One of the most annoying thing to happen to the marauders fandom is all the young dudes fic becoming extremely popular and everyone using it as canon material and not even reading the books or even watching the movies and only going by that fic. It's become so infectious, and inescapable. Like at this point the popular depiction of Remus and Sirius are so fanon. It's wild and wholly unenjoyable.

This is my opinion, skip if this doesn't vibe with you. But I'm allowed to complain.

Someone on tiktok made a slideshow of things in the books that they wish would’ve been included in the films, one of them being the marauders choking and SA’ing snape in SWM, and the comments were a bunch of their stans saying “anyway stan james potter” are y’all hearing yourselves?

I’ve literally never read ATYD but from what I’ve heard I feel like canon teen Snape would want to strangle him to death himself. Idk homie gives the vibes of the Marauders but evil and green.

Snape Gang Fanfiction

Ok I've decided, I'll start publishing a fanfiction about the Marauders Era but which focuses on the Snape Gang. (there will also be parts with the marauders of course, a multi pov)

I really want there to be a fair story, showing the real classism of that period and the bullying of the Marauders towards Snape and other students. Let's put it this way, this is my way of fighting ATYD.

one thing- and this may be a personal gripe of mine,- is when people take "fanfiction is free" a little TOO seriously? like people are allowed to not like them as long as they're not rude about it without reason or to point out problematic themes in them.

i feel like atyd is a great example of this. the fact that they weren't paid doesn't mean mkb didn't have racist and misogynistic themes and well as a slur used in one of the spinoffs. that goes beyond just a personal preference. (im talking about the characterizations of the female characters not just that one sirius line. bechdell test? atyd has never heard of her)

but even regarding the sirius thing, it wasn't realistic for him. maybe for the blatant mischaracterization of him, but sirius respected women. he spoke very highly of the women around him and he even gave bellatrix (who he hated for good reason) the credit for her skill and strength to be a terrible person.

the only real claim you can make against him were the posters but he said himself that was to piss off his mom. his mom clearly valued magic and modesty, so he naturally went to the opposite when trying to mess with her.

and even if it was 'realistic' women don't have to like things and feel love and respect and sympathy for characters who wouldn't respect them?

like mkb did do a lot of work for the marauders fandom and good for them but people tend to push these themes a little too close to the sun.

The people who insist for some god forsaken reason on pulling out of their ass (ATYD) that Severus Snape, genius Potions Master Protege, actually copied everything in his HBP textbook from JAMES POTTER of all people fills me with a rage I can’t describe.

I don’t get why All the Young Dudes (the fic— the song is so good omg) is so— popular and liked?? Like it’s the most loved fic on AO3 and I don’t get why. I’m glad for the author it did so well but like… the fic isn’t even that great I’m sorry. The characterisations are god-awful and they’re so bland?? Like Remus, my poor child, got destroyed so badly. Like he’s just a rude asshole whose action gets justified because he’s a hot Casanova and because his dad killed himself?? And Sirius… I can’t even talk about what happened to him. HE DESERVES SO MUCH BETTER!😭 And just the story in general is so boring?? There’s like nothing happening. Also I hate how this fic is considered canon material and some people ACTUALLY believe that it’s canon. Like one person genuinely thought Remus was an orphan with a dead dad (I don’t blame them but it infuriated me.) ATYD ruined the marauders fandom, the marauders characters, and hell even marauders merchandise 😭 so sick of seeing THAT line on every single piece of merch. Istg at this point there will be a toilet seat that has that line on it. And do not even get me started on that Grant guy😭..

Can someone do a post explaining why the severus snape of ALL THE YOUNG DUDES is a BAD WITH NO SENSE characterization of Snape?

Because I was saying that the author is totally biased (not hate but come on, lest admit the true) and and someone answered me that Snape's characterization in that fic was good and canon compliant, and yeah totally made sense with the canon student snape era

I’m so glad I found your blog because I thought I was going absolutely insane by disliking ATYD. It’s damn near impossible to find marauders era fan media that hasn’t been completely intertwined with the ATYD characterisation and I find it so frustrating, because I seriously do not understand what the big deal about this fanfic is 😭 it’s actually put me off my favourite characters now (lupin and snape) when I read the actual stuff and get war flashbacks from that godforsaken thing

Oh don’t worry, there’s definitely a lot of other people who share your dislike of that fic. The amount of mischaracterisation in that fic is insane, I can handle some inaccurate stuff (as painful as it may be to read) but I literally had to quit reading it purely because of how off-putting it was 💀 like no offence to the author or anything but goddamn that fanfic is directly responsible for 89% of my trauma from Marauder stans
