Hello.....How are you? Thanks so much for sharing your analysis in your blog. I'm new to BL. I felt really helped in finding your blog. I lived in a country where LGBTQ+ is considered taboo and my own family saw it as something sinful. Until I found mlm fanfics (I know it's a ridicilous reason for why now I'm interested in BL & GL media).
Can I ask, what are your top 7 (or top 5) favorite BL media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series) ? Why do you love them? And your top 5 (or top 3) favorite GL media? Sorry for asking similar question like from someone before (hope you don't mind).
Thanks again, @wen-kexing-apologist 💐🌻🌷
Hello! So sorry this took so long to respond to, I have been really busy and this write up took me a bit of time to get together.
Thanks for reaching out, I’m sorry that your family sees queerness as sinful. I’m sure we come from different countries, and different cultures, but I hope I can give you some comfort by saying I am proud of who I am and I love being queer. I love my queer friends, they are without a doubt the kindest and most caring people I have ever met. And you do not need to apologize at all for asking a similar question to a previous ask. I also hope you know that it is not ridiculous at all to have your eyes opened by mlm fanfiction, I promise.
So my list of (some) of my favorite BLs are:
ITSAY/IPYTM
180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Moonlight Chicken
The Eclipse
Our Dining Table
La Pluie
He’s Coming to Me
What Did You Eat Yesterday? (adding this as a special #8 because it is one of my favorites but may be hard to find)
You’re My Sky
Gameboys
Because this is a similar ask to one I recently got I am going to direct you to that for my explanations on 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us (available on Gagaoolala), I Told Sunset About You and I Promise You The Moon (available on Viki), and Moonlight Chicken (available on YouTube) and add three other shows: What Did You Eat Yesterday?, You’re My Sky, and Gameboys.
If you stick around in this fandom long enough you will start to see that Bad Buddy (available on YouTube) is one of most beloved shows on tumblr. I love love love that show, but it is not in my favorites the way these other shows are. However, I would HIGHLY recommend you watch it if you haven’t already. It is incredible, and a very important piece of BL history both for the level of popularity it gained and the way it subverted BL as a genre.
That said, let’s get in to my favorite BLs and why I love them, again in alphabetical order:
Gameboys
(Pinoy BL- Season 1: Available on YouTube or Netflix, Season 2: Available on Gagaoolala in Asia or with a VPN that can make it seem like you are in Asia)
Contains Themes of: Quarantine, COVID, death, queer character being outed against their will
Tumblr media
I literally just finished the first season of this show today, but have to thank @bengiyo for telling me this is what I should watch next because I absolutely loved it. It is the story of two boys, stuck in quarantine in the Phillipines during the COVID pandemic that meet over an online game and fall in love. I agree with Ben that this is an incredibly well handled pandemic story, the actors are fantastic, their chemistry is believable and natural, and I appreciate that they let these boys be horny for each other. I loved watching the highs and lows of their blossoming relationship and I am so looking forward to watching Season 2 when they are together in person and seeing if and how that changes their dynamic.
He’s Coming to Me
(Thai BL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: death of a teenager (related to heart problems), murder
Tumblr media
I talked about this show in one of my tag games as my pick for most underrated series in Thai QL. Which I stand by because this show did not have the distribution it should have due to fan interference because they were upset about Singto being moved from a match up with Krist to instead star opposite Ohm.
This is a show that I have labeled as By, For, and About Queer people. This is an Aof Noppharnach piece that is just absolutely beautiful in the way it explores the growing realization about your own queerness as Ohm’s character (Thun) starts to develop feelings for Singto’s character (Med). I love the additional layer to this show that comes with Med being a ghost who can only be seen by Thun, and how we don’t just get an explicitly queer character in an explicitly queer relationship, but that we also get a metaphor for queerness in the fact that Thun has to keep himself and his abilities private. When he hangs out with Med in public, no one can see him, and Thun often ends up talking to air, which results in people constantly staring at him in confusion, concern, or disgust. This show will remind you that Ohm has always been The Actor of All Time, the way his voice creaks in this show still haunts me to this day. I liked the mystery element in this show, I loved the rooftop confessions and the coming out scene. I loved all the ways this show was just so so so queer. Now that it has been released to the general public, I think every person who watches Thai BL should watch this show.
La Pluie
(Thai BL- Available on IQIYI)
Contains Themes of: lying to a romantic partner
Tumblr media
God this show is an incredible, brilliant, perfectly executed subversion of the soulmates trope. A theme I am generally sensing in the content I am sharing is that queer characters are allowed to be flawed human beings. Tai needs to learn how to use his words, Patts is perfect but does have a temper that he is managing extremely well, Tien is perfect but does constantly undermine and underplay his own emotions to support the other people in his life, Lomfon is rude. This show has a lot of very smart things to say, and allows its characters to both experience desire, and sexual frustration, it uses giving sexual pleasure as a way for a character to maintain control over new forms of intimacy. Myself and my fellow clowns on this website (especially @bengiyo and @lurkingshan) have fought for this show tooth and nail for weeks upon weeks to make sure that as many people as possible were watching this absolutely beautiful show.
Our Dining Table
(Japanese BL- Available on Gagaoolala)
Contains Themes of: death, child neglect, grief
Tumblr media
This is a very short, very sweet, wonderful spot of comfort and warmth. Its main themes are found family and navigating grief. It has the cutest little boy in the world who is just a bouncing ball of sunshine, and he and this show won my entire heart. I love this show for what it says about family, about care and love, sacrifice and healing. Even for the parts of the show that center around pain, this show is just so full of joy. I loved watching Yutaka open up, loved watching Minoru have a chance to relax, I loved Ueda-san getting to watch his son fall in love to become happier by way of existing around his sons’ happiness. I love that Minoru is very much an older brother to Tane, not a parent, despite how much care he gives him, and I love that Yutaka and Tane are genuinely friends.
The Eclipse
(Thai BL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: threats against protestors (including cars rolling in to crowds), suicide, grief, internalized homophobia, homophobia, authoritarianism, emotional manipulation, thoughts of suicide, queer character being outed against their will
Tumblr media
This is absolutely one of my favorite BLs, beyond the fact that the acting is incredible, the characters are allowed to be very flawed, very complex, and very morally gray the story itself is incredibly layered and is a huge social commentary on rebelling against authoritarianism, the ways in which identities and oppression are leveraged against marginalized people to get them to commit heinous acts against the people they should be standing with and not against. This show touches on so many different things: justice, hypocrisy, manipulation, love, fear, internalized homophobia, rebellion, activism. This show gave me both my favorite war criminal and his rat bastard boyfriend. It has some of my favorite kisses and favorite crying scenes. And it introduced me to the powerhouse duo of First and Khaotung.
What Did You Eat Yesterday?
(I am honestly not sure where you can find this easily, outside of @kinounaniresource. there is one season, a special, and a movie. There is a Season 2 on the way, and I am also not sure when it is going to be released or if it is going to be released on any particular platform)
Contains Themes of: internalized homophobia, homophobia, character with history of child abuse
Tumblr media
I am honestly not sure if this technically qualifies as a BL, but it is certainly a show that centers around an already established, older gay couple. This is a story about a couple staying together, and there is an undercurrent of long carried pain that is tucked so neatly between the layers of cooking, and eating, and love for one another. I do not really know how to explain this show beyond it just being one of the best things out there. We are so so lacking in elder queer content, honestly this is the only show I have seen out of 60+ QLs I have watched in the last year that has a main queer couple over the age of probably 25. I love the dynamic between Shiro and Kenji so much because who doesn’t love couples comprised of one puppy dog of a man and one man with the energy of a very annoyed cat?
You’re My Sky
(Thai BL- available on Viki)
Contains Themes of: betrayal, cheating, sports related injury
Tumblr media
This show has some of the most beautiful, saturated coloring of any show I have ever seen, the influence of I Told Sunset About You is incredibly clear (which makes sense because a screenwriter and director on You’re My Sky was a Screenwriter on ITSAY/IPYTM). I am not a huge sports person, but I do love a sports drama, and this one does a stellar job with the way it shoots it’s basketball games. It has Suar, who I was first introduced to as Tien in La Pluie as the main character and he is just SO. GOOD. This dude has been in three shows TOTAL and he just absolutely DEMOLISHES this role, and his role in La Pluie. Seriously, even if you could not give two shits about basketball (as a sport I do not, in this show I care very much) you should watch this show just to see Suar run a masterclass in acting.
Girl Loves
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of girl love shows that exist, the only one I have even seen coming out of Asia is GAP the series (a handful more exist, but they either seem to not be popular and/or are hard to access). It is an unfortunate reality that we are still fighting for more WLW content, especially GL content where the romance is the main and central plot. So, I don’t have a strong list to give you, because what does exist is limited and often gets canceled, but I will give you what information I do have:
Carmilla
GAP the Series
Carmilla
(Canada- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: student disappearances, death, undeath
Tumblr media
This is an 8 year old Western webseries based on the book of the same name. I watched this around the time it came out and loved it a lot. There are a couple seasons and a movie, all of it is really really good, and was some of the earliest queer representation I had, including having the first non-binary character I had ever seen on screen (does not mean there weren’t others, this is just the first one that I found). This is a webseries so it takes place almost exclusively in one room.
GAP the Series
(Thai GL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: severe homophobia, suicide, emotional abuse, death of a sibling
Tumblr media
GAP was fun, it started out really strong, but it did lose me a little bit at the end. But that is mostly because I am not the biggest fan of boss and employee stories where an equal power balance is not established. I think it s a really solid attempt at kickstarting GL into an industry rather than just an occasional one off. This is required viewing in my opinion because of how it was funded, and because it has some of the highest view rates out there for queer Thai shows, and really helped prove that GLs were stories that people really really wanted to see (read: production companies started to realize they could make a lot of money).
I can offer you a suggestion from other people:
She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat
(Japanese GL- I have not seen this yet and I am not sure where you can find this show. But I do know that everyone who has seen it loves it, and I plan to watch it soon. A Season 2 was announced recently but is not out yet)
Non GL shows that either have a lesbian or bisexual character and/or have a GL pairing as a side plot:
Bad Buddy (the second couple, but still has limited screen time)
Secret Crush on You (very minor couple, but has been in a relationship from the beginning)
La Pluie (A very small part of the story)
Lovely Writer (I have not seen this show, I do not know exactly what the plot is, or what purpose this character serves, but I know there is a bisexual character named Tiffy, who won the BL Bisexual Swag
The Warp Effect (one of the shows with a pretty strong lesbian couple)
Gameboys and Pearl Next Door
A book I really love with a WLW couple in it and a gay character is The Priory of the Orange Tree
GMMTV has started filming their first GL, which we hope will air late this year (or maybe early next year), it’s called 23.5 Degrees and I am very much looking forward to it!
Queer Shows
I’ll give you some bonus suggestions that are very queer shows, but aren’t defined as BL or GL
The Warp Effect
Gay OK Bangkok
3 Will Be Free
The Owl House
Deadend Paranormal Park
The Warp Effect
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: abortion, sexual assault, physical assault, internalized homophobia, transphobia, religious trauma, bodyshaming, slut shaming, kink shaming, workplace sexual harassment, homophobia
Tumblr media
If it is queer and from Thailand and I love it, odds are extremely high that Jojo Tichakorn wrote and directed it. Despite some very heavy themes this was a very very fun watch, it is one of the most kink positive, sex positive, and queer shows that I have seen. I have a friend who is a sex educator and I want them to watch this show for it’s public speech announcements about getting HPV vaccines and how pelvic exams work. This is not a show I can explain super well, but it is one that I highly recommend, and if you are planning on watching Only Friends, then it is something I consider a required viewing.
Gay OK Bangkok
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: cheating, HIV
Tumblr media
This is a very real look at the existence of gay men in Bangkok, I love it so much. This is a pair up between Jojo and Aof, two of my favorite directors. It is not a feel good show, it is an honest one. I think everyone should watch it.
3 Will Be Free
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: cheating, manslaughter, murder, murder of a spouse, kidnapping, domestic abuse, sexual assault, strangulation, transphobia, death, gun violence
Tumblr media
Once again, a Jojo show, and once again, despite the list of themes within the show, a very fun watch. This is one of, if not the only GMMTV show with a throuple, and is honestly very hilarious by way of three idiots on the run from the mafia, accidentally through mostly shit dumb luck and the fact that everyone is stupid, taking down a criminal empire.
The Owl House
(United States- available on Disney+, season 3 available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: white supremacy, child abuse, child neglect, heavy trauma, mind and body control, death, possible world destruction
Tumblr media
This is an animated show that I love dearly and one I find incredibly important for the next generation of queer people to see. The main character is neurodivergent, she is bisexual and gets a girlfriend, there is a non-binary side character, and there is also just a lot of casual queer representation. This show has a lot to say, and says it well, it is adorable and heartbreaking and everything in between and the fact that it got canceled is honestly a tragedy.
Dead End: Paranormal Park
(United States- available on Netflix)
Contains Themes of: possession, murder, death, undeath, paranormal activity, religious infighting, amnesia, animal death, kidnapping, child death, implied transphobia
Tumblr media
This is also an animated show that I love dearly and one I find incredibly important for the next generation of queer people to see. The main character is trans, the other main character is neurodivergent and bisexual, there is a lot of casual queer representation. Like The Owl House this show has a lot to say, and says it well, it is adorable and heartbreaking and everything in between and the fact that it got canceled is also a tragedy.
[I realize for The Owl House and Deadend Paranormal Park that my descriptions are very similar, but I cannot stress enough that these two shows have very different premises and tell very different stories. They are just animated shows that are able to contain a lot more queer representation that the stories that came before them, because of the stories that came before them]

so i very recently bought nv (for the silliest reason, saw a short video analysis on the bandaged up zealous bloke, thought oh fuck my balls i'm in love and impulse bought it), right, splendid game, the writing more than makes up for the playdoh gameplay, and ever since then i've inhabiting in the fnv tag, laying my peepers on all the art of all the brilliant folks in this fandom.
HOWEVER! your stuff stands out and it is ACE! that's some good fucking food right there, and it's bloody everything about it, your knowledge of anatomy, the colour palette design. definitely my favourite part would be how dynamic it all looks despite the fact that you use a lot of straight lines, your characters are never stiff. i myself have always been arse at lineart, so to my virgin eyes your lines are fantastic. thank you for the contribution to the fandom, and please do continue delivering absolutely smashing art while i unhinge my jaw and eat that shit right up 😮‍💨
(also, massive fan of the broody sniper lad, i can see why you like him so much. he's so fun to have around, and the quests he gives you are so sad. i know there are endings to fnv, and i know that characters you interact with get their own little endings, haven't not spoiled any to myself, but i really hope he gets his life together after my courier goes to fuckofflandia at the end of the game)
Tumblr media
aughhhhh this is so kind of you to say, thank you so so so so much!! words can't express how alskdadjawa your words make me feel! i do carry some pride with my linework so i'm very glad it comes through to people! :")
also YES i'm also glad you decided to get FNV!! the playdoh gameplay sure is. something. but definitely agree that the writing more than makes up for it (the mods too in some cases!!). like in fo4 i honestly was kind of zzz about reading the terminals but in fnv the terminals are like half the game for me.
here is a boone sketch/wip from a while ago, hope it makes up for his sad as hell quests!! hope you enjoy the rest of fnv and the dlcs!!!!

Byler is endgame starter kit:
So since this tag has blown up since volume one dropped and a bunch of people are new to the madness or are trying to convince other people that this is the direction the show will go in I thought it might be nice to have a post that works as a jumping off point for getting immersed in our little corner of Tumblr
1.
This edit is basically a 50 second thesis on Mike's behavior in volume one and everyone should watch it at least once....@sollody did an incredible job here and I think this is an excellent starting off point for understanding why people believe byler is endgame
2. @beepboop358 has the byler proof master slides available as a Google slides presentation on their account, it's probably one of the most comprehensive outlines of a lot of the really big byler proofs and is absolutely worth a read if you haven't checked it out before
3. Just read everything on the pinned posts for @kaypeace21 and @hawkinsschoolcounselor ..... seriously though, they both post some excellent analysis and their work gets discussed a lot here so it's a good place to read more in depth stuff about byler
4.
By @queerxqueen.... Excellent breakdown of why byler absolutely tracks from a narrative perspective and why m*leven endgame would be character regression for both Mike and El.... another account where basically all of the analysis posts are great and absolutely worth checking out
5. @bluemeetyellow is a fantastic blog to go through if you aren't super fond of reading long blocks of text.....super unique style of pointing out parallels and connections between different scenes and dialogue, absolutely worth a follow
6. @cmollyo does some really helpful compilation posts and reblogs a bunch of excellent content on top of some very cool original content
7.
@ghostgirlinsatin made this post with recommendations for a bunch of blogs that make good byler theory/analysis content so I will be yoinking it because I think it's a pretty good list of blogs to check out and also because I have a garbage memory. Their blog is also just good in general, especially when the doubt™ is at a high.
There are so many other people I could put on here but then I would never finish making a list so a lot of these are blogs who's content has been on my mind a lot lately or accounts that I read when I first got interested in endgame byler......also because 7 is a byler number and I thought it would be funny to keep the list at seven points

The end of the year is near! Give a shoutout to your favorite blogs and tag them to spread positivity before the year ends! (from: a secret anon)
FUCK YEAH!!!!
okay my favorite theory/analysis blogs
@aemiron-main - actually i hate him. im lying. all he does is cause me unimaginable pain and suffering. no but genuinely a genius theorist and has eyes like a hawk!! he does a fantastic job at thoroughly combing the show and finding the littlest details that don’t make sense in order to build a bigger picture and i eat it up every time! love him even though i think he’s goading me to kill myself whenever he reblogs one of my posts and the tags start with “wibble what if i told you”
@bugsbenefit - my absolute favorite blog to read about narrative analysis from!!! they do an amazing job explaining oddities from a narrative position as well as identifying ways certain theories are either supported by or don’t work with the way the narrative needs to flow in S5. she’s also super skilled at keeping my attention throughout a post with the way she writes
@bylerschmyler - love this guy because they’re not afraid to point out the flaws of something and create counter arguments but they also aren’t doing that stuff to discredit a theory but rather challenge its strength!! like they won’t press on if the original theory can go against the counter points they make. PLUS they create incredible theories of their own!!! the mike is the 4th victim stuff is really good
@finalgirlbyers - idc if they consider themself an analysis blog or not because I do. they regularly have fantastic takes and explain things in a quick and easy to understand way. she genuinely has a great grasp on the show but she’s also very open minded which is always so nice to see!! like if you’re looking for short, sweet, banger posts that hit the nail on the head i am pointing at their blog
@heroesbyler - ok. stav is the only person whose analysis i have legitimately cried over. the approach she takes to covering the very serious and dark topics of stranger things is something i really appreciate because she doesn’t curve the pure horror of some of the stuff going on. if you really wanna feel just how horrific the gay horror show is i’d recommend reading some of stav’s analysis because she NAILS it and does not mask just how fucked up it can get.
@laozuspo - james always has some incredibly niche but great insight to the show!! theory wise, i’m always amazed by how intricate his research for a theory will get so when you read his posts it’s just evidence on top of evidence and it’s always really engaging and VERY interesting. radiationgate had me hooked for days because there was just SO much to explore regarding that topic and there were so many little details that just make so much sense!!!
@mlchaelwheeler - MY SISTER IN MICHAEL DEFENSE!!! one of the original mike defenders and someone who i trust to accurately talk about mike’s character, which is saying a lot because i’m Me. ALSO she kick started so many great conversations!! iirc, she was the one who made the original theory about henry having been the one who kidnapped will, not the demogorgon way back in like. June. she’s been on it longer than any of us
favorite authors :)
@andiwriteordie - ok SO i have to tell you guys that this shit??? my life hasn’t been the same since i first read this. i know it’s an older one but it’s in my top three fics of all time i legitimately adore it!! pure jet fuel for that last week before V2 dropped and honestly part of me still really wants that final scene to happen in S5 ngl. like it kills me every time i read it but it’s just so GOOD
@astrobei - oh suni, how i her love writing. always a GREAT time when you’re reading an astrobei fic, and i think my favorite is still this one!! it’s just got such a fun vibe and the characterization is immaculate and the plot is really intriguing! it’s one of those fics where you can’t stop reading even though it’s like half the length of an entire novel. sometimes sleep is worth the sacrifice and this fic is one of them
@blueeandyellowmakesgreen - top ten reasons to kill myself; this ficlet. jade i absolutely love you but this??? fuck you for making me go through that not once but TWICE. i felt that shit in my SOUL and it HURT. it hurt SO BAD. writing so good it makes you immobile for 6.5 hours because you can’t stop replaying the image in your head 🖕🖕 (<3)
@/byeler - ok not actually @-ing this person because we’ve never interacted and i’m not about to make a fool of myself by being a little fanboy loser BUT. absolutely incredible writing. reading this had me so fucking sucked in dude, like i was reading and reading and i couldn’t believe time had passed at all. pure romance can be hard for me to steam roll through sometimes but i genuinely forgot that I was a Person while reading that
@elekinetic - ummmmmm hello??? script writer of all time? you’re not just reading it, you’re not just watching it, you’re being transported inside the show with the way she writes. every single character is on point and she maintains the atmosphere of the show itself BEAUTIFULLY!!! my favorite script thus far is probably the one where eddie gets shot, though it doesn’t seem like it’s up anymore. the ending has me gasping out loud because i saw it happening in real time in front of my eyes
@smoosnoom - MOON!!!! OHHHHH MY GOD i can’t even recommend one specific thing because every fic is just soooooo giggles twirls my hair. i am the number one smoosnoom fanboy. i fucking eat that shit up!!! like, whenever it’s time to read a smoosnoom fic I don’t just open the fic i KNOW i’m not moving till i’m done so i get some snacks and get really comfy and then i dive in and don’t move till i’m finished. every fic absolutely slays i cannot recommend every single fic enough
favorite editors!!!
@strangersynth - do i really have to say anything?? it’s time. like no shit he’s one of the best editors around and i think everyone knows that at this point. THE editor!! absolutely obsessed with every video. i really like the way she takes clips that aren’t really character clips but just stuff you wouldn’t even really think of or remember to build the tone of the video and it always comes together so well!!! like it’s the small details that he nails and that make the videos so incredibly delicious
@/thatgaymood - ok they just made a lot of funny edits + they’re really good at adjusting audio/visuals to make the character say and do shit that definitely didn’t happen but it’s really really well done so it’s just. I don’t know how to explain it. i was gonna find one of the more popular audios but i was scrolling their blog and found this and it made me kick my feet a little cause like. idk watch it and you’ll understand
favorite artists
@blueeandyellowmakesgreen - and she’s back! art that is so scrumptious and delicious and like. It’s like spaghetti kinda ! anyway here’s my favorite piece from jade and i will never shut up about it ever because everything about it is just sooooooo chomping biting chewing slurping devouring
@bujomoss - Hsbebbdbva bc d bujomoss is fucking!!!!! i love the way they draw mike like i love it so bad it’s not even funny. everything they make is so so good and my current favorite is this piece they did but it changes like twice a day bc bujo never does anything that isn’t one of the best things I’ve ever seen with my own two eyeballs
@gmaybe666 - BARKING BITING OH MY GOD. ok just so everybody is aware i am the biggest gmaybe fan around. legitimately i am such a fan i could gush about every single piece they do for days on end. it’s just SO good and it’s an art style i cannot get enough of. i have to scroll through their art regularly or i’ll start combusting it’s like air to me!! if i could link every drawing i simply Would but for now go give this piece some love please please please
@new-ronantics - OHHHHH MY DEAREST EEVIE!!! <33 art that is just so pleasing to look at. like it’s like biting into the most satisfying meal you’ve ever had!! amazing texture but not in the art way like if i bit into it i think it would have the texture of something i cannot even imagine but i know it would be the greatest of all time. incredibly bitable art i wish it were real food so bad. top ten bitable images
@nnilkyway - BITES HIM. ummmm ok so im definitely totally 100% normal about his art! yeah no it’s not like i turn into a wild rabid beast whenever a new nnilkyway piece is finished no definitely not bc i’m just So Normal about it. this means a normal amount to me because i am So-

I think everyone dogs on Taryn because this is Jude’s pov. We get an insider look into how much she’s hurt and that it’s coming from her own twin. But if Jude can break bread then the taryn’s haters should to. If they dislike taryn as a person, they need to take that hate up with the man who made her the she is: Madoc.
I also have a head cannon that in the future Jude and Taryn continue to grow as people, now that they can finally get out of the constant survival mode. I think they grow closer the older they get.
you're absolutely correct, nonnie.
i think people will be shocked to find out how Taryn-neutral i am. despite everything i've said to defend her, my thought when finishing the series for the first time was exactly that: if Jude can forgive her, then we should be able to, as well. it was a very simple, no bells-and-whistles forgiveness. i think Taryn is extremely interesting, i think her character is poised and ready for a beautiful arc, but i wouldn't trust her as far as i could throw her.
also, i've said this before and i will say it again: Madoc getting every single exemption and grace from the same people who condemn Taryn to shame on main is some kind of bullshit.
the mental gymnastics you'd have to do to say that the dude who continuously tries to manipulate Jude and her actions for his own gain, who continuously patronises/underestimates her throughout the series, and who straight up murdered her parents in cold blood in front of her cos he felt slighted, is more redeemable than a teenage girl who was 1) just trying to survive in a cutthroat world and 2) honestly was just doing what Madoc told her to do? would be laughable if it weren't so damn sad.
this isn't to knock on Madoc, either. i think he's a fantastic villain, an extremely fascinating character, and i love the dynamic between him and Jude. but there's no denying he's done some straight up reprehensible things to all of his daughters. and the lengths some people will go to defend him while at the same time tarnishing Taryn's name is wild to me.
now, i'm not saying people can't dislike a character just because. Taryn is Not a likeable character. so if your opinion of her is "she's just not for me", i think that's valid.
what i am saying, however, is Not Liking Things to the point where you make hate posts using main fandom tags, send people asks demanding they defend why they like a certain character, start discourse in the comments of posts celebrating the character you dislike, is the antithesis of fandom.
fandom is meant to be a joyous celebration of the fictional worlds/characters/things we love. if you don't like something in fiction, that's fine. but the moment you make your poor opinion of something other people's problem is the moment i take issue.
–Em 🖤🗡
p.s. i love and agree with your HC. i think that is an accurate representation of irl sibling dynamics, as well.
In Defence of Taryn Duarte

Do you have recs for other comictok accounts to follow? I'm not brave enough to go in the tags
hell yeah a chance to shout out my beloved mutuals of tiktok
theactorbat— a lot of skit videos but like they're good, not just fanon bastardization, but mostly does DC stuff, but like just some absolutely correct opinions about Batman and Jason Todd
councilofsue—for all my fantastic four stans, her no nuance November videos have really proven that she's the only person with correct opinions about the fantastic four it is a miracle that she follows me
notfranklinsherald (not one of my mutuals fyi)—they've recently had to start a new account, they used to be northstar's left ski or something like that, but antisemitic harassment led to their main account getting banned. Another fantastic four enthusiast but like very vocal about Jewish representation in comics and like they're always right. Honestly, Jewish comic book fans and ff fans are usually a safe bet for good content
madsnotmikkelsen—for the daredevil fans, objectively correct takes. Also her Elektra and Cindy Moon cosplays give me life. her adorable cat really adds to the vibes
comicyehu—another fantastic four fan, but he does other stuff too. like for a man he really does have good character analysis, diving into the emotional drive of characters not just power scaling.
amandajustvibin (also not a mutual)—you are doubtless already following her, not strictly a marvel account, but has some great takes
buellersthought—my brother in arms in spreading the gwenpool gospel, but also he just has a very wholesome and hopeful approach to comics and there is just such a genuine love for the characters and stories. His squirrel girl videos have moved me to tears
dadbadyyy—the only person on that god forsaken app that has a nuanced approach to fanfic I would die for them. Mostly takes about the mcu version of the characters but at least they actually have a complex understanding of the characters
greyleft_ (not a mutual)—kinda inconsistent posting but god I'm obsessed with his Miles videos. I see a into the spiderverse fan and I smash the follow button
nicolemarisela (also not a mutual)—their moon knight cosplays send me into a state good lord have mercy
daystarter— they're mostly focused on the iron mans and captain americas but we are joined in an unending hatred for mcu tony stark
wannabeyourendgame—I'm floored that she follows me tbh, but she always has the latest daredevil news and the most random comic facts at the ready, absolutely obsessed
emptyjunior (not a mutual but it is my one goal on that app to get them to follow me)— THEY ARE THE FUNNIEST PERSON ON THAT HELLISH APP
cholemilla—you're already following her, but we followed each other after I made a video about legally blonde and daredevil so that tells you all you need to know
ahh geez this list has gotten way too long. My following list should be public on tiktok, but I didn't even get into my wonderful editing and art friends so yeah basically follow everyone I follow

Unpopular Book Tag
Answering some unpopular opinion book questions because I think it's fun. Don't come for me <thatsmyopinion.gif>. The creator of this book tag is TheBookArcher on Youtube.
1. A Popular Book or series that you didn't like.
Tumblr media
The Atlas Series
Garbage!! It was garbage! It should be illegal for teenagers to recommend books! If you read this and didn't immediately identify that it was (bad) X-Men fan fiction, then you didn't read it.
2. A Popular Book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.
Tumblr media
Red Queen Series
This series came at the tail end of the "dystopian girl fighting the ruling class" genre, right before it fell out of fashion. And it's widely considered to be a MUCH worse version of Hunger Games/Divergent. But you know what? I fucking loved every book. I thought it was fantastic. Like Hunger Games with superheroes. It was very dark for a YA fantasy, AND it had excellent representation! It should be illegal for anyone other than teenagers to recommend books.
3. A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don't like.
Tumblr media
His Dark Materials - Lyra and Will
Maybe it's a mixture between when it was written and the ages of the kids, but I don't know. The romance between the kids felt extremely forced. I thought their chemistry together worked best when they were acting as a team. I feel as if the motivation to make them in love with each other (again, as children) was an afterthought to drum up the stakes for the end of the series.
4. A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for.
Tumblr media
YA Contemporary
You know, in the past I would have probably said Romance, but I have been reading more romance lately. But there's really nothing that will get me to read any YA at all, much less YA Contemporary. Obviously they're not written for me, but I know a lot of adults who do enjoy these kinds of books. But sometimes I just want to shake someone by the shoulders and say 'I can tell that your literary analysis skills have come solely from YA books and I'm begging you to branch out.'
5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
Tumblr media
Lift - The Stormlight Archives
Oh my god does this character bother me so much. She is aggravating, unfunny, and the writing around her tends to be very poor compared to the rest of the series. I like Stormlight, but it's certainly not my favorite. I'm concerned my interest is going to wane as Lift becomes more prominent.
6. A popular author that you can't seem to get into.
Tumblr media
Matt Haig
Matt Haig stop writing challenge. I have disliked every book he has written and I cannot for the life of me understand why people like him. I find his writing to be basic and his themes to be both heavy handed and underdeveloped. I've resolved to not read anything else from him, but damn, can someone explain why the hell they like him?
7. A popular book trope that you're tired of seeing. (examples "lost princess", corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)
Tumblr media
Books where the book is present in the book
This is so specific and, I admit, irrationally bothersome to me. But I have read several books where the book you're reading is a book in the story. I find it corny and a cop out for better storytelling.
8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.
Tumblr media
A Song of Ice and Fire
I think last time I said Wheel of Time series, which is still the number one series I will absolutely not pick up. But this is a close second. Here's a bonus unpopular opinion. I didn't hate the ending of the show quite as much as most people did. Not because I thought it was good, but because I didn't really care all that much, and I found it to be entertaining for what it was. But with that being said, I will not ever read this series because having watched the show, it wasn't interesting enough for me to want to get the show + dozens more storylines, plot details, and world building.
9. The saying goes "The book is always better than the movie", but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
Tumblr media
The Witcher Series
You want to know something funny? I have not watched the show and probably never will. But I know for a fact that it is better than the books because the books are complete incel garbage with no redeeming qualities. Boring, extremely misogynistic, slow, and basic. The show could literally only be an improvement.

Do you have any thoughts on the use of AAVE for Nile (or lack thereof) in TOG fanfiction? I've been reading some Book of Nile fic and some writers seem to write her as a Millennial™ (using words like "fave" and "woke") but never acknowledge her Blackness in her patterns of speech. I know we don't see her use as much AAVE in the films, but I would argue she's in situations where code-switching would be valued (first in a "professional" environment in the army, then around a group of non-Black strangers).
Hi anon! I have many thoughts on this and I'm honored you asked me! But I should start by saying I'm white and any thoughts Black fans and especially Black American fans have on this that they want to share would be beyond lovely. (I'm not gonna tag anybody bc that feels rude but please add onto this post if any of y'all see this and want to!)
The main reason I personally avoid AAVE for Nile in my own fics is because I'm not Black. But Nile-centric fics by Black writers tend to avoid using much of it too, at least from what I've noticed/understood, and my guess is it's largely for the reason you mention, that she's in situations that encourage code-switching.
In movie canon Nile is highly competent at tailoring her language to each situation she finds herself in. This fantastic linguistics analysis meta shows how skillfully Nile chooses her vocabulary and grammar to meet her goals with different conversation partners in different contexts. In comics canon Nile had a bunch of different civilian jobs before joining the Marines, so she would've had experience code-switching in the ways that made sense for all those different contexts as well as the Marines and her family and high school and wherever else she spent her time before we met her. And now she's spending her time with a handful of immortals none of whom are native English speakers and a fellow Black American but one with a Queen's English UK accent whose professional experience is in the CIA where high-status code-switching is often an absolute must for success or even survival.
Fics featuring Nile are charged with extrapolating from that to how it might show up in her use of language that she's coping with a traumatic separation from her family and her career and pretty much everything she's ever known and now she needs to be able to make herself understood to people who seem to care about her and each other but are super duper in crisis, three (soon to be four) of whom predate Modern English entirely and the only one who's anywhere near her contemporary she's not supposed to talk to for a century. All of these people are telling her that pretty much any contact with any mortals poses an existential threat to her and the rest of the group. How the FUCK is she supposed to cope with that, like, generally? And would it be a more effective way for her to cope if she talked to Andy Joe and Nicky using the speech patterns that she used to use with her mom and brother, to at least retain that part of her identity even if it means having to do a lot of explaining, or would it meet her needs better to prioritize Andy Joe and Nicky understanding what she means with her words over using the particular words and grammar forms she used with her family?
I've seen several fics, both Nile-centric / BoN and otherwise, explore this a little bit in how/whether Nile uses Millennial™ speak. It's often a theme in Nile texting Booker despite the exile because of the popular headcanon that he as The Tech Guy is the only other immortal who understands memes. But Nile's much-younger-than-Booker mom probably uses Boomer and/or Gen X memes and Andy has been adapting to new communication styles for forever as evidenced by her canon high level of fluency with standard-American-accented English.
Which brings us back to people avoiding AAVE because they're not Black and they don't want to make mistakes (or they're not Black and they don't want to get yelled at for making mistakes, though I think many people overestimate how much they'll get yelled at while underestimating how much these mistakes can hurt). I can imagine some Black fans hold back from using much AAVE in fic because they don't want to share in-group stuff with white people who are likely to then adopt and ruin it, as white people so often do with Black cultural stuff. Some links about this including a great Khadija Mbowe video. I'm saying this gently, anon, because you might not know: woke, an example you cited as Millennial™ speak, is AAVE, and that's gotten erased by so many white people appropriating it and using it incorrectly online.
And also there's the part where fandom is a hobby and you never know when you're reading a fic that's the very first thing someone's ever written outside of a school assignment. This cultural considerations of language shit takes a level of effort and skill that not everybody puts into every fic, or even could if they wanted to because they haven't had time to build their skills yet. It's definitely easier for non-Black fans to project our millennial feels onto Nile than to do the layers of research and self-reflection it requires to depict what Blackness might mean to Nile, and it's not surprising that often people sharing their hobby creations on the internet have gone the easier route. There's not even necessarily shame in doing what's easier. It's just frustrating and often hurtful when structural white supremacy means that 3-dimensional Black characters are rare in media and thoughtful explorations of them in fandom are seen by the majority of fans as not-easy to make and therefore Nile Freeman, the main character in The Old Guard (2020) dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood, has the least fic and meta and art made about her of our 5 main immortals.
I've been active in different fandoms off and on for twenty years and I barely managed to write 5,000 words about Sam Wilson across multiple different fics in the 7 years since I fell in love with him. There's an alchemy to which characters we connect with, and on top of that which characters we connect with in a way that causes us to create stuff about them. Something about Nile Freeman finally tipped me over the edge from a voracious reader to a voracious writer. It's not for me to judge which characters speak to other individuals to the level of creating content about them, but I do think it's important for us to notice, and then work to fight, the pattern where across this fandom as a whole Nile gets way less content, and way less depth in so much of the content that's in theory about her, than any of these other characters.
Anyway, back to language. My two long fics feature Nile with several Black friends — Copley and OCs and cameos from other media — but all of those characters except Alec Hardison from Leverage aren't American. It's very possible I'm guilty of stereotyping Black British speech patterns in I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore. I watched hours and hours of Black haircare YouTube videos in the research for that fic and I modeled my OCs' speech patterns on what I heard from some of those YouTubers as well as what I've heard people like John Boyega and Idris Elba saying in interviews, but the thing about doing your best is you still might fuck up.
I'm slowly making progress on my WIP where Nile and Sam Wilson are cousins, and what ways of talking with a family member might be authentic for Nile is a major question I need to figure out. For that, I'm largely modeling my writing choices on how I hear my Black friends and colleagues talking to each other. I haven't overheard colleagues talking in an office in a long-ass time, but back when that was a thing, I remember seeing a ton of nuance in the different ways many of my Black colleagues would talk to each other. Different people have different personalities! And backgrounds! And priorities! A few jobs ago my department was about 1/3 Black and we worked closely with Obama administration staff many of whom were Black and there was SO MUCH VARIETY in how Black people talked to each other, about work and workplace-appropriate personal stuff, where I and other white coworkers could hear. There are a few work friends in particular who I have in my head when I'm trying to imagine how Sam and Nile might talk to each other. From the outside looking in, God DAMN is shit complicated, intellectually and interpersonally and spiritually, for Black people who are devoting their professional lives to public service in the United States.
One more aspect of this that I have big thoughts on but I need to take extra care in talking about is the idea of acknowledging Nile's Blackness in her patterns of speech. There's no one right way to be Black, and Nile's a fictional character created by a white dude but there are plenty of real-life Black Americans who don't use much or even any AAVE, for reasons that are complicated because of white supremacy. (Highly highly recommend this video by Shanspeare on the harms of the Oreo stereotype.)
Something that's not the same but has enough similarity that I think it's worth talking about is my personal experience with authenticity and American Jewish speech patterns. My Jewish family members don't talk like they're in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I've known lots of people who do talk that way (or the millennial version of it), some of whom have questioned my Jewishness because I don't talk that way. That hurts me. Sometimes when another Jew tells me some shit like "I've never heard a Jew say y'all'd've," I can respond with "well now you have asshole, bless your Yankee-ass heart," because the myth of Dixie is a racist lie but I will totally call white Northerners Yankees when they're being shitty to me for being Southern, and this particular Jew fucking revels in using "bless your heart" with maximum polite aggression, especially with said Yankees. But sometimes I don't have it in me to say anything and it just quietly hurts having an important part of me disbelieved by someone who shares that important part of me. The sting isn't quite the same when non-Jews disbelieve or discount my Jewishness, but that hurts too.
Who counts as authentically Jewish is a messy in-group conversation and it doesn't really make sense to explain it all here. Who counts as authentically Jewish is a matter of legal status for immigration, citizenship, and civil rights in Israel, and it's my number 2 reason after horrific treatment of Palestinians that I'm antizionist. But outside that extremely high-stakes legal situation, it can just feel really shitty to not be recognized as One Of Us, especially by your own people.
It can also feel really shitty to be The Only One of Your Kind in a group, even if that group is an immortal chosen family who all loves each other dearly. Sometimes especially in a situation like that where you know those people love you but there are certain things they don't get about you and will never quite be able to. I'm definitely projecting at least a little bit of my "lonely Jew who will be alone again for yet another Jewish holiday" stuff onto Nile when at the end of I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore she's thinking about being the only Black immortal and moving away from the community she'd built with a mostly-Black group of mortals in that fic. Maybe that tracks, or maybe that's fucked up of me.
Basically, this got very long but it's complicated, writing about experiences that aren't your own takes skill which in turn takes time and practice to build, writing about experiences not your own that our society maligns can cause a lot of harm if done badly, it can also cause a lot of harm when a large enough portion of a fandom just decides to nope out of something that's difficult and risky because then there's just not much content about a character who deserves just a shit ton of loving and nuanced content, people are individuals and two people who come from the exact same cultural context might show that influence in all kinds of different ways, identity is complicated, language is complicated, writing is hard, and empathy and humility and doing our best aren't a guarantee of avoiding harm but they do go a long way in helping people create thoughtful content about a character as awesome and powerful and kind and messy and scared and curious and WORTHY as Nile Freeman.

Please stop putting Rwde in the main tags holy shit. Blocked tags dont work on trending tags
Okay, today we're going to have a talk about curating your own content online. This isn’t the first time I’ve had an anon, somewhat angrily, demand that I stop using the “RWBY” tag and I’m sure it won’t be the last. However, my answer remains the same: No. Sorry. I’m not going to stop. Why?
Because my posts are about RWBY.
In case the above isn’t answer enough, let’s do a quick FAQs.
Why are you using the “RWBY” tag when so many of your posts are critical?
Because, as said, my posts are about RWBY. That’s the subject. I’ve been in the RWBY tumblr fandom for over five years now. I want all my RWBY content accessible in one place on my blog, not divided up between praise posts, critical posts, fanart, fic, etc. If an easy division between the first two is even possible (which it's not). It’s just all RWBY and, oddly enough, when I started reblogging and posting here, I tagged it with “RWBY.” Because that’s the show. My tagging system is far from complex, but I’m not about to re-organize or switch up 228 pages of content.
But we decided a long time ago that critical posts shouldn’t go in the main tag.
That’s ridiculous. People realize that’s ridiculous, right? I mean, I know we've all mostly agreed to observe this self-imposed rule, but that doesn't mean I haven't been raising an eyebrow at it since it first came up. I’ve been in a lot of fandoms and I’ve never seen another that insisted only praise could go in the main tag. When you come on tumblr and want to look up RWBY posts, you expect to get everything about RWBY—any post that deals with that subject. I would stake a great deal on the assumption that there are other posts in the main tag that you dislike, anon, simply because that's how people work. We all don't like the same things and, indeed, in a long-running show with a massive cast, there's going to be stuff we hate too. Ships you can't stand, takes you think are awful, that character you’re just so sick of seeing… yet we don’t exclude other, major subjects from the tag just because certain individuals dislike them. If we did, there would be no “RWBY” search because no one would ever agree on what is and is not allowed.
You have “RWDE” though.
We do! And as evidenced by the post you’re upset with, I use it when I think it's warranted. Here’s the thing about “RWDE” though: no one can agree on that either. Some fans think “RWDE” is solely for the angry, curse-laden posts. Others think it’s only for posts that are 100% critical. Others think it’s for ranting critical posts, not analysis critical posts. Still others think it’s for posts that say anything bad about RWBY, no matter if other parts of the post are complimentary or neutral—with "bad" ranging from "Actively insulting aspects" to "I didn't praise this enough to the individual's liking." It's so subjective as to be almost useless, to the point where "RWDE" posters are currently upset that others are posting critical takes about "RWDE" takes. Where do we draw the lines then? Your guess is as good as mine. But the one time I tried to post solely in “RWDE,” I was getting different anons going, “Omg stop posting in rwde this isn’t rwde!” So… my posts are apparently too critical for “RWBY” and, often, not critical enough for “RWDE.” Fantastic.
Just create your own unique tag then.
On the social media website where we post specifically to have other people interact with our work? You may not like my posts, anon, but other people do. “RWBY” is useful in part because it allows like-minded people to find me. If I only used a unique tag, I’d never come up in searches. Besides, I already do have a unique tag: “mymetas.” Every critical RWBY post of mine has that attached. Thus, it’s your job to blog “RWDE,” “mymetas,” or me entirely.
I tried that though and tumblr’s blocking system didn’t work for [insert reason here]
I really am sorry to hear that, it sucks, but tumblr’s shoddy system is not my fault—nor my responsibility. And now we come to the part about curating our online experience. Sometimes it’s not just about blocking everything because the system itself is flawed. Often you have to go further by scrolling past.
I'm going to say that again because people really need to practice it more on tumblr: scroll past the content you don't like.
If you don’t like a post, don’t read it. If you start reading a post and realize you don’t like it, stop and go find something else you enjoy. Being a responsible fan online often means going, “Huh. I hate that” and moving on, not coming into the author’s inbox to demand that they—impossibly—ensure that you never have to see something you hate ever again. Anon, you spent more time with something you claim to dislike by coming into my inbox to write and send a message demanding that I stop using "RWBY" than you would have by simply ignoring my post and moving on. That tells me you care more about controlling others' online experience than you do managing your own.
But we don’t want to see critical takes in the “RWBY” tag! We come on tumblr because we love the show and it sucks to see people dragging it all the time. I just want to enjoy the show in peace.
A valid stance… and one that doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to RWBY. Between the time I posted about the teaser and the time I saw this ask, two hours had passed and a hundred and four new posts had appeared in “RWBY." I know because I took the time to count. The RWBY critical community is absolutely miniscule compared to the rest of the fandom. There are maybe 2-7 new “RWDE” posts a day, max, and those are coming from a few key blogs that focus on analyzing the show. There is no scenario in which there are so many critical posts that it’s ruining your RWBY time on tumblr, simply because that amount of critical content doesn’t exist. And if seeing a single critical take from my blog—or even 2-4, because that's my own max per day—honestly upsets you to the extent that you can't just move on, you shouldn’t be on a website known for its diverse content and incredibly iffy blocking system. My posts exist in a sea of RWBY excitement, praise, and celebration. It is your job to scroll past, anon, not my job to play a subjective, rigged game to ensure you never brush past a single bit of seaweed in that massive, ever-expanding ocean.
What this argument comes down to is, “You’re not allowed to tag RWBY content with RWBY because I don’t like what you have to say.” Sorry, but that just doesn't work for me.

Friendly reminder that 8flix isn't a massive corporation, it's literally just the one dude maintaining the archive as an educational resource. So him engaging with a fanbase that has shown immense interest in his archive is a really good way to keep up the donations that fund it and to expose more people to the existence of this kind of resource. I am pretty firmly of the opinion that the tweets aren't trying to pull a fast one on you.
So thanks Nick, it's very cool of you to take an interest in this little corner of the fanbase!

I think one of the biggest signs that people do not understand why byler is as popular as it is is when they say "Will deserves a better boyfriend thought :/" ..... Like If I were to say "El deserves better than Mike......I think she should get with Lucas" the angry m*leven shippers would literally eat me alive because those two ships aren't even remotely close to being the same thing.
Do they think we literally just ship Mike and Will because they're both dudes?? Why did I add a question mark to that when I know that is exactly what people think. Y'know because despite not all straight relationships being basically the same thing because different characters have different relationships and dynamics with other characters.....any ship that is gay is basically interchangeable and the people involved don't matter at all -_-
Mike and Will are two characters with a lot of history and their friendship is a major motivating factor for both of them throughout the whole show. They're two insecure kids that trust each other enough to let their walls down, something which we routinely see them try to avoid with other people.... People ship Mike and Will because they're Mike and Will, and implying that replacing one half of the relationship with a minor character that serves basically no other role in the story should be viewed as an improvement is infuriating.

Season 3 on the surface: Mike being so in love with El that he acts like an asshole to everyone else and this is never really resolved.
Season 3 cinematography and subtext: Just the creators banging two pans together and yelling "Mike's gay and in love with Will" while progressively getting louder and louder as the season goes on.

My #1 post of 2022
Think it’s really interesting how they took the time to both establish that Vickie is not straight and suggest she reciprocates Robin’s feelings while also making sure the audience knows she has a boyfriend and literally have Steve comment about how it doesn’t make sense.
The show literally goes out of it’s way to have the actual characters pick up on hints that Vickie is not straight and is constantly using film techniques to make sure we as an audience understand that. The show emphasizes that someone dating the opposite sex does not make them straight, and has multiple shots with Vickie and Robin parallel byler scenes this season…..
They literally spelled it out for us I don’t know what else to say

In this series we take a look at the romantic relationships Dr. Strange has had in the past. These will be all NON-CANON relationships. I’ll be providing an in-depth analysis of both characters, but mostly an emphasis on where it left Dr. Strange in the end.
This week we’ll be looking at the kind of life Mysterio and Dr. Strange had together.
Currently workshopping the shipname: strangesterio?
[Also note, we can tag this as a ship, but in the end it is a fairly toxic one]
Please note the following warnings before reading. Also, sections will be broken up into headers.
Current word count: ~1,800
[WARNINGS: slight mentions of domestic violence (verbal/emotional/mental abuse)]
[Further reading: We briefly got to talk about their relationship in this post here where I described Mysterio’s impact on Dr. Strange’s gender experience]
Timeline
I think it’s important to establish a timeline now for when certain relationships/meetings took place on this blog. I do talk about this in the analysis, but not too specifically.
In case people needed specific comic issues where these meetings may have taken place, I can at least say that this relationship would have occured before The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #13.
This relationship also happened BEFORE Stephen met Clea. Yes, I will be using Clea as a pointer 🤣
Before they met
If you didn’t already know, Mysterio was a regular civilian before he became a supervillain. He was an incredibly accomplished special effects artist, which included a lot of skill within the art/film industry. Unfortunately, like any other Marvel character, his genius made him arrogant, and eventually that caused him to have some issues on set and one fatal incident blacklisted him from Hollywood forever.
For Doctor Strange, he was a newly appointed Sorcerer Supreme. He recently stepped out of the shadows to partner with other teams in the superhero community such as the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and more prominently, the Avengers. Dr. Strange was slowly beginning to make a name for himself.
After being thrown out of Hollywood, Quentin Beck came to New York for a new life. He was still practicing his skills, but he wanted to improve even further. He heard about Dr. Strange and was in love with the potential of using ‘magic’ in combination with his special effects, so Quentin was already drawn toward Dr. Strange from the very beginning.
To find the sorcerer, Quentin did some heavy research. Going into Dr. Strange’s past, back to when he was a surgeon, to methodically track down where the doctor could have ended up in New York.
How they met
During this research, Quentin found some magical items of his own, and started to mess with them to see if he could harness their power. These items were apparently dangerous enough that Dr. Strange had to intervene before Quentin could hurt himself.
This confrontation occurred at Quentin’s apartment, and Dr. Strange made a huge fuss over it. To Dr. Strange, it's absolutely a big deal when normal people get their hands on such powerful items. Since these items were volatile magical artifacts, they needed to be under a professional sorcerer’s supervision.
Quentin didn’t mind being scolded, he was happy that Dr. Strange came to him which cut his search short! While Dr. Strange was in his presence, Quentin used this meeting as a learning opportunity. Even though Dr. Strange was still irritated, he saw Quentin’s will to learn, and agreed to teach Quentin a little bit more about magic.
It wasn’t everyday that Dr. Strange did this for a regular civilian, but he felt as though he was doing a great service to the community by letting at least one regular person know some insider secrets. Magical literacy is important after all!
So it begins
After that fateful day, Quentin had become one irregular regular guest at the sanctum. We could possibly call Quentin a student of the mystic arts, after all, Dr. Strange was trying to teach him some bits of magic.
And during this time it’s important to note that Quentin was not the only person who regularly visited Dr. Strange. As you know, Dr. Strange was building his relationships with a ton of people in the superhero community such as the Scarlet Witch, Nightcrawler, and even Zatanna! You can read more about their backstories here. They of course were not meeting in the sanctum at the same time Quentin was. So there weren’t any confrontations. Not at first, anyway.
As Dr. Strange taught Quentin, he learned about the man’s background. How he used to serve as a big name in Hollywood, and when they became closer, how he fell off of Hollywood. Surprisingly, Quentin was a very competent student. Dr. Strange saw much of himself in Quentin because he soaked up new information like a sponge. Quentin, like Dr. Strange when he first learned the mystic arts, was not too interested in learning how magic could help people. Quentin simply took the information Dr. Strange gave him and did his own personal research on how effective magic could be on film sets. We can talk about Quentin’s exploration and specific scenarios in other posts.
I could say that they were doing this for about a month, and shortly after, they started to get a little cozy.
Dr. Strange was as comfortable with Quentin’s presence as he was with any of his other students. They started to do more than just have lessons. They shared meals together, went out to eat, and even took walks in the park. Quentin even shared the fact that he was transgender man.
These small secrets eventually led them to start dating each other. They knew one another on a personal level, so the transition to this kind of relationship was quite easy.
Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch were not as close to Dr. Strange as they are now, so Stephen did not make this relationship any of their business. Wong on the other hand had no prior concerns and just carefully watched Quentin from a distance.
Quentin and Stephen were maybe a couple weeks into the dating scene until a few red flags started to show up. Both became busier with work, for one. As we know, Dr. Strange has a tendency to shut everyone out when his work becomes too heavy. He also had several kinds of mental illnesses that he did not share with Quentin. While Dr. Strange was dealing with those problems, Quentin was on his own. He too was busy with work.
Since Quentin had finally run out of the money he saved from his stardom in Hollywood, he secretly craved the vigilante lifestyle that a few superheroes had. Dr. Strange was a rare case, so he was not inspired by him, he was more so inspired by Spider-Man.
Towards the end of his career in Hollywood, Quentin gradually became interested in the growing superhero community but mostly in Spider-Man. In his time away from Dr. Strange, he developed an obsessive personality and began studying Spider-Man’s tricks. Part of the reason why he became obsessed with the superhero idea was because it was what took Stephen away from him. Finding a way to get on a superhero’s level, power-wise at least, was one of his goals to become closer to Stephen.
Eventually, Quentin was able to replicate all of Spidey’s abilities on his own. As we know in The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #13, Quentin began masking himself in Spider-Man’s costume and committing crimes. The money from these crimes was used for rent and medical needs. But he mostly continued to do it for the thrill.
Spider-Man committing crimes shook the civilian and superhero community, and Dr. Strange didn’t even know that the person behind it was sleeping in his bed.
The stress of working was beginning to get to both of them. Quentin’s turn to a life of crime wasn’t helping either. Eventually, Quentin got tired of Stephen ignoring him all the time and started to fight back. As I previously talked about in this post, Quentin had a background of self-hate, and he knew that Stephen was going through a sensitive time, so he used both their pain to his advantage.
Quentin tended to pick small verbal fights, riling Stephen up on purpose, then hitting him with personal secrets that only Stephen would tell those closest to him. It killed Stephen, hearing that from someone he had loved.
These fights pushed Stephen into a deeper depression. He was in a recovery phase for a lot of the issues he had, but now he was worse off because he was never dealing with a loved one who was worsening his situation.
Wong had begun to loathe Quentin, and Wong’s influence was part of the reason why Stephen decided to break up with Quentin. Prior to these fights, when Stephen and Quentin were beginning to get a bit more intimate, Stephen did tell Wanda and Kurt that he was seeing someone special. But once things got bad, he did not tell them anything further than that.
Eventually, Stephen couldn’t take it anymore and threw Quentin out of the sanctum. He also confiscated all of the magic items he had given Quentin as past gifts for being such a good student.
Shortly after, Quentin became Mysterio and was caught by Spider-Man, exposed as the one who was framing Spider-Man from all those prior crimes.
Where are they now?
In the present day, Dr. Strange had never relapsed and gone back to Quentin Beck. Not even on a lonely Friday night.
It’s extremely important for you to know that not only was Mysterio Stephen’s first romantic relationship with a man, he was also the very first transgender man he ever dated. But it would not be his last.
While their relationship turned very sour very fast, it also had a lasting impact on both Dr. Strange and Mysterio.
Mysterio’s obsession with Spider-Man is sometimes extended to Dr. Strange. Mysterio is under this illusion that he’s still in love with Stephen whenever the doctor is brought up. It’s like a mix of love and reverence. From time to time, Mysterio does hang around the sanctum, just to see if Dr. Strange would step out. He never got over their sudden break up, and he would totally go back to him if Dr. Strange asked him to.
Talking about Mysterio with Spider-Man is a sensitive subject. When Dr. Strange and Spider-Man became friends to the point where Spider-Man knew all the dark sensitive information about his life Stephen told him about his time with Mysterio. There are a couple scenarios about this, but we can talk about that too in other posts.
As usual if there is anything that was unclear in this analysis that you would like me to expand upon I can edit this post or I can create a separate one if you send in an ask. Asks of course, are recommended for this type of thing. My DMs are also open for further questions.

I got so excited seeing you post about Succession, I am absolutely obsessed with everything about that show from the writing, to the performances, to Kendall fucking Roy. Would love to hear any of your takes or analysis on the Roy siblings.
Oh my gosh, me too, anon. I'd been watching the eps a few at a time and when I got halfway through s2, I started watching them one at a time just because I didn't want it to end! It's been a crazy long time since I've done that, and it was such an invigorating feeling to enjoy a show that much to want to draw it out again. I finished s2 a few days ago and am halfway through a rewatch already, haha, and I am SO. HYPED. for s3.
It's so well written and like you said, the performances are top-notch (Jeremy Strong ridiculously deserved his Emmy last year, oh my god), and just the pay off with plotlines and character arcs is unreal, even if that pay off often hurts. I think it does such a great job of showing how filthy rich they are too, but making no part of their life aspirational? Which is a hard line to walk. They're all so miserable and traumatised and disconnected and lonely and they're destined to stay that way because they have no emotional tools to do or be otherwise. It hurts, but it's so frequently what they deserve too, and that gets so tangled up and twisted. I love it.
And man, the Roy kids!! Putting some broadstrokes analysis / opinions under the cut, because omg, I feel like I'll be talking for 1,200 years otherwise, haha.
Connor Roy
Legit obsessed tbh. When I was growing up, my mum was a huge Spin City fan, so she used to park me and my sister on the floor in front of it with toys while she watched, and as a result I think I have this really warm response to Alan Ruck, haha. He's fantastic in this, and lends the right amount of vulnerability to Connor.
I love that there's this push-pull with him as kind of an outsider, but also not? Like he's there at the table, to borrow the phrase from Tom, but there's very much this feeling that it's a courtesy or formality to Logan's previous family (and god, I'm dying to know more about his mum / Logan's first wife), but that doesn't stop this deep rooted need that Connor shares with his siblings for their father's validation.
I think a lot about what Connor says to Kendall in the s1 finale about how anyone can have a million dollars, but right now, with Logan's empire, they're somebody. It's this sort of tangled disconnect from reality (anyone can have a million dollars??) but also his desire to be seen broadly, but more specifically seen as Logan's son, that I feel really grounds Connor's arc, and I feel like he's just going to get louder and louder about it, especially with his presidential run getting closer.
Kendall Roy
Okay, okay, okay, I know that he's an absolute nightmare and a terrible human, but oh my goooooddddd, I love him as a character. I saw it in somebody's tags on a gifset, but I love this set-up where Logan keeps Kendall on the shortest leash, but it's a leash all of his siblings, despite themselves, want to be on. That's awful, but so indicative of the toxic way that Logan's raised his children.
There's also a great quote from Jeremy Strong somewhere, and I can't find it now, but to paraphrase, he said that the whole family is raised on this idea of strength and power, and Kendall's sort of a case study in strength not being his native language. It's so true, and I think Kendall's smart and resourceful and quick on his feet, but he's also so often desperately trying to wear a costume of who he thinks he should be.
I don't think he's weak (in fact, I think he's really resiliant), but he's definitely a fragile character and an addict, who nakedly needs nurturing that no one is willing to give him, least of all his mother (which, god, that scene when he tries to talk to her in the UK destroyed me) so instead he pretends to mould himself into the perceived image of his father and fails every time.
It's brutal to watch, especially when you see other characters know that and use it to manipulate him. Hell, his own father pretends to nurture and protect him (and I think kind of genuinely does too? But it's so warped?) the whole of s2, and it brings Kendall closer than ever before. It's painful, and affecting, and it's just this manifestation of trauma in a hopeless, cringe-inducing package, haha.
Roman Roy
Another nightmare baby I tragically love, hahaha. I actually think Roman's had one of the most interesting arcs on the show and one of the few that seems to be positive? Like his tendency to not take anything seriously so that he never truly fails was pretty fun in the first season, but to see that evolve into someone who's green but has great gut instincts, and is good when he lets himself be and when he lets himself try, is really invigorating narratively, especially as the other characters all slip further down morally and/or stagnate.
I'm loving the way that it's sort of cannibalising itself though too with him and Geri's relationship suddenly, um, pivoting, hahaha, and especially the way she's honed in on him getting off on being demeaned. There's something really fun about the one character clawing his way up masturbating to being told exactly how low he is.
Plus Kieran Culkin is a gem.
Shiv Roy
Sarah!! Snook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had a huge crush on her since Not Suitable for Children so was already totally delighted to see her in this, but oh my god, she's so good, and Shiv is so awful in so many wonderful ways. I love that she's kind of like Kendall in the way she pendulums between extreme competence and the most mortifying self-sabotage, and the way she's a very specific sort of insecure. Logan never asked her, y'know? Not really, and the way she knows she's his favourite, but knows that being his favourite without the validation of succession doesn't mean anything.
In a lot of ways, she encapsulates the show's themes and Logan's abuse in the best way, because she has what her brothers want. Her father loves her more openly than he does any of them, but that love isn't enough, because Logan's made sure it never will be. It's not a true love after all, because Logan loves them, but he loves none of them more than himself and his legacy, and being given the latter is what they've all been convinced will make them happy when it never will.
Nothing will.
It's just so good and so painful, and I'm in love with it all.

wow the amount of bad takes about jgy in his tag are so ??? and the number of people who write jgy's love for lxc as being unrequited in his own tag is also ?? and gleeful and borderline sadistic? like why do my boy dirty like that 🥺🥺🥺
It's the worst!!!!
There are so many. Soooooo so many. And yes, the unrequited thing too!!!! Like, sad unrequited is...well, let's say I very much disagree with unrequited as a reading of canon, but you do you, but there really is a lot that's just spiteful to JGY!!!! Or god I don't know if you've ever gone browsing the xiyao the on the ao3 but if you /don't/ add otp: true to the search results you get some truly ridiculous stuff all over the place—so much past abusive JGY xiyao, for example. Which is a) nonsense and b) tagged with xiyao in relationships instead of additional tags why exactly?
I think....part of it is that people can sense CQL is incomplete, and they want to fill in those gaps. Which is fine and great!!! But they want to fill them in with like—oh, very much Evil JGY and Righteous NMJ, and so forth, and I think that's a bad extrapolation from CQL canon (people really have a hard time remembering that NMJ is against the Wen, yes even in CQL) and often it's just really not supported by MDZS. Which—I mean, complications of 'sometimes you have to read MDZS in to CQL to make it make any sense' and 'almost everyone does some reading in' aside, you certainly don't have to, but I think people...like, fill in JGY mistreating LXC and then treat is as the One True Canon.
Which I mean. I don't mean to imply you don't get some truly awful takes from novel people, too. *bitter laughter* The takes I have seen.... I don't want to get too specific and vague people but yeah I've seen some truly awful purely novel-based takes, too.
Oh and then there's fucking Fatal Journey. If you have been around you probably know my opinion on Fatal Journey. I really do not like it and I think the degree to which it wildly misrepresents the characters and their situations is...not appreciated. I'll tell you this, when I watched it I spent a lot of time exclaiming so that's where that totally unsupported idea comes from! E.g. the idea that the music was supposed to entirely cure NMJ.... Every time I see a post that's just like "and JGY decides not to kill NMJ, so he survives!!!" it's very....sigh. I mean, even aside from the thing where JGS and JGY's circumstances are being completely ignored.
I think there's also something where like....people really REALLY want the ending to be about, you know, people getting their just deserts. WWX got a happy ending because he is morally correct in such-and-such a fashion! JGY got his bad one because he's evil!!!! Etc.
And beyond that people...want it to just be a happier ending than it actually is. I think part of it is CQL's ending...and part of the problem I have there is that if one man interested in good at the top can fix things, which seems to be like the emotional implication, then it's a pretty straightforward inference that JGY wasn't interested in good...but some of it is just people. But JGY's downfall is bad, actually!! Even just—well, consider this bit from the Iron Hook extra, from ch 123:
The guard didn’t report to the real sect leader at all, but instead to another senior of the LanlingJin Sect’s. When the senior heard, he was infuriated by the fact that such an ordinary merchant would dare step on the golden stairs of the LanlingJin Sect’s, ordering him to chase the visitor out. Yet, it was interrupted by Jin Ling, who was just about to head to the hunting grounds.
Jin Ling knew that these seniors of the sect were all quite full of pride, believing that they were a sect hundreds of years old. No matter what, they definitely couldn’t lower their prestige, refusing to welcome anyone who wasn’t of eminent personage. First of all, he’d always abhorred such a way of doing things; second of all, he was mad that the guard reported to somebody else directly, ignoring him completely; and third of all, he remembered that when Jin GuangYao was still here, no disciples of even guest cultivators dared to take bribery so easily.
This is very much the opposite of what people want to be true about JGY!!! I'm just over here like...look, I'm certainly not going to tell you you have to stick with canon, but if it offends you so profoundly I.... really don't know what to tell you....
(wanting it to be happier than it actually is is part of why people also have really weird takes about LXC post-canon, I think.)
Honestly it's really exhausting!!! People absolutely post in the JGY tag to just. Talk about how much they hate him. Talk about other characters hating him. "Jokes" that are just oooh, NMJ is going to do so much violence to him. Suggesting that he's inherently evil. Suggesting that he's inherently evil because he chooses JGS over his many many options including the people who love him, NMJ and LXC.... Which, you know, even aside from the many many problems with that analysis, even if it were true wanting your dad to love you is like. Not actually pure evil. And also it's a shitty analysis of his situation! So hey.
I've mentioned before the way people seem to want the cultivation world to be not only way better and more progressive and safe and so forth than it actually is, but way better and more progressive and safe and etc than the modern States! It's really something.
Also a whole bunch of vibes that are like, ngl, how /dare/ JGY want to improve his position in the world, how dare he want to be anything other than a servant, doesn't he know his place.... funnnnnn times.
Oh and of course people taking the Empathy framing uncritically—in CQL the straight-up different version of events, in MDZS the way it's interpreted through NMJ's anger which WWX can also feel... Like, look at this section from chapter 50:
Jin GuangYao was, at the moment, complaining to Lan XiChen, yet just last night he had been all soft and innocent as he talked with Nie MingJue, playing the guqin. Hearing how Jin GuangYao spoke ill of him behind his back, Nie MingJue burned with anger and kicked the door open. The raging flames within his head traveled throughout the entirety of his body. A thunder-like roar exploded in the air, “How dare you!”
People will read this and conclude JGY was in the wrong and NMJ was totally reasonable in his anger here. I?????? Like. He is literally about to try and kill JGY on the spot, to be clear. Also the last time JGY talked back to him he also tried to kill him. I just. What. Framing is framing but please think about this for like five seconds.
Anyway yeah it's exhausting and it sucks :( I think a lot of us pro-JGY people don't even post in the tags....man.
My position is that JGY is amazing, actually, and that it's best not only for him but for the people around him that he becomes Jin-zongzhu and Jin-xiandu 🥰 Seriously he's fantastic, no one else does what he does or would even think to try.
