So, hi! I'm Verne (they/them), practically a queer elder in my 30s, brand new to tumblr (dunno how I ever missed the boat), and I only ever seem to write in the 20 minutes or so between pulling up to work and clocking in, or when I'm putting my toddlers down for a nap but don't want to crawl out of their beds and address the chores I gotta do while they're out of the way. I've written poetry, prose, and roleplayed in the past but got away from it for years and years, and only recently started writing again. I have notebooks and lists of story ideas but the few things I have fleshed out are mostly silly character-based "what if?" scenarios, because those are the most fun to me. Too many of my stories are me simply wanting to write a scene, developing a bit of a world around it, then losing interest entirely. I hope this blog can change that a bit, help me focus on following through or figuring out how to better develop small ideas into something longer.

Bad Blood - A Fallout Nuka-World fanfic (#ntzsche Nuka-World)
My longest story is a fanfic, but with a cast of characters largely not in the Fallout 4 DLC. I intend to eventually write this in a way that someone who hasn't played the game would be able to easily read.
Lafayette, the son of a 'retired' raider, left his abusive father to find his place in the world and was taken in by an eclectic trauma-bonded found family that inspires him to be a better person and shows him love he is certain he doesn't deserve. When his father comes across them in a raid, Lafayette is given the offer to join him, and he agrees in order to save the settlement and his little brother. Lafayette finds that being with his dad again, and being the son he always wanted him to be, isn't nearly as difficult as he thought it would be. He struggles to maintain the person he wants to be with the person he suspects he is, all while a cast of scheming raiders, wastelanders, and slaves vie for power in the raider city built within the rusted remains of an amusement park.
Salem's Child (#ntzsche Salem)
A background on one of the lesser Nuka-World characters that I got carried away with.
Andrew Rook doesn't look like his parents. He looks like someone they are desperate to forget. Growing up in post-apocalyptic Salem, Massachusetts has it's perks, though. In a fading settlement run by incompetent men who would rather blame the population of feral black cats for their problems than try to solve them, Andrew and his two best friends build a world in their imagination that shields them from the wretchedness of the wasteland and the people they have to rely on to survive.
Hechizo
Another character background that I would love to expand into a few short stories around.
Mateo Zavala was born in the vibrant and tight-knit community of Navarro. His great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother, a pre-war ghoul, is still the ruling matriarch, and it's hard for her not to play favorites when she has over 300 living descendants.
The Crash (#ntzsche Crash)
A what-if real-world rewrite of an event from another story. I just really enjoy writing these two.
Gabe always knew his functional alcoholic roomie would get into a terrible car wreck some day, but he never thought he would be dumb enough to be in the car with him. When the consequences of the wreck threaten to destroy Dave's life, Gabe finds himself doing everything he can to hold those pieces together. The love he harbors for his straight, polyamorous best friend runs deeper than either of them are ready to face, and find that Dave's injury turns their relationship completely on end.

what was your tumblr like when you first joined? it was a lot of reblogs of aesthetic photographs because it was 2012 and i was 14. not long after that tho it turned into a sebastian stan fan blog which is how i got my url, and over time that slowly morphed into the multi fandom madness you see today
what clothing style do you love but don't feel compelled to replicate yourself? god i don't know, my closet is a little bit of everything because i always wanna try a new style when i see it. i honestly don't think i have an answer for this one, i really do love fashion and my style is constantly changing
if you were plopped into a fictional world, which one would you know the layout of the best? i have no idea. acotar maybe? solely because i've read those books so many times? yeah i guess i'll go with that

do you carry a daily bag? what does it look like? what's the weirdest thing in it? nope. i don't have an office bag bc i wfh and on the weekends i absolutely despise carrying a purse. i have one of those phone cases with card slots on the back and it holds everything i could possibly need.
if you had to ship Mickey with another Gallagher, who would it be? sexually i think it'd have to be lip, but if i could platonically ship him with someone i think i'd pick fiona. idk i just think they'd get along better than anyone would think.
what is a fanfic trope you didn't expect to like and then very much did? friends to lovers kinda snuck up on me in my adulthood. i used to be very against it as a teen, but now that i'm grown and have actually seen the trope done well in fics and in media, it's one of my favorite tropes of all time.
Do you think s11 Mickey can still carry s11 Ian? yes 100% absolutely and anyone who says otherwise is lying. (did we all see noel's s11 body? we saw the abs right? mans was ripped in the last season even tho the writers like, never showed it, and it is my personal mission to avenge this wrongdoing) i'm kidding about the lying part but yeah, he absolutely can still carry s11 ian, being able to lift his husband is the only reason he still goes to the gym

ive been on cohost on-and-off since november, and i think im going to stick with it (famous last words, i know, but i am genuinely enjoying my time there, meeting some nice people and enjoying the posts that come across my dash)

general observations, differences between here and tumblr (both good and bad), and caveats under the cut
the ability to use html and css in posts is fantastic, and while i do sometimes miss being able to change the formatting with a simple highlight like on tumblr, the added abilities to customize more than makes up for that. i've only used it a bit myself, but plan to use it more going forward, and you can get some fantastic shitposts on your dash because of this. note that only posts are hyper-customizable. blogs themselves aren't as customizable as on tumblr (think the default/mobile theme here)
i think their pro-privacy, anti-algorithm, anti-numbers philosophy is admirable. it's not perfect-- funding is a continual trouble, although they have plans for making it sustainable.
as with all smaller websites, it is a bit of an echo-chamber and has its share of drama and controversy.
the fewer number of people also lead to there being fewer good posts than on here, especially if you have niche interests, but my dash is still quite active, and i have to check it at least once a day to keep up-to-date.
if you edit your original post, all reblogged versions of the post are updated as well.
it has a comprehensive cw system built into posts, more reminiscent of mastodon than tumblr. there is discourse about its use or over-use, but on the whole i think this is a big improvement.
i (thankfully) haven't run into anybody or any post that required blocking or silencing or muting yet, but the options are there and thorough.
related, there is a no-nonsense attitude towards bigotry. i havent run into any bad eggs myself, but from what i've been given to understand they are sniped more or less as soon as they're discovered. there may be moderation issues as the website expands (this is one issue where places split up into smaller groups like mastodon have benefits) but as of right now, it seems to be working just fine, and better than tumblr.
there's no general within-post search for the sake of privacy and to limit harassment opportunities, but unlike tumblr, the tag search is functional. in addition, all posts with tags you've bookmarked show up in a separate, single tab on your dash, in proper chronological, non-algo'd order, which is a good way to discover new people to follow and posts to reblog. this is similar to "your tags" on tumblr, but unlike tumblr, i trust it to work
i haven't used this yet, but sideblogs are able to comment, ask, like, follow, etc, separately. no more "follows from [main url]"
in general, i like the vibes better than pillowfort, the other tumblr replacement site, and its a much more satisfying tumblr replacement than mastodon, because, well, its not like twitter (although i do like mastodon for other reasons).
there are some odd things that differentiate it from tumblr that you have to get used to at best, and can be extremely frustrating at worst:
notes cant be viewed per-post. they're all under your notification tab, chronologically listed. this hasnt been a problem for me, but i understand that this can get messy if you have a lot of followers/notes
if you are not OP, you cannot view others' reblogs. i've found that this is mostly fine, but it does mean you cant dive into the notes to see if anyone has added anything you'd like to reblog instead of the version on your dash. changing this is one of the most requested features. it doesn't seem to conflict with the site's anti-numbers ideals as long as it only lists contentful reblogs (those with additions), so i'm hopeful it will be added.
OP is not notified of tags on reblogs. all comments that are towards OP and not towards your followers belong in the comments. unlike other things in this list, this isn't a downside so much as a neutral difference that has taken me a long time to get used to.
the comments are generally important. reblog chains are still used, but comments (replies) are more functional than they are on tumblr, with proper ability to reply in comment threads and a better UI. they are used more often on cohost than on here, especially if you want to start a convo with OP and others viewing the post. as far as i can tell, everyone can see every comment, unlike the reblogs.
photoset layouts are not as flexible as on tumblr
no DMs
discovery hasn't been a big issue for me as someone who is primarily a reader/viewer (if anything, the functional tagging system and unified bookmarked tags tab makes it easier), but ive heard that for creators it can be frustrating
i am under the impression that pillowfort is the place to go for specifically fandom posting. more fandom people have been joining cohost though, especially since a bunch of tumblr people joined a couple weeks ago.
i realize this isn't exactly a hard sell, but want people to be aware of potential downsides before creating an account. despite these things, i really do urge you to check it out if youre interested! it's a good place :)

Ok, I'm mostly asking for story research purposes and because I simply for him, but without bias, what kind of girl do you think Leona Kingscholar would want. He obviously probably wants to be the dominant one in a relationship since he stated that he is intimidated by afterglow Savanna women but I'm curious what you think! ❤
Please note that this is my own interpretation of Leona, so it could be OOC and should not be perceived as a perfect/ strict “guide” to Leona’s character. Leona’s ideal s/o will be referred to using gender-neutral terms.

TRAITS WHICH I THINK LEONA WOULD NOT WANT IN AN S/O:
♡ Same attitude as Leona – According to Endless Halloween, it is hilariously canon that Leona dislikes people who act like him. Ohhh the irony xD
♡ Childish personality – We already know that Leona dislikes dealing with kids or overly childish/ naive people, as seen in his interactions with Cheka and his Lab Coat SR. He would probably prefer a romantic relationship that isn’t identical to those he already has with Cheka and his kouhai -.-
♡ Toxic positivity/ blind naivete/ black-and-white morality – These qualities are similar to how Falena and Jack judged Leona’s actions in the Main Story. Leona would thus dislike people who immediately judge his personality and belittle his experiences without considering the serious psychological effects of his upbringing. At the very least, in order to call out Leona on his BS, his s/o should be willing to understand his perspective and have a two-sided conversation with him.
TRAITS WHICH I THINK LEONA WOULD WANT IN AN S/O:
♡ Maturity – Considering his status as an uncle and senpai, I think Leona would prefer an s/o who can look after themselves and think critically. That way, he can distinguish his lover from his other relationships <3
♡ Optimism + Realism – While I already mentioned why an overly positive s/o is not ideal for Leona, an overly pessimistic s/o could feed into his feelings of hopelessness and negativity. So I think a relationship with Leona needs a healthy balance of optimism and realism. This type of s/o can help Leona appreciate what he already has and show him that a happy, fulfilling future is within his grasp–and beyond his original dreams of becoming king.* Even better if they can recognize Leona’s good qualities, especially the underrated potential of his Unique Magic ^o^
*Do note, however, that Leona’s s/o should not be the one to “fix him.” Ultimately, it is up to Leona to come to terms with his situation and change his mindset. Without proper character development, I don’t think he would be ready for an intimate relationship to begin with.
♡ Not afraid of him – This ties into the Sunset Savannah servants’ fearsome perceptions of Leona. Aside from viewing King’s Roar in a different light, Leona’s s/o should not be afraid to point out his faults. This trait establishes equal standing in their relationship and shows that Leona’s s/o trusts his strength.
♡ Consideration and firmness – Another important balance of ideal traits!! Leona’s s/o should be the type who knows when to indulge him and when to be firm with him. Someone who takes the time to understand Leona’s situation, but does not overly coddle him or excuse his actions. Someone who accepts Leona’s hobbies and lifestyle, but is responsible enough to wake him up and tell him to attend his classes. On that note, I think an active s/o who strives for their own goals can in/directly encourage Leona to take action in his own life ٩(*•͈ ꇴ •͈*)و

Hello there! Please, call me Nimue. I’m 22 years old and German (English is my second anguage). I am on the aromantic spectrum. I am genderfluid and thus what I identify as will shift on a whim. Overhaul? Yes. But I try to be a bit more careful with f/os nowadays so a lot are pending. I mainly focus on Ensemble Stars and Hypnosis Mic tho, so expect me to gush about them the most. I mostly post about Fling Posse at the moment. I love all of my f/os though!
"Shipped with s/i" means that I ship them with my s/i but I do not consider them f/os! I just enjoy the ship dynamics. Thus these ships are not personal to me by any means and I would not rank them as my partners due to a lack of feelings for them.
There are also a few f/os who are a bit complicated due to past circumstances (I rather not talk about it). Once I recovered and sorted my feelings I add them to the other rows especially Romani Archaman, I love him so much and want to decleare him my boyfriend again you have no idea... Do You Cosplay: Back when I used to dabble in LARPing, I did lots of costume work, so I GUESS you could count that as cosplay? Blog FAQ. Backdated to 2/22/23 from 2/25/23, mostly to see whether it'd work.
I was @heroofthreefaces for ten years. 2/19/23 that blog was deactivated without notice or explanation and, at this writing, with no response to the resultant Support contact form sent. EDIT 3/27/23 heroofthreefaces was reinstated without apology or explanation; I elected to retain paulgadzikowski as my primary.
I was @d0ct0rwh0 for three days. 2/22/23 that blog was deactivated without notice or explanation and, at this writing, with no response to the resultant Support contact form sent, nor to a Twitter inquiry to Support 2/24/23 on behalf of both deactivations.
I'll write a proper FAQ here if this blog lasts long enough that the lack bothers me. Otherwise, I'm scarfman at Pillowfort and at Dreamwidth and heroof3faces at Twitter; and my webcomics are Arthur, King of Time and Space and The Hero of Three Faces.
EDIT 3/9/23 Okay, one thing I should probably mention even before I get around to creating a real FAQ is that I now have a sideblog for separating off all the activism and heavy matters reblogs, called @nosuchthingasaburdenonsociety, so that my main is safe for those who come to Tumblr to forget about life for awhile. Except the new text editor has this funny new quirk where posts/reblogs default to whichever of your blogs you used last, whereas I have ten years' muscle memory based on the legacy text editor defaulting to your main, and new blogs don't have the option to use the legacy text editor like my old blog did. So posts end up on the wrong blog sometimes. These posts get tagged wrong blog and usually get reblogged onto the correct one where they are also tagged wrong blog.

EDIT 3/23/23 Well this blog's survived a month. Time for a FAQ I guess. This entry and every entry on this blog are at all times subject to editing for updates, corrections, and simple clarity.
My name's Paul Gadzikowski and I draw the webcomic The Hero of Three Faces, fanfiction crossovers but it's comic strips with stick figures but they're triangles. For nine-plus years I also drew Arthur, King of Time and Space which functionally was, among other things, King Arthur mashed up with my fanfiction.
Every day that there's an update at Three Faces, the next morning at or about 10:00 (all times US Central) I post a link here to it, which gets pinned to the top of the blog. Every evening at 22:00 I post a link to a "rerun", a cartoon in the archives; the rerun only gets pinned during annual summer hiatus of new updates.
Also I post and reblog fannish things. Doctor Who is my favorite and the Doctor is the primary character in Three Faces, because I've always loved crossovers and there's no better literary and literal device to facilite crossovers than a time machine. The top tier in my pantheon of fandoms consists of all Star Treks, Superman and superheroes (these days more screen than print versions), M*A*S*H, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Star Wars, and Dracula Daily; but anything I watch and read may show up in Three Faces or here, and lots of what my Tumblr mutuals watch and read too.
As noted above I have a side blog @nosuchthingasaburdenonsociety in order to keep my main safe for those who come to Tumblr to forget about life for a while. I can be sloppy inconsistent about parsing which posts go on which blog, especially now that the nusternucking new text editor defaults to whichever one where you last posted, instead of defaulting to your main like the old text editor did. And there are some serious topics which never did migrate to the sideblog, like racism in fandom and the coronavirus.
Most posts are queued, on both blogs, unless I want to respond to something conversationally, or I'm trying to be the first with the joke, or I feel like it. At least once a day - usually twice a day on my main - I adjust the queue rate to the number of posts in the queue; or, more recently, I've been setting my queue, depending on how much is in it, to no less than 20 a day and no more than 30 a day, because that cuts down on how often there's less than 20 in it. Barring unusual circumstances I'm posting (firing my queue) 24 hours a day and I probably seem most active the day after I've been most active.
This is a list of my most significant personal tags. Some of these may be from the old blog and not yet effective here (if you're looking for something specific you remember then remember to check the old blog too now that it's back). As a rule I'll try to use the same ones here as I did there though there are a few cases where I took advantage of the opportunity to revise.

How long till we reach the door?
My first E fic and longest published fic to date. For whatever reason, it was one of the easiest fics for me to write, and is still one of my favorites. I also experimented with a dual POV, and I liked how it turned out.
Lock it up
The idea for this fic came about from a random tumblr post about David being Patrick's lock screen photo. For whatever reason, I really enjoy (HEA, obviously) fics where the Brewers learn that Patrick is gay/about his relationship in an alternate way. I think it's because it's a miracle he did keep the secret as long as he did.
A taste of you
From a prompt for Frozen Over. I'm sure the prompter did not intend for there to be as many ball jokes in a cake pop decorating meet-cute, but unfortunately I have the humor of a 12 year old boy. I still love this fic, and I like that I was able to include the phone call from canon, as well as Stevie because I love her.
Kiss & tell
The idea that Patrick would befriend the neighborhood ladies absolutely delights me, and power walking seemed to be the best way to do it. I also love that no matter how much gossip two local business-owning queer men may have, the busybody old ladies always know more.
(He) was a fast machine
Poor, newly single Patrick has to listen to his upstairs neighbors have sex. Loudly. Constantly. At least he can make friends, right? I'm glad others enjoyed this fic, because I love it and was delighted the whole time while writing it!
4 wips
I have a handful of wips I could share, but these are the most likely to actually come to fruition. I get distracted easily, therefore I write slow. I'm also more focused on drawing right now, so.
Post-canon vacation fic!
This will be my longest fic to date, and I am very excited about it. Mostly just lots of sex and soft husband's.
David's mirror
A slightly angsty fic I started recently. Basically, David's struggle with self-image.

3 biggest improvements
The first is just that I started writing, I suppose. I had a teacher in high school who absolutely hated my writing, for whatever reason, and had me convinced I was Bad at writing. Then I posted a silly little fic and all my friends were so lovely about it that I kept trying.
I would say I got better at recognizing how I write. I tend to need to get the general actions written out in a scene before I go back in and flesh out more depth and emotion.
I learned a lot more about dialogue punctuation. I haven't written much dialogue... ever, so I spent time trying to make sure I do it right.
2 resolutions
Write more! I really do enjoy writing, and I would like to carve out more time to do it.
Take more time to plot. I work a lot better when I have a structure to follow, so if I take the time in the beginning, I think it will be easier to stick with ideas.
Number 1 Favorite Line

I don't know that I really have a favorite line I've written, but part of my Marcy series centers around her desire to be involved and fully supportive of her new life. I headcanon that the older he got, the less Patrick liked having pictures of himself taken because it was too close to showing how he felt inside. It's hard to live a lie when it's staring you in the face, right? So now that he's accepted this huge part of himself, he starts taking pictures again and Marcy is delighted.

Munday Writing Stuff - Accepting!
Something that bothers you to read in RP specifically?
Two big ones would be muses with no discernible faults or weaknesses (the Mary Sue/Gary Stu sort of muse that should be appealing and attractive to everyone. I have chosen not to follow blogs for this very reason: decent writing quality, but too-perfect muses), and quiet/brooding/introspective muses whose threads don't leave much to interact with or respond to. Closely followed by replies that answer questions from your previous reply, but don't add anything else to the thread.
But a Danganron.pa-specific annoyance? DR muses whose talents never factor into their lives. Yes, they're written as being admitted to Hope's Peak Academy based on such-and-such talent, and then the muns...never show them engaging with that talent. Not even schoolwork.
As fun as high school stories can be, the whole point of Hope's Peak, at least in the Main Course, is to gather students who are incredibly skilled in specific talents while aiming to have them be wholly and completely defined by them, in order to obtain the brightest possible future. A secured career for life, money, fame, etc. That's a lot of pressure for a 16 to 18 year old! There's even canon characters who don't want to be defined by their specific talents, and some who want to pursue other interests but due to their status at Hope's Peak, they can't.
And I really wish more DR muns would explore those topics: how did their muse's talents end up shaping their muse? Did they peak in high school? Did they eventually go on to the success the school promised?
This is more of what bothers me not to read in RP, but I think it still qualifies.
How many times do you reread a reply?
I talked about how many times I read my own in another reply, but here I'll share how many times I reread someone else's starter to me/reply in a thread:
Around a dozen.
Especially if the reply is long and/or there's a Big Dramatic Moment going on.
This is mostly due to my own writing process which involves something like this:
get tagged in reply and/or starter
read said post
Immediately get a few dialogue options that I scribble down for later
think on it for a little while/overnight/while I do something else
sit down to write properly. Read through the post at least twice more.
Put the kettle on for pot of tea #1
Look at my earlier/immediate notes and either decide 'there's something here that might be okay' or 'well this is crap and I have no idea how to match my writing partner's quality and make them feel All The Things'
Decide I need to put on a playlist. Immediately get distracted by whatever random track Spotify thinks my Daily Mix needs.
"Well, I'll read this again and then do some google searches for thread ideas. For accuracy, you know."
This inevitably leads to a deep dive of: blogs, reddit, wikipedia, and/or YouTube
"Oh, this would be a great idea for another thread/a future thread! But wait, I was supposed to get inspo for -this- thread"
Goes back to read the reply a few more times
Right around here is when I try to write the first paragraph and yell about why I can't form words good. I'm an absolute imposter of a writer because why am I not turning around thousands of words per day.
Someone messages me on discord with something inevitably more appealing than trying to write this reply. I engage with it because that's a cute meme or great idea for muse shenanigans
Put on the kettle for pot of tea #2 while browsing the dash
Laugh at some dashcomm, send some memes, immediately forget where I was going with that thread reply
Read the reply once again while the tea steeps
...finally write and queue my reply to the reply, possibly while annoyed this took so long.
This is also why writing more than three replies or starters per day for me is a real achievement. Because each time, I go through this process. I'm sure there's a better way to focus and do things but I've yet to figure it out.

Hope you're feeling better! I just wanted to say that maybe try to remember that many of the big or notable names of content creators, specifically artists on tumblr for the tts fandom, are also active on other sites. I know people say over and over to not compare your art to others, but some of these people have been online for yearssss, thus building a community for those years as well! And also with your recent art doing so well, I have no doubt you'll be right up with those groups of names in the future!
Oh wow, thank you so much for these kinds words! I'm not exaggerating when I say I teared up! I always feel amazingly touched when people take the time to be this nice!
And I completely agree and understand! I don't really compare myself to big names in the fandom. I do (and shouldn't) sometimes end up comparing myself to smaller creators who I'm mutuals with.
But a lot of my anxiety comes from a series of overthinking. 'Oh, nobody re-blogged this piece, is it because I posted it at a bad time? Is the art ugly? Or is it because they can't be seen interacting with me because somebody somewhere is talking about how I'm a horrible person?'
A very unreasonable and sudden jump. I am 100% working on it!
It's just a lot harder for me to get back into tumblr compared to other sites, both because of an experience I had with it when I was a teenager... and because of the more recent hate I received on this account (the anon asks for those who remember...).
I don't really aspire to be a big name! Mostly cause big names aren't as approachable and my goal is more to chat about the show I love? Something that I think would be harder if people weren't approaching me?
But the smile it brings to my face that you think I could be one! See, now you're inspiring me to want to draw even more!

I am! I'm still limiting my access to tumblr. It's off the phone and I have to log in every time on pc so as to make sure I'm only coming in when in a good mindset.

Top 5 works im proud of, in no particular order:
Impaled (Felix Lawrence) - I’m mostly proud of this one because I was worried if I could write it at all! A lot of moving parts in the scene that i was convinced would get away from me, but i managed to keep everything straight and describe it clearly. It was also a struggle to drip-feed bits of necessary lore into this one snippet without grinding the whole thing to a halt and i think i did that pretty well!
Confrontation (Ghost ambulance) - I’m super happy with the prose in this. I think it flows the best out of most of my stuff and there are some sentences that i’m really proud of because they convey a lot of meaning in a very pretty way. I often find it hard to balance clarity and metaphor but i hit the jackpot here. The dialogue is also one of my better ones, i think.
Failed rescue attempt (Kintsugi) - this one takes the prize for dialogue though, I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out. I tried to fit an entire conflict between two characters into a single conversation and introduce them both by way of that conflict - while also keeping them sounding distinct and like real people. I’m also very pleased with myself over the use of the prop in the scene lmao it’s such a small thing but i felt like a film director including it lol
No anesthesia (Ghost ambulance) - im mostly proud of the pacing in this one. it's quite long but it doesn't become repetitive which is something i notice a lot in my writing. both the dialogue and the actual action flow pretty well and there are no awkward transitions or subject changes - plus it might be the longest actual pain description ive ever written lmao but i managed to keep it interesting throughout and have the whump scene actually feel like a Scene.
Whumper POV (Ghost ambulance): I wrote this mostly to challenge myself and i succeeded at the thing that was the challenge! I wanted to try a brand new character voice and also to develop said character - but not to fall into common "whumper tropes". I don't write whumpers often so i was worried i'd end up with a cliche but i managed to find an emotional core for the character and from there it went more smoothly. The biggest point of pride for me is that i fell in love with Brent as a character because of this piece lol and now i want to write more of him
Top 4 current WIPs:
Uhhhh i never ever name anything lmao but:
WIP 1 is some comfort-heavy Elaine whump that shows her mindset before and after meeting her friends and it's just. SO comfort. im excited. i should hurt her more often so she can be taken care of (◡‿◡)
WIP 2 is an introduction to a new ghost ambulance storyline, taking place at a fancy high-society party. I honestly don't have much of it figured out plot-wise lmao that's why it's not going very quickly but it's gonna have high stakes, a race against the clock, gratuitous descriptions of fancy outfits, and a brand new character (with gun)
WIP 3 is a whumptober "poisoned" prompt that i'm planning to finish, because i have some cool monster ideas for it that i can spend a bit more time developing now that i have no time concerns. of course, no time concerns probably means it will take much longer than it needs to lol
WIP 4 is something i started aaaaages ago, it concerns a dislocation, blood draining, and a sentient vampire tree trying to eat people. it's incredibly fun but i got a bit stuck on a description and never finished it so i wanna try and get it out soon (◡‿◡)
(im also going to add the entirety of Kintsugi in here even though i don't think i'm going to post much of it. the characters changed a lot as i developed the story and so did the whole setup so unless i feel like doing an au, im gonna most likely spend time writing the feature-length thing. i am v excited about it though (◡‿◡))
Top 3 writing improvements:
Ehhhhhh this one is really hard bc i have this sinking feeling that my writing has actually gotten worse through this year djdjfhdkd its probably because i write way more than i used to, so a lot of stuff is going to be Just Alright instead of something i consider standout. Also ive started looking at my work more critically so I can consciously improve, but it does mean i notice more of the flaws.
But Improvement 1 is definitely dialogue, im much more comfortable writing it now and i have a decent idea of how and why it might stumble - and through that, how to make it better.
Improvement 2 i'd call figuring out my workflow, which honestly does wonders for Actually Finishing Stuff. I learned to keep my writing momentum, mostly by using [filler words] in [brackets] instead of pausing to do research or look for the perfect word. I come back for those later, after i finish the first draft. Coming back to the first point, i also start a dialogue scene by just writing out the lines, with no prose or descriptions. That helps me keep the conversations on topic and gives them better flow cause i don't forget what the previous line was about while writing a reaction lol
Improvement 3 is a bit of a cheat but i do think it counts that i started reading way more this year. I try to pay attention to what i do and don't like about the books i read and how i can improve based on those insights. It's also very inspiring, do gotta say

Hmmmmm number 1 i'd say is to be kinder to my own writing tbh. I have so many goals i want to work towards but above them all hangs a bunch of uncertainty bc i doubt pretty much every choice i make. I keep thinking oh this is too winding, that is too simple, is this how it's Supposed be written and all of that whereas like. It's not Supposed to be anything. It's supposed to be fun and maybe meet my own standards of "quality" but that's it. In the words of a philosopher, It's Not That Deep.
Number 2 is to get my writing out to more people! I'd love to both get more audience here and also to maaaaaaybe perhaps somehow get published - that's a big dream of mine recently (◡‿◡) i reckon i have what it takes to get a short story in a magazine, i just need to be more resilient and send out more stuff

Forever & Always, Part 1
So, for those of you that are new or uninitiated, my fandom life online actually started out bc of The Vampire Diaries. See, way back, oh, 2010ish, I was in grad school and probably bordering on what might be gently described as a "depressive time" wherein I needed a sort of escape from reality. And so I turned to a teenage vampire drama. TVD gained me a tumblr, and a livejournal, and honestly an A03 account, and a FF.net account and taught me how to make gifs and to converse in the great wide world of fandom. I was by no means a large voice in the TVD world, but I was probably in at least tier 3. If you go back far enough, it's all TVD, all the way down. In fact, it took until Steve Rogers for Stefan Salvatore to be dethroned as the top tag on my tumblr.
That is all to say, that like many things, TVD had it's time in my life, and then I moved on. By mid season 4 I'd had my fill of teen vampire drama, and I declared myself well free of it all. TVD, The Originals, Legacies--I was over it. No need to go back and tread through waters I knew would be rough. I loved TVD for what it was and the potential it had, and I'll never regret that time in my life, but I had moved on. The need had passed and I had other fandoms to fill my time.
The Originals came out bc of a conversation with @disisphlebotinum where she was convinced I'd finally be able to get a ship that actually ended up good. I'd avoided The Originals for a long time, mostly because I knew that the show runner was a menace, and that one of her long time writers also had a reputation for being...bad. (Julie and Carina are menaces I swear). I wasn't down for more mess. But I had time and stuff to keep me busy while I watched, and I've always had a soft spot for Elijah (Daniel Gillies gives him something that makes me weak in the knees) so I thought "why not?". I've watched worse trash for less.
The Originals did the thing a few other shows have done to me, where it sort of sneaks up on me and then before I know it, it's got me by the throat. I've talked about this before on my blog, but I think there is a difference between good and good, and The Originals, much like TVD before it, is not good. The writing is inconsistent, their ability to maintain character consistency for more than 3 seasons is 0, and they both suffer from the problem of "how can you up the stakes when the stakes are already so high?". Like most tv shows, The Originals suffered from too many characters, a surplus of plot, a dash of cringe, and as ever, the eternal curse of going on just a little bit too long (season 5, I mean you). But, like many a trash show before, The Originals also suffers from a case of potential. The ideas of TO, and the characters they created, are intriguing enough that in better, more competent hands, I think it could have been something truly special.
And so, in classic Djem fashion, I'm going to overanalyze a thing which was never meant to be analyzed in the first place, and I'm going to attempt to put my thoughts about this show in order in an attempt to find some sort of closure to this throwback chapter in my fandom life. Any show that gets me to cry at a season finale is, in my opinion, worthy of at least some level of analysis. That, and perhaps I love talking just a bit too much about things that really, in the end, do not matter.

Fair Game Week WIPs
I wasn't certain at first if I'd have anything for FGW this year, but then a few ideas came along, and here we are! I have one day at the first draft stage, and the others are bubbling away nicely.
So here is a snippet from each day (in no particular order):
The Captain gave his horse her head, and the beast sprang forward willingly after standing still for so long. Her nostrils flared and the warm breath of horse and rider misted in the chill of the night air as they raced towards their prey. The highwayman, aware he was being pursued, leant low over her neck and spurred his mount on. Both of them knew the ground well, and Harbinger was sure-footed as she covered the ground.
Qrow grinned, his teeth white against his smudged face. His pursuer, whoever they were, was no match for him and his trusty horse.
"Glynda Goodwitch, Paranormal Investigator. You are Mr Branwen, I hope." She held out a hand and Qrow shook it, nodding and finally finding his voice.
"Uh, yes, that's me. Thank you for coming, and I'm sorry—"
She smiled thinly. "You were expecting someone who looked a little different, perhaps?"
"I don't really know what I was expecting. But if I'm honest, you don't look how I thought you might."
"This is the twenty-first century, Mr Branwen. We must move with the times, you know." She looked about the hallway as she spoke, then fixed Qrow with a serious look. "You have a problem here, I believe."
Ignoring the previous question, he rolled his shoulders with a groan. "How long do you need to stare at your reflection anyway? You know you're the fairest in the kingdom, skin like finest porcelain, hair like spun silk, blah blah blah."
Winter swivelled to face him. "You are simultaneously the best and worst bodyguard I've ever had. I only wish there was someone else, but the king insists it has to be you."
Qrow offered her a wide grin. "Well, your virtue is safe with me, isn't it? And obviously I'm the best... Jimmy knows it and pays me handsomely, too."
One perfect eyebrow shot up. "That's King James to you, if you please."
"Maybe." Clover's tone was not enthusiastic. "Or maybe I should just concentrate on lessons, and not think about getting off with anyone while we're here."
"That would work too." Elm got to her feet. "You done? We should probably—"
"What?" Clover turned his head to follow Elm's gaze, his heart stuttering as he saw Qrow walk into the dining room. He was on his own for once, but quickly wove between the tables to sit down opposite Summer on the far side of the room. Clover dragged his thoughts away from the effortless grace with which Qrow moved, to see Elm looking at him pityingly.
Qrow does what he usually does— ducks his head and looks down, rubbing the back of his neck. His cheeks are pink, and Clover finds his eyes drawn to them. There's a low mutter, and Qrow glances at him before looking away quickly.
It's dawning on Clover that his feelings for Qrow are becoming... not inappropriate, exactly. Unwise, perhaps. While friendly bonds between colleagues could be beneficial, a romantic relationship might prove otherwise.
Clover knows he must be careful. Qrow has issues he is dealing with; Clover doesn't want to jeopardise his fragile recovery. So he keeps his distance, wishing every day for a closeness that cannot be.
Qrow stared back through the window. "No, but people do get housemates they don't know. You can come and meet my friends, if you like. And... I dunno, you could give me a reference or something? To prove you're not some weirdo."
Clover pouted. "I'm not some weirdo. I'm very ordinary."
Qrow narrowed his eyes. "Weirdos always say that."
"How many do you know? Do you hang out with them on a regular basis?"
The trees here were thick, broad trunks growing close together and muffling any distant sounds. He alighted on a branch and cocked his head, trying to pinpoint any sound which might be helpful. Far away he could hear shouts, but he cared nothing for those who had pulled the trigger. What he wanted was—
There it was. A scuffling sound, accompanied by an unmistakeable groan.
I've never heard a bird make a sound like that before... it must be badly injured.
He flitted from tree to tree, quickly drawing closer. The sounds were clear now, and as he paused for a moment Qrow heard a distinct Ouch. This made no sense at all.
Gliding down to ground level, he reverted to his human form and stood up, listening once more. He moved quietly between the trees and after no more than fifteen paces came upon a sorry sight.

My god, I didn't realise, on my first watching of black sails, that after the storm, when it's a big plot point that Silver refuses his rations, there's the shot of Flint crying and then it pans over to the desk, showing his OWN Untouched Rations. The lengths this man goes to in order to achieve his ends, while at the same time beating himself up over it...
Silver realised that Flint was terrified of being a villain, but 1. He didn't think Flint would actually shoot two men point blank, and 2. Even though he knows it's eating Flint up that he's seen like that, Flint manages to fool even the one person that mostly sees through him into thinking he actually put himself into that part of the crew that gets and consumes rations.
But Flint and Silver are so much the same, they both refuse the rations, and while Silver's get saved and redistributed among the other rations, Flint's are On His Desk! Taken for the sake of appearances, yet entirely untouched because of Flint's unwavering fucking sense of righteousness.
He is letting those rations go to waste because to him, that is the lesser of two evils, where the greater evil would be indulging where others are suffering because that would put him on the same level as their oppressors. And while he's willing to appear that way, he would literally rather die than to actually Be like that.

The thing that really gets me is that Stede is already doubting stuff way before Chauncey gives him that one final push. Throughout ep9, he asks if Ed is sure about this and he is noticeably distraught at Ed's clean shaven face.
It comes to a head during their whole conversation over folding socks, when Ed is so uncharacteristically (in Stede's eyes) domestic and gentle, and that results in Stede running away, and then the Kiss and Stede isn't just inexperienced and insecure, but also Plagued By "Fuck, did i ruin him? What have I done?" because Izzy had 'warned' him and these things make Stede believe it:
Stede believes he ruins every semblance of family he has, since he is plagued by guilt over abandoning his wife and kids throughout the season.
Stede got to know (and used to) Ed in his discontent and agitated state, that gradually settled, as Ed fell in love and started to like himself better: only Stede believes the former to be the 'real Blackbeard', as supported by Izzy.
Ed losing his beard, an attribute so heavily exploited in his general image, so mythologised and in turn so revered by Stede in his looking up to Ed, shocks Stede so much because to him it physically manifests his fears - that he ruined Blackbeard.
And then, Chauncey says those exact words to his face. Of course he didn't doubt them. He already believed them before.

what i post: on this blog, just shiny things I like - stuff comes in waves as I get into different things, but Star Trek and Disco Elysium are pretty constant content. Also cats.

other blogs: okay, so: This blog started as a sideblog of All Our Yestertomorrows, which was a comic I was drawing based on the TTRPG we were playing at the time (a mashup of several White Wolf settings). I kind of ran out of steam on that (I should really get back to it, I found the binder with my game notes again), and decided that I'd switch this blog over to be under another account I'd made to use as a portfolio (@effulgentinara), which is only for original work like fanart, jewelry, sketches, etc. Unfortunately, this causes some confusion since I mostly interact with everyone through this side blog.
Please, please @staff - let me either make this its own account or let me swap which is my main and which is my sideblog, or at least let me choose which account replies and asks are marked as being from. It's been eleven years, I think I deserve this.
do i get asks: Not often, but I always enjoy them.
following around: 100. I've determined that's the maximum number of people I can follow without feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with Tumblr, and it's a pleasantly round number.
average hours of sleep:
My personal best/worst is technically only around 50 solid hours awake, but yeah, I'm really bad about just... forgetting? to sleep? But I'm trying to be better about it recently.
instruments: couple of years of piano lessons that I could probably dredge up with a little refresher (don't currently own a piano or working keyboard so I'm out of practice), guitar, ukulele, a little bit of flute, playing around with an electronic drum pad I bought as a treat, every now and then I give that toy accordion a shot again, and recently I've been enjoying the otomatone I got for my birthday
what i’m wearing: t-shirt and shorts (with pockets!)
dream job: children's book illustrator or just creating weird little games (I do some stuff in my spare time, but don't have a lot of chances to work on it)
dream trip: would be nice to go to Japan (particularly the Korakuen Gardens), but if I'm being perfectly honest my main motivation for brushing up on my French is to go visit Parc Astérix someday.
nationality: American/Irish (technically UK as well, but I've never bothered to file the paperwork because I don't really have any plans to live there anytime soon)
