It unusual for the two to fight.
They weren't a couple who participated in pointless power struggles or irrational debates, just occasionally get annoyed with one another, if that.
It was unfortunate that one of their first major argument was occuring when they had so many exciting events happening in their lives.
College graduation was looming over them, after months of studying for exams, it was nearly time to take the finals.
Harry wasn't concerned about studying, finals weren't important to him, not with the draft ceremony only two days away.
YN had never seen Harry so high-strung or stressed out - he was usually very carefree and not worried about a single thing enough to make him on edge like he has been for the past few weeks.
His nose wasn't buried deep in his textbook for sports management, no, it was constantly on his phone to read articles and watch videos about the upcoming event and experts opinion on who was going to be first pick.
YN was not quite sure why he was so anxious, nearly 99.9% of predictions were that he was going to be the first choice.
It wasn't a secret he was already to be predicted to be one of the best players of all time, of course he was going to be picked first - any team would be idiotic not too.
It was the pressure that Harry was getting from every aspect of his life, his coaches, teammates, and the media.
The most upsetting part of this was that Harry had become so overly stressed out and pressured that he was drawn thin - he was constantly between working out, practicing, photoshoots, and interviews for ESPN and Sports Center.
YN can't remember the last time that he had gotten more than four hours of sleep, other than their 'date night' which was a evening they set baseball and studying aside to watch a movie with the promise of sex afterwards - especially because that wasn't happening quite as much with how exhausted Harry was.
However, not even fifteen minutes into the movie, he had his head tucked into the crook of YN's neck and was snoring softly with his shower-fluffy hair tickling her cheek.
She couldn't be upset because she knew how tired he must be, especially if he turned down sex because that had literally never happened before.
It wasn't anything they couldn't manage together, they tried to end up at least sleeping in the same bed at the end of the night - almost exclusively at the frat.
It wasn't until a day before they was going to fly from North Carolina to Miami for the ceremony and following festivities that things started to go wrong.
YN had three, yes, three final papers plus an article for a journalism class. The other two of her classes were comprehensive exams that took a lot of studying of all the information they learned in a semester.
Not to mention the journalism article that had been taking endless hours of research, interviews, and deep diving into archives of the library to get done.
It was always planned that YN would go with him, of course she would, he wouldn't rather have anyone else there to support him.
Not to be dramatic, but Harry knew that he would be marrying YN after the second date, it was just a matter of time before he bought her a ring.
He actually already had a plan of how he was going to propose.
After his first game in the major leagues, he would bring her out onto the field, just the two of them, and get down on one knee - fireworks lighting the sky right afterwards.
But plans rarely turn out that way.
YN had just stayed up for nearly sixteen hours straight, switching between studying flashcards and typing away viciously at one of the many papers.
Her lids were heavy, making it more difficult to blink at the bright screen, her stomach was in knots so she hadn't eaten recently.
Harry had been at a meeting with his management team, there was a lot of coordination that went into making sure everything went smoothly.
It had been an itching thought in the back of her mind that she wasn't possibly going to be able to go to Miami, not with everything due but she was still praying she could get it done.
Then that dream was obliterated into tiny, nonrepairable shards when her laptop died - unexpectedly.
She hadn't realized that the charger was not pushed in enough to provide the power to do so, which meant that she had just lost nearly four hours of work that her groggy mind had not saved.
Still hopeful, she quickly plugs it back in and pulls up her document again - only to be confronted with the thousands of words she was missing from her writing.
Fuck.
YN can't do anything for a moment but let her head drop in her hands and internally scream at the situation.
Tears build up from the frustration, the disappointment, but also the realization that she is definitely not going to be able to go to Miami.
Harry had been so excited, he'd been talking about bringing YN with him since they first started dating - over two years ago.
She knew he had set up dinner reservations, a couples massage, went out of his way to make this special for her despite the fact that the trip was supposed to be for him.
YN knew she needed to prioritize her education, she knew that Harry was her soulmate and she hoped they would get married soon but nothing in life was guaranteed.
She didn't work hard all of her life to get a good education just to be a trophy wife, she needed to be able to support herself if she had to be on her own.
Harry had also been on edge even more so than lately and YN knew this news wasn't going to make the situation any better.
The night unfortunately does not go any better after this.
Harry opens the door to her dorm room, his hair is damp from a locker room shower and his shirt is sticking to his skin from putting it on before he was completely dried off.
He had his practice duffel over his shoulder and an annoyed expression decorating his face, not the usual puppy dog excitement when he sees her after a long day.
"Why are you here?" Harry asks abruptly, voice rough from a long day of yelling - he doesn't drop his bag or make any effort to make himself comfortable.
YN looks at him, perplexed, why wouldn't she be in her own dorm room?
He sees the confusion on her face, huffing out like he's impatient he has to explain it to her, "I texted you like six times to meet me at the frat. I'm tired and don't want to sleep on your tiny bed. C'mon."
She didn't appreciate the attitude that was interwoven between his words.
She could understand and appreciate that he was stressed up but it didn't mean she had to put up with the backlash of it.
"I can't tonight, H. My computer died and I lost almost an entire essay that is due," YN explains, pushing back her chair from the desk so she can spin around and cross her arms to let him know that she meant business.
"Just come do it at the frat," Harry states, like it's the obvious solution, "I'm tired and I'm not tryin' to have a back and forth with you."
YN's eye bug at him in disbelief, scoffing as she says,"Then sleep by yourself tonight. It's too insane to concentrate over at the frat. I need to get this done."
"We need to talk about the trip," Harry replies, his tongue kissing the back of his teeth, "Figure out the details."
She takes a deep breath, it's not ideal to tell him right now when he's already crabby but she didn't want the guilt weighing on her for any longer than necessary.
"I'm not going to be able to go," YN's voice softened, tears prickling at the corner of her eyes as she looks down at her feet to avoid the hurt flashing across his face.
"What?" Harry drops his bag and strides over, he kneels in front of her, finger coming under her chin so he can make eye contact, "Darling, I've been a bit short lately. I'm just-"
She stops him with her finger brushing against his plush lips, "It has nothing to do with that. I just don't have enough time to finish all these finals if I go this weekend. I have to put school first."
Harry's eyes narrow, nearly into slits as he processes what she's telling him, pushing back to stand up, "I want you to come with me."
"I want to finish my college degree that I worked my ass off for," YN bites back, tears boiling over as anger sweeps through her body at his stubbornness.
"Why are you acting like you're going to actually need to work?" Harry asks in true bewilderment, "I'm estimated to be the highest paid player ever and this is what you're worried about?"
YN grinds her teeth because he is being so fucking obtuse right now, "I need my own livelihood, incase things dont work out. I'm not saying they won't but I need to be able to stand on my own."
"What the fuck are you even talkin' about?" He replies with more frustration than she's ever heard out of him off-field, "You know we're going to be together. I'll always support you, even if something happens."
YN throws her hands up in agitation, "I can't believe that you're being so dense. You care more about me attending this event than graduating from college. Do you even hear yourself?"
"Do you just not want to go?" Harry accuses as he stands back up and straightens his back - rigid and cold, "You should have been more responsible and had them done by now. Not acting surprised when they're due. You've known about Miami since last summer."
"I am so supportive of you, literally even second of the day. I don't appreciate your lack of understanding about this," YN tells him, trembling with a mixture of agitation and desperation for him to understand.
"Because I need you there with me!" Harry booms, louder than he's ever been with her, "I don't understand how you can't bloody see it! I literally planned three days of shit for us to do afterwards from massages to rooftop dinners and you're now refusing to go because a fucking essays you poorly prepared for."
A sense of guilt starts to sink into her stomach.
Even though she was angry at him for the way he's reacting to the news, she understands how much he must be hurting that she isn't going with him.
"Harry, your mom and Gemma are going. It's not like you'll be going alone," YN tries to remind him but his jaw is clenched and eyes fiery - past the point of conversation or reasoning.
"Right. Well fuck me for wanting the woman I want to spend my life by my side during the most improtant night of my life," He replies with a disgusting amount of sarcarsm laced through his words.
"You're being unreas-" She tries to argue but is cut off by his loud tone again.
"You know what. Have fun writing your essays. I'll see you when I get back from Miami," He cuts her off before slinging his duffel back over his shoulder and heading towards the door.
YN has tears streaming down her cheeks as she watches her boyfriend.
He glances back at her before leaving, reminding her, "I love you, more than anything but right now I am so fucking furious with you."
And then the door shuts louder than necessary.
YN finds herself wiping her cheeks with the sleeve of her sweatshirt constantly through the night as she trudges through the essays.
She half expects Harry to come back, apologize and just hold her for a bit, maybe even a text message but nothing comes and that's how she knows he's more angry with her than he's ever been.
Miami was only a day away and her heart shattered when she realized that Harry had no plans on seeing her that day before he left.
YN ends up drifting off to sleep with her head resting in her arms at her desk, only barely conscious at some point to move to her small bed.
Harry is always the first one to text in the morning because he's always up the earliest because of his beginning of day workouts.
When YN rouses from her sleep, disoriented and just feeling off, out of habit she grabs her phone to text her boyfriend - realizing that he hadn't sent her one.
A wave of nausea hit her at that moment, having her flee from her bed to the bathroom to empty her stomach into the toilet bowl.
She stays there for at least fifteen minutes, trying to breathe through the turning of her stomach.
It ebbs after awhile, allowing YN to jump in the shower and clean herself up, she just felt absolutely awful - emotionally and physically.
YN chalked it up to the stress, the fighting, the amount of work she still had sitting ahead of her at laptop.
Throughout the day, YN checks on Harry through their 'Find My Friends', he's busy from his location changing to the stadium, gym, across town at his manager's office, talking to scouts, and she knows he's not purposely ignoring her except for via phone.
YN found herself running to the bathroom once more around noon due to her stomach just churning but she figured that the stress of everything was really getting to her.
Quite a few mornings over the past week and half, she'd been waking up with an upset stomach because of all the pressure of the semester coming to an end.
Since then, she'd been cautiously sipping on a ginger ale and trying to get her nerves under control so that it didn't happen again.
She can't lie and say that she isn't constantly checking her phone to see if Harry has texted her or called - she would be shocked if he actually left for Florida without another word to her, that would be too out of character for him.
And she's right.
It's nearly nine at night, her bum hurts from being sat at her desk for the whole day and there's still so much more work to do.
There's a knock at her door, a bit harsh, and she knows exactly that it's her annoyed boyfriend.
YN gets up to unlock the door, she's relieved because she thinks that he's forgiven her and he finally understands why she can't go.
Instead when she swings open the door, Harry who looks dead on his feet doesn't make a move to come in - his shoulders are broad and tense, he looks unhappy.
"Hi," YN starts but doesn't get her full greeting out before being interrupted.
"Did you finish all your work?" Harry asks bluntly, raspy and sharp, "It shouldn't have taken you more than the day, right?"
"H," She replies softly, "I'm sorry, baby. I really really am. I just can't go. It’s not all going to be done by tonight.”
Harry swallows harshly, jaw flexing as he processes her words, "I can't believe you. You know how important this is to me, how important you are to me. Can't believe you're really fuckin' doing this to me."
YN has never seen Harry this upset with her.
Sure, she sees him rage and act like an absolute nightmare on the field but when it came to them - they'd really fought, sure they got annoyed with each other but not like this.
"Harry, you're acting like I am purposely not wanting to go!" YN exclaims with a tinge of fire, her tone raising just the slightest at the offense.
"You know what, have fun with your papers. I'm glad that all your stuff is so much more important than me," He bites back, his eyes are livid and his voice is louder than hers now.
"Yes, I am so sorry I think it's more important to graduate college than go to Flroida for a weekend," YN replies sarcastically, her hand squeezing the doorknob.
"You bloody know I'm going to be first round pick! You fuckin' know I'll be making so much money I won't ever have to worry. Neither will you because it will be your money too!" Harry huffs out, his anger rising as his neck starts to flush pink.
"It's not just about money, H. I'm not going to stand here and argue with you. You're being unreasonable," She shakes her head, truly though, she justs wants to give him a hug and tell him she's sorry for letting him down.
Harry just stares at her for a moment, deciding his next words before saying, "I'm being unreasonable? I think it's pretty fuckin' reasonable why I'm upset but you've made up your mind apparently. Have a great weekend."
The last sentence was coated in a fake happiness before he's pushing off the doorframe and turning on his heel.
YN slams the door to get across the point that she's not in the wrong and she's just as angry with him.
When she finally shuts her laptop screen, it's late and she has a headache - she misses her boyfriend because this is the longest they've went without talking and she just wanted to sleep in the same bed as him.
But they’re both stubborn, she isn't going to fold on this one because she knows she is making the right choice for herself.
YN can't believe she forgot to set an alarm because when she finally blinks her eyes open - the now familiar nauseous rolling through her, it's nearly noon.
Harry would already be in Miami, getting his tailored suit on, and nearly ready to head towards the stadium for the event with his mother and sister.
As for YN, she's hunched over the toilet before she can even move to open her laptop to start her next paper.
When the pains in her stomach subside, over dry heaving due to her not even eating anything yesterday - she opens the lid of her laptop to finish her final paper for Sports & Media Journalism.
She opens another tab on her browser to pull up ESPN live television to watch the coverage on the draft pick - she wasn't going to miss watching Harry just because she was cross with him.
When she finds what she's looking for, she hits her volume as an advertisement plays across the screen for leak-proof tampons.
Her stomach sinks clear into the floor of her dorm room because something clicks inside her head that she hasn't had hers yet this month and she has been nauseous most mornings.
There's no way.
Is there?
Actually, maybe.
Now that she thinks back to about two months ago.
-
YN had usually taken her birth control pills religiously- rarely ever missed one or forgot to set an alarm to take it.
However, it was spring break and they were staying at Anne's house for nearly a week and they were both admittedly lax.
Harry and her had been sleeping in until mid-morning, sometimes into the afternoon, and lazing around by the pool or cuddled up watching movies.
It was a rare time he got a break from baseball.
YN usually took her pill as soon as she got up in the morning but sleeping in with her warm, sleep-soft boyfriend who wrapped himself around her like a vine was much more tempting than an alarm clock.
She knew better but hadn't thought much of it when she took her pills later than normal that whole week, notably forgetting to take them one of the days they were there and not realizing until they got home.
It didn't seem like a big deal at the time.
And YN knows exactly which time may had got her pregnant - if she was.
YN meant to remind Harry to pull out, he normally didn't have to because she was so responsible with the pill.
She meant to let him know that he should because she hadn't been that week and she should probably get back on track before he does.
It was the night they got home from Anne's, in Harry's frat bedroom because despite how horny Harry had been that whole week - the house was entirely too small for them to have sneaky sex.
The walls were thin, Anne's room was right next to theirs, and the room Gemma was in was on the other side - blocking them in.
The bedroom door didn't have a lock and had a tendency to drift open if there was a draft in the house.
Harry pouted like a little boy the whole time, begging YN to sneak into the bathroom with him or "Please baby, just give me your mouth."
But Harry can't shut up when he's receiving any kind of pleasure and the last thing YN wanted to do was get caught by his mother or sister in the act.
And so, when they got home from Anne's, Harry had carried their suitcases up to his room in the frat, taking the stairs by two in his haste - it was on.
As soon as they both were in his bedroom, he slammed the door shut so hard that the wood was trembling against its post and the metal of the doorknob was shaking in protest.
Harry lifted YN up, making her squeak in surprise as he sat her on his dresser - his lips capturing hers and his tongue pushing into her mouth without the patience to ask permission.
His hands were everywhere, acting like he's fucking starving as he barely breaks their kiss to yank her shirt and bra off of her, none to gently.
"Missed this perfect fuckin' body," Harry growled under his breathe as he roughly cups her breasts to bring to his mouth where he begins to nip and suck on her hardening nipples.
"Shit, H. It's only been a week," She giggles breathily as she yanks at the roots of his hair - making him moan through the sharp pain - slicking up her chest with his tongue.
"Need you everyday though," He emphasized as he pulls back to admire the marks he was leaving all over the softness of her breasts, "S'never enough, got the best cunt I've ever had."
YN gives his curls one more tug, enough his head bends a bit as she posessively murmurs, "Only one you've ever had, you brat."
Harry looks up from her tits with a toothy smile and sugary soft eyes as he presses their lips back together, "Yeah, yeah it is. S'cause you're my person, right? Been waiting my whole life to give it you."
"Don't have to charm me, already got me. C'mon," YN rolls her eyes, bringing their lips back together as his fingers curl into the waistband of her yoga pants and begin to pull them down - kneeling as he goes, lips trailing down her belly until she’s moaning with satisfaction as he licks up her center.
-
YN remembers only realizing they shouldn't have done that after the fact, when they're already in the shower cleaning themselves up.
She had brushed it off because she thought the likelihood of something happening was so low - she is starting to think that she is poorly mistaken.
YN doesn't realize that she is physically trembling until she's jolted from her stupor by Harry's name being announced over the speakers of her laptop.
She had zoned out, missed his whole introduction because when she looks back at the computer screen, she sees her devastatingly handsome boyfriend shaking hands with a few men before being handed a New York Yankees jersey.
Holy shit.
As she watches him accept his new team, his life is changed, he is moving forward to be successful as expected - he’s smiling widely on the screen, eyes twinkling, and they cut to Gemma and Anne tearful with pride for him.
YN was struck with fear that she just ruined something for him, scratch that not just something, she’s just ruined everything for him.
They were so so young.
Just starting their lives as adults and they were only twenty!
She had a mixture of confusing emotions stirring in her belly but before she tried to delve into those, she knew she shouldn't get ahead of herself before she took a test.
In her haze, she leaves her phone at home when she heads out to go to the drugstore - she picks one further off campus in hopes of no one paying any mind to her.
However, as she tucks the boxes into the crook of her arm, she hears someone calling her name and she freezes in surprise.
Niall is jogging up to her, a smile wide on his face, "Thought you'd be in Florida. New York Yankees, huh?"
He takes in her deer-in-headlights expression before his eyes dart down to the boxes that boldy indicate what they are and his eyes dart back up quickly.
"Please," YN whispers, feeling tears pool up in her eyes, she really didn't want to cry but she felt like this couldn't get worse, "I'm going to tell him bu-"
Niall cuts her off, his face soft and concerned, hand coming to her shoulder, "Hey, no tears, yeah? M'not gonna tell. It's your business, not anyone elses. Do you need anything?"
YN smiles watery, she loved Niall, he was such a good friend to both of them but she shakes her head and he tags along without asking any questions when she goes to check out.
-
When she gets back to her room, the event is still up on her computer and there is a decent amount of picks that have gone through already.
YN can hear her phone vibrating on her desk, she runs over - all her missed call notifications popping up, signaling that Harry had tried to call her multiple times in the past hour.
"Hello?" She asks into the phone, if she was in her right mind - she would have already realized that she should have called him and congratulated him on his achievement but she’d forgotten her phone.
"You're that fuckin' cross with me that you're not even going to call and tell me congratulations?" Harry bites out angrily before adding, "Been sitting 'ere, waiting for my phone to ring and nothing. Not one fuckin' word from you."
YN's mouth gaped open for a second in surprise, his voice was raised and sharp, it had a rumble that was from deep in his chest.
"I meant to call but -" YN tried to gather her thoughts, her mind was going every which way right now as she stared at the bright pink and blue patterns on the boxes in front of her.
"But what? There's literally no bloody excuse for you not to call me!" Harry bites out, his mouth sounds much too close to the receiver and she can hear muffled noises in the background.
"I'm-“
"Whatever, I'm not going to sit on the phone and listen to excuses. I needed you here and you didn't come. I bet you didn't even watch it, did you?" Harry accuses angrily, a tremble in the strain to keep his voice at a low volume, like there were people around.
"I did watch it," YN replies but she knows that she sounds dull, unexcited, numb because she's more concerned that she's about to ruin the life he just began than arguing over a phone call.
"Don't sound so thrilled," Harry scoffs - calling her bluff but the hurt is laced through his words, "Whatever. I'm not going to sit here and beg you to be happy for me all because of a little fight. I can’t believe you.”
Then the line goes dead.
YN feels like she's going to throw up.
She snatches up the boxes, going into the bathroom, and is ripping every single white plastic test out of the packaging before laying them next to the sink in preparation.
She had chugged a massive amount of water that she had purchased at the drugstore on her way home - which could have also contributed to her upset stomach.
YN stares at them for a long moment, she doesn't think her heart has ever raced so fast in her life because this will change the course of not only her future but Harry's too.
She sits down, does what she needs to do then reapplies the caps and places them on the counter as she sets her timer for three minutes.
YN tries to keep her mind blank but it isn't working - she knows Harry wants kids, wants kids with her but she also feels like this might ruin his dreams - getting this dream job and then dealing with the weight of the responsibility of a baby he didn't plan for with the woman he would resent because of it.
The shrill timer has her jumping from the edge of her bed, legs feeling like absolute gelatin as they drag her to the tiny dorm bathroom.
She looks at herself in the mirror, trying to convince herself that they'll be negative but when she darts her eyes down - they're all blaring the same word to her.
Pregnant.
YN's breath caught as she picked them up and examined the one with just the lines further before she let herself exhale, steadying her breathing.
She instinctively puts a hand to where her baby is being homed, a new emotion that she's never felt in her life crashes over her like a tsnaumi.
It was a warm, honeyed mixture of love, fierce protectiveness, and awe of what she and Harry had unknowingly created with their love.
Harry.
YN doesn't know what to do.
She doesn't know how he's going to take it.
YN rushes to her phone, picking it up to ring him and it only rings two or three times before he's sending her to voicemail and ignoring it.
It doesn't deter her, she's calling once, twice, three times before he finally answers out of annoyance of her persistence.
"What could you possibly want from me right now?" Harry growls in frustration over the line, a tone she’s never head him use with her, "Humor me."
YN freezes in panic, this isn't how she wants to tell him when he's already so angry with her.
What if he was planning on breaking up with her?
"I-I'm sorry," YN chokes outs, she feels like she might hyperventilate with the stress coursing through her body, the calmness that was there a minute ago disappearing, "I-I'm sorry."
There's a short pause.
"Baby," Harry breathes out, the softness that she's used to seeping into his tone, "Are you okay? I-"
"I can't-" YN stammers, squeezing her eyes shut and swallowing harshly, "I...I can't do this right now."
YN makes a rash decision, she hangs up the phone and presses the side button until the screen fades to black.
Then she's setting it on her desk, ignoring the fact that Harry is most likely desperately trying to call her back.
She couldn't fight with him anymore right now, not when she was having to process that she was growing another human inside of her.
YN feels the exhaustion of the past week and a half of morning sickness, sleep deprivation from finals, and arguments with Harry hit her like a ton of bricks.
Her eyes close the second her head hits her pillow.
-
There's a loud banging at her door which startles her out of her slumber, her bones feel heavy and her head hurts from the day.
She can tell time has passed because when she fell asleep it was only mid afternoon and now it was completely pitched dark outside of her dorm - the streetlights glimmering dully.
YN drags her feet, assuming it was mostly likely one of the frat boys who Harry sent over to check on her.
She knows she looks like a hot mess, face swollen, puffy eyes, and a bun that had her hair sticking every which way out of it.
"What do you want?" YN groans to get the banging to stop, unlocking and flinging open the door without another thought.
To her utter surprise, it was none other than her boyfriend who looked absolutely livid but at the same time, relieved that she was safe and okay.
He was wearing a New York Yankees tee and his normal athletic shorts and Nikes, his hair still nicely gelled from his television appearance earlier in the day - a bit of sunburn on his nose.
"What the fuck is going on?" Harry rasps, looking her body up and down, "Turning off your phone like that. What on Earth are you thinking?”
YN just...starts crying.
She buries her head in her hands and lets the sobs wrack through her body, shaking her head because she just can’t fight with him right now.
"Baby, baby," Harry responds, alarmed as he pushes himself into the room with her and shuts the door behind them, "Okay, darling. It's okay. I promise I was just cross, baby. Please, breaks my heart to see you cry like this.”
YN allows Harry to tug her straight into his strong chest, wishing that his warm scent could ground her like it usually does but it doesn't.
"I need you to talk to me. I need to know what's going on. You haven't acted like yourself at all today, sweetheart. I know I could have handled my anger better and I'm sorry, my love," Harry murmurs into her hair, lips brushing against her as he keeps her secured to him, his hand slipping under her shirt to rub at the warm skin of her back.
"Don't apologize," YN manages to spit out, "It's me, I'm...I'm messing everything up for you."
Harry pulls back until they make eye contact, his brow furrowed in confusion, "You're the best fuckin' thing that's ever happened to me. You've never ever messed anything up for me."
"Don't say that, please," YN whispers, shaking her head, "I have to tell you something."
Harry's eyes widen and an almost heartbreaking expression takes over his previously rigid one, "Baby...you didn't cheat on me?"
"God, Harry," YN can't help but wetly chuckle, "When would I have time? You're literally trying to get it every other second."
His face smooths out, a boyish smile appears for a moment until he's serious again, "What happened? What did you do that you think could mess up my life?"
YN lets out a loud exhale before detangling herself from him, she goes into the bathroom to gather the tests into her fist and swallows hard before coming back out.
Without making eye contact, she shoves them into his palm and watches nervously as the crease between his brow appears as he brings them up to examine them.
It takes him a moment before his eyes meet YN's, he says, "Tell me once again, how you think you could possibly be messing up my life?"
"I'm pregnant," YN whispers as if he doesn't have the tests in his hands, "It's not..it's not what you planned. you just started your career."
Harry tosses the plastic tests on the desk, striding towards his girlfriend, and hugging her so tightly that it nearly hurts before his lips on hers.
"Sweetheart, you're gonna give me a baby?" Harry asks sweetly, his eyes watering and he chuckles as he wipes away the tears that start to spill over.
"I am," YN smiles softly, unsure as she thumbs at the apples of his cheeks where his grin is so wide his eyes are squinted, dimples popping.
"How...How could you think I wouldn't be anything but excited?" Harry murmurs as his large hands start rucking up her shirt to palm at her belly, "Never been a secret that I wanted this with you. Always want you more than anything, that includes baseball."
YN buries her face into his chest, lets him rock them back and forth as she feels little sobs shake his chest.
"I can't believe we're gonna have a baby," Harry sniffles happily, "Never thought I was gonna find the one, you know? Wanted my whole life for you, didn't think you existed. Then you just come into my life and give me everything I ever wanted."
"You just started your whole life," YN still feels her lips quiver while Harry pecks them over and over again, hands rubbing over every inch of her tummy as if he’s saying hello to the baby.
"You're right," Harry agrees with a soft smile, he's trying to hold back a sob, "Got onto my dream team, got my dream girl, and now we're gonna have a little family."
YN shutters out a choked noise, shaking her head in denial still, "It's..It's...We're going to hold you back."
The curve of his lips drops, into something more stormy, his hands firmer on her hips as he makes eye contact, "Stop it now, okay? I want this baby. I want you. All of it. Nothing, nothing is more important than this."
YN nods in better understanding, wrapping her arms around his neck and bringing their lips together once more, "We're going to be parents."
Harry brings her as close as possible, she can feel his heartbeat thudding rapidly in his chest like after a long game.
She's confused when he pulls back, keeping her at arm's length before he's kneeling down, "I don't have a ring right now but I'm sure as hell making you my wife as soon as possible. Gonna be my wife and have my baby. I don't want this with anyone else, baby. I'm so god damn in love with you I'm stupid with it. Please darling, please marry me."
YN knows the shock on her face is visible, she must pause for a moment too long because Harry begins to speak again but YN is giggling and saying, "Of course, I'll marry you," before she's stepping forward and knocking him over with how much force she hugs him with.
It ends up with Harry splayed on his back on the carpet of her tiny dorm room, with her on top, kissing him and tugging at his shirt until she can pull it over his head.
"Gonna give it to your fiancé? Gonna show me what a good lil' wife you're gonna be?" Harry rumbles, the arousal already setting into his bravado as he moves to take off her top - squeaking when she bites his lip at his cooing tone.
-
It's not the wedding she thought she would have with Harry but that was okay - somehow what they ended up doing was way better than anything over the top or extravagant.
It's at City Hall, the witness being someone who happened to be in the courtroom that day - YN was dressed in a simple white dress, Harry in the same suit he wore to the draft pick.
By this point, her bump was just showing at nearly four months, so much had changed in that short time.
They both had graduated with their degrees, relocated to a small apartment in Manhattan, Harry was already in the first season of his new career.
It wasn't the luxurious lifestyle quite yet, they still had to budget their money and make sure they didn't eat out too much because Harry had yet to make any major money yet (oh, how that would change).
They knew their families would be upset they weren't invited to the wedding but it was something they just wanted to do for each other and the tiny baby growing in her stomach.
Harry sobs like an absolute baby when YN says "I do" and when it's made official Harry has both hands on the sides of her jaw and brings her in for a deep kiss before one palm moves to cradle her belly.
-
Harry was just starting his second season of the game, as soon as he had been drafted - he had been thrust onto the field.
It hadn't been a surprise when within a few weeks he was starting pitcher and on the hitting line-up.
YN traveled with him to nearly every game until it wasn't safe for her to fly anymore as she reached the end of her pregnancy.
The money had begun to appear in their bank account at an alarmingly fast rate, making Harry a multi-millionaire overnight.
They moved from the tiny one bedroom to a luxurious apartment in mere months because not only was he getting paid to play, the commision from his jersey and other memorabilia, then he signed multiple contracts with different brands like Nike and Smart Water for millions upon millions of dollars too.
YN had never seen Harry happier, they were both thriving, and they were loving the little life they created in New York City.
He couldn't be happier with his dream job, his wife, and his little baby on the way - however, he did struggle on the occasions where he was traveling for an extended period of time and was away from her.
-
"How are you feeling?" Harry murmurs, it's dimly lit in his hotel room - he's exhausted from a long game and the anxiety of being away from his wife.
"Bub is kicking up a storm," YN replies with her own smile, she moves the camera until it's on her belly - obvious against her taut skin when an elbow rolls into her side, "They miss you."
It was the wrong thing to say today.
Harry begins to sniffle on the other line, YN pulls the phone back to her where she can see Harry's eyes watering and he's rubbing his face against the sleeve of his shirt.
"I hate being away from you," Harry mumbles, rubbing his eyes before looking at the camera with a guilty expression, "I don't get it. All these guys have no problem going out and partying after every game and all I can do is miss you and the baby."
YN doesn't think anyone in the world would think The Harry Styles, newly twenty-one, millions of dollars at his disposal, and available girls at his fingertips wouldn't be partying after an impressive game - no instead he's in his hotel room tearful about how much he misses his wife.
YN decides empowerment would be the best course of action to make him feel better tonight, so that's what she does.
"H, you're being the best husband and daddy, you know?" YN reminds him, wishing she could cuddle him in this moment, "Providing for your family."
Harry seems to hear that, smiling a bit and nodding, "Anything for you two. I'd do whatever I had to, to provide for you."
YN has no qualms that she married the right man.
-
YN is about a week and a half away from her due date, her ankles swollen and the baby getting uncomfortably large in their home.
Harry had a photoshoot for a Nike advert in Manhattan today for a new line of running clothes that he was modeling for.
She had accompanied him, making herself as comfortable as possible on a sofa in the corner of the studio - sipping from a water bottle as she watched her husband.
He looked so fucking handsome is the thing, changing right there in front of everybody - showing off his rippled stomach, the sharp vee that leads into his shorts.
She couldn't lie and say it didn't do anything to her because the pregnancy hormones - well Harry hadn't been complaining with how often she was trying to get with him.
-
Harry had a late flight home, he fully expected YN to have been asleep by the time he dropped his duffel in the entryway of their flat.
However, when he trails into the living room, he's surprised by her sitting on their sofa, looking at him expectantly in just a tee of his and some soft-looking panties.
"Hi darling," Harry murmurs, his voice soft and low but she didn't look an ounce of tired as her eyes looked him up and down, "Not sleepy?"
"Mmm, was waiting up for you," YN agrees before casually tacking on, "So that you could fuck me."
Harry's eyebrows nearly shoot into his hairline, a warm zip of electricity making his cock twitch, "Baby, are you--"
"Don't," She complains brattily, heaving herself up and off the couch to trail over to him, wasting no time in getting his shirt off before he gets with the program and is taking over.
Harry groans loudly when his hand dips down into the front of her panties, "Fucking shit. This for me, sweet girl?"
"Please, m'so ready," YN huffs, not wanting any teasing like she usually does, "Harry, please. Stop messing around. Just want it.”
"Jesus, you're so fucking hot," Harry rumbles as he gently pushes her back onto the couch until she's laying down and he can crawl ontop of her, smiling more fondly when the large bump of her belly prohibts Harry from pressing himself against her like he wants.
“No, not like this,” YN complains after just a moment, pushing a confused Harry up until she can rearrange them until he’s sat up and she can lower herself down onto him to get deeper.
“Fuckin’ hell,” Harry gasps when she sinks all the way down, his mouth moving to lick at her sensitive and puffy nipples as she begins to lazily grind back and forth.
She isn’t rushed, completely lost in her own arousal as she moves her hips every which way to find where she can get the most friction on her clit and where he’ll be hitting her spot.
“No bloody wonder m’obsessed with you,” Harry remarks breathily when she begins to pick up the pace of her movements, eyes shut and head tilted back, pushing her chest further into his mouth as she mewls at her oncoming pleasure, “Never seen somethin’ better than this. All full of my baby, riding me like you own me. You do own me, baby.”
-
YN is taken out of her dirty daydream by a sharp pain to her side, it’s not like her usual jolts from when the bub kicks her too hard or throws an elbow.
Instead, she’s panicked when a gush of fluid seeps through her leggings and begins to drip down her legs - for a moment she thinks she wet herself until she realizes her water just fucking broke.
YN’s frozen for a moment, Harry’s currently giving the flashing cameras a dazzling smile in a mesh top and matching shorts.
The ache she felt moments ago resurfaces but feels more visceral this time, making her toes curl at the pain that radiates through her whole body.
She doesn’t feel like she can stand up, not without help, and there’s no one right near her but she doesn’t want to cause a scene by yelling for him.
After another contraction rocks her, it’s involuntary when she cradles her stomach and lets out a low moan of pain that has everyone turning their head to look.
Harry’s rushing from the white backdrop, over to the couch to knee down, when his hands come to rest on her thighs he notices the wet fabric underneath his fingertips.
“H,” YN whimpers, reaching to place her hands on his shoulders, “The baby’s co-coming,” She stutters over a contraction.
Harry goes into serious husband mode, “Okay, okay darling. We have to get you to the hospital. You’re doing perfect already. Let me help you up.”
YN gets to her feet, gripping her husband’s forearm hard when a cramp radiates through her stomach, and Harry just presses his lips to her clammy forehead until it passes.
-
“Alright, honey. I need you to push on three,” The doctor at the end of the bed instructs as the nurses flit around to prepare for the arrival of their child.
YN nods, holding Harry’s hand tightly as she pushes as hard as she can for five long seconds before slumping back down onto the bed and panting.
“Okay, we’re gonna give you a minute break then try again,” Dr. Dicer instructs before smiling reassuringly at the young couple.
“You’re doing so good,” Harry murmurs against her temple, pecking all over her sweaty face and rubbing his thumb over her knuckles, “You’re so so close. I’m so fuckin’ proud of you.”
“I just want our baby,” YN huffs between gasps of catching her breath, “Just want our baby, H.”
“Soon, soon we’re gonna have them, huh?” Harry smiles happily, his hands were shaking with nervousness and excitement all in one, “We’ll have our baby. Be a family.”
“Yeah, we wi- ohh,” YN cuts off in a groan, scrunching her face up and crying out, “I have to push. I can’t stop-“
“It’s okay, mom,” The doctor reassured her, settling back into position, “The baby’s ready to join us. Only a few more pushes than you’ll be parents.”
Harry’s eyes widen when he looks down to see brown wisps of hair as the baby begins to make its entrance into the world push by push.
“Darling,” Harry’s lower lip is wobbling as she bears down to give it all of her might and he nearly chokes on his own breath when in the next minute the doctor is holding a squirming, unhappy crying baby up.
“It’s a boy! Congratulations mom and dad,” Dr. Dicer announces before laying the baby boy on YN’s bare chest as he lets out little bouts of wails.
“Oh my god,” YN giggles between tears, her fingers coming to touch the baby’s strands of damp hair before tracing over his tiny facial features, “Harry, baby. Harry, look.”
“I’m looking,” Harry sniffles, his thumb coming to rub at the baby’s forehead before the nurses swoop in to perform all the necessary tests, “He’s perfect, he’s so fucking perfect. Look how good you did. Did such a good job at giving us our baby, mama.”
It’s the first time the nickname slips from his mouth but far from the last time.
After he’s cleaned up, giving a clean bill of health, and done with their assessments - the nurse asks Harry if he’d like to have skin-to-skin contact.
YN has to chuckle to herself, in her hazy mind as Harry takes off his shirt and the two nurses' eyes widen when they see what’s hiding underneath- checking out his chiseled chest down to where his happy trail leads into his shorts.
It’s forgotten when Harry sits in the chair next to the bed and brings his son to his chest, the baby’s cheek resting against his pec as Harry rubs down their back.
And he just loses it.
Harry’s full on sobbing as he hugs his son to him, tears running down his cheeks and chest shaking with emotion as he kisses the top of the baby’s head.
-
Harry had just had another failed date, defeated as he drags his feet back up to his room in the frat house to change out of his nice outfit.
There isn’t any reason he shouldn’t have feelings for the girl he was just out on a date with, she was pretty, smart, and they even went to the same yoga studio.
He thought it was going good, he even agreed to go back to her apartment with her but when they were watch some dumb romantic comedy and her hand went to rub at him through his pants - nothing happened.
Harry felt defeated as he made up some bullshit excuse that he was tired from all the work-outs and games, that’s the only reason he couldn’t get it up.
But in reality, it was because there wasn’t a connection with the girl and he didn’t feel like he could even create one with her.
This had been his reality for his full life, he’s ashamed to admit when he got home from that date - he laid in bed and cried because he didn’t think that he would ever find someone who he could be close to, let alone be in a relationship with.
-
Now he was sitting here with the love of his life and their baby - something he truly had believed may never happen for him.
YN brings him back to reality when she reaches over to stroke his cheek, concerned in her eyes at how much he’s crying.
“M’okay,” Harry laughs quietly, a bit embarrassed as he kisses the palm of his wife’s hand, “I just..I’ve never been happier than I am right now.”
YN smiles back at him, tired and loving, “I’ve never been happier either.”
“Just you, me, and Easton,” Harry murmurs adoringly as he kisses his son’s head, “I’ll never need anything else but you two. Only thing that matters to me.”

Community Guided Chapter 3
*** This chapter contains blatant sexism ***
The next few months seemed to pass by in a blur. Aomine managed to get his schedule figured out, embarrassed to find that he would be taking a few pre-college college courses before he could take the ones needed to complete his degree because he had done poorly on the placement exams. Somehow, he managed to get into highest level English courses, though they focused mostly on writing papers and comprehension, but it meant that he’d only have to take a couple of those classes to graduate rather than a whole smorgasbord of them. While not high school level, he’d been forced to register for basic science courses since they were the lowest level the school offered. After receiving his scores, he had told no one. He’d torn the print out up and thrown it right in the recycling bin, face beet red as he stormed out of the computer lab. The last one he’d had to suffer through was math, though it ended up being his easiest assessment and he’d passed with flying colours. If he hadn’t needed at least one four credit course to graduate, he would have tested out of math altogether.
Somehow, maybe due to the influence from the Gods of fate, or just sheer luck, he and Kagami wound up in a few of the same classes. The redhead sheepishly told him the first week of classes that he had basically failed all of his assessments except the English one, so he had actually taken the entry level courses over the summer so that he wouldn’t be behind. “I knew you were stupid, Bakagami, but that didn’t mean you had to live up to your name!” Aomine gawked at him, stopped dead in his tracks with amazement.
“You don’t have to tell me twice, Ahomine-“
“You don’t even have the right to be calling me that, you shit fer brains-“
“Shut yer mouth wouldja?” The boy got in his face, baring his teeth. “I already heard enough of it from my parents after they told me they wouldn’t pay for remedial classes for such a brain-dead child.” Onlookers walked past quickly, suppressing giggles and speaking in hushed tones. A few suspicious looking guys stopped to try and egg them on, chanting fight, fight, fight from a safe distance. Sparks flew between them.
“Aho, I don’t even speak English and I did better than you. This is American college we’re talking about, here. Are you even fucking trying?” Aomine leaned in until their foreheads nearly touched, jabbing an accusatory finger at his chest.
Kagami defiantly closed the gap, ramming his own forehead hard against the other players. “The hell you don’t speak English. Don’t give me that shit.” They shoved each other back and forth, growling like mad dogs as they attempted to assert dominance. “And the fuck you mean this is an American college? Hard subjects are hard no matter where you are.”
“A preschooler could have passed those tests and you managed to fail two out of three areas?”
“Huuuhnnnn?” Their growling intensified as well as their bickering until people half way across campus caught sounds of what could have been rabid wolves on the wind. The boys didn’t speak for a week afterwards.
In the meantime, Aomine settled into student life. His classes were dull, but manageable, and he managed to snag a part time student job helping out a professor with some basic secretarial work. He didn’t have to interact with people, and it helped kill ten hours a week of his time. The professor was amicable, but often buried himself in so much work that he hardly noticed whether the boy was there or not, and didn’t seem to care one way or another about the effort put forth in handling the daily tasks he was given. Aomine liked the guy and most often used this two-hour window to catch up on homework or watching pick-up games on his phone. He couldn’t believe how often games were broadcast live, here. It was a never-ending stream of information and players. He drank in the information like he’d otherwise die of thirst.
At night he found himself going for extended runs, sometimes going as far as ten miles or more, before heading out to the courts near campus. The group of men he’d met his first week there played almost every single night, with a few regulars but mostly an ever-rotating cast of… interesting… members. David, to Aomine’s dismay, was one of the regulars who showed up and his haughty attitude towards him hadn’t changed a bit. Jayron didn’t show up for close to a month and even after he managed to come back, he shrank away from him like a kicked puppy. The bruises left by his fingers took months to heal completely. Not only that but he’d managed to assert some dominance, and despite the bad blood built between them, he often found himself at the center of the matches. They spent a lot of time trying to undermine his skill but failed again and again until they gave up.
One evening, about half way through a game, Kagami showed up with an unfamiliar face in tow. “This is my girlfriend, Whitney.”
She waved, smiling. “I already know most of you. Who’s this newbie?” She looked at Aomine with wide, strikingly blue, eyes. It was a stark contrast to her olive skin, but matched beautifully with the ashy-blonde of her hair.
Wiping sweat off his forehead, Aomine smirked and replied, “Daiki. Aomine Daiki.” Kagami’s been holding out on me. While not nearly as tall as the redhead, she still would have easily towered over the average woman, standing at nearly six feet tall. He had the feeling that had been in sports for most of her life seeing as she was wearing a crop top that barely covered her small chest and exposed her toned midriff. While she didn’t have abs, there was definitely definition there. She probably ran, or did track.
“He’s the one I told you about. The one who followed me from Japan.”
“Hey!” He barked, scowling. “You’re making me sound like a love-sick girlfriend or something. I didn’t follow you specifically. I came here to try and get into the NBA.”
Kagami grimaced. “Love-sick girlfriend? Blech. I don’t even want to think about that. How else am I supposed to say it?”
“Ehh? Use that thick head of yours. We’re rivals, you hear me? Rivals.”
Whitney laughed, a deep and rich sound that came all the way from her belly. “I can see that you two get along. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Get along where?” They asked in union, turning identical flabbergasted gazes on her.
She doubled over in laughter, her long hair falling into her face. “You guys are hilarious. Taiga, I knew you were an idiot but this is too much.” He stared at her with a deer-in-headlights look, trying to calculate where she could have drawn that conclusion. “Well, whatever. Daiki, was it?” He nodded. “It’s nice to meet you, but I seem to have come at a bad time. Do y’all need any more players?”
“You play?” He asked, dumbfounded. “These guys are pretty rough.”
She cocked an eyebrow at him and put her hands on her hips. “Would you say that to another guy? Don’t underestimate me.”
“Watch what you say to her.” Another player from behind him said. “She’s violent as fuck.”
“You scared of a woman?” David asked, laughing. “She’s a pussy just like any other bitch.”
“How can you say that after she wiped the floor with you last weekend?”
He sputtered. “I was just off my game-“
“Sure, you were. Just know that if she’s playing, I want to be on her team.”
Aomine looked at them, dumbfounded. “You guys let her play with you?”
They rubbed the backs of their heads, sour looks on their faces. “Cause Taiga makes us. Says that she wants a real challenge once in a while. If I had my way she wouldn’t.”
“Dude, she can hear you.”
“So what? She knows her place.”
“She shouldn’t be playing basketball; she should be at home in the kitchen making sandwiches and babies. That’s all women are good for, anyway.” David growled. “But because y’all are pussies, and are scared of some monkey from the jungle, she gets to play.”
Aomine’s gaze shifted to the woman and was shocked to see that her expression hadn’t changed. She stood her ground as though she hadn’t heard them. American woman are a different breed. He thought, admiringly. Maybe that’s insulting? The thought crossed his mind. He’d been spending a lot of time with Kaylee and had started thinking about how he spoke about women, though it didn’t change much. Turning his gaze back he said to the men, “Oy. Watch what you say.”
“Weren’t you just saying the same thing? Or are you trying to win her over hoping she’ll sleep with you?”
“Watch you mouth.” Kagami spoke just then, fury in his eyes.
Whitney sighed, loudly, in exasperation. “Taiga, down boy. Are you guys going to play or not? I don’t have time to deal with a bunch of man babies tonight. If we’re not playing, I’m heading to the gym.” She put a hand on top of guys head and stroked it like he was a dog as he sat there baring his fangs. Slowly he settled, though the anger in his eyes remained.
“She can play.” Aomine said, chucking the ball he was holding at her. She caught it easily, hands moving from her hips to her chest in one fluid motion. “Kagami, you’re playing too.”
“Of course, I am, Ahomine.” Finally, he smiled - a dark glint in his eye as they approached the court.
“Hey, what about the game we were playing?”
“I was already dragging you through the mud, just accept it as a loss.” Aomine said. “You couldn’t have won if we played five more games.”
“Since there’s three of us, why don’t we play three-on-three?” Whitney offered, spinning the ball on the tip of her finger. It balanced as though it had always been there – like it was an extension of her hand. “I’m sure y’all wouldn’t mind since having me on their team would be giving these guys a handicap… Right?” Aomine shivered as the air around her shifted. She’d already had a strong prescense, but now that she stood on the court, she reminded him a bit of his former teammates. He was getting excited. What sort of basketball is she going to show me, Kagami?
David sneered. “Fine but don’t come crying when you get hurt, bitch.” He reached out to snatch the ball from her but she swiftly stepped around him without the ball every losing its spin. When he reached out again, she dropped the ball to dribble, her body hunched forward as passed the ball from hand to hand, every flick of the wrist effortless. As he reached towards her, again and again, she took a step back, raised her arms, and shot. The ball flew through the air, bounced once on the rim, and then tipped into the basket. The sound of it hitting the court echoed in the evenings silence.
“I’ll make sure that if I need to cry, I’ll do it in Taiga’s shoulder.” She drove a hand through her hair, grinning. “That’s acceptable, right honey?” The sarcasm in her tone oozed like honey, sweet and thick.
Without even noticing the two of them were both grinning; Kagami with pure appreciation, and Aomine excitement and anticipation. He’d never played with a girl of this level before. They’d only just met, but he could easily see what attracted the redhead. He’d found himself a good one. He licked his lips as the tension mounted. “You’d better now hold us back.” A shiver ran up his spine. One similar to when he played with Tetsu. What sorts of unknowns was she going to bring to the table?
She snorted and ran to pick up the ball. Passing it to Kagami, she took the hair tie off her wrist and tied her hair up in a knot at the nape of her neck. “Who says it’s going to be me holding us back?” Both boys shook with joy at the obvious provocation. The game was on.
And it was over before they knew it. The regular players couldn’t hold a candle to Whitney even as they repeatedly checked her, being much more aggressive than they usually wore. With no ref, there was no one to call foul play, but the number of times she got knocked on her ass was uncalled for. Despite this, she scored more points on her own than the entirety of their team together. While not a hundred percent accurate like Midorima, the number of times she swooshed the ball in was unreal. Her footwork was fast, and nimble, and with her small frame even more so. She wove in out and out of players like they weren’t even then, often passing the ball between their legs before shooting down the court like a meteorite. After the first quarter she suddenly had two of the three players guarding her but they were like mice against a vulture. Her sharp eyes let her find the smallest opening and she could pass the ball to either of them without hardly a glance. Unfortunately, like Tetsu, her biggest downfall was her stamina, though she outdid everyone on the opposing team by a long shot. By the end of the match, they had three completely different players than they started with, and although she was gasping for air, her hair and clothes matted with sweat to her body, she was still standing. All the others were collapsed at the picnic table, faces green with nausea as the tried their best to not pass out.
When the final point was scored, she fell to the ground and let out a yell, dropping back onto her hands, head drooping back as if too heavy to hold up. “Fuck I’m tired!” She screamed at no on in particular, though she was still smiling. “You two are animals. Did you grow up in a fucking zoo? Did they do experiments on ya as a child? How the fuck are you still standing?”
Aomine wiped his face of sweat with his t-shirt and extended a hand to her which she took a long, long, moment to take hold of. Helping her to his feet he said, “That’s what happens you play a lot of strong people. If I’m going to be number one, I can’t let a few punks from the streets beat me.”
“Let me know what your parents were feeding ya so that I can give it to my future children.”
“You’re not half bad yourself. What’s with that footwork?”
She eyed him, dubious. “I don’t want to hear that coming from you. Taiga, I get what you were saying now. You played this monster in high school?”
“And won.” He said smugly, coming up and wrapping an arm around her shoulders. She made a face. “Oh, sorry, do I smell?” He teased, rubbing his armpit against her arm.
“Ugh that’s disgusting.”
Kagami’s face went serious for just a moment, though, as he added, “Though it wasn’t just me. I had some really awesome upper classmen. Without them I couldn’t have done anything.” He paused. “Not to mention that demon of a coach.” He shuddered as he remembered the beach running he did.
“That shrimp was really something. You guys were so scared of her it was hilarious.”
“Her? Your coach was a girl?”
“Oh yeah, I never told you? She was one of our upper classmen. Her dad was a sports therapist or something so she was super smart about like muscles and stuff.”
She nodded, knowingly. “That would make a lot of sense then why you didn’t brush me off.”
“His coach here is a woman, too.”
“Alex, right? Didn’t she play for the WNBA?”
“Yeah, but now she just coaches street brats like him how to play.” Aomine threw a thumb in Kagami’s direction. He glared at him, but the boy paid him no mind. “Anyway. It was fun to play, Whitney. Next time I look forward to winning.”
Her eyes widened. “We did win, or do you have short term memory loss?”
“I mean against you.” He extended his hand, his usual cocky smirk spreading over his face. She paused but then, saying nothing in reply, took his hand and shook, gripping tight.

TOEFL Experience. Part II
Hello everybody! I didn't expect that you would start following me, but, honestly, I'm pleased. Thank you! :)
I'm back with my sources for TOEFL preparation. Today I'm going to talk a little bit about the official resources because they may also be helpful.
Online course from ETS on the EDX platform
You can watch videos and practice a bit for free (as I understand it, without feedback), but only for 14 days. After that, all materials close, and you can't see them forever. That was my mistake. I thought that I could re-enroll and this would prolong my access for another 14 days. So I watched videos only about the scariest section for me, Speaking, and put this website aside, as I wanted to concentrate on my speaking for a while. When I returned and tried to re-enroll, this didn't help. So, be aware! It's only 14 days for free. However, basically, I loved this material because they had included sample answers (ideal and average) and explained why they had rated them like this. That's why I became a little calmer about my speaking; at least I could gain the average score :)
2. Practice tests
ETS provides us with one free sample test for the IBT TOEFL and one for the paper-based TOEFL. Also, they provide training questions for Writing for an Academic discussion (a new type of question in TOEFL since July 26, 2023) and offer free AI feedback (but I believe this is temporary). To be honest, I just downloaded these sample tests and didn't use them. The deal was that it was uncomfortable for me to train with PDF files; I couldn't measure time properly and used paper for answers; therefore, it was really far from the real experience. But this is a great start if you want to get to know what the TOEFL looks like.
3. Videos with transcripts about every section on the TOEFL website.
I regret very deeply that I found this too late (about one or two days before my exam). I googled the first Writing question, as there were some inconsistencies on different websites about the content of this question, and reached this page. Accidentally. In fact, it can save you lots of money and time since all the information about the test is presented here in a nutshell and in a really comprehensible way. Moreover, it's from an official provider.
That's all for today :) There are also TOEFLGo! App and TOEFL TV YouTube channel, but I can't say anything about these products. If you had an experience with them, please share it with us in the comments.
Stay tunned. Next stop: unofficial websites.

Cracking the Code: Demystifying the UPSC Exam Pattern
Introduction
The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam pattern is the blueprint that shapes the journey of aspirants aiming to become the torchbearers of India's administrative framework. UPSC exam pattern As one of the most revered and rigorous competitive examinations, understanding its intricate pattern is key to navigating the path toward success. Let's delve into the layers of the UPSC exam pattern and unravel the strategies to conquer its challenges.
A Three-Stage Odyssey
The UPSC exam pattern comprises three distinct stages: the Preliminary Examination (Prelims), the Main Examination (Mains), and the Personality Test (Interview). This multi-tiered structure serves as a comprehensive evaluation of a candidate's knowledge, aptitude, analytical skills, and personality traits, ensuring that only the most qualified individuals make their way into the civil services.
Preliminary Examination: Testing the Waters
The Prelims, the first stage of the UPSC exam pattern, consists of two objective-type papers—General Studies (Paper I) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (Paper II). These papers evaluate a candidate's grasp of subjects such as history, geography, polity, economics, and current affairs. It acts as a filtering mechanism, allowing only the most knowledgeable and well-rounded individuals to proceed to the next stage.
Main Examination: A Deeper Dive
The Main Examination, the second stage, is where the depth of a candidate's understanding is put to the test. Comprising nine subjective papers, it includes language papers, an essay, four general studies papers, and two optional subject papers. This stage delves into the intellectual and analytical capabilities of candidates, assessing their ability to articulate complex ideas, analyze issues, and communicate effectively.
Personality Test: The Final Verdict
The Personality Test, commonly referred to as the interview, is the last phase of the UPSC exam pattern. Here, candidates face a panel of experts who gauge their suitability for administrative roles. This stage assesses not only the candidate's knowledge but also their interpersonal skills, attitude, and decision-making abilities. It serves as the bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that candidates possess the qualities essential for effective governance.
The Role of Optional Subjects
One distinctive feature of the UPSC exam pattern is the provision of optional subjects in the Main Examination. Aspirants can choose a subject based on their strengths and interests, allowing them to showcase expertise and depth in a specific area. This flexibility ensures that the examination accommodates a diverse range of academic backgrounds and provides candidates an opportunity to excel in areas they are passionate about.
Strategies for Success
Mastering the UPSC exam pattern demands a multi-faceted approach. Apart from thorough subject knowledge, aspirants must focus on enhancing critical thinking, writing skills, time management, and emotional resilience. Consistent practice, mock tests, and staying updated with current affairs are also integral components of a successful strategy.
Conclusion: Embarking on a Transformational Journey
The UPSC exam pattern is a testament to the rigorous selection process that shapes the nation's administrative leaders. It goes beyond testing rote memorization, aiming to create a cadre of civil servants equipped with the intellectual acumen, ethical values, and practical skills needed to navigate the complexities of governance. Aspirants who understand and embrace this pattern embark on a transformational journey—one that not only leads to success in an examination but prepares them to serve the nation with integrity, wisdom, and resilience.

It requires months of rigorous preparation, hard work, and dedication. For many, cracking this exam might seem impossible, but it is not. In this blog post, we will guide you through the journey of achieving the impossible by providing you with some effective tips to crack the UPSC Civil Services Exam. So, if you are an aspiring civil servant, then read on to know more.
Tumblr media
Here are some strategies that can help you in your preparation:
1. Exam Stages: The UPSC Civil Services Examination consists of three stages:
a) Preliminary Examination (Prelims): It is an objective-type exam with two papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). The Prelims serve as a screening test, and the marks obtained in this stage are not counted for final merit.
b) Main Examination (Mains): It is a descriptive exam consisting of nine papers. The papers include Essay, General Studies (four papers), Optional Subject (two papers), and two papers of a qualifying language.
2. Syllabus: The UPSC syllabus is comprehensive and covers a wide range of subjects. It includes topics such as history, geography, economics, polity, science and technology, current affairs, ethics, and optional subjects. Familiarize yourself with the detailed syllabus provided by the UPSC and break it down into manageable parts for effective preparation.
Tumblr media
3. Marking Scheme: Understanding the marking scheme is crucial to optimize your exam strategy. Each stage of the examination carries different weightage in the final merit. For example, the Preliminary Examination is a qualifying stage, and only the marks obtained in the Main Examination and Interview contribute to the final rank.
By thoroughly understanding the structure, syllabus, marking scheme, and other essential aspects of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, you can plan your preparation effectively and approach the exam with confidence.
Create a UPSC Civil Services Study Plan:
Creating a study plan is essential for effective and organized preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Develop a well-structured study plan that covers all the subjects and topics mentioned in the syllabus. Divide your time effectively, allocating more time to areas that require extra attention. Set realistic goals and create a timetable that ensures comprehensive coverage of the syllabus within the available time frame. Here are the steps to create a study plan:
Tumblr media
2) Allocate Time: Determine how much time you can dedicate to your UPSC preparation each day. Be realistic and consider other commitments you may have. Create a timetable that includes dedicated study hours, breaks, revision time, and mock tests.
3) Subject-wise Study: Allocate specific time slots for each subject. Give more time to subjects/topics that are challenging for you or carry more weightage in the exam. Ensure a balanced approach to cover all subjects effectively.
4) Create a Study Routine: Establish a consistent study routine that aligns with your productivity levels. Some individuals prefer studying in the morning, while others are more productive during the evening. Identify your peak hours and allocate them to intensive study sessions.
5) Revision Plan: Dedicate regular time slots for revision. Create a revision plan to revisit the topics you have studied to reinforce your understanding and improve retention. Focus on key concepts, facts, and important current affairs.
Tumblr media
Remember, a well-structured study plan should be personalized according to your strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. It should provide a roadmap for your preparation and ensure comprehensive coverage of the UPSC syllabus. Stay disciplined, adhere to your study plan, and remain dedicated throughout your preparation journey.
Focus on Conceptual Clarity:
Tumblr media
1) Refer to Standard Sources: Start by referring to standard textbooks and study materials recommended by experts. These sources provide a comprehensive and reliable foundation for building conceptual clarity. Some popular books for different subjects include NCERT books for basic concepts, standard reference books, and specific books recommended by toppers and subject experts.
2) Take a Step-by-Step Approach: Avoid rushing through topics. Take a step-by-step approach, starting with fundamental concepts before moving on to more advanced ones. Ensure that you have a clear understanding of the basics before diving into complex topics. Building a strong foundation will make it easier to grasp higher-level concepts.
3) Make Notes and Mind Maps: While studying, make concise and organized notes. Summarize key points, definitions, and formulae in your own words. Use mind maps and visual aids to connect related concepts and enhance understanding. These notes will serve as valuable revision material later.
Remember, conceptual clarity will not only help you answer questions accurately but also enable you to analyze and present information in a comprehensive manner. Strive for a deep understanding of the concepts rather than relying solely on rote memorization.
Study Current Affairs for UPSC exam:
Current affairs play a crucial role in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Stay updated with current affairs from various sources such as newspapers, magazines, and online platforms. Focus on national and international events, government policies, and socio-economic issues. Make notes and connect current affairs with related subjects for a comprehensive understanding.
Here are some strategies to effectively cover and utilize current affairs in your preparation:
1) Newspaper Reading: Develop a habit of reading a reputable newspaper regularly. Newspapers like The Hindu, The Indian Express, or The Times of India provide comprehensive coverage of national and international news. Focus on the editorial and opinion sections to gain insights into different perspectives on important issues.
2) Current Affairs Magazines: Supplement your newspaper reading with current affairs magazines or compilations. Magazines like Yojana, Kurukshetra, and Civil Services Chronicle provide in-depth analysis and coverage of various topics. These magazines often have special editions focusing on specific subjects relevant to the UPSC exam.
3) Government Reports and Publications: Stay updated with reports and publications released by government bodies like NITI Aayog, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of External Affairs, and others. These reports provide valuable insights into government policies, schemes, and initiatives. Analyze and understand the implications of such reports on socio-economic issues.
4) Online Platforms and Apps: Utilize online platforms, websites, and mobile apps that provide curated current affairs content specifically for UPSC preparation. These platforms offer daily or monthly compilations of news, editorials, and analysis relevant to the exam.
5) Note-making: Maintain a separate notebook or digital document to record important current affairs information. Summarize key points, facts, and figures in your own words. Organize your notes based on different subjects or themes, making it easier for revision.
Tumblr media
Remember, current affairs preparation should be an ongoing process throughout your UPSC journey. Stay consistent, allocate dedicated time for current affairs, and integrate it with your overall study plan. Approach current affairs to understand the dynamic nature of society, governance, and international affairs, enabling you to provide relevant and updated insights in your answers.
Practice UPSC Civil Services Previous Year Papers:
Tumblr media
1) Understand Exam Pattern: Previous year papers give you insights into the exam pattern, marking scheme, and the types of questions asked. By practicing these papers, you become familiar with the structure and format of the exam, which helps reduce exam-day anxiety.
2) Identify Important Topics: Analyzing previous year papers helps you identify recurring topics or themes that have been frequently asked in the exam. It gives you an idea of the areas that carry more weightage and require focused preparation.
3) Time Management: Solving previous year papers helps you gauge the time required to answer each section or question accurately. It aids in developing effective time management skills, allowing you to allocate time appropriately during the actual exam.
4) Self-Assessment: Practicing previous year papers allows you to assess your level of preparation. It helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects. By evaluating your performance, you can focus more on areas that need improvement.
5) Test Your Knowledge and Application: Previous year papers provide an opportunity to test your knowledge and application of concepts. It helps you gauge how well you have understood the concepts and how effectively you can apply them in exam scenarios.
Make it a regular practice to allocate dedicated time for solving previous year papers in your study schedule. Treat it as a form of active learning and strive to improve your performance with each attempt. It’s important to note that previous year papers serve as a valuable tool for practice and self-assessment but should not be the sole focus of your preparation. They should be complemented with thorough conceptual understanding, current affairs knowledge, and mock test practice to maximize your chances of success in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Develop UPSC Civil Services Answer Writing Skills:
Tumblr media
Here are some tips to improve your answer writing abilities:
1) Understand the Question: Read the question carefully and understand its requirements. Identify the key components of the question and the specific aspects you need to address. Pay attention to keywords like ‘analyze,’ ‘critically evaluate,’ ‘discuss,’ etc., which indicate the type of response expected.
2) Structure Your Answer: Organize your answer in a well-structured manner. Start with an introduction that provides context and a brief overview of your response. Follow it with the main body, divided into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific point or argument. Conclude your answer by summarizing the key points discussed.
3) Stick to the Word Limit: Adhere to the prescribed word limit for each question. Practice writing within the given constraints to improve your conciseness and ensure that you cover all relevant points without exceeding the word limit.
4) Use Clear and Concise Language: Write in a clear and concise manner to convey your ideas effectively. Avoid using excessive jargon or complex language that may confuse the examiner. Use simple, precise sentences and avoid unnecessary repetition.
5) Support with Relevant Examples: Whenever possible, support your arguments or explanations with relevant examples, case studies, or facts. These examples make your answer more concrete, validate your arguments, and enhance the overall quality of your response.
Remember that answer writing is a skill that improves with practice. Regularly work on honing your writing abilities, aligning your responses with the expectations of the UPSC examiners. Strive for clarity, coherence, and depth in your answers to effectively convey your knowledge and analysis to the examiner.
Prepare UPSC Civil Services with Mock Interviews:
Tumblr media
1) Simulate the Interview Experience: Mock interviews provide a simulated experience of the actual UPSC interview. They help you become familiar with the interview setting, the panel of interviewers, and the overall atmosphere. This experience helps reduce nervousness and builds confidence for the actual interview.
2) Evaluate Performance: Mock interviews allow you to receive constructive feedback on your performance. Trained mentors or experts assess your interview skills, body language, communication, and content. They provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas that need improvement.
3) Identify Weaknesses: Mock interviews help you identify your weaknesses and areas that require additional preparation. Feedback from mock interviews can shed light on gaps in your knowledge, communication style, or presentation skills. Use this information to focus on improving those specific aspects.
4) Enhance Communication Skills: Mock interviews provide an opportunity to enhance your communication skills. Practice speaking clearly, confidently, and concisely. Work on articulating your thoughts effectively and structuring your answers in a logical and coherent manner.
Remember to treat mock interviews seriously and approach them with a mindset of continuous improvement. Incorporate the feedback received into your preparation strategy. Utilize the opportunity to practice and fine-tune your interview skills to increase your chances of performing well in the actual UPSC interview.
Revise and Self-Assess your UPSC Preparation:
Revision and self-assessment are crucial aspects of UPSC Civil Services Exam preparation. Regular revision is essential to reinforce what you have learned. Make it a habit to revise the topics frequently. Additionally, evaluate your progress regularly, identify your weak areas, and work on them to strengthen your overall preparation. Here is why they are important and how to effectively incorporate them into your study routine:
1) Reinforce Learning: Revision helps reinforce the concepts and information you have studied. Regularly revisiting the topics ensures that the knowledge stays fresh in your mind and reduces the chances of forgetting important details.
2) Identify Knowledge Gaps: Through self-assessment, you can identify areas where you have gaps in your understanding or where you need to revise more extensively. This allows you to allocate focused time and effort to those specific areas, strengthening your overall knowledge base.
3) Consolidate Information: Revision enables you to consolidate information from various sources and integrate it into a coherent framework. It helps you connect different subjects and topics, allowing for a holistic understanding of the UPSC syllabus.
Tumblr media
1) Visualize Success: Imagine yourself succeeding in the UPSC exam and visualize the positive outcomes of achieving your goal. Create a mental picture of yourself as an IAS officer or serving in a position that inspires you. Visualizing success can help reinforce your motivation and keep you focused on your long-term aspirations.
2) Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Connect with like-minded individuals who share your goals and aspirations. Engage with peers, mentors, or study groups where you can discuss challenges, seek guidance, and celebrate successes together. Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people can significantly boost your motivation.
3) Celebrate Small Victories: Acknowledge and celebrate the small milestones you achieve during your preparation. Whether it’s completing a challenging topic, scoring well in a mock test, or mastering a difficult concept, take time to appreciate your progress. Celebrating these small victories will keep you motivated and reinforce your belief in your abilities.
4) Find Inspiration: Seek inspiration from successful IAS officers, motivational stories, or books related to the civil services journey. Reading about the achievements of others who have cleared the exam can inspire you and instill a sense of belief in your own capabilities.

Given the financial and time costs to take the MCAT, it's important to understand how the test works, and how to get registered. A sample question might explain a psychological theory and then ask the test taker to correctly apply it to a particular situation.ĭuration in Minutes 10 or 30 (the longer break is for lunch) This portion of the MCAT looks at how well the test taker understands the biological and psychological factors that affect an individual's perception of the world, as well as their health and behavior. Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior For example, a question might give a hypothetical scenario about a medical experiment and ask for an answer that explains the results. This section looks at the test taker's knowledge of biochemistry and biology, as well as the ability to apply that knowledge to scientific contexts. The typical question involves asking the test taker to read a written passage, then answer questions about what they just read.īiological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems The CARS portion of the MCATs is the most similar to other standardized exams in that it tests the individual's verbal reasoning and reading comprehension skills. For example, a question might ask the test taker to identify the fastest chemical reaction within the human body.Ĭritical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) This part of the MCAT tests an individual's understanding of chemical and physical scientific concepts within the context of the human body. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems The MCAT is a long test, but that's because it has to cover a tremendous amount of material. It also provides an objective method of comparing applicants against each other when making admissions decisions. The MCAT provides a way for medical schools to confirm an applicant has the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed. The only formal eligibility requirement to take the MCAT is the intent to apply to a health profession school. The MCAT measures a prospective medical student's level of scientific knowledge and critical reasoning ability. Given its length and difficulty, prospective test takers must fully understand the purpose of the test and ensure they register for it far in advance to adequately prepare. As exams go, this one is a marathon, lasting about seven and a half hours, including breaks. We'll discuss how to study for the MCAT, as well as provide other basic information, such as understanding what is considered a good MCAT score. Adequate preparation for a test of this magnitude is essential. The MCAT is a difficult test and covers a variety of scientific disciplines and is useful to admissions officers when comparing applications for competitive and highly coveted medical school slots. Almost all applicants had to take the MCAT, or Medical College Admission Test, to complete their medical school application. Tips for Crushing the MCAT and Getting Into Medical SchoolĪccording to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), more than 800,000 people applied to medical school in the United States during the 2017–2018 admissions cycle.

Preparing for a New Semester
It’s around the start of the semester for many of us, and here are some things you can do now that’ll help you have a good one!
🎯 Think of goals you want to accomplish
Whether it’s personal, financial, academic, etc., listing down specific, actionable goals will help you improve yourself and give you something to work towards. Reflecting on last semester/year also helps.
📚 Finalize courses and plan future courses
Some colleges (and even some high schools?) have a period during which you can go ‘course shopping’ and audit classes you want to take. But regardless of whether you’re still trying things out or have already finalized your courses, it’s important to keep track of your requirements.
You can do this however you think is best - I have a google sheet with the classes I’ve taken/plan to take and when I took/ plan to take them, along with my major/degree requirements.
At the beginning of the semester, I review my four-year college plan. I rethink the cohesiveness of my course combinations and whether or not I still want to take the courses I’ve listed (this mostly applies to major electives), as well as when I think is best to take each of these courses. I’ll also run this by my advisor to make sure everything’s good.
🎮 Create a game plan for each course
Based on the syllabi and my experience with the first couple weeks of the course, I’ll create a plan that’ll hopefully help me do well in the course. This includes planning
What kind of studying I’ll have to do (e.g. make flashcards? write formula sheets? keep handwritten notes or typed ones?)
How I’ll tackle assignments (e.g. do one problem from the problem set every day? work on projects over the weekend? meet with friends to go through the homework?)
How I’ll organize course material (e.g. how will I organize my digital files? will I need to keep physical papers and notes in a binder? how many sections will I need in my notebook?)
💡 Plan your ideal weekly schedule
I combine findings from my game plan and my goals for the semester to craft an ideal weekly schedule. After factoring in fixed meeting times like lectures, discussions, weekly club meetings, and meal times, the rest of my schedule is filled with time blocks, and is sort of a hybrid between regular time-based scheduling and flexible time blocking.
I try not to make things super specific, e.g. I’d plan for 2 hours of studying then a 30 minute break, but what I actually do with the 2 hours depends on what I need to get done that day. This leaves room for spontaneity, but of course, you could always plan things by the minute if that’s what you prefer.
📅 List important dates in a calendar
These are mostly exams and breaks, but what’s also really helpful is listing out all the dates when assignments are released and due so that you can budget your time and energy towards working on those assignments.
For example, if I find out I’ll have 3 problem sets due the same day, I know I’ll probably have to do a bit of each every day during the week before they’re due.
However, if I have one homework due Tuesday, and another due Friday, I’ll probably spend more time on the weekend working on the Tuesday homework, and more time during the week working on the Friday homework.
🛒 Buy supplies
After going to my classes and finalizing my schedule, I’ll get the textbooks I need from amazon/chegg/online/the university store (as a last resort), as well as any stationery I don’t already have stocked up from the previous semester.
It’s helpful to go to class the first day and ask about the textbook because some professors, even though they assign a book, they’ll say it’s fine if you don’t have it, maybe because the lectures/lecture slides are comprehensive enough, or the library has many copies you can borrow.
In addition to that, there are some classes for which a textbook is assigned but is only used for reference, i.e. for additional explanation. In this case, I’d ask my friends or other people I know who have taken the course and see if they think the textbook’s useful.
Some classes also have special software that’s required, so I’d look into getting those. E.g. some classes use iClicker Reef which is like an online polling system that you have to subscribe to. Or for programming classes, different languages may require different environments, so I’d spend time setting things up on my laptop. This can take quite a while sometimes, and small errors in setting up can have pretty big consequences, so I’ll try to do this as thoroughly as I can.
🗑 Clean
It’s ironic that this is at the end of the list, but cleaning is one of the first things I do once I get back on campus. I’ll organize my digital files, clean my room, tidy my desk, keep last semester’s material in storage, etc. It’s always good to have the things you already have in order before you add/get more things.
Note: All the organizational tasks are in no way fixed. You should update each of them as you see fit, i.e. when you get more information as the semester progresses.

University students AU Dramione
Possibly worth noting: I went to a weird college and this ficlet is based on a thing that happened there. So if you’re reading this thinking, wtf kind of university experience is this? I hard agree. 🤣
“Granger, I’ve got a bone to pick with you.”
A cold, unwelcome voice interrupted Hermione while she was in the middle of typing in a citation link that was three lines long. She pointedly refused to turn until she finished typing in the string of numbers and hit enter.
A paywall filled the screen.
She sighed and with an inward curse of exasperation, shifted in her chair to deal with the unwelcome distraction on her hands.
Draco Malfoy was standing behind her, scowling.
“What do you want, Malfoy?”
He raised his right hand to show a thick stack of papers gripped in his hand. “The study guide you wrote. The answer to twenty is wrong.”
Hermione’s shoulders stiffened, but she kept her expression impassive as she tried to remember what question twenty even was.
Professor Snape had emailed the class a study guide with well-over three hundred broadly-phrased questions that “might” appear on the final exam. Hermione had spent a night filling out the study guide questions with exhaustively detailed answers, quotes, and references. She’d emailed a copy to the private study group she participated in, hoping to encourage the other members to share theirs as well so everyone could compare notes and develop even more comprehensive answers.
Instead, no one else in the study group bothered to write any answers for the study guide at all; and, to add insult to injury, someone whom Hermione intended to murder once she discovered their identity, had forwarded it to the entire class. Everywhere she went, she’d hear her fellow freshman classmates quizzing each other and reciting her answers verbatim.
She stared up at Draco Malfoy, who was notably not a member of said study group, standing with her painstakingly compiled study-guide gripped in his unworthy hands.
“What’s wrong with the answer?” she asked.
Malfoy glanced derisively down at the papers in his hand and turned his wrist to show her an extensively annotated and highlighted copy of her answer. There was a large section that had been slashed through with a red pen. “This whole section here, it completely leaves out Bourne’s commentary. Are you trying to sabotage the entire class by sending everyone shit answers?”
Hermione’s chest tightened and heat rose on her cheeks.
Malfoy stepped closer, and he leaned over her, smirking.
“Is that your plan then?” He quirked a pale eyebrow. “Think you’ll be the one to get Snape’s coveted A+ on your essay if you get the rest of the class to fail the final?”
Hermione’s hand itched to slap him across the face or possibly deck him right there in the library.
Snape’s required freshman class was renown at their school for its tendency to destroy GPA. Everything hung on the final exam and paper. There were more than a few stories of students losing their merit scholarships and having to leave the school because of it. Snape never gave more than one perfect grade on final papers per year, and rumor had that it had been more than four years since anyone had achieved it.
Malfoy had announced during orientation week that he was going to be the one to earn it and it seemed that everyone believed he would.
Draco Malfoy was one of those people that everyone seemed to know about. It was impossible to go anywhere without hearing stories about him. According to the aggressive rumor-mill at the school, he’d gotten a perfect SAT score and been inundated with acceptance letters and full-ride scholarships from prestigious universities across the country, but had decided to attend a “less known” school because his mother was close friends with the president and agreed with school’s academic philosophy.
He’d been dubbed, practically from arrival, as the class “genius” and had an entire flock of freshman and non-freshman girls angling to get their Mrs degree in Malfoy.
Hermione thought he was a pretentious asshole.
She was most definitely going to kill whomever it was who had allowed him to get his hands on her study-guide.
She gave a cold smile. “Gosh. You caught me, Malfoy. I put wrong answers on the study-guide and hoped nobody in our entire class would notice.” She folded her arms. “The reason I didn’t include anything from Bourne is because Snape said he’s wrong and the only reason his textbook was required reading was to highlight what an idiot some people are. If you want to add Bourne’s commentary to your answer, be my guest. In fact,” she leaned forward, extending her hand, “I have a better idea, why don’t you give me my study-guide back, and write your own answers.”
He smirked and straightened, sliding her study guide back into his satchel. “Everyone knows I’m going to be the one whose paper gets a perfect grade from Snape. I have to say though, it’s fun to see you trying.”
Hermione refused to rise to his baiting. “Anything else? By all means, feel free to spread a rumor that my study-guide’s rigged. Maybe then people will do their own homework.”
He cocked his head. “So you admit you’re angling for the A+.”
She rolled her eyes and sat back. “I’m a pretty sure everyone is trying to get it. This isn’t exactly a school with a class culture of only aspiring for passing grades.”
Malfoy moved slightly closer, edging into her personal space and looming over her in a way that made her want to kick him in the shins or, ideally, a bit higher.
“But you actually think you can do it, don’t you?” He flashed another smirk. “Care to bet on that?”
“Care to leave me alone and bother someone else?” Hermione said in a deadpan tone.
His smirk widened into a grin and he glanced across the library where a group of his friends were all watching them. “Well, I should clarify, there are already bets that I’ll get it, but I’ll make a personal wager with you. Think you can beat me? Tell me what you want. I’m open to anything.”
His eyes slid down, away from her face.
Hermione folded her arms again and glared at him. “I don’t want anything from you, Malfoy, and you’re not getting a thing from me. Fuck off, I’m working on a paper.”
She turned back to her computer and watched his silhouette linger in the reflection of her laptop screen for several seconds.
Finally he laughed. “Thanks for the notes, Granger. I look forward to beating you.”
He turned and sauntered off.
———————
Snape’s approach to finals was unconventional even for the school. The week before the final exam, each student had a private, twenty-minute meeting with him in which they had to defend their paper. At the end of the meeting, he would tell the student what grade they’d receive on the paper, and then, before the final exam, he’d announce to the class if any students had earned an A+.
To Hermione’s irritation, Malfoy’s scheduled meeting with Snape was forty minutes before hers. The hallway outside his office door was lined with students sitting silently and reviewing their papers and notes.
The office door swung open and Malfoy emerged, his face aglow with smug triumph.
The hallway broke out in whispers.
“You got it?” Nott asked right out.
Malfoy grinned. “Perfect grade. First one in five years he said.”
Hermione stiffened where she was sitting as whispers of admiration and congratulations swept down the hallway.
Padma Patil was sitting next to Hermione and rested a hand briefly on her shoulder.
Malfoy’s attention zeroed in and he walked over, stopping in front of Hermione.
“Tough luck, Granger. Maybe in another life. I’m sure you’ll at least get an A.” He started to turn and then paused as though he were just remembering something. “A lot of us are going to be celebrating tonight, you should come, unless you want people to think you’re a sore loser.”
Hermione stared up at him with a flat expression until he finally turned with a shrug and walked away.
When she emerged from her meeting, she didn’t say a word to the other students waiting in the hallway. She went to her dorm and started studying for the rest of her finals.
—————
The final exam for Snape’s class started at an ungodly hour in the morning and the room was blessedly silent as students trickled in and took their seats. Hermione sat reviewing her notes in a corner where no one was likely to jostle her.
The silence was broken when Malfoy entered the room noisily with his friends at his heels and they settled into seats towards the front of the room.
Five minutes before the exam was scheduled to begin, Snape strode into the room and up to the whiteboard. He snatched up a marker and started writing grading percentage brackets. When he finished he added a colon beside each bracket and began adding numbers: number of papers that had failed, the number that had barely passed, moving up towards the 100% that sat at the top of the board.
His hand hovered next to it, and then he suddenly turned and stared at the room, his expression unreadable.
“This semester has a notable distinction,” he said after a moment’s silence. “For the first time in the years I’ve been teaching at this college, I have had two students who merited a perfect grade on the semester’s final paper.”
Hushed gasps swept across the room and students turned to look at Malfoy, whose smirking grin had frozen on his face.
“Next semester, anyone who hasn’t failed my class will be assigned to read Mr Malfoy and Miss Granger’s papers, and perhaps then the rest of you will begin to understand what I mean when I say I expect and will accept nothing less than excellence in this class.”
Malfoy’s platinum head slowly swiveled to so he could stare across the room where Hermione was sitting, an impassive expression on her face.
She didn’t look in his direction.
He kept staring at her until someone shoved a copy of the exam at him.
Two hours later, after turning in her copy of the final exam, Hermione packed her bag, bobbing her head at a few whispered congratulations, and hurried out of the classroom, heading for the library.
“Granger!”
She froze and turned, rolling her eyes.
Malfoy was jogging after her, notably without his usual posse around him.
She stood waiting until he caught up with her.
He stopped a foot away from her and looked her up and down from head to toe as though he were reconsidering something. “Well, you’re full of surprises, aren’t you?”
Hermione folded her arms. “Not really.”
He looked up and met her eyes, flashing a grin. He cocked his head slightly to the side. “I guess this means we should study together.”
Hermione gave a thin, false smile. “I already have a study group, we’re not accepting new members.”
His grin turned roguish and his voice dropped suggestively as he shifted closer. “It could just be the two of us. You’re heading to the library now, aren’t you?”
Her expression turned cold and she stepped quickly back. ”I’m going to study alone.”
She turned on her heel and started walking away.
“You can’t avoid me forever, Granger!”
“You’ll be surprised,” she said, glaring over her shoulder at him.
He was still standing where she’d left him, staring after her, that irritating, over-confident grin still on his face.
He raised an eyebrow. “Care to bet on that?”

So we had English paper 2 this morning, and for context this paper has fifteen multiple choice questions, ten questions on information transfer, nine reading comprehension questions, a 130 word summary, four questions on literature component, and an essay based on the novel we studied. The exam started at 10.30am and ended at 12.45 noon. That's a reasonable amount of time to finish the paper.
So. I finish the paper, check everything over, count the words for the summary, look at the clock, and the clock is pointing at six. It usually takes me a little more than an hour to finish the paper, so I assume “great! I took my time, just fifteen more minutes and I can get the fuck out of here!” I sit and wait. And wait. And look at the clock again. It's pointing past nine now. Why isn't the examiner collecting our papers? I look at the clock again, and boom. Congratulations, Daisy. It's still 11.50am. you have another fifty-five minutes to go.

hey everyone i am back!!!!! holy moly i had my comp exam on friday. i have been extremely burnt out all week because i’ve had to do a lot of last minute study and review along with my usual phd responsibilities. it was an ENORMOUS test which is why i have been missing for a while. essentially i have three comprehensive exams - colonial, modern, and thematic. colonial and modern are exactly what they sound like, and thematic is a cuba/dissertation specific reading list. the lists are 40 books/40 books/20 books for a total of 100 books spanning about 9-10 topics. this time around i read 10 books per topic about commodities like silver and sugar, labor history which focused on the mita draft labor system/wage labor system in the andes and mexico, new philology, and race/ethnicity. this was hard for me because at the beginning of the year i knew absolutely nothing about colonial latin america.... i was always a modernist who was trained in US-latin america relations until my phd so i really had no experience in this at all. i had to really teach myself from scratch starting in the summer. you have to get familiar with what happened, but also how all the books fit together and the trends and debates in the field as well as your take on them, then write around a 30 page paper in 8 hours. it’s honestly brutal... i don’t think i’ve ever done anything so hard since i wrote my MA/applied for PhD programs. so the exam ended up being two questions with 5 subquestions each for a total of 10 questions which i had to answer in 8 hours along with writing an intro/conclusion and editing. it really felt like manic writing to write almost four pages an hour but somehow i did it. you can’t take any breaks really because you need to use all your time but nick made me lunch and tea. i was really stressed but I PASSED!! it’s a fucking miracle i feel so proud and awed that i was able to do this. it’s all downhill from here because modern latin america is my specialty and i can write an exam for that with a lot less effort and pressure.

Got my nightmare professor fired, might've indirectly gotten him deported too
Before this tale even begins, this is obviously a throwaway account. This is a big bitch of a story spanning two semesters, so I'm putting the tealdeer at the beginning and at the end for those who are short on time.
TL;DR - My French professor was so terrible that I decided to get him fired on behalf of my classmates. After he got fired, my partner that I worked with to do this tipped him off to an immigration agency to get him deported.
Last semester, I enrolled in an introductory French course at my university. This was to learn at least a little bit of French so that I could read French papers about French filmmaking techniques since I'm a pretty hardcore film student and I really love film as an art form. Plus, I needed some gen ed credit for my degree, so it made sense to take the course.
I went to the first lecture kind of dreading the course. I was in 19 credit hours, which is taking six classes in a single semester, and the class was 4 credit hours, meaning we met four days out of the week, every week. Very overwhelming schedule, indeed. Needless to say, I didn't work a single job that semester.
The professor, who will be referred to as Baguette because it's one of the few French words I actually know, began to go through the syllabus and I watched as the excitement that is usually present in students on the first day slowly left everyone's faces. Before I explain why, I have to address that this is the most basic French class that the university I go to offers and is really meant for people who never took a lick of French in high school. Like me.
Baguette announced that not only would he be teaching the entire class in fluent French with no English whatsoever, he wouldn't be answering questions in English at all, and if you asked him a question in French but got even a word or a conjugation wrong, he wouldn't answer you either. Attendance was mandatory as well, and you could only miss 4 class periods before he started dropping letter grades. Now, this attendance policy is unfair bullshit because we met for class just under 60 times that semester, meaning you would fail the course if you missed 8 class periods, which is only about 7% of the total course. I was looking around the class and people looked like they couldn't drop this class fast enough.
Then, he announced that not only would we not be using a physical book, we'd be using a free website online, a site called Francais Interactif. Now, this got some excitement back in the air. Textbook prices suck, and anything to lower the cost of education for students is great. You can even use the site yourself to practice your French skills, if you want. It's open source, knock yourself out.
That said, the site isn't meant to replace a textbook. There's a free workbook and audio files to help with aural comprehension on it, and that helped me and some of the other students pass some of the exams, but the site's equivalent to the part of a textbook that actually teaches you the material is extremely lacking, sometimes only having a couple of paragraphs about a really important concept in the language. In short, it gives you a ton of ways to practice concepts but almost no ways to learn them in the first place.
This would have been totally fine if Baguette would have explained things better in his lectures. But, as you'll recall, he gave them entirely in French, and in fast fluent French. So, picture this; you have to sit through four classes a week that you understand literally nothing of for an hour at a time while the professor rambles on in a language that you don't understand but are desperately trying to learn, and on top of all that, you can't even ask him any questions in English because he won't answer you and you can't ask him any questions in French either, because you don't know how to do that properly yet, and you won't for 3/4ths of the semester, because the unit that covers question words and phrases was arbitrarily put a few weeks after midterms, and on top of all that, you can't even really do your homework or study for exams because you have no fucking idea what any of this nasally shit means. Naturally, we, as a class, slowly started to get more and more frustrated as time went on. A few of us decided to band together and be friends and study partners to weather the storm. I'll call the important ones to the story R and S.
S was a foreign exchange student from Spain who spoke perfect Spanish and was taking the class to learn French for when she goes back to Europe. Now, we dug into what all other classes Baguette taught and found out that he taught Spanish, too. Perfect. We found a loophole. We could ask S a question in English, and she could ask him in Spanish, since it wasn't asking him in English, and he could answer in Spanish and she could translate that back to us in English. Now, you might be saying to yourself that this a fucking stupid and no self respecting educator should teach in this broken, shitty, ass-backwards way. You're right.
This worked for a bit, but he started answering S's Spanish questions in French to combat our little exploit of the rules. We were defeated and back to square one. We needed to devise a new plan, because most of us were failing at this point and we were stressed beyond belief.
R, a frat lad, and I, decidedly not a frat lad, became unlikely friends. He was a pretty naive kid, and he was a hardcore drinker. It visibly took a toll on him. He had a beer gut at 22 and addiction kind of mentally hollowed him out and made him flippant and emotional. The guy was super easy to piss off and he overreacted to everything. I felt bad for the guy and even outside of the struggle in class, I tried my best to be there for him. We were talking one day and we decided to meet up at the library and just theorize ways to crack the class to get at least a 60.
At the library, R was playing around on Francais Interactif trying to find the videos the professor would use for the aural part of the exam (basically, you'd listen to the video and copy down whatever the person was saying for credit. problem was, it was hard as shit and it was easily the part of the exams that took the biggest chunk out of the class's grade). He couldn't find them on the site anywhere and he got frustrated and gave up, so he started filling in the slots where you put answers on the homework pages of Francais Interactif with random words.
That's when we realized that when you do this, the site gives you the right answer regardless, no matter how wrong you are. Essentially, we now had access to the entire course's answers for the homework section and all we had to do was put one character into the answer boxes and, since all we had to do for the homework assignments was copy and paste our answers into a Word document and submit them online, we could theoretically do all the homework while knowing zero material whatsoever if we just changed the answers in Word. We sat for about 45 minutes and did the rest of the homework for the entire course this way in one sitting.
We agreed to not turn it all in at once so we couldn't get caught and we agreed to keep our mouths shut and only share this with people who wouldn't rat on us. Obviously, we told S.
One of the things I'll never forget about that first French class was that, during the final, one of the students started to quietly weep. Then, the weeping got louder, then louder still. The student was clutching his head in his hands and you could feel the palpable impotent frustration at his inability to do French correctly. After I finished the final, I saw him outside the class staring out a window in the hall. I asked if he was alright and what he was crying about and he told me he couldn't answer even the most basic questions asking for words for things like left and right and up and down and that was thing that finally broke him. That got to me, man.
Most of the kids failed the course, even some of the ones who used the homework exploit. R and S passed with a D and I passed with a C, surprisingly. The professor actually liked me, for some reason, and graded my exams a bit more fairly. Even still, I'm an A/B student, one in the Honor's Program at my university, so a C kind of stung my GPA. But, seeing as more than half the class failed, I counted my lucky stars that I got off easy.
I went to enroll in my classes for the next semester, and I had completely forgot that I still had to take another French class for my degree. I checked the class list and the second class you're supposed to take in the progression was only taught by Baguette. No other professor taught Beginning French II, apparently. This struck me as kind of odd, so I checked the rest of the French classes that were available. All of them, all 6 courses in the French department, were taught by Baguette. He was the only fucking teacher the department had. My stomach dropped as I realized I had locked myself into yet another class taught by the worst professor I've ever had, to this day.
This is class where the revenge begins, and I'm sorry if that preamble was too long, but I had to give context as to how horrible Baguette was. Even still, I'm frankly not doing him justice. His class was an artful trainwreck of incompetence, in the slowest slow motion available over nearly 60 class periods. And I had to do it again, only this time with harder material.
I had been keeping up with R and S over the winter break and S was going back to Spain, so she wouldn't be in the next class with me. But, I got R to enroll in the same section of Beginning French II as me.
Baguette passed out the syllabus to Beginning French II and it was the exact same as French I, down to us using Francais Interactif again, just in the higher chapters instead of the basic chapters. Now, here's the thing about learning a foreign language; you have to build from the basics, or else none of the other stuff makes sense. None of us in that class, not one person, knew any of the material past maybe Chapter 3. Most of us didn't even know how to ask questions. I did, so I asked questions for people who didn't, since S wasn't there.
Well, if you thought we bumbled through the basic material, no harder bumbling took place then when we started on things that have no direct English translation like y and en. When he asked students questions in this class, they'd just kind of look at him dumbfounded and shrug.
We got a study guide for our first exam and I was going to study my ass off so that I could get a better grade than a C. Besides a brief stint with depression my first semester that made me not be able to go to classes and fail one of my courses, a C was the lowest grade I had gotten at university. I must've studied for twenty hours over the course of a week before the exam. I hadn't even put that much effort into classes for my major. I got into class on the day of the exam, and nothing that I had spent all that time studying was on it. I bombed that test spectacularly, getting a 30%.
At this point, I was pretty much done. I was willing to go to my professor's office hours and ask him how I was supposed to study for his exams effectively, and his response is what began my quest to get revenge on him. He told me to watch YouTube videos. I don't know what it was about this that got me so pissed, but I was fired up.
But, that wasn't all that drove me to take the revenge I took on this fucker. No, what drove me to go after this guy was R calling me up crying after getting his exam back. He did worse than I did. He got a 15%. He kept repeating through sobs that he just wanted to be a good student and that he didn't want to disappoint his mom again. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried at this. I thought back to that kid in French I after the final, about my peers and about R and something inside me snapped. I was going to get this guy fired and peacefully do anything else I could to ruin this guy's life one way or another, and R was going to be my Right Hand Man.
We met at his dorm and started brainstorming. It was about halfway through the semester, after our midterms. We both had a job, a significant other, extracurricular activities and I was taking 19 hours again this semester. We were going to need time on our side, a commodity that neither of us had, and we were going to need it quickly. We knew that the professor was going to be gone for a week at a conference right after spring break, so there was a two week window there. But, even still, we needed more time for what we started planning to do. I faked a doctor's note for two weeks absence and R agreed to use all four of his absences to meet at the same time French was supposed to occur and plan our peaceful academic coup.
Now, I knew I was eventually going to get caught from word go. But, I was so confident that I could get this guy fired before I would have a disciplinary hearing that I took the gamble, and Baguette took the bait. He excused me for two whole weeks.
So, you're probably wondering what we actually did. Well, the reason we needed so much time is that we needed time to both conduct interviews from the class as well as collect data on scores. We got a total of thirteen out of the seventeen students to make a statement about Baguette's performance in his Beginning French II class and all of them were negative. This was just in one section of the course.
Then, we asked if we could have their exam scores so that we could have some hard data to nail this guy with. All but two complied. We did some quick maths, and determined that more than half the class failed the exams, with most scoring between 30 and 50.
But, as it turns out, we didn't even need the exam scores given to us. We figured out that the online grade database site that our school uses so students can monitor their grades without asking their profs has a built in feature that shows the class average of every assignment that's put into the gradebook. Not a single assignment had a class average above a 50 except for the homework, which had a class average of around 80, no doubt thanks to the stupid exploit in the website.
Sure enough, I got tagged with a notice that I broke the discipline code of the university because obvious shop is obvious. But, it didn't matter. I had everything I needed to go to the Foreign Language department chair and sort this shit out. So, I did.
I showed the department chair all the data, let him listen to the audio from the student testimonies as well as gave my own testimony on the course. After showing him all this, he was dumbfounded. Not only did the chair not know that Baguette was a shitty teacher, almost nobody did course evaluations for French I, so he thought that Baguette was doing a decent job. He took all my evidence and gave it to the dean of arts and sciences and a couple weeks later, I get an email saying that Baguette was Bag-gone and that I was going to be withdrawn from the course along with everyone else who would've likely failed. Those who would've passed got to get a Credit Received grade without having to take the final. He got fired one semester before he qualified for his tenure.
But, that's not the juiciest fucking morsel of this tale. You're probably wondering how he got deported and how I found out that he got deported because of his firing. Well, after my disciplinary hearing got thrown out because the complainant was no longer affiliated with the university, I got more than I bargained for.
During his lectures, one of the few times he spoke English was after he introduced the syllabus on the first day. He had everyone introduce themselves and he started the exercise by introducing himself. Well, in his introduction, I remember him saying something about him being an immigrant from Venezuela. I live in the States (Etats-Unis for you Bonjour Bois), and some of you might know that we have pretty strict visa policies.
Well, R is pretty conservative. After our work got Baguette fired, we celebrated by getting some beer and shooting the shit. We talked about random aspects of the course and the fact that he was an immigrant got brought up. Apparently, R didn't know this and he was pretty upset about it. I tried to calm him down, but he went on a rant that I tried to politely nod along to while tuning out since I'm not really about that. I didn't think anything of it until a couple of days later.
He called me up and told me that he tipped Baguette off to a certain immigration agency for a "visa check" (his words, not mine) and that now all we had to do was wait. I was shocked. I didn't think this would go this far. I feigned that I was pleased with this but in reality, I was kinda bummed. Since he was probably here on an academic visa since he was a professor, he probably is going back home to Venezuela. I am glad, though, that he won't be teaching any more of my fellow students at my uni, because I wouldn't wish his classes on anyone.
TL;DR - My French professor was so terrible that I decided to get him fired on behalf of my classmates. After he got fired, my partner that I worked with to do this tipped him off to an immigration agency to get him deported.
