What are your thoughts on shadowpeach?
Fandom wise? I do not care for it.
Canon wise? I believe in men committing crimes while forming the most toxic, unhealthy attachments to one person could lead to such a dysfunctional relationship that it, eventually, turns into a functional one. And also they’re trans and aspec.
Disclaimer: this is all my opinion and people can do whatever they want, i simply have my gripes with some of the fandom stuff. this is just me explaining what i like and dislike about shadowpeach.
I think the most common thing people fall into when it comes to ships—or shipping in general—is how to domesticate these two characters without fully addressing their flaws, personalities, behavior, and their overall choices throughout the original media/show they come from.
Macaque and SWK both suffer equally through this mischaracterization: Macaque is often painted as this shy or “edgy” character with little to no ties to his actual character in canon and, more often than not, he is perceived as this “dad” type of character when, in fact, he should not be allowed near children for I fear he will bully them nonstop until they sit there in the corner feeling disheartened and miserable about themselves; Sun Wukong is often portrayed as this dumb himbo with little-to-no means of understanding social cues, not understanding emotions in a way that’s very frustrating, and be this yearning, pining idiot who’s still longing for his childhood crush when he did not hesitate to punch this guy in the face multiple times throughout the show. So when they are paired up together it’s this weird mash of people believing Macaque is the better dad with more understanding of human behavior and Wukong is his dumb, doting husband who’s doing his best and cannot stand up for himself when confronted about things.
The amount of times people choose to make Macaque sympathetic by having Sun Wukong’s family side with Macaque when it comes to Wukong’s actions/choices is so vast I could not count them all on one hand. The common trope of having Princess Iron Fan (Sun Wukong’s sister-in-law) become Macaque’s sworn sister is so disheartening to see for someone who read through Journey To The West and thought of how silly the overall family dynamic of the Demon Bull Family and Sun Wukong’s troops was. Removing Iron Fan as Sun Wukong’s literal sister just to have someone backup Macaque and sympathize with him is funny and a bit silly.
That being said… the canon version of Shadowpeach and its possibilities are, in fact, very delicious.
Tumblr media
Canon wise this is what we know about Sun Wukong and Macaque’s history together:
Sun Wukong and Macaque meet
The brotherhood is formed after Azure meets Sun Wukong, Macaque tags along with Wukong (note: Macaque is not addressed as “brother” by the characters, only Wukong is)
Macaque tries to warn Wukong about how dealing with Heaven might be a bad idea
They share a peach under a tree; Wukong reassures Macaque this plan will work
Wukong carries on with Azure’s plan anyway (yes, azure lion’s plan, not wukong’s)
The brotherhood is defeated and Wukong gets trapped under a mountain
Presumably no one comes to visit Wukong, only Macaque
During his final visit, Wukong is angry that Macaque is free and can’t see the fact that Wukong was trying to do everything for them and his kingdom
Macaque snaps back at Wukong and calls him an obsessive demon before leaving
They have another fallout and fight
Wukong ends up killing Macaque in the aftermath
500~ years later, Macaque and Wukong fight again with Wukong being more apathetic towards their reunion than Macaque is
Macaque obsesses over Wukong continuously (coughs)
Macaque is biased in his retellings of his and Wukong’s relationship (see: all of shadowplay and the scrolls memories)
They fight (again) throughout S3
They somewhat reconcile by the end of S4
We will address the fact Sun Wukong was groomed into going to war by this former celestial warrior instead of having it be because of his own want to protect his family and friends after Heaven refused to pay him the respect he wanted when he first joined their ranks later. Right now we focus on the fact that Sun Wukong is canonically a person people easily fall in love with (platonically) and have a tendency to want to stay close to regardless of what his future actions will be like and Macaque is sequentially obsessed with him throughout the show.
Tumblr media
“The hero and the warrior were like the Sun and the Moon. Their light, a protective glow, shining upon the world. Together, there was nothing that could stop the two of them. Either in the Celestial Realms or on Earth. As time went on, the hero attained power beyond comprehension. As the hero's light grew, so too did his shadow. And soon, the warrior was cast in that shadow. In the darkness, the warrior was forgotten by the hero.”
Fun fact: Macaque is never going to be on par with Sun Wukong’s power and he works best as support than he does a duo-attacker along side Wukong. Wukong is on his own power level and Macaque, while being able of holding his own against enemies, could be stomped to death by Xiaoijiao is he crossed the line.
Macaque’s obsession with Sun Wukong comes from the inability to move on from the past; Macaque wanting things to go back as they were is a subtle theme going through the show — he keeps latching on to biased memories and avoiding the actual problems that caused their relationship to fall apart and it isn’t until Season 3’s big confrontation with Long Xiaojiao’s Samadhi Fire ritual. He realizes he abandoned Wukong during a time of need and proceeds to flee, abandoning him again.
Macaque has issues. More often than not people call out on Sun Wukong for abandoning Xiaotian or the Monkie Kid Crew all while ignoring the fact Sun Wukong does not purposefully leave Qi Xiaotian, he tries his hardest to make it back in time and is visibly scared/horrified when LBD attacks in his absence. Sun Wukong tries his hardest to comfort Xiaotian while Macaque tries to torment him.
Regardless, Sun Wukong and Macaque’s relationship is unique to most media’s portrayal of friends turned enemies. Because Wukong does not see Macaque as a threat up until he teams up with Lady Bone Demon — he is only scary by association, not by anything he has done up until that point. You can tell with the way Wukong mocks him and calls him something akin to a puppet during their interaction in Season 3 when Macaque trapped him and Nezha in the ice.
And even then Macaque doesn’t even bother trying to engage with Wukong in a friendly manner because kindness is for losers HA i’m not apologizing for anything, bye Sun Wukong, you big old LOSER [proceeds to possibly live on the streets and stay homeless until wukong allows him to return to ffm under certain house rules]
You’ll notice that Sun Wukong barely has any opinions on Macaque.
This is because Macaque is favored by the narrative more than Sun Wukong is so we have very little context as to how Sun Wukong genuinely feels towards Macaque.
Sun Wukong sees Macaque as an annoyance, a bother, a threat, a coward, an imposter and then, finally, an ally.
But all we get from that is Wukong handing Macaque a peach-flavored ice cream pop as a parallel to him sharing a peach with his old friend back when they were young monkeys before he was trapped under a mountain for 500 years as a result of his abuser’s power hold on him that forced him to fight heaven as a way to “make the world a better place”.
We love to see it.
Macaque and Wukong’s relationship goes from mutual interest and a supportive friendship established years prior to the original building of the brotherhood to a very weird, uncategorized type of dynamic. The only way to characterize Sun Wukong’s “affection” towards Macaque is, possibly, the same way most people would characterize Macaque to be towards Wukong. Y’know the slightly judgmental actions and eye rolls and scoffs of affection most people write about Macaque when Wukong does something stupid? Yeah.
“But Macaque said “this guy” when Wukong was presenting his plan to defeat Azure—“ yeah have you considered Wukong does a lot of masking in the presence of the entire Monkie Kid Crew and Macaque has a tendency to present himself as this cool persona when in fact he’s just a homeless monkey who’s been crashing on his ex’s couch for the past weeks since the ending of Season 3?
“OK…. but why QPR Shadowpeach?”
Sun Wukong throughout the course of Journey to the West and all its past and future iterations have always had him be uninterested in both men and women. There are multiple instances where he’s capable of courting women and he instead backs away or does not pay it any mind; aside from this he’s heavily implied to only care about familial love and friendships. He does not see his pilgrim brothers as anything more than family and he views Tripitaka as a mentor rather than someone whom he was chained to. And Azure was his idol and he was groomed by him, and everyone else was viewed to him as a troop — or, y’know, a family.
This and the fact that— both Sun Wukong and Macaque are over a thousand years old. Why on earth would they have a normal type of relationship? Giving them a checklist of what passes on as romantic and platonic when to them the line is so blurred it’s barely existent to them is amusing.
Sun Wukong and Macaque having their own weird relationship where it changes from frustrated best friends to partners to angry middle aged demons to the tired traumatized immortals who sometimes cuddle while still beating each other up is so deliciously interesting and unhealthy to the point where it is healthy.
Also Celestial bodies are not the same as mortal bodies; canonically Sun Wukong has transformed into women before and people have addressed him with female-leaning pronouns before. my personal headcanon of sun wukong being genderfluid lves on and now we can have sapphic shadowpeach with transfem macaque.
also im still feverish so if this doesnt make sense then too bad damn im sorry

Now a Part Two of more info on "The Monkey King and the Infant" au:
link to part one
There's A LOT of crying and emotions between characters in this fic. Like full on "imma destroy this wall real quick" tantrums from Sun Wukong *and* Macaque. They're both deeply hurt and very bad at communicating.
Macaque's death in JTTW is canon. He had not set upon Tripitaka on his own accord - he had been ordered. He doesnt remember who gave the order though - must have drank some soup in Diyu.
Macaque believes that Lady Bone Demon only resurrected him to let her out. But she also secretly needs MK for something. Macaque prays that they never cross paths. Spoilers: they do.
Before Tang and Pigsy realised who the two monkeys actually were; they managed to get them jobs in their own workplaces. Macaque assists Tang at the University library where he works as an archivist. Sun Wukong on the other hand is the pretty host/delivery boy that charms tips out of all of Pigsy's customers. Even after the reveal, the two monkeys enjoy their day jobs.
Pigsy doesnt trust Sun Wukong to run the kitchen on his own. He does trust Macaque though, which makes Sun Wukong furious.
The co-parents learned that MK has built-in Gold Vision cus he has no filter;
MK (age 4): "What happened to your eye?" Macaque: *checks if his glamour is on* Tang: "Huh? What about his eyes? They look normal to me... oh he probably just means that little scar you have." Macaque, relieved: "Oh... this. I got in my last battle." MK: "No no! I mean your WHITE eye. The one you don't squint out of. Same side as the white streak in your hair." Macaque: "...what?" Tang, slowly realising whats going on and trying to hold back a lore infodump: "Ah! :D"
Sun Wukong will start sobbing at the drop of a hat if asked how his and Macaque's last fight went. MK learned that the hard way and it caused a crying chain reaction.
It takes Shadowpeach literal years of living and raising a child together before they realise that they've fallen back in love. Meanwhile Freenoodles got express delivery within weeks of MK being in their lives.
One of the first shapeshifting forms MK was able to take on is a brown piglet. Yes, Pigsy cried the first couple of times it happened.
Sun Wukong and Macaque shared the restaurant apartment for most of MK's childhood. Pigsy used to live there too, but moved in with Tang nearby after he took in the the soon-to-be monkey parents. He claims it was to "save up on space", but it quickly turned into something else along with his relationship to Tang. In the modern day, MK still lives in the apartment above the restaurant like in canon. Sun Wukong mostly lives at Flower Fruit Mountain when he's not staying in the city - otherwise he forcibly crashes at Macaque's loft in the University district.
MK is trans masc (he/they) in this au, as is Macaque and maybe Tang. Self projection ahoy.
Demon attacks and Human threats have followed the family throughout MK's childhood, but its nothing a superpowered team of dads cant handle. Except the first time MK scraped his knee at kindergarden and Sun Wukong was convinced that he was gonna bleed out. Or when MK got his first bad cold and Macaque ruined the kitchen trying to alchemise a cure. Or MK's first run in with a bully that made Pigsy so mad that he reconnected with Sandy to pull a "scary bodyguard" act on the bully. Or MK's first school play where he played the role as a cloud, and Tang clapped a little too loudly. Or his first- (the list goes on. these dorks are so proud of their little stone egg baby).
Please add your thoughts in the tags or send asks cus my butt's gonna write a fic soon

• The Ten Kings basically go to him and are like “we got bullied :(“ and Ksitigarbha goes “dw, I’ll take you to Heaven and talk to the Jade Emperor with you UwU” (excuse me Jade Emperor, they asked for no pickles)
•I’m imagining the monkeys trying to shake awake Wukongs dead body until his soul snaps back into it😭SOBBIN
•”Listen, hes basically human, It’s way smarter to give him a job than try to fight him” “ah yeah that makes sense”
•Wukong so polite fr

Ruby, Jaune and Sun, I felt like those three are more like main characters. Aside from being leaders to their own teams, I think there's more to them than just goals to become huntsmen. For Ruby, struggling to become the leader while growing up, with Jaune learning from his mistakes to improving to follow the legacy of his ancestors, and Sun trying to make amends to his teammates in the books. What do you think?
Ruby and Jaune are spot on, but seeing as the books are god awful and I don't consider them canon at all cause they did Team SSSN so fucking filthy it's not even funny.
However I do agree that Sun's journey as a Huntsman should have indeed been about him maturing and taking things more seriously. I don't agree that he's a bad Sun Wukong allusion, just that RT handled him poorly (like everything in their damn show). Sun isn't a terrible leader, but he was definitely getting there to be his best and we never saw his progress because it was relegated to books that focused way too much on CFVY and also assassinated CFVY as characters.
Coco was honestly fine before the books, and I feel that as a second year IIRC, she could have given Ruby, Jaune, Sun, and dare I say Cardin some pointers on how and what to strive for as Team Leaders, and she subsequently learns from them too.
Cardin I feel is a complicated case since in canon he's really just the simple bully archetype, yet we here that he stayed and helped protect Beacon when shit got rough, and I say that could've been the perfect time to turn him into a Eddie Brock/Flash Thompson type person and realize he needs to shape up and atone for his previous behavior. Cardin's not a bad person, he's just a jerk that needed to wisen up but we unfortunately never got to see that.

If it's not spoilery I had a question about Mac and swk
So going by an old comic you did, we know Mac got a little bullied because of his ears. We also know from clues in the story that Mac was much more reserved and shy in the past.
So it's probably safe to assume swk was protective of Mac to some extent.
Was he protective of him during the early years of the brotherhood?
And did swk ever get a little jealous when Mac started getting along well with azure?
(pretty sure we all know Mac had some envy regarding how well swk got on with the others. But I was curious if it was the other way around.)
hmmmmmmmmmmm.
yes. yes he was. Tangled Macaque on flower fruit mountain wasnt the same macaque we know now.
specifically before wukong became the monkey king. more-so. beforre wukong left to study. Wukong was often the one to protect macaque as he was much more soft-spoken and wouldnt really stand up for himself. so wukong was often the one to do it.
so yes. wukong was very protective of macaque, when he left the first time though Macaque started to become more independent because he had to be. he didnt have anyone to hide behind anymore.
when the brotherhood was formed hes the 'mighty warrior' from the stories we hear about in the show.
i wouldnt say wukong ever got jealous tho. cause, i havent really mentioned this in the fic yet but it is kinda hinted. macaque wasnt ever close. to the brotherhood.
notice how technically mac knew dbk before ghonzhu. yet he is closer with her.
they were always wukongs friends first. they were nice to macaque (other then peng) but they were always wukongs friends and brothers before they were ever his.
notice how in canon macaque is always the one that seems. out. no one ever really adresses him other then peng but thats only to insult him.
in tangled star tho ill go more into that through the characters perspectives. azure was a little different but thats all ill say.
in tangled star, the brotherhood adressed macaque but. they werent that close. so there wasnt really anything for wukong to be protective or jelous of.
it was more of Macaque standing to the side while wukong got all thier attention and he was stuck watching. being there but not really being there.
wukong actually. was moreso the one trying to encourage them to interact with macaque while he shrunk away. so if mac and azure were getting along swk would be more "yay my friends are gettig along"

About the PIF and DBK, Chang'e and her love, I didn't even doubt it 🥹
Nezha isn't dating anyone in canon. But had a confrontation with this dragon in his own story. And the cartoon of the same name tells us about a very beautiful friendship between them.
Thank you for answers! But it comes out that Macaque and Wukong are not friends, but enemies here?
Thank you for confirming my doubts!
If I'm not mistaken nezha accidentally killed or hurt the dragon he was friend with, but I'm not too sure because i heard it once or twice with no proof behind them.
But! I will be looking into this friendship between him and the dragon so i can make something out of it! Thank you!
About Macaque and Wukong though,
In the swap AU they are more towards jttw rather than LMK.
I always liked the theory of macaque being wukong little evil twin because he was the manifestation of wukong worst traits and thought, but since i didn't wanna do it because i wanted to give my macaque enjoyers buddies their macboob, i changed it into something else.
he's still leaning towards jttw, he's just not that theory i just said!
Macaque and Wukong aren't nor were friends before, wukong actually didn't know macaque.
I explained it in another ask which I'll get real quick once I'm done answering this one, so i can edit this ask and put the link, but yeah!
I can explain it real quick anyway.
Macaque is actually just a normal human like wukong who is driven by jealousy and hate, trying to kill wukong just to get hid identity and fame.
Like in the book where the six eared macaque chapter comes in and there's wukong fighting with himself.
In the book though, macaque eats and enslaves wukong subjects and other things, in this AU he tried to ruin wukong life by spreading rumors or bullying him severely ect.
It turned over the years of macaque trying to kill wukong, so they kinda became enemies.
Yes! Macaque still tried to steal wukong identity, but failed, so he just went with plan B (aka: kill the monkey dude and take his place.)
'till this day wukong has to fight macaque.
And while his brothers do know about macaque, they don't know the full story.
For them it's wukong and macaque acting like stray cats, they don't know that macaque is actively trying to kill wukong and is the reason why wukong is basically a daily customer to the hospital.
But then if you switch to chang'e and Nezha, they know a different story.
For them it's one of the foes wukong has to fight daily, and they think of macaque as just a snobby copycat.
None of them know why macaque is like that, and neither does wukong.
But wukong is actively annoying macaque by calling him old or names such as macboob or macaroni, and macaque just gets pissed and starts a fist fight, so no wonder wukong brothers don't think it's too much of a deal !
About the hospital part..
No, neither Tripitaka nor wukong brothers know about wukong going to the hospital because of macaque machines and cruelty.
sure, once or twice it happened because the hospital didn't listen to wukong "call chang'e instead" and called Tripitaka,
But once he figured that out, they never knew about the hospital.
He's only doing it so they don't get stressed about the macaque situation y'know?

On anon bc. Whatever anyways there’s this new ship in lmk between the characters Peng and Macaque and. It’s literally a bully x victim trope thing but with grown men who have 1 minute of screen time together. And is currently being backed up between Peng’s va bc she said they have tension and it makes Wukong (macaque’s bestie at the time) jealous and. That pisses me off so much bc 1) All Peng does is tell Macaque to kill himself when Macaque is just sitting there 2) Wukong is canonically disgusted by romance 3) Wukong is also known for having such an ego he literally would never get jealous. AND ITS SO BORING. it’s so fucking boring. And you dragged an aro character into the mix why would you do that ^_^!!! But their ship name is inkyfeathers which is kinda cool so. Whatever thanks 4 letting me rant ^_^
no idea what this is about but i believe you wholeheartedly mwah mwah

Why do you bully SWK and make him so evil? Is it because we are in Macaque's perspective?
SWK isn't evil in this AU, just how Macaque isn't going to be innocent and no wrong-doing (I'm keeping the fact that he ate that monkey canon to this storyline and tried to sabotage Wukong's journey by imporsating him and the crew). Although, since the story is more focused on Macaque, SWK will be put on a more biased light, especially throughout the beginning, since Macaque resents him for abandoning him and killing him during his journey.

So like in evil mk au, will LBD show up? bc I'm certain she'll most likely be the one to call out on MK being no better than Wukong. Thus starting a bit of a crisis for MK telling himself he's not in the wrong.
Bitch Mk doesn't give a fuck about her thoughts. He flat out bullies her into rethinking her own vision after he took out her number one supporter.
Bow boy is a much larger threat to her than the canon mk for one reason and one reason alone
HE TRICKED FUCKIN WUKONG INTO TRUSTING HIM.
A man who's trust is not easily earned and can't easily be manipulated when he had no one to loose at that point. My evil mk is such a strategist that he already knew how separate the fourth ring from mei without being told.
He convinced Red son to help them (a planned fake pleading) thus Red son got the full flame back
You don't fuck with Bow boy

Oh my gosh yeah, Peng was real mean to Macaque. I got the sense that they bullied him and Macaque was really only there for Wukong anyway.

Read the descriptions of the next episodes.
How Interesting.
What a bold move.
Funny enough, seems I end up somewhat following canon in my "Macaque bullies Wukong into being mentally and physically healthy since DBK was imprisoned" au. More than I was expecting tbh.

We still dont scream enough about Red Son's Redemption Arc.
Cause there is Red Son's Redemption Arc! but we are all silent about it, everybody treats it like such an obvious thing
But listen
It all starts from this moment:
Tumblr media
Yes, this exact moment!
During The whole frickin series, the one and only Red Son's dream and goal and motivation is to make his father proud or rescue him.
He fought Mk only to steal the Staff FOR HIS FATHER.
He bullied Mk, he stole the key from him, he took control of the weather station, he even raced to get the peach of immortality FOR HIS FATHER.
He helped Mk fight his father to SAVE DBK.
He opened this barbeque booth to spend some time WITH HIS FATHER.
He teamed up with Mk's crew to SAVE DBK.
And now look at the gif again
DBK is saved, his father freed him from the spider web, soooo Red Son could just go home with his dear dad without looking back, he could just leave this place and we would never see him again.
BUT HE DID NOT
Red Son looked aside at Mei and saw her trying to free herself. He helped her. He hesitated only for 2 seconds, guys!
And then he just turned around and join the team, omg
Tumblr media
And then, let's point it out again, he could leave this place with his father. Even if he saw DBK jumping to help Wukong and Mk, he could just find a safe place for himself from the explosion.
BUT HE DID NOT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Red Son not only stayed, guysguysguys, he protected our protagonist! He took the hit of the enormous explosion, he didn't even blink with hesitation, he just saw the danger and raised his arms to take it all
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I find it quite sad that only Mei noticed that. There is even focus on her face for a second, when she realized how many Red Son gave of himself right then
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He risked his life, it was a bit above his power's limits, just look at this picture:
Tumblr media
He's barely standing by himself. Mei had to help him to walk there. He got hurt or/and passed out, I repeat RED SON LITERALLY RISKED HIS LIFE FOR MK'S CREW
He's a true hero
Thank you for coming to my ted talk. I hope you believe in Red Son's Redemption Arc as a canon thing now

Hi there, I'm already sorry for the word vomit So I'm sort of new to the fandom, and I have seen a lot of things on ao3 that brought me to your page here. And I've had some amazing time reading a lot of the AUs, I really do love Shadowpeach (The two of them in canon have such a divorced vibe)
I was thinking about your AUs specifically Shadowmountin and Seeing Double AU. And just had this idea that the two AUs can honestly be the same one and that Macaque is with Wukong in modern day because they just didn't fight in the past and went together on the journey, but also the fact that Macaque can be such a convincing double to Wukong is because in few points Macaque and Wukong would just shapshift into each other sometimes, just to mess with people more. Like yeah Wukong can duplicate himself, but now it could be more fun to mess with the others on his journey, or have Macaque bully other deities, or even rumours start that Wukong even has Macaque's powers (And the stories absolutely start confusing the two as one that there isn't really a big mention of Macaque in the stories)
The Seeing Double AU was created way before Shadow Mountain AU and they have different premises.
In Shadow Mountain, Macaque ends up going on the entire journey along with Wukong. While in Seeing Double, the only thing that changes about JTTW is that Macaque and Wukong managed to talk things out instead of fighting, and afterward macaque went back to FFM.
They follow two different stories, plus Shadow Mountain's main focus is during JTTW while Seeing Double is just another version of LMK. It wouldn't make sense to mix them.
