Mizu’s Womanhood
I keep thinking about how well Mizu’s story was written. A huge factor that makes me love the show is how they show Mizu’s abilities during fight scenes, but don’t forget that she is a woman. On the surface level people could see these fights as amazing action sequences, but there’s so much story being told at the same time. And that’s what makes an action sequence truly great (Warrior HBO is another example of amazing storytelling through fight choreography. Ah Toy's fight against Cleaver and Hammer comes to mind right away when comparing).
We start off by seeing Mizu tear through young men in Shindo Dojo. Her skills are showcased as agile, flexible, fast, and based on her ability to use her body in ways that are fluid. She’s tested as soon as Taigen enters the picture. He’s physically stronger than her, shown in a multitude of ways throughout the action sequence from him throwing her to him pushing her down to her knee, but she’s still more skilled. She uses his weight against him, which she will do in every fight during the series. Mizu beats him due to her agility and speed. On top of that, it is the first time we see a man assume victory be his downfall. And it will happen on multiple occasions.
Tumblr media
Episode 2 comes around and Mizu is tested again, but this time by 4 opponents and one who is significantly larger and more trained (Chiaki). Mizu's smart, evaluates her situation, and changes her surroundings by jumping down onto the cliffside. It doesn’t put her at an advantage, but at least she’s not at a severe disadvantage. It allows her to fight mainly one-on-one which changes her circumstances. But it doesn’t win the fight for her. What does is her resilience, adaptability, and skill once more. Once again, in the fight, the man opens himself up for a counter during the finishing blow. Chiaki ran forward, his guard completely down because he was sure he’d won like Taigen.
Tumblr media
Episode 5 is where we get to see Mizu struggle due to overwhelming numbers. She’s forced into a corner, but the weapon that saves her is the Naginata. Naginatajutsu has been most associated with female samurai. The added range was a huge advantage and allowed women to protect their homes when their samurai husband were gone. I love that Mizu's first time using the weapon extensively was in a situation where it wasn’t her own life on the line, but also the women of the brothel. It showcased the connection between the Naginata, women, and protection in a beautiful way. Also, her using it during these circumstance felt like she was reclaiming the weapon from the traumas she had experienced during Mikio's betrayal. The parallels of Mizu not just being demonized for her blue eyes, but also for being a woman was stunning in this episode.
Tumblr media
In Episode 6, we see Mizu almost lose to the big club man (Okiyama). We see her completely overpowered by the size difference. Okiyama can pick her up easily, throw her, and she’s unable to parry him properly. For the first time we truly see the difference between a man’s strength and hers (which will also be present against Fowler). The fact that both Fowler and him pick her up, and attempt to crush her with their bare arms is so powerful and as a woman, it’s a striking parallel to the real world and the powers of men. She was going to lose the fight if not for her last ditch effort, that also could have resulted in her own death with the bomb. It shows her willingness to sacrifice everything for the quest she's on. And at the end of the episode, Fowler manhandles her completely. It doesn’t matter that she’s injured, it doesn’t matter that he has a gun. What matters in that scene is that he takes pleasure in using his power. He destroys the weak and he lords over them. He uses women as sex slaves. He cares for no one but himself. He is the perfect representation of what Mizu as a woman has to fight against.
Tumblr media
There’s no fight scene in Episode 7 of note, but what is important is Mizu’s acceptance of her appearance, whether it be the blue eyes and sharp features, or her womanly features, all of them had once been sources of pain for her. The heart sutra scene is stunning and one of my favorites of the entire series (even if her little toesies were most likely being burned to be so close to the makeshift forge).
Tumblr media
And finally Episode 8. We get to see her fight Fowler. I have multiple gripes with the structure of this fight, but it still represents Mizu’s womanhood in a way that continues the flow of the series. Mizu has to use everything to take down Fowler and even when she does she is still overpowered by him. He mirrors Okiyama, easily lifting her and using his strength over her instead of skill. And the line “your bones break like a woman’s” shows the societal norm that men associate with women being weaker, fragile, and unable to withstand what men can. It's fitting of the time period, but also current day too.
Tumblr media
But hubris is the man’s downfall in this series because as soon as he lets his guard down, she takes her chance. She breaks free, her rage, need for vengeance, and essential reason for being at this point drive her to beat him. The single line “Oh my dear, that’s your white half showing,” doesn’t just target her being mixed race, but also being a woman. Fowler doesn’t let up there though, he calls her eyes pretty. And not just because they’re blue, but because they’re of a woman’s. He brings up unwanted daughters and digs the knife deeper. And these last lines from Fowler represent everything that Mizu has been combating, everything that has been driving her. There’s so much to her character. The writing in this series shows how multiple compounding factors contribute to a person's drive. And in this instance, it shows how being a woman and half-white has lead to Mizu’s self-hatred and it’s beautiful in such a destructive way.

So after staring into the middle distance for a couple days I'm ready to start discussing some theories I have before the season finale destroys us. They are all very wide-ranging in absurdity but I'll start with the one that I think has the most substance and therefore I think is most likely to happen. Also, I haven’t caught up with the tag yet so if someone already posted these theories, sorry!
So here is Theory #1, known otherwise as,
Why (I think) I know how Laszlo is going to unfuck Guillermo
The solution, I believe, was stated at the very end of The Roast by Laszlo himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FIRST THOUGHT, BEST THOUGHT
Laszlo has spent weeks deeply committed to solving a problem. He's wasted precious time trying to outthink his first (and probably best) solution – and I'm not just talking about his book sorting. Neither was Laszlo, not entirely at least. I actually do think he was focused at least a little bit on his books because that's kind of what happens when you're stuck on a problem. Your brain wanders to other much less taxing ordeals. Usually, as you solve that smaller problem, you find the solution to the thing you really want to solve.
So what was Laszlo’s first idea?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All along Laszlo had the answer but Guillermo told him that he didn't think it would work, so Laszlo just didn't pursue it further. (We don't even know if Laszlo knows the circumstances of the test and why it didn't work. Just that Guillermo didn't approve that idea.) So then Laszlo wasted valuable time and energy trying to ~Science~ this problem instead of using his true best skill that was showcased in episode one of the season: his charm. His powers of persuasion (the classical art of bullshitting, as it were) is his true super power. (Sadly, it’s not science. He doesn't really have the patience for science tbh).
But, no, rly, he should bullshit his way thru this. That's what he does best. He can outthink Nandor easily. (well….maybe. with the time spent on his experiments, Nandor could have the advantage of several weeks, if not months, to figure things out beforehand, as dense as he is) He should concoct a bullshit so impenetrable that it unfucks Guillermo from Derek and refucks him to Nandor.
Further foreshadowing of this you ask?
Tumblr media
(this whole season is dedicated to ‘plans’ it’s crazy how much A Plan pops up. maybe i’ll dedicate a separate post to collecting them all)
But alas! The test that The Baron did proved this wouldn’t work, right!?
Tumblr media
Well here's some free additional theories to how Laszlo could solve that hiccup:
1. Laszlo figures out (and solves) the reason why The Baron/Neighbor test didn't work in the first place.
There could be any number of factors of why The Baron's neighbor blew up. It could be that The Baron is all that more powerful than the average vampire and so his bite gives an extraordinary fill of uh...vampire-ness? and Derek, being so young and weak, doesn't do much at all. Maybe it has something to do with The Sire. If The Baron was turned by the first being ever affected by vampirism, then maybe that vampirism is slowly depleted the further down the line you go. Derek is probably very far removed from The Sire which means he cannot transfer much of that affliction onwards. Nandor, if he was turned by The Baron (one removed from The Sire) or someone similar, explains how he is so powerful, hopefully tho he wouldn’t have too much power to possibly overwhelm Guillermo's half-a-virgin body (and yes I did like how kinky that sounded when I wrote it). It doesn't really matter the exact reason as long as Laszlo can convince Guillermo to try it and he has a relatively decent chance of surviving it. (convincing Guillermo to go thru with this plan overall is probably going to be the most trouble actually. you don't easily forget a guy exploding in your face)
2. Something to do with the experiments. (or the Nadja’s bait-and-switch tactic she used to catch The Baron/Guillermo from The Roast)
I have a larger theory on the experiments and why I think there's still one in the house, but that's for later. During The Roast, Nandor is pretty convinced that the mutant Guillermo is the real one (despite one pretty big glaring error: he has no glasses. none of the experiments need glasses...), Laszlo might have been testing this theory by having The Baron bring his body to Nandor in the first place in order to see how convinced Nandor would be by it. This might be enough for Laszlo to try to use a duplicate of Guillermo for Nandor to bite. The duplicate will not explode (probably?) due to only being a hybrid of Guillermo's blood and an animal…or something(one) else pretending to be Guillermo… (and if it does, maybe Laszlo plans to shoo Nandor out of the line of sight in order for him not to see. And then you get the angst and drama of Guillermo literally using a scapegoat to take his 'sin' despite his reluctance to hurt innocent creatures)
But will the fake Guillermo actually convince Nandor? It's hard to say, and I love that threat of Nandor realizing that it's not the true Guillermo he bit and feeling even more betrayed. Maybe Laszlo concocts a whole ambiance to the event in order to sell the lie. It has to be special right?
So there's dim lights and candles and (fake) Guillermo is laid out in Nandor's coffin and there's this whole presentation element to it that was left out of Guillermo's turn with Derek. It's more like the fantasy that Guillermo probably always had of being turned by Nandor. It plays out like a romantic love scene. But Guillermo is asleep or has his eyes closed and won't talk or maybe only makes small noises and Nandor's very upset abt this. Laszlo is probably hovering too and Nandor doesn't like that either but Laszlo insists he must be there and it's now it's all awkward and wrong, kind of like how Guillermo felt before he was bit by Derek. (now it’s like Nandor is the bull cucking Laszlo in front of him) Nandor goes thru with it and bites Guillermo and is rushed by Laszlo so he doesn't get to drink or drink too much of his blood and there's fumbling with trying to get his own blood into Guillermo's unresponsive mouth.
Or maybe Nandor finds out because Guillermo's blood is disgusting and he either knows or had hoped it would be good tasting*. or that Guillermo just lays there and there's no reciprocation of desire. But maybe he just doesn't find out and once it's over he expects to be able to lay with Guillermo or otherwise be there for his turning but Laszlo quickly rushes him out of his own room and closes the door behind him.
So now Nandor feels all the same despondency that Guillermo had felt with his turn with Derek. Like this big special moment he's built up for years was a complete dud. Like he missed out on something truly magical and he doesn't know why. And Guillermo will feel like shit too, for tricking Nandor. Laszlo isn't happy either. But it worked and they all just have to live with it. Meanwhile this act that was meant to make Nandor's and Guillermo's bond stronger, only serves to create even greater distance between them.
Re*: evidence that Guillermo's blood might taste 'different':
Tumblr media
3. ANYWAYS. that was theory two. lets talk about theory 3.
WITCHES.
I actually think there's good reason Laszlo has divorced Science and is now going to have an affair with Magic. It's exactly when Nadja says 'has this hex turned me into an uggo' that Laszlo comes to life and exclaims ‘that's it!’. If science wasn't the solution, maybe magic is. It's not like they don't know some witches, or that, at least to a degree, witches actually have some power. (specifically the power to look, vaguely, like someone else.) I'm not certain of the specifics but there's a chance Laszlo could be turning to magic to solve his problems. This would also bring Nadja's storyline more relevant and in focus for the season. The thing I like the most about this theory? Episode 9 describes being invited to a manor owned by someone named Morrigan. Morrigan is a Celtic goddess of war and fate that was probably the inspiration for Arthurian legendary sorceress, Morgan le Fay. (Laszlo's name may also be connected to Arthurian legend, Lancelot. but that probably doesn't mean anything.)
So! That's my three extra theories attached to this one big theory that Laszlo is going to go 'back to the beginning' and use his first thought to solve this. Go with his gut. His first solution was his best solution, all along.
…He simply needs to convince Nandor to turn Guillermo.
The, uh, details of this plan may be a lot more complicated than it suggests.

ROTTMNT Charater Fighting Style Analysis - Part 5: April O'Neil
Tumblr media
Oh, would you look at that? It's finally here! After three weeks, multiple rewatches, and several pages of notes and drafts in Word, I've made it to the final individual character* analysis.
This is a continuation of my series of posts analyzing each of the Turtles' (+April's) fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses in a fight, and how Rise uses that to highlight different aspects of their character. I highly encourage you to read the first one (Leo's) before hopping into this one for full context. There is a bit of a TL;DR at the end.
[Part 1: Leo] [Part 2: Raph] [Part 3: Mikey] [Part 4: Donnie]
Last, but ABSOLUTELY not least, is our Girl with the Plan and President of the Dorky Pals for Life Club…
April O'Neil: The Scout/Jack-of-all-Trades:
My analysis for this one might be a bit of a surprise for some, considering a few people have said they already have an idea of how I might categorize her. Going into my analysis, I too thought I had a pretty solid understanding of the way she fought, but by the end, I found that there was so much I missed - I ended up coming to a conclusion that was quite different than what I was expecting.
Fighting Style:
Dynamic and Precise
April is a very strong, energetic, and multifaceted fighter, which allows her to hold her own in battle, even when she's the only human present. She is a primarily offensive fighter with a diverse skill set that she is able to utilize in almost any situation. With her bat, April demonstrates a surprising amount of physical strength as her weapon requires a significant amount of force in order to be truly effective. She also has gymnastic skills that make her a notably agile fighter, giving her an advantage in both speed and maneuverability. She approaches battles with great enthusiasm, amplifying her overall movement and attacks.
Tumblr media
In this sense, April's fighting style is rather similar to Mikey's, as they are both quick, nimble fighters that excel offensively while implementing acrobatic movements to deliver quick attacks and make up for a defensive disadvantage. However, she distinguishes herself with a weapon that is very different from Mikey's and by having a larger, more practical set of skills that require unique tactics. Instead of mystic powers, she has a wider range of general skills that end up being incredibly beneficial in battle. She has a fluid fighting style that undergoes the most changes in the show as she learns new techniques from both her allies and enemies and incorporates them into her method of fighting.
Despite the energy she brings into battle, April is surprisingly meticulous in the way she approaches her fights. Instead of running wildly into battle, she is actually quite deliberate in when and how she attacks. April doesn't blindly attack enemies and only goes in for a strike at opportune times, aiming to deliver a few quick, accurate hits that efficiently damage her foe. This gives April the ability to participate and contribute to fights as a human without putting herself at unnecessary risk or becoming a liability.
Tumblr media
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
Jack-of-all-Trades
April is the generalist of the team. While the other members of the family tend to stick to one type of technique or a particular style of fighting, April has knowledge and experience in multiple fighting techniques, skills, and occupations that make her an adaptable fighter. This makes her perfect for "rounding out the team" by providing some extra strength and making up for any weaknesses that may be present in the team. Because of her dynamic fight style and ever-growing list of skills and techniques, April occasionally fights with an amalgamation of the other turtles' roles and fighting styles. April is seen acting as the Wild Card by keeping enemies on their toes with fast movements and nontraditional weapons; a Bruiser/Pummeler (a slugger, if you will) by delivering multiple hits in quick succession with her bat; or even a Striker by going for those accurate, singular attacks. If there's a role that needs to be filled in a fight, odds are April can deliver.
Tumblr media
April also has the largest set of practical skills on the team, thanks to the experience she has gained from her numerous (former) jobs. In situations where a very specific set of expertise is needed, April can usually provide that to some degree. This makes her a versatile asset to the team in ways that even Mikey can't be, particularly with battles set in urban or unconventional environments. One of April's greatest strengths as a combatant is her ability to use the environment around her to her advantage - that comes with her dynamic fighting styles. Granted, that applies to all members of her family, but because of the considerable variety of knowledge and experience at her disposal, she has more options when it comes to utilizing her surroundings. Some of her skills are incredibly hyperspecific, however, usually limiting which ones she can use at any given point.
Tumblr media
The Scout
April also acts as the team's Scout [No - I'm not just saying this because she happens to have a bat]. She is the one that usually goes ahead of the others before, or at the start of, a battle and gathers information about the enemy and their movements. This typically involves April disguising herself in some way and infiltrating the enemy from within, but there are times when more conventional stealth is needed. She is small and quick enough to sneak past enemies and through different environments, giving her multiple options for her investigations. April also provides information to the team during battles, as she can still apply her "stealth" abilities and use her agility to move around the battlefield quickly and mostly unnoticed.
Tumblr media
April's precise fighting style also plays into the Scout role as she can quickly get in and out of fights when needed, which is beneficial both when she is by herself or in a group. A scout needs to be fast, precise, and agile to make up for their lack of defensive capabilities - this fits April's fighting style and abilities to a T. The Scout role plays directly to her strengths as a combatant and decreases her risk of harm as a human in chaotic mutant battles.
Utility:
As a fighter, April is particularly well suited for individual, one-on-one battles. Her primary weapon, a bat, is a generally short-range melee weapon that requires a good amount of accuracy and is limited by its small reach and defensive capabilities. Her fighting style incorporates this by focusing on accurate attacks and accurate timing while utilizing dynamic movements to increase her optimal attack range. When combined with her established proficiency with her bat and adaptive creativity, April becomes a formidable opponent in fights with a small number of opponents. Even without her bat, however, April's ingenuity, agility, and large skill set make her an extraordinarily capable fighter one-on-one.
Tumblr media
However, due to her overall lack of mystic powers, limited defensive strength, and the natural restrictions of her weapon, April can struggle in fights with more enemies. Not only is she at greater risk of harm with so many moving parts, but it also doesn't work as well with April's fighting style - she simply doesn't have the range or attacks needed to affect a wider area. That isn't to say she isn't able to handle herself in group fights (she very clearly can), but it just isn't her strong suit.
Some of April's numerous abilities that give her the title of "Jack-of-all-Trades" can be incredibly situational and require a specific set of circumstances and environmental conditions in order to be utilized. While she still has these skills to use to her advantage, not all of them can be used at one time, although at least one of her skills will probably be applicable in any scenario.
Tumblr media
How it Plays Into Her Character:
As a member of a family full of mutants and magic, it is only natural for April to want to contribute to the team by participating in fights - but as the only human in a family of mutants, this also means she is left at a bit of a physical disadvantage in comparison to the others. Most people would likely feel a sense of inferiority or weakness in the face of such a disparity, but not April O'Neil. One of April's greatest strengths as a fighter and as a character is her persistence and clever thinking, which is seen in her fighting style. Instead of getting discouraged at her apparent disadvantage to her brothers, April persisted and found ways to use her own natural abilities to her advantage. She may be physically weaker than the turtles, but by implementing a fighting style that relies on precise attacks and her agility, she is less likely to get hurt while still doing a significant amount of damage to the enemy. Her dynamic and precise fighting style embodies April's ability to adapt and persevere even when things are against her.
Tumblr media
April's role as a Scout is indicative of April's intelligence while forcing her to dial back on her impulsive tendencies. It is essential for anyone acting as a scout in a battle to be intelligent and clever to be able to acquire information and make observations that are actually useful to the team. April demonstrates her intelligence and quick wit by always assisting the team with the knowledge that is essential to their success, and constantly observing different elements of a battle, even when not formally acting as a scout. The Scout role does, however, expose a potential challenge for April when it comes to impulsive actions. As a whole, I wouldn't say that April is an impulsive character - she is certainly the most level-headed of the bunch - but as the oldest sister to a bunch of teenage boys, it is only natural for some of that to wear off on her from time to time. April is usually pretty tactical about when and how she goes into fights, but there are a few times in the show where she can rush right in if she's especially passionate about something. In order to fully be effective in her fighting style and roles, she has to be sure to not give into those impulses and keep a steady head throughout the fight.
Tumblr media
In a Team Fight:
In a coordinated group attack, April is best suited for an initial or follow-up attack. Her speed and agility mean she can get in and out of a fight quickly and her precise fighting style creates a perfect combination to provide a solid initial set of strikes to weaken or disorient an enemy. This doesn't provide much in the way of setting up the next attack, but it could be followed up with an equally quick attack from someone else. Her fighting style also lends itself to a quick follow-up attack and is particularly effective if the opponent is disoriented prior to her attack. April's quick movements and attacks can add to the enemy's confusion and deal significant damage at the same time.
However, April does not do well in a position that requires her to set up for the following attack, nor is she fit to go last in a team attack and deliver a final strike. Since her attack style implements a small number of precise hits to damage an enemy, she does much better at targeting specific weak points on an opponent rather than worrying about how someone else could further add to her attack. Her physical limitations and lack of mystic powers also restrict her ability to deliver the last attack (at least, not by herself). While it doesn't mean she isn't a strong fighter, being the final attacker in a team attack doesn't work well with her physical strengths and the advantages she has with her fighting style.
Tumblr media
~-~-~-~
[TL;DR: April is a Dynamic and Precise fighter with very fluid and adaptable fighting techniques and a tactical and accurate approach to her attacks. Her large, diverse set of practical skills and flexible fighting methods give her an advantage by acting as a Jack-of-all-Trades. April also operates as the team's Scout by using her intelligence and precise fighting style to gather information and make quick, opportunistic attacks on an enemy. These all demonstrate her tenacity, perseverance, and creativity by presenting it through her adaptive fighting methods and approaches to battle.]
I have a feeling this one may be a bit divisive... I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with here, but it took some serious self-persuasion to get past the titles and categorizations I already established for her in my brain prior to my analysis - and I think that will be the case with a few others. Hopefully I’ve managed to make my case well enough.
Thank you so much for all your support on this little "series." You have no idea how much it means to me to have people actually read these, much less receive such positive responses to them. I'm thrilled that many of you seem to enjoy reading these posts almost as much as I enjoyed making them. DON'T WORRY - THIS IS NOT MY LAST POST FOR THIS SERIES. I have one more kind of "Wrap-up" post planned after this as an overview of their collective team dynamics, miscellaneous thoughts/"corrections", a brief explanation as to what inspired me to dedicate hours of my life writing these silly things, and (if you guys are interested) a small breakdown of my thought process and approach towards my analyses. I don't have a fully planned time to release that, but know it will be coming at some point in the near future.

Clanmew terms to describe weight and height? Like the heavy in Heavystep or the tall in Tallstar?
I'm going to give you a detailed breakdown of words for describing attributes, including pulling from the Lexicon, to try and have a good single-post guide for this.
Note: In an attempt to add some better grammatical rules for attributes going foward, for a larger quest to make Clanmew better for some "conversational" topics, some words are going to get edited in the Lexicon as well
Basic Attributes
MOST attributes in Clanmew are inherently "neutral" until modified. "Way" is simply Height, with "Wayeeb," "Wayrra," and "Waymor" meaning Short, Medium, and Tall.
Generic attributes CAN be used in names, and by default refer to the 'obvious' nature of a characteristic.
For example; Shortwhisker of SkyClan was Kas-hussk, Length-Whisker. Because his short whiskers were defining, Kas in this situation obviously means "short." If his whiskers suddenly grew in twice as long, Kas-hussk would suddenly mean "Longwhisker," as that would also be the obvious trait.
(For Talltail I'm kind of thinking of making his Clanmew name Swashmew, Tailkit, and then eventually earning a name on his return that means "Story-Traveled" in reference to how long he spent away from WindClan. "Talltale" in English, which could have been "Wanderstar" or even "Talestar")
Height; the vertical axis of an object = Way
Length; the horizontal axis of an object = Kas
Weight; the heaviness of an object = Bai
Age; amount of time a thing has existed = Kiq
Wealth; the amount of stuff that a thing has = Poh (Note: NOT money-related. Refers to how much prey you've caught in an outing, how rich a patch of territory is, how full your bowl is, etc. I cannot think of a better English translation.)
Threat Level; a Clan Culture value = Myyrn
Experience/Skill/Aptitude; how good you are at a thing = Pya
Favor; for mortals, liking things = Min (Do you want to say "I love you?" Go read this for examples.)
Gloss; the shininess of fur, has a double meaning as StarClan's favor in you = Shaw
Soft; 'Squishiness,' comfort, pliability = Afi (NOT a fur texture. Soft of texture is "wuff")
Hard = Bobur
Happy; contentedness, joy, satisfaction = Bia
Rank; political power, authority, social standing = Gorrl
Temperature; the normal, non-freezing and non-burning range of heat. For fevers, average weather, objects you touch casually = Waa
Suffixes; attached to the end of attributes to modify them
Little of a physical attribute = -eeb
Medium of a physical attribute = -rra
Large of a physical attribute = -mor
Has not collected much of the attribute; scarce, poor = -qef
Has collected a reasonable amount of the attribute; expected, normal, "hitting your numbers" = -qal
Has collected a whole lot of the attribute; rich, -ful = -qew
"-ness," the most basic suffix for turning any word into an noun to be used in questions and declarations = -wang.
There's a significant difference between eeb/rra/mor (ERM) and qef/qal/qew (QQQ), listen carefully.
The ERM set is about physical, innate attributes. Long legs, natural talent, harmless species. A cat who contains Waymor is a NATURALLY tall cat, it is their build. To say that a cat contains "pyaeeb" is like saying that they are always going to be bad at a thing, where you could comfort a clanmate with "pyaqef" to say that they don't have experience yet.
The QQQ set is about acquired traits. A cat who contains Baiqew may be one who might be carrying a lot of weight but could set the objects down. You might hear "Pohqal" for a cat who has caught as much prey as they need to on this particular outing. "Wayqew" is height that a cat has because they are standing on something.
(and wayqal implies that squilf has stepped up onto some sort of box or rock to be eye-level with the person she is talking to <3)
It's a small difference, but a meaningful one.

switchblade | masters of the air | taster
Coming here is functionally a grounding. That much is clear. The B-17 is a metal coffin that, by some aeronautical miracle, has managed to attain the gift of flight despite everything – poor defensive coverage, inadequate range, weak nose structure – that suggests this should not have been the case.
Olivia Mariner looks up at the B-17s sitting obliviously in the hangar at Thorpe Abbotts and thinks about what it might be like to shoot one of them down.
It would be an easy target. B-17s are not intended for aerial combat, and their one singular, solitary tactic is apparently to fly continuously in formation even when being shot at, because performing evasive manoeuvres runs the risk of disrupting the formation and causing collisions. Mariner imagines herself in her P-51, armed with its two fifty-calibre nose-mounted machine guns and four thirty-calibre wing-mounted machine guns, the only conceivable match for the Luftwaffe’s fire-spitting death machines that she isn’t afraid of as long as she’s facing them down in her Mustang. She imagines herself as the enemy. How would she approach a Flying Fortress? How would she bounce it? It wouldn’t be difficult at all: she could outmanoeuvre a B-17 without breaking a sweat. She would move into its blind spot and break into a steep spiralling dive downward so the B-17’s Brownings – for which they do not carry sufficient supplies of ammunition that could last them over a minute of continuous gunfire – wouldn’t be able to maintain a target lock on her. Then she would pull her aircraft back up, sharply, abruptly, until she’s below the body of the B-17, where she has the perfect vantage point to shoot out the unprotected fuel tanks within the wings.
That’s all well and good, a strategic manufacturing error that could be fixed, without a doubt, throughout the Flying Fortress’s production run that will last until the end of the war. Until Mariner remembers that, in this scenario, she will no longer be the one in the fighter plane but rather the one getting burned to a crisp in the B-17 because the fuel tanks just exploded and eviscerated the fuselage before anyone even had the chance to bail.
Perhaps the situation would be less grim if she knew how to fly a B-17 at all.
How did she even end up here?
Fighter squadrons come before bombers. That is the standard principle of air warfare. Once air supremacy has been gained by more aerodynamic single-engined high-speed fighters – P-51s and P-40s and P-47s that require only a light touch to manoeuvre, the deft hand of a skilled pilot who knows their plane and its operational mechanisms as though it is an extension of their own body – that is when larger, long-range bombers come in to deliver their payloads of air-to-ground weaponry to strategic targets. Bombing raids cannot take place without the prerequisite of air supremacy as bombers, sufficiently implied in their name itself, are not themselves intended for aerial combat against enemy aircraft.
And therein lies the problem. To Mariner, it’s difficult to see the B-17 as little more than a large and defenceless flying flak-magnet. A warplane that cannot roll on its longitudinal axis, cannot pull into vertical climbs, cannot dive or loop or fly at steep angles or allow for aerobatics without disembowelling itself, is hardly a warplane at all, at least not in the sense that she defines what should constitute a warplane. She understands that heavy bombers are an entirely different grade of aircraft, one that requires a different series of skills that are no less demanding than that of a fighter pilot, one requiring the ability to work with a team, first and foremost, the idea of which she finds herself thinking of with a pit of tension in her lower stomach. She understands that this is necessary because a war cannot be won with fighter planes alone, as much as she would like to think that is a possibility. What she does not understand, however, is why she has been presently chosen to fly a bomber.
So that was what she told her squadron leader, word for word, when she first learned of her reassignment.
“I understand your concerns, Mariner,” was what her squadron leader, Tillotson – a thirty-something USAAF officer who had been in the Eagle Squadrons with her, primarily because he knew her father for some reason or another that she never bothered to find out – said in answer. “But it is an operational need. The 100th has a shortage of pilots and they can’t continue flying missions at the volume they’re expected to if this shortage continues. We’ve reached a point in the war where our strategic focus must shift toward bombing campaigns. You have the relevant flying experience that qualifies you for retraining and reassignment toward where the war effort needs you most. Repurposing you as a bomber pilot now, of all times, makes every sense to me.”
Mariner blinked in disbelief. She didn’t like the suffix makes every sense to me, the finality of it, the implication that this was now a non-negotiable and non-retractable decision already made by her superiors, a decision that centrally concerned her yet one she had no part in making.
“Sir,” she began, “heavy bombers require escort fighters. Our squadron can do that. I’ve been asking for it in my sitreps since we first started strategic bombing. Wouldn’t it be more practical to keep me here and deploy us as escorts as I recommended, rather than retrain me from the ground up?”
“It is something we thought of, yes. But having enough pilots is crucial for whether the 100th can remain operational. If they can’t fly missions, you’ll have nothing to escort. Now is when we need our best and brightest to step up and fill in for the shortage of pilots capable of flying those missions that a complete novice coming out of flight school cannot.”
Best and brightest. The sudden compliment took Mariner by surprise, filled her momentarily with a glow of pride radiating from that little hollow at the base of her throat that warms up every time she receives some kind of validation. She cleared her throat self-consciously.
“Who else is getting reassigned? Smith? Heppell?”
Tillotson paused briefly. “We decided that you alone would be the best fit for the transition.”
Apart from the fact that it made no sense to single out one member of a squadron for a reassignment, there was almost no chance that she would be the best natural candidate. Mariner thought for a brief half-second that she would not pick herself to be reassigned to a bomber unit if she had the choice of other members in her squadron, members who would indubitably be more patient and longsuffering when it came to flying a heavy bomber, both of which she was not.
And then the realisation dawned on her, like the awful downward shudder of the blade of a guillotine. The previous glow of pride disappeared, replaced immediately by a simmering indignant rage that bubbles to the surface. “You’re bumping me out of the squadron!”
“Mariner—”
“That is exactly what you’re doing! Best and brightest my ass. You think I don’t fit in with the rest of your squad because of how I fly. Because you think I’m going to collide with my wingman every time when I so much as move my aircraft a centimetre to the left. Because that one time on patrol, when I was guarding your tail, I said your call sign when I wasn’t supposed to and broke formation, and that was because I saw three 109s above us on our six about to pulverise us and you hadn’t even seen them yet!”
Another thought came to her then, one that sent a fresh wave of anger coursing through her as though her dam of restraint – which admittedly was never a particularly robust structure – had broken. She was aware that she was losing her temper. She was aware that she was not to lose her temper around her superior officers under any circumstances. But that awareness was purely academic now, and at any rate it was disappearing quickly out the window.
“You can’t trust me in a single-seat fighter, is that it? You think I need a whole team of people behind me to make sure I don’t fuck up?”
It was less of a question and more of an accusation, and the very idea of it was absurd to Mariner. Saying it out loud only cemented its absurdity. Who in their right mind wouldn’t trust her in a fighter? She’d been in combat with Bf 109s since before Pearl Harbour and America’s formal entrance into the war. It was indubitable fact – one that seemed to be obvious to all except Tillotson and the others responsible for making this ill-conceived decision – that she was one of the most competent fighters in the squadron. Three years of flight experience with the No. 71. Seven aircraft destroyed. An ace by the end of the Battle of Britain. Such accomplishments were not coincidental. Mariner knew it. And unless you have some kind of malfunction, she thought bitterly, then you don’t transfer a pilot with those accomplishments under their belt out of your squadron as petty punishment. You’re supposed to keep them and hold onto them and deploy them on high-risk missions that accurately reflect the value of their skill set!
“Lieutenant Mariner,” Tillotson said, raising his voice now, in a way that brooked no argument. “I was hoping to save both of us from this conversation and let you accept your reassignment amicably, but it appears you’re determined to have this conversation, in which case I’ll be clear with you. You’re not a good fit in my squadron. You take unnecessary and ill-calculated risks that endanger not only yourself but also your wingmen and the outcome of the mission as a whole. On our last sortie, you completely disregarded formation and went off on that solo chase of yours after an enemy fighter, leaving your leader’s tail vulnerable to attack. And what is most alarming is the fact that this incident is not an isolated one, nor is it the first time you’ve flagrantly disregarded orders to do what you think is clever. We’re lucky nothing catastrophic has happened so far, but luck won't always be on our side, as you seem to believe it will always be on yours.”
He paused for a moment, his brow low and creased, his eyes fixed upon Mariner’s, as though examining her closely for her reaction.
“You’re rough on the stick, Olivia, but I’ve seen potential in you. Even so, talent alone won’t cut it and your consistent lack of discipline is compromising the overall effectiveness of our unit. I’ve seen pilots like you – good pilots capable of exercising mathematically precise command of their aircraft – shot down for less. You should know better than anyone that, up in the air, in a Mustang, split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. I need to be able to trust every member of my squadron to make those decisions, and make them correctly. And right now I can’t trust you to do that.”
There was a long agonising pause. Mariner’s expression remained unchanged, though she thought her stomach had vanished. She was suddenly conscious of how she was standing up very straight with her body held up at her sternum, and of the tachycardic rhythm of her heartbeat that for a brief moment she irrationally feared Tillotson might hear it.
It is a rare thing for words from a superior officer to cut so deep, though Mariner doesn’t like the idea that any words might be able to cut her at all. She has gone through flight training like everyone else and made her share of mistakes in every plane she has learned to pilot – Mustangs and Warhawks and Thunderbolts alike – and she has grown accustomed to the stony visages of instructors, their crushing expectations and the feeling where you irrevocably begin to question your own strength of character and purpose and worth whenever you fail to meet them. Yet she came through with top marks and everyone who has ever been disappointed by her has eventually been proven wrong. She would have thought that, by now, her skin has already thickened into something comparable to steel.
Yet, when she stood there in Tillotson’s office, being told that she could not be trusted to fly, Mariner felt utterly reduced. It was a humiliating kind of reduction. And humiliation made her angry, a unique cornered anger of its own kind that seethed all the way down to the bone.
Tillotson seemed to sense this. His voice softened slightly, becoming conciliatory, in the way only a victor acutely aware of his own impending victory could afford to do.
“This is not an exile, Mariner,” was what he said. “This is when you prove yourself. Maybe a change of perspective will help you understand the gravity of your actions and teach you some restraint. It is an opportunity. Don’t squander it.”
“It’s an opportunity?” Mariner’s jaw clenched. She knew now the reassignment was inevitable. She knew that the decision had indeed been made on her behalf without any of her input and she had, somehow, been played so well that she happened to be the last to figure it out. And if she was to start learning restraint on her reassignment, she supposed that she didn’t need to begin now. “It’s not a goddamn opportunity, and you know it. It’s punishing me for something I haven’t even done. Yeah, I went after that enemy fighter on my own. And you know what? I shot it down. I saw an opportunity and I seized it instead of waiting around for the 109s to regroup. Isn’t that what we’re trained to do? Adapt, improvise, overcome, all that?”
“There’s a stark difference between adapting, improvising and overcoming, Olivia, and putting the rest of your squadron at risk,” Tillotson replied firmly. And then, what really pissed her off: “You have to learn, one way or another, that the USAAF is an ecosystem where every element, down to the individual fighter, must depend upon command structure to function. It’s not a place for young Turks wanting to prove themselves and be a hero. Don’t worry. I’'ll make sure no one else takes up the Switchblade call sign when you’re gone.”
At this Mariner felt her blunt fingernails digging pink crescent moons into her palms. That was an extraordinarily low blow. It was not merely the complete misconstruction of her character – as a willful contrarian who thinks only of their own glory, apparently – that incensed her, but beyond that it was the fear that thrummed at a deeper sub-cellular level, a fear that this may be how she was truly seen by her superiors, how her efforts and achievements were being interpreted by those who disregard her as little more than an ordinary pilot who likes to think of herself as extraordinary. And the placement of the command structure meant that she could not rectify this mistake or defend herself against this obvious besmirching of her name and reputation without risking a dishonourable discharge from the military altogether.
So she did what she does best.
“Fine. You want discipline?” she said, her voice lowering into something hard and cold and stubborn. “I can do that. I’ll get into a bomber. I’ll drop a few bombs. But mark my words, sir, you’re making a mistake. Both you and I know exactly what I can do and what I should be out there doing, whether I’m in a Mustang or a tin can with wings. And when the time comes, when you need someone with enough balls to fly through hell and back under twenty-millimetres and flak, don’t be surprised when you come back to me because there’s no one else up for the job.”
She did not resign herself to waiting around for Tillotson’s reaction. Instead she saluted him sharply in a way that suggested an obvious grudge, pivoted on her heels and marched out of the room. She refused to even attempt to try and understand Tillotson’s reasoning as there could be no possible reasoning on God’s green earth that could justify this decision. Perhaps an attempt at figuring out his reasoning, however unfounded it may be, could come later, when she has spent enough aimless months with the 100th to supposedly have learned her lesson and earned a place back on her former fighter squadron. But the embers of rage were still very much scorching hot in her hands, hissing and spitting and burning wherever they touched her skin, and she refused out of pure spite to put them down, so she carried them with her all the way until she reached Norfolk, England.

Dear @catwingsathena,
Thank you for sending in an application to be matched with one of our service dragons! Your needs and preferences suggest that a slightly older dragon would probably suit you best. A juvenile is easier to train for specific tasks, but a little less predictable and would also be more work for you. Right now we have two dragons in our training program that might be a good match:
Philly, a very steady, flightless dragon that weighs about 5 kilo's. She ended up in our shelter because her wings are no longer able to support her and we started training her when we noticed how clever and social she is. We are confident that she will be able to give all the assistance you need, including guarding the showers while you are in it. But while she is also very cuddly, she's not really playful. She's rather serious for a dragon and tends to ignore other animals.
Bagel, a rare crossbreed between what we guess must have been a common pocket dragon and a freshwater dragon. She adores water and is very curious and affectionate, also towards other pets. None of your requirements should give her any trouble, but we do think you might need to give her her own bracelet to hoard for herself, or she might try to keep yours.
If either or both of those sound like a good fit to you, we'd love for you to come to the shelter some day soon to meet them. It's a cliché, but the dragon really does pick the owner, and it's hard to tell what personality suits you best until you're face to shout with them!
~ The Domestic Dragon Trust
PS. We have enclosed your application form below.
Service Dragon Application Form
Size: I would prefer a dragon on the larger side of the pocket dragon size range—large enough to cuddle properly and be a pleasant weight on my lap (if I’m sitting up) or chest (if I’m lying down), but not so heavy that walking around with them in a cross-body messenger bag would be cumbersome or hard on my shoulders. Maybe roughly rabbit-sized?
Skills: the primary supports I would need from a service dragon are self-care reminders and light assistance, primarily with meals, meds, and showers. I struggle enough with showers that it might be useful for me to have a dragon who enjoys playing in water enough to want to get in the shower with me, but if that’s not possible, hanging out just outside the curtain and making reassuring sounds would be more than satisfactory. It would also be very helpful if my dragon could bring my migraine rescue meds when needed, encourage me to get up and stretch my legs if I’ve been at the computer too long, and/or pester me into eating and drinking water if I haven’t in a while. I don’t have nightmares terribly often (maybe twice a month on average, these days), but when I do I would greatly appreciate it if my dragon could wake me up. I’d also appreciate if they could grab my medical ID bracelet if I leave it on my bed or try to leave the house without it.
Personality: as I mentioned before, a cuddly dragon is a must. An ability to tolerate or even enjoyment of water would be helpful, for both shower purposes and because I live in an area with a lot of rain and like to go walking in it. Still, while playfulness is nice and an interest in finding things would be very helpful, I think I would do better with a fairly calm, laid-back dragon. My sleep schedule is very erratic (not because of when I go to bed or get up, just insomnia), so I would need a dragon who won’t be bothered by me being awake for hours in the middle of the night and getting up or turning on lights—the ability to nap when an opportunity presents itself might help, and I’d like it if they could sometimes hang out on my bed with me while I’m writing or resting (preferably without interfering with my typing too much).
Living Situation: I go back and forth between two houses approximately every other week. Both houses have at least one cat, and one of the houses also has a small dog (who is never allowed in my room, where I spend most of my indoor time). I spend long stretches of time walking around the block or going on the swingset at the park, and I love being outside in the rain. I also spend a lot of time sitting in my bed—it’s where I do most of my reading and writing, as well as resting. I have a part-time job to which I probably couldn’t bring my dragon for a variety of reasons, but my shifts are 4 hours, so I won’t be away too long.

tagged by @chaotic-neutral-knitter and @spirker, thank you 💕
post the first line of your most recent ten fics, and see if there are any patterns.

The sun rises to break the night—a symphony of purple, beautiful and ethereal. Five Birthdays and a Funeral, the fic i'm perhaps most proud of. i actually did a thing in this where i chained the first and last line segments of the chapters and then included them all within the last one
It took Ed a little while to register why he had woken up. Out the gates, a sort of (smut) intermission for Throw away the oars while i finish the sequel
Ed went there to talk. They don't talk. Losing count, a S2E6 missing scene fic
Warmth. warmth, good food, orgasms, microfic written after S2E3 aired
Ed has been in many hotels over the years, for purposes ranging from business to pleasure and with standards ranging from luxury to wouldn’t-touch-the-bedspread. Five-star review, grindr hook-ups with feelings idk
i don't know if i see a pattern but looking back at this, i can't believe these span half a year and a whole second season + cancellation + renewal campaign + end of the renewal campaign 🫠 time is fake lmao
i went back and re-read a lot of comments recently and it gave me so much joy and love for this fandom. i do wish i had the spoons to answer them all, but just know they're immensely appreciated 💕

Year 1 Moon 7
Firesong negotiates with another clan
Tumblr media
The nearby clans had been too preoccupied with their war to notice their new neighbors by the shore, but SilverClan knew that would eventually change. As the SilverClan patrols ranged wider, they eventually ran into a new clan named HushClan while hunting near the Twolegplace to the West. The two patrols faced off against each other, but the larger SilverClan patrol was surprised when the other cats decided not to attack. Instead they revealed that they had been aware of SilverClan for a couple of moons, and had agreed that they seemed rational enough to work out a border agreement without need for a war. HushClan in fact had a similar value to SilverClan - let the larger cans fight between each other and try live peacefully in the pockets of territory they aren't paying attention to. The patrol took this information back to camp, where they agreed on a meeting with their neighbors. Firesong was nominated as the speaker, and on the next full moon she met with HushClan's leader, Partridgestar*. The red and silver cat immediately got to business, suggesting that SilverClan leave the Twolegplace and beyond to HushClan. Firesong conferred with the other representatives of SilverClan, and they agreed on the condition that the beach in front of the Twolegplace be neutral ground. Partridgestar seemed to mull it over, before agreeing to the terms. The clan had navigated their first encounter with another clan well, and came out of it with decent relations. *Partridgestar is an entirely fabricated character lmao. I've used the clangen sprite generator to create their sprite. HushClan is really one of the clans in the game though!
An ex-housecat comes looking for Breeze
Tumblr media
The winds are getting colder and the sea more rough. One day, the wind brings the scent of a stranger to camp - shortly after a stranger has charmed his way past the camp guard to speak to Dancingstar. The cat is Dmitri, an ex-housecat who left his twoleg at the start of the year. He's been living near the twoleg place when he found out that his fellow wanderer Breeze had left the area to join a clan. Dmitri knew that Breeze wouldn't have joined a clan easily and any group he stuck with must be good. Dmitri's easygoing nature hid an underlying worry about the upcoming winter, and he petitioned to join the clan. Breeze vouched for him, and Dancingstar agreed to let him join.
The clan gets to know the new cat
Tumblr media
Dancingstar takes Sprucepaw, Breeze, and Weedwillow on patrol. He wants to focus on what skills Breeze has that he can share with the clan, and asks him to show Weedwillow any tricks he knows in a mock battle. The two toms have a heated scrap, and both learn new skills and get to know their opponent better. Sprucepaw is awed by Breeze! He's never met a new cat since he was tiny, and he was very impressed.

Cranes turn, he's so baby girl coded <3
Tumblr media
Design rant time !!
Jonathan Cranes backstory is the one where he lived with his great grandma and she terrorised the shit out of him, especially with birds. And he got bullied and all that too, and it all just kinda fucked him up. Eventually he ended up killing both his bullies and his grandmother, the events leading him to pursue psychology and study fear. Also he's from the south, I still dunno if that's ever been canon but I know it's a popular headcanon if it isn't. So yeah he's southern, although he tries to hide his accent (don't ask what state I don't know enough about American States to pick one).
So blah blah blah he moved to Gotham after university and he eventually became a Professor of Psychology, he then used his position to run experiments on "consenting" university students (he tried to argue they agreed to it, he failed to argue his point but he still made an attempt). Over time he developed his fear toxin (he didn't actually use fear toxin for a good few years) and developed the Scarecrow persona. During this time he also got fired from the University but managed to become a psychologist at Arkham Asylum which gave him ample opportunity to run his experiments. Eventually he expanded his experiments, using fear gas on a crowd at a currently undecided event to test it at a larger scale and a diverse range of people instead of just uni students and the mentally ill. However he got caught by Batman and became a patient at Arkham which obviously also got him fired. Nevertheless he continued his experiments although over the years a variety of factors have resulted in the Scarecrow persona almost becoming a second personality (he doesn't have DID just to clarify, this bit is more of a made up disorder on my part that's unique to him because his fear gas/toxin had a big part in its development, he's not immune to his fear stuff and whilst he tries to limit his exposure it's just not possible to avoid it). The best way to describe it is basically as Scarecrow his personality becomes harsher and under extreme circumstances and/or over exposure to his fear gas/toxin, he'll often disassociate and act more violent, mostly just attempting to do what he thinks is best in order to protect himself, it's similar in a way to a fight or flight response type thing I guess. It's basically just his brain attempting to protect him, it's really hard to explain what I'm thinking.
As Jonathan Crane he's reclusive with very few personal connections to other people. he can be cold and lacks empathy (not totally he still experiences a little), and often doesn't display much emotion, despite this he's still somewhat considerate of others. He's skilled in psychology and chemistry, and lacks fighting skills. He's persuasive and his knowledge of psychology makes it quite easy for him to get in other's heads. As Scarecrow very little is different, although he appears to completely lack empathy, has more violent impulses, and is generally more sadistic. Depending on the circumstances he'll either be more controlled and calm (when he chooses to slip into the persona), or he'll be impulsive and reckless, his actions reminiscent of someone doing what they can to survive (when he's forced into the persona, or further into them intended). Anyway at Arkham he gets the straight jacket treatment, also the mask whatever, he's never actually bitten someone they're just scared of him, he doesn't always wear the mask. When he's brought into Arkham he will often be more violent before calming down after a few days, usually they put him in solitary confinement for the first few days.
He began his crimes in his 30s and continues them into his 50s so he's like middle aged. He's aroace, also he's autistic, why? Because I say so, his special interest is fear lmao. Anyway he's close friends with Jervis Tetch and friends with Poison Ivy, friendly with Riddler (they have their issues), other than that he's mostly neutral with the other rogues. Also a note his body is covered in scars from the whole Grandmother terrorizing him with birds thing, the worst of the scars are on his arms and his back. Also he knits as a hobby, I just think that suits him. One more thing, he's 6'6" I just thought y'all should know that, he's stupidly tall. And that is all I have to say about him.

Fire Vermillions' Favorite Weapons and Fight Style
Writing down my thoughts for @thoughtfullyrainynightmare's Fire Vermillion Month~!
..........
Mereoleona Vermillion
If Mereoleona were to use a weapon, she's opt for brass knuckles.
They're straightforward but impactful weapons, just like her personality.
Ranged combat has its place but she's about close, melee fighting. She's not gonna be a coward and fight from a distance.
Mereo puts her whole being into a fight and if that means exposing her body to harm, so be it.
She wants to look her opponent in the eye while she overpowers them. Or if she's on the losing side, she wants them to see her stand defiant to the end.
Very rarely does Mereoleona feel haunted by a guilt of seeing her enemy so close.
Because most of them do fight earnestly which makes the battle something honorable.
Not only that, but up close fighting means that she has to fighting a little more on her feet, adapting on the fly to keep pace.
And she likes the challenge of not knowing how the opponent right in front of her eyes might surprise her.
It's about being bold and adaptable and upfront every step of the way when it comes to Mereo on the battlefield.
...
Fuegoleon Vermillion
If Fuegoleon were to use a weapon, I imagine him with a crossbow.
Something a little heavier and more mechanical than a typical longbow but not quite a gun/early rifle.
Fuegoleon is a careful and methodical fighter, he takes time to observe his opponent and search for an opening.
Because crossbows have a slower fire-rate, it means Fuegoleon has a few extra seconds to consider his target, that or he has to really consider where his limited shots will go.
Fuegoleon can go ranged or melee with his fighting style but I think he prefers ranged.
Not out of cowardice or a fear of looking his enemy in the eye, far from that.
But rather, if he fights from a range, he's more likely to be observing a larger battlefield.
He doesn't do one-on-one melees as much as his sister in hopes that his firepower can be useful to as wide a scope as possible
Fuegoleon seems like he'd want to see as much of the battlefield as possible, direct his soldiers where they need to be, and make decisive attacks of his own where need be.
Sometimes, there will be an opponent that requires more attention from him, at which point he'd make it a close range battle and trust that his knights can manage themselves until he can resume giving orders.
But more often than not, Fuegoleon's aim reaches far and wide.
...
Leopold Vermillion
Grenades, this boy would wield grenades and other explosives as his weapon of choice.
Leopold is less refined than Fuegoleon and only slightly less in-your-face than Mereoleona, in terms of personality and fighting style. He's unique from his siblings, that's all that it is.
I think explosives like grenades match Leopold and his fighting style well.
They're, well, explosive like Leopold but as with any weapon, they take skill to wield properly.
Leopold can use grenades that go off very quickly for more sudden attacks. Or he can plant timed grenades for later payoff attacks, similar to how he endured and drew out the battle to draw the massive rune circle.
Leopold's fighting style is similar to Fuegoleon in that it's a strategy that takes time. But it's different in that instead of observing and waiting for an opening, Leopold is able to endure and create an opening for himself.
It's like a fusion of Fuegoleon's patient fighting style and Mereoleona's actively adapting style.
It's a little less refined/reckless, but Leopold it's a fighting style that isn't simply running headlong into situations.
Leopold is still learning and growing, but he's taking the lessons of his elder siblings and turning them into his own strength.

In your story A Fair Exchange why did you say Vhagar was their only defender? They still have Sunfyre and Helaena's dragon, or did something happen to them?
Hi, thank you for your question - I think I'll explain it in general with the dragons and how dangerous they are, so I'll just rank them based on my reading on them and I'm only including dragons that have/had riders. This is based on the start of the war and just my opinion. Feel free to add your own.
Ranking the Targaryen Dragons
Tumblr media
Tier 1: Vhagar, Meleys, Caraxes, Vermithor
All of the Tier 1 Dragons could easily defeat any of the lower tier dragons in battle. If any of these dragons face each other 1:1, any one has the power and skill to kill the other, no matter the pair up.
Vhagar is incredibly large and has a lot of experience. Meleys is the fastest dragon alive and at the size where she is formidable. Caraxes is ferocious and "likes to burn" and Vermithor is also a very experienced, very large, very fierce dragon.
Tier 2: Dreamfyre and Silverwing
Dreamfyre and Silverwing are both very large dragons, though not as large as the Tier 1. Both aren't that ferocious and more docile. While Dreamfyre is the most important dragon, and larger, Silverwing is faster. If these two are fighting, its a fifty/fifty.
Tier 3: Seasmoke and Syrax
Seasmoke and Syrax are about the same age. Seasmoke has seen war, but Syrax has the better and stronger bond with their rider at this point and that matters in battle too. I would favour Seasmoke over Syrax slightly, but both easily defeat the ones in the lower tiers.
(I will put Tyseleys (my OC dragon) in Tier 3 because he is older, larger and more ferocious than Seasmoke and Syrax, but more inexperienced with a younger more inexperienced rider).
Tier 4: Sunfyre, Tessarion, Vermax
These are all young dragons who hatched in about 3-5 years of each other and are bonded to their first rider. They are smaller than any of the more previous dragons and less experienced, even if they are faster in good conditions due to their lack of weight. Even if Vermax is younger, unlike Sunfyre and Tessarion he is growing up free ranged on Dragonstone, so he is most likely just as large if not larger. Since these dragons are still young dragons and growing, as are their riders, they aren't much use in battle against other dragons. They are practically teenagers.
Tier 5: Arrax, Moondancer, Stormcloud
These are the youngest dragons. If Tier 4 are teenagers age 17-18, these are the 13-14 year olds (maybe as tall but not nearly as strong). Stormcloud is not a day older than 10. They can carry their riders, but not much more.
Tumblr media
Those are the dragons more or less by themselves. I think there are other factors too
Where they are raised:
Dany's dragons show us that dragons who are living outside grow much quicker than dragons kept inside. All the King's Landing dragons are staying in the Dragonpit, while the Dragonstone dragons are living on the island, mainly the Dragonmont. They also hunt themselves, which the King's Landing dragons don't, so I assume all the Dragonstone dragons are a larger than their same age contemporaries, and a little fiercer too, so for example: Vermax would be larger and probably have better reflexes then Tessarion.
Their experience:
I mentioned this in the Tier list. If a dragon has seen combat, they will be able to profit off of that experience and is why Seasmoke would beat Syrax in my eyes.
Their rider:
I think a rider's bond and capabilities matter a lot. For example, Rhaenys is an incredibly good dragon rider, with a lot of experience and a deep connection to her dragon. Aemond is inexperienced, doesn't know as much about dragons, or his dragon. In a 1:1 I would favour Rhaenys and Meleys over Aemond and Vhagar based on that.
In general, I think that Rhaenyra's and Daemon's children have the advantage over the Green children because they are surrounded by other, more experienced dragonriders, who can teach them everything they need to know. Since Rhaenyra and Daemon left, there is no experienced dragonrider left in King's Landing. Viserys barely counted as a dragonrider and he doesn't seem the kind to be able to instruct his children. Yes, there are the dragonkeepers but they aren't dragonriders. You can have the most naturally talented equestrian, the best racehorse, but if the rider doesn't have the training, they aren't going to get the most out of their horse. So I assume that at the beginning of the war in an 1:1 Jacaerys and Vermax have a good chance of beating Aegon and Sunfyre, even if they are a little bit older.
Now to the Blacks and the Greens:
The Greens have Vhagar, Dreamfyre Sunfyre and Tessarion. The Blacks have Caraxes, Meleys, Syrax, Vermax, Arrax and Moondancer (+Stormcloud)
In my opinion Meleys + Rhaenys would beat Vhagar and Aemond. Caraxes + Daemon would easily defeat the larger Dreamfyre + Helaena. And Syrax + Rhaenyra would defeat Sunfyre + Aegon.
Now in the context of the story:
Aemond screwed up massively (Ned warning Cersei level screw up) and removed himself and Vhagar from the calculation, leaving a large yet docile Dreamfyre and an inexperienced, small Sunfyre, both with inexperienced riders. If the Blacks attacked, they are toast, like no chance. It would be like the SAS running up on a teenager and his mum who used to do karate in high school.
I hope that answers your question and I am sorry if it got too rambly xx Val

Headcanon: is Shego actually 'goth'?
my short answer: no, but it depends really.
I often see people talking about Shego as a 'cartoon goth girl' and I'm pretty sure that everyone is only basing it on her looks and 'attitude'.
The stereotype of gothic and any other type of alternative 'dark' subculture, is wearing black clothes, black lipstick and having a pissed or 'whatever' attitude.
Basic rule for goth: if you listen to goth music, you're goth. That's it. You can dress in 'normal'clothes and still be 'goth' at heart. It's your choice to express it.
Shego's appearance:
I've heard some people say her look and all screams goth but, it's just her ex-superhero suit??? That would make all of the Go siblings (or anyone who has black work clothes) 'goth'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 'stop team go' we find out that Shego's casual clothes are actually fairly 'ordinary' and match with Kim's tastes. Actually, Kim and Shego are REALLY close to one another when it comes to what they like and is Kim a goth? Most definetely not. (And that's OK).
"But in that episode, all of Shego's evilness got taken away" yeah, so? Does that mean being goth is evil? Heck no! It took away 'evil' not interests!
'Regular' people can wear black lipstick. Because doy, it's just make up!
If I put on pink lipstick, it doesn't mean that I am no longer goth or anything. It's always odd to me that if someone doesn't dress 100% goth 24/7 that (most of the time normal) people say "oh you're not a 'real'goth".
'Kay by that logic; where are Shego's platform boots, chains and spikes at ?
Also the stereotype that goths don't go into the sun? I've got news for you buddy; we kind of have to. I despise it because of my sun allergy and getting blinded by it but you can't go around it...
But for a stereotypical gothy cartoon character, Shego really does enjoy sunbathing huh? (And pft ofc goths can sunbathe but look at Sam Manson from Danny Phantom for example, she's covered from head to toe during the pool episode).
Shego's attitude:
I'm honestly puzzled because so often in media you see that the 'goth' is mopey, evil, depressed, dramatic, sarcastic or down right rude when that's the furthest from the truth!!!
Heck if you give Shego a blonde wig, pink lipstick and pink clothes, not only would you get evil 'Barbie', but you'd get a mean girls type-a girl. Think of it as Bonnie2.0. Except with a go-getter attitude and a larger range of skills.
Shego is an antagonist with a strong character with even stronger opinions. But that doesn't make her goth.
Shego's music tastes:
Tumblr media
In the show, it's only ever established that she enjoys listening to MC Honey.
She seems to be kind of 'eh' about Oh Boyz, but perhaps it's because of Drakken who sings it.
I doubt she'd listen to 'goth' (or alternative) music because to hear it might be too... moopy.
The gothic scene is heavily based (started with) the gothic music genre, so if you don't listen to it then chances are: you're not goth.
Does that mean that goths can never listen to any other music genre? Heck no! You can listen to whatever you want, but you've got to know the roots and origins from a subculture.
My conclusion:
In terms of looks, Shego could be considered a 'goth'. But is she actually goth? I think noth.
And unless a cartoon character shows actual participation in the goth culture or states "yeah I'm goth", they're probably not goth.
But that's just my take on it and I'm also not going to be a gatekeeper of what is goth and what's not.
if you consider her 100% goth, that's a-ok!
MIGHT update this in the future but this is it for now.
Bonus:
Dr Drakken however, the man DEFINITELY had an angsty goth teen phase in his life and 100% listens to some punk, rock and new wave when working on his projects along with country, rap and poppy boyband songs.
+ that dark themed Victorian labcoat that he wears? and headcanon eyeliner to hide his eyebags? Sheeeeeesh! 😫👌

Note
Remember how you gave 1-A quirks from AFO? Can you do that with 1-B?
Tumblr media
Kosei-Muscle Augmentation: Since none of the Quirks synergize with Kosei that well, might as well giving him a little extra bulk to help him out.
Kamakiri- Rivet: While Kamakiri has some good offense and mobility, he is seriously lacking in the defense department. Plus it could give his blades a non-lethal option.
Manga-Wings: Unrestricted flight could give Manga a lot more opportunities too apply "Comic", like dropping giant stones on someone, and gives him a good getaway option.
Hiryu-Springlike Limbs: While this could offer him some extra mobility, I think that the main drawback would be how well it works with "Scale", giving his scales extra puncturing power.
Reiko-Storage: As Reiko needs items around to control, why not let her carry around whatever she wants inside of herself to control later? You start fighting her and suddenly get hit by a sink.
Kendo-Air Walk: I think that this could have some fun applications with her martial arts skill, giving herself footholds to attack from wherever she wants and some much needed mobility.
Pony-Spearlike Bones: This could have some potential interactions with "Horn Cannon", like giving Pony's horns more cutting power, or giving her smaller horns for her to control.
Jurota-Absorb and Release: Since he already has a lot that bulk and a high pain tolerance, why not give him a Quirk that relies on both of those things and gives him some unique offensive options.
Sen-Shoulder Mounted Jets: Extra mobility is good and all, but I mostly picked this to turn Sen into a human missile. He could just launch himself at whatever he wants for maximum damage if he wanted.
Ibara: Shock Absorption: Not only could this protect Ibara from anyone who gets close to her, but it could help enhance her vines as well, giving them a greater resistance to attempts to break or cut them.
Awase-Hypertrophy: While any contact based Quirk user would benefit from this Quirk, I think it works with Awase the best since "Weld" release on making as much contact as possible, letting him apply it to larger targets.
Kodai-Overclock: Now that she can move at high speeds, she can rapidly change the size of whatever she wants without worry if she got too close. You wouldn't even knew if she touched something until she release the affect.
Komori-Air Cannon: Considering that you can shape the air blasts and their long range, this could give Komori a great way to spread and focus how and where her spores move, countering some of her biggest weaknesses.
Bondo-Hardflame Fan: This does help his role in defense and gives him some extra offense, but I'm mostly giving this too him because of how it could combine with "Cemendine". Imagine a massive wave of burning, sticky glue.
Tetsutetsu: Tool Arms: This could give Tetstetsu a better range and greater suite of options in a fight while the normally vulnerable arms are protected in his steel coating. Plus it would make him look like a killer robot.
Shoda-Impact Recoil: As these are both based around kinetic attacks, there could be a lot of synergy between the two and how they can work around attacks, like empowering any attack he happens to counter. If nothing else, it can work to shore up Shoda's defenses.
Tokage: Super Regeneration: This has the most obvious interact. If Tokage can heal herself faster, it makes sending out the parts less of a risk, lets them stay away from her for longer periods, and would let her develop body parts at a extremely rapid rate for greater coverage.
Kuroiro-Rivet Stab: This could have a lot of synergy with "Black", letting Kuroiro sneak around and attack whomever he wishes from the safety of shadows. What's more is that it could work to give him a dark spot anywhere, sending them out to travel along them.
Juzo-Transforming Arms: I did consider giving him "Infrared" to see through his own mud, but I think giving him something more varied like “Transforming Arms” could make up for the one note nature of his Quirk and would be more useful for him given his intelligence.
Monoma-Warping: While I was tempted to give him "Overclock", I think this works better. By letting him teleport his allies and enemies, it could let him flex his strategic skills by moving people around, but it could bring people close to him to copy their Quirks if he needs to.

Top Gun/Top Gun Maverick Superhero AU Headcanons
This has been my brain rot for the last few days. So instead of writing the Gahan fic I promised I would, I did this...
Here is some worldbuilding for an AU I will never write, but I hope you guys like it. Be warned, the majority of the headcanons will be IceMav and Hangster related.
Superheros Universe:
Superpowers have been developing for years now. Starting as small advancements in human physicality/mentality (theorized to have been a government experiment gone wrong) and moving through generations, evolving and spreading. They have now taken on stronger genetic mutations that are an intricate part of society and, more importantly, national security.
SFTI program (Super Fighter Tactics Instructor program), more popularly known as TOPGUN, is an elite school for Heroes and Sidekicks organized by the United States joint militant task force with the singular goal of pushing their super soldiers' abilities and team working skills to make them the best they possibly can be.
Tumblr media
(See under the cut for powers/headcanons)
Characters/Powers:
Tumblr media
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell [Hero]
Gravity Manipulation: Maverick can affect the gravity surrounding himself and others in contact with him. By increasing the force of gravity above him while lessening the force beneath him, Maverick is able to generate a tunnel that essentially allows him “flight.” Once in the air, he can maintain the force of gravity beneath him to keep himself afloat.
Limitation: Maverick, if overusing his power, can cause himself to go into vertigo and or pass out midair. He can only maintain so many different layers of gravitation manipulation and, therefore, can only affect, outside himself, two people at once, depending on mass.
Tom "Iceman" Kazansky [Hero]
Ice Powers: (I know this is very on the nose, but do you have anything  better?) Can generate and manipulate ice/frost/general cold. It’s fairly self-explanatory. Iceman has a move called “time out” where he can essentially freeze the surrounding area up to a radius of 20 feet (the standard radius of a carousel).
Limitation: The larger the distance Iceman stretches his powers or the denser the ice, the weaker the structure or the less time it lasts. Ice’s ice manipulation can be more of a subconscious power, so he has to exercise complete control or risk hurting others. He can also hurt himself if he goes “subzero” for too long.
Nick "Goose" Bradshaw [Sidekick]
Flight: He can fly. He does not have wings. His primary role was Maverick’s sidekick, an extra pair of eyes in the air. He and Maverick also used Goose as a conduit for Maverick's gravity manipulation and allowed Goose faster flight. He was Maverick’s “eyes in the sky.”
Limitation: Little to no use in head-to-head combat situations. Flight has a maximum altitude, and use in ground conflicts was limited.
Ron “Slider” Kerner [Sidekick]
Short Range Portals: Slider can open portals up to fifteen feet apart. They can be held for up to two minutes, allowing the average mass of two people to travel at a time. He is particularly useful as Iceman’s sidekick for Ice’s projectiles or for surprise attacks.
Limitation: Portals can not be one-sided; a second portal must always be opened along with the first. If more mass goes through a portal than Slider’s current ability allows, the portals can become unstable and either collapse or distort the mass that goes through. Velocity of an object does not change when going through a portal.
Tumblr media
Carole Bradshaw [Civilian]
Ultrasonic Vocality: Carole can burst anyone's eardrums with an accidental scream or a jubilant cheer. Her power allows her to amplify her vocality up to 180 decibels. She never went into hero work cause it simply wasn’t for her.
Limitation: Carole’s power can activate without intention if she’s surprised or doesn’t actively think to keep herself lowered. Too loud of a sound can cause temporary muteness.
Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw [Hero]
Flight/Ultrasonic: Rooster inherited both his parent's powers (a rarity) and, thus, can fly and emit ultrasonic sounds. He often uses his flight to disorient his opponents before taking them by surprise with his secondary power.
Limitation: Rooster’s flight is his less stable ability, and he often finds himself slipping out of his concentration and losing air. His vocal weaknesses mimic his mother's. Also, because aiming one’s voice is harder than it seems, Rooster often hesitates to use his Ultrasonic ability if there’s potential for his teammates to get caught in the crosshairs.
Jake "Hangman" Seresin [Hero]
Mimicry: (It was a toss-up between this and him just being your standard Superman-esc superhero. Chose this one because of the interview where Glen said something like: “you can swap out the vowels, you can make it an ‘a’, a ‘u’, whatever you want. So yeah…) Hangman can copy the powers of those he touches. He’s able to replicate them at about 85% effectiveness, and his ability has forced him to learn to adapt, pay attention, and become one of the most versatile active heroes. It’s also made him cocksure and forced him to act first since he needs the upper hand if he’s going into a battle without his sidekick.
Limitation: Jake can only copy up to four powers at a time, and the more he has, the less effective they are and the shorter the time period he has to use them. With two powers, he can use them both at full capacity for roughly 4 hours. With four, it reduces to 50% and 2 hours.
Javy "Coyote" Machado [Hero]
Animal Shifting: Coyote can shapeshift into an animal that doesn’t disproportionally warp his mass. He often takes the form of big dogs or cats since they’re easier and don’t stretch his mass too much. He takes on the physical ability and properties of the animals he copies and can copy any animal he’s seen in person.
Limitation: Anything smaller than a german shepherd or larger than a brown bear takes a heavy physical toll on Javy, as a smaller animal condenses his mass to an uncomfortable amount and a larger one stretches it. He can only shift into one animal at a time and cannot mix and match attributes or use only one attribute at a time. Unless it’s his special suit, his clothes do not turn with him.
Tumblr media
Natasha "Phoenix" Trace [Hero]
Rebirth: Phoenix, technically, cannot die. When she dies, she returns and enters “berserk” mode because her body is jump-started with adrenaline and at peak performance. The rebirth states can last up to thirty minutes. Due to the nature of her power, she is highly trained in hand-to-hand combat, as she has to risk herself to fully utilize her power.
Limitation: If the villain won’t kill her or can’t, she has to do it herself, so… trauma. Also, the more rebirths she has in a twenty-four-hour period, the longer it takes for her to be “reborn,” and the less effective the “berserk” mode is. Her maxim rebirths are three within one day.
Robert "Bob" Floyd [Sidekick]
Ultra Stealth: Bob, unless using an external object, cannot be heard or, oftentimes, perceived. His entire presence can blend into the background. He’s a frontline sidekick for recon and stealth attacks, often paired with Phoenix.
Limitation: Bob’s powers are innate, and so it’s more like they are his state of being. It’s a lonely power, forcing him to make himself known actively. He must wear a reflective patch or a sound maker to be actively noticed.
Reuben "Payback" Fitch [Hero]
Rebound: Payback can take any damage dealt to him and throw it right back. If he gets cut, he can reflect that same cut back. He can give back energy as well.
Limitation: He can’t throw something back if it kills him, meaning he can’t just take any hit or damage. Because of this, he has a suit that absorbs a lot of damage which he can then convert into kinetic energy. His powers force him to use his body as collateral, though, and can take him down a lot of the time.
Mickey "Fanboy" Garcia [Sidekick]
Temporary Mania: Fanboy, if he can look his opponent in the eye, can cause them temporary mania, like a fanatic. The mania lasts for roughly 10 minutes and completely disorients the enemy. There is no limit to how many times Fanboy can activate his mania on a singular villain.
Limitation: It’s an up close and personal power that doesn’t allow much in the way of a physical advantage. A trained opponent can also minimize the time spent in mania, or if an intense physical stimulant is introduced, the mania can be broken. The more times mania is used, the easier it is to break out of.
Tumblr media
Beau "Cyclone" Simpson [Hero/North Island CO]
Cyclones: (Stop judging me… these callsigns don’t always leave much for the imagination.)  Cyclone can generate and control up to category EF4 tornadoes. The smaller in size, the more intense the wind speeds. He can create a tornado large enough to have an “eye,” effectively entrapping his opponent.
Limitation: The larger the tornado, the weaker the wind speed. The more tornadoes he generates, the less control and the less strength they have, so he is often limited to three at a time, typically category E2. Regardless of his powers, he cannot affect weather or atmospheric conditions as his tornadoes also have a maximum height.
Solomon "Warlock" Bates [Sidekick]
Illusions: Warlock can conjure light distortions or sometimes fully formed illusions that often look like “magic.” His powers are most suited in a support/distraction role.
Limitation: What he conjures are not physical and cannot do actual damage. The sunnier the day, his solid illusions are less effective since they are based on light.
Bernie "Hondo" Coleman [Sidekick/Professional Maverick Handler]
Telepathy: (Literally, I spent 20 minutes trying to learn what Hondo means and got nothing helpful, so… this is what I got.) He can telepathically communicate with anyone and multiple people as long as they are within a thirty feet radius. His largest asset is acting as a multiway radio between heroes in active combat without the fear of radio lines being tapped since Hondo is the radio.
Limitation: The more people on the “radio channel,” the more confusing it can get for Hondo. The longer he keeps his channels open, the worse the fallout will be, full migraine to basically going into a small coma.
Before TGM Headcanons:
The night Bradley learns Maverik pulled his papers for the National Security Heroics Institute Program, he blew up. Almost literally. He went off the rails so badly that he blew out all the glass in Maverik's house with his shouting and didn't even realize he'd caused Maverick's ears to bleed.
Maverick was deaf in his left ear for almost a month after the fight, and that wasn't even what hurt the most. That had been Bradley walking out the door and never looking back.
After Goose died in a TOPGUN exercise (Ice's wall of ice, Maverick attempting to slow Goose's flight by force so he wouldn't hit it, Slider's ill-timed portal, Goose not being able to stop his spinning and get control... an accident all around) Carole never wanted Bradley following in her late husband's footsteps and asked Mav (who had to ask his husband) to pull Bradley's papers.
Ice and Maverick don't actually get together until after Goose's death, after Ice comes back from the gulf, while Maverick opts to stay stateside and help Carole and Bradley.
Once upon a time, Goose was talking about Carole, the lovesick fool he was. "My honey's got the voice of an angel." "Bradshaw, your wife could shatter eardrums with hardly a whistle." "An angel, Wolfman."
Carole used to get teased a lot in high school because she'd always had lousy control over her voice and just got too darn excited, but Goose never made her feel silly for it, taking all her loud energy for himself and making sure everyone knew he was the winner for it. Ringing ears and all when Carole said yes when he asked her to marry him.
Maverick had been wearing earplugs cause he wasn't an idiot.
Mav and Ice aren't enemies anymore. Not after the "you can be my sidekick any time," "bullshit, you can be mine." But neither had planned that it would go beyond a one-night stand (which somehow turned into a weekend stand and breakfast the Monday morning). It had.
Ice couldn't stay stateside like Maverick, and Maverick didn't ask him to. They send letters. They make calls. They somehow make it work, even with the distance and the potential death always hanging over their heads, especially as the villains start getting more overt.
Ice calls him six months later to tell him he's docked on the East port, so close yet so far. Six hours later, when the sun sets, Ice hangs out on the flight deck, trying not to frost over the metal too badly. A shadow crosses over him. It's Maverick. He's hovering like he's not risking getting shot out of the fucking sky by using his powers around a carrier he's not assigned to.
It's dangerous and ballsy and so fucking stupid. It's the first time Ice tells Mav he loves him.
Sometimes when Ice and Maverick kiss, Ice loses control, and it has given Mav a cold once or twice.
Sometimes Maverick accidentally floats them in zero gravity. Ice will never (even though it's very obvious) tell Mav just how much he actually likes making out (and more) without the pressure of the world on them.
During wintertime in Mirimar, if Ice is on leave and Maverick isn't running errands, he will build up an icerink for them, Carol, and Bradley, just for some wintertime cheer because he remembers Maverick telling him once that Goose loved ice-skating even though he couldn't keep his ass off the ice to save his life.
Bradley gets his superhero name because while he's got his Ultrasonic power on lock, flight? Ironically. Not so much. So sometimes, instead of flying, he sort of has to come crashing to the ground.
The other hero trainees had said he was like a Rooster. Loud as hell but a terrible fucking flyer.
Bradley has broken too much glass in his life to ever repay. Sometimes, he's done it intentionally...
Jake has always gotten shit about his powers, especially from his father, because he's "just a little copycat, can't even have a power all on his own, has to ride the coattails of better heroes."
Instead of letting that define him, however, Jake took it as a challenge to take others' powers and make them better, learn to use them in new ways, superior ways, so that no one could say he wasn't worth the title of hero.
This, of course, did not earn him any favors, not that Jake minded all that much. You didn't need friends to be the best.
That changed a bit with Javy, mostly because while Jake could study and analyze and perfect human powers, animal behavior? Not so much, and it actually helped the two become friends pretty quickly.
Jake hates copying Javy's power the most because he doesn't like being in a skin that isn't his own, but Javy is his sidekick, and Jake needs a power to start off a fight.
Once, when he was practicing with Javy's power, Bradley had come in and, knowing it was Jake, had made the joke, "is this your way of telling me you're a dog, Bagman?"
Jake and Bradley did not get along at first. Since Bradley could use multiple abilities like him, Jake thought that Bradley was his best competitor. It made Bradley the biggest target for Jake's need to be better, and Bradley, seeing too much of Maverick in Jake's easy swagger and seemingly endless confidence, pretty much was always on the verge of punching the blonde in the face.
It's only after a tough fight where they have to work together (Bradley needing another body in the sky and Jake running out of possible powers to copy) that they reach a stalemate.
That is, of course, when Jake realizes that it's not just the competition he likes about Bradley. It's also because he's fiercely loyal, just as proud as he is, and is damn good-looking, even with the pornstache.
Jake doubles down on being a dickhead, but at least attempts to keep it teasing, and Bradley takes it in stride more easily.
Before graduating TOPGUN (Jake taking the trophy by half a point with Bradley and Natasha tied for second), during the celebratory drinking, Bradley actually compliments Jake, with no pretense, no double meaning, and Jake, a little too tipsy, takes it as a sign that Bradley might be interested enough to sleep with him.
It goes very poorly, mostly because the room is filled with superheroes, when Jake goes to kiss him. He brushes up against Static, another TOPGUN graduate with an electric power, and ends up zapping Bradley pretty bad instead of actually kissing him.
Bradley hadn't even realized what Jake was going to do and just let that fact he'd gotten a very literal shock go, figuring Jake was too drunk.
The moment was gone, Jake was now sober, and he chickened out from trying anything else.
They were dispatched to other sides of the world two days later.
During TGM Headcanons:
The next time Jake and Bradley see each other, Jake has a villain kill, and they've been called back to TOPGUN for a mission no one knows anything about, and they've back slid into being rivals again. At least from Bradley's point of view.
Regardless of the universe, Jake is actually, in his own stupid way, trying to goad Bradley into being better, doing what he needs to do so he doesn't die with his head up his ass, fighting Maverick for whatever fucking reason.
Phoenix is there too, and gets a new sidekick in Bob, who is cute and uncomfortably unnoteable.
He's not cute enough to stop her from deploying her trauma "joke," upon being asked what her power is. Which is to show instead of tell.
The first time she pulled that same joke on Bradley, she'd jumped off a four-story building. Bradley had thought her power had something to do with flight and only realized, the closer she got to the ground, not doing anything, that he was wrong. He couldn't get to her before she hit the ground, and it took her about a minute for all her bones to reset.
He'd asked her, through tears, because he thought she'd died for good, what the fuck she was thinking, and Natasha had laid it out for him. He was gonna have to get used to it. It was her power, and she had to die to use it.
Bob hadn't cried, but he had thrown up.
The kicker of it all is that Jake and Bradley work well together with Javy, Phoenix, and Bob, but they're both too in their own heads about everything; it's making the whole mission prep a mess.
When everything snaps and Jake brings up Bradley's dad, it's only because everyone is holding them back that Bradley doesn't pop Jake's head like a melon.
Even seeing red and spitting blood, Bradley would never willingly attempt to hurt a fellow hero, especially not when surrounded by other heroes who could also get hurt.
Bob wins them dogfight football because half the time, even with his reflector patch on his shirt, only Phoenix and Rooster can keep tabs on him.
During mission practice, a simulated energy beam almost hits Coyote, but Phoenix intercepts it. Bob is able to get a piece of her away from the blast radius, and she's able to regenerate, but it's terrifyingly touch and go.
Ice does not die.
Instead, he shows up at TOPGUN to get everyone's head set straight.
He and Mav run everyone through drills again, this time working as a team, and it seems to help, but Bradley is still holding himself back.
He's not expecting his name to be called, but it is. Maverick picks him as wingman for the mission, and it goes tits up pretty much immediately.
They manage to infiltrate and blow up the super serum refinement plant but when they leave, they're intercepted by defense systems, and villains are in pursuit.
Maveric takes a missile meant for Bradley, and instead of leaving, Bradley disregards Cyclone's orders and returns for him.
Once the formation is broken, Hondo can't keep the radio channel between the team open.
The only reason they make it back at all is because Jake is waiting with Halo.
The second he hears that Hondo had lost communication with Maverick and then Rooster, he's sprouting wings, grabbing Phoenix's power (since she'd retreated with Bob as directed and is back at the base) while he's at it, and taking off.
Jake dies twice in order to get Bradley and Maverik out of the shit storm they're in, bagging himself another villain kill.
The first time he dies is an accident. A villain intercepts him en route, but it works out in the end. He's able to get to both of them just in the nick of time, catching the projectile meant for them in the chest. He's close enough to kill the villain in the blast as well.
Bradley just about loses his mind in the calm of the aftermath because Jake's on the ground, bloody and not moving.
It's only when Maverick covers his mouth does Bradley realize he'd been screaming.
They get to Jake, and that's when he starts coming around.
"Jesus Bradshaw, I know you have pipes like that, but give a guy a warning. Almost killed me a third time." "A third- A third time?!"
It's not the time and Jake, more refreshed than Bradley or Maverick, goes on ahead of them to clear the path back to base.
After TGM Headcanons:
Iceman threatens to freeze Maverick to the bed if he ever pulls shit like that again. Maverick, of course, just replies that if Ice is in the bed with him, there's no chance of him leaving anyway.
During the "we lived" celebrations, Jake decides he's done not at the very least trying to have something with Bradley and drags him out of the bar. Bradley goes willingly, though he does question what Jake's doing.
"Didn't wanna zap you this time." This, of course, confuses Bradley, but then Jake drags him into a kiss, so he's not thinking about much else for the next little while.
When the kiss breaks, both of them realize they're not on the ground anymore, which is ridiculous and hysterical, and Bradley lowers them to the ground to kiss Jake again.
Jake admits, a few months later, after he and Bradley have talked and are together, after seemingly endless therapy appointments, that he didn't know if he'd come back a second time during the mission, that he didn't know if his mimicry of Phoenix's powers would hold after dying at least once already.
Bradley proceeds to thoroughly ravish him in a life-affirming way after breaking a window shouting at him.
Maverick is taken out of active duty and teaches full-time at TOPGUN so that he can stay close to Ice and Bradley since they've reconciled.
A year and a half later, when Jake asks Bradley to marry him, he has Iceman make him an icerink.
Maverick had given him that hint when Jake had asked for his permission.
Maverick wears earplugs again because Bradley might look like Goose, but he's still Carole's boy through and through.
Well... this was a lot, and basically just the barebones of a fanfiction I will never write. I hope whoever made it through all this had fun reading.
These headcanons and character things are completely up for grabs if anyone feels inspired by them btw.
Thank you again for reading!!

How do I give my anime designs more character? I don’t want them to look bland, especially not the girls!
I had a whole different argument here and suddenly realised I was answering a question you didn't ask. I'm sick at the moment so my brain isn't working the best so forgive me if my answers seems a bit all over the place.
Most importantly, and something i think a LOT of modern anime does badly these days, is to not be afraid to PUSH the expressions of your anime girls.
if you'll forgive the mini-rant; modern anime has a really bad habit of not allowing female characters to have "ugly" expressions. Or when they do, they make them simplified emojis or make the one second of extreme emotion SO extreme it becomes completely off putting. Especially as there will be a tendency to only push an extreme expression in one single episode during a "dramatic scene".
This results in most girls in modern anime looking more like the limited expression range of a Vtuber than actual characters. There ARE exceptions, but this is a MASSIVE issue which was not the case in the 80s or 90s and only really started becoming more common around the mid 2000s.
Comparison examples! (you know I love those). I am using still images instead of gifs so the animation doesn't mask the drawing. But I'll show some animated gifs later in this ask
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This extends beyond just facial expressions tho. Or rather... it doesn't.
Most modern anime shows will have the characters pull expressions in their face, but have their bodies relatively static, even in extreme emotions. If you compare the two screenshots above, the more modern example has a more extreme push to her eyes, but in the Dirty pair screenshot, not only is Kei's mouth open very wide, but her head is tilted backwards and to the side, her shoulders are drawn up, and she gives the impression even in a still image that she is in the middle of a physical reaction to something which annoyed her. Similarly, Yuri down there is also annoyed, and even though we only really see her eyes, you can tell she's hunched over and seething. In the modern anime screenshot she's just.... got the default "these are my angry eyes!" face with nothing really happening elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Her shoulders I guess are kind of drawn up but so barely you wouldn't be blamed to think they always look like that.
And this comes to the second point.
DRAW FROM LIFE AND/OR PHOTOS.
There is NOTHING wrong using a pose doll to figure out a challenging pose. I have used pose dolls when I am unsure how a certain pose looks from a specific angle. But looking at real life, whether photos or if you can, life drawing, will be your biggest tool in figuring out how to breathe more life into your poses and art.
Now, to answer the ACTUAL question you asked about design;
I have to admit that character design is not a strength of mine. I have little to no practice with it myself and when I design OCs I end up not liking them or not enjoying their designs. I feel someone far more skilled at the design part of design might have better input, but I can tell you what I know just from observation;
The first BIG advice is; do not confuse interesting design with clutter.
This doesn't mean strip down your character design to look like a Y/N drawing, but more have every element you introduce into your design be there with some kind of thought in mind as to how it applies to the character and who they are as a person. This is a mistake I often see made with characters both OCs as well as professionally. Where character designers seem to think adding MORE to a design will make a character more interesting to look at. (PreCure has this problem a LOT)
Giving your character too many details without some kind of larger unification or idea, makes them harder to envision for people, because there's too much visual noise.
If I tell you to think of Link from Legend of Zelda, it doesn't matter WHICH Link you picture 9although at the moment it's most likely TotK or BotW Link), Link has unified design elements which means regardless of how detailed or cluttered his outfit becomes, we all know what Link looks like;
1: Blonde hair on the longer side usually, with fringe and side bangs 2: blue diamond shaped eyes, pointed ears, light skin 3: wears some variation of green. Can dress in other colours but Green is an identifying colour. Even in ToTK and BotW where he is most often shown in blue, Green is still the vast majority of the outfits and gear he will wear 4: boots and light coloured tights/pants 5: Twink
You don't need to look at a picture of Link to know this is what Link looks like. Other details like his earring, belts, gloves, bracers, undershirt etc are all there and enhance these elements and distinguish one Link from another exist, but they are not the unifying elements to Link's character design.
On top of this, all of Link's character design make SENSE for his character, what he does, where he comes from etc.
He is a Hylian so he has pointed ears and is generally elf-like in appearance. He spends most of his time in European forests so he dresses in green. When he wears other colours it usually corresponds to where he is currently traveling. He carries a sword and shield so he has a belt with scabbard. He carries an entire pantry worth of food with him, so he has various satchels and bags on his person (but not too many or the design becomes cluttered). He wears light protective gear to show he gets into fights but they are usually not heavy in nature because Link is nimble and relies heavily on movement.
This doesn't tell us anything about his personality because Link doesn't really have one, but it's a very strong character design all the same and informs us what kind of character he is and what sort of life he leads as well as what sort of background he might have (He is a skilled adventurer. Not a rich sheltered boy who has never been outside of a city before or something of the like).
Tumblr media
Now I'm gonna compare him to the character design of a Mass Effect character which I don't THINK you'd have played since your profile says you're a teen and the game is rated M 👀 (or you might have, idk I'm not your mom) but ANYWAY! Looking at a character design which tells us about their PERSONALITY as well as way of living.
I'm not going to use any of the aliens as examples because then you have to bring in the subject of alien species into the equation and how they stand apart from the various other members of their species and etc etc. So we'll talk about a human character.
So... this is Jack
Tumblr media
Although you may think her tattoos make her design cluttered, they don't because you don't really need to know what every individual tattoo looks like. You just know "Jack is covered in Tattoos".
So just looking at her, you can pretty much instantly pin down her personality. That being; she will most likely fucking stab you if you say one thing to annoy her.
She's like a punk on steroids. Shaved head, heavy make up, COVERED in tattoos, both ears capped in some futuristic piercings, some or other heavy duty uniform except she decided she'd rather walk around fucking topless and boots that could crush a man's skull.
Everything about her design screams "don't fuck with me I am VERY unhinged and will kill a man for less than the $4 in his pocket".
Jacks' entire personality is on display in her design. And the design as a whole present a single concept of who she is as a person, while ALSO tying into her backstory and lifestyle. (escaped prisoner from high security facility, still wearing the prison uniform, has been in an unknown number of gangs, has an extremely casual approach to sex and sexuality, uses her intimidation as a first line of defense to prevent people from getting close to her indicating a painful past)
And then you compare her to her design in the following game
Tumblr media
This is a great design because it not only informs you on Jack's personality, but also her GROWTH AS A CHARACTER.
Her design is, at least compared to her first appearance, softer. She's grown her hair long enough to tie it into a ponytail, making her appear more feminine. But she still shaves the sides so you know she can still shank you if she wants.
Her outfit is still VERY revealing but she's also dressed borderline decently. She is not as defensive any more and could probably even walk around in normal society without getting a ticket (and then shooting the cop in response).
However even covered up, she's wearing a leather studded jacket, and she is still displaying her tattoos on her chest and hands proudly. She's still the same person... just less likely to murder you (although the option is still there if needed).
Now compare these character designs to some others which I would count as being "too busy" and tell me if these designs tell you ANYTHING about what kind of personalities these characters might have, what kind of lifestyle to they live, what do their environments and world looks like, or what it says about them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact; that last one is NOT a magical girl, but is in fact an alchemist who is living in a slowly dying world whose resources are being depleted and the future looks grim and hopeless as humanity tries to navigate this slow apocalypse.
I have no idea if any of that made sense or is useful in any way, but hopefully you get what I mean?
Look at real life. Don't rely on just referencing other anime and pose dolls. Don't clutter a character design with details that don't mean anything. make the parts of your character design you use have meaning or purpose. Even if that purpose is just "to give them a silhouette different to the other characters so she's easy to identify by sight"
