Alright friends, I have seen many wonderful posts about Tinn’s mom, but I can’t sleep so I’m writing one of my own. I have many thoughts and feelings about her because I ADORE her.
There are so many things to talk about regarding her relationship with Tinn and her journey on how to accept and best support him BUT I’m not gonna talk about that. I’m barely going to mention Tinn. I need to talk about this because I haven’t seen it mentioned yet: she is damn good at her job. I love that we had a misdirect at the beginning of the show from Gun’s perspective that she would be an antagonist that’s out to get the music club. Then we shifted to Tinn’s POV and we got to see that she isn’t out to get anyone. She’s a high school principal just trying to make sure her school keeps on running. We don’t know the exact details of what scuffle the music club got into the previous year. But as the principal, it makes sense that she is making tough choices. Clubs that cause problems that result in damages that need to be paid during a time where she has to tighten the budget? It makes sense that she would consider disbanding the music club. Tinn and Gun’s worldview is smaller because they are students at the high school. They can’t see the whole picture that Tinn’s mother sees and has to see in order to keep the school running. Does she make things more difficult for the music club? Absolutely she does, but not because she wants to. It’s literally her job. She needs to make sure the rest of the school can still function.
She also never stops the music club from trying. In fact, I’d say she encourages it, even though they might not realize it. She signs off on letting them compete but only once they’ve improved their grades. It feels unfair and impossible to the band but it is completely reasonable. “Keep up your schoolwork and your academics and you’ll be allowed to participate in this extracurricular activity with the school’s blessing.” That was a rule at my high school. It isn’t her job to just give students what they want willy nilly. It’s her job to make sure the students are set up for success in the future. Once their grades improve, she signs off on it. She might be skeptical and it might not be her thing, but never once does she stop a student from exploring their own interests.
Then we get to the homophobic teacher. She listens to his story while he demands punishment. She asks Tinn if what he said is correct. And she’s asking him because he’s involved, because he’s her son, but also because he’s the school president. Tinn has proven he is responsible and she takes that into consideration. She looks at the situation as a whole. She wants to make sure she hears both sides of the story. So many principals of people in authority will take the teacher’s side and not once ask for the student’s side of the story. But she is fair and she sees her students as people who deserve to be heard. And that entire scene I wasn’t worried about Kajorn’s punishment because I knew she would be fair because she is good at her job. Kajorn needed to be disciplined for using violence, but not for standing up to the homophobic teacher. And she punished accordingly. Then she moved on to tell the teacher what she would do regarding his role in the situation. She was being pressured by the other teacher’s regarding Tinn’s sexuality but she remained professional the entire time and did her job to support her students. And at the prom, standing right next to two of the homophobic teachers, who I’m sure texted her, she loudly told the students to cheer for Tinn and Gun.
She is doing everything in her power to make that school a safe place for students even if that means she has to face backlash. She does that because it’s her job. It’s not her job to judge students. It’s not her job to make life more difficult for students. It is her job to make sure each and every student in that school has the best chance for success when they eventually leave.

Hey, I am writing a research paper on fanfiction for a Sexuality and Social Media class at my university. Can I use some of the things you have said about fanfiction, citing you of course, in this paper? I almost definitely won't get published but I'll get a grade and I like fanfiction and gay people so I get to choose this topic. (I want it to be on the points of contact between fanfiction and the queer community/their relationship.) I can absolutely send it to you when I'm done with it too if you want to see it.
absolutely!!
i’ve done two interviews for college papers this week and it’s honestly one of my FAVORITE things to do! so you’re welcome to use whatever words i’ve said previously. but i also have a lot of thoughts that i haven’t shared by nature of having SO MANY of them if you’d wanna chat one on one via zoom or whatnot!!
and that goes for all of you proving fandom and fanfics validity and importance in an academic setting. :’)

How much do you think the Signal’s debut shook the supervillains, and indeed all criminals, of Gotham? He destroyed their longstanding definition of a Gotham vigilante. All the rules went out the window. From now on, apparently anything goes.
[Early morning in a plain, modest safehouse. Jonathon Crane cracks his eyes open, yawns, slowly gets up and groggily shuffles to the kitchen/dining area, where he takes out a cup and prepares to use the coffee machine. Behind him his scientific equipment and notes are arranged neatly on the counter. A relaxed Duke is taking photos of them.]
Duke: (jovially) Good morning.
Jon: Good morning.
Jon:
Jon: Who the hell are you?!
Duke: I’m the Signal! (pats symbol proudly) The newest hero in town.
Jon: (blinks, still half-asleep) Like… the Bat-Signal?
Duke: Yeah, I’ve got this whole light theme going on.
Jon: But - it - it’s 6:30 AM.
Duke: Yep. Turns out crime doesn’t just vanish when the sun comes up, so I patrol in the daylight hours. The night shift has seven people; the day shift should have at least one, right?
Jon: But you’re a Bat! Bats don’t do that!
Duke: Actually, some species of bat, like fruit bats, are diurnal. I got precedent.
Jon, on the verge of a breakdown: Okay, okay, look. I have lost a great deal of sleep lately evading capture by the frankly ridiculous number of vigilantes active at night. You’re a teenager, a student with a very strenuous job. Surely you understand what sleep deprivation feels like.
Duke: I do.
Jon: Just please, please let me have my coffee.
[A weighted pause. Duke narrows his eyes, then softens.]
Duke: You get one cup.
Jon: Thank you.
[He makes his cup of coffee and lovingly inhales the smell. Just as he’s about to drink it, Duke bats it out of his hand like a cat. It smashes on the floor.]
Jon: YOU -
[Duke quickly cuffs him.]
Duke: Stop! Making! Trauma: The Inhalant! That’s all you have to do, man!
***
[Duke is fighting Poison Ivy in her greenhouse of killer plants.]
Duke, popping out the blades in his escrima sticks: Your vines are no match for my bat-chet blades!
Ivy: Great, another one who puns.
[She sends a new wave of vines, but he gracefully slices and weaves through them. Too gracefully. His reflexes are faster than even Batman’s. Curious as scientists are wont to be, she halts her attack, and then suddenly, silently strikes with a vine straight at the back of his head. He cannot possibly sense it coming. He ducks.]
Ivy: Wait… oh God, you can’t predict movements before they happen with crazy extreme ninja training like Black Bat, can you? I’m not fighting another Bat like that. No way.
Duke: Oh, no, no, no, don’t worry. I’m not nearly as well-trained as Black Bat. I just have superpowers.
Ivy: You what?
Duke: I’m a metahuman. I’ve got superpowers.
Ivy: But you’re a Bat! Bats don’t do that!
Duke: I get that a lot.
Ivy: Well, what superpowers?
Duke: I’m not telling you all about my powers - I’m literally fighting you - but basically I can process light differently. Part of that is seeing where it’s been, the past, and where it will be, the future. I call it ghost vision.
Ivy: How far into the past and future? Hours? Months? Years? Can you see before your birth or after your death? Can you predict other people’s deaths? Watch the rise and fall of civilizations?
Duke, whose ghost vision currently goes under a minute both ways: That’s for me to know and you to… (stares into the middle distance) I believe, never find out.
Ivy: (raises hands) I’ll go to Arkham.
***
[Duke kicks open the door to Edward Nygma's hideout.]
Duke: Give it up, Riddler, I've got a... whoa.
[He trails off as he takes the space in. There are papers - plans, to-do lists, riddles, ciphers, trap and gadget blueprints, maps and more - everywhere, in stacks, folders and scattered loose across every surface. A bin in the corner is overflowing with crumpled pages. Intricate model traps line a shelf, one fallen on the floor. One wall bears a large corkboard with green and purple strings connecting annotated pictures of the Batfamily, including a screenshot of Oracle's digital logo. Edward himself has not reacted whatsoever to Duke's entrance. He's hunched over at his desk, typing away at an expensive computer setup. On one side of him sit many energy drinks, on the other is a massive pile of empty cans. All this detail requires Duke's night vision to see, because the lights are off and the curtains are closed, the only light the computer's cold glow.]
Edward: (only briefly looking up to give him a haughty stare) Yes, yes, the Signal, I've heard. Rest assured, it will be my utmost pleasure to obliterate you in a battle of wits. I just need to finish a couple of things.
Duke: When was the last time you slept?
Edward: (slightly hysterical chuckle) Please. I have transcended my mortal weaknesses thanks to intense focus, indomitable drive and the miracle of stimulants, much as I presume you Bats do. You're in no position to lecture me on getting enough sleep. I mean, you're late, so you're clearly not on top of things.
Duke: What?
Edward: You're meant to be a daytime hero. It's a little late for that, isn't it?
Duke: (concerned) It's 8:00 AM.
[Edward blinks and looks at the clock on his screen. He frowns. He stands up, strides over to the window and opens the curtains, flinching at the bright morning light. Duke notices that he has deep bags under his eyes and looks even more tired than Jon did, but his movements are as energetic as ever. He stretches and winces from back ache.]
Edward: Ah. So it is. ...What day is it?
Duke: (more concerned) Monday?
Edward: Monday?!
Duke: Okay, you've clearly been in the zone for a while. And I know being autistic can make it hard to recognize and interpret your body's messages. When was the last time you ate?
Edward: None of your business. I'm perfect condition.
[He picks up another can. Duke punctures it with a batarang. Edward scoffs and throws it down in indignation.]
Duke: I don't think you should have any more of those. (scans the rooms with X-ray vision) Oh my God, there's no food in here. Did you forget to buy it? Listen, if you come quietly, I'll get you a full breakfast on the way to Arkham.
[Edward is distracted, rummaging through his rooms in search of food.]
Edward: Of course I have food, Duke. It's right... it's somewhere around... (finds the fallen model) oh, I was looking for this!
Duke: No, with my powers I - you know my identity?
Edward: (still distracted, talking increasingly fast) What, like it's hard? I know everyone's except Oracle and the Red Hood. If Jason had survived, he'd be a perfect fit, but he's dead. Now, true, Stephanie is still alive when I distinctly remember visiting her grave, but those are completely different situations. There was a motive to fake her death, to escape the criminal overlords she'd angered with that gang war; I cannot find any such benefit from Jason's faked death and relocation. Stephanie was gone for, like, a year. Jason has yet to return after most of a decade. Even -
Duke: You visited Steph's grave?
Edward: She was a brilliant adversary, I had to pay my respects. Anyway, even if Jason's death was somehow inexplicably faked, he wouldn't have chosen to live only as the Red Hood. Especially who the Red Hood was at first. That would mean sacrificing his close familial relationships and becoming his beloved father and brother's enemy. And why would he ever be a crime lord? It's a radical betrayal of all his values, and based on his backstory, he should resent organized crime. And Batman would never fight his own child. None of it makes any sense! But I can't figure out what else could work. Is he really just a random person the Bats took in in adulthood? So that's been weighing on me. And also -
[He trips over a folder and, weak and lightheaded, crashes to the floor. He's so exhausted that merely lying on a flat surface has him sleeping soundly in an instant, resting his head on a stack of paper. Duke stares at him incredulously.]
Duke: I'm buying you breakfast.

I’ve got some friends and my betrothed doing a little book club. It started with one friend and we’d leave a comment in discord with the percent we were at and then our thought under a spoiler. When we read that far we’d go back to read the spoiler and respond. Then their hubby wanted an excuse to read more, and my betrothed heard about it and wanted in.
At which point I slid forward The Scholomance series, which I’d been pressuring my betrothed into starting and so everyone took it up. It’s been like crack. I have always loved this series and my betrothed was like, “This sounds like a horrifying depressing setting why do you like it?”
But now they’re all voraciously consuming it and I’m living my absolute best life. I try not to comment much as I don’t want to color their perception but these books are so fucking good and now I get to share thoughts with several other people who are having a wonderful time.

I know some of us like to pepper Gaelic endearments into our ghostsoap from time to time and I thought hey! Maybe I should finally share my little headcanon as to how Soap even came about knowing the language in the first place:
I like to think that his granny (who raised him and his siblings) was from the Inner Hebrides and grew up using it. She moved to the lowlands after marrying, became a Gaelic-medium teacher. Thus, Soap attended the school she taught at and had a Gaelic-medium education throughout primary. (Gme students are taught completely in Gaelic from p1-p3 with English being incorporated later.) While not continuing it in secondary, he still had a fluent adult at home keeping the language fresh in his mind. That’s. The bare bones of it anyway.
Anyway I wanted to share this because I’ve seen the occasional person say it’s ridiculous to suddenly see him speaking Gaelic in fics (which is a very fair point of course. few people are immersed in it, it remains a threatened language) but the thought of someone who wanted to include it in their work who then might not because of this is disheartening. Should they do the proper research beforehand, it is plausible when given the right ingredients.
It’s a language that should be celebrated, not discouraged, especially given the history. Having a character know it just really depends on the different factors you throw into their backstory. Even if the author doesn’t explain it, it should then be up to the reader to assume he’s not just pulling the language out of thin air. Idk, if call of duty fanfic of all things can expose people to Gàidhlig and garner interest in some to learn a bit of the language, I just. That is a good thing

What happens when the old abandoned android you found and decided to restore happens to have a mind of their own?
Teach them all they want to learn about being human, obviously. While also giving them some sweet upgrades!
Meda doesn’t know who made Drew, but he DOES know that Drew is incredibly unique. They have little recovered memory of their life before their shutdown, and they aren’t quite sure what their purpose is, but Meda told them that not everything needs a purpose. Some things can just be.

so i’ve been posting a lot lately about paper girls (2022) and it just occurred to me that not everyone actually knows or has watched the show.
SO LET ME AMEND THAT!
Tumblr media
paper girls is a 2022 (unfortunately) limited series on prime video featuring four 12 year-old paper girls from small-town ohio who get caught up in a time-spanning war between two rival factions. during this time-travelling journey, they each encounter versions of their future selves in various ways, learning how their lives have gone as they attempt to reckon with who they currently are, who they’ll grow up to be, and how — maybe — they can change that trajectory.
between moments of intense action and lighthearted comedy, the show really shines with its character moments. this is ultimately a coming of age story about erin tieng, tiffany quilkin, kj brandman, and mackenzie “mac” coyle. these four girls each have their own problems to grapple with, and each of them get some really stellar payoff in the series’ first (and only 😭) season, along with some truly and honestly heartwarming or rib-tickling moments of bonding between the group and various pairings within the group.
think stranger things but with a main cast of girls instead of boys and time travel instead of interdimensional monsters. also better, because the show takes the plights of its young protagonists seriously. the 80’s aren’t glorified, the girls face period-appropriate bigotry (while not in abundance, though, thank god), but their futures aren’t always sunshine and rainbows either. they have troubles and feelings that the narrative focuses on and gives proper space for instead of simply sidelining them for the plot, and there’s about an apparent growth over the season but an experience that makes the girls more nuanced and complex fairly immediately than most kid protagonists. god, i seriously can’t get over how good this show is !!
anyways, everyone needs to watch paper girls. amazon unfortunately didn’t renew it, and while legendary is still shopping it around, there’s unfortunately little hope for a continuation (even if it would really only need one season to wrap the story up, if that’s what it needs). that all said, it’s well well worth the investment and an excellent alternative to some other tired series, especially with the strength of its main cast.
I IMPLORE YALL WATCH PAPER GIRLS 😭😭😭
edit: yes there is a gay character who has one of the best on-screen arcs of coming to terms with her own sexuality and an especially beautiful and touching scene of affirmation from a future person. i won’t spoil who it is or what the scene entails but it’s seriously just. so touching and so affirming and beautiful

Walking In Two Worlds & The Everlasting Road
YA sff set in the near future where an opensource augmented reality is commonly used like social media, and there’s also a completely virtual fantasy game version
follows an Anishinaabe girl who who’s the top player in the VR game, and is constantly fighting to keep her place against the misogynist neo-nazi group in second place
as well as her real life, dealing with being a shy and self-conscious teen growing up on the Rez, and her brother having cancer
and a Uyghur boy who’s moved to her community from China after finding acceptance in an online community (even when he doesn’t agree with their more extreme views) - but when he gets to know Bugz, he has to decide who truly deserves his loyalty
great mix of sff and culture, the future while also very real community traumas of the past (and present)
#walking in two worlds#the everlasting road#wab kinew#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#This has some REALLY interesting and important concepts!#I just think it could have used some more development… Obvs this is YA and I’m an adult I know I’m not quite the audience!#There’s a lot of depth in the setup of the characters but I feel like it skips a lot of the progression#I think there could have been space for more development in a lot of places to make the story feel more dimensional#- but also has so many plot threads that maybe that would have bulked it out too much#It does also jump around quite a bit between the different parts but I think that makes sense with how juggling with irl / online life.#she’s got a lot of internalised fatphobia at the start (and the love interest going “I don’t think you’re fat!!” when people call her fat..#then in book 2 suddenly she’s okay about it - again I wish there was some progression!#her brothers cancer journey is. basically all offscreen lol mostly as set up for plot in book 2. so it doesn't have the emotional impact it#could have..#I liked the way it integrates her culture into the game in a really cool way (though I would have liked more detail there)#also having auto language translators but they regularly don't translate quite right / still run into issues - realistic!#the parallels drawn between his being taken from his family and put in a state education school and Indigenous residential schools#the way that a future world will never be as separate from the past as ur average sff future often portrays#but yeah anyway lots of good ideas execution not so much for me..

with respect to myself, this whole “i need to wait till i’m out of school to date,” “i need to wait till i’m more historically, politically, and culturally educated to date” is all bullshit. it’s the top surgery. that’s the holdup. they chop these tits off and i’m ready to go.
#for the record - i still think that those first two things are the WISEST course of action#but i’m just saying that i don’t think anyone could hold me back if the opportunity arises#because the top surgery thing is my real hangup#because that would be a LOT to go through with someone in a new relationship and i would rather Not#so it’s better to wait#and i have a feeling that MY confidence will increase a ton in the aftermath as well#i’ll FINALLY be able to dress how i want holy SHIT#no more needless layering and strategically shapeless flannels#thank GOD#and in the meantime i’ll just keep trying to learn as much as i can on the way there!#so that i’m as prepared as possible whenever the moment comes along#i’m really working on not being mean to myself about not knowing things#nobody comes into the world with this knowledge#and i was not given the resources growing up that encouraged me to learn these things#just because some people had parents or friends who introduced them to things when they were younger or grew up in cultural centers#doesn’t make them cooler or better than me#i am educating myself now and that is what is important#i enjoy learning and that is what is important#i WILL become my ideal self one day - i am getting better#i am not perfect - i am still fucking up a ton and insecure and stretching myself to the absolute limit#which is why it is probably NOT a good idea to date right now!!!!!!#but who knows… i’ll just go where the road takes me#and see how that works out

Hey, I saw a post about how it should be easy to be nice. But I wanted to let you know, that if you struggle to be nice and you’re trying to anyway. If you have anger issues but you’re trying your best to be nice and you find it hard. If you have narcissistic personality disorder and you’re trying to not fall into your symptoms. Or it’s just hard for you cause it’s hard. You’re doing a great job. Being nice can be hard, and not everyone is nice 100% of the time. You’re allowed to make mistakes and realize that. I’m proud of you. You’re not a bad person.
