a great way to analyze this shot (because people were saying he was emotionless in this scene) is that he was trying his best not to feel any emotion, considering he’s lost so much over the span of the apocalypse that he can’t bear to lose someone else he cares about. what we saw from joel here was him trying to detach from tess in real time cause he’s already gone through the mental gymnastics of the pain he’ll feel once he leaves that building in a span of seconds and it’s so heartbreaking
