An Example of Courage, part 2 of the To Live with Honor and Bravery Series
Part 1, Ao3
Rook, previously Red Robin, is one of the most effective Bats there is. He is also blind. A look into exactly how Rook fights, given his technology and League of Assassin training.
Damian was displeased.
He refused to admit he was embarrassed.
He had been assisting Todd at Grayson’s insistence, and the bumbling fool had tipped the enemies to their position. They had been overwhelmed, and Damian had been forced to step down when a barely conscious Red Hood had been threatened.
A Red Hood who was also now awake, and judging by the tension in his shoulders, was just as humiliated.
The Comm was full of chatter as Oracle and Nightwing argued uselessly over how to make the four hour journey from a different state shorter, and kept lamenting that Batman was in space.
Damian was about to give up the pretense of having no communications when he heard the last voice he wanted to hear.
“I’ve got it,” Rook's quiet voice said, “Already scoping out the building.”
“Okay; good luck,” Orphan said, before presumably returning to her case.
There was an uncomfortable pause, and Damian could feel even Red Hood’s exasperation at Gordon and Grayson’s reluctance. How was it that he and Todd, who as a rule disliked Drake, understood he was more than capable of handling himself?
It was ridiculous and stupid and Damian could not inform them as such, or he risked alerting his captors that help was on the way.
He was, however, ready to admit that he was embarrassed that Drake would be the one to perform the rescue.
~~~~~~
Tim ignored Oracle and Nightwing’s pleading that he call on Kon for assistance, and tuned in on the robotic voice of his Seeing Eye Program.
He cleared his mind and focused on the picture it was painting for him.
There were fourteen working cameras in the warehouse.
There were twenty-one goons.
Their boss had already fled, as no one was there currently that matched his description, and the previous footage the cameras had indicated he’d gone for one of the exits.
Sixteen goons were in sight of the cameras.
Robin and Red Hood were in the break room, separated from what Tim knew he was going to have to do. Good.
All the goons had guns; the guns were identified as AK-47s, 30 rounds per gun, rapid fire and single shot possible. High probability that all goons had at least one extra magazine, leading to at minimum 60 rounds per goon, leading to at minimum 1,260 rounds of ammunition.
Best course of action was to ensure that they could not use those guns at all, and the second best course was to make them think they could not.
There were crates full of unknown items, although given the criminal element it was likely it was drugs or explosives. Ergo, highly reinforced and unlikely to break or detonate unless extreme force was used. A few stray bullets would be an acceptable risk, provided the projected outcome.
Tim could work with that.
The time taken between advising he would rescue his brothers and accumulating that information was approximately one minute and twenty seconds.
No time to waste.
Tim gave two sharp, short bird calls, followed by five clicks.
His Program immediately expanded its range of footage it was utilizing, and he listened until it mentioned what he wanted to hear.
The warehouse was on the docks, so underground electrical service wouldn’t be possible. He would have to find the connection on the roof and move from there.
He nodded as the Program finally mentioned where that point was, and moved.
Timing his movements with the patrol he’d already memorized, he leveled his grappler at the direction of the warehouse until the clicks ran together in a soft, continuous noise. He fired, swiftly jumping from the roof at the same time.
The Program immediately switched to prioritizing his mask footage and gave exact calculations for the best landing. It told him where the wall was, at what angle he had to shift himself, his estimated arrival to the other building, and where his estimated landing point would be in relation to the roof of it.
It did all of this in extreme shorthand he himself had designed, based on musical notes.
Tim, as he usually did barring extraneous circumstances, nailed the landing.
It had been one minute and forty-seven seconds.
Using his bo staff to ensure he did not trip on small hazards, Tim maneuvered to where the-yes. There it was.
The Program gave a small chirp of warning, alerting him to an environmental hazard directly in front of him, looking through the eyes of his mask for him.
He gently placed the small charge on the weatherhead, and used a super-glue based adhesive to anchor the service drop lines. That done, he carefully and quietly moved to the other side of the warehouse and hunkered down.
Then he detonated the charge.
A small pop, easily mistaken for faulty wiring.
Power was immediately cut to the warehouse, and he could feel the charge in the air as the electricity angrily searched for somewhere else to go. The adhesive forced the lines to stay in the weatherhead, but by their violent crackling and humming, that metal would absolutely heat up.
The only end result would be a fire; the Program confirmed Tim’s estimation of around twelve minutes for the metal to heat beyond the temperatures that the surroundings could handle.
The goons below him were shouting at each other, a few pot shots going off before the ones that had fired those were ordered to holster their weapons.
Two minutes and thirty-two seconds.
He caught his grapple on the edge of the skylight, and gently opened it.
And jumped down.
“Fuck, is that a grap-?”
Tim’s Bo staff caught the man in his throat and threw him against one of the many crates.
The Program happily informed him that the cameras had a night vision mode.
Well, well.
The sensor between his shoulder blades gave two sharp bursts and he ducked, half turning and bringing his staff up where he knew that the goon’s chin would be.
He heard the garbled shout and the cracking of teeth.
The one he’d hit upon his entrance hadn’t gotten up. Two down.
The Program directed him through the warehouse and around the stacks of crates, allowing him to sneak up on five more and take them down quietly before he was spotted.
Gunfire rang out and Tim dodged in the direction of other goons, resulting in a short yelling match as they tried to figure out if the shooter had actually seen a vigilante or if she’d just spooked and fired at friendlies.
Tim interrupted the woman who had shot at him by sweeping her legs out from under her and introducing her skull to his staff.
She did not get up.
Thirteen left.
The Program advised him that the remaining goons were all in view of the cameras, and the idiots had left Robin and Red Hood alone.
They were already attempting to escape their bonds.
Tim ducked behind a crate, shot his grapple at one of the ceiling joists and dropped down in the middle of the group of three that had been arguing with the previous woman.
Their surprise granted him enough time to lay into one of them and take her out before her friends managed to fumble a flashlight onto Tim.
“Shit, it’s Rook-!”
Tim jumped up and grabbed onto the edge of another crate, hauling himself on top of it as he dodged the gunfire that had been aimed at him from the one behind him, allowing his assailant to hit his own ally, and dropped down again on the one that had fired at him.
Using a flashy move that Lady Shiva would have absolutely disapproved of, he locked his legs around the goon’s neck and threw himself backwards. The goon dropped his gun, forced to fall, as Tim used his momentum to twist around to force the goon to land face first in the concrete.
Three down. Ten left. They had split into two groups of five.
Tim moved quickly, relying on the Program and his Bo Staff to avoid tripping hazards, and flanked the first group. His Program had informed him that his brothers had successfully escaped and were already converging on the second group.
He watched them through his program as he laid flat on one of the crates.
He inhaled.
Held it.
He exhaled.
He dropped a small, specialized EMP over the edge and shorted out their electronics, and then tossed himself over the edge and into the middle of the group.
Their flashlights and cell phones were just as dead as his Program.
They were just as blind as he was, at that moment.
From there, it was his skill and hearing that dictated the fight.
He heard them begin to move, and swept out his Bo staff in a wide arc, knocking three of them off balance. He heard them hit the ground.
He turned towards the two behind him he could hear starting to move forward and dove at them, relying on grappling to take them both down.
He focused on the two, bouncing between them as he kept an ear out on the three picking themselves up from the ground.
Just as they managed to stand, he broke one of his current opponent’s legs and slammed the other’s head into the wall.
Turning his attention on the three, he danced around them and used them as shields against the others.
He redirected a punch to where he’d heard another goon, hooked his foot in one of their knees and shoved at their sternum, turned and taken a punch to the face so he could grab their wrist and throw them over his shoulder.
He was so caught up, he didn’t hear the one he had counted out drag himself up. He didn’t realize until, as he vaulted over one of the last fighters, there was a deafening bang and a flair of pain in his leg.
Fuck.
He finished the vault and grabbed the man he’d been about to take out, using the surprise to force him along as he charged where the shooter was.
“Wait, Dave, don’t shoot-!”
“What the fuck-?”
Tim threw the goon at his friend. Then he swept their legs from under them with his handy-dandy Bo staff, whipped around to land a semi-accidental throat shot at the goon he heard sneaking up behind him (he’d been aiming for where their face should have been, but apparently the man had been a bit tall), and dropped said staff to grab both goons by their hair and slam their heads into the ground until they stopped moving.
He heard the goon he’d gotten his throat shot in on coughing and stepping closer.
Tim waited, pretending like he didn’t notice, and turned around when he was close enough.
He gripped the man’s shoulder and drove a knee into his gut.
“Rook, cease this! That is Red Hood!”
Tim froze, and the person he’d just tried to take out gently patted his shoulder. Tim frowned and reached out, tracing the familiar helmet.
“Whoops. I dropped an EMP, so-”
“Yeah dumbass, we know,” Red Hood wheezed, voice muffled by the helmet, “Our electronics went out too.”
They’d been in range? Shit. He’d miscalculated.
“...Ah. I would imagine that is massively inconvenient to you right now.”
“To us all, Rook. Tt. We lost communication with Oracle.”
Fuck.
Dick was going to be a nightmare to deal with.
~~~~~~
Jason handed his useless helmet to Damian and piggy-backed Tim.
They knew he could walk fine on his own, bleeding leg or not, but a huge part of Tim’s efficiency in battle was his opponents not knowing he was blind.
With his weird nerd-program off, he’d have to use the Bo staff to make sure he didn’t trip or run into a crate. That shit would give him away instantly. So; piggy-back until safehouse.
Tim was grumbling in his ear, but Jason ignored it.
He understood how infuriating it was to have to take help he didn’t need.
After he’d been dipped in the Pits, Talia hadn’t been convinced he’d been completely healed from the brain damage at first. Insisted on servants cutting his food into smaller pieces, reaching out and handing him shit he’d just been about to grab, talking at him slowly and clearly while holding his hand in an iron grip.
It’d been as flattering as it had been annoying. He vaguely remembered getting the same feeling from when he’d still had his brain injury, but unable to vocalize it.
She’d stopped after a few days, but still.
Jason got it.
So he’d let Tim complain, get it out of his system while they got somewhere to change into civvies.
Damian was also complaining, but his was about how unbecoming it was for his rival to be handled like he was delicate.
Jason…didn’t really get that one.
But whatever.
Some kids played dinosaurs with their favorite siblings, Damian tried to fight his to the death. All children were different, or some shit.
They had just stepped out the door when Tim patted his shoulder.
“Also the building is gonna catch on fire in like, four or five minutes. Loose electrical wires heating up metal on the roof.”
Jason dropped Tim on his ass and turned around to drag the criminals out.
“Tell me shit like that sooner!”
~~~~~~
“Yes, Dick, I’m sure I’m fine. Don’t abandon your mission.”
“Are you sure? I can-”
“I’m sure.”
“...Okay. Let me know if a situation comes up.”
“I will,” Tim agreed, signing off from his comm and leaning back against Jason’s mirror.
He twitched from a particularly hard pull of the stitches, and waved off a muttered half-hearted apology.
“...I suppose I should thank you,” Damian said, sounding gruff.
“I suppose you should,” Tim agreed mildly, lifting his leg so that Jason could place the bandage on it properly.
They sat in silence as Damian almost audibly ground his teeth.
“Thanks, Timmers,” Jason filled in, slapping his knee as he stood up and shoved a pair of sweats in Tim’s hands, “Couldn’t have left with as little bloodshed as we did without your help.”
Tim snorted.
“I’ll take Jason’s, Damian, no need to-”
“Thank you,” Damian ground out, “For your assistance. It was invaluable.”
Tim blinked in surprise, facing Damian’s direction.
Holy shit, that was a real show of gratitude.
“Uh…you’re welcome.”
“Do not push your luck, Drake.”
Finally getting help (prt 9)
Masterpost
“So where’s the brother?” Jason asked as he followed Bruce down the hall.
“He’s in Tim’s lab. It seems like they’ll be able to share it, which is good even with as big as this place is I don’t think we have room for two mad science labs,” Bruce said with dry humour, making Jason laugh in spite of himself.
“Tim must be thrilled to have a buddy huh?” He asked, still chuckling. No one in this family was stupid by any means, he often felt like the dumb one and objectively he knew he was still a fucking genius. But even with all of them being That smart no one could keep up with Tim’s innovative and scientific mind.
“I think he might even learn a few things, which is a frightening concept. Danny asked for microwaves and toasters this morning so he could cannibalize them into anti-possession tech. The way that boy combines science and magic is going to give both me and Constantine ulcers.”
Jason snorted, both at the joke and maybe a bit out of pleasure that someone was going to be giving Bruce a hard time. “Well if you need a babysitter don’t call me. I don’t want to deal with any of that,” he chuckled.
“Oh absolutely not, you would only feed into the chaos,” Bruce said quickly making Jason cackle, because he was right.
“Alright,” Bruce murmured to himself when they reached the closed door to the lab, it was almost lost in the banging inside but Jason heard it. Heard Bruce bracing himself for whatever was going to happen when Jason and Danny met.
He opened the door and across the room Jason saw who must be Danny. He was prime adoption bait with his black hair and blue eyes, but he was… absolutely beautiful, slight and elven, gently curved and wired with muscle. Jason froze, and it seemed so did Danny, staring at each other from across the room. Butterflies fluttered in Jason’s stomach, building till they didn’t feel like butterflies but something buzzing, trying to get out. He could hear the growl coming from his chest, not his throat.
Danny’s eyes swirled with green and he vaulted over the work table, abandoning the half finished tech he was working on to lunge at Jason. He collided with Jason with a snarl of his own, Jason growled and flipped Danny over his shoulder, the hall was a closed space so Danny twisted, running into the wall feet first and landing in a crouch. Jason twisted so he didn’t have his back to a wall anymore as Danny lunged at him again and Jason dodged, pushing off the wall to give himself momentum as he threw himself after Danny.
Danny grabbed Jason’s arm and used his momentum to throw him over his hip, following him down to the ground, barely missing as Jason rolled away. He didn’t even think to draw a weapon, that wasn’t what this fight was about, they weren’t actually trying to hurt each other. Even as Jason punched down so hard he cracked the floor he somehow knew Danny would dodge, and wouldn’t get hurt. And Danny did, he got out of the way and lashed out in return, kicking Jason in the chest and sending him flying a few feet back giving Danny time to scramble back to his feet and chase after him.
This give and take carried them down the hall and to the landing by the stairs. Somewhere in the background Jason knew that someone was shouting at them to stop, and to be careful, but he wasn’t listening. He was too focussed on the growl emanating from Danny, and from himself which were starting to smooth out again, to feel less like desperate insects trying to escape and more like a cat’s purr, or some sort of song. They were reaching equilibrium, some sort of harmony.
He didn’t realize how close they were to the stairs until Danny knocked him back again and this time when he stepped back he didn’t land on solid ground. The two of them tumbled down the stairs, rapidly switching who was on top as they fell. Jason could feel himself collecting bruises but he didn’t fucking care.
They came to a halt at the bottom of the stairs with Jason on top, his forearm pressed against Danny’s chest just below his throat. They were both breathing hard, staring at each other with wide blue-green eyes. The growling died down, lowering down into purrs harmonizing with each other as they caught their breath. Jason’s was lower and Danny’s a little higher, it was a hypnotic sound that made Jason feel… peaceful.
Danny moved first, reaching up slowly to touch Jason’s face, but before he could Jason realized what they had done and the position he was in. He had fought with Danny, and he was now pinning an abused teenager to the floor straddling his waist. This looked bad and now that he realized what was happening it Felt worse! He practically shot up off of Danny and was about to bolt before Danny grabbed his hand.
“Wait! Don’t go yet! Let me just, let me get you a specter-deflector so no one can possess you first okay?” Danny asked, sounding oddly desperate and even though Jason wanted to run he nodded.
Danny looked relieved and let go of Jason before suddenly flying up and through the floor above them. Jason blinked at the ceiling above him before looking around him.
Oh dear, Bruce, Tim, Damian, and Jazz were all watching from the landing above. Damian looked like he wanted to kill Jason himself, Bruce looked disappointed, Tim impassive and Jazz looked… Excited? Why did she look happy?
Danny flew back down through the floor before anyone could think of what to say. “Okay! Here’s the specter-deflector,” He said, clicking something that looked like a watch into place around Jason’s wrist. “That’ll protect you, this is a blaster,” he said, handing Jason an odd sci-fi looking gun. “It’ll reload automatically from ambient ectoplasm, it works best against dead and undead but it can hurt humans too. And.. um, this is my number,” He said, blushing furiously as he handed Jason a slip of paper. “Please text me?”
When had Jason’s mouth gotten so dry?! He had to lick his lips before he answered, painfully aware of how hot his cheeks were and that he must be blushing too. He didn’t blush much, not since his death and resurrection, but he was absolutely blushing now, and he was still purring too if more softly now. He didn’t even know that he could purr, not really. “Ya, Yes, I’ll text you,” he promised before he fled the house. He would have to have some of Alfred’s lasagna later, just then he desperately needed to calm down and clear his head.
-----
Jazz was practically vibrating with excitement and as soon as the door had closed behind Jason she couldn’t contain it anymore. She squealed as she vaulted over the railing of the landing and landed in the foyer and sprinting over to Danny. “Danny what the heck! You have a crush?! I haven’t seen you that passionate in ages!” She enthused scooping Danny up under his arms and twirling him around.
“Jaaazz,” Danny complained even as he went kitten limp in her arms letting her hold him at arms length nearly a foot off the floor.
“I didn’t even know you liked boys! Why didn’t you tell me you like boys!?” Jazz demanded, shaking him a little.
“I didn’t really, I mean I always preferred girls. The only guy I ever really had a crush on was Dash and-” He cut off when Jazz made a disgusted face. “Exactly! That was never going to happen and he was an asshole so I didn’t want to talk about it!”
“Okay ya I understand- Wait you were making fun of me for having a thing for bad boys when your type is asshole meathead jocks!? Ohhh you’re never going to hear the end of this baby brother!”
“Oh my god No!” Danny groaned, finally squirming out of Jazz’s hold and dropping back to the ground stepping back.
He turned towards the Wayne’s who had made their way down the stairs while the siblings were talking. “Is Jason an asshole?” He demands of Tim, he’s probably the fairest judge in Danny’s estimation.
“Absolutely,” Tim said promptly before realizing what he said and backtracking a little. “But I’m his brother, I'm supposed to say that. Jason’s heart is in the right place, he's a good guy, just kinda violent and a complete jerk,” Tim said.
“Perfect,” Danny said his expression a little dreamy.
“Why on earth would you have a crush on Todd?! You could do so much better!” Damian squawked indignantly, breaking the tension and making everyone besides Bruce laugh, and even he smiled just a little.
“I want to say you did well Bruce, I know it was hard not to break up the fight but so? It was good for them, I hope it won’t be too hard on you if they do end up dating,” Jazz said, patting Bruce’s arm.
He shifted from one foot to the other a little awkwardly but then shook his head. “No it won’t be, I mean it won’t be the first time, Barbra was as good as my daughter and she dated Dick, and Steph and Tim dated. It’s always a little awkward but I’d rather that than a Super,” He said, shooting Tim a look, he cleared his throat and looked away.
“Well good, we’ll see how this works out but really,” she turned back towards Danny. “This could be good! You’ve always been attracted to violent people but I don’t think that your ghost instincts realized that when Val was shooting at you it wasn’t bonding for her the same way it was for you,” she told him, her tone borderline accusatory.
Danny looked down and shifted from side to side, giving a little shrug. “I know, but she was a good girlfriend, when she wasn’t being Red Huntress and I wasn’t being Phantom. When we were just Danny and Val, it was good.”
“Oh Danny,” She sighed and pulled him into a hug. “I know, but he has the same instincts as you, I’m rooting for you Danny.”
“Thanks Jazz,” Danny said softly, hugging her back.
“Welp, I’m heading back to the lab,” Tim said, obviously uncomfortable with the genuine emotions he made a break for it before he could get roped into any hugs.
Bring Me Home Arc 2 Part 8
Time for another WIP Wednesday! Hope you enjoy.
Story Summary: Tim and Danny are both neglected by parents who care more about their work than their families. They deal with this by spending too much time online and find each other playing MMORPGs. They keep up their friendship as Tim becomes Robin and Danny becomes Phantom and don't bother keeping secrets from each other.
Bart grinned. “Well, we’ll just have to take those odds! So, now that we’ve got the basics down, we’re going out there to help, right?”
Sam snorted. “Not like we could keep Danny out of it if we tried. But you guys don’t have to. You can just go to bed.”
Danny sighed. “School tomorrow is gonna suck.”
Tim shook his head. “Aren’t you gonna call out?”
“No?” replied Danny. “How could I? Mom and Dad would never let me call out just because of some ghosts and they won’t know I’ll have been out all night.”
“Would they even notice if you call yourself out? Or ask Jazz to do it?”
Danny snorted. “School is about the only thing they notice. Look, I’ll be fine. I’ll fall asleep in English. Probably get another detention. I’ve A plusses in algebra and chemistry, so those teachers don’t care when I fall asleep. I’m a known slacker in gym. History is after lunch, so I’ll be able to stay awake for that. I’ve got this. It’ll be fine.”
“Danny…” And here Tim had thought his schooling was a disaster.
“Don’t, Tim. Now,” Danny forced his voice to be more cheerful as he changed the subject, “if you’re all joining me, we’ve got three thermoses. I get one. The rest of you can fight over the other two.”
Tim waved his hand. “I want one!”
Tucker sat down on the floor. “I’m out. Unlike someone, I need to sleep before class in—” he checked his PDA “—seven hours.”
Sam let out a yawn. “Yeah, I’m with Tuck on this one. We’re taking your bed, Danny. When was the last time you changed your sheets?”
Danny shrugged. “Dunno. I think Jazz got to them last week. Or was that the week before?”
“Right. We know where the spares are. Come on, Tuck.”
“Wait, if you’re staying here," said Danny, "any chance you can fix up Cassie, Bart, and Conner’s phone before you go to bed?”
Tucker shrugged. “Sure. Should be able to do at least two of them. You haven’t moved any of the tools, have you?”
“Left some of them out on the desk, but they’re there.”
“All right. Everyone! Pass me your phones. I’ll get at least two of them working tonight.”
Conner passed his over, but said, “Focus on Cassie’s and Bart’s. They’ve more people who will be worried about them and I’ve no doubt Bruce told Clark where I am and he has Tim’s number.”
“Will do!”
Bart handed his over. “Thanks, dude. You really don’t have to if it’s too much trouble.”
“Nah. After how much Danny and I messed with ecto-contaminating electronics, I could do this in my sleep.”
Sam snorted. “Well, if you don’t get started, you’ll be putting that claim to the test. Come on, tech boy. Let’s get going.”
“Sleep well!” Cassie called out after them.
“Don’t let the ghosts bite,” added Danny.
Sam huffed a laugh in a way that told Tim she’d heard the joke more than a few times before. Tucker didn’t even react and just kept walking.
“So…” started Conner once they were alone, “should we suit up?”
Danny hesitated. “If you do, Sam and Tuck will know your identities.”
Everyone looked to Tim. He chewed his lip. On the one hand, Sam and Tucker had known and kept Danny’s secret for months. But they did tend to get in arguments and make problems worse based on storied Danny had shared. But his friends had bonded rather quickly with the Amity trio and Conner, at least, definitely needed more friends their age.
“Our goals for tonight are evacuation and limiting property damage. Ambulances still can’t get into the downtown area and victims can’t escape. They’ll trust us more if we’re in costume. And at the end of the day, people’s safety is the most important. Danny, can you promise me Sam and Tucker can keep our secrets.”
“I promise, Tim. They’ll keep it as well, no better, than mine.”
Tim really hoped he was making the right choice even as he nodded. “Then let’s suit up. Where can we do that unseen?”
“Oh, that part’s easy!” said Danny. “You can change in the spare bedroom and I’ll just fly you all out invisibly and drop you off downtown.”
“Can you carry all of us?” asked Tim. “Have you ever tested your super strength?”
“Kon and I can fly ourselves,” added Cassie. “What do you need to transfer your invisibility?”
“Indirect contact should be fine. So I can carry Tim and Bart and if you each hold hands with one of them, it should work.”
“I don’t like ‘shoulds,’” said Tim. “Let’s test it.”
“Fair enough.” Danny moved until he was standing between Tim and Bart and wrapped an arm around each of them before lifting them into the air.
“Holy shit,” whispered Bart.
Tim couldn’t help but agree. He’d flown many times with Conner or Cassie or even Clark. But it never felt like this. The pull of gravity was always present and something he could feel. Yet with Danny? There was no gravity. Being in the air felt as normal as being on the ground. And Danny’s arm around his chest was warm and solid.
“What?” asked Danny. “Haven’t you flown with one of your teammates before?”
Tim couldn’t hold back a laugh. This was amazing. “Their flight doesn’t entirely cancel out gravity like yours does. Can we go out for fun before we leave? This is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.”
“Sure thing, Secrets. Whatever you want.”
“Thanks, Polaris.” The news report still playing on the computer brought him back to the present. “But that’s a discussion for later. Sorry for getting distracted. Kon? Cassie? Grab our hands. Let’s see if this works.”
Turned out that not only could Danny make them all invisible and intangible, but his anti-gravity style flight would apply to everyone as well. Apparently flight wasn’t something that required super strength and Tim was definitely updating Danny’s power profile because this was unbelievable. He wanted to run so many tests.
It took five minutes to strip out of their protective gear and turn off the computer, then another ten to change into costume. Most of their bags had been stored in the guest room already.
During that time, Bart claimed the last thermos and they split into teams of two. Robin and Superboy would help ambulances and emergency vehicles get in and out of downtown safely and Impulse and Wonder Girl would help evacuation downtown. Phantom would stay downtown and try to figure out if the portals could be closed preventing more ghosts from crossing over.
Danny went back to his room to grab earpieces that could be used as communicators and ask Sam to turn the ghost shield back on in five minutes, then they were flying back to the scene of the attack.
It felt so much better to be back in costume and ready to do something. Though he was definitely going to have to ask Danny for the specs to the ghost weapons. Next time he came to visit, they’d be in Robin’s colors.
The chaos in the downtown area had gotten much worse in the time they’d been gone sorting out weaponry and plans. Most businesses sported broken windows and cars were overturned on the street. Half the people appeared to be overshadowed and the other half were cowering and hiding.
Danny set them down carefully and Bart immediately disappeared to find those who were trapped.
“I’ll go check out the portal and let you know what I find.”
“Very good, Phantom. We’ll do what we can on the ground. If you see something that needs our attention, let us know.”
Danny gave him a salute. “Will do, Robin.”
“All right, you two ready?”
“Always,” said Conner.
“We’ve faced worse odds,” added Cassie.
“Then let’s get going.” This was going to be a very long night.
Hope you enjoyed! The plot is moving forward slowly but surely. We're still only in the first, like, 3 minutes of the DP episode, so yeah. I may have to speed some things up. I'm just bad at that.
This will be the last week I tag people for updates to this story. There's three reasons for that. Tumblr is making it more difficult to tag users and splitting the list over two posts is kinda a pain. Many people I tag don't seem to interact with the post and I don't know if everyone is still interested in following this story. And I'm nervous about being shadow banned since that's happened to at least one writer in this fandom as I'm sure we all know by now.
welcome weary traveler you’ve made it to chapter eight! It’s been a long time since I’ve updated, sorry!
Jason was very okay with being a zombie. It was what he joked about when things got overwhelming. He now had a new specific descriptor and a support system he never knew existed. I was strange. The level of self reliance he was used to was now no longer needed. If he were to fall ill he wouldn’t be met with confusion at his vitals or being treated like a case unheard of prior. It was comforting to have someone say, “that’s totally normal, it happened to me”. This would lose a bit of its luster as Jason phased through the kitchen floor with a yelp for the fifth time in ten minutes.
Danny grabbed onto his arm and pulled to no avail.
“Try to fly up instead just accepting your fate.”
Jason was too busy clawing at the floor like a cat being dragged to a bath to heed his advice. This was also to no avail as his arms swished through the floor like it was mist and he fell completely.
Tim was having a very entertaining morning. Watching idly as his older brother’s legs dangled and flailed from the ceiling of the bat cave made his coffee much more enjoyable. He had made a bet with Cass on how many times Jason would fall through before he got used to his newfound abilities. Cass had more faith in him than he did saying that he would fall under 200 times.
FWUMP
By the way things were looking Tim would not have to fight the condiment king for a whole month!
Jason was getting tired feeling like every step was a gamble. Danny was little help. The most he did was graciously build a barrier so that he wouldn’t fall into the mantle of the earth. Witnessing the feat was bewildering. He was scampering about the bat cave picking things up, asking “do you use this?” And then promptly dropping or tearing apart the tech based on the answer. He haphazardly squeezed together a projector-like device and turned it on, producing a neon green grid.
“What is that?” Jason asked as he tested this mesh with his foot.
Danny jumped onto the grid, displaying its bounciness.
“Baby proofing!” Danny joked
“As you develop your powers you’re not going to be able to fully regulate your intangibility. So until you’re phase trained this will help you from sinking into the ground.”
Was Jason going to sink into the ground? Phase training? Jason was getting a bit worried… it was probably fine.
THWUMP
Just as soon as Jason got up the stairs and got his lunch together he fell again. Green was starting to tinge the edge of his vision.
“That’s 15 times today! Start prepping your anti ketchup wash kit!”
Tim was keeping count? They bet on how many times he would fall?! Jason was starting to seethe.
“Jason! Try to think solid thoughts if your feeling yourself slipping!” Danny said, sticking his head through the floor.
Not helpful. Jason did not respond. He was very tired of falling. The first time had been a shock to everyone but Danny. They had all been eating dinner together, a small miracle, and Jason just fell out of his chair. He made a sound comparable to a perfectly cut scream as he was in one room then clipped into the next.
Right now the only thing Jason could do was think of that and breathe in an effort to calm himself down.
Tim took a tentative step back. “You okay?”
Jason thought the answer was quite obvious and simply glared in Tim’s direction.
Danny flew down from the kitchen and procured a glass of ectoplasm from the tanks and placed it into Jason’s hands.
“Drink.”
Jason drank and was immediately was full of much less rage than before. Great. He needed baby proofing and now got hangry like a toddler. Just great. At least he could see the humor in Tim’s bet now.
“Your wager.”
Tim was still tentative about the situation. “…Yeah?”
Jason downed the rest of the ectoplasm
“I want in. I bet less than 50.”
Help <3 DC x DP idea
Hi friends, I need help fleshing out this idea for a fanfic I want to write and figured I’d ask the masses!
The idea is that Danny has been immortal for quite some time now. He’s lived millennia and at one point met his soulmate. The thing is, his soulmate keeps choosing to be reincarnated every time they die. Every time they get reincarnated they don’t remember Danny but he remembers them. Every reincarnation feels a pull to Danny, though. The more time they spend with one another, the more their memories of past lives come back piece by piece. When they die, Danny gets a few years with them before they get reincarnated.
IDK if the soulmate just chooses to get reincarnated each time or if there’s a curse that forces it. I’m kinda leaning towards cursed.
Whatever the reason, each time they’re reincarnated, Danny seeks them out because his core yearns for its mate but usually only when the soulmate hits the age twenty.
For whatever reason, this time around, Danny finds them earlier than usual. He finds them as a small child. Now this is where I need opinions.
Option 1. Dead Serious
Danny finds Damian when he’s still a child training to be the Demon’s Head and decides that he has to protect his soul mate this time around, he realizes that Damian has no love from anyone and is like I need to show him he’s loved. he’s horrified that his soul mate is being raised as an assassin and decides to haunt him as his imaginary friend just until Damian is able to get away from the League safely. He cleans any wounds that Damian gets, he helps him when he can, basically tries his best to help Damian without getting in trouble too much for interfering. He stops haunting Damian when he’s taken to Wayne Manor and then he goes back to the realms until it’s time for him to actually seek Damian out.
Option 2. Dead Tired
Same concept but with Tim, except instead he sees that his soul mate is just insanely lonely and is left at home constantly so he just haunts Tim to be someone that the boy can rely on and not feel as lonely. He teaches Tim how to fight and defend himself from bullies, he teaches him tech, they just have fun together. Ofc same thing, when Tim goes to live with Bruce, Danny goes back to the realms knowing that his soul mate is going to be taken care of.
Option 3. Dead on Main
Danny finds Jason and sees that his family is drug addicts and is like uh uh no way gotta take care of him. He gives Jason companionship, gives him food so he doesn’t starve and just generally makes sure that Jason’s taken care of. Once he’s adopted, he leaves. With this one though, when jason dies Danny finds him and is like noo, it’s way too early. Jason gets his memories back and is super happy to see Danny but Danny’s like it’s not your time, you need to go back and sends Jason back. He later finds Jason again when he becomes Red Hood and realizes that when Jason was sent back it caused him to be confused as heck and the pits are what keeps him from remembering Danny because him dying too early and being sent back broke the cycle somehow. but now Danny’s gotta help heal him from the pit rage and also help his soul mate because he’s a crime lord now and Danny wasn’t exactly expecting that this time around.
Anyway, it won’t let me make this a poll without fucking up the post. So, if you would just reply or reblog with tags telling me which idea you think is best, that would be great. I really can’t decide and really wanna write this fic but I have sooo many ideas for all three.
Part Of A Work In Progress
Marinette burrowed into a soft blanket as the news played on a very large TV. She lazily turned up the volume as the video switched to be infront of a semi-demolished building. A woman in a purple pantsuit waved her arms to get the attention of someone. Soon, Ironman landed infront of the cameraman.
"Mr. Stark! You just saved tons of people from a burning building, how do you do it?"
"Like he does everything, with narcissism." Tim muttered from Marinette's left. She blinked at him. A round of hums in agreement came from all Waynes and Wayne-adjacents in the room. She watched in a mixture of amusement and fascination as the comments slowly escalated.
At one point Jason put his book down and joined the people on the couch in mocking the hero. Marinette knew for a fact that Cass hadn't been holding a "Ironman's a JERK" sign at the beginning of this, but she was now. Steph was burning a shirt with the Ironman symbol. Damian was standing on the back of the couch, monologuing about how he was a disgrace. Tim was standing on an armchair, how he got there she didn't know, and was somehow agreeing with Damian while insulting him? Duke was chanting 'burn the hierarchy' as if that was something perfectly normal. Marinette is pretty sure Babs was recording this; most likely for blackmail. If it wasn't for the mischievous smiles on their faces, and their night-time activities, Marinette would be worried she was living with supervillains.
"Mr. Stark, people are saying that you are living proof that superheroes could reveal their identities without danger to their loved ones, do you agree with this take?"
A suffocating silence filled the room as all those present fixated on the screen. Marinette swore none of them were breathing.
"That is completely false. People I care about have been put in danger, and that's with all the tech and money possible."
Marinette watched as they all did a double take. She could practically see them all rebooting. Not long after they shook off their shock and continued on.
Jason returned to his book. Damian climbed off the couch and used a cup of water to put out the growing flames. Tim pulled off his jacket and mopped up the excess water. Cass folded up the sign and slipped it between the couch cushions. Dick, who had been watching this all unfold, shook his head fondly. Steph gathered the popcorn that was spilled in the anarchy. Duke went back to writing in his handheld notepad.
At this point Marinette's eyes were comically large, and she couldn't fight the laughter that came bubbling out of her. Everyone's eyes whipped to Marinette, almost as if they forgot she was there; except Cass because she's Cass. Nobody did anything until Dick started laughing too. Noise filled the room, but this time because of laughter and jokes rather than criticisms.
That was how Bruce found them later, all except Damian laughing. When asked what was going on, they all just fell silent and exited through different entry points. Bruce blinked. Looking around the now empty room, he decided that he was better off not knowing the cause of the newest burn mark on the coffee table.
at a certain point in fics, sexism based off negligence (aka, “it’s been 40K and not a single female character has mattered at best or has even been mentioned at worst”) is just straight up ooc to the guy characters you’ve included. bc unless you intend your protagonist to be sexist, he would have cared about a woman within the last 40K and 3 months.
because tim wouldn’t just forget about cass. he loves her. kon wouldn’t disrespect ma by ignoring her. he loves her. dick would have called donna to ask her how she’s doing by now. because, yep, he loves her. damian would have thought about his mother by now. because yes it’s complicated but he loves her. clark would have recalled lois’s pragmatism by now and thought about how her thoughts might be valuable. because. he. loves. her. (and her opinion is indeed valuable). and even outside the realm of love, bruce would have asked barbara for her expertise. bruce would also ask diana for advice over clark on most matters. and dick would defer to kory or donna on emotional matters. and stephanie was good at making damian feel safe to be a kid. and so on. and so on.
like it or not, these women matter to these men. if you think these guys don’t seek out the women in their lives’ expertise, assistance, comradarie, friendship — you’re missing out.
and, if we’re keeping score, on a purely pragmatic level, they’re capable. and if you want to write capable men, you need to write them taking advice and cues from capable women. and sometimes, having their asses kicked by capable women is also what makes the story realistic.
so ma would have better parenting advice than alfred. and barbara would have solved tech issues faster than tim. and diana would have more wisdom than clark. and talia would have won that fight. and kory would also have won that fight. and cass DEFINITELY would have won that fight. do you get it?
like it or not, these women matter, and are skilled. not including them and not allowing the men in dc to see utilize their value makes it seem, ultimately, like you’re intentionally writing sexist guy characters for overlooking them.
because… seriously. do you really want someone reading your fic to be wondering, in the back of their mind, if this version of tim is just sexist and that’s why he doesn’t think about his girl friends at all? because at this point that’s what i wonder when i hit 40K and he hasn’t even briefly wondered how cass or stephanie or cassie are doing, let alone his civilian girl friends and female mentors.
the men in this fiction know the women around them have rich inner lives, and amazing skills. you could at least try to acknowledge them too, fandom.
mer au ramblings under cut ↓
i was thinking about the mers and their behaviors in particular-- i can't remember if i've ever really talked about it (if i have it's on one of the older posts? probably under one of the asks from capricorn) but bc i had spotted that recent thing i drew in my canvas library the mers are so cat-like in my head. or something. i do think they hide under their tails a lot when they get upset or embarrassed and stuff but that's probably more coming from i think they hide away in little caves and stuff normally and its like just a placeholder behavior sorta deal. they like the dark and small spaces bc like tims got that cave he likes to go to a lot (he takes kon there eventually--idk if ive ever mentioned tims little hideaway lol)
i do think they also like to smack each other with their tails as a playing thing which is fun until its a human and they get absolutely wasted by 30+ lbs of pure muscle. i do think it would be hilarious if in some of the first interactions dick smacks someone and there is very quickly rules established. he ends up only being able to play with jason until he goes . "missing". (tbh this is making me think about little dick and jason and im getting very teary. thinking about bruce deciding to reach out to the humans as a way to help protect both himself and his sons from poachers and stuff. gets them access to medicine.)
i DO think that dick and jason woulda been much closer in this though and i feel like being honest mers kinda have shorter lifespans in the wild? (bruce is probably still pretty young by human standards i think, but is getting up there by mer standards) limited access to food + getting into fights + poachers. actually the fighting aspect is interesting to me because i dont think i've thought much of it before? the only natural defenses they have are teeth, nails and tail. i think mer fights would probably be very quick and typically escalate fairly fast. (also realizing bruce would definitely be a killer in this au by virtue of protecting his territory + his family. wonder if it would turn into a more he doesnt want his kids to have to ever kill? but idk bc that would be a part of the lifestyle of a mer, and they would need to know how to defend themselves anyway) weak points definitely tail fins and throat. fins specifically because they cant swim without them so they'd just kinda sink and rot at the bottom of the ocean if they dont have someone helping them; which is to say in the case of shredded fins because jason kept his fins but theres holes in them which Does effect his swimming speed but only because of the holes and not the material of his fin (i do think the humans have tech that could theoretically replace tail fins in order to help them swim again but they wouldn't be as durable as their natural fins. wouldn't be able to tolerate fast swimming. probably what would've happened to babs--i don't think ive ever addressed her in this au? i should go and design some of the people that are missing. i think shed be reallyyyy pretty.) but i think that once a fight is determined to be to death they just go for the throat/gills.
regardless that is to say that the hiding behavior i think is funny and i do fully believe the first time kon or jon sees it they immediately make a cat comment and then show pictures. depending on who the mer is/their landside education they dont even know what cats are which would be kinda funny i think. hilarious to me if damian convinces jon to bring a cat because he wants to meet it (he definitely still loves animals--probably bffsies w some of the sharks and other animals in their territory.) I DESPERATELY WANT KON TO BRING KRYPTO oh god kory would have a heart attack if he snuck krypto in. bart would love him. i think tim and cassie would be a little ehhh about him but krypto so sweet just a little baby .
i had talked about a while ago that i should try to work bernard in--i think itd be kinda silly if there were a bunch of tims like comic HS friends that are just interns or something in different areas of the facility and stuff and they all end up kinda becoming friends anyway. bernard, darla, ives, etc. idrc if it doesnt make sense this entire au is a trainwreck anyway lol
ACTUALLY very funny to me i was thinking abt how tim gets a little demanding in getting carried/carted around on land and he finds out kinda quick most the people there can't actually lift them up (kon can technically lift tim/bart/cassie but he Struggled at first). him asking ives to take him to a different tank and ives just gives him a really long look before getting a wheelchair and helping tim drag himout of his current tank LOL i think there would be lots of cursing and sniping from both sides .
ill wrap this up but now im thinking abt mer courtship stuff--idk if ive ever talked about that here? its kinda silly LOL
So I finally finished all the first fifty questions for @spookyvalentine Shepard Questionnaire. I feel like I ramble with most of these so whoops
Tumblr media
1. Why did Shepard enlist? Any regrets?
So Jenn is earthborn and adheres to that canon of being in a gang. As she got older she didn’t really want to be doing what she was doing and her biotics were starting to kick in. She knew that the gang would want to exploit that (and they started to try).
A close friend (older brother figure) also knew that and had been urging her to think about her options. After a bust from the police, they offer her a deal after seeing her out of control biotics and her skill in tech. Idk if that’s how it works but oh well
2. How does your Shepard feel about having a yeoman assigned to them in 2? And in 3?
Shepard doesn’t like the fact that Kelly is psychoanalyzing them and then reporting to TIM. She’s already going through so much emotionally and mentally and having to watch what she does is just another burden. Kelly seems fine but Shepard doesn’t make a whole lot of effort to know about her. She is the epitome of professionalism to Kelly. (Though having Kelly help sort the spam mail is great)
Energetic, smart, and willing to do what Traynor needs, means Shepard likes her. Traynor makes sure Shepard sees the important emails bc she always forgets. Shepard appreciates the leads Traynor gives her.
3. What’s their relationship with Anderson?
 Mentor & mentee. Anderson came to N7 to do some teaching for Shepard’s class and Anderson noticed that Shepard was a promising candidate. (Maybe saw himself in her). Anderson was one of the first people to reach Elysium (is this canon? No) and they get closer after that.
4. Is your Shepard any good at poker?
Yes. Shepard is really good at hustling people at most card games and like billiards. Liara has refused to play with her. Vega has yet to learn this lesson. Kaidan is someone who can give her a run for her money.
5. How well does Shepard know their crew? Not just the companions, but the folks making up the Normandy.
Shepard makes it a point to know the crew that she’s in charge of and asks questions based on what they’ve previously told her. In 1, when she’s doing her rounds and meeting people this is one of the times she notices Nihlus watching her.
2, it takes a while before she can psych herself up to do rounds outside of her ground crew bc its Cerberus and when she does it’s mainly out of spite. Meeting her crew, she learns of their beliefs and why the joined and well, TIM is good at picking the right people. They’re not awful. Her rounds make the crew like her (not just respect her) and inspire even more loyalty in her which makes after the Collector base better in that she doesn’t have to fight with them when she leaves TIM.
3, she does her rounds but she doesn’t stay with individual people as long as before. She really doesn’t have the time nor the energy to keep up the same routine. But the crew notice the effort.
6. Initial reaction to EDI? Does it change?
Classic she doesn’t trust AI, especially Cerberus AI but EDI proves herself and Shepard calls her an ally by the end of 2.
Learning what EDI does after they leave TIM and the escape from Earth just really cements in Shepard that trusting EDI was a good idea. They’re EDI’s crew and EDI’s part of Shepard’s crew.
7. Does their love interest move into their quarters?
Garrus does move in around halfway through 3, yes. Shepard is practically always in Commander mode during the war and with Garrus she doesn’t need to be anything so he stays up in the cabin during down times a lot with her and it just makes sense to move his stuff. (Does Garrus freak out that they’re moving in? Possibly. Shepard will never know)
8. What is their reaction to the Alchera mission? And after?
Ohhhhh boy. Okay so. I’m actually trying to write something about this but basically when Shepard reads Hackett’s message she’s pissed. Like the Alliance left the dog tags down there for two years?
She puts its off but eventually what convinces her to do it is bc her crew and their family is her duty and like hell will she balk at it.
Doesn’t mean it’s fun. Her and Joker have an emotional heart to heart about it that helps clear the air between them and make it less awkward.
Shepard isolates herself for a bit afterwards, coming to terms that that is where she died but she’s alive now. Garrus shows up to give her food and she actually lets him in.
9. What type of fighter is your Shepard? Do they fight with honor, or do they fight dirty?
Jenn initially fought dirty, bc of the gang, she fought to survive most of the time. But the Alliance trained her (mostly) out of it. She doesn’t and didn’t kill unarmed civilians if she could and if someone surrendered she almost always just took them in. Now… Elysium, on the other hand. Those dirty tricks came into play during the raid. One of the reasons she managed to win and stay alive.
10. Does Shepard keep any pets? The hamster, fish, something else?
Jenn does get the hamster in 2 (Mr. Spocket the Third), tries to keep fish but they kept dying so gave up. I know you can have Kelly come up and feed them, but I feel like Jenn wants to keep that space hers as much as she can. In three though, someone (idk who yet) gifts her the VI so she can finally keep her fish alive and as the war progresses her crew keep gifting her new fish.
11. What order does Shepard pick up companions in me2?
She goes to Omega first bc yeah they DO need Mordin working ASAP but picks Garrus up first after Zaeed bc of his precarious position. After learning it was Garrus, she is immensely relieved that she did and tries not to let the what if’s run wild.
Then it’s Mordin, Jack, Grunt. Shepard hits the Citadel after Horizon bc that’s what would make Jenn tell the Council to cram their Spectre offer up their ass. She saw what happened their and they still want to write it off? Fine. So Kasumi then. Tali, Thane, Samara, Legion. I believe that’s everyone.
12. Does Shepard have any nicknames? What do they think of 'em?
Shepard doesn’t mind nicknames. Kasumi’s ‘Shep’ is great and some of the ground team incorporate it too (Tali, Jacob, Joker (I know he’s not ground team).
Jack’s ‘girl scout’ irks her the tiniest bit bc she was never a Girl Scout but doesn’t mind bc Jack cares enough to give her a nickname.
James calls her loco. Which- fair enough. She doesn’t mind this either bc yeah, she does a lot of buck wild shit.
13. How does your Shep react to teasing/ribbing?
- She gives as good as she gets. She thinks it’s fun but she always is watching and making sure no one is taking it too far, especially her bc she’s the commanding officer. She doesn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.
14. Any good at flirting?
She’s not bad at it, but isn’t going to be teaching a class on it either. She gives good enough advice to friends but she hasn’t really had a lot of practice in her life and that’s fine to her.
It helps that Garrus is even more awkward.
15. What colors does Shepard prefer for their armor?
Black or dark blood red. She lost a bet in her early days as a marine and had to wear an acid trip for a color scheme. She wore it longer than she had to bc everyone’s reactions are hilarious and it maybe grew on her.
Acid trip in question had a black base, but neon green, pink, and yellow accents and patterns. She tried to make it look coherent. She somewhat succeeded.
16. Is Shepard a drinker? History of other substances? Do they struggle with sobriety?
The gang tried to get her hooked on red sand bc of her biotics, but her brother figure got her out of that. Shepard drinks sometimes, and only when other people are drinking too and it’s never a lot.
She shares that drink with Chakwas every time bc she cares about her doctor.
17. How does Shepard react to attention? Do they enjoy it?
Fan and hero worship? Get her the fuck outta here. But she likes being part of conversations and telling stories.
Of the more romantic attention, doesn’t necessarily know what to do when she doesn’t reciprocates and feels really awkward.
18. Who’s the dream team? Which companions does Shepard fight best with and why?
I said it before, I’ll say it again, who ever she can cause the best explosions with is the dream team. So most of her biotic squad she meshes well with.
She loves fighting with Wrex bc they can just become chaotic, biotic destructive tanks that the enemy wants to get rid of immediately which opens them up to the third member. Which in 1, was mostly Tali or Garrus.
Kaidan and her are great together in 3 bc it’s super easy to set up explosions with him and she appreciates Reave (which she also likes using with Samara)
19. Are there any companions your Shepard just absolutely cannot vibe with or relate to?
I feel like Jenn would be uncomfortable with Zaeed bc she can see that if she stayed in the gang, this was her future. She could have been him.
Initially, she stayed clear of Miranda and Jacob, but Jacob’s a likeable guy and after some pushing, and Miranda’s loyalty mission she starts to see them as allies and friends instead of simple coworkers.
20. Does Shepard enjoy looking for resources and upgrading gear, or do they see it as a chore?
Shepard always wants to upgrade her gear and scanning for resources is a nice mind numbing activity that she can lose her self in.
21. Do you have any AUs for your Shepard?
I do have a Nihlus lives AU where he and Shepard get together. It’s not very fleshed out and barely there but I have it.
And of course, Kal’Reegar joins the team in 2 and they get together.
22. What’s the last thing Shepard ate before the final reaper showdown?
Jenn would try to have something nutritious so she can be at her utmost game but like she’d totally want a basket of fries and a milkshake
24. Who does Shepard turn to for advice? For comfort? Who do they like to gossip with?
She turns to Anderson for advice and sometimes Wrex bc he can be unconventional in his wisdom but it usually helps. (even if it just gets her to laugh)
Garrus and Tali for comfort
She gossips with Kasumi, Tali, and Joker but mainly leaves them to it most of the time.
25. How emotionally articulate is your Shepard? Do they emote well?
Shepard plays her emotions close to her, not really revealing how she truly feels most of the time. This not only lets her show what she wants but lets her process the emotions more so she can deal with them. She tries to be articulate what she’s feeling to people, sometimes it doesn’t work.
She doesn’t want people using her emotions against her.
26. Does your Shepard have a romance? Who are they, and what drew Shep to them?
Garrus! Our love-able turian. I feel like she somewhat started to like him in 1 and didn’t really realize it.
 Her dying has her world view tipped on its head and she really starts to lean on Garrus as a confidant and someone she can trust to be at her back. Garrus never disappoints.
 She was drawn to him bc he does want to make the galaxy better he’s just extreme about it. He cares and his ruthless streak matches hers.
27. Do they have any pet peeves?
She can’t handle people who don’t clear the microwave after they use it. Like if someone takes something out before the timer so like :10 seconds is left on it and they just leave it there. Drives her bonkers.
28. What about hyperfixations? What’s the topic that will get Shepard rolling no matter the person or place?
Model ships. The drama in the community, the mistakes in how some models are made and that’s not how it is at all, what blueprint were they looking at? What models got discontinued and her opinions on how people should decal their models (Jenn doesn’t care if someone painted a ship hot pink they had fun and they paid for the model, leave them alone)
29. How active is Shepard? Are they hitting the gym, playing sports, or do they prefer quieter downtime?
They work out bc they need to but they do enjoy running. It’s a good way for them to quiet their mind.
She does prefer a quieter downtime, mainly her ships, reading, a listening to music.
Her and Joker like to have movie nights where she’s forced to make popcorn bc apparently hers is the best.
30. What will always make them laugh?
Puns, good or bad
31. Who can always make them laugh?
Garrus. His sense of humor will always cheer her up.
32. What do they do when they have hit their limit angry, just incandescent with rage?
She finds a punching bag and just lays in on it. She can’t punch the people she’s upset with so she punches it instead. It lets her get her rage out so she can think properly about the problem and wears her out.
33. What skills do they have that are a surprise to the people around them?
I feel like Shepard would be into calisthenics and people just watch her in awe
Calisthenics is a type of workout that uses a person’s body weight with little to no equipment. The exercises involve movements that use large muscle groups, such as pushups. People typically perform these exercises at a moderate pace. They help to improve coordination, flexibility, and strength.
Look up videos of this its insane
34. Got any tattoos?
 …yes. But idk what of!
Maybe after one of her first tours her squad go out and get matching tattoos idk
35. Which companions have they lost? How do they cope with it?
Jenn has lost the ‘canon’ deaths- Ashley, Mordin, Thane, and Legion. She knows her mission requires sacrifice with the last three, Ashley proved that, and they accepted that this was going to happen. She tries to make peace with that even if she feels rage at the fact that they shouldn’t have died, that she should have been better. She tries not to let the maybes control her but they get in her brain anyways. Ashley was a cold shock, it made her feel like a failure, and it made her that much angrier when dealing with Saren.
36. Do they like to style their hair, wear makeup and jewelry? How do they feel about getting dressed up?
Shepard likes getting dressed for going out, but doesn’t like most dresses. Kasumi’s little number is the closest she’ll ever get to a dress she likes.
Shepard’s hair is short so there’s not much to do besides like curling. But she rarely does that.
Jenn does like jewelry but not makeup.
37. Got any bad habits?
Picks at her nails when she’s anxious or nervous. Wearing gloves help so she doesn’t do it as much when she’s in armor
38. Does Shepard do any activities with the companions and crew during downtime?
She does movie nights with Joker, and they do their paperwork together but that’s not downtime.
Kasumi likes doing her nails and she works out with Jacob
She likes card games and so does the crew
39. Do they keep around any sentimental items?
Okay this one made me sad, thanks for that. Any of the stuff you can pick up in game, Jenn gets. But one of the younger gang members had made her a friendship bracelet that Jenn wore everywhere. Sadly, she didn’t see it after the Collector attack.
40. Does your Shepard actually like to collect model ships? If not, what do they display?
She does!! She originally started it as something to do during leave bc at first she didn’t make a lot of friends. So she started building ships that she served on.
41. How is Shepard with a gun? What about hand to hand?
Fan-fucking-tastic. She versatile in all weapon types but prefers an assault rifle or a sniper. She fights tanky so sometimes she uses a shotgun when she gets up close and personal.
ME1 and explosive rounds were beautiful.
Hand to hand she’s good with and I feel like she would try to teach some of the crew who weren’t so well versed in it.
It’s very interesting when Garrus and Shepard go at it.
42. Favorite weapon?
M-27 Lancer hands down. Good aim and magazine and she can handle the recoil. She doesn’t like the new thermal clips so finding that weapon was a godsend.
43. Which version of the Normandy do they like best?
There will always be a special place in her heart for the SR-1 but she likes the 2 better because it’s bigger and has more room for the people she cares about. It’s been through a lot with her so
44. Do they like to rotate out your companions for quests? Who do they bring the most?
She does rotate people out based on what she expects to be there and so no one gets too antsy without something to kill.
She brings Garrus, Wrex, and Javik out the most.
45. Do they approve of curing the genophage?
Yes. She doesn’t think letting the Krogan die off is a good thing, no species should just be killed.
46. Does Shepard allow the rachni to live in me1?
Yep! Like I said above, she doesn’t like the thought of killing an entire species.
47. Does Shepard practice any kind of self-care?
Cosmetics wise? Like oils, face masks, lotion and all that? No. She just uses a simple face soap bc the Alliance standard three-in-one sucks. I feel like when Kasumi learns about this she’s appalled. Jenn tries to defend herself and makes the mistake saying it’s expensive. And Kasumi is like- I steal my shit, I’ll steal yours too. After the last stop at the Citadel, there’s a little gift basket in her quarters. Jenn tries some of it, doesn’t keep some. She’s not big on it.
More on the mental health side? When she stretches/does yoga for her exercise routine she tries to process everything that’s going on in her life.
48. What abilities do they rely on the most in a fight?
Throw/Warp combo for the explosion and overload/neural shock. Great for when she’s in a pinch. Bullets work too.
49. What is Shepard’s happy ending? What’s the dream that keeps 'em going?
Her dream is that she’ll get to stay with Garrus and be all domestic and shit. She’ll meet up with her crew regularly and everyone is fucking happy Damnit. She’ll collect more models, and Garrus and her will have their little sniper competitions that end with make outs.
50. Is your Shepard indoctrinated?
Nah
But like I think she gets headaches from all the beacons and visions she gets and she worries sometimes. But Garrus says nothing is wrong with her.
And now I’m thinking that she goes to Kaidan and if she ever turns, she makes him promise to kill her before she does anything. I feel like he would. (This is not a slight against Kaidan)
(+1: what does Shepard smell like?)
Hi! So first, I love love love your tags on the Anarky panels I posted because you're absolutely right, the direction of the 99 comic was... A Choice tm. But second of all, I wanted to ask, because I was curious as to your thoughts on the initiatory violence thing: do you think Lonnie might consider the oppression/oppressive systems that he fights to be first blow, and so in punishing them, he is instead reacting? I just thought that could be a character motivation that might explain that line! No worries if you disagree; I'm just curious to hear what you think! Full respect to you and your blog, and I'm so glad someone else out there loves Lonnie! :D
first of all, i really, really appreciate it! anarky fans are very few and far between, and i get really excited when i find people talking and posting about him. he’s one of my top favorite DC characters and i only have one or two friends who share that sentiment, so i feel much the same way :)
you know, as someone who’s read a lot of anarky comics (including ones i really, really hate) and has put a sizable amount of thought towards him and his characterization, that never really crossed my mind when i considered why that line was put in despite past instances of lonnie initiating violence towards others (i mentioned johnny vomit, but there’s also him poisoning Bates, him shocking Pantalone in Robin 1993 Annual, him electrocuting a man to near-death in Green Arrow, etc. i ignore everything penned by tim seeley, because red hood vs anarky and robins was a messy mistake of a character assassination TO ME) it’s a really interesting thought and im glad you brought it up! that particular motivation seems like it could track for him really well and is something that can be found in actual anarchist schools of thought, so i definitely don’t disagree! most of those people were participating in the systems he targets, though i do think he does tend to get too into what he does sometimes and isnt always the best at being an anarchist. side effect of being an angry bleeding heart kid, but his heart IS in the right place.
i’ll be honest with you though - after my first couple reads of the 1999 solo and the 1997/8 miniseries, i tend to skim when i reread. it left a sour taste in my mouth because it’s when alan grant went full Randian Neo-Tech and decided to pivot lonnie in that direction, and the ways in which the character changes from a smart and cocky yet theatrical and emotion-driven little punk with ancom-adjacent views into an “I Read Atlas Shrugged Once” Rational faux-Intellectual make me a bit sad, so i think i have the habit of sweeping everything that i havent picked out for my analysis of the character aside (i’m especially interested in just how damn lonely and self-isolated he is… PLEASE get some friends!). i do acknowledge this is probably a result of him growing up, but i wish his views would’ve strengthened instead of getting… weird. what I do find noteworthy about this is that some of my favorite parts of him aren’t completely changed. he’s still very expressive and emotive and full of compassion for people, has a dry wit, and his moral compass remains pretty intact. he’s still a bit of a weirdo teenager. with everything that grant DID try to do with him however, i always chalked up inconsistencies to his constant upping of the ante (in part to editorial mandates, so the bizarre stuff isn’t entirely his fault. to a point he was doing his best with what was given him, but.) and the fact that grant himself stated that lonnies “evolving philosophy” was reflective of his own. lmao
sorry if this makes no sense and devolved into a rant or something, im out right now and got really eager when i saw this so i was like i have GOT to say something ASAP. here, have a him as thanks for reading ⬇️
forget on the page murders, how many people have the Bats killed implicitly, during their backstories?
Alfred: a whole bunch, during wartime, and then acting as a thug for the UK government afterwards
Jake: tons. soldier, then a super secret deadly government program filled with assassins??? lots
Lucius: given some of the ethically dubious stuff tech inventors have done in the past, and how okay he is with Batman, probably at least a few while experimenting (volunteers, accidental)
Bruce: depending on how canon you consider LoA, probably a lot while training with them, even though he tried not to. in his alternate/additional trip around the world, maybe several, depending on what his teachers asked him to do
Kate: probably none. a socialite and only training to be a soldier, unless she had a sport shooting or hunting accident, or one of her friends OD'd and it was her responsibility somehow, she's unlikely to have killed anyone
Khoa: tons
Renee: probably a lot. as an active supporter of police brutality with the means to do it, and someone who's often intentionally gone off book so no one can see her do it, definitely nonzero
Dick: almost certainly no one. like. when would he even have had an opportunity to
Babs: probably no one, but given the state of Gotham, it would be perfectly within the narrative logic that she killed one or more home intruders attempting to murder her dad. depending on what training you give her before she joins up, she may well have accidentally killed several people training in an underground fight club
Luke: possibly one person during a match, since professional level martial arts do sometimes kill people in the ring. if it was during training, possibly even two. more than that and there would be all kinds of conspiracies about him and people wouldn't leave him alone so we can conclude that's the maximum. he could've run people over tho and we know his dad would cover that up he just seems like a really safe driver so I think it's unlikely
Jace: tbh I think to make his story make sense it had to be a pretty regular occurrence that he did hit and runs. probably a lot of either ODs or people aspirating their own vomit too, which you can assign variable responsibility for
Tam: given her number of backstories she could be a supervillain secretly and we would never know so honestly I think you could give her any kill count you want
Jason: if we go off his newest backstory, then probably a few dealers or creeps who were hanging around his building. in any of the newer versions it's likely he fought back against at least some adults while homeless, and we know he doesn't shy from defending himself, so easily a few. none in the circus backstory
Tim: so while he's definitely in a space where his parents would've covered up any of his friends/classmates he accidentally drowned or what have you, I do think he'd bring it up constantly, so I think that's very unlikely. but he could've watched it happen
Steph: I also just don't think she'd have any opportunity
Cass: her dad very clearly didn't care whether his goons lived or died. the only thing we know is that none of them died in front of her, but many of them could've died later, of injuries she inflicted. it's also possible she killed them during her training but went unconscious first and just never woke up, so she didn't see. this number could be pretty high, but there are only about three years during which it could take place, so not that high
Tiff: she seems like she would kill people, if given the right motive and opportunity, but she'd need a really good impetus, and she'd have to commit. so maybe one, but only if there were a predator hanging around her school or something. or one of her friends' parents was abusive and she could make it look like an accident or have Lucius make it get recorded as an accident. more likely she's thought about it but never been in that situation
Damian: definitely at least some, enough that he was inured to it by the time he joined Bruce, but also probably not that many given that he wasn't allowed out of the compound that often and he certainly wasn't going to be killing many of his teachers. we know he killed Mara a few times but they probably wouldn't waste The Juice on people lower down the food chain, so he would interpret a distinction between killing (temp) and killing (final final.jpg)
Maps: I think?? no one???
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Ghost-Maker x Batsis One-Shot
Word Count: 1.2K Warnings: Explicit Language, Mature Themes
Author's Note: Based on this ask right here! Enjoy! -Thorne
**********************************************************************
Being the only non-vigilante in the family besides Alfred meant that she was the one who was normal. Or abnormal in her family’s case—but hey, they still loved their abnormal sister. She was the one who was able to provide rationality from a civilian perspective, another look from a different lens. She was softer too. Much softer than most of her family, quiet, reserved, kind. She didn’t like fighting. Didn’t like arguing and screaming until throats were raw.
Her nights weren’t usually spent outside fighting crime, though she did help out in the cave from time to time, readying equipment, providing food and drinks for before and after patrol routes. Most nights, she was at her apartment or still working. She liked not being a vigilante. Liked being able to go out with her friends at night and not be burdened by last minute bailouts because Two-Face decided to rob a bank or Penguin started a gang war with Joker.
All that being said, she did know her father’s enemies and friends. Being the first child in the manor and with less than two decades between her and him, his enemies and friends were well-known categories to her. Bruce’s oldest friend during his travels, Ghost-Maker, had also been someone she’d known—at least by story. She’d never met him until the night he showed up and challenged her father. Then he became a member of their family, though she could tell the others were wary—she didn’t blame them, but if she didn’t extend the olive branch, she knew they weren’t going to reach out.
They got along well, in her opinion. She liked to be around him and often felt like Ghost-Maker relaxed around her, even to the point that he spoke of his travels. It was no surprise to either of them when they started a romantic relationship. And while he wasn’t particularly monogamous, he seemed satisfied with her for the time being.
***
It was far, few, and in between when they were all in the cave at once, and not dressed in gear about to go out, but instead to hang around and train. She smiled as Cass and Duke wiped the floor with Jason and Dick. Tim and Damian were butting heads about a video game and Steph was leaning over the back of Barbara’s wheelchair, offering insight to some new update the tech genius was creating. Bruce and Ghost-Maker were leaning against the table, quietly murmuring back and forth to each other—in Latin, she had to note, figuring it was because she was in the middle of them, and they didn’t want her to know; she wasn’t upset.
“Jason, Cass, no hits below the belt,” she called out. “You both know better that.”
Cass nodded, readying her position again, but Jason stopped, propping his hands on his hips as he griped, “Okay, but in real life, people hit below the belt, (Y/N).”
She tutted at him. “Jason, you have to be the bigger person.” Raising a fist, she grinned, “Punch ‘em in the face.”
“I can do that!” he chirped.
“I didn’t mean punch Ca—oh, who am I kidding, he won’t be able to hit her,” she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest in preparation for the all-out ass-kicking her second younger brother was going to get; she looked over at Bruce. “Wanna bet on them?”
He chuckled. “Ten on Cass.”
“But I was choosing Cass!” she pouted, then pursed her lips. “Fine. I’ll up it to twenty on Jason.”
“Do you two bet on your family often?” Ghost-Maker asked, and she looked over.
“When it’s a high-stakes match.” (Y/N) nodded at the two siblings circling one another, Duke and Dick had moved off the mats. “Jason and Cass are two of the best fighters alive. Each are capable of going hand to hand with Bruce and lasting for a quite a while.” She looked back at him. “When they really hit their primes, they’ll be better than you and dad.”
He snorted. “There are few people who are better than me and Bruce.”
(Y/N) propped a hand on her hip. “This coming from the man who gets his ass kicked every time you and my dad fight?”
“This coming from the woman who can’t fight at all?” he shot back, and her cheeks warmed, jaw snapping closed at the retort.
“I chose not to fight because I don’t believe in violence.”
“You literally just told him to punch someone in the face.”
“Just because I don’t believe in hitting people doesn’t mean I can’t tell someone. It’s just speech. Words.”
“I think you’re making excuses,” he smirked.
(Y/N) glared. “I think you’re being a jerk.”
“Nice comeback. Did you get it from a laffy taffy wrapper?”
Even Bruce snorted at that one and she couldn’t help but shift her weight between her feet as embarrassment flooded her body. “You are such a nasty person. Rude and nasty and mean.”
Ghost-Maker cocked a brow, at least she thought he did. “Aw, are you upset that I’m faster at firing off than you are?”
She scoffed. “Thanks for reminding me why we stopped screwing. Maybe the next time we do, you’ll fire second?” This time, his jaw went slack, and he gaped at her, but she was quick to add, “And for the record, being rude and condescending doesn’t make you look cool. It just makes you look like an asshole. But you’d know a lot about that, huh?”
“I think I know much more than you do, Primadonna.”
(Y/N)’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t call me that.”
“Oh? So, what do you want me to call you? Miss Snobby?”
She turned to face him. “I’m warning you.”
“I’ve got it! Miss Prude!”
THWAP!
She’d let her fist fly before she even knew what she was doing and not even Ghost-Maker was able to react fast. He reached up, grabbing his nose as blood spilled out his nostrils, staining the rim of the cloth mask he wore. The noise in the cave stilled as everyone turned to face their eldest sister, all gaping, though Jason and Cass wore proud looks. Even Bruce had no idea how to react.
(Y/N), with hot cheeks, thrust a finger in his face and griped, “Newsflash, Ghost-Maker. The Wayne Family motto is ‘talk shit, get hit’.” She sped off towards the stairs, half out of embarrassment, the other half of giddy adrenaline. “I’m going home! Goodnight!”
Ghost-Maker merely watched her back as she left, blinking in stunned silence; Bruce snickered. “My daughter isn’t a vigilante, K. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t train her to defend herself.”
He shot his friend a glare and wiped his nose, feeling the sting, starting to walk off. “Go shove it.”
“And just where are you going?”
“You heard her,” he grinned. “The next time we screwed I had to fire second. Besides, someone’s gotta drive her home.”
Bruce was already starting after him. “That is my daughter you’re talking about! Get back here damnit! I will not let you taint her!”
“She’s already been tainted by me, old friend. Many times.”
“I DON’T NEED TO KNOW THAT, K! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!”
You skid to a stop on your motorcycle, leaving tire tracks behind you in the batcave. You could clean that later when you weren’t bleeding out. You stumbled off of the vehicle, your hand still clutching on to the bloodied towel that kept your uniform from getting dirty and took your helmet off. You had a rather dirty run in with a few lowtime criminals who some how got their hands on alien tech, how that happened you’d have to ask Star Labs later, but either way despite your many encounters with villains who were much worse, the sudden blast from a laser shocked you just enough for them to get at least a cut in. Regardless you took care of them quickly and took the weapons back, which were now pathetically hanging off the side of your motorcycle.
You rolled your shoulders back and began you ascent up the stairs to get back into the manor, it would be best if you cleaned this up as soon as you could because god were you tired. You opened the door quietly.
“Please may no one be home,” you said to yourself repeatedly. Your brothers had a knack for getting rather loud when you came back with cuts and bruises, but you couldn’t blame them with all of their unresolved trauma and the fact that you, miraculously, happen to be the one Bat that hasn’t either died and came back or gotten beaten nearly to death, which you constantly held over them because damn in this business that’s more than just an achievement.
You successfully made it to the bathroom and pulled out the small medical kit and started working on the shallow wound, and right as you finished the shower curtain pulled back.
“Ahh!” You jumped back.
“Ahh!” Tim got into a defensive stance.
“What the hell are you doing in the shower?!"
"What the hell are you doing without a shirt?"
"I asked first!"
"You don't just sit in the shower to think?" You do, but you lock the door when you decide to do that. "Oh my god, did you get injured?!"
"No," you grabbed your shirt and hid the bandages that wrapped around your torso. You both stared at each other for a moment before Tim darted out of the bathroom. "Don't you fucking dare tell anyone, Drake!" You followed him out and ran into the worst possible person.
"Whoa, careful there, (Y/N), when did you get home?" Dick asks. Then he notices your bandages. "What happened? Who did you fight? Why didn't you call for backup? Where were you?"
"Oh my god, I'm fine, Dick," you walked past him and he caught up with you.
"Fine? Fine? You didn't even wrap that right, (Y/N)," Dick begins his lecture and you begin to tune him out right as you walked into your room and shut the door. Dick, knowing his boundaries, stood outside still lecturing you, and you walked out with a new shirt on and continued to ignore him while he shot you rapid fire questions. "At least answer my first questions, (Y/N)." You sighed, and without turning to him, said,
"Got grazed with a knife. Ran into some burglars that for some reason had alien tech. Didn't need it. Downtown," you answered his questions in succession while entering the kitchen, waving to Jason, who was getting a snack, and Tim, who was probably telling Jason about your predicament.
"Alien tech? And they didn't use it?" Tim asks.
"Exactly, they probably didn't know how to. But it doesn't matter, because I am very clearly fine," you reached past Jason into the refrigerator and pulled out a fruit cup.
"You're bleeding through your shirt," Jason points out. You look down and he was right. You let out another loud sigh and tear off a few paper towels from the sink and placed them under your shirt. "At least dress it right or you'll die from bleeding out rather than actually getting stabbed."
"Well, to be fair, if Tim didn't spontaneously pop out of the shower maybe I would have," you complained.
"You didn't lock the door?" Jason turns to him.
"There are ten bathrooms in this mansion, I didn't think anyone would go in!" Tim defends. "But that's besides the point! (Y/N), I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation. If they had alien tech then that knife could have been laced with something."
"Are you implying that I could have alien eggs in me?"
"Why's everyone screaming?" The youngest Wayne entered the kitchen. "I can hear you all from my room."
"Tim thinks (Y/N) got eggs implanted in her," Dick says quickly.
"No, no I don't. Besides, that's not how alien fertilization works."
"You know how alien fertilization works?" You couldn't help the contorted face you made at the thought of how he knew.
"You always do this when we call you out, (Y/N), the point is you could very likely have some kind of alien virus or bacteria inside of you that could quite possibly kill you!"
"Tim, I'm pretty sure it was a normal knife," you walked over to the pantry and took out a bag of potato chips.
"But, if what Grayson just told me was right," Damien cuts in. "How stupid could you be? Letting something as simple as a knife get to you?" He mocks.
"If you weren't a kid I would've punted you by now," you pointed at him with a potato chip and ate it. "Do I have to remind you about last week?"
"No," he scoffs. "But that's not the point. You're trained well enough to avoid bullets and you let a knife get close to you? How out of it were you?"
"I will admit that the alien guns that also shot Bruce did distract me a little."
"And you let them go free?!" Jason finally grasped the gravity of the situation. "What if they come back to find you because they're pissed?"
"Relax, I have them in the batcave," you waved him off.
"You could've been killed," Jason argues.
"Oh stop being so dramatic, Todd, I'm obviously standing here right now, aren't I?"
"One shot from any of those and you could've either been disintegrated or catapulted into another dimension," Tim adds.
"Or worse, completely debilitated and decommissioned," Dick continues.
"You could be dying right now and you wouldn't know it because of how dense you are, (L/N)," Damien was next. You continued eating your chips while they started to talk over each other, then you finally spoke up.
"Okay, I get it, I'll be more careful from now on," you spoke in a steady voice. "Now, I'm gonna go clean this up because I was so rudely interrupted by someone, and when I come back, this discussion will be over," you held your hand up to silence Jason, who was about to retaliate. Then you walked over to the kitchen door and pulled it off of its hinges.
You stood there for a good few seconds, staring at the door in your hands, and the ruined door frame. Then you looked back at the other boys, who essentially all had their jaws on the ground.
"Could she do that before?" Jason asked Dick.
"No..." the other shook his head.
"Alfred's going to kill me..." you laid the door against the wall. You reached for the water bottle on the side of the table and opened it, intending to chug the whole thing down to calm your nerves, but none of the water came out, instead the whole thing was iced over. "Uh..."
The kitchen was silent. You ran back to the bathroom and took your shirt off then the bandages, seeing that the wound had turned blue and had completely frosted over. The other boys followed you, their heads sticking through the door.
"I was right?!" Tim's voice echoed throughout the manor and you slammed your head on the wall behind you.
A WEEK LATER...
Of course it had to be raining the night they needed to execute their plan.
Y/N didn’t know if she was shaking because she was freezing or because she was so nervous. Even with all the layers and her knit hat, she couldn’t seem to warm up.
Y/N had been walking around for half an hour. They’d mapped out her route so her face would get picked up by as many street cameras as possible. If The Court was as sinister as rumored, they’d be watching.
“Scratch your nose if you’re doing alright,” Dick said in Y/N’s ear.
The whole family had explained how imperative it was for Y/N not to speak. They had to assume that Y/N was being watched the moment she left the manor. And if her lips moved, the Talons would know something was up.
So Y/N scratched her nose and looked over her shoulder suspiciously, just like they had talked about.
“Remember: you want out at any moment, just press the distress button on your watch,” Dick added for good measure.
Y/N wanted to roll her eyes at his worry and overprotectiveness, and say, ‘I know. I know.’ But she knew better than that.
“Someone’s tracking her,” Jason spoke up in the comms. “Civilian clothing.”
Jason started calling out the identifiers to his family, and in 30 seconds everyone spotted the man that was tailing Y/N.
But this was all part of the plan.
“I still don’t like this,” Dick muttered to his family, making sure he cut Y/N’s connection off so she didn’t hear his nervousness.
“’Course you are. We’re throwing your girlfriend to the wolves,” Jason commented.
“She’s not my girlfriend,” Dick muttered with annoyance.
“Focus,” Bruce chimed in for the first time.
“She’s stuck to the route we gave her,” Tim commented. “All well-lit and crowded with people. They won’t make a scene with this many witnesses.”
The family moved across rooftops, following Y/N’s path from their designated points.
Dick and Bruce both hated this plan, but they were handling it in different ways.
Bruce had become almost mute with focus. He didn’t want a single thing to slip past him. His senses were acute as ever. He was barely communicating with them because he was too busy keeping an eye on Y/N. His eyes hadn’t stopping shooting around, making sure to cover all angles.
“She’s entering the warehouse,” Damian announced.
Everyone shifted their focus and made their moves.
Y/N stopped at the computers she had set up. Or really that Bruce had hired men to set up for her.
She started typing away rapidly, not sure how much time she’d have before deadly ninjas would start dropping on her.
With one final slam of a key, she let out a shallow breath. “Signal’s been sent out. We’re live.”
“Nice!” Tim answered.
Jason started to chime in, but suddenly his voice became crackly and then the line went silent.
“Red Hood?” Y/N asked.
Nothing.
“Anyone read?”
Nothing.
Y/N felt a chill go up her spine.
She whipped around to find three Talons awaiting her attention.
Y/N quickly took a step back and pressed the panic button on her watch. She hoped The Court hadn’t somehow intercepted that signal as well.
“You were lucky with our last encounter,” a Talon stepped forward to speak.
Y/N ignored him and took out both of the guns that had been hiding in her trench coat.
He laughed at the weapons. “Have we not already tried this?”
“At least I’m not a coward hiding behind a mask. Won’t even let me see the faces of the idiots who want to kill me?”
They all ignored her attempt to get them to unmask themselves, but started stepping toward her. “Not want. We will kill you this time.”
But before Y/N could answer or the Talons could get any closer, a smoke bomb was dropped in the space between her and her enemy.
Just as it erupted, Dick dropped down from the bannister above and shoved a gas mask over Y/N’s face.
This wasn’t just any usual gas bomb that Batman and the family used as a distraction. No, this was a special formula designed to burn eyes and cause coughing fits.
One thing was made quite clear, the Talon’s masks were not used to protect them from such attacks. They were meant to hide their identity and nothing else.
Y/N smirked when she heard the sudden coughing and groans of pain. They weren’t muffled by fabric, meaning they had no choice but to remove their masks.
“Stay back,” Dick warned her before lightly pushing her behind a pillar as the smoke bomb started to settle.
Barely giving them a chance, Dick attacked the weakened Talons.
But now the three of them were unmasked. Their eyes were burned red and watery with tears.
And their faces were exposed.
Y/N’s stomach dropped as she saw Dick flip to them and attack.
But she had a job to do and started tapping away on the high-tech watch around her wrist. She was walking backwards, staying away from the fight, just as Dick had instructed.
But then she backed into a body.
“Fuck,” Y/N muttered as she froze and her eyes widened in panic.
She whipped around to find a Talon with his sword drawn.
Then other blurs were dropping down from the banisters, more were joining the fight.
Y/N reached for both of her guns and was ready to start firing – despite that not benefiting her in the slightest bit last time.
But before she could take even one shot, someone dropped in front of her protectively.
Bruce was a like a wall of shadow, blocking Y/N from the enemy.
“Run, Y/N.” He demanded without breaking eye contact with his opponent.
She knew better than to fight him on it. This was what they had agreed upon: Y/N was to be used as bait and do her job, then get the hell out.
“No matter what you hear or see, you run like hell,” Dick had told her. His eyes had been desperate and his grip on her shoulders had been tight. Y/N hadn’t been able to find it in her to do anything but give a slow nod.
Barely a second passed after Bruce’s warning before multiple Talons were on him. But Bruce was a worthy opponent and was able to distract them enough for Y/N to get away.
She ran for the nearest exit.
But the warehouse was now crawling with Talons.
Two more blocked her path, making her screech to a stop and turn around, facing Jason.
“Get down,” he told her calmly as he raised two guns.
She dove to the ground and covered her ears as Jason cleared out his ammo.
Without waiting for further instruct, Y/N jumped back onto her feet and tried to find the least chaotic route out.
Tim was using his bow staff almost like a windmill, taking out multiple Talons at a time with just a simple swing.
Y/N looked across the warehouse to see Damian and Dick fighting alongside each other. Despite Damian’s capabilities, Dick couldn’t help but look out for the boy, and he was never far from his side during a fight.
Damian slashed down opponent after opponent with his Katana sword. Meanwhile, Dick had the boy’s back, using his escrima sticks and countless acrobatic kicks and flips.
They were all holding their own, which further urged Y/N to get out of the way.
‘Run, Y/N. Run!’ Her brain screamed at her.
She spotted her opening and sprinted for it.
With only a few yards to go, Y/N felt a sting in the back of her leg.
No.
It was more than a sting. It was a lightning strike of pain that threw her to the floor.
As she sat up, Y/N looked up to see that a knife had clattered to the floor with blood staining it. Her blood.
Then she looked at the back of her thigh to see that she was bleeding from an open wound. It could’ve been worse. The knife could’ve embedded into her muscle and flesh. But she had gotten away with a graze – but one that brought her to the ground.
It all happened so quickly.
One moment Y/N was looking at the blood dripping from her leg. And the next, there was a Talon standing above her – unmasked – with his sword about to swing down on her.
Y/N winced and shielded herself as best as she could. But there was no saving her from such a blade – and a blade wielded by a Talon of The Court.
Just when Y/N thought she’d feel the sword strike her, a presence flew between them.
Y/N opened her eyes when she heard the sound of metal clashing with metal.
Bruce’s forearms were crossed into an X, with his gauntlets intercepting the Talon’s sword swing.
Y/N crawled back to get out of the way, ignoring the screaming pain from her leg.
All she could do was watch as Bruce now fought the Talon one on one. They wielded two katana swords – one in each hand.
Meanwhile, Bruce was using his gauntlets and therefore could really only be on the defense.
It was clear that he was trying to disarm them and make the fight even.
Eventually, through many complicated maneuvers, Bruce knocked one of the swords out of the Talon’s grip. He picked it up.
Y/N didn’t know why it was so surprising to see Bruce wield a katana. Of course he had been trained in sword fighting. That just wasn’t his chosen weapon. It didn’t stop her from being amazed by his skill with the blade.
But Bruce was getting tired. Y/N could see it.
His movements were still quick, but they had slowed since the beginning of this particular fight.
Y/N managed to clench her teeth and fight through the pain of her leg, slowly bringing herself to a standing position.
But just as she did so, Bruce’s sword was knocked clear out of his hands and the Talon followed it with a kick to Bruce’s abdomen and a punch to his face.
Y/N’s stomach dropped at seeing the infamous Batman get knocked to the ground.
Of all the footage she’d seen, Batman always seemed to have the upper hand. She never doubted that he was going to win a fight – and he was going to do so without killing the enemy, which as always impressive.
“Get up, get up,” Y/N hissed to herself as she watched Bruce struggle to get back on his feet.
“So much time spent protecting her,” the Talon patronized. “Such a waste.”
He landed yet another punch across Bruce’s face. A punch that was harder than anything Y/N had seen before.
And it knocked Bruce out cold.
Y/N felt it – the death in the air.
Time seemed to slow.
She was about to watch Batman get slaughtered right in front of her.
Her eyes raced around her, looking for one of the boys to call for help or anything that could be used as a distraction. But Dick and Damian were suddenly being overpowered. Tim wasn’t even in Y/N’s eyesight. And Jason was failing to shoot every Talon that surrounded him.
Then Y/N saw the katana that had been ripped from Bruce’s grip. It lay just a foot away from her.
Without thinking, Y/N picked it up.
She lunged forward just as the Talon was bringing his sword down to finish Bruce.
With just an inch away from his victim, Y/N’s sword intercepted the final attack.
The Talon gaze whipped to her. And Bruce was oblivious to his life being saved.
Y/N’s eyes widened, realizing she acted without any sort of plan. And now she had the Talon’s full attention and she had no clue how to wield a sword of any kind – or how to physically offend herself to any degree.
“You have been a nuisance long enough,” the Talon growled.
“Oh, but I’m not even done yet,” Y/N smirked wickedly.
He tilted his head to the side, choosing to amuse her instead of strike her down immediately.
“You really think I can hack the oldest and most powerful secret, but not every major news network in the country?” She asked offensively.
But then she smiled and tapped a button on her watch.
The screens in the warehouse flickered to life and their volume was turned all the way up.
Everyone ceased their fighting.
Each screen showed that every network was hacked, their signals interrupted with Y/N’s own broadcast.
It was live footage from inside the top secret base for The Court of Owls. All of its members were unmasked, either being gathered by FBI and Gotham PD or pinned to the floor, getting handcuffed.
“That’s not possible,” the Talon gasped.
Y/N tapped her watch and a tiny drone, almost the size of a bumblebee zoomed in front of his face. Then his face was being broadcasted across the world.
“Say hello to America, Calvin Rose,” Y/N announced as her face-recognition system instantly identified him and his name appeared on her watch.
Then the camera moved to another unmasked Talon in the warehouse. “William Cobb,” Y/N announced, adding his name to the screen when he appeared.
As her footage was live-streaming on all major networks, the names of each member were appearing on the screen as well.
Calvin Rose screamed in frustration.
“Detonate the bomb!” He yelled to his men.
“You mean the bomb you first threatened me with?” Y/N cooed.
He whipped back around to glare at her, not understanding her meaning.
“You really think we wouldn’t be able to find it? After you gave us weeks to track it down?” She teased. “The bomb is in the possession of the FBI, safely neutralized. But not before I helped them reverse trace a signal back to the detonator.”
They knew they lost. But they had not only lost, they had been discovered.
There would be no recovering from such exposure.
And Y/N hadn’t even told them about all the evidence she had stored that tied The Court of Owls to every corrupt act they had performed in the last 20 years.
Sirens suddenly blared in the distance.
All the boys had stopped to look at Y/N, realizing that their plan was coming together.
“You lost,” Y/N declared as she lowered the sword to her side. “And they’re coming for you, too.”
That was finally what set him off.
He growled before stomping to her.
Y/N was surprised by this new attack and quickly stepped backwards, but not nearly fast enough.
In one motion, he grabbed Y/N by the neck with one hand, lifting her off the ground with his sheer strength and rage.
Not a second later, he shoved his sword into her abdomen.
It seemed like the sound of metal cutting flesh and muscle echoed through the entire warehouse.
“No!” Dick screamed shoving his way across the warehouse to get to her.
In the same moment, Y/N was dropped to the ground like a rag doll.
Chaos had erupted around her, a new fight had begun. But she heard none of it.
Her hands warmed from the blood that was leaking from her abdomen.
The pain was something different to her.
She couldn’t even put a number on how many times her father beat her to a pulp. Nothing could ever compare to the pain of being physically hurt by the person who was supposed to love you the most in the world. This was nothing.
Y/N was just happy she’d die doing something good for the world. A final act of sorts.
Just as she was about to succumb to the tired and dark feeling threatening to envelop her, she felt a warm presence next to her.
“Y/N!” Dick yelled when he reached her side. “You’re OK.” His voice started to shake. “You’re gonna be OK. Y/N, I need you to hold on.”
Police and FBI agents flooded the warehouse as Dick pulled Y/N into his arms.
Y/N looked up to see tears had filled his eyes.
“It’s OK, Dick.” She tried to tell him. “I’ll be fine. I’m fine.”
But when she reached up to cup his cheek, she stained his skin with her own blood.
Y/N was starting to lose her grip on life.
She swore she could feel Jason and Damian’s presence move her side, and then hear Tim talking to the cops. But she could also be imagining it. She could be imagining it all. Maybe she had already died and this was just how she had wanted to go, her mind giving her that final wish.
Things went from being so loud and warm to cold and silent.
How’s Future State Dick different than current Dick? I didn’t read Future State
Future State Dick is the leader of the mask resistance, so right off the bat, he's already in charge and clearly respected. He inspires the people fighting under the resistance, and they're willing to jump in the line of fire for him.
He's very perceptive and reads people's body language to understand their intentions. He's able to sneak up on the sniper that shot him, disarm him, and intimidate him all in one scene. Then when the sniper makes a comment about Bruce, Dick casually breaks the dude's femur and jumps out of sight.
He does all this shit on his own with no one in his ear because he knows what he's doing. His moves are calculated and intentional.
His guilt complex/fear of failure is there as well in the form of feeling like he let Bruce down.
When he's trying to relax in the shower, he is still perceptive of his surroundings. He's able to anticipate his attacker (Tim Fox), and he gets the upper hand on Tim by using a voice command to shock him into unconsciousness. He gets Tim tied up and then he does some computer work to do his own investigation on Tim.
Dick reveals that he knows the bullet the sniper shot him with has nanotech in it that's going to lead the magistrate to his secret hideout. So not only is Dick knowledgeable about the tech being used in the war against heroes, he intentionally crafts a plan so that the magistrate will be able to find him.
This shows that Dick is a planner and is smart about tech. Like I said, he knows what he's doing.
We see that when Dick interrogates a magistrate soldier. He asks him some questions that Tim thinks are unnecessary. Dick responds with, "I have my reasons."
One thing that I love about Post-Crisis Dick is that he creates his own gadgets, modifies his vehicles, and has even built his own car from scratch. Future State Dick carries this trait. He modifies his own car and also creates his own tech. He creates nano-swarm cameras that he uses to secretly record the magistrate so he can release the damning footage to the public.
This is another moment where we see that Dick plans ahead because he says that if he had died, the footage on the nano cameras would have been automatically released to the public and that all the information on Dick's personal computer systems would have been wiped clean.
He also doesn't trust people easily. Even though Tim helps him with the magistrate, Dick doesn't fully trust him. This is indicated when Tim asks if he's part of Dick's club now, and Dick says, "You're not out. Let's start there."
To sum all of that up, Future State Dick is clearly a leader who plans ahead. He's very perceptive, meticulous, and he can be intimidating. He is highly computer savvy, and he's also great at creating his own tech. He clearly knows what he's doing and acts like the experienced vigilante he is.
Taylor's Dick has got some of these things to a degree. Dick is able to tell that someone is in his apartment so, y'know, there are some perceptive skills there. But then Dick gets his wallet stolen by a kid which brings that perception level to zero.
While he's talking to Tim, he mentions tracking the kid who stole his wallet. Tracking. Cool. But it becomes less cool when you realize it's just Babs tracking the wallet on her computer and relaying the information to Dick's earpiece about where Dick should go.
A positive thing I'll say is that Dick's good at working with teams, and we can see that by how he works with Babs and Tim in Taylor's run. Some of the leader aspect is there. Dick gives instructions to Babs and Tim. He also decides to ask for help by contacting the ships to save the kids, and I've always liked how Dick is willing to ask for people's help when it makes sense to do so.
But Dick's research and gadget skills get kicked to the curb since Babs fills those roles for him (if Dick made his own escrima sticks then I'll give him more props since his escrimas are highly functional and multi-purposeful.) She makes his new mask so she can see what he sees. She does the research on Melinda Zucco and attempts to hack her files. Her role makes it so that Dick doesn't really have to do as much of the planning on his own.
In general, Taylor's Dick lacks competence. Babs throwing him across his apartment. Getting his wallet stolen. (Conveniently getting knocked upside the head so many times that he blacks out.) Getting unmasked four issues in.
With the way Taylor is writing, he has to make Dick incompetent in order to unfold his plot. Getting his wallet stolen leads Dick to the homeless kid campsite where the fight with Heartless goes down. Getting knocked upside the head over and over gives Taylor a reason to not have Dick kick everyone's ass as well as sets Dick up to be unmasked for the Melinda sister reveal. I feel like there are ways to still hit the plot markers on the storyline map without all of that.
So yeah. Those are basically the differences I see between the two. If you ask why I prefer Future State Dick it's simple. He's badass and encapsulates the traits you would expect in someone who's Batman's equal. Also, all that stuff I mentioned about Future State Dick? All of that occurred in two issues. Two issues. Meanwhile, Taylor's had four issues so far and hasn't really delivered on the Dick Grayson he talked up.
