a bit of info on working with archangels 🕯️
the archangels, and angels in general, are beings that will never intercede without your expressed consent! they believe in free will which means that they will only work with you, give you messages, etc., if you are open and willing to receive their divine messages.
a common misconception is that angels will only help those who are religious (i.e. christian, jewish, muslim) but that is not the case! angels have nothing but love for humans and nature so they aren’t tied to any specific religious affiliation, though they come from a more religious background.
each archangel, and angel, has their own areas of expertise when it comes to guidance but nothing is beyond them! so you can essentially reach out to any angel for anything and they will do their best to help you.
i’m going to briefly talk about seven of the main archangels and list some correspondences and offerings as well!
archangel michael - the great defender
archangel michael is the great defender of all that is good. he can be called upon for help with strength and courage as well as general protection.
he is associated with the sun tarot card
offerings include: frankincense, rosemary, basil, white or blue candles, selenite, water, letters or prayers addressed to him
archangel raphael - the divine healer
archangel raphael is the divine healer. he assists with physical healing as well as emotional healing. he is especially popular with healers and those who work in the medical field.
he is associated with the strength tarot card
offerings include: lavender, rosemary, chamomile, peppermint, green candles, fresh flowers, emeralds, water, letters or prayers addressed to him
archangel gabriel - the messenger
archangel gabriel is a messenger who helps people learn how to communicate effectively. he can help you find the words you need to get your point across. he helps artists, writers, and teachers.
he is associated with the moon tarot card
offerings include: lavender, jasmine, lily, white candles, moonstone or clear quartz, water, letters or prayers addressed to him
archangel uriel - the hermit
archangel uriel is a wizened hermit figure who helps us deal with feelings of loneliness that can become overwhelming at times. he helps us learn how to be alone without feeling lonely.
he is associated with the hermit tarot card
offerings include: sandalwood, frankincense, cinnamon, red or gold candles, citrine, water, letters or prayers addressed to him
archangel chamuel - the peace bringer
archangel chamuels main mission is to bring peace to the world. you can call on him when you're suffering from anxiety or if you need help forgiving someone. he is especially helpful when it comes to relationship troubles.
he is associated with the lovers tarot card

archangel zadkiel - the forgiver
archangel zadkiel is who you should call when it comes to forgiveness as a whole. he helps regulate emotions and work through them so we can feel that sense of forgiveness for others and ourselves.
he is associated with the temperance tarot card
offerings include: rose, lavender, chamomile, eucalyptus, purple candles, amethyst, engaging in acts of service like volunteering or donating, water, letters or prayers addressed to him
archangel jophiel - the transformer
archangel jophiel is responsible for the positive transformations we go through in life. he encourages inner journeys that help us to discover our passions.
he is associated with the star tarot card
offerings include: chamomile, lemon balm, sunflower yellow or orange candles, yellow jasper, spending time in nature, practicing positive affirmations, water, letters or prayers addressed to him

the inspiration for creating these is the fact i live in a very dangerous environment for the religions i practice. thus, i decided to create prayer beads with a subtle, rather than clear reference to who i worship. these are prayer beads for those who cannot practice safely or comfortably, and thus, any prayer beads i create will be created with the intention of being light references to the spirit in question, rather than being obvious.

Jewish Angel Work
I don't see a bunch of writing about angel work in general, and what I do find is often heavily Christianized! I wanted to talk about what angel work can look like from a Jewish perspective.
(Gentiles may interact and enjoy, but understand that this is for educational purposes and not an invitation to appropriate! 🤍)
A Jewish-Specific Perspective
Judaism views angels in ways other traditions may not share! Some examples:
Angels aren't former humans. They are their own distinct beings just like demons, cows, land spirits and butterflies. People who pass away, even children, are not considered "angels returning home." These angels have specific forms and looks depending on the type, some more humanoid than others.
Angels don't have free will. This does not mean they are held hostage or can't have their own personalities, but their will is an extension of HaShem's Will, serving a specific role in making that Will manifest. Kind of like employees in a corporation doing their tasks!
They don't have names. Or at least, they don't have names we're supposed to know or ask for. They may be incomprehensible to humans, or maintaining a level of anonymity as to not distract from HaShem. Either way, asking for a name is often discouraged in traditional texts.
They AREN'T all here to help you. While it all serves a Divine Will and is therefore Good in the grand scheme of things, many angels serve completely neutral functions from a human perspective. Some could even be considered harmful to humans, the most prominent example being HaSatan. (Even still, HaSatan isn't seen as a true villain. He's just doing his job.)
Some of them are ONLY here to help you! Historical Rabbis were big on the concept of guardian angels. The Talmud says "Every blade of grass has its Angel that bends over it and whispers, 'Grow, grow.'" (Midrash Rabba, Bereshit 10:6.) Every living creature, including you, has a guardian angel to help you along your path. Some translations say the angels hit the grass, and that's not the only story of angels smacking things, so that guidance isn't always gentle, but it's always in the right direction.
Types of Angel Work
Spirit guides. Like mentioned above, guardian angels can help encourage you to "Grow! Grow!" and keep you on a path in line with spiritual health and lovingkindness.
Communing with HaShem. Gd is extremely esoteric. Angels help us send and recieve messages in an easier-to-conceptualize way! Meditation and prayer can also play into this. Beyond every-day applications, angels can also appear unexpectedly with important messages.
Communicating with other spirits. As angels are often messengers, I also think it's helpful to call upon their aid when working with other spirits!
Working with angels of various functions. Modern day Rabbis often marry angelic theology with scientific phenomena, with angels overseeing the process. By that extent, we could ask those angels for help/guidance when relevant!
Protection. Psalm 91, often recited for protection, depicts HaShem commanding angels on your behalf to guard you in all ways. One bedtime prayer names the four archangels to surround us.
Shalom Aleichem is traditionally sung on Friday nights before Shabbat dinner. It invites angels of peace to basically come and hang out with us during shabbat, then to leave in peace once shabbat is over. Many arrangements also make a good lullaby.
Other Notes
Metatron (מֶטָטְרוֹן) is a specifically-Jewish angel who gets appropriated a lot in spiritual circles. He does not appear in the Tanakh, but is mentioned in the Talmud and largely fleshed out in kabbalistic literature! (Islamic literature does mention him by different name, ميططرون, Mitatrun/Mitatrush. Solidarity.)Lots of people recognize Lilith as closed, but the same attention hasn't been given to Metatron. He's a very complex and ambiguous figure worth a whole post of his own so I won't get into it here!
This post is by no means comprehensive! This is just a very "quick" overview of a very rich field of study.

There’s a reason why the angel of beauty and wisdom dawns a flaming sword. There’s a reason why my Lord Lucifer, who is brilliant and transcendent and beautiful is also terrible and horrifying and intimidating. I remember very vividly when the God of Love told me plainly that “love doesn’t save the day”.
Love is purity. Beauty is born from this same purity. What is precious is fragile, and what is fragile is vulnerable. What we need then, is not love, but courage, strength, passion, and will. We protect what is precious because it is pure. Love is not the fighting force, but the force that is fought for. Love will not save the day, you will save the day in the name of Love.”
I remember speaking with Jophiel, an angel who is precious to so many, and he spoke of love as if it were a child, so easily influenced and corrupted. For Jophiel is made of this same light, and so he keeps his sword close to him. I do wonder how Jophiel navigates the topic of corruption.
Relationships aren’t built only off of love, you can love someone to pieces and still not trust them, depend on them, or feel safe with them. You can love your abuser.
Ugh
I had something to say here about Lilith and war, why so many entities associated with love are also influenced by rage and violence. Why a loving God like Lucifer with destroy all those who threaten his kin. Why Innana my Lady of Heaven is a fearsome and fiery Goddess.
I think about the Abrahamic God and how he has been asserted to be “all good” and yet unacting, distant, stagnant in a way. How every beautiful thing is compared, and how even angels know their vulnerabilities. Why beautiful things cannot only be beautiful if they hope to do anything, for beauty is too occupied in being beautiful. How a creature can be so beautiful that they must also be terrible. Why is it the angel of beauty who protects the garden of eden? Is it because he knows how vulnerable that pure beauty is? Is he the only one capable of truly protecting it, because he is it?

I don’t know how to properly string these thoughts together. Oh well.

Hi! You mentioned in your tags several days ago that angels (& demons?) are more like mushrooms than computers, would you happen to have places to look into that comparison more?

Sorry for the late reply, and sorry- no. This honestly just comes from my own experience (I suppose I should have said 'UPG' in those tags).
The reason I find angels to be a bit like mushrooms is because angels, like mushrooms, are a form made up by the very same substance that makes the vast network they are apart of. All the same network, and yet aware that they are themselves and capable of communicating with their various aspects.
Themselves yet together.
Now unlike mushrooms, angels very much have seats of power and governance. There is a hierarchy and I have appealed to numerous angels of various status- but there has always been something different in my interactions with angels that I couldn't quite put my finger on until I read Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake (particularly one passage that I couldn't seem to find again). There is a strange sort of uncanny lack of personal-identity to most angels, and a kind of unrelenting, unblinking, sameness that reminds me a lot of what Merlin Sheldrake describes in his book (I say most because some angels, particularly the more well known ones, do have rather large personalities for reasons that I may explain some other time). It just seemed apt as a metaphor in the way they communicate and function in comparison to other spirits- and how they are, like, everywhere.
When I sing in Encohian, anywhere at any time- the shower in spring, the forest in summer, around a fire with friends in winter- it feels like I'm lifting up a moldy old log, or looking under knotted tree roots, and noticing rings of mushrooms. It's not that the angels are summoned to me- they're just already there, beneath the wet earth that is our physical reality.

This is kind of a long post, it’s about my journey so far trying to find higher beings to work with. Any advice or analysis is welcome, I want as much perspective as I can get😊
So the first entity that I interacted with was Ezekiel, angel of prophecy. I honestly never imagined working with angels and was thinking of other deities to work with, two that called to me were Isis and Baphomet. He said that he had been looking after me as best he could and checking in from time to time. As I was talking to him he also said that he would not work with any non-angelic deities because he had seen it go wrong many times where an angel and a deity ended up hurting the person they were trying to help due to their differences.
He said that the choice is mine if I want to pursue other deities and not have him with me, but that if I decide to have him leave he will not be coming back. I chose to keep having him as my guardian, and I’m glad I did so. I think that was a test. Later on, he told me that I have an ability that was long lost to the hands of mankind, and that it will take a lot of time and effort to find out what it is, if I ever find out at all.
That was a month or two ago, and recently I called for other angels to come work with me, to guide me and to give me different perspectives and ideas. I specifically called for any beings that Ezekiel would be willing to work with, and three angels showed up that night. They said that they are assistants to the angels and archangels, and that my call was heard and they were sent to evaluate me and see what angel(s) would be a good fit to assign to me. Apparently Ezekiel wasn’t assigned to guide me, he just chose to do so because he saw potential in me.
So now I have three angels that pop in and out of my house watching me, which is very nerve wrecking, and it’s just such an unimaginable situation. I’m so scared that they���re going to decide I’m not worthy of any angel, even though I know that’s unlikely. They also said I was “more important than [I] know,” which totally isn’t anxiety inducing either.

This is really random but does anyone have any good, comprehensive resources/lists on angels and demons (other entities welcome as well!) that aren’t closed or appropriated? I know there are particular entities that only appear in particular closed religions, like Judaism, but the lists I’ve found are pretty short and just the most popularly appropriated ones. And a lot of popular demon knowledge in particular comes from Ars Goetia and other books that many view as problematic and/or appropriative, so finding works that don’t reference those kinds of things is rough. Are some of these okay to work with, as long as one does not use the information and methods described in these types of sources, or would they in and of themselves be off limits?
I don’t currently do any work with angels, demons, or similar entities at the moment, just my deities, but I am really into angelology and demonology and just general spiritual & religious stuff as a pagan/witch. But finding good resources in witchy communities that isn’t some type of appropriative is so painful cuz there’s just…. so much of it. 💀
(P.S. I hope it’s not a dick move to put some Jewish witch tags on here but since most of these issues do affect Judaism in particular like I mentioned, I thought a Jewitch perspective would probably be most helpful in my search!)

Angel Work: Introduction and Hierarchy - The Seraphims
Angels are powerful spiritual beings, that can accompany us and guide us through our spiritual life on Earth. We may find angels mainly on monotheist religions such as Christianity, Judaism and even Islam.
The Kabbalah was the first religious text where Angels are spoken of. There’s 72 angels regrouped in 9 families. Each of these families is headed by a specific Archangel.
This post as a purpose for you to learn more about Angels. While reading through it, you may find and connect with some of them. I would advice for you to choose a family first and then one angel to start your working. But really, listen to your gut and allow their energy to flow through you.
This trend will have 9 parts, for each family: Seraphims, Cherubins, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels.
Family 1 - The Seraphim, lead by Archangel Metatron
- The Seraphim family are considered as the most powerful. You can call upon them whenever you're facing a particular blockage (any kind, spiritual, love or financial), if you feel overwhelmed by negative feelings or need to regain hope. Their power help on purifying, on helping healing old deep wounds and to open new doors in different domains.
- Metatron: From his name Metatron “the one who sits beside God”, the archangel is the most powerful one, the supreme spiritual being that holds the knowledge of spirituality and wisdom

How do you pray to angels? Is there a specific format you have to use, or do you just do it? Do I have to be formal?
praying to angels is just like praying to anyone/anything else! it’s going to vary from person to person since it’s such a personal thing but i usually “pray” to the angels like this: “dear archangel ____ , please listen to my prayers and give me strength and guidance to get through _____ . thank you for listening to me.”
it’s completely up to you when it comes to how or why you pray to them! sometimes i’ll just be sitting in my room and i’ll go “michael please give me the strength to read this chapter for class” and then boom! motivation appears!
i’m sure there are more formal ways to pray to them if you look it up,, i don’t come from a very religious background so i’m not the most comfortable with formal prayers but i hope this helps!

genuinely people act like working with both angels (and other similar figures) and demons is some sort of almighty wrong for both parties
but may i gently suggest that they're less about being at each other's throats all the time and more about understanding that someone's spirituality can be extremely complex?
idk, i genuinely believe both demons and angels are above the idea of "pick a side". if someone wants to work with angels and demons, i don't think it's going to be this almighty attack on who they work with
you really don't have to complicate things any further than saying a person can work with two different entities. whether it's angels, demons, saints, gods, spirits... they're not gonna hate you for working with two or more different kinds of spirits out there. they really aren't.

Interrogating an Angel- Ritual Report July 30, 2023
This is a post I made quite some time ago on my Reddit but I think its relevant to this page. I know a lot more about this situation now, but it’s still interesting so I’ll share it here.

“I just need to talk about this because it’s something that has been warping my brain lately and I find it so deeply interesting.
I work with the Archangel Jophiel and I ask him a lot of questions. I’m recalling a lot of our conversations now and it’s starting to make me spiral.
Recently I asked Jophiel about his origins. I’m in the process of writing a book in which there is a character based off of him. Jophiel is usually a fountain of information, he usually doesn’t have to “think” about my questions. But he kind of went quiet and thought very carefully about his answers.
He told me that he was an Angel of the Lord, I asked him who his father was, he said he does not have a biological father but was created by The Father. I asked him which God that is and he said “I was created from energy of Saturn, Jupiter and Venus. I am of the Divine Wisdom and Beauty-“ and he said a lot of other things but again, it was kind of weird and he avoided saying the name of any one known god in particular. Very descriptive but not definitive.
I asked if he was created by Yahweh, and he said “I was and I was not. I was not… to you I am not, right now, no. I am many things. I was created by The Creator.” ????? like what?
Which is also extremely interesting to me because that implies that Yahweh is and isn’t the creator. -and this was the first time Ive seen an angel express anything akin to frustration.
But he is subordinate to him. He confirmed that he serves Yahweh. He was not created by Yahweh??? And yet he still affirms that he is one of his angels “at times” and “in ways” but not right now?
Even more confusing, he explicitly told me that he was not created by the same God as Archangel Micheal. But he also was. He then immediately said that he works very closely with and loves Micheal, but they are not “of the same source”.
Did you come from the same pantheon?
“*No*”
And then he immediately added they were both created by “The Creator”. He said this in a way that implied that he wanted to add that detail to clear things up.
Metaphorical?
“No, I am being very literal,” and again, that strange kind of apprehension. Very strange.
I asked if he was of the same source as Haniel, an angel he introduced me to and I also work quite close with.
He said “I think not, but we are close and I love her very much.” I *think* not. Implying he’s not entirely sure. This is like one of the only things he’s ever expressed doubt about. In fact Jophiel has never really even used the words “I think” when talking to me before.
But you were both created by The Creator?
“Yes. As we all are.”
So they were created by different sources but of the same “Creator”.
What is the name of The Creator?
“God.”
“But what is that God’s name? You have a name, Jophiel. What is your creator’s name?”
“It is *God.*” - he said this like he was exhausted. Again, not something he has ever expressed before. Never has he ever seemed apprehensive about a subject. And he wasn’t necessarily apprehensive, but he was strangely aloof. Like he could not find the words to describe what he was saying. Interesting for an Angel who has so much to do with language.
I asked if he is the same type of entity as Micheal and Haniel, and he said yes, but they are different in many ways.
“We are all Archangel.”
Are Archangels the same creatures as other angels?
“That question doesn’t really make sense to me.”
???? of all of the questions I’ve ever asked, this is the one that doesn’t make sense? Why?
Did you come from the same source?
And then he asked me to define what I meant by source. I said God, Yahweh is an example of a Creator God. I listed Gods like Thor and Ra, he said:
“No.”
Were you created by one or many entities?
“Yes.”
Are you a god?
“*No*, Jophiel is not a god.”
-First time he’s ever referred to himself in the third person.
???????
He used space as an analogy. He said something along the lines of :
“A person of Earth will say they are created from Earth, and a person of Mars will say they were created from Mars, but both are of the Milky Way Galaxy. I am of God, he is of God, and as are you. But we are not of the same sources. We are, and we are not. Sometimes I am and sometimes I am not depending on the context. Yahweh created me sometimes. But to you, no. He did not.”
What about without me, just innately? Without any humans to observe you, what are you when you are alone? Who is your creator then?
He said that when he is alone, he is not Jophiel. Jophiel is known to humanity.
It’s so complex and confusing. But somehow it almost makes sense. Have you guys ever been told anything like this by an Angel or any entity? I’m curious to hear what your interpretations of this information are. Does it align with or go against what you’ve been told by others?? I’m so so curious.”

Since then this explanation makes a lot more sense to me, and Jophiel has since elaborated about himself far more. At the time I did not posses enough knowledge about the operations of the universe to make sense of these answers. It’s interesting to look back on these conversations in hindsight knowing what I know now.

Hi I am starting to add angel work in my practice. Specifically Archangel Gabriel !
I am very excited and nervous. I tried to stray away from the Catholic religion for personal reasons, but I feel like now is a new time for me and I am opening up to new parts of my practice. If anyone who knows information about Archangel Gabriel feel free to info dump, link resources, or talk about your own experiences if you feel comfortable sharing. I am using other resources but I would like to hear other practitioners. I would like for you to not talk about God or Jesus to much I am not working with them ! Also please don’t preach on this post !
