I recently got a new job working as a researcher/cataloger for an auction house (I like it a lot :3!!) and I would say a good 60% of the time is just trying to decode an artist's signature on their works so that I can determine the sale price. Most of the time a lot of trouble comes down to five things:
No signature whatsoever
There's a signature but it's illegible/obscured (there is one artist who wrote their name in red and signed it on the reddish black part of their painting and i want to fight them)
There's a signature but it's a pseudonym
There's only the initials
The artists legibly wrote their name, but they are relatively new/didn't make that many pieces, so the value remains pretty low
All this to say: if you keep a record of your art or rewrite your name somewhere legible on the back of the canvas/paper/etc, you will spare the life of some poor sap trying to value it 50-100 years from now.
