Can’t believe Netflix cancelled yet another WLW show to not give it a proper ending… I’m so tired y’all. First IANOWT, then First Kill, Everything Sucks, Teenage Bounty Hunters, and now Warrior Nun…..
Tumblr media
“Cancelling a sapphic show on Netflix” is now a “bury your gays” trope.. hoping it gets picked up by another streaming service like Hulu or Peacock. Any Netflix sapphic show is destined to be doomed after 1 season cancellation. I’m very tired y’all. Why do steaming services hate sapphic couples and not want them to be happy..

“You can’t ship them! It’ll ruin their friendship!”
Alright then, tell me you’ve never been in a healthy romantic relationship without telling me you’ve never been in a healthy romantic relationship.
Okay seriously, you’re allowed to dislike a ship but don’t try to use this argument. People don’t suddenly stop being friends when they’re in a romantic relationship that was built on a strong foundation of platonic love. I understand in a society heavily based on heteronormativity and “romantic feelings > platonic love” narrative it might be a little jarring to some (this is sarcasm because it’s really NOT that hard to get)… but like. The best relationships I’ve been in I was still homies with my partner throughout, doing stupid shit together and enjoying their company and whatnot you know? If it’s a good, healthy relationship then adding romance to the mix doesn’t suddenly wipe away the friendship said relationship was built upon. You can and should be friends with your partner- amazing, I know.
Now, everyone repeat after me: friendship and romance are not mutually exclusive. Romance doesn’t inherently undermine friendship. Romance is not ‘better’/more important than friendship. YOU CAN AND SHOULD BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR PARTNER I CAN N O T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If you still don’t think shipping two female characters with a strong friendship is okay, just- c’mon now, people, just admit you don’t wanna see two girls kiss because you have some ✨homophobia✨ to work through.

i loves do revenge but i'm fucking pissed at netflix like always.
they made the main character (eleanor) openly queer and they made her and drea flirt so much and made you think they were gonna get together only for eleanor to end up with some girl who had no real fucking importance to the plot.
don't get me wrong, i love gabbi and i think her and eleanor are very cute together but it really feels like they just threw her in last minute just so that they wouldn't get anymore backlash from their sapphic viewers like they have gotten many times before.
but like i'm pretty sure i've said in another post, i'm not surprised, this is netflix after all

Stranger Things is a very big and popular show right now all over the world. Do you really expect them to write Byler and canonizing it over the favored straight ship in the show after 3 seasons? I am not asking this as a shipper. But as a viewer. I have no problem with Byler. I just cannot realistically see Byler happening all things considered.
also, from another anon: How likely do you think that byler might become Canon? Cuz there's a.lot of people threatening to boycott the show if it "TuRnS GAy"?
Short answer: Yes, I actually do expect them to make Byler canon, lol.
Long answer??? Let's get into it.
Why Byler Can Be Canon
For this post, I'm not gonna bother talking about why it should be canon or all the ways it would make sense. Instead, I'm going to talk about the signs that it can be canon, and why expecting Byler isn't as farfetched as certain homophobic Redditors seem to believe.
The Rise of Queer Media
Queer representation is on the rise. I'm not just talking about Heartstopper, gay rom-coms, and more queer media in general, I'm talking about queer representation in beloved series. Have all of you been brainwashed by Marvel and Star Wars and Disney franchises? Because outside of that, queer characters are popping up more and more. The Thirteenth Doctor is sapphic; Star Trek has queer couples; the new adaptations of It realized the queer subtext of the book and previous adaptations, even if it could have been done... better. The point is, queer representation is quite literally the best it's ever been.
And no one knows what people watch better than Netflix. We talk so much about the general audience but we don't actually know who they are--between the loudly vocal shippers on Tumblr and the vocal homophobes on Reddit, it's hard to see through the internet what people actually think. But Netflix? They have oodles of data of who's watched Stranger Things (and how many times) versus who's watched any number of shows with queer characters. And I genuinely feel that the overall trends would show that the general public at the very least tolerates queer characters on the screen.
Building Themes, Subverting Tropes, and Defying Expectations
The fact that they're main characters several seasons into the show make Certain People sure that they wouldn't switch things up. But Stranger Things is uniquely set up to do that in a way that makes sense and has impact. The characters are young and still figuring out their sexualities, and Mike growing up and realizing what his feelings mean would fit in with the themes of coming of age as well as themes of non-conformity. Additionally, Stranger Things has woven in enough hints toward it throughout the seasons that it truly isn't coming out of nowhere, and if it were canon, viewers could rewatch and notice all the things us Bylers have been screaming about.
Beyond that, Stranger Things has always been about subverting tropes and making you think deeper, with the Duffer Bros repeatedly saying that little details have meaning. Mike confessing his love to Eleven, Will getting rejected, it's all so predictable and unnecessary and uninteresting. For a show that is constantly challenging people to look deeper and which often flips expectations on their head, making Byler canon would honestly make more sense for the show that Stranger Things is.
This is not to mention that the show has always centered around a team of nerds and self-proclaimed "freaks and weirdos" who are canonically bullied and outcast. Is it so hard to believe that people with that background could be queer?
Last, Stranger Things has done one excellent queer coming out scene with Robin and it's not hard to believe they could do it again. Their excellent treatment of Robin is honestly overlooked as evidence that they will do good for Will and for Byler.
"The Favored Straight Ship"
Finally, there's this idea that they would never break up "the favored straight ship." Why do people think that, exactly? There's certainly no evidence in Stranger Things' canon that would support it.
Because they did break up Mileven in season 3, and showed that they were better apart. They never shy away from breaking up other couples for new ones, either, showing people dating around rather than having one person the whole time. (Because again, they're young, it's coming-of-age stuff, come on.) But think of how they introduced Bob for Joyce in place of Jopper, broke up Stancy for Jancy and might be breaking up Jancy for Stancy, broke up Lumax, even if temporary.
Mileven is only "favored" because it's been served to people on a silver platter. Stranger Things has now spent two seasons showing why Mileven isn't actually good for each other romantically, and four seasons developing Mike and Will's importance to each other.
Again, the vocal part of the internet is not representative of the average viewer of Stranger Things, and I think the majority of people might be surprised, but wouldn't be pissed, and might even rewatch with a new perspective. Not to mention the nearly 20,000 people on Tumblr now following the Byler tag who will be thrilled.
TLDR: If anyone was going to do it, Stranger Things would do it. It's a show that subverts expectations and makes viewers look deeper.

Stranger Things is written by a team of people who care about creating good queer representation.
One argument against Byler being endgame that I’ll never understand is the “Duffers + Stranger Things team are just homophobic, they’re queer-baiting and would never make it canon” one, because that’s just clearly not true?? Like at all lol.
Robin was originally written as Steve’s love interest, but after Maya (who is herself queer) suggested the idea that Robin be a lesbian, the Duffer brothers enthusiastically agreed and rewrote the scripts to account for this change. Since then, they’ve introduced a love interest for Robin, and written one of the most beautiful m/f friendships I’ve seen on screen. Seriously, the way they handled Robin’s whole coming out story is just beautiful!
Will Byers was always supposed to be gay. The hints are there since S1. And since S2 it’s clear that his feelings are held towards Mike specifically. This was written on-purpose by the Duffer brothers. Noah has even said that he’s known for years that Will is gay, but he had to be vague in interviews because the audience wasn’t meant to catch on right away (except for queer people, who of course understand his deliberate coding).
Robin and Will are both characters were meant to love and empathize with. Both of them being good queer characters with motives and personalities outside of their sexualities is great representation.
Stranger Things director Shawn Levy was the executive producer for I Am Not Okay with This, which I’ll always be mad at Netflix for cancelling. The show starred a lesbian girl struggling with anger and newfound powers, and was set up to develop into a beautiful wlw friends-to-lovers story.
Ross Duffer is married to the absolute icon and director of the sapphic horror series Fear Street: Leigh Janiak (seriously she’s amazing and FS has some of the best wlw representation I’ve ever seen). It’s a revolutionary series for the horror genre in the way it normalizes queer relationships. And I know FS and ST are two separate entities, but the themes are quite similar, highlighting found families of outcasts and finding self-acceptance in discriminatory worlds.
Not to mention the way the cast have reacted to Will’s sexuality being *finally* confirmed as gay, and especially to suggestions that Will is in love with Mike. Remember that interview where a question suggests Will and El are love interests and everyone gets giddy and talks about Will and Mike instead?? We have such a lovely cast, full of queer icons and allies who want Will to be happy!
So yeah, no, this is a team who are very much dedicated to putting out positive queer representation. Think what you want about Byler endgame, but the Stranger Things team being homophobes who queerbait shouldn’t even be a concern, IMO.
It’s really exciting to me that in such mainstream projects as Stranger Things, we’re seeing well-written queer representation. The examples I brought up weren’t made for queer audiences, but are written with general viewers in mind. That’s important to keep in mind when we’re discussing Byler endgame, because these are writers and directors who have proven that they care about LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media, and that makes it a realistic outcome.

YEAH NOBODY SENT ME ANY WTF. i was even drunk af when i reblogged that ppl were missing out smh. but ty my beloved dyke mike
10. did you do anything gay as a kid that makes sense when you look back on your childhood?
oh wow yeah. i mean i had an obsession with like every fucking goth girl character in children’s media FHDBDBDB i was not immune to the agenda. Sam from danny phantom, Shego from kim possible, June from atla. i’m stereotypical djdbdbdb. okay but i’m still obsessed i have no interest in watching the live action netflix show but i’d risk it all for her
Tumblr media
and the original VA’s VOICE GIDNXNSJFN
12. good sapphic poems/books/authors?
the one i am most obsessed with now is The Priory of the Orange Tree, it’s a high epic fantasy with dragons and religious coverups and a main sapphic couple BUT ALSO there’s background old man yaoi kind of.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is also phenomenal, it hits my love for old hollywood but also goes into the struggle of trying to make it back then in a racist, sexist, homophobic environment.
iand ’ll always tell people to read Sappho and Leslie Feinberg…
28. what's a canon sapphic ship you enjoy?
UTENANTHY
revolutionary girl utena is my fave anime of all time and honestly probably my favorite show? idk but it was rlly impactful for me. it’s absurd and surreal but also dark and heavy like you sometimes feel insane watching it but that’s the point. AND LOOK AT THEM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that second gif is from the movie which is kind of a sequel, kind of a reimagining. hard to explain haha.

Hello, I wanted to say, I really love your opinions on what would happen if pricefield was written as a stranger to friends to lovers story :) when you think deeply about it — there wasn't that many sapphic relationships (and achillean relationships too) used for childhood friends to lovers story back then, and even up until now (I don't want to count Catradora, it was like friends to enemies back to friends then lovers — I'm specifically talking about when friends WEREN'T enemies), a lot of them tend to go for StFtL these days you see in Netflix, and also because you know....heteronormativity and homophobic society believes childhood friends ' friendship doesn't exist between a boy and girl because to them they're destined to be married couple 🙄— and romance doesn't exist between same-sex friends because to them it's impossible and "unnatural"😑...when it could be the OTHER way around. It was really rare but still refreshing to see that in a Pricefield story. I hope Hollywood take a lot of notes from Max and Chloe's relationship.
My favorite trope like this is totally enemies to lovers but I LOVE pricefield's friends to lovers. I've said in different posts before but them being friends to lovers is like... a huge part of what makes them them to me. I've read fic where they aren't but overall I think they work best as FtL.
It just makes the most sense for their character growth. Max's inaction caused her to lose her best friend and now she has to act to not lose her forever. Chloe has forgotten who she was when her father died but with Max back in her life she begins to remember who she really is again. They were always apart of each other and always will be and I love that for them.
We totally need more Friends to Lovers in all media. It can be such a good trope but half the time they want to add it to a love triangle and that just sucks. I want more lesbian rom-coms with FtL. Give it to me
