Happy Superman Day! 85 years ago today, the world was introduced to Superman, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane.
The first things Superman did:
1) saved a woman wrongly convicted from execution;
2) saved a woman from a beating by an abusive man;
3) saved a woman (Lois) from kidnapping by a gang of men with unsavory plans;
4) began a campaign against war-profiteering munitions manufacturers.
Superman: hero of the people and warrior for social justice from the very beginning.

I'm reading every Superman comic post-Flashpoint, wheeeeeeee
Issue
Action Comics #1 (New 52)
Arc
Superman and the Men of Steel
Writer and Artist
Grant Morrison and Rags Morales
Plot summary
Superman breaks into a meeting of the Metropolis elite, threatening businessman Mr. Glenmorgan to obtain a confession. Lex Luthor is working with the US military as a consultant trying to aid in Superman's capture. Clark is behind on his rent but pays his landlady, who tells him about two men and a woman who were looking for him. Clark, suspecting danger, calls Jimmy Olsen and warns him not to get on a subway train, but Lois Lane and Jimmy are chasing after evidence for a story. Superman manages to halt the compromised train, which it's revealed Lex Luthor had damaged intentionally so that Superman would get hit with the train in order to rescue its occupants.
The Good
T-shirt Superman! Fun to see an obviously young and learning the ropes Supes. He wears jeans! He faces off with the cops! He stands up for exploited labor! Love that he's not invulnerable.
The art is really fun--there's a heaviness to the characters that feels real despite all the stylization, and expressions come across beautifully.
Enjoyed Luthor's spiel about invasive species--nice shorthand for him being both highly educated and not at all principled.
The Bad
Hate that Clark looks so much like Harry Potter in reporter guise
Interesting lore
Clark doesn't start off as the able-to-be-hurled-into-lunar-craters guy I expected. It seems like the military has been tracking him as he's gained power, and he's knocked over pretty hard by fire from a tank.
Luthor is an energy drink guy. He also calls Superman "it".
Predictions
Pretty sure Mrs. Nyxly is going to have some connection to Mr. Mxyzptlk (who I've only properly seen in Superman Red and Blue, but the guy is memorable), unless naming side characters at DC is done by keysmash.
Clark works at a different newspaper from Jimmy and Lois, although he and Jimmy are best friends--I imagine they will all be employed at the Planet at some point during the run.

Action Comics 1's Auctions Background
Action Comics 1 is the principal issue of the first run of the comic book/magazine series Activity Comics. The 1938 comic, which denotes the primary appearance of Superman, is currently the third-most-costly comic ever. On June seventeenth, 2021, Legacy Sell-offs will offer a duplicate of Activity Comics #1 as a feature of its Comics and Comic Craftsmanship occasion. It will cross the block only two months after another duplicate broke the record for the most costly comic at closeout. Notwithstanding the beforehand referenced 200,000 duplicates brought to showcase, finding a gatherer grade illustration of action comics 1 value in 2021 is troublesome. "Kids read them, so the books got worn out.
Following an all around record-breaking year for the comic book, Legacy Sell-offs will offer one more duplicate of Activity Comics #1 this month (part #91001). As of composing, intermediary offering for the part is at $320,000 of action comics and Pricing
CGC grades this duplicate of Action at a 5.5, which the organization characterizes as "a somewhat better than expected collectible with a few moderate imperfections." Bidders ought to likewise take note of that some protection work has been finished on the comic. That incorporates new staples and a support of the cover. The comic book sold for $3.2 million after a 24-day bidding war. That price set an auction record for all comics books available at the time, not only for Action Comics #1.

This is the iconic first Superman cover, and I always thought he was bravely rescuing the car or something. No, he's smashing it to bits after ruthlessly shaking out all the people inside. Cause they kidnapped Lois.
I love him.

Somebody tell me if this is a bad take, or if my love for Bruce is causing my objective brain to glitch, but-- something about advertising Batman, a hero who's very popular for being good with children, for being NURTURING with children, a bad father kinda defeats the whole purpose of what he's supposed to represent.
Batman is a protector; He protects people the world (and especially law enforcement) does not care about. That's literally the point of him.
Something about marketing " you can be incredibly violent to people you care about! And Its fine, because you care about them even if you abuse them, and that's what matters!" towards people, but especially men and young boys, is REALLY fucked up to me.
