hi!! i saw your other post about how you simplify details and it was really helpful - was wondering if you had any tips abt drawing expressions/poses to express a story/emotions. like i saw your recent sumeru char doodles on twt and the way you draw alhaitham and hungover kaveh is so!!! ahh!! all of the lines feel really intentional, from the expressions to the fabric of the clothing and omg i love it so much. anyways sorry for rambling HAHA thank you sm for sharing your art! gl w art school 💪

Thank you so much for the lovely words <3 it's really such a honor to hear that so many people consider my art to be very expressive, which I think is an essential skill to have for storytelling in comics!

First of all, I'd like to say this isn't something I can easily answer... you must already know there's no easy step-by-step guide on how to be "good" at art or expressions or whichever aspect you're trying to improve, the answer will always be observation and practice. However, I can tell you some of my methods I use to make sure emotions are conveyed as efficiently as possible(?). Here are the key points I always try to apply (note that these aren't rules, these are just my guiding points):

Understanding the character(s), the context, and how the two work together

Laying down a foundation

Not letting dialogue be the main driving force behind storytelling

Paneling conveys emotion too, actually

The absence of something can also convey emotion

You didn't specifically ask about comics, but since it's my favorite subject and it ties into your question, I'll be using a lot of examples from the comics I made! And it might interest other people who were curious?

VERY long post ahead :)

1. Understanding the character(s), the context, and how the two work together

This is what I think is the most fundamental part of storytelling! I mean, makes sense, right? Obviously you don't need a PhD in The Character to make stories based off them. I literally cannot tell you every detail about my favorite characters despite loving them very much, but I think understanding them and their relationships on a big-picture level is primordial. What drives them, what are their principles, what are their biggest fears, who do they make exceptions for, etc. Also, to me, understanding their relationships is sometimes more important than understanding the character at a molecular level. We can tell so much about someone just from the way they interact with specific people vs how they interact with strangers. The person I am online isn't the same I am with friends nor even with family-- like one of the reasons some characters can feel one-dimensional is because they don't show variation in their character throughout their relationships (and since you mentioned Kaveh and Alhaitham, I don't need to tell you the way both of them interact with each other is far removed from the way they interact with friends, strangers, etc... I think a lot of people forget who they are outside of their relationship, which a huge point of contention behind mischaracterization in fan works). I don't have much to say about this other than this is something I keep in mind every step of the way through.

2. Laying down a foundation

This is what the majority of my comics look like on second draft:

I said second because the first drafts usually look like this, which are barely comprehensible to anyone but myself:

The purpose of these are not only to give me a better guide for posing than whatever i did on the first draft (storyboard), but also have a first pass at motion and emotion. The expressions and gestures are legible enough that you can probably glean the emotions of each character based off the little sketches. Ultimately, some of the things I'll draft will end up adjusted, changed, expanded on or even removed.

This particular panel of Reigen is a favorite of mine, because the first pass already shows his confusion, but the final one is even more distorted because it felt like it needed to be even more accentuated.

This panel where he mansplains is also a good example, because the first pass gave him too much of an arrogant/uninterested look (notable with his upturned face), whereas Reigen is more likely to take pride in explaining something he knows to make himself look like a wise and mature figure (notable with his slight smirk and downturned face, as if nodding to himself; the hand is also slightly more forward as if inviting rather than dismissing). And since I basically made an example of it above: body language is super important! This applies for everyone. It doesn't stop at characters who make grand gestures and exaggerated poses every waking moment of their life, but also characters who are socially awkward, private, reclusive...

The posing here is intentionally stiff but not entirely closed off, giving the sense that he's earnest, tries his best to make connections , but also doesn't want to take too much space, thinking the smallest wrong move could cause trouble. Also, give room for the body to do its thing. Avoid cropping out things that shouldn't be cropped out. Leave enough room between the edges of the panel and the point of focus to emphasize what you want to emphasize. Close-up shots shouldn't be too frequent (in fact, personally I don't like doing close-up shots but it doesn't mean they're bad or shouldn't be done, again, my word isn't gospel!), especially if what you're conveying isn't too emotionally charged. Lastly, I have terrible news for people who hate drawing hands. Hands are possibly the second most expressive part of our body (if we don't count the body as a whole), so especially for your charismatic characters, you will very often want to use hands as a tool of expression.

(Think how much emotion and personality would be lost if the hands weren't there!)

3. Not letting dialogue be the main driving force behind storytelling

With my comics, I play an incredibly dangerous game called "I'll think of dialogue as I make the storyboard and then when I'm done drawing every page I'll write the dialogue over it guided solely by memory and whatever I drew". Don't do this. Have a script in hand or write it at the same time as you draft your storyboard. The reason I do this is because I'm lazy and I don't want to open a simple writing software to type down a script. Genuinely I have no other reasons. Anyway, the only advantage this gives to my comics is that they will generally be able to stand on their own without much dialogue; obviously dialogue is essential, but what I mean is that we don't need it to have a pretty accurate read on the room.

For example, if I remove all the dialogue from this page, you probably can't guess exactly what's being discussed. However, you can identify through their emotions alone that there is disbelief, bargaining, and finally a pretty devastating info was dropped. Alternatively, cutting down dialogue from your page and leaving room to expressions/body language alone can be entirely more beneficial than having any dialogue to begin with.

AKA Readers aren't stupid (some may be, but the majority can extrapolate just fine). You'll realize how much you don't need words and how your stories can be even more funny/impactful by pushing forward visual storytelling.

4. Paneling conveys emotion too, actually

Being a "good" artist isn't enough to make good comics. The way you panel things is extremely important, because it sets the tone, mood, pace, you name it. Some of the best works out there are the ones with the most care put into the flow of the comic. You need to understand how people will read it, and it starts with what order you deliver the information and how. This is paneling 101, but a page with irregularly shaped panels, multiple changing camera angles and such will be exponentially more dynamic than a page where each panel is the same size, have similar compositions and/or repetitions with little to no diagonal or curved lines of action.

The two examples above are WIPs from 2 different stories so unfortunately you'll have to make do with the rough sketches. That being said, you don't need to know the context of either pages to know the kind of emotion that should be felt through the paneling alone. Give time for the important emotions to be processed by the reader (unless it's intentionally fast-paced). Every emotion that needs to be emphasized should have its own panel.

In this example, I could easily have condensed these two panels into one by transferring the dialogue from the second into the first and jumping on to the next action. However, it would undeniably give much less impact to Kaveh's disbelief. On an inverse situation, sometimes you will want to condense two panels you made into one, because whatever those two panels are doing are perhaps not important enough to deserve separate panels! Lastly, you can notice that the space on the page is not always filled. Leaving space between each panel and/or between the edges of the page gives room for the reader to breathe and slows down the flow; and inversely, if you want to make the situation more frantic, make everything look more tight and constricted.

5. Not showing facial expressions sometimes conveys more emotion than doing so

This ties nicely to the point I made about body language. You don't need to see a character's face to know what they're going through, necessarily. Sometimes, their posture or their dialogue is enough. In my opinion, a story is more compelling when this equilibrium of facial expressions / body language / paneling / dialogue is correctly adjusted-- you will not need to have all the elements to convey the message or it could be a little overbearing. I don't have many examples for this one because they tend to be more relevant in dramatic scenarios, which I haven't done that many of.

And that's about it for my insane guide on comic-ing. I hope ANY of it made sense.

Here's a round up of extra tips, focused entirely on the drawing part which might be more of what you asked to begin with :'D

- That little line/wrinkle that adds so much character

Yall know what I'm talking about. In my opinion, too many artists are afraid of giving laugh lines/wrinkles because it makes their characters look older, except when it's to add those sexy sexy eyebags. I'm encouraging everyone to add them to their art little by little and see how much it can improve the expressiveness! Obviously, I don't use it everywhere, but it's a very effective way to make your expressions feel even more... well. expressive.

- Line of action

You've probably seen this picture going around before, from Preston Blair:

Although it's called line of action which implies action, this line is important even when the character isn't really in action.

You can gain a lot in expressiveness when you think of the body as one whole fluid instead of a sum of multiple disjointed parts. This is why drawing a very rough base comprised of only lines and circles can help figure out if the posing works before you start refining it.

On a different note, animation principles work very much in comics as well! I recommend looking up animation guides especially those that show how to make key poses.

- Shadows and/or color fill

This is one I will use quite often for different situations.

Shadows can immediately set a tone when they're used dramatically. For example, a shadow over a character's face can convey unease and/or evil intent.

On the other hand, I will use color fills for different purposes:

Differentiating ground layers

This can help with readability.

2. Conveying a certain mood

It can separate the character from the color of their background to give a sense of isolation, reflection, realization, being disconnected from their surroundings, etc...

- Don't be scared of using codes / tropes / archetypes

...As long as it benefits the narrative, of course. By codes / tropes / archetypes, I mean posing or expressions or visual effects that are universally understood and used for specific expressions. The semicircle sweatdrops and blush made with slashes are incredibly typical of manga/anime, but it doesn't mean they're bad! Visual effects are there to help remove the ambiguity of an expression considering a single expression without visual codes could convey multiple emotions!

- Find what inspires you and take notes!!!

In my case, what greatly shaped my art style to what it currently is: One Piece, the Ace Attorney series and Mob Psycho 100 (yes, I only watched the latter last year but it still managed to become a source of improvement/inspiration for my art even at my current level, because you'll never stop improving :) )

ok so the next comic is taking way longer time than i expected, and normally i wouldn't care cause i don't really care about tumblr algorythim and all of those things, but i just checked my follower count yesterday and HOLY MOTHER THERES ALREADY 72 OF YOU HERE?? in any case, enjoy!

ok the context of this is basically that in my AU even though the crown takes away the need to eat and sleep, the wearer's body will still need the nutrients or energies needed to stay healthy. The wearer will not die if they do not get either of these things, but they will appear weaker and more vulnerable as the time goes on.

i also hc that Leónidas never once eated grass since that moment.

he really loves meat.

Because of the constant persecution of the bishops, Leonidas' old flock focused more on self-defense and basic survival rather than education. which caused several members of the flock to never learn things like reading, writing, among other things. Some learned the basics, while others couldn't get to learn anything . unfortunately Leonidas being one of them.

Eventually, thanks to the guidance of Ratauu Leonidas, he was able to learn, he still struggles sometimes, but at least he knows the basics.

also the two lambs from below are Leeb and Shamb. they were Leónidas best friends before well, they died. i'm still figuring them aout so they might change in the future.

hi sorry if im being a bother but like. how do you be creative? or just have creative ideas in general? your art is always so unique and interesting and so different but I always feel like im never creative or have no ideas. idk if it has to do with me just not being able to focus easily but if you have any rescources or tips or anything really that helps with being creative, if it isnt too much of a bother, could u share them? ty sm

so this has been sitting in my inbox for months, i’ve been wanting to answer this when i had time!

here’s some stuff that helps me:

- an inspiration board by your workspace of other’s work and things you find out and about that interest you and doodles of your own

- writing down simple poetry or prose that you can later attach ideas to

- planning out concepts and compositions more akin to how one would assemble a collage ie. layering very visually different subjects and text

- exploring other mediums! sometimes ideas come better in 3d than 2d for me, this also applies to the work of others you view, i adore some good textiles or photography or films, and leading off that, follow lots of artists!

- let your interests motivate you! wildlife and paleobiology and queer love and my fav video games always make me want to create

- lastly be kind to yourself!

social media especially dictates creatives should always be pumping out perfect, innovative work but sometimes you just need a quiet week. sometimes you gotta make “meh” work and not post it or have a messy, illegible sketchbook. thats how art truly goes.

i can struggle with focus too, i can catch myself pacing for an hour straight or sitting down for two hours and getting 20 minutes of work done and other adhd brain shenanigans but i try my best to be kind to myself and try to create an environment to accommodate that.

treat yourself with respect too, art is a process and journey and we deserve to enjoy that act of creation and vulnerability and expression 💛

he's one to be gently touching you at all times without his knowing, subconsciously. when he sees that something upsets you, or when you get excited, nervous, tired - quite frankly, any emotion you show towards chan makes him want to reach out to you and hold your hand, caress your thigh, squeeze your shoulder and nape. he'd leave you little texts and messages throughout the day, too! since you know how busy he can get, even a simple 'i love you, hope you have a good day!' or 'omg i miss you sm, can't wait to get home :(' will show you that he always very much cares, no matter how deep he gets caught up in his job. simply loves to make you feel loved <3

cooks for you!! and a lot too, for that matter. he particularly loves spending the time together in the kitchen while he's preparing your favourite dish, from time to time running over to you all cutely with a spoon for you to try if the amount of salt and spices is enough or too much, and the excitement he has whenever you say he did a good job is just SO endearing for you to watch. THIS MAN will also treat you like his 4th cat, will boop your nose and squish your cheeks and pat your head and laugh at you when you only shoot a confused look his direction at his antics, because yes, you can bet that he will come up to you randomly while you're studying, cleaning, reading and just *squish* your face without a warning and running off all giggly like some teenager with a highschool crush.

ᴄʜᴀɴɢʙɪɴ

feeds you!!! like he's not a good cook but sometimes he WILL wake up earlier than you and try to somehow make a somewhat decent breakfast (will end up only toasting bread or ordering in something entirely, but the thought is there 💪🏼), and before you've even fully awoke he's sitting by the edge of the bed, a piece of fruit or bread in his fingers, ready to LITERALLY feed you like a baby, this HUGE grin on his face because he finds you adorable munching on whatever he prepared all tiredly? also for some reason loves your complaining right before he shoves the food into your mouth, about how you only just woke up, how he didn't have to cook, how you could have helped him with it and how you don't need to be feeded and can perfectly eat yourself, it all very much meets deaf ears though <3. in general, he'll love to just put up his chopsticks to your face when you're having lunch or dinner together and letting you try his food. other than that, he'd be one to share basically everything with you, up to his work, in a way. when he's home late and STILL has stuff to do after coming back, his favourite thing is explaining you what exactly he's making, how he's coming up with lyrics, melodies, how he's recording stuff. loves to see your interest in him and it works reversed as well, he will want to know EVERYTHING about your profession.

ʜʏᴜɴᴊɪɴ

it is such a random thing but he will help you remove your jewelery. if you were out with friends, or on a date with him, basically anywhere where you put thought and effort into your outfit, necklaces and earrings and bracelets accentuating your body - hyunjin will be next to you in the evening, fiddling with the opening of the chains around your neck, or taking one off your earrings off while you work on the other one. he wouldn't know a reason if you asked him why he had that habit, but you couldn't complain if you were honest, your heart melting at how attentive his actions felt. boy will also doodle you constantly!! you'd be sleeping or napping in his bed and he'd take a pic - for teasing purposes - before his pencil and notebook are out and he's creating a sketch of the way you're laying in his sheets - this time simply out of adoration, because anything you do seems to be so endearing to him that he wants to hold onto it in more ways than just a simple picture.

WILLLLL PAINT YOUR NAILS!!! no matter if you normally wear or like nail polish he WILL ask you to please please paint them. especially when he sees you painting your nails already anyways; would come up to you and pout until you give into him and hand him over the brush. you'd be surprised at how he always does a fairly decent job too, the paint smudged only rarely. he's always giving you a kiss afterwards AND WILL NOT STOP BRAGGING about what good of a nail artist he is, though it doesn't need much talent to simply put on one coat of color, he will not stop admiring his work lmao. also loves lazying around together! for him spending quality time together isn't necessarily actively doing something together, it's enough for him to simply lay in bed together all day and cuddle or doze off or talk about everything and nothing.

similar to jisung, he loves helping you to put on make up! he doesn't even need to convince you much because he's miraculously good at it anyways, and by how much fun he has painting your face with the brushes, it pains you to ever say no to him. when you don't have anything to get ready for he'll love experimenting lots with like- eyeliner looks and stuff you normally wouldn't wear, simply for the giggles of it, and would let you paint him up as well! loves the feeling of the brush against his skin and the time you spend together giggling and laughing. is a natural cuddle bug too, will come up to you randomly whenever you do basically anything and just snuggle against you, leaving butterfly kisses all across your skin until you're too distracted to continue your activety from before, your whole attention on your boyfriend now <3.

sᴇᴜɴɢᴍɪɴ

HUGE flirt. like he'd always be teasingly and jokingly flirtatious towards you, winking and wiggling eyebrows and saying stuff he KNOWS will make your heart flutter juuust the right amount and he's so good at it for it to only be a joke? but you know he does it simply to tease because he will go out of his way with the flirting when friends are around, only to make you that much more flustered, because he can and is evil. he always has a laugh at how you roll your eyes at him while simultaneously blushing like crazy, making everyone in the room laugh as well. bro also just serenades you all of a sudden? like he'll be practicing some heartbreakingly romantic song for some cover, and the moment he's home he's NOT stopping to sing it for you, specifically. again, it's more a joke than anything, especially the way he dramatically gestures and closes his eyes while singing, but since he's not one to say 'i love you' too often, you make out his antics to be somewhat deeper and more meaningful than they seemed.

bro loves to go shopping with you!!! he's obviously big on fashion and one thing he LOVES doing with you is being on the look out for cute couple outfits to wear together hehe. even if you're not super into fashion yourself! i feel like he'd find it adorable to somewhat look for stuff for you and spend hours in the dressing room, judging each others clothes, how they fit you, how they suit you, best quality time for him. oh also! wipes food from your face when you're eating, but in a jokingly annoyed manner. like when you're eating together and he sees a bit of food on your chin he takes some tissue and is tsking at you, funnily scolding you in that voice he has when he's pretending to be a grandma lmao, he knows it makes you laugh and he likes to show his affection towards you subtly that way.

And yeah the halloween post is the only one from 2021 I'm still proud of that was one of those random good art moments where you end up thinking 'shit there's no way the next drawing is going to be as good as this one' LMAO. -the kid who reads announcements and is on the school news -probably goes around interviewing students with stupid questions for a tiktok bit -"Debate club meeting this afternoon, I'll be busy on a date with my s/o!" and everyone in class looks at u -ofc he'll ask if you're comfy with his corny, very public jokes, and if you are he is so !!! :D -posts rants on his private story about how cute you are -uses his announcement kid privilege to just stop by your class to "collect information" but he spends like ten minutes talking to you while the teacher is just glaring at him -the radio teacher always has to email an apology but he's too good </3 he wakes up the whole school -please do not ask him for help w homework, he's a great cheerleader but oh goodness gracious

-if anything you're gonna be tutoring him -but he appreciates it so much!! -his friends are v tired of hearing about you, but Han makes sure you feel comfortable with them so you all actually have a ton of fun hanging out -when he's working cameras at a school event he always waves frantically at you or yells your name really loudly teehee -he's always excited to express his love for you, for everyone to see, because you're just!! so!! perf to him!!

-brings you baked goods almost every day, excels in school, sweet to everyone, super smiley, everyone loves him he's just so cute! -but w you,,,he gets to be himself, he gets to make slightly rude jokes, he gets to express how much he dislikes someone, he gets to voice his complaints, and having someone like you listen is more than he could ask for -everyone thinks you're the sweetest couple ever, he always has to be holding your hand !! loves it when you hold his arm because he feels like he's strong and protecting you (from what?? no clue, maybe calculus) -being so candid with you is relieving, as he always feels there's a lot of pressure on him to act and perform a certain way. he's just the sunshiney good kid -obviously you're not a bad influence on him (I think), but you allow him to express himself more freely without fear, you give him confidence

-not the mom friend, but the uncle friend -always saying weird jokes, asking interesting questions that makes you think, his mind is really abstract but he's also so funny lmao -you two can't sit together in class because when he laughs, you laugh, and then the teacher yells. sigh -teases you so much, texts you during class so your phone goes off, leaving overly cheesy notes in your locker that makes you question his dignity, all his photos of you two are kinda blurry because he's probably giggling while taking it so his body is shakey :( -pays for ur lunch or packs extra snacks for you -begrudgingly gives you his hw or notes you can copy off of -"can i have some of your water" and then he proceeds to CHUG it -his humor is great, but what attracts you is such a fascinating mind. he asks such interesting questions that make you giggle and then go hmmm -"if this world is a simulation, why is it so stagnant? do our controllers speed time up for them, but we don't experience it? like the sims??" -you guys have matching keychains which is so cute and everyone sees them in the hallway and cry because they're lonely -he always makes you smile, he's someone you just connect with and you can laugh with, and he feels the exact same way about you <3 jeongin

-baby face but kinda mean tbh TT -grouchy towards everyone but you kinda trope -sneaks through your window to surprise you with convenience store snacks and his unfinished homework he needs your help on -would smack a bitch if someone said anything bad about you -always looks out for you, he feeds you at lunch, carries an extra pencil just in case, he even tries in class so you don't worry about him falling behind -the best part is that he does his best to take care of himself so he can take care of you, it makes him feel like he's in charge!! -trash sleep schedule but at least you get to wake up to 100+ messages in the morning that span from paragraphs of proclamations of love to a roblox roleplay story video -he doesn't love PDA too much esp in the hallways but he kisses the top of your head when he leaves for class -talks and gushes about you to his friend and his favorite teachers but like makes them pinky promise they don't expose how whipped he is for you -he wants to be cool and mysterious to impress you, but you always reassure him you love him just how he is -that's why he loves you, you make him love himself
