A Few Seconds After Jinx and Silco’s First Hug
Silco: I’ve ascended to my true form... a single father.
~*~
A Week After Their First Hug
Sevika: You do know she’s not your real, actual daughter, right?
Silco: What?! Of course, she is. We hugged!
Sevika: I’m sorry, what?
Silco: Do you think I would hug a child that wasn’t my own?
Sevika: I mean, obviously no... But-
Silco: Do you think that I just go around hugging random children that I don’t know in alleyways and then adopt them because of said hug? Is that what you think, Sevika?!
Sevika: Okay, obviously you don’t do that. But to be clear - THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID WITH JINX!
~*~
A Few Weeks After Their First Hug
Sevika: I still don’t think you understand how becoming a parent actually works.
Silco: Seriously Sevika, it’s like you weren’t even there to see our life-changing hug.
Sevika: I didn’t see it. I was knocked unconscious from her stupid bomb in my attempt to save your stupid life, you fucking asshole.
Silco: ... Are you still mad that your new arm hasn’t come in yet? I told you it’s on its way.
~*~
Jinx and Silco Hug For the First Time
Silco: I’ve become a father.
Vander’s Ghost: You haven’t become shit.
Silco: No, we hugged; pretty sure that means she’s my daughter and I’m her father now.
Vander’s Ghost: IT TAKES MORE THAN A HUG TO BECOME A FATHER!!!
Several Years Later -
Silco is killed by Jinx, but he doesn’t hate nor blame her; instead, he uses his last words to try and comfort her in the best way he can think of due to the impossible and awful situation that they’re in.
Vander’s Ghost: Fine... you were her father... whatever.
Silco’s Ghost: VINNNNNDICATION!!!
Vander’s Ghost: You’re still a fucking bastard.
I do think it actually took Silco some time to start seeing Jinx as his daughter, but also...
It’s genuinely so much funnier to think that because Silco is someone who would never hug a child, let alone care about someone like he does for Jinx, unless they were in fact his child, that means the second he hugged her - she 100% became his child and he does not understand why everyone is not understanding this.
Seriously they hugged!!! Clearly that means he and Jinx have always been father and daughter; just because they didn’t know each other beforehand and aren’t biologically related, doesn’t mean they weren’t always father and daughter.
No, but in all (some) seriousness - I feel like for anyone else it’s just a hug – it doesn’t have to mean anything at all. But for Silco, for this disaster of a man, who is so damaged, it’s a HUG.
It’s a physical act of affection and it means everything to him, because he doesn’t do that shit lightly.
Once he returned her hug, he was never going to break his promise to her; once he returned that hug, she was his child.
Bonus:
Vander: I don’t think you understand how adoption or becoming a parent works.
Silco: I don’t think you understand how it fucking works; half of your children are dead!

Silco, Vander, and Grace for the Ones Who Hurt Us the Most
Sometimes I feel like we all really need to sit with the fact that Silco was ready, willing, and wanting for Vander to return to his side after Vander tried and failed to kill him. What Vander did was a genuine life altering act of betrayal that Silco had to live with the mental, emotional, and medical consequences for years after. You can bet if Jinx hadn't shot Silco, the river toxins would've gotten him just a little later. And in spite of the ways Vander's actions ruined his life, that Vander admits to even (but doesn't apologize for), Silco rationalized it just as much for Vander as he did himself.
Silco decided that the man he loved the most nearly killed him (and in a way is still killing him) for a greater purpose, which didn't make everything okay, but it made it reasonable. And this rationalization has bled into every aspect of his life because the way Silco treats Zaun is the way he treats himself. If you're weak the people who love you and you love back will hurt you. They are right to permanently alter the trajectory of your existence to make the right calls, because as long you survive it, you will be stronger. He's made Shimmer the lifeblood of Zaun, because Silco is literally dependent on it to live as well. It works for him, so it works for Zaun.
The most warped part is, Silco was mostly right! He had violent rise in Zaun and completely changed the course of its development. Yet he managed to create a Zaun that couldn't be cowed or bullied either economically or militarily by Piltover the way it was in the past. I can't help but think how it all must twist and burn, because if Silco understood he was succeeding at the impossible, then doesn't that mean it all reinforced his logic around Vander? That this man you loved hurt you in a way that can't be taken back for the rest of your life, and he was right to do it? So that means Silco was right to change, to want to be back by Vander's side, because he was the one who needed to reinvent himself to be worthy of control, right?
No matter the success Silco reaped he had to recognize the dissonance between this logic and reality, because despite the bastard he could be, Silco would never do any of what was done to him onto Jinx. Sure Silco would simulate his traumas into life lessons and heavily sanitized rituals, but he never betrayed her or abandoned her when she became detriment to his position. Obviously Vander also never gave up on his kids either (#cinematicparallels), but we don't know if Silco was ever in a position to betray someone the way Vander did him, or if he ever wanted to prior to it. So even as Silco recognizes that Vander changed to protect the children he loves so much, he must wonder if the way Vander and he loved eachother just wasn't it enough? If the way Silco cared for Vander was reciprocal, a deep love whether romantic or platonic, then why wasn't Silco afforded a similar grace to stay by his side?
Silco had to live with all these contradictions and still chose to embrace Vander's memory. In a complete contrast to Vander, Silco didn't obscure who Vander was to Zaun politically or personally. Silco allowed a statue of Vander to stand, and went to it for comfort, he regularly talked about his life with Vander before and after the betrayal with Jinx. Meanwhile, from what the audience can see, Silco's presence was almost fully hidden from the newest generation sans the scar Silco gave him, which Vander hides with a bracer. All I can end up thinking is that must be easier for Silco to keep loving Vander like this, it's how he gives himself the grace for it.

Trying to get over my fear of being perceived on the Internet, so I’m sharing my first Arcane related fic outside AO3. This is horrifying btw.
I think Silco is so miserable in a funny way (sorry brother), so I had to write it. It’s quite short and I’m not happy with how it turned out - never happy with my own fics tbh - but hey! It’s a start! I wanna write more about these two because I love them so dearly. I rewatched Arcane with my girlfriend recently and was honestly surprised by how genuinely sad Silco is. I’m not defending him in any way of course, but it must be said that the man behaves like he is still living the day Vander betrayed him. What with Jinx saying “you’ve told me a million times” when Silco began ranting about Vander, to talking to his statue (”all we ever wanted”, eh) - it’s clear that Silco never really moved on, even if he thought so himself. I hope we’ll get to learn why Vander betrayed him in season 2; their relationship is fascinating to me and I’d be willing to sacrifice a kidney just to know more. Ah, enough ranting, I need to close Tumblr before I continue rambling about Silco. Get him out of my brain

Fascinated by this twitter thread from user springpeachleaf, which purports to be early drafts of the Arcane script. Assuming it’s real, it’s a little glimpse into a creative process involving lots of people (it sounds so much fun) and how some things shifted during it.
Notably “Benzo takes them to port, explains Silco/ Vander”.
Tumblr media
There was obviously a lot of explanation originally intended which ended up being cut (Silco was going to be shown throwing a molotov cocktail on the bridge!), to give us the delicious ambiguity of the end version. It’s a really interesting example of less being better, and showing not telling, and it being worthwhile to have more detailed backstory than you ever reveal.
(Cut for rambling, my mind is raking over old coals).
But also now I'm thinking of how hilariously awkward it would have been for Benzo to explain Vander's relationship with Silco to the kids (even non-romantic Silco). “Didn't Vander ever mention....? No I guess he wouldn't. Well, Silco was... a brother in arms, he fought shoulder to shoulder with your parents..."
Vi leans forward, face screwed up in confusion.
"...but he was a nasty troublemaker, always was. Vander had to put him down to make nice with the Enforcers. Unfortunately he got away.”
Or maybe “Silco was Vander’s piece of ass for a while, vicious little animal, but they fell out violently over tactics and good riddance”.
Or “he was our friend, but sadly he took a dark path."
Vi: "so Vander tried to help him, right?"
Benzo: "well..."
...yeah I see why they cut the explanation, it's hard to see a version which does not clash with Vi's inclination to put Vander on a pedestal.

Forward, but Never Forget/XOXO - Ch: 20 - Pentimento
Tumblr media
Snippet:
"Well, yeah!" Jinx crooked a finger. "After your history lesson, I got to thinkin.' What is it that makes Zaun's topography so unique?"
"You mean why it's a hodgepodge of gaudy and grotesque?"
"Exactly! And then it hit me. It's not simple aesthetic. It's like layers of a painting! And these layers all sit on top of each other in a time-lapse!  All the Jugendstil antiquities in the Sumps are from the mercantile era, when Topside was booming into a bigass metropolis. The utilitarian cages of steel and glass in Entresol are from the Void Wars, when refugees were packed together like sardines in a tin. And the latest super-stilty stuff on the Promenade, that looks like it's made outta papier-mâché—that's from our heyday, when raw materials got so depleted, we had to use foreign scraps in construction."
Silco nods. "Go on."
"When I thought about it, a word popped into my head: pentimento. I read about it some old art history book. It's a Shuriman word for underpainting. When an artist layers over their first attempt. The best way to do that is with colors and shapes that are similar. Except the layers become a chronology. Each one is connected to the next by a timeline. New on top of old on top oldest. That's us!"
"Us?"
"Zaun!" She snaps her fingers. "We're a city of salvaged scraps. But our base is the ancient architecture of Oshra Va'Zaun. It's never gone away. We've built on it, covered it, but never erased it. All the layers are there! A whole network of runes hidden from sight. We just need to find them!"
"What's this have to do with powering up our infrastructure?"
Jinx spread her hands, exasperated. "Don't you get it? That means Zaun's already a grid! A whole a repository of runes! I've read that the ancient ones kept 'em as a system of ley lines. They used 'em like power cables to create conduits for magic. Raising storms. Vaporizing rocks. Waking Eldritch Horrors from slumber..."
Slowly, Silco sat up. "You believe the Hex-gem is our way to tap those old ley-lines?"
"Yep! We just need to find 'em all."
AO3 - Forward, But Never Forget/XOXO
FFnet - Forward, But Never Forget (XOXO)
Playlists, Fanarts & Meta
Summary:  Zaun is free—and must grow into its unfamiliar new dimensions. So must Silco and Jinx. A what-if that diverges midway through the events of episode 8. Found family and fluff, politics and power, smut and slice-of-life, villainy and vengeance.
