@ ALL RISE FANS THAT MAKE COMICS & STORIES
So I’ve noticed that in this fandom it’s common to include Deaf/ASL-using-characters into stories, which is honestly AMAZING and makes me SO HAPPY TO SEE, but many of us aren’t deaf we rely on resources, therefore:
My ASL teacher gave us this website cause it’s updates constantly (ASL evolves lots) and it’s a lot more accurate and reliable than just google :))
To work it- type the word, and a word bank will pull up, click on the term u want and a video/description of the sign and word will appear!!!
It’s rlly simple and has most words and if it doesn’t it’s bc it’s finger spelled probs!!!!
If u want more in-depth good grammar, search up “five parameters ASL”, “glossing in ASL” and watch a few videos to see “how sentence structure differs in ASL”
As always, remember it’s ok to make mistakes/notice a mistake, just be mindful and kind :D most of us aren’t out for malice and if someone is it’ll probs be very obv 😭
Happy Creating!!
Edit: A THANK U SO MUCH FOR THE REBLOGS :)) if anyone ever needs any help drop a comment or look at other reblogs!! There’s lot of other resources/tips there!!!

You can just see how he grows obsessed with Lou xD
"Cheesy action hero whose movies I DON'T enjoy!" Straight after: "Rejecting Baron Draxum is nothing short of blasphemous!" is what kills it honestly. This yokai was down bad for a human.
The fact that Draxum calls Lou's combat skills "Inate genetic gifts" like Lou hasn't trained for them. Pre-redeption Draxum was such a Eugenicist & scientific racist, it's not even subtext.
It's like "No way this human earned his skill, is must be some aspect of his body."
It's also funny how every powerful Yokai who felt attracted to Lou also kidnapped him. Big Mama and Draxum both kept him in a literal cage :') - They just don't respect this human as a full person
(Has nothing to do with this but Lou's cheeks do the squish)

Hi @birthday-cake-rockz! I hope its okay if I answer your questions here in a separate post. I definitely have some tips and thoughts for help with drawing Raph.
First of all, I recommend This free PDF of the book "Morpho - Fat and Skin Folds: Anatomy for Artist" for those who are interested in really getting familiar & comfortable with drawing larger/fat/thick body types. (Make sure you click the second link, the first one is broken)
Now for Raph specifically, I do have a one very important shape I use when I draw him that might be helpful:
Tumblr media
A lot of people like to associate diamonds with Raph as much as squares, and I think that's accurate to his design, too! The boy has a lot of serious neck muscle going on, and so his trapezius muscles and those surround it are gonna be more visible. Which actually creates a diamond shape around his collarbone and upper body. If you follow along with the angles of his shell, you can create this shape to help give him that stronger upper body look!
As for his leg proportions, that's a bit tricky because unlike his brothers, Raph's lower limbs are disproportionate to his upper limbs. It's a case of "you have to understand the rules of anatomy in order to break them".
SO!! Real quick anatomy lesson that I learned in art school: the average adult body should be about 7 heads high. Because the boys are teenagers, theirs come up to be about 6 heads high, which I credit to their younger age. But as you can see by the red marked areas, everything is still in normal proportion.
Tumblr media
Raph, on the other hand, is different.
Tumblr media
Raph's arms are as long as his body is, and his legs are much shorter than his arms. Because of this, he's actually disproportionate to his brothers, since his height is only about 5 and a half heads tall, rather than 6 or 7. In particular, his thighs seem to be unequally shorter in length than the calves. I think its important to keep that in mind when draw him! Because even if you know he's made up of all these thick, blocky shapes, if you try to give him the normal proportions you would Leo or Donnie or Mikey, it might still not look right. He's a stocky lad, and his upper body strength is showcased by these design choices.
Hope all this was helpful for you guys. Now go be free and draw him to your hearts content! :)
Additionally, here are several other links to posts people have created that give references of Raph and the other turtles! I'm sure these will be a big help, too.

things I liked about the episode “Bad hair day”
Leo just wanting a day to relax and take a break from being comic relief. Me too man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And his little outfit is just ashahsgsbbsvavgh
The fact that he wears more clothes is just hilarious to me. Like
The Octopus man is literally an Elton John reference
The “I’m still learning special” made me bust out laughing on first and every rewatch
The name “last resort” is genius
Tumblr media
And him laying in the sun is such an (unintentional) turtle thing. Soaking in rays and absorbing warmth just reflects the fact that he’s a turtle. Little man.
Tumblr media
I had to add this picture of Raph doing the same I mean LOOK AT HIM ^v^
also WHY DOES LEO LOOK SO GOOD WITH HAIR?!? LIKE ?!? HELLO?!?
Tumblr media
Silly boy <3
he just consumes chocolate off of his feet like nobody’s problem.
I can relate when watching the hair start to strangle him. Personally I have very long and thick hair and it deserves its own zip code. My hair will get into my food, my mouth, eyes, and rip regular rubber bands. I have to tie my hair down so it doesn’t strangle me
Tumblr media
^that’s me
Also. When I was watching this ep for the first time and watched him say
“Looks like this tortoise…beat the hair”
Tumblr media
I started to laugh and wheeze so hard that I had to lean onto my dresser for support. I started coughing and choking and crying and rolling on the floor pounding my first into the floor and my sister thought I was dying. Maybe it’s just me being hysterical but in my opinion that joke was THE BEST JOKE In the entire show.
there are probably some other things I missed or forgot but that was it for the most part. Seriously, I love this show, I could gush on about it forever. You hear that, Nickelodeon? Where are all the SpongeBob fanfics and fan comics and AU’s and AMV’s, huh? Wait, THERE IS’NT ANY. Just Rerun old SpongeBob episodes and bring back what the CROWD DEMANDS. Because we all have our pitchforks in hand

Krang Will Rise
I have a couple theories, regarding the Krang.
There is such little evidence for it, that I don’t even think there’s evidence against it. But hear me out.
I think only Krang prime can abolish mystics. It’s not an ability tied to every Krang, only to him.
Thé Krang value strength above all else, putting no remorse into losing those deemed weak. As such, wouldn’t that make Krang Prime, their leader, the strongest? And what better way to deem yourself the strongest than carrying a unique ability that takes away your enemies greatest potential threat.
Another reason: it seems there are three types of krang. The biotech, the warrior, and the interrogator. I’m not sure how much they overlap, but I do think they carry specialities. Given krang brother is most often asked to- spread their krangness. He is responsible for krangification, domain expansion, and manipulating the technology they have (Nevermind how all these abilities make him the perfect match for Donnie)(also think Krang Brother is mute). Krang sister is the most skilled and best fighter. I’m sure she outclasses the boys in that regard. I’d go as far to say she’s second in command, leading the charge while brother krang stays behind (her role as commander matches as Commander O’Niels opposite in war, hence their quarrel). Leaving Krang Prime, who has the ability to dig into a persons mind, manipulate their captives, control the hive mind, and abolish mystic powers. Perhaps rare amongst Krang, this makes them the perfect leader (do I even need to explain why he’s Leo’s main antagonist, his opposite in every way?).
I mentioned how krang brother is likely responsible for krangification, which leads me to a second point. Clearly, from the start of the invasion to the end in the bad timeline, the krangs numbers increased 100 fold. From 3 lone survivors to hundreds if not more. Which has led me to wonder how krang are created. I have two theories: 1) in the bad timeline, the krang in the prison dimension didn’t die. Meaning that when Leo grabbed the key in the movie, and altered time, the resulting explosion caused the krang to be wiped out. 2) the probably more likely one- they repopulated.
Thé krang are clearly parasitic creatures. Meaning their reproduction is likely from a source, that source being humans. “Recreating this world in the image of krang.” Krang possession is simple, and any krang can do it, latch a bit of themselves to a human and start the battle of wills. Krang dogs are amother easier way to make more, a quick process that mangles the hosts body. We see this happen with the foot clan. But if you want powerful krang, with no chance to turn on you, and to truly become one with krang, you transform them.
Raph was found in a bubble. In a slimy krang cocoon stuck to the ceiling and filled with glowing yellow goop. He was going to be turned, transformed into Krang. And he was going to be powerful, his source material being stronger than most. He was- until the process was interrupted. Notice how the krangification didn’t come from the outside, it wasn’t attached, it was growing inside him. And, unlike the other krangified peoples we saw, his eye turned purple. It wasn’t just covered in hoop with the yellow hive mind eye, it was purple. Let it be a testament to Raphs inner strength cause he very well may have accomplished a feat deemed impossible to overcome. The process wasn’t supposed to be reversible, he wasn’t supposed to be able to break free, he was krang now. Krang Prime could feel his struggle, sense his resistance, and hear his thoughts as the turtle fought it off.
Once you turned, there was no going back. You were krang. Your old life didn’t matter. Your old friends didn’t matter. You had a new family. A new purpose to fulfill. New powers to explore. And given treasures for the hunt. The mark of a krang and a fucking massive piece of armor. This way of reproduction was useful when hunting new prey, as their knowledge of the species past through, truly allowing them to know their enemies and conquer planets. Krang can never die.
Then again. I could be wrong.

Which Witch?
This moment in "Donnie vs. Witch Town" has repeatedly caught my notice, and I’ve now recovered enough to break it down!
First off, here’s the list verbatim:
Visitors  Suzy Bannion Heather Donahue Nancy Downs Minnie Castevet Katia Vajda Miss Anjelica Ernst Samantha Stephens April O’Neil
Unfamiliar names plus cursive plus a lack of high-quality stills meant decoding this took a little longer than expected.
I have attempted to minimize spoilers for the mentioned horror movies when possible, but in pursuing two contradictory goals, I have accomplished both imperfectly. C'est la vie!
Please note: I am by no means a film buff, so feel free to add any relevant context!
Oh, the Horror . . . [films]!
"Suzy Bannion" would be a reference to the 1977 film Suspiria in which Suzy, a ballet student, finds herself investigating a supernatural coven of witches.
"Heather Donahue" is a homage to the 1999 "found footage" movie The Blair Witch Project*, wherein three student filmmakers investigate a legend of a witch in the woods.
"Nancy Downs", from the 1996 R-rated film The Craft, is one of a trio of students rumored to be dabbling in witchcraft.
"Minnie Castevet", on the other hand, hails from the dark 1968 film Rosemary’s Baby (based on the book by Ira Levin), wherein Minnie’s character is suspected of being a member of a coven.
"Katia Vajda", originates from the 1960 film Black Sunday, (loosely based on Nikolai Gogol’s short story "Viy"). Katia was accused of being a vampiric witch and executed by her brother—but that isn’t the end of her story.
"Miss Anjelica Ernst" simultaneously references Roald Dahl’s 1973 novel The Witches and its 1990 film adaptation of the same name. One member of the notorious child-hating coven is the Grand High Witch, Eva Ernst, who was portrayed by Anjelica Huston on the big screen.
"Samantha Stephens" lives the life of a "good witch" in the 1964 television series Bewitched.
Special Bonus!
"Abigail the Good", founder of Witch Town, may be an allusion to the character "Abigail Pershing" from the 2015 television show Good Witch.
I’ll go ahead and credit my dad as my research assistant; he described these references as "deep cuts".
And really, what higher praise is there?

How Leo’s role as face man prevents him from confiding with his team
Watching throughout the entire series we see Leo constantly keep up with his role as the face man of the group
While on missions he can use his charisma and persuasion in order to get people to go along with his plans without letting people know what he’s really thinking
But he never seems to put it down
•Leos Emotional Guard
At first glance Leo’s entire personality revolves around being lenient laid back and chill, and to everyone else it makes him seem like a very open book, and that’s why the face man role works out for him
But it means that no one is really aware of anything beneath the surface. They never bother to ask because who would need to?
However, this also includes Leo’s family
Despite his chilled back personality Leo is one of the most emotionally guarded ones out of all of the brothers
Throughout the series we can see little moments of vulnerability from each members of the family, digging deeper into their emotions and their insecurities and then go on to discuss said feelings and gain some form of comfort or closure from their family. Most notable ones shown below
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Donnie in “Donnie vs Witch Town”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raph in “Anatawa Hitorijinai”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikey in “Hidden City’s Most Wanted”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
April in “Always Be Brownies”
Splinter & Donnie in “Turtledega Nights”
•How Leo is Different
Similar to everyone else, Leo is shown to have these moments sprinkled in too but they never occur with his family
The two most memorable moments we have are shown in “Portaled Jacked” with Senor Hueso and during his one-on-one conversation with Casey
Why these two characters and not one of his close family members?
Because it’s easier talking about problems to strangers and people who don’t know you as they have no previous knowledge or connotations of you to fall back on and there’s no feelings of burden or guilt if you believe the topic will never be discussed with them again. There’s less feelings of consequences that comes with being vulnerable towards people who don’t know you well. Because if you open up more to the people who do, the risk that their opinion of you will change gets higher
Then we add in the fact that Leo is already extremely guarded of his emotions. He doesn’t want his brothers to think less of him because he already isn’t confident of his place in the team already and thus doesn’t confide in them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
•Deflecting with Humor
And then the two moments where we do see little slips in Leo’s carefully constructed masks that occur around his family, which we can find in “Minotaur Maze” and “Many Unhappy Returns”
He ends up immediately backtracking and deflecting with humor, thus changing the subject and preventing anyone from delving into it further and reacting to the quips instead
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“You know it’d really help me if you guys said that I was your champion.” “Just open it!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“This whole situation was my plan all along. If it wasn’t, then why’d I ask your tailor to make me this outfit?” “So we could both perish looking super fly?”
What makes it worse is that Leo has such a habit of doing it that his family expects it, which  then causes them to believe there’s no underlying issues beneath the surface and thus don’t react accordingly. (with the addition that both parties had valid reasons for being upset with him at the time)
But it causes a situation of Leo internalizing his emotions, and if he doesn’t expand on the topic himself, then his family won’t see a reason to either nor think there’s an issue to begin with
•The Movie
To add onto this point, we see Raph and Leo arguing over Leo’s role as leader. As usual Leo deflects the argument with humor and avoids the situation. But we can see during the argument that how Leo privately lets down his guard and for a second the audience is able to see how he’s really reacting to Raph’s words. However, it is apparent that Raph doesn’t  see this side of him and most likely never really has
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“You just don’t get it Leo”
Now as the audience it is very easy to draw to the conclusion that Leo has clear issues with his role as the leader and most likely many insecurities regarding it thus why he acts the way he does. Like any other serious situation, he copes with, he deflects with humor and tries to avoid it
This argument then implies that in the two years since Leo was made leader of the group, he never revealed his internal issues with it and never made it apparent to his brothers either because he hates being vulnerable
The face man role works for him because it requires skillful work in that you can manipulate people the way you want to without ever letting them know what your thinking. And Leo carries that role with him when it comes to his brothers and family as well. But this doesn’t work out for him anymore when he becomes the leader and communication becomes so important to the team. (I talk about this more on a different post)
Thus the events of the movie and why things played out the way they did
Naturally he learns how to trust in his team more when the situation becomes dire enough that he realizes he can no longer keep deflecting
But even after all the traumatic events that he went through. When it comes to the one time we see him really cry. He still only lets himself cry when he’s completely alone within the prison dimension
Tumblr media
TLDR: Leo’s role as the face man is kept on both on and off duty as we find that he is really one of the most emotionally guarded out of all of his brothers as he doesn’t want to let them know what he’s really feeling out of fear that they might think less of him as he is already insecure of his placement in the group and would rather confide in people who don’t know him well over his family where he runs the risk of them treating him differently
Honestly, “Mr. Emotionally Unavailable” has some real competition ahead of him
If we were being completely blunt, all of the brothers have trouble when it comes to letting go of their real emotions, Donnie just being out of his depth with them and it being uncomfortable, Raph wanting to be strong for his brothers, and Mikey most likely wanting to focus on his brother’s emotions over his own as the Therapist of the group, but i believe the Leo definitely has the worst case out of all of them.

ROTTMNT Character Fighting Style Analysis - Part 2: Raphael
Tumblr media
This is a continuation of my first post about analyzing each of the Turtles' (+April's) fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses in a fight, and how Rise uses that to highlight different aspects of their character. I highly encourage you read that first before hopping into this one for full context. There is a bit of a TL;DR at the end.
[Part 1: Leo] [...] [Part 3: Mikey] [Part 4: Donnie] [Part 5: April]
Next up is our spikey, yet cuddly, Raphael.
Raphael: The Bruiser/Tank
(Note: I occasionally differentiate between Raph's mystic powers and ninpo powers in this because his clone powers in the finale are quite a bit different from the powers he has with his tonfas)
Fight Style:
Aggressive and Heavy
Raph is the team’s resident smasher - he tends to go into a fight with the intention of doing as much damage as possible. He generally prefers to fight on the offensive but has shown that he is capable of handling himself defensively too. His great size and strength mean he can deal strong physical attacks while giving him a distinct defensive advantage, both of which are supported by his mystic powers. He usually fights the enemy head-on, charging in to fight someone one-on-one or mow through a large group of enemies. Raph also has a good bit of speed to back up his attacks, but lacks overall dexterity, causing him to struggle against enemies with better movement or recover when knocked to the ground.
Tumblr media
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
The Bruiser
As the team’s “strong man” it is only natural that Raph plays the role of the Bruiser in battle, and it is the role we most often see him in throughout the show. He is able to utilize his great strength and aggressive fighting style to deliver strong, devastating hits to his foes in order to weaken them or fully defeat them. In this role, Raph is a very offensive fighter as the Bruiser as he goes in with the intention of defeating his enemies right away with a singular powerful punch, then switching to quicker, smaller punches should his first attack be ineffective. His mystic powers enhance his effectiveness in this role as seems to get a boost in strength when using his large mystic form, while his ninpo powers allow him to deliver more punches in faster succession with his clones.
Tumblr media
The Tank
While Raph is more often than not seen going on the offensive, he also acts as the Tank of the team, taking on a more defensive role by taking on stronger enemies that may overwhelm his brothers or protecting them directly. Thanks to his large size, Raph usually ends up going toe-to-toe with equally large enemies, pulling their focus on him instead of his brothers. His inherent toughness also means he can take hits his brothers can’t, occasionally shielding them from oncoming damage. His ability to create a mystic construct around himself increases his durability and allows him to better shield himself and his allies.
Tumblr media
Utility:
Raph’s greatest advantage is his ability to switch between both an offensive and defensive role depending on the needs of the battle. He almost always starts a fight in the Bruiser role, but should the tides of the battles become unfavorable for the team, he is more than capable of going on the defensive and sliding into the Tank role.
In large-scale fights with many enemies, Raph is best utilized to draw the attention of the stronger enemies, getting them out of the way or distracting them, and allowing his team to better focus their attention on other enemies or the objective of the battle. This technically makes him act as both a bruiser and a Tank, taking advantage of several of Raph’s strengths at once.
Tumblr media
Raph is able to effectively hold his own against large groups of enemies as well. This is mostly done with the assistance of his mystic powers, which allows him to extend his reach by manipulating his mystic construct and performing a large sweep over the battlefield. This can also be used against singular enemies, but it becomes far less effective and efficient.
Tumblr media
How it Plays into His Character:
The way Raph fights, especially early on in the show, doesn't reveal too many things about his character, but it does do a good job of reinforcing and providing context to many of his character traits.
While the Bruiser is Raph’s preferred role in a fight, it isn’t always the best one for him to employ in certain situations. The bruiser role is most effective when fighting aggressively, but it still requires a bit of thought and flexibility, something Raph struggles with. His greatest weakness in battle is his tendency to rush into a battle with a single strategy in mind – smash. When he goes too hard into his Bruiser role by charging in without a plan, it is likely to work against him by making his attacks less effective or leaving him open to an enemy attack. It exposes Raph's difficulty in adjusting his tactics on the fly and reinforces why Raph wasn't the best fit for the leader of the Mad Dogs.
Tumblr media
Raph’s role as the bruiser also plays into a part of his character that Rise doesn’t focus on too much – his anger. In Rise, Raph is a kind, gentle soul who loves his brothers and family to the point where he hates being separated from them. As we go through the show, we see how Raph does have a tendency to get frustrated and hot-tempered, with the most obvious being in Part 3 of the Finale, but we only really see Raph's anger while he's fighting. Raph doesn’t hold back against his enemies and is shown to be more threatening and, dare I say it, angry at villains. Raph is never outright hostile towards his brothers (although he got pretty damn close with Leo in the movie), so we can infer that he gives himself a somewhat more productive outlet for his anger by directing it toward his enemies or protecting his family.
Raph’s role as the tank fits well with his protective, big-brother personality - he has a strong instinct to care for and defend his family, which is why he ends up becoming the Tank in battle. Raph ends up being the one to take on the stronger enemies not just because he is well suited to fight them, but so his team won’t have to. While he may tend to charge forward in a fight, Raph knows when he needs to fall back and protect his allies, quickly switching into a defensive position to help them.
Tumblr media
In a Team Battle:
In a coordinated team attack, Raph is well-suited to go either second or last as he can deliver a strong follow-up attack to weaken an enemy or deliver a powerful finishing blow. By going second, Raph can apply his aggressive fighting style by closing in on the enemy and dealing significant damage as a continuation of the previous attack. The same applies when Raph goes last in a team attack, as his overwhelming physical strength enhanced by his mystic powers can create a brutal combination than can hit the enemy with a devastating final attack. Which order he goes in depends on the situation and those he’s fighting with, but I would argue he is generally a better fit for going second in battle due to his attacks being more forceful than precise.
Raph doesn’t do well going first in a team fight due to his heavy fighting style and his single-minded strategies. When Raph goes in first, in only highlights his greatest weaknesses as a fighter (his tendency to rush in) while his great physical strength can actually be a detriment to a team attack. Raph’s punches tend to send people flying which makes it difficult for someone to follow up on if they have to cross the battlefield to deliver a second attack. His team ends up having to work around Raph’s fighting style, instead of with him.
I had a surprisingly hard time analyzing Raph's fighting style and role in a fight. His fighting style is admittedly, a little one-note, making it easy to identify, but hard to examine and break down. I wanted to do our sweet red boy justice and really explore why he fights the way that he does. Despite what his fighting style might initially suggest, he is far more than just a one-note character and Rise demonstrates that best in what Raph does in a fight, instead of just the way he fights.
Tumblr media
~-~-~
[TL;DR: Raph is an aggressive, heavy fighter that acts as the team's offensive Bruiser and defensive Tank and can switch between the two roles as the battle needs. The bruiser role fits with his tendency to rush in and aggressive attitude towards enemies, while the tank role plays into his protective big brother instincts.]
Thanks for reading through another long post. I hope you enjoyed it and that I did Raph's character justice. Mikey will be the next one I cover, so keep an eye out for that (probably tomorrow)!

thinking about how the bifurcation in the timeline still would have happened after leo was appointed leader when they were still kids. thinking about how much guilt he would have felt, knowing that his mistake caused the end of everything. thinking about how that guilt would have caused him to step back, so much so that his big brother and essentially his twin had to take up leadership to ensure that people were safe. knowing that it may have been a strong suit for raph with years of experience in it, but for donnie it was something he had to step into, despite not being accustomed to it, or maybe even wanting it. knowing it had to be for the greater good. knowing that leo must have felt so much guilt putting two of his brothers in that position because he felt like he couldn’t be trusted with it. knowing that donnie probably only took that position after raph was gone because he knew it would only hurt leo more to lead. knowing that leo only led because two of the most important people to him were dead, and he had to become the defacto leader, just because those who came before him weren’t there to do it anymore.
gah this fucking q&a!!!!! sobbing over it forever!!!! revealing that donnie was a resistance leader even before leo was was absolutely not on my bingo card for 2024

✨The Fashionista✨
Rise Ramblings #234
While watching “The Clothes Don’t Make The Turtle,” I noticed something.
Tumblr media
I found it interesting that Raph, Mikey, and Leo were content with Raph’s outfit choice until Donnie stated that he wasn’t “in love with it, ya’ know.”
Suddenly, Raph declares “I’m a disaster!” Albeit ridiculously endearing, it was a little strange to see his sudden shift from moderately content to absolute dissatisfaction. Huh…
Then, the disaster twins decide to help him out.
Tumblr media
Take a note of their outfit choices.
Raph tries on all of these fits and more.
Tumblr media
Donnie’s first choice is a mild “no.” Leo’s choice is a hard “NO.” (Not surprising, lol.) But then, the overwhelming consensus lands on Raph’s fourth outfit, which ended up being Donatello’s other pick for his brother.
Tumblr media
So, in summary, Raph tried on his personal choice for an outfit, of which they rejected. Then, ultimately, Donatello picked out an outfit for his brother, and that pick ended up being perfect. Hmm…
Then I noticed something else. In this episode, we never get a Donnie “curtain reveal” moment, to our disdain. I mean, Raph, Leo, and Mikey got to try on several different outfits in order to get their brothers' opinions before landing on that “perfect outfit, you know the one.” All of his brothers got to shine. Why not DonTron?
Tumblr media
Then it hit me.
The try-ons were to get their brothers' opinions and approval. And, for his brothers' choices, he was a major contributor in assisting them in pulling their looks together.
What if, bear with me, Donnie didn’t need the "curtain scene" because he was so confident in his fashion sense that he didn’t need to ask his brothers for help to pick out a great look.
…or they figured out how to break Hypno’s spell before he could get a “curtain reveal.” BUT STILL-
Look at his outfit choices in this episode. Some of his wardrobe changes were off-screen, but all of them were fire.

(I added the baseball cap pic because it makes me happy. I wish we'd seen more of that fit.)
To me, he makes some really smart choices for himself, pushing the envelope of what is expected and taking chances: an open collar with no tie for a “black tie” event, a beanie and spiked wristbands for their “gansta look,” no socks with loafers (a viral fashion trend that actually began in Africa) with old man slacks in his reclined pose. *muah* Chef’s kiss!
But Don’s fashion sense doesn’t just shine in this episode.
In “Reparin’ the Baron” the boys go to Draxum’s apartment. Leo and Donnie show up in some extra nice “Sunday Dinner” twin drip.
Tumblr media
The gold is in the details. Everything Leo is wearing, Donnie rocks its compliment: for Leo’s round collar, Donnie’s is angled, for Leo’s blue shirt, Donnie’s is white, For Leo’s light slacks, Donnie’s are dark. Blah blah blah. It’s so good!
Look at the winter fit in Snow Day.
Tumblr media
Again, Donnie is Leo’s perfect compliment. As a pair? Fire.
Donnie has “the eye.” I can go on and on with examples, but I’ve said all of that to say this…
Tumblr media
In the future, we see that Donatello’s technology had major pull in the resistance. He had drone ships patrolling the skies. He built and designed Leo’s arm, Casey’s chainsaw-hockey stick, and Casey's mask. The list goes on…
But, when Donatello from the past see’s Casey’s clothing from the future, he says this:
Tumblr media
We know about the “Genius Built” brand. We’ve seen that logo on all of his tech up to this point. But, here he didn’t just say “Genius Built.” He said, “Genius Built Apparel.”
“Apparel” is not a tech brand. “Apparel” is a fashion brand. Of course, tech is incorporated into the clothing, but still.
This means that past Donatello secured this trademark with plans of creating a fashion brand, comparable to the likes of Gucci, Ralph Lauren, or any other modern clothing brand, as a subsidiary of “Genius Built,” the tech company.
And why not? The evidence has been in front of us this entire time. He has a sharp eye for style, fashion, and trends. It is easily canon that he can sew. Splinter sewed their ninja garbs in “Insane in the Mama Train,” and there is a sewing machine in the house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They already learned Ninjutsu through basically osmosis, so learning to sew is not too far-fetched.
And here it is, right in front of us, Casey’s entire ensemble, from mask, to weapons, to clothing, was made by Donatello in the middle of the apocalypse under the brand name “Genius Built Apparel.”
Tumblr media
And that was just in the bad future. Resources were limited, they didn’t have access to much of anything in that broken world as they were survivors of a devastating Krang invasion. Yet, he created all of this.
However, now that they’ve changed the future, his future as a fashion designer is limitless. Think of what Donatello could produce with unlimited resources, unlimited technology, and unlimited creative freedom.
Tech genius. Clothing designer. Fashionista. Future Genius Built Apparel Owner and CEO. I’m sorry, but I have to call it...
Donatello Hamato of the present, of the bad future, and of the good future is a fashion icon, the likes of which the world has never seen. ○○○○
Update: I've decided to make this concept into a mini-comic series!

I feel like all the brothers abilities are weird but the reason draxum doesn’t really mention it when he sees it is because well war machine they’re bound to have some weird abilities:
Leo:from how it seems portaling with swords is incredibly rare and the people he does it in front of are literally used to his shenanigans like portals in general seem like more well hard to create that cutting into the space time continuum and don’t get me STARTED on his ability to use his swords as a landing pad literally moving through air
Mikey:chains I guess are normal infact his are the most normal the problem is the fucking level DIMENSIONAL PORTALS ARE NOT MADE WITH YOUR HANDS YOU CANT JUST DO THAT YOUR 15 AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON FUTURE MIKEYS ABILITIES-
Raph:cloning seems normal till you realize just how fucked up that really is like illusions so real that they can FIGHT that is a whole other skill and his projections don’t feel common like I expect every yokai who sees it being incredibly confused
Donnie:his ability… is tech… literally just…tech HE MAKES NUKES WITH HIS ABILITY HIS MYSTIC IS GUNS WHAT THE FUCK
any way that’s me talking about how fucked up thier abilities are and just how powerful they are!

One detail i love about rises character design is how the turtles masks visualy reprecent their responsability.
Like, Raph has a mask covering half of his head and has long mask tails. His is the biggest because he has the most pressure and responsibility. He looks like the responsible one and he is, even if it goes against his more silly nature.
Mikey is the opposite, a domino-style mask with short tails, he isn't responsible for anyone but himself. He appears carefree and he mostly is.
Donnies mask covers his (massive) head but has short mask tails. He does a lot of very obvious work and is responsible for the maintenence and security of the lair. Don seams like he's should be a voice of reason but he isn't. In their team dynamic he is far more chaotic and impulsive.
Leo has a domino mask with tails as long as Raphs. He's the face man. He acts reckless and overconfidant and unreliable because he's scared of being responsible for the people he cares about. He predends to be carefree but he has the braincell very often, telling his bros to not do dumb stuff and strategizing.
In short: the masks on their faces is how others view them/how they want to appear In terms of responsibility. The mask tails is the truth.

“The Color of Corruption - How Purple Is Used”
What I find interesting about this (”this” being how the color of “Purple” is tied to corruption in storytelling, meaning dark magic, malevolence etc.) and how it relates to Donnie and the themes of his character.
Tumblr media
(”Purple Dragons” have been called so in the original TMNT Mirage Comics, even before Donnie became “The Purple Brother”. “Purple” just being associated with “evil”.) Do you notice something about RISE Villains?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even most shots of the Krang are more purple than they are pink.
Tumblr media
But the Color Purple symbolizes not just “villainy”.
Tumblr media
Psychologically speaking, since purple is a rare color in nature its abundance means that something unnatural is happening. Its abundance feels threatening because “it gives the distinct sense of not belonging.” (Razbuten 2020)
But obviously, Donnie is not an evil character.
Tumblr media
His “malevolent” tendencies are never executed. Yes, he traqulized both Mikey and Raph, (which was inredibly irresponsible) but he did that in situations where they were surrounded by family and would be cared for by everyone present. Yes, he made a shock-collar for Leo and Leo got hurt, but Donnie also made the collar in a way that Leo could take it off again without Donnie’s help. It’s the difference between getting your head dunked in a toilet and getting waterboarded. He says he wants to go “semi-lethal” on his father, but he asks for permission. He could’ve just fired. But all it takes for him to stop is Leo telling him “No.” Out of all of them, Donnie has the weakest moral compass. But he cares deeply enough about his brothers, that it doesn’t impact his place in the story.
Tumblr media
Looking at it through that lens, Leo is more responsible that Donnie. I’ve noticed a trend with Leo being the one to “not let Donnie shine” the most. (I’m like, 99% sure Donnie would’ve already killed a man without him around.) And April as well! (Whenever Raph’s stopping Donnie it seems mostly for trying to keep Donnie out of harm’s way. Mikey tries to prevent emotional harm to and from Donnie, e.g. Shelldon’s restraining bolt.) Without his family, Donnie might be...
well.
Tumblr media
(Donnie says “I’m sorry” more often than Leo during the series by the way, always towards or because of his family.) What I love about this is this: Donnie claims to “never let things go” and Leo seems also able to hold a grudge for a while, but they forgive each other pretty easily. (All the brothers do.) To close it out: Yeah, Donnie is “the purple brother” and thematically he wears it well. He has the weakest morals, is incredibly destructive (emotionally as well as physically) but he does love his family above everything and his destructiveness is the strongest when it comes to protect them.
Tumblr media
(I love how, despite his manic rage here... purple is also a soft color.) (They really love each other, hehe.)

The thing about leo is that he's a lot smarter than he lets on and he KNOWS he's a lot smarter than he lets on. He does this because ppl assuming he's dumber than he is and underestimating him is a lot safer than letting ppl know how much he has sorted out in his head. The issue arises when he still wants to be credited for the smart work he does while avoiding ppl knowing he's smart. He wants to have his cake and eat it to. I actually think Splinter also falls under this category - which is letting his true strength and wit be hidden behind showmanship and apparent laziness.
The difference between Leo and Splinter is that Splinter KNOWS that if he wants to be underestimated he also has to deal with the emotional weight of ppl looking down on him. BUT although Splinter is more aware of it than Leo is - and thus more emotionally prepared for the burden on behalf of being older - Leo is Still a teenager, and doesn't have that emotional awareness and stability. And this isn't to say that Splinter has emotion stability, oh no*, because a good amount of Splinter getting underestimated is due to his own depression, however he is able to better come to terms with it.
It's also really neat to see how much Leo's arc mirrors Splinter's own teen years, specifically with how Leo hides behind quips and showmanship to hide his feelings of inadequacy - something you can see a LOT during Splinters childhood and how Splinter LITERALLY hid behind showmanship. Like the reason that Splinter is so much better at handling this underestimation burden is because He Has already gone through what Leo is currently going through. HOWEVER, this does not mean he's accurately processed it and thus that habit of hiding behind flashiness and pizzazz got passed down to his son. Which is funny, considering how Splinter basically raised the turtles off of his Lou Jitsu movies.
Like, to Splinter right, Lou Jitsu was his Peak. That's the guy who was prepared for any situation that's the guy who kicked ass that's the guy who saves the day. Lou Jitsu is the guy who lives up to All the pressures and standards that Splinter was put under growing up. Lou Jitsu is all the ways in which Splinter feels inadequate. He doesn't feel like he can live up to the golden standard that he once was, so he simply stops trying to live up to it. GOD I could analyze splinter all day you have no idea. BUT BASICALLY, staying on topic. Even though Splinter forgo raising the turtles in a typical fashion**, in a way he still raised them through his fucking Lou Jitsu movies. But he never TOLD the turtles that the guy in those movies was him. That's character is based off of what he once was but isn't anymore. (I'll get into that in another post probably.)
But by not telling his sons that the man they so looked up to was their own father - he opened up a door for him to once again be underestimated. Now this is for a lot of reasons a.) what I've already said above in Leo's case; it being the safer option b.) not wanting his sons to resent him for no longer being that cool bad ass guy (you're just a rat, we need a tiger) c.) fearing he won't live up to that standard - once again feeling inadequate. d.) being known as Lou Jitsu putting him and his sons in danger (most likely option.) and e.) more stuff that's off topic
It also becomes so clear how much his sons took from his example - how you can see, in this case, how Leo mirrors his father. It's just harder to see than in regular parent child relationships because *gestures.* It's also because of how much Leo has learned from Splinter, even in ways he can't see. Ultimately he learned the strategic advantage behind ppl expecting little of you from Splinter. Which lets be honest, is a whole nother issue in of itself but that's once again, off topic.
asterisks and citations:
* this emotional instability is shown by how much he clings onto that image of himself as Lou Jitsu, which is also to cope with his current reality which is transforming from this badass super hero into a rat. That's his character it's if what Splinter didn't get cooler because of his mutation and trauma, what if he just got sad. This sadness us also backed up from his history of feeling inadequate considering his LONG FAMILY BLOODLINE OF MYSTICAL NINJA WARRIORS. The pressure of being one of the last people in your family still living, of having to watch your mother leave you so young, of having the weight of the world on your shoulders since birth.
** this also ties into the above asterisk, in which Splinter is so lax with his sons and the severity of their destiny because of how he grew up. He didn't want to pass on that same weight and burden onto his sons, he wanted to give them a life where they could choose their own destiny, where they didn't have to grow up with the rigid household he grew up in. Of course he chalked up his unhappiness with his childhood To the Destiny and rigidness, and not to the fact that he never gained praise and positive affirmations or attention from his only living parental figure. The Hamato's chronic feelings of inadequacy is - say it with me now, generational trauma. Welcome to the Asian Household Good to have you
OH SHIT I REMEMBER NOW. Splinter is also a lot more Mature than what we see on a surface level considering how even till the literal very end of the world he STILL stuck by his ideals of protecting his kids and his family no matter the "greater good." He wasn't going to sacrifice his sons or their lives in order to protect the world because he would find a better way. Because he saw what the familial standard of sacrifice in the Hamato DID to the Hamato clan. He was one of the last Hamato for a long time!!!! The only other one was his grandpa !!! He watched his mom leave him and die to protect the greater good and what the movie is about is about BREAKING that chain of sacrifice because YOU DON'T NEED TO SACRIFICE YOURSELF. you need to TRUST THOSE AROUND YOU to get through it. A mindset that was completely lost upon the generations of the Hamato clan/family. Trusting your family was something that fundamentally conflicted with the Hamato because of their origins - and Splinter was SICK of it. and no amount of world ending would stop him from putting his sons first and *shakes you* ITS ABOUT GENERATIONAL TRAUMA !!!!! ok now that is all I think
