Villain Leo Animatic - Breakdown

⚠️TW: Violence, Blood, Guns, Themes of suicide, Attempted murder

The animatic takes place over a few years, starting from when Leo reveals himself to his brothers again after a 3 year absence (23 years old). It focuses on the tension between Leo and Donnie as time goes on, Leo’s resolve crumbling while Donnie slowly loses himself as well. In other words, who’s really the villain? This is going to be very long, let’s get 🔪started🔪

The Coin

Sue me if it wasn’t obvious, I will not figure out how to animate a coin flipping. But the circle motif shows throughout the video because they’re twins, two sides of the same coin. What happens to one, will happen to the other.

The Pupils

The pupils were a signifier of their current moral standing. White for “villain” and black for “hero”. It could also be seen as insanity vs. sanity. You’ll notice that by the end of it, Leo and Donnie have switched but I also want to point out where and why:

Donnie

After Leo left, Donnie spent all his energy going into finding him. He’s worried, he cares, he wants his brother back regardless if Leo has committed murder. He couldn’t find him, and it’s here that Leo reveals he’s been working with Kendra for all tech related support.

Donnie and Kendra’s relationship at this point is more of a rivalry. They have a respect for each other and as much as Donnie hates to admit it, he looks forward to seeing the inventive ways Kendra can get in his way. She’s been a constant in his life since a teenager. However, she’s been a constant “enemy”.

Donnie sees this as the biggest betrayal against him. His own brother willingly teaming up with his rival like that. Leo’s supposed to be on his side, and this is so uncharacteristic to Donnie that it’s at this moment he realizes he doesn’t Know Leo anymore. This is where he loses hope on bringing Leo back because the Leo he knew doesn’t exist.

Leo

The animatic takes place over a few years, roughly three. We haven’t publicly explored what’s going in these years but a quick summary of it is that Leo has been spiraling further and further since the start. Since the Kraang invasion actually. His goal has always been to protect his brothers, it’s simply that his method of it became extreme, he became obsessed with it.

At this point, it’s near the end. He’s tired, he’s been questioning his motives, he doesn’t know if it’s all worth it, in comparison to his desire to just be with his family again. He fights with Donnie and he’ll never use lethal force against him, but that’s not the case with Donnie. Donnie is doing everything in his power to kill Leo and when Leo realizes this, his first thought is “what has my brother turned into?”. It’s sobering, reality crushing, when he realizes his own twin desperately wants him dead. He gives up.

First Chorus

I wanted a moment that showcases a bit of Leo’s skills and personality. He’s clever, strategic, manipulative, and his strongest weapons are his words. He knows this. He’s a good actor and he’s a performer, all to show that that’s the villain aspect of him that he’s struggling with. It taunts him. Still, he believes the best way to protect his family is to eliminate all threats possible.

Donnie’s progression are the stages of grief he’s going through realizing his brother is “dead”. He watches recordings of their past to figure out where things went wrong, but also to grieve.

Time is a bit vague here and there’s quite a bit that isn’t shown here actually. Leo has cut ties with Kendra (that’s a whole separate thing and the result is that Donnie hates Leo even more). Donnie watches Leo through the cameras throughout the city. Leo knows he’s being watched, it’s bittersweet, he’s already having doubts during this time. Donnie, during this time, has decided to transform the Genius Built company and turn it into tech powerhouse. It used to be a side project, but now he’s utilizing it to take over power on topside in terms of technology and economy. This is a parallel to how by this time, Leo has near full power and control in the undercity crime rings.

The Bridge

Leo questions everything he’s doing as the past taunts him of how things used to be, of how things Should be. Also dives into his reason for all of it. The Kraang hurt the people he loves the most, as if they were worthless.

On Donnie’s side, he’s more and more determined to take Leo down with his own hands. That is his sole goal. Everything he is doing and creating is for that purpose. But his inner child, a part of him that wishes for things to just be ok again, is desperate for him to stop, to question things and think. Also he’s CEO of GB at this point. Pretty straightforward with the Leo is the person he hates the most but was once his beloved brother.

The Fight

Donnie using lethal force to do everything in his power to kill Leo. Leo is more skilled than Donnie is, he has more experience killing but he absolutely will not kill his brothers, that goes against everything he’s working for. Because of that, Leo is destined to lose this fight. He also loses his will to fight after seeing how much Donnie needs to kill him. While Raph was the first trigger of starting all of this, Donnie is the second trigger of making him give up.

Donnie won because Leo still loved him dearly.

“I’m glad it was you.”

Of all the people to kill him, he’s genuinely glad it’s Donnie who’ll do it.

On the other hand, Donnie recognizes the resignation in Leo’s eyes, but after the last few years, he can’t help but wonder if it’s another trick. He feels Leo’s ninpo, and he hasn’t felt it in a very long time. It’s nostalgic, it’s comforting, but he’s already come too far. “I must kill Leo” has cemented into his mind as a fact.

Parallels

I included these parallels because I wanna highlight that they’re “two sides of the same coin”. They’re twins and their fate are closely tied together. Leo will kill anyone to protect his family. Donnie will kill Leo to protect everyone, including his family.

Okay, I’ve been meaning to do this for a while but kept getting derailed. Thankfully I’m fully caught up on Rise (though it took me forever) and I was able to mostly sort out the in-universe order for the episodes.

Because fun fact-- something I noticed way back in season 1-- is that the episodes weren’t released in in-universe order. This was true on cable, this has held true on netflix and hbo-max paramount+ (I goofed, oops), and while [turtlepedia] does have them listed in tv broadcast order and has the episode production codes listed, neither of those entirely match up with the various in-episode context clues for what order things happen in.

And believe me, some of those context clues, those in-episode “signposts” are subtle enough to be blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details (like the fact that the background video for Donnie and Mikey in Hypno! Part Deux! implies that it’s happening at the same time as Repomantis). Needless to say it’s taken a lot of work and a lot of paying attention. And thankfully season 2 wasn’t as all over the place (mainly due to more of the episodes not having any distinct signposts beyond things that made it obvious they took place after season 1).

(I’ve done my best to get it as nailed down as possible. Episodes that occur at the same time are listed on the same bulletpoint in recommended watching order.)

Yandere! ROTTMNT! Leonardo vs Donatello

Short Concept

Pairing: Rivalry - Romantic/Platonic

Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Rivalry, Fighting, Competition, Jealousy, Forced affection, Obsession, Clingy behavior, Childish behavior, Manipulation, Delusional behavior, Overprotective behavior, Stalking mention.

These two share the clingy, overly affectionate, and manipulative traits with each other.

Which means, competition... oh so much competition.

They both get rather impulsive towards you and are easily jealous.

Sharing your attention is out of the question.

Leonardo feels he's entitled to your attention, willing to lie and fight to keep it on him.

He's one for the spotlight and is extremely competitive.

Especially if he's fighting with one of his brothers for your attention.

Then there's Donatello, bratty like Leo but much softer in the emotion department.

He plays himself up, using tech to impress you and gain your eyes on him.

Although he is still manipulative, clingy, and dramatic.

Even worse is they both can get so delusional about you.

They feel one of them is your favorite.

End of story.

It's a common sight for Raphael and Michelangelo to see Leonardo and Donatello start an argument.

Usually starts with something small, like what you did with them one day.

Then one tries to one up the other....

Now they're full out fighting because their beliefs of being your favorite are threatened.

You barely have time to breathe alone.

They try to impress you constantly.

It quickly gets annoying when you're dragged by either of them.

Both enjoy video games with you, but then there's a fight over which game or which turtle plays with you.

It's not new that they're both competitive.

It's just... it's always about you once they are fully into their obsession.

They'd both stalk you they'd both cling to you, they both want praise from you...

While you just wish you could be alone and away from them for once.

You can't even hang out with Raph or Mikey without them staring.

They'd watch from a distance, away from each other obviously-

Or they'd be very close to you while you're with someone else.

They're both your best friends, all of them are, although they're convinced only one of them are.

Donatello thinks he's the best choice due to his tech and intelligence.

Who else could protect you like he could?

Meanwhile Leonardo mocks Donatello, saying he could protect you with just a few waves of his weapon due to his portals.

A lot of the rivalry is bickering and petty competition.

To get them to work together again requires you or their brothers to snap them out of it.

You could say you care for them both the same...

Then they're still going to try to win your approval, just to feel special to you.

These two are relentless.

Attention is a drug to them that only you can give them.

If you don't, they'll force it.

Things like laying in your lap, forcing you to sit by them, surprise hugs....

Leonardo may be the most affectionate due to Donatello being more reserved with physical affection, although Donatello will boost his affection if you prefer it.

Keeping them behaved requires you to pay attention and not ignore them.

Although... when they fight so often now, you wonder if they'll ever get along again with you in their life.

At some point you will have to choose which is truly your favorite...

It'll either work out by then... or get worse.

It's a risk you're willing to take, right?

"Come on, (Y/N)? I gotta be your favorite! I've been training and I could take you anywhere with my portals!"

"Do you really think (Y/N) would be impressed with that? I have JETPACKS I tested that could take us anywhere! My tech is so much better than those portals of yours."

"It is not!"

"Yes it is, dude."

"Show me, then."

"Gladly. Come on, (Y/N). You're the judge here."

Power Crystal vs Power Turtle

"So this is your lab!" Donald looks around the small dimly-lit room. "Not many... power outlets?"

Donnie walks over to a pile of scraps and various parts in a box. "What? Yours is just as dim."

"Ha! It is not."

"Yes, it is, you just have neon lights everywhere."

"Yes, that light up the space."

"No, that make it look cool. But the light they provide is barely more than a phone screen, anything more than a foot away from them is completely unlit!"

"You sound like Raphie. 'Oh, Don, your eyes, you'll ruin them!' As though my Donnie-Tech contacts don't account for that."

"Well, we're a lot more used to dimness, I guess."

"... Deep inhale... I'm going to be a good person and not capitalize on that setup. What are you looking for?"

"The reason I asked you to come over to our dimension- AHA!" Donnie stands upright and turns around dramatically, holding out a pink-tinted and metal-capped cylinder. He's suddenly surrounded by rotating white-and-purple lines like fan blades as he proudly presents the item.

"... I have no idea what that is."

There's a disappointed "whap" sound, and the background behind Donnie disappears as he sags and scowls. "You could at least pretend, to be interested."

"Sorry, sorry. Ahem. OHMIGOSSSSHHHH! A PINK TUBE!!!" Donald clasps his hand together and stands on one foot, practically leaning over backwards in his exaggerated pose.

"Alright, alright!" Donnie walks over to a small metal table with a truly old computer monitor on it. "Just come over here. This, is an alien power crystal."

Now Donald's eyes do truly sparkle, and he dashes right up to the table. "What kind of alien?!"

"Our uh, squishy guys."

Donald loses his excitement. He slowly inches away from the crystal.

"It's harmless now," Donnie promises. "The Kraang haven't been seen- well, ours haven't-"

"Yours? But I thought-"

"There's one in a dimension perpetually stuck in the late Eighties we met recently, but he's an idiot and busy having marital issues with their version of Shredder."

"... Marital issues?"

"I wish that was the weirdest thing about that dimension... anyway, the point is there's no Kraang to track this, and no tech in this room that I haven't personally verified is safe. You know, relatively speaking."

"Ah, relative safety, my favorite kind. But why did you need me to come here for this?"

"I want to compare the energy this crystal outputs to the energy of your ninpo."

"... Is it because it's a similar color?"

"Wh- NO! ... Alright, maybe. BUT, that's not the only reason! I use a lot of Kraang tech in my inventions here in this dimension, and I've gotten prett-y familiar with most forms of terrestrial, foreign, or otherworldly energy through uh... various means."

Donald tries not to look at the electrical burn scars all over his counterpart's body. "So you're looking for some kind of commonality between them all?"

"Mmm, not exactly. I just want to note how they work in comparison with each other. Combining these various technologies can lead to incredible advancements, and that can lead to a lot less butt-kicking when new enemies show up."

"Well, this all sounds reasonable enough to me, let me just make a quick construct and-"

"Actually." Donnie pulls up a schematic on his monitor. "I was thinking more along the lines of this."

Donald leans in and squints. "You want me to... power things. Like a living battery."

"Well, I wouldn't have used those exact words."

"You realize using people as living batteries is usually a villain move!"

"It's not like I'm kidnapping you or want you to push your limits! I just want to see how the Shellraizer runs on this crystal versus your ninpo, and them maybe try out one or two other things a few, uh, dozen times-"

"I don't even think my ninpo works this way."

"What? Of course it does, I've seen you use it on practically all your tech! And I've seen videos of when you used your techbo!"

"Ha-ha! Ah, that wasn't ninpo. That was pure genius!"

"No it wasn't! I studied the properties of average electricity and other fuels and energies in your dimension, and there is clearly a mystical element to your tech!"

"I don't think there is."

"Donald, it's all purple. Even the fire. OBVIOUSLY IT'S MYSTIC!"

"Of course it's purple, all of my creations are! It's called branding!"

"It is purple... BECAUSE YOUR NINPO IS!"

"WHY DID THIS TURN INTO A SHOUTING MATCH!"

"OF COURSE IT DID, HAVE YOU MET ME?!?! YOUR NINPO IS PARTIALLY POWERING OVER HALF YOUR TECH!!!"

"PROVE IT!"

"FINE!" Donnie grabs the artifact off of his belt and reopens the portal. "Wait right here and don't touch anything!" He steps through.

Donald huffs, and begins snooping.

Lots of junk, lots of rusted items mixed in with unreasonably shiny chrome parts, lots of old schematics lying around. He picks up one that shows a stout android design, clearly modeled after the mutant turtles it would be surrounded by. It's a carefully preserved blueprint, and it makes Donald's heart ache.

Metalhead. Donnie has mentioned the incident, only briefly. A robotic son, lost in a fight. Just like his sweet Shelldon.

"Someday you'll both be rebuilt and can meet," he informs the blueprints. He carefully puts the blueprint away and looks around some more.

Some backpack-type devices with cable functions, clearly made for a mission of some sort based on the various implements to keep sound to a minimum, and one for each brother. There's some blueprints for various vehicles as well, a few various sensors, a box of incredibly small helmets labeled 'Spy Roach Gear' that Donald quickly puts away-

"AHHHHHH!" Donald jumps back as he looks up from the box and into a pair of disembodied eyes!

The eyes don't blink, flinch, or move at all. Donald takes in the whole... scene.

It's a large tube not unlike the one the crystal is in, but this one is filled with organs. Suspended in a frozen goo of some kind is an entire nervous system, alongside digestive and cardiovascular and... everything. A pair of lips hang suspended like the rest of the parts, attached by some kind of thin organic tube.

Donald makes a break for the portal.

Donnie steps out at the same time.

SLAM!

"OW! What the shell-!" Donnie gets up, a 2-D red vein popping up by his forehead. "What was that for?!"

"You have a pile of organs staring at you in your lab!" Donald holds his bo in a defensive position, ready to fight his way out.

"What?! You- ... oh." Donnie's eyes trail over to the tube. "No, that's not what he is."

"He?"

"He's a friend. or... I think of him as one. I don't know if he'd agree anymore." Donnie picks up the small device he'd brought over from Donald's lab.

"I've been told I struggle to grasp some societal nuances but-"

"He mutated, he lost his mind, he got frozen, and it's my fault, okay? And I'm working on figuring out how to unthaw him without hurting him or letting him loose so I can give him the retromutagen. But we're not working on that today, so drop it." Donnie holds up the device. "I'm proving to you right now that this is powered by your ninpo."

"Go ahead and try, but-"

"There." Donnie smirks as he hooks up the device to his ancient computer and types quickly on the equally ancient keyboard. "Right here, the readings match up."

"What? No. I made this when I was fourteen, it's impossible." Donald leans in to look, and his jaw drops.

"You were using your ninpo without even realizing it then. Which means... we can mix it with other technology! Think of everything we can create by combining all of this!"

Donald continues gaping. "I used my ninpo first?"

"Well, I don't really have a way to determi-"

"I WAS USING IT FIRST!" Donald cackles, picking Donnie up and jumping happily as Donnie screams. "HA! I NEED TO GO RUB THIS IN NARDO'S FACE IMMEDIATELY!"

"PUT ME DOWN FIRST- WHAAAAA!" Donnie screams as Donald uses his battleshell to absolutely blast off through the portal!

I've dreamed of Danny Phantom, Batman, and TMNT in a weird mash-up. Now I'm remembering the Batman and TMNT crossover and the moment where Batman tells Mickey to press all the buttons of the Batmobile.

This is Tucker. Bruce giving the go and Tucker unleashing havoc as he presses all of the Batmobile's buttons.

God yes.

Tucker would be in hog heaven if he got to sit in the passenger's seat of the Batmobile, especially since my version of it has like...actual buttons and dials and switches that make very pleasant sounds when you interact with them. The Primal Need to Push Every Button would be so hard to resist.

And it's funny that you mention the Teetles because I've got a RiseTMNT/Superman crossover in the works (part because I physically need to get it on paper or I will explode, part as a way of getting the writing juices flowing properly again for CiM). It's still very young but it involves college junior April scoring an internship at the Daily Planet and the chaos that follows.

I have plans to include a tease at the end where Clark gets a video call from Bruce because some weird reptilian meta-humans(?) are running around Gotham for some reason and have just broken into his Cave. You know that scene from Batman vs. TMNT where the Turtles are running around the Cave (well, mostly Mikey and Donnie) like kids in a candy store? This. This is exactly what it looks like. Except all of them are losing their goddamn minds.

April gets on the call because Donnie is physically vibrating with glee about how he correctly deduced Batman's identity (because you can't tell me he wouldn't in an instance where DC and ROTTMNT exist in the same universe. He doesn't go to school. He has to occupy his time growing up somehow) and he absolutely needs to call April to gloat. So he does and April calls Clark, awkwardly confessing that her little brothers are up to some Shenanigans in the Bat Cave--and yes, the little brothers in all but blood she mentioned are actually humanoid mutant turtle ninjas, they're harmless, she promises--and gets looped into the call. Cue indignant questioning from April as to why the boys are in New Jersey of all places and April demanding Leo make a portal so that they can all have the conversation in person rather than in a janky four-way video call XD

I'm just having a lot of fun imagining what Rise!April and Clark's dynamic would be like and have come to the conclusion that it would look something like this:

For the past three hours, Michelangelo Hamato has been unable to lay down and rest. Now you see, in the Hamato household, this wouldn't be a big issue! Mikey could just wander over to Raphael's train cart and cuddle under her blanket-like arms, no biggie. Except, it WAS a biggie.

Mikey, as tired and desperate for sleep as she is, is also restless. So restless in fact, that NOTHING satiates her need to do something. She tried painting, playing video games (calm ones! for your information, donnie!), watching cat videos, and even just meditating! MEDITATING! These truly were desperate times.

The only solution? Scream into a pillow.

"Uhhh... Mikester?" Leo's voice cuts through the screaming sesion.

Mikey bolts up, wide eyes staring straight at Leo, "Y-Yeah? Wussup Leo?"

"You uh," Leo gestures to the pillow, "You good there?" And what the hell was Mikey supposed to say to that?

'Nothing! LOLZ!' or maybe 'Ya'know how it be! Just a silly nightmare!' OR MAYBE 'It feels like my entire body is writhing to do something but nothing is the something my brain desires'

But all that comes out is a meek, "Not really..."

Leo's eyes soften at the confession. Letting out an affectionate sigh, he crosses the barrier into the orange one's train car, and holds out a hand.

"Turtle pile? Just you an' me, or all of us?" it's a quiet question.

"Yes please, all of us." and a quiet answer.

A pile of green limbs and multicolored blankets sit in front of the TV. Donnie is already snoring away, tired from their days work. Raph is curled up around his three younger siblings, a wall to the outside world. Mikey and Leo were the only ones with their eyes still open, watching the end credits scroll past the screen.

Leo was clearly on the verge of passing out, yet Mikey still sat restless.

"You can rest y'know," She whispered. Her head sat upon Leo's left shoulder, content.

"Nahhh," Leo starts before devolving into a yawn. He continues anyways, "I am just DYING to know who made all those special effects!

"The special effects cast were shown on screen like... 10 seconds ago Lee..."

"Hmm, I dunno what you're talkin' about Mikester! Last I saw, the camera crew were being shown."

"That's because that was the last time you had your eyes OPEN, dude."

Leo rolls his eyes, "Besides," he changes the subject. "I wanna keep you company, big guy. Don't want ya' to be lonely!"

Mikey smiles softly. Huffing a laugh, she leans more of her weight into Leo. "I don't think I'll be lonely, I have you guys with me."

Leo hums and closes his eyes. There's no need to answer with words. He reaches an arm over, and pulls his sister closer. It's warm.

"Ya' sure you'll be okay if I sleep?"

"I'll be okay."

And he knows she means it.

So I recently came across a post where someone was asking for advice writing fight scenes and all the advice basically boiled down to "watch a fight scene and describe it" and I just...

If anyone gives you this advice they either a) don't know how to write, b) don't know how to fight or c) both. It is terrible advice. You can watch Samo Hung Vs Donnie Yen in SPL frame by frame, memorising each move exactly, and it will not improve your writing one iota.

When a script calls for a fight scene, the script will say "then they fight." That's it. If you're lucky they will say "they fight through the room into the corridor" or "they use all the props in the room". Other than that the fight will either be worked out and rehearsed by the fight choreographer in pre-vis or (Hong Kong style) it will be worked out on the day by the actors/stunt fighters. This does not mean that the fights are ill thought out or no thought is given to characterisation but that on screen fights are not written the way prose is written. What you will learn is what looks good on screen, not what looks good on the page.

There are videos that will improve your understanding of the logistics of a fight and technical vocabulary. I would particularly recommend Scott Adkins YouTube channel for writers who want to write martial arts scenes. These will explain how each move works, what the body does and how one move flows into another. They will help you choreograph a scene that makes physical and logistical sense and that a fight choreographer could recreate.

And interviews with fight choreographers can also give you insight into how a fight can tell a story. How emphasis on certain moves or the flow of the fight can help tell a story or aid character progression. This too is very useful if you want your fight to serve your story instead of just exist within it.

But what none of these can do is tell you how to craft the prose of a fight. Simply writing the technical steps of a fight, blow by blow, is flat and dull. You would need pages and pages describing each shift of weight and tensing/relaxing of muscle just to describe three exchanges of blows. Regardless of how the flow of the fight serves the themes of your story, the pacing will be horrible and will bog readers down.

If you want to learn how to write good fight scenes then you have to *Read well written fight scenes*. There is no other way around it. A well written fight scene isn't simply legible and logistically sound. It isn't just a description of blow traded with blow that would look super spectacular on screen.

A well written fight scene knows which actions to emphasis and which to gloss over. It knows when to describe the physical and when to describe the mental process. A well written fight scene will weave the landscape into the fight, revealing new aspects as it develops (unlike a film where the landscape is almost always immediately apparent). A well written fight scene gives access to the innermost thoughts and feelings of the characters without disrupting the pacing of the scene. It will sweep you along and leave you gasping for breath when the final blow lands.

This cannot be learned though watching fight scenes, any more than you could learn to ride a bike by watching acrobats unicycle across a tight rope.

If you want to learn to write fight scenes, or any particular type of scene, you have to read examples of it done well. That's it. That's the best advice you're gonna get.

For fight scenes I would particularly recommend the Star Wars Darth Bane series. This short trilogy contains a range of sword, gun and battleship fights, all of which are amongst the most perfect fight scenes I have ever read. I don't care if you hate Star Wars or Disney or whatever. If you want to learn to write fight scenes, that's one of the best places you can start.

Writing is writing. It is not screen writing or play writing. Different things are different and the best way to learn how to do a thing is always to learn from the best examples of that thing.

What I’ve learned...

So IDW begins with a typical Powerpuff Story. They beat up Mojo, they beat up a monster, it turns out to be a golfer that went missing for decades. But interestingly, Mojo is rethinking his life. By the end of the first issue, he wants to be dosed in Chemical X. Second issue, Mojo is gone and Jojo is back. But HIM sees a prime opportunity to mess with the girls and decides that if they are willing to give second chances, let’s see them do so.

So HIM made all the remaining villains, Sedusa, Morbucks, Fuzzy and the Gangreen Gang, into good guys. The sad part is I really like them as good guys. Sedusa is back doing hair and being humorous. Fuzzy is fighting for our property. Morbucks is working with the girls. And all of them work together to beat up a giant monster. It’s just a shame HIM just turned them back to normal as quickly as he turned them good.

So HIM’s plan was to make the girls never trust everyone. All he did was cork their bad intentions and once loose, they went back to their natures. Hearing this, they decide to fight HIM for messing with them. But HIM was too powerful for them. It’s just a shame his Shadow Clones don't work on Bubbles because she has no deep darkness in her (even though she totally does). It also shows that Bubbles has an exclusive power outside language: light projecting.

Mojo is back and he sends a nuke down the volcano to basically wipe out the human race. The Girls stop it, but Mojo is in space for Plan B. Shame we never know unless it actually does lead to the Super Crossover Crisis. Monster Day has the girls fighting every monster from the Island in Townsville. All thanks to King Steve who was the monster who gave them the pep-talk when they were trying to find new hero identities. The Girls eventually won thanks to Bubbles showing she has the idea to reprogram Mojo’s Robots. Thus leading her to her computer language in the Reboot.

The series ended with a two parter where The Boogeyman works with Disco aliens while Viking Alien Boy Bands team up with both the Powerpuff Girls AND Rowdyruff Boys. And sadly Mojo’s Plan B was taken out since the series was ending. Overall, I do prefer this over the DC Series since it does feel like a modern take of the PPGs. And funny enough, a lot of stuff here actually comes up in the Reboot.

Super Secret Crisis War is pretty fun, but not really a lot of game changing Vs Stuff. I don’t think the Girls directly hit Vilgax or Aku. Though the thing that’s interesting is both Fosters and Dexter were referenced directly in the PPG Series, yet are treated as separate worlds in the crossover. Maybe those are specific variants. The other crossover I reviewed and like before nothing really that game changing... Except Mojo threatened to destroy the Multiverse and rebuild it!

Finally reading the reboot comics, and found one holding all the issues proper. Off the bat, Donny and Jared are going to be completely ignored. As much as I dislike Bellum for being overhyped, they’re objectively worse and boring respectively. So far, I think if you wanted more action from the girls the comics seem to be giving it to you. Just skip the second issue. Chicken Butts.

The Time Tie Miniseries is alright. Gives Mojo a Time Tie. Though the Bureau of Bad special is doing wonders. Already, it solidifies the scaling to Dexter’s Superhero stuff (and I did that already for Macho man) and it’s basically the best of both worlds. The story feels like the old school Powerpuffs but with the new designs and characters. And with that, all the comics for the Powerpuff Girls are done. Now, the video games as listed on Wiki (skipping the Browser Games because I doubt they got much).

Starting with Mojo Jojo's Clone Zone because I’m curious what kind of game it is for the PC. It's an educational game. But it introduced us to Mojo’s Psychic Shields, shields that protect his brain powered by his brain. So in theory, this means he can’t be mentally probed. But reveal his deep dark secrets (which aren’t that bad), and they’ll weaken.

Best Feat I found...

Mojo threatens to destroy and rebuild the Multiverse. Granted, it was mostly Dee Dee’s fault but Mojo took over and had everything set up to finish destroying and remake everything in his image. Second place is Mojo’s Tail being able to send the Powerpuff Girls flying through space. If Gal-Cactus didn’t stop them, they would be flying for almost 400 years.

Hey Mystics!

It’s been a while since I’ve last made a personal post.

School is literally starting tomorrow so any plans on writing are put on hiatus until, well, I post something that’s not a reblog.

For any of you who have followed me long enough, you would probably have noticed I have a lot of Donnie content reblogged. Donatello is my favorite turtle because he is so scrumptious-dili-icious and no one can tell me otherwise. I mean, LOOK AT HIM, his GODDAMN LEGS, his ARMS, and his FREAKING ILLEGALLY adorkable face. I swear, this man needs more hugs, kisses, coffee and cookies in his life than he knows it.

Anyways, I actually wanted to talk about a particular turtle. The Big Bara himself. Recently over the holidays, I have realized why he was my first turtle crush once getting to know more about him. Particularly the 2k12 version but the 2k14 and 2k16 would be a part of this as well… and 2k03.

So Raph’s anger comes from him being angry with the world and being angry with his own existence. You notice in both the Bayverse films, he and his brothers are referred to as “freaks” or as that police officer said, “monsters” (beat the hell out of the officer, I would). Anywho, I… could say I completely understand his anger.

To dive into how I understand, here’s what you know (if you’ve followed my posts): I have eczema, and with it I have asthma. As a kid and even as a young adult, I would rather have asthma and not have eczema. I think we could understand why. Eczema affects people on the inside, but mostly the outside. Asthma, that’s hidden, it only appears if something has irritated your airways. I remember being in second grade having my worst asthma attack and having to be hospitalized for three days. It was an ok visit, I got to play video games and watch movies at the hospital I stayed at. One thing I remember was my dad getting me a stuffed monkey (still have it) and I named it Red. Red was my ultimate favorite color as a child and it may not be my most favorite now, I can still say I can wear it and look ✨fantabulous✨

Anyways, ✨trauma✨ and stuff later entered my life and it still effects me today. I hold lots of anger and resentment towards a few people. Now, I wear my heart on my sleeve, some would say. I do my best to be kind, to give advice when asked for, etc. I also happen to be a giver, it’s my way of showing someone I care and respect them. So, as someone once told me, I’ve got a heart of gold.

I look very friendly and do my best to be friendly on the outside, but internally, I’m a pretty frustrated gal. I don’t understand why there are people who do things the way the do, or do just ridiculous stuff in general. I just don’t get people.

Now, I think that if I were to be friends with the boys, sure, Mikey would probably be the first friend to make, then Donnie, then Leo and/or Raph. But, I think Raph would be, like, the BESTEST friend. Shocking, like, what about Mikey?? Well, here’s why I think I Raph would be like, #1 bestie, vs Mikey. Raph and I are total opposites in appearances, and we definitely express our emotions differently. I try to verbalize how I’m feeling versus just showing it. Though funny enough, I still have a hard time communicating how I feel, much like Raph. We both wear our hearts on our sleeves, and we both value family probably the same way. I crochet to Raph’s knitting. Our anger comes from the harsh realities of our lives. I’ve lived in a different sort of isolation than what Raph’s used to, but isolation is isolation. I’ve gotten better with it now, but I would say I hated my appearance when I was younger, much like what Raph did.

No, I am not like, the female incarnation of Raph, I’m not motivated to work out like him. I can’t watch scary movies, I hate arguing with people/siblings, I am 4’ll and he’s 6’6 (I fact checked this just recently and it blew my mind), and I suppose I’m a pacifist since I would much rather talk than fight. When I am comfortable around people and trust them enough, I can become a Mikey… really depends on the conversation. I hide my anger as best as I can while Raph isn’t afraid of showing it.

Though, from my trauma, a wolf was created. It sat in it’s cage because I feared everyone’s words, their judgement. How it would hurt me if I hurt them. Now, I can say one wrong move, and the wolf is gonna come out for a little… bite. A nibble if I’m being polite but otherwise, a bite.

Anyways, I do think Raph and I would be the closest in friendship and could learn from each other. We’d talk about his favorite comics, debate how a hot cocoa ought to be made and presented. I love cooking so making large meals would probably make Raph ✨happy✨ If I want hugs/cuddles I’d go to Raph and (without anyone looking) Raph would seek me out for cuddles and hugs. I can imagine fun scenarios with him being the protective big brother and I’m the little sister he seems to keep losing around the lair.

Anywhizzle, that’s my post. Gotta get up for school and it’s 12:17 am where I’m at soooo… I hope this was a fun read. I’ll have to post a picture of Red at some point so everyone can see the influencer.

Please? All I've found so far is what we see in the donnieverse comic and the MVA/AMV (music video animatic/animatic music video). So many questions, like - is Casey (Sr) involved in any way, whethercas a fellow captive or rescue mission teammate? Is this the True Apocalypse or Averted Apocalypse timeline? If the latter, where is Casey (Jr)? How is Splinter handling it? (Is he even still alive to be Having Emotions About It?)

I don't really have much up for it, mostly b/c it deals with a lot of angsty material that i can be a little uneasy about posting. I have a bit of old concept art, and an unposted fic i'm editing/rewriting (b/c it's the first fic i wrote for Rise and i did not have those character voices down lol.) I can probably post the first bits of it later this week. I did say at one point that i would once 'proud family tradition' was over, and it now is.

but yeah, here's the concept art, i'll put the explanation under the break b/c i'm going to be rambling lol.

So Donnie vs. takes place after the thwarted apocalypse (not-apocalypse future). They get taken by Bishop a few months afterwards, and it isn't until about a year after that, that Donnie gets free.

He's the last one still with Bishop at that point, and had been told/convinced through various means that his brothers were dead.

Bishop did a lot of experiments on him, leaving a lot of scaring. One of which was injecting him with Krang DNA to see what would happen. (the eye and veins thing. I think he has some side effects from that but i'm not entirely certain what they are atm)

The fic itself starts after his rescue, b/c i'm focusing on Donnie's search for his brothers (and his own recovery) Rather than the traumatic event itself.

The rescue itself, was certainly a rescue. April, Casey, and CJ worked together to get him out of there as well as gain whatever information they could before they were found out. (Casey went undercover and was able to get some incomplete files and help get donnie out before she was discovered and had to leave.)

donnies in...pretty bad shape at that point, mentally and physically. Physically, he's malnurished, injured, scared, the works. Bishop did a number on him in the year he had him.

Mentally, he's pretty much shut down. He's completely non-verbal, unresponsive most of the time, when he does respond it's very slow and seemingly difficult for him to do so. He describes it that it feels like he's behind several plates of thick glass. He can see and hear what's happening, interacting (or even just feeling anything about it) is very hard to get past the glass.

How he goes from that state to hunting down his brothers is fairly simple. One of the broken, encripted files Casey acquired was Leo's file. None of the three could open it, but they managed to get Donnie to try to do so. He manages it, sees the file, and for the first time in about a year, has hope. He doesn't even wait to show the other three, he just takes off while no one was looking, with April's laptop and CJ's coat (he steals a backpack along the way.)

I don't really want to say much past that. A lot of the rescues/reunions are pretty spoiler heavy, and i don't want to ruin some of the mystery of what's going on in the fic. But know this, he does get all his brothers (and family in general) back. Also, splinter is alive and is part of this, but again, that's spoilers for some things i don't want to ruin.

Again, i'll probably start posting this sometime this week. It's an interesting fic that i've put quite a bit of time into at this point, so i'll be excited to see what is thought of it.

Hey I love your fics and writing style and well since I've been meaning to start writing fics I wanted to ask you if you have some advice you'd give.

Ohhh advice? Sure, I can do that! I shall bestow all of my knowledge upon you now, but you gotta look below the cut. Shhhh, it's a secret~

Okay really I just knew this was going to be a really long post and didn't want to clog up everyone's dash lol. ONTO WRITING ADVICE

I kind of live by these rules in writing:

1. Know the rules before you break them 2. ANYTHING can be inspiration 3. Remember the doll 4. Use your resources 5. Don’t hold yourself back 6. Practice 7. Enjoy yourself!!

1. Know the rules before you break them

Pay attention in English class (or whichever class for the language you're writing in) and learn the grammar!! I don't always have perfect grammar in my fics and sometimes I consciously choose to ignore grammar rules to make it more impactful, but you HAVE to know the rules before you break them. Study those grammar lessons! Learn how to use the fun punctuation, like semi colons and em dashes and en dashes and all that good stuff. I know they're scary, but they're a lot of fun too.

ALSO PLEASE USE PARAGRAPH BREAKS IM BEGGING that's like, a HUGE problem I see with a lot of new writers. Paragraph breaks are not optional!! Change 'em when the main topic of the paragraph switches or when a new character is speaking. Overdoing it with paragraph breaks is better than underdoing it, I promise.

2. ANYTHING can be inspiration

Have you ever played Story Cubes?

If you haven’t, it’s essentially this game where you roll the cubes, they each land on a different image, and you gotta tell a story that uses all of those pictures. Some are literally just a question mark or a speech bubble and that’s what you have to use. Me and my siblings used to play the game a lot. And you know what? Some of those stories are the most creative ones we’ve ever come up with. When I say anything can be inspiration for a story or a character, I mean ANYTHING!

I based my Donnie design off of the vintage globes and journals I have in my bedroom.

My little sister threw a pillow at me and it inspired a funny scene I wanted to write in another fic

I designed two OCs off of Mars and Pluto and an ENTIRE 40,000 word fanfiction based off of a space documentary I watched

My NaNoWriMo story last year was based off of the concept of shadows and how cool I thought it’d be if they could talk

Me and my friend made an entire dystopian original story commenting on our world today. It was first inspired by a crack self insert Death Note RP we had at 13 years old. Not kidding.

Literally anything can be inspiration. Challenge your mind!! The best ideas come out of completely ordinary and unexpected opportunities, in my experience. You don’t need one of those super detailed and crazy expensive prompt books (though they are fun) to write a great story. Use music, use a color, use the sky, use your favorite food, use anything! Just find inspiration!

3. Remember the Doll

Remember Mulan?

We never got to see the Huns destroy the village and we didn’t get to see them kill anyone there either. But by showing that doll there, the animators took an entire battle full of death and destruction and summed it all up in one, heartbreaking moment. You don’t need to spend ten pages writing about how horrifying the bad guy was and listing everything he did from start to finish, nor do you need to write an analysis on why she’s bad. All you need to do is show one or two very meaningful ways they impacted the world... and you can do that with something as simple as a doll lying on the ground in a burning village.

Because the doll is there; the little girl is not.

There’s a quote that sums this up really well, and I have it written on the dry erase board by my desk.

“You don't write about the horrors of war. No. You write about a kid's burnt socks lying in the road.” - Richard Price

And adding onto that, try to write more about what’s there, not what isn’t. Mulan didn’t say ANYTHING about the girl in that scene, but by showing what was there, it told us a story about what wasn’t. Focus on what is in the scene and it will tell your reader about what isn’t.

I do think writing a balance is good though, so I try and keep it around a 3/1 ratio of what is there vs what isn’t. Remember this is art though, not math; you can change the formula as you please just to make it feel right. It all depends on the scene and what you want.

4. Use Your Resources

You know how, in the artist community, there’s this sort of stigma around using references? And some artists have to make posts reminding others that there’s nothing wrong with using references and you even should use them?

It’s the same concept in writing!

There is NOTHING wrong with looking to other writers’ work or keep a thesaurus constantly open or bookmarking a reference page of other words to use than “said”. Nothing wrong with it at all! When I write, I always have two tabs open: my writing document and thesaurus.com. I have a folder on my computer bookmarks of ways to describe a smile and a body language dictionary. Before I write fanfic, I watch a “best moments of *character*” compilation video on Youtube to remind myself of how they speak. I watch fight scenes from The 100 or Avatar or Marvel while I write my own battles!

There are SO MANY resources out there for you to reference. Use them! And if you need some to start with, shoot me an ask. I have a ton.

5. Don’t Hold Yourself Back

One of the scariest parts of writing is the thought of “what will people think?” Creative writing is EXTREMELY personal, and you’re going to find a lot of you inside your work, including the thoughts you didn’t want anyone to know about.

People will discover how often you think about love. People will discover how dark your mind can get. People will discover the morals you hold that even you didn’t know about. They’ll discover that the person you swore you’ve moved on from is still on your mind. They’ll discover that the pain you swore you got over still hurts you.

This thought scared me a lot, and still does. I’ve let go of and forgotten about so many story ideas because they were just a little too personal. I could write it and not publish it, but what if someone still sees? Writing, like all art, comes right from the heart and reveals a lot about a person. That paranoia of being known kept me from writing so much.

But I promise you, your most powerful stories are going to be the most personal ones.

I wrote Hated Resemblance based on my thoughts about myself, and I wrote Dagger From the Mirror based on thoughts about myself too. A lot of it is dark, most is painful, and all of it is scary to show the world. But I wrote it anyways and it’s created something pretty amazing.

Hell, even now I’m wondering if I should post that lil anecdote, but I think it’s the best way to make this part of my point stronger. See? Writing about things that affect you is the best way to make them impactful, even for something as simple as advice.

And even if you want to write about light and happy stories- you’re still going to have to get personal.

This all got pretty deep but my point is this: Don’t hold yourself back. Write what you feel you need to and it don’t worry about what anyone will think. Don’t hide that one sentence because you’re scared who will read it because you’re scared to be known so deeply. Add it in even when it’s scary.

That’s something I’m still learning how to do, and it’s a slow process that has taken years... but it’s worth it, I promise.

6. Practice

I started writing in 1st grade. I’ve written regularly since then, and this is my word count every month this year:

Most of that is fanfiction. Some are just random thoughts, some are really thought out posts or answers to your questions, and some are made up of original stories. That total words written number is since November.

You don’t have to write this much every month, I promise, I just don’t really have any other hobbies lol. My point is that practice is really really really important. Write a paragraph or even just a sentence every day. You’re gonna improve so quickly, I promise.

But take breaks too!!! Don’t overwork yourself. Burn out is a real thing and you shouldn’t force yourself to write just because you’re scared you don’t write enough! Write at a pace that’s comfortable for you. There will always be writers out there who write more than you and even more writers who write less than you. That’s okay. Everyone has a pace they’re comfortable with, and you just gotta find yours. As long as you’re writing consistently, the numbers don’t matter too much. 50 words a day or 5000 are both good!

No matter what you’re writing (angst, romance, fix-it, AUs, hurt/comfort, fluff, ANYTHING), remember that fic writing is supposed to be fun!! You’re not getting paid to do this. On one hand, that sucks, but on the other hand it gives you the amazing opportunity to write literally whatever you want! Find projects you’re enthusiastic about, meet other writers, do collabs, make playlists for your story, create over powered OCs for the hell of it, ignore plot holes and write without regard to canon, or write the most realistic and in-depth canon-compliant book ever. Create the most self indulgent story you can think of!

Have fun. This is your story and you get to write the rules. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Be proud of yourself. You can get all of the comments and feedback in the world, but if you’re not proud of what you wrote, it’s gonna be hard to look back on it with joy. Be proud no matter how many reads it gets—you made it!

Thoughts on Apriltello Across the Animated TMNT Series

After watching the Rise of the TMNT episode “Donnie Vs Witch Town,” I’ve been wanting to chime in on this topic.

My big introduction to TMNT in general was the 2012 series, so I’ve kept a few tabs on Donnie and April in the 2003, 2012, and 2018 series. From what I can tell, there’s been more of a highlight on these two as each new animated series comes out. It just depends on how Donnie or April are set up and written in each one as to what kind of dynamic they share.

2003

In the 2003 series, April seems to be a few years older than the turtles. Over the course of the series, she becomes the older sister figure of the group. She and Splinter are the guardian/parental figures of the group in certain situations. The turtles are ready to deliver nosy sibling banter and jokes when she goes out with Casey. And she’s lived in the sewers with the turtles as often as they’ve taken temporary residence above her antique shop.

In combat situations or missions, April usually acts as back-up, filling the role of ongoing research assistant to the turtles when they’re out in the field. Or, for a better description, she serves a role similar to what the Oracle does with Batman.

In regards to her dynamic with Donnie in specific, I’d say that they’re best friends and lab partners. They share strong mutual interests in science and technology. They even collaborate often enough to where Donnie has commented on how valuable her feedback is to him.

There’s one scene in particular where Donnie gets excited after April makes the comment “I could kiss you!” after he steps in and tries to rescue her. This is a one-off scene, though. April’s romantic interest is focused on Casey. And Donnie never expresses interest in trying to make any moves or pursuing any kind of romantic relationship. I think Donnie would go for it if April showed genuine interest. Otherwise, he’s satisfied being just friends.

2012

In the 2012 series, April is fifteen; the same age as all four turtles. She’s a friend, confidant, fellow kunoichi, and an adoptive member of their family.

Donnie is smitten with April from the moment he sees her and his infatuation grows deeper over the course of the series. His feelings are painfully obvious, he can get overbearing with his attempts to flirt with or impress April, and he can come across as clingy and creepy. He places April on a pedestal to the point that he can’t relax around her enough to get to know her as a three dimensional person rather than an idealized love interest.

One episode shows Donnie developing enough self awareness to approach April and tell her he’ll be better about giving her space. But it doesn’t really stick. Or, more specifically, there aren’t any other significant scenes or moments that show a deliberate shift in Donnie’s behavior or his dynamic with April.

On April’s part, she likes Donnie well enough. He’s her favorite turtle and she’s been openly affectionate in expressing her gratitude or fondness towards him. She appreciates him going out of his way to help her and her dad. The largest problem is the lack of communication. Donnie and April don’t really share their feelings well: Donnie is too forceful and can’t read the room where April seems reluctant to outright address Donnie’s feelings for fear of hurting him or otherwise.

It’s dubious how much Donnie and April have in common, too. Science and technology are the center of Donnie’s life. Sometimes, April calls one of his inventions “cool,” but there’s also been a scene where she looked bored to tears as he was describing one of his latest inventions. Donnie and April watch TV together in a big group, but there’s little to no hints at mutual interests they share or activities they’d exclusively do together.

Compare Donnie and April with Casey and April. Casey and April share chemistry from their first scene onward. He has just the right amount of self-confidence and awareness that his flirting is cool and casual. They’re comfortable around each other. April openly flirts back, banters, and has fun with Casey. She even uses “date with Casey” as a plausible cover for her outings with the group at large. If April did start up a committed romantic relationship with any character, Casey would be the most likely choice. It’d just take a couple of scenes where they had a more meaningful stare, kiss, whatever. In short, the groundwork was there. Casey and April have exactly what Donnie and April lack in more casual settings and situations.

There’s hints that Donnie and April are together in the last season. Because of how big a part Donnie’s crush on April is to his character, I’m not keen on hand-waving that all of that development happened off-screen. When romantic relationships contribute to a character’s growth or writing in a significant way, I want to see what leads up to that and how it impacts that character.

As a concept, I think Donnie’s intense crush is an interesting setup and painfully relatable. The way he acts is believable and accurate to what a lovesick socially awkward nerd can be like. But I wanted to see Donnie back off and actively work on how he acts around April. As in, he catches himself before he makes yet another awkward gift or unwanted over-the-top gesture. For me, the ideal end result would be an organic, gradual shift towards Donnie developing a healthy friendship with April.

2018

In the 2018 series, April is sixteen. According to the ages listed in the fan wiki, she’s a year older than Donnie. She’s considered part of the family to the point Splinter coaches her as much as his own kids and makes a point of wanting to meet her parents. She’s good friends with all of the turtles and it’s implied she hung out exclusively with them until she met Sunida.

But Donnie is definitely her best friend. He’s the first one she calls for help with tech related issues. They have the same taste in Jupiter Jim movies and video games. And Donnie designed part of his metal shell to accommodate April if they travel by air. There’s also a handful of episodes that specifically follow Donnie and April; and these two are the most likely dynamic duo to star in a one-off episode out of the main cast.

Unlike the 2003 and 2012 series, there’s plenty of scenes and dialogue to articulate what kind of dynamic these two share. They’re visibly comfortable around each other, share fantastic chemistry, and have complementary personalities. Donnie is snarky, arrogant, and puts on a front to mask his insecurities or doubts. He doubles down unless someone pulls him aside and talks things out. More often than not, April’s willingness to be blunt and no-nonsense helps reign him in. Where Donnie helps April troubleshoot tech, she keeps him grounded.

These two have a solid enough dynamic that a friends to lovers setup could play out in a satisfying, well done way; as long as they still had the same open communication anyway. That said, though, I prefer them as just friends in canon. They’re one of the better guy and girl friendships I’ve seen in a more comedy-centric episodic cartoon in awhile (after Rad and Enid in O.K. K.O.).

Conclusion

Rise of the TMNT has the best Donnie and April dynamic in my opinion.

It pretty much boils down to Rise giving characters individual attention and writing as well as Rise knowing exactly how this take on Donnie and April works, how they fit, and why they fit. The 2003 series was more focused on telling a grand, ongoing adventure than much emphasis on the characters themselves. There just wasn’t as much of Donnie and April highlighted in the ’03 series as there is in Rise. The 2012 series was bogged down with enough exec mandates and other writing issues that Donnie and April probably got sidelined in favor of other plot points and character writing. It needed more time and focus to feel more fleshed out and cohesive than it turned out.

I used to write long, rambly takes called The Shipping Corner on why I thought Character A was a good fit for Character B. When I’d sit down to cobble something together, I felt like I had my best results if I could unpack why a character acted a certain way and articulate how the other character fit into or impacted their life. If given a week or so, I think I could write up a Shipping Corner for Donnie and April in Rise. I don’t think I could write one for them in the 2012 TMNT.

It’s been a few years, but The Shipping Corner still determines some parts and pieces of my shipping interests or even how I analyze some characters.
