Fun Facts behind TTEOTM!
Creative Team
Till the End of the Moon is the second TV drama produced by newcomer Otters Studio (獭獭文化), which was originally set up for dangai/BL drama Immortality (皓衣行), also featuring Luo Yunxi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hangzhou-based Otters Studio is a subsidiary of Nanpai Entertainment (南派泛娱), the company owned by Kenneth Xu (aka “Third Uncle" 南派三叔). Xu is best known as the novelist and screenwriter behind "Grave Robbers' Chronicles" (盗墓笔记).
A big part of TTEOTM's core creative team also worked on Immortality. And a lot of the Immortality team came from Ashes of Love (2018) with Luo Yunxi. This includes...
He Fang (Screenwriter) - Immortality
Luo Xuan (Screenwriter & Associate Producer) - Immortality
Huang Wei (Costume Designer) - Immortality
Guan Dazhou (Music Director) - Immortality
Wang Yirong (Lead Producer) - Immortality
Wang Haiqi (B Unit Director & Action Director) - Immortality & Ashes of Love
Tsang Mingfai (Makeup Designer) - Immortality & Ashes of Love
Shen Xufei (Special Effects Director) - Immortality & Ashes of Love
Hua Tian World Concept - Immortality & Ashes of Love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wang Haiqi was the stunt coordinator who trained Luo Yunxi in Ashes of Love
Part of the creative team came from Huanyu (Bai Lu's management company, aka the production company of Yanxi Palace). This includes award-winning art director Luan Hexin, Huang Xinyao (Yue Fuya) and Liu Min (Nan'an).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the second time Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu have paired up in a drama. They previously played a couple in modern workplace romance Love is Sweet (2020). Bai Lu expressed interest publicly in pairing up with LYX again in a costume drama numerous times.
Tumblr media
In addition, a number of Love is Sweet actors have minor roles or cameos in TTEOTM:
Zhao Yuanyuan (Qiao Na aka Yuan Shuai's colleague who has a crush on him) plays the Moon Goddess
Cheng Chang (Jiang Jun's father) plays Ye Xiwu's father
Deng Jinghong (Jiang Jun and Yuan Shuai's shady client) plays Ye Xiwu's brother Ye Zeyu
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The popularity of TTEOTM has generated renewed interest in Love is Sweet on iQiyi. In the first half of 2023, Love is Sweet is ranked #5 on Yunhe's "old/classic drama" list, receiving 360M views (10M views/episode), equivalent to airing a new medium-budget drama.
Two actors in Ashes of Love also have minor roles in TTEOTM:
Wang Yifei (Shuihe aka peacock princess in Ashes of Love) plays the Devil God's lieutenant Siying
He Zhonghua (Heavenly Emperor aka Runyu's father) plays the King of Sheng, again terrorizing Luo Yunxi's childhood
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition, a number of TTEOTM actors play minor roles in the unaired Immortality:
Huang Yunyun (Yue Yingxin) plays Song Qiutong
Zheng Guolin (Qu Xuanzi aka Susu's father) plays Jiangxi
Huang Haibing (Zhaoyou) plays Nangong Zhangying
He Zhonghua (King of Sheng) plays Nangong Liu
Geng Yeting (Ye Qingyu) plays an unknown role
Production
The source novel (黑月光拿稳BE剧本) was optioned by Otter before it was complete due to strong early hype around the IP and interesting characters & premise. It's one of the top 10 most-saved web novels of that genre on the Jinjiang platform. Its title literally translates to "black moonlight is guaranteed a bad ending screenplay".
The screenplay was written for 40 episodes, which was edited into 50 episodes of probably 45 mins each. The original plan (based on governmental records) was to air 34 episodes as part 1 and 16 episodes as part 2. However, the NRTA (Chinese government agency that regulates TV) closed the loophole around airing two seasons back to back early this year, which is why TTEOTM was edited back down to 40 episodes of 55 mins each so that it could air in one go.
TTEOTM changed its Chinese title twice. It was originally named 月照千峰为一人 (The moon shines for one person). It was then renamed to 长月无烬 (long moon without Jin/ember, also a pun for without limit or endless), which is the official publication name proposed by fans of the web novel. Right before the booting ceremony, it was renamed 长月烬明 likely for auspicious reasons (especially after the LYX accident and Immortality not airing)
Some keen netizens have noticed that if you break apart the characters of its Chinese title, 长月烬明, it becomes 长月火尽日月, which literally means....
长月 (long moon) - how people refer to the drama, in its short form
火 (fire) - Chinese internet lingo for explosive or popular
尽日月 (to the end of sun and moon)
(Gotta give one to Chinese people for coming up with auspicious names)
Luo Yunxi was injured right before production began when filming his final scene in Light Chaser Rescue. He got punched in the mouth by a costar which required emergency surgery and left a scar on the top left corner of his mouth. Production was delayed as a result. Bai Lu had to film her solo scenes first starting Oct 19, 2021. The booting ceremony took place on Nov 6, 2021 after Luo Yunxi joined the set.
Luo Yunxi was the first actor to be cast, according to an interview with the producer. It is rumored that he might have even picked which novel to adapt as Otter initially optioned both "Black Moonlight" and "Black Lotus Casebook". Bai Lu is also the "only choice" for Li Susu according to Yu Zheng.
Yin Tao (Who Rules The world, Love & Redemption, and Ancient Love Poetry) was originally considered for director, but he worked on the Blood of Youth instead. In the end they went with Kuk Kok Leung, an award-winning veteran TVB director who has adapted 7 out of 8 Jin Yong novels. One of the Cantonese songs Luo Yunxi kept singing on set is the OST of the 1983 Condor Heroes where Kuk served as Assistant Director.
Sun Zhenni (Pianran) and Zhao Shiyi (Fuyu) won their roles through open casting call. Sun Zhenni was a big fan of Bai Lu, and the two became close friends during the shoot. She is 1/4 German Jewish through her paternal grandmother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chen Duling (Ye Bingchang / Tian Huan) briefly dated Xichao Wang (who plays Jing Mie, the demon god's other lieutenant). They were apparently introduced by Yu Zheng (boss of Bai Lu's studio).
Luo Yunxi and Sun Zhenni are the only actors who dubbed themselves in the drama. Bai Lu is dubbed by Duan Yixuan, who is also the voice behind Linglong in Love & Redemption.
This is the second time Luo Yunxi plays a dragon god (Runyu is the first). This is also the second time Bai Lu plays a character who leaps off the tower to her death in a costume drama.
Post-production was rumored to be delayed and then rushed due to a number of reasons, including covid which hit the special effects team hard and the last minute change of the 40-episode rule.
Promotion
During the premiere day, celebrities posted on Weibo to promote the drama in support of Luo Yunxi (usually actors only ask for this favor when it's a really important project to their career): Huang Xiaoming, Tan Songyun, Wu Jingyan, Chen Yuqi, Cheng Xiao, Victoria Song, Zhang Ruonan, Huang Xuan, Chen Yao. The most noteworthy ones were Chen Xiao (whose drama was also opening on the same day) and EDG (the esports team that LYX supports)

Worldbuilding: A Problem Like Nurhaci
In retrospect I should have known the guy renowned as the founding ancestor of the Qing/Manchu Dynasty wouldn’t be put off by a few measly demon tigers. Further research (A Dragon’s Head and a Serpent’s Tail, by Kenneth M. Swope) dug up the fact that Nurhaci started raiding into Korea as early as 1609, which would have made him a preexisting problem for our heroes. Urgh. Gah. Snarl.
So how do you solve a problem like Nurhaci?
Well, it always helps to know your opponent. So I went poking the internet on him at the library the next day I had off. Two things of note here. First, I couldn’t really find better or more comprehensive info on him than that on his Wikipedia page. Which is frustrating, given I tend to take Wikipedia with a grain of salt. I’ll have to look at JSTOR the next chance I get. In the meantime, at least I have Alternate History to cover me if it turns out that page is Horribly Wrong.
Second, that Wikipedia page notes, if you read it carefully, that Nurhaci really got his grudge on for Ming (and Korea) about 1582-1583, when his grandfather and father got crosswise of a clan rival Nikan Wailan, got killed, and the Ming guy whose territory the rival was in wouldn’t hand said rival over.
Intrigued Plotbunnies: “Okay, we’re saying that the vampire who sired Lee Cheong is an honorable guy. Not nice, but honorable. And history says Nurhaci’s grandpa went into the fray at Gure to rescue his daughter. This is a Noble Cause. If the Sire was in the area he would help.”
Cue Nurhaci actually owing the sire one, and having friendly relations with Korea instead of raiding them. Possibly still raiding Ming, but that’s a problem I think the story could handle.
So that’s one major timeline tweak right there. The second turning point is farther back - 1388, in fact.
This is the general who was invading parts of Manchuria (owned by Mongols at the time) to get them back for the kingdom of Goryeo.
Note this bit: “General Choe was betrayed and executed by his former subordinate Yi Seong-gye.”
That Yi guy? Became the first king of Joseon.
Very intrigued plotbunnies: Okay, we’ve been trying to figure out how the vampire sire - for whom we’ve been using the placeholder clan name Hak - is related to the current royal line. But this general? His daughter was Royal Consort Choe Yeong-bi. King U of Goryeo’s second highest ranking consort.
Plotbunnies: History doesn’t record a brother for Choe Yeong. What if he had one?
What if that’s the vampire sire’s background? Became a vampire, stayed away from his family Because - and then his brother was at risk of death and execution because of a general who wanted to turn traitor?
Plotbunnies: Make him a Choe instead, and the vampire line is still related to the royal one - but as loyal generals. The Yi line of kings never gets started, Goryeo becomes Daehan by taking back the Liaodong Peninsula and parts of Manchuria, and overall they’re striking a balance between the Jurchens, Mongol heritage from the overthrown Yuan Dynasty, and the Ming.
This gives me backstory on the Sire, and a very good reason he’s backing the demon hunters - “loyal defense of the nation” is one of his defining character traits.
A related side note? A bit in A Dragon’s Head and a Serpent’s Tail says the Imjin War kicked Joseon’s creaky administration in the butt enough they had to do certain reforms, making it ultimately strong enough to last as long as it did. So... plotbunnies are thinking that happened in this timeline as well, with Choe Ryu-Cha getting a bit of a reality slap of, international politics are going to bite his homeland if he doesn’t Do Things to prepare them. Hence siring Lee Cheong later, among other things.
Meaning if nasty magic happens (and some will), anything spell-wise will latch onto “this is a bloodline of loyal military” instead of “this is royalty”. And given tensions between military and court bureaucrat types in Confucian courts, that’s plenty of reason Lee Cheong has enemies!

ASTRONOMERS SEE ‘COSMIC RING OF FIRE,’ 11 BILLION YEARS AGO: UNUSUAL GALAXY SET TO PROMPT RETHINK ON HOW STRUCTURES IN THE UNIVERSE FORM Astronomers have captured an image of a super-rare type of galaxy -- described as a “cosmic ring of fire” -- as it existed 11 billion years ago. The galaxy, which has roughly the mass of the Milky Way, is circular with a hole in the middle, rather like a titanic doughnut. Its discovery, announced in the journal Nature Astronomy, is set to shake up theories about the earliest formation of galactic structures and how they evolve. “It is a very curious object that we’ve never seen before,” said lead researcher Dr. Tiantian Yuan, from Australia’s ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D). “It looks strange and familiar at the same time.” The galaxy, named R5519, is 11 billion light-years from the solar system. The hole at its centre is truly massive, with a diameter two billion times longer than the distance between the Earth and the Sun. To put it another way, it is three million times bigger than the diameter of the supermassive black hole in the galaxy Messier 87, which in 2019 became the first ever to be directly imaged. “It is making stars at a rate 50 times greater than the Milky Way,” said Dr. Yuan, who is an ASTRO 3D Fellow based at the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University of Technology, in the state of Victoria. “Most of that activity is taking place on its ring -- so it truly is a ring of fire.” Working with colleagues from around Australia, US, Canada, Belgium and Denmark, Dr. Yuan used spectroscopic data gathered by the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii and images recorded by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to identify the unusual structure. The evidence suggests it is a type known as a “collisional ring galaxy,” making it the first one ever located in the early universe. There are two kinds of ring galaxies. The more common type forms because of internal processes. Collisional ones form -- as the name suggests -- as a result of immense and violent encounters with other galaxies. In the nearby “local” universe they are 1,000 times rarer than the internally created type. Images of the much more distant R5519 stem from about 10.8 billion years ago, just three billion years after the Big Bang. They indicate that collisional ring galaxies have always been extremely uncommon. ASTRO 3D co-author, Dr. Ahmed Elagali, based at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research in Western Australia, said studying R5519 would help determine when spiral galaxies began to develop. “Further, constraining the number density of ring galaxies through cosmic time can also be used to put constraints on the assembly and evolution of local-like galaxy groups,” he added. Another co-author, Professor Kenneth Freeman from the Australian National University, said the discovery had implications for understanding how galaxies like the Milky Way formed. “The collisional formation of ring galaxies requires a thin disk to be present in the ‘victim’ galaxy before the collision occurs,” he explained. “The thin disk is the defining component of spiral galaxies: before it assembled, the galaxies were in a disorderly state, not yet recognisable as spiral galaxies.” “In the case of this ring galaxy, we are looking back into the early universe by 11 billion years, into a time when thin disks were only just assembling. For comparison, the thin disk of our Milky Way began to come together only about nine billion years ago. This discovery is an indication that disk assembly in spiral galaxies occurred over a more extended period than previously thought.”

Primary sources related to the Mongol period
Primary sources are the most important part of any historical study, for they are one of the ways that information from the past is transferred to us. In my own videos I increasingly try to make greater use of them, and to aid in the efforts and interests of others, below I will link the english (and two french) translations I have found freely accessible online. Obviously, working with primary sources in the original language is best, but very difficult for the Mongol period considering the Feel free to add any which I have not included (if anyone has found an online copy of D.S. Richard's part 3 translation of Ibn al-Athir, that would be much obliged! Likewise, for the full text of Rashid al-Din)
If any links don't work, please let me know and I'l see if I can do anything about them. I tried to keep them roughly categorized, but the Bretscheinder/Henri Yule/Hakluyt Society works at the end didn't quite fit neatly into that. If you have a question about a particular source or who it was that wrote it, also feel free to ask. I do apologize for wonky formatting (due to the transition from Google Docs to websites!) or ramshackle citation (rather spur of the moment to share it).
Hopefully this helps people interested in the period!

Kenneth Yuan - Coding in the Clouds, Unveiling the World of YouTube Ads at Google
Tumblr media
Kenneth Yuan shares that working as a software engineer at Google, particularly in the realm of YouTube Ads, has been an exhilarating journey that seamlessly blends technological innovation with the dynamic landscape of digital advertising. My tenure at Google has not only enriched my technical acumen but has also exposed me to the intricacies of shaping the future of online advertising through one of the world's most influential platforms.
From the very beginning, the atmosphere at Google exuded innovation and collaboration. The campus, with its cutting-edge architecture and vibrant energy, was a testament to the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology. As a software engineer, my role was centered around the development and enhancement of systems that power YouTube Ads—a domain that plays a pivotal role in shaping the digital marketing landscape.
One of the most captivating aspects of working on YouTube Ads was the scale of operations. The sheer magnitude of data and user interactions posed challenges that demanded innovative solutions. Developing algorithms and systems capable of handling billions of ad impressions while ensuring seamless user experience required a delicate balance of efficiency and robustness. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, product managers, and UX designers, became second nature as we collectively worked towards refining the advertising ecosystem.
The heartbeat of YouTube Ads lies in its recommendation and targeting systems. As a software engineer, I had the privilege of contributing to the refinement of these systems, constantly seeking ways to enhance user engagement while ensuring that advertisers could effectively reach their target audience. The dynamic nature of online user behavior meant that our algorithms had to evolve rapidly, staying ahead of trends and adapting to changing patterns.
Kenneth Yuan says that one of the highlights of my journey was the opportunity to work on a project aimed at optimizing ad delivery based on user preferences. The challenge was to leverage machine learning models to understand user behavior and serve ads that resonated with their interests. This involved delving into complex datasets, fine-tuning models, and collaborating with data scientists to ensure the accuracy of predictions. Witnessing the impact of our work on improving ad relevance and user satisfaction was truly gratifying.
Working at Google also meant being part of a culture that values experimentation. The concept of "20% time" exemplified the company's commitment to allowing employees to dedicate a portion of their workweek to pursue projects of personal interest. This freedom to explore and innovate not only fueled my passion for software engineering but also led to the exploration of novel ideas within the realm of YouTube Ads.
As a software engineer working on YouTube Ads at Google, I've had the privilege of contributing to a platform that not only shapes the digital advertising landscape but also influences global trends and user behavior. The experience has been a mosaic of challenges, innovations, and collaborative efforts that have shaped me both professionally and personally.
Looking ahead, the fast-paced nature of the tech industry means that new challenges and opportunities will continue to emerge. The experience of working on YouTube Ads at Google has equipped me with a skill set that extends beyond coding— it's about understanding the pulse of users, predicting trends, and contributing to a future where technology intersects seamlessly with the way we experience and interact with digital content. The journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and as I continue to evolve as a software engineer, I carry with me the invaluable lessons and experiences gained at the epicenter of technological innovation—Google.

Bananas need a hero, fast (Quartz) Scientists are racing to save bananas before a new strain of Panama disease, the infection that almost decimated the fruit in the 1950s, wipes the $44 billion industry out. One possible solution? Nematode worms. Genes from nematodes have a special talent: They can block cells from destroying themselves. Transplanting nematode genes into bananas could block Panama disease’s fungus from forcing the plant’s cells to self-destruct. But such a solution would require global consumers to embrace genetically modified food.
