Yola to Perform at American Music Awards 2022!
Tumblr media
Yola continues her meteoric rise with the confirmation of her performance at the ‘2022 American Music Awards,’ which  will air live from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu. Yola will be the SONG OF THE SOUL featured performer, which spotlights an emerging, mission-driven artist that has inspired change and invoked social justice through their lyrics. To celebrate the honor, she will share an electrifying rendition of her song, “Break The Bough.”      Written in 2013 following her mother’s funeral, it is a homage to her mother, sharing an imagination of her afterlife. Her poetic lyrics are a wish for her late mother to find a joy she couldn’t find on earth, and an anthem for anyone dealing with complicated grief. With a genre bending mix of R&B, soul and classic pop, the performance is set to be one of the most epic of the evening.
Commenting on this landmark moment Yola stated, “I have long dreamed of performing at the American Music Awards, and honored to be included during the “SONG OF THE SOUL” moment. ‘Break The Bough’ creates a loving false construct of what I hope my mother experienced in her afterlife. A mix of all the things she held dear and brought her happiness during her life. Specifically, her pre-windrush Barbados childhood, disco and Sci-fi.” Yola added, “I hope the song brings a little peace and joy to anyone who has lost someone close to them regardless of how challenging the relationship may have been.”
The song featured on her pivotal sophomore album, “Stand For Myself,” which was twice GRAMMY nominated, making her a six-time GRAMMY nominee. “Stand For Myself” drew widespread critical acclaim.
The Black British genre fluid superstar this year made her acting debut when she portrayed Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama “Elvis,” who is played by Austin Butler, alongside Tom Hanks, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Alton Mason. Her role received widespread praise with support from New York Magazine, Rolling Stone and Harper’s Bazaar.
Yola has since continued her meteoric rise. From joining The Recording Academy®'s Black Music Collective (BMC) Leadership Council alongside H.E.R. and Mickey Guyton to making her debut at Coachella, Yola defines her path and dashes expectation in her wake. Yola also recently appeared on a special CBS Saturday session at D.C’s historic Lincoln Theater. Watch her performance of “Stand For Myself” here.

Yola Brings New Music to Racket on Friday Night
Tumblr media
Yola – Racket – April 19, 2024
With an EP, My Way, on the way, Yola — born in Bristol, England, based in Nashville, Tenn. — headed out on a short tour of smaller rooms to preview the new music in an intimate setting, which brought her to Racket on Friday, her second night at the venue and the final night of her tour.
Tumblr media
I already knew that Yola is a fantastic songwriter and a powerhouse singer, but when it comes to her guitar playing, well, I’m like that Shaq apology meme. She can rip it. Backed by a gifted four-piece (guitar, bass, keys and drums), she took the stage armed with a guitar and launched into “Barely Alive.” “Starlight” followed, Yola crooning, “Wanna feel goooooood” resonating across the room. Without the guitar, she danced joyfully during “Dancing Away in Tears,” which seamlessly segued into “Now You’re Here,” the fourth song off her sophomore LP, Stand for Myself.
Tumblr media
It turns out that Yola is also a great host, the kind who introduces you to the new friends you haven’t yet met at a party. “How you dooooooooing?” she greeted the enthusiastic crowd. “Every time I play you a new song, I’m gonna tell you about it.” And that’s exactly what she did for the next hour-plus: She sang, she danced, she vibed, she entertained, she was wildly funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yola introduced new song “Temporary” by mentioning that “fuckboys are the genre of person who have a very specific use.” She offered, “This next one is about an epiphany I had when I was dating. You go and meet someone and sit down and one minute, two minutes, three minutes … and you realize you’ve met a future enemy, a sleeper-cell nemesis” before the aptly titled “Future Enemies.”
Tumblr media
They went back-and-forth between old and new (in a departure from her first two LPs filled with R&B-fueled soulful Americana with bits of gospel and rock in the mix, the new leans more toward synth-pop and progressive R&B) and after a short encore break, Yola and Co. returned to play covers of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” Yarbrough and Peoples’ “Don’t Stop the Music” and Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” — the dancing crowd handling the “Oh, no, let’s go” duties — before ending with one last new song, the joyous “Ready.”

“Goodnight, I’m Yola. Take care,” she said, blowing kisses to the crowd, leaving everyone smiling. —R. Zizmor | @hand_dog

you're in the habit of denying yourself things.
if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.
but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?
what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.
and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.
you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.
so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.
it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.
sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.
oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.

Danny was...unnerved, which is unusual considering his upbringing as the child of mad scientists obsessed with the undead.
It had been a few weeks since he had moved into Wayne manor after a conflict between batman and his parents, which led to his home and his friends and family being blown up in a lab malfunction. Most of Amity Park was destroyed in the blasts, including Vlad and his mansion.
Usually Danny would be more suspicious of super rich dudes, but the sorrow in Bruce Wayne's eyes as he pleaded to let Danny take him in was genuine and well, Danny didn't exactly have anywhere else to go. Plus, Bruce looked weirdly guilty when danny told him none of this was his fault, which was weird. Jazz was in college and always looked exhausted on video calls, so he didn't want to bother her there.
The part that bothered him most wasn't that there was anything dangerous or bad happening, but rather the opposite.
Danny was used to dodging his home security system when it randomly targeted him. He was used to ghosts popping up out of nowhere to suckerpunch him. He was used to danger.
And now that there was none, he was jumping at shadows.
Things got better when he met Psaro. He was in the process of being either mugged or kidnapped, he wasn't sure, when this angry goth teen with silver hair and ruby eyes literally came in swinging a steel chair. After the beat down and subsequent rescue, Danny offered to buy them some food. Psaro tried to reject the offer until his stomach suddenly growled, making him blush, and Danny dragged the older goth teen to a restaurant.
They've been best friends since. Psaro later introduced him to his friends Rose and Toilen, explaining that they weren't from this world and that Rose was an elf and Toilen was a Teran from a planet called Terrestria. Danny assumed that Psaro was an elf like Rose due to them both having long pointed ears and mostly focused on Toilen thanks to the "other planet" bit.
Meanwhile, the bats have been keeping an eye out on Danny (aka stalking him) and his new, obviously magical friends.

Everyone is all for sex positivity until aroallos want equality, huh?
Everyone is all for stopping the sexualization of women until they’re ace, hm?
Everyone is all for community and openness until cishet aces or aros want to be rightfully recognized as queer, right?
Stop the aphobic bullshit and take a step back. Look at your biases. Look at the language you use and realize how mean you’re being. Learn from your mistakes and become a kinder person.
I used to be aphobic. I didn’t understand how someone could feel little to no romantic attraction especially, and it was because I am very alloromantic. But that is exactly how homophobes look at the rest of the queer community. Since they don’t experience the attraction we do, the choose to believe it’s not real.
Just because you don’t fully understand what it’s like to be aspec doesn’t mean you should be hating aspec people. They are queer too. Fucking treat them as such.
