Tips for Spn Artists posting on Tumblr 😄👍🏻
I see a lot of new artists posting Spn art and it can be a struggle to get your art out there. Or you might be new to Tumblr and not sure how best to put yourself forward.
I post Spn art and do a lot of bangs when my health permits. And I have picked up some tips that I have found helpful for posting art tumblr 😄 so I thought I would share.
Please feel free to take any of these points or leave them as suits you!
✨Personalise your header and icon. Bots will often make posts with popular tags and stolen art, to try and gain followers before throwing out the spam links, but some clues the account is a bot is not having personalised headers and icons, not having a long history of posts (more than a few days), and not talking about their art or fandom. So make sure you don’t look like a bot 😄
✨Interact with accounts you enjoy. Like, comment and reblog your favourite accounts and they will likely return the favour and you will get more followers. The first way your post gets noticed is by your followers. Interacting isn’t always easy if one is an introvert or doesn’t have much time for social media, but do what you can where you can.
✨If don’t have many followers then the next best thing is to use tags more. People follow key tags to find new posts from blogs they are not aware of. I recommend using the ‘Spn fanart’ tag on all your art posts. Also be sure to include: common ship names, the character names, and key words like: cute, funny, angst, angel, wings, etc 👍🏻 😄 this will help people find your posts, so be sure to tag consistently!
✨Make a personal art tag, it could be ‘your name art’ or something as wacky as you like. But tag all your art with it! If someone sees your art post out in the Spn fanart tags and they like it, they can click your art tag to see the rest of your art posts.
✨Don’t include links to outside webpages unless absolutely necessary. If you are posting for a bang, reblog the bang master post for the story which has the links to ao3, but then make your own art post and only link to the tumblr master post. Tumblr often hides posts with links to outside webpages (so that the porn bots sending you to spam websites get minimised, but unfortunately this also minimises links to ao3 or shops 😔). Links to another post inside of tumblr are ok tho! So to keep your art post from being hidden from searches, only link back to the master tumblr post with the story info. If people want to read the story they can follow the ao3 link from there. But it’s better that they actually get to see your art (the ‘advert’ for the story) in the first place so that they know it exists!
Also keep this info in mind if you are linking to your shop or your other socials. Your direct followers will see your shop posts but because of the external links the post might be hidden from searches. Consider doing a mix of posts with direct shop links and ones that get the info out there but link back to a pinned tumblr post or bio post with the outside link.
✨Don’t crowd your art. Many people view tumblr on mobile so your pictures will look small. People can’t really see the details if you put 2 images side by side. Put one image on each line and consider making some cropped images to show close up details of your favourite bits. You need to catch people as they are quickly scrolling past, so be sure that you make it easy for them to see what you are offering.
✨And finally don’t be afraid to do reblogs. It isn’t rude to reblog your own work, it’s helpful. Dashboards can get very busy and even if people follow you, your post might be burried a long way down if they don’t get back online multiple times a day. Reblogs will give them a chance to see what they missed. As long as you are not posting on the hour every hour, most people appreciate 2 or 3 reblogs at different times to save them having to scrolled back for days! 😄 and don’t forget that tumblr is multinational. Time zone reblogs can be helpful.
✨oh I forgot one more thing! Don’t put yourself down! No piece of art is perfect! Ever! But Michelangelo doesn’t start off by apologising that the statue of David is out of proportion. And neither should you! Let your work shine where it shines and don’t bury it in put-downs before you even give others the chance to enjoy its triumphs! You deserve better and so do they!
Those are the main points my friends. If you have any other helpful tips that you want to share, feel free to reblog this and add on points. We were all new to this hellsite (affectionate) at some point. And life is already hard for us struggling artists so whatever we can do to help each other is a good thing 💛
Stay awesome my friends, and happy Arting 🙌🏼😄

Baker’s Dozen
Fandom: Star Wars - The Clone Wars // Medieval Fantasy AU
Pairing: Captain Rex x baker!reader
Content: fluff, first meeting, pastries
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1,871
A/N: This is my first time writing for Rex so I’m not sure if I’ve got his characterisation down, especially as this is a medieval AU. Art used of medieval Rex in the header image is by Jake Bartok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You had been surprised when you first met Captain Rex. The cold, winter sun glinted upon shining plate armour as he walked through the city market, wet mud splashed and squelched under his boots, that marked his silver greaves with specks of brown dirt. At the time, you didn’t know who he was, only that he was part of the King’s Guard due to the blue markings upon his armour, as well as the billowing white cape that blew gently with the wind behind him.
Two young boys had run across his path, chasing each other with twigs, pretending that they were great warriors sparring upon a battle field. You saw how Rex stopped to allow them to pass, the visor of his helmet shifting to watch them play. His shoulders gently shook as you realised the real warrior had found amusement in the innocence of youth.
You shook your head at the scene, surprised by the kind, human reaction Rex displayed. You’d expected a King’s Guard to be more… high strung. You turned back to your bakery stall, letting the warm moment you’d witnessed brighten your mood as you bent down to lift out a fresh batch of bread to replenish your stock. As you raised your head, you noticed the shadow that now loomed there over your stall.
Raising yourself up to greet your customer, your eyes travelled the length of their torso before you saw their face. It was that shiny plate armour: silver thigh guards and a codpiece peeking through under black leather faulds with deep blue trimmings; leather belts and pouches strapped about his waist where the metal of his breastplate began. The said breastplate was stylised to represent the toned flesh that resided underneath. On his right shoulder sat a curved pauldron, shiny metal marked with sapphire blue paint. Too were marked his vambraces and rembraces, in perfect symmetry, aside from the other pauldron which sat on his right shoulder, with leather strapping across his upper torso to keep it in place. The pauldron was rather oddly shaped, 3 sides of it planed at soft angles with each other to fit over the shoulder and too it was painted that dark sapphire blue. Finally, there was the helmet. Much like the rest of his armour, it shone brilliantly; silver metal that was marked with that blue paint around the T-shaped eye hole in his visor. Specifically there were two pointed, somewhat triangular shaped painted above the eye slit. You did not know what they meant, but you had not seen them worn by anyone in the King’s Guard, or even any knight for that matter. He was, you thought, stunning. You hadn’t even seen his face.
And then he removed his helmet. His skin was the same golden brown as your perfectly baked pastries. It was a bit of an odd comparison to make, but with your pastries sitting on the stall between the two of you, it was hard not to make the link. It blended brilliantly with the bright blonde colour of his short, cropped hair, that looked so silky and soft upon his head. His face itself was made of sharp curves and accents, coming together smoothly; he was truly one of the most handsome men you’d ever seen. And his eyes. Oh, his eyes. They were like the cherry on top of the cake. A glimmering amber that met your own gaze and shone with intensity and confidence.
You felt like you had been staring at him longer than you should have. If he noticed, however, he did not bring it up. It was either that or time slowed down, as distracted by his golden appearance as you were, allowing you the precious seconds to take in his presence before he noticed. Whatever the case, time truly caught up with you and sent you plunging headfirst into reality as he spoke.
“Ah, good day.”
His voice was as smooth as butter, even with the slight hesitation at the start. That is, the hesitation, what really surprised you. It was something so small, so insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but the nervousness present in his hesitation as he began to speak to you was something you’d never expected from a knight. You’d expected him to be confident, being a man a far higher standing than you. The hesitation and nervousness made you realise in an instant that the King’s Guard before you was too just another human, not something to be feared.
So, in response to his soft spoken, nervous greeting you offered a warm, friendly smile in return. “Good day to you too.”
The short conversation with the knight left you near forgetting your job.
“What can I help you with?”
A deep, considerate rumble emerged from the man as his eyes scanned the stall for a moment, before he offered, with lightly raised brows, “What would you recommend?”
You were somewhat stumped for a moment, considering what a knight, a King’s Guard even, would want from your bakery stall. With unsureity you pointed to the loaves of bread first, “Well, I’ve got many delicious loaves, of varying grains.” You realised as you finished the sentence that the man, with a position such as his would likely have easy access to bread, so you sputtered out quickly before the humiliation hit home, “Or, perhaps you’d fancy one - or some! - of my pastries.” You smiled widely, toothily and leant against the table before you, trying to nonchalantly brush off your embarrassment.
The knight smiled, soft dimples at the corners of his mouth emerged with the movement, you noticed. He dipped his head in approval, the words he spoke gentle, “A pastry sounds great.”
You gave another flick over of the knight with your eyes, as you ponder what sort of pastry he would like. Initially you would have pegged him as a savoury person, but even in the short moments speaking with him, you began to wonder if he favoured sweet treats.
Hesitantly, you pointed to one of the croissants at the front, decorated with white icing and pink raspberry flavoured sprinkles. It’s not something you’d expect a knight to like, or to even wish to be seen eating, but you pointed it out anyway, “This raspberry croissant is one of my favourites, I’d really recommend it.”
His caramel hues flicked towards it, narrowing for a moment before he bobbed his head in approval once more, “I’ll try it, how much?”
Your eyebrows rose, surprised that he did not refuse and go for a savoury pastry or… anything more dignified for his knightly self. So you stumbled out your words, “Oh, that’ll… that’ll be 5 copper pieces.”
He tilted his head, sunlight shifting over his golden features and silver armour, “5 copper?” You nodded in response, moving to take out a paper bag and wrap up the sweet pastry.
“How about 1 silver?”
You did a double take, nearly dropping the pastry in your hands as you turned to give him a look of bewilderment; 1 silver was well over the amount that you were charging. You weren’t the poorest person in the city, but you were far from the richest. 1 silver would’ve certainly make things a little less tight for you. But, you were honourable, you wouldn’t take that money, there was no reason for him to overpay you that much.
“No, that’s way too much.”
The knight looked a little stumped, eyes flicking between you and the pastry you were packing away for him. Realisation hit you.
Putting a hand on your hip, a smile teased your lips, as you asked the man, “You only brought silver coins, didn’t you?”
He nodded quickly, awkwardly, before blurting out, “Things tend to cost more around the palace.”
You chuckled softly, ignoring the twist in your stomach that made you falter in awe that you were truly speaking to a man who knew the king personally. Thus, with a slight more squeak to your voice than usual, you replied, “I can see that. Unfortunately I don’t have enough copper to make up the difference so…-“
“Just take the silver, it’s my own mistake.”
You shook your head at him, “No, no, I have something else in mind.”
He paused, lips slightly parted and eyes wide, looking at you to save this awkward situation.
You took out your notebook, resting it against the counter as you picked up your writing charcoal and scribbled down the mathematics. “So, 5 copper for the pastry. If you come back for… hmm… 19 more days, to get another pastry, then you get your money’s worth.”
You smiled up to him, watching his features contort from worry to amusement. He grinned at you, dimples emerging and the corner’s of his eyes crinkling, “Very smart, Miss...” He trailed off, before shaking his head lightly and offering you a sheepish smile, “Sorry, what’s your name? It was impolite of me not to ask sooner.”
You shrugged lightly, handing the pastry all wrapped up over to him, noticing how your fingers gently brushed with his, then telling him your name with a soft tone to your voice. You then looked to your notebook for a second, whilst the knight slowly unwraps the pastry then and there, not bothering to move away from your stall. So you lightly cleared your throat, asking “Excuse me, but what’s *your* name? Just so I can keep track of how many pastries I owe you!”
He stops unwrapping the pastry, lifting his gaze so it met yours, caramel eyes sparking with mirth, “The name’s Rex, Captain Rex.”
This man was really good at surprising you, which thus caused you to blurt out, “You’re *the* Captain Rex? The Captain of the King’s Guard?”
He so humbly nodded, after lifting the pastry to his lips and taking a bite. After a moment, he offered another smile, kind-hearted and with a twinkle of pride. “Yes, I am. And, I must say,” he continued, “I am looking forward to returning tomorrow and the day after, if your goods are able to live up to this one.”
Your cheeks heated softly at his words, as you called back in return, “I am looking forward to it too!”
Rex held up to his word, returning the next day, with you giving him a new pastry to try. The day after, he returned again. And again. Soon, those days that were promised for him to return ended. But where it ended, something new sprouted and replaced it. Something that drew you even closer to Captain Rex of the King’s Guard.
After so much time, however, you never forgot that first meeting. If not for his surprising attitude and demeanour from under that helm… well, then you would not find yourself waking up for a long day as the royal baker, preparing delicious goods for a whole court. And in turn, you would not find yourself being dragged back into the warmth of your bed by two muscular, golden toned arms, Rex’s nose then nuzzling into your neck and his pale blonde hair, as short as it was, tickling your cheek, before you felt soft, loving kisses pepper your skin.

At long last, I've finally finished a new book! And it's actually not a fanfic this time! This is a bind of Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. This was supposed to be my fourth book for Binderary, but I didn't finish it in time. Procrastination's a bitch. Fun fact: the first thing I ever bound was a public domain short story called The Machine Stops, but since it was the first it is...not a good skill showcase. This one is so much better. More pics and process talk under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Close-up of the cover, and a pic of the spine. The blue bits are cardstock, and brown ones are faux leather left over from when I bound Pray for Us, Icarus. The images and author's name are in black embossing ink. Something weird happened with the texture on these--the author's name came out nice and smooth and solid like always, but the stamped images have a bumpy texture to them and some leather visible through the powder. They were done with rubber stamps on an ink pad and the text was done with an embossing pen, so I think it's a difference in the ink. It's a nice texture though, so I don't mind. I had originally thought to put the title on the front, but I really liked both stamps and I like how it came out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top view and endpaper. I'm really pleased with how the case fits; that's been something I struggle with on a lot of projects and I think I'm finally getting it down. The endpapers are a floretine print that I bought from Hollander's and cut to size. They got a little wrinkled when I cased in, especially in the back. It's my first time working with this kind of paper and I used too much glue. I also tried stitching them to the text block this time, but I don't think I'll bother with that again. I didn't like how flimsy the single-sheet signature felt next to the thicker ones in the text block. Fun fact for those who've seen an adaptation of this story but not actually read it: there is actually no hot air balloon in the book, even though it's in all the adaptations. There was a movie made in the 1950s which added the balloon and it's been in every version since then.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title page and chapter header. I've been saying for a while that I wanted to up my title page game, and I really love how this looks. The image here is a free vector pulled from Seekpng.com. It's the same image on both pages, the one on the chapter header is just smaller and in gray instead of black. I've also chosen a name for my bindery, largely because other people had names for theirs and I thought it was cool and wanted my own. It's Paper Snake Press, you can see it at the bottom of the text. I want a logo too but haven't gotten around to making one yet. 2d art is, uh. Still not a strength for me.
The text I used was pulled from Project Gutenberg. Typesetting it was and interesting experience, surprisingly different from typesetting fic. When I do fic I keep the editing very light, just really obvious things like misspelled characters' names and quotation marks that are flipped the wrong way, but it always needs something. This one didn't need any of that, which was nice. It also has way longer sentences and paragraphs than fic, and I thought that might be a product of its age, that writers just wrote longer sentences and were more verbose in 1873 than they are now. But then this week I started working on another fic that has the same features, from someone I've suspected for a while is a published author, so I wonder if it's actually a professional author thing instead of a shift in reading tastes over time. I'm not really going anywhere with this speculation, I just thought it was interesting.
I have two more works-in-progress printed and waiting. One is an author copy and just needs casing in, the other's in a halfway stage and has a lot to be done, so it might be a bit before I have more books to post. But there's a whole stack of things I've typeset that I'm waiting to print, so there are good things coming.

In case someone's wondering what I'm up to lately, I'm almost finished with my new side-blog, dedicated only for my own art and oc shenanigans. :)))
Tumblr media
I'm really glad I've found this theme, because I managed to get an old-school fansite vibe from early 2000s I really wanted. + TCW/TBB/RepComm categories are finished, need some fixing with the hyperlinks being out-of-place. + Touken Ranbu still needs a header image (like the one you see with fox and fives) and a list. + Planning to make a resource page for useful artistic/writer stuff but that's not on my priority list right now. + Every one of my OC will get a separate masterlist inside the "MY OCS" category!!! So when I publish this site, at least Deadshot's and Lily's bio will be finished!
Tumblr media
The pictures are placeholder images right now, you will have to tap/click them to access to the masterlists. When I'm done with each, the banners will show the portraits of the characters. So yeah. I'm working on stuff. :))) I hope I'll see you there too when I'm finally able to publish the site!

Artist Interview
Happy Boxing Day! I was tagged by @you-are-so-much-better-than-that in this artist interview.
1. Do you post on AO3? If so, how many works do you have on AO3? If not, where do you post?
I do post on AO3 as Suzy_Queue. I have two art galleries there, one for general art and one for Kinktober 2022.
2. What is your total art count?
If you count art done for other people's stories, headers for my own stories, and Gallacrafts pieces, it's around 150.
3. What are your top 5 pieces by likes/kudos?
I use this cool website to get my full Tumblr stats. According to them:
Tumblr media
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! Although I'm not the fastest at it.
5. What is your current fandom, and what was the first fandom you drew for?
Currently, it's Gallavich all the way. The first fandom I remember drawing for was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, making my own comics. (they were 7th-grade-girl bad).
6. Have you ever received hate on any art?
Nope, people are very supportive, even on pieces that I know aren't that great.
7. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t drawn for yet but want to?
I can't really think of any.
8. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
The one that has lived in my brain for the longest part of my life is Han/Leia.
9. Do you draw outside of fandom?
Yeah! I was an art major in college. I've been a professional artist for 20 years and have created art for book covers, movie posters, album covers, logos. I go to figure drawing sessions at a local art school and am in a nature journaling group. I've displayed my horror art at conventions around the country.
10. What’s the an art piece you’ve drawn that came out completely differently than you expected?
This was the first piece I ever drew on a tablet with a pressure-sensitive pen. It was an experiment to learn the tools. I had no idea how it would look, and it turned out all right.
Tumblr media
11. Do you draw smut?
Yep! There's some smut in this gallery.
12. Have you ever had any of your art stolen or copied?
Not that I know of.
13. Have you ever collaborated on a piece?
I've created art for stories working with the author, but I've never co-drawn a piece of art. Unless you count playing Exquisite Corpse with my children.
14. What’s an idea you have that you have yet to draw?
Oh, I have a lot. The one I think about most is a picture of Ian and Mickey in a lineup at jail, looking disheveled, hung over, and completely in love.
15. What are your drawing strengths?
I like my compositions a lot, the flow of items throughout the picture. I feel like I'm good at drawing what I see in a realistic way, whether it's a photo or real life.
16. What are your drawing weaknesses?
Drawing from memory/imagination. I have to have reference photos of what I'm doing or I go off the rails. I need to develop more trust in my own style and lean into weird proportions and my own skewed vision.
17. What’s your favorite art piece you’ve drawn?
I'm quite partial to this book cover art I did. It's spray paint, pastel, and acrylic. It's about 4 feet tall.
Tumblr media
18. What is one thing you’d like to tell people about your art that they might not know?
Just because I've been doing it for a while doesn't mean I'm not still learning every day.
19. What inspires or motivates you to create for fandom?
I have a lot of emotional energy churning below the surface. Creating art and fics helps get it out. It's a much more positive outlet than letting it brew.
20. And finally, can you describe your process a little? Do you have a favorite place to draw? Do you play something in the background? Do you do research or just go for it? Give us a little insight.
I have a basement office where I write and draw. I bought a new table this year which I absolutely love. I do most of my creative work between 9-11 pm after the rest of my family has gone to bed. I do love music and play it a lot while I draw.
I research a ton. I spend a lot of time making photo compositions for every piece I draw, which are collages of body parts and other images.
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for the tag for this interview!

ID. A digital banner that reads "FTH offerings" in white lettered, block font, with the name "Isabelle Hemlock" in white cursive just above it and to the left. The words are imposed over a collage of some various pieces of my art, from left to right: Claudia, Armand, and Louis from IWTV, Oluwande from OFMD, and Will from Stranger Things. END ID.
The browsing period for @fandomtrumpshate went live yesterday! I had some fun making some round up posts for the IWTV, OFMD, and Stranger Things fandom, but figured I'd make an individual post for my own offering before the bidding starts on Wednesday, the 1st of March.
I'm personally offering a fic for the three fandoms listed above, up to 25k depending on the final bid amount, and if interested you can check out my ao3 page here (filtered to just written works).
I made a collage of some my art with the post header, but if you'd like to see them full sized (and image descriptions) you can find them here:
Claudia • Armand • Louis • Oluwande • Will
For more, you can also browse the tags in my pinned post, and/or find some of them on my ao3 page as well (filtered to just show fanarts). I'm comfortable working up to an E rating and NSFW themed :)
If you'd like to make a bid, please check out my FTH listing page here.

Hey guys! Long time no speak!
I recently wrote this article for ChristopherCant.com and for my site SelfemployedArtist.com, and wanted to share it here. I hope you guys are ok, and this is useful in some way.
Tumblr media
AI is coming: Future-Proofing your Art career
Header image generated with AI, in a terrible low-res - sorry!
I have been giving a lot of thought recently to the stability of my future as a digital painter - and by extension the futures of all digital artists, and even all creatives.
If you’ve been paying attention to the conversations currently happening in digital artists circles, you’ll know that AI has recently taken over all discussion.
And for good reason - AI is slowly but surely going to cause a massive shake-up across multiple industries.
A lot of the conversations centre around claims that AI art lacks the soul and intrigue of human-made art; there are disputes over the legality of the way these models were trained and whether the outputs can be copyrighted, and a lot of concern over users deliberately imitating famous artists when generating images.  The conversation even stretches as far as debating human rights.
But these aren’t really the things I want to discuss today; other people are tackling these issues much better than I’m able. I hope their efforts slow it down enough to give us time to properly prepare, and grant us legal protections when it does arrive.
I want to talk about the impact it will have on our careers.  I want to figure out how the markets for digital art might change, and be prepared for it.  I want to find solutions.
A massive shift is coming sooner or later, and I want us all to get through it fine.
What is this ‘AI art' stuff?
To many of you this will be obvious, but for those of you just learning about this: by AI I’m referring to image creation AI models such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E, that are able to generate images based on text prompts.
The outputs are unpredictable and almost always require some sort of human post-processing, but the rate at which these AI models are being improved is so fast that it is highly likely that they will soon overcome their shortcomings. Already they can occasionally generate incredible images, sometimes even on-par with world-class digital artists.
Tumblr media
How will these AI’s impact digital artists?
I’d be surprised if the supply of all digital media didn’t increase massively over the next few years, as both companies and individuals use AI to create all sorts of things.
Companies will need less employees to produce the same products, many people will use AI to shorten their journey to becoming competitive in the creative markets, and even more people will just use AI to create media for their own personal consumption.
The supply of digital content is simply going to go way, way up, and I don’t think demand will go up at anywhere near the same rate; we are already spoiled for choice.  I don’t think it's silly to expect that the average value of art and other creative pursuits like writing is simply going to fall as AI saturates the markets.
In order to generate an income, I think digital artists are going to be forced through something of a paradigm shift in how they approach their careers.
How can digital artists prepare for these events?
In order to prepare myself for this, I’m trying to identify which markets will get stronger, and which will get weaker.  I’m certainly not announcing the death of digital art or anything like that; I'm just trying to read the room and make sure I don't set myself up to fail, as a digital painter.
For the last couple of decades digital artists have been in greater and greater demand by the entertainment industry, and I think that particular pendulum is finally slowing down.
Freelancing as a digital painter won't disappear, but I do think it might get less lucrative, and will inevitably become a smaller portion of my income as I find other ways to create an income.
I should acknowledge that perhaps some sort of legislation around AI will appear, enforcing stricter regulations that will stop it from flooding the creative markets.  Perhaps AI art will never be able to be copyrighted or will be found to infringe on the rights of all the artists it learned from, so companies will be too scared of the ramifications of using it.
But I really can’t see that happening - or, even if legislation does appear, it being successful - so I’m not willing to bet the future on it.
As far as I can see, there are a few different paths you could choose to go down.  I put most of this into words to help myself figure out what direction I should be taking my own career.  Bearing in mind that I could be completely incorrect about where the future of AI is going, these are the potential solutions I’ve thought out:
Solution 1: Utilise AI in your own art
This one is pretty obvious, and it’s undoubtedly what the entertainment industry will expect of its artists.
You stay a visual artist, but evolve your process as the technology evolves. Join with the AI, and use it in your workflow - feed it text descriptions, feed it your sketches, paint over its outputs, etc.  Just like some did with incorporating photos and painting over 3D models in their digital paintings, this is simply the next step in the same path toward efficient image creation.
This sort of path suits those that just want a great end result, and are not too fussed about the process they use.  I think the danger in this approach is that you risk becoming redundant if AI gets so good that it doesn't even need an artist to fix its mistakes anymore, but I’m not sure that’ll ever be a reality.
Either way, I expect these jobs to still be about as competitive as becoming an in-house artist in the entertainment industry is today; companies won't need as many artists on-staff when they can use AI for 90% of the workload, but there will also be 10 times as many companies popping up looking for an artist to work with their AI outputs.
Tumblr media
Solution 2: Supplement your art with other AI mediums
AI is great at doing a single task very efficiently so, unfortunately, specialists are the ones who get automated - if you perform like a robot, you’ll get replaced by one - and digital painters are no different.
So perhaps instead of specialising in digital art, you use AI to diversify your creative mediums.  AI isn't only going to make digital art easier to make, it'll also make writing, music, video and code easier to make, among a bunch more things.
You could build much larger projects than just individual pieces of visual art, if you learn how to use AI to create supplementary media and learn how to polish it all into a finished product.  Animations, comic books, card games and illustrated novels all become much easier with AI assistants to help you.  Partnered with AI, individuals might even be able to create feature-length films and massive videogames completely independently.
With AI the manpower needed to make big entertainment products goes down, so small indie teams and maybe even solo creators will have as much creative potential as giant studios.
Solution 3: Broaden your skillset beyond the visual art market, and build your own niche.
If you don't particularly want to use AI to create, it isn't just AI that will be improving our potential as creatives - other software, digital tools and platforms are becoming much easier to use year-on-year, and will allow a single person to achieve much more by themselves than ever before.
If you can combine your digital art skills with other complementary skills, you may be able to create projects that make you stand out from the pack, without even having to utilise AI at all, and without having to compete with those that do.
Find a way to combine your digital art with other skills to produce something new, something that other people simply aren’t doing.
Nowadays, between YouTube and blogs, you can teach yourself nearly any skill for free.
You can learn to make a professional website for yourself really easily with something like Squarespace or Wix, whereas not long ago you would have needed a web developer to make anything that looked good and worked well.
You can use social media tools to post on multiple platforms efficiently and analyse the performance of each post, when not long ago you would have needed a social media team for that level of automation and data.
Just for the art market, you can film, edit and sell video courses, schedule and host online mentoring, and sell merchandise via white-label print-on-demand companies, on a myriad of different platforms and services, all by yourself.  New tools show up weekly, and present opportunities to create unique businesses.
Many of these services are free to get started with, and have become so streamlined that each only takes a weekend to figure out.
For a couple of examples outside of the art market, you could combine your art with web design to create unique, bespoke websites for clients, or with writing to sell your own storybooks.
The options are quite broad and will only get broader; if you are prepared to widen up your skillset to learn some complementary skills, and combine your skill of digital painting with an unusual skillset to create a rare combination, you'll build yourself a niche where you barely have to compete with anyone, let alone AI.
Solution 4: Lean into your humanity, and traditional methods
One method to survive the coming technological disruption would be to deliberately do things with your art that an AI cannot do and, quite the opposite of embracing AI, choose to lean away from AI.
AI will probably always struggle to imitate the true humanity beneath the surface of a piece of art, so deliberately accentuate and show plenty of evidence that your art is made by a real person.
People who value human-made art will seek digital artists whose hand shows through in their work, who show their process, who speak about their work and share their insights and motivations.  They may even want proof that your work wasn’t made by AI.
Video content will probably be the best way to achieve a lot of this, and I’m pretty sure that even more so than it is today, it'll be very, very important to artists who paint and draw all of their work.
Record your painting process to accompany your finished pieces, and create YouTube videos to share your perspective as an artist.  Make sure that when someone finds your art online, they can easily tell it was painted by a person, not an algorithm.
I'm sure AI will eventually be able to imitate a painting process video, but until then it'll be a key way to differentiate human-made digital art from AI-made art.
You can also hand embellish all the prints that you sell, make a move towards painting in traditional media like acrylics over digital painting, and try selling your work face-to-facein local markets instead of global digital ones.  Importantly, build deeper, more personal relationships with the people that buy your art.
In my opinion, with this direction it would be best to focus on creating quality over quantity, as AI will be able to pump out quantity much easier than any human could.  Focus on creating the very best work you can, present it the most human way you can, and sell it in the most personal way you can.
Solution 5: Move toward teaching
Since AI will probably flood the commercial market with low cost art and a lot of newly entering artists utilising AI in their workflow, freelancing as a digital artist might become even less lucrative than it currently is today.
But things like the iPad and Procreate are putting digital art tools in more people's hands year on year, so plenty of people will still want to learn how to paint for fun.
These people will need to learn how to paint from someone.
Many people will start to use AI to try to create their dream game, film or business, and instead of hiring an artist, will want to learn the basics of digital painting so they can fix up their AI outputs and make them more consistent and appealing.
These people will also need to learn to paint from someone.
And they won't just want to learn the basics of digital painting, but also of writing, coding, web design, UI design, social media - everything that someone running a one-person-business that is being scaled through AI might want to learn.
People won't want to hire a professional to do these tasks for them when they could just use an AI for much cheaper and faster results, but they might be prepared to pay someone for a few hours of education to help them improve upon their AI’s outputs.
As an artist, you might already have some experience with a bunch of these skills, and be in a decent position to teach them to the flood of AI-utilising creatives that are about to be appearing.
This is probably pretty safe as a direction to take a digital painting career in, as people will always need teachers and I expect demand to increase as the internet grows.  Teaching online can also be quite lucrative, and there are many platforms designed to help make the process easier.
Tumblr media
What is my plan?
Perhaps hearing my personal plan will help some people make better sense of the above ideas.  I think most people will adopt a unique mix of all of the different solutions, and I am no different.
I love digital painting, and have resisted integrating photos and 3D models into my workflow simply because I find joy in the process of painting; knowing what I know about myself, I cannot really see myself changing for AI, so I doubt I’ll be integrating much AI into my art.
However, while I cant see myself using AI in my art, I'm not completely against using other AI tools to help build larger projects.
In early 2021 I was already messing about with AI tools for writing, and I’m in blogging groups in which some members have made websites and YouTube channels with 100% AI written content.  I don't think going 100% AI is quite my style, but I can see myself using it to help me create non-art content.
Diversifying my skillset outside of just art is luckily something I've already been working on, for similar reasons to AI.  A few years ago I could see that as more artists from the developing world join the global marketplace and work for lower rates than me, I would probably get priced out of the freelance market.  I began broadening my skillset, from just digital art into writing and web design.
My current strategy will be to combine my digital painting with my newer skills of writing and web design, to make unique websites that are hopefully educational, entertaining and inspiring.
This is the direction I have been heading, and plan to continue going in, broadening my skillset and trying to create a combination of skills that are very unique, allowing me to make things that other people just aren't making.
I’ll also show more of my humanity like solution 4 suggests, by displaying process videos alongside my artwork, writing more articles like this one, and making more video content to share my personality and opinions.
I’ve always known I should be putting out videos, and it was on my agenda to handle ‘someday’.  Now with AI appearing I’m going to have to make it a priority, and I think other digital artists would be smart to do something similar.
I’ll make sure the digital things I’m making today can also work in a physical format, like prints and books, to help create that human-to-human connection that some will seek.
Lastly, teaching is also something I've been exploring a little in the last couple of years, and I actively plan to make it a bigger proportion of my income going forward.  I'm even open to widening up what I teach past just digital painting, to some of the other skills that I'm learning.
Each of us is going to have to find their own way, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help each other
I originally wrote this article to give myself some clarity over what might be coming and how I could deal with it in my own life.  I decided to share it in the hope that it helps others out there that have been having similar thoughts, and perhaps jump-start those that might have been putting off thinking about these tricky subjects.
I’ll write more articles in the future with this theme of future-proofing your digital art career, as I think there is going to be a lot to learn going forward, and nearly as much to say.
Whatever happens, we are about to be living through historic times, and we should do our best to prepare our communities.

Contemporary Research into Previous UX/UI Designs - Major Project
I wanted to explore previous student's major projects in order to understand the final outcome and the process of developing the visual designs. I'm analysing UX/UI projects in particular because this is a medium that I will be focusing on in my own project. These are examples that were produced by students in 2021.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maggi Harper - Happy Astronaut
This is an app that focuses on bringing gamified wellbeing strategies to a young audience as a way to practice mental growth and well-being. The space theme brings an explorative experience for 3-8 year olds to literally take advantage of the space they are in by playing mission and activities that are tailored to each demographic. I really like the approach that's been made by Maggi in terms of the concept because it's a real-world matter that's been resolved by a gamified service that is aesthetically joyful to look at. There is a consistency with the visual graphics, which are fun and bright to satisfy the user. It would be cool to see the animation for this project because it could boost the project's tone and feel even more. Furthermore, the hand-drawn logo for the app adds a personable feeling that makes the product inviting for a young audience. The illustrations themselves also look and feel like they've been hand-drawn by a child; something that compliments the art style choice for this app.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katie Brown - Grow
This is a very different project in comparison to Happy Astronaut, in which the student has used social media and advertising to promote an app that persuades users to take more consideration of nature by creating a digital forest on the app. I can tell that this app I targeted to an older audience in comparison to Maggi's project because of the visual approach. I like the playfulness of the typography in the logo because it portrays the idea of growing through the thickness of the letters. The green compliments the sustainable aspect of the app's primary focus, and the colour has been used consistently in the app mockups. In addition, the cut-out aesthetic of the headers and some images brings a creative approach in the way the users reads about the subject matter. From looking at the bus stop board mockup, I believe that the layout of the visuals could've been more playful. Perhaps the white flowers could go across the top of the board so that there's no empty space on the right side. It would also portray the idea of nature being everywhere around us, and implying the brand's message involving the solidarity of our world's nature.
Conclusion
From my research into previous major projects that focus on UX/UI design, I can tell the difference between the target audience for each project by identifying the visual approaches that were made. This has also made me realise the importance of promoting the app; whether that's through a still campaign or a video, I need to sell the product in order to demonstrate my ability to produce a body of work and applying it within the necessary market place.

Final Project Artist Statement
Artist Statement
This color analysis/collage article header project was a way for us to make captivating article headers by using an already existing one, and making it our own. To begin this assignment I went browsing on The New York Times and The New Yorker websites to find an article that I thought had interesting, or eye grabbing cover art. I came across one that was about a new book, and I really liked the image of it. It’s simple and it looks as though it’s sketched, which immediately grabbed my eye. The color scheme is also appealing, which made it interesting to color grab in photoshop. After choosing this article header art, I took it over to photoshop to begin working on the color analysis portion of the project. To start, I added my guides, (I chose to do them at a half an inch in each direction to make it more complex.) Next, I began using the color selector tool to color grab all of the different colors in the piece. Although some of them were similar, it was amazing to me how many colors there are in a single image, even though they may look alike. After color grabbing all of the colors I could find, I began filling in all of the squares, rectangles, and triangles I had made using my guides and the drawing tool. While doing this, I made sure not to repeatedly make the squares solid colors. I wanted the piece to look complex and interesting, so I used as many colors as possible. It was also really cool to see my piece taking the shape of the real picture just by using shapes. Even though I was working with squares and triangles, I could see the figures in the image which I thought was super awesome. After I was finished with the color analysis, it was time to start collaging and really making it my own. For the most part, all I did was add shapes, and change the transparency of parts throughout my work. These two simple changes alone changed the image completely. When I was finished, I had two completely different pieces of art that only resembled each other, but were not the same. In conclusion, I really enjoyed working on this project. It was really interesting to be able to take someone else's art and make it my own, while using elements they incorporated, and adding my own twist. The color analysis portion of this project was tedious, but rewarding in the end, and the collaging part was really fun. I think this project taught me a lot about collaging and what it can do to a piece, as well as more about photoshop!

Book manuscript
Tumblr media
Industry-standard formatting practices to make sure your manuscript is professional. You can use the same book template, over and over. The good news is that it’s easy to set up the standard format for a manuscript, and once you get it right, you don’t have to re-learn it. Charge you more a lot more money to do formatting work you should have done. Not fix your formatting, and do a poor job editing as a result, or.Think you’re unprofessional and edit your book under that assumption. If you send in a manuscript that’s not formatted properly, your editor will do three things: It comes down to readability for the editor. If you don’t, your book will suffer, and you’re going to spend more money than you need to on editing. Which POD company should you use? Do you need to buy your own ISBN? How does a bookstore order your book when it’s published? When will you get your royalties? What is a proof copy? I can guide you through each step of this process, even including uploading the final files for printing, if desired.I’ll be honest: manuscript formatting is tedious and boring. Guidance Through the Process: included in all quotes Need your interior images edited to grayscale, checked for adequate resolution, cropped, enhanced, or otherwise modified? Want a logo to use as your very own publishing imprint? Planning to send out promotional postcards or put up flyers in your local bookstores? Let me know what you need and I will include it in your quote. Does not include hosting or domain fees, which are paid directly to the provider. Prefer using WordPress but can work with other providers. I can also format a book solely for ebook distribution, which will be a higher cost which depends on the state of the manuscript.ĭepending on the complexity of the site. There are several ways to convert a print layout to ebook and several ebook formats, which affects the price. If your manuscript has already been thoroughly edited but you want one final pair of eyes on the little details after it has been laid out for printing (either by me or someone else), this checks for basic spelling and punctuation errors, indentation and spacing inconsistencies, awkward page breaks, and any other typos in the text. Also checks for any major mistakes in content such as continuity errors and repetition, but is NOT a thorough critique of style or plot. Thorough read-through to analyze grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, as well as consistency in matters such as capitalization, hyphenation, italicization, etc. All custom created to match the theme and style of your book – no templates used!įull cover including front, back and spine, space for ISBN barcode, using stock images (charged separately) or copyright-free or client-provided artwork. However, as a general rule, you can expect the following ranges in pricing.įont selection, chapter headings, page numbering, margins, front and back matter, running headers, consistency in spacing and justification, table of contents, trim size selection, block quotes, footnotes, etc. My rate will take into consideration issues such as word count, degree of editing required, type of e-book chosen, if cover art is provided, if images are used within the text, if assistance in uploading files is needed, etc. Services can include any or all of those listed below, depending on your needs, and they don’t necessarily need to be contracted for all at once – although copyediting, if desired, should be the first step. I will create a customized package for you after learning more about your book (and seeing a sample chapter, if applicable) and your vision for it.
