care how they play it (happy, sad, angry, silly) I just want more of them onscreen together. Rhys and Taika have such great chemistry. But I also want to see backgrounds for more of the crew (how they became the men they are). Particularly Izzy Hands. What made him like that? what made him worship Blackbeard so much? I also want to see a good sword fight between Izzy and Jim. (and more Jim backstory in general.) from the actual history of pirates of that time, I’d love it if we met Benjamin Hornigold (Ed’s former captain) and Samuel Bellamy (aka Black Sam aka “the Prince of Pirates” or the “Robin Hood” of pirates. He was known for his mercy and generosity to those he captured on raids. I think he’d get along well with Stede! Black Sam also had a mysterious relationship with a “witch” from Cape Cod named Goody Hallett. I’d love to meet them in season two! also the lesbian pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read! (I’d love it if we found Anne and Mary were behind the mutiny aboard Calico Jack’s ship. And they are now co-captaining it happily. Out on the open sea! Being gay and doing crimes!) I hope we deal thematically in season two with toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma. And forgiveness. and lord I hope it’s totally bizarre and super funny. imma be pissed if they lose any of the humor in season two and go too sappy. There’s so much potential! fingers crossed?

Woah okay lots to unpack here!!! I gotta say; I agree with pretty much everything you just said OP!!! Very well put!!!

I keep going back and fourth about how I want The Reunion between Ed and Stede to go down; whether it should be super romantic, or angsty, or a full-on sword fight, or if they should make it more comedic and lighthearted and tbh any route they decide to go with would be fine by me! I just wanna see them together again because i really do believe that one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) strengths of this show is Taika and Rhys together.

I would LOVE some more background on Izzy, but tbh I'm really interested in Stede's crew too!! I was wondering about this earlier actually so it's funny you bring it up lol, but i wonder how/why they agreed to be a part of Stede's crew? Like, maybe it was because he was offering to pay actual wages? Or maybe it was because they needed to hide somewhere (well, we know that is probably true for Jim and Olu, but what about everyone else..?) I would also be interested in Blackbeard and Calico Jack's past, and their experiences on Hornigold's ship

I definitely want to see more female pirates in season 2 as well!! As I mentioned in a previous ask, I'm not totally sure how they'd work it into the show yet considering the cast of characters is already pretty large and spread-out just in the first season, but it would lowkey feel like a missed opportunity if they didn't at least lightly feature Anne Bonny and Mary Read at some point

I definitely think we're gonna get more storylines about gender and toxic masculity in season 2, just judging from where episode 10 left us off. Like, idk if this is me just projecting my nonbinary-ness onto another one of my comfort characters lol but I just feel as though Ed taking on this "Kraken" persona at the end of ep 10 feels a lot like.. a transition? A changing of identity? And most of it is rooted in toxic masculinity and pressure placed on him to present/act a certain way (enforced by Izzy in ep 10 but probably taught to him when he was a child) because in the very beginning of episode 10, i think Ed was really beginning to embrace a more conventionally "feminine" side of himself (the pink nail polish, the floral robe, being very open and vulnerable emotionally with the other men on the ship and encouraging them to do the same, ect.) and I think a lot of season 2 is going to see Ed sorta struggling between these two identities a lot..

yeah i like gossip girl! i was at the height of that when i was 13 but its a nostalgic show for me. its not a show that i think too much abt ig. mostly i just quote it all the time w my sister. i have a gossip girl character as my icon now bc i like having matching icons w my sister! we like to switch through fictional friendships/sibling dynamics.

i also LOVE the office and also all sitcoms of that nature (i love parks and rec, superstore, new girl, etc. i love funny shows that focus on sentimental relationships that end up making me ugly cry. i think the office might be my fav but tbh i thought that abt superstore AND new girl before so idk if i even have a fav).

spy x family is a new anime im into these days! its found family and very cute!

anyway mikan time:

ONE OF MY FAV CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME. i talk abt natsume all the time so it might feel like hes my all time fav, but he and mikan actually share that place in my heart.

yes similarly i also felt she was annoying when i first watched the anime (i was twelve when i first got into it). at such a young age i had a tendency to get irritated with the female mcs in media (internalized misogyny, etc) and mikan was 1. loud 2. bold 3. stupid, which are naturally unforgivable traits for a character to have (sarcasm). when i rewatched/reread at 14 i realized that i was looking at her all wrong. around the time i started observing the ga tumblr fandom around age 15 (i only recently started being active in the ga fandom bc i was too nervous before), there was a pervasive idea that mikan was a mary sue.

UGH so let me go off real quick. i will talk way more abt mikan in my next nm essay, but ill summarize some of my ideas briefly for this. mikan’s arc is all about feeling useful, having agency, and how best to help others. she is maybe one of the few characters who undergoes OVERWHELMINGLY negative character development. i dont mean she was flanderized or ruined, i mean that this little girl started developing the idea that she should smile all the time and hide all her negative feelings in order to make OTHERS feel better. this is not good! but its treated like its good, like thats the best choice she can make (this is the actual reason that i only ship her romantically w natsume actually, but ill go into that in my essay). it can be fun for a character to devolve, to make the wrong choice, but this change wasnt treated that way.

another issue is i genuinely HATE mikan having the stealing alice. she should never have had the stealing alice. do i realize thats more than half the manga im talking about? YES. it completely upended her character arc. her nullification alice was so understated! she felt like it was useless and was SO insecure about it. then all of a sudden she has the stealing alice, which can be dangerous, but definitely cannot be called “useless” and her story about uselessness/having a “boring” alice just. falls short. yukas story w the stealing alice was so meaningful and impactful on its own. mikan ALMOST being the next yuka couldve been compelling if it didnt ruin the set-up that the entire first half of the manga was focusing on.

anyway mikan is NOT a mary sue for the above reasons. she is not effortlessly perfect. many people in the manga call her plain. she can be really stupid. she doesnt always save the day. in fact, other people often have to save her, making her feel useless (which is why she shouldve saved natsume. they were each other’s key to resolving arcs and yet. and YET.) she can be loud, brash, bold, and often says the wrong things. she has a really apparent character arc and calling her a mary sue ignores all that. ppl who think mikan is a mary sue are my worst enemy and i will fist fight them.

now ill talk a little about mikan in fanfics bc i think its worth mentioning, especially since i filled out that square abt her being done dirty. like i said, mikan is stupid. im not insulting her. some people are stupid. shes not good at academics. shes a lot more sporty than she is brainy. she rushes to conclusions and doesnt always think things through. shes not really a rational person all the time. fanfics often treat this stupidity as a negative trait to be fixed. maybe shes stupid when shes little but she’ll be a genius when she gets older! look how smart she is now! instead of just letting her be dumb. she has other traits, like deep empathy, athleticism, passion, optimism, that are often sacrificed in fanfic in order to make room for her made up intelligence.

mikan in fanfic (especially if shes supposed to be older) is often painted as more subdued than her loud manga counterpart, more often cynical, introverted, skeptical, etc., and ALWAYS pretty even if SHE doesnt see it (despite being described often as plain in the manga). i have some theories about this.

1: western fans are more comfortable making mikan like a western mc than one more typical of anime. if u think abt what a typical western female lead looks like, she’s usually less feminine, “not like other girls,” a smart bookworm who is cynical and rational. this is familiar so i think a lot of western fanfic writers end up leaning mikan this way even at the cost of making her unrecognizable. so mikan being stupid and loud and optimistic are all traits to be fixed, bc theyre not as familiar in a lead role.

2. fans want to have a mature mikan, and they think theres no way she can keep her childish traits, like stupidity, boldness, impulsiveness, and idealism, and NOT be a child. i find that ridiculous. why cant mikan be a giddy, happy, upbeat adult? why does she have to lose all the traits that make her mikan in order to demonstrate maturity?

3. i might be off base with all of these, but this one... i feel the most strongly about. mikan is the main character. in a lot of stories, the reader is invited to relate to the main character, to project onto her. often, the main character is vague or universal BC imagining her as you is the whole point. fanfic (especially the older fanfic) turns mikan into that easily recognizable and relatable mc we can insert ourselves into.

anyway i have a lot more thoughts on mikan, way more than i could ever say in one post (which is why im doing an essay series) but these are some basic thoughts i have. im sorry its so long.

Also I should probably make a tumblr account to talk to you (I stalked you here from your AO3 lol), I feel bad being anon and sending you hella lengthy ass messages like this with nothing to show for it 😂 but yes I adore your fics!! I got back into NIN over quarantine 3 years ago after previously not listening to them since hesitation marks came out and the hyperfixation just never seemed to go away!! Yes 100% the community for NIN RPF is soooo insurmountably tiny however of the very few people we have in this community, many of them seem interested in shipping Trent with M*nson and nothing/nobody else, with no consideration for other dynamics, which isn’t my thing, so coming across your content was LITERALLY a breath of fresh air. Your fics could stand to be a bit longer IMHO but they contain character (not caricatures), facts, and actually interesting plots unlike a lot of other NIN fics I’ve seen.

And man don’t even get me started on the general NIN fandom and its…rigidity and the pressures there are within it to be “perfect” somehow, while also managing to exclude other people and be stone cold af. I’ll always love the music but I left the fandom 2 years ago because of that. It just feels like one big overglorified clique nowadays. It’s funny ‘cause a lot of them act that way because they think it’s how Trent acts or that behavior will win them points with him when like.. that’s how ‘93 trent acted you fucking weirdos, it’s 2023. The best part is they’re doing so to try to meet standards that he himself doesn’t meet and doesn’t care to now that he’s a married father of five. Like the guy met his wife on Twitter, people. He’s on discord. He’s chronically online, just like us. He’s another person like we all are, so please chill tf out for ten seconds.

I'm very glad you found this blog from AO3! I linked it on my profile and a few of my fics, but sometimes it makes me feel like a bit of a self-promoter, you know?

I had actually gotten into NIN about a year before COVID happened and during quarantine I decided to dive fully into the fandom.

If we can get more people writing NIN fic, that would be great tbh.

I was never into Trent/M*nson, and what actually motivated me to actually write after years and years of wanting to write for any fandom (not just RPF) was that I wanted to see Trent paired with people no one was writing about. At some point I realized that the only way I could read those fics was writing them myself - so I that's what I'm doing right now! And I'm glad that my efforts in doing that have paid off - "breath of fresh" is a wonderful compliment ❤

I do agree with my fics needing to be longer. I'm actually trying to find ways to improve my writing (including actually reading as much as my ADHD brain will allow me), so I'm glad you pointed that out. I might actually rewrite some of my fics in the future with that in mind. There's a reason why I developed the habit of writing very short fics, but I won't get into that here for reasons.

Oh, the NIN fandom...I'm not really going to go into that whole mess because I'll be here forever, but I will say that there are certain types of people, no matter the website, that I just avoid for the sake of my mental health. I'm sorry all that caused you to leave the fandom :( There's some really cool people in the fandom, but you're right that a lot of it is just like a clique.

Honestly Trent had the right idea to quit Twitter for good a few months ago. I'm sure when he deleted his account, the sun shone a little brighter for him once he was finally free.

No the low jealousy does not mean they don't care, it means that I imagine they're just.. very secure about their devotion to one anther. They're both flirty and both liberal with their sexuality and they know that none of that threatens what they have.

Also smh i feel like they wouldn't be too huge on PDA? Like they're not averse to it but not super keen on it either. Which is funny cos I don't think they would mind with other people at all, only when it's the two of them

They are at their core just as sappy as fen and liam you can fight me on this

Kala & Alistair

Tbh most of their awkwardness comes from neither of them having any experience (plus their upbringings in general) and both of them having to figure everything out. It's nice figuring it out together tho :)

Yes Kala is a Dwarf yes she is a big spoon.

I can totally imagine Ali exaggerating screaming about bugs bc he thinks it's fun to be over dramatic (and to have kala come to the rescue)

I wasn't really sure where to put them on the protectiveness scale cos I imagine they are very chill most of the time, because they both know they can handle themselves just fine, but at the same time they have "don't you dare look at my partner wrong" kinda vibes

June & Cullen

not a romantic ship but I'd say that the.. *gestures vaguely* whatever they have still counts lol. They live together, in any case, so,,,,

FR why does June even buy clothes she just steals everyone else's anyway

Should've put June further towards the "affection through words" side cos she is very vocal about her feelings in general and on the other had struggles to show her love through actions properly

Can June drive a car? Questionable. Will she do it anyway? Take a lucky guess

I think it is very funny to think that they are both horny mfers, but June is very blunt about it while Cullen still has that chantry boy attitude about it lol

maybe should've raised cullen's jealousy meter p: the more i think about it the more he strikes me as the type to get jealous xd

Ari & Josie

They're so fun. I love them. I really don't talk about them enough

Took a while for Ari to start using pet names, and Josie does it a lot more, but it's turned into something like a game between them

They love cooking!! And they're mighty good at it too. Beware tho if you try their food, they like it hot and spicy

Josie may seem coy and proper but I think the would totally be up for PDA. Get people talking, cause a bit of a scandal, yknow? She doesn't cos Ari isn't fond of it, but she would.

Ari doesn't get super jealous, but he can't help being at lest a little surly when some snob gets overly flatter-y and honey-tongued with Josie.

i feel like they're both protective but in a passive way, if that makes sense? Like they know they are both well equipped to navigate the kinds of dangers they deal with, but they'll still take precautionary measures in the background to make extra sure nothing happens. And they're not in-your-face about it, but they know and appreciate it anyway

Okay you know what, I’ve held this back far enough

Why I hate canon Kailor sm

Im not gonna tag Kailor on this for obvious reasons plus this is kinda a long post, I don’t mind fanon Kailor mostly because tbh I don’t think it’s really a big thing and most I have seen of it is fine. Don’t read this if you like Kailor and don’t want to hear it bashed

Okay listen, s4 is my favorite season out of all ninjago, but if theres one thing I hate about it the most is Kailor. This ship has always been really annoying to me throughout the show, and I’ve hinted towards that in my blog. But why?

1. It’s basically jaya redone

Kailor brings nothing new or interesting to the table because honestly? It’s literally just the same dynamic as jaya. Socially awkward guy simps for usually unimpressed girl until she eventually caves in and they start dating.

Not only has this already been done before with jaya, but is also completely out of character for Kai to do.

While I admit seeing Kai as a flustered dork is kinda funny, once you realize the context of the situation that they’re in it’s pretty clear that Kai would never actually do this.

Reminder: Kai JUST found out his dead friend is alive and is forced to recognsizle with friends in order to get him back

Usually when Kai is presented in a situation like this, what he normally does is set himself dead first on the task at hand and usually ignores any distractions. He’s mostly distance and seemingly uncaring

((note this is after Zane died and Kai ran away from the ninja because of cole and jays bickering, knowing him he wouldn’t be the most excited to be back. His arc should have revolved around coming to terms with lost friendships due to death or distance but that never happens)).

What Kai DOESNT do is immediately fall head over heels for a girl he JUST meet to the point where even when he sees his DEAD FRIEND ALIVE AND WELL he completely ignores that for a girl he meet less then a week ago

This is something JAY would do, not KAI, Kai is a loyal friend who do anything to save his friends, he cherishes them and would fight god to help them with anything they need, he doesn’t forget them for someone new

It also does skylor unjustice as well, but we’ll get there when we get there

2. It adds nothing to the characters and is otherwise never mention again

You know how bad you fuck up a relationship if the best aspect of it is how it’s rarely on screen

Even considering the fact Kailor is just jayas dynamic, the connection between skylor and Kai feels completely non existent or one sided

Most of Kailor revolves around Kai simping for skylor

They have no common interests, common goals, they rarely actually talk outside of lloyds plan to overthrow chen

The whole relationship feels forced every time it’s brought up because of how disconnected they both are to eachother, Kai only likes skylor because she’s hot and that’s it, nothing else about her is actually interesting to Kai in anyway ((again sort out of character for him in this situation))

Skylor and Kai don’t form any genuine bond with eachother, it feels hallow and empty

Let’s compare this to lava, wait no that would be to easy, let’s compare this to pixane

Pixal and Zane both genuinely like and respect eachother, they both share bonds outside of being robots, they both care about eachother enough to know when they’re uncomfortable or need help

Kailor is barely mentioned past s4 and most of it in s4 is Kai being a creep

Oh yeah let’s get to that

3. It’s really really creepy

Im sorry I don’t find incest jokes funny ninjago, it’s just really uncomfortable and creepy

Hopefully this goes without saying but Kai thinking skylor is hot, figuring out they might be related and no longer finding her hot, and then finding out they aren’t and thinking she’s hot is really weird and creepy

Not to mention scenes like, Kai looking into her room without her knowledge or consent

Or Kai fighting people for her when it’s not necessary

Or him trying to impress her everytime he sees her

This isn’t cute or funny, it’s gross, privacy invading, and overall just very creepy and uncomfortable and most definitely not healthy

Again, this is REALLY out of character for Kai, Kai knows when to back off and respect people’s privacy

Literally the season before this he didn’t get involved in the love triangle probably because he knew that would make Nya’s situation worse

So for him to suddenly become this privacy evading perv is so grossly out of character for him and makes the whole relationship feel off and unhealthy

And finally

4. The whole thing is misogynistic

During this entire thing skylor doesn’t get a choice in the show once, she follows the commands of her dad before Kai tells her not to like her dad and follows his lead.

She doesn’t come to disliking her dad by her own thought, she was told to by Kai

She doesn’t get to do anything that SHE actually wants to do until LITERALLY the VERY END

She’s told by guys around her what she should do constantly, even without her being a love interest that’s just screams misogynistic to me ((Afab speaking anyways))

Everything about her character, down to the way she talks, who she’s allied with, and even sometimes how she looks is determined by male characters

Conclusion

If canon ships were shrek movies then kailor is easily shrek the third, a constant tired unfunny mess that caused everyone to think that these ships were shit ((to be fair Jaya is kinda bad to but at least it tired to get better))

There’s nothing redeeming about it to me, every time it’s viewed in a romantic setting it makes me groan or upset

What’s even more frustrating is how people constantly say lava can’t be canon because of it

Im going to go on a side tangent so you can just skip this part as it doesn’t add any actual substance to my argument

But it’s so frustrating to see people say that

Cole and Kai have had a much healthier relationship and would be a lot better for there characters

But no, this stupid misogynistic creepy ship where one side isn’t even consententing to it half the time is the one that has to stay canon because “it’s what the creators intended”

Lava isn’t the superior possibly canon relationship because it’s gay, it’s superior because it’s closer to a healthy working relationship in show then kailor has been ((fanon lava and kailor doesn’t count here because they’re isn’t any better fanon ship, Im just talking about in show))

But no it can’t be canon and it’s unfair for people to want it to be canon because tommy created this rlly shitty straight relationship for Kai instead
