Bart sees ghosts. And no, I don't mean that in the aspect of some sort of supernatural ability that only he has. I'm talking about his unique experience of being time-displaced.
From his time period of origin, his grandfather is dead, his friends are dead, all he has left are Meloni and Iris. Jenni is hardly ever in his time period despite being a few chronological months older than him.
His attachments to people are so different than what is "normal" because of this. He knows his grandfather doesn't live to see him be born let alone see Don grow up. Don died when he was an infant... And although Barry is alive and exists in the time period he now calls home, they rarely get to spend time together, and Bart knows that time will eventually come to an end.
Everyone that Bart knows in a way is a ghost to him, nothing more than a reflection of something that can only exist in those periods.
Like all his friends (Tim, Conner, Cassie, Grant, etc.) are long gone by the time he's born. The only reason they became friends is because he's been deliberately placed in that time. Then there's his mom. She doesn't even exist yet and she can't come back and forth to visit him or even stay in his time, and in a way he's forced to grieve the relationship he'll never have with her. So in a way he's so v alienated from his blood relatives in a way that the other flashfam members can't understand. The only person who can truly relate to the isolation from his birth family is Malcolm Thawne but he can't relate to the time displacement or how Bart chooses to navigate this strange displacement. So in a lot of ways as a Thawne he experiences this sort of curse where they are doomed to be isolated from people who would otherwise want to love them. Except he's isolated from them too bc the Thawnes' hatred of the Allens's keeps them from ever truly accepting him. So on top of time displacement AND age displacement he's both Thawne and Allen and neither Thawne nor Allen at the same time.
Especially if you look at the time Linda was ?erased? or disappeared from the timeline and he was the only one who remembered her. Like imagine how that shaped the way he thinks of people during this crucial time where his brain is developing.
His adolescent mind already has to function completely different from everyone in his physiological age group and now he has to either block out or accept the fact that no matter what time he exists in he will always have "ghosts".

The Thawne family is so interesting!
I’m rereading the Chain Lightning arc of The Flash comics and I’m realizing how similar Malcolm and Thad are in their upbringing.
Both are a part of a family dynamic in which they are not loved or considered family.
Both desired to be accepted by a family in which they could have belonged, but because of their hatred/rage/anger could not.
And they are both envious and hate their good twin, and are desirous of their life which is so much better than their own.
It happens not once! But twice in the same family!

I was doing some rereading and I think that Bart Allen acted more like a Thawne than an Allen at times when he was The Flash in The Flash: Fastest Man Alive. And particularly so when he was fighting Thad because he was tapping more into his anger and rage which are very explicitly associated with Thawnes in the comics.
It’s seen with Malcolm Thawne (Barry Allen’s twin brother), who began the Allen-Thawne feud and also created the Cobalt Blue gem due to the immense amount of rage and wrath he held:
Tumblr media
(The Flash (1987) #145)
It’s seen with Eobard, Thad, President Thawne, Meloni even states she had a desire to smother her father in his sleep (which is great and I support her), and generations of Thawnes who are able to tap into the power of the Cobalt Blue gem which is based in hatred.
This hatred with regard to Malcolm’s descendants is associated with the Thawne ideology and is a learned hatred, but I think interesting that his character also has instances of following this pattern and characteristic associated with Thawnes despite being raised as an Allen and as a hero. I also think it’s interesting because Bart’s character and writing surrounding on him has never personally touched on or associated him with Thawnes except for stating that his mother is a Thawne and that his grandfather, President Thawne, wanted to convert him to the Thawne side. Bart has never weighed in or commented on this half of his lineage.
But even despite that Bart doesn’t seem like he’s an exception to this pattern/characteristic associated with Thawnes because he also displays this intense rage too at times such as seen when he is The Flash. He breaks his knuckles on Thad’s face and when he sees the Black Flash, a certain sign of a speedster’s death, he actively tries to kill Thad. It is a kill or be killed situation, but typically heroes and Flashes specifically tend to stay away from killing. And similarly in Teen Titans Bart wants to get revenge on Thad after his death (and for context Thad has already died himself due to the fact he killed Bart), even despite this being a simulated version of Thad feels very Thawne like as well because he’s not just punishing this version of him, but is once again actively desires to kill him.
So while it does seem unlike Bart to give into rage or anger this intense it’s interesting to think that Bart also holds a tendency toward anger or rage at times that connects him back to the Thawnes and this prominent theme/characteristic associated with them with regard to his character, and is also ironically used against them.

So, Guy and Barry both had evil brothers introduced in the 1990s
I admit, I've never read anything with Cobalt Blue. I'd thought him extremely unpopular. I was surprised, when looking on DC fandom, that he only had 2 fewer appearances listed than Mace Gardner. Was also very surprised to see he showed up in Prime Earth (guess I was wrong about the unpopularity). I do not like his existence, myself.
I did read the Mace backstory. I did find the backstory with Guy quite good. I liked it. I didn't care for him coming back as a supervillain. Relatives as enemies just bores me 99% of the time these days.
So, what say you, oh people of Tumblr - do you like either of these characters or not?

Barry Allen, The Flash, is the Fastest Man Alive...isn’t he?
Son of convicted killer Henry Jay Allen and his wife, Nora Thompson, Barry and his twin brother, Malcolm, grew up in the Keystone-Central Metro Area. Barry went to live with family friend Joe West and his partner Ira while Malcolm was adopted by their mother’s cousin, Charlene and her husband Hugo Thawne, going so far as to change his last name to Thawne as well. Despite being separated at home, the two continued attending school together, often with Joe’s biological son Daniel tagging along with the older boys (Joe and Ira’s other adopted child, Iris, never wanted to admit she had a crush on a boy she lived with).
Barry, Mal, and Danny would often spend their time together goofing and trading the same few old issues of All-Flash between the three of them. Barry always thought Jay Garrick looked like their dad, but Mal and Danny always thought that was just Barry projecting his own need for Henry to be innocent onto a fictional character.
As adults, they all drifted apart. Barry left for school, coming back to Keystone-Central to work as a CSI; Mal got a job as a janitor while trying to get his “Cobalt Blue” fantasy series off the ground; and Danny struggled with addiction issues and trouble with the law, driving a wedge between him and his father. On a rare night when all three were free, the brother met for drinks and celebrated Nora’s birthday.
Then, a bolt of lightning--seemingly the result of a test at the new STAR facility downtown--destroyed a window and struck the three of them.Variously blessed or cursed with superhuman speed via a semi-mystical “Speed Force” that would come to transform all of Keystone-Central into a hotbed of metahuman activity, Barry stole the name of his favorite fictional speedster and his brothers agreed. Thus...the Flash was born. All three of them: Red, Blue, and Gold.
Things were good for a time. They got their own museum. Iris moved back home and she and Barry got together. They started taking care of Daniel’s kid, Wally, as Daniel started taking steps to get clean. Malcolm finally felt able to tackle everything he didn’t feel like he had time for.
But nothing lasts forever, especially at the speed of light. Years after the fact, Wally would remember his dad and his uncles as the greatest heroes he ever knew. He tried not to think about what happened after. What Mal did...what his father did...how they lost Barry.
Even when the world was ending, seeing his Uncle Barry again was the hardest part...knowing the Flash was never going home...
