After rewatching 4.19 Jump the Shark, here's some thoughts on hunting, the making of personal connections, and what SPN is about.

As often happens with SPN, the characters themselves play out ruminations on these themes. I barely even have to write commentary.

DEAN What the hell was that? SAM What? DEAN 'Hunting is life. You can't have connections.' Dad gave you that exact same speech, remember? It was just before you ditched us for Stanford. You hated Dad for saying that stuff, and now you're quoting him? SAM Yeah, well, turns out Dad was right. DEAN Since when? SAM Since always. Dean, when I look at Adam, you know what I see? DEAN A normal kid. SAM No. Meat. Because the demons and monsters out there, that's all he is. I hated Dad for a long time. I did. But now I think I understand. So we didn't have a dog and a white picket fence. So what? Dad did right by us. He taught us how to protect ourselves. Adam deserves the same.

Notice how this severe idea that all they can have is this, nothing else, no friends (even friendships with other hunters is frowned upon, John was noticeably isolationist and distrustful and alienated his hunter friends who loved him, like Bobby), no love stories, nothing but the hunt, comes right from John's words.

Dean's shocked to hear it from Sam. In part because Sam always fought John about it and now Sam is quoting John, but in part it's because one of Dean's long arcs is rethinking a lot of John's ideas and finding his own identity outside of being John's shadow, or mimic.

In season 4, as Sam goes deeper and deeper under the influence of demon blood and Ruby's coaching, he goes colder and more ruthless and more remote, less like the Sam we know, and Dean notices more and more.

DEAN Listen to yourself, man. SAM You think I’m wrong? DEAN I think it's too late for us. This is our life. This is who we are, okay? And it's fine. I accept that. But with Adam, he's still got a chance, man. He can go to school. He could be a doctor.

Now it pulls back to Dean's resignation--but it's too late, the words are already out there with Dean questioning it. Too late for the audience not to notice.

While Dean doesn't expressly voice the idea that as hunters, maybe they don't have to sever all personal connections and turn off their hearts, it's self-evidently on Dean's mind. He doesn't see much hope for himself. That doesn't mean he isn't thinking it. And it's a very obvious part of the canon story for the run of the show.

As usual with SPN, two things can be true at once. Or there's a seed of truth but it's an incomplete truth. It is difficult to form and maintain connections in the hunting life, even with other hunters in the life. That doesn't mean Sam and Dean don't have any or can't have any. SPN self evidently shows they absolutely did, right along. Not just with each other.

Found family--the forging of connections, the human heart--is part of the life's blood of the story and always has been.

Dean in particular, throughout the series, has been adept at forming these connections and caring. He may at times try to shut himself away because it feels safer. The other people get less hurt. He'll get less hurt. But always he lets them in, he always cares.

It's easier with other hunters. People in the life with them, who understand that life.

John's narrow worldview of hunting, the ruthlessness, that's mirrored in Sam in this episode, and the idea that they can't have anyone else--isn't presented as the right answer.

Dean, as the series goes on, moves more and more into living the hunting life in a way that's by his own definitions, his own way, not his father's dictates. Despite the challenges of the hunting life. Dean makes his own rules.

We also see more instances of people in the hunting life who don't live by the extreme isolationist ideas of John Winchester. In fact, it turns out John was unusual and that hunters are sociable with each other, even if the life can be harsh and isolating. There's a hunting community. We only see glimpses of it early on because John kept Sam and Dean unusually isolated due to the circumstances of his particular quest, the YED.

But Sam and Dean are not their father. They forge their own path.

Most of all, SPN is a story about the connections that form between people--including the brothers, but not limited solely to the brothers.

SAM Dean...all this...it's not real. The dad Adam knew—he wasn't real. The things out there in the shadows—they are real. The world is coming to an end. That's real. Everything else is just part of the crap people tell themselves to get through the day.

You know what popped into my head when Sam said that? Dean's voice telling Cas in 4.22 -- You know what's real? People, families -- that's real.

Sam falls into a dark despairing mindset where all he can see is monsters and he is losing his heart. 4.19 ends on an ominous note

DEAN You know, I finally get why you and Dad butted heads so much. You two were practically the same person. SAM looks over. DEAN I mean, I worshipped the guy, you know? I dressed like him, I acted like him, I listen to the same music. But you were more like him than I will ever be. And I see that now. SAM I'll take that as a compliment. DEAN You take it any way you want.

Dean's coming to some realizations about his own hero-worship and imitation of his father, and seeing how he's not in fact, his father, no matter how much he fears it (or used to wish for it), and learning how much Sam is the one who is more like John than he is, despite Sam's lack of imitation and worship.

And without their friends who are like family, Sam and Dean aren't ever finding their way out of this thicket. They'd be lost, the world would be lost.

SPN is first and foremost about love.

I understand producers wanting a no risk lead and Jared earned that credibility and reputation. I don’t disagree with everything you said about Jared.

But I’m still surprised that Jensen didn’t earn the same reputation being co-lead and surprised he has not been given the opportunity to lead or co- lead again on another show. He seemed to have built a strong reputation with directors and producers and execs in the industry so shouldn’t he be on that same short list? I just don’t get what jensen is missing that jared or max theriot, Tom Ellis or Justin Hartley seems to have. What is that “x” factor?

The work he did on Smallville, Spn, Big Sky and The Boys, why didn’t that earn him points to have studio execs ensure he stays employed and part of a show?

Even in an industry that 97% are unemployed, Jensen seems to be a standout actor that gets constantly overlooked. Why?

Jensen was going to be a lead in Greg Bertlanti's unnamed project, but then Zaslav happened. But you ask a very good question on why the networks' bean counters don't have him on a Short List.

First, my wild guess is while Jensen's scene stealing talent improves the episode he's in, it's not the same as having screen presence to create a story, which is a must for lead actors to carry a show. For example, Jared's two-minute screentime in "The End" was not scene stealing, he became Lucifer for the sake of the story and left a memorable impact on the viewers' impression.

Think of every time spin-offs were created to capitalize on the scene stealers’ popularity, only for the scene stealers “special-ness” to evaporate into the ether when they have to carry the show by themselves. Rebel Wilson had her own tv show called Super Fun Night. but it failed because fans expected to see the whacky side kick persona, but instead got a Rebel Wilson playing a normal woman who is sometimes socially awkward.

Second, Jensen has a bit of a branding problem. If an actor doesn't understand what their brand is, then how do you expect casting directors to see it as well?

Actors make the mistake of trying to please every customer by changing who they are and not understanding that getting hired starts with choosing a brand for themselves and sticking to it. Say you own an Italian restaurant and I come in and say, “Oh, gosh! You know what? I want Mexican food.” And then you say, Okay, we’re cooking Mexican food now.” This is what a lot of actors do.

I used to joke that Jensen was like an active from the show The Dollhouse. Actives are neutral human husks until they're downloaded a personality to carry out a specific mission. You don't know what the true nature of an active unless you're willing to watch several episodes to look for clue crumbs to their innate personalities.

I tell young aspiring actors on how to discover their brand by pretending to write a profile for an online dating site. People usually don't write descriptive sentences but use adjectives: funny, athletic, intense, quirky, great smile, etc. To help them along, ask their trusted friends and family members to make a list of 5 qualities that pop into their heads. Then use the impression that appear over and over again because now you know that is you, your essence.

Too many times actors wait for an agent or manager to show up and tell them who they are. Or they ask me, “what do you think I am?". Actors have to decide for themselves and figure out their acting “singularity” -- that exclusive combination of attitudes and behaviors that make them an original even when they're typecasted. Some people describe Jensen as a version of Dean-lite, but that doesn't make Jensen an original then.

Third, Jensen is not a natural born-leader. Most of us aren't, but like acting, you can constantly work on the craft. Leaders are supposed to protect their team, but Jensen was still soft-bashing Jessica Alba twenty years later. I don't care if Jessicca was a bitch, a real man is not supposed to betray a woman’s confidence. He can still talk about the difficulties of working with Jessica while respecting the position she was in and up against. In contrast, Jared immediately defended his female co-stars when it was popular to dunk of them: the Olsen twins, Paris Hilton, and Snookie.

(Sam x Dean x Cas x Reader)

Chapter 2: “The Prophecy”

Should be a longer storyline. Has a bit of a mystery aspect to it. Specific chapters will be for certain romantic interests which I will put in the beginning of each chapter. This story is about (Y/N). Think of it as an entire season about YOU! Still developing a storyline but has lots of ideas. Will have to rewatch some seasons to get the lore right. Debating if I want to “spoil it” in the description of what the fanfic is about or leave it a mystery. I think I’m going to set the story around season 7-8 but of course I’m changing up some of the things that happen so it will be off script from the original spn show.

I’m going to switch to second person rather than third. Easier to write when it’s in (Y/N)’s POV.

Saving people, killings things, it’s the family business. During one of Sam and Dean’s hunts, they came across a small town in Oregon. Strange encounters happen is this town frequently, however there hasn’t been any killings or missing persons until now.The boys find their way to a veterinary hospital and find the cause of it…

The group arrives back to the hospital. The boys follow you to your office. “This town has many supernatural beings in it. None of them would hurt any of the people here. We all work together to make this community safe. All of them here have nothing to go back to. They either lost their homes, families, or they were turned forcefully. They all came to me for help. I provide them medical care if they were hurt, jobs, a new life. In exchange, they protect us.” You say.

“Was that woman last night also supernatural?” Dean asks.

“Whoever is killing these people specifically know that they are supernatural.” You sigh. “Maybe it’s a hunter?”

“Or another supernatural being.” Castiel replies, “I feel a presence here, something strong.”

“I feel it too. Ever since the night at the diner, the energy in this place has been off. Like somethings here…watching us.” You add on.

“That makes no sense though. Another monster killing monsters?” Sam says.

“We killed the bitch, Eve.” Dean sighs, “Sent her ass back to purgatory. None of her freak shows should be around anymore. Unless some flew under the radar.”

You gasp, “Eve?” You’ve met a woman named Eve before. Dark brown hair, green eyes wearing a white dress. She came to the diner one night, asking about this town- she never been here before. Her presence was off, making you nervous as you talked to her. She was scary, demented almost. She talked like a serial killer would. That was many months ago, however that encounter you remember like it was yesterday. Prior to Eve visiting your town, you were already involved with the supernatural. However, you’ve also been different since your encounter with Eve. Visions, actually feeling the presence of monsters, sometimes even seeing demons true faces. You’ve never dove into your new abilities, as it scared you. Are you a monster too?

THEN:

“Excuse me ma’am?” The woman places a hand on your shoulder. A shiver runs through your entire body when she touched you. It almost stung. You gasp out, confused from the sudden sensation. You turn around facing the unknown woman, setting (your fav drink) down onto the bar counter. You look at the woman, she wears a white dress with no shoes on, hair clearly not brushed for a while. “Are you okay?” You ask her.

“I’m Eve.” She says, doing a closed mouth smile staring at you.

“Uh yeah nice to meet you.” You say, creeped out by the situation. “How can I help you?” Looking around the bar, trying to see an escape out.

“I was told to come find you. I heard you help some of my children out.” Eve continues to smile, “I’m so thankful for you. Even monsters deserve someone to care for them.”

Your eyes widen, who is this?

“Don’t be scared, (Y/N). I’m not here to hurt you. I’m just trying to show you some gratitude.” Eve chuckles. “I’ll make sure that you’re protected. A war is coming.” Eve says. “Between everyone. Watch out for yourself.” Eve stands up to leave, touching your hand. “Besides, you’re one of my children now.”

NOW:

“You’ve spoke to Eve?” Cas asks, wide eyed.

“Holy shit.” Dean gasps. “You’re the person they were talking about in purgatory. They were saying that she’s our savior. That every monster is going to be back on Earth because of you.”

“What the hell?” Sam asks, incredibly confused.

“Hold on a second. I know what’s going on.” Cas speaks up. “Whoever is killing your friends, is actually out to get you. A lot of the monsters wanted to stay in purgatory.”

“So basically…whoever is this is coming to get me because I’m some sort of savior? That’s ridiculous.” You laugh nervously, “There is absolutely no way that I would ever let monsters out of purgatory.”

“This makes no sense.” Sam says looking at you with puppy dog eyes.

You clear your throat after making eye contact with him. He’s so handsome.

“Hold on a second. Everything is coming together now. We need to talk to Kevin. (Y/N) are you up for a road trip?”

“Who’s Kevin?” You ask, mind racing and twirling around.

“He’s a prophet of the lord.” Castiel says blankly.

“Ok first an angel, now a prophet…please don’t tell me God is real too?!” You exclaim, hands shaking.

The boys look over at each other with a shrug. “Yeah uh, his name is Chuck.” Sam chuckles.

You sigh, placing your hands down on the desk while looking down. Everything has just gotten so much more complicated.

Dean and Castiel watch outside while Sam stays with you as you pack up your things. He stood against the door frame, trying not to watch you too intently, however he couldn’t look away from you.

“I never thought I’d be in this situation.” You say, grabbing some clothes and stuffing them into a suitcase. Sam looks away as he sees you stuffing your panties into the side of it, barely fitting.

Sam gets out of his trance, “uh yeah. I mean how did you even get yourself into all this? Helping monsters?” Sam asks, looking at you intently, wanting to listen to you as you talked.

“Long story short, a shapeshifter saved me. Really bad car crash. Had to go to the hospital and they drove me there. When I saw them again, they were in another skin- ya know wanting to stay low radar. I started to look up the supernatural and I noticed it was all around me. Something about this town is special.” You say, looking at Sam.

“Not all monsters are evil.” Sam laughs, “I once fell in love with a werewolf…and a demon.” He scratches his head. “The demon was definitely evil.”

“Been there done that.” You laugh, recalling previous romantic encounters with supernatural beings. “How’d you get into hunting?”

“Well-“ Sam stops his sentence, hearing a scream from outside. “Pack your things now.” Sam runs over to the window and looks out. Dean and Castiel are fighting somebody.

“Shit.” You hiss out, hands shaking. You close you suitcase and grab your gun, cocking it back. Sam looks back at you and nods. The two of you run out to the Impala where Dean and Castiel are fighting. Your vision becomes blurry as you look at the faces of the people. Demons. Your head hurts and the back of your eyes sting, Sam grabs you by your shoulders and rushes you over to the car.

“Let’s go!” Dean yells, throwing himself into the driver seat, Sam and Castiel joining. You and Sam share the backseat as Cas is up front with Dean.

“What the hell was that?!” You scream out, “Are demons after me?”

“Maybe the demons are working for something.” Cas sighs looking back at you. “We need to get somewhere safe.”

“We’re heading to the bunker now. Kevin is meeting us there.” Dean says, driving faster.

The team stops at a motel for the night. Sam puts together demon warding around the motel while Cas takes care of the look out. “So it looks like there’s only one bed.” Dean looks at you and smirks. You laugh, slightly charmed by Dean’s character. His smile was enchanting. You would never admit this, but his smile made your panties wet. His voice, his body, his eyes are all too much for you to handle. You know you shouldn’t think these dirty thoughts about him but you can’t stop. Looking at his lips and then back at his eyes you smile, “Looks like you and Sam can share the bed and I’ll take the couch.” You place a hand on his shoulder and bite your lip, dragging your suitecase to the couch.

“I would rather sleep on the floor.” Sam comments, pushing hair out of his face.

“Oh please I’m a pleasure to sleep with.” Dean winks at you.

“I’m sure you hear that all the time.” You laugh and shake your head. Sam seemed almost angry watching Dean flirt with you.

“Please take the bed. Dean can take the floor and I can lay on the couch.” Sam says.

“That sounds perfect.” You smile at Sam, smirking at Dean as his mouth is agape. Sam and Dean’s eyes watch you as you go from one side of the room to the other. You felt like you were walking weird from the eyes staring. However it did put a strange sense of confidence in you.

That night you couldn’t sleep. Many things were on your mind. Demons, angels, purgatory, God…what will happen when you see this Kevin person. What is your role in all of this? Not to mention the three handsome, sexy men that are taking you on this journey that kind of seem into you. What will happen next?

Season 1 Overview

Season Rating: 8/10

This was a good season. I honestly miss when SPN was this grounded before the Angels entered. Season 1 has so many classic and good hunts and the best moments of brotherly bonding between the boys. And just innocence is bliss with those two.

Dean loves so much and so fiercely. Like, how does Sam and John not melt away from all that intensity? Especially Sam. Dean's love for Sam is pure devotion and adoration even if it goes beyond human comprehension to others. Literally Dean is the personification of love in all forms. Dean is terrifying when the ones he loves are in danger and there is no regret because he will do everything and anything for what he considers his. And it comes at the cost of himself. He will let people take advantage of him just to protect what's his. The fact that he stood up to John and put himself on Sam's side to show where his loyalty has begun to shift. (John straight up did abandon Dean and not just physically. Dude just wanted to have his Dad love him without his mistakes being thrown in front of his face or without the YED or Sam taking priority). I love this man even if he is an obsessive and possessive bastard.

Sam makes my heart hurt and bleed. This boy has been through so much and honestly I wish Sam never did return to the life. Season 1 Sam is so good and so pure (he still is in later seasons but there is something about season 1 Sam). The way he looks at a witness or family member of the victim in the eye and makes his voice gentle. The way he subtlety takes care of Dean. Putting his body in front of others to take the blow. I love him even if he doesn't believe he should be loved. It hurts how he is never the same after the encounter with the yellow eyed demon. He hides all that hurt, anger, and love behind a facade. I love how Sam looks at Dean differently with a whole new perspective. The way Sam looks at Dean just hurts; this boy loves his brother so much but also fears that he could lose Dean like he lost Jess. Sam during this season keeps his distance from Dean and the closer they get to the YED, the more he is losing himself to Dean's orbit. I'm sure Sam knew that once he let Dean in there was no turning back to 'normal.' The cross he bears would have killed him if he didn't have Dean to pull him from the edge. Dean is his constant, his compass, and his north star. The love the boys have for each other is unreal at times. Can't live with him, can't live without him (totally took that line from Hannibal. Speaks so loud of entangled lives.).

As much as I do not like John as a parent. He did what he thought was best at the time. I don't agree with the emotional and mental trauma he gave his boys but loss has a way twisting love into something unbearable. Unimaginable. And it is a torture to get up each day to imagine a world where it could be snatched away again. Bearing the weight of the cross is the life of a Winchester.

I am deliberately not talking about Mary yet because of the role she plays later on. I'm gonna be focusing on the Winchester men for most of the series.

Missouri is amazing and I love her. I wish we got to see more of her.

Top 5 Episodes:

Home (This deserves a post just for itself honestly. Mary's I'm sorry is just astounding considering future episodes. Also, John is once again a dick. Dean begging his father to come back is so freakin' sad but good television)

Dead in the Water (This episode just gives so much insight into Dean and how the trauma over his mom's death is so ingrained in every interaction he has with others that are in a similar situation or just vulnerable)

Nightmare (Gut-wrenching knowing what could have been with Dean and Sam if John had made a different decision and the events that would have happened had Sam powers was used for evil. This is also such a smooth transition into the bigger plot at hand and where the show really started picking up steam)

Faith (John is just an asshole period. You care so much about keeping them safe but you don't check up on your dying son. Sure John. Sam and Dean love each other more than life itself okay. Their love continues getting more and more possessive with each near death. Beautiful)

Something Wicked (Dean never was and was never gonna be a child. Had the weight of the world on his shoulders in more ways than one)

The Worst Episode:

Route 666 (This episode has literally always made me uncomfortable not gonna lie. Being a black woman has made me look at this episode in so many different ways and it just makes me upset for a lack of a better word. Considering that they don't revisit this type of thing again says something. That is a huge can worms that does not always end well.)

Question for you about baby Jack: do you think the same people that flatten Jack tend to also woobify Cas to the point of comical gentleness and stereotypical femininity? I was thinking about the implications for both autistic characters having their violence and harsh parts cut away to make them more palatable/adorable.

YES OH MY FUCKING GOD THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING IT.

It was definitely way worse around like S6-7 with Crazy!Cas than it is now, especially as a product of the show’s airing time and how queer men (ie Dean and Cas) were generally viewed during then; if you’ve been on the 2010’s internet you might remember all those mlm ship dynamics that were really just repackages of traditional marriage and gender roles: Alpha/Beta, Top/Bottom, Dom/Sub, etc.

/ Full disclosure that I was *not in these online circles during the 2010’s and I’m not any sort of gender studies expert, so anyone’s free to correct me if I get stuff wrong lol. /

But from what I’ve seen and what I know, Alphas, Tops, and Doms are typically very stereotypically masculine, carrying all the stereotypical traits like aggression and emotional unavailability, and filling in stereo-traditionally masculine roles like being protectors or providers. Vice versa, Betas/Bottoms/Subs were usually the extremely effeminate other half; they were more emotionally sensitive and weak, needed to be protected, and for the most part portrayed as looking physically androgynous or “soft.” Ergo, you have basically affixed these queer men to acting as The Man and The Woman, even though it’s two men.

Like I said, it’s definitely gone away for the most part, especially with the rise in actual gender studies and how gender expression is viewed, especially for men. I’ll still see it in some Destiel art here and there where Dean is this big gruff strong pants-wearer saving a blushing baby-faced dress-clad Cas, (cough wheeze diminuel but you didn’t hear that from me) but thankfully it isn’t thee most prevalent content made for Cas the way baby!jack is thee most prevalent content made for Jack, and there have been plenty of people over the years to come forward and correctly establish Cas as a way more dominant and capable guy than the ao3 fics would have you believe.

Same goes for Dean! He’s set up to be The Man, he likes violence and steak and guns and sleazy dive bar sex, but he’s a very emotionally sensitive man and has his own dips into femininity (Rhonda Hurley, cooking/baking, being Sam’s ‘mother,’ etc.) I’m actually of the opinion that SPN has some of the queerest masculinity ever , and again I’m not a gender studies student or expert by a long shot, but I do think there’s something to be said about how a show that is sort of built on a reversal and deconstruction of the nuclear family (ie Mary being a hunter and John being a normal man, Dean being Sam’s mother in their childhood) is so constantly regurgitated into those very roles by the fandom:

Sam is the “mom” of Jack’s 3 dads, Cas is the sensitive effeminate bean who needs big strong brawny man Dean to protect him, etc., and with Jack’s confirmation as non-binary so many ppl took to drawing them in mostly feminine fashion (which to me speaks a lot to how queer masculinity is treated but that’s for another post I think).

There’s also a lot to be said about how important mothers and motherhood are to SPN. Mary Winchester, Kelly Kline, Lily Sunder, Rowena Macleod, Jody Mills, Amelia Novak, I’m sure I could go on. Sam and Dean follow in the footsteps of their mother’s family as hunters. Castiel bonds with Jack through Kelly, and Jack takes after Kelly more than he does Lucifer (his grandma even points out that he sort of looks like her). I’m absolutely not saying SPN is this ultra feminist show, but when it tries it tries, and what it lays down is very much worth picking up.

you’ll have to forgive me for centering Jack on a Cas ask but I promise it’s not for nothing. like, the whole “twist” to Jack’s character isn’t just that he’s good or sweet; it’s also that he’s much more like his mother. Not only does he look like her, but he’s also very emotional; he’s sensitive, he’s intuitive, he’s deeply empathetic. and where most teen boys wanna be like their old man, he wants to be more like Kelly; even keeping her name as his own. of course he presents fairly masculinely, as do the other guys (unless we’re counting kitchen aprons as a feminine thing, which I only would with a grain of salt), but so much of his character is faceted in being like Kelly; being like his mother, being like a woman, and within the show’s framework that’s a celebrated thing!

I feel like I’m getting away from the original question so here’s some last thoughts to send out the door with you:

The issue with people upset by the prequel is that it’s basically a wound that keeps getting picked at every time another OG Cast member joins the show and Jared is still not there. I have to be honest, I don’t like Jensen as quite as much as I did before the prequel situation, BUT I still enjoy seeing him in stuff. Honestly, I don’t see how the finale made the situation any worse. No one truly thought Jared would be in it. Sam was the reason for Dean turning up again at the end. It could have been worse. I think people are allowed to be upset about the show, but Jensen didn’t newly kick their puppies.

I get that to some it feels like a slap or a throw away line about Sam, but it would have been worse if he wasn’t mentioned at all. Jensen could have asked Jared to make a cameo and maybe he said no. I don’t really think that happened, but I can’t, and don’t want to, waste any more energy being upset by a show , or the behind the scenes of a show, when I’ll never be able to know the full true story anyway.

I think Jensen truly has made a mistake in how he handled the not-really-a prequel, and I don’t think he came off looking great from a personal or professional POV. But, he’s also gotten more visibility with The Boys and an ABC show. So, it’s not like he’s destitute now or something. I don’t think he’s in any danger of not working.

People have lost the art of seeing nuance in people and situations. It’s all black and white. Jared is a monster. Jensen is the devil. Jared is my sweet meow meow. Jensen is perfect. Most people aren’t all good or all bad, and sometimes they can do crappy things while still being a decent person at their core.

I have no interest in defending the prequel generally, not least because I don't understand basically ... any ... of the decisions made in doing it. Like my reaction to nearly all of it has been, "But why, though?". So someone not liking Jensen anymore or liking him less than before over it? Eh, fair enough.

However, still going on about how Jensen is an evil backstabber trying to "erase" Sam literal years later when he sorted it out with Jared in a day is just ... something else. Including acting offended all anew because there really wasn't - IMO - an obviously better way to bring Sam into that finale without a Jared appearance he may not have wanted or been able to do for any number of reasons. As much as certain Jensen stans and hellers are trying to deny it, the underlying motivation for Dean was explicitly said to be protecting Sam. Like I see no real difference between acting like it's some pointed insult Dean went on an adventure without Sam and acting like it was some pointed insult Sam lived longer than Dean in the finale.

Likewise trying to insist all Jensen's other projects are laughable failures and he's clearly desperate for work because ... obviously nobody would choose to do more than one thing after doing the same show for 15 years! There are plenty of other actors both more and less successful than Jared and Jensen, so the obsession with continuing to pit them against each other when they clearly aren't following the same path anymore is just ... silly stan bullshit.

Yes, being the lead of a weekly show and an EP of that show and another is impressive on any network. Yes, The Boys is a buzzy streaming show and even a supporting role on ABC means new audience and networking opportunities. Sneering at either is ridiculous. Both of these guys could probably retire tomorrow if they wanted off SPN money, but lucky for us? They're still creating things for their fans to enjoy - but for stans, that's not good enough. One of them has to be crushing the other because their not!fave is an unforgivable terrible horrible no good very bad person that will get his just desserts if they just talk enough shit. 🙄

i don't really see all the threatened sexualized violence against dean in the same way as some people (which i mean, for me is good, because it's upsetting when it does read that way to me). this one is by far way more graphic and clear in intent and distressing. up there with hallucifer's constant mentioning of rape to sam.

well i do kind of love how quick dean is to adopt someone, this kind of emotional scene with kevin feels a little out of left field. like i can see the components that led to it, but kevin was out here being miserable and tortured by himself, dean gave some encouragement and drugs. but for dean just gettin all squirrely over ezekial saying he loves sam, now he's gonna have a heart to heart with kevin? i mean, in dean-land i guess talking mushy about family is acceptable, but the L word is not.

hi hades! i have a lot of strong opinions on a couple specific spn episodes, and id love to hear your thoughts!! i will not judge for your answers, because this show fucking sucks but also its the greatest piece of media ever so any opinion is correct objectively. ok anyways

what do you think about: faith (season 1 episode 13) , roadkill (season 2 episode 16) , and playthings (season 2 episode 11)?

i forgot how much i love this ep. I'm really into religious imagery in any media. dean on deaths door in the singlar reazon I'm gay /j. Sam's desperation to save Dean was always hinted at but this ep really does the "show not tell" thing right in a way most of the show doesn't. john not coming to help dean is one of the reasons i fucking hate the guy. Dean refuses to believe there is a God pre s4 because what god would put him though everything he's been though, i love him so much. the parrales between john and god with Dean's faith in an absent father.

2x11:

of the 3 eps this is my least favourite I'm going to be honest but i still love it so much. The twist is so good. the sibling devotion, they would rather be dead together then one of them leave (Sam and Dean prrallels). "what do you mean we look the type" is iconic (Dean vs people knowing he's bi before he does). Sam's break down, begging Dean to be the one who kills him is so well done.

2x16 (this will be looooong):

when the audience learns things after Sam and Dean/the narrative isn't chronological but we think it is, it makes the twists better. Sam wanting to ease Molly into the fact she is dead vs Dean wanting to tell her straight up bc in Sam's life knowing about monsters has only ever been a burden wear as Dean (Has not met Mary yet and doesn't know she knew about deamons) thinks, as John thinks, that he would still have his family if more people knew how to protect themselves. (i might be reading to much into that part but i am a lit & media student). then after the half way point Sam wants to tell her because she thinks David is dead and that is the worst thing in the world for her whereas Dean wants to comic to lying because telling someone the truth this far in would be hard and he cant have emotional convocations to save his life (see also; Gadreel arc).

This ep is so good for rewatching it and putting into context the things Dean says. The resolution of her letting go of the loop AAAAAA.

Every motw ep in spn has a little twist in it and using the different graves to fulfil the audience expectations only to pull the rug out from underneath with the "Molly is ALSO a ghost" .

The enphisis on the idea people are not born monsters especially in relation to Sam. "what ever it is, they just hold on too tight. caught in the same loop" (sam talking about the ghost but also him and Jessica (among others)) and "something happened to them. something they couldn't control" (sam with his whole being a deamon & yellow eyes' army in s2) bc Sam in the early seasons is insane and so full of self loathing.

The question of what happens to monsters after they die (and people) being uninsurable, beng afraid of death and the unknown feels like a nod towards s3 with dean waiting to die having no idea what will happen. "hope is kinda the whole point" them pre hell, and pre knowning just how fucked up every is AAAAAA

I literally am against the spn institution of “hunters” entirely by the way. Which, I understand hunting is the literal crux of the show so inb4 “lol” I am VERY aware. But that doesn’t change the fact that I very strongly feel that very concept of hunting in spn is rotten to its core. Other people have said this better than me but, when you take a step back, hunters are a loose covert assembly of redneck vigilantes with guns who know how the world REALLY works and get to be judge jury and executioner in deciding who counts as “people” and who counts as “things” while protecting white suburbia. Which is already so optically bad like I cannot emphasise enough that this as a narrative is so steeped in eugenics, xenophobia, and American nationalism whether that was intentionally thought about or otherwise. As much as white LGBTs like to think this show is about gender or gay people or “nothing” there is a reason it remained popular with white right-wingers throughout its run and it’s actually NOT because they were waiting to see bi!Dean go canon, it’s because nothing they saw challenged their beliefs. And that’s true in so many ways—the racism, the misogyny, the bigotry in general—but hunting is definitely one of them. Hunting is a power fantasy for these people.

And then—going back to the judge jury and executioner thing—it’s especially disturbing when 99% of the designated “things” are LITERALLY people with lives, many of whom don’t WANT to be monsters and/or have taken steps not to do harm, and would accept help if given. Yet hunters are shown indiscriminately murdering these people anyway, all the time. And in the mid-to-late seasons when characters began learning or devising cures for being a werewolf, a demon, a vampire, etc, for a moment I REALLY actually thought lol. I really thought oh they’re going to start helping and curing people now but no they literally just kept on killing, because THAT’S what hunting is really about isn’t it. I mean demonstrably. Hunters are so obsessed with killing the “things” that any human side that could be saved is just…. forfeit. I always think about that scene in s8, the backwards exorcism scene, where the demon is actively leaving the body of Linda Tran’s friend. This woman was about to be fine. But then salmondean actively put the demon BACK into this literal innocent possession victim’s body, JUST so they could kill the demon, and in so doing they murder Linda’s friend and neighbour—who she’d just been having a visit with, who’d probably come over to support her as she worried for her missing son—right in front of her. THAT was the priority, not saving the human person who was in distress but winning against the demon. They did literally just stab that lady and I can’t help but think how normalised it is that hunters just know how to behead people or sever their hands and limbs and can also literally inflict torture on them without batting an eye at the extremely fucked up level of violence they’re enacting. Even hunters who weren’t raised in it and were just normal people off the street before meeting salmondean. Like…. christ lol. And sure they’re “monsters” but I cannot stress enough that they literally all look like human beings. Could you cut off somebody’s hands and be normal afterward? Could you twist a knife in someone’s thigh and listen to them scream in agony and be normal afterward? Maybe I’m just a sensitive namby-pamby but I’m going to be real, I don’t think I could!

And salmondean in particular will literally befriend “good” monsters all the time and make subjective exceptions for them while never giving any other members of their kind the benefit of the doubt. Why does Garth get the opportunity to live his ethical werewolf life while other werewolves aren’t given the same opportunity? Why did Benny get to go off on his own and trusted to source blood in ways that don’t involve murder, but not that literal teenager from that episode in s15 whose parents begged Dean not to kill him and swore they’d make sure he never hurt anyone? Why does Claire get to be cured of lycanthropy but no one else, ever? Why do salmondean shut everything right down to save Jody from demonic possession, but couldn’t offer the same to Linda’s friend? I suppose Garth, Benny, Claire, Jody, and so many others were lucky enough that the Winchesters got to know them first. But isn’t it overwhelmingly clear by the end of the series that monsters HAVE the capacity to not do harm, to be reasonable, to live full and normal lives without hurting anyone, and furthermore to possibly be rescued/cured? Why was there never a shift in the narrative toward realising that? Why were the literal CURES for lycanthropy, for demonism, for vampirism, etc never integrated into the way salmondean approach those problems? If “saving people” is supposed to be the family business and all. It’s just inordinately fucked up to me lol. God forbid the Winchesters realise they were wrong about something I suppose.

The rub is that I can’t help but be fond of more than a few characters who are hunters like Eileen, Claire, Rufus, the Banes twins, Charlie, Mary, and sooo many others, because like I said hunting is unfortunately the lifeblood of the show and there are just so many otherwise interesting and charming characters who happen to be hunters because of course they are. Like the few other vocal anti spn hunting people I see are also anti every hunter character ever but for me that’s like.. idk. That’s like hating characters in a sitcom for being unrealistically witty. You know what I mean? Those characters are unrealistically witty because they’re in a sitcom. Likewise these characters are monster hunters because they’re in a monster hunting show, and yes the monster hunting sucks but the characters themselves are FAR from unsalvageable. I have my own revisions of hunter characters in my writing in which they are exorcists or paranormal investigators or demonologists and similar roles, if not a normal occupation depending on who it is (like if they’re a kid) and I have a great time with that. But even from a strictly a canon perspective though, most of them shouldn’t have even BEEN hunters, or didn’t have to be, and I don’t just mean the ones who were groomed and had no choice. Like for instance Claire of all people should NEVER have been given a gun and never should have been given the opportunity or encouragement to use killing things as an outlet. Eileen could have been 100% focused tracking down on the banshee without any need to engage in physical violence along the way (and like Claire probably deserved more support when she was younger so as to not end up channelling her grief into violence because that’s.. just really fucking sad). Jody and Donna are c*ps so there’s nothing to say particularly for their interest in holding dominion over people, but someone like Charlie as an ostensibly well adjusted person with a job and engagement in grassroots political activism and rich social and dating life should never of her own accord decided to just start murdering people as a hobby. So forth and so on like if it wasn’t so narratively normalised this shit would be insane! And it is!!!

Anyway between the clear base in eugenics and xenophobia and right-wing paranoia, and the sheer hypocrisy and thoughtless violence of the characters involved—no matter how heroic the show tried to making hunting look it never failed to leave just the absolute worst taste in my mouth. And I’m not sitting here like “I can’t take violence in media ever” that’s NOT what this is about. Violence in media is whatever, it can be entertaining and fun and meaningful but it’s the way spn depicts its violence, the way its violence is largely institutionalised serial killing that is rarely if ever questioned, that’s what bothers me. That’s why the whole concept of this show needs to be just completely worked over and taken almost entirely from scratch if there is any chance of “fixing” it, so that either the “monster hunting” looks and functions completely different, or the hunters within the narrative start to realise that maybe hunting IS wrong and there are other ways to go about solving these problems, to go about saving people, that DON’T involve unilateral executions. That’s just me though.

I’ve seen you mention wigglebox a couple times the last few days. Are they bad news? I thought they were team destiel.

Wigglebox got banned from my server for triangulating Jensen's colorado home. Used satellite, after trying to pretend to be investors trying to buy vacation homes didn't work, and other weird steps they did whilel I wasn't paying attention. I had made them a little hobby room to find if/where misha was during the finale and somewhere they completely lost the plot. They found mishas sisters places and like 3d toured their houses on realty and shit like it was SO out of fuckin pocket.

Wigglebox ran to a server named Andromeda, where they continued their weird stalky shit. And swore it was "to protect Jensen's address." they also insisted they found it accidentally. They accidentally looked for unique trees in his videos and accidentally swept the entire town they knew he was in by satellite to accidentally find him.

Per the linked post, Andromeda did some really shady shit during the spn finale script thing. POLOL was arranging a 25 dollar distribution with the vendor to release multiple copies anyone could buy and put us on the first issue list. But Andromeda found out we were doing that and had arranged some shady backdoor deal for a supposed second physical script for 400 (never happened) and kept trying to aggro us out of the 25 dollar deal because wigglebox REALLY wanted that script and attention.

And we were like. No??? so anyway. 2po was busy boning Kelios and Vinnie at that time, which he denies despite my pinned receipts. That whole server denies it. Why?

Because despite wigglebox swearing 2po wasn't trustable and that's why they needed THEIR script save or whatever they decided to team up, and Andromeda became Scripthunt. 2po got on the secondary distro list of the digitals and waved it around like LOOK WHAT I DID and we all rolled our eyes. OK whatever but we have the truth and guess what 2po you were wrong I was right. But meantime he boned V/K for 5K, which again, despite receipts, they deny.

But in came that group. And every big name fan that felt the end of their throne coming in the new show, every salty ass, bitter ass motherfucker lined up in there. It's not even like. Just one lane. Like. Hellers used to know better than to work with Jules, or Fangasm. Those were ones that had big warning signs stapled on them about being snakes and untrustable. (And I mean, her bad intel DID already bone 2po earlier about THE FAKE SCRIPT, because her Very Shiny Crew Badge.) Oh and the next wave there was people I banned from my server for trying to hijack admin permissions and delete shit in mine. Oh and the one bastard banned from my server for being a blatant sea lion troll that was annoying literally the entire server for months on end.

Like. Aborddeimpala? Makes great gifs. But hard anti. They're trying to play the moderate "OH NO WE CAN ALL JUST GET ALONG" like it's 2011 again. And like. no. the show was made to get rid of a bunch of those people.

Anyway, that's also where a lot of my targeted hate comes from, it's all directed out of that server. They refuse to back off even when proven wrong on the pilot or anything else, 2po just shifts new lies and narratives and pumps it through the scripthunt server while wringing money out of people to send their buddies to cons free, even with gold passes. "for autos, for charity" that see a sliver of it back. And idk why gold is included. silver autos are the same. Also why they attack me so hard for freely distributing scripts. It really fucks their game up.

Almost like. Wait for it. The entire origin of that server is shady snakes, clout seekers, stalkers, aggros, antis, bitters, and people with major agendas that are forming their final stand of relevance as the self proclaimed guardians of old scripts. That's ... basically who makes the place. Fangasm wants to stay relevant. Superwiki wants to stay relevant. And even with her badge and bajillion followers her traction isn't really even higher than mine. And that pisses them off. Fangasm doesn't have jared to uwu at now. Like. I could just go on and on and on breaking down how it's a toxic installation of fandom old BNFs that just don't want to go irrelevant in the new fandom.

And, again, another reason they attack my SPNWIN leaks so hard. Because they realized they got left in the past and their coffee runner Wiki has shittier, older access than what I found. I've seen so much discourse about the look of Dean in the finale of The Winchesters and why he looked that way, but I think the bigger picture is being missed here.

I'm speaking purely from the SPN character/story perspective here (and not discussing The Winchesters one way or the other or Jensen or Robbie or any of that in this post) but are we really surprised that at Dean deciding to go and find an AU version of his family that would not only be able to make their own choices but possibly get to have a happy ending?

Think of the million random choices that you make and yet, how each and every one of them brings you closer to your destiny. Do you know why that is? Because it's not random. It's not chance. Dean: "She's going to walk right into that nursery."

Michael: "Obviously. And you always knew that was going to play out one way or another."

So is it any wonder that Dean started knocking down dominoes? That he meddled? That he "gave it a nudge"? While he's also been trying to protect Sam who's still on his Earth? Or that Jack (his family/son and the new God) told him to finish what he'd started aka gave him his blessing by giving him the Colt and Dean's journal?

Nope.

Dean's always been fighting for his family.

And it makes perfect sense to have had Jack there (and if they had been able to make it happen, Cas, that line of "I was looking for my family" is multi-faceted, I see you Robbie; and no that's not looking through the Destiel lens, Cas is family regardless, Dean said it himself) along with Bobby (while Sam is mentioned) for this scene:

And that is what makes Dean's death in 15x20 so tragic (and why so many people were happy to see Dean in this context again). Dean broke free from the narrative (the expected ending for Dean - being a killer, dying violently on a hunt) and exercised his free will in 15x19 only to be sacrificed to it in 15x20 (aka losing his free will). Here, he is given some of that agency back while it also sets up The Winchesters crew to be free for their own narrative (if the show continues) and helps set Dean and Sam up to come back in the future to reclaim both their agencies and their free will. (just because Sam got out of hunting, got married, and had a kid doesn't mean he got his free will; like both J's have said, Sam was able to live his life for his brother but I guarantee if you gave Sam the choice 'aka his actual reward' between that life and having his brother back, we all know which choice he'd make; he lost everyone in his family to get that ending which was no reward for his own arc)

So regardless of whatever happened behind the scenes for the spinoff, whatever Jensen and Robbie had planned or didn't plan ahead of time, whatever blunders that occurred in the actual story of The Winchesters and the production/final airing of the show, THIS was very on brand for Dean.

Bonus:

Dean was no longer wearing the peacoat or looking so much like Jensen when he finally speaks to the AU John and Mary and all is revealed aka exposition, exposition, exposition.

He looked a lot more like Dean with slightly longer hair and some more scruff than we've ever seen Dean have before (plus this scene was obviously shot at a different time compared to the bus station scene). He was dressed like Dean; he finally sounded like Dean; he was Dean. So can we please stop talking about the peacoat and the turtleneck now? Or why Jensen had to keep those looks? It really overshadows the importance of the fact that once Dean was physically present in this episode, it not only complemented his SPN characterization but also his SPN story that sets him up for future SPN story telling. And regardless of where you stand with this show as a whole or Jensen as a celebrity/one face of two of the SPN brand, Robbie and Jensen did accomplish this tie-back to SPN Dean in a very beautiful way that doesn't in any way diminish the Dean we've come to know and love for 15+ years.

So I finally watched the first episode of the Winchesters

And I liked it. I liked it a lot.

I haven't been on here much nor on Twitter in forever because of reasons (writing do I even know her) so I haven't really been spoiled on... anything lol besides the insane notion that Jensen got rights and wanted to do a prequel like two seconds after the finale ended, so when I finally decided to watch it... I liked it. I wasn't really that surprised that I would like it... Jensen is in the seat and he loves Dean so much, and with Robbie being involved. I had more hope than doubt.

How I missed Dean's voice when I heard his narration. He will never leave me and it was so thrilling to hear it in a "new" context. Dean's never looked better. Meg, I already love her as Mary. She definitely captured Mary's spunk. And I love how Mary is just spilling things lol to John after they meet in the cemetery. A nice contrast to how Dean and Sam didn't. I like how they make John nuanced (I mean he is and although I really don't like John as a character at all in Spn) he is just that. I don't doubt that he thinks he loves his children but he has got serious issues and was abusive. You can still claim to love your children and hurt them. And 90% of Spn was related to daddy issues ; ) But it's refreshing to see a nice side to John, a more softer and vulnerable side. Ofc he has been affected by his time in Vietnam but he is still young and hopeful.

All the references to Dean and Supernatural <3 just makes my heart happy.

As they are sitting in the car and John has a flashback to Vietnam and watching his friend die. "No ghosts in the car", Mary says yet John is haunted by the ghosts of his past. And isn't that a thread that will keep being interwoven in the trauma tapestry that will be Dean and Sam's life. Lmao, I dk who Carlos is but I love him. He just showed up and killed it xD I was captivated as soon as he entered the screen. And he's bi! Bless.

When John asks what she wants to do with her life. Mary: Idk, I just wanna live long enough to find out. Ouch.

John's mom wanted to protect him and do anything for him when he was born and said to John one day when you have kids you'll understand. Already there is so much about missing fathers, John wondering where his dad is, and Mary thinking about Samuel and children searching for answers. Saving people hunting things.... Things are the same, things are the same, repeated and cyclical but not. A spiral that expands. I also hope that the imagery of Dean writing in the journal and narrating this story (in a sense his story) has wider implications. As a Chuck won truther and Heaven denier I really hope so. But time will tell. Onwards to episode 2!

Whenever Anons tell me that Jared fans are just as bad as AAs and hellers, I always ask for receipts.

The reason they won't ever be able to provide this (besides the ones Jai & co have been exposed as having faked to frame Jared fans...) is they don't exist (I know you know this lol, just making a general statement). The thing is, AA's are soooo beyond sensitive that they literally think saying we don't like Jensen's outfit at a con, or that he looks tired, or that he's had botox is "hate". You say anything even remotely critical about Jensen? You must hate him. They take such personal offense to things that are barely a slight to Jensen as hate.

Jared fans on the other hand, have had over 16 years of dealing with the hate and insults and biting their tongues. They have a much thicker skin. They are getting more assertive and pushing back more nowadays, but they still had to stay quiet for 15 years to keep the peace because, for some reason, it fell on them (much like it falls on Jared).

Btw this is exactly how and why I left the Jensen fandom completely. I was a Jensen leaning J2 fan when I joined the fandom. Problem was that I didn't immediately turn on blinders to Jensen's behavior when I joined (like a good little Jensen fan is expected to). So I made a mildly critical comment about him and was dogpiled. I was told I wasn't a real fan and that I actually hated him and was just pretending to like him. I was called some pretty gross stuff and told I wasn't wanted there. And from people I really didn't expect (at the time I didn't expect it at least). That's when I realized there weren't a lot of "safe spaces" in the Jensen fandom and it was exhausting trying to get news about him from sites where I also had to see (tagged) Jared hate and them attacking other fans like me. It was just easier to not bother anymore.

I actually saw a few posts recently from TB/GenV fans who were really annoyed that Jensen had a cameo in GenV because it's annoying how he takes over and all the gifsets and everything are all him. They didn't want him on the spinoff because that was a show mostly safe from his fans. It took them less than one season to piss off TB and GenV fans. Jared fans put up with it for 15 years.

Thank you for sharing your history. This completely jives with the many private convo I had with Dean/Jensen fans laminating the lack of safe space within their fandom that doesn't include Destiel and/or hating on Sam/Jared (X) but also expected to never discuss Dean or Jensen other than a perfect victim because AAs viewed themselves as perfect victims that the world must change and cater to them. The only advice I could provide them was to go to original posts by Sam girls (because at least they respect the show's canon) and look at who are reblogging or liking with Dean's avatar or his name.

Yeah I never understood why it fell on Sam girls to keep the fandom peace by appeasing the demented Sam haters. Just like it fell on Jared to protect Jensen from Destiel hellers' campaign to slander Jensen as a homophobe (*wave hello to MallorytoyourMickey aka Heidi aka High-D aka my buddy!*) but they won't protect Jared from slanderous lies spread by their own fandom on social media.

Which is why AAs, hellers, and even Kripke get the shock of their lives when Sam/Jared girls do strike back because they're like cats - chill and indifferent but have murder mittens and Freddy Kruger hands when rudely poked.

I’ve joked that Jared’s stans’ response to the Prequel debacle was “I’VE BEEN FREED!" They no longer have to support and defend Jensen especially now that SPN is over, then the Prequel debacle was the cherry on top because it gave them the ultimate permission to no longer do the geek social fallacy thing. And I like to think that Dean fans are also free from Ackles Army's death grip of the character now that they're moving on to The Boys fandom.

Speaking of which, I'm not surprised to hear TB/GenV fans are annoyed by the AAs. The soap opera and SPN fandom couldn't stand them, why would TB fandom be any different? As long as AAs view themselves as perfect victims, they don't believe they need to change their attitude.

Hi I’m very undereducated on sex (proudly working on fixing that though) and I definitely see what you mean about issues with consent and health in fic but what do you mean about positivity? Like is that in terms of like purity culture and shame or is there something else we should be looking for to know we’re reading a sex positive fic?

Hey buddy! Kudos on trying to educate yourself. There's no shame in not knowing more and wanting to learn.

Sex positivity primarily means focusing on consent, pleasure, education, and safety; actively fighting shame about sex in ourselves and in our society; and being inclusive of queer people and POC. It encompasses so much more than that, like fighting for legislation that protects bodily autonomy and supporting institutions that provide services for survivors of sexual violence. It is very intersectional for many reasons. For example, BIPOC are disproportionately affected by things like involuntary sterilizations, STIs, sexual violence, and poor health care. Making our communities, culture, legislation, and everyday lives more sex positive is liberating for all.

One of the things that makes finding sex positive fic in the Supernatural fandom so difficult is that, despite being created by a Jew, the show is just very WASP-y. White anglo-saxon protestant ideals about sex are extremely shameful, and rely on control and ignorance.

In Supernatural, there is a lot of casual sexual harassment that is never addressed, and women and people of color have very little autonomy.

The broadly accepted fanon interpretation of Dean is that he is a deeply repressed and ashamed queer person. I don't find this to be unlikely, considering his age (Gen Xer), location (American Midwest), and community (hunters, primarily middle-aged rural white men), but it does make for some very sex negative fanfic.

To get to your actual question, there is very little explicit consent in Supernatural fanfiction, and I think this is largely due to what I mentioned above in the last few paragraphs. Good, respectful, healthy sex relies on constant communication, consent beforehand and consent during. Sex in SPN fic is also usually very unsafe. STIs are spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Something I see far too often in SPN fic is that the people having sex don't have a condom, so they forgo anal sex and just have oral sex. The notion that you can't get STIs through oral sex is misinformed and dangerous. Another thing I see often in SPN fic is the use of the word "clean" to mean "doesn't have STIs". Having an STI does not make a person dirty.

While I hope that people don't rely on Supernatural fanfiction, of all things, to educate them about sex, how we talk about sex matters. The art we make about sex matters. So, I encourage everyone to include more consent and safer sex practices, and less shame, in their SPN fic.
