Jewish Angel Work
Tumblr media
I don't see a bunch of writing about angel work in general, and what I do find is often heavily Christianized! I wanted to talk about what angel work can look like from a Jewish perspective.
(Gentiles may interact and enjoy, but understand that this is for educational purposes and not an invitation to appropriate! 🤍)
A Jewish-Specific Perspective
Judaism views angels in ways other traditions may not share! Some examples:
Angels aren't former humans. They are their own distinct beings just like demons, cows, land spirits and butterflies. People who pass away, even children, are not considered "angels returning home." These angels have specific forms and looks depending on the type, some more humanoid than others.
Angels don't have free will. This does not mean they are held hostage or can't have their own personalities, but their will is an extension of HaShem's Will, serving a specific role in making that Will manifest. Kind of like employees in a corporation doing their tasks!
They don't have names. Or at least, they don't have names we're supposed to know or ask for. They may be incomprehensible to humans, or maintaining a level of anonymity as to not distract from HaShem. Either way, asking for a name is often discouraged in traditional texts.
They AREN'T all here to help you. While it all serves a Divine Will and is therefore Good in the grand scheme of things, many angels serve completely neutral functions from a human perspective. Some could even be considered harmful to humans, the most prominent example being HaSatan. (Even still, HaSatan isn't seen as a true villain. He's just doing his job.)
Some of them are ONLY here to help you! Historical Rabbis were big on the concept of guardian angels. The Talmud says "Every blade of grass has its Angel that bends over it and whispers, 'Grow, grow.'" (Midrash Rabba, Bereshit 10:6.) Every living creature, including you, has a guardian angel to help you along your path. Some translations say the angels hit the grass, and that's not the only story of angels smacking things, so that guidance isn't always gentle, but it's always in the right direction.
Types of Angel Work
Spirit guides. Like mentioned above, guardian angels can help encourage you to "Grow! Grow!" and keep you on a path in line with spiritual health and lovingkindness.
Communing with HaShem. Gd is extremely esoteric. Angels help us send and recieve messages in an easier-to-conceptualize way! Meditation and prayer can also play into this. Beyond every-day applications, angels can also appear unexpectedly with important messages.
Communicating with other spirits. As angels are often messengers, I also think it's helpful to call upon their aid when working with other spirits!
Working with angels of various functions. Modern day Rabbis often marry angelic theology with scientific phenomena, with angels overseeing the process. By that extent, we could ask those angels for help/guidance when relevant!
Protection. Psalm 91, often recited for protection, depicts HaShem commanding angels on your behalf to guard you in all ways. One bedtime prayer names the four archangels to surround us.
Shalom Aleichem is traditionally sung on Friday nights before Shabbat dinner. It invites angels of peace to basically come and hang out with us during shabbat, then to leave in peace once shabbat is over. Many arrangements also make a good lullaby.
Other Notes
Metatron (מֶטָטְרוֹן) is a specifically-Jewish angel who gets appropriated a lot in spiritual circles. He does not appear in the Tanakh, but is mentioned in the Talmud and largely fleshed out in kabbalistic literature! (Islamic literature does mention him by different name, ميططرون, Mitatrun/Mitatrush. Solidarity.)Lots of people recognize Lilith as closed, but the same attention hasn't been given to Metatron. He's a very complex and ambiguous figure worth a whole post of his own so I won't get into it here!
This post is by no means comprehensive! This is just a very "quick" overview of a very rich field of study.

Florence Welch song lyrics that feel like prayers:
Oh Lord, won't you leave me, leave me on my knees 'Cause I belong to the ground now And it belongs to me...
I want no more than this.
-"Mother
Literally all of "No Choir"
Well can you see me? I cannot see you Everything I thought I knew has fallen out of view In this blindness I'm condemned to Well can you hear me? I cannot hear you Every song I thought I knew, I've been deafened to And there's no one left to sing to
-"Casandra"
And I want you so badly, but you could be anyone I couldn't hide from the thunder in a sky full of song
-"Sky Full of Song"

The Seraphim
"We stand directly in the sight of God – the Seraphim."
Tumblr media
Seraphim Tetramorph, Cathedral of Santa Maria Nuova, Monreale, Sicily, 12th century
Their name, woven from a fiery song, comes from Hebrew saraf, meaning „to burn“ / „to scorch“. In the Bible, the Seraphim are mentioned by Isaiah, when the prophet recounts the vision of these beings. They are described to be standing over Adonai and having six wings. According to Isaiah, they use two wings to cover their faces, with another pair they cover their feet and they use the remaining two to fly. The prophet also recounts the powerful voices of these beings, as well as their ability to instantly remove evil. We are introduced to the latter by a certain Seraph that brings a piece of hot coal to Isaiah's lips and proclaims that by this act all evil is ritually cleansed from his soul.
Tumblr media
Ninth Vision of Hildegard of Bingen, Personification of God’s Power, 12th century
It's interesting to note that the word „seraph“, when appearing elsewhere in the Old Testament, is referring to venomous snakes. It is unclear why, although some have suggested that the Seraphim, beings recounted by Isaiah, were in some way serpentine. When mentioning snakes himself, the same prophet also describes them as flying.
Tumblr media
Seraphim and Angels, 'Queen Mary Psalter', 14th century
The visual image of these beings most probably has its roots in the Assyrian-Babylonian iconography. That is no surprise since Hebrew culture was influenced by the Mesopotamian world, amongst others. Therefore, earlier artists of the Christian world most likely translated the Assyrian winged genies - daimons into another visual and cultural language. That is how the story of angels in art begins.
Seraphim are commonly depicted with six colored wings. However, the iconographic distinction of angelic hierarchies had diminished over time as artists left the imagination of the hierarchies to the eye of each beholder.

Thank you, Archangel Michael.
Thank you for cutting anyone who isn't in alignment with my highest good out of my life.
Thank you for my beautiful home.
Thank you for my therapy cat.
Thank you for my talented therapist.
Thank you for the recent development and insights into managing my health.
Thank you for the quality of friends currently entering my life. I can tell the people who make time for me now want to see me succeed and make the most of every opportunity ahead.
I invite you to keep guiding, protecting, and influencing me so I may make more decisions that are conducive to my goals.
I love where I am at in life and where I see myself headed thanks to you. Please send me signs to remind me of this on days my faith wavers.
In Jesus Christ's name I pray,
Amen

The Clever Way Archangel Michael Introduced Me To Archangel Raguel
Tumblr media
A couple of years ago I dreamt of wandering a hallway that reminded me of what people may walk through in an old prestigious academic institution. In my wandering, I would curiously open doors-not to find anything but to explore. At one point I opened a door and found a humanoid looking entity glowing, flashing, and shifting from one part of a large open room to another with intense speed.
I asked if it was an angel in anyway, and without hesitation of thought or movement it projected, “We are all an aspect of God!” I was then guided out of the room by someone/something behind me, only to realize I was in a completely different room that gave me library vibes. I say this only because I was not focused on the room itself but who was in it.
A very tall golden man with illuminating eyes of a vibrant blue color walked directly into my focus and almost seemed to lower himself or help me adjust my line of sight because he was just THAT BIG. He came off as strong and capable- making me feel secure & safe within his presence. His smile wide and brilliant. He was so friendly!
Now here comes the clever part!
“Who are you?”, I asked.
“My name is Miguel.” His eyes gazed at me softly, but maintained their power and steadiness.
I instantly responded with recognition due to my two years of required foreign language in high-school, “ Oh, that’s Michael in English! So Archangel Michael??” He nodded with gentle encouragement as he ushered for another man who looked exactly like him - a twin I thought- who had the same fiery eyes in radiant purple to stand next to him and introduce himself.
“And what about him? What is your name?”
“My name is Raguel.” He smiled just the same. The gears in my head stopped turning.
“I’m sorry don’t know that name in Spanish??” I definitely never heard of an angel named Raguel either. I woke up. I figured what I dreamt of was not a real spiritual encounter but just my brains projection of one in a dream.
I proceeded to look up the name to attempt to find the English equivalent, only to get search results pertaining to:
An Archangel Named Raguel.
When I thought about it, I realized that Michael may have used Spanish to help me retain Raguel’s name, because when I’m in a dream (that’s not lucid) information is instantly deemed as made up & unreal if it is not something that I perceive to be real during my waking life. So I will instantly discard it. So the fact that he used Spanish made me curious about the the possible “Spanish” name I never heard of.

ʚ♡⃛ɞ Full Moon This Tuesday on Samael Day ʚ♡⃛ɞ
Tumblr media
ʚ♡⃛ɞ Samael deals with bravery, physical strength, overthrowing enemies, asserting yourself, standing up for yourself, athletics, and many other things associated with assertion
ʚ♡⃛ɞ This full moon will help with releasing any issues dealing with these things so that you can feel more energized
ʚ♡⃛ɞ The moon will be in Sagittarius which is associated with Zadkiel
ʚ♡⃛ɞ Zadkiel acts like a “professor angel” who helps with studying, mental concentration, and efficient memorizing as he has also the “angel of good memory”. He also helps with being open minded so that you are able to take in more information
ʚ♡⃛ɞ So this full moon will deal with the releasing of issues dealing with courage and assertion in the realm of the open mind and higher knowledge
ʚ♡⃛ɞ Don’t be afraid to: assert what you know, say that you are “right” about something, question what other people are telling you is the “right” way, learn more about certain topics, see more perspectives, open other people’s minds as well as your own
ʚ♡⃛ɞ Also don’t allow other people to force their viewpoints and beliefs onto you
ʚ♡⃛ɞ A good prayer to say: “Dear Archangel Samael, thank you for giving me the courage to stand up with courage and fight for what I believe in”

The Cherubim
• The bearers of the great mystery Praying in the spaces well-known but unseen That is the nature of the Cherubim. •
■ From an Akkadian verb 'karābu', meaning “to pray” or “to bless”
Tumblr media
William Blake, Ezekiel's Wheels, 1803-05
Understanding the Cherubim isn't easy. Their description varies and so does their placement in the hierarchy of angels. In the Exodus, Israelites were to make golden statues of these beings for the ark of testimony. It was Them who took part in the expulsion of first humans from Paradise, as they are the sacred guardians of the Tree of Life. They appeared to the prophet Ezekiel as figures with four faces: one of man, one of an ox, a lion and a griffon vulture.
Thomas Aquinas, a medieval dominican friar and well-known scholastic philosopher, theorized that Satan himself comes from the order of Cherubs.
Tumblr media
James Tissot, The Soul of the Good Thief, 1886-1894
Iconographically, the visual image of the Cherubim is most often rather similar to the one of the Seraphim, the highest order of angels. Since the Cherubim are considered to exist right next to them, dwelling in the first sphere and being closest to Godhead, maybe artists of our world found no reason to separate them visually.
Artistic iconography from the late 15th century turned the Cherubim into chubby child-like spirits with small wings, disregarding the fearsome nature of angels belonging to the order of Cherubim.

I started reading Angelic Protection Magick by Ben Woodcroft. This morning, I stood up and tried the instructions from the "Body of Protection" ritual. I like how simple and straightforward it is. It doesn't require any elaborate tools- just my voice and visualization.
I already feel peace growing in my heart. It's going to be a good day. I look forward to trying ALL the rituals in this handy little guide as it feels appropriate. They're all pretty relevant to my struggles.
I would recommend this book to others for sure!
