Life, Loss, and Growing Up (ROTMNT)
Not your regular update, BUT This is from the Time Swap AU series I’ve been writing, but its more of a contextual piece. You don’t have to read it to follow the plot, but I wanted to do a little world and character building for the story on the future end! This helps me personally with giving Leo motive, and insight into the relationships he has around him. It’s also a Casey/Leo backstory of sorts. I hope you enjoy <3
as always, Time Swap AU created by @teetlezhere

“Leonardo, wake up. I’ve got to get going. I’m helping Raphael train the kids today.”
Leo groans and drags an old and beaten pillow over his face. “Mnnnh hrr fhh lhhd…” His head pounds in agitation with the abrupt disturbance to his hard-earned sleep. Having insomnia made sleeping sacred.
The mat on the ground depresses as a heavy weight settles onto the edge. Steady hands pull the pillow from the turtle’s weak and sleep-deprived grasp. “Leo, you’re an adult. What is this?” A tall rabbit leans above him, face stern and questioning.
Through drowsy eyes, Leonardo squints up to his husband. “You should smile more.” The slider grins snarkily, “Give those cheeks a little work-out, eh?”
“Just for that: I’m leaving.” Usagi shoves the pillow back into his face. “I’ll meet you out there in ten, okay? Busy day.” The rabbit stands only to be yoinked back down.
The turtle drawls, “I’m sorry, honey-bun.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“But it’s my birthday…” He giggles childishly and reaches up to tug at one of Usagi’s ears. “And you’re a widdle bunny…”
The swordsman adamantly fights the smile attempting to cross his face. “If you’re so excited about your birthday, then you should get up and experience it. You can’t stay in bed.” This time the rabbit successfully reaches his goal in standing.
The turtle mutant sighs and drops his comedic act, “Yeah, yeah… It’s not like I ever can, anyway…” He lays flat on his back and closes his eyes. His brow knots together and his hands entwine over his plastron.
There’s a pause. “Hey… Not everything is so bad, right? We have us. We have our family, our team…” Leonardo cracks his eyelids open to gaze up towards his husband. “We have a lot to be grateful for…”
Leo nods the smallest bit and inhales deeply before pushing himself up. “You’re right… I’ll get dressed…”
The rabbit smirks, “Well, I mean, you don’t have to-“
“Oh, ha-ha. Suddenly you’re full of jokes. Get out!” Leonardo laughs and chucks his pillow at his partner. The swordsman deflects the pillow onto the floor, chuckling. He winks before he quietly leaves the room. Leo smiles genuinely and begins pulling together his gear.

Once he’s finally made his way to the training hall, the slider observes Raphael and Usagi, sparring to demonstrate how to identify weakness in your opponent. Raph and Usi are about as opposite as can be when it comes to fighting styles, but they always find themselves at a stand still when it comes to one-on-ones; Of course they’d make the best example for how to understand your opponent. Leonardo sits on the ground a few feet back from the students and observes. Raphael’s blunt and powerful attacks are dodged effortlessly and countered with Usagi’s quick and precise movements. Raphael is able to block each attack and deflect easily with his tough exterior and unmovable stance. It’s like watching a big rock fight a fly. The blue-banded leader chuckles to himself.
One of the students turns, hearing Leonardo’s giggling. He gasps and scoots back towards the turtle mutant. “Sensei!”
Leonardo shushes the boy and whispers, “Casey… You’re supposed to be watching…”
“Yes, I know, just- It’s your birthday! Happy birthday!” Casey attempts to speak quietly. He grins happily to his master. His face then scrunches up in disgust, “Are you gonna eat one of those ‘cake’ things?” He lifts his fingers to mimic quotations; He couldn’t tell you what a cake actually was.
“Oh, I’m gonna eat one of those twinkies for every single year I managed to not die.” The slider leans back onto the heels of his palms and nods not-so-seriously, a shit-eating grin plastered to his face.
Casey gags a little, “Blech. They’re way too…” He snaps his fingers as he tries to think of the right word, “-they’re too… strong? In a way that makes my teeth feel gross.”
Leo gives a half smile, “Sweet.” He takes note that Casey, and probably any of the kids here, can’t describe flavors much at all. He supposes that makes sense given the circumstances, but that just makes it hurt more. “Yeah, they’ve always been too sweet…”
He doesn’t notice that his gaze has fallen or that Casey is now leaning in in concern, wondering what he said wrong. He hardly even notices when a boy runs in and screeches to a halt. That is, till he screams out to the room.
“Master Leonardo! Come quick! The delivery team’s back!”
“What?” The turtle is knocked back to his senses. He grunts as he stands, “But they’re supposed to be out for another three days.” He rushes over to the boy and follows him to the corridor.
“The carrier was intercepted and attacked. Rohan carried them back, but they’re hurt, and bad…” The boy pulls Leonardo into the med bay.
His eyes widen in horror. “I… I need you to get Michael.” The boy nods and dashes away. Leonardo steps over to a large salamander mutant. He seems to be the only one not in dire need of attention. “Rohan! Are you hurt? What happened? What’s going on?”
“Easy, Leonardo… I’m okay, but Pax…” The massive amphibian sets a hand on the cot beside him. There lies an axolotl yokai, suffering from blood loss and covered from head to tail with cuts and burns. The nurse attending to them is currently rewrapping a bandage around a missing arm. Leonardo bites the inside of his cheek and looks over to the next cot, where a younger recruit was also laying in critical condition. “Pax and Kate are barely hanging on by a thread…”
Leo supposed that’s better than dead. He does a mental headcount. “Three… Why are there only three of you?” He turns back to Rohan, fear littering his eyes. “Where’s Cassandra?”
Rohan gulps and gazes down to his lap. He says nothing.
Leonardo begs quietly, “Ro, please…” He steadily holds the salamander’s shoulder. “Where’s Cass?”
“She… stayed behind.” A small and shrill voice comes from the cot. The axolotl weakly turns to the slider mutant, “She gave him cover to carry us back. She said… She said she didn’t want the krang to follow us to the base… She ordered us to leave…” The pink amphibian yokai coughs into their remaining hand, only to pull back and see blood. The nurse gently moves their head back to a laying position, calmly asking to see into their eyes with a small, dim, light.
Rohan gently holds onto the end of their blanket. How is he always so calm?
Leo stands straight as Michaelangelo races into the room. Tears are already edging his eyes as he fumbles over to his partners’ sides. “W-what happened!? Why-“ He sees the blood in the axolotyl’s hand and glances up to see their missing arm. “Wh-“ He gently rests two fingers against their cheek as he bends down to see them more clearly, “What d-did they do to you?!…”
Rohan grips Mikey’s bicep firmly, “Hey… I know this is scary, but we need to give them space…”
Yellow sparks flicker off of the mystic warrior’s skin as his heart begins to sputter. “I’m… I could try healing them! I want to help!”
Leonardo grasps his opposing arm. “Mikey… Please sit… They're having internal bleeding. You’re not experienced enough with healing to mess with that.” He pulls his brother back to look him in the eye, “We’ll figure this out, okay? The medics will do all they can.” He tries his best to calm the box turtle. He watches as Michaelangelo’s chest begins to steady and the sparks die down.
“We’re all here, yeah?” Rohan pulls Mikey down into the seat beside him. “We just need to be patient…” His partner nods slowly, his lip quavering. He presses his face into the salamander’s shoulder and sobs quietly.
“I’ll be back soon, okay? I need to… figure out some things…” Leo sighs and turns, catching the gaze of his older brother and his husband in the entryway. He purses his lips and approaches them quietly.
The rabbit reaches for his shoulder and Raphael speaks softly, “Lee, I’m sorry… We could try doin’ some otha day? I know it’s been-“
“Cassandra is dead.”
The snapping turtle shuts his mouth stiffly and clenches his fist.
Usagi whispers after a moment, “But… Casey…” Worry floods his gaze as his hand slips down to Leonardo’s fingers.
“He’s my responsibility now…” Leo pulls his hand away and presses his index and thumb into his temple. He lets out a shuddering breath.
Usagi and Raphael look to each other, trying to share a thought. The larger turtle sets a heavy palm against the back of his brother’s neck. “Our responsibility… Okay?”
Leonardo hesitates before nodding.
“Do you want me to come with you to talk to him?,” his husband gently offers.
“I appreciate it, but… I should be the one to tell him…” Usagi hums in response.
The quiet is interrupted by Michaelangelo’s desperate voice, “Please! Please I can’t-!”
“Michael, we need to stay back!”
The trio in the doorway all turn to see Pax’s monitor flatlining as several nurses huddle around their frail form.
“They’re dying! I can’t- I can’t let them die!” Leonardo turns to see his brother, struggling against one partner’s hold in a frantic attempt to reach the other. “Ro, please!” He chokes through his sobs as light flickers through the corners of his eyes and his hands begin to glow in a bright yellow.
The salamander yokai wraps his arms around the small turtle from behind. “Michael, you need to calm down…” The mystically charged mutant continues to fight the hold as the medics go through several attempts of reviving the axolotl.
“Let go of me!!” Michelangelo’s body almost appears as though it’s been set ablaze. Rohan grunts uncomfortably as several sparks burn against his delicate skin.
Leonardo stumbles back to his brother, resting one hand against Rohan’s shoulder while enveloping Mikey’s head with his other arm, ignoring the stinging of the heat radiating from his body. He feels Raphael encompass them from the opposite side, his large hand pressing against the youngest’s chest.
“LET ME GO!!” Mikey begins to lift from the ground, mystic power coursing through him as tears sizzle off of his hot skin.
Leonardo is the first to kneel onto the ground, followed quickly by the other, larger, two mutants. They work together to press against the box turtle’s carapace as he wails from under them. He whispers in consolation, “It’s okay, little brother… It’s gonna be okay…”
“Let me go-o! P-please, I need to- I… please…” The glowing fades as Michaelangelo melts into a puddle under his partner and his brothers. The nurses around Pax have stilled as the doctor studies their watch slowly.
“August 14th, 9:23 AM…” The doctor lifts their gaze to lock eyes with Leonardo, “I’m… I’m sorry.”
The leader of the team hugs his baby brother’s head to his plastron. He plants a gentle kiss on his temple and whispers against him, “It’s okay… We’re gonna be okay, Mikey…”
Raphael wraps a steady arm around Rohan, watching helplessly as he crumbles to pieces.
The salamander tightens his grip on the smaller turtle and murmurs, “We’re... We’re still here…”
—
Leonardo approaches a young Casey, perched atop the roof of the base. The boy nearly falls when he hears footsteps approach him.
“Ah! Le- M- Sensei! Sensei, I- I’m sorry I know we’re not allowed out here, I’ll…” He fumbles as he reaches around for his belongings in an attempt to collect himself physically as well as mentally.
Leonardo chuckles and sits beside the teen. “It’s okay. We actually have an invisible cloaking around the base, but we just don’t tell anyone because we want to be cautious…” He leans over to Casey and glares daggers, “So don’t tell anyone.”
The student nods rapidly. “D-Donnie?” Leo nods. They sit quietly for a moment. The older man takes the time to study his student’s face. His eyes are puffy and his cheeks are flushed. He was crying…
“Can… Can I see my mom yet?”
The turtle chokes. His face crinkles up as he debates how the hell to tell the child that his mom didn’t even make it to the med bay. Damn it, Cass… He resolves to enveloping the confused boy into a warm hug.
The teen’s eyes well up and he timidly rests his hands around Leonardo’s back. “O-oh...”
“Casey… I want to talk to you about life… loss, and… and growing up…”
The child trembles and nods. “I… I know…” He whimpers and burrows his face into his teacher’s plastron. Leonardo holds him steady as his small form quakes with overwhelming grief. They stay for a moment as grey clouds gently blanket over the hot sun. Rain begins to sprinkle around them, and the sounds seems to steady Casey’s breathing: that, and the heavy hand rubbing circles on his back.
The blue-banded turtle finally speaks again, “When my brothers and I were little, my dad had a really difficult time dealing with the four of us. I mean, how can you just handle having four sons out of the blue? We got into all kinds of trouble… He wasn’t the most patient or aware, but he always came to us when we needed him… Being a parent is an insanely difficult job, a-and I personally think being a perfect parent is impossible.”
But damn, Cass made it look so easy…
“Anyways… I’ve always had a lot of trouble sleeping, so when I was younger, Splinter would sing me a little song to help me rest.” He chuckles, “And man, did he suck at singing. I started to fall asleep just so I wouldn’t have to listen to him!” He hears Casey quietly snort through his shuddering. He smiles, that’s something.
“But- regardless of his vocal prowess- every time I hear the song now, I sleep… My brothers learned it from him, and Raph even taught it to Usagi.” He laughs quietly before looking out to the rain clouds rolling in.
“I guess the point I’m trying to drive home is that… Energy never dies… The things that keep you sane, the ones who keep you safe… They stay for good: just in a new form.” He feels Casey’s fingers clinging desperately to his shell. “I’m… I’m not gonna let anything happen to you, Case, okay? My brothers, Usi, and I… We’re gonna take care of you… I promise...”
Leonardo listens to thunder quietly rumbling in the distance. He sings softly.
Don’t fear the night, It’s only so quiet, So the moon can have his time to shine
The sun needs a break, It’s hard being great, So let him rest just for a while
The stars will watch you, They’ll help to guide you, When you’re feeling lost or alone
And, son, I’ll be here, To hold you through fear, I’ll always bring you back home
I’ll bring you back home, I’ll bring you back home
Don’t fear the night, It’s only so dark, So we can appreciate the light
Give yourself a break, It’s hard being great, Just let yourself rest for a while
I’ll stay and watch you, Always protect you, When you’re feeling lost and alone
Oh, son, I'll be here, To hold you through fear, And I’ll always bring you back home
I’ll bring you back home, I’ll always bring you back home
I’ll always bring you back home
