A fic I wrote, heavily inspired by The Song Of Achilles. ✨✨✨
Tumblr media
(Patroclus Centric)
Pairing: Briseis x Patroclus (Slight romance referenced)
(Achilles x Patroclus implied)
Title: He is half the god she should be (“He is more god than I, you know.”)
Summary:
He is my destination. I am the ship. She is my shore.
Warm and safe, always here to secure. Yet, I desire more than the comforts offered, to have a taste at the salty sea of my tears.
To run to him and bask in his glory.
To be holy with him.
To be holy forever.
To steer away from possible, and drench in the possibilities I am undeserving of.
The mast bends under my wake and call. I holler to him, he is beyond my reach. I still sob his name into the hollowed winds round, stomp childishly as if to bring him back.
I come for him, he watches me so. He does not come.
The gods tug him back,
he does not see my tears.
I do not see his.
Yet, she is here to catch me as I fall.

where's my Song of Achilles anon at ! I read the book. liked some stuff didn't like other stuff. it was fanficition of a two thousand year old poem from a three thousand or more year old story. stuff gets silly. Odysseus was still my favorite he's always my guy. Anyway rest of my thoughts under the cut
I think I liked the perspective of Patroclus a really normal guy next to the warrior of the ages. One pov of a boy unsure of his place in the world surrounded by men older and claiming to be wiser and his godly boytoy.
Tumblr media
this personally made me cackle. Patroclus is that oh my god get him some brown contacts please meme.
The myths were actually pretty good. I like how vague they were about Patroclus's mother there are like six different women in history claimed to be her it's really Patroclus's paternal ancestors that matter.
I think it's genuinely a major issue with the plot that Patroclus knew of the prophecy and still acted in accordance to Homeric Legend. I just think he should have found out right before but too late when they're in Troy already perhaps in an angry scorn from Thetis about he'll lose too.
Like you I also thought it was stupid as fuck how Patroclus was a totally useless twink. Didn't even know about legendary Myrmidons the fighting force named after his great grandfather mind you. The mythic ant stuff is literally his own family history.
Achilles being so nervous about the war only to fall into it so easily. Like a god finding their domain he was born for it. I really enjoyed the nitty gritty of war planning too. Him getting Achilles dressed the lips being the only part of him still soft. That was awesome why is that no quoted more. Achilles climbing onto Patroclus covered in blood like god that scene is going to be in my head on a loop. There is so much to it. Patroclus knowing him by scent and touch alone but what creature has come to wake him? Achilles so proud of what he's done seeing the revulsion in his lover who was so sure nothing Achilles could do would revolt him.
There could have for sure been so much more to a much more sensitive Patroclus being unable to love Achilles anymore and that's why Achilles stops fighting until Patroclus realizes he can't hold back his demigod lover from greatness. Taking the book in a radical direction but alas.
Brisies was very well done I appreciated her character a lot. I think it was a very good choice to expand on her mythos and remove a lot of the violence. People often read myths and go oh so he raped her when that's either not stated in the text/not needed to include other than their fetishes driving them.
ALSO so fucking annoying Patroclus doesn't die because he's no good at fighting he dies because Hector is Better. Hector is the sole reason the Acheans struggled. He was the Trojan Achilles idk how that point got turned into well Patroclus could barely hold a spear tee hee. Spending the whole book being like Patroclus can't fight ooh one of Achilles's generals is useless. To then be like jk as in accordance with the Iliad he's really good and killed a bunch of people is actually bad writing sorry. I did giggle at Apollo just fucking with him knocking him off the wall all pretty like just twirling his perfect hair.
Turning Troilus the son of Apollo who Achilles chased down tried to rape and then beheaded in the temple of Apollo leaving his mutilated body for his father to die and therefore the reason Apollo kills him into a random death cause the boy was an idiot. Like Troilus literally the Greek representation of losing a young son to unjust murder. Well okay then...
Thetis raising Achilles's son here is so perfect because that boy is rancid. He saw Agememnon and said I could do worse watch I'll go kill Hector's baby just for fun. And they really delivered on what a piece of fucking shit he was.
Thetis giving in, in the end was really good. Liked it
Overall I think the book was really good. I approached it from the knowledge this is taking thousands of years of myths and giving it to the perspective of a side character and I think it delivered.

I just found your tumblr from AO3. I read ‘Thousand Times I’ve Fallen’ and just wanted to tell you how thoroughly I enjoyed that piece! I would love to see you write more of Richard and Henry. Your writing of them is entirely in character and beautifully worded.
I couldn’t help but notice that you referenced Patroclus and Achilles (and Brisies). Have you ever considered writing your own take on the trio? I think you would be incredible at it.
First of all, thank you so very much for reading, and reaching out! Henry and Richard have a vice on my heart, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've got a couple fics up on AO3 if you're looking for more of them!
I actually hadn't thought much about writing in regards to your ask. I've done extensive research and writing on the Iliad for school, and while I've read and enjoyed Song of Achilles, right now I tend to just stick with the concept of those relationships as metaphors and comparisons. It's an interesting dynamic that that trio has, though, so maybe I'll give the source material and then SoA a reread or two when I have time, and see if any ideas come to light.

@galaxydrcaming || For Brisies
Tumblr media
If Patroclus was honest, he did his best not to dwell too much on the past. Thinking about the death, and heartache the war had been filled with, it saddened him that everything had ended in such tragedy. But almost nothing brought him more pain than thinking about what fate Brisies had been left with. Only Achilles had been more precious to him than her, and he missed the woman every day.
He made a point of bringing her face to his mind every day, never wanting to forget her no matter how much the memory ached. What he didn't anticipate was to see that face suddenly in front of him, ahead on the street. Patroclus stopped, staring for just a moment and not wanting to let himself hope, but eventually called out.
"Brisies?"

‘Battle of Troy’ Based on Troy (2004) movie
Tumblr media
Troy is an ancient city situated on the northeast coast of Turkey. The Trojan war is a famous war, held between Troy and Sparta in Greek mythology. Homer was an author who had written one of the greatest epic poem in history named ‘Iliad’. The Trojan war was fully described in the ‘Iliad’. A brief history of Trojan war according to Troy movie (2004) is described below:
Troy was a peaceful country. Priam was the king of Troy who was very benevolent. Priam had two notable sons and they were- Hector and Paris. Hector was the greatest warrior in the Trojan army. He was a great leader, son and father. Paris was very attractive and lovable. But he wasn’t as much responsible as his elder brother Hector. On the other hand, Sparta was another ancient city in Greece. Sparta was an imoportant site in Mycenae. Mycenaean period was the most powerful period then. Menelaus was the Spartan king. Menelaus’s elder brother Agamemnon was the king of Mycenae. Agamemnon was a powerful warrior but not a good person. Menelaus was mostly a follower of his elder brother but was not as victorious as his brother. Menelaus was married to Helen, who was a beautiful lady. Helen never loved Menelaus and neither did he. Achilles was the bravest and best warrior of Sparta. Achilles was strong and careless.
Once Spartan king Menelaus invited Trojan princes Hector and Paris and were making a peaceful treaty between sparta and Troy. There, Paris fell in love with Helen and so did she. But Helen told Paris that she couldn’t be with him as she was married to Menelaus. paris made a plan to be with Helen. The next day Hector and Paris left for Troy and paris according to his plan smuggled Helen to Troy. In the middle of the journey, Paris showed Helen to Hector and explained about their affair. Hector felt embarraced of Paris. But consequently Paris convinced Hector and finally took Helen to Troy.
Meanwhile, Agamemnon and Menelaus discovered the runaway of Helen with Paris. Menelaus became furious and told Agamemnon that he wanted a revenge. Agamemnon liked that and planned to attack Troy and control the most important coastal city of Asia. Then Agamemnon commanded all the kings of Greece to gather their armies against Troy. And as Troy was a very powerful city, Agamemnon wanted to hire Achilles, the best warrior. As achilles wanted to be remembered in the history, he joined the war between Troy and Sp[arta with his young cousin Patroclus.
Hector and Paris arrived at Troy with Helen. Priam, king of Troy accepted Helen wisely as his daughter in law and named her ‘Helen of Troy. The next day Spartan army arrived at the beach of Troy and began to destroy the apollo temples of Troy. There, Briseis, cousin of Hector and Paris was praying.Achilles took Briseis and returned to the Spartan camp. agamemnon wanted to have Briseis but Achilles protested and there created a feud between them. So Achilles denied to go to the battle next day.
The next day Paris challenged Menelaus. There held a duel between them. Paris used the sword of Troy in the battle. But as Paris was very weak and he had never been to any battle, Menelaus easily took away Paris’s shield. Menelaus injured Paris in the thigh and he fell to his knees and scrawled to his brother and could not stand back again. Hector caught hold of Paris and disagreed with Menelaus and Agamemnon tom let Paris return to the battle again. Menelaus became violent saying that the rules of war had been violeted and attemted to kill Paris. Then Hector killed Menelaus immediately. Agamemnon became shocked at his brother’s sudden death and ordered the Greek armies to attack Trojans then and then. Then a great fight betweeen trojan and Greek started. In the fight Hector killed one of the powerful warrior of Grreek, Ajax. After that Greek army soon returned to their ships. Trojan King Priam started to gather his councilors to plan about attacking the Greeks. The Trojan armies were very good at archeries. So, Priam ordered his archers to attack the Greeks in the next day at day break. The Trojan archers threw flame arrows to the Greek camps. And then Hector and his armies surronded the Greek camp and attacked the Greeks. Then Patroclus was in the armor of Achilles to inspire the Greek armies as Achilles denied to fight. Hector thought Patroclus to be Achilles and killed him. When he removed the helmet, he realized that the one he killed wasn’t Achilles but his cousin Patroclus. Achilles heard about the death of his cousin and became raged in anger.
The next day Achilles challenged Hector for a dual. Hector got prepared for the battle. Hector was sure of his demise and so he in the previous night showed his wife Andromache a secret tunnel out of Troy. He also told her to rescue as much Trojans as she could when there would be a full battle in the city of Troy.
There held a great dual between Achilles and Hector. Both of them were so courageous and strong. But eventually Achilles killed Hector and took his body with him to the Greek camp. At this Praim got hurt. So, in the middle of the night, Priam went to the Greek camp in disguise and rerquested Achilles to return his son’s death body to him as his son deserved an honour of proper burial. achilles was pleased with the courage of Priam and returned his son’s body and Briseis to Priam and told him that Hector was the best warrior Achilles ever fighted. And then Achilles announced a 12 days off of the battle for Hector’s funeral. Agamemnon became angry at that. At that time Odysseus, king of Ithaca, planned to build a great Trojan horse and told Agamemnon that they could attack troy by hiding in that horse.
The Trojan thought the Trojan horse to be a blessing from the sea God Poseidon ans accepted that. At the dead of the night, The Greeks came out of the horse and began to destroy Troy. At that time, Hector’s wife Andromache led Paris and otherTrojans through the secret tunnel. Paris left Helen telling that he would come with Briseis and went to find Briseis. On the other hand, Achilles kept searching the Troy for Briseis as he fell in love with her. Priam watched the Greeks destroying all the Trojan religiousa datatues and claimed that Greeks had no respect for the God. Then,Agamemnon killed Praimand caught hold of Briseis and tried to enslave her. But at that time, Briseis killed Agamemnon with a blade she was hiding in her back. Then Achilles came running and found Brisies there. Paris found them both, shooted Achilles with arrows several times in the heels and killed him. Briseis burst into tears but Paris took her with him and left for the tunnel out of Troy. At last Odysseus found Achilles’s body and arranged a funeral for him.
The battle of troy was a great battle but none of the side won the battle as both of the king got  killed. The beautiful city Of Troy got destroyed because of jealousy, stubbornness and love.

We had our first cast read through last Sunday! Here’s the team having fun and taking this lament super duper seriously.
Slave Woman’s Lament is a song led by Briseis and other enslaved women around the Greek camp after the death of Patroclus as they sing about the ways they’ve been abused and overlooked, and as Briseis tears into Achilles for how he failed to protect Patroclus.
Featured lyrics:
WE SING YOUR GRIEF TO MAKE YOU HEAR
WE RISE LIKE SMOKE AND DISAPPEAR
AND GRIEF GIVES WAY TO
GRIEF GIVES WAY TO
GRIEF GIVES WAY TO GRIEF
[IPHIS]
WE CAME SO FAR
[DIOMEDE]
WE BEAR THE SCARS
[IPHIS]
BUT THE GLORY’S YOURS TO KEEP
[BRISEIS]
SO YOU’LL SAY THE HERO LOVED HIM
MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE DID
MY HEART WAS BROKEN
BUT HOW I FELT IT
THE GENTLE GRIEF WHEN HE WAS NEAR
NOW ALL THAT’S LEFT ARE ASHES
YOU WILL BURN HIM DOWN TO ASHES
(As always, libretto by the lovely @everydayatleast! Brisies will be played by @hsiw-I, Iphis will be played by Grace C, and Diomede will be played by @permets-2!)

okay so book review time because i keep thinking about this! i just read ‘the song of achilles’ by madeline miller, after really enjoying her novel ‘circe.’ but last year i’d also read ‘the silence of the girls,’ by pat barker, and it’s impossible to not compare and contrast them, because they both are drastically different tellings of the same thing: achilles in the trojan war. (’song’ was published in 2012 and ‘silence’ in 2018.)
quick achilles 101 in case ya’ll aren’t as into this as me:
achilles was the son of a king and a sea nymph, granted strength and speed greater than anyone else. summoned to fight in the trojan war, he was told he would earn great valor and fame but die. he was like, sign me up. he brought with him his army and also his companion patroclus, who had been his friend and companion since childhood, and may also have been his lover/soulmate/foster brother/best friend — there’s a lot of interpretation over the centuries, but what is clear is that patroclus is achilles’s Very Important Person. at some point during the siege of troy, achilles is rewarded a woman named briseis for his valor in battle. she is the widow of a prince of a nearby city achilles sacked, and she is very beautiful.
some time later, agamemnon, the commander of the greek forces, demands achilles give him briseis for his own — achilles had previously angered agamemnon and he’s seeking to land a blow to achilles’s pride. it works! achilles argues that briseis is actually his wife, and when that fails, he swears to abandon the war and let all greeks die rather than fight for agamemnon. achilles then returns to his camp and sulks. the war starts to go really badly, and patroclus, in an attempt to rally the forces, dresses in achilles’s armor and pretends to be him. it works too well: the trojans kill him. achilles flies into a heartbroken rage and goes on the warpath, just fucking killing everyone and defiling the body of hector (important trojan; killed patroclus) until he himself is killed. briseis had been returned to achilles and mourns him and prepares his body for his funeral; what becomes of her after the war is never stated.
so.
these books cover those events, but from different points of view: ‘song’ is told from the eyes of patroclus, and ‘silence’ from brisies.
in ‘song,’ patroclus and achilles are lovers, in a committed relationship. the focus is very tightly on achilles through patroclus’s eyes — and it’s a very sympathetic portrait, where achilles is kind and lonely and has firm morals and doubts, but is not used to being told no and whose pride eventually gets the better of him. briseis is a peasant girl who patroclus is horrified to see about to be sold into sexual slavery: he convinces achilles to claim her, and treats her as a friend or a sister. briseis is intelligent and funny and becomes close friends with patroclus, who continues to gather women to save them from rape, and these women are shown to be happy and make happy marriages with greeks in achilles’s camp. when briseis is given to agamemnon, patroclus intervenes to prevent her rape or harm, and when patroclus and achilles die, briseis is killed soon after, murdered while fleeing to avoid rape.
in ‘silence,’ briseis is the widow of the king of her city, and taken by achilles as a prize. he does rape her, but grows oddly fond of her — something that frightens briseis and that she only tolerates. she does grow to like patroclus, but dislikes herself for it; much of the novel is focused on her and the other women in her position, who are trying to cope and live with their reality. patroclus says he can make achilles marry her, but briseis is doubtful he means it, although the narration admits she considers it, if only to no longer be a slave. at the end of the book, briseis is married to a soldier in achilles’s camp — it is not a love match, but a practical one, and leaves with him to return to his home in greece, hopeful that she can find some agency in her new life; something the narration hints does happen.
in ‘song,’ the trojans are fairly faceless and patroclus doesn’t think about them much: he dislikes fighting and battle and death, is shown to be a poor fighter, and keeps himself out of the politics, preferring to assist with healing. he’s very close with all the men of camp, and all the women (rape, in this book, is done by Obvious Villains like agamemnon only), and grows angry with achilles when achilles’s pride leads to the deaths of his friends. at one point, he attempts to council briseis about what to do if the trojans attack the camp while she’s there, and is surprised when she expresses doubts she will be harmed — he reminds himself that she is aligned with them, and to them they are not the enemy. however, there’s really no examination about this political reality or how briseis must feel about her capture and enslavement, even if she is good friends with her captors: the focus is only on achilles.
in ‘silence,’ briseis has fond feelings towards the trojans and hates the greeks. she has a rather cynical point of view, but always carefully aligns herself with the women of the camp over the soldiers: ignoring her suffering to celebrate the freeing of a girl, doubting and disliking women who claim to be in love with greek captors, or want to bear their children, hating herself for coming to like patroclus. patroclus, as in ‘song’, is shown to be empathic and good at managing moods and people, not just achilles: he comes across as likable, and his own bedslave considers herself lucky because he’s very kind to her, inviting her to talk with him and achilles and treating her as a person, an honor he also extends to briseis.
interestingly, achilles is, i would argue, more rounded in ‘silence’ than ‘song,’ despite ‘song’ being a love story involving him. achilles in ‘song’ is distant and aloof to everyone but patroclus — not cruel, but almost shy and awkward, disengaged and quiet unless he’s on a battlefield. many of the moments where he’s talking and engaging with friends are skimmed over or only alluded to, which adds to the problem — he comes off as a figure more than a person, and his sulk and arrogance later in the story seem like a surprise, a sudden renunciation of his past ideals and reluctance to hurt, without the time given to show their development.
in ‘silence,’ he’s arrogant and aloof and strange, but cares deeply about his men and spends his days working and joking around. early in the book, a man briseis particularly dislikes for often leering at her grows ill, and she is surprised when achilles tends to his bedside personally, rubbing his feet and checking in — something ‘song’s’ achilles never does towards anyone.
patroclus is fairly well written, the story being told from his pov, but comes off as passive and uncertain, universally kind and shocked by cruelty.
in his backstory in the legend, he is in fact a murderer: as a child, he quarreled with a boy and killed him with a rock. both books treat this differently: in ‘song’ it was an accident, the boy falling onto a rock after being shoved. in ‘silence’ patroclus admits a rage came over him, although says he didn’t mean to do it. in ‘song,’ the boy killed was a bully and cruel. in ‘silence,’ it was patroclus’s best friend. (in ‘song’ the heroes are kind and flawless and the villains are broadly written.)
briseis is often unkind in her thoughts, weary and bitter, although always kind and supportive to other women, even ones she privately dislikes. her narration always sympathizes with the victims — from helen, scorned in troy, to a slave woman she sees murdered, to her unpleasant mother-in-law — and is always dubious of the greeks.
‘silence’ is not a dark book, although obviously its themes are. there’s no graphic depictions of rape — it is alluded to and glossed over, and the most shocking act isn’t sexual at all. there’s much focus on just the women bonding and coping and surviving, even laughing and gossiping, and it’s more of a survival story than one of hardship and trauma. ‘song’ is much lighter in tone, but also more of a love story than one designed to talk about war: both novels are well researched and have plenty of clever references to legend and myth.
i enjoyed both! but it’s absolutely impossible to read one and not think of the other. the same story, characters, and legend, but utterly different tones and points of view.

Patrochilles modern au part 1
So Patroclus and Achilles have been friends for ever
They met when they were like 9-10 at elementary school
They were together in class but at first they never spoke to each other
Patroclus first noticed Achilles at gym class
Because they way he ran was unreal
It was like he was flying and patroclus couldn't helped but staring
Achilles looked at him and smiled at some point
And Patroclus blushed
After that nothing happened tho because Patroclus was a bit jealous of Achilles
Because Achilles was beautiful, he was good at his classes without trying, everyone wanted to be his friend
While Patroclus was really quite and didn't have many friends
Achilles however didn't really care about all the kids that tried to talk to him
He sometimes listened to them but he didn't really hang out with any of them
Achilles tried to catch Patroclus eye because there was something about him that intrigued him
But Patroclus just pretended he was imagining things and kept ignoring Achilles
One day however they were at gym class and Achilles was playing basketball
And he caught Patroclus watching him
So he thought this was the perfect opportunity
"catch" he said and he throwed the ball at him
After that they started talking a bit
And Patroclus found out he genuinely enjoyed Achilles company because he was quite funny and clever and honest
So the ended up being best friends
They started hanging out every day at school
And after a while they started hanging out even after school
Patroclus didn't really have the best relationship with his parents
His Mather had died when he was a baby and his father never had a good relationship with him
Achilles parents were divorced
His mother was really rich and overprotective and she wanted her son to hang out only with kids of "his level"
His father on the other hand was a really good man and he liked Patroclus
So they used to go to Peleus home after school and study
And at the weekends they played to Peleus garden for hours
Peleus knew the relationship between Patroclus and his family so he sort of adopted him
Patroclus spend more time in Peleus and Achilles house rather than his own
The weekends tho Achilles had to visit his mother
And Thetis didn't want her son to hang out with Patroclus because he was not as rich
Anyway so let's just say that Patroclus had a tiny bit of a crush on Achilles
And Achilles had a tiny bit of a crush on Patroclus too
So one day they were around 13-14 at Peleus back garden and they were looking at the stars and something came over Patroclus and he kissed Achilles
It was mainly a small peck on the lips but it was so sweet
Achilles panicked however because he wad afraid of his mother's reaction so he pulled back
They never mentioned it again and nothing changed between them they just continued being best friends
However both of them blushed a little bit more now
They didn't really have any more friends they were just hanging out with each other
They really were inseparable
Mainly because Achilles insisted that he didn't want any other friends
Because he constantly needed attention from Patroclus and when he didn't have his full attention he was a grympy puppy
When they were 16 tho Achilles decided he had had enough
He couldn't stop thinking about Patroclus and his lips and his dark curls and his big amainzg eyes
So one day they were at his room at Peleus home and Achilles just kissed his brains out
Patroclus was a bit shocked at first but then he remembered how long he wanted this so he kissed back
And short story they decided to become boyfriends but keep it a secret from Thetis because they were sure she wouldn't approve
They never told it to Peleus either but he always had known
Everything goes pretty well until one day they are at their last year of high school and Thetis somehow found out about her son's relationship with Patroclus
So she announced to him that Achilles is going to attend a uni in another town
Achilles obviously doesn't want to and says that he just won't
He also doesn't want to say anything to Patroclus because he doesn't want to make him worry for no reason because he obviously won't be going
But Thetis doesn't give him a choice and she tricks him so he is forced to leave without being able to explain anything to Patroclus
So one day Patroclus just wakes up and he can't find Achilles anywhere
He is phone is turned off and he is nowhere to be found
Of course he is worried sick about him
So he goes to Peleus and confronts him
And Peleus tells him where Achilles is and because he knows how much they need each other he sends Patroclus to find him and attend the same uni as Achilles
Patroclus wastes no time and the next day he starts packing
When he arrived he was so excited because Thetis wouldn't be able to stay with them so he and Achilles would be totally free to do what they want
So he immediately goes to find him
But he founds Achilles kissing a girl
Patroclus didn't stay long enough tho to see how forced the kiss was from Achilles' part or how he shoved the girl away after a second
He just started running away
Achilles however saw him imidiatly and he just run right behind him not caring about the protests of the girl
Achilles found him and just held Patroclus' face between his hands and went to kiss him but Patroclus pussed him away
Achilles manged to explain everything to him and he wad shaking and he told Patroclus how his mother had insisted that he should date this girl and that if he did it she would tell Patroclus where he was so he absolutely had to do it because he had missed him so much and he couldn't live any longer without him
And Patroclus of course believed him because he knew that Achilles would never lie to him and he could see how his eyes were glittering, the tears threatening to spill
So he hugged Achilles and said it was all okay and that he did belive him
And Achilles said that now that he was here he would immediately break up with the girl because the only reason he was with her was to have Patroclus back and his mother didn't even tell him
And true to his word he did break up with her
And Diamedia (of course) started shouting that she didn't agree
But anyways her father decided that she would go home for this semester and that's what happened
At college Achilles and Patroclus became The Couple™
They were so happy that they could finally be together without Thetis being a pain it their arses
They were too cute
Patroclus also met that girl Brisies because she was taking biology classes with him
And they immediately hit it off
They became really good friends and Patroclus was happy that he had someone to hang out with when Achilles was not with him
Achilles spend a lot of time practicing in the football team
He loved football but he loved music even more
He was ridiculously talented in both of them
He played the piano (because he was a posh rich boy Okey?) but he only played for Patroclus to hear
Needless to say that Patroclus loved it
One day tho Thetis informed Achilles that there was a football tournament a few miles away and that it was his best opportunity if he wanted to actually make football a carrier
She also informed him that it will be difficult because the other team was really good too and that he would have to stay there for a few months
Achilles decided to go and he obviously asked Pat to come with him
He didn't want to force him tho because he was studying medicine and he new his boyfriend wanted to be good at it
But Patroclus of course wanted to be with Achilles 24/7 so he obviously decided to take that semester off and go with him
Achilles was so happy and overexcited like an over enthusiastic puppy and when they arrived he just dragged patroclus from the hand to show him around
Pat just smiled at how ridiculous his boyfriend was and followed
When the tournament started Patroclus was always there to watch the matches and see his hot boyfriend playing
And Achilles was always smiling at him when he scored or generally when he had the chance
His team mates tho didn't appreciate it as much
"Achilles if you put half of the attention you put on Patroclus to the game we could have won an hour ago" "shut up Odysseus"

Don't think about how many people grieved for Patroclus' death. Don't think about how Patroclus knew every Greek by name and how they would all feel the loss of his kind and calming smile and his gentle hands. Don't think about the girls he had Achilles shelter from the other kings and who he taught Greek to. Achilles grief was the only one we witnessed because Patroclus only ever saw Achilles but everyone saw Patroclus and I guarantee Achilles and Brisies were not the only 2 to be in love with him

Born to Beg
{word count: 1320}
I grip his hand tighter, colours flickering, fading, waxing, waning. It’s cold. Too cold. I can hardly breathe and neither can he, chest struggling to keep his lungs full, dried blood (his blood. my fault) coating his mouth, a crusted trail from his soft, bluing lips down to his chin. I choke back my tears (my fault my fucking fault) and gently brush his cheek with my other hand. I want it to be warm, I want him to feel what I’m feeling. I want to see the chocolate of his hair, but the colour is draining from it as each precious second passes.
“Patroclus, please,” I say in a chocked whisper, turning away to catch my breath.
I should never have listened to him, never have given in to that warm smile, those soft arms, his slim waist. Oh, philtatos, how could I have been so stupid? I sent you to your death and you went with all the loyalty in Greece.
The dark, sweat-soaked face of Automedon pushes through the covering of the tent.
“Get out!” I yell, accusing, “Get out of here! He’s... he’s... because of you!”
(no achilles, no. you know this is all you. all i had to do was deny him, to be as brave as the songs will remember me. to go out and fight the war i was destined for. and because i thought i could, what? hide from the fates? curl in on myself and and hope they don’t find me? and now the only person i’ve ever loved is paying for my mistakes, the weight of my actions crushing him. idiot.)
But it’s that much easier to blame others. Blame Automedon, our best friend, the one who steered my chariot whilst brave Patroclus stood holding my spear, wearing my armour. Blame Hector, the enemy, who stabbed him thinking he was me. Agamemnon. Whose arrogance drove me into our tent in the first place.
Blame the Gods.
Oh, how easy it is to blame them when you have nothing left to lose. Where was Pallas, sworn to protect us? Where was Thetis, where was Poseidon? How could they let Phoebus’ cruel hand undo the armour I had placed on him to protect his gentle heart? What were they worth?
But blaming won’t wake him. The scarlet (black. no.) stain still spreads across his chest, like a weed that keeps growing back every time you pull it out. The spear anchored in him, a trophy, evil and sneering. I want to pry it loose and hurl it across the dusty ground, cover him with cloth and crawl into bed next to him, letting his gentle, fleeting breaths lull me to sleep, my arms wrapped around his torso.
(small, cautious steps. rabbit or deer. even with the thunderous stampede of battle, i’d recognize those footfalls anywhere. my heart leaps in spite of myself. home. he’s safe. i rush to greet him as soon as he opens up the tent. his muscles under his clothes are taunter than they were the year we sailed here. his lips more familiar than the journey home. his mouth holding on to the taste of fruits and olive. of late nights and early mornings. i never want to let him go. much rather i trace his collarbones, his shoulders, his spine with my fingers infinitely, but he pushes me away gently with his quiet smile.as if here were ashamed by his own happiness. i swear i didn’t know what i was doing. i swear by the gods it would have been different if i had only known.
the best of the greeks? my gentle patroclus? to me, of course. but i could never have predicted the fates shared my sentiment.
‘they need you. you’ll win this for us,” he begged, on his knees, gripping the hem of my tunic. one move away from supplication.
“don’t. stand up.” i pull him to his feet and he collapses into me, soul fracturing.
already as good as dead.
“we both know i can’t go out there.” i kiss him. just below his eye.
he nods. eyes averted. we thought the fates meant me, and i couldn’t face the thought of hades receiving me without him.)
A violent cough, the first sign of life from his cold body coaxes a whimper from his throat and shocks my world into brilliant iridescence before heartlessly sucking it back into the ground. Tiny, malevolent tendrils of colour remind me of his struggle and that it really is blood threaded through his hair and dripping over the curves of his stomach.
(stripped almost bare in front of me, arms held out expectantly. the last thing i want is to cover him again in my cruel, foreboding armour. it takes everything i have to remind myself that this is what he wanted.
“you’ll stay in the chariot, won’t you?” i plead, securely fastening and re-fastening the breastplate. he shifts, adjusting to the unfamiliar weight now resting on him. his hand grips my shoulder.
“you forget. i have trained. for eight years into this war i have studied with odysseus, fought with diomedes. thrown spears with ajax. i am nearly as capable with a horse as automedon.”
“and me?”
he grins in reply. cheeky. a promise, but quickly he’s serious once more.
“all they need is a reminder of the weapon on their side. you’re the best of us, but they need you as a symbol more than a man. your helmet, your chariot, it no longer matters who’s with them.”
“you’ll stay in the chariot,” i repeat, “automedon will drive you through the battle and back. you don’t get out. you don’t kill anyone.”
he kisses me quickly, a kiss i would have held on to if i had known it to be our last. a kiss i would have followed up with a goodbye. instead, i didn’t even watch him leave the tent.
i had known him since we were children. and in all that time, all those decades, not once did i tell him i loved him.)
Briseis is the only other person I will allow near his body. They had always been close, but the only reason I contend with her presence is that she blames me, too. More than I blame myself. She dribbles strong cordial down his throat, but the wet, gasping sound that ensures moves me to retaliate.
“You’ll kill him!” I cry, shoving her away.
“He’s already dying! Are you too blinded by your own pride to see even that?” She glares at me, voice of a viper.
(death was not in my thoughts at all when Apollo stripped the armour from his fragile body. i had no reason to see it coming closer when Hector’s spear pierced his unprotected flesh.
I ignored the startling second colour was stolen from me, pinning it on the lack of sleep and excess of nerves.
his dinner reached a comfortable temperature when the hand pulled back the entrance of the tent.
“just in time.” a nervous laugh, smothered by relief, “i thought i would have to eat alone but...”
the hand i reached for was not his.
the pain bored into the eyes of antilochos was enough to make me stumble.
“achilles -”
“he’s not. he stayed in the chariot. protected by my armour. nobody would have been able to reach him. you’re confused.”
“i’m sorry, achilles.”
“stop! stop acting like he’s dead! he’s not! he’s not... wait here. he’ll be back soon. and you’ll see, you’ll see!”
our best soldiers are defending him as we speak, bu there’s no telling how long they’ll be able to hold out against troy’s forces. you have to come with me.”)
His eyes fluttered open and my heart skipped a beat.
“I’m here, my love, I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”
Brisies frowned, but I ignored her air of confusion. I watched her leave the tent, colours dimming further with each footfall. (dimming? why dimming? he’s alive. he’ll be okay.)
“Achilles,” he spluttered in a hoarse whisper, his rapidly constricting lungs prohibiting him from continuing. Carefully, I lifted his head into my arms.
“I know. I know. Me too.”
Tenderly, my lips pressed against his clammy forehead.
“You can rest now,” I spoke through the kiss.
The moment I broke contact, both his world and mine were plunged into permanent monochrome.
I wouldn’t want to live in a world of colour without him anyway.

Achilles never lies. Patroclus will, for him. Especially if it means holding his hand in front of friends and coworkers.
